Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between obesity and depressive symptoms remains controversial. The Weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) shows advantages in assessing central obesity. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms. METHOD This prospective cohort study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) spanning 2011-2020. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depressive Symptoms Scale (CESD-10) scores. Linear mixed models were used to examine longitudinal associations. RESULTS A total of 6835 participants over the age of 45 were included. WWI was positively associated with CESD-10 scores (β per 1 SD increase = 0.052SD; 95%CI: 0.021 to 0.083SD) and was linked to a faster increase in CESD-10 scores over time (β = 0.095SD/year; 95%CI: 0.090 to 0.100 SD/year). Conversely, BMI was negatively associated with CESD-10 scores (β per 1 SD increase = -0.067SD; 95%CI: -0.097 to -0.038SD). However, the negative association between BMI and CESD-10 scores weakened over time (β per 1 SD increase = 0.008SD/y; 95%CI: 0.003 to 0.013 SD/y). Nonlinear associations were detected between both WWI and BMI with CESD-10 scores. LIMITATIONS Self-reported depressive symptoms assessments may have introduced information bias. The observational design limits ruling out unobserved confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the association between WWI and the long-term progression of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults. WWI may enhance our understanding of the link between obesity and depressive symptoms and could be superior to BMI in predicting depressive symptom progression.

Abstract
The authors highlight well-known and hypothesized pathophysiologic mechanistic links underlying obesity and the various pediatric disorders across multiple organ systems with which it is associated. Obesity is attributed to an imbalance in energy intake versus expenditure; there is growing knowledge regarding its multifactorial origins, dysfunctional physiologic processes, and adverse health consequences. Individuals with obesity exhibit variations in metabolic rate, genetic predisposition, and hormonal regulation, influencing diverse responses in regulating energy balance. Understanding the complex mechanistic relationships surrounding the pathophysiology of obesity assists in its consideration as a disease process, allowing pediatric health practitioners to manage its sequelae more effectively.

Regular follow-up visits with repeated review of systems, physical examination, and laboratory testing can facilitate early detection and management of comorbidities of this chronic disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between adherence to sleep, dietary, screen time, and physical activity (PA) (8-5-2-1-0) guidelines and risk of high body mass index (BMI ≥ 85 percentile) among U.S. adolescents and to assess for racial inequities and age-varying effects in these associations. METHODS Data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System survey were used to conduct multivariable logistic regression models and moderation analysis by race/ethnicity and age using time-varying varying effect models (TVEM) and estimate associations of interest. RESULTS Of the 13,518 adolescents aged ≥ 14 years, only 0.5% met all guidelines. Adolescents adhering to sleep guidelines had a 21% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.67-0.93). Those adhering to PA guidelines had a 34% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.56-0.79), and those adhering to screen time guidelines had a 17% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72-0.95). TVEM showed associations between adherence to sleep and screen time guidelines with high BMI fluctuate and are at specific ages. TVEM revealed substantial racial/ethnic differences in the age-varying association between adherence to 8-5-2-1-0 guidelines and high BMI throughout adolescence. CONCLUSIONS Associations between adherence to sleep and screen time guidelines and high BMI fluctuate with age, highlighting the need for nuanced interventions targeting 24-h movement guidelines (sleep, PA, and screen time) across adolescence, particularly given racial/ethnic disparities.

Abstract
Overweight/obesity among adolescents in Shandong Province, China, has been rising, posing significant public health challenge. Comprehensive investigation is needed to develop effective interventions. Following the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, a stratified random cluster sampling approach was used from September to October 2023 across 17 cities in Shandong Province. The study included 165 middle schools, surveying 99,638 students aged 12 ∼ 15. After applying exclusion criteria, 97,356 students (97.71% effective rate) completed anthropometric measurements and questionnaires. Overweight/obesity were assessed based on national and international standards. Univariable chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze factors influencing overweight/obesity. In 2023, the overweight/obesity rate among 12 ∼ 15-year-olds in Shandong was 19.75%. Significant factors included sex, age, residence, family income, parental weight status and activity, mother's gestational diabetes history, birth weight, physical activity, sleep, screen time, homework, and diet. Girls, older adolescents, and those with physically active parents or who themselves engaged in over 1.5 h of daily physical activity had lower odds of being overweight/obese. Adequate sleep and frequent consumption of vegetable and fruit were also protective. Higher odds were associated with urban residence, high family income, overweight/obese parents, maternal gestational diabetes, high birth weight, excessive screen time, extensive homework, and frequent fast food consumption. Overweight/obesity in Shandong adolescents is influenced by multiple determinants. Holistic interventions addressing genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors are essential for promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing the prevalence in this demographic.

Abstract
Objective This cross-sectional study examined the influence of sedentary behavior (SB) time substitution with physical activity (PA) on depressive symptoms among adults with overweight/obesity. SB time was replaced with equal amount of walking/bicycling or leisure-time moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Methods Data of the 18344 adults, who were overweight and obesity was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2006-2018. PA of participants was measured by the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Depressive symptoms, including overall, somatic, and cognitive depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Isotemporal substitution model based on weighted multiple linear regression was used to assess the association of SB time substitution with PA on depressive symptoms. Results Independent model analysis showed that 30 min/day SB time was significantly associated with higher PHQ-9 depressive symptoms, while engage in walking/bicycling or leisure-time MVPA for 30 min/day was associated with lower depressive symptoms. Isotemporal substitution analyses revealed that replacing 30 min/day SB time with equal amount of walking/bicycling or leisure-time MVPA was associated with significant lower PHQ-9 total scores (walking/bicycling: β = -0.088, 95%CI = -0.129, -0.047, P < 0.01; MVPA: β = -0.160, 95%CI = -0.185, -0.134, P < 0.01). Moreover, cognitive depressive symptoms (walking/bicycling: β = -0.035, 95%CI = -0.058, -0.013, P < 0.01; MVPA: β = -0.074, 95%CI = -0.088, -0.060, P < 0.01), and somatic depressive symptoms (walking/bicycling: β = -0.053, 95%CI = -0.075, -0.030, P < 0.01; MVPA: β = -0.085, 95%CI = -0.100, -0.071, P < 0.01) were also significantly lower after replacing SB time with either walking/bicycling or MVPA. However, replacing 30 min/day PA with SB time represented with higher depressive symptoms. Conclusions Replacing SB time with walking/bicycling or MVPA is beneficial in lowering the depressive symptoms among overweight/obese adults. Owing to the benefits of PA on depression, strategies promoting PA participation, are necessary for better social/mental well-being and healthy society.

