Application of response surface methodology for optimization of lead biosorption in an aqueous solution by Aspergillus niger

Valorization of castor seed shell waste as lead adsorbent by treatment with hot phosphoric acid: Optimization and evaluation of adsorption properties

Lead is used in many industries such as refining, mining, battery manufacturing, smelting. Releases of lead from these industries is one of the major public health concerns due to widespread persistence in the environment and its resulting poisoning character. In this work, the castor seed shell (CSS) waste was exploited for preparing a beneficial bio-adsorbent for removal of Pb(II) ions from water. The raw CSS was modified with H3PO4 at different acid concentrations, impregnation ratios, activation times, and temperatures. An optimum adsorption capacity was observed for CSS modified with 2 M acid, 5 mL g-1 solid to liquid ratio, treated at 95 °C for 160 min. Exploiting acid modification, the SEM, XRD, and FTIR analyses show some alterations in functional groups and the surface morphology of the biomass. The impacts of physiochemical variables (initial lead ions concentration, pH, adsorbent dose and adsorption time) on the lead removal percentage were investigated, using response surface methodology (RSM). Maximum removal of 72.26% for raw CSS and 97.62% for modified CSS were obtained at an initial lead concentration (50 mg L-1), pH (5.7), adsorption time (123 min) and adsorbent dosage (1.1 g/100 mL). Isothermal and kinetics models were fitted to adsorption equilibrium data and kinetics data for the modified CSS and the adsorption system was evaluated thermodynamically and from the energy point of view. Isothermal scrutinization indicated the mono-layer nature of adsorption, and the kinetics experimental outcomes best fitted with the pseudo-second-order, implying that the interaction of lead ions and hot acid-treated CSS was the rate-controlling phenomenon of process. Overall, results illustrated that the hot acid-treated biomass-based adsorbent can be considered as an alternative bio-adsorbent for removing lead from water media.

Thermodynamic, kinetic, and equilibrium studies of Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) ion biosorption onto treated Ageratum conyzoid biomass

The issue of environmental contamination, particularly caused by the existence of heavy metal particles, is a major and widely recognized subject that receives substantial global attention. The remediation of Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) ionic metal particles from synthetic wastewater using chemically treated plant leaves of Ageratum conyzoides (TAC) as a biosorbent was investigated. The biosorption process was implemented utilizing a batch system, wherein several operational parameters were considered, including temperature, pH, agitation time, biosorbent dosage, and initial concentration of the metal ion. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and D-R isotherm models were used to evaluate equilibrium data. The analyzed parameter exhibits characteristics that were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm. The observed biosorption capacities (qm) of Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II) ions on the TAC were measured as 51.573, 30.49, 33.53, and 35.91 mg/g, respectively, at a temperature of 22 °C. The affinity sequence of these metal ions follows the order Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II). The measured values for the biosorption free energy change (ΔG) of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) metal ions ranged from -1.017 to -4.723, -1.368 to -3.612, -2.785 to -5.21, and -1.047 to -5.135 kJ/mol, respectively. The enthalpy (ΔH) for Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) were determined to be +19.33, +6.82, +14.83, and +38.07 kJ/mol, respectively. Similarly, the corresponding entropy changes (ΔS) for the same series of metal ions were recorded as +0.075, +0.064, +0.063, and +0.135 kJ/mol.K. The pseudo-second-order kinetic models yielded superior outcomes in comparison to the pseudo-first-order kinetic models. The findings of the experiment indicated that the TAC demonstrates favorable efficacy in extracting all four metal ions. Hence, the utilization of biomass derived from Ageratum conyzoides leaves has proven to be a viable and economically feasible approach for biosorption of all four metals.

A novel method for production of nitrogen fertilizer with low energy consumption by efficiently adsorbing and separating waste ammonia

Recovering waste NH3 to be used as a source of nitrogen fertilizer or liquid fuel has recently attracted much attention. Current methods mainly utilize activated carbon or metal-organic frameworks to capture NH3, but are limited due to low NH3 adsorption capacity and high cost, respectively. In this study, novel porous materials that are low cost and easy to synthesize were prepared as NH3 adsorbents by precipitation polymerization with acid optimization. The results showed that adsorption sites (‒COOH, -OH, and lactone) which form chemical adsorption or hydrogen bonds with NH3 were successfully regulated by response surface methods. Correspondingly, the dynamic NH3 adsorption capacity increased from 5.45 mg g-1 to 129 mg g-1, which is higher than most known activated carbon and metal-organic frameworks. Separation performance tests showed that NH3 could also be separated from CO2 and CH4. The findings in this study will advance the industrialization of NH3 polymer adsorbents and provide technical support for the recycling of waste NH3.

Optimization of biochar production from greywater grown polyculture microalgae using microwave pyrolysis

Biochar was produced from polyculture microalgae cultivated in greywater using microwave pyrolysis. The highest biochar yield and fixed carbon content of 49.9% and 68.7% were obtained at microwave power (P) of 800 W and reaction time (T) of 8.6 min. The developed quadratic models, 166.96 - 0.23P - 3.87 T - 3.49 x10-3PT + 1.73 x10-4P2 + 0.13 T2 and - 73.79 + 0.29P + 1.86 T - 1.80 x10-4P2 could predict biochar yield and fixed carbon content respectively with errors of 6.2 and 7.9%. The volatile matter (VM), fixed carbon (FC), and high heating value (HHV) of the biomass were 69.2%. 23.4% and 17.6 MJ/Kg, respectively. VM, FC, and HHV for biochar obtained at optimum conditions were 20.2%, 68.7%, and 28.3 MJ/Kg, respectively. The process had a net positive energy balance of 11.32 MJ/Kg and energy efficiency of 1.76. This study paves the way for biochar production from greywater-grown microalgae, contributing to waste valorization and energy sustainability.

