Lignin-derived iron carbide/Mn, N, S-codoped carbon nanotubes as a high-efficiency catalyst for synergistically enhanced oxygen reduction reaction and rechargeable zinc-air battery

Modulation in work function of CoTe as bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc air battery

The sluggish kinetics and inferior stability of oxygen electrocatalyst in rechargeable zinc air battery (ZAB) hamper its industrialization. In this work, we activate cobalt telluride (CoTe) by introduction of metallic cobalt (Co) to modulate the work function to facilitate the electron transfer from Co to CoTe during oxygen catalysis; additionally, the three-dimensional porous carbon nanosheets (3DPC) are invited to reduce the resistance towards electrolyte/oxygen diffusion. Thereby, Co-CoTe@3DPC only demands 280 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 under alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) condition, relatively lower than commercial iridium oxides (IrO2); besides, the operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicates a better resistance towards surface reconstruction than Co@3DPC leading to a superior stability. A Pt-like oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance, half-wave potential associated with kinetic current density, is achieved for Co-CoTe@3DPC. A maximum power density of 203 mW cm-2 is achieved and sustains for 800 h. Furthermore, the all-solid-state ZAB offers 97 mW cm-2. Theoretical calculation suggests that the incorporation of metallic Co to CoTe maintains the superb ORR activity and promotes the OER catalysis.

In-situ construction of iron-modified nickel nanoparticles assisted by hexamethylenetetramine with the internal and external collaboration for highly selective electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction

Carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction provides a sustainable route for realizing carbon neutrality and energy supply. Up to now, challenges remain in employing abundant and inexpensive nickel materials as candidates for CO2 reduction due to their low activity and favorable hydrogen evolution. Here, the representative iron-modified nickel nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni1-Fe0.125-NC) with the porous botryoid morphology were successfully developed. Hexamethylenetetramine is used as nitrogen-doped carbon source. The collaboration of internal lattice expansion with electron effect and external confinement effect with size effect endows the significant enhancement in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. The optimized Ni1-Fe0.125-NC exhibits broad potential ranges for continuous carbon monoxide (CO) production. A superb CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 85.0 % realized at -1.1 V maintains a longtime durability over 35 h, which exceeds many state-of-the-art metal catalysts. Theoretical calculations further confirm that electron redistribution promotes the desorption of CO in the process for favorable CO production. This work opens a new avenue to design efficient nickel-based materials by considering the intrinsic structure and external confinement for CO2 reduction.

Iodine intercalation-assisted alkali activation constructs coal-based porous carbon for high-performance supercapacitors

Supercapacitors have the advantages of fast charging and discharging speeds, high power density, long cycle life, and wide operating temperature range. They are widely used in portable electronic equipment, rail transit, industry, military, aerospace, and other fields. The design and preparation of low-cost, high-performance electrode materials still pose a bottleneck that hinders the development of supercapacitors. In this paper, coal was used as the raw material, and the coal-based porous carbon electrode material was constructed using the iodine intercalation-assisted activation method and used for supercapacitors. The CK-700 electrode exhibits excellent charge storage performance in a 6 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte, with a maximum specific capacitance of 350 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g. In addition, it has an excellent rate performance (310 F/g at 1 A/g) and cycle stability (capacitance retention up to 91.7 % after 30000 cycles). This work provides a method for realizing high-quality, high-yield and low-cost preparation of coal-based porous carbon, and an idea for improving the performance of supercapacitors.

Low Rh doping accelerated HER/OER bifunctional catalytic activities of nanoflower-like Ni-Co sulfide for greatly boosting overall water splitting

Facile synthesis of high-efficiency and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst is essential for producing clean hydrogen in energy storage systems. Herein, low Rh-doped flower-like Ni3S2/Co3S4 heterostructures were facilely prepared on porous nickel foam (labeled Rh-Ni3S2/Co3S4/NF) by a hydrothermal method. The correlation of the precursors types with the morphological structures and catalytic properties were rigorously investigated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the control groups. The low Rh doping within the catalyst played important role in boosting the catalytic characteristics. The resulting catalyst showed the smaller overpotentials of 197 and 78 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the OER and HER in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. And the potential only required 1.71 V to drive a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in a water splitting device. It reflects excellent overall water splitting of the home-made Rh-Ni3S2/Co3S4/NF. This strategy shed some constructive light for preparing transition metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts in water splitting devices.

Room temperature synthesis of 3D-nanocrystalline graphitic carbon from biomass-derived sugars, alcohols, and polyphenolic compounds

Nanocrystalline carbon materials exhibit promising potential for sustainable and high-performance applications in electronics, energy storage, and environmental technologies. While sugars are abundant and renewable, converting them to graphitic carbon usually requires high temperature treatment. Here, we present a groundbreaking approach for synthesizing nanocrystalline carbon from readily available sugars such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose at ambient pressure and temperature. This novel method involves electrochemical reduction on a negatively charged Ag surface coupled with intermolecular dehydration between the organic precursors. By applying relatively low potentials ranging from -1.2 to -1.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and with the presence of hydrogen peroxide, oxygenic carbon precursors are efficiently transformed into nanocrystalline hybrid carbon structures. The role of hydrogen peroxide is pivotal in expediting hydrogen abstraction and facilitating the formation of 3D-nanostructured carbon allotropes. Characterization results based on Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-selected area electron diffraction (TEM-EDX-SAED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and grazing incidence-X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) confirm the presence of mixed nanocrystalline sp2-sp3 hybridization in the resulting carbon materials. Moreover, this method's versatility extends beyond sugars to include alcohols, polyols, and polyphenolic compounds like ethanol, glycerol, and tannic acid, broadening its potential for biomass valorization.

