A critical review on bismuth oxyhalide based photocatalysis for pharmaceutical active compounds degradation: Modifications, reactive sites, and challenges

Semirational Design Strategy To Enhance the Thermostability and Catalytic Activity of Cytochrome P450 105D7 for the Degradation of the Pharmaceutically Active Compounds: Diclofenac

Pharmaceutically active compounds are an important category of emerging pollutants, and their biological transformation processes in the environment are crucial for understanding and evaluating the migration, transformation, and environmental fate of emerging pollutants. The cytochrome P450 105 enzyme family has been proven to play an important role in the degradation of exogenous environmental pollutants. However, its thermostability and catalytic activity still need to be improved to better adapt to complex environmental conditions. This work elucidates the key mechanisms and important residues of the degradation reaction through multiple computational strategies, establishes a mutation library, and obtains 21 single-point mutation designs. Experimental verification showed that 16 single mutants had enhanced thermostability, with the R89F and L197Y mutants showing the highest increases in thermostability at 135 and 119% relative to the wild-type enzyme, respectively. Additionally, as a result of the higher specific activity of D390Q, it was selected for combination mutagenesis, ultimately resulting in three combination mutants (R89F/L197Y, R89F/D390Q, and R89F/L197Y/D390Q) with enhanced thermostability and catalytic activity. This study provides a modification approach for constructing efficient enzyme variants through semirational design and can contribute to the development of control technologies for emerging pollutants.

Photocatalytic systems: reactions, mechanism, and applications

The photocatalytic field revolves around the utilization of photon energy to initiate various chemical reactions using non-adsorbing substrates, through processes such as single electron transfer, energy transfer, or atom transfer. The efficiency of this field depends on the capacity of a light-absorbing metal complex, organic molecule, or substance (commonly referred to as photocatalysts or PCs) to execute these processes. Photoredox techniques utilize photocatalysts, which possess the essential characteristic of functioning as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent upon activation. In addition, it is commonly observed that photocatalysts exhibit optimal performance when irradiated with low-energy light sources, while still retaining their catalytic activity under ambient temperatures. The implementation of photoredox catalysis has resuscitated an array of synthesis realms, including but not limited to radical chemistry and photochemistry, ultimately affording prospects for the development of the reactions. Also, photoredox catalysis is utilized to resolve numerous challenges encountered in medicinal chemistry, as well as natural product synthesis. Moreover, its applications extend across diverse domains encompassing organic chemistry and catalysis. The significance of photoredox catalysts is rooted in their utilization across various fields, including biomedicine, environmental pollution management, and water purification. Of course, recently, research has evaluated photocatalysts in terms of cost, recyclability, and pollution of some photocatalysts and dyes from an environmental point of view. According to these new studies, there is a need for critical studies and reviews on photocatalysts and photocatalytic processes to provide a solution to reduce these limitations. As a future perspective for research on photocatalysts, it is necessary to put the goals of researchers on studies to overcome the limitations of the application and efficiency of photocatalysts to promote their use on a large scale for the development of industrial activities. Given the significant implications of the subject matter, this review seeks to delve into the fundamental tenets of the photocatalyst domain and its associated practical use cases. This review endeavors to demonstrate the prospective of a powerful tool known as photochemical catalysis and elucidate its underlying tenets. Additionally, another goal of this review is to expound upon the various applications of photocatalysts.

Dimension-controlled synthesis of BiOI for efficient visible light photodegradation of tetracycline: role of pore structure

The transformation of photogenerated charge carriers (PC) in variable dimensional photocatalyst plays a pivotal role in unraveling the generation of reactive species (RS). However, the dimensional structure-activity relationship in photocatalysis remains elusive, with limited insights into its intricacies. Herein, we report a controlled synthesis strategy by using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted precipitation method for BiOI photocatalyst. Due to the steric hindrance of PVP, the 3D microsphere (3D-PVP0.5) and porous structure (3D-PVP1) of BiOI catalysts have been successfully prepared at room temperature. The 3D-PVP1 photocatalyst contains abundant mesopores and larger pores, which significantly shorten the diffusion distance of PC. Also, these PC in porous structure is beneficial for transferring from the inner phase to the surface of materials. Combined with optical property and radicals trapping experiments, the recombination rate of PC in porous structure performs a significant decrease, leading to the generation of more dominated ROS (•O2- and h+). The •O2- played a dominated role (86.98% of contribution rate) in photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) in 3D-PVP1 photocatalytic process. Compared with 2D nanosheet of BiOI (16.7% removal rate of TC), the as-prepared 3D porous structure of BiOI catalyst exhibits unique stable and high removal capacities (90.5%) for TC photodegradation under visible light irradiation. The kobs of 3D-PVP1 photocatalyst increased by 5.1 times than that of 2D nanosheet. To investigate its practical application, the effects of inorganic anions and pH have been systematically studied. This work sheds light on the design of variable dimension BiOI catalyst and provides more insight into the transfer mechanism of PC.

