Facile one-pot synthesis of thiol-functionalized mesoporous silica submicrospheres for Tl(I) adsorption: Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Upgrading recovered carbon black (rCB) from industrial-scale end-of-life tires (ELTs) pyrolysis to activated carbons: Material characterization and CO2 capture abilities

The current study presents for the first time how recovered carbon black (rCB) obtained directly from the industrial-scale end-of-life tires (ELTs) pyrolysis sector is applied as a precursor for activated carbons (ACs) with application in CO2 capture. The rCB shows better physical characteristics, including density and carbon structure, as well as chemical properties, such as a consistent composition and low impurity concentration, in comparison to the pyrolytic char. Potassium hydroxide and air in combination with heat treatment (500-900 °C) were applied as agents for the conventional chemical and physical activation of the material. The ACs were tested for their potential to capture CO2. Ultimate and proximate analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2/CO2 gas adsorption/desorption isotherms were used as material characterization methods. Analysis revealed that KOH-activated carbon at 900 °C (AC-900K) exhibited the highest surface area and a pore volume that increased 6 and 3 times compared to pristine rCB. Moreover, the AC-900K possessed a well-developed dual porosity, corresponding to the 22% and 78% of micropore and mesopore volume, respectively. At 0 °C and 25 °C, AC-900K also showed a CO2 adsorption capacity equal to 30.90 cm3/g and 20.53 cm3/g at 1 bar, along with stable cyclic regeneration after 10 cycles. The high dependence of CO2 uptake on the micropore volume at width below 0.7-0.8 nm was identified. The selectivity towards CO2 in relation to N2 reached high values of 350.91 (CO2/N2 binary mixture) and 59.70 (15% CO2/85% N2).

Rice husk hydrochar prepared by hydrochloric acid assisted hydrothermal carbonization for levofloxacin removal in bioretention columns

Hydrochars are promising adsorbents in pollutant removal for water treatment. Herein, hydrochloric acid (HCl) co-hydrothermally treated hydrochars were prepared from rice husk biomass at 180 °C via a one-step hydrothermal method. Adsorption behaviors of levofloxacin (LVX) on hydrochars were evaluated. The specific surface area and pore volume of the hydrochar synthesized in 5 mol/L HCl (5H-HC) were almost 17 and 8 times of untreated hydrochar, respectively. The 5H-HC sample exhibited the highest LVX adsorption capability at room temperature (107 mg/g). Thermodynamic experimental results revealed that adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. Yan model provided the best description of the breakthrough behavior of LVX in bioretention column, indicating that the adsorption on the samples involved several rate-limiting factors including diffusion and mass transfer. The results show that facile HCl co-hydrothermal carbonization of waste biomass can produce novel hydrochars with high LVX adsorption ability.

Fabrication of carboxylic functionalized poly(methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their application for removing ionic dyes from polluted water

The removal of dyes from wastewater that are released during industrial processes has become a significant concern in the environmental science in recent years. To tackle this issue, researchers are exploring the use of nanomaterials for designing new adsorbents. Another promising approach is to grow polymer brushes with high density functional groups via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), which can significantly enhance their ability to absorb dyes. The presence of carboxylic acid groups on the adsorbent material significantly contributes to its efficacy in dye removal by enhancing adsorption capacity, enabling selective adsorption, pH-dependent behavior, chelation, or complexation, and providing stability for repeated usage. In this work, a nanomaterial of carboxylic functionalized poly (methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH) was synthesized by the growth of PTBAEMA via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization, then reacted with succinic anhydride reaction. The chemical structure of MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH was confirmed using multiple methods, including FT-IR and DLS, and the core-brush morphology was observed clearly using TEM. MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH were subsequently employed to adsorb hazardous dyes efficiently. The anionic polymer brushes enabled the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and tetraethylrhodamine (TER) at optimum pH value of 3. The results also indicated that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH possessed significant adsorption capacity (263.4 and 212.9 mg g-1 for MB and TER, respectively) and fast adsorption rate (within 15 min), which can be explained by the abundance of adsorptive polymer brushes and the small size of the nanoparticles. Overall, the findings indicate that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH is a highly effective adsorbent material for eliminating dye pollutants from wastewater.

Seaweed-based alginate/hydroxyapatite composite for the effective removal of bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae, and crystal violet from water

A novel cost-effective and multifunctional nanocomposite was developed based on sustainable macroalgae biomass. The brown seaweed Sargassum latifolium was utilized for alginate extraction and the calcareous red seaweed Tricleocarpa fragilis was utilized as CaCO3 source for nanohydroxyapatite synthesis. The developed Zn2+-crosslinked alginate/nanohydroxyapatite (ZA/nHA) beads were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and TEM. The antimicrobial potential of ZA/nHA to disinfect synthetic Escherichia coli-contaminated water was evaluated at different bacterial load and composite concentrations. The developed ZA/nHA effectively inactivated bacteria at initial concentration ≤ 105 CFU mL-1 and 0.5-1% (w/v) of ZA/nHA within 300-360 min. The kinetics of bacterial disinfection exhibited better fitting to Weibull model than Log-liner model, which confirmed the disinfection process. Furthermore, treatment of the cyanobacterium (Chroococcus sp.) and the microalga (Chlorella sp.) with ZA/nHA showed promising antialgal properties as indicated by reductions in chlorophyll a. The treatment indicated 100% and 90% removal of Chroococcus sp. and Chlorella sp. within 2 and 4 days, respectively. The developed ZA/nHA also exhibited a promising application as a biosorbent for crystal violet (CV). The adsorption process was very fast (0.171 mg CV g-1 adsorbent was removed within 7 min at pH 6.0). The adsorption kinetics exhibited better fitting to the pseudo-second order and Elovich models than the pseudo-first order equation. Besides, Sips model better represented the isotherm data of CV adsorption. The thermodynamic analysis indicated exothermic adsorption, which became more favorable at low temperature and high CV concentration. The developed nanocomposite is eco-friendly and suitable for multiple environmental applications.