Preparation of cathode catalysts for efficient direct lignin fuel cells by nitrogen doping reduction of oxidized graphene with phthalocyanine iron and Kraft lignin

Direct lignin fuel cells (DLFC) are one of the important forms of high value-added utilization of lignin. In this study, lignin was studied not only as a fuel but also as a catalyst. Specifically, Kraft lignin was modified with ZnCl2, KOH and THF (Tetrahydrofuran) respectively, and added to the catalyst after activation. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer - Emmett - Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectra shown that AL/FePc-NrGO (activated lignin/iron phthalocyanine/nitrogen-doped reduction of graphene oxide) three-dimensional composite catalyst has been synthesized. The results showed that KOH-activated Kraft lignin had the best performance as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.73 V and a limiting diffusion current density of 4.3 mA cm-1. The THF-modified catalyst showed similar stability and methanol resistance to 20 % Pt/C at ORR. The ORR catalyst applied to the DLFC has the best electrical performance with an open circuit voltage (OCV) was 0.53 V and the maximum power density it could reach 95.29 mW m-2 when the catalyst was modified with THF. It is encouraging that the AL/FePc-NrGO catalyst has better-generated electricity performance than 20 % Pt/C. This work has provided a new idea for developing non-noble metal catalysts and studying direct biomass liquid fuel cells.

Chemical inertness conversion of carbon fraction in coal gangue via N-doping for efficient benzo(a)pyrene degradation

Efficient degradation of organic pollutants in complex media via advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is still critical and challenging. Herein, nitrogen (N)-doped coal gangue (CG) catalysts (N-CG) with economic competitiveness and environmental friendliness were successfully synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), exhibiting ultrafast degradation performance toward benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) with 100.00 % and 93.21 % in contaminated solution and soil under optimized condition, respectively. In addition, 0.4 N-CG possessed excellent reusability toward BaP degradation with over 80.00 % after five cycles. However, BaP removal efficiency was significantly affected by some co-existing anions (HCO3- and SO42-) and humic acid (HA) in solution and soil, as well as inhibited under alkaline conditions, especially pH ≥ 9. According to the characterizations, N-doping could promote the generation of pyridinic N and graphitic N in N-CG via high-temperature calcination, which was conducive to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), superoxide radical (•O2-) and single oxygen (1O2). In 0.4 N-CG/PMS system, 1O2 and •O2- were proved to be the predominant reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in BaP degradation, as well as •OH and SO4•- made certain contributions. To sum up, this work provided a promising strategy for synthesis of CG-based catalysts by chemical inertness conversion of carbon fracture via N-doping for PMS activation and opened a novel perspective for environmental remediation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic contaminants pollution.

Bimetal Oxides Anchored on Carbon Nanotubes/Nanosheets as High-Efficiency and Durable Bifunctional Oxygen Catalyst for Advanced Zn-Air Battery: Experiments and DFT Calculations

To meet increasing requirement for innovative energy storage and conversion technology, it is urgent to prepare effective, affordable, and long-term stable oxygen electrocatalysts to replace precious metal-based counterparts. Herein, a two-step pyrolysis strategy is developed for controlled synthesis of Fe2O3 and Mn3O4 anchored on carbon nanotubes/nanosheets (Fe2O3-Mn3O4-CNTs/NSs). The typical catalyst has a high half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.87 V) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), accompanied with a smaller overpotential (η10 = 290 mV) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), showing substantial improvement in the ORR and OER performances. As well, density functional theory calculations are performed to illustrate the catalytic mechanism, where the in situ generated Fe2O3 directly correlates to the reduced energy barrier, rather than Mn3O4. The Fe2O3-Mn3O4-CNTs/NSs-based Zn-air battery exhibits a high-power density (153 mW cm-2) and satisfyingly long durability (1650 charge/discharge cycles/550 h). This work provides a new reference for preparation of highly reversible oxygen conversion catalysts.

Zeolitic imidazole framework-derived rich-Zn-Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon with multiple enzyme-like activities for synergistic cancer therapy

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-centered chemodynamic therapy (CDT) holds significant potential for tumor-specific treatment. However, insufficient endogenous H2O2 and extra glutathione within tumor microenvironment (TME) severely deteriorate the CDT's effectiveness. Herein, rich-Zn-Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon (Zn-Co3O4/NC) was fabricated by two-step pyrolysis, and applied to build high-efficiency nano-platform for synergistic cancer therapy upon combination with glucose oxidase (GOx), labeled Zn-Co3O4/NC-GOx for clarity. Specifically, the multiple enzyme-like activities of the Zn-Co3O4/NC were scrutinously investigated, including peroxidase-like activity to convert H2O2 to O2∙-, catalase-like activity to decompose H2O2 into O2, and oxidase-like activity to transform O2 to O2∙-, which achieved the CDT through the catalytic cascade reaction. Simultaneously, GOx reacted with intracellular glucose to produce gluconic acid and H2O2, realizing starvation therapy. In the acidic TME, the Zn-Co3O4/NC-GOx rapidly caused intracellular Zn2+ pool overload and disrupted cellular homeostasis for ion-intervention therapy. Additionally, the Zn-Co3O4/NC exhibited glutathione peroxidase-like activity, which consumed glutathione in tumor cells and reduced the ROS consumption for ferroptosis. The tumor treatments offer some constructive insights into the nanozyme-mediated catalytic medicine, coupled by avoiding the TME limitations.

