Abstract
A fundamental challenge in artificial superhydrophobic papers is their poor resistance to mechanical abrasion, which limits their practical application in different fields. Herein, a robust and multifunctional superhydrophobic paper is successfully fabricated via a facile spraying method by combining silver nanowires and fluorinated titania nanoparticles through a common paper sizing agent (alkyl ketene dimer) onto paper. It is shown that the surface of the paper-based material presents a three-dimensional network structure due to the cross-linking of silver nanowires with a high aspect ratio. Further hydrophilic and hydrophobic performance test results show that it exhibits exceptional water repellency, with a desirable static contact angle of 165° and roll-off angle of 6.2°. The superhydrophobic paper showcases excellent mechanical durability and maintains its superhydrophobicity even after enduring 130 linear sandpaper abrasion cycles or high-velocity water jetting impact benefited from interfacial van der Waals and hydrogen bonding. Simultaneously, the robust superhydrophobic surface can effectively prevent the penetration of acid or alkali solutions, as well as UV light, resulting in excellent chemical stability. Additionally, the superhydrophobic paper offers supplementary features such as self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, and antibacterial capability. Further development of this strategy paves a way toward next-generation superhydrophobic paper composed of nanostructures and characterized by multiple (or additional) functionalities.

Abstract
Porous fibers as excellent carriers can be used to prepare photoluminescence materials. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were derived from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. After CNCs were squeezed into a coagulating bath containing silicon precursors obtained by the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate, porous cellulose fibers were constructed through self-assembly and then incorporated with graphene carbon quantum dots (GQDs) to prepare porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers. The silicon precursor amount, self-assembly time, and corrosion time were optimized. In addition, the morphology, structure and optical properties of the products were investigated. These results showed that as-prepared porous cellulose fibers with mesopores presented loose and porous mesh. Interestingly, the porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers exhibited blue fluorescence, and the maximum emission peak appeared at 430 nm under the excitation wavelength of 350 nm. Furthermore, the relative fluorescence intensity of the porous photoluminescence cellulose fibers was significantly enhanced compared with nonporous photoluminescence cellulose fibers. This work provided a new method to prepare environmentally and stably photoluminescence fibers, which had potential applications in anti-counterfeit packaging and smart packaging.

Abstract
The practical application of photocatalytic coating has been greatly challenged in terms of its long-term effective natural light photocatalytic degradation due to its vulnerability and easy contamination caused by poor self-cleaning properties. In this work, photocatalytic coating with self-cleaning properties was prepared by spraying fluorinated dual-scale TiO2 on the inorganic lithium silicate adhesive, enabling excellent durability and long-term effective photocatalytic degradation performance under natural light. The coating exhibits superhydrophobic properties even after abrasion testing, acid and alkali immersion testing, and UV aging, laying a foundation for the practical use. Moreover, the coating can be applied to various substrates and its excellent self-cleaning properties make it resistant to particulate and liquid contamination that may occur in the environment. Besides, we evaluated the photocatalytic stability of the coating by subjecting it to acidic and alkaline environments and high pollution concentrations. Furthermore, benefiting from the synergistic effect of photocatalytic and self-cleaning properties, the coating achieves long-term effective photocatalytic degradation of dye wastewater under natural light, which still has a high removal rate of 95.8% for methylene blue even after 30 cycles of use. Meanwhile, due to the coating's excellent durability, the long-term quality loss rate of the coating still remained below 0.3%, which avoids the risk of secondary environmental pollution caused by nanoparticle leakage. Therefore, these excellent properties enable the coating to have a broad range of application prospects for the treatment of pollutants in water.

Abstract
With increasing awareness about the ecological environment, increased attention has been paid to the application of eco-friendly materials in the field of marine antifouling. In this work, a novel coating having good mechanical strength and static marine antifouling characteristics was fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the skeleton material, with in situ growth of SiO2 as the basic superhydrophobic material and introducing hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 4-bromo2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile (Econea) into the coating. Due to the high strength and rod structure of CNCs, the coating maintained super-hydrophobicity after 50 cycles of abrasion tests. Moreover, the addition of CTAB during the synthesis of SiO2 led to the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate at the micellar interface. Econea was fully mixed with SiO2 nanoparticles, thus slowing down the rate of release of Econea. Meanwhile, the adhesion between the coating and the substrate reached 1.9 MPa, which can meet the application requirements for marine environments. The bioassay using bacteria (Escherichia coli) and diatoms (Nitzschia closterium) showed that the rate of inhibition of the coating on bacteria and diatoms could reach 99 and 90%, respectively, after immersion in artificial seawater for 28 days. This research provides a facile and promising fabricating solution of an eco-friendly CNC-based coating having strong antifouling characteristics suitable for marine environments.