Abstract
Several studies have reported side effects of finasteride (FIN), such as anxiety/depression in young men. Obesity is also positively associated with anxiety/depression symptoms; however, the impacts of long-term FIN treatment and FIN withdrawal in young obese individuals are still elusive. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of long-term treatment and its withdrawal on anxiety/depression and brain pathologies in lean and obese adult male rats. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were equally divided into two groups and fed either a normal or high-fat diet. At age 13 weeks, rats in each dietary group were divided into three subgroups: 1) the control group receiving drinking water, 2) the long-term treatment group receiving FIN orally at 5 mg/kg/day for 6 weeks, and 3) the withdrawal group receiving FIN orally at 5 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks followed by a 4-week withdrawal period. Anxiety/depression-like behaviors, biochemical analysis, brain inflammation, oxidative stress, neuroactive steroids, brain metabolites, and microglial complexity were tested. The result showed that lean rats treated with long-term FIN and its withdrawal exhibited metabolic disturbances, depressive-like behavior, and both groups showed increased neurotoxic metabolites and reduced microglial complexity. Obesity itself led to metabolic disturbances and brain pathologies, including increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and quinolinic acid, as well as reduced microglial complexity, resulting in increased anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. Interestingly, the long-term FIN treatment group in obese rats showed attenuation of depressive-like behaviors, brain inflammation, and oxidative stress, along with increased brain antioxidants, suggesting the possible benefits of FIN in obese conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth obesity and depression are public health concerns. Although meta-analyses suggest a positive association between those conditions in adults and adolescents, evidence remains unclear in prepubertal children. We examined the bidirectional associations between levels of depressive symptoms and weight status in 8-10-year-old children with a parental history of obesity, over two years, and whether they differ by sex. METHODS Data were drawn from the QUebec Adipose and Lifestyle InvesTigation in Youth Cohort Study's baseline and first follow-up evaluations (n = 558). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 12-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale and weight status using body mass index z-scores based on World Health Organization standards. Linear and logistic regression models were used to test the directionality and magnitude of the associations, adjusting for age, sex, physical activity, screen time, parental education, alcohol and cigarette use, and baseline outcome measure. RESULTS Children with higher levels of depressive symptoms at baseline were not more likely to have overweight/obesity at follow-up (odds ratio [95 % Coefficient Interval] = 0.95[0.88;1.02]). Baseline overweight/obesity was not associated with subsequent higher levels of depressive symptoms (beta coefficient [95 % Coefficient Interval] = 0.20 [-0.47;0.87]). No sex differences emerged. LIMITATIONS Selection bias may have occurred due to loss at follow-up (10 % attrition) and exclusion of 6 participants taking mood disorder medication. CONCLUSIONS Unlike in adults and adolescents, no association between weight status and depressive symptoms was observed in childhood over two years. Underlying mechanisms linking both conditions later in life may not apply as early as prepubertal childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight/obesity combined with depression among children and adolescents (ODCA) is a global concern. The bidirectional relationship between depression and overweight/obesity often leads to their comorbidity. Childhood and adolescence represent critical periods for physical and psychological development, during which the comorbidity of overweight/obesity and depression may increase the risk of adverse health outcomes. AIM To evaluate the relationship between ODCA, we conduct a bibliometric analysis to aid in formulating prevention and treatment strategies. METHODS From 2004 to 2023, articles related to ODCA were selected using the Science Citation Index Expanded from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis of relevant publications, including countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords, was conducted using the online bibliometric analysis platforms, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and bibliometrix. RESULTS Between 2004 and 2023, a total of 1573 articles were published on ODCA. The United States has made leading contributions in this field, with Harvard University emerging as the leading contributor in terms of research output, and Tanofsky being the most prolific author. The J Adolescent Health has shown significant activity in this domain. Based on the results of the keyword and reference analyses, inequality, adverse childhood experiences, and comorbidities have become hot topics in ODCA. Moreover, the impact of balanced-related behavior and exploration of the biological mechanisms, including the potential role of key adipocytokines and lipokines, as well as inflammation in ODCA, have emerged as frontier topics. CONCLUSION The trend of a significant increase in ODCA publications is expected to continue. The research findings will contribute to elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms of ODCA and its prevention and treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's mental health, including their well-being, is a major public health concern, as the burden of related disorders may last throughout one's life. Although epidemiological mental health surveillance systems for children and adolescents have been implemented in several countries, they are sorely lacking in France. OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe the first step of the implementation of a novel surveillance system in France called Enabee (Etude nationale sur le bien-être des enfants), which focuses on the issue of mental health in children. The system aims to (1) describe the temporal trends in the population-based prevalence of the main mental health disorders and well-being in children aged 3 to 11 years, (2) explore their major determinants, and (3) assess mental health care use by this population. To do this, Enabee will rely on results from a recurrent national cross-sectional homonymous study. This paper presents the protocol for the first edition of this study (called Enabee 2022), as well as initial results regarding participation. METHODS Enabee 2022 is a national cross-sectional study that was implemented in French schools in 2022. It used a probabilistic, multistage, stratified, and balanced sampling plan as follows: first, schools were randomly drawn and stratified according to the type of school. Up to 4 classes per school were then randomly drawn, and finally, all the pupils within each class were selected. The study covered children from preschool and kindergarten (aged 3 to 6 years, US grading system) to fifth grade (aged 6 to 11 years). Children from first to fifth grades provided a self-assessment of their mental health using 2 validated self-administered questionnaires: the Dominic Interactive (DI) and the KINDL. Parents and teachers completed a web-based questionnaire, including the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Parents also answered additional questions about their parenting attitudes; their own mental health; known social, economic, and environmental determinants of mental health in children; and their child's life habits. Health, education, and family stakeholders were involved in designing and implementing the study as part of a large consultation group. RESULTS Data were collected from May 2, 2022, to July 31, 2022, in 399 schools across metropolitan France. Teachers completed questionnaires for 5721 pupils in preschool and kindergarten and for 15,263 pupils from first to fifth grades. Parents completed questionnaires for 3785 children in preschool and kindergarten and for 9227 children from first to fifth grades. Finally, 15,206 children from first to fifth grades completed the self-administered questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS Enabee 2022 constitutes the first milestone in the development of a novel national epidemiological surveillance system, paving the way for improved children's mental health policies in France.

Abstract
Background Osteoporosis (OP), affecting millions around the globe, is a prevalent degenerative condition of the bones characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) and an increase in bone fragility. A novel anthropometric measure, the Body Roundness Index (BRI), provides a more accurate assessment of body fat distribution compared to traditional metrics. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study aims to explore the relationship between BRI and total BMD in U.S. adults aged 20 and above. Methods Data from NHANES (2011-2018) were examined, encompassing 9,295 participants following exclusions. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was employed to measure BMD. BRI was calculated using waist circumference (WC) and height. The study accounted for variables such as demographic traits, physical exam results, lab test findings, and survey responses. Weighted multivariable linear regression models and smooth curve fitting methods were utilized to assess the relationship between BRI and total BMD. Results The research found a notable inverse relationship between BRI and total BMD. In the model with full adjustments, an increase of one unit in BRI was linked to a 0.0313 g/cm2 reduction in total BMD (P < 0.0001). Moreover, an inflection point was identified at BRI = 9.5229, where each one-unit rise in BRI beyond this threshold corresponded to a more substantial decrease in total BMD (0.0363 g/cm2). Analysis by subgroups revealed that this negative association was consistent across most demographic and health-related categories. Conclusions The results demonstrate a notable inverse relationship between BRI and total BMD, indicating that a higher BRI could be associated with lower BMD and a potentially greater risk of developing OP. This underscores the significance of accounting for body fat distribution in preventing OP and advocates for the use of BRI as a valuable marker for early intervention approaches.

Abstract
Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for adolescent depressive symptoms, but mediating mechanisms of this association have scarcely been studied. This study is unique in examining an indirect pathway of this link via body esteem (BE) prospectively from childhood (8-12 years) to adolescence (13-18 years). In addition, potential gender moderation was examined. This study utilized data from a case-control study comparing 100 children with and without obesity matched on important confounders (age, gender, and socioeconomic status). Our findings provide support for the mediating role of BE in the link between childhood weight status and adolescent depressive symptoms at a 5-year follow-up. This mediation effect did not differ between boys and girls. The findings suggest the relevance of specifically targeting children's BE in preventive intervention programs among children with obesity to prevent future mental health problems.

