A novel, Z-scheme ZnO@AC@FeO photocatalyst, suitable for the intensification of photo-mediated peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance, reactivity and bisphenol A degradation pathways

Metronidazole degradation mechanism by sono-photo-Fenton processes using a spinel ferrite cobalt on activated carbon catalyst

A heterogeneous catalyst was prepared by anchoring spinel cobalt ferrite nanoparticles on porous activated carbon (SCF@AC). The catalyst was tested to activate hydrogen peroxide (HP) in the Fenton degradation of metronidazole (MTZ). SCF nanoparticles were produced through the co-precipitation of iron and cobalt metal salts in an alkaline condition. Elemental mapping, physico-chemical, morphological, structural, and magnetic properties of the as-fabricated catalyst were analyzed utilizing EDX mapping, FESEM-EDS, TEM, BET, XRD, and VSM techniques. The porous structure of AC enhanced the catalytic activity of SCF by a significant decrease in the agglomeration of SCF nanoparticles. The effectiveness of SCF@AC in Fenton degradation improved substantially when UV light and ultrasound (US) irradiations were induced, most likely due to the strong synergistic effect between the catalyst and these irradiation sources. The photo-Fenton system was more efficient than the Fenton, sono-, and sono-photo-Fenton processes eliminating both MTZ and TOC. It was found that AC not only dispersed SCF nanoparticles and improved the stability of the catalyst, but also provided a high adsorption capacity of MTZ, resulting in a faster degradation. After 60 min of the photo-Fenton reaction, the elimination efficiencies of MTZ (30 mg L-1) and TOC were 97 and 42.1% under optimum operational conditions (pH = 3.0, HP = 4.0 mM, SCF@AC = 0.3 g L-1, and UV = 6 W). SCF@AC showed excellent stability with low leaching of metal ions during the reaction. Radical and non-radical (O2•-, HO•, and 1O2 species), alongside adsorption and photocatalysis mechanisms, were responsible for MTZ decontamination over the SCF@AC/HP/UV system. A comprehensive study on the HP activation mechanism and MTZ degradation pathway was obtained through scavenging tests. The findings demonstrate that SCF@AC is an effective, reusable, and environmentally sustainable catalyst for advanced oxidation processes that can effectively remove organic pollutants from wastewater. This study offers valuable insights into the feasibility of employing SCF@AC catalysts in Fenton-based processes for the degradation of MTZ.

Tungsten-based nanocatalysts with different structures for visible light responsive photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Environmental pollution, such as water contamination, is a critical issue that must be absolutely addressed. Here, three different morphologies of tungsten-based photocatalysts (WO3 nanorods, WO3/WS2 nanobricks, WO3/WS2 nanorods) are made using a simple hydrothermal method by changing the solvents (H2O, DMF, aqueous HCl solution). The as-prepared nanocatalysts have excellent thermal stability, large porosity, and high hydrophilicity. The results show all materials have good photocatalytic activity in aqueous media, with WO3/WS2 nanorods (NRs) having the best activity in the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under visible-light irradiation. This may originate from increased migration of charge carriers and effective prevention of electron‒hole recombination in WO3/WS2 NRs, whereby this photocatalyst is able to generate more reactive •OH and •O2- species, leading to greater photocatalytic activity. About 99.6% of BPA is photodegraded within 60 min when using 1.5 g/L WO3/WS2 NRs and 5.0 mg/L BPA at pH 7.0. Additionally, the optimal conditions (pH, catalyst dosage, initial BPA concentration) for WO3/WS2 NRs are also elaborately investigated. These rod-like heterostructures are expressed as potential catalysts with excellent photostability, efficient reusability, and highly active effectivity in different types of water. In particular, the removal efficiency of BPA by WO3/WS2 NRs reduces by only 1.5% after five recycling runs and even reaches 89.1% in contaminated lake water. This study provides promising insights for the nearly complete removal of BPA from wastewater or different water resources, which is advantageous to various applications in environmental remediation.

A novel photo-enzyme platform based on non-metallic modified carbon nitride for removal of bisphenol A in water

A nonmetallic composite photocatalyst with 2D/2D structure was prepared by hydrothermal in-situ polymerization and used for the immobilization of cytochrome C (Cyt c). The photo-enzyme coupling system has a very high enzyme load, which can reach 528.29 mg g-1 after optimization. Compared with free Cyt c, Cytc/PEDOT/CN showed better enzymatic activity, stability and catalytic efficiency. Even after being stored at 100 °C for 60 min, the enzyme activity remained at 49.42 % and remained at 57.89 % after 8 cycles. Moreover, Cytc0.5/PEDOT3/CN showed excellent photocatalytic degradation performance in the degradation experiment of bisphenol A (BPA), reaching 68.22 % degradation rate within 60 min, which was 3.9 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 and 1.61 times higher than that of pure PEDOT3/CN. This study shows that the introduction of conductive polymers is of great significance to the photo-enzyme coupling system and provides a new strategy for the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater.

Catalytic PMS oxidation universality of CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions at multiple application scenarios

The magnetic CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions were prepared by hydrothermal method, and the effect of different reaction temperature on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activity was investigated. The CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions prepared at 100 °C can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at multiple application scenarios for degradation and mineralization of tetracycline, o-nitrophenol and ceftriaxone sodium under indoor light, visible light and dark condition. Additionally, the CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system showed high catalytic activity and anti-interference ability for degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants in natural water bodies and industrial wastewater. The TC removal efficiency in Qianhu Lake water, Ganjiang River water and tap water was about 88%, 92% and 89%, respectively. The CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system is also effective for actual pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with 77.9% of COD removal efficiency. Interestingly, the reactive species of CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system under visible light are different from those in dark condition, and the different catalytic mechanisms at multiple application scenarios were proposed. This work provides new insights into mechanism exploration of heterojunction catalyst for PMS activation.

