Synthesis of a novel cost-effective double-ligand Zr-based MOF via an inverted modulator strategy towards enhanced adsorption and photodegradation of tetracycline

Developing visible-light response photocatalysts with high activity and adsorption alongside sustainability is vitally important to environmental restoration. Here, we fabricated a novel metal organic framework (MOF) with cost-effective double-ligands (fumaric acid and 2-aminoterephthalic acid as ligand precursors, denoted as MA-MOF) via a facile solvothermal method. Specifically, crystalline [Zr6O4(OH)4(fumarate)6] (MOF-801) can be only formed with monocarboxylic acids as modulators. Therefore, in the construction of crystalline double-ligand MA-MOF, the absence of monocarboxylic acid modulators successfully prevents the formation of crystalline MOF-801. Instead, the crystalline double-ligand MA-MOF is formed. Properties of MA-MOFs including the surface area, porosity, charge transfer resistance, and energy level position can be adjusted via altering the ratio of ligands. The optimal sample, MA-MOF2 (prepared with a molar ratio of fumaric acid and 2-aminoterephthalic acid being 2:1), shows a total 94.6% removal of tetracycline via adsorption and photodegradation, far exceeding the corresponding single-ligand counterparts. This work proposes an innovative inverted modulator strategy for constructing double-ligand MOFs.

Separable Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for the Adsorption of Emerging Contaminants

Thousands of chemicals have been released into the environment in recent decades. The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water has emerged as a pressing concern. Adsorption is a viable solution for the removal of ECs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential as efficient adsorbents, but their dispersed powder form limits their practical applications. Recently, researchers have developed various separable MOF-based adsorbents to improve their recyclability. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest developments in the construction of separable MOF-based adsorbents and their applications in adsorbing ECs. The construction strategies for separable MOFs are classified into four categories: magnetic MOFs, MOF-fiber composites, MOF gels, and binder-assisted shaping. Typical emerging contaminants include pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The adsorption performance of different materials is evaluated based on the results of static and dynamic adsorption experiments. Additionally, the regeneration methods of MOF-based adsorbents are discussed in detail to facilitate effective recycling and reuse. Finally, challenges and potential future research opportunities are proposed, including reducing performance losses during the shaping process, developing assessment systems based on dynamic purification and real polluted water, optimizing regeneration methods, designing multifunctional MOFs, and low-cost, large-scale synthesis of MOFs.

Recent Progress in MOF-Aerogel Fabrication and Applications

Recent advancements in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) underscore their significant potential in chemical and materials research, owing to their remarkable properties and diverse structures. Despite challenges like intrinsic brittleness, powdered crystalline nature, and limited stability impeding direct applications, MOF-based aerogels have shown superior performance in various areas, particularly in water treatment and contaminant removal. This review highlights the latest progress in MOF-based aerogels, with a focus on hybrid systems incorporating materials like graphene, carbon nanotube, silica, and cellulose in MOF aerogels, which enhance their functional properties. The manifold advantages of MOF-based aerogels in energy storage, adsorption, and catalysis are discussed, with an emphasizing on their improved stability, processability, and ease of handling. This review aims to unlock the potential of MOF-based aerogels and their real-world applications. Aerogels are expected to reshape the technological landscape of MOFs through enhanced stability, adaptability, and efficiency.

Innovations in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Pioneering adsorption approaches for persistent organic pollutant (POP) removal

Adsorption is a promising way to remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs), a major environmental issue. With their high porosity and vast surface areas, MOFs are suited for POP removal due to their excellent adsorption capabilities. This review addresses the intricate principles of MOF-mediated adsorption and helps to future attempts to mitigate organic water pollution. This review examines the complicated concepts of MOF-mediated adsorption, including MOF synthesis methodologies, adsorption mechanisms, and material tunability and adaptability. MOFs' ability to adsorb POPs via electrostatic forces, acid-base interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pi-pi interactions is elaborated. This review demonstrates its versatility in eliminating many types of contaminants. Functionalizing, adding metal nanoparticles, or changing MOFs after they are created can improve their performance and remove contaminants. This paper also discusses MOF-based pollutant removal issues and future prospects, including adsorption capacity, selectivity, scale-up for practical application, stability, and recovery. These obstacles can be overcome by rationally designing MOFs, developing composite materials, and improving material production and characterization. Overall, MOF technology research and innovation hold considerable promise for environmental pollution solutions and sustainable remediation. Desorption and regeneration in MOFs are also included in the review, along with methods for improving pollutant removal efficiency and sustainability. Case studies of effective MOF regeneration and scaling up for practical deployment are discussed, along with future ideas for addressing these hurdles.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Composites for Organic Effluent Remediation

Environmental pollution caused by organic effluents emitted by industry has become a worldwide issue and poses a serious threat to the public and the ecosystem. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprising metal-containing clusters and organic bridging ligands, are porous and crystalline materials, possessing fascinating shape and size-dependent properties such as high surface area, abundant active sites, well-defined crystal morphologies, and huge potential for surface functionalization. To date, numerous well designated MOFs have emerged as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with water environmental issues. Here we present the recent progress of MOF-based materials and their applications in the treatment of organic effluents. Firstly, several traditional and emerging synthesis strategies for MOF composites are introduced. Then, the structural and functional regulations of MOF composites are presented and analyzed. Finally, typical applications of MOF-based materials in treating organic effluents, including chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, and agricultural wastewaters are summarized. Overall, this review is anticipated to tailor design and regulation of MOF-based functional materials for boosting the performance of organic effluent remediation.

Amino-functionalized cellulose composite for efficient simultaneous adsorption of tetracycline and copper ions: Performance, mechanism and DFT study

A novel cellulose composite (denoted as PEI@MMA-1) with porous interconnected structure was prepared by adsorbing methyl cellulose (MC) onto microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cross-linking polyethyleneimine (PEI) with MCC by the action of epichlorohydrin, which had the excellent adsorption property, wettability and elasticity. The performances of PEI@MMA-1 composite for removing tetracycline (TC), Cu2+ and coexistent pollutant (TC and Cu2+ mixture) were systematically explored. For single TC or Cu2+ contaminant, the maximum adsorption capacities were 75.53 and 562.23 mg/g at 30 °C, respectively, while in the dual contaminant system, they would form complexes and Cu2+ could play a "bridge" role to remarkably promote the adsorption of TC with the maximum adsorption capacities of 281.66 and 253.58 mg/g for TC and Cu2+. In addition, the adsorption kinetics, isotherms and adsorption mechanisms of single-pollutant and dual-pollutant systems have been thoroughly investigated. Theoretical calculations indicated that the amide group of TC molecule with the assistance of Cu2+ interacted with the hydroxyl group of PEI@MMA-1 composite to enhance the TC adsorption capacity. Cycle regeneration and fixed bed column experiments revealed that the PEI@MMA-1 possessed the excellent stability and utility. Current PEI@MMA-1 cellulose composite exhibited a promising application for remediation of heavy metals and antibiotics coexistence wastewater.

