A combination of electro-enzymatic catalysis and electrocoagulation for the removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals from water

Simultaneous removal of calcium, phosphorus, and bisphenol A from industrial wastewater by Stutzerimonas sp. ZW5 via microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP): Kinetics, mechanism, and stress response

The biological treatment of complex industrial wastewater has always been a research hotspot. In this experiment, a salt-tolerant strain Stutzerimonas sp. ZW5 with aerobic denitrification and biomineralization ability was screened, and the optimum conditions of ZW5 were explored by kinetics. The removal efficiencies of nitrate (NO3--N), bisphenol A (BPA), phosphorus (PO43--P), and calcium (Ca2+) were 94.47 %, 100 %, 98.87 %, and 83.04 %, respectively. The removal mechanism of BPA was the adsorption of microbial induced calcium precipitation (MICP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Moreover, BPA could weaken the electron transfer ability and growth metabolism of microorganisms and affect the structure of biominerals. At the same time, the stress response of microorganisms would increase the secretion of EPS to promote the process of biomineralization. Through nitrogen balance experiments, it was found that the addition of BPA would lead to a decrease in the proportion of gaseous nitrogen. This experiment offers novel perspectives on the treatment of industrial effluents and microbial stress response.

Enhanced methane production from waste activated sludge by microbial electrolysis cell assisted anaerobic digestion: Fate and effect of humic substances

Humic substances as major components of waste activated sludge are refractory to degrade and have inhibition in traditional anaerobic digestion (AD). This study for the first time investigated the feasibility and mechanism of microbial electrolysis cell assisted anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) to break the recalcitrance and inhibition of humic substances. The cumulative methane production of AD decreased from 134.7 to 117.6 mL/g-VS with the addition of humic acids and fulvic acids at 25.2-102.1 mg/g-VS. However, 0.6 V MEC-AD maintained stable methane production (155.5-158.2 mL/g-VS) under the effect of humic substances. 0.6 V MEC-AD formed electrical stimulation on microbial cells, provided anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction transformation pathways for humic substances (acting as carbon sources and electron shuttles), and aggregated functional microorganisms on electrodes, facilitating the degradation of humic substances and generation of methane. This study provides a theoretical basis for improving the energy recovery and system stability of sludge treatment.

A review of hybrid enzymatic-chemical treatment for wastewater containing antiepileptic drugs

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide and requires treatment with antiepileptic drugs for many years or for life. This fact leads to the need for constant production and use of these compounds, placing them among the four pharmaceutical classes most found in wastewater. Even at low concentrations, antiepileptics pose risks to human and environmental health and are considered organic contaminants of emerging concern. Conventional treatments have shown low removal of these drugs, requiring advanced and innovative approaches. In this context, this review covers the results and perspectives on (1) consumption and occurrence of antiepileptics in water, (2) toxicological effects in aquatic ecosystems, (3) enzymatic and advanced oxidation processes for degrading antiepileptics drugs from a molecular point of view (biochemical and chemical phenomena), (4) improvements in treatment efficiency by hybridization, and (5) technical aspects of the enzymatic-AOP reactors.

Horseradish Peroxidase-Coupled Ag3 PO4 /BiVO4 Photoanode for Biophotoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Organic Contaminants

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) is regarded as a promising and sustainable process for removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. Meanwhile, enzymatic catalysis also provides an effective way to carry out polluted environment remediation under mild conditions. In this study, a biophotoelectrocatalytic (BPEC) system is designed to remove 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) based on a combination of PEC and enzymatic catalysis. The developed BPEC system is constructed with a Ag₃ PO₄ /BiVO₄ photoanode and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-loaded carbon cloth (CC) cathode. On the photoanode, the construction of a direct Z-scheme Ag₃ PO₄ /BiVO₄ heterojunction enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which promoted the PEC degradation of 4-NP under visible light irradiation. After HRP was immobilized on the cathode, the degradation efficiency of 4-NP reached 97.1 % after 60 min PEC treatment. The result could be ascribed to the HRP-catalyzed oxidation reaction via in situ-generated H₂ O₂ from the CC cathode during the PEC process. Moreover, the possible degradation pathways of 4-NP in such a BPEC system are also discussed.