Abstract
Construction of superhydrophobic woods with high abrasion resistance is still a major challenge, and micro analysis for abrasion resistance is scarce. To improve these issues, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)@SiO2@phosphorylated lignin (PL) rods were prepared by SiO2 in situ generated on CNC, and then the modified lignin attached to the CNC@SiO2 rods surface. Subsequently, the superhydrophobic coating was constructed using hydrophobic modified CNC@SiO2@PL rods as the main structural substance by simple spraying or rolling them onto wood surfaces, and both polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy resin were used as the adhesives. The resulting coating had excellent superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle (WCA) of 157.4° and a slide angle (SA) of 6°. The introduced PL could enhance ultraviolet (UV) resistance of the coating due to the presence of these groups that absorbed UV light in lignin. In the abrasion resistance test, compared with the SiO2/PL coating, the abrasion resistance of the one with CNC was much higher, suggesting that CNC could improve the abrasion resistance of the coating due to its high crystallinity and excellent mechanical strength. The coating with PDMS performed better than the one with epoxy resin because the soft surface could offset part of the external impact by deformation in the abrasion process. This was also consistent with the results of the nanoindentation (NI) tests. In view of the simple preparation and good performance, this superhydrophobic wood will have broad application potential.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), with a long chain length and high poly(4-hydroxybutyric acid) (P4HB) ratio, can be used as a base polymer for eco-friendly and biodegradable adhesives owing to its high elasticity, elongation at break, flexibility, and processability; however, its molecular structures must be adjusted for adhesive applications. In this study, surface-modified cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as a hydrophobic additive for the PHA-based adhesive. For the surface modification of CNFs, double silanization using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was performed, and the thermal and structural properties were evaluated. The hydrophobicity of the TEOS- and MTMS-treated CNFs (TMCNFs) was confirmed by FT-IR and water contact angle analysis, with hydrophobic CNFs well dispersed in the PHA. The PHA-CNFs composite was prepared with TMCNFs, and its morphological analysis verified the good dispersion of TMCNFs in the PHA. The tensile strength of the composite was enhanced when 10% TMCNFs were added; however, the viscosity decreased as the TMCNFs acted as a thixotropic agent. Adding TMCNFs to PHA enhanced the flowability and infiltration ability of the PHA-TMCNFs-based adhesive, and an increase in the loss tangent (Tan δ) and adjustment of viscosity without reducing the adhesive strength was also observed. These changes in properties can improve the flowability and dispersibility of the PHA-TMCNFs adhesive on a rough adhesive surface at low stress. Thus, it is expected that double-silanized CNFs effectively improve their interfacial adhesion in PHA and the adhesive properties of the PHA-CNFs composites, which can be utilized for more suitable adhesive applications.

Abstract
Green and sustainable cellulose-based hydrophobic coatings are increasingly the subject of scientific and industrial research. However, few researchers pay attention to preparing it by a one-step method. Therefore, a superhydrophobic coating composed of hydrophobic SiO2 and cellulose nanofiber modified by 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate was manufactured through one-step ball milling. It was found that the ball milling can promote SiO2 dispersion and achieve the preparation of modified nanocellulose, which further disperse SiO2 nanoparticles to form film or coating. Compared with the ultrasonic dispersion method, the composite coating prepared by ball milling method can obtain higher water contact angle and more stable hydrophobic properties. The hydrophobic cellulose nanofiber can load 1.5 equivalents of SiO2 nanoparticles to form a uniform film with the water contact angle of 158.0° and low moisture absorption. When this nanocomposite is used as a coating material, it can impart super-hydrophobicity to paper surface with water contact angle of 155.8°. This work provides a facile way to prepare superhydrophobic nanocellulose/nanoparticles composite coatings and films, thereby broadening the ways of dispersing nanoparticles and constructing superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract
On account of their wide range of applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, frost suppression, etc., superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted considerate attention. However, most of the superhydrophobic surfaces can only be prepared on the surfaces of specific materials and are easily damaged in the case of friction. In this work, we propose a facile method to achieve superhydrophobicity on various substrate surfaces. By femtosecond laser direct processing, micron-level grooves and protrusions are constructed on substrates to form a protective layer. Then, the substrates covered by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were scanned to make the surfaces of the substrates superhydrophobic. Since the PTFE micro-nano-particles are evenly distributed on the grooves and protrusions, the surfaces exhibit robust superhydrophobicity with excellent anti-friction performance that is independent of the substrate properties. This work provides an efficient and environmentally friendly path for achieving robust superhydrophobic surfaces on various substrates.

