Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Tempospatially Confined Catalytic Membranes for Advanced Water Remediation

The application of homogeneous catalysts in water remediation is limited by their excessive chemical and energy input, weak regenerability, and potential leaching. Heterogeneous catalytic membranes (CMs) offer a new approach to facilitate efficient, selective, and continuous pollutant degradation. Thus, integrating membranes and continuous filtration with heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can promote thermodynamic and kinetic mass transfers in spatially confined intrapores and facilitate diffusion-reaction processes. Despite the remarkable advantages of heterogeneous CMs, their engineering application is practically restricted due to the fuzzy design criteria for specific applications. Herein, the recent advances in CMs for advanced water remediation are critically reviewed and the design flow for tempospatially confined CMs is proposed. Further, state-of-the-art CM materials and their catalytic mechanisms are reviewed, after which the tempospatial confinement mechanisms comprising the nanoconfinement effect, interface effect, and kinetic mass transfer are emphasized, thus clarifying their roles in the construction and performance optimization of CMs. Additionally, the fabrication methods for CMs based on their catalysts and pore sizes are summarized and an overview of their application and performance evaluations is presented. Finally, future directions for CMs in materials research and water treatment, are presented.

From nano- to macroarchitectures: designing and constructing MOF-derived porous materials for persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) have gained significant attention as an effective approach for the elimination of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are regarded as promising catalysts for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) due to their tunable and diverse structure and composition. By the rational nanoarchitectured design of MOF-derived nanomaterials, the excellent performance and customized functions can be achieved. However, the intrinsic fine powder form and agglomeration ability of MOF-derived nanomaterials have limited their practical engineering application. Recently, a great deal of effort has been put into shaping MOFs into macroscopic objects without sacrificing the performance. This review presents recent advances in the design and synthetic strategies of MOF-derived nano- and macroarchitectures for PS-AOPs to degrade EOCs. Firstly, the strategies of preparing MOF-derived diverse nanoarchitectures including hierarchically porous, hollow, yolk-shell, and multi-shell structures are comprehensively summarized. Subsequently, the approaches of manufacturing MOF-based macroarchitectures are introduced in detail. Moreover, the PS-AOP application and mechanisms of MOF-derived nano- and macromaterials as catalysts to eliminate EOCs are discussed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOF-derived materials in PS-AOPs are discussed. This work will hopefully guide the design and development of MOF-derived porous materials in SR-AOPs.

Rational Design of a Necklace-like ZIF-67/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Electrospun Nanofiber Hybrid Membrane for Simultaneous Removal of PM0.3 and SO2

Growing concerns over poor air quality, especially in urban and industrial regions, have led to increased global demands for advanced air-purification technologies. However, the stability and airborne pollutant control abilities of the available air-purification materials under diverse environmental conditions are limited. Thus, the advanced development of filtration materials that can effectively control different types of pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants, simultaneously has attracted attention. The zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), a type of porous metal-organic framework (MOF), is a promising material for capturing weakly acidic toxic gases such as SO2 owing to its excellent adsorption performance and high thermal and chemical stability. In this study, we successfully developed an ultrastable necklace-like multifunctional hybrid membrane via the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-assisted in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67 crystals on electrospun Co2+-doped poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibers (70 nm) that can be used in different moisture environments to achieve sustainable air-filtration performance. The hybrid nanocomposite membrane demonstrated excellent performance for the simultaneous control of intractable fine PM0.3 (filtration efficiency, 99.461%) and SO2 (adsorption capacity, 1476.5 mg g-1) under different humidity conditions. This study contributes to the optimal synergistic integration of the advanced metal-organic framework (MOF)-nanofiber nanocomposite membranes and can guide the rational design and conceptualization of a facile and novel membrane for various applications in the environmental science and energy fields.

Unleashing the Power of PET-RAFT Polymerization: Journey from Porphyrin-Based Photocatalysts to Combinatorial Technologies and Advanced Bioapplications

The emergence of photoinduced energy/electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (PET-RAFT) not only revolutionized the field of photopolymerization but also accelerated the development of porphyrin-based photocatalysts and their analogues. The continual expansion of the monomer family compatible with PET-RAFT polymerization enhances the range of light radiation that can be harnessed, providing increased flexibility in polymerization processes. Furthermore, the versatility of PET-RAFT polymerization extends beyond its inherent capabilities, enabling its integration with various technologies in diverse fields. This integration holds considerable promise for the advancement of biomaterials with satisfactory bioapplications. This Review presents a concise introduction to the fundamental principles of PET-RAFT, outlines the progress in photocatalyst development, highlights its primary applications, and offers insights for future advancements in this technique, paving the way for exciting innovations and applications.

