Rehabilitation of waste rock piles: Impact of acid drainage on potential toxicity by trace elements in plants and soil

Low-toxicity natural pyrite on electro-Fenton catalytic reaction in a wide pH range

The resource utilization of natural pyrite not only reduces secondary pollution but also brings certain environmental benefits. However, the green and efficient use of pyrite presents certain challenges. In this study, a novel electro-Fenton (EF) system was constructed utilizing copper modified graphite felt (GF/Cu) as cathode and natural pyrite (com-FeS2) as catalyst. The results demonstrated that the system exhibited a remarkable stability over an extensive pH range (3.0-10.0) and remained effective even under adverse environmental conditions, such as high salinity or elevated antibiotic concentration. After optimizing the reaction conditions, 0.2 mM sulfamerazine (SMZ) was almost completely degraded within 1.5 h. The results highlighted the catalytic role of Fe(II) on the com-FeS2 surface. Combined with quenching experiments and quantitative analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the removal of SMZ was primarily attributed to the generation of •OH, ordered by 1O2 > •O2- > •OHads, a possible degradation pathway was proposed by HR-LC-MS. The biological toxicity after the reaction was detected, and the introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was beneficial to reduce the biological toxicity of iron dissolution. This work provides new insights into the green and efficient resource utilization of natural pyrite and significantly expands the pH applicability range of the Fenton process, demonstrating the large-scale industrial application potential of pyrite.

Real-time dynamics of aculeate hymenopteran reed gall inquilines in oligotrophic reed beds of anthropogenic and natural origin

This is the first study providing long-term data on the dynamics of bees and wasps and their parasitoids for the evidence-based management of reed beds. Ten years ago, we identified Lipara (Chloropidae) - induced galls on common reed (Phragmites australis, Poaceae) as a critically important resource for specialized bees and wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata). We found that they were surprisingly common in relatively newly formed anthropogenic habitats, which elicited questions about the dynamics of bees and wasps and their parasitoids in newly formed reed beds of anthropogenic origin. Therefore, in the winter and spring of 2022/23, we sampled reed galls from the same set of reed beds of anthropogenic and natural origin as those in 2012/13. At 10 sites, the number of sampled galls was similar in both time periods (80-122% of the value from 2012/13); 12 sites experienced a moderate decline (30-79% of the value from 2012/13), and the number of galls at six sampling sites was only 3-23% of their abundance in 2012/13. Spontaneous development was associated with increasing populations. After 10 years of spontaneous development, the populations of bees and wasps (including their parasitoids) bound to Lipara-induced reed galls increased in abundance and species richness or remained at their previous levels, which was dependent on the sampling site. The only identified threat consisted of reclamation efforts. The effects of habitat age were limited, and the assemblages in habitats of near-natural and anthropogenic origin largely overlapped. However, several species were consistently present at lower abundances in the anthropogenic habitats and vice versa. In conclusion, we provided evidence-based support for the establishment of oligotrophic reed beds of anthropogenic origin as management tools providing sustainable habitats for specialized reed gall-associated aculeate hymenopteran inquilines, including the threatened species.

Unveiling a Technosol-based remediation approach for enhancing plant growth in an iron-rich acidic mine soil from the Rio Tinto Mars analog site

This paper explores the potential of Technosols made from non-hazardous industrial wastes as a sustainable solution for highly acidic iron-rich soils at the Rio Tinto mining site (Spain), a terrestrial Mars analog. These mine soils exhibit extreme acidity (pHH2O = 2.1-3.0), low nutrient availability (non-acid cation saturation < 20 %), and high levels of Pb (3420 mg kg-1), Cu (504 mg kg-1), Zn (415 mg kg-1), and As (319 mg kg-1), hindering plant growth and ecosystem restoration. To address these challenges, the study systematically analyzed selected waste materials, formulated them into Technosols, and conducted a four-month pot trial to evaluate the growth of Brassica juncea under greenhouse conditions. Technosols were tailored by adding varying weight percentages of waste amendments into the mine Technosol, specifically 10 %, 25 %, and 50 %. The waste amendments comprised a blend of organic waste (water clarification sludge, WCS) and inorganic wastes (white steel slag, WSS; and furnace iron slag, FIS). The formulations included: (T0) exclusively mine Technosol (control); (T1) 60 % WCS + 40 % WSS; (T2) 60 % WCS + 40 % FIS; and (T3) 50 % WCS + 16.66 % WSS + 33.33 % FIS. The analyses covered leachate quality, soil pore water chemistry, and plant response (germination and survival rates, plant height, and leaf number). Results revealed a significant reduction in leachable contaminant concentrations, with Pb (26.16 mg kg-1), Zn (4.94 mg kg-1), and Cu (2.29 mg kg-1) dropping to negligible levels and shifting towards less toxic species. These changes improved soil conditions, promoting seed germination and seedling growth. Among the formulations tested, Technosol T1 showed promise in overcoming mine soil limitations, enhancing plant adaptation, buffering against acidification, and stabilizing contaminants through precipitation and adsorption mechanisms. The paper stresses the importance of tailoring waste amendments to specific soil conditions, and highlights the broader implications of the Technosol approach, such as waste valorization, soil stabilization, and insights for Brassica juncea growth in extreme environments, including Martian soil simulants.