Response Methodology Optimization and Artificial Neural Network Modeling for the Removal of Sulfamethoxazole Using an Ozone-Electrocoagulation Hybrid Process

Removing antibiotics from water is critical to prevent the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, protect ecosystems, and maintain the effectiveness of these vital medications. The combination of ozone and electrocoagulation in wastewater treatment provides enhanced removal of contaminants, improved disinfection efficiency, and increased overall treatment effectiveness. In this work, the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from an aqueous solution using an ozone-electrocoagulation (O-EC) system was optimized and modeled. The experiments were designed according to the central composite design. The parameters, including current density, reaction time, pH, and ozone dose affecting the SMX removal efficiency of the OEC system, were optimized using a response surface methodology. The results show that the removal process was accurately predicted by the quadric model. The numerical optimization results show that the optimum conditions were a current density of 33.2 A/m², a time of 37.8 min, pH of 8.4, and an ozone dose of 0.7 g/h. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency reached 99.65%. A three-layer artificial neural network (ANN) with logsig-purelin transfer functions was used to model the removal process. The data predicted by the ANN model matched well to the experimental data. The calculation of the relative importance showed that pH was the most influential factor, followed by current density, ozone dose, and time. The kinetics of the SMX removal process followed the first-order kinetic model with a rate constant of 0.12 (min^-1). The removal mechanism involves various processes such as oxidation and reduction on the surface of electrodes, the reaction between ozone and ferrous ions, degradation of SMX molecules, formation of flocs, and adsorption of species on the flocs. The results obtained in this work indicate that the O-EC system is a potential approach for the removal of antibiotics from water.

Binary toxicity of engineered silica nanoparticles (nSiO2) and arsenic (III) to zebrafish (Danio rerio): application of response surface methodology

Increasing production and use of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) leads to their release into the aquatic environments where they can interact with other hazardous contaminants, such as heavy metals, and threaten aquatic organisms. This study considers the ecotoxicity of arsenic (III) and silica nanoparticles (nSiO₂), individually and simultaneously, to the zebrafish (Danio rerio) using response surface methodology (RSM) under central composite design (CCD). The results revealed that in the treatments within the concentration range of 1 to 5 mg L^-1 arsenic and 1-100 mg L^-1 nSiO₂, no mortality was observed after 96 h. The optimal conditions for achieving the lowest effect of simultaneous toxicity in the concentration range of nSiO₂ and arsenic were 100 and 7 mg L^-1, respectively. Accordingly, the desirable function of the predicted model was found to be 0.78. According to these results, arsenic is toxic for zebrafish. Importantly, exposure to nSiO₂ alone did not cause acute toxicity in the studied species, while arsenic toxicity decreased by increasing the concentration of nSiO₂.

Intensification of strontium (II) ion biosorption on Sargassum sp via response surface methodology

A batch system was employed to investigate the biosorption of strontium (II) on Sargassum sp. The biosorption of strontium on Sargassum sp was studied with response surface methodology to determine the combined effect of temperature, initial metal ion concentration, biomass treatment, biosorbent dosage and pH. Under optimal conditions, the algae's biosorption capacity for strontium (initial pH 7.2, initial strontium concentration 300 mg/l for Mg-treated biomass and biosorbent dosage 0.1 g in 100 mL metal solution) was measured at 103.95 mg/g. In our analysis, equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Results show that the best fit is provided by the Freundlich model. Biosorption dynamics analysis of the experimental data indicated that strontium (II) was absorbed into algal biomass in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model well.

Ammoniacal leaching process for the selective recovery of value metals from waste lithium-ion batteries

The recovery of valuable metals in spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is not only environmentally sustainable but also economically advantageous. In this research, ammoniacal leaching process was adopted to selectively extract valuable metals from the mixed types of cathode active materials. By employing the ammonium sulphite as the reductant, while the ammonia and ammonium carbonate are used to provide NH₃ to complex metal elements. The Eh-pH diagrams were used to study the extraction behaviour of Co, Li, Ni and Mn during ammoniacal leaching, and the Co, Ni can be leached out as the complexes ([Ni(NH₃)_n]²⁺, [Co(NH₃)_m]²⁺), while the Li was leached out as metallic ion. Manganese is first leached out as [Mn(NH₃)_β]²⁺ and then precipitated as (NH₄)₂Mn(SO₃)₂·H₂O and (NH₄)₂Mn(SO₄)₃ when an excess of ammonium sulphites added to the solution. A detailed understanding of the ammoniacal selective leaching process is carried out by investigating the effects of factors such as reaction temperature (50-90 ℃), leaching time (2-6 h), agitation intensity (400-900 rpm) and solid-to-liquid ratio (10-50 g/L). The experiment of response surface methodology shows that significant interactions exist between ammonium sulphite and ammonium carbonate, ammonium sulphite and ammonia according to the leaching efficiency of Co. Under the optimum conditions, Co, Li, Ni, Mn and Al can be leached out with the efficiencies of 84.56%, 90.31%, 64.13%, 4.53% and 1.72%, respectively. The results proved the possibility of selective leaching. Summarily, this research is potentially beneficial for the design of a selective recycling technique.

Microbial remediation mechanisms and applications for lead-contaminated environments

High concentrations of lead (Pb) in agricultural soil and wastewater represent a severe threat to the ecosystem and health of living organisms. Among available removal techniques, microbial remediation has attracted much attention due to its lower cost, higher efficiency, and less impact on the environment; hence, it is an effective alternative to conventional physical or chemical Pb-remediation technologies. In the present review, recent advances on the Pb-remediation mechanisms of bacteria, fungi and microalgae have been reported, as well as their detoxification pathways. Based on the previous researches, microorganisms have various remediation mechanisms to cope with Pb pollution, which are basically categorized into biosorption, bioprecipitation, biomineralization, and bioaccumulations. This paper summarizes microbial Pb-remediation mechanisms, factors affecting Pb removal, and examples of each case are described in detail. We emphatically discuss the mechanisms of microbial immobilization of Pb, which can resist toxicity by synthesizing nanoparticles to convert dissolved Pb(II) into less toxic forms. The tolerance mechanisms of microbes to Pb are discussed at the molecular level as well. Finally, we conclude the research challenges and development prospects regarding the microbial remediation of Pb-polluted environment. The current review provides insight of interaction between lead and microbes and their potential applications for Pb removal.