Abstract
Film and sheet products made from naturally derived materials that exhibit high-performance surface functions are important as regards the environment. This study aimed to control the surface structure of a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) film modified using methyltriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane coprecursors with environmentally friendly solvents (water and ethanol) during a spin-coating process. The surface-modified CNC film on the glass substrate was evaluated by microstructure analyses (Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) and water contact angle (hydrophobicity) measurements. Through FT-IR, NMR, and XPS, it was confirmed that the silane compounds were chemically bonded to the surface of the CNC. The AFM images suggested that the local surface structure of the silylation-modified CNC film was formed along with the rod-like shape of the CNC. The water contact angle was approximately 90°, owing to the silylation of the hydroxy group and increased surface roughness of the CNC layer enabled by the sol-gel reaction.

Abstract
In this study, we fabricated high-performance polyethylene composites by constructing SiO2@silane coupling agent (γ-methylacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane) and SiO2@polydopamine (PDA) double-layer structures on a magnesium oxysulfate whisker surface. In addition to realizing strong mechanical properties, the flame-retardant properties of the composites were effectively improved. Further increase in the initial crystallization temperature of the modified composites indicated that the dispersion of whisker in the matrix was improved. The drag effect of the modified whisker on the HDPE molecular chain was characterized by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and the morphology of the impact-fractured surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); both confirmed the improved compatibility between the whisker and the matrix. The tensile strength of HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@PDA composites were 22.6% and 41.5% higher than that of the HDPE/MOSw composites, respectively. The impact strengths of the HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@PDA composites were 129% and 102% higher than that of the HDPE/MOSw composites, respectively. A stable carbon-silicate layer constructed by a SiO2@KH570 and SiO2@PDA double-layer structure delayed the combustion process. As a result, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO2@PDA composites increased from 22.5 to 22.9 and 23.5, respectively.

Abstract
Lignin is an ideal substance for preparation of functional materials. Specifically, lignin nanospheres (LNPs) are formed by self-assembly of lignin molecules and show great application prospects in drug delivery, electrochemistry, catalysis, etc. At present, most superhydrophobic surfaces are mainly built using non-degradable inorganic particles and are still beset by defects such as poor environmental performance, easy aging, and low mechanical strength. In this study, an aqueous mixture containing LNPs, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was sprayed onto wood surfaces and then modified by 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FOTS) to obtain a superhydrophobic surface. In the superhydrophobic surface, LNPs were used as the main structural materials instead of inorganic particles, CNC was used as a reinforcement material and PVA was used as an adhesive. The resulting superhydrophobic surface showed a water contact angle (WCA) of 162°, good robustness resistance and long UV resistance in which the superhydrophobicity was still retained after exposure to ultra-high UV light (power of 1000 W) for 7 h, providing more directions for high-value application of lignin.

Abstract
Mechanically robust superhydrophobic coatings have been extensively reported using chemically susceptible inorganic fillers like SiO2, TiO2, ZnO, etc. for constructing micro-nano structures. Organic particles are good candidates for improving chemical resistance, whereas the synthesis of organic particles with well-defined and stable micro-nano structures remains exclusive. Here, an all-organic, cross-linked superhydrophobic coating comprising raspberry-like fluorinated micro particles (RLFMP) and fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) was prepared via thiol-click reaction. Benefiting from the robust micro-nano structure of RLFMP and the excellent flexibility of FPU, the coating could maintain superhydrophobic after severe alkali corrosion or mechanical damage, while the superhydrophobicity could be repaired readily by the fast recovery of micro-nano roughness and migration of branched fluoroalkyl chains to the coating surface. Our design strategy is expected to provide a good application of thiol-click chemistry. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
Cotton fabric, as an important material, is suffering from some defects such as flammability, easy pollution and so on; therefore, it is important to make a flame-retardant and superhydrophobic modification on cotton fabric. In this study, we demonstrated a preparation of high-efficiency flame-retardant and superhydrophobic cotton fabric with double coated construction by a simple multi-step dipping. First, the fabric was immersed in branched poly(ethylenimine) (BPEI) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) water dispersions successively, and then immersed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)-SiO2 toluene dispersion to form a BPEI/APP/PDMS/CNC-SiO2 (BAPC) composite coating on the surface of the cotton fabric. Here, the hydrophobic modified CNC-SiO2 rods were used to construct the superhydrophobic layer and the BPEI/APP mixture was used as the flame-retardant layer, as well as SiO2 particles which could further improve the flame-retardant effect. PDMS was mainly used as an adhesive between the BPEI/APP layer and the CNC-SiO2 layer. The resulting cotton fabric shows outstanding flame-retardant properties, in that the value of oxygen index meter (LOI) reaches 69.8, as well as excellent superhydrophobicity, in that the water contact angle (WCA) is up to 156.6°. Meanwhile, there is a good abrasion resistance, the superhydrophobicity is not lost until the 16th abrasion cycles and the flame retardant retains well, even after 100 abrasion cycles in an automatic vertical flammability cabinet under a pressure of 8.8 kPa.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a biodegradable plastic with great potential for tackling plastic waste and marine pollution issues, but its commercial applications have been limited due to its poor processability. In this study, surface-modified cellulose nanocrystals were used to improve the mechanical properties of PHA composites produced via a melt-extrusion process. Double silanization was conducted to obtain hydrophobically treated CNC-based fillers, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). The morphology, particle size distributions, and surface characteristics of the silanized CNCs and their compatibility with a PHA polymer matrix differed by the organosiloxane treatment and drying method. It was confirmed that the double silanized CNCs had hydrophobic surface characteristics and narrow particle size distributions, and thereby showed excellent dispersibility in a PHA matrix. Adding hydrophobically treated CNCs to form a PHA composite, the elongation at break of the PHA composites was improved up to 301%, with little reduction of Young's modulus, compared to pure PHA. Seemingly, the double silanized CNCs added played a similar role to a nucleation agent in the PHA composite. It is expected that such high ductility can improve the mechanical properties of PHA composites, making them more suitable for commercial applications.

