Occurrence and distribution of emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A globally review over the past two decades

Emerging contaminants are pervasive in aquatic environments globally, encompassing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, phenols, biocides, disinfectants and various other compounds. Concentrations of these contaminants are detected ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Even at trace levels, these contaminants can pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This article systematically summarises and categorizes data on the concentrations of 54 common emerging contaminants found in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants across various geographical regions: North America, Europe, Oceania, Africa, and Asia. It reviews the occurrence and distribution of these contaminants, providing spatial and causal analyses based on data from these regions. Notably, the maximum concentrations of the pollutants observed vary significantly across different regions. The data from Africa, in particular, show more frequent detection of pharmaceutical maxima in wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater reuse and pharmaceutical pollution in agriculture: Uptake, transport, accumulation and metabolism of pharmaceutical pollutants within plants

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources has become a growing concern due to its potential impacts on human health and other organisms. The physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals based on their intended therapeutical application, which include antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and antidepressants, is quite diverse. Their presence in wastewater, sewerage water, surface water, ground water and even in drinking water is reported by many researchers throughout the world. Human exposure to these pollutants through drinking water or consumption of aquatic and terrestrial organisms has raised concerns about potential adverse effects, such as endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and developmental abnormalities. Once in the environment, they can persist, undergo transformation, or degrade, leading to a complex mixture of contaminants. Application of treated wastewater, compost, manures or biosolids in agricultural fields introduce pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. As pharmaceuticals are diverse in nature, significant differences are observed during their uptake and accumulation in plants. While there have been extensive studies on aquatic ecosystems, the effect on agricultural land is more disparate. As of now, there are few reports available on the potential of plant uptake and transportation of pharmaceuticals within and between plant organs. This review summarizes the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic water bodies at a range of concentrations and their uptake, accumulation, and transport within plant tissues. Research gaps on pharmaceutical pollutants' specific effect on plant growth and future research scopes are highlighted. The factors affecting uptake of pharmaceuticals including hydrophobicity, ionization, physicochemical properties (pKa, logKow, pH, Henry's law constant) are discussed. Finally, metabolism of pharmaceuticals within plant cells through metabolism phase enzymes and plant responses to pharmaceuticals are reviewed.

Spatiotemporal variations and risk assessment of estrogens in the water of the southern Bohai Sea: A comprehensive investigation spanning three years

The ubiquitous and adverse effects of estrogens have aroused global concerns. Natural and synthetic estrogens in 255 water samples from the southern Bohai Sea were analyzed over three years. Total estrogen concentrations were 11.0-268 ng/L in river water and 1.98-99.7 ng/L in seawater, with bisphenol A (BPA) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) being the predominant estrogens, respectively. Estrogen showed the highest concentrations in summer 2018, followed by spring 2021 and spring 2019, which was consistent with the higher estrogen flux from rivers during summer. Higher estrogen concentrations in 2021 than in 2019 were driven by the higher level of BPA, an additive used in personal protective equipment. Estrogen exhibited higher concentrations in the southern coast of the Yellow River Delta and the northeastern coast of Laizhou bay due to the riverine input and aquaculture. Estrogens could disturb the normal endocrine activities of organisms and edict high ecological risks (90th simulated RQT > 1.0) to aquatic organisms, especially to fish. EE2 was the main contributor of estrogenic potency and ecological risk, which requires special concern. This is the first comprehensive study of estrogen spatiotemporal variations and risks in the Bohai Sea, providing insights into the environmental behavior of estrogens in coastal regions.

Responses to phytoplankton community succession and expression of key functional genes in plateau lakes under 17β-estradiol interference

Steroid estrogens (SEs) have garnered global attention because of their potential hazards to human health and aquatic organisms at low concentrations (ng/L). The ecosystems of plateau freshwater lakes are fragile, the water lag time is long, and pollutants easily accumulate, making them more vulnerable to the impact of SEs. However, the knowledge of the impact of SEs on the growth and decomposition of phytoplankton communities in plateau lakes and the eutrophication process is limited. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of SEs exposure on dominant algal communities and the expression of typical algal functional genes in Erhai Lake using indoor simulations and molecular biological methods. The results showed that phytoplankton were sensitive to 17β-estradiol (E2β) pollution, with a concentration of 50, and 100 ng/L E2β exposure promoting the growth of cyanophyta and chlorophyta in the short term; this poses an ecological risk of inducing algal blooms. E2β of 1000 ng/L exposure led to cross-effects of estrogenic effects and toxicity, with most phytoplankton being inhibited. However, small filamentous cyanobacteria and diatoms exhibited greater tolerance; Melosira sp. even exhibited "low inhibition, high promotion" behavior. Exposure to E2β reduced the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), Pielou index (J), and the number of dominant algal species (S) in phytoplankton communities, leading to instability in community succession. E2β of 50 ng/L enhanced the expression levels of relevant functional genes, such as ftsH, psaB, atpB, and prx, related to Microcystis aeruginosa. E2β of 50 ng/L and 5 mg/L can promote the transcription of Microcystis toxins (MC) related genes (mcyA), leading to more MC production by algal cells.

Concentration of steroid hormones in sediment of surface water resources in China: systematic review and meta-analysis with ecological risk assessment

The risk quotient (RQ) related to Estrone (E1), 17β-E2 (E2), Estriol (E3) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in sediment of water resources in China was calculated using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. Fifty-four papers with 64 data-reports included in our study. The rank order of steroid hormones in sediment based on log-normal distribution in MCS was E1 (3.75 ng/g dw) > E3 (1.53 ng/g dw) > EE2 (1.38 ng/g dw) > E2 (1.17 ng/g dw). According to results, concentration of steroid hormones including E1, E2 and E3 in sediment of Erhai lake, northern Taihu lake and Dianchi river was higher than other locations. The rank order of steroid hormones based on percentage high risk (RQ > 1) was EE2 (87.00%) > E1 (70.00%) > E2 (62.99%) > E3 (11.11%). Hence, contamination control plans for steroid hormones in sediment of water resources in China should be conducted continuously.

Occurrence and sources of hormones in water resources-environmental and health impact

Within recent years, hormones have become emergent contaminants in the water environment. They easily accumulate in living organisms which in effect leads to numerous health problems (endocrine-disrupting mechanism is one of the most known toxic effects). Microbial resistance to antibiotics also became one of the emergent issues related to hormone presence. It was shown that the most common in the environment occur estrogens (E1, E2, E3, and EE2). It has been proven that large amounts of hormones are released from aquaculture as well as from wastewater treatment plants (due to the relatively low separation efficiency of conventional wastewater treatment processes). Within the article's scope, the literature review was performed. The analysis was regarding the characterization of the hormone substances present in the environment, their influence on living organisms and the environment, as well as its potential sources classification.

Steroid hormones in surface water resources in China: systematic review and meta-analysis and probabilistic ecological risk assessment

A Search was conducted in international databases including Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from 10 January 2005 to 15 January 2023. The risk quotient (RQ) of Estrone (E1), 17β-E2 (E2), and Estriol (E3) on the surface water resources of China was calculated by Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique. The rank order of steroid hormones based on pooled (weighted average) concentration in surface water was E3 (2.15 ng/l) > E2 (2.01 ng/l) > E1 (1.385 ng/l). The concentration of E1 in Dianchi lake (236.50.00 ng/l), 17β-E2 in Licun river (78.50 ng/l), and E3 in Dianchi lake (103.1 ng/l) were higher than in other surface water resources in China. RQ related to E1, 17β-E2 and E3 in 68.00%, 88.89% and 3.92% of surface water resources were high ecological risk, respectively. Therefore, carrying out source control plans for steroid hormones in surface water sources should be conducted continuously.

Environmental health hazards of untreated livestock wastewater: potential risks and future perspectives

Due to technological and economic limitations, waste products such as sewage and manure generated in livestock farming lack comprehensive scientific and centralized treatment. This leads to the exposure of various contaminants in livestock wastewater, posing potential risks to both the ecological environment and human health. This review evaluates the environmental and physical health risks posed by common pollutants in livestock wastewater and outlines future treatment methods to mitigate these risks. Residual wastes in livestock wastewater, including pathogenic bacteria and parasites surviving after epidemics or diseases on various farms, along with antibiotics, organic wastes, and heavy metals from farming activities, contribute to environmental damage and pose risks to human health. As the livestock industry's development increasingly impacts society's future negatively, addressing the issue of residual wastes in livestock wastewater discharge becomes imperative. Ongoing advancements in wastewater treatment systems are consistently updating and refining practices to effectively minimize waste exposure at the discharge source, mitigating risks to environmental ecology and human health. This review not only summarizes the "potential risks of livestock wastewater" but also explores "the prospects for the development of wastewater treatment technologies" based on current reports. It offers valuable insights to support the long-term and healthy development of the livestock industry and contribute to the sustainable development of the ecological environment.

