Abstract
OBJECTIVE Phase angle is a promising tool for diagnosing sarcopenia. This study aimed to summarize its diagnostic performance by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies, Version 2, was used to evaluate the quality of the studies. A bivariate random effects model was employed for data synthesis, and diagnostic performance was reported in terms of pooled sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Additionally, meta-regression, subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analyses were performed. RESULTS A total of 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis, involving 4,063 participants. The overall risk of bias in the included studies was high. The meta-analysis revealed that the pooled sensitivity and specificity across all studies were 0.74 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.71-0.78] and 0.75 (95 % CI: 0.70-0.79), respectively, with an AUC of 0.79 (95 % CI: 0.76-0.83). Meta-regression indicated that study design, country, population, sex-specificity, and age may influence the diagnostic performance of phase angle. The optimal diagnostic performance was observed in the cut-off interval of 4.20 to 4.50°. CONCLUSION The phase angle demonstrated moderate diagnostic performance for sarcopenia, and the possible cut-off interval is 4.20 to 4.50 °. However, large-scale, multicenter prospective studies are necessary to assess its clinical applicability at specific cut-off values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (ILD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Patients often exhibit impaired nutritional status and alterations in body composition, such as dynapenia and sarcopenia, which correlate with poor pulmonary function, reduced exercise tolerance and diminished quality of life. However, the impact of dynapenia and sarcopenia on prognosis has not been examined extensively in ILD patients. We assessed the impact of dynapenia and sarcopenia as risk factors for mortality and their prevalence in ILD. METHODS Prospective cohort study. ILD was classified into idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), connective tissue disease-related ILD (CTD-ILD) and chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (CHP). Patients over 18 years old with a confirmed diagnosis of ILD were included, while those with diagnoses of cancer, human immunodeficiency virus and neurological disease were excluded. Dynapenia and sarcopenia were determined according to EWGSOP2 criteria. RESULTS Ninety-eight ILD patients were included; 33.66% had IPF, 47.96% had CTD-ILD, and 18.37% had CHP. The mean age was 63.89 ± 12.02 years; 37.76% were male. The risk factors associated with mortality included dynapenia (HR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.10-3.77, p = 0.022), sarcopenia (HR: 1.88, 95% CI; 1.00-3.33, p = 0.049) and exercise tolerance (HR: 0.99, 95% CI; 0.99-0.99, p = 0.023), adjusted for confounding variables. The prevalence of dynapenia was 45% in ILD; 51% in IPF, 35% in CTD-ILD and 61% in CHP. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 29%; both IPF (39%) and CHP (50%) had a higher prevalence of sarcopenia than CTD-ILD (14%). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia and dynapenia are independent risk factors for mortality in ILD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate differences in body composition at intensive care unit (ICU) admission between patients with and without ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). MATERIALS AND METHODS This single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted at Tsukuba Memorial Hospital's mixed ICU in Japan. We included patients who could walk unassisted before admission, received rehabilitation post-admission, and survived for at least 48 h. Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) at ICU admission. Patients were classified into ICU-AW and non-ICU-AW groups, and their characteristics, outcomes, and body compositions were compared. RESULTS Of the 282 patients analyzed, 28 (9.9 %) developed ICU-AW. ICU-AW patients were older (79 [72-86] vs. 70 [61-77], P < 0.01) and had higher SOFA scores (8 [5-13][ vs. 3 [2-6], P < 0.01). BIA showed a higher extracellular water to total body water ratio (0.408 [0.391-0.414] vs. 0.388 [0.380-0.400], P < 0.01) and a lower phase angle (3.7 [3.3-4.9] vs. 4.9 [4.2-5.7], P < 0.01) in the ICU-AW group. Skeletal muscle mass was similar between groups (23.2 [18.9-26.0] vs. 24.8 [20.5-28.3], P = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS ICU-AW patients had poorer cellular nutritional status but similar skeletal muscle mass at ICU admission compared to non-ICU-AW patients.

Abstract
Poor muscle quality (MQ) is a hidden health condition in obesity, commonly disregarded and underdiagnosed, associated with poor health-related outcomes. This narrative review provides an in-depth exploration of MQ in obesity, including definitions, available assessment methods and challenges, pathophysiology, association with health outcomes, and potential interventions. MQ is a broad term that can include imaging, histological, functional, or metabolic assessments, evaluating beyond muscle quantity. MQ assessment is highly heterogeneous and requires further standardization. Common definitions of MQ include 1) muscle-specific strength (or functional MQ), the ratio between muscle strength and muscle quantity, and 2) muscle composition (or morphological MQ), mainly evaluating muscle fat infiltration. An individual with obesity might still have normal or higher muscle quantity despite having poor MQ, and techniques for direct measurements are needed. However, the use of body composition and physical function assessments is still limited in clinical practice. Thus, more accessible techniques for assessing strength, muscle mass, and composition should be further explored. Obesity leads to adipocyte dysfunction, generating a low-grade chronic inflammatory state, which leads to mitochondrial dysfunction. Adipocyte and mitochondrial dysfunction result in metabolic dysfunction manifesting clinically as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and fat infiltration into organs such as muscle, which in excess is termed myosteatosis. Myosteatosis decreases muscle cell function and insulin sensitivity, creating a vicious cycle of inflammation and metabolic derangements. Myosteatosis increases the risk of poor muscle function, systemic metabolic complications, and mortality, presenting prognostic potential. Interventions shown to improve MQ include nutrition, physical activity/exercise, pharmacology, and metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Background and Aims Body composition parameters associated with aerobic fitness, mirrored by maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2max), have recently gained interest as indicators of physical efficiency in facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD). Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) allows a noninvasive and repeatable estimate of body composition but is based on the use of predictive equations which, if used in cohorts with different characteristics from those for which the equation was originally formulated, could give biased results. Instead, the phase angle (PhA), a BIA raw bioelectrical parameter reflecting body fluids distribution, could provide reliable data for such analysis. Methods 33 clinically and genetically characterized FSHD patients (mean age 35.7; 10 females) and 27 sex and age-matched healthy controls (HC) were included in the analysis. BIA was used to evaluate body fluids distribution (intracellular water [ICW], extracellular water [ECW], and total body water [TBW]), and PhA, while cardiopulmonary exercise test was used to estimate V̇O2max. Results The groups were comparable for ECW and TBW. Instead, patients showed lower values of ICW (p = 0.020), ICW/ECW ratio (p < 0.001), and PhA (p < 0.001). Moreover, patients reported lower V̇O2max (p = 0.001 for absolute values; p = 0.002 for values expressed in relation to body weight) which, unlike HC, was not associated to PhA. Conclusion Based on our results, PhA of FSHD patients is lower than HC. Since PhA mirrors the ICW/ECW ratio, the lower share of ICW seems to be the basis of such difference. Given the lack of association with V̇O2max, PhA cannot be considered a reliable indicator of aerobic fitness in FSHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND the phase angle (PA) is expressed via bioelectrical impedance and an indicator of cell membrane health, integrity, hydration, and nutritional status. The associations between PA and cancer survival are inconsistent and unclear. This study aimed to assess PA's role as a prognostic marker of cancer survival. METHODS we searched PubMed and EMBASE to identify all relevant studies up to December 2023. A meta-analysis was performed to clarify PA's prognostic role for cancer patients. RESULTS a total of 30 studies covering 6587 participants were included in this study. There was a significant prognostic role for PA in the context of cancer patients' survival (HR = 0.73; 95 % CI, 0.66-0.81, p < 0.0001, I2 = 0.0 %). Patients with low PA values were 27 % less likely to survive than patients with high values. Our subgroup analyses showed that geographical population (American: HR = 0.66, 95 % CI: 0.55-0.79, I2 = 0.0 %; European: HR = 0.63, 95 % CI: 0.47-0.84, I2 = 23.2 %; Asian: HR = 0.48, 95 % CI: 0.31-0.74), the type of cancer (head and neck, colorectal, lung, or pancreatic cancer), and type of therapy (palliative vs. non-palliative treatment) did not change the prognostic value. CONCLUSIONS the findings highlight the potential of PA to be a non-invasive, cost-effective prognostic tool in oncological care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the emerging interest in phase angle (PhA), a non-invasive marker of cell hydration and nutritional status, no previous study has reported the prospective association between PhA and incident sarcopenia. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the association of baseline PhA in older subjects without sarcopenia with the development of new sarcopenia as outcome. METHODS Six-hundred ninety-six subjects without sarcopenia aged ≥75 years enrolled in an international multicenter observational study were included. Sarcopenia was assessed according to the revised EWGSOP2 criteria at baseline and in follow-up visits at 12 and 24 months. Muscle strength was assessed through the handgrip strength test using a hydraulic grip strength dynamometer, muscle mass was assessed by bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) was estimated. Physical performance was assessed by Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). RESULTS Participants who developed sarcopenia were older, less educated, had higher prevalence of osteoporosis, and lower baseline cognitive function, SPPB, handgrip strength and ASMM than those without sarcopenia. Baseline PhA was significantly lower in subjects developing sarcopenia. Nevertheless, after adjusting for all potential covariates including baseline components of sarcopenia in multiple logistic regression, neither PhA as continuous variable nor different levels of PhA were any more significant predictors of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS As an indicator of cells function, PhA could be a potential useful early marker in identifying older people at risk of developing sarcopenia but its practical applicability remains uncertain with the present data.