Evaluating the survival of Aspergillus niger in a highly polluted red soil with addition of Phosphogypsum and bioorganic fertilizer

Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can enhance P release from phosphate minerals to immobilize heavy metals. However, this promotion substantially depends on their survival in highly polluted soils. The aim of this study was to investigate the survival of PSF after addition of phosphogypsum (PG) and bioorganic fertilizer (BF) in the soil with coexistence of multiple heavy metals, e.g., Pb, As, Cd, Sb, etc. Addition of typical PSF (Aspergillus niger) did not promote the formation of pyromorphite (the most stable form of Pb), possibly due to the buffering effect of the soil (the secreted oxalic acid was neutralized) and limited P supply. Meanwhile, despite that A. niger has high tolerance to heavy metal stress, its survival was significantly declined due to the deficiency of available P. It was also shown that PG, as the major by-product in phoschemical industry, still has relatively high available P compared with common natural soils. PG addition dramatically increased available P (up to 93.87 mg/kg) and the subsequent fungal growth. However, sole PG did not promote the formation of pyromorphite, probably as the abundant Fe²⁺ and Mn²⁺ prevented the contact between PO₄^3- and Pb²⁺ in the soil system. The enhanced soil respiration after addition of BF and PG confirmed the promoted microbial activity (elevated to 3465.58 μg C kg h^-1). This study showed PG's potential as P source for both microbial growth and heavy metal remediation in soil system. A combination of PG, A. niger, and BF can hence achieve long-term bioremediation of heavy metals.

Study on graphene-based emulsions as oil displacement agent

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by the improved Hummers method, and a synergistically stabilized emulsion of GO and emulsifier was formulated. The best emulsion formula obtained by Response Surface Methodology consists of 1.39‰ GO, and 2.92‰ OP-10; the water-oil ratio is 4:6, achieving an emulsion index of 92.83%. The emulsion still maintained good stability under high temperature and high salt conditions, meeting the environmental requirements of medium and low permeability reservoirs. For injected water flooding, emulsion flooding could increase the oil recovery by 15.41%.

Lignocellulosic-Based Materials from Bean and Pistachio Pod Wastes for Dye-Contaminated Water Treatment: Optimization and Modeling of Indigo Carmine Sorption

In this work, biomass lignocellulosic materials extracted via chemical and physical treatments from bean and pistachio pod waste were used for the optimized elimination of Indigo Carmine (IC) from aqueous medium, using a design of experiments methodology. The physicochemical properties of the studied materials (raw and treated counterparts) used for the sorption of IC were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDX, and thermal analysis. Key variables influencing the adsorption of IC, namely the initial IC concentration, the pH of the solution, the stirring time and the mass of adsorbents, were optimized by the central composite design (CCD) with three center points, the measured response being the amount of IC adsorbed. The optimal conditions obtained from the statistical analysis for the removal of IC were as follows: maximum adsorbed amounts of IC: 1.81 mg/g, 2.05 mg/g, 3.56 mg/g; 7.42 mg/g, 8.95 mg/g, 15.35 mg/g, for raw bean pods (RBS), BST1 and BST2 (bean pods chemically treated), and for raw pistachio pods (RPS), PST1 and PST2 (pistachio pods chemically treated), respectively. The pseudo-second-order nonlinear kinetics model well described the IC adsorption kinetics for RBS, BST1 and BST2, while the Elovich model was properly fitted by RPS, PST1, and PST2 biomaterials data. The Freundlich isotherm best described the shrinkage of IC on different sorbents. The good correlation of the experimental data of the IC with respect to the Freundlich isotherm indicated a multilayer adsorption with heterogeneous adsorption sites and different energies. The interest of this work consisted in developing analytical methods for the treatment of water polluted by dyes by using biosorbents, local biological materials widely available and inexpensive. The results collected in this work highlighted the interesting structural, morphological, and physico-chemical properties of the agro-waste used in the study, which properties allowed an important fixation of the target dye in solution. The research showed that the agro-waste used in the study are possible precursors to locally manufacture adsorbents at low cost, thus allowing the efficient removal of waste and dyes in liquid effluents.

Applicability of bio-synthesized nanoparticles in fungal secondary metabolites products and plant extracts for eliminating antibiotic-resistant bacteria risks in non-clinical environments

The abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the prawn pond effluents can substantially impact the natural environment. The settlement ponds, which are the most common treatment method for farms wastewater, might effectively reduce the suspended solids and organic matter. However, the method is insufficient for bacterial inactivation. The current paper seeks to highlight the environmental issue associated with the distribution of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) from prawn farm wastewater and their impact on the microbial complex community in the surface water which receiving these wastes. The inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in prawn wastewater is strongly recommended because the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment causes water pollution and public health issues. The nanoparticles are more efficient for bacterial inactivation. They are widely accepted due to their high chemical and mechanical stability, broad spectrum of radiation absorption, high catalytic activity, and high antimicrobial activity. Many studies have examined the use of fungi or plants extract to synthesis zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). It is evident from recent papers in the literature that green synthesized ZnO NPs from microbes and plant extracts are non-toxic and effective. ZnO NPs inactivate the bacterial cells as a function for releasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and zinc ions. The inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria tends to be more than 90% which exhibit strong antimicrobial behavior against bacterial species.

Biosorption optimization of lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions by two novel nanosilica-immobilized fungal mutants

AIMS

This study aims at immobilization of fungal mutants on nanosilica-carriers for designing efficient biosorbents as a significant new technology for decontamination practices and maximizing their heavy metal (HM) sorption proficiency through the experimental design methodology.