Tailoring Homogeneous Hydrogel Nanospheres by Facile Ultra-Sonication Assisted Cross-Linked Copolymerization for Rhodamine B Dye Adsorption

The present paper describes the design of shape-oriented hydrogel nanospheres using a facile ultrasonication-supported crosslinked copolymerization technique. The effect of variable monomer concentration on the homogeneity of hydrogel nanospheres was investigated. The chitosan-cl-poly(MMA) hydrogel nanospheres were well characterized using various techniques such as FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and TEM. The chitosan-cl-poly(MMA) hydrogel nanospheres were studied for their swelling behavior and could potentially be used as a novel adsorbent for rhodamine B dye remediation from aqueous media. The study found that utilizing chitosan-cl-poly(MMA) nanohydrogel spheres at the optimal pH 5 increased RhB dye adsorption capacity from 7.9 to 17.8 mg/g (pH 2 to 5), followed by a slight reduction. Furthermore, when nanohydrogel concentration increased, adsorption capacity dropped from 18.03 to 2.8 mg/g, but adsorption percentage climbed from 90.2% to 97.8%. At an initial dye concentration of 140 mg/L, rhodamine B adsorption achieved 204.3 mg/g in 60 min. The rhodamine B dye adsorption study includes adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics analyses. The interpretation of the adsorption study revealed that Langmuir isotherms fit best with a qmax value of 276.26 mg/g, which is in close approximation with the experimental value, whereas pseudo-second-order kinetics explains the adsorption process rate. The interaction of RhB dye with chitosan-cl-poly(MMA) hydrogel nanospheres involves multiple forces such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, etc.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Fe-Doped Cadmium Oxide Showed Bactericidal Behavior and Highly Efficient Visible Light Photocatalysis

Cationic dyes present in industrial effluents significantly reduce the effectiveness of remediation operations. Considering the terrible impact of these pollutants on environment and biodiversity, investigating strategies to remove potentially harmful compounds from water is becoming an increasingly intriguing issue. In this work, we employed a simple hydrothermal technique to synthesize Fe-doped CdO (2, 4, and 6 wt %) nanostructures and assessed their efficacy in degrading methylene blue (MB) dye and inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. Structural, morphological, and optical characterization of produced nanomaterials was also performed using X-ray diffraction, TEM, and UV absorption spectra. The photocatalytic decomposition of MB was significantly enhanced (58.8%) by using Fe (6 wt %)-doped CdO catalysts for 80 min under irradiation. In addition, 2.05-5.05 mm inhibitory zones were seen against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), whereas the range for Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) was 1.65-2.75 mm. These nanostructures were shown to be very effective inhibitors of beta-lactamase, d-alanine-d-alanine ligase B, and fatty acid synthase inhibitor by in silico molecular docking investigations.

Effective utilization of discarded reverse osmosis post-carbon for adsorption of dyes from wastewater

In this study, the deployment of post Reverse Osmosis (RO)-carbon as a adsorbent for dye removal from water has been investigated. The post RO-carbon was thermally activated (RO900), and the material thus obtained exhibited high surface area viz. 753 m2/g. In the batch system, the efficient Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO) removal was obtained by using 0.08 g and 0.13 g/50 mL adsorbent dosage respectively. Moreover, 420 min was the optimized equilibration time for both the dyes. The maximum adsorption capacities of RO900 for MB and MO dyes were 223.29 and 158.14 mg/g, respectively. The comparatively higher MB adsorption was attributed to the electrostatic attraction between adsorbent and MB. The thermodynamic findings revealed the process as spontaneous, endothermic, and accompanied by entropy increment. Additionally, simulated effluent was treated, and >99% dye removal efficiency was achieved. To mimic an industrial perspective, MB adsorption onto RO900 was also carried out in continuous mode. The initial dye concentration and effluent flow rate were among the process parameters that were optimized using the continuous mode of operation. Further, the experimental data of continuous mode was fitted with Clark, Yan, and Yoon-Nelson models. Py-GC/MS investigation revealed that dye-loaded adsorbents could be pyrolyzed to produce valuable chemicals. The cost and low toxicity associated benefits of discarded RO-carbon over other adsorbents reveal the significance of the present study.