Nanoarchitectonics Design Strategy of Metal-Organic Framework and Bio-Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Advanced Wastewater Treatment through Adsorption

Freshwater depletion is an alarm for finding an eco-friendly solution to treat wastewater for drinking and domestic applications. Though several methods like chlorination, filtration, and coagulation-sedimentation are conventionally employed for water treatment, these methods need to be improved as they are not environmentally friendly, rely on chemicals, and are ineffective for all kinds of pollutants. These problems can be addressed by employing an alternative solution that is effective for efficient water treatment and favors commercial aspects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging porous material, possess high stability, pore size tunability, greater surface area, and active sites. These MOFs can be tailored; thus, they can be customized according to the target pollutant. Hence, MOFs can be employed as adsorbents that effectively target different pollutants. Bio-MOFs are a kind of MOFs that are incorporated with biomolecules, which also possess properties of MOFs and are used as a nontoxic adsorbent. In this review, we elaborate on the interaction between MOFs and target pollutants, the role of linkers in the adsorption of contaminants, tailoring strategy that can be employed on MOFs and Bio-MOFs to target specific pollutants, and we also highlight the effect of environmental matrices on adsorption of pollutants by MOFs.

Role of Interface of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites in Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Process for Water Purification

The persulfate activation-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) is an important technology in wastewater purification. Using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts in the PS-AOP showed good application potential. Considering the intrinsic advantages and disadvantages of MOF materials, combining MOFs with other functional materials has also shown excellent PS activation performance and even achieves certain functional expansion. This Review introduces the classification of MOFs and MOF-based composites and the latest progress of their application in PS-AOP systems. The relevant activation/degradation mechanisms are summarized and discussed. Moreover, the importance of catalyst-related interfacial interaction for developing and optimizing advanced oxidation systems is emphasized. Then, the interference behavior of environmental parameters on the interfacial reaction is analyzed. Specifically, the initial solution pH and coexisting inorganic anions may hinder the interfacial reaction process via the consumption of reactive oxygen species, affecting the activation/degradation process. This Review aims to explore and summarize the interfacial mechanism of MOF-based catalysts in the activation of PS. Hopefully, it will inspire researchers to develop new AOP strategies with more application prospects.

Fast Water Transport in UTSA-280 via a Knock-Off Mechanism

Water and other small molecules frequently coordinate within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These coordinated molecules may actively engage in mass transfer, moving together with the transport molecules, but this phenomenon has yet to be examined. In this study, we explore a unique water transfer mechanism in UTSA-280, where an incoming water molecule can displace a coordinated molecule for mass transfer. We refer to this process as the "knock-off" mechanism. Despite UTSA-280 possessing one-dimensional channels, the knock-off transport enables water movement along the other two axes, effectively simulating a pseudo-three-dimensional mass transfer. Even with a relatively narrow pore width, the knock-off mechanism enables a high water flux in the UTSA-280 membrane. The knock-off mechanism also renders UTSA-280 superior water/ethanol diffusion selectivity for pervaporation. To validate this unique mechanism, we conducted 1 H and 2 H solid-state NMR on UTSA-280 after the adsorption of deuterated water. We also derived potential energy diagrams from the density functional theory to gain atomic-level insight into the knock-off and the direct-hopping mechanisms. The simulation findings reveal that the energy barrier of the knock-off mechanism is marginally lower than the direct-hopping pathway, implying its potential role in enhancing water diffusion in UTSA-280.

Green and Sustainable Membranes: A review

Membranes are ubiquitous tools for modern water treatment technology that critically eliminate hazardous materials such as organic, inorganic, heavy metals, and biomedical pollutants. Nowadays, nano-membranes are of particular interest for myriad applications such as water treatment, desalination, ion exchange, ion concentration control, and several kinds of biomedical applications. However, this state-of-the-art technology suffers from some drawbacks, e.g., toxicity and fouling of contaminants, which makes the synthesis of green and sustainable membranes indeed safety-threatening. Typically, sustainability, non-toxicity, performance optimization, and commercialization are concerns centered on manufacturing green synthesized membranes. Thus, critical issues related to toxicity, biosafety, and mechanistic aspects of green-synthesized nano-membranes have to be systematically and comprehensively reviewed and discussed. Herein we evaluate various aspects of green nano-membranes in terms of their synthesis, characterization, recycling, and commercialization aspects. Nanomaterials intended for nano-membrane development are classified in view of their chemistry/synthesis, advantages, and limitations. Indeed, attaining prominent adsorption capacity and selectivity in green-synthesized nano-membranes requires multi-objective optimization of a number of materials and manufacturing parameters. In addition, the efficacy and removal performance of green nano-membranes are analyzed theoretically and experimentally to provide researchers and manufacturers with a comprehensive image of green nano-membrane efficiency under real environmental conditions.

Degradation of atrazine by electroactivation of persulfate using FeCuO@C modified composite cathode: Synergistic activation mechanism

In sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), high-efficiency and perdurable materials have drawn considerable interest for use as cathodes, which can effectively degrade refractory organic contaminants through the synergistic electro-activation and transition metal activation of persulfate (PS). Here, the FeCuO@C modified composite cathode (FeCuO@C/AGF) was synthesized via the solvothermal and thermal treatment method based on the CuFe-MOF-74 structure, and the electro-activation PS process (EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS) was developed to effectively remove atrazine (ATZ). The surface morphology, electrochemical characteristics, chemical composition, crystal structure, and electrode surface wettability of FeCuO@C/AGF were investigated. It was found that the proposed EC/FeCuO@C/AGF/PS process can successfully remove 100% of ATZ in 20 min at a low current density (2 mA cm^-2) and a low PS concentration (0.4 mM), and PS is successfully activated by combining the electrical and transition metal synergistic activation. The FeCuO@C/AGF cathode exhibits outstanding catalytic functionality over a broad pH range (2-9) and remains stable over five successive cycles. Additionally, the active species involved in the reaction as well as the potential ATZ degradation reaction mechanisms and pathways are discussed. Electrochemical oxidation is a process in which both radicals (SO₄^·-, ·OH, and O₂^·-) and non-radical (¹O₂) participate in the degradation of ATZ. The intermediates of the ATZ degradation process were studied upon the toxicity changing, and the toxicity of the intermediates was found to be reduced during degradation. These results present a novel approach toward the establishment of an effective and reliable electrode in SR-AOPs that can efficiently treat pesticide wastewater.

