Single and combined effects of nickel (Ni(II)) and cobalt (Co(II)) ions on activated sludge and on other aerobic microorganisms: a review

Scenedesmus sp. as a phycoremediation agent for heavy metal removal from landfill leachate in a comparative study: batch, continuous, and membrane bioreactor (MBR)

Improper disposal of municipal solid waste led to the release of heavy metals into the environment through leachate accumulation, causing a range of health and environmental problems. Phycoremediation, using microalgae to remove heavy metals from contaminated water, was investigated as a promising alternative to traditional remediation methods. This study explored the potential of Scenedesmus sp. as a phycoremediation agent for heavy metal removal from landfill leachate. The study was conducted in batch, continuous, and membrane bioreactor (MBR). In the batch system, Scenedesmus sp. was added to the leachate and incubated for 15 days before the biomass was separated from the suspension. In the continuous system, Scenedesmus sp. was cultured in a flow-through system, and the leachate was continuously fed into the system with flow rates measured at 120, 150, and 180 mL/h for 27 days. The MBR system was similar to the continuous system, but it incorporated a membrane filtration step to remove suspended solids from the treated water. The peristaltic pump was calibrated to operate at five different flow rates: 0.24 L/h, 0.30 L/h, 0.36 L/h, 0.42 L/h, and 0.48 L/h for the MBR system and ran for 24 h. The results showed that Scenedesmus sp. was effective in removing heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) from landfill leachate in all three systems. The highest removal efficiency was observed for Ni, with a removal of 0.083 mg/L in the MBR and 0.068 mg/L in batch mode. The lowest removal efficiency was observed for Zn, with a removal of 0.032 mg/L in the MBR, 0.027 mg/L in continuous mode, and 0.022 mg/L in batch mode. The findings depicted that the adsorption capacity varied among the studied metal ions, with the highest capacity observed for Ni (II) and the lowest for Zn (II), reflecting differences in metal speciation, surface charge interactions, and affinity for the adsorbent material. These factors influenced the adsorption process and resulted in varying adsorption capacities for different metal ions. The study also evaluated the biomass growth of Scenedesmus sp. and found that it was significantly influenced by the initial metal concentration in the leachate. The results of this study suggest that Scenedesmus sp. can be used as an effective phycoremediation agent for removing heavy metals from landfill leachate.

Effect of copper, arsenic and nickel on pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification

Pyritic minerals generally occur in nature together with other trace metals as impurities, that can be released during the ore oxidation. To investigate the role of such impurities, the presence of copper (Cu(II)), arsenic (As(III)) and nickel (Ni(II)) during pyrite mediated autotrophic denitrification has been explored in this study at 30 °C with a specialized microbial community of denitrifiers as inoculum. The three metal(loid)s were supplemented at an initial concentration of 2, 5, and 7.5 ppm and only Cu(II) had an inhibitory effect on the autotrophic denitrification. The presence of As(III) and Ni(II) enhanced the nitrate removal efficiency with autotrophic denitrification rates between 3.3 [7.5 ppm As(III)] and 1.6 [7.5 ppm Ni(II)] times faster than the experiment without any metal(loid) supplementation. The Cu(II) batches, instead, decreased the denitrification kinetics with 16, 40 and 28% compared to the no-metal(loid) control for the 2, 5 and 7.5 ppm incubations, respectively. The kinetic study revealed that autotrophic denitrification with pyrite as electron donor, also with Cu(II) and Ni(II) additions, fits better a zero-order model, while the As(III) incubation followed first-order kinetic. The investigation of the extracellular polymeric substances content and composition showed more abundance of proteins, fulvic and humic acids in the metal(loid) exposed biomass.

Promoted Sb removal with hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cell by ZIF-67-derived modified sulfate-reducing bacteria bio-cathode

Bio-cathode Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) has been widely discovered for heavy metals removal and hydrogen production. However, low electron transfer efficiency and heavy metal toxicity limit MEC treatment efficiency. In this study, ZIF-67 was introduced to modify Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) bio-cathode to enhance the bioreduction of sulfate and Antimony (Sb) with hydrogen production in the MEC. ZIF-67 modified bio-cathode was developed from a bio-anode microbial fuel cell (MFC) by operating with an applied voltage of 0.8 V to reverse the polarity. Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance were done to confirm the performance of the ZIF-67 modified SRB bio-cathode. The synergy reduction of sulfate and Sb was accomplished by sulfide metal precipitation reaction from SRB itself. Maximum sulfate reduction rate approached 93.37 % and Sb removal efficiency could reach 92 %, which relies on the amount of sulfide concentration generated by sulfate reduction reaction, with 0.923 ± 0.04 m³ H₂/m³ of hydrogen before adding Sb and 0.857 m³ H₂/m³ of hydrogen after adding Sb. The hydrogen was mainly produced in this system and the result of gas chromatography (GC) indicated that 73.27 % of hydrogen was produced. Meanwhile the precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm Sb₂S₃ was generated from Sb (V).

SRB-based bioelectrochemical system: A potential multipollutant combatant for enhanced landfill waste stabilization

Due to the lower proportion of organic matter and higher toxicity of the aged landfill, most of the advanced treatment technologies are not effective from economic, environmental, and social perspectives. This study evaluates the potential of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) based bioelectrochemical-system (BES) in the decontamination of landfill wastes by reducing GHGs emissions and levels of soluble pollutants. The landfill waste (solid/leachate) collected from the Pirana Landfill site was assessed for economical long-term treatment and scaling up the feasibility of the designed system. The present system demonstrated significant improvement in volumetric hydrogen production of 3.1:1 (H2:CH4) by suppressing methanogenesis with a significant reduction in heavy metals concentration and other organic components. Despite being amended with 0.1 N ammonia, the treated leachate level of NO3 (2.350 ± 1.077 mg/L) was reduced by 5.3 times, hence reducing further groundwater pollution from landfill leaching. The BES-treated solid waste was more stabilized as shown by a fivefold increase in surface area and can be potentially applied for leachate immobilization and bio-fortification of agricultural fields. The vector arrangement and magnitude with differences in magnitudes for both leachate and solid waste supported the on-site applicability of BES treatment. Concerning the affinity in various treatment systems, the dendrogram clearly showed Ca and Fe placed far from each other (3506.08), in comparison to Fe and Mg (1186.6), followed by Fe and Cu (1544.6). Voltammograms proved the efficacy of the enriched electrochemically active bacteria (EAB), to support the treatment of landfill solid waste and leachate sustainably.