Stable and reproducible MIP-ECL sensors for ultra-sensitive and accurate quantitative detection of Estrone

Estrone (E1), as an endogenous estrogen, has a variety of physiological functions in human body and is of great significance to human health. On the other hand, it is a widely distributed and highly disturbing environmental endocrine disruptor in water. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a sensitive, rapid, and inexpensive method for the on-site determination of E1, which is not only for clinical diagnosis and treatment, but also for the investigation and monitoring of endogenous estrogen pollution in environmental water. In this study, Ru(bpy)3 2+/MWCNTs/Nafion/gold electrodes were prepared by surface electrostatic adsorption and ion exchange. A molecularly imprinted membrane (MIP) with the capability to recognize E1 molecules was prepared by sol-gel method, and the electrodes were modified with MIP to form an electrochemical luminescence sensor (MIP-ECL). This method simultaneously possesses ECL's advantage of high sensitivity and MIP's advantage of high selectivity. Moreover, the addition of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) improved the functionalization of the gold electrode surface and increased the binding sites of MIP. Meanwhile, the good conductivity of MWCNTs promoted electron transfer and further improved the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor showed a wide linear interval in which the E1 concentrations can range from 0.1 μg/L to 200 μg/L, along with a high linear correlation coefficient (R 2 = 0.999). The linear regression equation of the sensor was Y = 243.64x-79.989, and the detection limit (LOD) was 0.0047 μg/L. To validate our sensor, actual samples were also measured by the reference method (LC-MS/MS), and it was found that the relative deviation of quantitative results of the two different methods was less than 4.1%. This indicates that the quantitative results obtained by this sensor are accurate and can be used for rapid in situ determination of E1 in clinical samples and environmental water.

Ioxynil and diethylstilbestrol impair cardiac performance and shell growth in the mussel Mytilus coruscus

The herbicide ioxynil (IOX) and the synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES) are environmentally relevant contaminants that act as endocrine disruptors (EDCs) and have recently been shown to be cardiovascular disruptors in vertebrates. Mussels, Mytilus coruscus, were exposed to low doses of IOX (0.37, 0.037 and 0.0037 mg/L) and DES (0.27, 0.027 and 0.0027 mg/L) via the water and the effect monitored by generating whole animal transcriptomes and measuring cardiac performance and shell growth. One day after IOX (0.37 and 0.037 mg/L) and DES (0.27 and 0.027 mg/L) exposure heart rate frequency was decreased in both groups and 0.27 mg/L DES significantly reduced heart rate frequency with increasing time of exposure (P < 0.05) and no acclimatization occurred. The functional effects were coupled to significant differential expression of genes of the serotonergic synapse pathway and cardiac-related genes at 0.027 mg/L DES, which suggests that impaired heart function may be due to interference with neuroendocrine regulation and direct cardiac effect genes. Multiple genes related to detoxifying xenobiotic substances were up regulated and genes related to immune function were down regulated in the DES group (vs. control), indicating that detoxification processes were enhanced, and the immune response was depressed. In contrast, IOX had a minor disrupting effect at a molecular level. Of note was a significant suppression (P < 0.05) by DES of shell growth in juveniles and lower doses (< 0.0027 mg/L) had a more severe effect. The shell growth depression in 0.0027 mg/L DES-treated juveniles was not accompanied by abundant differential gene expression, suggesting that the effect of 0.0027 mg/L DES on shell growth may be direct. The results obtained in the present study reveal for the first time that IOX and DES may act as neuroendocrine disrupters with a broad spectrum of effects on cardiac performance and shell growth, and that DES exposure had a much more pronounced effect than IOX in a marine bivalve.

Occurrence and distribution of PPCPs in water from two largest urban lakes of China: First perspective from DGT in-situ measurement

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are an important group of emerging contaminants that may threaten organisms at trace concentrations. However, research on the occurrence of PPCPs in urban lakes in China is still scarce. In this study, 15 PPCPs in the Tangxun Lake and the Donghu Lake were collected using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Thirteen of the 15 targeted PPCPs were detected in the Tangxun Lake, and all PPCPs were detected in the Donghu Lake, with total concentrations ranging from 160 to 730 ng/L (average: 401 ng/L) and 187 to 1933 ng/L (average: 653 ng/L), respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the dominant PPCP, followed by disinfectants in both lakes. The total concentrations of PPCPs in the Donghu Lake were higher than those in the Tangxun Lake. The spatial distribution characteristics of PPCPs in the two lakes were different, with higher total concentrations in the eastern part than in the western part of the Tangxun Lake spatially and higher in the north-western part than in the south-eastern part of the Donghu Lake. The results of the risk assessment showed that BPA and estrone posed high risks to the aquatic environment (RQ ≥ 1), while triclosan and estriol presented a medium risk (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) in some sites. This study was the first attempt to apply DGT for providing vital data on the evaluation of the ecological risk of PPCPs in the two largest lakes in China, and attention should be paid to the long-term ecological effects caused by the occurrence of PPCPs in lakes.

Estrogens and xenoestrogen residues in manure-based fertilizers and their potential ecological risks

Optimal manure treatment aimed at usage as agricultural soil fertilizers is a prerequisite ecological pollution control strategy. In this work, livestock manure-based fertilizers were collected from 71 animal farms across 14 provinces in China. The contamination levels and potential ecotoxicological risks of residual steroid estrogens (SEs): estrone (E1), estriol (E3), 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) and xenoestrogen (XE) bisphenol A (BPA), were investigated. The results showed that the occurrence frequencies for SEs and XE ranged from 66.67% to 100%, and the mean concentration varied considerably across the study locations. The total content of SEs and XE in Hebei province was the highest, and swine manure-based fertilizers concentrations were higher than the levels reported in other animal fertilizers. Compared with farm level manure, manure-based fertilizers are processed by composting, and the micropollutants quantities are significantly reduced (mean: 87.65 - 534.02 μg/kg). The total estradiol equivalent quantity (EEQ) that might migrate to the soil was estimated to be 1.23 μg/kg. Based on the estimated application rate of manure, 38% of the fertilizers risk quotients exceeded 0.1, indicating medium to high risks pressure on terrestrial organisms. Nonetheless, the estrogenic risk was lower in manure-based fertilizers than in manure. This study highlights the significance of proper treatment of livestock manure and designing an optimal manure fertilization strategy to mitigate the risks posed by SEs and XEs to the agroecosystems.

Socioeconomic and seasonal effects on spatiotemporal trends in estrogen occurrence and ecological risk within a river across low-urbanized and high-husbandry landscapes

Estrogen pollution is a persistent issue in rivers. This study investigated the occurrence, spatiotemporal variation mechanisms, sources, and ecological risks of estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), diethylstilbestrol (DES), and bisphenol-A (BPA) in the waters of the Zijiang River, a tributary of the middle Yangtze River. The results revealed elevated detection frequencies and estrogen concentrations in the dry season compared to the wet season, mainly due to the precipitation dilution effect. Total estrogen concentration ranged from 21.2 to 97.5 ng/L in the dry season, which was significantly correlated to spatial distributions of animal husbandry and population. Among the estrogens studied in the river, E2, BPA, and EE2 were predominant. The collective sources of E1, E2, E3, and EE2 were traced back to human and husbandry excrement, whereas BPA emitted from daily life products, contributing to 55.5% and 42.7% of the total estrogen concentration, respectively. Particularly, the average and median E1, E2, and EE2 concentrations in the river exceeded the environmental quality standards of the European Union. The total estrogenic activity dominated by EE2 exceeded the 1 ng E2/L threshold, with levels exceeding 10 ng E2/L during the dry season. The risk quotients exhibited a high ecological risk of E1 and EE2 to fish and a moderate to high ecological risk of E1 to crustaceans, EE2 to mollusks, and E2 to fish. Therefore, E1, E2, and EE2 pollution of the river may lead to both high estrogenic potency and moderate or high ecological risk; thus, they should be considered priority pollutants in the river. These results yield valuable insights into the spatiotemporal change mechanisms, sources, and ecological risks of estrogens in river water of low-urbanization and rural watersheds.