Abstract
This study aimed to verify the relationship between changes in thigh muscle-localized bioelectrical impedance analysis (ML-BIA) parameters and performance in a multiple-set exercise. The sample consisted of 30 female university students (22.1 ± 3.2 years). The ML-BIA parameters, including localized muscle resistance (ML-R), reactance (ML-Xc), and phase angle (ML-AngF), were evaluated using a tetrapolar bioelectric impedance device operating at a frequency of 50 KHz. The multiple sets protocol was performed with an isokinetic dynamometer. For body composition, total and leg lean soft tissue (LST) were evaluated using dual X-ray absortiometry. Student's t-test for paired samples was used to compare the ML-BIA parameters and thigh circumference pre and postexercise. Linear regression analysis was performed to verify the ∆ML-PhA as a predictor of peak torque for the three sets alone while controlling for total and leg LST. There were differences in the ML-R (∆ = 0.02 ± 1.45 Ω; p = 0.001; and E.S = 0.19), ML-Xc (∆ = 2.90 ± 4.12 Ω; p = 0.043; and E.S = 0.36), and thigh circumference (∆ = 0.82 ± 0.60 cm; p < 0.001; and E.S = 0.16) pre- and post-multiple sets. ΔML-PhA was a predictor of performance in the first set (p = 0.002), regardless of total and leg LST. However, the ΔML-PhA lost its explanatory power in the other sets (second and third), and the variables that best explained performance were total and leg LST. The ML-BIA (ML-R and ML-Xc) parameters were sensitive and changed after the multiple sets protocol, and the ΔML-PhA was a predictor of performance in the first set regardless of the total and leg LST.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Phase angle (PhA) reflects cell membrane integrity and vitality and is an indicator of sarcopenia. PhA is associated with physical function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To our knowledge, the association between PhA and physical activity (PA) has not been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether PhA reflects PA in patients with COPD. METHODS This single-center, cross-sectional, observational study included 103 patients with stable COPD (87 men; mean age, 74.7 ± 8.1 y; mean forced expiratory volume in 1s %predicted value, 58.9 ± 20.4%). PhA was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Patients were stratified into low (n = 54) and high (n = 49) PhA groups based on median values (4.3° ± 0.6° and 5.4° ± 0.5°, respectively). PA was calculated as the average daily duration of high-intensity light PA (HLPA; 2.0-2.9 metabolic equivalents [METs] of PA) and moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA; >3 METs). Correlation and multivariate analyses using multiple regression analysis were performed to confirm the association between PhA and PA. RESULTS The high-PhA group demonstrated greater HLPA (104.4 [16.5-332.5] versus 131.3 [61.1-328.7] min, P = 0.005) and MVPA (19.5 [4.7-96.0] versus 46.6 [8.9-139.3] min, P < 0.001) than the low-PhA group. PhA was positively correlated with HLPA (r = 0.32, P < 0.001) and MVPA (r = 0.49, P < 0.001). MVPA (β = 0.178, P = 0.029) and HLPA (β = 0.158, P = 0.026) were associated with PhA independent of age, sex, body mass index, respiratory function, muscle strength, skeletal muscle mass index, and 6-min walking distance. CONCLUSION In patients with COPD, PhA may reflect PA as well as muscle function.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the impact of resistance training (RT) on phase angle (PhA) in middle-aged and older individuals via meta-analysis, explore effects in subgroups, and identify optimal RT protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched five databases using predefined criteria, assessed literature quality per Cochrane 5.1 Handbook, and used Revman 5.3 for effect size aggregation, bias assessment, sensitivity analysis, and subgroup analysis. RESULTS RT improved PhA in middle-aged and older individuals (d = 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.27-0.40, P < 0.05). Effective subgroups included Suspension (d = 0.62, 95 % CI: 0.33-0.90, P < 0.05), free-weights and machine (d = 0.36, 95 % CI: 0.28-0.45, P < 0.05), equipment training (d = 0.24, 95 % CI: 0.13-0.36, P < 0.05), and moderate-intensity RT (d = 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.27-0.42, P < 0.05). RT was conducted 2-3 times/week (d = 0.20, 95 % CI: 0.01-0.38, P < 0.05) or (d = 0.38, 95 % CI: 0.30-0.47, P < 0.05). PhA improved after 8 weeks (d = 0.37, 95 % CI: 0.23-0.51, P < 0.05), 12 weeks (d = 0.35, 95 % CI: 0.26-0.44, P < 0.05), and ≥ 24 weeks (d = 0.26, 95 % CI: 0.11-0.41, P < 0.05) of RT in aged and older individuals. Low- and high-intensity RT, elastic band training, and weekly exercises did not significantly improve PhA. CONCLUSIONS RT enhances PhA in middle-aged and older adults. For optimal results, we recommend 2-3 weekly sessions of free weights and machine training lasting at least 8 weeks.