Nickel (ii) effects on Anammox reaction: reactor performance, dehydrogenase, sludge morphology and microbial community changes

Nickel (ii) (Ni²⁺) is considered as one of the necessary trace elements in the process of Anammox culture, but it may have toxic effects at high concentration. This study explored the long-term influence of Ni²⁺ on the denitrification efficiency of Anammox bioreactors. The results showed that when the concentration of Ni²⁺ was 0.5 mg/L, the bioreactor had the highest denitrification efficiency, while the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen gradually decreased at concentrations higher than 2 mg/L, and the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen were 26% and 39.81% at the end of the experiment, respectively. The NRR was decreased from 7.47 kg N/m³ d to 3.28 kg N/m³ d during the whole process. The highest concentration of microbial dehydrogenase was attained in about 40 days; in the meantime, its ability to consume organic matter was also maximized. The sludge morphology was changed from granular cluster to loose flocculant with a small number of spherical and filamentous bacteria and bacilli distributed on the surface. At the end of the experiment, both species richness and community diversity were reduced, and the proportion of the dominant bacteria Candidatus Kuenenia was also decreased from 59.89% to 36.72%.

Recovery potential of aerobic sludge biomass from Co (II) stress in sequencing batch reactors

Heavy metals in higher concentrations are often encountered in domestic sewage of developing and under-developed countries. High metallic concentrations can stress reactor sludge biomass morphology impeding its performance in organics reduction. However, the extent of damage and ability of sludge biomass to recover from the metallic stress is not fully understood. Also, there is no protocol to identify and prevent the sludge biomass from metallic stress in fully functional sewage treatment plants (STPs). This study investigates performance, metabolic activity, morphology, and settling characteristics of the sludge biomass under different Co(II) stress conditions. The extent of recovery in biomass, when the supply of Co(II) metal ion was discontinued in the inlet stream, was explored. The study also proposed a protocol based on simple settling characteristics of sludge biomass to get an early indication of metal infiltration to prevent potential damage to the biomass morphology. Four sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with Co(II) ion concentrations of 0 (designated as RCo0), 5 (RCo5), 25 (RCo25), and 75 mg/L (RCo75) in the feed were operated with a cycle time of 12 h. Reactors were operated for 35 days with Co(II) in the feed (termed as stressed phase operation) followed by 24 days of operation without Co(II) in the feed (termed as recovery phase operation). Results show that COD removal in reactor RCo75 reduced to 48% on the 10th day of stressed phase operation, showing a lag in COD removal due to metallic stress. The activity of biomass in reactors RCo5, RCo25, and RCo75 was reduced by 39%, 45%, and 49%, respectively, in the stressed phase compared to the biomass in control reactor. Recovery in COD removal efficiency and specific biomass activity were observed in all the reactors after the removal of metallic stress. The settleability of sludge biomass in reactors RCo25 and RCo75 was significantly affected. Transformation in the shape of flocs in reactor RCo25 and RCo75 biomasses revealed the prolonged effect of metallic stress, which was observed to be irreversible even during the recovery phase operation.

Facile synthesis of CoFe2O4@BC activated peroxymonosulfate for p-nitrochlorobenzene degradation: Matrix effect and toxicity evaluation

p-Nitrochlorobenzene (p-NCB) is widely used in industry and poses a potential threat to the public health due to its persistence, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Herein, magnetic catalyst CoFe₂O₄@Biochar (CoFe₂O₄@BC) was synthesized by a facile sol-gel method, efficiently activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade p-NCB. The synergistic effect of Fe and Co in well-dispersed CoFe₂O₄ and the electron transfer promote the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (OH, SO₄^- and O₂^-), efficiently removing p-NCB enriched by CoFe₂O₄@BC. Under optimum conditions, the CoFe₂O₄@BC/PMS system could remove 89% of p-NCB from water, and the degradation efficiency could reach 80% in soil. Toxic chlorinated intermediates appeared during the degradation process and thus efficient dechlorination process can lower the toxicity of the reaction solution, which was also proved by the oxygen uptake inhibition experiment as well as zebrafish toxicity experiments. Furthermore, p-NCB degradation efficiency could be inhibited by Cl^-, HCO₃^-, HPO₄^2- and humic acid (HA) through quenching effect or occupation of CoFe₂O₄@BC surface active sites while HPO₄^2- could also improve the efficiency by directly activating PMS. The CoFe₂O₄@BC/PMS system can be efficiently applied in the remediation of p-NCB pollution in water and soil.

Insights into the polysaccharides and proteins production from Penicillium citrinum during bioleaching of spent coin cells

The essential role of polysaccharides and proteins of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) has been well known in the bioleaching process. However, there is no information on the role of these compositions in the bioleaching of spent coin cells (SCCs). This study investigated protein and polysaccharide production as biological macromolecules during the bioleaching of SCCs at various pulp densities using adapted Penicillium citrinum. The adaptation improved the tolerance index of fungi for the bioleaching up to a pulp density of 30 g/L. The EPS analysis indicated that loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) contained a high concentration of polysaccharides. Instead, the most protein content was concentrated at tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS). Both protein and polysaccharide keep growing up to 20 g/L of pulp density during the entire period of bioleaching, and the maximum binding rate of Mn and Li to EPS was 43% and 15%, respectively. Pearson correlation indicated the positive correlation of the protein and the polysaccharides content on bioleaching efficiencies. From the FTIR spectroscopy, the principal functional groups on Mn and Li binding were OH and carboxyl. The FE-SEM analysis revealed the deformation of EPS at 30 g/L of pulp density, which suggested the toxic effect of this pulp density.

