Carbon nanomaterials as carriers for the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin: a review on theoretical and experimental studies

The incidence of cancer is increasing worldwide in a life-threatening manner. In such a scenario, the development of anti-cancer drugs with minimal side effects and effective drug delivery systems is of paramount importance. Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the powerful anti-cancer drugs from the chemical family anthracycline, which is used to treat a wide variety of cancers, including breast, prostate, ovarian, and hematological malignancies. However, DOX has been associated with many side effects, including lethal cardiotoxicity, baldness, gastrointestinal disturbances and cognitive function impairment. Even though DOX is administered in liposomal formulations to reduce its toxicity and enhance its therapeutic profile, the liposomal formulations themselves have certain therapeutic profile limitations such as "palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE)", which shows severe swelling and redness in the skin, thus restricting the dosage and reducing patient compliance. In contemporary chemotherapy research, there is a great interest in the utilization of nanomaterials for precise and targeted drug delivery applications, especially using carbon-based nanomaterials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of both experimental and theoretical scientific works, exploring diverse forms of carbon-based materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotubes that function as carriers for DOX. In addition, the review consolidates information on the fate of the carriers after the delivery of the payload at the site of action through different imaging techniques and the various pathways through which the body eliminates these nanomaterials. In conclusion, the review presents a detailed overview of the toxicities associated with these carriers within the human body, contributing to the development of enhanced drug delivery systems.

Emergence of graphene as a novel nanomaterial for cardiovascular applications

Cardiovascular diseases (CDs) are the foremost cause of death worldwide. Several promising therapeutic methods have been developed for this approach, including pharmacological, surgical intervention, cell therapy, or biomaterial implantation since heart tissue is incapable of regenerating and healing on its own. The best treatment for heart failure to date is heart transplantation and invasive surgical intervention, despite their invasiveness, donor limitations, and the possibility of being rejected by the patient's immune system. To address these challenges, research is being conducted on less invasive and efficient methods. Consequently, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have attracted a great deal of interest in the last decade because of their exceptional mechanical, electrical, chemical, antibacterial, and biocompatibility properties. An overview of GBMs' applications in the cardiovascular system has been presented in this article. Following a brief explanation of graphene and its derivatives' properties, the potential of GBMs to improve and restore cardiovascular system function by using them as cardiac tissue engineering, stents, vascular bypass grafts,and heart valve has been discussed.

Atomistic understanding of Ti3C2 MXene membrane performance for separation of nitrate ions from aqueous solutions

Water desalination, which is a reliable method for providing drinking water and a suitable solution, as well as the membrane filtration method in wastewater treatment, has increased significantly in recent years. In this research, the separation of nitrite and nitrate ions from aqueous solutions was done using the MXene membrane of the Ti3C2 type using molecular dynamics simulation. In this study, various parameters, such as pore size MXene structure, characteristics of cavities, applied pressure, and flux were investigated. To investigate the removal of toxic pollutants from water, water flux, potential mean force, distribution of water molecules, and density were investigated. The results showed that the amount of penetration through the membrane increased with the increase in pressure. It was observed that by applying pressure to the system, the number of water molecules accumulated in front of the membrane decreases because they quickly pass through the membrane, which indicates the positive effect of increasing pressure on the separation rate of molecules. The permeability of this membrane was several times higher than the existing membranes in the industry. So that Mexene membranes, which consist of at least two layers, can repel ions with 100 % success.

Biomedical applications of graphene-based nanomaterials: recent progress, challenges, and prospects in highly sensitive biosensors

Graphene-based nanomaterials (graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, graphene quantum dots, graphene-based nanocomposites, etc.) are emerging as an extremely important class of nanomaterials primarily because of their unique and advantageous physical, chemical, biological, and optoelectronic aspects. These features have resulted in uses across diverse areas of scientific research. Among all other applications, they are found to be particularly useful in designing highly sensitive biosensors. Numerous studies have established their efficacy in sensing pathogens and other biomolecules allowing for the rapid diagnosis of various diseases. Considering the growing importance and popularity of graphene-based materials for biosensing applications, this review aims to provide the readers with a summary of the recent progress in the concerned domain and highlights the challenges associated with the synthesis and application of these multifunctional materials.

Emerging 2D Nanomaterials-Integrated Hydrogels: Advancements in Designing Theragenerative Materials for Bone Regeneration and Disease Therapy

This review highlights recent advancements in the synthesis, processing, properties, and applications of 2D-material integrated hydrogels, with a focus on their performance in bone-related applications. Various synthesis methods and types of 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and MXene are discussed, along with strategies for their incorporation into hydrogel matrices. These composite hydrogels exhibit tunable mechanical properties, high surface area, strong near-infrared (NIR) photon absorption and controlled release capabilities, making them suitable for a range of regeneration and therapeutic applications. In cancer therapy, 2D-material-based hydrogels show promise for photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and drug delivery (chemotherapy). The photothermal properties of these materials enable selective tumor ablation upon NIR irradiation, while their high drug-loading capacity facilitates targeted and controlled release of chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, 2D-materials -infused hydrogels exhibit potent antibacterial activity, making them effective against multidrug-resistant infections and disruption of biofilm generated on implant surface. Moreover, their synergistic therapy approach combines multiple treatment modalities such as photothermal, chemo, and immunotherapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In bio-imaging, these materials serve as versatile contrast agents and imaging probes, enabling their real-time monitoring during tumor imaging. Furthermore, in bone regeneration, most 2D-materials incorporated hydrogels promote osteogenesis and tissue regeneration, offering potential solutions for bone defects repair. Overall, the integration of 2D materials into hydrogels presents a promising platform for developing multifunctional theragenerative biomaterials.

Recent Progress in Polysaccharide-Based Materials for Energy Applications: A Review

In recent years, polysaccharides have emerged as a promising alternative for the development of environmentally friendly materials. Polysaccharide-based materials have been mainly studied for applications in the food, packaging, and biomedical industries. However, many investigations report processing routes and treatments that enable the modification of the inherent properties of polysaccharides, making them useful as materials for energy applications. The control of the ionic and electronic conductivities of polysaccharide-based materials allows for the development of solid electrolytes and electrodes. The incorporation of conductive and semiconductive phases can modify the permittivities of polysaccharides, increasing their capacity for charge storage, making them useful as active surfaces of energy harvesting devices such as triboelectric nanogenerators. Polysaccharides are inexpensive and abundant and could be considered as a suitable option for the development and improvement of energy devices. This review provides an overview of the main research work related to the use of both common commercially available polysaccharides and local native polysaccharides, including starch, chitosan, carrageenan, ulvan, agar, and bacterial cellulose. Solid and gel electrolytes derived from polysaccharides show a wide range of ionic conductivities from 0.0173 × 10-3 to 80.9 × 10-3 S cm-1. Electrodes made from polysaccharides show good specific capacitances ranging from 8 to 753 F g-1 and current densities from 0.05 to 5 A g-1. Active surfaces based on polysaccharides show promising results with power densities ranging from 0.15 to 16 100 mW m-2. These investigations suggest that in the future polysaccharides could become suitable materials to replace some synthetic polymers used in the fabrication of energy storage devices, including batteries, supercapacitors, and energy harvesting devices.