Dendritic quinary PtRhMoCoFe high-entropy alloy as a robust immunosensing nanoplatform for ultrasensitive detection of biomarker

Recently, high-entropy alloys have superior physicochemical properties as compared to conventional alloys for their glamorous "cocktail effect". Nevertheless, they are scarcely applied to electrochemical immunoassays until now. Herein, uniform PtRhMoCoFe high-entropy alloyed nanodendrites (HEANDs) were synthesized by a wet-chemical co-reduction method, where glucose and oleylamine behaved as the co-reducing agents. Then, a series of characterizations were conducted to illustrate the synergistic effect among multiple metals and fascinating structural characteristics of PtRhMoCoFe HEANDs. The obtained high-entropy alloy was adopted to build a electrochemical label-free biosensor for ultrasensitive bioassay of biomarker cTnI. In the optimized analytical system, the resultant sensor exhibited a dynamic linear range of 0.0001-200 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.0095 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3). Eventually, this sensing platform was further explored in serum samples with satisfied recovery (102.0 %). This research renders some constructive insights for synthesis of high-entropy alloys and their expanded applications in bioassays and bio-devices.

Self-Assembly Strategy for Constructing Porous Boron and Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon as an Efficient ORR Electrocatalyst toward Zinc-Air Battery

Carbon nanomaterials doped with N and B could activate nearby carbon atoms to promote charge polarization through the synergistic coupling effect between N and B atoms, thus facilitating adsorption of O2 and weakening O-O bond to enhance oxygen reduction reaction. Herein, a simple and controllable self-assembly strategy is applied to synthesize porous B, N co-doped carbon-based catalysts (BCN-P), which employs the macrocyclic molecule cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) as nitrogen source, and 3D aromatic-like closo-[B12H12]2- as boron source. In addition, polystyrene microspheres are added to help introduce porous structure to expose more active sites. Benefitting from porous structures and the synergistic coupling effect between N and B atoms, BCN-P has a high onset potential (Eonset=0.846 V) and half-wave potential (E1/2=0.74 V) in alkaline media. The zinc-air battery assembled with BCN-P shows high operating voltage (1.42 V), peak power density (128.7 mW cm-2) and stable charge/discharge cycles, which is even comparable with Pt/C.

Noble metal-free FeCoNiMnV high entropy alloy anchored on N-doped carbon nanotubes with prominent activity and durability for oxygen reduction and zinc-air batteries

Efficient and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are essential for constructing reliable energy conversion and storage devices. Herein, we prepared noble metal-free FeCoNiMnV high-entropy alloy supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCoNiMnV HEA/N-CNTs) by a one-step pyrolysis at 800 °C, as certificated by a set of characterizations. The graphitization degree of the N-CHTs was optimized by tuning the pyrolysis temperature in the control groups. The resultant catalyst greatly enhanced the ORR characteristics in the alkaline media, showing the positive onset potential (Eonset) of 0.99 V and half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.85 V. More importantly, the above FeCoNiMnV HEA/N-CNTs assembled Zn-air battery exhibited a greater open-circuit voltage (1.482 V), larger power density (185.12 mW cm-2), and outstanding cycle stability (1698 cycles, 566 h). This study provides some valuable insights on developing sustainable ORR catalysts in Zn-air batteries.

Methanol-induced assembly and pyrolysis preparation of three-dimensional N-doped interconnected open carbon cages supported FeNb2O6 nanoparticles for boosting oxygen reduction reaction and Zn-air battery

Three-dimensional (3D) hollow carbon is one of advanced nanomaterials widely applied in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, iron niobate (FeNb2O6) nanoparticles supported on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived 3D N-doped interconnected open carbon cages (FeNb2O6/NICC) were prepared by methanol induced assembly and pyrolysis strategy. During the fabrication process, the evaporation of methanol promoted the assembly and cross linkage of ZIF-8, rather than individual particles. The assembled ZIF-8 particles worked as in-situ sacrificial templates, in turn forming hierarchically interconnected open carbon cages after high-temperature pyrolysis. The as-made FeNb2O6/NICC showed a positive onset potential of 1.09 V and a half-wave potential of 0.88 V for the ORR, outperforming commercial Pt/C under the identical conditions. Later on, the as-built Zn-air battery with the FeNb2O6/NICC presented a greater power density of 100.6 mW cm-2 and durable long-cycle stability by operating for 200 h. For preparing 3D hollow carbon materials, this synthesis does not require a tedious removal process of template, which is more convenient than traditional method with silica and polystyrene spheres as templates. This work affords an exceptional example of developing 3D N-doped interconnected hollow carbon composites for energy conversion and storage devices.

Dendritic-like MXene quantum dots@CuNi as an efficient peroxidase candidate for colorimetric determination of glyphosate

Oxidized MXene quantum dots@CuNi bimetal (MQDs@CuNi) were firstly prepared through a simple hydrothermal method. Compared to the controlled samples, MQDs@CuNi1:1 showed the highest peroxidase-like activity. The catalytic mechanism of MQDs@CuNi1:1 was investigated using a steady-state fluorescence analysis, which showed that MQDs@CuNi1:1 efficiently decomposes H2O2 and produces highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH). Furthermore, theoretical calculations showed that the remarkable catalytic activity of MQDs@CuNi1:1 originates from the interaction between CuNi bimetal and MQDs to promote the activation and decomposition of H2O2, making it easier to combine with the hydrogen at the end of 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Accordingly, a sensitive colorimetric sensor is proposed to detect glyphosate (Glyp), displaying a low detection limit of 1.13 µM. The work will provide a new way for the development of high-performance nanozyme and demonstrate potential applicability for the determination of pesticide residues in environment.