Abstract
Background Older adults experience a significant decline in muscle integrity and function with aging. Early detection of decreased muscle quality can pave the way for interventions to mitigate the progression of age-related physical declines. Phase angle (PhA) and impedance ratio (IR) are measures of muscle integrity, which can be assessed quickly via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and may be indicative of physical function. Objective This study aimed to characterize the relationships among handgrip strength (HGS), sit-to-stand (STS), BTrackS balance scores, fear of falling (evaluated using the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International [Short FES-I]), and IR among community-dwelling older adult women classified as having a low or high PhA. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 85 older women (mean age 75.0, SD 7.2 years; mean weight 71.0, SD 15.0 kg; mean height 162.6, SD 6.1 cm). To examine the influence of PhA on performance measures, participants were divided into 2 PhA groups: high (>4.1°; n=56) and low (≤4.1°; n=29). Data were nonnormative; hence, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate between-group differences, and Kendall τ coefficients were used to determine the partial correlations. Results The low PhA group had a significantly higher IR (mean 0.85, SD 0.03) than the high PhA group (mean 0.81, SD 0.03; r=.92; P<.001). The high PhA group had superior HGS (mean 21.4, SD 6.2 kg; P=.007; r=0.36), BTrackS balance scores (mean 26.6, SD 9.5 cm; P=.03; r=0.30), and STS scores (mean 16.0, SD 5.5; P<.001; r=0.49) than the low PhA group (mean HGS 17.6, SD 4.7 kg; mean BTrackS balance score 37.1, SD 21.1 cm; mean STS score 10.7, SD 6.2). Both PhA and IR were significantly correlated with HGS and BTrackS balance, STS, and Short FES-I scores (P<.05). However, on adjusting for the whole sample's age, only PhA was strongly correlated with HGS (τb=0.75; P=.003) and STS scores (τb=0.76; P=.002). Short FES-I scores were moderately correlated with IR (τb=0.46; P=.07) after controlling for age. No significant between-group differences were observed for height, weight, or BMI. Conclusions PhA and IR are associated with physical function and the fear of falling in older women. However, only PhA was significantly associated with physical function (HGS and STS) independent of age. Conversely, only IR was significantly associated with the fear of falling. Diminished physical function and increased IR appear to be characteristics of older women with a PhA of ≤4.1°. These findings suggest that PhA and IR measured through BIA together may serve as a valuable tool for early identification of older women at the risk of functional decline and a heightened fear of falling.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the role of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and phase angle measurement in assessing malnutrition in head and neck (n = 37) and brain (n = 63) tumor patients received radiotherapy. Common nutritional screening and assessment tests were used to identify malnutrition in the patients. Each patient underwent these tests once, along with phase angle measurement. Additionally, inflammation parameters, including neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic inflammatory index (SII), were calculated. All study results were correlated with the phase angle cutoff point of 5.72°. The phase angle demonstrated significant correlations with subjective global assessment (SGA), mini nutritional assessment (MNA) scores, BIA parameters, nutritional index, NLR, and SII (p < 0.05). Moreover, in head and neck tumor patients, those with higher standardized phase angle values exhibited significantly better two-year overall survival (32.1% vs. 87.5%, p = 0.006). The phase angle measurement is a convenient, noninvasive, and reproducible method that can complement existing tools for assessing malnutrition risk in radiotherapy patients. The significant correlations observed between the phase angle and various nutritional, inflammation markers and prognosis highlight its potential utility. Further studies incorporating a larger patient cohort will be beneficial in establishing a standard phase angle reference value for cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The predictive value of phase angle for sarcopenia diagnosis has been discussed for years. The present investigation was conducted to determine the association between phase angle and sarcopenia in patients with COPD. METHODS In this case-control study, 222 smoker men were divided into healthy and COPD groups. COPD was diagnosed by a pulmonologist through spirometry. Anthropometric indices, phase angle, muscle function, sarcopenia, and dietary intake were assessed. RESULTS A significant inverse association was observed between phase angle and sarcopenia after adjustment for age and energy intake (OR: 0.31, 95% CI 0.18-0.52) and after adjustment for BMI (OR: 0.31, 95% CI 0.18-0.52). A significant decrease was detected in anthropometric indices and indicators of sarcopenia and muscle function in COPD cases compared to the healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS Although further studies are suggested, phase angle might be considered an indicator of sarcopenia and muscle function in COPD patients.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has been proposed as a significant part of the pathogenesis of fibromyalgia, and the phase angle in bioelectrical impedance analysis has been explored as a potential technique to screen oxidative abnormalities. This study recruited 35 women with fibromyalgia and 35 healthy women, who underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis and maximum isometric handgrip strength tests. Women with fibromyalgia showed lower bilateral handgrip strength (right hand: 16.39 ± 5.87 vs. 27.53 ± 4.09, p < 0.001; left hand: 16.31 ± 5.51 vs. 27.61 ± 4.14, p < 0.001), as well as higher body fat mass (27.14 ± 10.21 vs. 19.94 ± 7.25, p = 0.002), body fat percentage (37.80 ± 8.32 vs. 30.63 ± 7.77, p < 0.001), and visceral fat area (136.76 ± 55.31 vs. 91.65 ± 42.04, p < 0.01) compared with healthy women. There was no statistically significant difference in muscle mass between groups, but women with fibromyalgia showed lower phase angles in all body regions when compared with healthy control women (right arm: 4.42 ± 0.51 vs. 4.97 ± 0.48, p < 0.01; left arm: 4.23 ± 0.48 vs. 4.78 ± 0.50, p < 0.001; trunk: 5.62 ± 0.77 vs. 6.78 ± 0.84, p < 0.001; right leg: 5.28 ± 0.56 vs. 5.81 ± 0.60, p < 0.001; left leg: 5.07 ± 0.51 vs. 5.69 ± 0.58, p < 0.001; whole body: 4.81 ± 0.47 vs. 5.39 ± 0.49, p < 0.001). Moreover, whole-body phase-angle reduction was only predicted by the presence of fibromyalgia (R2 = 0.264; β = 0.639; F(1,68) = 24.411; p < 0.001). Our study revealed significantly lower phase angle values, lower handgrip strength, and higher fat levels in women with fibromyalgia compared to healthy controls, which are data of clinical relevance when dealing with such patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nutritional deficiency, especially malnutrition, is frequent in cancer patients and is associated with changes in body composition, such as low muscle mass. Phase angle (PhA) has been used as a prognostic indicator and may be related to nutritional status, functionality, and quality of life in these patients. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of chemotherapy treatment on PhA values, comparing the PhA variation before and after treatment, and to evaluate the PhA correlation, as a muscle mass surrogate, with the physical domain of quality of life, functionality, and nutritional risk in a sample of patients with cancer. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy for the first time. All patients aged 18 years or older, newly diagnosed, and undergoing chemotherapy for the first time were included. To analyze the difference in the PhA means according to the different classification variables, the t-test - or ANOVA - was used. The variation of the final and initial PhA was evaluated through the linear regression test. RESULTS A total of 175 patients were analyzed, of which 66.3% were female. The mean PhA of the initial assessment was significantly higher when compared to the final assessment of the patients PhA (p = 0.018). In both the initial and final assessments, PhA was correlated with the physical domain (r = 0.29; p < 0.001 and r = 0.19; p = 0.021) and with the functionality score (r = - 0.32; p < 0.001 and r = - 0.30; p < 0.001) and total PG-SGA (r = - 0.31; p < 0.001 and r = - 0.23; p = 0.006). CONCLUSION PhA can be considered a predictor of physical quality of life and functionality in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment.

Abstract
Undernutrition is highly prevalent in children who are critically ill and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, including a higher risk of infection due to transitory immunological disorders, inadequate wound healing, reduced gut function, longer dependency on mechanical ventilation, and longer hospital stays compared with eutrophic children who are critically ill. Nutrition care studies have proposed that early interventions targeting nutrition assessment can prevent or minimize the complications of undernutrition. Stress promotes an acute inflammatory response mediated by cytokines, resulting in increased basal metabolism and nitrogen excretion and leading to muscle loss and changes in body composition. Therefore, the inclusion of body composition assessment is important in the evaluation of these patients because, in addition to the nutrition aspect, body composition seems to predict clinical prognosis. Several techniques can be used to assess body composition, such as arm measurements, calf circumference, grip strength, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and imaging examinations, including computed tomography and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. This review of available evidence suggests that arm measurements seem to be well-established in assessing body composition in children who are critically ill, and that bioelectrical impedance analysis with phase angle, handgrip strength, calf circumference and ultrasound seem to be promising in this evaluation. However, further robust studies based on scientific evidence are necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing cirrhosis. However, body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) may not be indicative of body composition parameters that predispose to cirrhosis. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a noninvasive cost-efficient method for more detailed estimation of body composition. METHODS We examined patients with cirrhosis who underwent BIA as part of enrollment into a prospective cohort study. We examined the correlation between BIA variables, BMI, and WHR. We performed sex-adjusted and race-adjusted and race-specific multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the association between anthropometric variables and risk factors [NAFLD, alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), and HCV]. RESULTS We analyzed data from 348 cirrhosis patients; 23.3% were women; 48.3% were non-Hispanic White; 19.3% were Hispanic; and 30.7% were African American. The cirrhosis etiology was 21.8% NAFLD, 56.9% HCV mostly cured, and 11.5% ALD. Several BIA variables correlated well with BMI, and others showed modest correlations, but none correlated well with WHR. Higher body fat mass and basal metabolic rate were positively associated, while higher lean body mass, dry lean mass, total body water, or skeletal muscle mass were negatively associated with NAFLD. Associations between these BIA parameters and ALD-related cirrhosis were in the opposite direction. These associations of BIA variables were seen only in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White patients but not non-Hispanic Blacks. BIA variables were more predictive of cirrhosis etiology than BMI or WHR. CONCLUSIONS Among patients with cirrhosis, several BIA-derived measurements indicative of body fat and muscle are associated with NAFLD and ALD etiology. BIA variables show stronger associations, as well as race/ethnicity-specific associations, with cirrhosis etiology than those of BMI or WHR.