Machine learning analysis to interpret the effect of the photocatalytic reaction rate constant (k) of semiconductor-based photocatalysts on dye removal

Photocatalytic reactions with semiconductor-based photocatalysts have been investigated extensively for application to wastewater treatment, especially dye degradation, yet the interactions between different process parameters have rarely been reported due to their complicated reaction mechanisms. Hence, this study aims to discern the impact of each factor, and each interaction between multiple factors on reaction rate constant (k) using a decision tree model. The dyes selected as target pollutants were indigo and malachite green, and 5 different semiconductor-based photocatalysts with 17 different compositions were tested, which generated 34 input features and 1527 data points. The Boruta Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) feature selection for the 34 inputs found that 11 inputs were significantly important. The decision tree model exhibited for 11 input features with an R2 value of 0.94. The SHAP feature importance analysis suggested that photocatalytic experimental conditions, with an importance of 59%, was the most important input category, followed by atomic composition (39%) and physicochemical properties (2%). Additionally, the effects on k of the synergy between the metal cocatalysts and important experimental conditions were confirmed by two feature SHAP dependence plots, regardless of importance order. This work provides insight into the single and multiple factors that affect reaction rate and mechanism.

Iron-doped bismuth oxybromides as visible-light-responsive Fenton catalysts for the degradation of atrazine in aqueous phases

Pesticides and its degradation products, being well-known residues in soil, have recently been detected in many water bodies as pollutants of emerging concerns, and thus there is a contemporary demand to develop viable and cost-effective techniques for the removal of related organic pollutants in aqueous phases. Herein, a visible-light-responsive Fenton system was constructed with iron-doped bismuth oxybromides (Fe-BiOBr) as the catalysts. Taking the advantage of sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion and optimized H2O2 utilization, the optimal Fe-BiOBr-2 catalyst showed an excellent atrazine removal efficiency of 97.61% in 120 min, which is superior than the traditional homogeneous Fenton and the majority of heterogeneous processes documented in the literature. In this photo-Fenton system, hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide (·O2-) radicals were dominant active species contributed to the oxidative degradation of atrazine. Due to the production of various active radicals, five degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of intermediates and degradation products. Overall, this work not only demonstrates a fundamental insight into creating highly efficient and atom economic photo-Fenton systems, but also provides a complementary strategy for the treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Recent advances of modification effect in Co3O4-based catalyst towards highly efficient photocatalysis

Tricobalt tetroxide (Co3O4) has been developed as a promising photocatalyst material for various applications. Several reports have been published on the self-modification of Co3O4 to achieve optimal photocatalytic performance. The pristine Co3O4 alone is inadequate for photocatalysis due to the rapid recombination process of photogenerated (PG) charge carriers. The modification of Co3O4 can be extended through the introduction of doping elements, incorporation of supporting materials, surface functionalization, metal loading, and combination with other photocatalysts. The addition of doping elements and support materials may enhance the photocatalysis process, although these modifications have a slight effect on decreasing the recombination process of PG charge carriers. On the other hand, combining Co3O4 with other semiconductors results in a different PG charge carrier mechanism, leading to a decrease in the recombination process and an increase in photocatalytic activity. Therefore, this work discusses recent modifications of Co3O4 and their effects on its photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the modification effects, such as enhanced surface area, generation of oxygen vacancies, tuning the band gap, and formation of heterojunctions, are reviewed to demonstrate the feasibility of separating PG charge carriers. Finally, the formation and mechanism of these modification effects are also reviewed based on theoretical and experimental approaches to validate their formation and the transfer process of charge carriers.

Critical review on modified floating photocatalysts for emerging contaminants removal from landscape water: problems, methods and mechanism

Due to the disorderly discharge in modern production and daily life of people, emerging contaminants(ECs) began to appear in landscape water, and have become a key public concern. Because of the unique characteristics of landscape water, it is difficult to efficiently remove ECs either by natural purification or by traditional large-scale sewage treatment facilities. The ideal purification method is to remove them while maintaining a beautiful environment. Possessing the feature of low-density, floating photocatalysts could harvest sufficient light on the surface of the water for photocatalytic degradation, which may be an important supplement for ECs treatment in landscape water. This paper gave a review related to floating photocatalysts and proposed an idea of combining floating photocatalysts to construct bionic photocatalytic materials for contaminative landscape water treatment. Six types of common floating substrates and corresponding applications for floating photocatalysts were concluded in this paper, and the main problem leading to the low efficiency of photocatalysts and three corresponding three improvement strategies were discussed. Besides, the modification mechanisms of photocatalysts were discussed thoroughly. On this basis, the engineering application prospects of bionic photocatalytic materials were proposed to remove ECs in landscape water.