Sustainable remediation of pesticide pollutants using covalent organic framework - A review on material properties, synthesis methods and application

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have emerged as a potential class of materials for a variety of applications in a wide number of sectors including power storage, environmental services, and biological applications due to their ordered and controllable porosity, large surface area, customizable structure, remarkable stability, and diverse electrical characteristics. COF have received a lot of attention in recent years in the field of environmental remediation, It also find its way to eliminate the emerging pollutant from the environment notably pesticide from polluted water. This review more concentrated on the application of COF in pesticide removal by modifying COF structure, COF synthesis and material properties. To increase the adsorption ability and selectivity of the material towards certain pesticides removal, the synthesis of COF involves organic linkers with various functional groups such as amine, carboxylic acid groups etc. The COF have a high degree of stability and endurance make them suitable for intermittent usage in water treatment applications. This review manifests the novel progress where modified COFs employed in a prominent manner to remove pesticides from polluted water. Some examples of COF application in the eradication of pesticides are triformyl phenylene framework functionalized with amine groups has capacity to remove up to 50 mg/l of Organophosphorus - chlorpyrifos. COF modified to improve their photocatalytic capacity to breakdown the pesticide under visible light irradiation. COF tetraphenyl ethylene linked with carboxylic acid group shows efficient photocatalytic degradation of 90% of organochlorine insecticide endosulfan when subjected to visible light. Atrazine and imidacloprid are reduced from 100 ppm to 1 ppm in aqueous solutions by COF based on high adsorption capacity. In addition, the strategies, technique, synthesis and functional group modification design of COF are discussed.

Green synthesis of silver and iron nano composites using aqueous extract of zanthoxylum armatum seeds and their application for removal of acid black 234 dye

Green nanotechnology has gained attraction in recent years due to the growing awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with traditional methods of nanomaterial synthesis. In the present study, nanocomposite (NCs) of silver and Iron were prepared using Zanthoxylum Armatum seeds aqueous extract which acts as a reducing, stabilizing, and capping agent. The synthesized NCs were characterized using UV/Vis Spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and EDX. The UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis of the NCs revealed the presence of a surface plasmonic resonance band occurring at 420 nm. Examination of the NCs through SEM demonstrated that they exhibited a nearly spherical morphology, with an average particle diameter measuring 54.8 nm. The crystalline nature of these NCs was verified through X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the calculation of crystallite size using the Scherrer-Debye equation yielded a value of 12.6 nm. The adsorption ability of newly synthesized nanocomposites was investigated against Acid Black 234 Dye. The results showed that a 0.5 g of NCs dose at pH 4 removed 99.3% of 10 mg/L of Acid Black 234 Dye within 60 min. Based on the findings of this research, it can be inferred that the that Ag-Fe NCs synthesized from Zanthoxylum Armatum seeds aqueous extract hold significant potential for addressing environmental pollution caused by Acid Black 234 Dye. The NCs were used as adsorbent for the removal of Acid Black 234 dye from the wastewater sample and showed 98% removal of dye from the commercial sample within 60 min. In this context, the research highlights that the environmentally friendly synthesis of Ag-Fe nanocrystals (Ag-Fe NCs) using Zanthoxylum Armatum as a mediator offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for mitigating environmental pollution.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Near-infrared-responsive CuS@Cu-MOF nanocomposite with high foliar retention and extended persistence for controlling strawberry anthracnose

Strawberry anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) exhibits a high pathogenicity, capable of directly infecting leaves through natural openings, resulting in devastating impacts on strawberries. Here, nanocomposite (CuS@Cu-MOF) was prepared with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 35.3% and a strong response to near-infrared light (NIR) by locally growing CuS nanoparticles on the surface of a copper-based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) through in situ sulfurization. The porosity of Cu-MOF facilitated efficient encapsulation of the pesticide difenoconazole within CuS@Cu-MOF (DIF/CuS@Cu-MOF), achieving a loading potential of 19.18 ± 1.07%. Under NIR light irradiation, DIF/CuS@Cu-MOF showed an explosive release of DIF, which was 2.7 times higher than that under dark conditions. DIF/CuS@Cu-MOF exhibited a 43.9% increase in efficacy against C. gloeosporioides compared to difenoconazole microemulsion (DIF ME), demonstrating prolonged effectiveness. The EC50 values for DIF and DIF/CuS@Cu-MOF were 0.219 and 0.189 μg/mL, respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscopy demonstrated that the fluorescently labeled CuS@Cu-MOF acted as a penetrative carrier for the uptake of hyphae. Furthermore, DIF/CuS@Cu-MOF exhibited more substantial resistance to rainwater wash-off than DIF ME, with retention levels on the surfaces of cucumber leaves (hydrophilicity) and peanut leaves (hydrophobicity) increasing by 36.5-fold and 9.4-fold, respectively. These findings underscore the potential of nanocomposite to enhance pesticide utilization efficiency and leaf retention.