Fe and Zn co-doped carbon nanoparticles as peroxymonosulfate activator for efficient 2,4-dichorophenol degradation

Iron-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been of great interest for the effective removal of contaminants, but it still suffered from ineffective metal redox cycle rate, which resulted in unsatisfactory catalytic efficiency. Constructing bimetallic carbonaceous materials was effective way to improve the catalytic performance of iron-based heterogeneous system. In this study, magnetic bimetallic porous carbon composite (FZCx) was synthesized via Fe/Zn bi-MOFs pyrolysis for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation by peroxymonosulfate. Influences of different systems exhibited that 100% of 2,4-DCP was rapidly degraded at the conditions of catalyst dosage = 0.1 g L-1, PMS = 0.5 mM and initial pH = 9.0 within 30 min. The as-prepared FZC600 displayed excellent reusability and stability. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis manifested that SO4·- and 1O2 were primarily responsible for the rapid degradation of 2,4-DCP. Moreover, XPS, EPR and EIS was used to elaborate the bimetallic synergy effect, proving that the introduction of zinc can effectively promote periodic cycle of Fe2+/Fe3+ and improve catalysts durability and reusability. These findings highlighted the preparation of bimetallic based carbonaceous material with excellent PMS activation ability to remove refractory organics from wastewater and provided a depth insight into the promotion of bimetal synergy between zinc and iron on PMS activation process.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by biochar-supported Fe3O4 derived from oily sludge to enhance the oxidative degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Carbon materials used for catalysis in advanced oxidation processes tend to be obtained from cheap and readily available raw materials. We constructed a carbon material, OSC@Fe3O4, by loading Fe3O4 onto the pyrolyzed hazardous waste oily sludge. OSC@Fe3O4 was then used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) from water. At 298 K, 0.2 g⋅L-1 of catalyst and 0.3 g⋅L-1 of PMS, the reaction rate constant of the OSC@I-2/PMS system reached 0.079 min-1, with a TTCH removal efficiency of 92.6%. The degradation efficiency of TTCH remained at 81% after five cycles. The specific surface area and pore volume of OSC@I-2 were 263.9 m2⋅g-1 and 0.42 cm3⋅g-1, respectively, which improved the porous structure of the carbon material and provided more active points, thus improving the catalytic performance. N and S were doped into the oily sludge carbon due to the presence of N- and S-containing compounds in the raw oily sludge. N and S doping led to more electron-rich sites with higher negative charges in OSC@I-2 and gave the oily sludge carbon a higher affinity to PMS, thereby promoting its ability to activate PMS. Sulfate radicals (SO4•‾) played a dominant role in the degradation of TTCH, with demethylation and the breaking of double bonds being a possible degradation pathway. A biotoxicity test showed that the microbial toxicity of the degradation intermediates was significantly reduced. This work provides a strategy for the application of PMS-based catalysts derived from waste carbon resources.

Investigation of manganese-iron oxide nanocomposite immobilized on powdered activated carbon as an efficient activator of peroxymonosulfate for antibiotics degradation: Conjunction of adsorption, radical and nonradical processes

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have gained considerable attention for their efficient oxidation of persistent pollutants. A two-step chemical co-precipitation method was used to prepare a bimetallic nanocomposite (MnOx@Fe3O4) consisting of manganese oxides and ferroferric oxides, supported by powdered activated carbon (PAC). The synthesis of MnOx@Fe3O4-PAC (MFP) was aimed to enhance the degradation efficiency of oxytetracycline (OTC) via the simultaneous adsorption and oxidation processes on the solid-liquid interface. The OTC degradation process in the MFP/PMS system could be well described by pseudo-first-order kinetics. A wide pH range (3-6) was acceptable for MFP to degrade OTC via PMS activation with the highest removal efficiency reaching up to 85.6% (OTC0 = 150 mg/L), while a 60.8% removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was also attained simultaneously. SO4•- and 1O2, which were bound to the surface, played a crucial role as reactive oxygen species in the degradation of OTC. The combination of PAC, Fe3O4, and MnOx of MFP could enhance the degradation efficiency of OTC and fetch up their defects of separate application. The deduced OTC degradation pathway relied on the findings from UPLC-MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Noteworthy, MFP maintained efficient catalysis performance in the five cycles of stability experiment with neglectable loss of manganese and iron. These results provide valuable understanding of the conjunction of adsorption, radical, and nonradical processes driven by MFP for OTC degradation.

Cobalt-aluminum spinel supported on modified γ-alumina for peroxymonosulfate activation: Si-Al ratio of support to optimize performance and reusability

The development of cobalt-based supported catalysts with high PMS catalytic activity and stability by adjusting the composition of the support is highly desirable yet remains scarce. In the work, a series of catalysts (Co2AlO4/Al2O3-xSiO2) were prepared by impregnation and high-temperature calcination using Al2O3-xSiO2 with a low Si-Al ratio as the support. Measurement techniques such as XRD, XPS, UV-DRS, FTIR, BET, SEM and HRTEM were used to characterize textural and chemical properties (ratio of Co3+/Co2+, specific surface area, pore size, pore volume, etc.). The ratio of Co3+/Co2+ and pore volume of Co2AlO4/Al2O3-xSiO2 can be turned by controlling the ratio of Si to Al, which are closely related to the catalytic performance and reusability of the catalysts. The optimized catalyst (Co2AlO4/Al2O3-0.25SiO2) can completely degrade 10 mg/L p-nitrophenol (PNP) in 40 min in the pH range of 3-9 with excellent reusability. The effects of several reaction parameters (i.e., PMS dosage, Co2AlO4/Al2O3-0.25SiO2 dosage, reaction temperature, initial pH value, and inorganic ions) on PNP removal were comprehensively investigated. Sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are making a major contribution to the degradation of PNP. Moreover, a millimeter-scale catalyst (CoSiAl-0.25/Al2O3 pellet) was prepared by sol adsorption and high-temperature calcination method, which maintained high oxidation activity after treatment of 18 L wastewater (PNP of 10 mg/L) in a continuous flow process. The method is simple and easy to operate on a large scale, providing a new perspective on the design and preparation of cobalt-aluminum spinel catalysts for activated PMS.

