Abstract
Vulnerable carotid plaques are responsible for 20% of the ischemic strokes. The identification of these asymptomatic carotid plaques that will become symptomatic is essential but remains unclear. Our main goal was to investigate whether the amount of the peri-carotid adipose tissue, estimated by the extra-media thickness (EMT), is associated with the atherosclerotic characteristics at the carotid bifurcation in patients with PAD. An observational, prospective, single-center, longitudinal study was conducted. Overall, 177 patients were subjected to carotid Doppler ultrasound at the study admission. The following data were collected: EMT, intima-media thickness (IMT), the presence of carotid plaques, the area of the highest plaque, the presence of "acute culprit" carotid stenosis, and the grade of internal carotid stenosis. "Acute culprit" carotid stenosis was defined as a significant atherosclerotic plaque that leads to a neurologic event within 15 days. From each carotid bifurcation, a right and a left EMT were determined. We analyzed both the mean EMTs (calculated as the mean between the right and the left EMT) and the EMT ipsilateral to the carotid bifurcation. The presence of carotid plaques was associated with a higher mean EMT [Median = 1.14; IQR = 0.66 versus Median = 0.97; IQR = 0.40; p = 0.001]. A positive correlation was found between the mean EMT and IMT (right: ρ = 0.20; p = 0.010; left: ρ = 0.21; p = 0.007) and between the mean EMT and the area of the largest carotid plaque (right: ρ = 0.17; p = 0.036; left: ρ = 0.22; p = 0.004). Left carotid stenosis ≥ 70% was associated with higher ipsilateral EMT [Median = 1.56; IQR = 0.70 versus Median = 0.94; IQR = 0.42; p = 0.009]. Patients with "acute culprit" carotid stenosis had a higher ipsilateral EMT [left ipsilateral EMT: Median = 1.46; IQR = 0.63; "non-acute": Median = 0.94; IQR = 0.43; p = 0.009; right ipsilateral EMT: Median = 2.25; IQR = 0.62; "non-acute": Median = 1.00; IQR = 0.51; p = 0.015]. This difference was not found in the contra-lateral EMT. Six months after the neurologic event, EMT ipsilateral to an "acute culprit" carotid stenosis decreased (p = 0.036). The amount of peri-carotid adipose tissue, estimated with EMT, was associated with atherosclerosis at the carotid arteries. The mean EMT was associated with the features of chronic atherosclerosis lesions: the presence of carotid plaques, IMT, and the area of the highest plaque. Ipsilateral EMT was linked with "acute culprit" atherosclerotic plaque.

Abstract
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at estimating the association between perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and some of the cardiovascular risk factors. A systematic search was conducted from January 1980 up to and including 2022 to identify studies that examined the relationship between PVAT and cardiovascular risk factors as obesity and its indices, hypertension, lipids, and glucose intolerance/diabetes. The Medline and Embase databases were searched using the PubMed and Scopus. Data were extracted from 23 studies that fit the criteria. To conduct meta-analysis, we used an approximation of equating the method of correlating assessment because different authors used either Pearson or Spearman correlation. Interrelations of PVAT and body mass index were analyzed in eight studies. Most studies revealed reliable direct correlation; the results of the meta-analysis also showed a significant (P = 0.37, P < 0.01, n = 12,346) correlation. PVAT and waist circumference were analyzed in six studies. Meta-analysis on the selected sample (n = 10,947) showed a significant (r = 0.45, P < 0.01) correlation. Relationship between PVAT and hypertension was revealed in three studies. Direct correlations were found in all studies. Meta-analysis showed the reliability of the correlation dependence (r = 0.21, P < 0.01, n = 3996). PVAT and blood glucose was evaluated in three studies (n = 3689). In each study a reliable (P < 0.05) direct correlation was obtained. Meta-analysis showed a significant correlation of weak strength (r = 0.24, P < 0.01). We demonstrated significant positive correlations of PVAT with the levels of total cholesterol (r = 0.05, P < 0.01), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.13, P < 0.01), and triglycerides (r = 0.29, P < 0.01), and a negative relationship with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = -0.18, P < 0.01) in this meta-analysis. Despite some limitations, the findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed that PVAT significantly correlates with studied cardiovascular risk factors. Because PVAT presents a great interest in terms of cardiovascular remodeling and cardiovascular disease, its assessment in patients with and without cardiovascular pathology needs further research.