MATERIALS AND RESULTS

Endophytic fungal mutant strains, Chaetomium globosum El26 mutant and Alternaria alternata S5 mutant were heat inactivated then immobilized, each separately, on nanosilica (NSi) carriers to formulate two separated nano-biosorbents. The formulated NSi-Chaetomium globosum El26 mutant (NSi-Chae El26 m) was investigated for Pb⁺² uptake while, the formulated NSi-Alternaria alternata S5 mutant (NSi-Alt S5 m) was investigated for Cd⁺² uptake, each through a batch equilibrium protocol. Before and after the metal sorption process, the designed nano-biosorbents were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared analysis. Sorption pH, contact time, sorbent concentration, and initial HM concentration, were statistically optimized using a Box-Behnken design (BBD). Results showed that NSi-Chae El26 m was efficient in Pb⁺² uptake with maximum biosorption capacities of 199.0 while, NSi-Alt S5 m was efficient in Cd⁺² uptake with maximum biosorption capacities of 162.0 mg∙g^-1 . Moreover, the equilibrium data indicated that the adsorption of Pb⁺² and Cd⁺² by the tested nano-biosorbents fitted to the Freundlich isotherm.

CONCLUSIONS

The formulated nano-biosorbents resulted in higher HM biosorption of metal ions from aqueous solution than that obtained by the free fungal biomass. The biosorption statistical modelling described the interactions between the tested sorption parameters and predicted the optimum values for maximum HM biosorption capacity by the two designed nano-biosorbents.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

These findings verify that members of the endophytic fungal genera Alternaria and Chaetomium are suitable to produce nano-biosorbents for decontamination practices after treatment by gamma mutagenesis, heat inactivation, and nanosilica immobilization. Moreover, statistical optimization can assist to evaluate the optimal conditions to produce such bioremediation material.

Biosorption of hazardous waste from the municipal wastewater by marine algal biomass

Lead is one of the highly toxic heavy metals causes various diseases even at very lower concentrations to human and affects eco-system. It is mainly released into the water through industrial activities. Phytoremediation is useful to degrade, reduce, metabolize and assimilate lead from wastewater. In this study, Turbinaria ornata was collected from the sea and dried biomass was used for biosorption of heavy metals. Adsorption of heavy metal was maximum after 100 min incubation with alga powder at acidic pH (4.5). The interactive effects of lead concentration, contact times, pH, biomass concentration and agitation speed was evaluated by a two-level full factorial design. Initial lead concentration, agitation speed and biomass concentration were the most important variables affecting lead removal (p < 0.001) were selected for optimization using central composite rotatable design. Lead removal was found to be maximum (99.8%) in optimized conditions: initial lead 99.8 mg/L, 250 rpm agitation speed and 16.2 g/L biomass concentrations. Municipal wastewater was collected and lead concentration (0.013 mg/L) and physiochemical factors were analyzed. Algal biomass removed >98.5% lead form the wastewater within 10 min in an optimized condition. The present study confirmed the potential application of T. ornata for the removal of lead from contaminated environment.

Optimization of Epoxidation Palm-Based Oleic Acid to Produce Polyols

Optimization of epoxidation by using response surface methodology (RSM) based on three-level three-factorial central composite design (CCD) was used. Response percentage of relative oxirane content (%RCO) was studied to determine the optimum reaction condition for production of polyols. The predicted value of model (85 %) was excellent in accordance to experimental value (81 %). All parameters (temperature, molar ratio of formic acid to oleic acid and molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to oleic acid) were significant in influencing the course of epoxidation reaction (p < 0.05). The interaction between all parameters is also highly significant with p < 0.0001. Optimum reaction conditions obtained from RSM were as follows: the temperature 318 K, molar ratio of formic acid to oleic acid 1.64:1 and molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to oleic acid 2:1. The epoxidation of palm oleic acid was carried out by using in situ performic acid. FTIR analysis showed the formation of epoxy functional groups at optimum reaction condition at the wavelength of 1340 cm-1. This epoxide group was used to produce polyols by using hydroxylation process and the polyols functional group was detected at the wavelength of 816 cm-1

Optimized enzymatic synthesis of digestive resistant anomalous isoquercitrin glucosides using amylosucrase and response surface methodology

Diverse flavonoid glycosides are present in the plant kingdom. Advanced technologies have been utilized to synthesize glycosyl flavonoids which exhibit good physicochemical characteristics. Previously, novel isoquercitrin (IQ) mono-, di-, and tri-glucosides (IQ-G1', IQ-G2', and IQ-G3'; atypical IQ-Gs (IQ-G_ap)) were synthesized through the reaction of amylosucrase. Here, the regio-selective transglycosylation yields were predicted using response surface methodology for three variables (glucose donor (sucrose; 100-1500 mM), glucose acceptor (IQ; 100-400 µM), and pH (5.0-8.8)) using 1 unit/mL of enzyme at 45 °C; then, the optima were verified according to the experimental responses. Acidity (pH 5.0) was a major contributor for IQ-G1' production (> 50%), and high sucrose concentration (1500 mM) limited IQ-G3' production (< 15%). Low sucrose concentration (100 mM) at pH 7.0 promoted higher glycosyl IQ production (> 30%). Time-course production of IQ-G_ap showed an exponential growth with different rates. IQ-G_ap was stable under the simulated intestinal conditions compared with typical IQ-Gs. Digestive stable IQ-G_ap can be effectively synthesized by modulating reaction conditions; thereby, atypical glycosyl products may contribute to the elucidation of nutraceutical potential of flavonoid glycosides. KEY POINTS: •Predictions of RSM were validated for the regio-selective IQ-G_ap production. • Time course changes of IQ-G_ap indicate non-processive glycosylation of DGAS. • IQ-G_ap exceed typical IQ-G in digestive stability at simulated intestinal condition.