Biosorption of nickel, cobalt, zinc and copper ions by Serratia marcescens strain 16 in mono and multimetallic systems

The metallurgical industry is one of the main sources of heavy metal pollution, which represents a severe threat to life. Metals can be removed from aqueous solutions by using microbial biomasses. This paper analyses the heavy metal biosorption capacity of Serratia marcescens strain 16 in single and multimetallic systems. The results obtained show that Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) biosorption in monometallic systems is two to three times higher than in the presence of bi-metallic and multimetallic solutions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that carbonyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl were the main functional groups, as well as the amide bands I and II involved in metal uptake, which are present in external structures of the bacterial cell. The results obtained demonstrated the viability of S. marcescens strain 16 as a biosorbent for the design of eco-friendly technologies for the treatment of waste liquor.

Dissolved Trace Metals and Organic Matter Distribution in the Northern Adriatic, an Increasingly Oligotrophic Shallow Sea

We report a monthly distribution of Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Co, biologically relevant trace metals (TMs), within one year, in the productive surface layer at two stations with different trophic characters in the northern Adriatic (NA). The TM data was accompanied by a multivariable dataset, including dissolved organic carbon (DOC), surface-active organic substances (SAS), nitrogen-containing polymeric organic material (N-POM), nutrients, pH, dissolved O2, chlorophyll a (Chl a), seawater temperature, and the Po River discharge rate. At the eu- to mesotrophic station 108, the concentrations of dissolved TMs were 5–116 nM for Zn, 0.04–0.18 nM for Cd, 0.05–0.63 nM for Pb, 3–17 nM for Cu, 4–11 nM for Ni, and 0.2–1.2 nM for Co, while at the oligotrophic station 107, they were 6–224 nM for Zn, 0.03–0.16 nM for Cd, 0.05–1.25 nM for Pb, 3–17 nM for Cu, 4–19 nM for Ni, and 0.1–0.7 nM for Co. The characterization of organic matter (OM) in conjunction with the analysis of correlations with TMs indicated that the OM–TMs interactions differed between the two stations; namely, the freshly produced OM detected at station 108 was probably involved in the complexation of Cu, Co, Cd, and Ni, whereas at station 107, such complexation processes were not present. Accumulation of DOC was observed during the summer months at both stations. Our results present a significant contribution to biogeochemical studies in the NA by focusing on the complexity of TM–OM interactions, which is a prerequisite for interpretation of their responses to local and global changes.

Micronutrients in Food Production: What Can We Learn from Natural Ecosystems?

Soil micronutrients limit crop productivity in many regions worldwide, and micronutrient deficiencies affect over two billion people globally. Microbial biofertilizers could combat these issues by inoculating arable soils with microorganisms that mobilize micronutrients, increasing their availability to crop plants in an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective manner. However, the widespread application of biofertilizers is limited by complex micronutrient–microbe–plant interactions, which reduce their effectiveness under field conditions. Here, we review the current state of seven micronutrients in food production. We examine the mechanisms underpinning microbial micronutrient mobilization in natural ecosystems and synthesize the state-of-knowledge to improve our overall understanding of biofertilizers in food crop production. We demonstrate that, although soil micronutrient concentrations are strongly influenced by soil conditions, land management practices can also substantially affect micronutrient availability and uptake by plants. The effectiveness of biofertilizers varies, but several lines of evidence indicate substantial benefits in co-applying biofertilizers with conventional inorganic or organic fertilizers. Studies of micronutrient cycling in natural ecosystems provide examples of microbial taxa capable of mobilizing multiple micronutrients whilst withstanding harsh environmental conditions. Research into the mechanisms of microbial nutrient mobilization in natural ecosystems could, therefore, yield effective biofertilizers to improve crop nutrition under global changes.

Revealing the mechanisms of alkali-based magnetic nanosheets enhanced hydrogen production from dark fermentation: Comparison between mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

In the present study, a dark fermentation system inoculated with mixed culture bacteria (MCB) was developed using prepared alkali-based magnetic nanosheets (AMNSs) to facilitate biohydrogen (BioH₂) production. The highest BioH₂ yields of 232.8 ± 8.5 and 150.3 ± 4.8 mL/g glucose were observed at 100 (mesophilic condition) and 400 (thermophilic condition) mg/L AMNSs groups, which were 65.4% and 43.3%, respectively, above the 0 mg/L AMNSs group. The fermentation pathway revealed that AMNSs enhanced the butyrate-type metabolic pathway and the corresponding nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides (NADHand NAD⁺) ratio, and hydrogenase activity was enhanced in mesophilic fermentation. The interaction of AMNSs and MCB suggested that AMNSs could assist in electron transfer and that the released metal elements might be responsible for elevated hydrogenase activity. AMNSs also promoted the evolution of the dominant microbial community and altered the content of extracellular polymers, leading to increased production of BioH₂.

Acute impact of Hg2+, Cu2+, and Ag+ on the formation of biopolymers and nitrogenous soluble microbiological products in activated sludge for wastewater treatment

In the present work, acute impact of heavy metals on activated sludge was investigated, specifically the release of biopolymers and nitrogenous soluble microbiological products (N-SMP) that significantly impact tertiary effluent quality. Based on the previously reported studies, Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ were selected as representative "non-essential" heavy metals, while Cu²⁺ was selected as the "essential" heavy metal. Stress tests show that under the present experimental conditions, adding a higher concentration of heavy metals to the activated sludge increases the concentration of biopolymers and SMP in the supernatant; N-SMP increased more significantly than carbonaceous products, implying a greater risk of formation of toxic nitrogenous disinfection by-products or membrane fouling in relevant tertiary treatment processes. The severity of the release of SMP into the supernatant depended on the heavy metal, with an order of Hg²⁺ > Ag⁺ > Cu²⁺ ("non-essential" > "essential") under identical molar concentrations. The mass balance of typical organics (e.g., biopolymers) in SMP and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge was analyzed, and a negative correlation between the organics in the SMP and tightly bound EPS was observed, implying that a significant fraction of the SMP could be quickly released from the tightly bound EPS under heavy metal shock conditions and could be related to cell response or damage.