Abstract
Background: Whole-grain contains a range of beneficial nutrients, which are thought to play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases. However, the association between whole-grain consumption and the risk of developing carotid atherosclerosis (CA) has not been sufficiently elucidated. We, therefore, conducted this study to investigate the relationship between whole-grain consumption and CA in the general adult population. Methods: This prospective cohort study included a total of 2166 participants (19.2-84.6 years, 55.0% men) without a history of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and CA at baseline. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess whole-grain consumption. Measurements of CA include carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaque. IMT thickening is defined as: IMT ≥ 1.0 mm or a carotid bifurcation IMT ≥ 1.2 mm. Carotid plaque is defined as: distinct area protruding ≥1.5 mm into the vascular lumen of the carotid artery. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the association of whole-grain consumption with incident CA. Results: A total of 538 (341 men) first incident cases of CA occurred during 5585 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up: 4.2 years). After adjusting for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, dietary intake, individual and family history of disease, the multivariable HRs (95% CIs) for incident CA were 1.00 (reference) for <1 time per week, 1.10 (0.85, 1.43) for 1 time per week, 0.95 (0.75, 1.20) for 2-6 times per week, and 1.12 (0.80, 1.56) for ≥1 times per day, respectively (P for trend = 0.99). Similar results were observed in stratified analyses by the main covariates and sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: Our data indicate that whole-grain consumption had no significant association with the risk of CA in an adult Chinese population. In our study population, there is a low consumption of whole-grain, which may limit our ability to see an association. Further cohort studies or randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
The Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) is an indicator of visceral adiposity dysfunction used to evaluate the metabolic health of the Chinese population. Steelworkers are more likely to be obese due to their exposure to special occupational factors, and have a higher prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis (CAS). This study aimed to analyze the special relationship between CVAI and CAS among steelworkers. A total of 4075 subjects from a northern steel company were involved in the cross-sectional study. Four logistic regression models were developed to analyze the correlation between CVAI and CAS. In addition, the restricted cubic spline was applied to fit the dose-response association between CVAI and CAS risk. In the study, the prevalence of CAS was approximately 25.94%. After adjustment for potential confounders, we observed a positive correlation between CVAI and CAS risk. Compared to the first CVAI quartile, the effect value odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI in the second, third, and fourth CVAI quartile were 1.523 (1.159-2.000), 2.708 (2.076-3.533), and 4.101 (3.131-5.372), respectively. Additionally, this positive correlation was stable in all subgroups except for female. Furthermore, we also found a non-linear relationship between CVAI and CAS risk (p nonlinear < 0.05). Notably, CVAI could increase the risk of CAS when higher than 106. In conclusion, our study showed that CVAI might be a reliable indicator to identify high-risk populations of CAS among steelworkers.

Abstract
A cohort study was conducted to examine the association of an increased body mass index (BMI) with late adverse outcomes after a carotid endarterectomy (CEA). It comprised 1597 CEAs, performed in 1533 patients at the Vascular Surgery Clinic in Belgrade, from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2017. The follow-up lasted four years after CEA. Data for late myocardial infarction and stroke were available for 1223 CEAs, data for death for 1305 CEAs, and data for restenosis for 1162 CEAs. Logistic and Cox regressions were used in the analysis. The CEAs in patients who were overweight and obese were separately compared with the CEAs in patients with a normal weight. Out of 1223 CEAs, 413 (33.8%) were performed in patients with a normal weight, 583 (47.7%) in patients who were overweight, and 220 (18.0%) in patients who were obese. According to the logistic regression analysis, the compared groups did not significantly differ in the frequency of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death, as late major adverse outcomes (MAOs), or in the frequency of restenosis. According to the Cox and logistic regression analyses, BMI was neither a predictor for late MAOs, analyzed separately or all together, nor for restenosis. In conclusion, being overweight and being obese were not related to the occurrence of late adverse outcomes after a carotid endarterectomy.