Abstract
A seminal report, released in 2001 by the Institute of Medicine, spurred research on the design, implementation, and evaluation of multilevel interventions targeting obesity and related behaviors. By addressing social and environmental factors that support positive health behavior change, interventions that include multiple levels of influence (e.g., individual, social, structural) aim to bolster effectiveness and, ultimately, public health impact. With more than 20 years of multilevel obesity intervention research to draw from, this review was informed by published reviews (n = 51) and identified intervention trials (n = 103), inclusive of all ages and countries, to elucidate key learnings about the state of the science. This review provides a critical appraisal of the scientific literature related to multilevel obesity interventions and includes a description of their effectiveness on adiposity outcomes and prominent characteristics (e.g., population, setting, levels). Key objectives for future research are recommended to advance innovations to improve population health and reduce obesity.

Abstract
Background Obesity prevention in adolescents is a public health priority given its increasing prevalence and health impact of obesity. Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in overweight and obesity using a mHealth app in improving nutritional and sports knowledge, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, physical activity and anthropometric measurements in adolescents. Methods A randomised controlled trial with parallel groups that included 305 adolescents. The app includes the use of effective behavioural strategies to achieve habit change. Primary outcome variables were nutritional and sports knowledge score (GeSNK), adherence to a Mediterranean diet (KidMed) and level of physical activity (PAQ-A). Results The study included 154 participants in the mHealth group and 151 in the control group. The level of nutritional and sports knowledge was significantly higher in the mHealth group, 47 points versus 42 points. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet improved in both groups, 9 points in the mHealth group versus 8 points in the control group. Physical activity was statistically higher in the intervention group, 160 minutes/week versus 120 minutes/week. Conclusions The mHealth intervention showed a significant improvement in the level of nutritional and sports knowledge, adherence to the Mediterranean diet and time spent on physical activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the concept of self-esteem among African American and Latinx adolescents with overweight and/or obesity and depressive symptoms in the United States. METHOD Using key terms in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases, an initial search yielded 371 articles; after examining title, abstract, and full text, 33 articles remained. The concept of adolescent self-esteem was analyzed using Rodger's evolutionary method. RESULTS Several antecedents of self-esteem in this context were identified, including bullying, negative portrayal in the media, stressors and hassles, low socioeconomic status, dieting, and family dietary influences. Attributes identified were body image and misperception, body image dissatisfaction, diminished social status, and isolation. Consequences included stigma, somatic complaints, decreased earnings over a lifetime, decreased quality of life, lower educational attainment over a lifetime, and increased substance use. Increased self-esteem, increased number of friends, and in-depth friendships were associated with a lower risk of being overweight or obese. CONCLUSION Adolescent self-esteem varied based on gender, racial and ethnic group, and changed over time in the African American population but remained static in the Latinx population. Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide increasing concern. Although in adults this is easily estimated with the body mass index, in children, who are constantly growing and whose bodies are changing, the reference points to assess weight status are age and gender, and need corroboration with complementary data, making their quantification highly difficult. The present review explores the interaction spectrum of oxidative stress, selenium status, and obesity in children and adolescents. Any factor related to oxidative stress that triggers obesity and, conversely, obesity that induces oxidative stress are part of a vicious circle, a complex chain of mechanisms that derive from each other and reinforce each other with serious health consequences. Selenium and its compounds exhibit key antioxidant activity and also have a significant role in the nutritional evaluation of obese children. The balance of selenium intake, retention, and metabolism emerges as a vital aspect of health, reflecting the complex interactions between diet, oxidative stress, and obesity. Understanding whether selenium status is a contributor to or a consequence of obesity could inform nutritional interventions and public health strategies aimed at preventing and managing obesity from an early age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Relative fat mass (RFM) is a novel indicator for measuring body fat. The relationship between RFM and depression was explored using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005 to 2018. METHODS A general statistical description of the population included in the study was performed, and logistic analyses were used to explore the association between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), RFM and depression. Sensitivity analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were also conducted to investigate the association between RFM and depression. RESULTS A total of 28,836 participants were included in the study. In multivariate models, all obesity indices were associated with depression (P < 0.001). An increase of 1 SD in BMI, WC, and RFM was associated with a respective increased risk of depression of 2.3 %, 1.0 %, and 3.3 %. Excluding those taking antidepressants, the risk of depression was OR 1.88 (95 % CI: 1.26-2.79) for those with RFM in the highest quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile. After Inverse probability of weighting (IPW), the risk of depression in individuals with RFM in the highest quartile compared with individuals in the lowest quartile was 2.62 (95 % CI: 2.21-3.09). The RCS showed a possible nonlinear relationship between RFM and depression. CONCLUSIONS RFM is associated with depression, suggesting that attention to RFM may be helpful for depression research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current evidence implicates a significant association between depression and obesity and related metabolic dysfunction. The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) was recently identified as an ideal index that integrates total body fat, muscle mass, and bone mass. This study investigated the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms in adults. METHODS Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) were enrolled. Depressive symptom severity was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and generalized additive models were used to determine the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 34,575 participants were included, with a mean WWI of 11.01; 2,979 participants were suspected of having depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). A significant positive association was identified between WWI and depressive symptoms (odds ratio = 1.416, 95 % confidence interval: 1.303-1.539, P < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses suggested that the association between WWI and depressive symptoms was stronger in individuals who were female, overweight, divorced, middle-aged or older (over 40 years old), and had diabetes. Furthermore, the non-linear multivariable regression revealed an inflection point for the WWI at 11.438, and the association was only significant when the WWI was higher than this point. LIMITATIONS This study was retrospective and only included participants from the United States; therefore, further validation is needed from studies in other countries, especially middle-to-low-income countries, using longitudinal cohorts. CONCLUSIONS This study identified a significant positive association between WWI and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dual-factor model of mental health (i.e., the presence of psychological well-being along with the absence of distress) and its association with academic performance over time has been barely studied in the adolescent population, as most of the prior research focuses on psychological well-being or distress indicators in isolation. The current study analyzed the bidirectional longitudinal association between the dual-factor model of mental health and academic performance in adolescents, comprising a longitudinal assessment 2 years apart. METHODS A total of 266 secondary school students (13.9 ± 0.3 years at baseline) from Deporte, ADOlescencia y Salud study were assessed. Mental health was assessed through the Behavior Assessment System for Children and Adolescents. Academic performance was assessed through academic grades and the Test of Educational Abilities. A cross-lagged modeling approach was used to examine the bidirectional longitudinal association between mental health and academic performance. RESULTS Higher academic performance at baseline was associated with better mental health over time, but not vice versa, since this association was not bidirectional. CONCLUSION Results suggest that academic performance is an important target for developing educational interventions, as it shapes adolescents' mental health at 2 years of follow-up. IMPACT The overall picture of students' mental health and academic performance was analyzed. Academic performance may be a predictor of adolescents' mental health status. Mental health may not be a predictor of adolescents' academic performance. Good mental health should be promoted among youth with low academic performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychotic symptoms (PS) frequently occur in young adults with anxious depression (AD), yet the mediators of the associations between depression and PS remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of PS in first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) young adults with AD and attempted to elucidate the relationship between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, anxiety, depression, and PS, as well as to identify potential mediating roles. METHODS 369 FEDN young adults with AD were recruited. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale's positive subscale, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA). Fasting glucose, lipids, and thyroid function were also collected. RESULTS The prevalence of PS in young adults with AD (21.68 %) was 12.24 times higher than in non-AD patients. The HAMD scores (P = 0.005, OR = 1.23), HAMA scores (P < 0.001, OR = 1.62), and TSH levels (P = 0.025, OR = 1.20) were significant predictors of PS. The combined area under the curve value for distinguishing young adults with AD with and without PS was 0.86. We also identified serial multiple mediating effects of TSH levels and anxiety on the association of depression with PS. CONCLUSIONS These findings emphasize the role of anxiety and TSH levels as serial mediators of the association between depression and PS. Therefore, when treating PS in young adults with AD, it is important to focus not only on depression, but also on TSH levels and anxiety to maximize benefit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although lifestyle-based treatment approaches are recommended as important aspects of depression care, the quantitative influence of aggregated healthy lifestyles on depression recurrence and mortality remains unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between healthy lifestyle and the risks of first-time hospitalisation for recurrent depression and mortality. METHODS 26 164 adults with depression (mean (SD) age, 56.0 (7.9) years) were included from UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010 and followed up until 2022. Depression was defined as a physician's diagnosis in hospital admissions or the use of prescribed antidepressant medication. A weighted healthy lifestyle score (HLS) was calculated based on smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, sleep pattern, physical activity, social health, employment status and greenspace interaction. FINDINGS Over a 13.3-year follow-up, 9740 cases of first-time hospitalisation due to depression recurrence and 1527 deaths were documented. Compared with the lowest HLS tertile, the highest tertile was associated with a 27% lower risk (HR=0.73, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.77) of first-time hospitalisation for depression recurrence and a 22% (HR=0.78, 95% CI 0.68 to 0.91) lower risk of mortality among adults with depression. Lower risks of first-time hospitalisation for depression recurrence were observed among those who smoked less, drank more alcohol, followed healthier diets and sleep patterns, spent more time employed in current job or had greater exposure to greenspace. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Greater adherence to healthy lifestyle was associated with a lower risk of hospitalisation and mortality among adults with pre-existing depression. Incorporating behaviour modification as an essential part of clinical practice for depressed patients could complement medication-based therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the selection of foods and beverages in children's sports arenas in Norway. DESIGN A cross-sectional study design with a digital questionnaire was used. Descriptive statistics were used to present the results. Moreover, Pearson's χ2 tests examined the factors that could aid in distinguishing clubs with healthy or unhealthy consumables. SETTING Children's sports clubs in Norway. PARTICIPANTS Representatives from 301 children's sports clubs in Norway answered the questionnaire between September and November 2021. RESULTS In total, 89·4% of the participating sports clubs (n 301) offered soda drinks with sugar. Most of the sports clubs (88 %) reported to offer batter-based cakes such as pancakes and waffles and 63·8 % offered cakes. Furthermore, 47·5% sold hot dishes with processed meat, such as hamburgers and hot dogs. More than 80% of the sports clubs offered sweets and snacks, while 44·5% did not offer fruits, vegetables and/or berries. Notably, the important factors that distinguished sports clubs with healthier food selections from those with unhealthier selections were the presence of guidelines for the food offered and purchase agreements with food suppliers. CONCLUSIONS Educational, governmental guidelines for the promotion of healthy eating and establishing agreements with suppliers of healthier foods could help to overcome barriers to unhealthy food selection.