Low-cost biosorption of Fe(II) and Fe(III) from single and binary solutions using Ulva lactuca-derived cellulose nanocrystals-graphene oxide composite film

The marine algal biomass of Ulva lactuca was utilized for the extraction of cellulose and the development of cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide film. Cellulose nanocrystals with 50-150 nm were produced by H₂SO₄ hydrolysis of the algal cellulose. The adsorption efficiency of the nanocomposite film for Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions was successfully evaluated using Box-Behnken design. The maximum removal for Fe(II) (64.15%) could be attained at pH 5.13, adsorbent dosage 7.93 g L^-1 and Fe(II) concentration 15.39 mg L^-1, while the biosorption of Fe(III) was 69.92% at pH 5.0, adsorbent dosage 2 g L^-1, and Fe(III) concentration 15.0 mg L^-1. However, in the binary system, the removal efficiency of Fe(II) was enhanced to 95.48% at Fe(II):Fe(III) ratio of 1:1, while the Fe(III) removal was increased to 79.17% at ratio 1:2. The pseudo-second-order kinetics exhibited better fitting to the experimental results of Fe(II) and Fe(III) adsorption in both single and binary systems. The intra-particle diffusion was prominent during the biosorption, but the effect of the external mass transfer was significant. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms showed satisfactory fitting to the experimental data, but they differ in priority based on iron state and pH. The adsorption of Fe(II) in the presence of Fe(III) in a mixture was best represented by the extended Langmuir model, while the extended Langmuir-Freundlich model best fitted the adsorption of Fe(III). The FT-IR analysis indicated that physisorption through electrostatic interaction/complexation is the predominant mechanism for the adsorption of iron using the nanocomposite film.

Recent Advances in Thallium Removal from Water Environment by Metal Oxide Material

Thallium is widely used in industrial and agricultural development. However, there is still a lack of systematic understanding of its environmental hazards and related treatment methods or technologies. Here, we critically assess the environmental behavior of thallium in aqueous systems. In addition, we first discuss the benefits and limitations of the synthetic methods of metal oxide materials that may affect the practicality and scalability of TI removal from water. We then assess the feasibility of different metal oxide materials for TI removal from water by estimating the material properties and contaminant removal mechanisms of four metal oxides (Mn, Fe, Al, and Ti). Next, we discuss the environmental factors that may inhibit the practicality and scalability of Tl removal from water. We conclude by highlighting the materials and processes that could serve as more sustainable alternatives to TI removal with further research and development.

Synthesis of crown ether-based microporous organic networks: A new type of efficient adsorbents for chlorophenols

Microporous organic networks (MONs) are a booming class of functional materials in elimination of environmental pollutants. However, the limit varieties of MONs still restrict their broad applications. Here we report the synthesis of a novel type of crown ether (CE)-based MONs via the coupling between brominated 18-crown-6 ether and different aromatic alkynyls. The constructed CE-based MONs integrates the good conjugation property of MONs and the inherent host-guest binding sites of CE, allowing the ultrafast and efficient adsorption and removal of a typical environmental priority pollutant 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The hydrophobic CE-based MONs can also address the recovery challenge of unstable discrete CE in most organic and inorganic solvents. All CE-based MONs displayed fast adsorption kinetics (< 3 min) and large adsorption capacities (229.1-341.7 mg g^-1) for 2,4,6-TCP. The CE-based MONs also gave stable adsorption capacities for 2,4,6-TCP in pH range of 4.0-6.0, NaCl concentration of 0-40 mg L^-1, HA concentration of 0-30 mg L^-1, or H₂O₂ ratio of < 5 %. Density functional theory calculation, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra evaluation revealed adsorption process involved hydrophobic, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions. The CE-based MONs also showed favorable reusability and good adsorption for other toxic chlorophenols. This work highlights the potential of CE-based MONs in contaminants elimination.

Inorganic/organic combination: Inorganic particles/polymer composites for tissue engineering applications

Biomaterials have ushered the field of tissue engineering and regeneration into a new era with the development of advanced composites. Among these, the composites of inorganic materials with organic polymers present unique structural and biochemical properties equivalent to naturally occurring hybrid systems such as bones, and thus are highly desired. The last decade has witnessed a steady increase in research on such systems with the focus being on mimicking the peculiar properties of inorganic/organic combination composites in nature. In this review, we discuss the recent progress on the use of inorganic particle/polymer composites for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. We have elaborated the advantages of inorganic particle/polymer composites over their organic particle-based composite counterparts. As the inorganic particles play a crucial role in defining the features and regenerative capacity of such composites, the review puts a special emphasis on the various types of inorganic particles used in inorganic particle/polymer composites. The inorganic particles that are covered in this review are categorised into two broad types (1) solid (e.g., calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, etc.) and (2) porous particles (e.g., mesoporous silica, porous silicon etc.), which are elaborated in detail with recent examples. The review also covers other new types of inorganic material (e.g., 2D inorganic materials, clays, etc.) based polymer composites for tissue engineering applications. Lastly, we provide our expert analysis and opinion of the field focusing on the limitations of the currently used inorganic/organic combination composites and the immense potential of new generation of composites that are in development.

Fabrication and response optimization of Moringa oleifera-functionalized nanosorbents for the removal of diesel range organics from contaminated water

The purpose of this research is to synthesize environmentally friendly nanosorbents for the novel adsorption of diesel range organics (DRO) from contaminated water. Central composite design (CCD) analysis of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in a model fitting of the variables predicting the adsorption efficiency of Moringa oleifera-functionalized zerovalent iron particles (ZINPs) for the removal of DRO. The effects of the reaction parameters on the response were screened using 2⁴ factorial designs to determine the statistically significant independent variables. A quadratic model predicting the DRO adsorption efficiency of ZINPs with an F value of 276.84 (p value < 0.0001) was developed. Diagnostic plots show that the predicted values were in excellent agreement with actual experimental values (R² = 0.99). The maximum percentage removal of DRO of 92.6% was achieved after optimization, using the synthesized ZINPs after 8 h of contact between DRO substrates and ZINPs at pH of 8, the temperature of 25 °C, with an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L and at composite desirability of 1. Characterization of ZINPs revealed the formation of quasi nanospheres and nanocubes with an average particle diameter of 50.9 ± 9.7, a crystallite size of 15.31 nm, a crystallinity index of 32.47% and a pore width of 75.69-88.59 nm. The adsorption equilibrium data modelling of ZINPs for adsorption of DRO was best described by Langmuir isotherm with the maximum monolayer coverage capacity of 7.194 mg/g. The separation factor [Formula: see text], indicated favourable adsorption. The adsorption kinetic data were consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetics indicating probable chemisorption.