Single-atom Zr embedded Ti4O7 anode coupling with hierarchical CuFe2O4 particle electrodes toward efficient electrooxidation of actual pharmaceutical wastewater

Electrocatalytic oxidation is commonly restricted by low degradation efficiency, slow mass transfer, and high energy consumption. Herein, a synergetic electrocatalysis system was developed for removal of various drugs, i.e., atenolol, florfenicol, and diclofenac sodium, as well as actual pharmaceutical wastewater, where the newly-designed single-atom Zr embedded Ti4O7 (Zr/Ti4O7) and hierarchical CuFe2O4 (CFO) microspheres were used as anode and microelectrodes, respectively. In the optimal reaction system, the degradation efficiencies of 40 mg L-1 atenolol, florfenicol, and diclofenac sodium could achieve up to 98.8%, 93.4%, and 85.5% in 120 min with 0.1 g L-1 CFO at current density of 25 mA cm-2. More importantly, in the flow-through reactor, the electrooxidation lasting for 150 min could reduce the COD of actual pharmaceutical wastewater from 432 to 88.6 mg L-1, with a lower energy consumption (25.67 kWh/m3). Meanwhile, the electrooxidation system maintained superior stability and environmental adaptability. DFT theory calculations revealed that the excellent performance of this electrooxidation system could be ascribed to the striking features of the reduced reaction energy barrier by single-atom Zr loading and abundant oxygen vacancies on the Zr/Ti4O7 surface. Moreover, the characterization and experimental results demonstrated that the CFO unique hierarchical structure and synergistic effect between electrodes were also the important factors that could improve the system performance. The findings shed light on the single-atom material design for boosting electrochemical oxidation performance.

Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A by temperature-sensitive magnetic hydrogel with enhanced service life

Easy diffusion and low reusability limit the practicality of photocatalysts. In this study, a hollow sphere (HS) heterojunction was synthesized based on oxygen-doped carbon nitride (OCN) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs). A thermosensitive HS hydrogel (HS Gel) was prepared by mixing HS with N-isopropylacrylamide. Bisphenol A (BPA), being widely manufactured and used in commercial and domestical products and its high toxicity, was chosen as the target pollutant to demonstrate the photocatalytic ability and practicality of the HS Gel. HS Gel presented effective BPA degradation (95% degradation in 70 mins, 4.2 × 10-2 min-1 of kobs) at ambient temperature which is much better than kobs = 1.8 × 10-2 min-1 of OCN and kobs = 0.08 × 10-2 min-1 of LDH), and increased by two-fold the recycling service life (retention of >80% degradation efficiency after 13 usage cycles) compared to other carbon-based photocatalysts (retention of >80% degradation efficiency after 5-6 usage cycles). This is due to its multifunctional characteristics (magnetic property and thermal sensitivity). Under ambient temperature, the hydrophilic HS Gel swelled in the aqueous solution, which promoted the photocatalytic reaction between HS and BPA in the gel state. After the reaction, the HS Gel was subjected to shrinkage by high temperature heating to enhance the mechanical strength for recovery. The magnetic recovery was realized by the paramagnetic properties of layered double oxide to reduce environmental interference. Detailed studies of HS gel related to enhanced service life were conducted including structural changes, catalyst leaking and magnetic changing. A new kind of type Ӏ plus Z-scheme mechanism was also proposed based on the Kubelka-Munk equation, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Mott-Schotty technique.

Peroxymonosulfate assisted pesticide breakdown: Unveiling the potential of a novel S-scheme ZnO@CoFe2O4 photo-catalyst, anchored on activated carbon

A ternary hetero-junction was prepared by anchoring ZnO@CoFe2O4 (ZCF) on activated carbon (AC) and employed as a UV-assisted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator to boost the degradation of diazinon (DZN) pesticide. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the ZCFAC hetero-junction were characterized through a series of techniques. The highest degradation efficiency of DZN (100% in 90 min) was achieved by the PMS-mediated ZCFAC/UV system, superior to other single or binary catalytic systems due to the strong synergistic effect between ZCFAC, PMS, and UV. The operating reaction conditions, synergistic effects, and the possible pathways of DZN degradation were investigated and discussed. Optical analysis showed that the band-gap energy of the ZCFAC hetero-junction not only enhanced the absorption of UV light but also reduced the recombination of photo-induced electron/hole pairs. Both radical and non-radical species (HO•, SO4•-, O2•-, 1O2, and h+) took part in the photo-degradation of DZN, assessed by scavenging tests. It was found that AC as a carrier not only improved the catalytic activity of CF and ZnO nanoparticles and conferred high stability for the catalyst but also played a crucial role in accelerating the catalytic PMS activation mechanism. Moreover, the PMS-mediated ZCFAC/UV system showed good reusability, universality, and practical applicability potential. Overall, this work explored an efficient strategy for the best use of hetero-structure photo-catalysts towards PMS activation to achieve high performance in decontaminating organic compounds.