Abstract
Eating decisions may be influenced by an impact bias, or the tendency to overestimate the intensity and duration of emotions for future events or outcomes. In this study, we tested the impact bias, among college students, for eating a novel health food - kale chips. We also examined how an emotion adaptation recall exercise influenced emotions and eating behavior. After reading about the health benefits of kale, college students (N = 80) reported their anticipated emotions (e.g., how intensely they would experience each emotion) for eating kale chips. Following a control (n = 40) or emotion adaptation (n = 40) writing exercise, they were asked to eat these chips. They then reported their experienced emotions (e.g., how intensely they experienced each emotion) as well as their intentions to eat kale in the future. Findings indicated that participants showed a negative impact bias in which they anticipated more intense negative emotions than they experienced. However, they showed an opposite effect for positive emotions, anticipating lower positive emotion than they experienced. Relative to the control group, those who did an emotion adaptation exercise experienced lower levels of disgust after eating kale chips and reported higher intentions to eat them in the future. Subsequent analyses of consumption revealed that those in the emotion adaptation condition also ate more of the kale chips. Findings suggest that affective forecasting theory may be a useful framework through which to develop and test ideas about emotions and eating in the context of novel health foods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to describe the national distribution of depressive symptoms in Chinese children and adolescents, to examine the determinants of depressive symptoms at individual, school and province levels and to assess the gender and age differences in the effect of school factors on depressive symptoms. STUDY DESIGN This was a national cross-sectional study. METHODS A school-based online survey was conducted in mainland China from between December 1, 2021, and January 1, 2022. A total of 398,520 eligible participants were included in the analysis. School-level data were drawn from students, headteachers and Baidu Maps, and province-level data were obtained from the national human development report. The Patient Health Questionnaire-2 was used to measure depressive symptoms. RESULTS Areas with the highest mean scores for depressive symptoms were in the northeastern, inner central and southwestern regions of China. At the individual level, younger age, male sex, being an only child, Han ethnicity, lower body mass index, more days of exercise, less drinking and smoking behaviours, higher subjective family socio-economic status (SES) and popularity in school were related to fewer depressive symptoms; however, objective family SES and maternal education were not related to fewer depressive symptoms. The school-level variables of public status, psychological activities and psychological courses and province-level variable of higher Human Development Index were associated with fewer depressive symptoms. The effect of psychological courses and activities on depressive symptoms was greater in females. CONCLUSIONS The results showed multilevel factors related to depressive symptoms and emphasised the importance of implementing school-based psychological activities to ameliorate depressive symptoms in Chinese children and adolescents across age and gender.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the role of sleep quality, emotional and behavioral characteristics, and eating behavior in adolescents with obesity by means of cluster analysis. One hundred ninety-four adolescents (78 girls, 116 boys) aged 12-17 (mean 14.3 ± 2.7) with obesity (ICD-10 code E 66.0) entered the study. The Adolescent Sleep Wake Scale was used to evaluate sleep quality. The Achenbach Youth Self-Report for Ages 11-18 questionnaire was used to evaluate emotional and behavioral disturbances. The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire was used to assess maladaptive eating. k-Means cluster analysis was used to clarify heterogeneity. Four clusters were identified: the first included anxious, depressed, socially withdrawn adolescents with thought problems and somatic complaints, non-aggressive, obedient, and having mean values on the sleep quality scale, inclined to restrict their food consumption. The second consisted of rule-breaking youngsters with poor sleep quality, reluctant to restrict their food consumption. The third comprised subjects with the highest values on the sleep quality and lowest values on emotional and behavioral problems, aimed at restricting food consumption. The fourth comprised adolescents with obvious signs of emotional disorders, poorest sleep quality, disinhibited behavior, and emotional and external eating. No statistically significant difference was found between the clusters in sex distribution. Patient allocation to the second or fourth cluster was associated with significantly higher body mass index values, as opposed to the reference third cluster. Conclusion: There is significant variation in teenagers with obesity who have divergent psychological profiles, which should be taken into account. What is Known: • Patients with obesity present with different clinical characteristics. What is New: • Adolescents with obesity may be partitioned into clusters described in terms of emotional, behavioral patterns, including sleep characteristics, and maladaptive eating habits.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Globally 38.9 million children under age 5 have overweight or obesity, leading to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular complications, depression, and poor educational outcomes. Obesity is difficult to reverse and lifestyle behaviors (healthy or unhealthy) can persist from 1.5 years of age. Targeting caregivers to help address modifiable behaviors may offer a viable solution. OBJECTIVE Evaluate the impact of multicomponent family interventions on weight-based outcomes in early childhood and explore related secondary behavior outcomes. METHODS Four databases were searched (1/2017-6/2022) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of obesity-prevention interventions for children (1-5 years). Eligible studies included an objectively measured weight-based outcome, family interventions targeting the caregiver or family, and interventions including at least two behavioral components of nutrition, physical activity, or sleep. RESULTS Eleven interventions were identified consisting of four delivery modes: self-guided (n = 3), face-to-face group instruction (n = 3), face-to-face home visits (n = 2), and multiple levels of influence (n = 3). The reviewed studies reported almost no significant effects on child weight-based outcomes. Only two studies (one was an underpowered pilot study) resulted in significant positive child weight-management outcomes. Seven of the interventions significantly improved children's dietary intake. CONCLUSION Except for one, the reviewed studies reported that family based interventions had no significant effects on child weight-based outcomes. Future studies of this type should include measurements of age and sex-based body mass index (BMI) and trajectories, and also examine other important benefits to the children and families.