Pharmaceutical residues in the ecosystem: Antibiotic resistance, health impacts, and removal techniques

Hospital wastewater has emerged as a major category of environmental pollutants over the past two decades, but its prevalence in freshwater is less well documented than other types of contaminants. Due to compound complexity and improper operations, conventional treatment is unable to remove pharmaceuticals from hospital wastewater. Advanced treatment technologies may eliminate pharmaceuticals, but there are still concerns about cost and energy use. There should be a legal and regulatory framework in place to control the flow of hospital wastewater. Here, we review the latest scientific knowledge regarding effective pharmaceutical cleanup strategies and treatment procedures to achieve that goal. Successful treatment techniques are also highlighted, such as pre-treatment or on-site facilities that control hospital wastewater where it is used in hospitals. Due to the prioritization, the regulatory agencies will be able to assess and monitor the concentration of pharmaceutical residues in groundwater, surface water, and drinking water. Based on the data obtained, the conventional WWTPs remove 10-60% of pharmaceutical residues. However, most PhACs are eliminated during the secondary or advanced therapy stages, and an overall elimination rate higher than 90% can be achieved. This review also highlights and compares the suitability of currently used treatment technologies and identifies the merits and demerits of each technology to upgrade the system to tackle future challenges. For this reason, pharmaceutical compound rankings in regulatory agencies should be the subject of prospective studies.

Recent advancements in the fabrication and photocatalytic applications of graphitic carbon nitride-tungsten oxide nanocomposites

The present review focuses on the widely used graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-tungsten oxide (WO3) nanocomposite in photocatalytic applications. These catalysts are widely employed due to their easy preparation, high physicochemical stability, nontoxicity, electron-rich properties, electronic band structure, chemical stability, low cost, earth-abundance, high surface area, and strong absorption capacity in the visible range. These sustainable properties make them predominantly attractive and unique from other photocatalysts. In addition, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is synthesized from nitrogen-rich precursors; therefore, it is stable in strong acid solutions and has good thermal stability up to 600 °C. This review covers the historical background, crystalline phases, density-functional theory (DFT) study, synthesis method, 0-D, 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D materials, oxides/transition/nontransition metal-doped, characterization, and photocatalytic applications of WO3/g-C3N4. Enhancing the catalytic performance strategies such as composite formation, element-doping, heterojunction construction, and nanostructure design are also summarized. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges for WO3/g-C3N4 composite materials are discussed to motivate young researchers and scientists interested in developing environment-friendly and efficient catalysts.

Constructing BiOBr1-xIx-y with Abundant Surface Br Vacancies for Excellent Visible-Light Photodegradation Capability of High-Concentration Refractory Contaminants

Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) is a promising photocatalytic semiconductor material due to its unique hierarchical structure and band structure. However, its photocatalytic applications are restricted due to its narrow visible-light absorption range and poor photooxidation capability. In this study, BiOBr1-xIx-y with rich surface Br vacancies (BrVs-rich BiOBr1-xIx-y) was created via a facile indirect substitution strategy. Benefiting from the broadened visible-light response range and reduced recombination rate of photogenerated carriers, BiOBr1-xIx-y shows excellent visible-light photodegradation ability for high-concentration refractory contaminants, such as phenol, tetracycline, bisphenol A, rhodamine B, methyl orange, and even real wastewater. At the same time, the Br vacancies can regulate the band structure of BiOBr1-xIx-y and serve as trap states to promote charge separation, thus facilitating surface photoredox reactions. An in-depth investigation of the Br vacancy effect and photodegradation mechanism was conducted. This novel study revealed the significance of Br vacancies in enhancing the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr under visible light, providing a promising strategy for improving the utilization efficiency of sunlight in wastewater treatment.

Construction of S-Scheme 2D/2D Crystalline Carbon Nitride/BiOIO3 van der Waals Heterojunction for Boosted Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics

Utilization of semiconductor photocatalyst materials to degrade pollutants for addressing environmental pollution problems has become a research focus in recent years. In this work, a 2D/2D S-scheme crystalline carbon nitride (CCN)/BiOIO₃ (BOI) van der Waals heterojunction was successfully constructed for effectively enhancing the degradation efficiency of antibiotic contaminant. The as-synthesized optimal CCN/BOI-3 sample exhibited the highest efficiency of 80% for the photo-degradation of tetracycline (TC, 20 mg/L) after 120 min visible light irradiation, which was significantly higher than that of pure CCN and BOI. The significant improvement in photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to two aspects: (i) the 2D/2D van der Waals heterojunction can accelerate interface carriers' separation and transfer and afford sufficient active sites; (ii) the S-scheme heterojunction elevated the redox capacity of CCN/BOI, thus providing a driving force for the degradation reaction. The degradation pathways of TC for the CCN/BOI composite were investigated in detail by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. This work provides a design idea for the development of efficient photocatalysts based on the 2D/2D S-scheme van der Waals heterojunctions.