Abstract
A superhydrophobic stainless steel mesh (called "mesh" in short) is an ideal device to solve oil pollution accidents by oil-water separation. However, its widespread application is prevented by complicated preparation, weak durability, and particularly poor mechanical strength. It is well known that the used adhesives play a key role in the mechanical strength of superhydrophobic coatings. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs) were respectively used as adhesives and lignin-nanocellulose crystal (L-CNC) particles as main structure materials to prepare L-CNC coated superhydrophobic meshes. Moreover, the meshes coated with L-CNC/PVDF and L-CNC/PDMS were compared with respect to the properties of wettability, sandpaper abrasion, oil-water separation, etc. The results showed that the L-CNC/PVDF-coated mesh had a higher water contact angle (WCA = 154.2°) than the L-CNC/PDMS-coated one (WCA = 152.6°), but worse abrasion resistance. Both of them showed high-efficiency oil/water separation with collection rates above 94.5% and stable reusable ability as the oil collection rates for toluene was still above 93.8% after reusing thirty times, meanwhile showing good heat, UV, acid and alkaline resistance properties.

Abstract
There has been a recent drive to develop non-fluorinated superhydrophobic coatings due to the toxicity, cost, and environmental impact of perfluorinated components. One of the main challenges in developing superhydrophobic coatings in general and non-fluorinated superhydrophobic coatings in particular is optimization of mechanical durability, as the rough asperities required for maintaining superhydrophobicity tend to be easily removed by abrasion. Although rough and self-similar hydrophobic surfaces composed of loosely adhered particles or highly porous structures tend to produce excellent superhydrophobicity, they have low inherent mechanical durability and their longevity under real conditions is compromised. To address this issue, this work investigates the addition of a polymeric matrix material (the binder) to hydrophobic nanoparticles (the filler) to produce spray-coated superhydrophobic surfaces with improved inherent mechanical durability. Hansen solubility parameters were used to tune the interactions between the binder, filler, and solvent used to deliver the coating. It was found that lowering the binder/filler miscibility and using a poor solvent mixture generates more surface roughness, thereby lowering the minimum filler load required to achieve superhydrophobicity. This leads to an overall more inherently durable system that remains hydrophobic for thousands of light abrasion cycles.

Abstract
In this work, polyurethane/fluorinated acrylic co-polymer/silicon dioxide (PU/FAP/SiO2) hybrid superhydrophobic coatings were fabricated on glass substrates via a simple one-step coating process. The effects of each coating component on the coating properties were systematically investigated. The optimized coating exhibits a water contact angle (WCA) of 159° and a rolling angle of 3°. Meanwhile, the coating has an optical light transmittance of 88%, indicating the good transparency of the coating. Besides, the coating demonstrates an adequate level of abrasion resistance. After a total abrasion distance of 300 cm against a piece of 800 mesh sand paper, the sample still kept a water contact angle of about 110°, showing its high abrasion resistance. Therefore, the optimized coating has a great potential for practical application.