Co-immobilizing laccase-mediator system by in-situ synthesis of MOF in PVA hydrogels for enhanced laccase stability and dye decolorization efficiency

The laccase mediator system (LMS) with a broad substrate range has attracted much attention as an efficient approach for water remediation. However, the practical application of LMS is limited due to their high solubility, poor stability and low reusability. Herein, the bimetallic Cu/ZIFs encapsulated laccase was in-situ grown in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer matrix. The PVA-Lac@Cu/ZIFs hydrogel was formed via one freeze-thawing cycle, and its catalytic stability was significantly improved. The mediator was further co-immobilized on the hydrogel, and this hierarchically co-immobilized ABTS/PVA-Lac@Cu/ZIFs hydrogel could avoid the continuous oxidation reaction between laccase and redox mediators. The co-immobilized LMS biocatalyst was used to degrade malachite green (MG), and the degradation rate was up to 100 % within 4 h. More importantly, the LMS could be recycled synchronously from the dye solutions and reused to degrade MG multiple times. The degradation rate remained above 69.4 % after five cycles. Furthermore, the intermediate products were detected via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the potential degradation pathways were proposed. This study demonstrated the significant potential of utilizing the MOF nanocrystals and hydrogel as a carrier for co-immobilized LMS, and the effective reuse of both laccase and mediator was promising for laccase application in wastewater treatment.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

Application of carbon-based adsorbents in the remediation of micro- and nanoplastics

Micro-nano plastics (MNPs) are emerging contaminants that can easily enter the food chain, posing risks to both the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Various physical, biological, and chemical methods have been explored to remove MNPs from water, and recently, adsorption technology has gained attention as an effective approach. Among the potential candidates, carbon-based adsorbent has emerged as a promising choice due to their low cost, eco-friendly nature, and sustainability. This paper summarizes recent advancements in MNP removal using carbon-based adsorbents, with a focus on the modification methods and adsorption mechanisms. Additionally, the factors influencing the adsorption performance and the methods for characterizing the adsorption mechanism are analyzed. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of carbon-based adsorbents over other adsorbents are discussed, along with the current state of sustainable recycling and future research prospects.

Highly ammonia-responsive starch/PVA film with gas absorption system as the 'bridge' for visually spoilage monitoring of animal-derived food

In the context of food waste and human diseases caused by food pollution, color renderement intelligent packaging came into being. Improving its indicator stability and sensitivity is essential for application. On the basis of our previous work, corn starch/polyvinyl alcohol was used as the matrix, the synthesized zirconium-based UiO-66 and anthocyanin-loaded ovalbumin-carboxymethylcellulose nanocomposites were embedded in to stabilize anthocyanins and improve gas adsorption performance of film. The study found that incorporating appropriate amount of UiO-66 (3%) in films resulted in uniform distribution and formation of holes. Mechanical properties, water stability and barrier properties were significantly improved, and gas adsorption capacity increased by approximately 10 times. More crucially, films that incorporate UiO-66 can react more quickly and visibly to lower concentrations of ammonia gas. The color change of SP/OVA-CMC-ACNs/3% UiO-66 film was noticeable (from purple to gray and then to green) when applied to monitor freshness of shrimp and pork.

Green synthesis of iron nanoparticles: Sources and multifarious biotechnological applications

Green synthesis of iron nanoparticles is a highly fascinating research area and has gained importance due to reliable, sustainable and ecofriendly protocol for synthesizing nanoparticles, along with the easy availability of plant materials and their pharmacological significance. As an alternate to physical and chemical synthesis, the biological materials, like microorganisms and plants are considered to be less costly and environment-friendly. Iron nanoparticles with diverse morphology and size have been synthesized using biological extracts. Microbial (bacteria, fungi, algae etc.) and plant extracts have been employed in green synthesis of iron nanoparticles due to the presence of various metabolites and biomolecules. Physical and biochemical properties of biologically synthesized iron nanoparticles are superior to that are synthesized using physical and chemical agents. Iron nanoparticles have magnetic property with thermal and electrical conductivity. Iron nanoparticles below a certain size (generally 10-20 nm), can exhibit a unique form of magnetism called superparamagnetism. They are non-toxic and highly dispersible with targeted delivery, which are suitable for efficient drug delivery to the target. Green synthesized iron nanoparticles have been explored for multifarious biotechnological applications. These iron nanoparticles exhibited antimicrobial and anticancerous properties. Iron nanoparticles adversely affect the cell viability, division and metabolic activity. Iron nanoparticles have been used in the purification and immobilization of various enzymes/proteins. Iron nanoparticles have shown potential in bioremediation of various organic and inorganic pollutants. This review describes various biological sources used in the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles and their potential applications in biotechnology, diagnostics and mitigation of environmental pollutants.

Metal-organic gels: recent advances in their classification, characterization, and application in the pharmaceutical field

Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are a type of functional soft substance with a three-dimensional (3D) network structure and solid-like rheological behavior, which are constructed by metal ions and bridging ligands formed under the driving force of coordination interactions or other non-covalent interactions. As the homologous substances of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and gels, they exhibit the potential advantages of high porosity, flexible structure, and adjustable mechanical properties, causing them to attract extensive research interest in the pharmaceutical field. For instance, MOGs are often used as excellent vehicles for intelligent drug delivery and programmable drug release to improve the clinical curative effect with reduced side effects. Also, MOGs are often applied as advanced biomedical materials for the repair and treatment of pathological tissue and sensitive detection of drugs or other molecules. However, despite the vigorous research on MOGs in recent years, there is no systematic summary of their applications in the pharmaceutical field to date. The present review systematically summarize the recent research progress on MOGs in the pharmaceutical field, including drug delivery systems, drug detection, pharmaceutical materials, and disease therapies. In addition, the formation principles and classification of MOGs are complemented and refined, and the techniques for the characterization of the structures/properties of MOGs are overviewed in this review.

Highly Sensitive Ratiometric Fluorescent Flexible Sensor Based on the RhB@ZIF-8@PVDF Mixed-Matrix Membrane for Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Detection

Antibiotics play an essential role in the treatment of various diseases. However, the overuse of antibiotics has led to the pollution of water bodies and food safety, affecting human health. Herein, we report a dual-emission MOF-based flexible sensor for the detection of antibiotics in water, which was prepared by first encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) by a zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-8) and then blending it with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). The luminescent properties, structural tunability, and flexible porosity of the MOF-based composites were combined with the processability and flexibility of polymers to prepare luminescent membranes. The sensor is capable of dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and oxytetracycline (OTC), exhibiting sensitive detection of fluorescence burst and fluorescence enhancement, respectively, with detection limits of 0.012 μM and 8.9 nM. With the advantages of visual detection, high sensitivity, short detection time, and simplicity, the highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent flexible sensor has great potential for detecting antibiotics in an aqueous environment. It will further stimulate interest in luminescent MOF-based mixed matrix membranes and their sensing applications.

