Effect of hexavalent chromium on the environment and removal techniques: A review

Molecular and toxicological mechanisms behind the effects of chromium (VI) on the male reproductive system of Mytilus galloprovincialis: First evidence for poly-ADP-ribosylation of protamine-like II

Studies on the molecular mechanisms of heavy metal toxicity in invertebrate reproduction are limited. Given that PARP-catalysed ADP-ribosylation is also involved in counteracting heavy metal toxicity and maintaining genomic integrity, and that PARylation is implicated in chromatin remodelling but its role in sperm chromatin remains to be elucidated, we investigated the effects of chromium(VI) at 1, 10 and 100 nM on the reproductive health of Mytilus galloprovincialis. The damage to the gonads was assessed by morphological analyses and the damage indices PARP and ɣH2A.X were measured. Changes in the binding of protamine-like (PL) to DNA and the possibility of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation of PL proteins were also investigated. Gonadal chromium accumulation and morphological damage were found, especially when the mussels were exposed to the highest dose of chromium(VI). In addition, the maximum expression of gonadal ɣH2A.X and PARP were obtained at 100 and 10 nM Cr(VI), respectively. Interestingly, for the first time in all exposed conditions, poly(ADP)-ribosylation was detected on PL-II, which, together with PL-III and PL-IV, are the major nuclear basic proteins of Mytilus galloprovincialis sperm chromatin. Since PL-II is involved in the final high level of sperm chromatin compaction, this post-translational modification altered the binding of the PL protein to DNA, favouring the action of micrococcal nuclease on sperm chromatin. This study provides new insights into the effects of chromium(VI) on Mytilus galloprovincialis reproductive system and proposes a molecular mechanism hypothesis describing the toxic effects of this metal on PL-DNA binding, sperm chromatin and gonads.

Development of a continuous electrochemical reactor incorporated with waste-derived activated carbon electrode for the effective removal of hexavalent chromium from industrial effluent

Being a recognized carcinogen, hexavalent chromium is hazardous to both human and environmental health. Thus, it is imperative to regulate and oversee their levels in a variety of industries, including textiles, dyes, pigments, and metal finishing. This study strives to reduce Cr(VI) in wastewater by using capacitive deionization in conjunction with an activated carbon-based electrode and a continuous electrochemical reactor (CER). Activated carbon derived from rubberwood sawdust demonstrated excellent properties, including a high surface area of 1157 m2 g-1. The electrical conductivity and mechanical stability of the electrode were enhanced by the incorporation of synthesized expanded graphite (EG) into the AC. Key parameters were optimized via systematic batch electroreduction experiments with an optimal response surface design. The efficacy of the fabricated CER was proved when it successfully reduced Cr(VI) in a 5 mg L-1 solution within 15 min under optimized conditions, in contrast to the considerably longer durations anticipated by conventional methods. Validation of these findings was done by treating industrial wastewater of 30 mg L-1 in the CER. The electroreduction of Cr(VI) followed the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum capacity of 13.491 mg g-1 and pseudo-second-order kinetics. These results indicate that the combined use of the modified AC electrode and CER holds potential as a sustainable and economical approach to effectively eliminate Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Anti-Oxidative and Anti-Apoptotic Oligosaccharides from Pichia pastoris-Fermented Cress Polysaccharides Ameliorate Chromium-Induced Liver Toxicity

Oxidative stress impairs the structure and function of the cell, leading to serious chronic diseases. Antioxidant-based therapeutic and nutritional interventions are usually employed for combating oxidative stress-related disorders, including apoptosis. Here, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of oligosaccharides, produced through Pichia pastoris-mediated fermentation of water-soluble polysaccharides isolated from Lepidium sativum (cress) seed mucilage, on chromium(VI)-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in mice. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), using Bio-Gel P-10 column, of the oligosaccharides product of fermentation revealed that P. pastoris effectively fermented polysaccharides as no long chain polysaccharides were observed. At 200 µg/mL, fractions DF73, DF53, DF72, and DF62 exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activity of 92.22 ± 2.69%, 90.35 ± 0.43%, 88.83 ± 3.36%, and 88.83 ± 3.36%, respectively. The antioxidant potential of the fermentation product was further confirmed through in vitro H2O2 radical scavenging assay. Among the screened samples, the highest H2O2 radical scavenging activity was displayed by DF73, which stabilized the free radicals by 88.83 ± 0.38%, followed by DF53 (86.48 ± 0.83%), DF62 (85.21 ± 6.66%), DF72 (79.9 4± 1.21%), and EPP (77.76 ± 0.53%). The oligosaccharide treatment significantly alleviated chromium-induced liver damage, as evident from the increase in weight gain, improved liver functions, and reduced histopathological alterations in the albino mice. A distinctly increased level of lipid peroxide (LPO) free radicals along with the endogenous hepatic enzymes were evident in chromium induced hepatotoxicity in mice. However, oligosaccharides treatment mitigated these effects by reducing the LPO production and increasing ALT, ALP, and AST levels, probably due to relieving the oxidative stress. DNA fragmentation assays illustrated that Cr(VI) exposure induced massive apoptosis in liver by damaging the DNA which was then remediated by oligosaccharides supplementation. Histopathological observations confirmed that the oligosaccharide treatment reverses the architectural changes in liver induced by chromium. These results suggest that oligosaccharides obtained from cress seed mucilage polysaccharides through P. pastoris fermentation ameliorate the oxidative stress and apoptosis and act as hepatoprotective agent against chromium-induced liver injury.

Engineering a sustainable cadmium sulfide/polyethyleneimine-functionalized biochar/chitosan composite for effective chromium adsorption: optimization, co-interfering anions, and mechanisms

A novel eco-friendly adsorbent was fabricated by mixing mushroom-derived cadmium sulfide and polyethyleneimine-functionalized biochar that was fabricated from coffee waste with a chitosan biopolymer. The green-synthesized CdS/PEI-BC/CTS composite was analyzed using several characterization methods to identify its morphological, compositional, and structural characteristics. In addition, the adsorption property of the composite was investigated for hexavalent chromium as a model for anionic heavy metals. The best adsorption conditions to efficiently adsorb Cr(vi) onto CdS/PEI-BC/CTS were scrutinized in the batch mode. The experimental results elucidated that the higher adsorption efficacy for Cr(vi) was 97.89% at pH = 3, Cr(vi) concentration = 50 mg L-1, CdS/PEI-BC/CTS dose = 0.01 g, and temperature = 20 °C. The impact of co-interfering anionic species on Cr(vi) adsorption was identified in simulated wastewater. The recycling property of the CdS/PEI-BC/CTS composite was assessed for ten runs to ensure the applicability of the green composite. The adsorption mechanism and interaction types were proposed on the basis of kinetic and isotherm studies, along with analysis tools. The mechanistic study proposed that the Cr(vi) adsorption onto CdS/PEI-BC/CTS occurred via chemical and physical pathways, including protonation, electrostatic interactions, reduction, and coordination bonds.

Synergistic effect of adsorption-photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in wastewater with biochar/TiO2 composite under simulated sunlight illumination

Photocatalysis, which is an alternative technology to conventional methods, utilizes solar energy as the driving force to address environmental concerns and has attracted widespread attention from chemists worldwide. In this study, a series of photocatalytic materials composed of agricultural waste and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterial was prepared for the synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium in wastewater under mild conditions. The results showed that the TiO2 nanomaterial exhibited a higher photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and performance for the adsorption-photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) after loading straw biochar (BC). When the loading amount of BC was 0.025 g (i.e., TBC-3), the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was as high as 99.9% under sunlight irradiation for 25 min, which was 2.9 and 3.5 times higher than that of pure TiO2 and BC samples, respectively. Additionally, after four cycles of experiments, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by TBC-3 remained at about 93.0%, proving its good chemical ability in our reaction system. Its excellent adsorption-photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the strong adsorption of BC and the outstanding photocatalytic performance of TiO2. Finally, the possible mechanism for the synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic reduction on BC/TiO2 to remove the highly toxic Cr(VI) in wastewater was proposed.

