Insight into the potentiality of nano zero-valent iron on enhancing the nitrite accumulation and phosphorus removal performance of endogenous partial denitrification systems. CHEMOSPHERE 2024; 352:141304. [PMID: 38309602 DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141304] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/07/2023] [Revised: 01/19/2024] [Accepted: 01/24/2024] [Indexed: 02/05/2024]
Abstract
Endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) has drawn a lot of interest due to its abundant nitrite (NO2--N) accumulation capacity. However, the poor phosphate (PO43--P) removal rate of EPD restricts its promotion and application. In this study, the potentiality of various nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) concentrations (0, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L) on NO2--N accumulation and PO43--P removal in EPD systems had been investigated. Results showed that nZVI improved NO2--N accumulation and PO43--P removal, with the greatest nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) and PO43--P removal rate of 97.74 % and 64.76 % respectively at the optimum nZVI level (80 mg/L). Microbial community analysis also proved that nZVI had a remarkable influence on the microbial community of EPD. Candidatus_Competibacter was contribute to NO2--N accumulation which was enriched from 24.74 % to 40.02 %. The enrichment of Thauera, Rhodobacteraceae, Pseudomonas were contributed to PO43--P removal. The chemistry of nZVI not only compensated for the deficiency of biological PO43--P removal, but also enhanced NO2--N enrichment. Therefore, nZVI had the huge potentiality to improve the operational performance of the EPD system.

Insights into the long-term immobilization performances and mechanisms of CMC-Fe 0/FeS with different sulfur sources for uranium under anoxic and oxic aging. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2024; 353:120157. Abstract
Nanoscale zerovalent iron (Fe0)-based materials have been demonstrated to be a effective method for the U(VI) removal. However, limited research has been conducted on the long-term immobilization efficiency and mechanism of Fe0-based materials for U(VI), which are essential for achieving safe handling and disposal of U(VI) on a large scale. In this study, the prepared carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sulfurization dual stabilized Fe0 (CMC-Fe0/FeS) exhibited excellent long-term immobilization performances for U(VI) under both anoxic and oxic conditions, with the immobilization efficiencies were respectively reached over 98.0 % and 94.8 % after 180 days of aging. Most importantly, different from the immobilization mechanisms of the fresh CMC-Fe0/FeS for U(VI) (the adsorption effect of -COOH and -OH groups, coordination effect with sulfur species, as well as reduction effect of Fe0), the re-mobilized U(VI) were finally re-immobilized by the formed FeOOH and Fe3O4 on the aged CMC-Fe0/FeS. Under anoxic conditions, more Fe3O4 was produced, which may be the main reason for the long-term immobilization U(VI). Under oxic conditions, the production of Fe3O4 and FeOOH were relatively high, which both played significant roles in re-immobilizing U(VI) through surface complexation, reduction and incorporation effects.

Iron-based multi-carbon composite and Pseudomonas furukawaii ZS1 co-affect nitrogen removal, microbial community dynamics and metabolism pathways in low-temperature aquaculture wastewater. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2024; 349:119471. Abstract
Aerobic denitrification is the key process in the elimination of nitrogen from aquaculture wastewater, especially for wastewater with high dissolved oxygen and low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. However, a low C/N ratio, especially in low-temperature environments, restricts the activity of aerobic denitrifiers and decreases the nitrogen elimination efficiency. In this study, an iron-based multi-solid carbon source composite that immobilized aerobic denitrifying bacteria ZS1 (IMCSCP) was synthesized to treat aerobic (DO > 5 mg/L), low temperature (<15 °C) and low C/N ratio (C/N = 4) aquaculture wastewater. The results showed that the sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) packed with IMCSCP exhibited the highest nitrogen removal performance, with removal rates of 95.63% and 85.44% for nitrate nitrogen and total nitrogen, respectively, which were 33.03% and 30.75% higher than those in the reactor filled with multi-solid carbon source composite (MCSC). Microbial community and network analysis showed that Pseudomonas furukawaii ZS1 successfully colonized the SBBR filled with IMCSCP, and Exiguobacterium, Cellulomonas and Pseudomonas were essential for the nitrogen elimination. Metagenomic analysis showed that an increase in gene abundance related to carbon metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, extracellular polymer substance synthesis and electron transfer in the IMCSCP, enabling denitrification in the SBBR to be achieved via multiple pathways. The results of this study provided new insights into the microbial removal mechanism of nitrogen in SBBR packed with IMCSCP at low temperatures.

Use of magnetic powder to effectively improve the denitrification employing the activated sludge fermentation liquid as carbon source. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2023; 348:119049. Abstract
Nitrogen removal is often limited in municipal wastewater treatment due to the lack of sufficient carbon source. Utilizing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation broth as a carbon source is an ideal alternative to reduce the cost for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and improve denitrification efficiency simultaneously. In this study, an anaerobic system was applied for simultaneous denitrification and WAS fermentation and the addition of magnetic microparticles (MMP) were confirmed to enhance both denitrification and WAS fermentation. Firstly, the addition of MMP increased the nitrate reduction rate by over 25.36% and improve the production of N2. Additionally, the equivalent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the detected VFAs increased by 7.06%-14.53%, suggesting that MMP promoted the WAS fermentation. The electron transfer efficiency of denitrifies was accelerated by MMP via electron-transporting system (ETS) activity and cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, which might result in the promotional denitrification and WAS fermentation performance. Furthermore, the high-throughput sequencing displayed that, MMP enriched key microbes capable of degrading the complex organics (Chloroflexi, Synergistota and Spirochaetota) as well as the typical denitrifies (Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 and Denitratisoma). Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy to realize simultaneous WAS utilization and denitrification for WWTPs.

