Abstract
Purpose Persistent inflammation resulting from injury, infection, or arthritis contributes to both peripheral and central sensitization. Various combinations of natural extracts have been explored to minimize the side effects associated with conventional medications. Shinbaro, which has traditionally been used in Eastern medicine to treat inflammatory conditions, was chosen due to its known anti-inflammatory properties. However, previous studies have not yet investigated the combined administration of celecoxib and Shinbaro for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. In this study, we examined the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of combining celecoxib with Shinbaro in a complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain model. Methods We randomly assigned 66 mice to 6 groups (n = 11 per group) and administered intraplantar injections of 100 μL CFA or saline into their right hind paw, followed by oral administration of Shinbaro (100 mg/kg), celecoxib (15 or 30 mg/kg), or both 30 minutes later. Behavioral assessments were conducted blindly at baseline and on days 1, 3, and 7 post-injection. The right hind paw and spinal cord were harvested 3 days post-injection to examine the molecular mechanisms, including macrophage infiltration in the right hind paw, as well as glial cell activation and inflammatory cytokine levels in the spinal cord. Statistical analysis was performed using Tukey's post-hoc test. Results The combination of Shinbaro (100 mg/kg) and celecoxib (15 mg/kg) synergistically reduced mechanical hyperalgesia and paw edema by preventing the conversion of monocytes to macrophages and inhibiting macrophage infiltration. Moreover, it decreased the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators in the spinal cord by inhibiting spinal microglial activation. Conclusion The combination of Shinbaro and celecoxib demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, suggesting its potential for managing inflammatory pain with fewer side effects than conventional therapies.

Abstract
Chronic painful autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) induce significant discomfort. They are defined by persistent inflammation and immune-mediated tissue injury. The activation and sensitisation of nociceptors, mutated in various disorders, are fundamental components contributing to the pain experienced in these conditions. Recent discoveries indicate that immunological mediators and nociceptive receptors interact functionally within peripheral and central sensitisation pathways, amplifying chronic pain. This research examines the involvement of nociceptors in rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. It explores how immune cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines induce, sensitise and regulate various nociceptive receptors (P2X, TRPA1 and TRPV1). Finally, we address possible future directions with respect to the treatment of long-lasting effects on immunity, and what new drug targets could be pursued as well, in order to counteract such either neuro-immune interactions in conditions involving the immunological system. By studying nociceptive mechanisms across autoimmune illnesses, we want to identify shared pathways and activation of nociceptors specific to individual diseases. This will shed insight on potential therapies for managing pain associated with autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Vaccination represents a promising approach to combat resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP). However, there is currently no licensed vaccine in the veterinary field. Outer membrane proteins have been proven to possess good immunogenicity, but Freund's adjuvant, which is commonly used to administer protein vaccines, has limitations such as a complicated formulation process as well as a tendency to cause pain and inflammation in animals. Here, we prepared a nano-vaccine based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-encapsulated outer membrane protein PhoE and evaluated its efficiency in enhancing humoral and cellular immune responses in BALB/c mice. ZIF-8 nanoparticles rapidly delivered the protein antigen into dendritic cells and successfully activated them. In addition, significantly higher IgG antibody titers, cytokine levels, and splenocyte proliferation indices were founded in mice subcutaneously immunized with PhoE@ZIF-8 than in those receiving free PhoE alone. In a BALB/c mouse model, PhoE@ZIF-8 elicited a strong immune response with improved prophylactic efficacy against KP that was similar to the Freund's adjuvant-formulated vaccine. Based on the superiority of this nano-vaccine with good biocompatibility, inexpensive preparation and higher efficiency of delivering antigen into cells, ZIF-8 can serve as a promising replacement for Freund's adjuvant in research, with a prospective usage for vaccines against bacterial pathogens in the veterinary field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Notwithstanding progress in conventional medicine (CM), the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) continues to be problematic due to factors such as limited patient response to treatment and restricted medication access. This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which East Asian herbal medicine with CM combination therapy (EACM) provides additional benefits in effectiveness and safety. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search across 11 databases in English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese for randomized controlled trials. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, using the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 20/50/70 Response Criteria and the incidence of adverse events (AEI) as primary outcomes. This meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model. The quality of each study was assessed according to the RoB 2. Of the 1036 full-text articles screened, 415 were included in the review. RESULTS This review included data from 37,839 participants. EACM was associated with higher ACR responses: ACR 20 (RR: 1.2332; 95 % CI: 1.1852-1.2831, p < 0.0001), ACR 50 (RR: 1.3782; 95 % CI: 1.2936-1.4684, p < 0.0001), and ACR 70 (RR: 1.7084; 95 % CI: 1.5555-1.8762, p < 0.0001), as well as a favorable AEI (OR: 0.3977; 95 % CI: 0.3476-0.4551, p < 0.0001), indicating both better efficacy and safety compared to CM alone. These patterns were consistent across eight secondary outcomes measuring pain, inflammation, and disease activity in RA. Subgroup analyses showed that EACM's effects were independent of the control CM type. Through a comprehensive analysis of a polyherbal prescription dataset, we identified 18 key herbs and 16 significant combination rules, further supported by relevant preclinical evidence. These herbs and synergistic herbal combinations were anticipated to be the most pharmacologically influential in contributing to the meta-analysis outcomes, as substantiated by analytical metrics including network topology and intricate association pattern evaluations. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that EACM may serve as a valuable complementary strategy for RA patients insufficiently managed by CM alone. In particular, given that the ACR index integrates multiple aspects of RA patients, the results are expected to provide valuable complementary decision support for the management of RA patients who do not respond well to CM therapy, both for medical and economic reasons. Additionally, the key herbs derived through the multifaceted analysis, which actively reflect clinicians' implicit preferences for prescribing EACMs, may serve as important hypotheses for further research and clinical application. However, additional qualitative and quantitative improvements in research are needed for more definitive conclusions. Further analysis of the herbal prescriptions presented in this study will provide valuable direction for future research.

Abstract
Brucine (BRU), an active constituent of Strychnos nux-vomica L., is one of the potential agents to control subside swelling in arthritis. However, its hydrophobic nature, poor permeation, shorter half-life, narrow therapeutic window, and higher toxicity impede its clinical applications. Hence, this investigation was aimed to develop and evaluate novel BRU loaded β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) nanosponges (BRUNs) hydrogel consisting rosemary essential oil (RO), which have been tailored for delayed release, enhanced skin permeation, and reduced irritation, while retaining anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of this bioactive. Firstly, BRUNs were fabricated by melt technique and characterized appropriately. BRUNs6 demonstrated two fold enhancement in BRU solubility (441.692 ± 38.674) with minimum particle size (322.966 ± 54.456) having good PDI (0.571 ± 0.091) and zeta potential (-14.633 ± 6.357). In vitro release results demonstrated delayed release of BRU from BRUNs6 (67 ± 4.25%) over 24 h through molecular diffusion mechanism. Further, preserved anti-inflammatory (53.343 ± 0.191%) and antioxidant potential (60.269 ± 0.073%) of bioactive was observed in BRUNs6. Hence, this Ns batch was engrossed with Carbopol®934 hydrogel with RO and characterized. In vitro (release and anti-inflammatory activity), ex-vivo (skin permeability) and in vivo (carrageenan-induced inflammation) assays along with irritation study were conducted for fabricated hydrogels. Results revealed that in vitro release of BRU was further delayed from Ns hydrogel with RO (56.45 ± 3.01%) following Fickian mechanism. Considerable enhancement in skin permeability (60.221 ± 0.322 µg/cm2/h) and preservation of anti-inflammatory activity (94.736 ± 2.002%) was also observed in BRUNs6 hydrogel containing RO. The irritation of BRU was found reduced (half) after its entrapped in Ns. Further, as a proof of concept, BRUNs6 hydrogel with RO effectively reduced (75.757 ± 0.944%) carrageenan-induced inflammation in rat model in comparison to pure BRU (54.914 ± 1.081%). Hence, BRUNs hydrogel with RO can be considered as a promising alternative for dermal delivery of BRU in arthritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Bombax buonopozense (Bombacaceae) leaves have been used traditionally for arthritis in south-western Nigeria. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the antioxidant and anti-arthritic activity of B. buonopozense in Complete Freund adjuvant-induce arthritic wistar rats. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The plant leaves methanol extract and fractions were screened for preliminary phytochemicals and brine shrimp lethality was determined. Total phenolic content (TPC), Total flavonoid content (TFC) as well as anti-oxidant activity of the extract and fractions were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Cyclophosphamide, gallic acid, and ascorbic acid were used as standards respectively. Anti-arthritic activity of crude methanol extract (BBME) at 100, 200 and 400mg/kg was evaluated in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis model in rats. Data were analysed using Graph pad prism version 5, two-way and one-way ANOVA, and Bonferroni post hoc test. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolics. The brine shrimp lethality assay of the crude extract and fractions gave LC50 value≥1000μg/mL, compared to Cyclophosphamide (LC50=224.7±0.35μg/mL). The BBME had TPC value of 19.8±0.56mg GAE/g, while the TFC of ethyl acetate fraction was the highest (173.5±0.05mg QE/g). The ethyl acetate fraction has the highest antioxidant activity (IC50=20.96±0.23μg/mL) as compared to ascorbic acid (2.8±0.01) and rutin (20.6±9.26μg/mL). BBME significantly reduced the paw circumference. BBME (400mg/kg) prevented biochemical changes to a greater extent than Celecoxib (20mg/kg). Bombax buonopozense leaves could be an effective antiarthritic and holds prospect in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Fungal pathogens can cause deadly invasive infections and have become a major global public health challenge. There is an urgent need to find new treatment options beyond established antifungal agents, as well as new drug targets that can be used to develop novel antifungal agents. Cinnamomum cassia is a tropical aromatic plant that has a wide range of applications in traditional Chinese medicine, especially in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study aimed to explore the mechanism of action and functional components of Cinnamomum cassia essential oil (CEO) against Candida albicans using an integrated strategy combining network-based metabolomics and pharmacology, the greedy algorithm and molecular docking. MATERIALS AND METHODS CEO was extracted using hydrodistillation and its chemical composition was identified by GC-MS. Cluster analysis was performed on the compositions of 19 other CEOs from the published literature, as well as the sample obtained in this study. The damages of C. albicans cells upon treatment with CEO was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The mechanisms of its antifungal effect at a subinhibitory concentration of 0.1 × MIC were determined using microbial metabolomics and network analysis. The functional components were studied using the greedy algorithm and molecular docking. RESULTS A total of 69 compounds were identified in the chemical analysis of CEO, which accounted for 90% of the sample. The major compounds were terpenoids (34.04%), aromatic compounds (4.52%), aliphatic compounds (0.9%), and others. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the compositions of 20 essential oils extracted from Cinnamomum cassia grown in different geographical locations showed a wide diversity of chemical composition with four major chemotypes. CEO showed strong antifungal activity and caused destruction of cell membranes in a concentration-dependent way. Metabolic fingerprint analysis identified 29 metabolites associated with lipid metabolism, which were mapped to 23 core targets mainly involved in fatty acid biosynthesis and metabolism. Six antifungal functional components of CEO were identified through network construction, greedy algorithm and molecular docking, including trans-cinnamaldehyde, δ-cadinol, ethylcinnamate, safrole, trans-anethole, and trans-cinnamyl acetate, which showed excellent binding with specific targets of AKR1B1, PPARG, BCHE, CYP19A1, CYP2C19, QPCT, and CYP51A1. CONCLUSIONS This study provides a systematic understanding of the antifungal activity of CEO and offers an integrated strategy for deciphering the potential metabolism and material foundation of complex component drugs.