Low bandgap high entropy alloy for visible light-assisted photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutically active compounds: Performance assessment and mechanistic insights

The incessant accumulation of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in various environmental compartments represents a global menace. Herein, an equimolar high entropy alloy (HEA), i.e., FeCoNiCuZn, is synthesized via a facile and scalable method, and its effectiveness in eliminating four different PhACs from aqueous matrices is rigorously examined. Attributing to its relatively low bandgap and multielement active sites, the as-synthesized quinary HEA demonstrates more pronounced photocatalytic decomposition efficiency, towards tetracycline (86%), sulfamethoxazole (94%), ibuprofen (80%), and diclofenac (99%), than conventional semiconductor-based photocatalysts, under visible light irradiation. Additionally, radical trapping assays are conducted, and the dissociation intermediates are identified, to probe the plausible photocatalytic degradation pathways. Further, the end-products of FeCoNiCuZn-mediated photocatalysis are apparently non-toxic, and the HEA can be successfully recycled repeatedly, with no obvious leaching of heavy metal ions. Overall, the findings of this study testify the applicability of FeCoNiCuZn as a visible light-active photocatalyst, for treating wastewaters contaminated with PhACs.

Deciphering the photoactive species-directed antibacterial mechanism of bismuth oxychloride with modulated nanoscale thickness

As an environmentally benign disinfection strategy, photocatalytic bacterial inactivation using nanoparticles involves photogenerated reactive species that cause cellular oxidative stress. Rationalising the structural performance of photocatalysts for the practical uses such as wastewater treatment has attracted significant attention; however, the contribution of reactive species to their photocatalytic antibacterial activities at the molecular and transcriptomic levels remains unclear. In this study, nontoxic bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) photocatalysts with different nanoscale thicknesses, including nanosheets (Ns, ∼5.4 nm), nanoplates (Np, ∼1.8 nm), and ultra-nanosheets (Uns, ∼1.1 nm), were synthesised under hydrothermal conditions. Among the three samples, BiOCl Uns exhibited the most effective photocatalytic degradation efficiency with the calculated apparent rate constant of 0.0294 min^-1, ∼4 times faster than that of Ns, whereas BiOCl Ns possessed the most pronounced bactericidal effect (5.4 log inactivation). Such findings indicate the distinct role of the photoactive species responsible for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation. Moreover, transcriptome analysis of Escherichia coli after photocatalytic treatment revealed that the underlying photocatalytic antibacterial mechanism at the genetic expression level involves cellular component biosynthesis, energy metabolism, and material transportation. Notably, the differences between BiOCl Ns and BiOCl Uns were significantly enriched in purine metabolism. Therefore, the cost-effective preparation of BiOCl nanosheets with nanoscale thickness-modulated photocatalytic antibacterial activity has remarkable potential for sustainable environmental and biomedical applications.

The Solid-State Synthesis of BiOIO3 Nanoplates with Boosted Photocatalytic Degradation Ability for Organic Contaminants

BiOIO₃ exhibits excellent oxidation capacity in the photocatalytic degradation of contaminants thanks to its unique polarized electric and internal electrostatic field. However, the synthetic method of BiOIO₃ nanomaterials is mainly focused on hydrothermal technology, owing to its high energy consumption and time-consuming nature. In this work, a BiOIO₃ nanosheet was prepared by a simple solid-state chemical reaction, which was identified by XRD, EDS, XPS, and HRTEM. Benefiting from the strong oxidation ability of the valence band maximum, the distinctive layer structure, and the promoted generation of ·O₂^-, the BiOIO₃ nanosheet exhibits excellent photo-degradation activity for methyl orange (MO) and its apparent rate constant is 0.2179 min^-1, which is about 3.02, 8.60, and 10.26 times higher than that of P25, BiOCl, and Bi₂O₂CO₃, respectively. Interestingly, the BiOIO₃ nanosheet also has good photocatalytic degradation performance for phenolic compounds; in particular, the degradation rate of BPA can reach 96.5% after 16 min, mainly due to hydroxylation reaction.