Experimental and modeling studies of competitive Pb (II) and Cd (II) bioaccumulation by Aspergillus niger

Co-existence of toxic metals causes complex toxicity to microorganisms during bioremediation in water and soil. This study investigated the immobilization of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ by fungus Aspergillus niger, which has been widely applied to environmental remediation. Five treatments were set, i.e., CK (no toxic metals), Pb²⁺ only, Cd²⁺ only, Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ = 1:1(molar ratio), and Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ = 2:1. Cadmium induced strong toxicity to the fungus, and maintained the high toxicity during incubation. However, as Pb/Cd ratio increased from 0 to 2, the removal rates of Cd²⁺ by A. niger were raised from 30 to 50%. The elevated activities of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and citrate synthetase (CS) enzymes confirmed that Pb addition could stimulate the growth of A. niger. For instance, citric acid concentrations and CS activities were 463.22 mg/L and 78.37 nmol/min/g, respectively, during 3-day incubation as Pb/Cd = 1. However, these two values were as low as ~ 50 with addition of only Cd. It was hence assumed that appropriate co-existence of Pb²⁺ enhanced microbial activity by promoting TCA cycle of the fungus. Moreover, the SEM analysis and geochemical modeling demonstrated that Pb²⁺ cations were more easily adsorbed and mineralized on A. niger with respect to Cd²⁺. Therefore, instead of intensifying metal toxicity, the addition of appropriate Pb actually weakened Cd toxicity to the fungus. This study sheds a bright future on application of A. niger to the remediation of polluted water with co-existence of Pb and Cd. KEY POINTS: • Cd²⁺ significantly inhibited P consumption, suggesting its high toxicity to A. niger. • Pb²⁺ stimulated the growth of A. niger by promoting TCA cycle in the cells. • Cd²⁺ removal by A. niger were improved with co-existence of Pb²⁺.

Halotolerant and metalotolerant bacteria strains with heavy metals biorestoration possibilities isolated from Uburu Salt Lake, Southeastern, Nigeria

Environmental contaminations by heavy metals are currently an increasing public health concern globally. One key challenge of these toxic metals is the extremely difficulties involved in their detoxification from the environment and effluents because of their non-degradability. An efficient biologic agent with potentials of remediating these toxic metals may ease these ever-increasing problems. We reported toxic metals tolerance and bioremediation potentials of novel bacteria sp. Strains USL2S, USL4W and USL5W isolated from Uburu salt lake, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The phenotypic characteristics and the 16S rRNA gene analyses revealed that USL2S strain belongs to the genus Klebsiella, whereas USL4W and USL5W strains belong to the genus Pseudomonas. The bacteria isolates grew well in media containing 5–15 % of sodium chloride. The bacteria isolate showed capacity to tolerate 50.0 mM Hg⁺² and Pb⁺², 17.0, 12.50 and 4.0mM Ni⁺², Cd⁺², and Zn⁺² respectively in solid media. Pseudomonas putida A4W Strain also tolerated 16.0 mM Cu⁺², while Klebsiella sp. Strain USL2S, Pseudomonas putida USL5W Strain tolerated 4.0 mM each. AAS analyses showed 85, 95, and 95 % Hg; 97.13, 98.89, and 97.55 % Pb; 73.33, 77.42 and 69.72 Cd; 88.06, 99.54, and 97.91 % Ni; 100, 100 and 83.62% Cu; 42.30, 84.52 and 98.80 % Zn removal from media broth incorporated with the tested metals by Klebsiella sp. USL2S, Pseudomonas sp. Strain USL5W and Pseudomonas sp. USL4W respectively. We therefore recommend these novel moderately halophilic and metal tolerant isolates as possible biologic agents for effective bioremediation of mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel, copper and zinc in contaminated environments and effluents.

Carnauba (Copernicia prunifera) palm tree biomass as adsorbent for Pb(II) and Cd(II) from water medium

Plant-based biomass (CFB (carnauba fruit biomass)) obtained from the fruit exocarp of the species Copernicia prunifera (Mill.) H.E. Moore (carnauba) was evaluated for its viability as an adsorbent of potentially toxic metals in aqueous medium. The CFB was characterized by powder X-ray spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and zeta potential to investigate the morphology of the biosorbent and its interaction with water soluble metal ions of Pb and Cd. The biomass presents an amorphous structure, with negative zeta potential (- 2.59 mV), and the presence of functional groups such as O-H, C-O-C, C-H, and C=O. The removal potential of Pb(II) and Cd(II) was performed in a batch system, and monoelement solutions were tested to assess the effects of adsorbent dose and initial metal ion concentration, pH at the point of zero charge (pH_PZC), sorption kinetics, and adsorption capacity. The most appropriate adsorbent concentration was 5 g/L, and sorption studies were carried out at pH 5.0 (pH_PZC = 4.68), in which the surface of the adsorbent shows negative charges and favors the adsorption of metal ions. Kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second order model best fit the experimental data, and equilibrium was reached at 120 min of contact time. The experimental sorption capacity (SC_exp) for Pb and Cd was around 28 and 34 mg/g, respectively, and six different non-linear isotherm models were used to describe the sorption phenomena, among them, four with 2 parameters, i.e., Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR), respectively, and two with 3 parameters, namely, SIPS and Hill. The non-linear Temkin and Freundlich isotherm models best fit the experimental data for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. According to the Langmuir model, Q_max was 26 mg/g and 58 mg/g for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively, indicating the efficiency of CFB as a new alternative to conventional methods for the removal of potentially toxic metals from aqueous medium.

Fabrication and characterization of 3,4-diaminobenzophenone-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent with enhanced VOC adsorption and desorption capacity

The present study, for the first time, utilized 3,4-diaminobenzophenone (DABP)-functionalized Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂ (Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized as a nanoadsorbent for enhancing adsorption and desorption capacity of gaseous benzene and toluene as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs used in adsorption and desorption of benzene and toluene were synthesized by the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The synthesized MNPs were characterized by SEM, FTIR, TGA/DTA, and BET surface area analysis. Moreover, the optimization of the process parameters, namely contact time, initial VOC concentration, and temperature, was performed by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Adsorption results demonstrated that the Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs had excellent adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption capacities for benzene and toluene were found as 530.99 and 666.00 mg/g, respectively, under optimum process parameters (contact time 55.47 min, initial benzene concentration 17.57 ppm, and temperature 29.09 °C; and contact time 57.54 min, initial toluene concentration 17.83 ppm, and temperature 27.93 °C for benzene and toluene, respectively). In addition to the distinctive adsorptive behavior, the Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs exhibited a high reproducibility adsorption and desorption capacity. After the fifth adsorption and desorption cycles, the Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs retained 94.4% and 95.4% of its initial adsorption capacity for benzene and toluene, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm findings suggested that the adsorption mechanisms of benzene and toluene on the Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs were physical processes. The results indicated that the successfully synthesized Fe₃O₄/AC@SiO₂@DABP MNPs can be applied as an attractive, highly effective, reusable, and cost-effective adsorbent for the adsorption of VOC pollutants.Graphical abstract.