The synergistic degradation of pollutants in water by photocatalysis and PMS activation

In recent years, the synergistic degradation of water pollutants through advanced oxidation technology has emerged as a prominent research area due to its integration of various advanced oxidation technologies. The combined utilization of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology and photocatalysis demonstrates mild and nontoxic characteristics, enabling the degradation of water pollutants across a wide pH range. Moreover, this approach reduces the efficiency of electron hole recombination, broadens the catalyst's light response range, facilitates electron transfer of PMS, and ultimately improves its photocatalytic performance. The paper reviews the current research status of photocatalytic technology and PMS activation technology, respectively, while highlighting the advancements achieved through the integration of photocatalytic synergetic PMS activation technology for water pollutant degradation. Furthermore, this review delves into the mechanisms involving both free radicals and nonradicals in the reaction process and presents a promising prospect for future development in water treatment technology. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Degradation of water pollutants by photocatalysis and PMS synergistic action has emerged. Synergism can enhance the generation of free radicals. This technology can provide theoretical support for actual wastewater treatment.

Magnetic Carbon Quantum Dots/Iron Oxide Composite Based on Waste Rice Noodle and Iron Oxide Scale: Preparation and Photocatalytic Capability

To provide an economical magnetic photocatalyst and introduce an innovative approach for efficiently utilizing discarded waste rice noodle (WRN) and iron oxide scale (IOS), we initially converted WRN into carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using a hydrothermal method, simultaneously calcining IOS to obtain iron oxide (FeOx). Subsequently, we successfully synthesized a cost-effective, magnetic CQDs/FeOx photocatalytic composite for the first time by combining the resulting CQDs and FeOx. Our findings demonstrated that calcining IOS in an air atmosphere enhanced the content of photocatalytically active α-Fe2O3, while incorporating WRN-based CQDs into FeOx improved the electron-hole pair separation, resulting in increased O2 reduction and H2O oxidation. Under optimized conditions (IOS calcination temperature: 300 °C; carbon loading: 11 wt%), the CQDs/FeOx composite, utilizing WRN and IOS as its foundation, exhibited exceptional and reusable capabilities in photodegrading methylene blue and tetracycline. Remarkably, for methylene blue, it achieved an impressive degradation rate of 99.30% within 480 min, accompanied by a high degradation rate constant of 5.26 × 10-3 min-1. This composite demonstrated reusability potential for up to ten photocatalytic cycles without a significant reduction in the degradation efficiency, surpassing the performance of IOS and FeOx without CQDs. Notably, the composite exhibited strong magnetism with a saturation magnetization strength of 34.7 emu/g, which enables efficient and convenient recovery in photocatalytic applications. This characteristic is highly advantageous for the large-scale industrial utilization of photocatalytic water purification.

Spinel cobalt ferrite-based porous activated carbon in conjunction with UV light irradiation for boosting peroxymonosulfate oxidation of bisphenol A

Developing heterogeneous catalysts with high performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to decontaminate organic pollutants from wastewater is of prominent importance. In this study, spinel cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) materials were coated on the surface of powdered activated carbon (CoFe₂O₄@PAC) via the facile co-precipitation method. The high specific surface area of PAC was beneficial for the adsorption of both bisphenol A (BP-A) and PMS molecules. The CoFe₂O₄@PAC-mediated PMS activation process under UV light could effectively eliminate 99.4% of the BP-A within 60 min of reaction. A significant synergy effect was attained between CoFe₂O₄ and PAC towards PMS activation and subsequent elimination of BP-A. Comparative tests demonstrated that the heterogeneous CoFe₂O₄@PAC catalyst had a better degradation performance in comparison with its components and homogeneous catalysts (Fe, Co, and, Fe + Co ions). The formed by-products and intermediates during BP-A decontamination were evaluated using LC/MS analysis, and then a possible degradation pathway was proposed. Moreover, the prepared catalyst exhibited excellent performance in recyclability with slight leaching amounts of Co and Fe ions. A TOC conversion of 38% was obtained after five consecutive reaction cycles. It can be concluded that the PMS photo-activation process via the CoFe₂O₄@PAC catalyst can be utilized as an effective and promising method for the degradation of organic contaminants from polluted-water resources.

Stable and recyclable FeS-CMC-based peroxydisulfate activation for effective bisphenol A reduction: performance and mechanism

In this study, a novel material, iron sulfide modified by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (FeS-CMC), was successfully synthetized for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation to remove bisphenol A (BPA). Characterization results showed that FeS-CMC had more attachment sites for PDS activation due to its higher specific surface area. A stronger negative potential contributed to preventing nanoparticles from reuniting in the reaction and improving the interparticle electrostatic interactions of the materials. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis of FeS-CMC suggested that the coordination of the ligand for combining sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with FeS was monodentate. A total of 98.4% BPA was decomposed by the FeS-CMC/PDS system after 20 min under optimized conditions (pH = 3.60, [FeS-CMC] = 0.05 g/L and [PDS] = 0.88 mM). The isoelectric point (pH_pzc) of FeS-CMC is 5.20, and FeS-CMC contributed to reducing BPA under acidic conditions but showed a negative effect under basic conditions. The presence of HCO₃^-, NO₃^- and HA inhibited BPA degradation by FeS-CMC/PDS, while excess Cl^- accelerated the reaction. FeS-CMC exhibited excellent performance in oxidation resistance with a final removal degree of 95.0%, while FeS was only 20.0%. Furthermore, FeS-CMC showed excellent reusability and still reached 90.2% after triple reusability experiments. The study confirmed that the homogeneous reaction was the primary part of the system. Surface-bound Fe(II) and S (-II) were found to be the major electron donors during activation, and the reduction of S (-II) contributed to the cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II). Sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (O₂^•-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) were produced at the surface of FeS-CMC and accelerated the decomposition of BPA. This study offered a theoretical basis for improving the oxidation resistance and reusability of iron-based materials in the presence of advanced oxidation processes.