Abstract
C. officinalis Kuan is the dry root of Cyathula officinalis Kuan. Clinically, it is used for fall and flutter injury, rheumatism and arthralgia. Phytoecdysteroids have significant anti-inflammatory effects, and the phytoecdysteroids present in C. officinalis Kuan exhibit potential for treating rheumatoid arthritis.This study first developed a selective, accurate and efficient LC-MS/MS method for 12-day pharmacokinetic studies regarding the simultaneous determination of cyasterone, 25-epi-28-epi-cyasterone, precyasterone and capitasterone from C. officinalis Kuan phytoecdysteroids extract in normal and adjuvant arthritis rats.An Agilent Eclipse Plus C18 RRHD column (1.8 µm, 50mm × 2.1 mm) with a gradient mobile phase consisting of water (A) and acetonitrile (B) was used for analysis. The mass analysis was performed in an Agilent 6430 QQQ-MS mass spectrometer with positive mode multiple reaction monitoring (MRM).The results indicated that the AUC0-t and AUC0-∞ values of the four phytoecdysteroids in adjuvant arthritis rats were different from those in normal rats on the first day, which could provide a helpful reference for pharmacological and toxicological studies, as well as clinical applications of C. officinalis Kuan in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to develop liquid crystal (LC) precursors to obtain novel long-acting analgesics for injection based on depot systems and compare the difference between the cubic and hexagonal precursors in delivering Diclofenac sodium (DS). METHODS Diclofenac sodium liquid crystal precursor injections were prepared and characterized, followed by in vitro release, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacokinetic studies. RESULTS The optimal formulations were prepared with a ratio of Phytantriol/ethanol/water as 76:19:5 for cubic LC precursors, and a ratio of Phytantriol/ethanol/water/Vitamine-E acetate as 72:18:5:5 for hexagonal, both loading various drug dosages (2.5%, 3.75% and 5%), respectively. Polarized light microscopy and small angle diffraction confirmed that the precursors were isotropic fluids and transformed into gels with Pn3m or HII framework in water. Rheological studies have shown that precursors belong to Newtonian fluids and gels to pseudoplastic fluids. The release showed that the DS in the commercial injection (DS-inj) was completely liberated within 6 h, whereas only 46.55% and 49.73% of the DS in 2.5% cubic precursors and 2.5% hexagonal precursors were freed, respectively. Pharmacodynamic studies have shown that cubic, hexagonal and DS-inj raised the pain threshold in mice by 169.4%, 157.3% and 113.79%, respectively. The mean retention times of DS in cubic and hexagonal were 3.16 and 2.67 times longer than DS-inj, respectively, according to pharmacokinetic results. CONCLUSION In conclusion, cubic and hexagonal are both promising analgesic sustained release formulations. In addition, based only on the current comparison, cubic seems to have a better long-acting effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To thoroughly explore the values of Cinnamomum cassia leaf residues (CcLR), their antioxidant activity in vivo and the relationship with gut microbiota were investigated using d-galactose-induced aging mice. RESULTS Results showed that CcLR extract treatment exerted antioxidant activity by increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase (P < 0.01) and glutathione peroxidase (P < 0.05), as well as inhibiting the formation of malondialdehyde (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the inflammatory response was also alleviated as the ratio of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor-α (P < 0.01) and interleukin-1β (P < 0.01))/anti-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-10; P < 0.05) in serum was decreased and the contents of inflammatory markers (induced nitrogen monoxide synthase and nitric oxide) in brain and liver tissues (P < 0.01) were reduced. Moreover, through inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity and improving choline acetyltransferase activity, the cholinergic system in aging mice recovered to levels comparable to the normal control group. In addition, 16S rRNA sequencing results demonstrated that CcLR extract promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria. In particular, Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the abundance of Colidextribacter was negatively correlated with serum superoxide dismutase (P < 0.05, R = -0.943), and Helicobacter displayed a positive correlation with the content of brain nitric oxide (P < 0.05, R = 0.899), suggesting that regulating gut microbiota might be one of the mechanisms for reducing oxidative stress, thus postponing the aging process. CONCLUSION It is suggested that CcLR extract could be used as a novel antioxidant and anti-aging resource in the pharmaceutical and food industries. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Toxicology studies provide a reliable dose range for the use of compounds. Zebrafish show unique advantages in toxicology research. Cinnamaldehyde (Cin) is one of the main active compounds isolated from Cinnamon trees and other species of the genus Cinnamomum. In this study, we investigated the developmental neurotoxicity of cinnamaldehyde in zebrafish and preliminarily explored its underlying mechanism. Cinnamaldehyde causes developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish, as evidenced by the damage to ventricular structures, eye malformations, shortened body length, trunk curvature, decreased neuronal fluorescence, and pericardial oedema. Moreover, it can induce abnormal behaviour and gene expression in zebrafish. After treatment with the oxidative stress inhibitor astaxanthin, the behaviour and abnormal gene expression were reversed. All of these data demonstrated that the developmental neurotoxicity of cinnamaldehyde might be attributed to oxidative stress. In addition, this study also confirmed that zebrafish is a reliable model for toxicity studies.