Guiding Metal Organic Framework Morphology via Monolayer Artificial Defect-Induced Preferential Facet Selection

Guiding metal organic framework (MOF) morphology, especially without the need for chemical additives, still remains a challenge. For the first time, we report a unique surface guiding approach in controlling the crystal morphology formation of zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and HKUST-1 MOFs on disrupted alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-covered Au substrates. Selective molecule removal is applied to generate diverse SAM matrices rich in artificial molecular defects in a monolayer to direct the dynamic crystal growth process. When a 11-mercaptoundecanol alkanethiol monolayer is ruptured, the hydroxyl tail groups of surface residue molecules act as nucleating sites by coordination with precursor metal ions. Meanwhile, the exposed alkane chain backbones stabilize a particular facet of MOF nuclei in the dynamic growth by slowing down their crystal growth rates along a specific direction. The competitive formation between the [110] and [100] planes of ZIF-8 ultimately regulates the crystal shapes from rhombic dodecahedron, truncated rhombic dodecahedron, and truncated cube to cube. Similarly, changeable morphologies of HKUST-1 crystals are also achieved from cube and tetrakaidekahedron to octahedron, originating from the competitive selection between the [100] and [111] planes. In addition to the artificial matrix preferred orientation of initial nucleation, parameters such as temperature also play a crucial role in the resulting crystal morphology. Standing on the additive-free MOF crystal morphology growth control, porous architectures prepared in this approach can act as templates for ligand-free metal (Au, Ag, and Cu) nanocluster synthesis. The nanocluster-embedded MOF structures represent distinct crystal morphology-dependent optical properties, and interestingly, their fluorescence emission can be highly enhanced by facet-induced nanocluster packing alignments. These findings not only provide a unique thought on MOF crystal morphology guidance but also pave a new route for the accompanied property investigation and further application.

Template-directed growth of sustainable carboxymethyl cellulose-based aerogels decorated with ZIF-67 for activation peroxymonosulfate degradation of organic dyes

A novel 3D advanced oxidation catalyst ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was successfully synthesized by facile in-situ growth of Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67). C-CMC/rGO aerogel crosslinked by poly (methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid)/polyethylene glycol system (PMVEMA/PEG) as the host material was prepared through a template-directed growth model and exhibited outstanding mechanical properties. The sustainable composite was successfully used as an efficient catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate SO₄^-· and ·OH, then leads to the removal of organic contaminants. As a result, almost 100 % of 10 ppm MB/RhB solution can be degraded within 5 min due to the combination of catalyst aerogel and PMS. What's more, the aerogel showed a wide pH tolerance range from 4 to 9 and maintained up to 93 % of the contaminant removal rate compared to the initial value after four cycles. The ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO aerogel with high load rate and excellent catalytic degradation performance not only solved the problem of dispersion and recovery of ZIF-67 particles, but also provided a new idea for the compound wastewater purification in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

Gravity-driven rattan-based catalytic filter for rapid and highly efficient organic pollutant removal

Metal organic frameworks hold great promise as heterogeneous catalysts in sulfate radical (SO₄^∙-) based advanced oxidation. However, the aggregation of powdered MOF crystals and the complicated recovery procedure largely hinder their large-scale practical applications. It is important to develop eco-friendly and adaptable substrate-immobilized metal organic frameworks. Based on the hierarchical pore structure of the rattan, gravity-driven metal organic frameworks loaded rattan-based catalytic filter was designed to degrade organic pollutants by activating PMS at high liquid fluxes. Inspired by the water transportation of rattan, ZIF-67 was in-situ grown uniformly on the rattan channels inner surface using the continuous flow method. The intrinsically aligned microchannels in the vascular bundles of rattan acted as reaction compartments for the immobilization and stabilization of ZIF-67. Furthermore, the rattan-based catalytic filter exhibited excellent gravity-driven catalytic activity (up to 100 % treatment efficiency for a water flux of 10173.6 L·m^-2·h^-1), recyclability, and stability of organic pollutant degradation. After ten cycles, the TOC removal of ZIF-67@rattan was 69.34 %, maintaining a stable mineralisation capacity for pollutants. The inhibitory effect of the micro-channel promoted the interaction between active groups and contaminants, increasing the degradation efficiency and improving the stability of the composite. The design of a gravity-driven rattan-based catalytic filter for wastewater treatment provides an effective strategy for developing renewable and continuous catalytic systems.