Carbonized π-conjugated polymer-coated porous silica: preparation and evaluating its extraction ability for berberine

In view of the limitations of existing berberine solid-phase extraction adsorbents, this paper proposes a novel carbonized π-conjugated polymer-coated porous silica (SiO₂@C-π-CP) adsorbent with simple process and low cost for efficient extraction of berberine by multiple interactions. Characterization methods, including Brunner-Emmet-Teller measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy techniques, were used to verify the successful modification of carbonized π-conjugated polymer on the surface of porous silica. The berberine was selected as target molecule, and the adsorption mechanism and process were investigated through adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamic studies. The fitting results show that the adsorption of berberine by SiO₂@C-π-CP well conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. By optimizing the main SPE parameters, the SPE method based on SiO₂@C-π-CP was developed. Excellent results were obtained, including low limit of detection (0.75 ng mL^-1) and limit of quantification (2 ng mL^-1), wide linearity (2-13,000 ng mL^-1), and satisfactory relative standard deviations (RSD) of inter-day (1.5%) and intra-day (6.2%). Finally, the SiO₂@C-π-CP also has been successfully used to the enrichment of berberine in real urine samples. This research makes clear that SiO₂@C-π-CP has outstanding potential for trace enrichment of berberine alkaloids.

Enhanced removal of Cd2+ from water by AHP-pretreated biochar: Adsorption performance and mechanism

The sesame straw-derived biochar was successfully prepared via alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment in this study. Systematic experimental characterizations, 15 relevant batch and column adsorption models, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculation were used to investigate the performances and micro-mechanisms of Cd²⁺ adsorption onto biochar. We found AHP-pretreatment could greatly improve the adsorption performance of biochar for Cd²⁺. The maximum Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity of AHP-pretreated biochar (87.13 mg g^-1) was much larger than that of unpretreated biochar. Cd²⁺ adsorption was mainly dominated by the chemisorption of the homogeneous surface monolayer. The hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of biochar provided preferential adsorption sites, and liquid film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion were two dominant rate-controlling steps. Our results showed that ion exchange, co-precipitation, surface complexation, and Cd²⁺-π interaction were the dominant adsorption mechanisms. Especially, DFT calculations well-identified that lone-pair electrons during complexation and π electrons during coordination were provided by oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic rings, respectively. The experimental breakthrough curves fitted better with the theoretical value of the BJP model, compared to Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and EXY models. Overall, our study provides a promising method for Cd²⁺ removal from wastewater and resource utilization of agricultural wastes.

Removal of Thallium from Aqueous Solutions by Adsorption onto Alumina Nanoparticles

Thallium (I) was removed from aqueous solution by using gamma-alumina nanoparticles (γANPs) materials as nano adsorbents. Varied experimental conditions such as adsorbent dose, agitation time, initial concentration, pH, and temperature effects were carried out in batch conditions in view of the optimization of thallium (I) adsorption and the identification of the adsorption mechanisms in the system γANPs-Tl. The pH effect indicated a remarkable increase in the quantity of Tl(I) removed for pH values ranging from 4 to 8, an almost constant magnitude for pH values between 8 and 10, and a decrease for pH values above 10. Considering an initial Tl(I) concentration of 20 µg/L and an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L at a pH value of 8.5, the removal was achieved at 95.12 ± 0.02% efficiency. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm perfectly described the adsorption mechanism. The process of thallium (I) adsorption reaction, as highlighted by thermodynamic investigations, was found to be spontaneous and exothermic with coexistence of physisorption and chemisorption with a dominance of physisorption. The diffusion model predicted multi-linearity, suggesting an involvement of surface spread and intraparticle diffusion in the sorption process. Thallium removal was effective by using γANPs as nano adsorbents.

Ammonia removal from industrial effluent using zirconium oxide and graphene-oxide nanocomposites

The present study developed and evaluated nano-adsorbents based on zirconium oxide and graphene oxide (ZrO₂/GO) as a novel adsorbent for the efficient removal of ammonia from industrial effluents. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to evaluate and identify the novel adsorbent in terms of morphology, crystallography, and chemical composition. The pH (7), adsorbent quantities (20 mg), adsorbent contact time (30 min) with the sample, and initial ammonia concentration were all tuned for ammonia uptake. To validate ammonia adsorption on the ZrO₂/GO adsorbent, several kinetic models and adsorption isotherms were also utilized. The results showed that the kinetics of ammonia adsorption are of the pseudo-second order due to high R² (>0.99) value as compared first-order (R² = 0.52). The chemical behavior and equilibrium isotherm were analyzed using the isotherm models and Langmuir model provided high R² (>0.98) as compared Freundlich (>0.96). Hence, yielding a maximum uniform equilibrium adsorption capacity of 84.47 mg g^-1. The presence of functional groups on the surface of graphene oxide and ZrO₂ nanoparticles, which interact efficiently with ammonia species and provide an efficient surface for good ammonia removal, is most likely to be responsible.

