Abstract
BACKGROUND Relative fat mass (RFM) is a novel indicator for measuring body fat. The relationship between RFM and depression was explored using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005 to 2018. METHODS A general statistical description of the population included in the study was performed, and logistic analyses were used to explore the association between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), RFM and depression. Sensitivity analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were also conducted to investigate the association between RFM and depression. RESULTS A total of 28,836 participants were included in the study. In multivariate models, all obesity indices were associated with depression (P < 0.001). An increase of 1 SD in BMI, WC, and RFM was associated with a respective increased risk of depression of 2.3 %, 1.0 %, and 3.3 %. Excluding those taking antidepressants, the risk of depression was OR 1.88 (95 % CI: 1.26-2.79) for those with RFM in the highest quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile. After Inverse probability of weighting (IPW), the risk of depression in individuals with RFM in the highest quartile compared with individuals in the lowest quartile was 2.62 (95 % CI: 2.21-3.09). The RCS showed a possible nonlinear relationship between RFM and depression. CONCLUSIONS RFM is associated with depression, suggesting that attention to RFM may be helpful for depression research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Eating disorders among children and adolescents have increased in prevalence, and mortality rates for anorexia nervosa are among the highest for any psychiatric disorder. Our current study aimed to (a) examine the cross-sectional relationship between body composition and anxiety/depressive symptoms among 97 adolescents and young adults who have been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, (b) examine the longitudinal changes in body composition and anxiety/depressive symptoms over three months (from baseline to follow-up visit), and (c) examine the longitudinal relationship between change in body composition and change in anxiety/depression over three months. METHOD A retrospective chart review was conducted within an interdisciplinary eating disorder clinic between August 2019 and December 2021. In total, 97 adolescents aged 11-20 years old with diagnoses of anorexia nervosa were included in the analyses. Body composition data were collected at each visit along with parent- and youth-report measures of symptoms of anxiety/depression symptoms. RESULTS Findings indicated adolescents demonstrated some improvement in body composition, as well as parent-reported reductions in anxiety/depression symptoms. Based on parent reports, increased BMI percentile was associated with improvements in anxiety/depression symptoms. On the other hand, youth did not report significant changes in anxiety/depressive symptoms. Additionally, there were no associated improvements with body composition measures, which may be associated with continued body dissatisfaction or symptoms of anxiety and depression predating the eating disorder. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest the importance of including interventions addressing depression, anxiety, and body image as part of treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms are strongly associated with the development of various diseases and are one of the leading causes of disability in the world. However, the relationship between weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) and depressive symptoms has not been studied. This study aimed to assess the relationship between depressive symptoms and WWI. METHODS This study took NHANES data from 2005 to 2018 with 32,374 participants. Depressive symptoms were measured by a questionnaire (PHQ-9).WWI was determined by dividing the square root of waist circumference (cm) by weight (kg). Multivariate logistic regression models, smoothed curve fitting, and weighted generalized additive model (GAM) regression were used to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and WWI, BMI, and waist circumference. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were also performed. RESULTS In fully adjusted models, the OR (95 % CI) for WWI and depressive symptoms with WWI, BMI, and waist circumference were 1.18 (1.05, 1.34), BMI 1.01 (1.00, 1.02, 1.01 (1.00, 1.01), respectively. Participants in the highest quartile (Q4) had a 49 % higher depressive symptoms compared to those in the lowest quartile (Q1) (OR = 1.49, 95 % CI:1.14-1.96). Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed a stable relationship between depressive symptoms and WWI. LIMITATIONS It is difficult to determine a causal relationship between the two; questionnaire collection may be somewhat biased; CONCLUSIONS: WWI was positively associated with depressive symptoms. This association was stronger than BMI and waist circumference. However, this relationship was stable. This study emphasizes the potential utility of WWI in preventing depressive symptoms and improving prognosis in the population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the combined effect of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms on the risk to type 2 diabetes, while also assessing the potential influence of various glycemic states and gender on this combined relationship. METHODS Data is acquired from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, and 5949 participants were included for analysis. Participants were divided into four