Bimetallic-MOF-Derived ZnxCo3-xO4/Carbon Nanofiber Composited Sorbents for High-Temperature Coal Gas Desulfurization

Desulfurization sorbent with a high active component utilization is of importance for the removal of H₂S from coal gas at high temperatures. Thus, the hypothesis for producing Zn_xCo_3-xO₄/carbon nanofiber sorbents via the combinations of electrospinning, in situ hydrothermal growth, and carbonization technique has been rationally constructed in this study. Zn_xCo_3-xO₄ nanoparticles derived from metal-organic frameworks are uniformly loaded on the electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high dispersion. Zn_xCo_3-xO₄/CNFs sorbents possess the highest breakthrough sulfur adsorption capacity (12.4 g S/100 g sorbent) and an excellent utilization rate of the active component (83.2%). The excellent performance of Zn_xCo_3-xO₄/CNFs can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the hierarchical structure and widely distributed Zn_xCo_3-xO₄ on the CNFs supporter. The decomposition of Zn/Co-ZIFs not only generates the nucleus of oxides but also realizes their physical isolation through the formation of carbon grids on the surface of CNFs, avoiding the aggregation of oxides. Furthermore, Zn_xCo_3-xO₄/CNFs sorbents show an overwhelming superiority over the ZnO/CNFs sorbent, which is attributed to the introduction of Co and then the promotion of the stability of Zn at high temperatures. The presence of Co also accelerates the adsorption of H₂S on the active site of the oxide surface. The presented method is beneficial for promoting desulfurization performances and producing sorbents with high utilization of active components.

Next-generation graphene oxide additives composite membranes for emerging organic micropollutants removal: Separation, adsorption and degradation

In the past two decades, membrane technology has attracted considerable interest as a viable and promising method for water purification. Emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) in wastewater have trace, persistent, highly variable quantities and types, develop hazardous intermediates and are diffusible. These primary issues affect EOMPs polluted wastewater on an industrial scale differently than in a lab, challenging membranes-based EOMP removal. Graphene oxide (GO) promises state-of-the-art membrane synthesis technologies and use in EOMPs removal systems due to its superior physicochemical, mechanical, and electrical qualities and high oxygen content. This critical review highlights the recent advancements in the synthesis of next-generation GO membranes with diverse membrane substrates such as ceramic, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The EOMPs removal efficiencies of GO membranes in filtration, adsorption (incorporated with metal, nanomaterial in biodegradable polymer and biomimetic membranes), and degradation (in catalytic, photo-Fenton, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic membranes) and corresponding removal mechanisms of different EOMPs are also depicted. GO-assisted water treatment strategies were further assessed by various influencing factors, including applied water flow mode and membrane properties (e.g., permeability, hydrophily, mechanical stability, and fouling). GO additive membranes showed better permeability, hydrophilicity, high water flux, and fouling resistance than pristine membranes. Likewise, degradation combined with filtration is two times more effective than alone, while crossflow mode improves the photocatalytic degradation performance of the system. GO integration in polymer membranes enhances their stability, facilitates photocatalytic processes, and gravity-driven GO membranes enable filtration of pollutants at low pressure, making membrane filtration more inexpensive. However, simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants with contrasting characteristics and variable efficiencies in different systems demands further optimization in GO-mediated membranes. This review concludes with identifying future critical research directions to promote research for determining the GO-assisted OMPs removal membrane technology nexus and maximizing this technique for industrial application.

State-of-the-Art on the Sulfate Radical-Advanced Oxidation Coupled with Nanomaterials: Biological and Environmental Applications

Sulfate radicals (SO₄^-·) play important biological roles in biomedical and environmental engineering, such as antimicrobial, antitumor, and disinfection. Compared with other common free radicals, it has the advantages of a longer half-life and higher oxidation potential, which could bring unexpected effects. These properties have prompted researchers to make great contributions to biology and environmental engineering by exploiting their properties. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) are the main raw materials for SO₄^-· formation. Due to the remarkable progress in nanotechnology, a large number of nanomaterials have been explored that can efficiently activate PMS/PDS, which have been used to generate SO₄^-· for biological applications. Based on the superior properties and application potential of SO₄^-·, it is of great significance to review its chemical mechanism, biological effect, and application field. Therefore, in this review, we summarize the latest design of nanomaterials that can effectually activate PMS/PDS to create SO₄^-·, including metal-based nanomaterials, metal-free nanomaterials, and nanocomposites. Furthermore, we discuss the underlying mechanism of the activation of PMS/PDS using these nanomaterials and the application of SO₄^-· in the fields of environmental remediation and biomedicine, liberating the application potential of SO₄^-·. Finally, this review provides the existing problems and prospects of nanomaterials being used to generate SO₄^-· in the future, providing new ideas and possibilities for the development of biomedicine and environmental remediation.

Recent progress of functional metal-organic framework materials for water treatment using sulfate radicals

Human health is being threatened by the ever-increasing water pollution. Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are rapidly being developed and gaining considerable attention due to their high oxidation potential and selectivity as a way to purify water by degrading organic contaminants in it. Among the catalytic materials that can activate the precursor to generate SO₄^•-, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the most promising heterogeneous catalytic material in SR-AOPs because of their various structure possibilities, large surface area, ordered porous structure, and regular activation sites. Herein, an in-depth overview of MOFs and their derivatives for water purification with SR-AOPs is provided. The latest studies on pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives (metal oxides, metal-carbon hybrids, and carbon materials) are summarized. The mechanisms of decomposition of pollutants in water via radical and non-radical pathways are also discussed. This review suggests future research directions for water purification through MOF-based SR-AOP.