Structure of a novel Co-based heterogeneous catalyst via Mn3(PO4)2 as a carrier to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for improving degradation of sulfonamides

Effective degradation of sulfonamides (SAs) in water is of global importance for decreasing its pathogenicity and bioaccumulation. In this study, Mn₃(PO₄)₂ was used as a carrier to fabricate a novel and high-efficient catalyst with Co₃O₄ anchored (Co₃O₄@Mn₃(PO₄)₂) for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade SAs. Surprisingly, the catalyst exhibited superior performance, and nearly 100% of SAs (10 mg L^-1) including sulfamethazine (SMZ), sulfadimethoxine (SDM), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and sulfisoxazole (SIZ) was degraded by Co₃O₄@Mn₃(PO₄)₂-activated PMS within 10 min. A series of characterization of the Co₃O₄@Mn₃(PO₄)₂ composite were conducted and the main operational parameters of SMZ degradation were investigated. SO₄^•-, •OH, and ¹O₂ were determined to be the dominating reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for the degradation of SMZ. Co₃O₄@Mn₃(PO₄)₂ also exhibited excellent stability and the removal rate of SMZ still maintained over 99% even in the fifth cycle. The plausible pathways and mechanisms of SMZ degradation in the system of Co₃O₄@Mn₃(PO₄)₂/PMS were deduced on the basis of the analyses of LCMS/MS and XPS. This is the first report on high-efficient heterogeneous activating PMS by mooring Co₃O₄ on Mn₃(PO₄)₂ to degrade SAs, which provides us with a strategy to structure novel bimetallic catalysts for PMS activation.

Magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon for activated peroxymonosulfate removal of oxytetracycline from water: Radical and non-radical pathways

In this work, magnetic CuFe₂O₄ was prepared for the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) by a self-propagating combustion synthesis method. Almost complete degradation (99.65%) of OTC was achieved within 25 min at [OTC]₀ = 10 mg/L, [PMS]₀ = 0.05 mM, CuFe₂O₄ = 0.1 g/L under pH = 6.8 at 25 °C for deionized water. Specially, the addition CO₃^2- and HCO₃^- induced the CO₃•^- appearance enhancing the selective degradation to electron-rich OTC molecule. The prepared CuFe₂O₄ catalyst exhibited desirable OTC removal rate (87.91%) even in hospital wastewater. The reactive substances were analyzed by free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the results demonstrated that ¹O₂ and •OH were the main active substances. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to analyze the intermediates produced during the degradation of OTC and thus to speculate on the possible degradation pathways. Ecotoxicological studies were conducted to unveil large-scale application prospect.

Removal of organophosphorus flame retardant by biochar-coated nZVI activating persulfate: Synergistic mechanism of adsorption and catalytic degradation

Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) is a typical aromatic-based non-chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardant, which has been widely detected in a variety of environments and poses high environmental and human health risks. In this study, biochar coated nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was fabricated to activate persulfate (PS) to degrade TPhP from water. A range of biochars (BC400, BC500, BC600, BC700, and BC800) was prepared as potential support to coat nZVI by pyrolyzing corn stalk at 400, 500, 600, 700 and 800 °C. As outperformed other biochars in adsorption rate, adsorption capacity, and less reluctant to be influenced by environmental factors (pH, humic acid (HA), coexistence of anions), BC800 was to act as support to coat nZVI (labeled as BC800@nZVI). SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS characterization showed that nZVI was successfully supported on the BC800. Removal efficiency of 10 mg L-1 TPhP by BC800@nZVI/PS could reach to 96.9% with a high catalytic degradation kinetic rate of 0.0484 min^-1 under optimal condition. The removal efficiency remained stable in a wide pH range (3-9) and moderate concentration of HA and coexistence of anions, demonstrated the promising of using BC800@nZVI/PS system to eliminate TPhP contamination. Results from the radical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments demonstrated radical pathway (i.e. SO₄·^- and HO·) and non-radical pathway via ¹O₂ both play important role in TPhP degradation. The TPhP degradation pathway was proposed based on the six degradation intermediates analyzed by LC-MS. This study illustrated the synergistic mechanism of adsorption and catalytic oxidation removal of TPhP by BC800@nZVI/PS system, and provided a cost-efficient approach for TPhP remediation.

Bisphenol A monitoring during anaerobic degradation of papers with thermochromic prints in soil

Pseudoestrogene bisphenol A (BPA) can be important ingredient of thermochromic inks, increasingly used materials in thermal printing paper, security printing, advertising, design and as temperature indicators in medicine and food industry. BPA mass fraction in thermochromic inks can be up to several percent. Hence, disposal of items with thermochromic prints pose a risk of environmental pollution. In this work BPA mass fraction was monitored during anaerobic degradation of papers with thermochromic prints in soil in both matrices: papers and soil. The degradation conditions simulated deeper layers of waste at a landfill site. Six types of papers with prints of thermochromic ink containing 2% of BPA were subjected to anaerobic degradation over up to 150 days. Initial mass fractions of BPA in papers decreased form (126-460) μg/g to (<QL - 45) μg/g after 150 days. BPA amounts were reduced 10 to 50 times depending on the paper type: least for synthetic paper and most for wood-free coated. For soil analysis new HPLC-UV method was developed and validated. The method was linear from 0.75 ng/g to 0.6 μg/g of BPA in soil with correlation coefficient of 0.9994. Method precision was 4.4%, accuracy 83% and detection limit 0.9 ng/g. Expectedly, amount of BPA in soil was increasing during the experiment. Mass fractions of BPA in soil were from not detected in earlier stage of degradation to (4.9-23.2) ng/g after 150 days. Final BPA amounts in soil were similar to those found in industrial, urban and agricultural soils worldwide. Hence, BPA from papers with thermochromic prints was notably decomposed, and contaminated soil had the capacity to absorb and decompose BPA even under anaerobic conditions. After 150 days of anaerobic degradation, only up to 1.86% of BPA contained in paper prints was found in soil, whilst, on average, 4% of initial BPA remained in paper.