groups: neither have abdominal obesity nor depressive symptoms (AO-/DS-), only have depressive symptoms (AO-/DS+), only have abdominal obesity (AO+/DS-), and have both abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms (AO+/DS+). Stratified analyses differentiating the glycemic statuses and sex of the participants were also carried out. RESULTS After adjusting for the confounders, the AO-/DS+, AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes were all discovered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.06-1.79; OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.63-2.63; OR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.83-3.11, respectively) compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype in the overall population. In further stratified analyses, we arrived at the same conclusion for normoglycemic individuals, especially in females. For prediabetes and males, the AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes are risk factors for type 2 diabetes compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype, but not with AO-/DS+. CONCLUSION Regardless of glycemic status and sex, the coexistence of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for type 2 diabetes only in normoglycemic individuals and females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hyperuricemia has become a vital public health problem affecting the health of residents. The visceral fat area (VFA) is closely related to many chronic diseases. However, the association between VFA and hyperuricemia within the Chinese adult population remains nebulous. The aim of the research is to assess the relationship between VFA and serum uric acid levels. METHODS AND RESULTS From June 2020 to June 2021, a total of 340 Chinese adults (240 in the control group and 100 in the hyperuricemia group) were recruited from the physical examination center of Hongqi Hospital Affiliated to Mudanjiang Medical University. General demographic characteristics were collected by questionnaire. VFA was measured by a body composition analyzer, and serum biochemical indices were detected by clinical laboratory. VFA in the hyperuricemia group was higher than in the control group (P<0.05). Further, VFA demonstrated a positive correlation with serum uric acid level (rs = 0.370, P<0.001). To further explore this relationship, we divided the VFA into quartiles (<P25, P25-P50, P50-P75, ≥P75). Upon comparison with the <P25 group, we found the VFA in the P25-P50, P50-P75, and ≥P75 groups to be associated with a substantially escalated risk of hyperuricemia, even after adjusting for age, gender, body weight, fasting plasma glucose, calcium, alanine transaminase, urea, alkaline phosphatase, and γ-glutamyltransferase. The OR and 95% CI were 2.547 (1.023, 6.341), 3.788 (1.409, 10.187) and 3.723 (1.308, 10.595), respectively (P<0.05). CONCLUSION VFA has a positive correlation with serum uric acid levels and may serve as a crucial predictive marker for hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Obesity and psychiatric disorders have high prevalence and are both considered major health problems. Within the last decades, the rates of obesity have risen over 6%, while the prevalence of psychiatric disorders is over 12% for children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to systematically review the evidence regarding the relation of obesity and psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence. This review, based on the PRISMA guidelines, included cross-sectional studies published within the last decade, pertaining to the relation between psychiatric disorders and obesity in children and adolescents up to the age of 19 years. Studies on eating disorders were excluded. A total of 14 studies of 23,442 children and adolescents that investigated the relation of obesity with anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis were included in this systematic review. Nine of the included studies reported a significant relationship between the psychiatric disorder under investigation and obesity. Understanding the nexus between obesity and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is of great importance, given the alarming increase in both conditions in youth. Such findings could facilitate the development and implementation of targeted interventions.

Abstract
Background The amount of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) tends to increase with age and is associated with several health problems, such as cardiometabolic diseases, increased infections, and overall mortality. Objectives This review provides a general assessment of how visceral adiposity correlates with the development of health problems and changes in serum biochemical parameters in middle-aged and older adults. Methods We searched specific terms in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases for VAT articles published in the English language between 2009 and 2019 related to older adults. Results The search found twenty-three publications in this period, of which nine were excluded. The publications had a population aged between 42 and 83 years and correlated the VAT area ratio with several comorbidities (such as pancreatitis, depression, cancer, and coronary heart disease) and serum biochemical parameters. Conclusion Further research on the association between visceral obesity and the emergence of health problems and the relationship between VAT and changes in serum biochemical parameters in older individuals should deepen the understanding of this connection and develop preventive actions.