Impact of commonly used Ag-Cu ion doses on Desulfovibrio sp.: growth and microbiologically induced corrosion against stainless steel

Ag-Cu ions in cooling water may inhibit the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria and therefore provide solutions to microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) problems, mainly caused by Desulfovibrio sp. To investigate this, the MIC behavior of Desulfovibrio sp. on 316L stainless steel in terms of growth and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production was investigated in the presence of Ag-Cu ions. Laboratory-scale systems were set up with final concentrations of 0.13 ppm Ag and 0.3 ppm Cu ions, as they are the frequently used doses for cooling waters, and operated over 720 hours. The corrosion rate was evaluated by gravimetric assay, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The growth of Desulfovibrio sp. was assessed by bacterial counting and EPS production. Ag-Cu ions in the biofilm were assessed by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and EDS-elemental mapping analyses. It was concluded that the ion concentrations used caused an increase in EPS production, especially of protein. The corrosion rate of the metal by Desulfovibrio sp. in the presence of ions was detected as being 29 times higher than that in the sterile medium with the ions after 720 hours. The results suggested that Desulfovibrio sp. exhibited more corrosive behavior in the presence of non-toxic concentrations of Ag-Cu ions.

Single and combined impacts of nickel and cadmium on the performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors

The performance, microbial enzymatic activities and the microbial community of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were evaluated under the single and combined nickel (Ni²⁺) at 20 mg/L and cadmium (Cd²⁺) at 10 mg/L. The single and combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺ had no adverse impacts on the COD removal, whereas the NH₄⁺-N removal efficiency declined sharply from about 99% to 34.42% and 42.67% under the single Ni²⁺ and combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺. Compared with the absence of Ni²⁺ or Cd²⁺, the specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR), ammonia-oxidizing rate (SAOR), nitrite-oxidizing rate (SNOR), nitrite-reducing rate (SNIRR) and nitrate-reducing rate (SNRR) declined by 24.09%, 56.63%, 51.50%, 58.01% and 52.09% under the combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺, which were slower than the sum of those under single Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺. The dehydrogenase, ammonia monooxygenase, nitrite oxidoreductase, nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase activities showed the similar varying trends to the SOUR, SAOR, SNOR, SNIRR and SNRR, suggesting that the combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺ displayed antagonistic inhibition on the nitrogen removal rates and microbial enzyme activities. The combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺ declined the microbial diversity and richness less than the sum of those under single Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺. The relative abundance of Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira and identified denitrifying bacteria displayed some changes under single and combined Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺. These findings would contribute to better understand the combined impacts of multiple heavy metals on biological wastewater treatment systems.

Effect of Cobalt, Cadmium and Manganese on Nitrogen Removal Capacity of Arthrobacter arilaitensis Y-10

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of a simultaneous nitrification–denitrification hypothermic bacterium for applying in Cd(II), Co(II), and Mn(II)-contaminated wastewater. The influence of Cd(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) on the inorganic nitrogen removal capacity of the hypothermia bacterium Arthrobacter arilaitensis Y-10 was determined. The experimental results demonstrated that low concentration of Cd(II) (2.5 mg/L) exhibited no significant impact on bioremediation of ammonium. The nitrate and nitrite removal activities of strain Y-10 were enhanced by 0.1 and 0.25 mg/L of Cd(II), but hindered by more than 0.25 and 0.5 mg/L of Cd(II), respectively. However, the cell growth and denitrification activity ceased immediately once Co(II) was supplemented. In terms of Mn(II), no conspicuous inhibitory impact on ammonium bioremediation was observed even if Mn(II) concentration reached as high as 30 mg/L. The bioremediation of nitrates and nitrites was significantly improved by 0.5 mg/L of Mn(II), and then dropped sharply along with the increase of Mn(II). The order of the degree of inhibitory influence of the three heavy metal ions on the nitrogen bioremediation ability of strain Y-10 was Co(II) > Cd(II) > Mn(II). All the results highlighted that the heterotrophic nitrification was less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of Cd(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) relative to aerobic denitrification.

Single and combined effects of divalent copper and hexavalent chromium on the performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactor

Divalent copper (Cu²⁺) and hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) are often encountered in industrial wastewater and municipal wastewater, the effect of combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ on biological wastewater treatment systems has cause wide concern. In the present research, the performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were compared under the single and combined Cu²⁺ at 20 mg/L and Cr⁶⁺ at 10 mg/L. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) removal efficiencies under the combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ were less than those under the single Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺. The combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ displayed more inhibition effects on the oxygen uptake rate, nitrification rate and denitrification rate of activated sludge than the single Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺. The inhibitory effects of the combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ on the activities of dehydrogenase, ammonia monooxygenase, nitrite oxidoreductase, nitrite reductase and nitrate reductase showed significant increases by comparison with the single Cr⁶⁺. However, the combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ had a little more inhibitory effects on the enzymatic activities than the single Cu²⁺. The microbial richness and diversity displayed some obvious changes under the single and combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ by comparison the absence of Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺. The relative abundances of nitrifying genera (e.g. Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) under the combined Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ was less than those under the single Cu²⁺ and Cr⁶⁺. These findings will be helpful to better understand the combined effects of multiple heavy metals on biological wastewater treatment systems.

Effects of cobalt-histidine absorbent on aerobic denitrification by Paracoccus versutus LYM

To overcome the problem that ferrous complexes are easily oxidized by O₂ and then lose NO binding ability in the chemical absorption-biological reduction (CABR) process, cobalt(II)-histidine [Co(II)His] was proposed as an alternative. To evaluate the applicability of Co(II)His, the effects of CoHis absorbent on the aerobic denitrification by Paracoccus versutus LYM were investigated. Results indicated that His significantly promoted nitrite reduction. The inhibition effects of CoHis absorbent could be substantially alleviated by increasing the initial His/Co²⁺ to 4 or higher. CoHis with concentrations of 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 mM presented no distinct effect on nitrite reduction, but slightly inhibited the reduction of nitrate, resulting in longer lag of nitrate reduction, and obviously promoted the growth of strain LYM. In the presence of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mM CoHis absorbent, the main denitrification product was N₂ (not less than 95.0%). This study is of significance in verifying the applicability of Co(II)His in the CABR process, and provides a referable CoHis absorbent concentration as 20 mM with an initial His/Co²⁺ of 4 for the future experiments.