Effect of Weight Regain on Body Composition and Metabolic Biomarkers After Sleeve Gastrectomy: a Cross-Sectional Study from a Hospital Database. Obes Surg 2023; 33:268-278. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Weight regain (WR) is described in approximately 30% of patient's post-bariatric surgery. It is related to the progression or recurrence of associated medical problems and decline in health-related quality of life. This study aimed to test the return of body composition and metabolic biomarkers to pre-operative levels when WR occurs. METHODS In this cross-sectional study conducted in 2021, patients were randomly selected from the hospital's electronic databases between 2001 and 2020. Patient demographic data, comorbidities, body compositions, and metabolic biomarkers were collected. Three groups were defined: groups A (WR), B (weight loss), and C (control group; patients with obesity who had not yet undergone bariatric surgery). RESULTS A total of 88 patients were enrolled in this study and matched with the control group. The body mass index in group A was 43.8 ± 6.9 kg/m2; group B was 28.6 ± 4.2; group C was 43.9 ± 7.1. Body muscle mass, body fat mass, and visceral fat significantly differed between groups A and B (p < 0.001) but not between groups A and C (p = 0.8). There was a significant difference in leptin, ghrelin, postprandial glucagon-like peptide-1, insulin, and fibroblast growth factor-21 (but not retinol-binding protein-4) between groups A and B. Most metabolic biomarkers in group A returned to the pre-operative values as in group C. CONCLUSION WR had a direct negative effect on body composition and metabolic biomarkers, whereby the values returned to pre-operative levels. Early detection of WR and possible additional therapy are necessary to prevent associated medical problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study explored the serum concentrations of miR-26 in patients with carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) and defined the roles and mechanisms of miR-26 derived from the exosomes of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC-exos). METHODS The carotid artery width was diagnosed by ultrasound examination in patients with different degrees of CAS. The serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients were detected by biochemistry. The serum levels of miR-26 were determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). A model of CAS in ApoE-/- mice fed with a rich-fat diet was established to analyze the regulatory effects of serum miR-26 on blood lipids in mice. Adipose mesenchymal stem cell lines transfected with miR-26 were established. The regulatory relationship between the expression levels of inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-1β, and the expression levels of miR-26 in the supernatant of each group of cells was determined by qPCR. The ADSC-exos were extracted from ADSCs and injected into model mice through the tail vein. The therapeutic effect of ADSCs expressing miR-26 on model mice was evaluated by detecting the levels of inflammatory factors and blood lipids in the serum of the mice. RESULTS The degree of atherosclerosis (AS) was positively associated with the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery. The serum levels of miR-26 in patients were inversely correlated with the levels of blood lipids (TC, TG, and LDL-C), and positively correlated with HDL-C levels. Similarly, in the CAS mouse model, the serum levels of miR-26 were inversely correlated with the levels of blood lipids (TC, TG, and LDL-C), and positively correlated with HDL-C level. In ADSCs transfected with miR-26, the miR-26 expression in the cell supernatant was negatively regulated by the expression of inflammatory factors, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, in the cell supernatant. ADSC-exos expressing miR-26 has positive effects on correcting blood lipids and inflammatory factors in the mouse model of CAS. CONCLUSIONS miR-26 has an active role in CAS and may be a novel target for the treatment of CAS in the future.