Bi3.64Mo0.36O6.55 nanoparticles anchored in BiOI: A p-n heterojunction photocatalyst to enhance water purification

Selective constructing of heterojunctions enables directional electron-hole migration and favorable charge separation. In this study, a novel p-n junction Bi_3.64Mo_0.36O_6.55 (BMO) nanoparticles anchored in BiOI construct by hydrothermal and subsequent in-situ synthesis. The construction of tight heterojunctions that enhance the characteristic absorption of visible light by Bi_3.64Mo_0.36O_6.55/BiOI (BIMO) and expose more reactive sites can be used to facilitate the rapid degradation of antibiotics (Tetracycline, TC), endocrine disruptors (Bisphenol A, BPA) and dyes in water. In addition, the BIMO catalyst maintained the rapid degradation rate of TC despite the interference of inorganic anions and aqueous substrates. The charge transfer pathways and radical species between the heterojunction components were investigated. In addition, the intermediates and toxicological analysis showed that TC was further mineralized and the small molecule products were generated significantly less toxic and less contaminated. In conclusion, this study synthesized photocatalysts based on p-n heterojunctions, which have potential applications for the degradation of TC.

A Z-scheme CdS/Ag3PO4 catalyst: Characterization, experimental design and mechanism consideration for methylene blue

Due to the explosive use of Azo dyes in various industries such as textiles, discharging these industrial effluents into the environment critically polluted water supplies. Accordingly, constructing/developing novel binary catalysts to diminish the pollution extent of such effluents before discharging into environment is an excellent issue in environmental chemistry. Here, a binary CdS/ Ag₃PO₄ was constructed, and its boosted photocatalytic activity was proven against methylene blue (MB), as a model dye pollutant. The Wurtzite CdS and Ag₃PO₄ cubic crystal nanoparticles were synthesized and coupled mechanically. The binary sample's lowest photoluminescence (PL) results confirm a higher e/h separation. DRS results confirmed a decreased energy gap for the coupled system. The semiconductors' VB and CV potentials were calculated and used for constructing of Z-scheme mechanism. The photocatalytic activity was followed via an experimental design approach. The model F-value of 89.75 > F_0.05,14,13 = 2.42 and LOF F-value of 6.57 < F_{0.05,10, 3} = 8.79 reveal that the model well processed data. The optimal run conditions were CMB: 5 ppm, Catalyst dose: 1 g/L, pH: 3.25, and irradiation time: 139 min, at which 85% of MB molecules were degraded. Based on the trend of ascorbic acid > isopropanol > formic acid ≈ nitrate obtained for the scavengers' importance in decreasing the photocatalyst activity, superoxide radicals had the highest effect in MB degradation and then ^•OH. The results showed the direct Z-scheme has the main effect on MB degradation by the binary sample.

Novel La3+/Sm3+ co-doped Bi5O7I with efficient visible-light photocatalytic activity for advanced treatment of wastewater: Internal mechanism, TC degradation pathway, and toxicity analysis

Controlling semiconductor photocatalysts by doping rare-earth ions is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic performance. Simple solvothermal and calcination methods were used to prepare La³⁺ and Sm³⁺ modified Bi₅O₇I nanomaterials. Some characterizations such as XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, etc. were carried out to explore its structural composition and photoelectrochemical properties. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by simulating the degradation of TC and RhB under visible-light irradiation. The degradation results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency of 4S4L-Bi₅O₇I was the best among the samples with the 100% degradation rate of TC (Tetracycline hydrochloride) and 93% of RhB (Rhodamine B). The capture experiment and ESR test proved that the active substances that play a role in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants were ·O₂^-, ¹O₂ and h⁺, and on this basis, the possible degradation mechanism was proposed. The final results showed that La/Sm co-doping expanded the light absorption range of Bi₅O₇I and improved the charge separation efficiency and the specific surface area. Besides, the surface defects were formed on the surface of Bi₅O₇I due to ion-doping, which could catch e^- to promote the separation and transfer of carriers and improve the photocatalytic activity. LC-MS was used to analyze the possible degradation pathways of TC. And the toxicity of TC was also analyzed via T.E.S.T and Toxtree. The results showed comprehensive toxicity of TC was decreased by 4S4L-Bi₅O₇I so that the overall water pollution was reduced. This work can provide a reference for the subsequent development of bismuth-based photocatalysts.