Valorization of coal fired-fly ash for potential heavy metal removal from the single and multi-contaminated system

In this study, adsorption of three different heavy metals i.e. cadmium (Cd (II)), copper (Cu (II)) and nickel (Ni (II)) was carried out in single and multi-contaminated system using coal-fired fly ash (CFFA). Initially, for the single contaminated system, various physical process parameters were selected for optimization by deploying Box–Behnken design of experiments. Further, the evaluation of CFFA for removal of heavy metals in a multi-component system from aqueous solution was performed by employing Plackett-Burman design of experiments with all the three heavy metals at two different levels by varying their initial concentration (10–50 mg L⁻¹). In both the aforementioned cases, CFFA showed its great potential for heavy metal removal, i.e. single and multi-component system and followed the order: Cu (II) > Ni (II) > Cd (II). Further, FTIR study confirmed the involvement of amide, aldehyde, alkoxy, alkanes, and alkene groups for heavy metal adsorption by CFFA.

Insights into the effect of nickel (Ni(II)) on the performance, microbial enzymatic activity and extracellular polymeric substances of activated sludge

The performance, nitrogen removal rate, microbial enzymatic activity and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of activated sludge were assessed under nickel (Ni(II)) stress. The organic matter and NH₄⁺-N removal efficiencies were stable at less than 10 mg/L Ni(II) and subsequently decreased with the increment of Ni(II) concentration from 10 to 30 mg/L. The specific oxygen uptake rate and dehydrogenase activity kept stable at less than 5 mg/L Ni(II) and then declined at 5-30 mg/L Ni(II). Both specific ammonia-oxidizing rate (SAOR) and specific nitrite-oxidizing rate (SNOR) decreased with the increment of Ni(II) concentration. The changing trends of ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities were matched those of SAOR and SNOR, respectively. The nitrite-reducing rate and nitrate-reducing rate illustrated a similar variation tendency to the nitrite reductase activity and nitrate reductase activity, respectively. Ni(II) impacted on the production, chemical composition and functional group of EPS. The relation between the sludge volume index and the EPS production exhibited a better linear function with a negative slope, demonstrating that Ni(II) improved the sludge settleability despite of the increase of EPS production.

Acute and chronic toxicity of nickel to nitrifiers at different temperatures

This study investigated the acute nickel toxicity on nitrification of low ammonia synthetic wastewater at 10, 23, and 35°C. The nickel inhibition half-velocity constants (K_I,Ni) for ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) based on Ni/MLSS ratio at 10, 23, and 35°C were 5.4 and 5.6 mg Ni/g MLSS, 4.6 and 3.5 mg Ni/g MLSS, and 9.1 and 2.7 mg Ni/g MLSS, respectively. In addition, chronic toxicity of nickel to nitrification of low ammonia synthetic wastewater was investigated at 10°C in two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Long-term SBRs operation and short-term batch tests were comparable with respect to the extent of inhibition and corresponding Ni/MLSS ratio. The μ_max, b, and K_o of AOB were 0.16 day^-1, 0.098 day^-1 and 2.08 mg O₂/L after long-term acclimatization to nickel of 1 mg/L at 10°C, high dissolved oxygen (DO) (7 mg/L) and long solids retention time (SRT) of 63-70 days. Acute nickel toxicity of nitrifying bacteria was completely reversible.

Long-term impact of heavy metals on the performance of biological wastewater treatment processes during shock-adaptation-restoration phases

The present work investigated the long-term (30 days of shock-adaptation and 60 days of restoration) impact of Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ shock loading on the performance of biological wastewater treatment processes. Under the same inhibitory concentration (IC₁₅), Cu²⁺ had the most significant impact on the treatment efficiency. During the shock-adaptation phase, Ag⁺ led to up to 4 times of biopolymers generation compared to that of the blank one; Hg²⁺ inhibited the nitrification process but showed little influence on other parameters; Cu²⁺ and Ag⁺ inhibited the activity of sDHA completely and decreased the content of ATP significantly, as well they caused abnormal ROS generation and corresponding CAT and SOD increment. Till 60 days of restoration can the activity of enzymes be restored to the control level, which agreed well with the results of effluent quality. Cu²⁺ decreased the biodiversity of the sludge to a large extent, followed by Ag⁺ and Hg²⁺. At the phylum level, Verrucomicrobia was decreased nearly to zero after 30 days of Cu²⁺ shock. At the genera level, Zoogloea was almost vanished after 15 days of Cu²⁺ shock.

Remediation of Potential Toxic Elements from Wastes and Soils: Analysis and Energy Prospects

The aim of this study is to evaluate the application of the main hazardous waste management techniques in mining operations and in dumping sites being conscious of the inter-linkages and inter-compartment of the contaminated soils and sediments. For this purpose, a systematic review of the literature on the reduction or elimination of different potential toxic elements was carried out, focusing on As, Cd and Hg as main current contaminant agents. Selected techniques are feasible according to several European countries’ directives, especially in Spain. In the case of arsenic, we verified that there exists a main line that is based on the use of iron minerals and its derivatives. It is important to determine its speciation since As (III) is more toxic and mobile than As (V). For cadmium (II), we observed a certain predominance of the use of biotic techniques, compared to a variety of others. Finally, in mercury case, treatments include a phytoremediation technique using Limnocharis flava and the use of a new natural adsorbent: a modified nanobiocomposite hydrogel. The use of biological treatments is increasingly being studied because they are environmentally friendly, efficient and highly viable in both process and energy terms. The study of techniques for the removal of potential toxic elements should be performed with a focus on the simultaneous removal of several metals, since in nature they do not appear in isolation. Moreover, we found that energy analysis constitutes a limiting factor in relation to the feasibility of these techniques.

