Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of parent-childbearing age on child development at 36 months of age is controversial. AIMS We used data from a large cohort study with multiple imputation and mediation analyses of variables. METHODS AND PROCEDURES A total of 72,606 parent-child pairs from the Japan Environment and Children's Study were included in the study. Parents' ages were categorized into five groups. We used five domains of the Japanese translation of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition (J-ASQ-3). Scores below the cutoff value at 36 months were defined as developmental delays in each domain. We used three logistic analysis models. In Model 3, we analyzed maternal and paternal age using other variables and covariates. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS The outcome was a developmental delay in the five domains of J-ASQ-3. In Model 3, ORs for the developmental delay scores regarding parental age were significantly associated with all five domains of J-ASQ-3. The mediation analysis showed a significant mediation interaction effect for mothers but localized for fathers. CONCLUSION Advanced paternal and maternal ages were associated with developmental delay in children. Awareness of the risks of childbearing at an advanced age is crucial. WHAT'S THE PAPER ADDS This manuscript used data from a large cohort study with multiple imputation and mediation analyses. With these analyses, we identified the pure effect of advanced parental age on their children's development at 36 months.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The nature and magnitude of the cognitive and mental health risks among the offspring of young mothers is not fully understood. Our objective is to examine the risk of mental disorders in these offspring. METHODS Five databases (Medline, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and CINAHL) were searched from their inceptions until February 2022. Studies were eligible if they assessed offspring of young mothers (<21 years), contained a control group, and assessed any cognitive and/or mental health outcomes. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to generate standardized mean differences (SMDs) in infants (0-3 years), children (4-9), adolescents (10-19), and adults (20+). Methodological bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS 51 outcomes were meta-analyzed. Levels of cognitive and learning problems were higher among the infants (SMD = 0.30 [95% confidence interval 0.0-0.55]) and adolescents (SMD = 0.43 [0.24 to 0.62]) of young mothers. Adolescents had more symptoms of delinquency (SMD = 0.24 [0.12 to 0.36]). As adults, they are more often convicted of violent crimes (SMD = 0.36 [0.22 to 0.50]). Internalizing symptoms were higher in these offspring in childhood (SMD = 0.29 [0.14 to 0.45]) and adulthood (SMD = 0.35 [0.34 to 0.36]). This review uses unadjusted data and is thus unequipped to infer causality. Studies have high attrition and rely heavily on self-report. CONCLUSIONS Young mothers' offspring have more cognitive, externalizing, and internalizing problems across the lifespan than individuals born to mothers ≥21 years of age. They may benefit from early detection and support.

Abstract
Suicide prevention efforts generally target acute precipitants of suicide, though accumulating evidence suggests that vulnerability to suicide is partly established early in life before acute precipitants can be identified. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize evidence on early life vulnerability to suicide beginning in the prenatal period and extending through age 12. We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycNet, Web of Science, Scopus, Social Services Abstracts, and Sociological Abstracts for prospective studies published through January 2021 that investigated early life risk factors for suicide mortality. The search yielded 13,237 studies; 54 of these studies met our inclusion criteria. Evidence consistently supported the link between sociodemographic (e.g., young maternal age at birth, low parental education, and higher birth order), obstetric (e.g., low birth weight), parental (e.g., exposure to parental death by external causes), and child developmental factors (e.g., exposure to emotional adversity) and higher risk of suicide death. Among studies that also examined suicide attempt, there was a similar profile of risk factors. We discuss a range of potential pathways implicated in these associations and suggest that additional research be conducted to better understand how early life factors could interact with acute precipitants and increase vulnerability to suicide.

Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and is recognized as a serious public health problem. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between family characteristics and the risk of suicide among adolescents in Italy using nationwide official data. We carried out a cohort study based on the record linkage between the 15th Italian Population Census, the Italian Population Register, and the National Register of Causes of Death. Suicides in adolescents aged 10-19 years from 2012 to 2016 were analyzed. Hazard ratios of mortality from suicide were estimated through a multivariable Cox regression model using time-on-study as the time scale. We included 8,284,359 children and adolescents (51% males, 49% females). Over the 5-year follow-up, we registered 330 deaths from suicides (74% males), mostly occurred in the age class 15-19 years (86%). The suicide rate was 1.71 per 100,000 person-years among males and 0.65 among females. We found some familial characteristics associated with a higher risk of dying by suicide, including: living in single-parent or reconstructed families (among boys), a 40-year or more age gap between mother and child (among girls), having highly educated parents, an age difference between parents greater than 5 years. Furthermore, the study showed a lower risk for boys living in urban areas and for both boys and girls living in South Italy. Our results could help in identifying adolescents at high risk of suicide who could benefit from the planning of targeted intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a global tendency for parents to conceive children later in life. The maternal dimension of the postponement transition has been thoroughly studied, but interest in the paternal side is more recent. For the moment, most literature reviews on the topic have focused on the consequences of advanced paternal age (APA) on fertility, pregnancy and the health of the child. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE The present review seeks to move the focus away from the biological and medical dimensions of APA and synthesise the knowledge of the other face of APA. SEARCH METHODS We used the scoping review methodology. Searches of interdisciplinary articles databases were performed with keywords pertaining to APA and its dimensions outside of biology and medicine. We included scientific articles, original research, essays, commentaries and editorials in the sample. The final sample of 177 documents was analysed with qualitative thematic analysis. OUTCOMES We identified six themes highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of APA research. The 'terminological aspects' highlight the lack of consensus on the definition of APA and the strategies developed to offer alternatives. The 'social aspects' focus on the postponement transition towards reproducing later in life and its cultural dimensions. The 'public health aspects' refer to attempts to analyse APA as a problem with wider health and economic implications. The 'psychological aspects' focus on the consequences of APA and older fatherhood on psychological characteristics of the child. The 'ethical aspects' reflect on issues of APA emerging at the intersection of parental autonomy, children's welfare and social responsibility. The 'regulatory aspects' group different suggestions to collectively approach the implications of APA. Our results show that the field of APA is still in the making and that evidence is lacking to fully address the issues of APA. The review suggests promising avenues of research such as introducing the voice of fathers of advanced age into the research agenda. WIDER IMPLICATIONS The results of this review will be useful for developing policies and preconception health interventions that consider and include prospective fathers of advanced age.

Abstract
Teenage childbearing (age 15-19 years) represents a significant public health issue that can generate considerable deleterious, multigenerational consequences for teen-childbearing mothers and their offspring. However, few studies have examined the potential mediating mechanisms that may explain if and how teen childbearing is associated with the development of offspring psychopathology. The current study used a developmental model to test the mediating role of chronic child maltreatment in the relationship between teen childbearing and offspring internalizing symptoms in childhood and emerging adulthood. The study participants were 384 individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse backgrounds, assessed across two longitudinal waves of data (i.e., ages 10-12 and 18-20). The sample included maltreated and nonmaltreated children, all of whom were comparable in terms of family income. Structural equation modeling was conducted to test direct and indirect pathways from teen childbearing to offspring psychopathology. A multigenerational developmental cascade was found such that individuals born to mothers who began their childbearing in adolescence were more likely to experience chronic maltreatment during childhood, which in turn predicted greater internalizing symptoms throughout childhood and emerging adulthood. Using a developmental psychopathology framework, the results are discussed with regard to implications for prevention and early intervention.