A Review on Investigating the Interactions between Nanoparticles and the Pulmonary Surfactant Monolayer with Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Method

Pulmonary drug delivery has garnered significant attention due to its targeted local lung action, minimal toxic side effects, and high drug utilization. However, the physicochemical properties of inhaled nanoparticles (NPs) used as drug carriers can influence their interactions with the pulmonary surfactant (PS) monolayer, potentially altering the fate of the NPs and impairing the biophysical function of the PS monolayer. Thus, the objective of this review is to summarize how the physicochemical properties of NPs affect their interactions with the PS monolayer. Initially, the definition and properties of NPs, as well as the composition and characteristics of the PS monolayer, are introduced. Subsequently, the coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulation method for studying the interactions between NPs and the PS monolayer is presented. Finally, the implications of the hydrophobicity, size, shape, surface charge, surface modification, and aggregation of NPs on their interactions with the PS monolayer and on the composition of biomolecular corona are discussed. In conclusion, gaining a deeper understanding of the effects of the physicochemical properties of NPs on their interactions with the PS monolayer will contribute to the development of safer and more effective nanomedicines for pulmonary drug delivery.

Graphene-Based Photodynamic Therapy and Overcoming Cancer Resistance Mechanisms: A Comprehensive Review

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive therapy that has made significant progress in treating different diseases, including cancer, by utilizing new nanotechnology products such as graphene and its derivatives. Graphene-based materials have large surface area and photothermal effects thereby making them suitable candidates for PDT or photo-active drug carriers. The remarkable photophysical properties of graphene derivates facilitate the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon light irradiation, which destroys cancer cells. Surface functionalization of graphene and its materials can also enhance their biocompatibility and anticancer activity. The paper delves into the distinct roles played by graphene-based materials in PDT such as photosensitizers (PS) and drug carriers while at the same time considers how these materials could be used to circumvent cancer resistance. This will provide readers with an extensive discussion of various pathways contributing to PDT inefficiency. Consequently, this comprehensive review underscores the vital roles that graphene and its derivatives may play in emerging PDT strategies for cancer treatment and other medical purposes. With a better comprehension of the current state of research and the existing challenges, the integration of graphene-based materials in PDT holds great promise for developing targeted, effective, and personalized cancer treatments.

Nanomaterials in crossroad of autophagy control in human cancers: Amplification of cell death mechanisms

Cancer is the result of genetic abnormalities that cause normal cells to grow into neoplastic cells. Cancer is characterized by several distinct features, such as uncontrolled cell growth, extensive spreading to other parts of the body, and the ability to resist treatment. The scientists have stressed the development of nanostructures as novel therapeutic options in suppressing cancer, in response to the emergence of resistance to standard medicines. One of the specific mechanisms with dysregulation during cancer is autophagy. Nanomaterials have the ability to specifically carry medications and genes, and they can also enhance the responsiveness of tumor cells to standard therapy while promoting drug sensitivity. The primary mechanism in this process relies on autophagosomes and their fusion with lysosomes to break down the components of the cytoplasm. While autophagy was initially described as a form of cellular demise, it has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in controlling metastasis, proliferation, and treatment resistance in human malignancies. The pharmacokinetic profile of autophagy modulators is poor, despite their development for use in cancer therapy. Consequently, nanoparticles have been developed for the purpose of delivering medications and autophagy modulators selectively and specifically to the cancer process. Furthermore, several categories of nanoparticles have demonstrated the ability to regulate autophagy, which plays a crucial role in defining the biological characteristics and response to therapy of tumor cells.

Advancing Nanomaterial Toxicology Screening Through Efficient and Cost-Effective Quantitative Proteomics

Proteomic investigations yield high-dimensional datasets, yet their application to large-scale toxicological assessments is hindered by reproducibility challenges due to fluctuating measurement conditions. To address these limitations, this study introduces an advanced tandem mass tag (TMT) labeling protocol. Although labeling approaches shorten data acquisition time by multiplexing samples compared to traditional label-free quantification (LFQ) methods in general, the associated costs may surge significantly with large sample sets, for example, in toxicological screenings. However, the introduced advanced protocol offers an efficient, cost-effective alternative, reducing TMT reagent usage (by a factor of ten) and requiring minimal biological material (1 µg), while demonstrating increased reproducibility compared to LFQ. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the advanced protocol is employed to assess the toxicity of nine benchmark nanomaterials (NMs) on A549 lung epithelial cells. While LFQ measurements identify 3300 proteins, they proved inadequate to reveal NM toxicity. Conversely, despite detecting 2600 proteins, the TMT protocol demonstrates superior sensitivity by uncovering alterations induced by NM treatment. In contrast to previous studies, the introduced advanced protocol allows simultaneous and straightforward assessment of multiple test substances, enabling prioritization, ranking, and grouping for hazard evaluation. Additionally, it fosters the development of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), contributing to innovative methodologies in toxicological research.

Chasing Graphene-Based Anticancer Drugs: Where are We Now on the Biomedical Graphene Roadmap?

Graphene and graphene-based materials have attracted growing interest for potential applications in medicine because of their good biocompatibility, cargo capability and possible surface functionalizations. In parallel, prototypic graphene-based devices have been developed to diagnose, imaging and track tumor growth in cancer patients. There is a growing number of reports on the use of graphene and its functionalized derivatives in the design of innovative drugs delivery systems, photothermal and photodynamic cancer therapy, and as a platform to combine multiple therapies. The aim of this review is to introduce the latest scientific achievements in the field of innovative composite graphene materials as potentially applied in cancer therapy. The "Technology and Innovation Roadmap" published in the Graphene Flagship indicates, that the first anti-cancer drugs using graphene and graphene-derived materials will have appeared on the market by 2030. However, it is necessary to broaden understanding of graphene-based material interactions with cellular metabolism and signaling at the functional level, as well as toxicity. The main aspects of further research should elucidate how treatment methods (e.g., photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, combination therapy) and the physicochemical properties of graphene materials influence their ability to modulate autophagy and kill cancer cells. Interestingly, recent scientific reports also prove that graphene nanocomposites modulate cancer cell death by inducing precise autophagy dysfunctions caused by lysosome damage. It turns out as well that developing photothermal oncological treatments, it should be taken into account that near-infrared-II radiation (1000-1500 nm) is a better option than NIR-I (750-1000 nm) because it can penetrate deeper into tissues due to less scattering at longer wavelengths radiation.

From papers to RDF-based integration of physicochemical data and adverse outcome pathways for nanomaterials

Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) have been proposed to facilitate mechanistic understanding of interactions of chemicals/materials with biological systems. Each AOP starts with a molecular initiating event (MIE) and possibly ends with adverse outcome(s) (AOs) via a series of key events (KEs). So far, the interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with biomolecules, biomembranes, cells, and biological structures, in general, is not yet fully elucidated. There is also a huge lack of information on which AOPs are ENMs-relevant or -specific, despite numerous published data on toxicological endpoints they trigger, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. We propose to integrate related data and knowledge recently collected. Our approach combines the annotation of nanomaterials and their MIEs with ontology annotation to demonstrate how we can then query AOPs and biological pathway information for these materials. We conclude that a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) representation of the ENM-MIE knowledge simplifies integration with other knowledge. SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTION: This study introduces a new database linking nanomaterial stressors to the first known MIE or KE. Second, it presents a reproducible workflow to analyze and summarize this knowledge. Third, this work extends the use of semantic web technologies to the field of nanoinformatics and nanosafety.