Responses of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans A01 to Individual and Joint Nickel (Ni2+) and Ferric (Fe3+)

Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans A01 is widely used in bioleaching processes and commonly thrives in most metal-rich environments. However, interactions between different heavy metals remain obscure. In this study, we elaborated the effect of ferric iron on the growth and gene expression of At. thiooxidans A01 under the stress of nickel. The results showed that 600 mM Ni2+ completely inhibited the growth and sulfur metabolism of At. thiooxidans A01. However, trace amounts of Fe3+ (0.5 mM) facilitated the growth of At. thiooxidans A01 in the presence of 600 mM Ni2+. With the addition of 5 mM Fe3+, the maximum cell density reached 1.84 × 108 cell/mL, and pH value was 0.95. In addition, metal resistance-related and sulfur metabolism genes were significantly up regulated with extra ferric iron. Taking the whole process into account, the promoting effect of Fe3+ addition can be attributed to the following: (1) alleviation of the effects of Ni2+ toxicity and restoring the growth of At. thiooxidans A01, (2) a choice of multiple pathways to export nickel ion and producing precursor of chelators of heavy metals. This can suggest that microorganisms may widely exhibit metabolic activity in iron-rich environments with heavy metals. Our study will facilitate the technique development for the processing of ore bodies with highly challenging ore compositions.

Soil Enzymatic Activities as Influenced by Lead and Nickel Concentrations in a Vertisol of Central India

A pot-culture was conducted in Completely Randomized Design with three replicates to study the effect of Pb and Ni on enzymatic activities in a Vertisols. Results indicated that increasing in the levels of Pb from 0, 100, 150 and 300 mg kg^-1 soil significantly reduced the dehydrogenase activity (DHA) 38.9, 32.1, 30.9, 18.1 µg triphenylformazan g^-1 soil 24 h^-1; acid phosphatase activities 73, 61, 58, 55 µg PNP g^-1 soil h^-1 and alkaline phosphatase activities 80.7, 69.4, 66.2 and 64.0 µg PNP g^-1 soil h^-1, respectively. Application of Ni up to 100 mg kg^-1 had significantly improved the soil enzymatic activities and thereafter there was no such change up to the highest level (300 mg Ni kg^-1). Among soil enzymatic activities, DHA was more sensitive to Pb application. The findings generated through this study can be useful for managing waste water for safe disposal as well as sustainable crop production.

Effect of Cu, Ni and Zn on Fe(II)-driven autotrophic denitrification

Fe(II)-mediated autotrophic denitrification in the presence of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) with four different microbial cultures was investigated in batch bioassays. In the absence of metals, complete nitrate removal and Fe(II) oxidation were achieved with a Thiobacillus-dominated mixed culture and Pseudogulbenkiania sp. 2002 after 7 d. A nitrate removal of 96 and 91% was observed with a pure culture of T. denitrificans and an activated sludge enrichment, respectively, after 10 d of incubation. Cu, Ni and Zn were then supplemented at an initial concentration of 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg Me/L. A decrease of approximately 50% of the soluble metal concentrations occurred in the first 4 d of denitrification, due to metal precipitation, co-precipitation, sorption onto iron (hydr)oxides, and probably sorption onto biomass. A higher sensitivity to metal toxicity was observed for the microbial pure cultures. Pseudogulbenkiania sp. 2002 was the least tolerant among the biomasses tested, resulting in only 6, 8 and 6% nitrate removal for the highest Cu, Ni and Zn concentrations, respectively. In contrast, the highest nitrate removal efficiency and specific rates were achieved with the Thiobacillus-dominated mixed culture, which better tolerated the presence of metals. Averagely, Cu resulted in the highest inhibition of nitrate removal, followed by Zn and Ni.

Linkage between human population and trace elements in soils of the Pearl River Delta: Implications for source identification and risk assessment

The human population is both an emitter and receptor of metals. This study aims to clarify how the relationship of metals and metalloids to human populations influences their source characterization and health risk, based on metal concentrations in 298 soil samples in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and the corresponding zip-code level population. Nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb), but not chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As), were significantly correlated with population (p<0.01), suggesting potential anthropogenic sources. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed three factors (i.e., F1, F2, and F3) contributing to metal levels in the PRD: (1) metal transport from rivers (F1), which explained the high levels of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Cd in downstream areas; (2) industrial sources (F2), mainly contributing to Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb; and (3) natural and agricultural sources (F3), mainly contributing to As and Pb. F2 was significantly correlated with population, while F3 was not, indicating that an analysis of the correlation with population could be used to identify industrial sources of metals. Compared with directly calculated risks, the population-weighted non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were increased by 4.2-4.9% and 7.7-9.2%, respectively. A unit increase in the concentration of industrial metals led to higher extra risks than a corresponding increase in natural metals due to the proximity to human populations.

Effects of different nickel species on autotrophic denitrification driven by thiosulfate in batch tests and a fluidized-bed reactor

Nickel is a common heavy metal and often occurs with nitrate (NO₃^-) in effluents from mining and metal-finishing industry. The present study investigates the effects of increasing concentrations (5-200mgNi/L) of NiEDTA^2- and NiCl₂ on autotrophic denitrification with thiosulfate (S₂O₃^2-) in batch tests and a fluidized-bed reactor (FBR). In batch bioassays, 50 and 100mgNi/L of NiEDTA^2- only increased the transient accumulation of NO₂^-, whereas 25-100mgNi/L of NiCl₂ inhibited denitrification by 9-19%. NO₃^- and NO₂^- were completely removed in the FBR at feed NiEDTA^2- and NiCl₂ concentrations as high as 100 and 200mgNi/L, respectively. PCR-DGGE revealed the dominance of Thiobacillus denitrificans and the presence of the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio putealis in the FBR microbial community at all feed nickel concentrations investigated. Nickel mass balance, thermodynamic modeling and solid phase characterization indicated that nickel sulfide, phosphate and oxide precipitated in the FBR during NiCl₂ injection.