Research progress of MOFs/carbon nanocomposites on promoting ORR in microbial fuel cell cathodes

With the rapid development of the economy, energy demand is more urgent. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have the advantages of non-toxic, safety, and environmental protection, and are considered the ideal choice for the next generation of energy storage equipment. However, the slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on MFC air cathodes and the high cost of traditional platinum (Pt) catalysts hinder their practical application, so there is a need to develop efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts as alternatives. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOFs) has attracted wide attention in electrocatalysis. Electrocatalysts prepared by the nanocomposite of MOFs and carbon nanomaterials have multiple advantages, such as adjustable chemical properties, high specific surface area, and good electrical conductivity, which have been proven to be a promising electrocatalytic material. In this paper, the latest research progress of metal-organic frames (MOFs) and carbon nanocomposites is reviewed, and the preparation methods and modification of MOFs and carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene composites are introduced, respectively, as well as their applications in MFC cathode. Finally, the main prospects of MOFs/carbon nanocomposite catalysts are put forward.

Facile adsorption of organophosphate pesticides over HKUST-1 MOFs

The recovery of organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) from aqueous solutions is imperative considering their agricultural and environmental implications. Among various mitigation approaches used for OPPs' removal, adsorption offers many advantageous features for OPPs abatement owing to its benign nature, cost-effective processing, and non-requirement of excessive equipment. This research describes the adsorptive removal of three organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) namely chlorpyrifos (CPF), methyl parathion (MP), and malathion (MAL) by HKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) metal-organic framework (MOF). The synthesis of HKUST-1 MOFs was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The adsorption kinetics was systematically investigated by varying three parameters to include solution pH, contact time, and initial pesticide concentration. Among all the three pesticides, HKUST-1 showed enhanced removal of CPF in terms of pH, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 1.82 mg·g-1. However, under the effect of contact time at 60 min, the adsorption capacity of HKUST-1 for PM, MAL, and CPF were computed to be 1.83, 1.79, and 0.44 mg·g-1, respectively. Besides, HKUST-1 showed a remarkable performance towards adsorptive removal of MAL (14.01 mg·g-1 at 10 mg·L-1 concentration) with linear increase in adsorption capacity as the function of initial pesticide concentration. The MOFs were also able to retain ca. 50% of their adsorption efficiency over the course of five cycles of adsorptive removal of CP. In the future, a comprehensive data table showing the performance of various MOFs against various OPPs can be constructed on the basis of parameters used in this study.

Reactivity of dissolved effluent organic matter (EfOM) with hydroxyl radical as a function of its isolated fractions during ozonation of municipal secondary effluent

Dissolved effluent organic matter (EfOM) plays an important role in ozonation decomposition and hydroxyl radical (·OH) scavenging in ozonation for the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in municipal secondary effluents. The properties of EfOM have been considered a major concern in this process because EfOM fractions act differently as initiator, promoter or inhibitor of ozone decomposition and ·OH scavenging, which further impacts the degradation effectiveness of TrOCs. This study isolated EfOM from three wastewater treatment plants into six fractions (HoA, HoB, HoN, HiA, HiB and HiN) to understand the reaction kinetics as a function of EfOM and its isolated fractions. Their reaction rate constants with ·OH (kEfOM-·OH), and their roles as the initiator, promoter and inhibitor in the ·OH chain reactions in ozone decomposition were further quantified. The results showed that kEfOM-·OH of hydrophilic fractions (HiF) (accounting for 17%) reached up to 10 times as high as that for hydrophobic fractions (HoF) (accounting for 83%) (7.92 × 108 M-1 s-1 versus 0.78 × 108 M-1 s-1), suggesting the dominating role of HiF in ·OH scavenging. Hydrophilic base (HiB) was the most important fraction dominating the ozone decomposition and reaction with ·OH due to its highest rate constants of initiation and promotion. This study quantifies the kinetics and contribution of EfOM fractions in ·OH scavenging, which will guide the optimization implementation of ozonation and other ·OH-mediated AOPs toward wastewater effluents.

Gel transformation as a general strategy for fabrication of highly porous multiscale MOF architectures

The structure and chemistry of metal-organic frameworks or MOFs dictate their properties and functionalities. However, their architecture and form are essential for facilitating the transport of molecules, the flow of electrons, the conduction of heat, the transmission of light, and the propagation of force, which are vital in many applications. This work explores the transformation of inorganic gels into MOFs as a general strategy to construct complex porous MOF architectures at nano, micro, and millimeter length scales. MOFs can be induced to form along three different pathways governed by gel dissolution, MOF nucleation, and crystallization kinetics. Slow gel dissolution, rapid nucleation, and moderate crystal growth result in a pseudomorphic transformation (pathway 1) that preserves the original network structure and pores, while a comparably faster crystallization displays significant localized structural changes but still preserves network interconnectivity (pathway 2). MOF exfoliates from the gel surface during rapid dissolution, thus inducing nucleation in the pore liquid leading to a dense assembly of percolated MOF particles (pathway 3). Thus, the prepared MOF 3D objects and architectures can be fabricated with superb mechanical strength (>98.7 MPa), excellent permeability (>3.4 × 10^-10 m²), and large surface area (1100 m² g^-1) and mesopore volumes (1.1 cm³ g^-1).

Efficient removal of veterinary drugs from aqueous solutions using magnetically separable carbonaceous materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks

Rapid synthesis of carbon-based magnetic materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZIF-67, and MIL-100(Fe), by microwave-assisted method, followed by carbonization under a N₂ atmosphere is described in this study. The carbon-derived MOFs (CDMs) were evaluated for the removal of the emerging pollutants sulfadiazine (SDZ) and flumequine (FLU) used as veterinary drugs. The study aimed to link the adsorption behavior with their surface properties and elemental composition. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100(Fe) showed hierarchical porous structures with specific surface areas of 295.6 and 163.4 m² g^-1, respectively. The Raman spectra of the CDMs show the characteristic D and G bands associated with defect-rich carbon and sp² graphitic carbon, respectively. The CDMs exhibit cobalt species (Co₃O₄, CoO, and Co) in C-ZIF-67 and iron species (Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and Fe) in C-MIL-100 (Fe) which are related to the magnetic behavior of CDMs. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) had saturation magnetization values of 22.9 and 53.7 emu g^-1, respectively, allowing easy solid-liquid separation using a magnet. SDZ and FLU removal rates on CDMs follow pseudo-second-order kinetics, and adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model based on regression coefficient values. Adsorption thermodynamics calculations showed that the adsorption of SDZ and FLU by CDMs was a thermodynamically favorable process. Therefore, these properties of C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) and their regeneration ability facilitate their use as adsorbents for emerging pollutants.