Abstract
Childhood obesity is a major public health challenge. Previous research has identified the impact of school-based interventions for preventing and treating obesity; we hypothesized that when curricular changes are integrated, results could be exponentiated. This study aimed to systematically review and conduct a meta-analysis of the published literature analyzing information about school-based interventions inserted in the curriculum. The Cochrane Handbook methodology was followed. An electronic search was conducted in five databases, with a specific design strategy per database. Randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies of children with nutrition and physical activity (PA) interventions inserted into the school curricula were included. The risk of bias was assessed with the Risk of Bias tool. The mean differences were pooled using a fixed-effects model for the meta-analysis. The certainty of the evidence was evaluated according to the guidelines of the Grading of the Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations working group (Protocol ID: CRD42021270557). After the screening and selection process, 12 studies were included. The interventions identified, based on the school curricula, include classroom activities and homework, among others. A meta-analysis with five intervention groups presented an overall mean difference of -0.14 body mass index (BMI) Z-score (95% CI: -0.25, -0.03) after this intervention with high certainty of the evidence. This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that nutrition and PA lessons inserted into the curricula and supported with additional activities (i.e. homework, workshops, etc.) could increase nutrition knowledge and improve attitudes toward fruit, vegetables, and water consumption, and BMI Z-score reduction.

Abstract
AIMS The present study was developed to investigate how litter reduction-induced obesity promotes early depressive-related behaviors in rodent offspring. MAIN METHODS We employed a standardized litter size reduction protocol, dividing litters into groups: normal litters (NL), consisting of six males and six females pups and small litters (SL), comprising two males and two females pups. Maternal behavior was monitored during the initial week of lactation. Subsequently, we assessed the pups for weight gain, locomotor activity, social play behavior, and performance in forced swimming test. We further evaluated the weights of retroperitoneal and perigonadal fat tissues, along with the expression of glial fibrillary acidic pprotein (GFAP) in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of the offspring. KEY FINDINGS Our results indicated that litter size reduction led to an increased the maternal behavior. In contrast, offspring from the SL group displayed greater weight gain and increased, retroperitoneal and perigonadal fat. Both male and female rodents in the SL group exhibited decreased social play behavior, and male offspring spent more time immobile during the forced swimming test, suggesting a depressive-like phenotype. Notably, we observed an increase in the GFAP expression in the prefrontal cortex of male rodents, with a trend toward increased expression in the hippocampus. SIGNIFICANCE Obesity may facilitate the development of early depressive-like behaviors, potentially associated with elevated GFAP expression in the prefrontal cortex.

Abstract
Obesity and depression represent major health problems due to their high prevalence and morbidity rates. Numerous evidences elucidated the connections between dietary habits and the incidence or severity of depression. This overview aims to investigate the intricate relationship between dietary patterns and depression with the objective of elaborating preventive strategies for childhood obesity. Literature data recognized that there is a link between mood and food choices, with certain foods selected for their impact on the brain's reward centers. This behavior parallels the one observed in substance addiction, suggesting a specific neural mechanism for food addiction that contributes to overeating and obesity. It is important to note the significant correlation between obesity and depression, indicating a shared biological pathway influencing these conditions. Stress substantially affects also eating behaviors, often leading to increased consumption of pleasurable and rewarding foods. This can trigger a cycle of overeating, weight gain, and psychological distress, exacerbating mood disorders and obesity. In addition, consumption of certain types of foods, especially "comfort foods" high in fat and calories, may provide temporary relief from symptoms of depression, but can lead to long-term obesity and further mental health problems. Understanding these complex interactions is critical to developing preventive strategies focusing on dietary, emotional, and environmental factors, thereby reducing the risk of obesity and mood disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review will examine the most current evidence for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) in the pediatric population, specifically in terms of weight loss outcomes and improvement in comorbid conditions and complications. Additionally, we compare surgical and non-surgical interventions, review current guidelines, and propose a stepwise evidence-based approach to the management of obesity in children. RECENT FINDINGS MBS is a safe option for appropriately selected pediatric patients which leads to significant and sustained weight loss. This weight loss is associated with improvement of related comorbid conditions. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has emerged as the procedure of choice with a better safety profile. Despite the evidence, very few adolescents undergo MBS. New pharmacologic agents specifically the GLP-1/GIP agents have shown early promise especially in patients under body mass index 40, but the long-term effects are unknown. MBS is an effective tool in the management of pediatric obesity, and its use has been recommended by professional societies. Early referral to a multidisciplinary obesity team can help identify appropriate patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE This meta-analysis evaluated the relationship between overweight/obesity and depressive disorders in children and adolescents. METHODS We examined the databases of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for pertinent observational studies released up until 20 February 2022. The pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of obesity and overweight with depressive disorder were calculated by means of random-effects models. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality scale were adopted to evaluate the study quality. RESULTS Finally, for this meta-analysis, we evaluated 22 observational publications covering 175 135 participants (5 cohort study articles, 1 case-control study article and 16 cross-sectional study articles). A significant positive association was found between obesity and the risk of depression (RR 1.32, 95% CI 1.09-1.60, I2 = 79.90%, Pheterogeneity < 0.001) and in the association between obesity and depressive symptoms (RR 1.16, 95% CI: 1.00-1.35, I2 = 25.0%, Pheterogeneity = 0.247). On sensitivity analysis, the pooled RRs remained robust. Subgroup analysis indicated that obese children and teenagers in western countries were more prone to depression. CONCLUSION Evidence from this meta-analysis, based on observational studies, supported the idea that obese children and adolescents are more likely to experience depression and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prevalent and detrimental complications of cancer. Emerging evidence suggests that obesity and insulin resistance are associated with CRF occurrence and severity in cancer patients and survivors. In this narrative review, we analyzed recent studies including both preclinical and clinical research on the relationship between obesity and/or insulin resistance and CRF. We also describe potential mechanisms for these relationships, though with the caveat that because the mechanisms underlying CRF are incompletely understood, the mechanisms mediating the association between obesity/insulin resistance and CRF are similarly incompletely delineated. The data suggest that, in addition to their effects to worsen CRF by directly promoting tumor growth and metastasis, obesity and insulin resistance may also contribute to CRF by inducing chronic inflammation, neuroendocrinological disturbance, and metabolic alterations. Furthermore, studies suggest that patients with obesity and insulin resistance experience more cancer-induced pain and are at more risk of emotional and behavioral disruptions correlated with CRF. However, other studies implied a potentially paradoxical impact of obesity and insulin resistance to reduce CRF symptoms. Despite the need for further investigation utilizing interventions to directly elucidate the mechanisms of cancer-related fatigue, current evidence demonstrates a correlation between obesity and/or insulin resistance and CRF, and suggests potential therapeutics for CRF by targeting obesity and/or obesity-related mediators.