Role of Micronutrients on Dyeing Wastewater Treatment in Activated Sludge Process

  Adequate individual supplements of Zn, Co and Mo increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and specific oxygen uptake rates during activated sludge treatment of dyeing wastewater, while overdoses of micronutrients can decrease metabolic rates. The effects of combing Zn, Co, and Mo at different doses were investigated using response surface methodology, with a second order polynomial equation: Y = 78.19+ 0.17X1 + 37.33 X2 + 20.20X3 - 5.58X1X2 - 63.05 X2X3, where Y means COD removal rate (%), X1 means Co concentration, X2 means Zn concentration, X3 means Mo concentration. The maximum COD removal efficiency of 89.41% was achieved with doses of 0.02 mg/L Co, 0.24 mg/L Zn and 0.45 mg/L Mo. Both the combinations of Zn-Co and Zn-Mo acted antagonistically for COD removal efficiency, and the combination of Co-Mo was negligible to COD removal efficiency. Doses of micronutrients, particularly Zn, Co and Mo, were beneficial for microbial shift towards Planctomyces and Bacteroidetes.

Effect of nickel on the flocculability, settleability, and dewaterability of activated sludge

Short-term and long-term effects of nickel (Ni) (0.1-10mg/L) on the physicochemical properties of activated sludge, including the flocculability, settleability, and dewaterability, were investigated. It was found that these properties were unaffected after short-term exposure (1day) to Ni(II) even at the level of 10mg/L. After long-term exposure (60days) to 1 and 10mg/L of Ni(II), however, the sludge flocculability has seriously deteriorated, while the settleability, and dewaterability became gradually better than the control. The mechanism studies revealed that long-term exposure to Ni(II) resulted in the decrease of protein content in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the damage to EPS structures. Although Ni(II) did not bring any adverse effect on the cell membrane, the relative hydrophobicity of activated sludge was significantly decreased. The negative effects on the flocculability and phosphorus removal performance of activated sludge could be completely eliminated by adding the chelator such as EDTA and citrate.

Genome Sequence of Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae MB373, an Effective Bioremediator

Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae MB373 was isolated from effluent of the Hattar Industrial Estate, Haripur, Pakistan. K. quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae has few cultivated/characterized members so far. Whole-genome sequencing revealed its potential for metal and toxin resistance, which further elucidated various enzymatic processes for the degradation of xenobiotics, illuminating its bioremediation applications.

Adaptively Evolving Bacterial Communities for Complete and Selective Reduction of Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Cd(II) in Biocathode Bioelectrochemical Systems

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been shown to be useful in removing individual metals from solutions, but effective treatment of electroplating and mining wastewaters requires simultaneous removal of several metals in a single system. To develop multiple-reactor BESs for metals removal, biocathodes were first individually acclimated to three different metals using microbial fuel cells with Cr(VI) or Cu(II) as these metals have relatively high redox potentials, and microbial electrolysis cells for reducing Cd(II) as this metal has a more negative redox potential. The BESs were then acclimated to low concentrations of a mixture of metals, followed by more elevated concentrations. This procedure resulted in complete and selective metal reduction at rates of 1.24 ± 0.01 mg/L-h for Cr(VI), 1.07 ± 0.01 mg/L-h for Cu(II), and 0.98 ± 0.01 mg/L-h for Cd(II). These reduction rates were larger than the no adaptive controls by factors of 2.5 for Cr(VI), 2.9 for Cu(II), and 3.6 for Cd(II). This adaptive procedure produced less diverse microbial communities and changes in the microbial communities at the phylum and genus levels. These results demonstrated that bacterial communities can adaptively evolve to utilize solutions containing mixtures of metals, providing a strategy for remediating wastewaters containing Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Cd(II).

A potential application of sludge-based catalysts for the anaerobic bio-decolorization of tartrazine dye

Two highly efficient (K2CO3/sludge carbon and ZnCl2/sludge carbon) solids were prepared by chemical addition following carbonization at 800 °C and were tested for anaerobic reduction of tartrazine dye in a continuous upflow packed-bed biological reactor, and their performance was compared to that of commercial activated carbon (CAC). The chemical and structural information of the solids was subjected to various characterizations in order to understand the mechanism for anaerobic decolorization, and efficiency for SBCZN800 and SBCPC800 materials was 87% and 74%, respectively, at a short space time (τ) of 2.0 min. A first-order kinetic model fitted the experimental points and kinetic constants of 0.40, 0.92 and 1.46 min(-1) were obtained for SBCZN800, SBCPC800 and CAC, respectively. The experimental results revealed that performance of solids in the anaerobic reduction of tartrazine dye can depend on several factors including chemical agents, carbonization, microbial population, chemical groups and surface chemistry. The Langmuir and Freundlich models are successfully described in the batch adsorption data. Based on these observations, a cost-effective sludge-based catalyst can be produced from harmful sewage sludge for the treatment of industrial effluents.

Fluidized-bed denitrification of mining water tolerates high nickel concentrations

This study revealed that fluidized-bed denitrifying cultures tolerated soluble Ni concentrations up to 500 mg/L at 7-8 and 22°C. From 10 to 40 mg/L of feed Ni, denitrification resulted in complete nitrate and nitrite removal. The concomitant reduction of 30 mg/L of sulfate produced 10 mg/L of sulfide that precipitated nickel, resulting in soluble effluent Ni below 22 mg/L. At this stage, Dechloromonas species were the dominant denitrifying bacteria. From 60 to 500 mg/L of feed Ni, nickel remained in solution due to the inhibition of sulfate reduction. At soluble 60 mg/L of Ni, denitrification was partially inhibited prior to recover after 34 days of enrichment by other Ni-tolerant species (including Delftia, Zoogloea and Azospira) that supported Dechloromonas. Subsequently, the FBR cultures completely removed nitrate even at 500 mg/L of Ni. Visual Minteq speciation model predicted the formation of NiS, NiCO3 and Ni3(PO4)2, whilst only Ni3(PO4)2 was detected by XRD.