Abstract
Lauraceae is a large family with significant economic and medicinal value. Bioactive ingredients from Lauraceae plants have contributed greatly to medicines, food nutrients and fine chemical products. In recent years, quite a few sesquiterpenes and diterpenes with unique structures have been achieved from Lauraceae and their potential benefits are embodied in a wide range of health areas. To our knowledge, there is no review to summarizes these constituents and their biological effects systematically. This current work aims to classify and ascribe the structural types and bioactivities of the identified sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. Herein, a total of 362 sesquiterpenes and 69 diterpenes were comprehensively complied. The various bioactivities could be recognized as cytotoxicity, anti-proliferation and/or anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-bacterium, etc. This updated data could serve as a catalysis of these sesquiterpenes and diterpenes for the future medical and industrial applications.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is pathologically characterized by an immune response accommodative insufficiency and dysbiosis accompanied by persistent epithelial barrier dysfunction, and is divided into ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Its progression increases the susceptibility to colitis-associated cancer (CAC), as well as other complications. The Xiao-Jian-Zhong (XJZ) formula has a historical application in the clinic to combat gastrointestinal disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY The investigation aimed to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms of XJZ. MATERIALS AND METHODS Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was diluted in drinking water and given to mice for a week to establish murine models of experimental colitis, and the XJZ solution was administered for two weeks. Network pharmacology analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were utilized to predict the therapeutic role of XJZ against UC and CAC. 16S rRNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were conducted utilizing murine feces to examine the changes in the microbiome profile. Biochemical experiments were conducted to confirm the predicted functions. RESULTS XJZ treatment markedly attenuated DSS-induced experimental colitis progression, and the targets were enriched in inflammation, infection, and tumorigenesis, predicted by network pharmacology analysis. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, the XJZ-targets were related to the survival probability in patients with colorectal cancer, underlying a potential therapeutic value in cancer intervention. Moreover, the XJZ therapy successfully rescued the decreased richness and diversity of microbiota, suppressed the potentially pathogenic phenotype of the gut microorganisms, and reversed the declined linoleic acid metabolism and increased cytochrome P450 activity in murine colitis models. Our in-vitro experiments confirmed that the XJZ treatment suppressed Caspase1-dependent pyroptosis and increased peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-γ(PPAR-γ) expression in the colon, facilitated the alternative activation of macrophages (Mφs), inhibited tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα)-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in intestinal organoids (IOs), thereby favoring the mucosal healing. CONCLUSION The XJZ formula is efficacious for colitis by a prompt resolution of inflammation and dysbiosis, and by re-establishing a microbiome profile that favors re-epithelization, and prevents carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to a significant social burden. East Asian herbal medicine (EAHM) has long been used to treat RA. Therefore, a systematic study of how EAHM treatments can be developed into new drugs using specific materials is needed. METHODS Eleven databases containing literature in English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese were searched for randomized controlled trials comparing EAHM with conventional medicine (CM). A meta-analysis was performed on the variable data to assess their effects on inflammatory pain. Subsequently, we searched for core materials and combinations of core material-based data mining methods. RESULTS A total of 186 trials involving 19,716 patients with RA met the inclusion criteria. According to the meta-analysis, EAHM had a significantly superior effect on continuous pain intensity, tender joint count, and response rate. Patients treated with EAHM had a significantly reduced incidence of adverse events compared with those treated with CM. Based on additional analysis of the EAHM formula data included in this meta-analysis, 21 core materials and five core herbal combinations were identified. CONCLUSION EAHM remedies for RA have the adequate potential for use as candidate materials for treating inflammatory pain in RA. The candidate core herbs evaluated in this study act on multiple pathways and are expected to provide pain relief, sustained inflammation suppression, immune regulation, and prevention of joint destruction. It seems worthwhile to conduct follow-up research on drug development using the core materials derived from this review.