Responses of biological traits of macrobenthic fauna to a eutrophication gradient in a semi-enclosed bay, China

The impacts of eutrophication on benthic ecological functions are of increasing concern in recent years. In order to assess the response of macrobenthic fauna to increasing eutrophication, two field sampling surveys were conducted during the summer (July-August 2020) and autumn (October-November 2020) from offshore, nearshore to estuarine sediments in Bohai Bay, northern China. Biological trait analysis was employed for the assessment of macrofaunal samples. The results indicated that there was an increase in the proportion of benthic burrowering or tube-dwelling sediment feeders and taxa with higher larval dispersal ability, but a decrease in the proportion of taxa showing high motility in areas with higher nutrient levels. Seasonal differences were also noted in the shift in biological traits, with a significantly lower similarity among the sampling areas in summer and a higher proportion of carnivorous taxa in autumn. The findings suggested that long-term disturbance can lead to the dominance of smaller body-sized benthic species and reduced sediment quality, impeding ecological recovery of benthic organisms under such harsh environment.

Endocrine disrupting effect and reproductive toxicity of the separate exposure and co-exposure of nano-polystyrene and diethylstilbestrol to zebrafish

The co-occurrence of nanoplastics and other pollutants in the environment has gotten a lot of attention, but information on the biological toxicity of their co-exposure was limited. This study aims to reveal the endocrine disrupting effect and reproductive toxicity of nano-polystyrene (NPS) and diethylstilbestrol (DES) to zebrafish under separate and combined exposure. Results indicated that NPS and DES exposure in isolation reduced the hepatosomatic index and gonadosomatic index, and altered the cell maturity in gonads in both cases. Even worse, the co-exposure of NPS and DES exacerbated the damage to the liver and gonads of fish. The two pollutants individually inhibited the secretion of sex hormones and vitellogenin. The inhibition effect of DES was especially dose-dependent, while NPS had weaker effect than DES. Their combined action on the secretion of sex hormones and vitellogenin exhibited additive effect. However, NPS did not affect the content of thyroid hormones in fish, and also had no significant effect on the reduction of thyroid hormone caused by DES exposure. Furthermore, their co-exposure decreased the cumulative eggs from 1031 to 306, and the spawning number from 12 to 8. The fertilization rate and hatchability rete of eggs were reduced by 30.9% and 40.4%, respectively. The abnormality rate of embryos was 65.0%, significantly higher than in separate DES and NPS groups (55.7% and 30.8% respectively). The abnormal development of offspring was mainly pericardial cyst, spinal curvature, and growth retardation.

Ecological risk assessment associated with five endocrine-disrupting compounds in wastewater treatment plants of Northeast Mexico

The ecological risk associated with five endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) was studied in four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Monterrey, Mexico. The EDCs, 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (4NP), and 4-tert-octylphenol (4TOP) were determined by SPE/GC-MS method, where EE2 and 4TOP were the most abundant in effluents at levels from 1.6 - 26.8 ng/L (EE2) and < LOD - 5.0 ng/L (4TOP), which corroborate that the wastewater discharges represent critical sources of EDCs to the aquatic environments. In this study, the potential risk associated with selected EDCs was assessed through the risk quotients (RQs) and by estimating the estrogenic activity (expressed as EEQ). This study also constitutes the first approach for the ecological risk assessment in effluents of WWTPs in Northeast Mexico. The results demonstrated that the effluents of the WWTPs represent a high risk for the organisms living in the receiving water bodies because the residual estrogens effect E2 and EE2 with RQ values up to 49.1 and 1165.2. EEQ values between 6.3 and 24.6 ngEE2/L were considered the most hazardous compounds among the target EDCs, capable of causing some alterations in the endocrine system of aquatic and terrestrial organisms due to chronic exposition.

Transcriptomic Analysis of Diethylstilbestrol in Daphnia Magna: Energy Metabolism and Growth Inhibition

With the widespread use of diethylstilbestrol (DES), it has become a common contaminant in the aquatic environment. It is toxic to a wide range of aquatic organisms, disrupting the water flea growth and further interfering with several ecosystem services. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanism of DES in water fleas is still unexplicit. In this study, the 21-day chronic test showed that a negative effect of growth and reproduction can be observed with DES exposure. Subsequently applied transcriptomic analysis illustrated the molecular mechanism in mode freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna (D. magna) exposed to 2, 200, and 1000 μg·L^-1 of DES for 9 days. Meanwhile, exposure to DES at 200 and 1000 μg·L^-1 significantly restrains the growth (body length) and reproduction (first spawning time) of D. magna. Identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are majorly enriched relative to energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, the digestive system, transport and catabolism pathways which were remarkably changed. These repressed and up-regulated pathways, in relation to energy synthesis and metabolism, may be the reasons for the reduced body length and delayed first spawning time. Taken together, this study revealed that DES is a threat to D. magna in the aquatic environment and clarifies the molecular mechanism of the toxicity.

A Comparison Study between Wood Flour and Its Derived Biochar for the Enhancement of the Peroxydisulfate Activation Capability of Fe3O4

In this study, both wood flour (WF) and wood flour-derived biochar (WFB) were used as supports for Fe3O4 to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS). The role of different carriers was investigated emphatically from the aspects of catalyst properties, the degradation kinetics of bisphenol A (BPA), the effects of important parameters, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Results showed that both WF and WFB could serve as good support for Fe3O4, which could control the release of iron into solution and increase the specific surface areas (SSAs). The WFB/Fe3O4 had stronger PDS activation capability than WF/Fe3O4 mainly due to the larger SSA of WFB/Fe3O4 and the PDS activation ability of WFB. Both radical species (•OH and SO4•−) and non-radical pathways, including 1O2 and high-valent iron-oxo species, contributed to the degradation of BPA in the WFB/Fe3O4–PDS process. Moreover, the WFB/Fe3O4 catalyst also showed stronger ability to control the iron release, better reusability, and higher BPA mineralization efficiency than WF/Fe3O4.

Genome and transcriptome of Chinese medaka (Oryzias sinensis) and its uses as a model fish for evaluating estrogenicity of surface water

Ecological toxicity assessments of contaminants in aquatic environments are of great concern. However, a dilemma in ecological toxicity assessments often arises when linking the effects found in model animals in the laboratory and the phenomena observed in wild fishes in the field due to species differences. Chinese medaka (Oryzias sinensis), widely distributed in East Asia, is a satisfactory model animal to assess aquatic environment in China. Here, we domesticated this species and assembled its genome (814 Mb) using next-generation sequencing (NGS). A total of 21,922 high-confidence genes with 41,306 transcripts were obtained and annotated, and their expression patterns in tissues were determined by RNA-sequencing. Six mostly sensitive biomarker genes, including vtg1, vtg3, vtg6, zp3a.2, zp2l1, and zp2.3 to estrogen exposure were screened and validated in the fish exposed to concentrations of estrone (E₁), 17β-estradiol (E₂), and estriol (E₃) under laboratory condition. Field investigations were then performed to evaluating the gene expression of biomarkers in wild Chinese medaka and levels of E₁, E₂, and E₃ in the fish habitats. It was found that in 40 sampling sites, the biomarker genes were obviously highly expressed in the wild fish from about half sites, and the detection frequencies of E₁, E₂, and E₃, were 97.5%, 42.5%, and 45% with mean concentrations of 82.48, 43.17, 52.69 ng/L, respectively. Correlation analyses of the biomarker gene expressions in the fish with the estrogens levels which were converted to EEQs showed good correlation, indicating that the environmental estrogens and estrogenicity of the surface water might adversely affect wild fishes. Finally, histologic examination of gonads in male wild Chinese medaka was performed and found the presence of intersex in the fish. This study facilitated the uses of Chinese medaka as a model animal for ecotoxicological studies.

Manganese redox cycling in immobilized bioreactors for simultaneous removal of nitrate and 17β-estradiol: Performance, mechanisms and community assembly potential

The application of bio-manganese (Mn) redox cycling for continuous removal of contaminants provides promise for addressing coexisting contaminants in groundwater, however, the feasibility of constructing Mn redox cycling system (MCS) through community assembly remains to be elucidated. In this study, Mn-reducing strain MFG10 and Mn-oxidizing strain MFQ7 synergistically removed 94.67 % of 17β-estradiol (E2) within 12 h. Analysis of potential variations in Mn oxides suggested that MCS accelerated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Mn(III), which interacted to promote E2 removal. After continuous operation of the Mn ore-based immobilized bioreactor for 270 days, the experimental group (EG) achieved average removal efficiencies of 89.63 % and 97.57 % for NO₃^--N and E2, respectively. High-throughput sequencing results revealed complex symbiotic relationships in EG. Community assembly significantly enhanced the metabolic and physiological activity of the bioreactor, which promoting the expression of core functions including nitrogen metabolism, Mn cycling and organic matter resistance.