Abstract
Preserving a normal body mass index (BMI) is crucial for the healthy growth and development of children. As a core aspect of executive functions, inhibitory control plays a pivotal role in maintaining a normal BMI, which is key to preventing issues of childhood obesity. By studying individual variations in inhibitory control performance and its associated connectivity-based neuromarker in a sample of primary school students (N = 64; 9-12 yr), we aimed to unravel the pathway through which inhibitory control impacts children's BMI. Utilizing resting-state functional MRI scans and a connectivity-based psychometric prediction framework, we found that enhanced inhibitory control abilities were primarily associated with increased functional connectivity in brain structures vital to executive functions, such as the superior frontal lobule, superior parietal lobule, and posterior cingulate cortex. Conversely, inhibitory control abilities displayed a negative relationship with functional connectivity originating from reward-related brain structures, such as the orbital frontal and ventral medial prefrontal lobes. Furthermore, we revealed that both inhibitory control and its corresponding neuromarker can moderate the association between food-related delayed gratification and BMI in children. However, only the neuromarker of inhibitory control maintained its moderating effect on children's future BMI, as determined in the follow-up after one year. Overall, our findings shed light on the potential mechanisms of how inhibitory control in children impacts BMI, highlighting the utility of the connectivity-based neuromarker of inhibitory control in the context of childhood obesity.

Abstract
Obesity is an increasing problem in pediatrics, leading to cardiovascular, metabolic and psychosocial complications. Additionally, for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), obesity can lead to CKD progression towards end-stage renal disease (ESRD) needing renal-replacement therapy (RRT). It is well-established that the optimal type of RRT for children with ESRD is kidney transplantation, as it provides significantly better life expectancy and quality of life. Unfortunately, pediatric patients with CKD/ESRD and obesity face barriers getting to kidney transplantation and often remain on dialysis for a long time, which negatively impacts their life expectancy and quality of life. One barrier to kidney transplant is that Body Mass Index (BMI) is still considered by most transplant centers as the main criterion for obesity assessment, although more recent evidence suggests that BMI is not the best measure of adiposity. Clearcut evidence is lacking that obesity has a long-term negative impact upon the graft. Another barrier to transplant can be bias on the part of referring providers that can deter or delay referral to an obesity treatment program. Our article describes the barriers that pediatric obese patients with CKD and ESRD face in their way towards kidney transplantation. In addition, our article encourages pediatric nephrologists to early refer their patients with CKD and ESRD who suffer from obesity to a specialized obesity treatment program and/or bariatric surgery. Our article also describes the treatment options for pediatric patients with CKD and ESRD who suffer from obesity in order to make them eligible for a kidney transplant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) serves as an innovative obesity measure, seemingly surpassing body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in evaluating lean and fat mass. This study aimed to explore the relationship between WWI and depression in United States (US) adults. METHODS This population-based study investigated adults with comprehensive WWI and PHQ-9 (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire) data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. WWI was computed by dividing WC by the square root of body weight. Weighted multivariate logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting were employed to examine linear and non-linear associations. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted. RESULTS A total of 34,528 participants were enrolled with a prevalence of depression of 7.61 %. WWI was positively related to depression with the full adjustment [odds ratio (OR) = 1.21, 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI): 1.13-1.29]. After converting WWI to a categorical variable by quartiles (Q1-Q4), compared to Q1 the highest WWI quartile was linked to an obviously increased likelihood of depression (OR = 1.51, 95 % CI: 1.29-1.76). Subgroup analysis revealed the stability of the independent positive relationship between WWI and depression (all P for trend >0.05). CONCLUSION WWI levels were positively related to an increased likelihood of depression in US adults. Our findings indicated that WWI may serve as a simple anthropometric index to predict depression.

Abstract
The increasing incidence of obesity in the pediatric population requires attention to its serious complications. It turns out that in addition to typical, well-known metabolic complications, obesity as a systemic disease carries the risk of equally serious, although less obvious, non-metabolic complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, chronic kidney disease, asthma, thyroid dysfunction, immunologic and dermatologic conditions, and mental health problems. They can affect almost all systems of the young body and also leave their mark in adulthood. In addition, obesity also contributes to the exacerbation of existing childhood diseases. As a result, children suffering from obesity may have a reduced quality of life, both physically and mentally, and their life expectancy may be shortened. It also turns out that, in the case of obese pregnant girls, the complications of obesity may also affect their unborn children. Therefore, it is extremely important to take all necessary actions to prevent the growing epidemic of obesity in the pediatric population, as well as to treat existing complications of obesity and detect them at an early stage. In summary, physicians treating a child with a systemic disease such as obesity must adopt a holistic approach to treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The long-term effects of bariatric surgery on the mental health of adolescents with severe obesity remain uncertain. We aimed to describe the prevalence of psychiatric health-care visits and filled prescription psychiatric drugs among adolescents with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery in the 5 years preceding surgery and throughout the first 10 years after surgery, and to draw comparisons with matched adolescents in the general population. METHODS Adolescents with severe obesity and who underwent bariatric surgery were identified through the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry. We included adolescents who had bariatric surgery between 2007 and 2017 and were younger than 21 years at time of surgery. Each adolescent patient was matched with ten adolescents from the general population by age, sex, and county of residence. Specialist psychiatric care and filled psychiatric prescriptions were retrieved from nationwide data registers. FINDINGS 1554 adolescents (<21 years) with severe obesity underwent bariatric surgery between 2007 and 2017, 1169 (75%) of whom were female. At time of surgery, the mean age was 19·0 years [SD 1·0], and the mean BMI was 43·7 kg/m2 (SD 5·5). 15 540 adolescents from the general population were matched with adolescents in the surgery group. 5 years before the matched index date, 95 (6·2%) of 1535 surgery patients and 370 (2·5%) of 14 643 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit (prevalence difference 3·7%; 95% CI 2·4-4·9), whereas 127 (9·8%) of 1295 surgery patients and 445 (3·6%) of 12 211 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription (prevalence difference 6·2%; 95% CI 4·5-7·8). The year before the matched index date, 208 (13·4%) of 1551 surgery patients and 844 (5·5%) of 15 308 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit (prevalence difference 7·9%; 95% CI 6·2-9·6), whereas 319 (20·6%) of 1551 surgery patients and 1306 (8·5%) of 15 308 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription (prevalence difference 12·0%; 10·0-14·1). The prevalence difference in psychiatric health-care visits peaked 9 years after the matched index date (12·0%; 95% CI 9·0-14·9), when 119 (17·6%) of 675 surgery patients and 377 (5·7%) of 6669 matched adolescents had a psychiatric health-care visit. The prevalence difference in filled psychiatric drug prescription was highest 10 years after the matched index date (20·4%; 15·9-24·9), when 171 (36·5%) of 469 surgery patients and 739 (16·0%) of 4607 matched adolescents filled a psychiatric drug prescription. The year before the matched index date, 19 (1·2%) of 1551 surgery patients and 155 (1·0%) of 15304 matched adolescents had a health-care visit associated with a substance use disorder diagnosis (mean difference 0·2%, 95% CI -0·4 to 0·8). 10 years after the matched index date, the prevalence difference had increased to 4·3% (95% CI 2·3-6·4), when 24 (5·1%) of 467 surgery patients and 37 (0·8%) of 4582 matched adolescents had a health-care visit associated with a substance use disorder diagnosis. INTERPRETATION Psychiatric diagnoses and psychiatric drug prescriptions were more common among adolescents with severe obesity who would later undergo bariatric surgery than among matched adolescents from the general population. Both groups showed an increase in prevalence in psychiatric diagnoses and psychiatric drug prescriptions leading up to the time of surgery, but the rate of increase in the prevalence was higher among adolescents with severe obesity than among matched adolescents. With the exception of health-care visits for substance use disorders, these prevalence trajectories continued in the 10 years of follow-up. Abstract
This study explores how adolescents engage with unhealthy food and beverage marketing in online settings, from a gender perspective. Employing an online ethnography approach and using go-along interviews, we explored the experiences of adolescent boys and girls aged 13-17 as they navigated their online experiences with digital food and beverage marketing. Notable themes emerged, including the identification of predatory actions by food companies, the role of protective factors such as family, and the influence of social media influencers in shaping adolescent dietary preferences. Importantly, this research unearthed gender disparities in the participants' responses. Girls, in particular, exhibited a heightened awareness of the protective role played by their families, emphasized the influence of color in marketing strategies, recognized the significance of gender in marketing, and reported exposure to alcohol advertisements-findings that boys less frequently echoed. The study underscores the importance of adolescence as a critical phase in development, during which food companies target these impressionable individuals, driven by their independence and potential for brand loyalty. Moreover, it highlights the potential avenue of gender-specific marketing, offering valuable insights into the gendered dimensions of adolescents' food marketing experiences. By examining the interplay between digital food marketing and gender, this research addresses a critical gap in the literature, shedding light on how gender influences adolescents' perceptions, responses, and behaviors in the context of food marketing strategies. These findings have the potential to inform adolescents of the marketing techniques that target them and guide policymakers in developing and implementing evidence-based regulations aimed at safeguarding adolescents from exposure to unhealthy food marketing.