Facile preparation of novel magnetic mesoporous FeMn binary oxides from Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel for antimony removal from water

Effective removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) has long been an urgent task for protecting human health and environment. In this study, novel magnetic mesoporous FeMn binary oxides (MMFMs) were fabricated via calcinating the Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel, and the structure of MMFMs were closely related to the Fe:Mn ratio. Owing to the mesoporous structure together with synergistic effect of FeMn binary component, the MMFMs exhibited excellent mass transfer and adsorption ability to Sb(III) and Sb(V). MMFM₃ achieved a maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacity of 281.5 and 204.6 mg/g, respectively. Co-existing anions of Cl^-, NO₃^- and SO₄^2- exhibited marginal influence on the adsorption for both Sb(III) and Sb(V), except the PO₄^3- for Sb(III) and SiO₃^2- or PO₄^3- for Sb(V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation revealed that high valence Mn(IV) was mainly responsible for the oxidation transformation of the highly toxic Sb(III) into less toxic Sb(V), while the FeO_x content played major role for the adsorption of Sb(V). The generated inner-sphere FeOSb complex between Fe-OH groups and Sb(III/V) dominantly contributed to the removal of Sb(III/V). Overall, mesoporous structure, magnetic separation ability, excellent adsorption performance together with exceptional regeneration properties demonstrated the great potential of MMFMs for Sb(III/V) remediation.

Statistical evaluation of cow-dung derived activated biochar for phenol adsorption: Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Sustainable and economical wastewater treatment forms a vital step towards long-term sustainability of petrochemical refineries and industries. An affordable solution to this challenge is to employ biowaste as the key consumable active component. This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of activated biochar derived from cow-dung, a readily available raw material in low-resource settings, and its application for adsorption of phenol, one of the major pollutants in industrial wastewater. Adsorption parameters are optimized by using response surface methodology. Phenol adsorption equilibrium and kinetics data are well fitted to Freundlich isotherm (R² = 0.97) and pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.99), respectively. The maximal adsorption capacity (518.89 mg/g) was attained using the Langmuir isotherm model at pH 6.0. Negative values of thermodynamic parameters confirmed the spontaneity, feasibility, and exothermic behaviour of adsorption reaction. The results demonstrate that synthesized activated biochar showed an excellent phenol adsorption capacity of 98.8 %.

Adsorption isotherm models: A comprehensive and systematic review (2010-2020)

Among numerous methods developed in purification and separation industries, the adsorption process has received considerable attention due to its inexpensive, facile, and eco-friendly nature. The importance of the adsorption process causes extraordinary endeavors for modeling the adsorption isotherms during the years; thus, myriads of research have been conducted and many reviews have been published. In this paper, we have attempted to gather the most widely used adsorption isotherms and their related definitions, along with examples of correlated work of the recent decade. In the present review, 37 adsorption isotherms with about 400 references have been collected from the research published in the period of 2010-2020. The adsorption isotherms utilized are alphabetically organized for ease of access. The parameters of each isotherm, as well as the applicable definitions, are presented in the table, in addition to being discussed in the text. Another table is provided for the practical use of researchers, featuring the usage of the related isotherms in peer-reviewed studies.

Ultrasound-assisted adsorption on porous ceramic for removal of iron in water

This study proposes the use of an ultrasound-assisted adsorption system coupled to porous ceramic fragments to improve the removal of iron from FeSO₄ aqueous solution. Ultrasound was applied using an ultrasound bath at a low frequency (37 kHz, 330 W). The optimized conditions for Fe removal were achieved by 7 g of adsorbent, 40 min of sonication, 20 mg L^-1 of initial Fe concentration, and 30 °C of reaction temperature. After optimizing the conditions, the method was applied for the removal of iron in groundwater. A central composite design and response surface methodology were used to evaluate the degree to which different variables had a significant effect on iron removal. The efficiency of iron removal using the selected conditions for FeSO₄ solution was near to 100%. However, for groundwater samples, the maximum iron removal efficiencies of the system with and without ultrasound were 80.7% and 51.1%, respectively, indicating that the adsorption with ultrasound was significantly higher than that without ultrasound. It was shown that the proposed ultrasound-assisted adsorption system can be used to enhance the removal of inorganic iron from groundwater.

Kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibrium, surface modelling, and atomic absorption analysis of selective Cu(ii) removal from aqueous solutions and rivers water using silica-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethoxy)ethan-1-ol hybrid material

The removal of heavy metals is attracting considerable attention due to their undesirable effects on the environment. In this investigation, a new adsorbent based on silica functionalized with pyridin-2-ylmethanol (SiPy) was successfully synthesized to yield to a hybrid material. FTIR, SEM, TGA, and specific surface area analysis were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the SiPy hybrid material. Various heavy metal ions such as Cu(ii), Zn(ii), Cd(ii), and Pb(ii) were selected to examine the adsorption efficiency of the newly prepared adsorbent, optimized at varying solution pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature. The adsorbent SiPy displayed good adsorption capacity of 90.25, 75.38, 55.23, and 35.12 mg g⁻¹ for Cu(ii), Zn(ii), Cd(ii), and Pb(ii), respectively, at 25 min and pH = 6. The adsorption behaviors of metal ions onto the SiPy adsorbent fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic mode and the isotherm was better described by the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic studies disclose spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. Furthermore, the SiPy adsorbent retained good selectivity and regeneration properties after five adsorption–desorption cycles of Cu(ii). A computational investigation of the adsorption mechanism indicates that the N-pyridine, O-hydroxyl, and ether O-atoms play a predominant role during the capture of Cu(ii), Zn(ii), Cd(ii), and Pb(ii). This study proposes the SiPy adsorbent as an attractive material for the selective removal of Cu(ii) from real river water and real industrial wastewater.