Layer-by-layer coating of MIL-100(Fe) on a cotton fabric for purification of water-soluble dyes by the combined effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation

Efforts have been made for sustainable development of adsorbents to purify organic contaminants from wastewater. In this study, a MIL-100(Fe) based textile that acts as a reusable adsorbent and photocatalytic agent was developed by synthesizing MIL-100(Fe) onto a cotton fabric by the layer-by-layer (LBL) process using water-based solutions. As the number of LBL cycles increased, the add-on's of MIL-100(Fe) showed a drastic increase up to 8 cycles, then showed gradual increases with further treatments. The overall adsorption performance was enhanced with the increased MIL-100(Fe) add-on's, but the specific adsorption efficiency per unit mass of MIL-100(Fe) was reduced as the LBL cycles increased, implying the reduced average adsorption efficiency with a thicker coating. To examine the reusability of the adsorbent, desorption efficiency of RhB was measured. The desorption after the first-time adsorption was not efficient due to the strong binding inside the pores. For the later cycles of adsorption–desorption, desorption occurred more efficiently, probably because RhB molecules were adhered mostly at the outer surface of the MOF layer. Simultaneously, MIL-100(Fe)@cotton demonstrated the photocatalytic degradation performance against RhB in the presence of H₂O₂ by the Fenton reaction. With the combined effect of adsorption and photodegradation, the developed fabric attained 96% removal efficiency for RhB dissolved in water. This study demonstrates an environmentally responsible process of developing a MIL-100(Fe) coated fabric that is readily available for effective removal of organic foulants in water. This fabrication method can be applied as a scalable manufacturing of metal–organic framework-based photocatalytic adsorbent textiles.

A MIL-100(Fe)-based water purifying textile that functions by dual action of adsorption and photocatalytic activity is designed via a layer-by-layer process without using toxic organic solvents.

Investigating the Influence of Metal-Organic Framework Loading on the Filtration Performance of Electrospun Nanofiber Air Filters

Integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into electrospun nanofiber filters has become an effective method for improving particle filtration efficiency. This study hypothesized that there is an optimal amount of MOFs that can be integrated into electrospun nanofiber filters to achieve the maximum particle removal efficiency while minimizing the corresponding MOF synthesis time. To test the hypothesis, this study systematically explored the influence of the time-dependent in situ growing process of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), a typical type of MOFs, on the filtration performance of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers. The results show that the surface morphology and chemical composition of the PAN/ZIF-67 hybrid nanofiber filters gradually changed with the reaction time. For PAN/ZIF-67 hybrid nanofiber filters with relatively low initial PM0.3-0.4 filtration efficiency, a reaction time of only 5 min was sufficient for the synthesis of the amount of ZIF-67 that maximized the PM0.3-0.4 filtration efficiency. However, for thick filters with high original PM0.3-0.4 filtration efficiency (>90%), the integration of ZIF-67 was not necessary, because the efficiency enhancement would not be significant. In addition, the enhancement of filtration efficiency for ultrafine particles was positively correlated with the amount of incorporated ZIF-67. In summary, this study shortened the synthesis time of the in situ incorporation of MOFs into electrospun nanofiber filters from more than 10 h (reported in the literature) to only 5 min.

Gas sensing based on metal-organic frameworks: Concepts, functions, and developments

Effective detection of pollutant gases is vital for protection of natural environment and human health. There is an increasing demand for sensing devices that are equipped with high sensitivity, fast response/recovery speed, and remarkable selectivity. Particularly, attention is given to the designability of sensing materials with porous structures. Among diverse kinds of porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit high porosity, high degree of crystallinity and exceptional chemical activity. Their strong host-guest interactions with guest molecules facilitate the application of MOFs in adsorption, catalysis and sensing systems. In particular, the tailorable framework/composition and potential for post-synthetic modification of MOFs endow them with widely promising application in gas sensing devices. In this review, we outlined the fundamental aspects and applications of MOFs for gas sensors, and discussed various techniques of monitoring gases based on MOFs as functional materials. Insights and perspectives for further challenges faced by MOFs are discussed in the end.

Reactive Extrusion Printing for Simultaneous Crystallization-Deposition of Metal-Organic Framework Films

Reactive extrusion printing (REP) is demonstrated as an approach to simultaneously crystallize and deposit films of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu3 btc2 (btc=1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), also known as HKUST-1. The technique co-delivers inks of the copper(II) acetate and H3 btc starting materials directly on-surface and on-location for rapid nucleation into films at room temperature. The films were analyzed using PXRD, profilometry, SEM and thermal analysis techniques and confirmed high-quality Cu3 btc2 films are produced in low-dispersity interconnected nanoparticulate form. The porosity was examined using gas adsorption which showed REP gives Cu3 btc2 films with open interconnected pore structures, demonstrating the method bestows features that traditional synthesis does not. REP is a technique that opens the field to time-efficient large-scale fabrication of MOF interfaces and should find use in a wide variety of coating application settings.