Characteristics and numerical simulation of chromium transportation, migration and transformation in soil-groundwater system

Understanding chromium (Cr) migration and dispersion patterns in the soil-groundwater system is critical for the control and remediation of subsurface Cr contamination. In this study, a typical Cr-contaminated site from the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China was simulated with a three-dimensional (3D) sandbox experiment to investigate the migration and transformation behavior of Cr. Results revealed that under the combined influence of rainfall and groundwater flow, a complex flow field favorable for 3D migration and solute dispersion was formed. The flow field characteristics were influenced by water-table depth, which in turn affected Cr behavior in the system. Moreover, downward flow field expansion under low water-table conditions led to Cr vertical migration range expansion, causing greater contamination in the deep soil. The migration process was accompanied with Cr(VI) reduction, during which approximately 75 % of the total Cr was immobilized in soils. The reactive transport model achieved a good fit for Cr retention and morphological distribution in the solid phase. The model indicates that Cr is more readily transported and dispersed with groundwater, and Cr migrated and spread downstream by 15 m during the eighth year. Therefore, managing water-table depth could be a strategy to minimize the Cr vertical migration and contamination.

Potential risk assessment and occurrence characteristic of heavy metals based on artificial neural network model along the Yangtze River Estuary, China

Pollution from heavy metals in estuaries poses potential risks to the aquatic environment and public health. The complexity of the estuarine water environment limits the accurate understanding of its pollution prediction. Field observations were conducted at seven sampling sites along the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) during summer, autumn, and winter 2021 to analyze the concentrations of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn) in water and surface sediments. The order of heavy metal concentrations in water samples from highest to lowest was Zn > As > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd, while that in surface sediments samples was Zn > Cr > As > Ni > Pb > Cu > Cd. Human health risk assessment of the heavy metals in water samples indicated a chronic and carcinogenic risk associated with As. The risks of heavy metals in surface sediments were evaluated using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (RI). Among the seven heavy metals, As and Cd were highly polluted, with Cd being the main contributor to potential ecological risks. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the sources of the different heavy metals, revealing that As originated primarily from anthropogenic emissions, while Cd was primarily from atmospheric deposition. To further analyze the influence of water quality indicators on heavy metal pollution, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was utilized. A modified model was proposed, incorporating biochemical parameters to predict the level of heavy metal pollution, achieving an accuracy of 95.1%. This accuracy was 22.5% higher than that of the traditional model and particularly effective in predicting the maximum 20% of values. Results in this paper highlight the pollution of As and Cd along the YRE, and the proposed model provides valuable information for estimating heavy metal pollution in estuarine water environments, facilitating pollution prevention efforts.

Adsorption enrichment integrated with paper-based devices for detection of trace levels of hexavalent chromium in water samples

In the present study, a sensitive microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μ-PADs) integrated with adsorption enrichment procedure was developed to analyze Cr(VI) in water samples. The affecting factors, including pH and amounts of reagents were optimized. The limit of detection of 0.0015 mg L-1 and linear range of 0.005-2 mg L-1 were achieved with good intra- and inter-day precision of 5.1 and 7.6% RSD, respectively. The results obtained by the proposed method were validated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The recoveries of the present method and ICP-OES were ranged from 96.3 to 109.0‬% and 106.0 to 109.7%, respectively. The two sets of (μ-PADs and ICP-OES) results were in a good agreement as paired t-test indicated no significant differences. The proposed method could be utilized for analyzing trace levels of Cr(VI) in water samples in the absence of conventional analytical instruments.

A novel strategy of tannery sludge disposal - converting into biochar and reusing for Cr(VI) removal from tannery wastewater

Tannery sludge with high chromium content has been identified as hazardous solid waste due to its potential toxic effects. The safety disposal and valorization of the tannery sludge remains a challenge. In this study, the chromium stabilization mechanism was systematically investigated during chromium-rich tannery sludge was converted to biochar and the removal performance of the sludge biochar (SBC) for Cr(VI) from tannery wastewater was also investigated. The results showed that increase in pyrolysis temperature was conductive to the stabilization of Cr and significant reduction of the proportion of Cr(VI) in SBC. It was confirmed that the stabilization of chromium mainly was attributed to the embedding of chromium in the C matrix and the transformation of the chromium-containing substances from the amorphous Cr(OH)3 to the crystalline state, such as (FeMg)Cr2O5. The biochar presented high adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) at low pH and the maximal theoretical adsorption capacity of SBC produced at 800°C can reach 352 mg Cr(VI)/g, the process of which can be well expressed by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo second order model. The electrostatic effect and reduction reaction were dominantly responsible for the Cr(VI) adsorption by SBC800. Overall, this study provided a novel strategy for the harmless disposal and resource utilization for the solid waste containing chromium in leather industry.

Effects of exogenous riboflavin or cytochrome addition on the cathodic reduction of Cr(VI) in microbial fuel cell with Shewanella putrefaciens

Bioreduction of Cr(VI) is recognized as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, attracting widespread interest. However, the slow rate of Cr(VI) bioreduction remains a practical challenge. Additionally, the direct removal efficiency of microbes for high concentrations of Cr(VI) is not ideal due to the toxicity. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of exogenous riboflavin or cytochrome on the cathodic reduction of Cr(VI) in microbial fuel cells. The results demonstrated that the exogenous riboflavin or cytochrome effectively improved the voltage output of the cells, with riboflavin increasing the voltage by 52.08%. Within the first 24 h, the Cr(VI) removal ratio in the normal, cytochrome, and riboflavin groups was 14.3%, 29.3%, and 53.8%, respectively. And the final removal ratio was 55.1%, 69.1%, and 98.0%, respectively. These results showed different enhancement effects of riboflavin and cytochrome on Cr(VI) removal. The analysis of riboflavin and cytochrome contents revealed that the additions did not have a significant impact on the autocrine riboflavin of S. putrefaciens, but affected the autocrine cytochrome. SEM, XPS, and FTIR results confirmed the presence of reduced Cr(III) on the cathode, which formed precipitate and adhered to the cathode surface. The EDS analysis showed that the amount of Cr on the cathode in normal, cytochrome, and riboflavin groups was 4.71%, 6.37%, 7.56%, respectively, which was consistent with the voltage and Cr(VI) removal data. These findings demonstrated the significant enhancement of exogenous riboflavin or cytochrome on Cr(VI) reduction, thereby providing data reference for the future bio-assisted remediation of Cr(VI) pollution.

Mycorrhizosphere bacteria inhibit chromium uptake and phytotoxicity by regulating proline metabolism, antioxidant defense system, and aquaporin gene expression in tomato

Chromium (Cr) contamination in soil-plant systems poses a pressing environmental challenge due to its detrimental impacts on plant growth and human health. Results exhibited that Cr stress decreased shoot biomass, root biomass, leaf relative water content, and plant height. However, single and co-application of Bacillus subtilis (BS) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) considerably enhanced shoot biomass (+ 21%), root biomass (+ 2%), leaf relative water content (+ 26%), and plant height (+ 13) under Cr stress. The frequency of mycorrhizal (F) association (+ 5%), mycorrhizal colonization (+ 13%), and abundance of arbuscules (+ 5%) in the non-stressed soil was enhanced when inoculated with combined BS and AMF as compared to Cr-stressed soil. The co-inoculation with BS and AMF considerably enhanced total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and proline content in Cr-stressed plants. Cr-stressed plants resulted in attenuated response in SOD, POD, CAT, and GR activities when inoculated with BS and AMF consortia by altering oxidative stress biomarkers (H2O2 and MDA). In Cr-stressed plants, the combined application of BS and AMF considerably enhanced proline metabolism, for instance, P5CR (+ 17%), P5CS (+ 28%), OAT (- 22%), and ProDH (- 113%) as compared to control. Sole inoculation with AMF downregulated the expression of SIPIP2;1, SIPIP2;5, and SIPIP2;7 in Cr-stressed plants. However, the expression of NCED1 was downregulated with the application of sole AMF. In contrast, the relative expression of Le4 was upregulated in the presence of AMF and BS combination in Cr-stressed plants. Therefore, it is concluded that co-application of BS and AMF enhanced Cr tolerance by enhancing proline metabolism, antioxidant enzymes, and aquaporin gene expression. Future study might concentrate on elucidating the molecular processes behind the synergistic benefits of BS and AMF, as well as affirming their effectiveness in field experiments under a variety of environmental situations. Long-term research on the effect of microbial inoculation on soil health and plant production might also help to design sustainable chromium remediation solutions.