Tio2/SiO2/Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles synthesis and application in methyl orange UV photocatalytic removal

Three main parameters affecting TiO₂/SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles activity in photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange were investigated using response surface methodology (SRM). Precipitation method and sol-gel technique were used to prepare SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ electromagnetic composite support and TiO₂/SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ photocatalytically active nanoparticles. The specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore size of the synthesized nanoparticles were respectively equal to 56 m²/g, 0.12 cm³/g and 9.4 nm. The point of zero charge (PZC) of the catalyst was measured to be 5.9. The maximum and minimum photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange using the synthesized nanoparticles were 100% and 30%, respectively. A linear model was fitted to the obtained results with R²_adjusted equal to 0.87. The results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that catalyst concentration, reaction media pH and aeration rate were significantly affected the photocatalytic activity. Optimization was performed considering photocatalytic activity as the main objective functions. In order to maximize photocatalytic activity, catalyst loading, reaction media pH and aeration rate were respectively adjusted to 2,000 ppm, 3 and 2.5 L/min, which resulted in total methyl orange removal. Considering promising photocatalytic activity of TiO₂/SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ along with core-sell nanocomposite separation performance led us to propose this photocatalyst as an alternative solution for treating waste waters.

In-situ fabrication of a spherical-shaped Zn-Al hydrotalcite with BiOCl and study on its enhanced photocatalytic mechanism for perfluorooctanoic acid removal performed with a response surface methodology

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a widely used compound, is harmful to the environment and human health. In this study, a facile one pot solvothermal method of integrating BiOCl with Zn-Al hydrotalcite to form spherical-shaped BiOCl/Zn-Al hydrotalcite (B-BHZA) sample is reported. The characteristics and main factors affecting photocatalytic PFOA and photocatalytic mechanism of BiOCl/Zn-Al hydrotalcite (B-BHZA) are systematically investigated. It is found that spherical-shaped B-BHZA possesses abundant defects and a larger surface area of 64.4 m² g^-1. The factors affecting photocatalytic removal PFOA (e.g., time, pH, initial concentration and dosage) are investigated by modeling the 3D surface response. The removal rate of PFOA is over 90 % in 6 h under UV light at an optimal pH of 2, an initial concentration of 500 μg/L and a dose of dosage 0.5 g/L. The main mechanism occurs by photo-generated h⁺ oxidation and synergistic effects from the photocatalysis process. Though investigating the intermediates of PFOA degradation and F^-, a possibility was proposed that h⁺ initiated the rapidly decarboxylation of PFOA. The unstable perfluoroheptyl group is formatted and further conversed to short chain perfluorocarboxylic acid. This study provides a new insight for the preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts to the treatment of halogenated compounds in UV system.

Design, Operation and Optimization of Constructed Wetland for Removal of Pollutant

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are affordable and reliable green technologies for the treatment of various types of wastewater. Compared to conventional treatment systems, CWs offer an environmentally friendly approach, are low cost, have fewer operational and maintenance requirements, and have a high potential for being applied in developing countries, particularly in small rural communities. However, the sustainable management and successful application of these systems remain a challenge. Therefore, after briefly providing basic information on wetlands and summarizing the classification and use of current CWs, this study aims to provide and inspire sustainable solutions for the performance and application of CWs by giving a comprehensive review of CWs' application and the recent development of their sustainable design, operation, and optimization for wastewater treatment. To accomplish this objective, thee design and management parameters of CWs, including macrophyte species, media types, water level, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and hydraulic loading rate (HLR), are discussed. Besides these, future research on improving the stability and sustainability of CWs are highlighted. This article provides a tool for researchers and decision-makers for using CWs to treat wastewater in a particular area. This paper presents an aid for informed analysis, decision-making, and communication. The review indicates that major advances in the design, operation, and optimization of CWs have greatly increased contaminant removal efficiencies, and the sustainable application of this treatment system has also been improved.

Optimization of microemulsion cleaning sludge conditions using response surface method

Microemulsion cleaning method has been proved to be an effective way to clean oily sludge with low interfacial tension and high solubilizing ability for non-miscible liquids. In this paper, the percentage range of the microemulsion in the formulation was obtained by studying phase behavior of the microemulsion. The response surface method was used to model and optimize the microemulsion to obtain the best formulation: n-BuOH content at 9.89%, NaCl content at 2.24% and AES/APG ratio at 3.75, and the oil removal rate reached 97.28%. Meanwhile, the cleaning conditions of oil sludge were also optimized by the response surface method and the optimal cleaning parameters were determined as liquid-solid ratio at 4.2, stirring rate at 157 r·min^-1, and stirring time at 38 min. In addition, some experiments were carried out to confirm the simulation results, affording the oil removal rate of 98.79%. SEM and FTIR confirmed that the oil on the sludge can be removed by microemulsion.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Aminopropyl-SBA-15 schiff Base hybrid for efficient removal of divalent heavy metal cations from wastewater

The mesoporous silica-polymer hybrid was prepared as an adsorbent for divalent heavy metals (Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cu (II)) from rice husk and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) through three successive steps. The first is the preparation of the mesoporous silica (SBA-15), the second is grafting 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane on SBA-15, and the following step is the formation of Schiff base (PVP-SBA-15) between amine end-capped silica and PVP moieties. The materials were characterized by different techniques, including FTIR, low and wide-angle XRD, N₂-adsorption, and HR-TEM. The NH₂-SBA-15 displayed a moderate affinity toward heavy element ions under study. Grafting of PVP moieties introduces a high affinity toward heavy metal ions, and the adsorption is a well-fitted Langmuir adsorption model. A series of experiment adsorption equilibrium reported with SBA-15, NH₂-SBA-15, and PVP-SBA-15, which showed an adsorption capacity of 128 mg/g (Cu (II)), 175 mg/g (Pb (II)) and 72 mg/g for Ni(II). Kinetic studies have shown that the best way to describe the adsorption process of heavy metals is pseudo-first-order. The value of ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° demonstrated that the adsorption of heavy metals on the PVP-SBA-15 was endothermic in nature and spontaneous. These results exhibited that PVP-SBA-15 material has considerable competence in eliminating heavy metals from wastewater.