Lignocellulosic biomass valorization via bio-photo/electro hybrid catalytic systems

Lignocellulosic biomass valorization is regarded as a promising approach to alleviate energy crisis and achieve carbon neutrality. Bioactive enzymes have attracted great attention and been commonly applied for biomass valorization owing to their high selectivity and catalytic efficiency under environmentally benign reaction conditions. Same as biocatalysis, photo-/electro-catalysis also happens at mild conditions (i.e., near ambient temperature and pressure). Therefore, the combination of these different catalytic approaches to benefit from their resulting synergy is appealing. In such hybrid systems, harness of renewable energy from the photo-/electro-catalytic compartment can be combined with the unique selectivity of biocatalysts, therefore providing a more sustainable and greener approach to obtain fuels and value-added chemicals from biomass. In this review, we firstly introduce the pros/cons, classifications, and the applications of photo-/electro-enzyme coupled systems. Then we focus on the fundamentals and comprehensive applications of the most representative biomass-active enzymes including lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), glucose oxidase (GOD)/dehydrogenase (GDH) and lignin peroxidase (LiP), together with other biomass-active enzymes in the photo-/electro- enzyme coupled systems. Finally, we propose current deficiencies and future perspectives of biomass-active enzymes to be applied in the hybrid catalytic systems for global biomass valorization.

Bioremoval of estrogens by laccase immobilized onto polyacrylonitrile/polyethersulfone material: Effect of inhibitors and mediators, process characterization and catalytic pathways determination

The presence of micropollutants in water, wastewater and soil are a global problem due to their persistent effect on ecosystems and human health. Although there are many methods of removal of environmental pollutants, they are often ineffective for degradation of pharmaceuticals, including estrogens. In presented work we proposed fabrication of electrospun material from polyacrylonitrile/polyethersulfone (PAN/PES) as a support for laccase immobilization by covalent binding. Oxidoreductase was attached to the electrospun fibers using polydopamine as a linker and produced system was used for degradation of two estrogens: 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2). It was shown that 92% of E2 and 100% of EE2 were degraded after 24 h of the process. Moreover, the effect of surfactants, metal ions and mediators on conversion efficiencies of estrogens was investigated and it was confirmed that immobilized enzyme possessed higher resistance to inhibitory agents as well as thermal and storage stability, compared to its native form. Finally, estrogenic activities of E2 and EE2 solutions decreased around 99% and 87%, respectively, after enzymatic conversion, that corresponds to significant reduction of the total organic carbon and formation of low-toxic final products of estrogens degradation.

A review on electrocoagulation process for the removal of emerging contaminants: theory, fundamentals, and applications

Electrocoagulation (EC) is an excellent and promising technology in wastewater treatment, as it combines the benefits of coagulation, flotation, and electrochemistry. During the last decade, extensive researches have focused on removal of emerging contaminants by using electrocoagualtion, due to its several advantages like compactness, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, low sludge production, and eco-friendness. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are micropollutants found in trace amounts that discharging into conventional wastewater treatment (WWT) plants entering surface waters and imposing a high threat to human and aquatic life. Various studies reveal that about 90% of emerging contaminants are disposed unscientifically into water bodies, creating problems to public health and environment. The studies on removal of emerging contaminants from wastewater are by global researchers are critically reviewed. The core findings proved that still more research required into optimization of parameters, system design, and economic feasibility to explore the potential of EC combined systems. This review has introduced an innovative collection of current knowledge on electro-coagulation for the removal of emerging contaminants.

An integrated electrocoagulation - Electrocatalysis water treatment process using stainless steel cathodes coated with ultrathin TiO2 nanofilms

Anodic electrocoagulation processes can remove broad varieties of pollutants in industrial wastewater. However, some stubborn contaminants may still remain in effluents after the treatment and cause environmental issues. To further improve the efficiency of pollutant removal, we have coupled electrocatalysis with electrocoagulation and applied an atomic layer deposition (ALD) enabled TiO₂ ultrathin overcoating at a nanometer scale on a stainless steel cathode. The electrocatalytic overcoating increased the elimination efficiency of organics and microorganisms, likely due to the electro-generation of adequate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The thickness of TiO₂ nanofilm was controlled by the number of ALD cycles, and it was found that nanofilms processed with 50-100 cycles led to the maximum benefit of pollutant removal. By using the novel electrocoagulation-electrocatalysis cell to treat synthetic wastewater, a remarkable removal of 99.92% of E. Coli, 92.1% of suspended solids, 98.3% of heavy metal ions, and 88.8% of methylene blue was observed. This hybrid electrochemical treatment process may have the potential to treat wastewater at a larger scale.