Shedding light on the use of graphene oxide-thiosemicarbazone hybrids towards the rapid immobilisation of methylene blue and functional coumarins

Coumarins, methylene blue derivatives, as well as related functional organic dyes have become prevalent tools in life sciences and biomedicine. Their intense blue fluorescence emission makes them ideal agents for a range of applications, yet an unwanted facet of the interesting biological properties of such probes presents a simultaneous environmental threat due to inherent toxicity and persistence in aqueous media. As such, significant research efforts now ought to focus on their removal from the environment, and the sustainable trapping onto widely available, water dispersible and processable adsorbent structures such as graphene oxides could be advantageous. Additionally, flat and aromatic bis(thiosemicarbazones) (BTSCs) have shown biocompatibility and chemotherapeutic potential, as well as intrinsic fluorescence, hence traceability in the environment and in living systems. A new palette of graphene oxide-based hierarchical supramolecular materials incorporating BTSCs were prepared, characterised, and reported hereby. We report on the supramolecular entrapping of several flat, aromatic fluorogenic molecules onto graphene oxide on basis of non-covalent interactions, by virtue of their structural features with potential to form aromatic stacks and H-bonds. The evaluations of the binding interactions in solution by between organic dyes (methylene blue and functional coumarins) and new graphene oxide-anchored Zn(ii) derivatised bis(thiosemicarbazones) nanohybrids were carried out by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Graphene (GNP) reinforced 3D printing nanocomposites: An advanced structural perspective

The influence of macro-micro structural design on the mechanical response of structural nanocomposites is substantial. The advancement of additive manufacturing especially three-dimensional (3-D) printing technology offers a promising avenue for the efficient and precise fabrication of multi-functional low-weight and high-strength nanocomposites. In contemporary discourse, there is a notable emphasis on carbon-based nanomaterials as nanofillers for structural composites due to their substantial specific surface area and exceptional load-bearing ability in mechanical structures. Notably, graphene, a distinctive two-dimensional (2-D) nanomaterial, exhibits very large elastic modulus and ultimate strength as well as remarkable plasticity. The utilization of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) in the field of 3-D printing enables the production of intricate three-dimensional structures of varying sizes and configurations. This is achieved through the macro-assembly process, which facilitates the creation of a well-organized distribution of graphene and the establishment of a comprehensive physical network through precise micro-regulation. This paper presents an overview of multiscale structural composites that are strengthened by the incorporation of graphene and prepared by 3-D printing. The composites discussed in this study encompass graphene-polymer composites, graphene-ceramic composites, and graphene-metal composites. Furthermore, an analysis of the present obstacles and potential future advancements in this rapidly expanding domain is anticipated.

Synergistic Applications of Graphene-Based Materials and Deep Eutectic Solvents in Sustainable Sensing: A Comprehensive Review

The recently explored synergistic combination of graphene-based materials and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is opening novel and effective avenues for developing sensing devices with optimized features. In more detail, remarkable potential in terms of simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of this combination have been demonstrated for sensors, resulting in the creation of hybrid devices with enhanced signal-to-noise ratios, linearities, and selectivity. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the currently available scientific literature discussing investigations and applications of sensors that integrate graphene-based materials and deep eutectic solvents, with an outlook for the most promising developments of this approach.

Advances in the application of logic gates in nanozymes

Nanozymes are a class of nanomaterials with biocatalytic function and enzyme-like activity, whose advantages include high stability, low cost, and mass production. They can catalyze the substrates of natural enzymes based on specific nanostructures and serve as substitutes for natural enzymes. Their applied research involves a wide range of fields such as biomedicine, environmental governance, agriculture, and food. Molecular logic gates are a new cross-disciplinary discipline, which can simulate the function of silicon circuits on a molecular scale, perform single or multiple input logic operations, and generate logic outputs. A molecular logic gate is a binary operation that converts an input signal into an output signal according to the rules of Boolean logic, generating two signals, a high level, and a low level. The high and low levels represent the "true" and "false" values of the logic gates, and their outputs correspond to "l" and "0" of the molecular logic gates, respectively. The combination of nanozymes and logic gates is a novel and attractive research direction, and the cross-application of the two brings new opportunities and ideas for various fields, such as the construction of efficient biocomputers, intelligent drug delivery systems, and the precise diagnosis of diseases. This review describes the application of logic gates based on nanozymes, which is expected to provide a certain theoretical foundation for researchers' subsequent studies.

A high loading nanocarrier for the 5-fluorouracil anticancer drug based on chloromethylated graphene

In the present work, we report a facile and simple strategy to functionalize graphene with the chloromethyl (CH2Cl) functional group as a nanoplatform for effectual loading of the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug. To achieve the highest loading capacity, hydrochloric acid concentration, the quantity of paraformaldehyde, ultrasonic treatment time, and stirring duration were all carefully optimized. The results revealed that the optimum conditions for functionalizing graphene were obtained at 70 mL of hydrochloric acid, 700 mg of paraformaldehyde, and times of 35 min and 2 h of ultrasonication and stirring. Later, the drug (5-FU) was loaded onto CH2Cl-functionalized graphene through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The chemical structure of the functionalized material and the loading of the 5-FU drug were confirmed by FTIR analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The 5-FU loading capacity of as-prepared materials was determined using the ion chromatography instrument. Our findings demonstrate that chloromethylated graphene is a very excellent nano-platform for high-efficiency drug loading, yielding a loading capacity of 52.3%, comparatively higher than pure graphene (36.54%).

Unveiling the contemporary progress of graphene-based nanomaterials with a particular focus on the removal of contaminants from water: a comprehensive review

This review will delve into the synthesis methods employed for graphene-based nanomaterials and explore the structural modifications and functionalization strategies implemented to increase their pollutant removal performance in water treatment. The exploration of interdisciplinary approaches and cutting-edge technologies underscores the evolving landscape of graphene-based water treatment, fostering a path toward sustainable and scalable solutions. Fabrication of magnetic nanocomposite scaffolds based on polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan containing hydroxyapatite and clay modified with graphene oxide: Evaluation of their properties for bone tissue engineering applications

One of the most common systems for bone tissue engineering is polymeric scaffolds. However, the low mechanical properties of polymeric scaffolds, considering the properties required for bone replacement tissue, are the main challenge for researchers in this field. For bone tissue engineering, this research prepared nanocomposite scaffolds based on polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan containing modified clay and hydroxyapatite (HAp). HAp used in these 3D scaffolds was synthesized from a chicken femur, and Cloisite 30B clay nanoparticles were modified by graphene oxide and Fe3O4 nanoparticles to strengthen their mechanical properties. Sample characteristics were determined using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, swelling rate, laboratory degradation, and biological and mechanical properties. These analyses showed that 2% of modified clay (C30B/GO/Fe3O4, CGF) inside the nanocomposite scaffold increased the compressive strength 23 times compared to the pristine polymer scaffold. Also, adding HAp particles and modified clay simultaneously increased the mineralization on the surface of the scaffolds. Final nanocomposite scaffolds were found to have a compressive strength of 9.31 MPa, a porosity of 75 %, and a porosity size of 50 nm and were in the range of cancellous bone. The final swelling amount is 1790 %, which is the amount that is Favorable for bone scaffold. Finally, the analysis results to determine the samples' toxicity showed that none of the prepared scaffolds were toxic and showed good cell viability.