Spectra metrology for interaction of heavy metals with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa OMCS-1 reveals static quenching and complexation dynamics of EPS with heavy metals

The adsorption behavior and interaction mechanisms of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa OMCS-1 towards chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were investigated. EPS-covered (EPS-C) cells exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.0001; two-way ANOVA) removal of Cr (85.58 ± 0.39%), Pb (81.98 ± 1.02%), and Cd (73.88 ± 1%) than EPS-removed (EPS-R) cells. Interactions between EPS-heavy metals were spontaneous (ΔG<0). EPS-Cr(VI) and EPS-Pb(II) binding were exothermic (ΔH<0), while EPS-Cd(II) binding was endothermic (ΔH>0) process. EPS bonded to Pb(II) via inner-sphere complexation by displacement of surrounding water molecules, while EPS-Cr(VI) and EPS-Cd(II) binding occurred through outer-sphere complexation via electrostatic interactions. Increased zeta potential of Cr (29.75%), Pb (41.46%), and Cd (46.83%) treated EPS and unchanged crystallinity (CIXRD=0.13), inferred EPS-metal binding via both electrostatic interactions and complexation mechanism. EPS-metal interaction was predominantly promoted through hydroxyl, amide, carboxyl, and phosphate groups. Metal adsorption deviated EPS protein secondary structures. Strong static quenching mechanism between tryptophan protein-like substances in EPS and heavy metals was evidenced. EPS sequestered heavy metals via complexation with C-O, C-OH, CO/O-C-O, and NH/NH2 groups and ion exchange with -COOH group. This study unveils the fate of Cr, Pb, and Cd on EPS surface and provides insight into the interactions among EPS and metal ions for metal sequestration.

Recent advances in enhanced technology of Cr(VI) bioreduction in aqueous condition: A review

Due to the extensive application of chromate in industry, chromium-contaminated water has emerged as a significant hidden danger that threatens human health and the safety of the ecological environment. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) through microbial processes has become one of the most notable methods for remediating water polluted by chromium due to its economic efficiency and environmentally friendly nature. However, several issues persist in its practical application, such as low reduction rates, the need for additional nutrients, and challenges in solid-liquid separation. Therefore, there is a growing focus on seeking enhanced methods for Cr(VI) microbial reduction, which has become a key area of research. This review represents the initial effort to systematically classify and summarize the means of enhancing Cr(VI) microbial reduction. It categorizes the enhancement methods into two main approaches: microbial-based and multi-method combined enhancement, offering detailed explanations for their mechanisms. This research provides both inspiration and theoretical support for the practical implementation of the Cr(VI) microbial reduction method.

Preparation of microbial agent immobilized composites for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater

Because of its extreme toxicity and health risks, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] has been identified as a major environmental contaminant. Bioreduction is considered as one of effective techniques for cleaning up Cr(VI)-contaminated sites, but the remediation efficiency needs to be enhanced. Here, a novel immobilized microbial agent was produced by immobilizing Bacillus cereus ZY-2009 with sodium alginate (SA) using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and activated carbon (AC). To evaluate the decrease of Cr(VI) by immobilized bacterial agents, batch tests were conducted with varying immobilization conditions, immobilization carriers, and dosages of medication. The removal of Cr(VI) by the agent prepared by the composite immobilization method was better than that by the adsorption and encapsulation methods. The optimal preparation conditions were the fraction of magnetic PVA was 5.00%, the fraction of SA was 4.00%, the fraction of CaCl2 was 4.00%, and the calcification time was 12 h. The experimental results indicated that PVA/SA/AC agents accelerated the reduction rate of Cr(VI). The removal rate of Cr(VI) by immobilized cells (90.5%) under ideal conditions was substantially higher than that of free cells (11.0%). This novel agent had a large specific surface area and a rich pore structure, accounting for its high reduction rate. The results suggest that the PVA/SA/AC immobilized Bacillus cereus ZY-2009 agent has great potential to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater treatment systems.

Comparison of metals in eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) and the environment across the North Pacific Ocean: Environmental processes drive source delivery

Seagrass beds play a critical role in biodiversity maintenance, serving as nursery habitats for fisheries, and aiding in carbon and sediment sequestration in the ecosystem. These habitats receive dissolved and particulate material inputs, like nutrients and heavy metals, affecting both plant health and the ecosystem. Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.), sediments, and water were randomly collected at twenty sites along the temperate North Pacific coasts of Asia and North America to assess heavy metals concentrations (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb). This aimed to understand heavy metal distribution and accumulation patterns in eelgrass tissues, revealing crucial factors influencing metal accumulation. The sampling included various areas, from pristine marine reserves to human-influenced zones, covering industrial, agricultural, and aquaculture regions, enabling a thorough analysis. This study's uniqueness lies in comparing heavy metal distributions in eelgrass tissues with sediments, uncovering unique accumulation patterns. Aboveground eelgrass tissues mainly accumulated Cd, Zn, and Cu, while belowground tissues stored Cr and Pb. Aboveground eelgrass tissues proved reliable in indicating Cd and Pb concentrations in sediments. However, the correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr in eelgrass tissues and environmental concentrations seemed less direct, requiring further investigation into factors affecting metal accumulation in seagrass. Human activities are probable major contributors to heavy metal presence in Asian marine environments, whereas oceanographic processes serve as primary metal sources in North American Pacific estuaries. Critical discoveries emphasize the necessity for ongoing research on phytotoxic thresholds and in-depth studies on the complex connections between seagrass physiology and environmental metal concentrations. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for evaluating the broader impact of heavy metal pollution on coastal ecosystems and developing effective conservation measures.

Concentration of heavy metals in pasteurized and sterilized milk and health risk assessment across the globe: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

Although milk and dairy products are almost complete food, they can contain toxic heavy elements with potential hazards for consumers. This review aims to provide a comprehensive report on the occurrence, concentration, and health risks of selected heavy metals in pasteurized and sterilized milk recorded worldwide.

METHODS

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to develop this systematic review. Databases included the Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Scientific Information Database, Google Scholar, and PubMed from inception until January 2023. Keywords related to the terms "Heavy metals", "Arsenic" and "Pasteurized and sterilized milk" and "Risk Assessment" were used. The potential health risks to human health from milk daily consumption were estimated using extracted data on heavy metals concentration based on metal estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, and carcinogenic risk.

RESULTS

A total of 48 potentially relevant articles with data on 981 milk samples were included in the systematic review. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry were the most common valid methods to measure heavy metals in milk samples. Following the initial evaluation, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb were the most contaminants, which exceeded the maximum permissible criteria in 94%, 67%, 62%, and 46% of the milk samples tested. Relying on target hazard quotient and carcinogenic risk results, milk consumers in 33(68.75%) and 7 (14.5%) studies were exposed to moderate to high levels of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk, respectively. The highest level of risk is due to the consumption of pasteurized and sterilized milk detected in Pakistan, Brazil, Egypt, Slovakia, and Turkey.

CONCLUSION

The elevated levels of heavy metals in milk samples, especially Pb and Cd is a public health concern; therefore, maximum control and strict regulations must be adopted to decrease heavy metals contaminants in the dairy industry. Further studies are required to develop safe milk processing and handling methods for the decontamination of heavy metals in milk and its products.

Ultrafast removal of toxic Cr(VI) by the marine bacterium Vibrio natriegens

The fastest-growing microbe Vibrio natriegens is an excellent platform for bioproduction processes. Until now, this marine bacterium has not been examined for bioremediation applications, where the production of substantial amounts of biomass would be beneficial. V. natriegens can perform extracellular electron transfer (EET) to Fe(III) via a single porin-cytochrome circuit conserved in Vibrionaceae. Electroactive microbes capable of EET to Fe(III) usually also reduce toxic metals such as carcinogenic Cr(VI), which is converted to Cr(III), thus decreasing its toxicity and mobility. Here, the performance of V. natriegens was explored for the bioremediation of Cr(VI). At a density of 100 mg/mL, V. natriegens removed 5-20 mg/L Cr(VI) within 30 s and 100 mg/L Cr(VI) within 10 min. In comparison, the model bacterium Escherichia coli grown to a comparable cell density removed Cr(VI) 36 times slower. To eliminate Cr(VI), V. natriegens had to be metabolically active, and functional outer-membrane c-type cytochromes were required. At the end of the Cr(VI) removal process, V. natriegens had reduced all of it into Cr(III) while adsorbing more than half of the metallic ions. These results demonstrate that V. natriegens, with its fast metabolism, is a viable option for the rapid treatment of aqueous pollution with Cr.