Abstract
The impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adult health has been extensively examined, but the association between ACEs and sleep, emotion, behavior and academic outcomes of children and adolescents is not well known. A total of 6363 primary and middle school students were included to examine the effect of ACEs on sleep quality, emotional and behavioral problems and academic achievement and further explore the mediation role of sleep quality and emotional and behavioral problems. Children and adolescents with ACE exposure had 1.37 times risk of poor sleep quality (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-1.55), 1.91 times risk of emotional and behavioral problems (adjusted OR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.69-2.15) and 1.21 times risk of self-reported lower academic achievement (adjusted OR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.08-1.36). Most types of ACEs were significantly associated with poor sleep quality, emotional and behavioral problems and lower academic achievement. There were dose-response relationships between cumulative ACE exposure and risk of poor sleep quality, emotional and behavioral problems, and lower academic achievement. Sleep quality and emotional and behavioral performance mediated 45.9% of the effect of ACEs exposure on math scores and 15.2% of the effect of ACEs exposure on English scores. Early detection and prevention of ACEs among children and adolescents are urgent and essential, and targeted interventions for sleep and emotional and behavioral performance as well as early educational interventions are recommended for children with ACEs exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity has been shown to impair psychological health. However, psychological factors are often overlooked in both research evaluations and treatment interventions, and children's perspectives on managing obesity are underexplored. Neglecting psychosocial factors might undermine interventions. This research explored the psychological beliefs, expectations and experiences of children living with obesity (range 7-13) and attending a weight management programme (WMP). METHODS Thirty-four participants (19 females, 15 males, average age 9.5 years) completed a semistructured interview. Recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Four overarching themes were developed: (1) defining health and self-recognition; (2) external influence; feedback, stigma and comparison; (3) recognising emotions and (4) future expectations: obesity is a reality. These themes interact to influence the children's psychosocial status. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights a range of psychosocial and emotional difficulties that children living with obesity experience and suggests that these remain regardless of their attendance at a WMP. Interventions for children living with obesity should address psychosocial factors, including stress management, peer victimisation and handling feedback from others. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION As proposed by the two young people acting as patient and public involvement and engagement representatives, the utilisation of scrapbooks as a preinterview tool was particularly helpful in aiding discussion during the interviews. This innovative approach could be considered a valuable methodological technique for investigating sensitive topics with children in future research.

Abstract
Childhood obesity is a complex disease with multiple biological and psychosocial risk factors. Recently, novel digital programs were developed with growing evidence for their effectiveness in pediatric weight management studies. The ENDORSE platform consists of mobile applications, wearables, and serious games for the remote management of childhood obesity. The pilot studies included 50 mothers and their children aged 6-14 years and resulted in a clinically significant BMI z-score reduction over 4 to 5 months. This secondary analysis of the ENDORSE study focuses on parenting styles and psychosocial factors. METHODOLOGY Semi-structured clinical interviews were conducted with all participating mothers pre-and post-intervention. The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) evaluated the mothers' parenting styles. The psychosocial functioning of the participating children was assessed with the parental version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The relationship between parenting styles, psychosocial parameters, and weight outcomes was investigated using a linear regression analysis. RESULTS Weight-related stigma at school (56%), body image concerns (66%), and difficulties in family relationships (48%) were the main concerns documented during the initial psychological interviews. According to the SDQ, there was a significant decrease in children's conduct problems during the study's initial phase (pre-pilot group). A decrease in maternal demandingness (i.e., strict parenting style) was associated with a decrease in BMI z-score (beta coefficient = 0.314, p-value = 0.003). CONCLUSION Decreasing parental demandingness was associated with better weight outcomes, highlighting the importance of assessing parenting factors in pediatric weight management programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parent-child agreement regarding emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents with obesity was measured. METHODS One hundred Italian adolescents with obesity (36 males, 64 females, mean age ± SD: 15.3 ± 1.61 years, mean body mass index, BMI: 37.9 ± 5.48 kg/m2), hospitalized for a 3-week multidisciplinary body weight reduction program at Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Piancavallo-Verbania, Italy, and one of their parents (n = 100, 40 fathers, 60 mothers) participated in the study. Achenbach's Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for parents and the Youth Self Report (YSR) for teens were administered. RESULTS Most of the CBCL and YSR scores were normal, with more borderline and clinical scores being found in CBCL (29% of borderline scores in attention problems, 28% in affective problems, and 26% in ADHD; 32% of clinical scores in affective problems, 23% in withdrawn/depressed, and 22% in anxiety problems and somatic complains subscales) than in YSR (19% of borderline scores in affective behaviors and 17% in somatic complains; 15% of clinical scores in anxiety problems and 17% in withdrawn/depressed subscale). Young females reported greater anxiety problems (p = 0.009), oppositional defiant problems (p = 0.029), anxiety/depressed (p = 0.030), and internalizing problems (p = 0.045) than males. Pearson's coefficients ranged between 0.273 to 0.517. CONCLUSIONS This study provides information on the cross-informant evaluation of psychological profiles with CBCL and YSR in a clinical sample of adolescents with obesity and their parents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study examined (i) the potential differentiated relationship between three forms of social comparison previously identified as particularly relevant within the context of eating disorders (EDs) (i.e., those related to body, eating, and exercise) and depressive symptomatology among adolescents, and (ii) whether this relationship may differ according to gender and ED risk status. METHODS A sample comprising 689 adolescents (46.15 % females) aged 12-19 years (M = 15.06, SD = 2.04) were recruited using non-probabilistic techniques from nine schools in southern Spain. Cross-sectional data derived from a self-report survey which included the variables of interest were analysed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. RESULTS Bootstrapped regression/moderation analysis with 5000 resamples demonstrated two key sets of findings. Firstly, that having low self-esteem, being a girl, being at risk for ED, having social-physique anxiety, and social comparisons referring to body and exercise accounted for unique variance in depressive symptomatology. Secondly, the relationship between both eating-related and exercise-related comparisons and depressive symptomatology tended to be stronger in the group of females at risk for EDs. LIMITATIONS The study was mainly limited by the use of self-reported cross-sectional data. CONCLUSIONS Prevention and treatment efforts aimed at reducing depressive symptomatology among adolescents could benefit from incorporating content alluding to body comparison and, particularly in the case of females at risk for EDs, content alluding to eating and exercise comparisons.