Naringin and graphene oxide incorporated Moringa oleifera gum/poly(vinyl) alcohol patch for enhanced wound healing

Patients and healthcare systems stand to gain much from the use of substances that can accelerate wound healing. In this research work, a polymeric patch was fabricated using polymers like poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Moringa oleifera gum (MO) incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) and naringin (Nar) (drug). This study determined the impact of using PVA/MO/GO/Nar polymeric patch on wound healing via in vitro and in vivo investigations. Graphene oxide was synthesized by modified Hummer's method. The synthesized sample was characterized using XRD, FT-IR, RAMAN Spectroscopy, FESEM and HRTEM. Antibacterial analysis of the GO on four different bacteria was studied through well diffusion, colony count, growth curve and biofilm assay. Biocompatibility was analysed by haemolysis assay. The morphology, antibacterial activity, haemolysis assay, swelling, degradation, porosity, water vapour transmission rate, drug release, blood pump model, in-vitro scratch assay and MTT assay were analysed for the fabricated polymeric patches under in-vitro condition. The PVA/MO/GO/Nar patch has shown enhanced wound healing in in-vivo wound healing experiments on albino Wistar rats.

Biomedical applications of natural and synthetic polymer based nanocomposites

Various nanomaterials have been studied for their biomedical application in recent years. Among them, nanocomposites have a prominent medical application in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases. Nanocomposites are made up of polymeric matrix layers composed of synthetic or natural polymers like chitosan, polyethylene glycol, etc. Polymer nanocomposites are inorganic nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer matrix. There are two types of polymeric nanocomposites which include natural and synthetic polymer nanocomposites. These nanocomposites have various biomedical applications, such as medical implants, wound healing, wound dressing, bone repair and replacement, and dental filling. Polymeric nanocomposites have a wide range of biomedical applications due to their high stability, non-immunogenic nature, sustained drug delivery, non-toxic, and can escape reticuloendothelial system uptake along with drug bioavailability improvement. In this review, we have discussed various types of natural and synthetic polymer nanocomposites and their biomedical applications.

Co-biopolymer of chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel improved by zinc oxide and graphene quantum dots nanoparticles as pH-sensitive nanocomposite for quercetin delivery to brain cancer treatment

Brain cancer is the major reason of cancer-relevant deaths every year, as it is the most challenging cancer to treat and drug delivery. Quercetin (QUR), as a flavonoid substance found in plants and fruits, has good anticancer and medicinal effects on brain tumors, but its low stability and bioavailability as well as the blood-brain barrier (BBB), prevent it from reaching brain tumors. This research has introduced a nanocomposite made of biocompatible polymers, chitosan, and carboxymethyl cellulose. This co- biopolymer's mechanical and chemical properties and drug-loading capacity have been improved by adding zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). In addition, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were used to improve the chemical properties as well as the ability to penetrate the BBB. The CS/CMC/GQDs/ZnO@QUR nanocomposites have nanoneedle structures with an average size of 219.38 ± 5.21 nm and a zeta potential of -53 mV. The morphology, chemical bonds, and crystallinity of the nanocomposite were examined by FE-SEM, FTIR, and XRD analyses, respectively. By examining the release of QUR, it became apparent that the half-drug release takes about 72 h, which has a much more controlled release than other QUR carriers. Further, the MTT test on U-87 MG and L929 cell lines suggested that this nanocomposite has good anticancer properties and low cytotoxicity compared to the free QUR.

A study on the therapeutic potential of graphene titanate nanocomposite for treating chemically induced arthritis in rats

Nanotechnology holds substantial promise in the innovative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The current study was designed to synthesize and characterize a new graphene titanate nanocomposite (GTNc) and explore its anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant potencies against Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis in rats, as well as investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Our characterization methods included XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, zeta potential, practical size, and XRF to characterize the novel GTNc. Our findings revealed that arthritic rats treated with GTNc exhibited lower levels of RF, CRP, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-17, and ADAMTS-5, and higher levels of IL-4 and TIMP-3. In arthritic rats, GTNc reduced LPO levels while increasing GSH content and GST antioxidant activity. Additionally, GTNc decreased the expression of the TGF-β mRNA gene in arthritic rats. Histopathological investigation showed that GTNc reduced inflammatory cell infiltration, cartilage degradation, and bone destruction in joint injuries caused by CFA in the arthritic rats. Collectively, the anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of GTNc appear promising for future arthritis treatments and bone disability research.

Electroconductivity, a regenerative engineering approach to reverse rotator cuff muscle degeneration

Muscle degeneration is one the main factors that lead to the high rate of retear after a successful repair of rotator cuff (RC) tears. The current surgical practices have failed to treat patients with chronic massive rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Therefore, regenerative engineering approaches are being studied to address the challenges. Recent studies showed the promising outcomes of electroactive materials (EAMs) on the regeneration of electrically excitable tissues such as skeletal muscle. Here, we review the most important biological mechanism of RC muscle degeneration. Further, the review covers the recent studies on EAMs for muscle regeneration including RC muscle. Finally, we will discuss the future direction toward the application of EAMs for the augmentation of RCTs.

Reduced graphene oxide coated alginate scaffolds: potential for cardiac patch application

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular diseases, particularly myocardial infarction (MI), are the leading cause of death worldwide and a major contributor to disability. Cardiac tissue engineering is a promising approach for preventing functional damage or improving cardiac function after MI. We aimed to introduce a novel electroactive cardiac patch based on reduced graphene oxide-coated alginate scaffolds due to the promising functional behavior of electroactive biomaterials to regulate cell proliferation, biocompatibility, and signal transition.

METHODS

The fabrication of novel electroactive cardiac patches based on alginate (ALG) coated with different concentrations of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using sodium hydrosulfite is described here. The prepared scaffolds were thoroughly tested for their physicochemical properties and cytocompatibility. ALG-rGO scaffolds were also tested for their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Subcutaneous implantation in mice was used to evaluate the scaffolds' ability to induce angiogenesis.

RESULTS

The Young modulus of the scaffolds was increased by increasing the rGO concentration from 92 ± 4.51 kPa for ALG to 431 ± 4.89 kPa for ALG-rGO-4 (ALG coated with 0.3% w/v rGO). The scaffolds' tensile strength trended similarly. The electrical conductivity of coated scaffolds was calculated in the semi-conductive range (~ 10-4 S/m). Furthermore, when compared to ALG scaffolds, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured on ALG-rGO scaffolds demonstrated improved cell viability and adhesion. Upregulation of VEGFR2 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels confirmed that rGO coating significantly boosted the angiogenic capability of ALG against HUVECs. OD620 assay and FE-SEM observation demonstrated the antibacterial properties of electroactive scaffolds against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. We also showed that the prepared samples possessed antioxidant activity using a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay and UV-vis spectroscopy. Histological evaluations confirmed the enhanced vascularization properties of coated samples after subcutaneous implantation.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that ALG-rGO is a promising scaffold for accelerating the repair of damaged heart tissue.