Effects of temperature on the migration behaviour of arsenic and chromium in tannery sludge under CO2 gasification

To reduce heavy metals (HMs) contamination from tannery sludge, this study investigated the migration behaviour of arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) at 700-900 °C using CO2 gasification. The HMs enrichment results showed that As contents of ash decreased (6.42→1.87 mg/kg) while Cr contents increased (41.40→78.24 mg/kg) over 700-900 °C. More Si-O bonds and fewer Ca-O bonds with increasing temperature in ash primarily determined this migration behaviour of HMs. Meanwhile, the proportions of toxic As(III) and Cr(VI) declined from 96.02% and 64.26-76.96% and 21.24%, forming As(0) and Cr(III) with less toxicity. This reduction was conducted via two pathways: (i) carbon reduced As(III)/Cr(VI) and (ii) carbon reduced Fe(II)/Fe(III) to Fe(0), then Fe(0) reduced As(III)/Cr(VI) assisted with carbon via Fe(0)→Fe(II)→Fe(III). However, free calcium ions oxidized As(0)/Cr(III) to As(III)/Cr(VI) at 700 ○C. At higher temperatures, silicate glass conversion of ash immobilized free calcium ions and barely oxidized HMs. Furthermore, this study identified the positive effect of increasing temperature on enhancing the stability of HMs in ash by transforming bioavailable HMs into non-bioavailable HMs, which decreased the leaching toxicity and environmental risk. Regarding HMs emissions control and cold gas efficiency, CO2 gasification treatment of tannery sludge is most effective at 800 °C.

Chromium immobilization and release by pipe scales in drinking water distribution systems: The impact of anions

Due to its high toxicity, the release of chromium (Cr) by pipe scales poses a serious risk to drinking water quality and human health. This study looked into how Cr immobilized and released by pipe scales. SEM, XRD, and XPS were applied to evaluate the physicochemical characterization of pipe scales. To identify times of immobilization and release and the proper scale to water ratio, the behaviors of Cr were examined in stagnation experiments. Afterward, the common anions in drinking water were designed as nine concentration gradients to explore their species and concentrations impacts on the immobilization and release process of Cr. It is worth mentioning that the pipe scales were classified into block pipe scales, lumpy pipe scales, and powder pipe scales in this experiment. The types of pipe scales were rarely considered as an influencing factor. Results revealed that in contrast to powder pipe scales, block pipe scales and lumpy pipe scales exhibited extremely comparable trends. Specifically, in terms of accumulation capacity, the order from largest to smallest was powder pipe scales, lumpy pipe scales, and block pipe scales. However, the potential of Cr release from block pipe scales was the highest, indicating a high danger of heavy metal re-release in actual circumstances. Findings from this study discovered the turning points of chloride and sulfate concentrations associated with the pipe scales species in the anion-promoted release. These results provide insight into the relationship between pipe scales and Cr in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS).

Neurobehavioral impairments from chromium exposure: Insights from a zebrafish model and drug validation

We have developed a zebrafish model to explore the alterations in neurobehaviors resulting from both acute and chronic exposure to chromium (Cr). Zebrafish exposed to half (HC group: 19.7 mg/L) and a quarter (LC group: 9.85 mg/L) of the LD50 concentration of Cr for a span of 2 weeks exhibited aberrant locomotion, heightened anxiety, cognitive impairment, and reduced aggression - hallmark traits reminiscent of an Alzheimer's Disease (AD)-like syndrome. Furthermore, zebrafish exposed to an environmentally relevant concentration of Cr (EC group: 100 μg/L) for an extended period of 9 weeks exhibited behaviors comparable to those observed in the HC group. Moreover, the study investigated the neuroprotective effects of donepezil (Don), galantamine (Gal) and resveratrol (Res) drugs in response to neurobehavioral impairments induced by Cr (VI) exposure in zebrafish. Don and Res effectively protect the zebrafish from Cr (VI)-induced anxiety, and memory impairment. Furthermore, Cr (VI) exposure induced heightened oxidative stress while simultaneously diminishing antioxidant enzyme levels. Remarkably, these effects were counteracted in the drug-treated groups. Likewise, exposure to Cr (VI) led to an increase in the expression of genes linked to AD and neuroinflammation. Nevertheless, drug treatment reversed this effect in Cr (VI)-exposed fish. The results of our study highlight the potentials of zebrafish model in demonstrating neurobehavioral impairments induced by Cr (VI), thereby paving the way for its utilization in vivo neurobehaviors investigations and pharmaceutical screening.

Optimizing electronic states of Pd/WO3 nanofibers for enhanced catalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium with formic acid

Through theoretical calculations, we show that integrating Pd with WO3 nanomaterials can trigger the interfacial electron transfer from Pd to WO3, thus upshifting the d-band center (εd) of Pd to optimize toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction. The elevated εd can derive stronger chemisorption capability toward crucial formic acid molecules, notably lowering the thermodynamic energy barrier and speeding up the kinetics process. In order to realize this concept, we synthesized unique Pd/WO3 nanofibers by loading Pd nanoparticles onto electrospun WO3 nanofibers through an in situ photodeposition technique. Extensive structural, morphological, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) characterizations confirm the successful formation of the above nanofibers. As anticipated, the as-designed Pd/WO3 nanofibers exhibit enhanced catalytic performance in the Cr(VI) reduction with a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 62.12 min-1, surpassing a series of reported Pd-based catalysts. Such nanofibrous WO3-induced electronic modification of Pd with a high specific area leads to catalytic enhancement, providing a novel model for catalyst design.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Indoor Household Dust in Urban and Rural Areas of Chiang Mai and Lamphun Provinces, Thailand

Indoor exposure to heavy metals poses human health risks worldwide, but study reports from Thailand are still limited, particularly in rural and urban areas. We measured the heavy metals in a hundred indoor household dust samples collected from urban and rural areas in Chiang Mai and Lamphun provinces and found a significantly higher concentration of As in rural areas and Cd in urban areas with industrial activities. The source identification of the heavy metals showed significant enrichment from traffic emissions, paint, smoking, and mixed sources with natural soil. From health risk assessment models, children were more vulnerable to noncarcinogenic risks (HI = 1.45), primarily via ingestion (HQ = 1.39). Lifetime cancer risks (LCRs) due to heavy metal exposure were found in adults (LCR = 5.31 × 10-4) and children (LCR = 9.05 × 10-4). The cancer risks from As were higher in rural areas via ingestion, while Cr and Ni were higher in urban areas via inhalation and ingestion, respectively. This study estimated that approximately 5 out of 10,000 adults and 9 out of 10,000 children among the population may develop cancer in their lifetime from exposure to indoor heavy metals in this region.

Progress in phytoremediation of chromium from the environment

As chromium (Cr) in ecosystems affects human health through food chain exposure, phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and efficient way to reduce chromium pollution in the environment. Here, we review the mechanism of absorption, translocation, storage, detoxification, and regulation of Cr in plants. The Cr(VI) form is more soluble, mobile, and toxic than Cr(III), reflecting how various valence states of Cr affect environmental risk characteristics, physicochemical properties, toxicity, and plant uptake. Plant root's response to Cr exposure leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptosis. Cell wall immobilization, vacuole compartmentation, interaction of defense proteins and organic ligand with Cr, and removal of reactive oxygen species by antioxidants continue plant life. In addition, the combined application of microorganisms, genetic engineering, and the addition of organic acids, nanoparticles, fertilization, soil amendments, and other metals could accelerate the phytoremediation process. This review provides efficient methods to investigate and understand the complex changes of Cr metabolism in plants. Preferably, fast-growing, abundantly available biomass species should be modified to mitigate Cr pollution in the environment as these green and efficient remediation technologies are necessary for the protection of soil and water ecology.

Remediation materials for the immobilization of hexavalent chromium in contaminated soil: Preparation, applications, and mechanisms

Hexavalent chromium is a toxic metal that can induce severe chromium contamination of soil, posing a potential risk to human health and ecosystems. In recent years, the immobilization of Cr(VI) using remediation materials including inorganic materials, organic materials, microbial agents, and composites has exhibited great potential in remediating Cr(VI)-contaminated soil owing to the environmental-friendliness, short period, simple operation, low cost, applicability on an industrial scale, and high efficiency of these materials. Therefore, a systematical summary of the current progress on various remediation materials is essential. This work introduces the production (sources) of remediation materials and examines their characteristics in detail. Additionally, a critical summary of recent research on the utilization of remediation materials for the stabilization of Cr(VI) in the soil is provided, together with an evaluation of their remediation efficiencies toward Cr(VI). The influences of remediation material applications on soil physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and plant growth are summarized. The immobilization mechanisms of remediation materials toward Cr(VI) in the soil are illuminated. Importantly, this study evaluates the feasibility of each remediation material application for Cr(VI) remediation. The latest knowledge on the development of remediation materials for the immobilization of Cr(VI) in the soil is also presented. Overall, this review will provide a reference for the development of remediation materials and their application in remediating Cr(VI)-contaminated soil.