Quantification of Glycated Hemoglobin in Total Hemoglobin by a Simultaneous Dual-Signal Acquisition Approach

The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, which is defined as the ratio of HbA1c to total hemoglobin (tHb, including glycated and unglycated hemoglobin), is considered one of the preferred indicators for diabetes monitoring. Generally, assessment of the HbA1c level requires separate determination of tHb and HbA1c concentrations after a complex separation step. This undoubtedly increases the cost of the assay, and the loss or degradation of HbA1c during the separation process results in a decrease in the accuracy of the assay. Therefore, this study explored a dual-signal acquisition method for the one-step simultaneous evaluation of tHb and HbA1c. Quantification of tHb: graphene adsorbed carbon quantum dots and methylene blue were utilized as the substrate material and linked to the antibody. tHb was captured on the substrate by the antibody. The unique heme group on tHb catalyzed the production of •OH from H2O2 to degrade methylene blue on the substrate, and a quantitative relationship between the tHb concentration and the methylene blue oxidation current signal was constructed. Quantification of HbA1c: complex labels with HbA1c recognition were made of ZIF-8-ferrocene-gold nanoparticles-mercaptophenylboronic acid. The specific recognition of the boronic acid bond with the unique cis-diol structure of HbA1c establishes a quantitative relationship between the oxidation current of the label-loaded ferrocene and the concentration of HbA1c. Thus, the HbA1c level can be assessed with only one signal readout. The sensor exhibited extensive detection ranges (0.200-600 ng/mL for tHb and 0.100-300 ng/mL for HbA1c) and low detection limits (4.00 × 10-3 ng/mL for tHb and 1.03 × 10-2 ng/mL for HbA1c).

MOF-derived sandwich-structured dual Z-Scheme Co9S8@ZnIn2S4/CdSe hollow nanocages heterojunction: Target-induced ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical sensing of chlorpyrifos

Exploring efficient photoactive material presents an intriguing opportunity to enhance the analytical performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor in the environmental analysis. In this work, a sandwich-structured multi-interface Co9S8@ZnIn2S4/CdSe QDs dual Z-Scheme heterojunction, derived from metal-organic framework (MOF), was synthesized as a sensing platform for chlorpyrifos detection, by integrating with enzyme-induced in situ insoluble precipitates strategy. The meticulously designed Co9S8@ZnIn2S4/CdSe QDs exhibited enhanced charge separation efficiency and was proved to be a highly effective sensing platform for the immobilization of biomolecules, attributing to the intrinsic dual Z-Scheme heterojunction and the distinctive hollow structure. The proposed PEC sensing platform combined with enzyme-induced in situ precipitate signal amplification strategy achieved superior performance for sensing of chlorpyrifos (CPF), showing in wide linear range (1.0 pg mL-1-100 ng mL-1), with a limit of detection (0.6 pg mL-1), excellent selectivity, and stability. This work offers valuable insights for the design of novel advanced photoactive materials aimed at detecting environmental pollutants with low level concentration.

Nitrogen-phosphorus dual-doped auricularia auricula porous carbon as host for Li-S battery

A nitrogen-phosphorus dual-doped porous spore carbon (NP-PSC) positive electrode matrix was prepared using native auricularia auricula as solid medium based on the principle of biomass rot. Yeast was introduce and cultured by the auricularia auricula solid medium. The freeze-drying and carbonization activation processes made the materials present a three-dimensional porous spore carbon aerogel properties. Yeast fermentation transformed auricularia auricula from blocky structure to porous structure and introduced nitrogen-phosphorus dual-doping. The physical and chemical properties of the prepared materials were characterized in detail. Electrochemical performance of NP-PSC in Li-S batteries was systematically investigated. Porous structure and heteroatom-doping improved the electrochemical performance, which is much superior to conventional activated carbon materials.

Fe single atoms encapsulated in N, P-codoped carbon nanosheets with enhanced peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection of methimazole

Excessive use of antithyroid drug methimazole (MMI) in pharmaceutical samples can cause hypothyroidism and symptoms of metabolic decline. Hence, it is urgent to develop rapid, low cost and accurate colorimetric method with peroxidase-like nanozymes for determination of MMI in medical, nutrition and pharmaceutical studies. Herein, Fe single atoms were facilely encapsulated into N, P-codoped carbon nanosheets (Fe SAs/NP-CSs) by a simple pyrolysis strategy, as certified by a series of characterizations. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy was employed to illustrate the high peroxidase-mimicking activity of the resultant Fe SAs/NP-CSs nanozyme through the typical catalysis of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation. The catalytic mechanism was scrutionously investigated by the fluorescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. Additionally, the introduced MMI had the ability to reduce the oxidation of TMB (termed oxTMB) as a peroxidase inhibitor, coupled by fading the blue color. By virtue of the above findings, a visual colorimetric sensor was established for dual detection of methimazole (MMI) with a linear scope of 5-50 mM and a LOD of 1.57 mM, coupled by assay of H2O2 at a linear range of 3-50 mM. According to the irreversible oxidation of the drug, its screening with acceptable results was achieved on the sensing platform even in commercial tablets The Fe SAs/NP-CSs nanozyme holds great potential for clinical diagnosis and drug analysis.