Preparation and characterization of lignin-derived hard templated carbon(s): Statistical optimization and methyl orange adsorption isotherm studies

In this study, lignin-derived zeolite templated carbon materials were fabricated to remove the organic contaminant, methyl orange. Response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the adsorption parameters. Based on Box-Behnken design, a quadratic model was developed to correlate the adsorption variables with the response, removal efficiency. Analysis of variance revealed the adsorbent dosage as the most influential adsorption variable. Lignin derived ZSM-5 (PZ) and mordenite (PM) templated carbon materials exhibited high surface area; 476.0 and 716.0 m²/g respectively. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of PZ and PM for methyl orange was 514.0 and 225.0 mg/g, respectively. The experimental kinetic data best fitted to pseudo-second-order model for both the adsorbents. PZ adsorbent was also utilized to treat real wastewater containing dyes and achieved 40 % methyl orange removal efficiency. Adsorption thermodynamic study revealed the process as spontaneous, exothermic and also indicated the increment in entropy after adsorption.

Combination of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 and magnetic porous porphyrin organic polymer for preconcentration of neonicotinoid insecticides in river water

A nanostructured material composed of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 and magnetic porous porphyrin organic polymer (ZIF-67@MPPOP) was successfully synthesized and applied for the enrichment of neonicotinoid insecticides in river water. The analytes were detected and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Influential experimental parameters were optimized using response surface methodology based on Box Behnken design. The adsorption capacities were 69.46, 80.53, 85.39 and 90.0 mg g^-1 for thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and clothianidin, respectively. At optimal experimental conditions, low limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ) and linearity were 0.0091-0.04 µg L^-1, 0.04-0.13 µg L^-1 and (0.04-600 µg L^-1), respectively. The relative standard deviation used to evaluate the reproducibility and repeatability of the method was less than 5%. Finally, the method was employed for determination of four neonicotinoid insecticides in river water.

Metformin functionalized dendritic fibrous nanosilica (KCC-1-nPr-Met) as an innovative and green nanocatalyst for the efficient synthesis of tetrahydro-4H-chromene derivatives

An innovative nanocatalyst (KCC-1-nPr-Met) has been prepared from the covalent attachment of metformin on the channels and the pores of n-propyl amine functionalized dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS) and used towards efficient, green, and high yield synthesis of tetrahydro-4H-chromenes derivatives by one-pot three-component reaction of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and dimedone in H₂ O-EtOH at room temperature. The designed nanocatalyst has been characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and adsorption/desorption analysis (BET) techniques. Also, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to study the morphology of prepared nanocatalyst. The engineered nanocatalyst with uniform fibrous spheres has dendritic structure, high pore volume (0.35 cm³ /g), and great surface area (178 m² /g). Hence, the specific dendritic structure of the prepared nanocatalyst not only improve the diffusion ability of the reactants and products, but also, increase the availability of dynamic sites in the pores and channels of the catalyst. According to the obtained results, a unique strategy was proposed towards the synthesis of important biologically active scaffolds in the presence of nontoxic and environmental friendly nanocatalyst and media. Milder reaction conditions (room temperature), shorter reaction times (5-30 minutes), excellent yields (92%-98%) of the products with higher purity, very simple workup procedure, and using of EtOH: H₂ O as a green solvent are the advantages of the presented work.

Silica Microspheres-in-Pores Composite Monoliths with Fluorescence and Potential for Water Remediation

Water pollution is a severe worldwide issue. Constructing advanced porous composite materials has been an efficient route to water remediation via adsorption. In this study, a unique microspheres-in-pores monolithic structure was fabricated. An emulsion-templated polymer monolith was first prepared and silica microspheres were subsequently formed in the porous polymer. A silica precursor was modified with a fluorescent dye and co-condensed with other precursors to fabricate porous composites with fluorescent properties, which were enhanced by the presence of Ag nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. This unique material showed good promise in water remediation by removing organic dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater via a flowing filter or monolithic column separation.

Synthesis of novel adsorbent based on tetrasulfide-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 for removal of Hg(II) cations

Hg(II) has been identified to be one of the extremely toxic heavy metals because of its hazardous effects and this fact that it is even more hazardous to animals than other pollutants such as Ag, Au, Cd, Ni, Pb, Co, Cu, and Zn. Accordingly, for the first time, tetrasulfide-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 (TS-KCC-1) spheres were synthesized by a facile, conventional ultrasonic-assisted, sol–gel-hydrothermal preparation approach to adsorb Hg(II) from aqueous solution. Tetrasulfide groups (–S–S–S–S–) were chosen as binding sites due to the strong and effective interaction of mercury ions (Hg(II)) with sulfur atoms. Hg(II) uptake onto TS-KCC-1 in a batch system has been carried out. Isotherm and kinetic results showed a very agreed agreement with Langmuir and pseudo-first-order models, respectively, with a Langmuir maximum uptake capacity of 132.55 mg g^–1 (volume of the solution = 20.0 mL; adsorbent dose = 5.0 mg; pH = 5.0; temperature: 198 K; contact time = 40 min; shaking speed = 180 rpm). TS-KCC-1was shown to be a promising functional nanoporous material for the uptake of Hg(II) cations from aqueous media. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on the uptake of toxic Hg(II) cations by tetrasulfide-functionalized KCC-1 prepared by a conventional ultrasonic-assisted sol–gel-hydrothermal synthesis method.