Investigation of free and conjugated estrogen fate and emission coefficients in three duck farms

Concentration animal feeding operation (CAFO) is an important source of environmental estrogen. However, to the best of our knowledge, the data on estrogen discharge during duck breeding and growth is insufficient. This study used liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) to analyze the free and conjugated estrogen concentrations in the surface water, outlet water, groundwater, and duck manure/soil mixture at three duck farms in Taiwan. Natural estrogen species included estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), estrone-3-sulfate (E1-3S), 17β-estradiol-3-sulfate (E2-3S), estrone-3-glucuronide (E1-3G), and 17β-estradiol-3-glucuronide (E2-3G), whereas synthetic estrogen included 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) and diethylstilbestrol (DES). This study showed that the total estrogen concentrations in the surface water and groundwater were 15.4 and 4.5 ng/L, respectively, which constituted 56% and 58%, respectively, conjugated estrogen. From the pond to the outlet water, the total estrogen concentration decreased by 3.9 ng/L (23% loss) in the duck farms. However, the estrogenic potency was slightly reduced from 0.91 to 0.88 E2 equivalent/L, showing a negligible decrease. From the pond to the outlet water, the field results showed that converting the conjugated estrogen into free estrogen in the duck farm-released water increased their environmental hazard. Primarily E1, with an average concentration of 0.9 ± 1.6 ng/g, was present in the duck manure. The estrogen excreted by the ducks in the pond (from surface water to outlet water) was estimated to be 0.18 kg/million head-year. Although the estrogen concentration in the duck farms was low, the environmental impact of CAFO should not be neglected.

Mechanism of 17β-estradiol degradation by Rhodococcus equi via the 4,5-seco pathway and its key genes

Steroid estrogens have been detected in oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwaters, soils, and even urban water supply systems, thereby inevitably imposing serious impacts on human health and ecological safety. Indeed, many estrogen-degrading bacterial strains and degradation pathways have been reported, with the 4,5-seco pathway being particularly important. However, few studies have evaluated the use of the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes to degrade 17β-estradiol (E2). In this study, 5 genes involved in E2 degradation were identified in the Rhodococcus equi DSSKP-R-001 (R-001) genome and then heterologously expressed to confirm their functions. The transformation of E2 with hsd17b14 reached 63.7% within 30 h, resulting in transformation into estrone (E1). Furthermore, we found that At1g12200-encoded flavin-binding monooxygenase (FMO_At1g12200) can transform E1 at a rate of 51.6% within 30 h and can transform E1 into 4-hydroxyestrone (4-OH E1). In addition, catA and hsaC genes were identified to further transform 4-OH E1 at a rate of 97-99%, and this reaction was accomplished by C-C cleavage at the C4 position of the A ring of 4-OH E1. This study represents the first report on the roles of these genes in estrogen degradation and provides new insights into the mechanisms of microbial estrogen metabolism and a better understanding of E2 degradation via the 4,5-seco pathway by actinomycetes.

Sexual hormones in a coastal river adjacent to the Bohai Sea: Characteristic pollutants and dominantly influencing factors

Characteristic sexual hormones (SHs) and the factors that dominantly influence their occurrence in coastal ecosystems are less understood. This study verified the relationships between SHs and environmental factors and further inferred the possible controlling mechanisms of SH distribution. A characteristic pollutant of SHs was first proposed by determining the contamination level and ecological risks of SHs (seven species) in a coastal river adjacent to the Bohai Sea. The results showed that the 17β-oestradiol (17β-E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) had high mean concentrations of 11.20 (±1.31), 10.17 (±4.91), and 16.71 (±0.88) ng L^-1, respectively, in the river water. The concentration of estrone (E1) was positively related to microbial substances of DOMs (p < 0.05). The humification index (HIX) had a negative relationship with E3 (p < 0.05). In water, the distribution of total SHs was regulated by the HIX and fluorescence index (FI), which might be related to photodegradation reactions. The 17α-oestradiol (17α-E2) and EE2 were related to humified organic matter, while E3 and androstenedione (ADD) were influenced by sewage input. The 17β-E2, E1, and 17α-E2 may be derived from animal sources, while E3, ADD, EE2, and progesterone were from human activities. Oestrogens, including E1, 17α-E2, 17β-E2, and EE2, displayed higher ecological risks than androgens and progesterone, with medium to high risk in most sites. The 17β-E2 was regarded as a characteristic pollutant of SHs throughout the river system, which displayed the highest risk. This paper may provide a reference for SH risk management and control.

Species and functional diversity of marine macrobenthic community and benthic habitat quality assessment in semi-enclosed waters upon recovering from eutrophication, Bohai Bay, China

This study investigated the structure and function of macrobenthic community in Bohai Bay upon improvement of water quality due to pollution abatement. A total of 166 species were collected in the summer and autumn sampling, with an increase in sensitive species recorded as compared to data from previous studies. While historical variations in species richness indicated signs of improvement in community structure, results of functional diversity indices revealed that the macrobenthic community in Bohai Bay was still in an early stage of recovery. From BIO-ENV analysis, habitat instability may hinder how community responded to water quality improvement. Results of the benthic habitat quality assessment also indicated that the ecological status in most areas of Bohai Bay was classified as good, while a few estuarine regions were categorized in a poor status.

Fate, occurrence, and removal of estrogens in livestock wastewaters

During the last decades, livestock and animal feeding operations have been expanded. In parallel, these activities are among the major sources of estrogens in the environment. Thus, considering the environmental and health risks associated with estrogenic compounds, this work reviews the fate, occurrence, and removal of free and conjugated E1, E2, and E3 in livestock wastewaters. A systematic literature review was carried out, and after applying the eligibility criteria, 66 peer-reviewed papers were selected. Results suggest high estrogen concentrations and, consequently, high estrogenic activity, especially in samples from swine farming. E1 and E2 are frequently found in wastewaters from bovine, swine, and other livestock effluents. Aerobic treatment processes were more efficient for estrogen removal, whereas anaerobic systems seem poorly effective. Removal efficiencies of estrogens and estrogenic activity of up to 90% were reported for constructed wetlands, advanced pond systems, trickling filters, membrane bioreactors, aerated and nitrifying reactors, combined air flotation, and vegetable oil capture processes. High concentrations found in wastewaters from livestock allied to the removal efficiencies reported for anaerobic processes (usually used to treat livestock wastewaters) evidence the importance of monitoring these compounds in environmental matrices.

Twelve natural estrogens in urines of six threatened or endangered mammalian species in Zoo Park: implications and their potential risk

This work was the first to report twelve natural estrogens (NEs) in the urines of six threatened or endangered mammalians in a Zoo Park of Guangzhou (i.e., panda, gorilla, elephant, African lion, jaguar, and leopard). Ten out of twelve NEs were detected at least in one urine sample of the six mammalians studied, including the four major NEs (i.e., estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-estradiol (αE2), estriol (E3)), and six other NEs (i.e., 4-hydroxyestrone (4OHE1), 2-hydroxyestradiol (2OHE2), 4-hydroxyestradiol (4OHE2), 16α-hydroxyestrone (16α-OHE1), 16ketoestradiol (16ketoE2), and 17epiestriol (17epiE3)). The six studied mammalians, ranked in the order of high to low urinary concentration of total NEs, were jaguar, African lion, gorilla, elephant, panda, and leopard, with respective urinary concentrations of 110.4, 86.4, 71.4, 66.0, 55.9, and 52.8 ng/mL. According to the average urinary concentration of NE in the six mammalians ranked from high to low, the top five NEs detected were 16α-OHE1, 4OHE1, E1, E3, and 17epiE3, respectively. These clearly indicated the occurrence of NEs other than the four major types in urines of animals in a Zoo Park. Moreover, the daily excretion rates of the five detected NEs by one elephant ranged from 1162-2254 μg/d with a total daily excretion rate of 8260 μg/d, suggesting that the total urinary excretion of NEs by one adult elephant was equivalent to that by 170 premenopausal women or 506 adult men. Consequently, it appears from this study that NEs in the urines of zoo animals should be considered an emerging source of NEs.