Abstract
The nitrogen removal efficiency and distribution of microbial community in a denitrification process aided by zero-valent iron (ZVI) under low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) were assessed in this study. Experimental results demonstrated that the nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE) increased to 96.4 ± 2.72% and 63.3 ± 4.02% after continuous addition of ZVI with molar ratio of ZVI to nitrate (NO3--N) (ZVI/N) of 6 at C/N of 3 and 2, respectively, which was 4% and 7.7% higher than the blank one. Meanwhile, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) could be used as electron transfer medium and endogenous carbon source for denitrification system and also the production of which increased by 28.43% and 53.10% under ZVI stimulation compared to the control group. Finally, a symbiotic system composed by autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification bacteria was formed by aid of ZVI. This study proposed new insights into denitrification process improved by ZVI.

Abstract
Solid-phase denitrification shows promise for removing nitrate (NO3--N) from water. Biological denitrification uses external carbon sources to remove nitrogen from wastewater, among which agriculture waste is considered the most promising source due to its economic and efficiency advantages. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent nitrate concentration (INC) are the main factors influencing biological denitrification. This study explored the effects of HRT and INC on solid-phase denitrification using wheat husk (WH) as a carbon source. A solid-phase denitrification system with WH carbon source was constructed to explore denitrification performance with differing HRT and INC. The optimal HRT and INC of the wheat husk-denitrification reactor (WH-DR) were 32 h and 50 mg/L, respectively. Under these conditions, NO3--N and total nitrogen removal rates were 97.37 ± 2.68% and 94.08 ± 4.01%, respectively. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the dominant phyla in the WH-DR operation were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Campilobacterota. Among the dominant genera, Diaphorobacter (0.85%), Ideonella (0.38%), Thiobacillus (4.22%), and Sulfurifustis (0.60%) have denitrification functions; Spirochaeta (0.47%) is mainly involved in the degradation of WH; and Acidovorax (0.37%) and Azospira (0.86%) can both denitrify and degrade WH. This study determined the optimal HRT and INC for WH-DR and provides a reference for the development and application of WH as a novel, slow-release carbon source in treating aquaculture wastewater.

Abstract
To bridge the organic-dependent barrier on nitrogen from low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) municipal wastewater, employing algal biochar supported nano zero-valent iron (ABC-nZVI) was investigated using A/A/O-MBR. Firstly, it can be seen that adequate carbon source is indispensable for the removal, since total nitrogen (TN) removal reached 77.89 % with the influent C/N of 7.8. Secondly, conducted in batch experiments with different doses of ABC-nZVI with/without active sludge, removal efficiency of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and the effective time achieved 84.94 % and 24 h with an ABC-nZVI dose of 300 mg/L, respectively. Thirdly, it was found that the duration of high-efficiency denitrification reached 9 h with the addition of 250 mg/L of ABC-nZVI to the anoxic tank of A/A/O-MBR, and the effluent ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) also meet the national discharge standard. Besides, biodiversity of both anoxic and aerobic sludge was apparently promoted with the addition of ABC-nZVI, while the lab-scale A/A/O-MBR could also be fully rehabilitated within 12 h. Finally, predicted through PICRUSt2, relevant abundance of functional genes involved in nitrogen metabolism could be enriched by nZVI addition. As an alternative supporting electron donor and mediator, ABC-nZVI can also be participated in the enhanced nitrogen removal in A/A/O-MBR at low C/N.

Gu X, Peng Y, Sun S, He S. Simultaneous denitrification and iron-phosphorus precipitation driven by plant biomass coupled with iron scraps in subsurface flow constructed wetlands. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2022; 322:116104. Abstract
This study investigated the interaction between plant biomass and iron scraps and their influence on nitrogen (including nitrate and ammonia) and phosphorus removal in the subsurface flow constructed wetland. The results showed that with the addition of 0.5 g L-1 of plant biomass and 5.0 g L-1 of iron scraps, the nitrate, total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal were simultaneously improved. During 35 days of continuous operation, the plant biomass played main effect on the enhanced denitrification, accounting for about 57%, while iron scraps enhanced the other 43% of nitrogen removal and most phosphorus removal through precipitation inside the wetlands. Iron scraps could benefit the degradation of cellulose into low molecular carbohydrates by 10%, and the biomass could promote the oxidation of iron and increase the total phosphorus removal by 15%. Plant biomass coupled with iron scraps also improved simultaneously the richness, diversity and evenness of microbial community and promoted the abundance of Nitrospira (17.37%) and Thiobacillus (8.46%) in wetlands. In practice, putting iron scraps as matrix and placing plant biomass in the influent region would be a better choice. This research would provide a new method for effective utilization of plant biomass and iron scraps and further treatment of low-polluted wastewater in the wetlands.