Abstract
Cinnamomi Ramulus (CR) has been extensively used as a remedy for inflammatory diseases in China. This study adopted an integrative approach of experimental research, phytochemistry, and network pharmacology to investigate its alleviative effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the underlying potential mechanisms. CR extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) and methotrexate (MTX) significantly ameliorated RA symptoms in the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. They also reduced paw volume, arthritis index, proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-17A, IL-6, and IL-1β), and oxidative damage. Sixty-three compounds were systematically identified as the basic components of CR. Fifty-five common genes obtained from compounds and GEO databases were employed to construct the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Among them, 20 hub genes were identified via the cytoHubba. Enrichment analysis of the common genes indicated that the TNF signaling pathway and IL-17 signaling pathway might be the potential key pathways. Moreover, molecular docking methods confirmed the high affinity between the top 10 bioactive components of CR and the top 10 targets. In addition, in vitro results showed that CR extract (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/mL) inhibited inflammation and oxidative damage in MH7A cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In summary, this study adopted multiple approaches to elucidate the protective effect and potential mechanisms of CR on RA, indicating that CR might be a promising herbal candidate for further investigation of RA treatment.

Abstract
The prevalence of asthma is gradually increasing, and endangers human health. Many therapeutic agents have been developed to address this concern. Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J.Presl is a traditional herbal remedy in China, Japan, and Korea and used mainly to control common cold, cough, pneumonitis and fever in Donguibogam, a medical encyclopedia of Korea. Therefore, we investigated whether C. cassia (L.) J.Presl extract (CCE) confers protective effects on asthma model induced by ovalbumin (OVA). The animals were received intraperitoneal administration of OVA on day 1 and 14, and then subjected to OVA inhalation from day 21–23. They were orally treated CCE (30 and 100 mg/kg) from day 18–23. CCE administration decreased allergic responses, including airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilia, inflammatory cytokine production, and immunoglobulin E in OVA-exposed mice, along with the decline in inflammatory cell count and mucus secretion in respiratory tract. Additionally, CCE suppressed MAPK phosphorylation and MMP-9 expression in OVA-exposed mice. Overall, CCE treatment attenuated allergic responses induced by OVA exposure, which may be connected to the suppression of MAPK phosphorylation.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study was to test the anti-rheumatic effects of A. jaluense tubers in acute and chronic arthritis rats, and to assign its ingredients through UHPLC-TOF/MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS Subcutaneous injection of carrageenan for acute arthritis and complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) for chronic arthritis was carried out in the hind paw of SD rats. The paw volume was measured by a plethysmometer thermal hyperalgesia was tested using a thermal plantar tester, and mechanical hyperalgesia was evaluated by ankle flexion evoked vocalizations. The expression of c-Fos in the brain hippocampus was measured with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique. The ingredients were assigned by UHPLC-TOF/MS, chromatography was performed by UHPLC system with DAD detector and BEH C18 column, and spectroscopy was conducted by ESI-MS system. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The 80% ethanoic extract of A. jaluense tubers showed an acute anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing the edema volume in the hind paw of carrageenan-stimulated rats. In addition, A. jaluense tubers exerted an anti-rheumatic activity by reducing the secondary swelling volume from an immunological reaction in the left hind paw of CFA-induced chronic arthritis rats. Additionally, oral treatment with the 80% ethanoic extract -showed potent analgesic effects in the arthritis rats by recovering the paw withdrawal latency stimulated by the thermal hyperalgesia and by reducing the vocalization scores evoked by ankle flexion on both hind paws. Moreover, its treatment also indicated an anti-psychiatric effect by controlling the c-Fos protein expression of the brain hippocampus in CFA-stimulated arthritis rats. These results suggested that these therapeutic effects were exhibited by less toxic mono-esterified diterpenoid alkaloids (MDAs), and nontoxic non-esterified diterpenoid alkaloids (NDAs). CONCLUSION A. jaluense tubers may act as viable therapeutic or preventive candidates for acute and chronic arthritis, particularly, for immune-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis to suppress the pain and psychiatric condition.