MnO2 nanozyme-driven polymerization and decomposition mechanisms of 17β-estradiol: Influence of humic acid

Nanozymes, which display the bifunctional properties of nanomaterials and natural enzymes, are useful tools for environmental remediation. In this research, nano-MnO₂ was selected for its intrinsic enzyme-like activity to remove 17β-estradiol (E2). Results indicated that nano-MnO₂ exhibited laccase-like activity (7.22 U·mg^-1) and removed 97.3 % of E2 at pH 6. Humic acid (HA) impeded E2 removal (only 72.4 %) by competing with E2 for the catalytic sites of the MnO₂ nanozyme surface, and there was a good linear correlation between the kinetic constants and HA concentrations (R² = 0.9489). Notably, the phenolic -OH of E2 interacted with HA to yield various polymeric products via radical-driven covalent coupling, resulting in ablation of phenolic -OH but increase of ether groups in the polymeric structure. Intermediate products, including estrone, E2 homo-/hetero-oligomers, E2 hydroxylated and quinone-like products, as well as aromatic ring-opening species, were identified. Interestingly, HA hindered the extent of E2 oxidation, homo-coupling, and decomposition but accelerated E2 and HA hetero-coupling. A reasonable catalytic pathway of E2 and HA involving MnO₂ nanozyme was proposed. These findings provide novel insights into the influence of HA on MnO₂ nanozyme-driven E2 radical polymerization and decomposition, consequently favoring the ecological water restoration and the global carbon cycle.

Comparison of organic matter removals in single-component and bi-component systems using enhanced coagulation and magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) adsorption

Natural organic matter (NOM) in aquatic environments have a significant impact on NOM-organic compound interactions, which could strongly affect the distribution and transformation of organic compounds during water treatment. This study focused on the removals of NOM (humic acid, HA) and synthetic organic matter (ibuprofen, IBP) through enhanced coagulation and magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin adsorption in single and bi-component systems. Two coagulants, traditional aluminum sulfate (AS) and lab-prepared polyaluminum chloride (PACl), were employed. The charge properties, particle size distribution, and fractal dimension (D_f) during organic matter removal were studied in both the single and bi-component systems to explore the purification behaviors and mechanistic effects of interactions between coagulants, MIEX, and organic matters. The experimental results indicated that the Al-based coagulants could remove over 80% of HA in both the single and IBP-HA combined systems, while the presence of HA could considerably improve the IBP removal rate. The aggregates formed during single-component coagulation were larger, but weaker and more loosely structured than those formed in the bi-component system under the same coagulation conditions. In the single-component system, the maximum removal efficiencies of IBP and HA by MIEX adsorption were 65% and 72%, respectively, at a resin dosage of 20.0 mL/L and mixing time of 60 min. Under the same conditions, the removals of these components in the bi-component system were improved to 68% and 98%, respectively. The reaction rate between IBP and MIEX resin was found faster than that between HA and MIEX resin.

Ligninolytic enzymes: Versatile biocatalysts for the elimination of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in wastewater

Direct municipal wastewater effluent discharge from treatment plants has been identified as the major source of endocrine‐disrupting chemicals (EDC) in freshwaters. Consequently, efficient elimination of EDC in wastewater is significant to good water quality. However, conventional wastewater treatment approaches have been deficient in the complete removal of these contaminants. Hence, the exploration of new and more efficient methods for elimination of EDC in wastewater is imperative. Enzymatic treatment approach has been suggested as a suitable option. Nonetheless, ligninolytic enzymes seem to be the most promising group of enzymes for EDC elimination, perhaps, owing to their unique catalytic properties and characteristic high redox potentials for oxidation of a wide spectrum of organic compounds. Therefore, this paper discusses the potential of some ligninolytic enzymes (laccase, manganese peroxidase, and versatile peroxidase) in the elimination of EDC in wastewater and proposes a new scheme of wastewater treatment process for EDC removal.