Carbon Quantum Dots Accelerating Surface Charge Transfer of 3D PbBiO2I Microspheres with Enhanced Broad Spectrum Photocatalytic Activity-Development and Mechanism Insight

The development of a highly efficient, visible-light responsive catalyst for environment purification has been a long-standing exploit, with obstacles to overcome, including inefficient capture of near-infrared photons, undesirable recombination of photo-generated carriers, and insufficient accessible reaction sites. Hence, novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified PbBiO₂I photocatalyst were synthesized for the first time through an in-situ ionic liquid-induced method. The bridging function of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([Bmim]I) guarantees the even dispersion of CQDs around PbBiO₂I surface, for synchronically overcoming the above drawbacks and markedly promoting the degradation efficiency of organic contaminants: (i) CQDs decoration harness solar photons in the near-infrared region; (ii) particular delocalized conjugated construction of CQDs strength via the utilization of photo-induced carriers; (iii) π-π interactions increase the contact between catalyst and organic molecules. Benefiting from these distinguished features, the optimized CQDs/PbBiO₂I nanocomposite displays significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance towards the elimination of rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin under visible/near-infrared light irradiation. The spin-trapping ESR analysis demonstrates that CQDs modification can boost the concentration of reactive oxygen species (O₂^•-). Combined with radicals trapping tests, valence-band spectra, and Mott-Schottky results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed. This work establishes a significant milestone in constructing CQDs-modified, bismuth-based catalysts for solar energy conversion applications.

Construction of BiOCl/Ti-MOFs type-II heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic performance for multiple antibiotics removal

The increased threats to environmental and human health caused by the widespread use of antibiotics have increased the need for efficient technologies for removing antibiotic remnants from wastewater after production. Photocatalysis, which is non-toxic, highly efficient, and low energy consumption, has played a vital role in wastewater treatment among the aforementioned technologies. Therefore, a MIL-125(Ti)/BiOCl type-II heterojunction photocatalyst was fabricated using solvothermal method. Investigations remarkably revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst for multiple antibiotics degradation (tetracycline and ofloxacin) was attributed to the construction of a heterojunction, which inhibits carrier recombination and enhances visible-light absorption. Furthermore, the radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance determined superoxide radicals and holes to be the main species in the photocatalytic process. Finally, we presented a potential photocatalytic mechanism that could account for the observations. Overall, this study offered guidelines for developing more photocatalysts with visible-light responses and removing multiple antibiotics from water more efficiently.

The Ultrahigh Adsorption Capacity and Excellent Photocatalytic Degradation Activity of Mesoporous CuO with Novel Architecture

In this paper, mesoporous CuO with a novel architecture was synthesized through a conventional hydrothermal approach followed by a facile sintering procedure. HR-TEM analysis found that mesoporous CuO with an interconnected pore structure has exposed high-energy crystal planes of (002) and (200). Theoretical calculations indicated that the high-energy crystal planes have superior adsorption capacity for H⁺ ions, which is critical for the excellent adsorption and remarkable photocatalytic activity of the anionic dye. The adsorption capacity of CuO to methyl orange (MO) at 0.4 g/L was approximately 30% under adsorption equilibrium conditions. We propose a state-changing mechanism to analyze the synergy and mutual restraint relation among the catalyst CuO, H⁺ ions, dye and H₂O₂. According to this mechanism, the degradation rate of MO can be elevated 3.5 times only by regulating the MO ratio in three states.

Antiviral drugs against influenza: Treatment methods, environmental risk assessment and analytical determination

Over the past few years, antiviral drugs against influenza are considered emerging contaminants since they cause environmental toxicity even at low concentrations. They have been found in environmental matrices all around the world, showing that conventional treatment methods fail to remove them from water and wastewater. In addition, the metabolites and transformation products of these drugs can be more persistent than original in the environment. Several techniques to degrade/remove antiviral drugs against influenza have been investigated to prevent this contamination. In this study, the characteristics of antiviral drugs against influenza, their measurement by analytical methods, and their removal in both water and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were presented. Different treatment methods, such as traditional procedures (biological processes, filtration, coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), adsorption and combined methods, were assessed. Ecotoxicological effects of both the antiviral drug and its metabolites as well as the transformation products formed as a result of treatment were evaluated. In addition, future perspectives for improving the removal of antiviral drugs against influenza, their metabolites and transformation products were further discussed. The research indicated that the main tested techniques in this study were ozonation, photolysis and photocatalysis. Combined methods, particularly those that use renewable energy and waste materials, appear to be the optimum approach for the treatment of effluents containing antiviral drugs against influenza. In light of high concentrations or probable antiviral resistance, this comprehensive assessment suggests that antiviral drug monitoring is required, and some of those substances may cause toxicological effects.