Label-free detection and mapping of graphene oxide in single HeLa cells based on MCR-Raman spectroscopy

GO is a 2D nanomaterial that has attracted attention in many industries in recent years, such as the chemical industry, electronics or medicine. Due to its unique properties such as strength, hydrophilicity and large specific surface area with the possibility of functionalization, GO is a particularly attractive material in biomedicine as a candidate for use in targeted drug delivery. In such a case, we need information on whether graphene oxide penetrates into cells and whether we are able to detect and monitor GO in these cells during and also after the treatment to evaluate possible degradation process of GO and its interaction within the cell compartements. This work introduces the Raman spectroscopy as label-free detection method showing the advantages of combining Raman spectroscopy with MCR (Multivariate Curve Resolution) analysis for advanced detection of GO in cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. Our synthesized GO is characterized firstly by AFM, SEM and Raman spectroscopy and then MCR-Raman spectroscopy is used to detect internalized GO in individual HeLa cells. Moreover, by using our methodology, distribution of GO as well as its chemical stability inside the cell for up to six months is investigated without using any additional labeling or tracing the GO. Thus, MCR-Raman spectroscopy may become a new analytical tool in preclinical and clinical applications of graphene-based nanotheranostics.

Nanotechnology in coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries and among older populations. Conventional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have limitations such as low sensitivity, high cost and side effects. Nanotechnology offers promising alternative strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of CHD by exploiting the unique properties of nanomaterials. In this review, we use bibliometric analysis to identify research hotspots in the application of nanotechnology in CHD and provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art. Nanomaterials with enhanced imaging and biosensing capabilities can improve the early detection of CHD through advanced contrast agents and high-resolution imaging techniques. Moreover, nanomaterials can facilitate targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering and modulation of inflammation and oxidative stress, thus addressing multiple aspects of CHD pathophysiology. We discuss the application of nanotechnology in CHD diagnosis (imaging and sensors) and treatment (regulation of macrophages, cardiac repair, anti-oxidative stress), and provide insights into future research directions and clinical translation. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians seeking to harness the potential of nanotechnology in the management of CHD. Nanotechnology-Based Strategies for Extended-Release Delivery of Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs): A Comprehensive Review

There has been a significant shift in the perception of hypertension as an important contributor to the global disease burden. Approximately 6 % and 8 % of pregnancies are affected by hypertension, which can adversely affect the mother and the fetus. Furthermore, a hypertensive individual is at increased risk of developing kidney disease, arterial hardening, eye damage, and strokes. Using angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) is widespread in treating hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and diabetic nephropathy. Despite this, some ARBs have limited use due to their poor oral bioavailability and water solubility. To tackle this, a variety of nanoparticle (NP)-based systems, such as polymeric NPs (i. e., dendrimers), polymeric micelles, polymer-drug conjugates, lipid NPs, nanoemulsions, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS), solid lipid NPs (SLNs), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), carbon-based nanocarriers, inorganic NPs, and nanocrystals, have been recently developed for efficient delivery of losartan, Valsartan (Val), Olmesartan (OLM), Telmisartan (TEL), Candesartan, Eprosartan, Irbesartan, and Azilsartan to target cells. This review article provides a literature-based comparison of the various classes of ARBs, their mechanisms of action, and an overview of the nanoformulations developed for ARB delivery and successfully applied to managing hypertension, diabetic complications, and other conditions.

Graphene- and MXene-based materials for neuroscience: diagnostic and therapeutic applications

MXenes and graphene are two-dimensional materials that have gained increasing attention in neuroscience, particularly in sensing, theranostics, and biomedical engineering. Various composites of graphene and MXenes with fascinating thermal, optical, magnetic, mechanical, and electrical properties have been introduced to develop advanced nanosystems for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, as exemplified in the case of biosensors for neurotransmitter detection. These biosensors display high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, making them promising tools for neuroscience research. MXenes have been employed to create high-resolution neural interfaces for neuroelectronic devices, develop neuro-receptor-mediated synapse devices, and stimulate the electrophysiological maturation of neural circuits. On the other hand, graphene/derivatives exhibit therapeutic applicability in neuroscience, as exemplified in the case of graphene oxide for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents to the brain. While MXenes and graphene have potential benefits in neuroscience, there are also challenges/limitations associated with their use, such as toxicity, environmental impacts, and limited understanding of their properties. In addition, large-scale production and commercialization as well as optimization of reaction/synthesis conditions and clinical translation studies are very important aspects. Thus, it is important to consider the use of these materials in neuroscience research and conduct further research to obtain an in-depth understanding of their properties and potential applications. By addressing issues related to biocompatibility, long-term stability, targeted delivery, electrical interfaces, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, MXenes and graphene have the potential to greatly advance the field of neuroscience and pave the way for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neurological disorders. Herein, recent advances in therapeutic and diagnostic applications of graphene- and MXene-based materials in neuroscience are discussed, focusing on important challenges and future prospects.

Polycaprolactone/graphene oxide/acellular matrix nanofibrous scaffolds with antioxidant and promyelinating features for the treatment of peripheral demyelinating diseases

Peripheral demyelinating diseases entail damage to axons and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Because of poor prognosis and lack of a cure, this group of diseases has a global impact. The primary underlying cause of these diseases involves the inability of Schwann cells to remyelinate the damaged insulating myelin around axons, resulting in neuronal death over time. In the past decade, extensive research has been directed in the direction of Schwann cells focusing on their physiological and neuroprotective effects on the neurons in the peripheral nervous system. One cause of dysregulation in the remyelinating function of Schwann cells has been associated with oxidative stress. Tissue-engineered biodegradable scaffolds that can stimulate remyelination response in Schwann cells have been proposed as a potential treatment strategy for peripheral demyelinating diseases. However, strategies developed to date primarily focussed on either remyelination or oxidative stress in isolation. Here, we have developed a multifunctional nanofibrous scaffold with material and biochemical cues to tackle both remyelination and oxidative stress in one matrix. We developed a nanofibrous scaffold using polycaprolactone (PCL) as a foundation loaded with antioxidant graphene oxide (GO) and coated this bioscaffold with Schwann cell acellular matrix. In vitro studies revealed both antioxidant and remyelination properties of the developed bioscaffold. Based on the results, the developed multifunctional bioscaffold approach can be a promising biomaterial approach for treating demyelinating diseases.

The anti-adherence activity and bactericidal effect of GO against Streptococcus mutans from Iraqi dental patients

The high rate of microbes and their biological activity in the patient's mouth is a concern in the domains of dental caries and periodontal disease. The study aimed to shed light on the relationship between graphene oxide's nanoparticles (nGOs) antimicrobial properties and the growth of dental pathogenic bacteria. The forty swab samples were frequently collected from the patient's cavity mouth between November 2019 and January 2020, from patients who visited dentist clinics in Baghdad by taking swabs from mouth cavities with various dental caries with two age groups (5-17) and (18-60) from male and female to streaking them on Brain-Heart Infusion (BHI) agar, then identified by re-streaking on Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin (MSB) agar. All isolates were confirmed as Streptococcus mutans after API 20 Strep method. As well as the Colony Forming Units (CFU) were then determined after diluting the bacterial cell suspensions to obtain cell samples containing 1.5 × 108 CFU/ ml. The collagen-binding adhesin (cnm) and glucosyltransferases (gtf) of S. mutans genes were identified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method before and after exposure to the nGOs, which were prepared in different pulse laser energy (500, 600, and 700 mJ) with presence and absence of the magnetic field, and the data have been analyzing. After counting the CFU, the nGOs shows high effectiveness inhibiting the growth of S. mutans. This research provides definitive answers about the relationship between nGOs, antibacterial caries, and periodontal disease.