Facile preparation of nanocellulose/Zn-MOF-based catalytic filter for water purification by oxidation process

Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have recently attracted much attention due to their potential in degrading organic pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as effective materials to generate SO₄^•-. However, it is challenging to separate and recover the dispersed MOF particles from the reaction solution when MOFs are used alone. We used cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as a porous filter template to immobilize Zn-based MOF, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and obtained a catalytic composite membrane having peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activating function to produce SO₄^•-. The CNF was effective in holding ZIF-8 nanoparticle and making a durable porous filter. The activated PMS-produced ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals from ZIF-8 play an important role in the catalytic reaction. More than 90% of methylene blue and rhodamine B was degraded by ZIF-8/CNFs composite membrane in the PMS environment within 60 min. The ZIF-8/CNFs catalytic filters can be used several times without performance reduction for organic dye degradation. The results show that ZIF-8/CNFs catalytic membrane can be separated from organic pollution system quickly and used for the efficient separation and recovery of MOF particle-based catalytic materials. Therefore, this study provides a new perspective for fabricating the MOFs particles-immobilized catalytic filter by biomass nanocellulose-based materials for water purification. This method can be used for facile fabrication of the cellulose-based porous functional filter and open diverse applications.

MXene/ZIF-67/PAN Nanofiber Film for Ultra-sensitive Pressure Sensors

Flexible pressure sensors may be used in electronic skin (e-skin), artificial intelligence devices, and disease diagnosis, which require a large response range and high sensitivity. An appropriate design of the structure of the active layer can help effectively solve this problem. Herein, we aim at developing a wearable pressure sensor using the MXene/ZIF-67/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber film, fabricated by electrospinning technology. Owing to the rough structure and three-dimensional network architecture, the MXene/ZIF-67/PAN film-based device displays a broad working range (0-100 kPa), good sensitivity (62.8 kPa^-1), robust mechanical stability (over 10,000 cycles), and fast response/recovery time (10/8 ms). Moreover, the fabricated pressure sensors can be used to detect and differentiate between different body motion information, including elbow bending, finger movements, and wrist pulses. Overall, this design of a rough three-dimensional conductive network structure shows potential in the field of wearable electronics and medical devices.

Advancing interfacial properties of carbon cloth via anodic-induced self-assembly of MOFs film integrated with α-MnO2: A sustainable electrocatalyst sensing acetylcholine

The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable composition, modified structure, and morphologically controlled nanoarchitectures are quite imperative to improve the electrochemical (EC) performances of sensing platforms. Herein, EC control over the fabrication of HKUST-1 (Cu-MOFs) nanocrystals is achieved via anodic-induced electrodeposition approach following the mixing of Cu²⁺ salt precursor in the vicinity of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC^3-) ligands. The problem of controlled mass transfer and slow dispersal of MOFs is resolved by EC deposition of pyramidal-octagonal MOFs on a highly conductive and flexible carbon substrate (activated carbon cloth, ACC) wrapped with rGO layers (ACC-rGO@Cu(BTC). Further, α-MnO₂ is integrated on ACC-rGO@Cu(BTC) to achieve the synergistic effect of ternary structure interfaces. The novel ACC-rGO@Cu(BTC)@MnO₂ based flexible electrode exhibits striking EC performance toward non-enzymatic sensing of acetylcholine (ACh) including wide linear range (0.1 µM - 3 mM), lowest detection limit (5 nM, S/N = 3), high selectivity, and long-term stability. Moreover, the developed sensing system has been applied for real-time detection of ACh efflux released from three different cell lines and biological matrices. Our work unlocks a new prospect of precisely structured MOFs with extensive functionalities and scaled-up fabrication methods via selection of nanoscale reaction centers to develop flexible sensing devices.

Enhancement strategies for efficient activation of persulfate by heterogeneous cobalt-containing catalysts: A review

As a clean and efficient technology for the degradation of organic contaminants, sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have attracted more and more attention in the past decades. Cobalt is regarded as the most reactive and efficient non-noble metal catalyst for the activation of persulfate including peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) to produce sulfate radicals. Due to the limitations of homogeneous catalytic systems, the heterogeneous cobalt-containing catalysts have been emerged and rapidly developed. Various strategies have been schemed to further enhance the activation ability of persulfate by heterogeneous cobalt-containing catalysts. This paper provides an overview on the recent progress in enhancement strategies for the highly efficient activation of persulfate by heterogeneous cobalt-containing catalysts. With a brief introduction on the chemistry and feature of sulfate radical reactions catalyzed by homogeneous Co²⁺/Co³⁺ species, the main strategies for enhancing persulfate activation by heterogeneous cobalt-containing catalysts are summarized, such as surface and morphology design, multiple reactive centers design, organic-inorganic hybrids and heterostructure composites. Future perspectives of heterogeneous SR-AOPs systems catalyzed by cobalt-containing catalysts are outlined.