The mechanism of NOx removal in the sintering process based on source reduction of carbon emissions

This study systematically investigates the mechanism of NOx emissions during the sintering process, with a focus on the utilization of biochar as an auxiliary fuel to replace a portion of the coke traditionally used in iron ore sintering. The research involved the simulation of sintering raw material ratios using iron ore, biochar, and coke powder. Substitution levels of biochar for coke were set at 0%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. NOx emissions during the sintering process were monitored using a sintering flue gas detection system. Simultaneously, a comprehensive analysis of the sintered ore was conducted with the aim of producing samples that meet sintered ore requirements while reducing NOx emissions. Experimental results revealed that when biomass charcoal substitution for coke reached 50%, the lowest NO emissions were observed during the sintering process, with a reduction of over 90% in accumulated NO emissions in the exhaust gas. In this process, due to the participation of biochar, CO2 emissions were reduced by approximately 50% compared to traditional sintering processes. The study also analyzed the physicochemical properties of the sintered ore using methods such as XRD, Raman, FTIR, and Vickers hardness testing. The results indicated that the hardness fluctuated within the range of 610 to 710N for sintered products with different levels of biochar substitution, and there were minimal changes in Fe element content and crystal phase transformations.

Fe(OH)x modified ultra-small Ru nanoparticles for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction and its application in water splitting

Developing highly active electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of remarkable significance for industrial production of H2. Herein, exceptionally active Fe(OH)x modified ultra-small Ru nanoparticles on Ni(OH)2 nanosheets array (Fe(OH)x-Ru/Ni(OH)2) for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are reported. The Fe(OH)x-Ru/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets array prepared with Fe/Ru molar ratio of 5 only requires extremely low overpotentials of 61, 127 and 170 mV to reach current densities of 100, 500 and 800 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, respectively, exceeding Pt/C catalyst (75, 160 and 177 mV). Meanwhile, the Fe(OH)x/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets array derived from Fe(OH)x-Ru/Ni(OH)2 exhibits excellent OER activity. It gains current densities of 100, 500 and 800 mA cm-2 at considerably low overpotentials of 265, 285 and 296 mV, respectively, much lower than those of RuO2 and most reported electrocatalysts. The introduction of Fe(OH)x significantly improves the HER activity of Ru nanoparticles by tunning the electronic structure and forming interfaces between Ru and Fe(OH)x. Dramatically, the integrated alkaline electrolyzer based on Fe(OH)x-Ru/Ni(OH)2 and Fe(OH)x/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets array pair just needs 1.649 V to yield a current density up to 500 mA cm-2, exceeding most reported water-splitting electrocatalysts. The strategy reported in this work can be facilely extended to prepare other similar Ru based materials and their derivatives with outstanding catalytic performance for water splitting.

Co3O4/NiCo2O4 heterojunction as oxygen evolution reaction catalyst for efficient luminol anode electrochemiluminescence

Luminol has garnered significant attention from analysts as one of the most effective and commonly used electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reagents. However, the efficient luminescence of luminol anode is limited by the excitation of various reactive oxygen species (ROS). Typically, ROS are generated through co-reactive reagents and dissolved oxygen. Unfortunately, the former suffers from two drawbacks, namely biotoxicity and instability, while the latter cannot offer sufficient oxygen due to its limited solubility in aqueous solutions. Consequently, a low decomposition rate is usually obtained, leading to insufficient ROS. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient luminol anode systems. This study focuses on the use of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template, employing a controlled chemical etching method to create a ZIF-67/Ni-Co-layered double hydroxide (LDH). The intermediate composite is then annealed in air, resulting in the formation of a Co3O4/NiCo2O4 double-shelled nanobox (DSNB) heterostructure. Due to its structural advantages, the DSNB exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore, it was found that both the intermediates and products of OER can directly participate in the luminol chemiluminescence process, ultimately resulting in a 700-fold increase in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal compared to an equal molar concentration of luminol solution. This work not only establishes the OER-mediated ECL system but also deepens the understanding of the relationship between ROS and luminol, providing a new pathway to study the luminol anodic ECL luminescence system.

Confined Synthesis of Dual-Atoms Within Pores of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts exhibit higher reactivity and selectivity than the single-atom catalysts. The pyrolysis of bimetal salt precursors is the most typical method for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts; however, the finiteness of bimetal salts limits the variety of dual-atomic catalysts. In this study, a confined synthesis strategy for synthesizing dual-atomic catalysts is developed. Owing to the in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in the pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the migration and aggregation of metal atoms are suppressed adequately during the pyrolysis process. The resultant catalyst contains abundant Zn─Co dual atomic sites with 2.8 wt.% Zn and 0.5 wt.% Co. The catalyst exhibits high reactivity toward oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.86 V, which is superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Zn atoms in the Zn─Co dual atomic sites promote the formation of intermediate OOH*, and thus contribute to high catalytic performance. This study provides new insights into the design of dual-atom catalysts using COFs.

Synergistic Effect of Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Low Pt-Loaded CuPt Alloy Nanoparticles Supported on N-Doped Hierarchical Porous Carbon

It is challenging to synthesize oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts that are highly efficient, affordable, and stable for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To address this challenge, we developed a low platinum-loading (only 6.68% wt) ORR catalyst (PtCu1-NC), comprising CuPt nanoparticles (average size: 1.51 nm) supported on the N-doped carbon substrates. PtCu1-NC possesses a high specific surface area of 662 m2 g-1 and a hierarchical porous structure, facilitating efficient mass transfer. The synergistic effect from introduced copper and the electron effect from nitrogen modify the electronic structure of platinum, effectively accelerating the ORR reaction and enhancing stability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the catalytic mechanism and further verify the synergistic effect. Electrochemical assessments indicate that PtCu1-NC exhibits specific activity and mass activity 5.3 and 5.6 times higher, respectively, than commercial Pt/C. The half-wave potential is 27 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C. The electrochemical active surface area value is 104.3 m2 g-1, surpassing that of Pt/C. Approximately 78% of current is retained after 10,000 s chronoamperometry measurement. These results highlight the effectiveness of alloying in improving the catalyst performance.