Synthesis and properties of thiol-modified CNC via surface tosylation

SH-containing polymers and nanoparticles are a significant direction in the creation of novel materials. The aim of this work is the synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with a surface modified by tosyl functions (CNC-Ts) and their further modification into SH-containing nanocrystals (CNC-SH). CNC-Ts were synthesized in an aqueous-organic emulsion from never-dried particles, while maintaining the size and supramolecular structure of CNC; the content of Ts-functions is up to 2.5 mmol·g-1. Structure of the derivatives was analyzed by TEM, XRD, CP/MAS 13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Nucleophilic substitution and hydrolysis of the obtained thioisouronium salts leads to the production of CNC-SH. To quantify SH-groups we used elemental analysis, potentiometric titration and Folin-Ciocalteu and Ellman's reagents. It is shown that SH-groups on the surface are partially oxidized and are involved in a dense network of hydrogen bonds. Rheological properties of CNC-SH hydrosols are close to those of CNC, addition of H2O2 at acidic pH leads to an increase in viscosity of the system; H2O2 added at neutral pH causes opposite effect - viscosity decreases. CNC-SH have a high capacity for sorption of Cr(VI) in acidic environments and exhibit photoreductive properties under UV irradiation.

A mini review of hazardous wastes generated by environmental analytical laboratories: a perspective from Sri Lanka as an economically developing country

Attention given to environmental pollution caused by environmental analytical (EA) laboratories is very poor in Sri Lanka (an economically developing country). This article discusses EA laboratory effluents and hazardous solid wastes, current environmental management practices, and the legislative requirements in Sri Lanka. Effluent quantities generated are low (29.99-63.09 L/week), but characterized with variable pH, high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and heavy metals, and very high ecotoxicity. Quantities of chemical-contaminated solid wastes is 80-100 kg/year (excluding outdated and rejected chemicals). Most laboratories dispose chemical-contaminated solid wastes mixed with non-hazardous recyclables using the services of local authorities and some laboratories (particularly in areas where there is no municipal solid waste collection), practice backyard dumping or open burning, while a few laboratories employ private parties to dispose or burn these wastes elsewhere. Only one laboratory is disposing chemical-contaminated solid wastes through co-processing. Appropriate waste management strategies (including some cleaner production concepts) are discussed in this paper for selected streams of hazardous wastes.

One-Pot Synthesis of Lamellar Fe-Cu Bimetal-Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide and Its Enhanced Removal of Cr(VI) from Water

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a typical heavy metal pollutant, making its removal from wastewater imperative. Although nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene-based materials are excellent remediation materials, they have drawbacks, such as agglomeration and being difficult to recycle. A facile synthesis method for decorating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with ultrathin nZVI (within 10 nm) was explored in this study in order to develop an effective tool for Cr(VI) detoxication. Cu particles were doped in these composites for electron-transfer enhancement and were verified to improve the rate by 2.4~3.4 times. Batch experiments were conducted at different pHs, initial concentrations, ionic strengths, and humic acid (HA) concentrations. From these observations, it was found that the acid condition and appearance of Cu and rGO enhanced the treatment capacity. This procedure was fitted with a pseudo-second-order model, and the existence of NaCl and HA impeded it to some extent. Cr(VI) could be detoxified into Cr(III) and precipitated on the surface. Combining these analyses, a kinetics study, and the characterizations before and after the reaction, the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) was further discussed as a complex process involving adsorption, reduction, and precipitation. The maximum removal capacity of 156.25 mg g-1 occurred in the acid condition, providing a potential Cr(VI) remediation method.

Cost-effective core@shell structured zero-valent iron nanoparticles @ magnetic (nZVI@Fe3O4) for Cr(vi) removal from aqueous solutions: preparation by disproportionation of Fe(ii)

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and its composites are known for their excellent ability to remove Cr(vi), but their preparation can be expensive due to the reduction processes. This study presents a cost-effective method to prepare core@shell structured nZVI@Fe3O4 nanocomposites using a novel Fe(ii) disproportionation reaction. The nZVI@Fe3O4 was thoroughly characterized using various techniques, including FESEM, HRTEM, EDS, XPS, XRD, FTIR, and VSM. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the removal efficiency of nZVI@Fe3O4 in eliminating Cr(vi) ions from aqueous solutions, while classical models were employed to investigate the influencing factors associated with the removal process. The results showed that a 0.7 mg per ml NaOH solution reacted with Fe(ii) at 150 °C for 0.5 h could be used to prepare nZVI@Fe3O4 composites efficiently and inexpensively. nZVI@Fe3O4 was able to remove more than 99% of Cr(vi) from both simulated Cr(vi) solutions and real electroplating wastewater, and the recovery and preparation could be easily performed using external magnets to separate it from the solution. At pH 6.0, the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) for Cr(vi) reached 58.67 mg g-1. The reaction mechanism was discussed from the perspective of electron transfer. Overall, the results suggest that nZVI@Fe3O4, an efficient adsorbent prepared using an environmentally friendly and inexpensive Fe(ii) disproportionation reaction, is a promising option for the treatment of Cr(vi) from industrial wastewater and other contaminated water sources.

Influencing factors and mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by facultative anaerobic Exiguobacterium sp. PY14

Microbial reduction is an effective way to deal with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] contamination in the environment, which can significantly mitigate the biotoxicity and migration of this pollutant. The present study investigated the influence of environmental factors on aqueous Cr(VI) removal by a newly isolated facultative anaerobic bacterium, Exiguobacterium sp. PY14, and revealed the reduction mechanism. This strain with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 400 mg/L showed the strongest Cr(VI) removal capacity at pH 8.0 because of its basophilic nature, which was obviously depressed by increasing the Cr(VI) initial concentration under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In contrast, the removal rate constant for 50 mg/L of Cr(VI) under anaerobic conditions (1.82 × 10-2 h-1) was 3.3 times that under aerobic conditions. The co-existence of Fe(III) and Cu(II) significantly promoted the removal of Cr(VI), while Ag(I), Pb(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) inhibited it. Electron-shuttling organics such as riboflavin, humic acid, and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate promoted the Cr(VI) removal to varying degrees, and the enhancement was more significant under anaerobic conditions. The removal of aqueous Cr(VI) by strain PY14 was demonstrated to be due to cytoplasmic rather than extracellular reduction by analyzing the contributions of different cell components, and the end products existed in the aqueous solution in the form of organo-Cr(III) complexes. Several possible genes involved in Cr(VI) metabolism, including chrR and chrA that encode well-known Chr family proteins responsible for chromate reduction and transport, respectively, were identified in the genome of PY14, which further clarified the Cr(VI) reduction pathway of this strain. The research progress in the influence of crucial environmental factors and biological reduction mechanisms will help promote the potential application of Exiguobacterium sp. PY14 with high adaptability to environmental stress in Cr(VI) removal in the actual environment.