Surface-modified biopolymers for removing mixtures of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from water: Screening and removal mechanisms

Green, renewable, and sustainable materials are needed for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water. Herein, we synthesized and tested alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CTN) based and polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized fibers/aerogels for the adsorption of mixtures of 12 PFASs (9 short- and long-chain PFAAs, GenX, and 2 precursors) from water at an initial concentration of 10 μg/L each. Out of 11 biosorbents, ALGPEI-3 and GTH CTNPEI aerogels had the best sorption performance. Through detailed characterization of the sorbents before and after PFASs sorption, it was revealed that hydrophobic interaction was the dominant mechanism controlling PFASs sorption while electrostatic interactions played a minor role. As a result, both aerogels had fast and superior sorption of relatively hydrophobic PFASs from pH 2 to 10. Even at extreme pH conditions, the aerogels retained their shape perfectly. Based upon the isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity of ALGPEI-3 and GTH-CTNPEI aerogels towards total PFASs removal was 3045 and 12,133 mg/g, respectively. Although the sorption performance of the GTH-CTNPEI aerogel toward short chain PFAS was less than satisfactory and varied between 70 and 90% in 24 h, it may find its use in removing relatively hydrophobic PFAS at high concentrations in complex and extreme environments.

Synthesis of double-shelled periodic mesoporous organosilica nanospheres/MIL-88A-Fe composite and its elevated performance for Pb2+ removal in water

Herein, we report the synthesis of double-shelled periodic mesoporous organosilica nanospheres/MIL-88A-Fe (DSS/MIL-88A-Fe) composite through a hydrothermal method. To survey the structural and compositional features of the synthesized composite, a variety of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, BET, TEM, FE-SEM, EDX, and EDX-mapping, have been employed. A noteworthy point in this synthesis procedure is the integration of MOF with PMO to increase the adsorbent performance, such as higher specific surface area and more active sites. This combination leads to achieving a structure with an average size of 280 nm and 1.1 μm long attributed to DSS and MOF, respectively, microporous structure and relatively large specific surface area (312.87 m²/g). The as-prepared composite could be used as an effective adsorbent with a high adsorption capacity (250 mg/g) and quick adsorption time (30 min) for the removal of Pb²⁺ from water. Importantly, DSS/MIL-88A-Fe composite revealed acceptable recycling and stability, since the performance in Pb²⁺ removal from water remained above 70% even after 4 consecutive cycles.

Impact of historical legacy pesticides on achieving legislative goals in Europe

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to optimise food production. However, the movement of pesticides into water bodies negatively impacts aquatic environments. The European Union (EU) aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly through its current Farm to Fork strategy. As part of this strategy, the EU plans to reduce the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50 % by 2030. The attainment of this target may be compromised by the prevalence of legacy pesticides arising from historical applications to land, which can persist in the environment for several decades. The current EU Farm to Fork policy overlooks the potential challenges of legacy pesticides and requirements for their remediation. In this review, the current knowledge regarding pesticide use in Europe, as well as pathways of pesticide movement to waterways, are investigated. The issues of legacy pesticides, including exceedances, are examined, and existing and emerging methods of pesticide remediation, particularly of legacy pesticides, are discussed. The fact that some legacy pesticides can be detected in water samples, more than twenty-five years after they were prohibited, highlights the need for improved EU strategies and policies aimed at targeting legacy pesticides in order to meet future targets.

Green synthesis of Fe3O4@SiO2@Salg particles for organophosphorus pesticides removal: Mechanisms, biosafety, and application

A biosafe magnetic Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Salg (GMS) was successfully developed via a simple and economic method. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles were selected as the magnetic core, and they directly interacted with sodium alginate, thus mitigating the use of cross-linking agents. The microstructure, properties, and formation mechanism of GMS were examined using FE-SEM, TEM, VSM, TGA, zeta potential, and FT-IR. The as-developed GMS was used as a desirable adsorbent to remove organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) from water bodies, and the influence of different factors on the removal efficiencies of OPPs was investigated. Optimal preparation conditions were determined, and the excellent removal efficiencies of the 18 OPPs were achieved in this study (80.5%-100% for tap, river, and seawater). After the GMS was recycled eight times, the removal efficiencies of 18 OPPs were maintained at >80%. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models showed that the adsorption process was accurately fitted with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models. The values of ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were negative, indicating that the OPPs were adsorbed on the GMS spontaneously via an exothermal reaction, and chemisorption was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Overall, the as-developed GMS was biosafe as revealed by cytotoxicity experiments. GMS had good environmental security, stability, and reusability, and it exhibited excellent potential for removing OPPs from aqueous solutions without causing secondary pollution.

A fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman scattering dual-mode aptasensor for sensitive detection of deoxynivalenol based on gold nanoclusters and silver nanoparticles modified metal-polydopamine framework

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a common mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species, poses a great threat to human and animal body. Hence, it is of significance to develop an ultrasensitive and reliable method for DON detection. Herein, a fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (FL-SERS) dual-mode aptasensor was designed for the detection of DON based on gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) and silver nanoparticles modified metal-polydopamine framework (Ag NPs/MPDA). In this aptasensor, complementary DNA modified Au NCs (cDNA-Au NCs) was selected as fluorescence probe, and 6-carboxytetramethylrhodamine (TAMRA)-labeled aptamer modified Ag NPs/MPDA (Ag NPs/MPDA-Apt-TAMRA) was employed as SERS probe, in which Ag NPs/MPDA acted as SERS substance and fluorescence quencher, and TAMRA acted as Raman label. The superior binding affinity of the aptamer with DON to cDNA can regulate the fluorescence and Raman signal intensities and realize the quantitative determination of DON. Under the optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibited a low detection limit of 0.08 ng mL^-1 (0.1-100 ng mL^-1) in FL mode and 0.06 ng mL^-1 (0.1-100 ng mL^-1) in SERS mode. In addition, it was successfully applied for DON detection in wheat flour. We believe that the proposed FL-SERS strategy has a promising application in the detection of mycotoxins.