Sonophotocatalysis with Photoactive Nanomaterials for Wastewater Treatment and Bacteria Disinfection

Sonophotocatalysis is described as a combination of two individual processes of photocatalysis and sonocatalysis. It has proven to be highly promising in degrading dissolved contaminants in wastewaters as well as bacteria disinfection applications. It eliminates some of the main disadvantages observed in each individual technique such as high costs, sluggish activity, and prolonged reaction times. The review has accomplished a critical analysis of sonophotocatalytic reaction mechanisms and the effect of the nanostructured catalyst and process modification techniques on the sonophotocatalytic performance. The synergistic effect between the mentioned processes, reactor design, and the electrical energy consumption has been discussed due to their importance when implementing this novel technology in practical applications, such as real industrial or municipal wastewater treatment plants. The utilization of sonophotocatalysis in disinfection and inactivation of bacteria has also been reviewed. In addition, we further suggest improvements to promote this technology from the lab-scale to large-scale applications. We hope this up-to-date review will advance future research in this field and push this technology toward widespread adoption and commercialization.

Degradation of levofloxacin in wastewater by photoelectric and ultrasonic synergy with TiO2/g-C3N4@AC combined electrode

A novel particle combined electrode named TiO₂/g-C₃N₄@AC (TGCN-AC) was prepared by loading TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ on activated carbon through gel method, which was used to degrade levofloxacin (LEF) in pharmaceutical wastewater by photoelectric process. The remarkable physicochemical features of particle electrodes were verified by using diverse characterization techniques including SEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, BET and pH_ZPC. EIS-CV and photocurrent showed excellent electrocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis performance of particle electrodes. The photocatalytic characteristics and fluorescence properties of the particle electrode were proved by UV-vis DRS and PL spectra measurements. Combined with Tauc's plot and Mott-Schottky plots curves, the E_CB and E_VB of particle electrodes were determined. The experiments on different influence factors such as pH, ultrasonic, aeration, current density and the concentration of LEF were carried out in the photoelectric reactor. Under the conditions of pH values 3.0, 200 W ultrasonic, 8 L/min aeration, the mass ratio of g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ is 8%, after 4.0 h of photoelectric process, about 94.76% of LEF (20 mg/L) in water was degraded. TGCN-AC also has excellent reusability. The degradation rate of LEF can still reach 71.17% after repeated use for 6 times. Scavenger studies showed that h⁺ and O^2- were the main active species. By observing the colony size of E. coli, it was proved that the LEF in the effluent had no antibacterial activity. The degradation pathways of LEF was analyzed and drawn by HPLC-MS spectra.

Ag2CO3-Based Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Degradation: A Review

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment have garnered a lot of attention during the past few years. Due to their toxic behavior, which interferes with endocrine functions in both humans and aquatic species, these types of compounds have been recognized as major polluting agents in wastewater effluents. Therefore, the development of efficient and sustainable removal methods for these emerging contaminants is essential. Photocatalytic removal of emerging contaminants using silver carbonate (Ag2CO3)-based photocatalyst is a promising process due to the unique characteristics of this catalyst, such as absorption of a larger fraction of the solar spectrum, wide band gap, non-toxicity, and low cost. The photocatalytic performance of Ag2CO3 has recently been improved through the doping of elements and optimization variation of operational parameters resulting in decreasing the rate of electron–hole pair recombination and an increase in the semiconductor’s excitation state efficiency, which enables the degradation of contaminants under UV or visible light exposure. This review summarized some of the relevant investigations related to Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials for EDC removal from water. The inclusion of Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials in the water recovery procedure suggests that the creation of a cutting-edge protocol is essential for successfully eliminating EDCs from the ecosystem.

Improved catalytic performance of ZnO via coupling with CoFe2O4 and carbon nanotubes: A new, photocatalysis-mediated peroxymonosulfate activation system, applied towards Cefixime degradation

In this study, a ternary ZnO@spinel cobalt ferrite@carbon nanotube magnetic photocatalyst (ZSCF@CNT) was successfully synthesized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Cefixime (CFX) antibiotic degradation under UVC irradiation. The morphology, optical, structural, and physicochemical properties of ZSCF@CNT were characterized and analyzed by XPS, XRD, FESEM-EDX, TEM, BET, VSM, UV-vis DRS and PL analysis. The results indicated that the ternary ZSCF@CNT photocatalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity on CFX elimination than that of individual components and binary composite catalysts, in which CFX with was rapidly removed under UVC irradiation and PMS. The effect of operational parameters including initial PMS, catalyst, and CFX concentrations and solution pH on the catalytic activity was investigated in detail; the optimal conditions were: pH: 7.0, catalyst: 0.3 g/L, PMS: 3.0 mM, leading to total CFX (10 mg/L) elimination in ∼20 min. Based on the radical scavenger tests, various radicals and non-radical species including sulfate, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen and electrons were involved in the ZSCF@CNT/PMS/UVC system. The high surface area, reduced agglomeration formation and excellent separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs embodied in ZSCF@CNT photocatalyst conferred its superior catalytic activity and stability. The results from the tests in real water matrices revealed that ZSCF@CNT could be a promising photocatalyst to activate PMS for actual aqueous matrices' treatment.