Fate and Transport Modelling of Emerging Pollutants from Watersheds to Oceans: A Review

This chapter provides a review of the fate and transport modelling of emerging pollutants (EPs) and discusses the major research challenges. The overwhelming limitation of the past modelling studies has been the lack of data necessary for model validation, thus calling for large-scale field data sampling. The identification and understanding of fate and transport processes and their interactions of the target EPs and the corresponding selection of appropriate parameter values were also challenging. Such limitations and challenges were evidenced by the elaboration of the representative models in the field. The review also reveales that the model parameter values varied significantly with the EPs (and chemical compositions) and media of concerns. Sensitivity analysis was found to be necessary for modelling of those EPs with limited references in the literature. In comparison with traditional water pollutants, the concentrations of many EPs in water bodies are usually low and even at a trace level, leading to uncertainties or inaccuracy in measured data. This could further challenge model calibration and validation, and especially the determination of parameter values when lacking sufficient data support. How to improve the existing models to address such an issue special for EPs is an urgent task for researchers to ensure the accuracy and reliability of modelling results.

Highly Efficient Interception and Precipitation of Uranium(VI) from Aqueous Solution by Iron-Electrocoagulation Combined with Cooperative Chelation by Organic Ligands

A new strategy combining iron-electrocoagulation and organic ligands (OGLs) cooperative chelation was proposed to screen and precipitate low concentrations (0-18.52 μmol/L) of uranium contaminant in aqueous solution. We hypothesized that OGLs with amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups hydrophobically/hydrophilically would realize precuring of uranyl ion at pH < 3.0, and the following iron-electrocoagulation would achieve faster and more efficient uranium precipitation. Experimentally, the strategy demonstrated highly efficient uranium(VI) precipitation efficiency, especially with hydrophilic macromolecular OGLs. The uranium removal efficiency at optimized experimental condition reached 99.65%. The decrease of zeta potential and the lattice enwrapping between U-OGLs chelates and flocculation precursor were ascribed to the enhanced uranium precipitation activity. Uranium was precipitated as oxides of U(VI) or higher valences that were easily captured in aggregated micelles under low operation current potential. The actual uranium tailing wastewater was treated, and a satisfied uranium removal efficiency of 99.02% was discovered. After elution of the precipitated flocs, a concentrated uranium solution (up to 106.52 μmol/L) with very few other metallic impurities was obtained. Therefore, the proposed strategy could remove uranium and concentrate it concurrently. This work could provide new insights into the purification and recovery of uranium from aqueous solutions in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process.

Lessons learned from more than two decades of research on emerging contaminants in the environment

In the last twenty years, thousands of research papers covering different aspects of emerging contaminants have been published, ranging from environmental occurrence to treatment and ecological effects. Emerging contaminants are environmental pollutants that have been investigated widely only in the last two decades and include anthropogenic and naturally occurring chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products and their metabolites, illicit drugs, engineered nanomaterials, and antibiotic resistance genes. The advancement in our knowledge on emerging contaminants has been the result of the appearance of highly sensitive and powerful analytical instrumentation that rapidly developed, allowing identification and trace quantification of unknown contaminants in complex environmental matrices. High efficiency chromatographic separations coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometers have become more common in environmental laboratories and are the pillars of environmental research, increasing our awareness and understanding of the presence of emerging contaminants in the environment, their transformation and fate, and the complex ecological consequences that they pose on exposed biological systems. This introductory paper for the Virtual Thematic Issue on Emerging Contaminants presents a brief literature overview on key research milestones in the area of emerging contaminants, focusing on pharmaceuticals and personal care products and endocrine disrupting compounds, and highlighting selected research papers previously published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials during the period of January 2012 to December 2015.

Cobalt-doped graphitic carbon nitride with enhanced peroxidase-like activity for wastewater treatment

The peroxidase-like activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is dramatically increased by a small cobalt doping. The cobalt-doped g-C₃N₄ was used for wastewater treatment, exhibiting much higher degradation rate than that of pure g-C₃N₄.