A pH- and enzymatic-responsive nanopesticide to control pea aphids and reduce toxicity for earthworms

Thiacloprid is a new chlorinated nicotinoid insecticide against stinging-oral pests, such as aphids. It is less toxic to bees but more toxic to earthworms. In this study, a pH- and amylase-responsive MOF (ZIF-8) was constructed for site-specific delivery of thiacloprid to control pea aphids and more safety for earthworms. Thiacloprid from α-cyclodextrin@Thiacloprid@ZIF-8 (α-CD@T@ZIF-8) could be released quickly in pea aphids, which was ascribed to disintegration of ZIF-8 at low pH values in pea aphid intestines and degradation of α-CD under the action of α-amylase. The release results showed a significant pH dependence of α-CD@T@ZIF-8, with an approximately 65 % release amount at pH = 7 and a 95 % release amount at pH = 5 for 7 d. The results of the pot experiment and biosafety showed that for α-CD@T@ZIF-8, 88 % pea aphids could be killed compared with 32 % aphids for commercially available formulation on the 7th day after application. Meanwhile the LC50 of thiacloprid OD was 0.034 μg/cm2 and the LC50 of α-CD@T@ZIF-8 was 0.564 μg/cm2 on earthworms, and it was more safety for pea and lower acute toxicity and enrichment for the earthworms. α-CD@T@ZIF-8 could be used for intelligently controlled release of other insecticides against aphids.

Highly efficient degradation of reactive black KN-B dye by ultraviolet light responsive ZIF-8 photocatalysts with different morphologies

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8, a type of metal-organic framework, has diverse applications in multiple catalytic fields due to its outstanding properties. Herein, ZIF-8 photocatalysts with three different morphologies (dodecahedral, pitaya-like, and leaf-like) are successfully synthesized under ambient conditions from zinc salts by altering the volume ratio of methanol and water used as a solvent. The as-synthesized ZIFs have high crystallinity with distinct BET surface areas. The experiments indicate that the ZIFs have high photocatalytic efficiency, in which the leaf-like structure (ZIF-8-F3) is the most efficient in the degradation of reactive black KN-B dye (RB5) under 365 nm UV irradiation. This is due to the efficient inhibition of electron-hole recombination or the higher migration of charge carriers in ZIF-8-F3, thus producing more reactive oxygen species, resulting in greater photocatalytic efficiency. At pH = 11, more than 95% of RB5 is degraded within 2 hours when using 1.0 g L^-1 of ZIF-8-F3. Besides, the photocatalytic and kinetic performances of ZIF-8-F3 are also investigated by optimizing the pH, initial RB5 concentration, and dosage of the used catalyst. These ZIF-8-F3 plates have been shown to be a promising material with high photostability and effective reusability, beneficial to various potential applications in environmental remediation issues.

A review on the applicability of adsorption techniques for remediation of recalcitrant pesticides

Pesticide has revolutionised the agricultural industry by reducing yield losses and by enhancing productivity. But indiscriminate usage of such chemicals can negatively impact human health and ecosystem balance as certain pesticides can be recalcitrant in nature. Out of some of the suggested sustainable techniques to remove the pesticide load from the environment, adsorption is found to be highly efficient and can also be implemented on a large scale. It has been observed that natural adsorption that takes place after the application of the pesticide is not enough to reduce the pesticide load, hence, adsorbents like activated carbon, plant-based adsorbents, agricultural by-products, silica materials, polymeric adsorbents, metal organic framework etc are being experimented upon. It is becoming increasingly important to choose adsorbents which will not leave any secondary pollutant after treatment and the cost of production of such adsorbent should be feasible. In this review paper, it has been established that certain adsorbent like biochar, hydrochar, resin, metal organic framework etc can efficiently remove pesticides namely chlorpyrifos, diazinon, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid, atrazine, fipronil, imidacloprid etc. The mechanism of adsorption, thermodynamics and kinetic part have been discussed in detail with respect to the pesticide and adsorbent under discussion. The reason behind choosing an adsorbent for the removal of a particular pesticide have also been explained. It is further highly recommended to carry out a cost analysis before implementing an absorbent because inspite of its efficacy, it might not be cost effective to use it for a particular type of pesticide or contaminant.

Recent advances in application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbent and catalyst in removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the aquatic environment is causing widespread concern due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and possible environmental risk. These contaminants are produced daily in large quantities and released into water bodies. Traditional wastewater treatment plants are ineffective at degrading these pollutants. As a result, the development of long-term and effective POP removal techniques is critical. In water, adsorption removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs have been identified as energy and cost-efficient solutions. Both technologies have received a lot of attention for their efforts to treat the world's wastewater. Photocatalytic removal of POPs is a promising, effective, and long-lasting method, while adsorption removal of persistent POPs represents a simple, practical method, particularly in decentralized systems and isolated areas. It is critical to develop new adsorbents/photocatalysts with the desired structure, tunable chemistry, and maximum adsorption sites for highly efficient removal of POPs. As a class of recently created multifunctional porous materials, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tremendous prospects in adsorptive removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs for water remediation. This review defines POPs and discusses current research on adsorptive and photocatalytic POP removal using emerging MOFs for each type of POPs.