Eco-Efficient Green Seaweed Codium decorticatum Biosorbent for Textile Dyes: Characterization, Mechanism, Recyclability, and RSM Optimization

Biosorption using natural waste has emerged as a potential and promising strategy for removal of toxic dyes from wastewaters in comparison to conventional ones. Herein, the Codium decorticatum alga (CDA) was biologically identified and used as a biosorbent for anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions. SEM analysis showed a rough surface with an irregular edge and shape while hydroxyl, amine, sulfur and carboxyl functional groups were identified using FTIR analysis. TGA/DTG confirmed the stability of CDA and the adsorption process. Batch studies were conducted to investigate the effect of operational factors such as initial pH, biosorbent dosage, temperature, initial concentration, and solid/liquid contact time on the biosorption of crystal violet (CV) and Congo red (CR) dyes. For both CV and CR dyes, the biosorption kinetics was accurately described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm was found to be best fitted for equilibrium data. Maximum uptake capacities have attained up to 278.46 mg/g for CV and 191.01 mg/g for CR. The CV and CR dye biosorption mechanism was ultimately manifested through the electrostatic interactions. The regeneration study showed that the CDA presents excellent reuse performance up to four consecutive cycles. The process optimization was performed using the response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design (RSM-BDD). Accordingly, the optimum predicted removal efficiencies using RSM-BBD for CV and CR were obtained, respectively, at 96.9 and 89.8% using a CDA dose of 1.5 g/L, dye concentration of 20 mg/L, pH of 10 for CV, and pH of 4 for CR. Overall, CDA behaves as an efficient, recyclable, cheap, and eco-friendly adsorbent for cleaning-up of dyed effluents.

Sexual Difference in the Optimum Environmental Conditions for Growth and Maturation of the Brown Alga Undaria pinnatifida in the Gametophyte Stage

Undaria pinnatifida is an annual brown kelp growing naturally in coastal areas as a major primary producer in temperate regions and is cultivated on an industrial scale. Kelps have a heteromorphic life cycle characterized by a macroscopic sporophyte and microscopic sexual gametophytes. The sex-dependent effects of different environmental factors on the growth and maturation characteristics of the gametophyte stage were investigated using response surface methodology. Gametophytes were taken from three sites in Japan: Iwate Prefecture, Tokushima Prefecture, and Kagoshima Prefecture in order to confirm the sexual differences in three independent lines. Optimum temperature and light intensity were higher for males (20.7-20.9 °C and 28.6-33.7 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively) than females (16.5-19.8 °C and 26.9-32.5 µmol m-2 s-1), and maturity progressed more quickly in males than females. Optimum wavelengths of light for growth and maturation of the gametophytes were observed for both blue (400-500 nm, λmax 453 nm) and green (500-600 nm; λmax 525 nm) lights and were sex-independent. These characteristics were consistent among the three regional lines. Slower growth optima and progress of maturation could be important for female gametophytes to restrict fertilization and sporophyte germination to the lower water temperatures of autumn and winter, and suggest that the female gametophyte may be more sensitive to temperature than the male. The sexual differences in sensitivity to environmental factors improved the synchronicity of sporeling production.

Process for production of microencapsulated anthocyanin pigments from Rosa pimpinellifolia L. fruits: optimization of aqueous two-phase extraction, microencapsulation by spray and freeze-drying, and storage stability evaluation

Rosa pimpinellifolia L. fruits (RPF) are promising source of anthocyanin pigments. The objectives of this study were to optimization of the aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) process of anthocyanin from RPF and microencapsulation of anthocyanin-rich RPF extract. The optimal ATPE conditions were as follows: 0% HCl, 30% ethanol, 19% ammonium sulfate, and liquid to solid ratio 51.71, 97.71 min, and 30°C extraction temperature. Predicted anthocyanin yield at the optimum conditions was 1578.90 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalent/100 g dry fruit. ATPE resulting in 1.80-fold increase in the purity of anthocyanins when compared to conventional solvent extraction (CSE). The composition of the anthocyanins were determined with HPLC-QTOF-MS. Freeze-drying and spray-drying methods were employed for the production of microencapsulated anthocyanin pigments. The half times of microencapsulated anthocyanins at 4, 25 and 37°C were determined as 12.16, 6.60 and 3.12 months for freeze-dried microcapsules, and 16.50, 9.24 and 4.29 months for spray-dried microcapsules, respectively.

High-performance gas-phase adsorption of benzene and toluene on activated carbon: response surface optimization, reusability, equilibrium, kinetic, and competitive adsorption studies

In recent years, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become a group of major pollutants that endanger human health and the ecological environment. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the gas-phase adsorption processes of benzene and toluene, which are important VOCs, on the activated carbon (AC) produced from Elaeagnus angustifolia seeds by physical activation method. In this context, the central composite design (CCD) approach-based response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to examine and optimize the effects of process parameters on the adsorption of benzene and toluene by AC adsorbent. The characterization of the produced AC was performed by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The optimum process parameters were achieved (adsorption time of 74.98 min, initial benzene concentration of 16.68 ppm, and temperature of 26.97 °C, and adsorption time of 73.26 min, initial toluene concentration of 18.46 ppm and temperature of 29.80 °C) for benzene and toluene, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of benzene and toluene on AC were determined to be 437.36 and 512.03 mg/g, respectively, under optimum parameters. The adsorption process kinetics and equilibrium isotherms were also evaluated. Besides, AC reusability studies were performed five times for the gas-phase adsorption and desorption of benzene and toluene. After five cycles, it was observed that the benzene and toluene adsorption capacity of the AC decreased slightly by 8.10% and 7.42%, respectively. The results revealed that the produced AC could be utilized successfully for the removal of benzene and toluene in the gas-phase adsorption systems because of its high surface area, high adsorption capacity, and high reusability performance. Furthermore, the adsorption processes of benzene and toluene were investigated, both sole components and in a binary mixture. It was concluded that the adsorption behaviors of benzene and toluene against AC were quite different when they were in the competition (in a binary mixture) and without competition (sole components). Effective use of elderberry (Sambucus nigra) pomace in biosorption processes of Fe(III) ions