Abstract
The neurobiological and behavioral underpinnings linking mental disorders, in particular, major depressive disorder (MDD), with cardiovascular disorders are a matter of debate. Recent research focuses on visceral (intra-abdominal and epicardial) adipose tissue and inflammation and their impact on the development of cardiometabolic disorders. Intra-abdominal adipose tissue is defined as an endocrine active fat compartment surrounding inner organs and is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, a risk factor for the later development of cardiovascular disorders. Epicardial (pericardial) adipose tissue is a fat compartment surrounding the heart with close proximity to the arteries supporting the heart. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is an important source of inflammatory mediators that, in concert with other risk factors, plays a leading role in cardiovascular diseases. In conjunction with the behavioral (physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle), psychological (adherence problems), and hormonal (dysfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis with subsequent hypercortisolism) alterations frequently accompanying MDD, an enhanced risk for cardiovascular disorders results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the predictive value of intrinsic capacity on one-year incident adverse outcomes among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS A total of 756 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 60 years were followed up after 1 year. Intrinsic capacity was assessed using the revised integrated care for older people screening tool. Adverse outcomes included incident disability, recurrent falls, hospitalization, emergency department visits, and poor quality of life. Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the predictive value of intrinsic capacity domains on adverse outcomes. RESULTS Cognitive decline, limited mobility, visual impairment and depressive symptoms predicted incident disability. Visual impairment predicted recurrent falls. Cognitive decline and limited mobility predicted emergency department visits. Limited mobility predicted poor quality of life. DISCUSSION Intrinsic capacity could predict incident adverse outcomes among community-dwelling older adults. Assessing intrinsic capacity would facilitate early identification of older adults at high risk of adverse outcomes and prompt targeted interventions.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Depression is most important psychological problem that is much prevalent in women than men. Obesity and depression are the leading causes of both physical and mental disability and the link between these disorders had not explored well. The present study evaluated the link between the depression, Body mass index (BMI) and the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in subjects with, without insulin resistance. METHODS A total of 150 subjects, vital and biochemical parameters were measured for eligible screened subjects in the trial of weight loss intervention at first visit. A self-reported Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale was used to assess the depression among the participants. The association of BMI and MetS components with risk of depression was analysed using multiple logistic regression analysis in subjects with and without insulin resistance. RESULTS Obesity was associated with highly significant increase in risk of depression (OR = 13.01, 95% CI 4.40-38.49) as compared to overweight subjects. Female subjects with obesity had a greater risk for depression (β: 3.725, OR: 42.62, 95% CI: 5.74-316.3 and p < 0.0001) than male subjects (β: 1.922, OR: 6.83, 95% CI: 1.8-26 and p = 0.005), and it was statistically significant. There was no association between other models (IR and MetS) and depression in both genders (p < 0.05). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION The odds of depression was 42.62 times more in obese women and 6.83 time more in obese men compared to overweight subjects. Subjects those who are having ≥3 metabolic syndrome (MetS) components, increased the risk of depression by 0.75 times in women and 1.50 times in men. In view of these results of our study, we conclude that the body mass index is an individual strong predictor of depression whereas metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance had no significant association with depression.

Abstract
Objective Metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) is conflicting. The impact of sex, including menopause, has not been described. We estimated the prevalence and factors associated with MetS in men and women with ERA. Methods A cross‐sectional study of the Canadian Early Arthritis Cohort (CATCH) was performed. Participants with baseline data to estimate key MetS components were included. Sex‐stratified logistic regression identified baseline variables associated with MetS. Results The sample included 1543 participants; 71% were female and the mean age was 54 (SD 15) years. MetS prevalence was higher in men 188 (42%) than women 288 (26%, P < 0.0001) and increased with age. Frequent MetS components in men were hypertension (62%), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, 40%), obesity (36%), and low high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (36%). Postmenopausal women had greater frequency of hypertension (65%), IGT (32%), and high triglycerides (21%) compared with premenopausal women (P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, MetS was negatively associated with seropositivity and pulmonary disease in men. Increasing age was associated with MetS in women. In postmenopausal women, corticosteroid use was associated with MetS. Psychiatric comorbidity was associated with MetS in premenopausal women. MetS status was not explained by disease activity or core RA measures. Conclusion The characteristics and associations of MetS differed in men and women with ERA. Sex differences, including postmenopausal status, should be considered in comorbidity screening. With this knowledge, the interplay of MetS, sex, and RA therapeutic response on cardiovascular outcomes should be investigated.