In Situ Electrodeposition of Ultralow Pt into NiFe-Metal-Organic Framework/Nickel Foam Nanosheet Arrays as a Bifunctional Catalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Exploring highly effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with surface structural advantages and synergistic optimization effects among multimetals is greatly important for overall water splitting. Herein, we successfully synthesized Pt-loaded NiFe-metal-organic framework nanosheet arrays grown on nickel foam (Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF) via a facile hydrothermal-electrodeposition process. Benefiting from large exposed specific surface, optimal electrical conductivity and efficient metal-support interaction endow Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF with highly catalytic performance, exhibiting small overpotential of 261 mV toward oxygen evolution reaction and 125 mV toward hydrogen evolution reaction at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline medium. More significantly, the assembled water electrolyzer comprising the Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF//Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF couple demands a low cell voltage of 1.45 V to reach 10 mA cm-2. This work renders a viable approach to design dual-functional electrocatalysts with exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability at high current density, showing the great prospect of water electrolysis for commercial application.

Three-dimensional ordered macroporous design of heterogeneous cobalt-iron phosphides as oxygen evolution electrocatalyst

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in electrochemical conversion, which needs efficient and economical electrocatalyst to boost its kinetics for large-scale application. Herein, a bimetallic CoP/FeP2heterostructure with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (3DOM-CoP/FeP2) was synthesized as an OER catalyst to demonstrate a heterogeneous engineering induction strategy. By adjusting the electron distribution and producing a lot of active sites, the heterogeneous interface enhances catalytic performance. High specific surface area is provided by the 3DOM structure. Additionally, at the solid-gas-electrolyte threephase interface, the electrocatalytic reaction exhibits good mass transfer.In situRaman spectroscopy characterization revealed that FeOOH and CoOOH reconstructed from CoP/FeP2were the true OER active sites. Consequently, the 3DOM-CoP/FeP2demonstrates superior OER activity with a low overpotentials of 300/420 mV at 10/100 mA cm-2and meritorious OER durability. It also reveals promising performance as the overall water splitting anode.

Research Progress on Atomically Dispersed Fe-N-C Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The efficiency and performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are primarily influenced by ORR electrocatalysts. In recent years, atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have gained significant attention due to their high active center density, high atomic utilization, and high activity. These catalysts are now considered the preferred alternative to traditional noble metal electrocatalysts. The unique properties of M-N-C catalysts are anticipated to enhance the energy conversion efficiency and lower the manufacturing cost of the entire system, thereby facilitating the commercialization and widespread application of fuel cell technology. This article initially delves into the origin of performance and degradation mechanisms of Fe-N-C catalysts from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. Building on this foundation, the focus shifts to strategies aimed at enhancing the activity and durability of atomically dispersed Fe-N-C catalysts. These strategies encompass the use of bimetallic atoms, atomic clusters, heteroatoms (B, S, and P), and morphology regulation to optimize catalytic active sites. This article concludes by detailing the current challenges and future prospects of atomically dispersed Fe-N-C catalysts.

Tandem effect at snowflake-like cuprous sulphide interfaces for highly selective conversion of carbon dioxide to formate by electrochemical reduction

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECR) is a commercially promising technology to resolve the energy dilemma and accomplish carbon recycling. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst has been investigated to produce formate (HCOOH) highly selectively during ECR by loading SnO2@C onto cuprous sulphide (Cu2S) to form a triplet effect at the interface. Snowflake-like Cu2S significantly enhances the local concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and promotes the binding of CO2 with SnO2, and the addition of carbon spheres enhances the electron transport, which is beneficial to the conversion of CO2 to HCOOH products. The snowflake-like Cu2S loaded with 1 wt% SnO2@C had an HCOOH Faraday Efficiency of 88% at -1.0 V (vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode, RHE), and the current density for CO2 reduction was stabilized at 15.6 mA cm-2, which was much higher than the HCOOH Faraday efficiency (FE) of 31.0% for pure Cu2S accompanied by a CO2 reduction current density of 3.9 mA cm-2. Combined investigations using in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) with in-situ Raman spectra reveal that the active species is Cu+. Cu2S/1%SnO2@C can effectively promote the adsorption and activation of carbonate and inhibit the production of CO intermediates. The corresponding density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that Cu2S/1%SnO2@C can well stabilize the HCOO* intermediate during the ECR process. The interaction between Cu2S and SnO2@C adjusts the surface electronic distribution and accelerates electron transfer, which efficiently improves CO2-to-HCOOH conversion. The result obtained from this work provides a simple and efficient electrocatalyst to enhance the HCOOH selectivity of ECR.

A lignin-derived N-doped carbon-supported iron-based nanocomposite as high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst

Fuel cells are a promising renewable energy technology that depend heavily on noble metal Pt-based catalysts, particularly for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The discovery of new, efficient non-precious metal ORR catalysts is critical for the continued development of cost-effective, high-performance fuel cells. The synthesized carbon material showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the ORR, with half-wave potential (E1/2) and limiting current density (JL) of 0.88 V and 5.10 mA·cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. The material has a Tafel slope of (65 mV dec-1), which is close to commercial Pt/C catalysts (60 mV dec-1). Moreover, the prepared materials exhibited excellent performance when assembled as cathodes for zinc-air batteries. The power density reached 110.02 mW cm-2 and the theoretical specific capacity was 801.21 mAh g-1, which was higher than that of the Pt/C catalyst (751.19 mAh g-1). In this study, with the assistance of Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O, we introduce an innovative approach to synthesize advanced carbon materials, achieving precise control over the material's structure and properties. This research bridges a crucial gap in material science, with potential applications in renewable energy technologies, particularly in enhancing catalysts for fuel cells.

Fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode multienzyme cascade nanoplatform based on CuNCs/FeMn-ZIF-8/PCN for detection of sarcosine

It is critical to develop a highly efficient and sensitive method for detecting the biomarker sarcosine (SA) of prostate cancer due to its importance for men's health. In our work, a fluorescence (FL) and colorimetric dual-mode multienzyme cascade nanoplatform for SA detection was designed and constructed. CuNCs/FeMn-ZIF-8/PCN nanocomposites with high FL properties and peroxidase-like activity were successfully prepared by encapsulating copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) into FeMn-ZIF-8 and then loaded onto P-doped graphitic carbon nitride (PCN). Furthermore, the nanocomposites served as carriers for the immobilization of sarcosine oxidase (SOX) to construct a high-efficiency dual-mode multienzyme cascade nanoplatform CuNCs/SOX@FeMn-ZIF-8/PCN for the detection of SA. The intermediate H2O2 generated in the cascade caused the FL quenching of nanocomposites and the discoloration of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidin. The linear ranges for SA detection in the dual-mode system were 1-100 μM (FL) and 1-200 μM (colorimetric), with detection limits of 0.34 and 0.59 μM, respectively. This nanoplatform exhibited notable repeatability, specificity, and stability, making it suitable for detecting sarcosine in real human urine samples. Therefore, this dual-mode multienzyme cascade nanoplatform would have a potential applicative prospect for detecting SA and other biomarkers in real clinical samples.

Cheap and portable paper chip with terrific oxidase-like activity and SERS enhancement performance for SERS-colorimetric bimodal detection of intracellular glutathione

Glutathione (GSH) acts a crucial role in the normal operation of manifold life activities and is closely bound up with many human diseases. Here, a SERS-colorimetric bimodal paper-based biosensor based on Mn-doped CDs/silver nanoparticles (Mn-CDs/AgNPs) has been fabricated for high-efficiency quantification of intracellular GSH. The Mn-CDs/AgNPs with fine oxidase-like characteristic and SERS enhancement ability has been assembled onto the Whatman filter paper (WFP) to cleverly fabricate paper chip (Mn-CDs/AgNPs@WFP) which can trigger the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue TMBox and simultaneously enhance the SERS signal of TMBox. However, the introduction of GSH inhibits the oxidation of TMB, leading to color fading of paper chip and diminishment of SERS signal. Considering this, the bimodal paper-based sensing platform can be exploited for SERS-colorimetric detection of GSH, manifesting excellent selectivity, reliable stability, and satisfactory precision. The detection limits of SERS and colorimetric detection modes are as low as 0.41 μM and 0.53 μM, respectively. Furthermore, this proposed bimodal biosensor has been successfully utilized for the determination of intracellular GSH and validated by commercial GSH assay kit, which provides a mighty and convenient tool for intracellular GSH detection and can boost future effort about exploitation of other multimode paper-based biosensors as well as promote their appliances in disease diagnosis.

Modulating Electronic Structures of Bimetallic Co-Fe Sulfide Ultrathin Nanosheet Supported on g-C3N4 Promoting Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance

Heteroatom doping is a possible way to regulate the catalytic capability of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work focuses on the development of bimetallic Cobalt-Iron sulfide ultrathin nanosheets supported on the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) catalyst as efficient HER electrocatalysts (CoS2/FeS2/CN) with good stability at wide pH value. The ultrathin nanosheet exposes more active sites and enhances the catalyst activity. Electrochemical experiments demonstrate that adding g-C3N4 and Fe to CoS2 increases its catalytic activity and stability. Furthermore, g-C3N4 and Fe co-doped with CoS2 can modulate electronic structures on the interface. The CoS2/FeS2/CN exhibits outstanding HER performance, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with overpotentials of only 76.5 mV in an acidic solution and 175.6 mV in an alkaline solution. It also demonstrates exceptional durability, superior to commercial platinum/carbon catalysts. This work introduces a promising approach for designing low-cost, high-performance HER electrocatalysts with a wide pH range.

Preparation of an N-S dual-doped black fungus porous carbon matrix and its application in high-performance Li-S batteries

A nitrogen-sulfur dual-doped black fungus porous carbon (NS-FPC) matrix was prepared with natural black fungus as the carbon source and cysteine as the nitrogen-sulfur source. A black fungus-based solution was obtained by hydrothermal treatment. After further carbonization activation and combination with sulfur processing, the NS-FPC/S positive electrode materials were prepared. The uniform recombination of biomass carbon provides an efficient conductive framework for sulfur. The porous structure is conducive to the transport of electrolytes. Heteroatom doping can provide a more active site. The structure and composition analyses of the materials were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electronic binding energy and bonding state were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and pore size distribution were analyzed using an N2 adsorption-desorption experiment. Sulfur loading was determined through thermogravimetric analysis. The electrochemical performance of NS-FPC/S in Li-S batteries was systematically investigated. The result shows that the NS-FPC/S electrode maintains more than 1,000 mAh g-1 reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 0.2 C current density, with a capacity retention of 85%. The cycle and rate performance are both considerably superior to those of traditional activated carbon materials.