Polymeric graphene oxide nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin for combined photothermal and chemotherapy in triple negative breast cancer

Combining photothermal and chemotherapy is an emerging strategy for tumor irradiation in a minimally invasive manner, utilizing photothermal transduction agents and anticancer drugs. The present work developed a 2D carbon nanomaterial graphene oxide (GO)-based nanoplatform that converted to 3D colloidal spherical structures upon functionalization with an amphiphilic polymer mPEG-PLA (1, 0.5/1/2) and entrapped doxorubicin (Dox) physically. The Dox@GO(mPP) (1/0.5) NPs displayed the least particle size (161 nm), the highest stability with no aggregation, the highest Dox loading (6.3 %) and encapsulation efficiency (70 %). The therapeutic efficacy was determined in vitro and in vivo using murine (4 T1) and human triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), and 4 T1-Luc-tumor bearing mouse models. The results demonstrated that the Dox@GO(mPP) (1/0.5) NPs treatment with laser (+L) (808 nm) was highly efficient in inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest (G2/M) phase, significant cytotoxicity, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, ROS generation, and photothermal effect leading to a higher proportion of cell death than free Dox, and Dox@GO(mPP) (1/0.5) NPs (-L). The anticancer studies in mice harboring the 4 T1-Luc tumor showed that combination of Dox@GO(mPP) (1/0.5) NPs (+L) effectively reduced tumor development and decreased lung metastasis. The developed nanoplatform could be a promising combination chemo-photothermal treatment option for triple-negative breast cancer.

Using Thermomechanical Properties to Reassess Particles' Dispersion in Nanostructured Polymers: Size vs. Content

Nanoparticle-filled polymers (i.e., nanocomposites) can exhibit characteristics unattainable by the unfilled polymer, making them attractive to engineer structural composites. However, the transition of particulate fillers from the micron to the nanoscale requires a comprehensive understanding of how particle downsizing influences molecular interactions and organization across multiple length scales, ranging from chemical bonding to microstructural evolution. This work outlines the advancements described in the literature that have become relevant and have shaped today's understanding of the processing-structure-property relationships in polymer nanocomposites. The main inorganic and organic particles that have been incorporated into polymers are examined first. The commonly practiced methods for nanoparticle incorporation are then highlighted. The development in mechanical properties-such as tensile strength, storage modulus and glass transition temperature-in the selected epoxy matrix nanocomposites described in the literature was specifically reviewed and discussed. The significant effect of particle content, dispersion, size, and mean free path on thermomechanical properties, commonly expressed as a function of weight percentage (wt.%) of added particles, was found to be better explained as a function of particle crowding (number of particles and distance among them). From this work, it was possible to conclude that the dramatic effect of particle size for the same tiny amount of very small and well-dispersed particles brings evidence that particle size and the particle weight content should be downscaled together.

Engineering nanoparticle toolkits for mRNA delivery

The concept of using mRNA to produce its own medicine in situ in the body makes it an ideal drug candidate, holding great potential to revolutionize the way we approach medicine. The unique characteristics of mRNA, as well as its customizable biomedical functions, call for the rational design of delivery systems to protect and transport mRNA molecules. In this review, a nanoparticle toolkit is presented for the development of mRNA-based therapeutics from a drug delivery perspective. Nano-delivery systems derived from either natural systems or chemical synthesis, in the nature of organic or inorganic materials, are summarised. Delivery strategies in controlling the tissue targeting and mRNA release, as well as the role of nanoparticles in building and boosting the activity of mRNA drugs, have also been introduced. In the end, our insights into the clinical and translational development of mRNA nano-drugs are presented.

Novel Electroactive Mineralized Polyacrylonitrile/PEDOT:PSS Electrospun Nanofibers for Bone Repair Applications

Bone defect repair remains a critical challenge in current orthopedic clinical practice, as the available therapeutic strategies only offer suboptimal outcomes. Therefore, bone tissue engineering (BTE) approaches, involving the development of biomimetic implantable scaffolds combined with osteoprogenitor cells and native-like physical stimuli, are gaining widespread interest. Electrical stimulation (ES)-based therapies have been found to actively promote bone growth and osteogenesis in both in vivo and in vitro settings. Thus, the combination of electroactive scaffolds comprising conductive biomaterials and ES holds significant promise in improving the effectiveness of BTE for clinical applications. The aim of this study was to develop electroconductive polyacrylonitrile/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PAN/PEDOT:PSS) nanofibers via electrospinning, which are capable of emulating the native tissue's fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM) and providing a platform for the delivery of exogenous ES. The resulting nanofibers were successfully functionalized with apatite-like structures to mimic the inorganic phase of the bone ECM. The conductive electrospun scaffolds presented nanoscale fiber diameters akin to those of collagen fibrils and displayed bone-like conductivity. PEDOT:PSS incorporation was shown to significantly promote scaffold mineralization in vitro. The mineralized electroconductive nanofibers demonstrated improved biological performance as observed by the significantly enhanced proliferation of both human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (hBM-MSCs). Moreover, mineralized PAN/PEDOT:PSS nanofibers up-regulated bone marker genes expression levels of hBM-MSCs undergoing osteogenic differentiation, highlighting their potential as electroactive biomimetic BTE scaffolds for innovative bone defect repair strategies.

Translation of nanotechnology-based implants for orthopedic applications: current barriers and future perspective

The objective of bioimplant engineering is to develop biologically compatible materials for restoring, preserving, or altering damaged tissues and/or organ functions. The variety of substances used for orthopedic implant applications has been substantially influenced by modern material technology. Therefore, nanomaterials can mimic the surface properties of normal tissues, including surface chemistry, topography, energy, and wettability. Moreover, the new characteristics of nanomaterials promote their application in sustaining the progression of many tissues. The current review establishes a basis for nanotechnology-driven biomaterials by demonstrating the fundamental design problems that influence the success or failure of an orthopedic graft, cell adhesion, proliferation, antimicrobial/antibacterial activity, and differentiation. In this context, extensive research has been conducted on the nano-functionalization of biomaterial surfaces to enhance cell adhesion, differentiation, propagation, and implant population with potent antimicrobial activity. The possible nanomaterials applications (in terms of a functional nanocoating or a nanostructured surface) may resolve a variety of issues (such as bacterial adhesion and corrosion) associated with conventional metallic or non-metallic grafts, primarily for optimizing implant procedures. Future developments in orthopedic biomaterials, such as smart biomaterials, porous structures, and 3D implants, show promise for achieving the necessary characteristics and shape of a stimuli-responsive implant. Ultimately, the major barriers to the commercialization of nanotechnology-derived biomaterials are addressed to help overcome the limitations of current orthopedic biomaterials in terms of critical fundamental factors including cost of therapy, quality, pain relief, and implant life. Despite the recent success of nanotechnology, there are significant hurdles that must be overcome before nanomedicine may be applied to orthopedics. The objective of this review was to provide a thorough examination of recent advancements, their commercialization prospects, as well as the challenges and potential perspectives associated with them. This review aims to assist healthcare providers and researchers in extracting relevant data to develop translational research within the field. In addition, it will assist the readers in comprehending the scope and gaps of nanomedicine's applicability in the orthopedics field.

Enhanced growth and differentiation of neural stem cells on alginate/collagen/reduced graphene oxide composite hydrogel incorporated with lithium chloride

Introduction

Cell transplantation with hydrogel-based carriers is one of the advanced therapeutics for challenging diseases, such as spinal cord injury. Electrically conductive hydrogel has received much attention for its effect on nerve outgrowth and differentiation. Besides, a load of neuroprotective substances, such as lithium chloride can promote the differentiation properties of the hydrogel.