Macroscopic MOF Architectures: Effective Strategies for Practical Application in Water Treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential applications in removing pollutants such as heavy metals, oils, and toxins from water. However, due to the intrinsic fragility of MOFs and their fine powder form, there are still technical barriers to their practical application such as blockage of pipes, difficulty in recovery, and potential environmental toxicity. Therefore, attention has focused on approaches to convert nanocrystalline MOFs into macroscopic materials to overcome these limitations. Recently, strategies for shaping MOFs into beads (0D), nanofibers (1D), membranes (2D), and gels/sponges (3D) with macrostructures are developed including direct mixing, in situ growth, or deposition of MOFs with polymers, cotton, foams or other porous substrates. In this review, successful strategies for the fabrication of macroscopic materials from MOFs and their applications in removing pollutants from water including adsorption, separation, and advanced oxidation processes, are discussed. The relationship between the macroscopic performance and the microstructure of materials, and how the range of 0D to 3D macroscopic materials can be used for water treatment are also outlined.

Boron nitride quantum dots decorated MIL-100(Fe) for boosting the photo-generated charge separation in photocatalytic refractory antibiotics removal

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for photocatalysis, but only possess moderate activity due to their slow charge transfer and low solar energy conversion. Herein, heterostructures photocatalysts constructed by boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) and MIL-100(Fe) (MNB) were successfully fabricated for overcoming these shortcomings. It was indicated that the composites possessed large surface area, mesoporous structure, and enhanced visible light absorption. The MNB photocatalysts exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under visible light irradiation. Compared with MIL-100(Fe), the photodegradation rate of TC-HCl by MNB-1 was 0.02383 min^-1, which was 5.3 times higher than that of pure MIL-100(Fe). The close contact of MIL-100(Fe) with BNQDs and the synergistic effect between them were the main reasons for the improved photodegradation performance. This study reveals that a rational combination of MIL-100(Fe) and BNQDs can improve photocatalytic activity to enhance molecular oxygen activation. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that quantum dots/MOFs photocatalysts have great potential in environmental remediation.

Enhanced degradation of bisphenol A by mixed ZIF derived CoZn oxide encapsulated N-doped carbon via peroxymonosulfate activation: The importance of N doping amount

In this study, mixed metal cobalt zinc oxide embedded nitrogen enriched porous carbon composites (CoZnO-PC) were prepared via pyrolyzing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) encapsulated Co, Zn-bimetal centered zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF). The prepared composites were then used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) removal in water. When mole ratio of Co/Zn was 2/1, the resulted Co₂Zn₁O-PC possessed spinel structure with prominent degradation capability, in which the introduction of Zn accelerated the PMS activation performance of Co through establishing bimetal synergistic interactions. Both radical and non-radical activation pathways were existed in the Co₂Zn₁O-PC/PMS system, in which Co₂Zn₁O dominated the radical pathway whereas PC dominated the non-radical way. Since PVP contained abundant nitrogen atoms and could form strong coordination interactions with the ZIF precursor, the introduction of PVP in the ZIF precursor prevented pore collapsing during pyrolysis process, as well as enhancing the nitrogen content in the pyrolzed composites, which significantly promoted the generation of singlet oxygen. With combined pathways, the Co₂Zn₁O-PC/PMS system showed a wide pH application range with promising mineralization rate. Meanwhile, the spinel-structured Co₂Zn₁O-PC was magnetically separable with desirable recyclability. This study presents a novel composite with remarkable performance for the removal of refractory organic pollutants in municipal wastewater.

2D confinement freestanding graphene oxide composite membranes with enriched oxygen vacancies for enhanced organic contaminants removal via peroxymonosulfate activation

Introducing membrane filtration into advanced oxidation processes to decrease energy and cost consumption has been considered as a promising direction in environmental remediation. In this work, we firstly developed a kind of novel lawn-like Fe₂O₃@Co_0.08Fe_1.92@nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide@carbon nanotube composites (FeCo@GCTs) through in-situ pyrolysis of self-assembly of Prussian blue analogues and GO, followed through a vacuum-assisted filtration strategy to fabricate 2D confinement freestanding GO composite membrane. Electrochemical analysis and H₂-TPR revealed the superiority of FeCo@GCTs as ideal electron acceptor, and this unique lawn-like structure concentrated active sites with a confined space and enriched oxygen vacancies that realized 98.5% (0.128 min^-1) sulfamethoxazole degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation, and accelerated the reduction of Cr(VI). Owing to the increasing interlayer spacing of GO nanosheets, the permeation flux of FeCo@GCTs/GO membrane has not only been attained to 487.3 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1, which was more than 7.5-fold of GO membrane (64.6 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1), but also achieved the synergistic membrane filtration and catalytic degradation of pollutants. Furthermore, scavenger experiments and EPR tests were conducted to confirm the active radicals, of which SO₄·^- and ¹O₂ were responsible for SMX degradation. Therefore, these features demonstrated great potential for the fabricated 2D confinement catalytic membrane with enriched oxygen vacancies in wastewater purification.