A Green Solution for the Rehabilitation of Marginal Lands: The Case of Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet Grown in Technosols

Reclamation of abandoned mining areas can be a potentially viable solution to tackle three major problems: waste mismanagement, environmental contamination, and growing food demand. This study aims to evaluate the rehabilitation of mining areas into agricultural production areas using integrated biotechnology and combining Technosols with a multipurpose (forage, food, ornamental and medicinal) drought-resistant legume, the Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet. Two Technosols were prepared by combining gossan waste (GW) from an abandoned mining area with a mix of low-cost organic and inorganic materials. Before and after plant growth, several parameters were analysed, such as soil physicochemical characteristics, nutritional status, bioavailable concentrations of potentially hazardous elements (PHE), soil enzymatic activities, and development and accumulation of PHE in Lablab, among others. Both Technosols improved physicochemical conditions, nutritional status and microbiological activity, and reduced the bioavailability of most PHE (except As) of GW. Lablab thrived in both Technosols and showed PHE accumulation mainly in the roots, with PHE concentrations in the shoots that are safe for cattle and sheep consumption. Thus, this is a potential plant that, in conjunction with Technosols, constitutes a potential integrated biotechnology approach for the conversion of marginal lands, such as abandoned mining areas, into food-production areas.

Assessment of seasonal changes in groundwater quality of waste rock dump in temperate continental climate, northern Japan

Understanding seasonal groundwater quality changes in temperate continental climate waste rock dumps (WRDs) is necessary for sustainable environmental risk prevention and legacy mine contamination management. Therefore, we conducted a field investigation of a WRD to determine the mechanisms controlling its groundwater quality dynamics. The research aimed to understand the impact of seasonal changes on heavy metals released from the WRD. Three monitoring wells were installed in the WRD to investigate the pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and groundwater level (GL). The mineral composition of the waste rock was determined. Groundwater and river water samples from the monitoring wells and rivers surrounding the WRD were collected for chemical analysis. The sphalerite and galena concentrated in the WRD were assumed to be the main sources of Zn, Pb, and Cd contamination. Summer rainfall was the dominant recharge source of river water, which rapidly infiltrated to the WRD, altering the pH, EC, and GL of the groundwater. The pH, EC, and GL were stable in winter because snowpack covering the surface soil prevented groundwater recharge to the WRD. However, snow melting affected the pH, EC, and GL in the WRD. The sources of groundwater recharge (rainfall, river water, and snowmelt) altered the behaviour of the heavy metals in the WRD through two main mechanisms: the dissolution of sulphide minerals and efflorescent salts upon contact with the recharge water, and the dilution effect of the recharge water, which mixes with the groundwater in the WRD, reducing the heavy metal concentration. Sulphide mineral and efflorescent salt dissolution were significant in the deepest monitoring well and rainfall was the dominant recharge source which increased sulphide mineral and efflorescent salt dissolution in the WRD.

Spatiotemporal evolution of U and Th isotopes in a mine effluent highly polluted by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)

The spatiotemporal evolution of both U and Th isotopes in a mine effluent highly polluted by acid mine drainage (AMD) was evaluated. The acidic tributary, which born from the outflows of an abandoned sulfide mine, flows into the Odiel River. AMD comprises an important source of natural radionuclides, presenting concentrations of ²³⁸U and ²³²Th, two and four orders of magnitude higher, respectively, than the background values of surface continental waters. These natural radionuclides behave conservatively along the mine effluent (pH < 2.5) throughout the hydrological year. Under AMD conditions uranium is in the hexavalent state U(VI) and the main dissolved species are uranyl sulfate complexes. The polluted tributary has a significant impact on the Odiel River acidifying its waters during the low flow season and increasing up to one order of magnitude the activity concentrations of U and Th isotopes. U presented a conservative behavior in the Odiel River during the low flow season (pH ≈ 3), however it is removed from the liquid phase in the wet season (pH ≈ 6), probably due its coprecipitation/adsorption onto Al-phases. Th shows a high sensitivity to small increases of pH, and it is strongly coprecipitated/adsorbed with or onto Fe-oxyhydroxydizes in the river.