Abstract
A two-stage anoxic/oxic (A/O)-moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system with multiple chambers was established for municipal wastewater treatment. At the total hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 11.2 h and nitrate recycling ratio of 1, the removal efficiencies reached 83.8%, 82.5%, and 77.8% for soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), 98.0%, 97.5%, and 94.9% for ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and 91.8%, 92.0%, and 87.7% for total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) in summer, autumn and winter, respectively. Biofilms with functional bacterial populations were formed in the pre-anoxic reactors, the pre-oxic reactors, the post-anoxic reactors and the post-oxic reactors of the two-stage A/O-MBBR system. The highest nitrification potential was found in the last oxic reactor of the first A/O-MBBR subsystem with the highest relative abundances of the functional genes including [EC:1.14.99.39] and [EC:1.7.2.6]). The highest denitrification potential was found in the post-anoxic reactors with the highest relative abundances of the functional genes including [EC:1.7.2.1], [EC:1.7.2.5] and [EC:1.7.2.4]. This work constructed an efficient municipal biological nitrogen removal technology to achieve high effluent nitrogen standards in winter, and investigated its working mechanism to provide a basis for its design and optimization.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2022; 212:113453. Abstract
Nitrate and sulfate are crucial factors of eutrophication and black and odorous water in the surface water and thus have raised increasing environmental concerns. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are the last ecological barrier before effluent enters the natural water body. To explore the simultaneous removal of nitrate and sulfate, the CW microcosms of CW-Con (with quartz sand), CW-ZVI (quartz sand and zero-valent iron), CW-Mag (quartz sand and magnetite), CW-ZVI + Mag (quartz sand, ZVI and magnetite) groups were set up under the low (100 mg/L)/high (300 mg/L) chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. Under the high COD condition, CW-ZVI group showed the best performance in nitrate (97.1%) and sulfate (96.9%) removal. Under the low COD concentration, the removal content of nitrate and sulfate in CW-ZVI group was better than CW-Mag group. The reason for this result was that zero-valent iron (ZVI) could be the electron donor for nitrate and sulfate reduction. Meanwhile, ZVI promoted chemical denitrification under high COD concentration according to PCA analysis. In addition, the produced sulfides inhibited the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria, resulting in the lowest nitrate removal rate in CW-Mag group with sufficient electron donors. This study provided an alternative method to enhance simultaneous sulfate and nitrate removal in CWs.

THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 817:153061. [PMID: 35026271 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.153061] [Citation(s) in RCA: 91] [Impact Index Per Article: 45.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/23/2021] [Revised: 01/06/2022] [Accepted: 01/07/2022] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
The carbon source is essential as an electron donor in the heterotrophic denitrification process. When there is a lack of organic carbon sources in the system, an external carbon source is needed to improve denitrification efficiency. This review compiles the effects of liquid, solid and gaseous carbon sources on denitrification. Sodium acetate has better denitrification efficiency and is usually the first choice for external carbon sources. Fermentation by-products have been demonstrated to have the same denitrification efficiency as sodium acetate. Compared with cellulose-rich materials, biodegradable polymers have better and more stable denitrification performance in solid-phase nitrification, but their price is higher than the former. Methane as a gaseous carbon source is studied mainly by aerobic methane oxidation coupled with denitrification, which is feasible using methane as a carbon source. Liquid carbon sources are better controlled and utilized than solid carbon sources and gaseous carbon sources. In addition, high carbon to nitrogen ratio and hydraulic retention time can promote denitrification, while high dissolved oxygen (DO>2.0 mg L-1) will inhibit the denitrification process. At the same time, high temperature is conducive to the decomposition of carbon sources by microorganisms. This review also considers the advantages and disadvantages of different carbon sources and cost analysis to provide a reference for looking for more economical and effective external carbon sources in the future.

Simultaneous shortcut nitrification and denitrification in a hybrid membrane aerated biofilms reactor (H-MBfR) for nitrogen removal from low COD/N wastewater. WATER RESEARCH 2022; 211:118027. Abstract
The residues of nitrogen contaminants due to insufficient organic carbon sources in sewage has always been the main problem faced by wastewater treatment plants in the process of nitrogen removal. In this study, simultaneous shortcut nitrification and denitrification (SND) was achieved in the hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) for treating low COD/N ratio (∼x223C 4: 1) wastewater. The effects of the aeration pressure and the influent COD/N ratio in H-MBfR were investigated and further optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM). By controlling the dissolved oxygen to achieve SND, the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, COD and TN of low COD/N ratio wastewater reached maximum values of 95.52%, 96.61% and 72.23%, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that the influent COD/N ratio had an obvious influence on the microbial community structure. In particular, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and denitrifying bacteria had a good commensalism when the COD/N ratio was 4.3. Compared to control reactor, the analysis of membrane bio-fouling showed that H-MBfR has a lower amount of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on membrane and a low concentration of MLSS in bulk liquid, which is helpful for the longer-term operation of H-MBfR.