Abstract
Low phase angle (PhA), as determined via bioelectrical impedance analysis, reflects unhealthy aging and mortality. In this study, we assessed whether nutritional status, including serum nutritional markers and dietary habits, is related to PhA in older individuals. We recruited 212 participants (aged ≥ 65 years) who underwent medical health checkups. PhA was measured using a multi-frequency impedance body composition analyzer. Habitual food and nutrient intake was evaluated using a brief, self-administered diet history questionnaire. Low PhA values were defined as ≤4.95 in males and ≤4.35 in females. Males with low PhA had poor exercise habits (p = 0.0429) and a lower body mass index (p = 0.0024). PhA was significantly correlated with serum cholinesterase levels, a nutritional status marker (r = 0.3313, p = 0.0004 in males; r = 0.3221, p = 0.0070 in females). The low-PhA group had significantly lower total energy and carbohydrate intake per ideal body weight (IBW) than the high-PhA group in males (total energy intake:30.2 ± 9.8 and 34.5 ± 9.3 kcal/kg/day, p = 0.0307; carbohydrate intake:15.2 ± 4.9 and 18.0 ± 5.8 kcal/kg/day, p = 0.0157). Total energy intake per IBW (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.94 [0.89-1.00] per 1 kcal/kg/day increase) was independently associated with a low PhA in males. Our study revealed that lower total energy intake independently impacted low PhA in older males.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to verify whether bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) can support the clinical evaluation of sarcopenia in elderly individuals and evaluate the relationships between phase angle (PhA), physical performance, and muscle mass. METHODS The sample comprised 134 free-living elderly individuals of both sexes aged 69-91 years. Anthropometric parameters, grip strength, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry findings, bioimpedance analysis results, and physical performance were also measured. The impedance vector distributions were evaluated in elderly individuals using BIVA. RESULTS BIVA revealed significant differences between the sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups (both sexes). The sarcopenia group had a significantly lower PhA than the non-sarcopenia group in both sexes (p < 0.05). PhA was significantly correlated with age, appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM), handgrip strength (HGS), and muscle quality in both sexes and significantly correlated with ASM/Height2 and physical performance in males. CONCLUSION BIVA can be used as a field assessment method in elderly Koreans with sarcopenia. PhA is a good indicator of muscle strength, muscle quality, and physical performance in males. These methods can help diagnose sarcopenia in elderly individuals with reduced mobility.

Abstract
The aim of the present cross-sectional exploratory pilot study was to analyze the ability of the Phase Angle (PhA) to predict physical function, muscle strength and bone indicators, upon adjusting for potential confounders [age, sex, lean mass, and body mass index (BMI)]. This study included 56 physically independent older adults (age, 68.29 ± 3.01 years; BMI, 28.09 ± 4.37 kg/m2). A multi-frequency segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to measure PhA at 50 KHz. Additionally, physical function was assessed through four functional capacity tests [30-sec chair-stand; seated medicine ball throw (SMBT); timed up & go; and 6-min walking test (6 MWT)], muscle strength through the handgrip test (dominant side) and maximal isokinetic strength of the dominant knee flexor and extensor. Moreover, bone indicators and body composition were assessed through the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. PhA was significantly associated with SMBT (r = 0.375, effect size (ES) = moderate); 6 MWT (r = 0.396, ES = moderate); 30-sec chair-stand (rho = 0.314, ES = moderate); knee extension (rho = 0.566, ES = large) and flexion (r = 0.459, ES = moderate); handgrip (rho = 0.432, ES = moderate); whole-body bone mineral content (BMC) (r = 0.316, ES = moderate); femoral neck BMC (r = 0.469, ES = moderate); and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) (rho = 0.433, ES = moderate). Additionally, the results of multiple regression analysis demonstrated that PhA is significantly associated with SMBT (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.629), 6 MWT (p = 0.004; R2 = 0.214), knee extension (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.697), knee flexion (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.355), handgrip test (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.774), whole-body BMC (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.524), femoral neck BMC (p = 0.001; R2 = 0.249), and femoral neck BMD (p = 0.020; R2 = 0.153). The results of the preliminary analysis suggested that PhA is linked to muscle strength and some factors related to physical function and bone quality in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Prolonged length of stay (LOS) and discharge disposition following liver transplantation are associated with postoperative complications and increased healthcare utilization. This study evaluated the relationship between CT-derived psoas muscle measurements and hospital LOS, intensive care unit (ICU) LOS, and discharge disposition after liver transplant. The psoas muscle was chosen given its ease of measurement with any radiological software. A secondary analysis assessed the relationship between the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (ASPEN/AND) malnutrition diagnosis criteria and CT-derived psoas muscle measures. METHODS CT-derived measures of psoas muscle density (mHU) and cross-sectional area at the level of the third lumbar vertebrae were obtained from preoperative CT scans of liver transplant recipients. Cross-sectional area measures were corrected for body size to generate a psoas area index variable (cm2/m2; PAI). RESULTS Each 1-unit increase in PAI was associated with a reduced hospital LOS of 4 days (R2 = 0.07). Each 5-unit increase in mean Hounsfield units (mHU) was associated with a reduced hospital and ICU LOS of 5 and 1.6 days, respectively (R2 = 0.22 and 0.14, respectively). Mean PAI and mHU were higher in patients who discharged to home. PAI was reasonably identified through ASPEN/AND malnutrition criteria, but there was no difference in mHU between those with and without malnutrition. CONCLUSION Measures of psoas density were associated with both hospital and ICU LOS and discharge disposition. PAI was associated with hospital LOS and discharge disposition. CT-derived measures of psoas density may be a valuable complement to preoperative liver transplant nutrition assessment using traditional ASPEN/AND malnutrition criteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity is characterized not only by an increase of fat mass but also by alterations in skeletal muscle. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA)-derived phase angle (PhA) may provide specific information on the inherent characteristics of fat-free mass, and is widely used as an index of poor nutritional status. The aim of this study was to describe whether and to what extent PhA varies depending on age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) in individuals with different weight status. METHODS We selected 1877 participants for this retrospective study (two weight status groups): 983 individuals with obesity (age 40 ± 13.9 y; BMI 39.5 ± 7.2 kg/m²) and 894 controls (age 40 ± 13.3 y; BMI 24.6 ± 2.7 kg/m²). Anthropometry and PhA at 50 kHz for the whole body were performed in all participants. RESULTS PhA was greater in men than in women, although a decline of PhA was observed with age, which was linear in women and occurred in men after 40 y of age. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed with increasing BMI in either sex; lower values might be observed when BMI >50 kg/m². CONCLUSIONS A more detailed appraisal of BIA-derived PhA in obesity is reported in the present study, providing basic data that might be taken into consideration in prevention and clinical nutrition. Further studies are needed to explore differences of PhA in individuals with different weight status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioelectric impedance vector analysis (BIVA) is a reliable tool to assess body composition. The aim was to study the association of BIVA-derived phase angle (PA) and standardized PA (SPA) values and the occurrence of surgery-related morbidity. METHODS Patients undergoing hepatectomy for cancer in two Italian centers were prospectively enrolled. BIVA was performed the morning of surgery. Patients were then stratified for the occurrence or not of postoperative morbidity. RESULTS Out of 190 enrolled patients, 76 (40%) experienced postoperative complications. Patients with morbidity had a significant lower PA, SPA, body cell mass, and skeletal muscle mass, and higher extracellular water and fat mass. At the multivariate analysis, presence of cirrhosis (OR 7.145, 95% CI:2.712-18.822, p < 0.001), the Charlson comorbidity index (OR 1.236, 95% CI: 1.009-1.515, p = 0.041), the duration of surgery (OR 1.004, 95% CI:1.001-1.008, p = 0.018), blood loss (OR 1.002. 95% CI: 1.001-1.004, p = 0.004), dehydration (OR 10.182, 95% CI: 1.244-83.314, p = 0.030) and SPA < -1.65 (OR 3.954, 95% CI: 1.699-9.202, p = 0.001) were significantly and independently associated with the risk of complications. CONCLUSION Introducing BIVA before hepatic resections may add valuable and independent information on the risk of morbidity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The phase angle (PhA), calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis, is used as a nutritional risk indicator. A low preoperative PhA has been reported as a marker of postoperative complications in patients with cancer; however, the relationship between the PhA and postoperative complications in patients with lung cancer remains unknown. We conducted this study to assess the predictive ability of the preoperative PhA for postoperative complications in patients undergoing surgery for primary lung cancer. METHODS We reviewed the data on 240 patients who underwent surgery for primary lung cancer at our institution between August, 2019 and August, 2021. RESULTS The PhA value in this study was 4.7 ± 0.7°. According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, grade ≥ II postoperative complications occurred in 53 patients (22.0%). Based on the multivariate logistic analysis, only the PhA (odds ratio, 0.51, 95% confidence interval, 0.29-0.90, p = 0.018) was an independent predictor of Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ II postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS The PhA may be a valuable marker for predicting the risk of postoperative complications following lung cancer surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have alterations in body composition, such as low cell integrity, body cell mass, and disturbances in water distribution evidenced by higher impedance ratio (IR), low phase angle (PhA), as well as low strength, low muscle mass, and sarcopenia. Body composition alterations are associated with adverse outcomes. However, according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2), the impact of these alterations on mortality in COPD patients is not well-established. Our aims were to evaluate whether low strength, low muscle mass, and sarcopenia impacted mortality in COPD patients. METHODS A prospective cohort study performance was conducted with COPD patients. Patients with cancer, and asthma were excluded. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Low strength and muscle mass, and sarcopenia were defined according to EWGSOP2. RESULTS 240 patients were evaluated, of whom 32% had sarcopenia. The mean age was 72.32 ± 8.24 years. The factors associated with lower risk of mortality were handgrip strength (HR:0.91, CI 95%; 0.85 to 0.96, p = 0.002), PhA (HR:0.59, CI 95%; 0.37 to 0.94, p = 0.026) and exercise tolerance (HR:0.99, CI 95%; 0.992 to 0.999, p = 0.021), while PhA below the 50th percentile (HR:3.47, CI 95%; 1.45 to 8.29, p = 0.005), low muscle strength (HR:3.49, CI 95%; 1.41 to 8.64, p = 0.007) and sarcopenia (HR:2.10, CI 95%; 1.02 to 4.33, p = 0.022) were associated with a higher risk of mortality. CONCLUSION Low PhA, low muscle strength, and sarcopenia are independently associated with poor prognosis in COPD patients.