Sorption enhancement of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution by polyaniline confined in three-dimensional network of composite porous hydrogel

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is a typical harmful pollutant, which is carcinogenic or mutagenic to aquatic animals and humans. In this study, sepiolite/humic acid/polyvinyl alcohol@ polyaniline (SC/HA/PVA@PANI) composite porous hydrogel adsorbent was synthesized by Pickering emulsion template in situ chemical oxidative polymerization for adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The in situ polymerization of aniline at the Pickering emulsion interface and the unique three-dimensional network structure of the hydrogel act as an effective "confinement" for the growth of the polymer. The porous structure of the material acts as a water channel, which effectively accelerates the binding of the adsorbate to the adsorption sites, and significantly improves the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of PANI for Cr(VI) confined in three-dimensional network of composite porous SC/HA/PVA@PANI hydrogel reached 1180.97 mg/g-PANI, which increased about 27-fold compared the adsorption capacity of pure PANI (43.48 mg/g). It is shown that the experimental design effectively avoids the agglomeration of PANI and improves its potential adsorption performance. In addition, the analysis of FESEM-EDX, FT-IR, and XPS spectra before and after adsorption confirmed that the main adsorption mechanisms of Cr(VI) on SC/HA/PVA@PANI included ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and redox reaction. In conclusion, SC/HA/PVA@PANI has good stability and excellent adsorption performance, which is a new type of Cr(VI) ion adsorbent with great potential.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Technical Lignin-Based Nanotube for the Efficient and Selective Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solution

Aminated lignin (AL) was obtained by modifying technical lignin (TL) with the Mannich reaction, and aminated lignin-based titanate nanotubes (AL-TiNTs) were successfully prepared based on the AL by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method. The characterization of AL-TiNTs showed that a Ti-O bond was introduced into the AL, and the layered and nanotubular structure was formed in the fabrication of the nanotubes. Results showed that the specific surface area increased significantly from 5.9 m2/g (TL) to 188.51 m2/g (AL-TiNTs), indicating the successful modification of TL. The AL-TiNTs quickly adsorbed 86.22% of Cr(VI) in 10 min, with 99.80% removal efficiency after equilibration. Under visible light, AL-TiNTs adsorbed and reduced Cr(VI) in one step, the Cr(III) production rate was 29.76%, and the amount of total chromium (Cr) removal by AL-TiNTs was 90.0 mg/g. AL-TiNTs showed excellent adsorption capacities of Zn2+ (63.78 mg/g), Cd2+ (59.20 mg/g), and Cu2+ (66.35 mg/g). After four cycles, the adsorption capacity of AL-TiNTs still exceeded 40 mg/g. AL-TiNTs showed a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 95.86% in simulated wastewater, suggesting a promising practical application in heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Efficient removal of Cr from aqueous solution by catechol/m-phenylenediamine nanospheres combined with Fe(II)

The discharge of chromium-containing wastewater in industrial production causes resource loss and damage to the ecological environment. Currently, various phenolamine materials have been used to remove chromium, but their harsh adsorption conditions bring many difficulties. For example, ideal chromium removal is only achieved at low pH. In this study, we synthesized catechol/m-phenylenediamine nanospheres (CMN) and combined CMN with Fe(II) for Cr removal from aqueous solutions, and Fe(II) comes from FeSO4·7H2O. CMN was characterized and analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS). The adsorption performance was studied through a series of adsorption experiments. When C0 = 900 mg/L and pH = 6, the maximum adsorption capacity obtained in the experiment was 977.1 mg/g. It maintains excellent adsorption properties in acidic, neutral and alkaline environments. The results of the adsorption mechanism showed that the ultra-high adsorption capacity of CMN and Fe(II) for Cr was the result of the synergistic effect of adsorption and reduction, including electrostatic attraction, reduction and coprecipitation. CMN is expected to be an ideal adsorbent for Cr removal in aqueous solution due to its low cost, high biocompatibility and high efficiency in Cr removal.

A review of chromium (Cr) epigenetic toxicity and health hazards

Carcinogenic metals affect a variety of cellular processes, causing oxidative stress and cancer. The widespread distribution of these metals caused by industrial, residential, agricultural, medical, and technical activities raises concern for adverse environmental and human health effects. Of these metals, chromium (Cr) and its derivatives, including Cr(VI)-induced, are of a public health concern as they cause DNA epigenetic alterations resulting in heritable changes in gene expression. Here, we review and discuss the role of Cr(VI) in epigenetic changes, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, micro-RNA changes, biomarkers of exposure and toxicity, and highlight prevention and intervention strategies to protect susceptible populations from exposure and adverse occupational health effects. Cr(VI) is a ubiquitous toxin linked to cardiovascular, developmental, neurological, and endocrine diseases as well as immunologic disorders and a high number of cancer types in humans following inhalation and skin contact. Cr alters DNA methylation levels as well as global and gene-specific histone posttranslational modifications, emphasizing the importance of considering epigenetics as a possible mechanism underlying Cr(VI) toxicity and cell-transforming ability. Our review shows that determining the levels of Cr(VI) in occupational workers is a crucial first step in shielding health problems, including cancer and other disorders. More clinical and preventative measures are therefore needed to better understand the toxicity and safeguard employees against cancer.

Novel efficient capture of hexavalent chromium by polyethyleneimine/amyloid fibrils/polyvinyl alcohol aerogel beads: Functional design, applicability, and mechanisms

The harmful effects of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) on the environment and human health have aroused wide public concern. In this study, bulk spherical aerogel beads (PAP) were synthesized from polyethyleneimine (PEI), protein amyloid fibrils (AFL), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) through green technology and its removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater was comprehensively studied. The results showed that although the bulk PAP beads (∼ 5 mm) only had an average pore size of 16.88 nm and a BET surface area of 12 m²/g, its maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) reached 121.44 mg/g (at 298 K). Cr(VI) adsorption onto PAP conformed to pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and was endothermic. The adsorption of Cr(VI) decreased stepwise with the increase of solution alkalinity (pH = 2: 91.97%; pH = 10: 0.04%). Importantly, PAP showed high selectivity towards Cr(VI) in mixed heavy metal solutions (Cr(VI) > Pb(II) > Ni(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II)) and good reusability (removal efficiency > 88% after 5 cycles). PAP had excellent anti-interference ability against FA and HCO₃^- with the overall removal rate exceeding 87% in the presence of 5 - 25 mg/L of these ions. Cations such as Na⁺, Mg²⁺, and other heavy metal ions at high concentrations could promote the removal efficiency of Cr(VI). The removal rates of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) by PAP in a tannery wastewater were 34.4% and 59.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal rates of Cr(VI) in a electroplating wastewater and a contaminated soil leachate reached 84.4∼89.7%, showing high practicability. Mechanism studies revealed that electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, reduction, and complexation were the main reactions for Cr(VI) removal by PAP. In general, the study of PAP provides a new insight into using bulk monolith materials for treating Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater.

Synchronously Enhanced Removal Ability and Stability of MXene through Biomimetic Modification

Increasing environmental problems intensify the demand for high-performance environmental purification materials. MXene is a typical transition-metal carbide/nitride material with a two-dimensional geometric feature and a good deal of functional groups, and it is considered as an efficient adsorbent for removing pollutants from wastewater. However, the easy oxidation and relatively low adsorption capacity greatly restrict its application. In this study, the MXene/polydopamine (PDA) composite particles were fabricated through the biomimetic modification method of inducing the self-polymerization of dopamine in an MXene aqueous solution. Microstructure characterizations demonstrate that PDA facilitates the exfoliation of MXene. Adsorption measurements show that MXene and PDA exhibit an apparent synergistic effect in removing chromium hexavalent Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, and more PDA content leads to a larger synergistic effect. Consequently, the composite particles exhibit an ultrahigh adsorption capacity (862.3 mg/g). Specifically, even if the composite particles were stored in aqueous solution for 2 months, they still exhibit high adsorption ability with only a 3.3% loss in adsorption capacity, indirectly confirming the enhanced stability of MXene induced by PDA. Furthermore, the composite particles also show reduction ability to Cr(VI) and about 54.3% Cr(VI) can be reduced to harmless chromium trivalent Cr(III). This study provides a new method for the preparation of MXene-based adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity and high stability, which has broad application prospects in the field of wastewater treatment.

Aquaculture sediments amended with biochar improved soil health and plant growth in a degraded soil

Sustainable and safe management of aquaculture sediments is of great concern. Biochar (BC) and fishpond sediments (FPS) are rich in organic carbon and nutrients and thus can be used as soil amendments; however, it is not fully explored how the biochar amended fishpond sediments can affect soil properties/fertility and modulate plant physiological and biochemical changes, particularly under contamination stress. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation was carried out to explore the effects of FPS and BC-treated FPS (BFPS) on soil and on spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) grown in chromium (Cr) contaminated soils. Addition of FPS and BFPS to soil caused an increase in nutrients content and reduced Cr levels in soil, which consequently resulted in a significant increase in plant biomass, chlorophyll pigments, and photosynthesis, over the control treatment. The most beneficial effect was observed with the BFPS applied at 35 %, which further increased the antioxidant enzymes (by 2.75-fold, at minimum), soluble sugars by 24.9 %, and upregulated the gene expression activities. However, the same treatment significantly decreased proline content by 74.9 %, Malondialdehyde by 65.6 %, H₂O₂ by 65.1 %, and Cr concentration in spinach root and shoot tissues. Moreover, the average daily intake analysis showed that BFPS (at 35 %) could effectively reduce human health risks associated with Cr consumption of leafy vegetables. In conclusion, these findings are necessary to provide guidelines for the reutilization of aquaculture sediments as an organic fertilizer and a soil amendment for polluted soils. However, more future field studies are necessary to provide guidelines and codes on aquaculture sediments reutilization as organic fertilizer and soil amendment for polluted soils, aiming for a more sustainable food system in China and globally, with extended benefits to the ecosystem and human.

Efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling mediated by L-cysteine functionalized zero-valent iron for enhancing Cr(VI) removal

Herein, L-cysteine (Cys) was modified on zero-valent iron (C-ZVI^bm) by using a mechanical ball-milling method to improve the surface functionality and the Cr(VI) removal efficiency. Characterization results indicated that Cys was modified on the surface of ZVI by the specific adsorption of Cys on the oxide shell to form a -COO-Fe complex. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of C-ZVI^bm (99.6%) was much higher than that of ZVI^bm (7.3%) in 30 min. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis inferred that Cr(VI) was more likely to be adsorbed on the surface of C-ZVI^bm to form bidentate binuclear inner-sphere complexes. The adsorption process was well-matched to the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Electrochemical analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) spectroscopy revealed that Cys on the C-ZVI^bm lowered the redox potential of Fe(III)/Fe(II), and favored the surface Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling mediated by the electrons from Fe⁰ core. These electron transfer processes were beneficial to the surface reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Our findings provide new understandings into the surface modification of ZVI with a low-molecular weight amino acid to promote in-situ Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling, and have great potential for the construction of efficient systems for Cr(VI) removal.

Adsorption of direct blue 106 dye using zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared via green synthesis technique

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have in recent times shown effective adsorption capability for the confiscation of colour contaminants from aqueous environments (aquatic ecosystems or water bodies) due to the fact that ZnO contains more functional groups. Direct blue 106 (DB106) dye was selected for this present study as a model composite due to its wide range of uses in textiles (cotton and wools), woods, and paper industries, as well as their therapeutic applications, along with its potential for impairments. This study therefore focuses on the use of DB106 dye as a model composite due to its wide range of uses in textiles (cotton and wools), woods, and paper industries, as well as their therapeutic applications and their potential for impairments. Furthermore, the surface functionalization, shape, and composite pore size were revealed by TEM, FTIR, UV, and BET techniques. The current study uses green synthesis method to prepare ZnO-NPs as an adsorbent for the DB106 dye molecules adsorption under various conditions using the batch adsorption process. The adsorption of DB106 dye to the ZnO-NPs biosorbent was detected to be pH-dependent, with optimal adsorption of DB106 (anionic) dye particles observed at pH 7. DB106 dye adsorption to the synthesized ZnO-NPs adsorbent was distinct by means of the linearized Langmuir (LNR) and pseudo-second-order (SO) models, with an estimated maximum adsorption capacity (Q_m) of 370.37 mg/g.

Preparation and application of tremella polysaccharide based chrome free tanning agent for sheepskin processing

The abuse of chrome tanning agent in leather processing has caused great harm to human health and the natural environment. We use tremella polysaccharides (TP), lentinan (LNT) and konjac gum (KG) as raw materials, and sodium periodate as oxidant to prepare the corresponding polysaccharide tanning agent. Tremella polysaccharide was selected as the best tanning agent according to the shrinkage temperature, and the subsequent experiments were carried out. Tremella polysaccharide (TP) as raw material and sodium periodate as an oxidant, dialdehyde tremella polysaccharide (DTP) was prepared and applied in leather tanning. The effects of different oxidation conditions (sodium periodate dosage, temperature, pH, and reaction time) on the shrinkage temperature of DTP tanned leather were studied. The change of shrinkage temperature showed that the dosage of sodium periodate had the greatest influence on the shrinkage temperature. Therefore, the effects of different dosage of sodium periodate on the aldehyde content and molecular weight of DTP were investigated, including the analysis of physical properties and microstructure of tanned leather. In general, the increase of sodium periodate dosage was found to increase the aldehyde content and reduce the molecular weight, which was more conducive to leather tanning.

Synthesis and application of quantum dots in detection of environmental contaminants in food: A comprehensive review

Environmental pollutants can accumulate in the human body through the food chain, which may seriously impact human health. Therefore, it is of vital importance to develop quick, simple, accurate and sensitive (respond quickly) technologies to evaluate the concentration of environmental pollutants in food. Quantum dots (QDs)-based fluorescence detection methods have great potential to overcome the shortcomings of traditional detection methods, such as long detection time, cumbersome detection procedures, and low sensitivity. This paper reviews the types and synthesis methods of QDs with a focus on green synthesis and the research progress on rapid detection of environmental pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, pesticides, and antibiotics) in food. Metal-based QDs, carbon-based QDs, and "top-down" and "bottom-up" synthesis methods are discussed in detail. In addition, research progress of QDs in detecting different environmental pollutants in food is discussed, especially, the practical application of these methods is analyzed. Finally, current challenges and future research directions of QDs-based detection technologies are critically discussed. Hydrothermal synthesis of carbon-based QDs with low toxicity from natural materials has a promising future. Research is needed on green synthesis of QDs, direct detection without pre-processing, and simultaneous detection of multiple contaminants. Finally, how to keep the mobile sensor stable, sensitive and easy to store is a hot topic in the future.

Fabrication of N-doping activated carbons from fish waste and sawdust for Acid Yellow 36 dye removal from an aquatic environment

Acid Yellow 36 (AY36) dye is a synthetic azo dye that is excessively used in various industries, causing hazardous environmental effects. The main target of this study is the preparation of self-N-doped porous activated carbon (NDAC) and the investigation in eliminating the AY36 dye from the water solution. The NDAC was prepared by mixing fish waste (60% protein content) which was considered a self-nitrogen dopant. A combination of Fish waste, sawdust, zinc chloride and urea with a mass ratio (5:5:5:1) was submitted to hydrothermal process at 180 °C for 5 h followed by pyrolysis for 1 h under N₂ stream at 600, 700, and 800 °C. Fabricated NDAC was qualified as an adsorbent for recovering AY36 dye from water using batch trials. The fabricated NDAC samples were characterized by FTIR, TGA, DTA, BET, BJH, MP, t-plot, SEM, EDX, and XRD methods. The results showed the successful formation of NDAC with nitrogen mass percentage content (4.21, 8.13 and 9.85%). The NDAC prepared at 800 °C had the largest nitrogen content (9.85%) and was labeled as NDAC800. This later had 727.34 m²/g, 167.11 cm³/g, and 1.97 nm for specific surface area, the monolayer volume and the mean pores diameter respectively. By being the more efficient adsorbent, NDAC800 was chosen to test AY36 dye removal. Therefore, it is selected to investigate the removal of AY36 dye from aqueous solution by varying important parameters such as solution pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage and contact time. The removal of AY36 dye by NDAC800 was pH-dependent, with the optimum pH value 1.5 giving 85.86% removal efficiency and 232.56 mg/g maximum adsorption capacity (Q_m). The kinetic data exhibited the best fit model with the pseudo-second-order (PSOM), while the equilibrium data fit well with the Langmuir (LIM) and Temkin (TIM). The mechanism of AY36 dye adsorption may be ascribed to the electrostatic contact between the dye and the available charged sites on NDAC800 surface. The prepared NDAC800 may be considered as an efficient, available, and eco-friendly adsorbent for AY36 dye adsorption from simulated water.