Artificial Intelligence Applied to Improve Scientific Reviews: The Antibacterial Activity of Cistus Plants as Proof of Concept

Reviews have traditionally been based on extensive searches of the available bibliography on the topic of interest. However, this approach is frequently influenced by the authors' background, leading to possible selection bias. Artificial intelligence applied to natural language processing (NLP) is a powerful tool that can be used for systematic reviews by speeding up the process and providing more objective results, but its use in scientific literature reviews is still scarce. This manuscript addresses this challenge by developing a reproducible tool that can be used to develop objective reviews on almost every topic. This tool has been used to review the antibacterial activity of Cistus genus plant extracts as proof of concept, providing a comprehensive and objective state of the art on this topic based on the analysis of 1601 research manuscripts and 136 patents. Data were processed using a publicly available Jupyter Notebook in Google Collaboratory here. NLP, when applied to the study of antibacterial activity of Cistus plants, is able to recover the main scientific manuscripts and patents related to the topic, avoiding any biases. The NLP-assisted literature review reveals that C. creticus and C. monspeliensis are the first and second most studied Cistus species respectively. Leaves and fruits are the most commonly used plant parts and methanol, followed by butanol and water, the most widely used solvents to prepare plant extracts. Furthermore, Staphylococcus. aureus followed by Bacillus. cereus are the most studied bacterial species, which are also the most susceptible bacteria in all studied assays. This new tool aims to change the actual paradigm of the review of scientific literature to make the process more efficient, reliable, and reproducible, according to Open Science standards.

Impact of Biochar Amendment on Soil Properties and Organic Matter Composition in Trace Element-Contaminated Soil

The application of biochar as an organic amendment in polluted soils can facilitate their recovery by reducing the availability of contaminants. In the present work, the effect of biochar application to acid soils contaminated by heavy metal spillage is studied to assess its effect on the quantity and composition of soil organic matter (SOM), with special attention given to soil humic acids (HAs). This effect is poorly known and of great importance, as HA is one of the most active components of SOM. The field experiment was carried out in 12 field plots of fluvisols, with moderate and high contamination by trace elements (called MAS and AS, respectively), that are located in the Guadiamar Green Corridor (SW Spain), which were amended with 8 Mg·ha⁻¹ of olive pit biochar (OB) and rice husk biochar (RB). The results indicate that 22 months after biochar application, a noticeable increase in soil water holding capacity, total organic carbon content, and soil pH were observed. The amounts of oxidisable carbon (C) and extracted HAs in the soils were not altered due to biochar addition. Thermogravimetric analyses of HAs showed an increase in the abundance of the most thermostable OM fraction of the MAS (375–650 °C), whereas the HAs of AS were enriched in the intermediate fraction (200–375 °C). Spectroscopic and chromatographic analyses indicate that the addition of biochar did not alter the composition of the organic fraction of HAs, while Cu, Fe, and as were considerably accumulated at HAs.

Geochemical Partitioning of Heavy Metals and Metalloids in the Ecosystems of Abandoned Mine Sites: A Case Study within the Moscow Brown Coal Basin

Significant environmental impacts of mining activities connected with high-sulfur materials result from the production of acid mine drainage and potentially toxic elements, which easily migrate to adjacent ecosystems due to the typical absence of vegetation on spoil heaps and toeslope talus mantle. In this paper, we present the results of the first comprehensive study of the ecosystems affected by acidic and metal-enriched (Al, Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, and Zn) mine drainage conducted at spoil heaps and adjacent talus mantle under semihumid climate conditions within the Moscow Brown Coal Basin (Central Russian Upland, Tula Region, Russia). A total of 162 samples were collected, including 98 soil samples, 42 surface water samples, and 22 plant samples (aerial tissues of birch). Coal talus mantle materials of Regosols were characterized by the increased concentration of water-soluble Ca, K, Mg, and S, and all mobile fractions of Al, Co, S, and Zn. The chemical composition of birch samples within the zones affected by acid mine drainage differed insignificantly from those in the unpolluted ecosystems with black soils, due to the high tolerance of birch to such conditions. Differences between the affected and undisturbed sites in terms of the chemical composition decreased in the following order: waters > soils > plants. The geochemical characterization of plants and soils in coal mining areas is essential for the mitigation of negative consequences of mining activities.