Abstract
Background Anti-TNF therapy has been found to exert an influence on long-term nutritional status and even reverse malnutrition in patients with Crohn's disease. Aims to observe the effect of anti-TNF therapy on nutritional status in patients with Crohn's disease, investigate the correlation between the timing of anti-TNF therapy and the human body composition and examine independent body composition factors for predicting malnutrition in these patients. Methods This was a retrospective study of 115 patients with Crohn's disease. Body composition parameters were assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis. The nutritional status of the patients was determined by NRS2002 and MNA. Results The BMI, BFMI, FFMI, BCMI, SMI, BMC, intracellular water, protein and BMR were significantly lower in patients without any biologic agents (p < 0.05). Negative correlations were found between BMC, intracellular water, extracellular water, protein and BMR and the interval between the first symptom and first dose by Spearman's correlation analysis (r < 0, p < 0.05). Low BMI (OR 0.602, 95% CI 0.434-0.836, p = 0.002), low FFMI (OR 0.678, 95% CI 0.507-0.906, p = 0.009), and low BCMI (OR 0.564, 95% CI 0.367-0.868, p = 0.009) were independent risk factors for malnutrition in Crohn's disease patients. Anti-TNF therapy tended to reduce the malnutrition probability as assessed by Cox regression analysis (OR: 0.217, 95% CI 0.057-0.821, p = 0.024). Conclusion Body composition analysis is predictive of malnutrition in patients with Crohn's disease. Early application of anti-TNF therapy significantly affected skeletal muscle mass, fat mass and bone mineral content, supporting their long-term nutritional status and reducing their probability of malnutrition.

Abstract
AIMS The concomitant increase in skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and decrease in fat mass has been termed body recomposition. This study aimed to analyze the influence of pre-training levels of fat mass on body recomposition, muscular strength, and (phase angle) PhA after 24 weeks of resistance training (RT) in older women. METHODS Data from 99 older women (68.6 ± 5.7 years, 65.7 ± 8.6 kg, 155.1 ± 5.8 cm, 27.2 ± 3.1 kg/m2) was retrospectively analyzed. Participants were separated into tertiles according to the amount of fat mass at baseline as follows: low fat mass (L-FM, n = 33), moderate fat mass (M-FM, n = 33), and high fat mass (H-FM, n = 33). The participants underwent a RT program consisting of eight exercises, three sets per exercise, with a load between 8 and 15 RM, performed three times per week for 24 weeks. The SMM and fat mass were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Body recomposition was determined by the composite Z-score of changes in SMM and fat mass. One repetition maximum (1RM) tests in chest press, knee extension, and preacher curl were assessed to verify muscular strength. Bioimpedance was used to determine phase angle. RESULTS Results indicated that after the RT period, a greater positive body recomposition was observed in the L-FM group than in M-FM and H-FM groups. Moreover, all groups increased muscular strength and phase angle with no significant difference among groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The present study results suggest that the initial amount of fat mass influences the body recomposition induced by RT in older women, with those with lower pre-training fat mass levels presenting higher levels of body recomposition. However, improvements in muscular strength and phase angle are not dependent on the amount of initial fat mass in older women.

Abstract
Introduction Phase angle (PhA, degrees), measured via bioimpedance (BIA, 50 kHz), is an index that has been used as an indicator of nutritional status and mortality in several clinical situations. This study aimed to determine the relationship between 6-year changes in PhA and total mortality as well as the risk of incident morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) during 18 years of follow-up among otherwise healthy adults. Methods A random subset (n = 1,987) of 35-65 years old men and women was examined at the baseline in 1987/1988 and 6 years later in 1993/1994. Measures included weight, height, and whole-body BIA, from which PhA was calculated. Information on lifestyle was obtained through a questionnaire. The associations between 6-year PhA changes (ΔPhA) and incident CVD and CHD were assessed by Cox proportional hazard models. The median value of ΔPhA was used as the reference value. The hazard ratio (HR) model and confidence intervals (CIs) of incident CVD and CHD were used according to the 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th percentiles of ΔPhA. Results During 18 years of follow-up, 205 women and 289 men died. A higher risk of both total mortality and incident CVD was present below the 50th percentile (Δ = -0.85°). The highest risk was observed below the 5th percentile (ΔPhA = -2.60°) in relation to total mortality (HR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.10-2.19) and incident CVD (HR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.16-2.00). Discussion The larger the decrease in PhA, the higher the risk of early mortality and incident CVD over the subsequent 18 years. PhA is a reliable and easy measure that may help identify those apparently healthy individuals who may be at increased risk of future CVD or dying prematurely. More studies are needed to confirm our results before it can be definitively concluded that PhA changes can improve clinical risk prediction.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is commonly defined as the age-related loss of muscle mass and function and may be caused by several factors, such as genetics, environmental conditions, lifestyle, drug use, and, in particular, comorbidities. People with pre-existing conditions are more likely to develop sarcopenia and subsequently have a less favorable prognosis. Recently, phase angle (PhA), which is derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), has received a great deal of attention, and numerous studies have been carried out to examine the relationship between PhA and sarcopenia in different conditions. Based on these studies, we expect that PhA could be used as a potential marker for sarcopenia in the future.