Abstract
The perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) is an adipose tissue depot which surrounds most human blood vessels. It is metabolically active and has both a protective and a pathogenic role in vascular biology and pathobiology. It regulates vascular homeostasis and promotes vascular dysfunction. The purpose of this review is to consider the origin, structure, function, and dysfunction of this unique adipose depot consisting of white (WAT), brown (BAT) and beige adipose tissue, to support the concept that PVAT may be considered the fourth layer of the normal arterial wall (tunica adiposa), in which dysfunction creates a microenvironment that regulates, in part, the initiation and growth of the fibro-inflammatory lipid atherosclerotic plaque. Experimental in-vivo and in-vitro studies and human investigations show that the adipocytes, extracellular matrix, nerve fibers and vasa vasorum found in PVAT form a functional adipose tissue unit adjacent to, but not anatomically separated from, the adventitia. PVAT maintains and regulates the structure and function of the normal arterial wall through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms, that include modulation of medial smooth muscle cell contractility and secretion of anti-inflammatory molecules. PVAT shows regional phenotypic heterogeneity which may be important in its effect on the wall of specific sections of the aorta and its muscular branches during perturbations and various injuries including obesity and diabetes. In atherosclerosis, a pan-vascular microenvironment is created that functionally links the intima-medial atherosclerotic plaque to the adventitia and PVAT beneath the plaque, highlighting the local impact of PVAT on atherogenesis. PVAT adipocytes have inflammatory effects which in response to injury show activation and phenotypic changes, some of which are considered to have direct and indirect effects on the intima and media during the initiation, growth, and development of complicated atherosclerotic plaques. Thus, it is important to maintain the integrity of the full vascular microenvironment so that design of experimental and human studies include investigation of PVAT. The era of discarding PVAT tissue in both experimental and human research and clinical vascular studies should end.

Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis. However, the influence of adipose tissue in carotid atherosclerosis is not completely understood. No systematic review/meta-analysis was previously performed to understand if obesity is a risk factor for carotid atherosclerosis. This paper aims to provide an opportunistic review of the association between obesity and carotid atherosclerosis and define the role of the different adipose tissue depots in the characteristics of carotid stenosis. The databases PubMed and Cochrane Library were searched on 15–27 April and 19 May 2021. A total of 1750 articles published between 1985 and 2019 were identified, 64 were preselected, and 38 papers (35,339 subjects) were included in the final review. The most frequent methods used to determine obesity were anthropometric measures. Carotid plaque was mostly characterized by ultrasound. Overall obesity and visceral fat were not associated with the presence of carotid plaque when evaluated separately. Waist-hip ratio, however, was a significant anthropometric measure associated with the prevalence of carotid plaques. As it reflected the ratio of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, the balance between these depots could impact the prevalence of carotid plaques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) is a common manifestation of macroangiopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). C1Q/TNF-related protein 4 (CTRP4) was found to be involved in regulation of food intake behaviors and glucolipid metabolism, which were also key factors in the development of CAS. However, the relationship between serum CTRP4 and CAS in T2DM remains unclear. METHODS A total of 111 participants with T2DM were enrolled in the study and were divided into 2 groups (T2DM group and T2DM + CAS group) according to the result of carotid ultrasound examinations. Serum CTRP4 levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Trend χ2 test and binary stepwise logistic regression were conducted to assess the association between serum CTRP4 and the risk of CAS in T2DM. RESULTS Serum CTRP4 concentrations in T2DM + CAS group were significantly lower compared with those in T2DM group [7.98 (5.53) vs. 11.29 (7.36) ng/ml, P < 0.01]. The risk of CAS in T2DM decreased with the increasing of CTRP4 quartiles (P for trend < 0.01). Binary stepwise logistic regression suggested that serum CTRP4 might be an independent influence factor for CAS in patients with T2DM (P < 0.01) and high concentrations of serum CTRP4 were related to low risk of CAS in T2DM. CONCLUSIONS The concentrations of serum CTRP4 are lower in T2DM patients with CAS compared to those without CAS. Serum CTRP4 levels are negatively related to the risk of CAS in T2DM.