Cu(II), Fe(III) and Mn(II) combinations as environmental stress factors have distinguishing effects on Enterococcus hirae

Pollution by various heavy metals as environmental stress factors might affect bacteria. It was established that iron (Fe(III)), manganese (Mn(II)) and copper (Cu(II)) ion combinations caused effects on Enterococcus hirae that differed from the sum of the effects when the metals were added separately. It was shown that the Cu2+-Fe3+ combination decreased the growth and ATPase activity of membrane vesicles of wild-type E. hirae ATCC9790 and atpD mutant (with defective FoF1-ATPase) MS116. Addition of Mn2+-Fe3+ combinations within the same concentration range had no effects on growth compared to control (without heavy metals). ATPase activity was increased in the presence of Mn2+-Fe3+, while together with 0.2 mmol/L N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD), ATPase activity was decreased compared to control (when only 0.2 mmol/L DCCD was present). These results indicate that heavy metals ion combinations probably affect the FOF1-ATPase, leading to conformational changes. Moreover the action may be direct or be mediated by environment redox potential. The effects observed when Fe3+ was added separately disappeared in both cases, which might be a result of competing processes between Fe3+ and other heavy metals. These findings are novel and improve the understanding of heavy metals ions effects on bacteria, and could be applied for regulation of stress response patterns in the environment.

Toxic influence of silver and uranium salts on activated sludge of wastewater treatment plants and synthetic activated sludge associates modeled on its pure cultures

Toxic impact of silver and uranium salts on activated sludge of wastewater treatment facilities has been studied. Some dominating cultures (an active nitrogen fixer Agrobacterium tumifaciens (A.t) and micromyces such as Fusarium nivale, Fusarium oxysporum, and Penicillium glabrum) have been isolated and identified as a result of selection of the activated sludge microorganisms being steadiest under stressful conditions. For these cultures, the lethal doses of silver amounted 1, 600, 50, and 300 µg/l and the lethal doses of uranium were 120, 1,500, 1,000, and 1,000 mg/l, respectively. A.tumifaciens is shown to be more sensitive to heavy metals than micromyces. Synthetic granular activated sludge was formed on the basis of three cultures of the isolated micromyces steadiest against stress. Its granules were much more resistant to silver than the whole native activated sludge was. The concentration of silver causing 50 % inhibition of synthetic granular activated sludge growth reached 160-170 μg/l as far as for the native activated sludge it came only to 100-110 μg/l.

Effect of nickel on nutrient removal by selected indigenous protozoan species in wastewater systems

Nutrient and heavy metal pollutions are major concern worldwide. This study aimed at comparing the effect of Ni(2+) on nutrient removal efficiency of four indigenous wastewater protozoan species (Aspidisca sp., Paramecium sp., Peranema sp., Trachelophyllum sp.). Specific physicochemical parameters and microbial growth/die-off were measured using standard methods. The results revealed that protozoan species were able to simultaneously remove phosphate, nitrate and Ni(2+) at concentrations ranging between 66.4-99.36%, 56.19-99.88% and 45.98-85.69%, respectively. Peranema sp. appeared to be the isolates with the highest removal of nutrients (Phosphate-99.36% and Nitrate-99.88%) while Paramecium sp. showed higher removal of Ni(2+) at 85.69% and low removal of nutrients. Aspidisca sp. was the most sensitive isolate to Ni(2+) but with significant nutrient removal (Phosphate-66.4% and Nitrate-56.19%) at 10 mg-N(2+)/L followed by an inhibition of nutrient removal at Ni(2+) concentration greater than 10 mg/L. Significant correlation between the growth rate and nutrient removal (r = 0.806/0.799, p < 0.05 for phosphate and nitrate, respectively) was noted. Except for Peranema sp. which revealed better nutrient removal ability at 10 mg-Ni(2+)/L, an increase in Ni(2+) concentration had a significant effect on nutrient removal efficiency of these indigenous protozoan species. This study suggests that although Ni(2+) appeared to be toxic to microbial isolates, its effect at a low concentration (10 mg-Ni(2+)/L) towards these isolates can be used to enhance the wastewater treatment process for the removal of nutrients. Peranema sp., which was able to remove both Ni(2+) and nutrients from wastewater mixed-liquor, can also be used for bioremediation of wastewater systems.

Accumulation and fraction distribution of Ni(II) in activated sludge treating Ni-laden wastewater

The accumulation and fraction distribution of Ni(II) in sludge was determined, and their effect on the performance of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems was evaluated at laboratory scale. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of substrates decreased significantly with increasing feeding concentration of Ni(II) into SBRs. The concentration of Ni(II) fed into the SBRs was significantly positively correlated with the Ni(II) contents accumulated in the sludge, while it was negatively correlated with the biomass in the SBRs. The accumulated Ni(II) in the sludge was distributed mainly in the available fraction, accounting for 75.8-90.0 % of the total Ni(II) content. The accumulated content of Ni(II) in each sludge fraction could be predicted satisfactorily by the feeding Ni(II) concentrations in the solutions. As compared with the total contents and other chemical fractions, Ni(II) in the oxidizable fraction in sludge exhibited more important inhibition effects on sludge microorganisms in the SBRs.

Integrating algaculture into small wastewater treatment plants: process flow options and life cycle impacts

Algaculture has the potential to be a sustainable option for nutrient removal at wastewater treatment plants. The purpose of this study was to compare the environmental impacts of three likely algaculture integration strategies to a conventional nutrient removal strategy. Process modeling was used to determine life cycle inventory data and a comparative life cycle assessment was used to determine environmental impacts. Treatment scenarios included a base case treatment plant without nutrient removal, a plant with conventional nutrient removal, and three other cases with algal unit processes placed at the head of the plant, in a side stream, and at the end of the plant, respectively. Impact categories included eutrophication, global warming, ecotoxicity, and primary energy demand. Integrating algaculture prior to activated sludge proved to be most beneficial of the scenarios considered for all impact categories; however, this scenario would also require primary sedimentation and impacts of that unit process should be considered for implementation of such a system.