SnO2 and CuO anchored on zeolite as an efficient heterojunction photocatalyst for sunlight-assisted degradation of cefixime

The fabrication of heterojunction nanocomposites has been proven as a highly efficient strategy to achieve promising photocatalysts. In this study, tin oxide (SnO₂) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in situ using Rosmarinus officinalis and simultaneously anchored on zeolite for the fabrication of zeolite/SnO₂/CuO as a novel heterojunction photocatalyst. The performance of zeolite/SnO₂/CuO was assessed against photodegradation of cefixime as a model pharmaceutical contaminant. A good catalytic potential and synergistic effect was obtained for zeolite/SnO₂/CuO compared to pure SnO₂ and CuO NPs. Under optimum conditions, 89.65% of cefixime was degraded after 2.5 h under natural sunlight. Based on radical quenching experiments, the importance of involved oxidizing species in the photodegradation of cefixime using zeolite/SnO₂/CuO was in order of h⁺ > ^•OH > [Formula: see text]. Among studied anions, the highest inhibitory effect was observed for nitrate ion. Also, the main intermediates of the photodegradation process of cefixime in zeolite/SnO₂/CuO system were determined by HPLC-MS and the possible pathways were suggested. More than 83% cefixime was removed after three catalyst reuse cycles, indicating a cost-effectiveness potential in the reusability of zeolite/SnO₂/CuO. Also, the toxicity and plant growth tests revealed the feasibility of discharging the treated cefixime solutions to irrigate agricultural crops. Overall, the obtained results provide a promising technique with a synergistic feature for the efficient removal of organic pollutants.

A Comparison Study between Wood Flour and Its Derived Biochar for the Enhancement of the Peroxydisulfate Activation Capability of Fe3O4

In this study, both wood flour (WF) and wood flour-derived biochar (WFB) were used as supports for Fe3O4 to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS). The role of different carriers was investigated emphatically from the aspects of catalyst properties, the degradation kinetics of bisphenol A (BPA), the effects of important parameters, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Results showed that both WF and WFB could serve as good support for Fe3O4, which could control the release of iron into solution and increase the specific surface areas (SSAs). The WFB/Fe3O4 had stronger PDS activation capability than WF/Fe3O4 mainly due to the larger SSA of WFB/Fe3O4 and the PDS activation ability of WFB. Both radical species (•OH and SO4•−) and non-radical pathways, including 1O2 and high-valent iron-oxo species, contributed to the degradation of BPA in the WFB/Fe3O4–PDS process. Moreover, the WFB/Fe3O4 catalyst also showed stronger ability to control the iron release, better reusability, and higher BPA mineralization efficiency than WF/Fe3O4.

Catalytic activation of peroxydisulfate by secondary mineral derived self-modified iron-based composite for florfenicol degradation: Performance and mechanism

The advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) driven by iron-based materials are the highly efficient technology for refractory organic pollutants treatment. In this work, self-modified iron-based catalysts were prepared using secondary mineral as the precursor by one-step pyrolysis process without additional dopants. The prepared catalysts exhibited excellent performance in catalytic degradation of florfenicol (FF), especially C-AJ, which was derived from ammoniojarosite [(NH₄, H₃O)Fe₃(OH)₆(SO₄)₂], activated PDS to degrade 93% FF with initial concentration of 50 mg/L. Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) studies showed that SO₄^•-, ^•OH, and ^•O₂^- were the main reactive species for FF degradation and their contribution degree was SO₄^•- > ^•OH > •O₂^-. The Fe⁰ and the cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) both contributed to the PDS activation, and the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) was accelerated by S^2- on the catalyst surface. In addition, Fe₃O₄ on the C-AJ indirectly catalyzes PDS by promoting electron transfer. The effects of catalyst dosage, PDS concentration, pH, inorganic anions, and real aqueous matrices on FF degradation, TOC analysis, and cycling test were investigated. The results showed that iron-based catalysts have superior environmental durability due to their excellent catalytic properties in the real aqueous matrices with common inorganic anions and pH 3-9 and its steady catalytic capacity with multiple cycles. Overall, this study sheds new light on the rational design of self-modified iron-based composite and develops low-cost technology toward remediation of FF-contaminated wastewater.

Anchoring ZnO on spinel cobalt ferrite for highly synergic sono-photo-catalytic, surfactant-assisted PAH degradation from soil washing solutions

In this study, the photocatalytic activity of ZnO was effectively improved via its combination with spinel cobalt ferrite (SCF) nanoparticles. The catalytic performance of ZnO@SCF (ZSCF) was investigated in coupling with UV irradiation and ultrasound (US), as a heterogeneous sono-photocatalytic process, for the decontamination of phenanthrene (PHE) from contaminated soil. Soil washing tests were conducted in a batch environment, after extraction assisted by using Tween 80. Several characterization techniques such as XRD, FESEM-EDS, BET, TEM, UV-vis DRS, PL and VSM were utilized to determine the features of the as-prepared catalysts. ZSCF showed an excellent catalytic activity toward degradation of PHE in the presence of US and UV with a significant synergic effect. It was found that more than 93% of PHE (35 mg/L) and 87.5% of TOC could be eliminated by the integrated ZSCF/US/UV system under optimum operational conditions (pH: 8.0, ZSCF: 1.5 g/L, UV power: 6.0 W and US power: 70 W) within 90 min of reaction. After five times of use, ZSCF illustrated good reusability in the decontamination of PHE (87%) and TOC (79%). Quenching tests revealed the contribution of h⁺, HO^• and e^- species during PHE degradation over ZSCF/UV/US and an S-scheme photocatalytic mechanisms was proposed for the possible charge transfer routes under the ZSCF system. This study provides the important role of SCF in enhancing the ZnO photocatalytic activity due to its high performance, easy recovery and excellent durability, which it make an efficient and promising catalyst in environmental clean-up applications.