Synthesis of adjustable {312}/{004} facet heterojunction MWCNTs/Bi5O7I photocatalyst for ofloxacin degradation: Novel insights into the charge carriers transport

Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with high electrical conductivity are commonly accounted as the ideal additives to enhance the charge surface migration efficiency in photocatalysis. Theoretically, the MWCNTs-modified binary photocatalysts have potential for the change of nanocrystal structure. Herein, we reports an adjustable {312}/{004}facet heterojunction MWCNTs/Bi₅O₇I nanocomposite. Interestingly, the synergistic effect of {312}/{004}facet heterojunction and MWCNTs can effectively accelerate the spatial charge carriers transport. A novel {312}/{004}facet "S-scheme" pathway was proven to be the dominated pathway for the enhancement of spatial charge carriers. As a result, the MWCNTs-{312}/{004}Bi₅O₇I composites exhibited superior photocatalytic oxidation efficiency for a representative antibiotics ofloxacin photodegradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and LC-MS/MS analysis confirmed that the possible dealkylation and oxidation pathways could be found in OFL degradation. This work provides novel insights for the relationship between charge carrier transport and facet structure-property.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride over Au-doped BiOBr nanosheets under visible light irradiation

Bismuth(III) oxybromide (BiOBr) is a typical photocatalyst with a unique layered structure. However, the response of BiOBr to visible light is not strong enough for practical application. Moreover, the charge separation efficiency of BiOBr still needs to be improved. In this study, series of Au-doped BiOBr photocatalysts was prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Au0.3-BiOBr nanosheets exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance. The charge separation efficiency of Au0.3-BiOBr nanosheets was enhanced by 18.5 times compared with that of BiOBr. The intrinsic photocatalytic activity of Au0.3-BiOBr nanosheets in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride was approximately twice higher than that of BiOBr under visible light irradiation. In addition, three pathways were identified for the photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of tetracycline hydrochloride, which involve four reactions: hydroxylation, demethylation, ring opening and mineralization. Accordingly, this study proposes a feasible and effective Au-doped BiOBr photocatalyst, and describes a promising strategy for the design and synthesis of high-performance photocatalysts.

Bismuth Oxyhalide-Based Materials (BiOX: X = Cl, Br, I) and Their Application in Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants in Water: A Review

An important target of photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) technology is the development of semiconductor-based photoelectrodes capable of absorbing solar energy (visible light) and promoting oxidation and reduction reactions. Bismuth oxyhalide-based materials BiOX (X = Cl, Br, and I) meet these requirements. Their crystalline structure, optical and electronic properties, and photocatalytic activity under visible light mean that these materials can be coupled to other semiconductors to develop novel heterostructures for photoelectrochemical degradation systems. This review provides a general overview of controlled BiOX powder synthesis methods, and discusses the optical and structural features of BiOX-based materials, focusing on heterojunction photoanodes. In addition, it summarizes the most recent applications in this field, particularly photoelectrochemical performance, experimental conditions and degradation efficiencies reported for some organic pollutants (e.g., pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, phenolic derivatives, etc.). Finally, as this review seeks to serve as a guide for the characteristics and various properties of these interesting semiconductors, it discusses future PEC-related challenges to explore.

Efficient charge separation and improved photocatalytic activity in Type-II & Type-III heterojunction based multiple interfaces in BiOCl0.5Br0.5-Q: DFT and Experimental Insight

The nanostructured, inner-coupled Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX_0.5X'_0.5; X, X' = Cl, Br, I; X≠X') heterostructures were prepared using Quercetin (Q) as a sensitizer. The present study revealed the tuning of the band properties of as-prepared catalysts. The catalysts were characterized using various characterization techniques for evaluating the superior photocatalytic efficiency and a better understanding of elemental interactions at interfaces formed in the heterojunction. The material (BiOCl_0.5Br_0.5-Q) reflected higher degradation of MO (about 99.85%) and BPA (98.34%) under visible light irradiation than BiOCl_0.5I_0.5-Q and BiOBr_0.5I_0.5-Q. A total of 90.45 percent of total organic carbon in BPA was removed after visible light irradiation on BiOCl_0.5Br_0.5-Q. The many-fold increase in activity is attributed to the formation of multiple interfaces between halides, conjugated π-electrons and multiple -OH groups of quercetin (Q). The boost in degradation efficiency can be attributed to the higher surface area, 2-D nanostructure, inhibited electron-hole recombination, and appropriate band-gap of the heterostructure. Photo-response of BiOCl_0.5Br_0.5-Q is higher compared to BiOCl_0.5I_0.5-Q and BiOBr_0.5I_0.5-Q, indicating better light absorption properties and charge separation efficiency in BiOCl_0.5Br_0.5-Q due to band edge position. First-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) based calculations have also provided an insightful understanding of the interface formation, physical mechanism, and superior photocatalytic performance of BiOCl_0.5Br_0.5-Q heterostructure over other samples.