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) pomace obtained as a result of processing in the food industry was examined for the bioremoval of Fe(III) ions from aqueous solutions in batch experiments. Several physicochemical properties of the biomass were analyzed using a variety of analytical methods, such as particle size distribution, elemental composition (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGA, DTG), specific surface area and average pore diameter (BET adsorption isotherms), volume of pores and pore volume distribution (BJH), morphology (SEM), mid-infrared analysis FT-IR. The impact of adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH and contact time on the process efficiency was studied. The calculated maximum adsorption efficiency and capacity was estimated at 99.5% and 33.25 mg/g, respectively. The biosorption kinetic analysis indicated that the removal process fits better to the pseudo-second order equation and the Langmuir model. Summing up, the biosorbent is a promising low-cost material for the highly effective iron recovery from effluents and improvement of water quality.

Biological nutrient recovery from human urine by enriching mixed microalgal consortium for biodiesel production

Utilization of waste resources is necessary to harness the long-term sustainability of algal technology. The study focused on the use of human urine as the basic nutrient source for culturing native microalgal consortium and further optimized the process parameters using response surface methodology. A full factorial, central composite rotatable design (CCRD) with three variables: urine concentration (1-10% vol of urine/vol of distil water [%v/v]), pH (6.5-9) and light intensity (50-350 μmolphotonsm^-2sec^-1) was used to evaluate the microalgal biomass and lipid content. Results indicated that at 95% confidence limits, the selected factors influence the biomass and lipid productivity. The maximum biomass productivity of 211.63 ± 1.40 mg l^-1 d^-1 was obtained under optimized conditions with 6.50% v/v of urine, pH of 7.69 and at light intensity of 205.40 μmolphotonsm^-2sec^-1. The lipid content was found to increase from 18.96 ± 1.30% in control media to 26.27 ± 1.94% under optimal conditions. The interactive effect of variables over the microalgal biomass and lipid content has also been elucidated. The data obtained were comparable to the BG11 media (control). Optimized diluted urine media in the presence of ammonium ions and under limited nitrate showed better lipid yields. Significant lipid biomolecules were detected in the algal oil extracts obtained from the diluted urine media characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) revealed the presence of several monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in the transesterified algal oil. Such studies would aid in technically realizing the field scale cultivation of microalgae for biofuels.

Resource recovery from low strength wastewater in a bioelectrochemical desalination process

In this research, low strength synthetic wastewaters with chemical oxygen demand less than 300 mg L-1 were treated at different concentrations in a bioelectrochemical desalination process. A process optimization model was utilized to study the performance of the photosynthetic bioelectrochemical desalination process. The variables include substrate (chemical oxygen demand) concentration, total dissolved solids, and microalgae biomass concentration in the cathode chamber. Relationships between the chemical oxygen demand concentration, microalgae, and salt concentrations were evaluated. Power densities and potential energy benefits from microalgal biomass growth were discussed. The results from this study demonstrated the reliability and reproducibility of the photosynthetic microbial desalination process performance followed by a response surface methodology optimization. This study also confirms the suitability of bioelectrochemical desalination process for treating low substrate wastewaters such as agricultural wastewaters, anaerobic digester effluents, and septic tank effluents for net energy production and water desalination.

Microbial Decolorization of Triazo Dye, Direct Blue 71: An Optimization Approach Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

The release of wastewater from textile dyeing industrial sectors is a huge concern with regard to pollution as the treatment of these waters is truly a challenging process. Hence, this study investigates the triazo bond Direct Blue 71 (DB71) dye decolorization and degradation dye by a mixed bacterial culture in the deficiency source of carbon and nitrogen. The metagenomics analysis found that the microbial community consists of a major bacterial group of Acinetobacter (30%), Comamonas (11%), Aeromonadaceae (10%), Pseudomonas (10%), Flavobacterium (8%), Porphyromonadaceae (6%), and Enterobacteriaceae (4%). The richest phylum includes Proteobacteria (78.61%), followed by Bacteroidetes (14.48%) and Firmicutes (3.08%). The decolorization process optimization was effectively done by using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The experimental variables of dye concentration, yeast extract, and pH show a significant effect on DB71 dye decolorization percentage. Over a comparative scale, the ANN model has higher prediction and accuracy in the fitness compared to the RSM model proven by approximated R ² and AAD values. The results acquired signify an efficient decolorization of DB71 dye by a mixed bacterial culture.

Investigation of high-performance adsorption for benzene and toluene vapors by calix[4]arene based organosilica (CBOS)

Calix[4]arene based organosilica (CBOS) was successfully prepared, characterized, and used for the adsorption of benzene and toluene vapors for the first time. The benzene and toluene vapor uptake of CBOS was determined to be 606 and 672 mg g⁻¹, respectively.

Uptake of Pb(II) Ions from Simulated Aqueous Solution via Nanochitosan

In this work, nanochitosan (NC) was prepared through ionic gelation using low molecular weight chitosan and maleic acid (MA). The synthesized NC was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). During preparation, the particle size of the material depended on parameters such as concentration of chitosan and pH of the aqueous solution. After controlling the mentioned parameters, NC smaller than 100 nm was prepared. The chitosan and prepared NC were employed for the adsorption of Pb(II) from an aqueous solution in the form of a batch system. Among the sorption parameters, pH showed the strongest effect on the sorption process and removal of the maximum number of Pb(II) ions was obtained at pH value of 6. Pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were used to track the kinetics of the adsorption process. Langmuir and Freundlich’s isotherms were subjected to the absorption data to evaluate absorption capacity. NC proved to be an excellent adsorbent with a remarkable capacity to eliminate Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions at multiple concentrations. The NC also showed better performance with a comparatively easier preparation process than in other reported work.