Enhancement and inactivation effect of CRISPR/Cas12a via extending hairpin activators for detection of transcription factors

An enhancement effect for the activation of CRISPR/Cas12a (CRISPR = clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats; Cas = CRISPR-associated) was discovered. That was, a hairpin model with dangling 5' end complementary to crRNA (CRISPR RNA) greatly improved the activity of CRISPR/Cas12a after extention of two random sequences. But, the corresponding intact hairpin without PAM (protospacer adjacent motif) or suboptimal PAM sequences was completely inactive to CRISPR/Cas12a because of the superhigh stability of intact hairpin. According to the finding, a CRISPR/Cas12a-based strategy coupled with a signal reported system was designed for transcription factors detection. By using mono-labeled ssDNA (single-stranded DNA) as reporter and two newly synthesized N-C (nitrogen-doped carbon) nanosheets as scavenger to eliminate the fluorescent background, the strategy realized the detection of NF-ĸB p50 (p50 subunit of nuclear factor kappa-B) with a linear detection range of 0.8 - 2000.0 pM and a LOD of 0.5 pM. The discovery of "enhancement and inactivation effect" not only deepened insight into CRISPR/Cas12a but also broadened the practical application of CRISPR/Cas systems for the molecular detection and disease diagnostics.

Enzymolytic Lignin-Derived N-S Codoped Porous Carbon Nanocomposites as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Currently, the development of nonmetallic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts based on heteroatomic-doped carbon materials is receiving increaseing attention in the field of fuel cells. Here, we used enzymolytic lignin (EL), melamine, and thiourea as carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur sources and NH4Cl as an activator to prepare N- and S-codoped lignin-based polyporous carbon (ELC) by one-step pyrolysis. The prepared lignin-derived biocarbon material (ELC-1-900) possessed a high specific surface area (844 m2 g-1), abundant mesoporous structure, and a large pore volume (0.587 cm3 g-1). The XPS results showed that ELC-1-900 was successfully doped with N and S. ELC-1-900 exhibited extremely high activity and stability in alkaline media for the ORR, with a half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.88 V) and starting potential (Eonset = 0.98 V) superior to those of Pt/C catalysts and most non-noble-metal catalysts reported in recent studies. In addition, ELC-1-900 showed better ORR stability and methanol tolerance in alkaline media than commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Ir-Doped Bilayer Heterojunction Hollow Nanoboxes for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The fabrication of hollow nanoelectrocatalysts with multilayered heterogeneous interfaces, derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, represents a highly efficient strategy that promotes the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Within this research, we successfully synthesized a hollow nanobox of Ir-doped ZIF-67@CoFe PBA with bilayer heterointerfaces. The distinctive structure of Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA provides a substantial number of active sites for reaction intermediates, resulting in improved utilization of precious metals. Furthermore, experimental results indicate the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of the optimized Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA, as indicated by a mere 269 mV overpotential at 10 mA·cm-2, accompanied by a small Tafel slope of 80.1 mV·dec-1. Moreover, the Schottky junction formed between the heterojunction and Ir within Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA accelerates the electron-transfer rate, contributing to its exceptional catalytic performance compared to that of a catalyst derived solely from ZIF-67. This distinctive feature of the catalyst holds tremendous application value.

Novel synergistically effects of palladium-iron bimetal and manganese carbonate carrier for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at room temperature

The elimination of formaldehyde at room temperature holds immense potential for various applications, and the incorporation of a catalyst rich in surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen significantly enhances its catalytic activity towards formaldehyde oxidation. By employing a coprecipitation method, we successfully achieved a palladium domain confined within the manganese carbonate lattice and doped with iron. This synergistic effect between highly dispersed palladium and iron greatly amplifies the concentration of surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen on the catalyst, thereby enabling complete oxidation of formaldehyde at ambient conditions. The proposed method facilitates the formation of domain-limited palladium within the MnCO3 lattice, thereby enhancing the dispersion of palladium and facilitating its partial incorporation into the MnCO3 lattice. Consequently, this approach promotes increased exposure of active sites and enhances the catalyst's capacity for oxygen activation. The co-doping of iron effectively splits the doping sites of palladium to further enhance its dispersion, while simultaneously modifying the electronic modification of the catalyst to alter formaldehyde's adsorption strength on it. Manganese carbonate exhibits superior adsorption capability for activated surface hydroxyl groups due to the presence of carbonate. In situ infrared testing revealed that dioxymethylene and formate are primary products resulting from catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde, with catalyst surface oxygen and hydroxyl groups playing a crucial role in intermediate product decomposition and oxidation. This study provides novel insights for designing palladium-based catalysts.

Cu2+-regulated one-pot wet-chemical synthesis of uniform PdCu nanostars for electrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol

The fabrication of effective and stable electrocatalysts is crucial for practical applications of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). In this study, bimetallic PdCu nanostars (PdCu NSs) were fabricated by a Cu²⁺-modulated one-pot wet-chemical method, where cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) worked as a structure-regulating reagent. The morphology, compositions, crystal structures and formation mechanism of the as-prepared PdCu NSs were investigated by a series of techniques. The unique architectures created abundant active sites, which resulted in a large electrochemical active surface area (9.5 m² g^-1). The PdCu NSs showed negative shifts in the onset potentials and large forward peak current densities by contrast with those of commercial Pd black for the catalytic ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). It revealed that the PdCu NSs outperformed Pd black in the similar surroundings. This work provides a constructive strategy for fabrication of high-efficiency electrocatalysts for alcohol fuel cells.