Chemical and biological assessments of environmental mixtures: A review of current trends, advances, and future perspectives

Considering the chemical complexity and toxicity data gaps of environmental mixtures, most studies evaluate the chemical risk individually. However, humans are usually exposed to a cocktail of chemicals in real life. Mixture health assessment remains to be a research area having significant knowledge gaps. Characterization of chemical composition and bioactivity/toxicity are the two critical aspects of mixture health assessments. This review seeks to introduce the recent progress and tools for the chemical and biological characterization of environmental mixtures. The state-of-the-art techniques include the sampling, extraction, rapid detection methods, and the in vitro, in vivo, and in silico approaches to generate the toxicity data of an environmental mixture. Application of these novel methods, or new approach methodologies (NAMs), has increased the throughput of generating chemical and toxicity data for mixtures and thus refined the mixture health assessment. Combined with computational methods, the chemical and biological information would shed light on identifying the bioactive/toxic components in an environmental mixture.

Emerging Pollutants in Wastewater, Advanced Oxidation Processes as an Alternative Treatment and Perspectives

Emerging pollutants are present in wastewaters treated by conventional processes. Due to water cycle interactions, these contaminants have been reported in groundwater, surface water, and drinking waters. Since conventional processes cannot guarantee their removal or biotransformation, it is necessary to study processes that comply with complete elimination. The current literature review was conducted to describe and provide an overview of the available information about the most significant groups of emerging pollutants that could potentially be found in the wastewater and the environment. In addition, it describes the main entry and distribution pathways of emerging contaminants into the environment through the water and wastewater cycle, as well as some of the potential effects they may cause to flora, fauna, and humans. Relevant information on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its potential spread through wastewater is included. Furthermore, it also outlines some of the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) used for the total or partial emerging pollutants removal, emphasizing the reaction mechanisms and process parameters that need to be considered. As well, some biological processes that, although slow, are effective for the biotransformation of some emerging contaminants and can be used in combination with advanced oxidation processes.

Bioaugmented removal of 17β-estradiol, nitrate and Mn(II) by polypyrrole@corn cob immobilized bioreactor: Performance optimization, mechanism, and microbial community response

The coexistence of nitrate and endocrine substances (EDCs) in groundwater is of global concern. Herein, an efficient and stable polypyrrole@corn cob (PPy@Corn cob) bioreactor immobilized with Zoogloea sp. was designed for the simultaneous removal of 17β-estradiol (E2), nitrate and Mn(II). After 225 days of continuous operation, the optimal operating parameters and enhanced removal mechanism were explored, also the long-term toxicity and microbial communities response mechanisms under E2 stress were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of E2, nitrate, and Mn(II) were 84.21, 82.96, and 47.91%, respectively, at the optimal operating conditions with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h, pH of 6.5 and Mn(II) concentration of 20 mg L^-1. Further increased of initial E2 (2 and 3 mg L^-1) resulted in the inhibiting effect of denitrification and manganese oxidation, but excellent E2 removal efficiencies maintained, which were associated with the formation and continuous accumulation of biomanganese oxides (BMO). Characterization analysis of biological precipitation demonstrated that adsorption and redox conversion on the BMO surface played key roles in the removal of E2. In addition, different levels of E2 exposure are decisive factors in community evolution, and bioaugmented bacterial communities with Zoogloea as the core group can dynamically adapt to E2 stress. This study offers the possibility to better utilize microbial metabolism and to advance opportunities that depend on microbial physiology and material characterization applications.

17α-ethynylestradiol and its two main conjugates in seven municipal wastewater treatment plants: Analytical method, their occurrence, removal and risk evaluation

This work shows the existence of both 17-ethinylestradiol-3-sulfate (EE2-3S) and 17-ethinylestradiol-3-glucuronide (EE2-3G) in seven municipal WWTPs with substantial concentrations (n.d-50.10 ng/L). The calculated removal efficiencies of 17-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in the seven municipal WWTPs ranged from 40.8%-100% with an average removal efficiency of 83.3%. However, upon the inclusion of EE2 concentration transformed from EE2-3S and EE2-3G, the corresponding removal efficiencies were increased to 91.4%-100% with an average removal efficiency of 97.3%. This work is the first to clearly illustrate that EE2 conjugates in raw wastewater could greatly underestimate the removal effectiveness of municipal WWTPs on EE2, indicating the importance of the EE2 conjugates in municipal wastewater having been hardly paid with attention. The EE2-derived estrogen equivalence (EEQ) values in the effluents of seven WWTPs ranged from 0 to 0.98 ng E2/L having an average level of 0.45 ng E2/L, which were relatively low. However, upon the inclusion of EE2 transformable from EE2-3S and EE2-3G in effluents, the EE2-derived EEQ values in effluents would be increased to 0.77-4.85 ng E2/L having an average level of 2.71 ng E2/L, which clearly suggested that ignorance of EE2 conjugates in effluent would largely underestimate EE2's environmental risk to receiving water bodies.

Suppression mechanism of model humic constituents on laccase-enabled 17β-estradiol oxidation and oligomerization

Humic constituents (HCs) are ubiquitous in the aquatic ecosystems, and contain various functional groups that seriously impact the conversion of 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) by fungal laccase. The purpose of this study was to explore the influencing mechanism of HCs on Trametes versicolor laccase-enabled 17β-E2 oxidation and oligomerization. Herein, T. versicolor-secreted laccase could rapidly convert 99.2% of 17β-E2 (rate constant = 3.7 × 10^-2 min^-1, half-life = 18.7 min) into multifarious oligomers at 25 °C and pH 5.0, by phenolic radical-caused C-C and/or C-O self-linking routes, whereas HCs with O-phenolic hydroxyl groups (O-p-OH, i.e., catechol, pyrogallol, gallic acid, and caffeic acid) dramatically suppressed 17β-E2 oligomerization. Compared with HC-free, 17β-E2 rate constants weakened 6.3-15.8 fold in the presence of HCs containing O-p-OH. It is largely because the O-p-OH was preferentially oxidized by T. versicolor laccase to create the electrophilic O-quinone monomers/oligomers. These unstable reactive O-quinone intermediates strongly reversed 17β-E2 phenolic radicals to their monomeric molecules via two proton-transfer versus two electron-transfer channels, thus intercepting 17β-E2 oxidation and oligomerization. These findings highlight new insights into the effect of HCs containing O-p-OH on T. versicolor laccase-started 17β-E2 conversion, which is beneficial to re-understanding the fate and geochemical behavior of 17β-E2 in water.

Environmental estrogens in surface water and their interaction with microalgae: A review

Environmental estrogens (EEs) have received extensive attention because they interfere with biological endocrine and reproduction systems by mimicking, antagonizing, or otherwise affecting the actions of endogenous hormones. Additionally, harmful algal blooms have become a global problem in surface water. Microalgae, as an essential primary producer, is especially important for aquatic life and the entire ecosystem. The presence of EEs in surface water may be a potential promoting factor for algal blooms, and microalgae may have effects on the degradation of EEs. This review focuses on the distribution and pollution characteristics of EEs in global surface waters, effects of single and mixed EEs on microalgae regarding growth and toxin production, mechanisms of EEs on microalgae at the cellular and molecular level. The impacts of microalgae on EEs were also discussed. This review provides a risk assessment of EEs and identifies essential clues that will aid in formulating and revising the relevant standards of surface water regarding EEs, which is significant for ecosystems and human health.

Metabolism analysis of 17α-ethynylestradiol by Pseudomonas citronellolis SJTE-3 and identification of the functional genes

Synthetic estrogens are the most hazardous and persistent environmental estrogenic contaminants, with few reports on their biodegradation. Pseudomonas citronellolis SJTE-3 degraded natural steroids efficiently and metabolized 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) with the addition of different easily used energy sources (glucose, peptone, ethanol, yeast extract, fulvic acid and ammonia). Over 92% of EE2 (1 mg/L) and 55% of EE2 (10 mg/L) in culture were removed in seven days with the addition of 0.1% ethanol, and the EE2-biotransforming efficiency increased with the increasing ethanol concentrations. Two novel intermediate metabolites of EE2 (C₂₂H₂₂O and C₁₈H₃₄O₂) were identified with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and GC-Orbitrap/MS. Comparative analysis and genome mining revealed strain SJTE-3 contained a unique genetic basis for EE2 metabolism, and the putative EE2-degrading genes exhibited dispersed distribution. The EE2 metabolism of strain SJTE-3 was inducible and the transcription of eight genes were significantly induced by EE2. Three genes (sdr3, yjcH and cyp2) encoding a short-chain dehydrogenase, a membrane transporter and a cytochrome P450 hydroxylase, respectively, were vital for EE2 metabolism in strain SJTE-3; their over-expression accelerated EE2 metabolic processes and advanced the generation of intermediate metabolites. This work could promote the study of bacterial EE2 metabolism mechanisms and facilitate efficient bioremediation for EE2 pollution.