Adsorption of cationic dyes, drugs and metal from aqueous solutions using a polymer composite of magnetic/β-cyclodextrin/activated charcoal/Na alginate: Isotherm, kinetics and regeneration studies

In this work, we successfully synthesized novel polymer gel beads based on functionalized iron oxide (Fe3O4), activated charcoal (AC) particles with β-cyclodextrin (CD) and sodium alginate (SA) polymer (Fe3O4/CD/AC/SA), by a simple, reproducible and inexpensive method. These beads proved to be versatile and strong adsorbents with magnetic properties and high adsorption capacity. The composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, adsorption at -196 °C, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and point of zero charge measurements. Two dyes, two drugs and one metal were used to test the adsorption capability of the prepared polymer nanocomposite. The adsorbent showed good removal efficiencies for the studied pollutants, especially the cationic dyes and the metal, when compared to other low-cost adsorbents. The saturated adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/CD/AC/SA reached 5.882 mg g-1 for methyl violet (MV), 2.283 mg g-1 for brilliant green (BG), 2.551 mg g-1 for norfloxacin (NOX), 3.125 mg g-1 for ciprofloxacin (CPX), 10.10 mg g-1 for copper metal ion (Cu(II)). The adsorption isotherm studies showed that data fitted well with Langmuir and Temkin isotherms models. The kinetic data showed good correlation coefficient with low error function for the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The data analysis was carried out using error and regression coefficient functions for the estimation of best-fitting isotherm and kinetic models, namely: chi-square test (χ2) and sum of the squares of errors (SSE). The activation energy was found to be 47.68 kJ mol-1 for BG, 29.09 kJ mol-1 for MV, 28.93 kJ mol-1 for NOX, 4.53 kJ mol-1 for CPX and 17.08 kJ mol-1 for Cu(II), which represent chemisorption and physisorption behavior of sorbent molecules. The polymer composites can be regenerated and easily separated from aqueous solution without any weight loss. After regeneration, the Fe3O4/CD/AC/SA beads still have good adsorption capacities up to four cycles of desorption and adsorption. The results indicate that the polymer gel beads are promising adsorbents for the removal of different categories of toxicants (like dyes, drugs and metal) in single adsorbate aqueous systems. Thus, the novel Fe3O4/CD/AC/SA beads can be effectively employed for a large-scale applications as environmentally compatible materials for the adsorption of different categories of pollutants.

Cadmium removal by MgCl2 modified biochar derived from crayfish shell waste: Batch adsorption, response surface analysis and fixed bed filtration

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is regarded as a disturbing environmental problem due to its serious risks to the water body and human health. The removal of cadmium from wastewater is thus crucial to avoid its harmful effects on the ecosystem. This study comprehensively investigated Cd(II) adsorption onto MgCl₂ modified biochar (MgC600) and results showed that the adsorption capacity of MgC600 was more than twice of that of pristine biochar due to its enhanced ion exchange ability. Response surface analysis revealed that reaction time played a crucial role in the Cd(II) adsorption, followed by initial concentration and solution pH. Moreover, the optimal adsorption conditions and capacity were precisely given by the quadratic regression model and thus proved that the model can be applied to predict the operation conditions of Cd(II) adsorption. Finally, a new model defined as BJP model [Formula: see text] was proposed and proved to be more suitable for the fixed bed filtration process. Overall, our findings provide a promising material in treatment of Cd(II)-rich wastewater and give a clear picture of its application. More importantly, the newly developed BJP model can accurately describe the fixed bed filtration process and further promote its application in wastewater treatment.

Double-side microcantilevers as a key to understand the adsorption mechanisms and kinetics of chemical warfare agents on vertically-aligned TiO2 nanotubes

Microgravimetric sensor platforms with physico- or chemo-selective interfaces offer promising sensing properties. They are widely used to detect chemical warfare agents (CWAs). However, a comprehensive insight into adsorption mechanisms and interactions between low concentrations of these adsorbates and low-mass adsorbents is still lacking. In this study, we report a complete and detailed analytical method to model the adsorption processes of low traces of vapor-phase DiMethyl MethylPhosphonate (DMMP), a conventional simulant of CWAs, on a double-side nanostructured microcantilever coated with vertically-aligned titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂-NTs). We find that the geometrical configuration of NTs plays an important role in the diffusion regimes of molecules during the adsorption. This study shines light on the adsorption and kinetic mechanisms of low-traces DMMP offering opportunities to have a better insight of the adsorption of CWAs on complex nanostructures and to improve microcantilever sensors.

Extraction of ingredients from tea leaves using oxidative enzymatic reaction and optimization of extraction conditions

Peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) are used as biocatalyst in many processes such as oxidization reactions, wastewater treatment, phenol synthesis and so on. The purpose of current study is enzymes extraction from biomass (tea leaves) as well as evaluation of their activation. Different parameters including temperature, buffer concentration, buffer type, buffer/tea leaves ratio, addition of high molecular weight polymers and emulsifiers, and pH were optimized in order to obtain the highest enzymes activity. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) procedure is employed for statistical analysis of enzymes extraction. It is understood from the result that PPO and POD possess the highest activity at temperatures of 25 °C and 50 °C, pH 7 and 5, buffer molarity of 0.1, and 0.05, buffer/tea leaves ratio = 5 for both, contact time = 20 min and 10 min, and presence of 6% and 3% PVP, 5% and 0% Tween 80 for PPO and POD, respectively. Amounts of highest activity for PPO and POD biocatalysts were calculated 0.42 U/mL and 0.025493 U/mL, respectively. Moreover, the entire inactivation of PPO took place after 30 min at 40 °C and 60 °C and 20 min at 80 °C. However, POD lost 35% of its activity after 30 min at 40 °C and 60 °C. The amount of 6% POD activity was kept after 45 min at 80 °C. Generally, it was indicated that POD was more resistant to thermal treatment than PPO.