Abstract
Diet and lifestyle play a crucial role in the progress of some cardiovascular disorders (CVDs). Rising interest in natural products and their pharmacological investigations witnessed therapeutic potential against CVDs. Caffeic acid (CA) is an organic composite hydroxycinnamic acid derivative classified among phenolics. It is a secondary metabolite biosynthesized in all plant species in the form of ester conjugates. The reported pharmacological activities of CA are neuroprotective, cardioprotective, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. This work is aimed to examine the outcome of CA in atherogenic diet- (Ath-) induced rat model on lipid profile changes and endothelium function. The method involves a study duration of 35 days utilizing (n = 6) male Wistar rats (180–200 g) that were fed either normal chow or Ath. Study groups are given (i) normal chow diet, (ii) Ath, (iii) Ath + CA (25 or 50 mg/kg, p.o.), (iv) normal chow diet + CA (50 mg/kg, p.o.), and (v) Ath + Atorvastatin (ATORVA) (5 mg/kg, p.o.). Blood samples were collected at the end of the study to measure serum lipid profile, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and tissue oxidative stress level. Hemodynamic parameters and aorta staining were performed. CA treatment ameliorated lipid profile and significantly reduced the oxidative stress level. Aorta staining examination revealed a marked reduction of the atherosclerotic lesions. These findings suggested that CA is an effective treatment approach for preventing atherosclerotic lesion progression attributed to protection against oxidative stress and various enzymatic activities in the Ath model.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between body composition, basal metabolic rate (BMR), and serum concentrations of leptin with long-term weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and compare it with obesity before surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospective longitudinal analytical study. Three groups were formed: individuals 60 months post RYGB, with weight regain (G1) and without it (G2), and individuals with obesity who had not undergone bariatric surgery (G3). Body fat (BF), body fat mass (BFM), visceral fat (VF), fat-free mass (FFM), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and BMR were assessed by octapolar and multi-frequency electrical bioimpedance. Fasting serum concentrations of leptin were measured. RESULTS Seventy-two individuals were included, 24 in each group. Higher means of BF, BFM, VF, and leptin levels were observed in G1, when compared to G2 (BF: 47.5 ± 5.6 vs. 32.0 ± 8.0, p < 0.05; FBM: 47.8 ± 11.6 vs. 23.9 ± 7.0, p < 0.05; VF: 156.8 ± 30.2 vs. 96.1 ± 23.8, p < 0.05; leptin: 45,251.2 pg/mL ± 20,071.8 vs. 11,525.7 pg/mL ± 9177.5, p < 0.000). G1 and G2 did not differ in FFM, SMM, and BMR. G1 and G3 were similar according to BF, FFM, BMR, and leptin levels. Body composition, but not leptin, was correlated with %weight regain in G1 (FBM: r = 0.666, p < 0.000; BF: r = 0.428, p = 0.037; VF: r = 0.544, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION Long-term weight regain after RYGB is similar to pre-surgical obesity in body composition, BMR, and leptin concentrations, indicating relapse of metabolic and hormonal impairments associated with excessive body fat.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of multiple abdominal fat indices measured by ultrasound and anthropometric indices to predict the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) assessed by coronary angiography. Patients and Methods All participants subjected to clinical and laboratory assessments. Anthropometric measurements were taken followed by an ultrasound examination to measure fat thickness at multiple abdominal areas. Lastly, selective coronary angiography performed by the Judkins technique. Statistical analysis was performed to detect the association between all variables and CAD, followed by regression analysis, and Odds ratio (OR) was used to quantifies the strength of the association between two events. Results From the abdominal indices, the posterior right perinephric fat thickness (PRPFT) above the best cutoff value had the highest hazard ratio (HR: 12.3, p = 0.001), followed by visceral adipose tissue volume (VAT) (HR: 10.7, p < 0.001), waist circumference (WC) (HR: 6.7, p = 0.001), visceral fat thickness (VFT) (HR: 5.7, p = 0.002), and body mass index (BMI) (HR: 5.48, p = 0.017). It also showed an independent association between the severity of CAD and WC (HR: 4.28, p = 0.012), VFT (HR: 3.7, p = 0.032), VAT (HR: 3.7, p = 0.034), and waist to height ratio (WHtR) (HR: 3.3, p = 0.033). Conclusion Posterior perinephric fat thickness and visceral adipose tissue volume measured by ultrasound are strong noninvasive predictors for coronary artery disease, followed by body mass index, waist circumference and visceral fat thickness.