Influence of land use type and urbanization level on the distribution of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and risk assessment in Beiyun River, China

Influence of land use type and urbanization level on the distribution of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from the developed regions of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei in the northern China was evaluated. The seasonal and spatial variations of the 22 target PPCPs were analyzed in the 63 sampling sites along the whole Beiyun River Basin. Results showed that the total PPCPs concentration had a wide variation range, from 132 ng L^-1 to 25474 ng L^-1. Spatial interpolation analysis showed that agricultural land presented higher PPCPs contamination level than build-up land (p < 0.05) and the concentration was negatively correlated with urbanization level. Source apportionment showed the untreated sewage source contributed to 34%-53% of the PPCPs burden in the Beiyun River. Risk assessment indicated that diethyltoluamide, carbamazepine, octocrylene, gemfibrozil and triclocarban had high risks (RQ > 1), and small tributaries had the highest mixed risk (MRQ = 34). Species sensitivity distribution combined with the safety threshold method showed that PPCPs would have potential risk on aquatic organisms even at very low concentrations and triclocarban posed the highest risk in the Beiyun River.

Ecological and human health risks of manure-borne steroid estrogens: A 20-year global synthesis study

Estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), and estriol (E3) are persistent in livestock manure and present serious pollution concerns because they can trigger endocrine disruption at part-per-trillion levels. This study conducted a global analysis of estrogen occurrence in manure using all literature data over the past 20 years. Besides, predicted environmental concentration (PEC) in soil and water was estimated using fate models, and risk/harm quotient (RQ/HQ) methods were applied to screen risks on children as well as on sensitive aquatic and soil species. The estradiol equivalent values ranged from 6.6 to 4.78 × 10⁴ ng/g and 12.4 to 9.46 × 10⁴ ng/L in the solid and liquid fraction. The estrogenic potency ranking in both fractions were 17β-E2> E1>17α-E2>E3. RQs of measured environmental concentration in the liquid fraction pose medium (E3) to high risk (E1, 17α-E2 & 17β-E2) to fish but are lower than risks posed by xenoestrogens. However, the RQ of PECs on both soil organisms and aquatic species were insignificant (RQ < 0.01), and HQs of contaminated water and soil ingestion were within acceptable limits. Nevertheless, meticulous toxicity studies are still required to confirm (or deny) the findings because endocrine disruption potency from mixtures of these classes of compounds cannot be ignored.

Human health risk assessment of selected pharmaceuticals in the five major river basins, China

Pharmaceuticals in aquatic environment have raised wide attention in recent years due to their potential adverse effects and bioaccumulation in biota. China has been a major producer and consumer of pharmaceuticals, however, the potential human health risk of these chemicals is yet to be determined in China. In this study, we evaluated available exposure data for twenty pharmaceuticals in surface waters from Chinese five major river basins (the Yangtze, Haihe, Pearl, Songliao, and Yellow River Basins), and human health risk assessment was performed. Based on the concentration data and risk data, we conducted research on the source, cause, and control measures of the pharmaceuticals. The twenty pharmaceuticals were found to be ubiquitous in China with median concentrations between 0.09 and 304 ng/L. The estimated daily intake of pharmaceuticals from drinking water and eating fish was calculated. The intake via drinking water was significantly lower than that via eating fish. The risk quotients via water intake and fish consumption ranged from 0 to 17.2, with estrogen and sulfapyridine highest among the twenty pharmaceuticals. High risks of exposure were mainly in North China, including the Haihe and Songliao River Basins. This is the first analysis in Chinese major river basins that has filled the gaps in the research on the human health risks of pharmaceuticals. The results of the study provide basic information of pharmaceutical intake from drinking water and eating fish in China and provide insights into the risk management guidance of pharmaceuticals, and will facilitate the optimization of health advisories and policy making.

Removal efficiencies and risk assessment of endocrine-disrupting chemicals at two wastewater treatment plants in South China

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an important pollutant sources of the aquatic system. In this study, the removal efficiencies of eight typical EDCs at two domestic WWTPs in Dongguan City, China, are reported based on instrumental analysis and bioassay results. Bioactivities, including steroidogenesis-disrupting effects, estrogen receptor (ER)-binding activity, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-binding activity were evaluated using the H295R, MVLN, and H4IIE cell bioassays, respectively. The potential environmental risks of these residual EDCs were also evaluated. The results of instrumental analysis showed that nonylphenol was the major chemical type present among the eight tested EDCs. Meanwhile, concentrations of estrogen compounds including estrone, 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, and diethylstilbestrol were relatively low. The removal rates of all eight EDCs were relatively high. Although the chemical analysis indicated high removal efficiency, the bioassay results showed that steroidogenesis-disrupting effects as well as ER-binding and AhR-binding activities remained, with E2-equivalent values of effluent samples ranging from 0.16 to 0.9 ng·L^-1, and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin-equivalent values ranging from 0.61 to 4.09 ng L^-1. Principal component analysis combined with regression analysis suggests that the chemicals analyzed in this study were partly responsible for these ER and AhR activities. Ecological risk assessment of the residual EDCs showed that estrone was the most hazardous chemical among the eight EDCs tested, with a risk quotient of 1.44-5.50. Overall, this study suggests that, despite high apparent removal efficiencies of typical EDCs, their bioactivities and potential ecological risks cannot be ignored.

Efficient removal of estrogenic compounds in water by MnIII-activated peroxymonosulfate: Mechanisms and application in sewage treatment plant water

In this paper, the degradation of three endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs): bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) by manganite (γ-MnOOH) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was investigated. Preliminary optimisation experiments showed that complete degradation of the three EDCs was achieved after 30 min of reaction using 0.1 g L^-1 of γ-MnOOH and 2 mM of PMS. The degradation rate constants were determined to be 0.20, 0.22 and 0.15 min^-1 for BPA, E2 and EE2, respectively. Combining radical scavenging approaches, Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, we revealed for the first time that about 40% of EDCs degradation can be attributed to heterogeneous electron transfer reaction involving freshly generated Mn(IV), and 60% to sulfate radical degradation pathway. The influence of various inorganic ions on the γ-MnOOH/PMS system indicated that removal efficiency was slightly affected by chloride and carbonate ions, while nitrate and nitrite ions had negligible impacts. The application of γ-MnOOH/PMS system in real sewage treatment plant water (STPW) showed that degradation rate constants of EDCs decreased to 0.035-0.048 min^-1 and complete degradation of the three EDCs after 45 min. This study provides new insights into the reactivity of combined γ-MnOOH and PMS, and opens new ways for the application of Mn-bearing species in wastewater treatment technologies.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in a typical urbanized bay of Yellow Sea, China: Distribution, risk assessment, and identification of priority pollutants

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water are receiving particular attention as they pose adverse effects on aquatic systems, even at trace concentrations. A comprehensive study was conducted on 14 EDCs (five estrogens and nine household and personal care products (HPCPs)) in the water of the urbanized Jiaozhou Bay in the Yellow Sea during summer and winter. Results showed that the total concentration of 14 EDCs ranged from 100 to 658 ng L^-1 and 56.7-212 ng L^-1 in the estuarine and bay water, respectively. The average total concentration of five estrogens in summer was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that in winter due to the higher precipitation dilution and degradations during summer, whereas the average total concentration of nine HPCPs was significantly (p < 0.05) higher during the summer than that during the winter because of the higher usage and emissions during the summer. Estrogens and HPCPs were dominated by 17α-ethinylestradiol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), respectively. High PHBA concentrations may be related to the hydrolysis of parabens. The total concentrations of EDCs were higher in the eastern coastal seawater of the bay due to the strong influence of domestic and industrial wastewater discharge. Estrogens may interfere with the endocrine system of aquatic organisms in the bay because the total estradiol equivalent concentration exceeded 1 ng L^-1. 17α-ethinylestradiol was the main contributor to the estrogenic activity. The EDC mixtures posed high risks (RQ > 1) to mollusks, crustaceans, and fish, and low to moderate risks (RQ < 1) to algae. Fish was the most sensitive aquatic taxon to the EDC mixtures. Given the concentration and frequency of EDCs, the optimized risk quotient method revealed that 17α-ethinylestradiol, estrone, triclocarban, triclosan, and 17β-estradiol should be prioritized in ecological management because of their high risks (prioritization index of >1).

Tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile-crosslinked β-cyclodextrin polymer as a binding agent of diffusive gradients in thin-films for sampling endocrine disrupting chemicals in water

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is an inexpensive and reproducible material derived from corn starch. It is possible that tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile-crosslinked β-cyclodextrin polymer (TFN-CD), a cheap but efficient adsorbent, could be a suitable binding agent for use in the passive sampling technique, diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT). Herein, the TFN-CD binding gel was prepared and then evaluated as the binding phase of DGT to sample six endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water. The TFN-CD dispersed uniformly in the binding gel due to its hydrophilicity. The quantitative recoveries (99.3%-106%) of EDCs from the TFN-CD binding gel could be conveniently achieved by ultrasonic extraction using 5 mL methanol for 10 min. Compared with the excellent HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced resin) binding gel, the TFN-CD binding gel had comparable or even faster adsorption kinetics, although the equilibrium adsorption capacity was slightly lower. The effective adsorption capacities of TFN-CD-based DGT (TFN-CD-DGT) were roughly estimated to enable a 7-days deployment in EDC solution of 25.7-30.0 μg L^-1. Studies of influencing factors showed that the ionic strength (0-0.5 M), pH (3.73-9.13), dissolved organic matter (0-20 mg L^-1) and long-term storage (204 days) had negligible influence on the performance of TFN-CD-DGT. Finally, the TFN-CD-DGT was successfully used to record sudden increases in bulk concentrations during simulated discharge events in pond water. These results demonstrate that TFN-CD is a suitable binding agent for sampling of EDCs, and the low cost of TFN-CD could be conducive to the application of DGT in large-scale sampling.

Benzophenones and synthetic progestin in wastewater and sediment from farms, WWTPs and receiving surface water: distribution, sources, and ecological risks

Farms and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important sources of endocrine disruptors, which may have potential adverse effects on the nearby receiving river and potential human health risks. Benzophenone (BPs) and synthetic progestin were determined in water and sediment samples of the discharge source and receiving river. BPs and synthetic progestin ranged from not detected (N.D.) to 400.53 ng L⁻¹ in water samples and from N.D. to 359.92 ng g⁻¹ dw in sediment, respectively, and benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and ethinyl estradiol (EE2) were the main detected objects. Correlation analysis showed that pollutants discharged from livestock farms were the main contributor to the receiving river. The distribution of pollutants in different regions was related to higher population density and livestock activities. Predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) were investigated for ecological risk assessment in the study area, and 86% of the samples exceeded the baseline value of chronic toxicity. Benzophenone-1 (BP-1), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-OH-BP) and benzophenone (BP) were identified as the main substances that caused medium risk in the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, BPs and synthetic progesterone should be given more attention in the future.

The occurrence, source and ecological risk of BPs and synthetic progestin in farms, WWTPs and their receiving river were investigated.

Pollution characteristics and mixture risk prediction of phenolic environmental estrogens in rivers of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, China

Phenolic environmental estrogens (PEEs) are ubiquitous in most rivers worldwide and may cause potential endocrine-disrupting effects in aquatic organisms. Three typical PEEs (bisphenol A, BPA; 4-tert-octylphenol,4-t-OP; and nonylphenol, NP) were investigated in the rivers of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, which is the most urbanized and industrialized area in North China. The target PEEs were detected in 100% of river water samples, and the concentrations ranged from 23 to 255 ng L^-1. The concentrations of NP in most river sections were higher than those of BPA and 4-t-OP. The spatiotemporal variations in PEEs indicated that both domestic and industrial wastewater were main sources of PEEs in river water. In addition, rainfall runoff might be an important source of PEEs in the receiving waters, especially in the wet season. The ecotoxicological risk assessment of individual PEE revealed a moderate to high risk for aquatic organisms at most sampling sites. The mixture risk prediction based on the concentration addition method indicated a potential cumulative risk of PEEs in the study area, highlighting the importance of mixture risk assessment in the aquatic environment.

A review of 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in surface water across 32 countries: Sources, concentrations, and potential estrogenic effects

17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen with very strong estrogenic potency. Due to its wide usage in human and livestock as well as its high recalcitration to biodegradation, it was ubiquitous in different environment. This review summarized EE2 concentration levels in surface waters among 32 countries across seven continents. EE2 concentrations varied greatly in different surface waters, which ranged from not detected to 17,112 ng/L. The top 10 countries ranked in the order of high to low average EE2 concentration in surface water, were Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Laos, Brazil, Argentina, Kuwait, Thailand, Indonesia and Portugal, with the respective mean concentrations of 27.7, 22.1, 21.5, 21.1, 13.6, 9.6, 9.5, 8.8, 7.6 and 6.6 ng/L. Generally speaking, the EE2 concentration levels in surface waters in developing countries were much higher than those in developed countries. EE2 in effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was the dominant source to most countries, which suggested that improving the EE2 removal performance of municipal WWTP is the key to mitigate EE2 contamination to surface water body. Livestock, hospital, pharmacy factory and aquaculture wastewaters were also the important sources, but further work should be performed to elucidate their contribution. Evaluation based on estrogenic effects, the EE2-derived estrogen equivalence in surface waters ranged from 0 to 33 ng E2/L, among which about 65% of surface waters among 32 countries were at risk or high risk, indicating global serious EE2 contamination. MAIN FINDING: EE2 concentration in surface waters across 32 countries were summarized, along which its potential estrogenic effects were evaluated.

Non-conventional water reuse in agriculture: A circular water economy

Due to the growing and diverse demands on water supply, exploitation of non-conventional sources of water has received much attention. Since water consumption for irrigation is the major contributor to total water withdrawal, the utilization of non-conventional sources of water for the purpose of irrigation is critical to assuring the sustainability of water resources. Although numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate and manage non-conventional water sources, little research has reviewed the suitability of available water technologies for improving water quality, so that water reclaimed from non-conventional supplies could be an alternative water resource for irrigation. This article provides a systematic overview of all aspects of regulation, technology and management to enable the innovative technology, thereby promoting and facilitating the reuse of non-conventional water. The study first reviews the requirements for water quantity and quality (i.e., physical, chemical, and biological parameters) for agricultural irrigation. Five candidate sources of non-conventional water were evaluated in terms of quantity and quality, namely rainfall/stormwater runoff, industrial cooling water, hydraulic fracturing wastewater, process wastewater, and domestic sewage. Water quality issues, such as suspended solids, biochemical/chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total nitrogen, bacteria, and emerging contaminates, were assessed. Available technologies for improving the quality of non-conventional water were comprehensively investigated. The potential risks to plants, human health, and the environment posed by non-conventional water reuse for irrigation are also discussed. Lastly, three priority research directions, including efficient collection of non-conventional water, design of fit-for-purpose treatment, and deployment of energy-efficient processes, were proposed to provide guidance on the potential for future research.

Veterinary antibiotics and estrogen hormones in manures from concentrated animal feedlots and their potential ecological risks

The spread of pharmaceutically active chemicals (PACs), such as antibiotics and estrogenic hormones from animal manures can pose threats to the ecologic environment. In this work, animal manure samples were collected from 71 concentrated animal feedlots in Northern China and investigated for 24 antibiotics and 4 estrogenic hormones. Results showed that these micropollutants were ubiquitous in manures with the concentration ranges of undetectable (ND)-543,445 μg/kg (mean: 44,568 μg/kg) for antibiotics and ND-249.8 μg/kg (mean: 24.78 μg/kg) for estrogens. There was a significant variation in the amounts of PACs in different animal manures. The amounts of antibiotics in manures had following order: swine (83,177 μg/kg) >chicken (52,932 μg/kg) >beef (37,120 μg/kg) >dairy (305 μg/kg), while the estrogens in dairy (mean: 39.27 μg/kg) and chicken manures (mean: 40.08 μg/kg) were higher than those in beef (2.7 μg/kg) and swine manures (1.8 μg/kg). Based on the estimated farmland application rate of manure, antibiotics and estrogens may cause high ecological risks to terrestrial organisms according to the risk quotient evaluation. Estrogens could pose a relatively higher risk than antibiotics. The toxicological effects of antibiotics and estrogens to the terrestrial environment should receive more intensive study.