Abstract
Age-related changes in body composition reflect an increased risk for disease as well as disability. Bioimpedance analysis is a safe and inexpensive bed side method to measure body composition, but the calculation of body compartments with BIA is hampered in older adults. Phase angle, a raw parameter derived from bioimpedance analysis, is free from calculation-inherent errors. It declines with age and disease and is highly predictive of a variety of clinical outcomes as well as mortality. This review summarizes the current evidence linking the phase angle to geriatric syndromes such as malnutrition, sarcopenia and frailty and also investigates whether the phase angle reacts to interventions. Since the majority of studies show an association between the phase angle and these geriatric syndromes, a low phase angle is not suitable to exclusively indicate a specific condition. It does not inform on the underlying cause and as such, a low phase angle mainly indicates increased risk. Phase angle decline over time is reflected by deterioration of e.g. frailty status. It reacts to physical training and detraining, but studies investigating whether these induced changes are also associated with improved outcome are missing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Assessment of the raw parameters derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has gained emphasis in critically ill patients. The phase angle (PhA) reflects the integrity of the cell membrane, and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) is indicative of patients' hydration status. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these parameters are associated with clinical outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. METHODS We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science for all published observational studies without language restrictions up to April 2022. Two reviewers independently performed study selection and data extraction. We judged the risk of bias by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the certainty of evidence by the GRADE approach. Mortality was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included ICU length of stay, hospital length of stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, nutritional risk, and malnutrition. A meta-analysis with a random-effect model was performed to combine data on R version 3.6.2. RESULTS Twenty-seven studies were included in the systematic review (4872 participants). Pooled analysis revealed that patients with low PhA had a higher risk of death (14 studies; RR = 1.82, 95% CI 1.46 to 2.26; I2 = 42%) and spent more days in ICU (6 studies; MD = 1.79, 95% CI 0.33 to 3.24, I2 = 69%) in comparison to patients with normal PhA. The pooled analysis also showed higher PhA values in survivors compared to non-survivor patients (12 studies; MD = 0.75°, 95% CI 0.60° to 0.91°, I2 = 31%). Overhydration defined by BIVA was not a predictor of mortality (4 studies; RR = 1.01, 95% CI 0.70 to 1.46; I2 = 0%). More than 40% of primary studies were classified with a high risk of bias, and the quality of evidence ranged from low to very low. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis revealed, with limited evidence, that low PhA was associated with higher mortality and ICU length of stay, while overhydration identified by BIVA was not a predictor of death in critically ill patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Severe acute COVID-19 has taken on pandemic proportions with growing interest in identification of prognostic factors for mortality. Standardized bioelectrical impedance (BI) phase angle (SPhA), which is PhA adjusted by age and sex, has been related to mortality in patients with several diseases but never investigated in COVID-19. Inflammation, a consequence of COVID-19 infection, affects fluid status (hydration) and can be identified with PhA. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive role of PhA on 90 days survival of adults with COVID-19. METHODS We studied 127 consecutive patients diagnosed with COVID-19. BI measurements determined with a 50 kHz phase-sensitive BI device, body composition parameters and laboratory markers were evaluated as predictors of mortality. RESULTS Non-surviving COVID-19 patients had significantly lower PhA and SPhA values (p < 0.001) and increased hydration (p < 0.001) compared to surviving patients. Patients in the lowest SPhA quartile had increased (p < 0.001) mortality and hospital stay, hyperhydration (p < 0.001), increased inflammation biomarkers [CRP (p < 0.001)], decreased nutritional parameters: body mass cell index [BCMI (p < 0.001) albumin (p < 0.001)], and reduced other biomarkers [D-dimer (p = 0.002)]. Multivariate analysis (Cox regression) revealed that PhA and hydration status, adjusted for age, sex, BMI, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia or heart disease, were associated (p < 0.001) with increased mortality. The hazard ratio was 2.48 (95% CI, 1.60-3.84, p < 0.001) for PhA and 1.12 (95% CI, 1.04-1.20, p = 0.003) for hydration percentage. PhA <3.95° was the cut-off for predicting mortality in acute COVID-19 with 93.8% sensitivity and 66.7% specificity. PhA offers greater sensitivity as a predictive prognostic test at admission, compared to the established analytical parameters of poor prognosis (CRP, lymphocytes, prealbumin). CONCLUSIONS Low PhA (<3.95°), independent of age, sex, BMI, and comorbidities, is a significant predictor of mortality risk in COVID-19. These findings suggest that the evaluation of body composition with single-frequency phase-sensitive BI measurements should be included in the routine clinical assessment of COVID-19 patients at hospital admission to identify patients at increased mortality risk.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to calculate the effects of exercise programs on phase angle (PhA) in older people. A systematic review was undertaken in multiple electronic databases in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement guidelines for the purposes of selecting randomized controlled trials that measured the effects of the exercise programs on PhA in older adults on 31 March 2022. We carried out a random-effect meta-analysis for the effects of exercise programs on PhA. Additionally, we analysed the differences between subgroups in terms of weekly frequency, number of sets and repetitions, and duration of interventions. Studies were methodological assessed through the PEDro scale where one had excellent, ten had good, and three had poor methodological quality. For the purposes of the study, fourteen studies met the criteria for inclusion. However, four studies did not have enough information to be included in the quantitative analysis. The remaining ten articles revealed moderate effects on PhA in favour of intervention groups (p=0.009, SMD=0.72 [0.46-0.99], I2=54%). The meta-analysis also showed that interventions lasting twelve weeks are more successful in generating positive effects on PhA as opposed to eight weeks (SMD's=0.79 vs. 0.64, respectively). These results indicate that resistance training (RT) is an effective and safe to improve PhA in the older people, especially through RT programs lasting from eight to twelve weeks. A novel finding of this study was that RT is the most used type of exercise by authors when assessing the PhA in older adults.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare muscle strength and power indicators according to bioimpedance spectroscopy’s phase angle (PhA) values, in resistance-trained (RT) men, while exploring associations between PhA and performance. Forty-four men aged 18−45 years, engaged in RT, were allocated according to PhA tertiles. Lean soft tissue (LST) and fat mass (%FM) were assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; dynamic muscle strength using 1 repetition maximum (1RM) of bench press (BP) and back squat (BS) and muscle power using Wingate test (WT) and countermovement jump (CMJ). For WT and CMJ, the 3rd tertile was significantly higher than the 1st tertile (p = 0.027 and p = 0.018, respectively). Regarding BP 1RM, the 3rd tertile was significantly higher than the 2nd tertile (p = 0.037). LST better explained the variability in the WT, BS and BP (p =< 0.001), while %FM better accounted for jump height in CMJ (p =< 0.001). PhA was a predictor of performance in both CMJ (p = 0.040) and BP (p = 0.012), independently of LST and %FM. Participants with higher PhA also displayed superior muscle strength of the upper limbs and greater muscle power of the lower limbs. PhA displayed significant moderate associations with performance in CMJ and BP, even after controlling for body composition. Still, LST was the most important predictor of muscle strength and power.

Abstract
Introduction. Phase angle (PhA) has been suggested to be an indicator of body cell mass and nutritional status. Clinically, the phase angle supposedly reflects body cell mass and cell membrane function, and the higher the phase angle, the better is the cell function. Muscle ultrasound (US) is an emerging nutritional assessment technique. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness and correlation of PhA with muscle US of quadriceps rectus femoris (QRF) in obese female subjects and the relationship with quality of life and physical performance. Material and Methods. In a total of healthy 50 obese female patients, anthropometric data by BIA, muscle mass by ultrasound at the QRF level, analytical determination, blood pressure, and quality of life were measured. Physical performance was assessed, too. Results. In total, 50 female obese patients were included with a mean age of 45.9 ± 2.4 years. The mean body mass index was 32.1 ± 1.6 kg/m2 with a mean weight of 83.5 ± 14.6 kg. Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation of PhA with all US parameters corrected by squared height (anteroposterior muscle thickness, circumference, cross-sectional area, and Echo-intensity). The correlation analysis of biochemical parameters with PhA showed a positive correlation with serum albumin and total protein levels. Physical activity and vitality scores of SF36 were correlated with PhA. Finally, PhA was positive correlated with physical performance, doing push-ups in 30 seconds (

=0.03) and doing squats in 30 seconds (

=0.02), without correlation with the time of 1.5 km walk. Conclusion. PhA was correlated with muscle area, muscle circumference, muscle echo intensity, serum protein, quality of life SF-36, and strength physical performance.