Methods

In this study, alginate/collagen/reduced graphene oxide hydrogel loaded with lithium chloride (AL/CO/rGO Li+) was prepared as an injectable cell delivery system for neural tissue regeneration. After determining the lithium-ion release profile, an MTT assay was performed to check neural viability. In the next step, real-time PCR was performed to evaluate the expression of cell adhesion and neurogenic markers.

Results

Our results showed that the combination of collagen fibers and rGO with alginates increased cell viability and the gene expression of collagen-binding receptor subunits such as integrin α1, and β1. Further, rGO contributed to the controlled release of lithium-ion hydrogel in terms of its plenty of negatively charged functional groups. The continuous culture of NSCs on AL/CO/rGO Li+ hydrogel increased neurogenic genes' expressions of nestin (5.9 fold), NF200 (36.8 fold), and synaptophysin (13.2 fold), as well as protein expression of NF200 and synaptophysin after about 14 days.

Conclusion

The simultaneous ability of electrical conduction and lithium-ion release of AL/CO/rGO Li+ hydrogel could provide a favorable microenvironment for NSCs by improving their survival, maintaining cell morphology, and expressing the neural marker. It may be potentially used as a therapeutic approach for stem cell transplantation in a spinal cord injury.

Accelerated Healing of Infected Diabetic Wounds by a Dual-Layered Adhesive Film Cored with Microsphere-Loaded Hydrogel Composite Dressing

Diabetic wounds, a prevalent chronic disease, are associated with older age. The hyperglycemic microenvironment in diabetic wounds significantly reduces the immune system, inducing bacterial invasion. The coupling of tissue repair and antibacterial treatment is critical for infected diabetic ulcer regeneration. In this study, a dual-layered sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan (SA/CMCS) adhesive film cored with an SA-bFGF microsphere-loaded small intestine submucosa (SIS) hydrogel composite dressing with a graphene oxide (GO)-based antisense transformation system was developed to promote infected diabetic wound healing and bacterial eradication. Initially, our injectable SIS-based hydrogel composite stimulated angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and immunoregulation in diabetic wound repair. The GO-based transformation system subsequently inhibited bacterial viability in infected wounds by post-transformation regulation. Meanwhile, the SA/CMCS film provided stable adhesion covering the wound area to maintain a moist microenvironment, which promoted in situ tissue repair. Our findings provide a promising clinical translation strategy for promoting the healing of infected diabetic wounds.

Advances in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Latex Particles via In Situ Emulsion Polymerization

Hybrid latex particles combine the unique properties of inorganic nano/micro particles with the inherent properties of polymers, exhibiting tremendous potential for a variety of applications. Recent years have witnessed an increased interest in the design and preparation of hybrid latex particles with well-defined size, structure and morphology. Due to its simplicity, versatility and environmental friendliness, the in situ (Pickering) emulsion polymerization has been demonstrated to be a powerful approach for the large-scale preparation of hybrid latex particles. In this review, the strategies and applications of in situ (Pickering) emulsion polymerization for the preparation of hybrid latex particles are systematically summarized. A particular focus is placed on the strategies for the preparation of hybrid latex particles with enhanced properties and well-defined core-shell, yolk-shell, multinuclear, raspberry-like, dumbbell-shaped, multipod-like or armored morphologies. We hope that the considerable advances, examples and principles presented in this review can motivate future contributions to provide a deeper understanding of current preparation technologies, develop new processes, and enable further exploitation of hybrid latex particles with outstanding characteristics and properties.

Biocompatible polysaccharide fabricated graphene oxide nanoparticles: A versatile nanodrug carrier to deliver κ- carrageenan against cancer cells

A graphene oxide mediated hybrid nano system for pH stimuli-responsive and in vitro drug delivery targeted for cancer was described in this study. Graphene oxide (GO) functionalized Chitosan (CS) mediated nanocarrier capped with xyloglucan (XG) was fabricated with and without Kappa carrageenan (κ-C) from red seaweed, Kappaphycus alverzii, as an active drug. FTIR, EDAX, XPS, XRD, SEM and HR-TEM studies were carried out for GO-CS-XG nanocarrier loaded with and without active drugs to understand the physicochemical properties. XPS (C1s, N1s and O1s) confirmed the fabrications of XG and functionalization of GO by CS via the binding energies at 284.2 eV, 399.4 eV and 531.3 eV, respectively. The amount of drug loaded in vitro was 0.422 mg/mL. The GO-CS-XG nanocarrier showed a cumulative drug release of 77 % at acidic pH 5.3. In contrast to physiological conditions, the release rate of κ-C from the GO-CS-XG nanocarrier was considerably higher in the acidic condition. Thus, a pH stimuli-responsive anticancer drug release was successfully achieved with the GO-CS-XG-κ-C nanocarrier system for the first time. The drug release mechanism was carried out using various kinetic models that showed a mixed release behavior depending on concentration and diffusion/swelling mechanism. The best-fitting model which supports our release mechanism are zero order, first order and Higuchi models. GO-CS-XG and κ-C loaded nanocarrier biocompatibility were determined by in vitro hemolysis and membrane stabilization studies. MCF-7 and U937 cancer cell lines were used to study the cytotoxicity of the nanocarrier by MTT assay, which indicates excellent cytocompatibility. These findings support the versatile use of a green renewable biocompatible GO-CS-XG nanocarrier as targeted drug delivery and potential anticancer agent for therapeutic purposes.

Ab initio study of water anchored in graphene pristine and vacancy-type defects

CONTEXT

In this paper, we have addressed two issues that are relevant to the interaction of water in pristine and vacant graphene through first-principles calculations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The results showed that for the interaction of pristine graphene with water, the DOWN configuration (with the hydrogen atoms facing downwards) was the most stable, presenting binding energies in the order of -13.62 kJ/mol at a distance of 2.375 Å in the TOP position. We also evaluated the interaction of water with two vacancy models, removing one carbon atom (Vac-1C) and four atoms (Vac-4C). In the Vac-1C system, the most favourable system was the DOWN configuration, with binding energies ranging from -20.60 kJ/mol to -18.41 kJ/mol in the TOP and UP positions, respectively. A different behaviour was observed for the interaction of water with Vac-4C; regardless of the configuration of the water, it is always more favourable for the interaction to occur through the vacancy centre, with binding energies ​​between -13.28 kJ/mol and -20.49 kJ/mol. Thus, the results presented open perspectives for the technological development of nanomembranes as well as providing a better understanding of the wettability effects of graphene sheets, whether pristine or with defects.

METHOD

We evaluated the interaction of pristine and vacant graphene with the water molecule, through calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT); implemented by the SIESTA program. The electronic, energetic, and structural properties were analyzed by solving self-consistent Kohn-Sham equations. In all calculations, a double ζ plus a polarized function (DZP) was used for the numerical baise set. Local Density Approximation (LDA) with the Perdew and Zunger (PZ) parameterisation along with a basis set superposition error (BSSE) correction were used to describe the exchange and correlation potential (Vxc). The water and isolated graphene structures were relaxed until the residual forces were less than 0.05 eV/Å^-1 in all atomic coordinates.