Abstract
Chinese herbal medicines have long been used for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. The treatment experiences of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pharmacies passed down through generations have contributed to a wealth of prescriptions for dysmenorrhea that have achieved significant therapeutic effects in countless Taiwanese women. Therefore, surveying and analyzing these prescriptions may enable us to elucidate the core medication combinations used in TCM prescriptions for dysmenorrhea. In the present study, a field investigation was conducted on various TCM pharmacies in Taiwan. A total of 96 TCM pharmacies were sampled, and 99 prescriptions for dysmenorrhea containing 77 different medicinal materials were collected. Compositae (8%) was the most common botanical source of the medicinal materials, and the predominant TCM property and flavor of the materials were warm (45%) and sweet (73%), respectively. The blood-activating and stasis-dispelling effect (23%) and the qi-tonifying effect (23%) were the most prevalent traditional effects, and the modern pharmacological effects most commonly found in the materials were anti-inflammatory (73%), antitumor (59%), and analgesic (12%) effects. Network analysis of the 77 medicinal materials used in the prescriptions, which was performed using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System, yielded seven core medicinal materials and the corresponding network diagram. The seven core medicinal materials ranked in order of relative frequency of citation (RFC) were Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Dang Gui), Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort (Chuan Qiong), Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch (Di Huang), Paeonia lactiflora Pall (Bai Shao), Hedysarum polybotrys Hand.-Mazz (Hong Qi), Lycium chinense Mill (Gou Qi Zi), and Cinnamomum cassia (L.). J. Presl (Gui Zhi). A total of 58 combinations, each consisting of two to five of the seven medicinal materials and 107 association rules among the materials, were identified. This study provides a record of valuable knowledge on TCM pharmacy prescriptions for dysmenorrhea. The rich medicinal knowledge of TCM pharmacies in Taiwan is worthy of further exploration, and the results of this study can serve as a basis for future pharmacological research and the development of naturally derived medications for dysmenorrhea.

Abstract
Objective Edible bird’s nest (EBN) is a popular traditional tonic food in Chinese population for centuries. Malaysia is one of the main EBN suppliers in the world. This study aims to explore the best strategy to boost the antioxidant potential of EBN solution. Methods In this study, the raw EBN (4%, mass to volume ratio) was initially enzymatic hydrolyzed using papain enzyme to produce EBN hydrolysate (EBNH), then spray-dried into powdered form. Next, 4% (mass to volume ratio) of EBNH powder was dissolved in ginger extract (GE), mulberry leaf extract (MLE) and cinnamon twig extract (CTE) to detect the changes of antioxidant activities, respectively. Results Results obtained suggest that enzymatic hydrolysis significantly reduced the viscosity of 4% EBN solution from (68.12 ± 0.69) mPa·s to (7.84 ± 0.31) mPa·s. Besides, the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total soluble protein, DPPH scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were substantially increased following EBN hydrolysis using papain enzyme. In addition, fortification with GE, MLE and CTE had further improved the TPC, TFC, DPPH scavenging activity and FRAP of the EBNH solution. Among the samples, MLE-EBNH solution showed the most superior antioxidant potential at (86.39 ± 1.66)% of DPPH scavenging activity and (19.79 ± 2.96) mmol/L FeSO4 of FRAP. Conclusion This study proved that combined enzymatic hydrolysis and MLE fortification is the best strategy to produce EBN product with prominent in vitro antioxidant potential. This preliminary study provides new insight into the compatibility of EBN with different herbal extracts for future health food production.