Abstract
Background Applied research using the phase angle (PhA) in children and adolescents has increased notably. Using multilevel modeling in a fully Bayesian framework, we examined the relationships between PhA, age, sex, biological maturity status, and body size in 10-16-year-old adolescents. Methods The sample comprised 519 adolescents (women, n = 241; men, n = 278) from Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Biological maturity status was assessed with self-examination of pubertal development for sexual maturity and maturity offset protocol to estimate age at peak height velocity (PHV) for somatic maturity status. Stature and body mass were measured by anthropometry. Phase angle was calculated based on raw resistance and reactance values (50 kHz frequency) obtained by bioelectrical impedance with the foot-to-hand technology. Results The multilevel regression analysis revealed that boys had significantly higher values of phase angle than girls, adjusting for age group and sexual maturity status. Overall, older and more mature adolescents had higher values of phase angle. When considering aligning variation in the phase angle by distance to estimated PHV (maturity offset), there was a higher association between the phase angle and time before and after predicted age at PHV for boys (r = 0.31, 90% CI: 0.23 to 0.39) than girls (r = 0.2, 90% CI: 0.11 to 0.28). When including body mass in the multilevel models, corresponding changes in the overall body mass mediate most of the influence of the maturity status and age group on the phase angle. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that the variability in phase angle is related to inter-individual variation in sex, age, and maturity status, as well as differences in body size. Research with adolescents considering phase angle should use multilevel modeling with standardized parameters as default to adjust for the concurrent influence of sex, age, maturity status, and body size.

Abstract
In patients with head and neck cancer, malnutrition is common. Most cases are treated by chemo-radiotherapy and surgery, with adverse effects on the aerodigestive area. Clinical and biochemical characteristics, health-related quality of life, survival, and risk of death were studied. The selected subjects were divided into normal- and low-phase-angle (PA) groups and followed up for at least two years. Mean ages were 67.2 and 59.3 years for low and normal PA, respectively. Patients with PA < 4.42° had significant differences in age, anthropometric and biochemical indicators of malnutrition, and inflammatory status compared to patients with PA > 4.42°. Statistical differences were found in the functional and symptom scales, with lower functional scores and higher symptom scores in patients with low PA. Median survival was 19.8 months for those with PA < 4.42° versus 34.4 months for those with PA > 4.42° (p < 0.001).The relative risk of death was related to low PA (2.6; p < 0.001). The percentage of living patients (41.7%) is almost the same as the percentage of deceased subjects (43.1%; p = 0.002), with high death rates in patients with PA < 4.42°. Phase angle was the most crucial predictor of survival and a risk factor for death in the studied cases.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with the bioimpedance phase angle (PhA) in older patients with prostate cancer, and to determine the optimal cutoff for the PhA in patients with sarcopenia and prostate cancer. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional analysis enrolled patients with prostate cancer aged ≥60 years. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass and PhA estimated by bioimpedance analysis, grip strength, the five-time chair stand test, gait speed, the Short Physical Performance Battery, the 2-min walk test and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form were obtained at enrollment. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was based on the 2019 consensus of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. RESULTS In total, 119 male participants (mean age = 70.7 ± 6.1 years) were available for analysis. A multivariable linear regression model revealed that age, body mass index and the maximal grip strength value were associated with the PhA. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value of the PhA for sarcopenia diagnosis was 0.77 (95% confidence interval 0.64-0.90, P < 0.001), with a PhA cutoff value of 4.87°. CONCLUSIONS PhA estimated by bioimpedance analysis may be utilized as useful clinical biomarker for reflecting muscle strength and sarcopenia in older patients with prostate cancer. Abstract
Background Post-COVID-19 syndrome is characterized by diverse symptoms and abnormalities that persist beyond 12 weeks from the onset of acute COVID-19. Severity disease has been associated with more musculoskeletal alterations such as muscle weakness, dyspnea, and distance walking. The aim was to evaluate the impact of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) on body composition and investigate risk factors associated with sarcopenia in post-COVID-19 patients three months after moderate or severe COVID-19 infections. Methods Cross-sectional study. 530 patients with PCR-confirmed diagnoses of moderate to severe COVID-19, > 18 years old, oxygen saturation ≤ 93%, PaO2/FiO2 ratio < 300, who required hospitalization and were discharged were included. We excluded those who died before the follow-up visit, declined to participate, or could not be contacted. Results The mean age was 53.79 ± 12.90 years. IMV subjects had lower phase angle and handgrip strength and higher impedance index, frequency of low muscle mass, and low muscle strength than those without IMV. The risk factors of sarcopenia were > 60 years of age, diabetes, obesity, IMV, and prolonged hospital stay. The multivariate model showed that age > 60 years (OR: 4.91, 95% CI: 2.26–10.63), obesity (OR: 3.73, 95% CI: 1.21–11.54), and interaction between prolonged length of hospital stay and IMV (OR: 2.92; 95% CI: 1.21–7.02) were related to a higher risk of sarcopenia. Conclusion Obesity and the interaction between prolonged length of hospital stay and IMV are associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia at 3 months after severe or moderate COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
Whether poststroke rehabilitation improves muscle mass and quality along with the recovery of muscle strength is not clear. In this study, we examined the changes in muscle strength, muscle mass, and muscle quality in patients undergoing poststroke rehabilitation and assessed the relationship of these variables with improvement in activities of daily living (ADL). This prospective study was conducted at stroke rehabilitation unit in Japan. Muscle mass and quality were assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). ADLs were assessed using the functional independence measure (FIM). Grip strength of the nonaffected and affected sides was measured using hand dynamometer. All measurements were performed at admission to the stroke rehabilitation unit and at 4 weeks thereafter. We assessed changes in motor FIM items and examined the relationships among the measured variables. This study included 179 patients. Patients received stroke rehabilitation 7 days a week individually. Muscle strength and quality significantly increased after 4 weeks on both the sides. Muscle mass decreased after 4 weeks; however, there was no significant difference between the two time points. Changes in muscle strength and quality showed a significant correlation with improvement in ADLs [r = 0.66 (male), 0.45 (female) and 0.55 (male), 0.31 (female), respectively]; however, muscle mass showed no correlation with improvement in ADLs. Poststroke rehabilitation improves muscle strength and quality, as well as ADLs. Muscle mass is not an appropriate measure to assess the effects of stroke rehabilitation; it is desirable to instead use muscle strength and quality to assess stroke rehabilitation.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a major issue among the elderly. However, the effects of nutritional status and body composition on functional recovery in patients with proximal femur fractures (PFF) remain unclear. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of nutritional status, body composition (skeletal muscle mass and muscle quality measured by phase angle [PhA] values), and muscle strength on the improvement in activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with PFF. We enrolled patients with PFF admitted to a rehabilitation unit. Nutritional status, body composition, grip strength, and motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score were assessed on admission day and at 4 weeks thereafter. Of 148 patients, 84 had femoral neck fractures, and 64 had trochanteric fractures. The mean motor FIM score was 49.2 points at admission and 64.9 points after 4 weeks. In multivariate analysis, higher geriatric nutritional risk index and PhA measured by anthropometry were associated with a significantly higher FIM score after 4 weeks. Muscle strength and quality changes significantly correlated with ADL improvement. Poor nutritional status and decreased muscle strength and quality interfered with ADL recovery. Abstract
Sarcopenia is a common finding in patients with cancer and potentially influences the patient’s outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia, according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People, in a sample of women with breast cancer (BC) and a BMI lower than 30 kg/m2. This cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with BC, stage 0-III, and receiving therapy for BC; the women were recruited at the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Federico II University, Naples, Italy. A control group with similar age and BMI was selected from the internal database. Anthropometry, bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and hand grip strength (HGS) were measured to detect sarcopenia. A total of 122 patients (mean age 49.3 ± 11.0 years, BMI 24.6 ± 3.0 kg/m2) and 80 healthy controls were analyzed. Sarcopenia was found in 13.9% patients with BC, while none of the subjects in the control group was sarcopenic. By comparing BC patients with and without sarcopenia and the control group, the fat-free mass of sarcopenic BC patients were significantly lower than those of both non-sarcopenic BC patients and the control (p < 0.05). The phase angle was also significantly lower in sarcopenic patients (−0.5 degrees, p = 0.048) than in the control group. Considering the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with BC, our findings suggest the usefulness of body composition and HGS evaluation for early screening of sarcopenia to reduce the risk of associated complications.