Abstract
With the development of human society, the requirements for building materials are becoming higher. The development of polymer materials and their application in the field of architecture have greatly enhanced and broadened the functions of building materials. With the development of material science and technology, many functional materials have been developed. Polymer materials have many excellent properties compared with inorganic materials, and they can also be improved to enhance functional properties by blending or adding various additives (such as flame retardants, antistatic agents, and antioxidants). In this paper, polymer-based building materials are introduced with three classes according to the applications, that is, substrates, coatings, and binders, and their recent signs of progress in the preparations and applications are carefully demonstrated.

Abstract
Complex preparation methods and weak mechanical properties of superhydrophobic coatings hinder their applicability. To address these problems, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as structural materials to augment the roughness properties, while polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as the adhesive. Based on the results of previous studies, superhydrophobic coatings with good mechanical properties can be prepared by spraying the mixture onto a substrate surface; herein, the mixture comprised modified CNFs and PDMS. The resulting coating possessed excellent superhydrophobicity, which allowed a maximum water contact angle (WCA) of 158°. Furthermore, it exhibited great knife-scratch-resistance properties and good abrasion performance, which was evaluated by abrading with 800-grit sandpaper for 19 cycles (abrasion length of 380 cm) under a 100 g load. Based on the simple operation and abrasion resistance, the coating shows great potential for practical application.

Abstract
Lots of beetles, moths, and birds in the natural world present stunning unique structural colors as well as excellent hydrophobic performances. Herein, a novel bioinspired variable structural-color film with organic-solvent responsiveness and surface hydrophobicity was fabricated. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) provided structural color with left-handed helicity. PEG-PPG-PEG triblock copolymers (PPPTCs) were blended with CNCs, giving rise to the organic-solvent-responsive structural color and wider red-shift window of the reflectance peak. The color of the film could be regulated repeatedly under the stimulus of cyclohexanone with an obvious red shift up to 107 nm, corresponding to a macroscopic color change from blue to yellow. Low-surface-energy compound hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) was covalently grafted on the surface in a one-step method to introduce hydrophobicity, successfully preventing the effect of water on the ordered nanostructure. Based on the bionics principle, the as-prepared CNC/PPPTC nanocomposite films with variable structural colors and hydrophobicity are beneficial to their prospective applications in display screens, rewritable hydrophobic structural-color-changing paper, biomimetic sensors, and so forth.

Abstract
Since its invention invented in China, paper has been widely used in the world for quite a long time. However, some intrinsic defects servely hinder its application in some extreme conditions, such as underwater or in fire. Herein, a bio-inspired durable paper with robust fluorine-free coatings was fabricated via a two-step spray-deposition technique. It not only consisted of modified SiO2 microspheres and nanoparticles, but also contained an epoxy resin, endowing the paper with multifunctional properties. First, this bio-inspired functional paper showed excellent superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties with a high static water contact angle (WCA) of 162.7 ± 0.5° and a low sliding angle (SA) of 5.7 ± 0.6°. Moreover, it possessed unusual repellent properties toward multiple aqueous-based liquids and heat-insulated properties. Second, this paper could be used for writing underwater and maintained satisfactory superhydrophobic performance for a long time with a WCA of 153.3 ± 1.8°. Besides, its high mechanical robustness was also experimentally confirmed in harsh working conditions, such as strong acid/alkali, boiling water, abrasion, bending, and folding. Compared with conventional paper, it is anticipated that this bio-inspired functional paper would be really competitive and demonstrate great potential in the field of underwater and fire-proof applications.

Abstract
Mechanical robustness is a central concern for moving artificial superhydrophobic surfaces to application practices. It is believed that bulk hydrophilic materials cannot be use to construct micro/nanoarchitectures for superhydrophobicity since abrasion-induced exposure of hydrophilic surfaces leads to remarkable degradation of water repellency. To address this challenge, the robust mechanical durability of a superhydrophobic surface with metal (hydrophilic) textures, through scalable construction of a flexible coral-reef-like hierarchical architecture on various substrates including metals, glasses, and ceramics, is demonstrated. Discontinuous coral-reef-like Cu architecture is built by solid-state spraying commercial electrolytic Cu particles (15-65 µm) at supersonic particle velocities. Subsequent flame oxidation is applied to introduce a porous hard surface oxide layer. Owing to the unique combination of the flexible coral-reef-like architecture and self-similar manner of the fluorinated hard oxide surface layer, the coating surface retains its water repellency with an extremely low roll-off angle (<2°) after cyclic sand-paper abrasion, mechanical bending, sand-grit erosion, knife-scratching, and heavy loading of simulated acid rain droplets. Strong adhesion to glass, ceramics, and metals up to 34 MPa can be achieved without using adhesive. The results show that the present superhydrophobic coating can have wide outdoor applications for self-cleaning and corrosion protection of metal parts.