Recyclable polyurethane foam loaded with carboxymethyl chitosan for adsorption of methylene blue

Novel composite foam (CMCTS-PUF-s) was prepared by immobilizing carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS) on polyurethane foam (PUF) in which amino groups in CMCTS reacted with isocyanate groups in polyurethane prepolymer. The adsorption capacity of the optimal composite foam (CMCTS-PUF-5) reached to 118.2 mg/g with 5% CMCTS loading. The removal rate to methylene blue (MB) was up to 97.1%, which was obviously higher than 18.9% of PUF. After recycling for five times, the removal rate still reached 83.2%, which strongly proved the excellent reusability of immobilizing CMCTS modified PUF. The characterization results of FTIR and TG showed that CMCTS was well loaded on PUF by covalent bond. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of CMCTS-PUF-5 were increased by 252% and 97% compared with that of PUF. MIP characterization result showed the porosity of CMCTS-PUF-5 was 73.99% and the pore sizes were mainly distributed between 50 and 150 µm, which provide sufficient diffusion channels and active sites for MB dyes. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm proved pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model could well describe the adsorption process of CMCTS-PUF-5. Therefore, CMCTS-PUF-s presents excellent recoverability, high stability and attractive adsorption efficiency, shows the potential application in future treatment of dye wastewater.

Defect Engineering in Metal‒Organic Frameworks as Futuristic Options for Purification of Pollutants in an Aqueous Environment

Clean water scarcity is becoming an increasingly important worldwide issue. The water treatment industry is demanding the development of novel effective materials. Defect engineering in nanoparticles is among the most revolutionary of technologies. Because of their high surface area, structural diversity, and tailorable ability, Metal‒Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can be used for a variety of purposes including separation, storage, sensing, drug delivery, and many other issues. The application in wastewater treatment associated with water stable MOF‒based materials has been an emerging research topic in recent decades. Defect engineering is a sophisticated technique used to manufacture defects and to change the geometric framework of target compounds. Since MOFs have a series of designable structures and active sites, tailoring properties in MOFs by defect engineering is a novel concept. Defect engineering can excavate hidden active sites in MOFs, which can lead to better performance in many fields. Therefore, this technology will open new opportunities in water purification processes. However, there has been little effort to comprehensively discuss this topic. In this review, we provide an overview of the development of defect engineered MOFs for water purification processes. Furthermore, we discuss the potential applications of defect engineered materials.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Liquid Phase Applications

In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted overwhelming attention. With readily tunable structures and functionalities, MOFs offer an unprecedentedly vast degree of design flexibility from enormous number of inorganic and organic building blocks or via postsynthetic modification to produce functional nanoporous materials. A large extent of experimental and computational studies of MOFs have been focused on gas phase applications, particularly the storage of low-carbon footprint energy carriers and the separation of CO2-containing gas mixtures. With progressive success in the synthesis of water- and solvent-resistant MOFs over the past several years, the increasingly active exploration of MOFs has been witnessed for widespread liquid phase applications such as liquid fuel purification, aromatics separation, water treatment, solvent recovery, chemical sensing, chiral separation, drug delivery, biomolecule encapsulation and separation. At this juncture, the recent experimental and computational studies are summarized herein for these multifaceted liquid phase applications to demonstrate the rapid advance in this burgeoning field. The challenges and opportunities moving from laboratory scale towards practical applications are discussed.

MOF based engineered materials in water remediation: Recent trends

The significant upsurge in the demand for freshwater has prompted various developments towards water sustainability. In this context, several materials have gained remarkable interest for the removal of emerging contaminants from various freshwater sources. Among the currently investigated materials for water treatment, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a developing class of porous materials, have provided excellent platforms for the separation of several pollutants from water. The structural modularity and the striking chemical/physical properties of MOFs have provided more room for target-specific environmental applications. However, MOFs limit their practical applications in water treatment due to poor processability issues of the intrinsically fragile and powdered crystalline forms. Nevertheless, growing efforts are recognized to impart macroscopic shapability to render easy handling shapes for real-time industrial applications. Furthermore, efforts have been devoted to improve the stabilities of MOFs that are subjected to fragile collapse in aqueous environments expanding their use in water treatment. Advances made in MOF based material design have headed towards the use of MOF based aerogels/hydrogels, MOF derived carbons (MDCs), hydrophobic MOFs and magnetic framework composites (MFCs) to remediate water from contaminants and for the separation of oils from water. This review is intended to highlight some of the recent trends followed in MOF based material engineering towards effective water regeneration.

Graphene oxide aerogel assembled by dimethylaminopropylamine /N-isopropylethylenediamine for the removal of copper ions

Graphene Oxide Monolith composites (GOMs) were prepared using dimethylaminopropylamine (DMPDA) and N-isopropylethylenediamine (IPEDA) with one-step method in water medium, respectively. Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) tests proved the formation of new structure and credible interactions between crosslinkers and GO. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed distinct change of morphology after complexing. Bath adsorption tests suggested that the fast adsorption of copper ions (II) was strongly affected by pH, ionic strength, temperature, and concentration, etc.. Isothermal Langmuir and Freundlich kinetic model showed the different degree of fitting conformity according to different conditions. SEM and XRD further provided a supporter of adsorption of copper ions onto GOMs, and Density functional theory (DFT) was used to analyze the crosslinking details of DMPDA and GO and the adsorption mechanism of copper ions. The theoretical calculation results clarified an efficacious and quantitative understanding for the crosslinking and adsorption mechanism.