Nanomaterial-Based Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications: A Review on Graphene, Carbon Nanotubes and Nanocellulose

Nanoscale biomaterials have garnered immense interest in the scientific community in the recent decade. This review specifically focuses on the application of three nanomaterials, i.e., graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanocellulose (cellulose nanocrystals or CNCs and cellulose nanofibers or CNFs), in regenerating different types of tissues, including skin, cartilage, nerve, muscle and bone. Their excellent inherent (and tunable) physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical properties make them suitable for a wide range of biomedical applications, including but not limited to diagnostics, therapeutics, biosensing, bioimaging, drug and gene delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. A state-of-the-art literature review of composite tissue scaffolds fabricated using these nanomaterials is provided, including the unique physicochemical properties and mechanisms that induce cell adhesion, growth, and differentiation into specific tissues. In addition, in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic effects and biodegradation behavior of these nanomaterials are presented. We also discuss challenges and gaps that still exist and need to be addressed in future research before clinical translation of these promising nanomaterials can be realized in a safe, efficacious, and economical manner.

Prospective applications of two-dimensional materials beyond laboratory frontiers: A review

The development of nanotechnology has been advancing for decades and gained acceleration in the 21st century. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely available, giving them a wide range of material platforms for technological study and the advancement of atomic-level applications. The design and application of 2D materials are discussed in this review. In order to evaluate the performance of 2D materials, which might lead to greater applications benefiting the electrical and electronics sectors as well as society, the future paradigm of 2D materials needs to be visualized. The development of 2D hybrid materials with better characteristics that will help industry and society at large is anticipated to result from intensive research in 2D materials. This enhanced evaluation might open new opportunities for the synthesis of 2D materials and the creation of devices that are more effective than traditional ones in various sectors of application.

Recent advances in modification of novel carbon-based composites: Synthesis, properties, and biotechnological/ biomedical applications

Nowadays, carbon-based materials owing to great interest in biomedical science/biotechnology and applied for effective diagnosis and treatment of disease. To enhance the effectiveness of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/graphene-based materials for bio-medical science/technology applications, different kinds of surface modification/functionalization were developed for the attachment of metal oxides nanostructures, biomolecules and polymers. The attachment of pharmaceutical agents with CNTs/graphene, make it a favorable candidate in research field of bio-medical science/technology applications. Surface modified/functionalized CNTs and graphene derivatives materials integrated with pharmaceutical agents has been developed for the purpose of cancer therapy, antibacterial action, pathogens bio detection, drug and gene delivery. Surface modification or functionalization of CNT/graphene materials provides good platform for pharmaceutical agents attachment with improved surface Raman scattering, fluorescence and its quenching capability. Graphene-based biosensing and bioimaging technologies are widely applied to identify numerous trace level analytes. These fluorescent and electrochemical sensors are utilized primarily for detecting organic, inorganic, and biomolecules. In this article, we highlights and summarized overview of the current research progress concerned on the CNTs/graphene-based materials as a new generation materials for detection and treatment of diseases.

Crafting two-dimensional materials for contrast agents, drug, and heat delivery applications through green technologies

The development of two-dimensional (2D) materials for biomedical applications has accelerated exponentially. Contrary to their bulk counterparts, the exceptional properties of 2D materials make them highly prospective for contrast agents for bioimage, drug, and heat delivery in biomedical treatment. Nevertheless, empty space in the integration and utilisation of 2D materials in living biological systems, potential toxicity, as well as required complicated synthesis and high-cost production limit the real application of 2D materials in those advance medical treatments. On the other hand, green technology appears to be one of strategy to shed a light on the blurred employment of 2D in medical applications, thus, with the increasing reports of green technology that promote advanced technologies, here, we compile, summarise, and synthesise information on the biomedical technology of 2D materials through green technology point of view. Beginning with a fundamental understanding, of crystal structures, the working mechanism, and novel properties, this article examines the recent development of 2D materials. As well as 2D materials made from natural and biogenic resources, a recent development in green-related synthesis was also discussed. The biotechnology and biomedical-related application constraints are also discussed. The challenges, solutions, and prospects of the so-called green 2D materials are outlined.

Recent Biomedical Applications of Coupling Nanocomposite Polymeric Materials Reinforced with Variable Carbon Nanofillers

The hybridization between polymers and carbon materials is one of the most recent and crucial study areas which abstracted more concern from scientists in the past few years. Polymers could be classified into two classes according to the source materials synthetic and natural. Synthetic polymeric materials have been applied over a floppy zone of industrial fields including the field of biomedicine. Carbon nanomaterials including (fullerene, carbon nanotubes, and graphene) classified as one of the most significant sources of hybrid materials. Nanocarbons are improving significantly mechanical properties of polymers in nanocomposites in addition to physical and chemical properties of the new materials. In all varieties of proposed bio-nanocomposites, a considerable improvement in the microbiological performance of the materials has been explored. Various polymeric materials and carbon-course nanofillers were present, along with antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer products. This review spots the light on the types of synthetic polymers-based carbon materials and presented state-of-art examples on their application in the area of biomedicine.

Graphene-Related Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications

This paper builds on the context and recent progress on the control, reproducibility, and limitations of using graphene and graphene-related materials (GRMs) in biomedical applications. The review describes the human hazard assessment of GRMs in in vitro and in vivo studies, highlights the composition-structure-activity relationships that cause toxicity for these substances, and identifies the key parameters that determine the activation of their biological effects. GRMs are designed to offer the advantage of facilitating unique biomedical applications that impact different techniques in medicine, especially in neuroscience. Due to the increasing utilization of GRMs, there is a need to comprehensively assess the potential impact of these materials on human health. Various outcomes associated with GRMs, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, beneficial effects on cell proliferation, differentiation rates, apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, oxidative stress, physical destruction, DNA damage, and inflammatory responses, have led to an increasing interest in these regenerative nanostructured materials. Considering the existence of graphene-related nanomaterials with different physicochemical properties, the materials are expected to exhibit unique modes of interactions with biomolecules, cells, and tissues depending on their size, chemical composition, and hydrophil-to-hydrophobe ratio. Understanding such interactions is crucial from two perspectives, namely, from the perspectives of their toxicity and biological uses. The main aim of this study is to assess and tune the diverse properties that must be considered when planning biomedical applications. These properties include flexibility, transparency, surface chemistry (hydrophil-hydrophobe ratio), thermoelectrical conductibility, loading and release capacity, and biocompatibility.

Fabrication and desired properties of conductive hydrogel dressings for wound healing

Conductive hydrogels are platforms recognized as constituting promising materials for tissue engineering applications. This is because such conductive hydrogels are characterized by the inherent conductivity properties while retaining favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. These conductive hydrogels can be particularly useful in enhancing wound healing since their favorable conductivity can promote the transport of essential ions for wound healing via the imposition of a so-called transepithelial potential. Other valuable properties of these conductive hydrogels, such as wound monitoring, stimuli-response etc., are also discussed in this study. Crucially, the properties of conductive hydrogels, such as 3D printability and monitoring properties, suggest the possibility of its use as an alternative wound dressing to traditional dressings such as bandages. This review, therefore, seeks to comprehensively explore the functionality of conductive hydrogels in wound healing, types of conductive hydrogels and their preparation strategies and crucial properties of hydrogels. This review will also assess the limitations of conductive hydrogels and future perspectives, with an emphasis on the development trend for conductive hydrogel uses in wound dressing fabrication for subsequent clinical applications.