Recent Advances on Fabrication of Polymeric Composites Based on Multicomponent Reactions for Bioimaging and Environmental Pollutant Removal

As the core of polymer chemistry, manufacture of functional polymers is one of research hotspots over the past several decades. Various polymers are developed for diverse applications due to their tunable structures and unique properties. However, traditional step-by-step preparation strategies inevitably involve some problems, such as separation, purification, and time-consuming. The multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are emerging as environmentally benign synthetic strategies to construct multifunctional polymers or composites with pendant groups and designed structures because of their features, such as efficient, fast, green, and atom economy. This mini review summarizes the latest advances about fabrication of multifunctional fluorescent polymers or adsorptive polymeric composites through different MCRs, including Kabachnik-Fields reaction, Biginelli reaction, mercaptoacetic acid locking imine reaction, Debus-Radziszewski reaction, and Mannich reaction. The potential applications of these polymeric composites in biomedical and environmental remediation are also highlighted. It is expected that this mini-review will promote the development preparation and applications of functional polymers through MCRs.

Synthesis of multi-organo-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 for highly efficient adsorption of acid fuchsine and acid orange II from aqueous solution

Multi-functionalized fibrous silica KCC-1 (MF-KCC-1) bearing amine, tetrasulfide, and thiol groups was synthesized via a post-functionalization method and fully characterized by several methods such as FTIR, FESEM, EDX-Mapping, TEM, and N₂ adsorption-desorption techniques. Due to abundant surface functional groups, accessible active adsorption sites, high surface area (572 m² g^-1), large pore volume (0.98 cm³ g^-1), and unique fibrous structure, mesoporous MF-KCC-1 was used as a potential adsorbent for the uptake of acid fuchsine (AF) and acid orange II (AO) from water. Different adsorption factors such as pH of the dye solution, the amount of adsorbent, initial dye concentration, and contact time, affecting the uptake process were optimized and isotherm and kinetic studies were conducted to find the possible mechanism involved in the process. For both AF and AO dyes, the Langmuir isotherm model and the PFO kinetic model show the most agreement with the experimental data. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the calculated maximum adsorption capacity for AF and AO were found to be 574.5 mg g^-1 and 605.9 mg g^-1, respectively, surpassing most adsorption capacities reported until now which is indicative of the high potential of mesoporous MF-KCC-1 as an adsorbent for removal applications.

Synthesis, molecular dynamics simulation and adsorption study of different pollutants on functionalized mesosilica

Experimental and computational works were carried out on a new type of mesoporous silica. In the experimental section, functionalized hollow mesosilica spheres were prepared via a facile technique and then evaluated using some analytical techniques (FESEM, TEM, L-XRD, FTIR, BET-BJH, and TGA). The obtained results revealed that the synthesized material had hollow structure with a diamino-grafted porous shell. The molecular separation of crystal Violet (CV) and neutral Red (NR) dyes from water were investigated by adsorption process using the synthesized powder. Influence of adsorbent loading was evaluated as adsorption ability and dyes removal efficiency. Also, the obtained modeling results revealed appropriate fitting of data with non-linear Langmuir model. The theoretical studies were employed to study the adsorption and removal mechanism of cationic (CV and NR) and anionic (orange II (OII)) dyes using molecular dynamics calculations. Moreover, the simulation outcomes provided valuable information about quantum chemical properties including the HOMO-LUMO maps, chemical reactivity, global softness (σ) and hardness (η) for silica-linker-water-dyes components.

A novel and facile green synthesis method to prepare LDH/MOF nanocomposite for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

To date, many nanoadsorbents have been developed and used to eliminate heavy metal contamination, however, one of the challenges ahead is the preparation of adsorbents from processes in which toxic organic solvents are used in the least possible amount. Herein, we have developed a new carboxylic acid-functionalized layered double hydroxide/metal-organic framework nanocomposite (LDH/MOF NC) using a simple, effective, and green in situ method. UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH)₂ MOF nanocrystals were grown uniformly over the whole surface of COOH-functionalized Ni₅₀Co₅₀-LDH ultrathin nanosheets in a green water system under a normal solvothermal condition at 100 °C. The synthesized LDH/MOF NC was used as a potential adsorbent for removal of toxic Cd(II) and Pb(II) from water and the influence of important factors on the adsorption process was monitored. Various non-linear isotherm and kinetic models were used to find plausible mechanisms involved in the adsorption, and it was found that the Langmuir and pseudo-first-order models show the best agreement with isotherm and kinetic data, respectively. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by the LDH/MOF NC were found to be 415.3 and 301.4 mg g^-1, respectively, based on the Langmuir model (pH = 5.0, adsorbent dose = 0.02 g, solution volume = 20 mL, contact time = 120 min, temperature = 25 ℃, shaking speed 200 rpm).