Abstract
Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) has been identified to have significant endocrine and paracrine functions, such as releasing bioactive adipokines, cytokines, and chemokines, rather than a non-physiological structural tissue. Considering the contiguity with the vascular wall, PVAT could play a crucial role in the pathogenic microenvironment of atherosclerosis. Growing clinical evidence has shown an association between PVAT and atherosclerosis. Moreover, based on computed tomography, the fat attenuation index of PVAT was verified as an indication of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. Under pathological conditions, such as obesity and diabetes, PVAT shows a proatherogenic phenotype by increasing the release of factors that induce endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory cell infiltration, thus contributing to atherosclerosis. Growing animal and human studies have investigated the mechanism of the above process, which has yet to be fully elucidated. Furthermore, traditional treatments for atherosclerosis have been proven to act on PVAT, and we found several studies focused on novel drugs that target PVAT for the prevention of atherosclerosis. Emerging as an indication, contributor to, and therapeutic target for atherosclerosis, PVAT warrants further investigation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of multiple abdominal fat indices as measured via ultrasonography for predicting the presence and severity of carotid artery atherosclerosis and to compare the predictive capacity of ultrasonographic measurements to that of anthropometric measurements. METHODS A total of 92 patients were included in this study. All participants underwent clinical and laboratory assessments, and anthropometric measurements were obtained. Ultrasound examinations were performed to measure the values of all abdominal fat indices and the intimamedia thickness, as well as to detect the presence of atherosclerotic plaques. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS In the multivariate analysis, significant associations were detected between carotid artery atherosclerosis and posterior right perinephric fat thickness (PRPFT) (hazard ratio [HR], 15.23; P<0.001), preperitoneal fat thickness (PPFT) (HR, 4.31; P=0.003), visceral adipose tissue volume (VAT) (HR, 7.61; P<0.001), visceral fat thickness (VFT) (HR, 8.84; P<0.001), the ratio of VFT to subcutaneous fat thickness (VFT/SCFT) (HR, 9.39; P<0.001), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (HR, 2.65; P=0.046). In the multivariate analysis, significant associations were also detected between carotid artery plaque and PRPFT (HR, 7.09; P<0.001), the abdominal wall fat index (AFI) (HR, 3.58; P=0.010), and VFT/SCFT (HR, 4.17; P=0.006). CONCLUSION Many abdominal fat indices as measured by ultrasound were found to be strong predictors of carotid artery atherosclerosis, including PRPFT, VFT/SCFT, VFT, VAT, PPFT, and WHtR. Moreover, PRPFT, VFT/SCFT, and AFI were identified as strong predictors of the presence of carotid artery plaque.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been linked to an increased prevalence and severity of carotid artery disease, as well as polyvascular disease. Carotid disease is also associated with obesity and abnormal peri-organ and intra-organ fat (APIFat) deposition (i.e., excess fat accumulation in several organs such as the liver, heart and vessels). In turn, DM is associated with APIFat. The coexistence of these comorbidities confers a greater risk of vascular events. Clinicians should also consider that carotid bruits may predict cardiovascular risk. DM has been related to a greater risk of adverse outcomes after carotid endarterectomy or stenting. Whether modifying risk factors (e.g., glycaemia and dyslipidaemia) in DM patients can improve the outcomes of these procedures needs to be established. Furthermore, DM is a risk factor for contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI). The latter should be recorded in DM patients undergoing carotid stenting since it can influence both short- and long-term outcomes. From a pathophysiological perspective, functional changes in the carotid artery may precede morphological ones. Furthermore, carotid plaque characteristics are increasingly being studied in terms of vascular risk stratification and monitoring short-term changes attributed to treatment. The present narrative review discusses the recent (2019) literature on the associations between DM and carotid artery disease. Physicians and vascular surgeons looking after patients with carotid disease and DM should consider these links that may influence outcomes. Further research in this field is also needed to optimise the treatment of such patients.