Biosorption of toxic metal ions (Cr+6, Cd2+) and nutrients (PO43-) from aqueous solution by diatom biomass

This paper evaluates diatom biomass as a biosorbent for removing Cr⁺⁶, Cd²⁺, and PO₄^3- ions from water. The diatom was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDS) for its crystallinity, functional groups, and morphology. A batch sorption study was conducted to evaluate the parameters influencing Cr⁺⁶, Cd²⁺, and PO₄^3- ions adsorption, and the mechanisms were explored. The FTIR spectra revealed Si-O, O-H, N-H, and C-O as the main functional groups present on the surface of the adsorbent. The SEM showed a rough and irregular-shaped morphology, while the EDS indicated that the diatom biomass is an aluminosilicate material. The rate-limiting steps for Cr⁺⁶ and Cd²⁺ were pseudo-first order, and pseudo-second order sorption favored PO₄^3- based on their R² values. Moreover, the dominant adsorption model that best described the equilibrium data was the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained for Cr⁺⁶ was 5.66 (mg/g), and Cd²⁺ was 5.27 (mg/g) at 313 K while PO₄^3- was 19.13 (mg/g) at 298 K. The thermodynamic data revealed that the reaction was endothermic for Cd²⁺ and exothermic for Cr⁺⁶ and PO₄^3-, respectively. Diatom biomass was observed to be a promising bio-sorbent for removing Cr⁶⁺, Cd²⁺ and PO₄^2- from wastewater.

One-step removal of hexavalent chromium in wide pH range using thiourea dioxide: the role of reactive species

One-step removal of hexavalent chromium in a wide pH range is of great significance. In this paper, a single thiourea dioxide (TD) and two-components thiourea dioxide/ethanolamine (MEA) were used as a green reducing agent for the efficient removal of Cr(vi), respectively. The reduction of Cr(vi) and the precipitation of Cr(iii) were carried out simultaneously under this reaction system. The experimental results proved that TD was activated by amine exchange reaction with MEA. In other words, MEA promoted the generation of an active isomeride of TD by changing the equilibrium position of the reversible reaction. After adding MEA, the removal rate of Cr(vi) and total Cr could reach industrial water discharge standards in a wide pH range of 8-12. The change of pH, reduction potential and the decomposition rate of TD were investigated in the reaction processes. Meanwhile, reductive and oxidative reactive species were produced simultaneously during this reaction process. Further, oxidative reactive species (O₂˙^- and ¹O₂) were beneficial for the decomplexation of Cr(iii) complexes and the formation of Cr(iii) precipitation. The experimental results also demonstrated that TD/MEA was effective in practical industrial wastewater. Hence this reaction system has a significant industrial application prospect.

YTHDF2 controls hexavalent chromium-induced mitophagy through modulating Hif1α and Bnip3 decay via the m6A/mRNA pathway in spermatogonial stem cells/progenitors

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the basis of spermatogenesis, and SSC homeostasis is essential for lifelong male fertility. Currently, environmental pollution remains one of the factors affecting human reproductive health. Chromium is a prevalent metal element, and excessive exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) can cause male reproductive disorders. Nevertheless, the toxic effects of Cr (VI) on SSCs and the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we showed that Cr (VI) exposure triggered mitophagy in mouse SSCs/progenitors in a time-dependent manner. Concurrently, Cr (VI) treatment caused reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and activated the HIF1α-mediated BNIP3 expression to trigger mitophagy. In addition, Cr (VI) exposure significantly decreased the level of m⁶A modification. Further, we identified that YTHDF2 regulated the stability of Bnip3 and Hif1α mRNAs in an m⁶A-dependent manner, which was involved in Cr (VI)-induced mitophagy. Collectively, our study not only expands the mechanisms for Cr (VI)-caused male reproductive toxicity, but also provides pharmacological targets for prevention and treatment of Cr (VI)-induced male fertility impairment.

A Comprehensive Review of the Current Progress of Chromium Removal Methods from Aqueous Solution

Chromium (Cr) exists in aqueous solution as trivalent (Cr³⁺) and hexavalent (Cr⁶⁺) forms. Cr³⁺ is an essential trace element while Cr⁶⁺ is a dangerous and carcinogenic element, which is of great concern globally due to its extensive applications in various industrial processes such as textiles, manufacturing of inks, dyes, paints, and pigments, electroplating, stainless steel, leather, tanning, and wood preservation, among others. Cr³⁺ in wastewater can be transformed into Cr⁶⁺ when it enters the environment. Therefore, research on Cr remediation from water has attracted much attention recently. A number of methods such as adsorption, electrochemical treatment, physico-chemical methods, biological removal, and membrane filtration have been devised for efficient Cr removal from water. This review comprehensively demonstrated the Cr removal technologies in the literature to date. The advantages and disadvantages of Cr removal methods were also described. Future research directions are suggested and provide the application of adsorbents for Cr removal from waters.

Ameliorative effect of Nigella sativa conjugated silver nanoparticles against chromium-induced hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity in mice

Hexavalent chromium induces oxidative stress in the liver and kidney. Therefore an in vivo study was designed to investigate the modulatory effect of biosynthesized AgNP against Cr (VI) induced hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The organs index, serum level of ALT, AST, ALP, MDA, total protein and creatinine were measured. The histopathology and micrometry of the liver and kidney were examined. The liver index was significantly increased (0.098 ± 0.13 g) with slight increase in kidney index in Cr exposed group. The serum level of ALT (163.0 ± 5.5 U/L), AST (484.0 ± 10.7 U/L), ALP (337.6 ± 9.6 U/L), MDA (641.2 ± 29.2 U/L), and creatinine (2.9 ± 0.2 mg/dL) were significantly increased (P ≤ 0.05) with significant decrease in total protein level (2.9 ± 0.2 g/dL) (P ≤ 0.05) in chromium treated group. In histopathology, distorted hepatic cords, necrosis, damaged glomerulus and Bowman's capsule were observed. Micrometric studies of the liver and kidney showed significant increase in size of hepatocytes (1188.2 ± 467.7 µ²) and their nuclei (456.4 ± 206.7 µ²), ACSA of Bowman's capsule (11835.5 ± 336.7 µ²) and glomerulus (9051.8 ± 249.8 µ²⁾ in Cr (VI) treated group. The size of brush border (10.1 ± 3.0 µ) was significantly reduced in Cr (VI) treated group however the ACSA of lumen was not significantly changed. With the administration of NSSE and Nigella sativa AgNPs, decreased the oxidative damage caused by Cr (V).

A magnetic MIL-125-NH2@chitosan composite as a separable adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are gradually used since of their huge specific surface area and superior pore structure. However, there are problems such as easy aggregation and difficult separation in water treatment. In this study, we prepared composite microspheres (FMCS-1) by modifying MIL-125-NH₂ with Fe₃O₄ and chitosan. The structural characterization and performance analysis of the materials showed that the introduction of chitosan effectively prevents the stacking of MOFs. The magnetic test manifested that Fe₃O₄ solved the problem of the difficult separation of MOFs from water. The removal potential of toxic Cr(VI) was tested by adsorption experiments. The isotherm model indicated that FMCS-1 is a single molecular layer adsorbent with a maximum adsorption capacity of 109.46 mg/g at pH = 2. The adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) by FMCS-1 was chemical adsorption. The acid resistance test demonstrated that FMCS-1 can exist stably in acid solutions. The recycling experiments proved that the adsorbent can be reused and the removal percentage still reaches 50 % after 5 cycles. This work expands the application of MOFs in water treatment and also provides an effective adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal.

Cr(VI) removal from contaminated waters using ultra-thin layered meixnerite

Cr(VI) is of great concern to public health and environmental safety due to its high toxicity. Here, we report a low-cost yet highly efficient method to prepare a novel LDH, ultra-thin layered meixnerite, which performed superiorly in treatment of aqueous Cr(VI) with little secondary pollution being induced. The produced ultra-thin layered meixnerite was composed of nanoparticles with a thickness of around 7 nm, less than 9 times the thickness of a single LDH layer. The XRD patterns of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite, in which the characteristic diffraction peaks of a typical LDH were weakened or even disappeared, confirmed the successful delamination. This special morphology of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite was not only helpful to its full dispersion in the Cr(VI)-bearing solutions but also facilitated the formation of more active sorption sites on its external surface. As a result, the maximum sorption capacity of UTLM for Cr(VI) removal was 480.9 mg g^-1, far higher than that of OM (196.9 mg g^-1). In addition to electrostatic attraction and anion exchange, the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could also become restacked during removal of aqueous Cr(VI) to generate inner-sphere complexation, finally inducing an enhanced Cr(VI) uptake. Furthermore, XPS analysis characterized the promotion of the break of Al-OH bond with the increase in temperature, and the Cr-O peak increased correspondingly from 29.69% at 25 °C to 48.77% at 85 °C, resulting that the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could remove Cr(VI) more effectively at higher reaction temperatures. Therefore, ultra-thin layered meixnerite is very suitable for future application in treatment of industrial wastewaters with elevated temperatures.