Biochar ageing in polluted soils and trace elements immobilisation in a 2-year field experiment

Biochar application to soils has become a focus of research during the last decade due to its high potential for C sequestration. Nevertheless, there is no exhaustive information on the long-term effects of biochar application in soils contaminated with trace elements. In this work, a 2-year field experiment was conducted comprising the application of different types of biochar to acidic and moderately acidic soils with high concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, Ba and Zn. In addition, representative samples of each biochar were buried in permeable bags that allowed the flow of water and microorganisms but not their physical interaction with soil aggregates. The biochars significantly adsorbed trace elements from polluted soils. However, given the high total concentration of these persistent trace elements in the soils, the application of biochars did not succeed in reducing the concentration of available metals (CaCl₂ extractable fraction). After 2 years of ageing under field conditions, some degradation of the biochars from olive pit, rice husk and wood were observed. This study provides novel information concerning the biochar alterations during ageing in polluted soils, as the decrease of aryl C signal observed by ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and the presence of O-containing groups shown by Fourier Transform mid-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) in aged biochar which enhanced trace elements adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed slight changes on surface morphology of aged biochar particles.

Insight into the Adaptability of Dominant Plant Indigofera amblyantha Craib for Ecological Restoration of Rock Slopes in Stone Coal Mine

The eco-restoration was a very effective measure to solve the problem of environmental pollution caused by the exposed mine surface in the stone coal mine site. In this study, the dominant plant, Indigofera amblyantha Craib, was well adapted to the eco-restoration in stone coal mining area. The changes of nutrient elements, pH, heavy metals in substrate material, the biological concentration/transfer factor, and the distribution and diversity of bacteria and fungi in rhizosphere soil were investigated. The results show that the plant communities help slow down the loss of nutrient elements and the increase of the concentrations of heavy metals in the eco-restoration process. The Indigofera amblyantha Craib had the advantaged ability to enrich and transfer Cd, Cu, Mn, and its diversity index of microbial communities in rhizosphere soils was higher than that of other quadrats. These excellent properties found in this work help reveal the insight into the adaptability of Indigofera amblyantha Craib in the eco-restoration of stone coal mines. It is valuable to evaluate Indigofera amblyantha Craib for eco-restoration engineering of stone coal mine and extend the application in heavy metal contaminated sites.

The Absorption and Distribution of Heavy Metals of Dominant Plant for Ecological Restoration of Stone Coal Mine

The exposed slopes formed by stone mining had caused serious problems of environmental pollution. The ecological restoration was a very effective measure to solve it. In this study, the Indigofera amblyantha Craib was the dominant species in the ecorestoration during the first two years of ecological restoration, which was based on analyzing the importance value (IV) and diversity indexes of plant species. Meanwhile, the ecorestoration process helps slow down the increase of the concentrations of some heavy metals in the substrate material; however, the changing trends of these metals were not uniform. The root and leaf were the main parts of heavy metal distribution, respectively, corresponding to Pb, Cr, As, Sb, and Ni in root and Cu, Mn, and V in leaf. It confirmed that Indigofera amblyantha Craib had an advantage ability to enrich and transfer Cd, Cu, and Mn obtained from their biological concentration factor (BCF) and biological transfer factor (BTF). The Sb, Cd, and V were the main factors affecting the IV by the redundancy analysis. These fine characters of Indigofera amblyantha Craib help explain it well adapted to the ecorestoration of stone coal mines. The current results are valuable to evaluate and extend the application in ecorestoration engineering of mining areas and other heavy metal-contaminated sites.

Plant response to mycorrhizal inoculation and amendments on a contaminated soil

Understanding the combined effects of soil amendments and inoculation of mycorrhizal fungi on the response of different plant species during the phytostabilization process of trace elements contaminated soils is a challenge. This task is more difficult but more realistic when studied under field conditions. We assess the combined effects of two amendment doses and mycorrhizal inoculation on the response of saplings of two tree species planted in a contaminated field. The amendments were a mix of sugar beet lime and biosolid compost. The inoculation treatments were made with a commercial inoculum of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for wild olive and ectomycorrhizal fungi for stone pine. Results showed a weak or null effect of the mycorrhizal inoculation on plant growth, survival and trace element accumulation. There was a significant increase on P nutrition for stone pine, growing on non-amended conditions. Soil amendments were very effective reducing trace elements availability and their accumulation in both plant species, especially in roots. However, the effects on plant biomass were species-dependent and contrasted; low-dose amendments increased the biomass of wild olive by 33.3%, but reduced by 28% that of pine. The high doses of amendments (60 T ha^-1) produced some negative effects on plant growth and nutrition, probably related to the increase of soil salinity. Both plant species, stone pine and wild olive, have been proved to be adequate for phytostabilization of contaminated soils under Mediterranean climate, due to their drought tolerance and the low transfer of trace elements from root to shoot, thus reducing toxicity for the food web. To implement microbial-assisted phytoremediation approaches, a better understanding of the diversity and ecology of plant-associated microorganisms is needed. The use of indigenous fungi, locally adapted and tolerant to contamination, would be more suitable for phytostabilization purposes.