Abstract
People are having children later in life. The consequences for offspring adult survival have been little studied due to the need for long follow-up linked to parental data and most research has considered offspring survival only in early life. We used Swedish registry data to examine all-cause and cause-specific adult mortality (293,470 deaths among 5,204,433 people, followed up to a maximum of 80 years old) in relation to parental age. For most common causes of death adult survival was improved in the offspring of older parents (HR for all-cause survival was 0.96 (95% CI: 0.96, 0.97) and 0.98 (0.97, 0.98) per five years of maternal and paternal age, respectively). The childhood environment provided by older parents may more than compensate for any physiological disadvantages. Within-family analyses suggested stronger benefits of advanced parental age. This emphasises the importance of secular trends; a parent's later children were born into a wealthier, healthier world. Sibling-comparison analyses can best assess individual family planning choices, but our results suggested a vulnerability to selection bias when there is extensive censoring. We consider the numerous causal and non-causal mechanisms which can link parental age and offspring survival, and the difficulty of separating them with currently available data.

Abstract
Early motherhood may develop various stresses for the teen mothers and have adverse consequences. Current research aims at exploring experiences of teen mothers with stress and stressors of early motherhood. This qualitative study was conducted using conventional content analysis through in-depth semistructured interview. Eighteen Iranian teen mothers, who experienced parenting stress, with maximum variation in the age of first pregnancy, child's age, place of residence, and financial condition took part in this research. Data collection continued until saturation and were analyzed using MAXQDA10 software. Data analysis led to extraction of five categories including "storm of anxiety," "wander identity," "an unaccompanied way," "unarmed combat," and "a tired body." Teen mothers experienced tensions such as fear and worry, isolation and loneliness, regret, shame, depression, and doubt. These tensions originated from identity conflicts, inadequate social support, role inefficiencies, physical problems, and responsibilities. Teen mothers are influenced by various physical, psychological, social, and economic stressors which are in relation with the teenage, motherhood role, and the environment. Nurses are the major source of support for the teen mothers. Nurses should identify stress and stressors in teen mothers and strengthen well-being feeling in the teen mothers and their children through care, educational, consultative, and coordination interventions.

Abstract
The competition for nutrients that arises when pregnancy coincides with continuing or incomplete growth in young adolescent girls increases the risk of preterm delivery and low birthweight with negative after-effects for mother and child extending beyond the perinatal period. Sheep paradigms involving nutritional management of weight and adiposity in young, biologically immature adolescents have allowed the consequences of differential maternal growth status to be explored. Although nutrient reserves at conception play a modest role, it is the dietary manipulation of the maternal growth trajectory thereafter which has the most negative impact on pregnancy outcome. Overnourishing adolescents to promote rapid maternal growth is particularly detrimental as placental growth, uteroplacental blood flows and fetal nutrient delivery are perturbed leading to a high incidence of fetal growth restriction and premature delivery of low birthweight lambs, whereas in undernourished adolescents further maternal growth is prevented, and depletion of the maternal body results in a small reduction in birthweight independent of placental size. Maternal and placental endocrine systems are differentially altered in both paradigms with downstream effects on fetal endocrine systems, organ development and body composition. Approaches to reverse these effects have been explored, predominantly targeting placental growth or function. After birth, growth-restricted offspring born to overnourished adolescents and fed to appetite have an altered metabolic phenotype which persists into adulthood, whereas offspring of undernourished adolescents are largely unaffected. This body of work using ovine paradigms has public health implications for nutritional advice offered to young adolescents before and during pregnancy, and their offspring thereafter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse in-utero and perinatal conditions might contribute to an increased suicide risk throughout the lifespan; however, existing evidence is sparse and contradictory. We aimed to investigate in-utero and perinatal exposures associated with suicide, suicide attempt, and suicidal ideation. METHODS We did a systematic review and meta-analysis and searched MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO from inception to Jan 24, 2019, for population-based prospective studies that investigated the association between in-utero and perinatal factors and suicide, suicide attempt, and suicidal ideation. Only papers published in English in peer-reviewed journals were considered. Two researchers independently extracted formal information (eg, country, year, duration of follow-up) and number of cases and non-cases exposed and non-exposed to each risk factor. We calculated pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs using random-effects models and used meta-regression to investigate heterogeneity. This study was registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42018091205. FINDINGS We identified 42 eligible studies; they had a low risk of bias (median quality score 9/9 [IQR 8-9]). Family or parental characteristics, such as high birth order (eg, for fourth-born or later-born vs first-born, pooled OR 1·51 [95% CIs 1·21-1·88]), teenage mothers (1·80 [1·52-2·14]), single mothers (1·57 [1·31-1·89]); indices of socioeconomic position, such as low maternal (1·36 [1·28-1·46]) and paternal (1·38 [1·27-1·51]) education; and fetal growth (eg, low birthweight 1·30 [1·09-1·55] and small for gestational age 1·18 [1·00-1·40]) were associated with higher suicide risk. Father's age, low gestational age, obstetric characteristics (eg, caesarean section), and condition or exposure during pregnancy (eg, maternal smoking or hypertensive disease) were not associated with higher suicide risk. Similar patterns of associations were observed for suicide attempt and suicidal ideation; however, these results were based on a lower number of studies. In meta-regression, differences in length of follow-up explained most between-study heterogeneity (inital I2 ranged from 0 to 79·5). INTERPRETATION These findings suggest that prenatal and perinatal characteristics are associated with increased suicide risk during the life course, supporting the developmental origin of health and diseases hypothesis for suicide. The low number of studies for some risk factors, especially for suicide attempt and ideation, leaves gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed. The mechanisms underlying the reported associations and their causal nature still remain unclear. FUNDING Horizon 2020 (EU).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Motherhood in adolescence is associated with risks for both the young mother and the children. OBJECTIVE Presentation of the current state of research on the mental health of adolescent mothers and its effects on the development of their children. MATERIAL AND METHODS Electronic database search in PubMed using various combined key terms such as "teenage pregnancy", "adolescent pregnancy", "teenage mother", "child development", "mother-child interaction". Review of the literature of the sources found and discussion of current publications and databases of public institutions. RESULTS In addition to psychosocial risks such as fewer education years due to family formation and lower incomes, young mothers also suffer more frequently from mental disorders, both before pregnancy and due to the additional burden of motherhood in their own developmental phase of youth. These can have unfavorable effects on the mother-child interaction and on the psychosocial and cognitive development of the children, thereby leading to the transgenerational transmission of risk factors. CONCLUSION In addition to primary prevention by avoiding teenage pregnancies, early identification of adolescent mothers and children at risk for early treatment and intervention is necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal factors, including increasing childbearing age and various life-style factors, are associated with poorer short- and long-term outcomes for children, whereas knowledge of paternal parameters is limited. Recently, increasing paternal age has been associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, birth defects, autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia in children. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE The aim of this systematic review is to describe the influence of paternal factors on adverse short- and long-term child outcomes. SEARCH METHODS PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases up to January 2017 were searched. Paternal factors examined included paternal age and life-style factors such as body mass index (BMI), adiposity and cigarette smoking. The outcome variables assessed were short-term outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight, small for gestational age (SGA), stillbirth, birth defects and chromosomal anomalies. Long-term outcome variables included mortality, cancers, psychiatric diseases/disorders and metabolic diseases. The systematic review follows PRISMA guidelines. Relevant meta-analyses were performed. OUTCOMES The search included 14 371 articles out of which 238 met the inclusion criteria, and 81 were included in quantitative synthesis (meta-analyses). Paternal age and paternal life-style factors have an association with adverse outcome in offspring. This is particularly evident for psychiatric disorders such as autism, autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia, but an association is also found with stillbirth, any birth defects, orofacial clefts and trisomy 21. Paternal height, but not BMI, is associated with birth weight in offspring while paternal BMI is associated with BMI, weight and/or body fat in childhood. Paternal smoking is found to be associated with an increase in SGA, birth defects such as congenital heart defects, and orofacial clefts, cancers, brain tumours and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. These associations are significant although moderate in size, with most pooled estimates between 1.05 and 1.5, and none exceeding 2.0. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Although the increased risks of adverse outcome in offspring associated with paternal factors and identified in this report represent serious health effects, the magnitude of these effects seems modest.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.