Effective Breaking of the Fluorocarbon Chain by the Interface Bi2O2X···PFOA Complex Strategy via Coordinated Se on Construction of the Internal Photogenerated Carrier Pathway

The destruction of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from outside was inhibited by the "barrel spiral" barrier, but the construction of the photocatalyst-PFOA complex provided a direct attack on photogenerated reactive species (RSs). Here, we investigated the bridging ability of bismuth oxychalcogenide (Bi₂O₂X) for constructing an effective photocarrier pathway to PFOA. The experimental results and DFT calculations showed that a more intense internal access of Bi₂O₂Se was built via the terminal carboxylate tail, and the weaker electrostatic interaction of Bi-Se bonds helped realize the smaller band gap and slower recombination of photocarriers, thereby inhibiting the invalid annihilation of holes with H₂O and facilitating the transformation of electrons to O₂^-•. The pseudo-first-order rate coefficient (k_obs) was 2 and 4 times higher than Bi₂O₂S and TiO₂, respectively, showing the outstanding photocatalytic activity of Bi₂O₂Se. A broad pH (4-8) adaptability of Bi₂O₂Se was observed for defluorination, especially in alkali condition. This new understanding may inspire the development of Se-coordinated catalysts.

Construction and application of BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi2S3 composites for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin

In this work, a novel BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi₂S₃ photocatalyst was designed to efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) with high photocatalytical activity and good stability over a wide pH range. Compared with Cu-doped Bi₂S₃, Bi₂S₃, BiOCl, BiOCl/Bi₂S₃, and Cu-doped BiOCl, the photocatalytical degradation rate of CIP (97.1% at 20 mg/L) over BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi₂S₃ was enhanced by about 84.77, 44.23, 2.95, 2.27, and 1.96 times within 20 min, respectively. Notably, the BiOCl/Cu-doped Bi₂S₃ photocatalyst also displayed high photocatalytical performance in the degradation of other antibiotics including norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and tetracycline (40 mL, 20 mg/L; 88.3%, 100%, and 95.2% of degradation rate within 30 min, respectively) under visible light irradiation. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance technique indicated that superoxide radicals (•O₂^-) and photogenerated holes (h⁺) played crucial roles in the photocatalytic degradation of CIP. Finally, the possible CIP degradation pathways was proposed by detecting the CIP intermediates in photocatalytical reaction process.

A readily synthesized bismuth oxyiodide/attapulgite for the photodegradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Bismuth oxyiodide and attapulgite have proven to be potential materials for the removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater.

Synthesis of a Novel 1D/2D Bi2O2CO3–BiOI Heterostructure and Its Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

A novel 1D/2D Bi2O2CO3–BiOI heterojunction photocatalyst with high-quality interfaces was synthesized through a hydrothermal method by using Bi2O2CO3 nanorods and KI as raw materials. Two-dimensional (2D) BiOI nanosheets uniformly and vertically grow on the 1D porous Bi2O2CO3 rods. Bi2O2CO3–BiOI heterojunctions exhibit better photocatalytic activity than pure Bi2O2CO3 nanorods and BiOI nanosheets. Cr(VI) (30 mg/L), MO (20 mg/L) and BPA (20 mg/L) can be completely degraded in 8–15 min. The superior photocatalytic performance of 1D/2D Bi2O2CO3–BiOI heterojunction is ascribed to the synergistic effects: (a) vertical 2D on 1D multidimensional structure; (b) the formation of the Bi2O2CO3–BiOI p–n heterojunction; (c) high-quality interfaces between Bi2O2CO3 and BiOI.

Layered Perovskite Oxyiodide with Narrow Band Gap and Long Lifetime Carriers for Water Splitting Photocatalysis

The development of semiconductors with narrow band gap and high stability is crucial for achieving solar to chemical energy conversion. Compounds with iodine, which has a high polarizability, have attracted attention because of their narrow band gap and long carrier lifetime, as typified by halide perovskite solar cells; however, they have been regarded as unsuitable for harsh photocatalytic water splitting because iodine is prone to self-oxidation. Here, we demonstrate that Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I, a layered Sillén-Aurivillius oxyiodide, not only has access to a wider range of visible light than its chloride and bromide counterparts, but also functions as a stable photocatalyst, efficiently oxidizing water. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the oxygen 2p orbitals in the perovskite block, rather than the fluorite Bi₂O₂ block as previously pointed out, anomalously push up the valence band maximum, which can be explained by a modified Madelung potential analysis that takes into account the high polarizability of iodine. In addition, the highly polarizable iodide contributes to longer carrier lifetime of Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I, allowing for a significantly higher quantum efficiency than its chloride and bromide counterparts. Visible-light-driven Z-scheme water splitting was achieved for the first time in an iodine-based system using Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I as an oxygen-evolution photocatalyst. The present study provides a novel approach for incorporating polarizable "soft" anions into building blocks of layered materials to manipulate the band structure and improve the carrier dynamics for visible-light responsive functions.