A comprehensive review of hydrophobic silica and composite aerogels: synthesis, properties and recent progress towards environmental remediation and biomedical applications

The hydrophobicity of silica and composite aerogels has enabled them to acquire applications in a variety of fields. With remarkable structural, morphological, and physiochemical properties such as high porosity, surface area, chemical stability, and selectivity, these materials have gained much attention of researchers worldwide. Moreover, the hydrophobic conduct has enabled these aerogels to adsorb substances, i.e., organic pollutants, without collapsing the pore and network structure. Hence, considering such phenomenal properties and great adsorption potential, exploiting these materials for environmental and biomedical applications is trending. The present study explores the most recent advances in synthetic approaches and resulting properties of hydrophobic silica and composite aerogels. It presents the various precursors and co-precursors used for hydrophobization and gives a comparative analysis of drying methods. Moreover, as a major focus, the work presents the recent progress where these materials have shown promising results for various environmental remediation and biomedical applications. Finally, the bottlenecks in synthesis and applicability along with future prospects are given in conclusions.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Potential Agents for Extraction and Delivery of Pesticides and Agrochemicals

Pesticide contamination is a global issue, affecting nearly 44% of the global farming population, and disproportionately affecting farmers and agricultural workers in developing countries. Despite this, global pesticide usage is on the rise, with the growing demand of global food production with increasing population. Different types of porous materials, such as carbon and zeolites, have been explored for the remediation of pesticides from the environment. However, there are some limitations with these materials, especially due to lack of functional groups and relatively modest surface areas. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide us with a better alternative to conventionally used porous materials due to their versatile and highly porous structure. Recently, a number of MOFs have been studied for the extraction of pesticides from the environment as well as for targeted and controlled release of agrochemicals. Different types of pesticides and conditions have been investigated, and MOFs have proved their potential in agricultural applications. In this review, the latest studies on delivery and extraction of pesticides using MOFs are systematically reviewed, along with some recent studies on greener ways of pest control through the slow release of chemical compounds from MOF composites. Finally, we present our insights into the key issues concerning the development and translational applications of using MOFs for targeted delivery and pesticide control.

Metolachlor metal-organic framework nanoparticles for reducing leaching, ecotoxicity and improving bioactivity

BACKGROUND

The adverse effects of pesticides has led to a series of ecological, environmental and public health issues. Amide herbicides are an important agrochemical, yet many are prone to leach and pollute the environment, which limits their further application. In this study, metolachlor (METO) was selected as a model pesticide and a controlled released nanoparticle (NP) system was constructed employing a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 hybrid inorganic-organic porous material (METO@ZIF-8).

RESULTS

The synthesis parameters of METO@ZIF-8 were optimized, and the loading content of METO@ZIF-8 was maximized by a central composite design of response surface test. The NPs were regular dodecahedron with uniform size (mostly 54.3 nm diameter). METO@ZIF-8 had high specific surface area and good dispersal in water. Moreover, it endowed the active ingredient with a pH-responsive release property. The nanocarrier effectively improved the adsorption capacity of METO in soil and reduce the leaching by 10.3-21.7%. Pot experiments suggested that the control effect of METO@ZIF-8 was 16.6 and 48.4% higher than that of METO emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and METO technical concentration (TC) at the recommended dose. Based on the excellent controlled release profiles, METO@ZIF-8 did not affect corn plant growth and significantly reduced the risk of phytotoxicity induced by METO. METO@ZIF-8 effectively reduced acute toxicity in zebrafish compared with METO EC.

CONCLUSION

This study explored the fabrication of a nanocarrier for improving the efficacy and promoting the environmental safety of leachable amide herbicides. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes and Their Application in Food Safety Analysis: Recent Developments and Future Prospects

Food safety issues are a major threat to public health and have attracted much attention. Therefore, exploring accurate, efficient, sensitive, and economical detection methods is necessary to ensure consumers' health. In this regard, cyclodextrins (CDs) are promising candidates because they are nontoxic and noncaloric. The main body of CDs is a ring structure with hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic exterior wall. Due to the above characteristics, CDs can encapsulate small guest molecules into their cavities, enhance their stability, avoid agglomeration and oxidation, and, at the same time, interact through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, they can selectively capture the target molecules to be detected and improve the sensitivity of food detection. This review highlights recent advances in CD inclusion technology in food safety analysis, covering various applications from small molecule and heavy metal sensing to amino acid and microbial sensing. Finally, challenges and prospects for CDs and their derivatives are presented. The current review can provide a reference and guidance for current research on CDs in the food industry and may inspire breakthroughs in this field.

Nickel and iron-based metal-organic frameworks for removal of organic and inorganic model contaminants

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of porous nanomaterials in the field of environmental remediation. Ni-MOF and Fe-MOF were chosen for their advantages such as structural robustness and ease of synthesis route. The structure of prepared MOFs was characterized using FE-SEM, XRD, FTIR, and N₂ adsorption-desorption. The efficiency of MOFs to remove organic model contaminants (anionic Alizarin Red S (ARS) and cationic malachite green (MG) and inorganic fluoride was studied. Fe-MOF and Ni-MOF adsorbed 67, 88, 6% and 32, 5, and 9% of fluoride, ARS, and MG, respectively. Further study on ARS adsorption by Fe-MOF showed that the removal efficiency was high in a wide range of pH from 3 to 9. Moreover, dye removal was directly increased by adsorbent mass (0.1-0.75 g/L) and decreased by ARS concentration (25-100 mg/L). The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a q_max of 176.68 mg/g described the experimental data well. The separation factor, K_L, was in the range of 0-1, which means the adsorption process was favorable. In conclusion, Fe-MOF showed remarkable adsorption of organic and inorganic model contaminants.

Fast-thermoresponsive carboxylated carbon nanotube/chitosan aerogels with switchable wettability for oil/water separation

The use of aerogels to selectively recover oil from oily wastewater is effective but challenging. In this study, a new carboxylated carbon nanotube/chitosan aerogel (CCNT/CA) with switchable wettability was developed as a smart adsorbent for fast oil absorption and oil recovery. Vinyltrimethoxysilane and thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was grafted onto the surface of the CCNT/CA skeleton, and the resulting smart aerogel (PNI-Si@CCNT/CA) exhibited temperature responsiveness. PNI-Si@CCNT/CA exhibited an excellent reversible conversion between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity when the temperature was changed to below or above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAm (~32 °C). Most importantly, CCNT significantly increased the oil absorption capacity, improved the mechanical properties, accelerated phonon conduction, enhanced thermal conductivity (80.57 mW m^-1 K^-1), improved the temperature response rate, shortened the oil desorption time (15 min), and improved the oil/water separation efficiency of PNI-Si@CCNT/CA because a strong interface interaction occurred between CCNT and chitosan. Moreover, PNI-Si@CCNT/CA absorbed oil at 45 °C and released the absorbed oil at 25 °C. It maintained its good adsorption performance after 15 cycles, and this was ascribed to its excellent mechanical properties and stable structure.