Magnetic Co/CoOx@NCNT catalysts for activation of potassium peroxymonosulfate to deteriorate phenol from wastewater

Phenols are of much toxicological and they must be effectively removed from the wastewater from industries as well as sewage treatment. Such removal demands a special and strong composite. So, this piece of research aims to activate Potassium peroxymonosulfate (PPMS) with the large surface area of magnetite nitrogen-fixed porous carbon nanotube composites (Co/CoOx@NCNT). Increases in the graphitization degree and structural control brought about by the incorporation of reduced Graphite oxide (rGO) significantly increased the catalyst activity of Co/CoOx@NCNT. It was found that PPMS activation for phenol removal by Co/CoOx@NCNT was nearly as effective as by homogeneous Co²⁺, with nearly 100% removal efficiency in 10 min. Both high reusability and high recycling of Co/CoOx@NCNT were accomplished simultaneously by proving the technology of viability in practical applications. The PPMS activation mechanism in the Co/CoOx@NCNT/PPMS system was driven by the electron transmission from contaminants to PPMS through the sp^2- hybrid carbon nanotubes and nitrogen system. The selectivity of the Co/CoOx@NCNT/PPMS system to remove diverse organic compounds was determined by batch experiments. Due to the insignificant impact of radicals reactive on pollutant breakdown, the ability to inhibit species (such as Cl^- and natural organic materials) from a minor role was significantly decreased. These results not only shed light on the process of PPMS heterogeneous activation but also provided a framework for the balanced project of highly effective nanocarbon-based catalysts for PPMS activation.

Dual function Mg-doped binary metal ferrite: Photocatalytic degradation of trichlorophenol, bactericidal activity and molecular docking analysis

A new Mg-doped Zn_0.5Ni_0.5Fe₂O₄ (Mg-FZN) photocatalyst was synthesised using a simple co-precipitation-doping technique to develop a dual-function material with the ability to degrade hazardous and refractory pollutants and inactivate bacterial strains. The characterization results revealed that Mg-FZN is an n-type semiconductor with a conduction band of -0.413 eV, an average pore width of 2.32 nm, and a crystal size of 31.45 nm. The photocatalytic activity of Mg-FZN was assessed based on the degradation of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and achieved 83.8% degradation efficiency under optimised conditions. The radical quenching results revealed that h⁺ significantly contributed to the photodegradation process while ^•OH, and ^•O₂^- played key roles. Additionally, within 60 min, 25 mg of Mg-FZN had bactericidal effects on the bacteria E. coli and S. aureus in both the presence and absence of UV light. Mg-FZN showed H-bonding, electrostatic, and metal-contact interactions with the amino acid residues of the bacterial protein with high binding scores (-4.711 kcal/mol and -5.872 kcal/mol), according to molecular docking.

Enhancement of peroxymonosulfate activation for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid removal by MoSe2 induced Fe redox cycles

The limited regeneration of Fe2+ in the Fe-catalyzed advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) constrained its application for the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, MoSe2 was introduced to promote the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in the Fe2+/PMS system. Compared with Fe2+/PMS processes, the 2,4-D degradation efficiency and PMS decomposition rate respectively increased by 73.8% and 84.2% in the MoSe2/Fe2+/PMS system. DFT simulation results suggested that Se atoms acted smoothly as the bridge supporting the charge transfer from Mo to adjacent Fe atoms, which led to the reduction of Fe3+. The rapid regeneration of Fe2+ boosted the activation of PMS and the degradation of pollutants. Additionally, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments results indicated that SO4∙-, ∙OH, and 1O2 accounted for 2,4-D degradation, and SO4∙- and 1O2 predominated the reaction. The Mo based co-catalysts showed better co-catalytic effect than the W counterparts, and the moderate adsorption for PMS and lower electron transfer electron transfer resistance accounted for the more excellent co-catalytic performance of MoSe2 than that of WSe2. In addition, the degradation efficiency of 2,4-D was up to 95.5% after five cycles of MoSe2 in the co-catalytic system. The coexistent humic acid (HA) and Cl- showed ignorant negative effect on the degradation, while HCO3- would depress the oxidation reaction. The acidic etching wastewater can be applied as the Fe ions source in this co-catalytic process to remove 2,4-D effectively.

pH-dependent generation of radical and nonradical species for sulfamethoxazole degradation in different carbon/persulfate systems

The impacts of pH on purification efficiency can be phenomenal in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), because solution pH affects persulfate (PS) activation processes. However, consensus has not been reached on the regimes of pH-regulated oxidation in persulfate-based AOPs (PS-AOPs). Particularly, the impacts of pH on carbon-catalyzed generation of radical and nonradical species remain unclear. In this work, we evaluated three typical carbonaceous materials including pyrolytic carbon (PC), activated carbon (AC), and carbon nanotube (CNT) to activate PS for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation within a pH range from 4 to 9. The experiment revealed pH-dependent SMX removal in PC/PS, AC/PS, and CNT/PS, and the kinetics followed an order of pH 4 > pH 7 > pH 9. Solution pH simultaneously affected SMX adsorption and degradation, but the latter was more profound. Chemical quenching experiment, electrochemical measurement, kinetics calculation, and ATR-FTIR tests collectively revealed that high pH was not favorable for both radical and nonradical oxidation. In the PC/PS system, increased pH decreased the amount of phenolic -OH on PC surface, thereby restraining the generation of SO₄^•- and ^•OH due to the lack of electron donors. For AC/PS system, elevated pH hindered the interactions between AC and PS, thus suppressing the formation of surface-bound radicals. CNT/PS initiated an electron-transfer pathway, and increased pH reduced the oxidation potential of surface CNT-PS* complex, which was not favorable for nonradical oxidation of adsorbed pollutants. Therefore, outcomes of this work will advance the current knowledge on the intrinsic impacts of pH in PS-AOPs catalyzed by carbonaceous materials for wastewater purification.