Abstract
Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), a crucial regulator of vascular homeostasis, is actively involved in vascular dysfunction during aging. PVAT releases various adipocytokines, chemokines and growth factors. In an endocrine and paracrine manner PVAT-derived factors regulate vascular signalling and inflammation modulating functions of adjacent layers of the vasculature. Pathophysiological conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, vascular injury and aging can cause PVAT dysfunction, leading to vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cell dysfunctions. We and others have suggested that PVAT is involved in the inflammatory response of the vascular wall in diet induced obesity animal models leading to vascular dysfunction due to disappearance of the physiological anticontractile effect. Previous studies confirm a crucial role for pinpointed PVAT inflammation in promoting vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in aging, enhancing the risk for development of cardiovascular disease. In this review, we discuss several studies and mechanisms linking PVAT to age-related vascular diseases. An overview of the suggested roles played by PVAT in different disorders associated with the vasculature such as endothelial dysfunction, neointimal formation, aneurysm, vascular contractility and stiffness will be performed. PVAT may be considered a potential target for therapeutic intervention in age-related vascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Obesity is a risk factor for a broad range of diseases. This study aimed to estimate association between selected variables (visceral fat, abdominal circumference and waist-hip ratio) and health risk in between male and female. MATERIALS AND METHODS The university student based cross-sectional study was conducted among male and female students. The anthropometric measurements were taken through the auto-calibrated digital scale. Bioelectrical impedance analyzer device was used to determine visceral fat area, abdominal circumference and waist-hip ratio. Independent t-test and Pearson Chi-Square was used for statistical analysis. To see the association among the all three variables, scatter plots were also drawn. RESULTS The results showed that 28.3% male and 9.4% female at risk for visceral fat, for the abdominal circumference 16.9% male and 6% female at risk and for waist-hip ratio 27.5% male and 6% female fell under risk category. There was a significant relationship among all variable for male and female. CONCLUSION Findings suggested that visceral fat area, abdominal circumference and waist-hip ratio were strong predictors of health risk. Male were more prone to health risk than female participants.

Abstract
Inflammation has been involved in the development of atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, and obesity. Interleukin 20 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine encoded by a polymorphic gene located in chromosome 1. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of two IL-20 polymorphisms (rs1400986 and rs1518108) with subclinical atherosclerosis (SA), cardiovascular risk factors and IL-20 levels in a cohort of Mexican individuals. The polymorphisms were determined in 274 individuals with SA and 672 controls. Under different models, rs1400986 (OR = 0.51, Pcodominant1 = 0.0001; OR = 0.36, Pcodominant2 = 0.014; OR = 0.49, Pdominant = 0.0001 and OR = 0.55, Padditive = 0.0001) and rs1518108 (OR = 0.62, Pcodominant2 = 0.048 and OR = 0.79, Padditive = 0.048) were associated with a lower risk of SA. These polymorphisms were associated with cardiovascular risk factors in individuals with SA and controls. Controls with the rs1400986 TT genotype presented high levels of IL-20 (p = 0.031). In individuals with the rs1400986 CC genotype, we observed a negative correlation between IL-20 levels and total abdominal tissue (TAT), visceral abdominal tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous abdominal tissue (SAT). Our results indicate that the IL-20 rs1400986 and rs1518108 polymorphisms were associated with decreased risk of developing SA and with some cardiovascular risk factors in individuals with SA and healthy controls. Negative correlation between BMI and VAT/SAT ratio in individuals with rs1400986 CC genotype and among IL-20 levels and TAT, VAT and SAT was observed.