Advanced MOFs@aerogel composites: Construction and application towards environmental remediation

Environmental pollution has drawn forth advanced materials and progressive techniques concentrating on sustainable development. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have aroused vast interest resulting from their excellent property in structure and function. Conversely, powdery MOFs in highly crystalline follow with fragility, poor processability and recoverability. Aerogels distinguished by the unique three-dimensional (3D) interconnected pore structures with high porosity and accessible surface area are promising carriers for MOFs. Given these, combining MOFs with aerogels at molecule level to obtain advanced composites is excepted to further enhance their performance with higher practicability. Herein, we focus on the latest studies on the MOFs@aerogel composites. The construction of MOFs@aerogel with different synthetic routes and drying methods are discussed. To explore the connection between structure and performance, pore structure engineering and quantitation of MOFs content are outlined. Furthermore, various types of MOFs@aerogel composites and their carbonized derivatives are reviewed, as well as the applications of MOFs@aerogel for environmental remediation referring to water purification and air clearing. More importantly, outlooks towards these emerging advanced composites have been presented from the perspective of practical application and future development.

Superelastic and Photothermal RGO/Zr-Doped TiO2 Nanofibrous Aerogels Enable the Rapid Decomposition of Chemical Warfare Agents

To date, the reckless use of deadly chemical warfare agents (CWAs) has posed serious risks to humanity, property, and ecological environment. Therefore, necessary materials able to rapidly adsorb and securely decompose these hazardous toxics are in urgent demand. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide/Zr-doped TiO₂ nanofibrous aerogels (RGO/ZT NAs) are synthesized by feasibly combining sol-gel electrospinning technology and a unidirectional freeze-drying approach. Benefiting from the synergetic coassembly of flexible ZT nanofibers and pliable RGO nanosheets, the hierarchically entangled fibrous frameworks feature ultralow density, superior elasticity, and robust fatigue resistance over 10⁶ compressive cycles. In particular, the RGO incorporation is attributed to the achieved increased surface area, stronger light absorption, and decreased recombination of charge-carriers for photocatalysis. The highly porous 3D RGO/ZT NAs deliver enhanced photothermal catalytic activity for CWA degradation as well as excellent recyclability and good photostability. This work opens fresh horizons for developing advanced 3D aerogel-based photocatalysts in a controlled fashion.

Recent progress in organic-inorganic hybrid materials as absorbents in sample pretreatment for pesticide detection

Sample pretreatment is essential for trace analysis of pesticides in complex food and environment matrices. Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid materials have gained increasing attention in pesticide extraction and preconcentration. This review highlighted the common organic-inorganic hybrid materials used as absorbents in sample pretreatment for pesticide detection. Furthermore, the preparation and characterization of organic-inorganic hybrid materials were summarized. To obtain a deep understanding of adsorption toward target analytes, the adsorption mechanism and absorption evaluation were discussed. Finally, the applications of organic-inorganic hybrid materials in sample pretreatment techniques and perspectives in the future are also discussed.

Site-Specific Controlled-Release Imidazolate Framework-8 for Dazomet Smart Delivery to Improve the Effective Utilization Rate and Reduce Biotoxicity

An accurate controlled-release strategy of pesticides is considered desirable in sustainable agriculture. A site-specific nanorelease system of dazomet (DZ) was proposed by employing the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 composite (DZ@ZIF-8) by a one-pot method. The synthetic parameters of DZ@ZIF-8 were optimized, and the loading content of DZ was maximized. ZIF-8 endowed DZ with a pH-sensitive behavior. The collapse of the DZ@ZIF-8 structure and the site-specific release of DZ were triggered by acidic substances produced by Botrytis cinerea. In vitro and pot experiments showed that the fungicidal activity of DZ@ZIF-8 was about 36.3 and 42.7% higher than that of DZ, respectively. DZ is conventionally used before a crop is planted because of its volatility and toxicity. However, DZ@ZIF-8 could avoid phytotoxicity of DZ to plants, which made the application of DZ possible during plant growth. Moreover, the acute toxicity to zebrafish changed from high to moderate levels. This study highlights a potential strategy that improves DZ effective utilization and reduces side effects.

Smart MOF-on-MOF Hydrogel as a Simple Rod-shaped Core for Visual Detection and Effective Removal of Pesticides

The immoderate use of pesticides in the modern agricultural industry has led to the pollution of water resources and ultimately threatens the human body. Herein, two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Zn(tpt)₂ ·2H₂ O]}_n (Zn1) and {[Zn₂ (tpt)₂ (bdc)]}_n (Zn2), (Htpt = 5-[4(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)]phenyl-2H-tetrazole), respectively, are constructed as smart materials for visual and on-site detection of pesticides and their removal from water. The exposed nitrogen-rich sites and high chemical stability make Zn2 a self-assembly core to further fabricate MOF-on-MOF-sodium alginate (ZIF-8-on-Zn2@SA) composite by wrapping ZIF-8 on the outside surface. Inheriting the excellent fluorescent emission of Zn2, the rod-like ZIF-8-on-Zn2@SA module exhibits naked-eye detection of thiophanate-methyl (TM) in real fruits and vegetables with a broad linear range (10-100 × 10^-6  m), a low limit of detection (LOD = 0.14 × 10^-6  m), and satisfactory recoveries (98.30-102.70%). In addition, carbendazim (CBZ), the metabolite of TM after usage in crops, can be efficiently removed from water by the ZIF-8-on-Zn2@SA (q_max  = 161.8 mg g^-1 ) with a high correlation coefficient (R²  > 0.99). Therefore, the portable ZIF-8-on-Zn2@SA sensing platform presents a promising candidate for monitoring and removal of pesticides, especially suitable for regions with serious pesticide environmental pollution.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Agriculture

Agrochemicals, which are crucial to meet the world food qualitative and quantitative demand, are compounds used to kill pests (insects, fungi, rodents, or unwanted plants). Regrettably, there are some important issues associated with their widespread and extensive use (e.g., contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistance); thus, a reduced and more controlled use of agrochemicals and thorough detection in food, water, soil, and fields are necessary. In this regard, the development of new functional materials for the efficient application, detection, and removal of agrochemicals is a priority. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with exceptional sorptive, recognition capabilities, and catalytical properties have very recently shown their potential in agriculture. This Review emphasizes the recent advances in the use of MOFs in agriculture through three main views: environmental remediation, controlled agrochemical release, and detection of agrochemicals.