Occurrence and removal of 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in municipal wastewater treatment plants: Current status and challenges

As a synthetic estrogen, 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) has been known to show the strong estrogenic potency. This work critically reviewed the occurrence and removal of EE2 in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Based on the on-site investigations from 282 municipal WWTPs across 29 countries, the concentrations of EE2 in influent and effluent ranged from n.d-7890 and n.d-549 ng/L, with respective average concentrations of 78.4 and 12.3 ng/L. The average effluent concentration of EE2 was more than 61 times higher than the reported lowest-observed-effect concentration, indicating an urgent need for removing EE2 in WWTPs. The calculated removal efficiencies of EE2 in different wastewater treatment processes varied from -100%-100%. Averagely, 47.5% of EE2 was removed in the primary treatment process, 55.3% by biological filter treatment, 59.4% by lagoon and 71.5% by activated sludge process. The observed removal of EE2 in municipal WWTP could be mainly attributed to adsorption and biodegradation, which could be predicted according to its solid-water distribution coefficients and biodegradation rate constants. However, it should be noted that the predicted removal of EE2 was found to deviate from the in-plant observation, likely attributing to the existence of EE2 conjugates in raw municipal wastewater. Therefore, the effect of EE2 conjugates on the EE2 removal in WWTPs should be taken into account in future.

Evaluating the estrogenicity of an effluent-dominated river in California, USA: Comparisons of in vitro and in vivo bioassays

Estrogenically active compounds (EACs) in surface waters can disrupt the endocrine system of biota, raising concern for aquatic species. Concentrations of EACs are generally higher in effluent-dominated aquatic systems, such as California's Santa Ana River (SAR). Addressing estrogenicity of effluent-dominated waters is increasingly important due to both increasing urbanization and climate change. To this end, water samples were collected from multiple sites downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and intermittent points along the SAR during 2018-2019 and cell-based bioassays were used to determine estrogen receptor activity. During baseflow conditions, the highest estradiol equivalencies (EEQs) from all SAR water between summer (August and September) and fall (November) sampling events in 2018 were from Yorba Linda (EEQ = 1.36 ± 0.38 ng/L) and Prado (1.14 ± 0.13 ng/L), respectively. Water extracts in January 2019 following a major rainfall generally had higher EEQs with the highest EEQ of 10.0 ± 0.69 ng/L observed at Yorba Linda. During low flow conditions in November 2018, male Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) fish were exposed to SAR water to compare to cell bioassay responses and targeted analytical chemistry for 5 steroidal estrogens. Chemical-based EEQ correlations with in vitro EEQs were statistically significant. However, vitellogenin (vtg) mRNA expression in the livers of medaka exposed to SAR water was not significantly different compared to controls. These results indicate that seasonal variation and surface water runoff events influence estrogenic activity in the SAR and may induce estrogenic effects to native fish populations in wastewater-dominated streams in general.

Endocrine disrupting activities and geochemistry of water resources associated with unconventional oil and gas activity

The rise of hydraulic fracturing and unconventional oil and gas (UOG) exploration in the United States has increased public concerns for water contamination induced from hydraulic fracturing fluids and associated wastewater spills. Herein, we collected surface and groundwater samples across Garfield County, Colorado, a drilling-dense region, and measured endocrine bioactivities, geochemical tracers of UOG wastewater, UOG-related organic contaminants in surface water, and evaluated UOG drilling production (weighted well scores, nearby well count, reported spills) surrounding sites. Elevated antagonist activities for the estrogen, androgen, progesterone, and glucocorticoid receptors were detected in surface water and associated with nearby shale gas well counts and density. The elevated endocrine activities were observed in surface water associated with medium and high UOG production (weighted UOG well score-based groups). These bioactivities were generally not associated with reported spills nearby, and often did not exhibit geochemical profiles associated with UOG wastewater from this region. Our results suggest the potential for releases of low-saline hydraulic fracturing fluids or chemicals used in other aspects of UOG production, similar to the chemistry of the local water, and dissimilar from defined spills of post-injection wastewater. Notably, water collected from certain medium and high UOG production sites exhibited bioactivities well above the levels known to impact the health of aquatic organisms, suggesting that further research to assess potential endocrine activities of UOG operations is warranted.

Occurrence and risk assessment of steroid estrogens in environmental water samples: A five-year worldwide perspective

The ubiquitous occurrence of steroid estrogens (SEs) in the aquatic environment has raised global concern for their potential environmental impacts. This paper extensively compiled and reviewed the available occurrence data of SEs, namely estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2), based on 145 published articles in different regions all over the world including 51 countries and regions during January 2015-March 2020. The data regarding SEs concentrations and estimated 17β-estradiol equivalency (EEQ) values are then compared and analyzed in different environmental matrices, including natural water body, drinking and tap water, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluent. The detection frequencies of E1, 17β-E2, and E3 between the ranges of 53%-83% in natural water and WWTPs effluent, and the concentration of SEs varied considerably in different countries and regions. The applicability for EEQ estimation via multiplying relative effect potency (REP_i) by chemical analytical data, as well as correlation between EEQ_bio and EEQ_cal was also discussed. The risk quotient (RQ) values were on the descending order of EE2 > 17β-E2 > E1 > 17α-E2 > E3 in the great majority of investigations. Furthermore, E1, 17β-E2, and EE2 exhibited high or medium risks in water environmental samples via optimized risk quotient (RQ_f) approach at the continental-scale. This overview provides the latest insights on the global occurrence and ecological impacts of SEs and may act as a supportive tool for future SEs investigation and monitoring.

A unified treatment of the renewable portfolio standards is given concerning direct methanol fuel. The current mechanism of electrocatalysis of methanol oxidation on platinum and non-platinum-containing alloys is summarized for the systematic improvement of the rate of electro-oxidation of methanol are discussed. Policy realignment under the five-year plan is discussed in length to demonstrate how policy, markets, and engineering designs contribute towards the development of model direct methanol fuel cells operational enhancement, and factors that affect critical performance parameters for commercial exploitation are summarized for catalytic formulations and cell design within the context of why this investment in technology, education, and finances is required within the global context of sustainable energy and energy independence as exposed by thirteenth the five-year plan. China's industrial growth has been through internal market reforms and supplies side economics from the Chinese markets for fossil fuels except for petroleum. The latest renewable portfolio standards adopted have common elements as adopted from North American and the United Kingdom in terms of adaptation of obligation in terms of renewable portfolio standards as well as a realization that the necessity for renewables standards for the thirteen five year plan (from 2016 to 2020) need to less rigorously implemented due to performance targets that were met during the eleventh (06–10) and twelfth five-year plans (11–15) in terms of utilization of small coal-ire power plants, development of newer standards, led to an improvement of energy efficiency of 15 %, reduction of SO_x/NO_x by an average of 90 % and PM2.5 by 96 % over the last two five-year plans.

The current phase of the plan has a focus on energy generation from coal and a slowing down of renewables or Renewable energy curtailment of approximately 400 T Wh renewables including 300 T Wh of non-hydro power, principally from Guangdong, and Jiangsu for transfer of hydropower and Zhejiang, Tianjin, Henan for non-hydro power transfer with Beijing and Shanghai playing important roles in renewables energy curtailment and realignment using an integrated approach to optimize each provinces energy portfolio. The realignment of the renewable energy portfolio indicates that the newly installed capacity in Sichuan, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, and Zhejiang will account for less than 20 % of the current renewable energy portfolio but with the NO_x SO_x and PM_2.5 savings already accrued.

The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to methanol (70 / 110 million metric tons from all sources in 2019 for China/world) is one technological approach to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions and suggests that catalytic methanol synthesis by CO₂ hydrogenation may be a plausible approach, even if it is more expensive economically than methanol synthesis by the syngas approach. This is because the CO₂ emissions of the synthesis are lower than other synthesis methodologies. The Chinese government has placed a premium on cleaner air and water and may view such an approach as solving the dual issues of fuel substitution and reduction of CO₂. Thus, the coupling of hydrogen generation from sustainable energies sources (Solar 175 / 509 GW) or wind (211/591.5 GW in 2019) may be an attractive approach, as this requires slightly less water than coal gasification. Due to the thermodynamic requirement of lower operating pressure and higher operating pressure, currently, there is no single operational approach, although some practice approaches (220 °C at 48 atm using copper) and zinc oxide/alumina are suggested for optimal performance.