Phase Angle Is a Stronger Predictor of Hospital Outcome than Subjective Global Assessment-Results from the Prospective Dessau Hospital Malnutrition Study. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14091780. Abstract
This prospective cohort study of 16,943 consecutive patients compared phase angle (PhA, foot-to-hand at 50 kHz) and subjective global assessment (SGA) to predict outcomes length of hospital stay (LOS) and in-hospital mortality in patients at risk of malnutrition (NRS-2002 ≥ 3). In 1505 patients, the independent effects on LOS were determined by competing risk analysis and on mortality by logistic regression. In model I, including influence factors age, sex, BMI, and diagnoses, malnourished (SGA B and C) patients had a lower chance for a regular discharge (HR 0.74; 95%CI 0.69−0.79) and an increased risk of mortality (OR 2.87; 95%CI 1.38−5.94). The association of SGA and outcomes regular discharge and mortality was completely abrogated when PhA was added (model II). Low PhA reduced the chance of a regular discharge by 53% in patients with a PhA ≤ 3° (HR 0.47; 95%CI 0.39−0.56) as compared to PhA > 5°. Mortality was reduced by 56% for each 1° of PhA (OR 0.44; 95%CI 0.32−0.61). Even when CRP was added in model III, PhA ≤ 3° was associated with a 41% lower chance for a regular discharge (HR 0.59; 95%CI 0.48−0.72). In patients at risk of malnutrition, the objective measure PhA was a stronger predictor of LOS and mortality than SGA.

Abstract
Simple Summary Breast cancer (BC) patients suffer from loss of muscle tissue and fluid alterations during the whole trajectory of the disease. Such alterations might be reflected by phase angle (PhA) measures, but its use in the oncologic setting is still limited. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to assess PhA in BC patients, since it has been proven to be a reliable index for predicting nutritional status and survival. Findings reveal that PhA decreases after chemotherapy in BC patients, with high results in women with a better nutritional status, and these changes may persist even after five years. However, PhA remains stable, or can increase in some cases, when patients are supported by targeted lifestyle interventions. Thus, PhA can be useful to identify and monitor changes in body compartments and the nutritional status of BC patients over time. Abstract Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer diagnosed among women worldwide. Phase angle (PhA), a proxy measure of membrane integrity and function, has gained relevance in clinical practice and it has been suggested to be a prognostic and nutritional indicator. This systematic review aimed to explore PhA and its relationship with nutritional status and survival in BC patients. Four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CINAHL) were systematically searched until September 2021 for studies evaluating PhA in BC patients. A total of 16 studies met the inclusion criteria, where 11 were observational studies and 5 were interventional studies. Baseline PhA-value varied from 4.9 to 6.30 degrees, showing a great variability and heterogeneity across the selected studies. Available data suggested that PhA decreased by 5–15% after completing chemotherapy, and those effects might persist in the long term. However, the use of tailored nutritional and/or exercise programs during and after therapy could prevent PhA reduction and body derangement. High PhA values were found in women displaying a better nutritional status, while inconsistent data were found on survival. Therefore, further studies are needed to focus on the clinical relevance of PhA in BC patients, evaluating its association with disease outcomes and survival.

Abstract
Background Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive and irreversible airflow limitation. Different factors that modify pulmonary function include age, sex, muscular strength, and a history of exposure to toxic agents. However, the impact of body composition compartments and sarcopenia on pulmonary function is not well-established. This study aimed to evaluate how body composition compartments and sarcopenia affect pulmonary function in COPD patients. Methods In a cross-sectional study, patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD, > 40 years old, and forced expiratory volume in the first second /forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1/FVC) < 0.70 post-bronchodilator were included. Patients with cancer, HIV, and asthma were excluded. Body composition was measured with bioelectrical impedance. Sarcopenia was defined according to EWGSOP2, and pulmonary function was assessed by spirometry. Results 185 patients were studied. The mean age was 72.20 ± 8.39 years; 55.14% were men. A linear regression adjusted model showed associations between body mass index, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass index, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, and phase angle (PhA), and sarcopenia with FEV1 (%). As regards FVC (%), PhA and exercise tolerance had positive associations. Conclusion Body composition, especially PhA, SMMI, ASMMI, and sarcopenia, has a significant impact on pulmonary function. Early detection of disturbances of these indexes enables the early application of such therapeutic strategies in COPD patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Phase angle (PhA) determined by bioelectrical impedance (BIA) is related to body fluid balance and cell membrane integrity. Handgrip strength (HGS) is used to assess muscle strength and as an indicator of health. We aimed to determine the relationship between PhA and HGS in healthy young males and to verify whether this relationship is dependent on body components. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hundred and sixty-three healthy male army cadets (18.8 ± 0.6 years old) participated in the study. PhA was determined by BIA, HGS was assessed by a hydraulic dynamometer, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry determined: fat mass (FM), bone mineral content (BMC), and lean soft tissue (LST). Participants were divided according to the PhA tertile (first tertile: PhA < 7.14°, second tertile: 7.14° ≤ PhA < 7.83°, and third tertile: PhA ≥ 7.83°). RESULTS Youth from the first tertile of PhA had lower BMC (2.8 kg vs. 3.0 kg and vs. 3.1 kg) and LST (51.7 vs. 53.8 kg and vs. 57.6 kg) compared to youth from the second and third tertile of PhA (P < .001), respectively. Additionally, lower HGS (83.0 kg vs. 93.1 kg) was found in the first tertile compared to the third tertile of PhA (P < .001). PhA explained 3% of the HGS variation (R2 = 0.029), while LST and BMC explained 39% (R2 = 0.385) and 22% (R2 = 0.221), respectively. Furthermore, the correlation between PhA and HGS was dependent on LST (P = .567) and BMC (P = .182). CONCLUSION In this sample, PhA showed a small relationship with HGS, remaining dependent on BMC and LST values. These results reinforce the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle with great lean mass and muscle strength values.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at assessing the effect of chemotherapy on dietary intake and nutritional status of patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS Observational, cross-sectional study conducted with 35 patients of both sexes, aged 50 years or older. Dietary intake was assessed four times: before (T0), twice during (T1 and T2), and after (TF) chemotherapy. Data on energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients were used for assessing dietary intake. Nutritional status was assessed on the first day and at the end of the chemotherapy cycle. The data were treated statistically using a 5% significance level. RESULTS The intake of energy, carbohydrates, lipids, selenium, and iron was lower after chemotherapy infusion (p < 0.05). Energy consumption decreased when comparing T0 (1419.8 ± 527.1 kcal) with T1 (1181.9 ± 423.2 kcal). Regarding macronutrients, carbohydrates and lipids showed a drop (p < 0.05), but there were no differences in protein intake, and it was observed that the consumption of food sources such as dairy was prioritized. In the analysis of vitamins and minerals, vitamins dropped but without a significant difference. There were significant differences between T1 and TF for iron (9.7 mg ± 4.5 mg and 12.0 ± 4.0 mg) and selenium (77.4 ± 29.7 µg and 93.6 ± 37.8 µg). There was no change in body composition and nutritional status between chemotherapy cycles. CONCLUSION The treatment reduced patients' food consumption after the chemotherapy session and impacted dietary intake, which demonstrates the importance of nutritional counseling and intervention, especially on energy consumption.

Background and purpose
Breast cancer can be a major challenge for affected women. Knowledge of the physical function, symptoms of cancer-related fatigue, anxiety, and depression based on the cancer treatment may help to guide adequate support. Methods For this prospective observational study, we collected data from seventy-nine women with a mean age 54.6 ± 9.5 years prior to the onset of breast cancer treatment (T0) and after (T1/T2). Handgrip strength test (HGS), six-minute walk test (6MWT), the phase angle (PhA), the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and functional assessment of chronic illness therapy-fatigue (FACIT-F) were used to collect data from four treatment subgroups SC, surgery + chemotherapy; SCR, surgery + chemotherapy + radiation therapy; SR, surgery + radiation therapy; and S, surgery. Results A mixed ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between time and group for PhA, F = 8.55, p < 0.01; HGS, F = 3.59, p < 0.01; 6MWT, F = 4.47, p < 0.01; and FACIT-F, F = 2.77, p < 0.05 with most pronounced deterioration seen in group SCR (PhA 4.8°; HGS 27.5 kg, 6MWT 453.4 m, FACIT-F 33.8 points). HADS data displayed moderate anxiety and depression predominantly after treatment. Conclusion Our study showed that the extent of change in physical function, symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, and depression depends on the treatment conditions. The potentially higher risk of impaired function due to the prevalence of values below a critical threshold requires early initiated multidisciplinary support.