Abstract
Overweight and obesity are frequent symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and abnormal lipid metabolism (ALM). There are no studies on the rate, risk factors, and underlying mechanisms of overweight/obesity in Chinese patients with MDD with comorbid ALM. The purpose of this study was to examine the rate of overweight/obesity and the associated risk factors among Chinese patients with MDD first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) with comorbid ALM. This study was a cross-sectional research work. A total of 1718 patients were enrolled. Their clinical and laboratory data were obtained. All participants were assessed with the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale. The plasma total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triacylglycerols (TG), blood glucose concentrations, thyroid peroxidase antibody (A-TPO), thyoglubulin antibody (A-TG), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyoxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3), and blood glucose concentrations were measured. ALM was identified as elevations in the plasma lipid values in this study. Of all the included subjects, the rate of ALM was 81.1%. The rate of obesity and overweight was 3.94% and 57.21%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that TSH was the independent risk factor for overweight or obesity in MDD patients (adjusted OR = 1.158, 95%CI = 1.081-1.24, p < 0.001). The risk of developing overweight or obesity in MDD with ALM with comorbid TSH abnormalities was 2.176 times higher than those without TSH abnormalities (p < 0.001). Further linear regression showed TSH level (B = 0.1, t = 3.376, p = 0.001) and systolic blood pressure (B = 0.015, t = 2.351, p = 0.019) were risk factors for a higher body mass index (BMI). Our results demonstrate that being overweight is very frequent among patients with FEDN MDD with comorbid ALM but not obesity. TSH was the risk factor for overweight and obesity in MDD patients with comorbid ALM.

Abstract
Background Income inequality is a structural determinant of health linked to increased risk of overweight and obesity, although its links to the health of adolescent populations are not well understood. This study investigated the longitudinal associations between census-division-level (CD) income inequality and BMI trajectories among Canadian adolescents, and determine if these associations vary by gender. Methods Study data are from the Cannabis use, Obesity, Mental health, Physical Activity, Alcohol use, Smoking, and Sedentary behaviour (COMPASS) cohort of adolescents attending secondary schools in Canada. Our sample included 14,675 adolescents who were followed up across three waves of the COMPASS study (2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019) and linked to 30 CDs. Measures of income inequality and other area-level covariates were derived and linked to COMPASS participants using data from the 2016 Canadian Census. We utilized multilevel mixed-effects linear regression modelling to quantify the associations between income inequality and BMI and test for effect modification by gender. Sensitivity analyses were run excluding those with BMI scores in the range considered overweight or obesity at baseline. Results Higher CD income inequality was significantly associated with higher z-transformed BMI scores (β = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.034 to 0.19). The interaction term between income inequality and time was not statistically significant, indicating that this association remained constant over time. Once stratified by gender, the association between inequality and BMI became stronger for males (β = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.060 to 0.022) and attenuated for females (β = 0.063, 95% CI = -0.047 to 0.17). Conclusion Attending schools in CDs with higher income inequality was associated with higher BMI scores among male but not female adolescents. Further work is needed to investigate this discrepancy and identify the structural mechanisms that mediate the relationship between inequality and adolescent health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity have been showed to be strongly associated with psychiatric disorders, but the exact causality and the direction of the relationship remain inconclusive. Thus, we aimed to identify the causal associations between obesity and psychiatric disorders using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with obesity, including body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI (WHRadjBMI), were extracted from a genome-wide association study of 694,649 European ancestry from the GIANT consortium. Summary level data for 10 psychiatric disorders were obtained from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary analysis, while several sensitivity analyses were applied to evaluate heterogeneity and pleiotropy. RESULTS The main MR results suggested higher BMI or WHR was positively causally associated with an increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anorexia nervosa (AN), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and Alzheimer's disease (ALZ), but negatively causally associated with an increased risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia. For the reverse direction, ADHD and MDD were associated with an increased risk of obesity, but schizophrenia and ALZ were associated with a decreased risk of obesity. CONCLUSION Our findings support evidence of causal relationships between obesity and ADHD, MDD, PTSD, ALZ, SCZ, AN, and OCD, and confirmed the bidirectional causal relationships between obesity and ADHD, MDD, SCZ, and ALZ.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep has been suggested as risk factors for depression and social anxiety in children and adolescents, but little is known about the role of individual body composition on these association. METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional survey of children and adolescents aged 6-18 years in Beijing, China, in 2020, and assessed body composition by using iDXA dual-energy X-ray bone densitometer. Generalized liner model (GLM) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were employed to analyze the associations between sleep and depression and social anxiety with different body composition. The attributable fraction (AFs) to assess the benefits of improvements of sleep in reducing depression and social anxiety odds. RESULTS Depression and social anxiety accounted for 13.1 % and 30.3 % of the study population. Sleep time was significantly associated with depression (HR = 2.35[1.58, 3.50]), and social anxiety (HR = 1.65[1.24, 2.20]); and sleep quality was significantly associated with depression (HR = 7.27[4.87, 10.84]), and social anxiety (HR = 2.54 [1.99, 3.25]) among children and adolescents. The exposure to both insufficient sleep time and poor sleep quality were associated with a higher odd of depression and social anxiety, but lower BF%, higher muscle rate and FFM/FM alleviated the adverse effects of sleep quality on depression and social anxiety. LIMITATIONS Conclusions about causality remain speculative because of the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Insufficient sleep time, poor sleep quality, high BF%, low muscle rate and FFM/FM can jointly associate with anxiety and depression. This study provides new evidence support for accurate prevention and control of mental diseases in children and adolescents with different body types.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aimed to evaluate the association between childhood adiposity and depression and anxiety risk in adulthood. METHODS MEDLINE, PsychInfo, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched on June 6, 2022, to identify studies that investigated the association between childhood weight status (age ≤18 years) and outcomes of depression and/or anxiety in adulthood (age ≥19 years). Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and results were narratively synthesized. RESULTS Sixteen studies were eligible for inclusion, with heterogeneity in methods and follow-up durations complicating comparisons. Six out of eight studies found a statistically significant association between childhood adiposity and increased likelihood of depression in adulthood, particularly in females. However, overall evidence was of moderate quality and study limitations prevented causal conclusions. In contrast, limited evidence and mixed findings were reported for the associations between childhood adiposity and depressive symptom severity or anxiety outcomes in adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Evidence suggests that childhood adiposity is associated with greater vulnerability to depression in adulthood, particularly in females. However, further research is warranted to address the limitations discussed. Future research should also explore how changes in weight status from childhood to adulthood might differentially influence the likelihood of depression.
