Novel pathway of acephate degradation by the microbial consortium ZQ01 and its potential for environmental bioremediation

Interface Visualization of Bio-material Interaction Via Cryo-AEM Using the Biosynthesis of Iron-Based Nanoparticles as a Model

Although interaction between organisms and nonorganisms is vital in environmental processes, it is difficult to characterize at nanoscale resolution. Biosynthesis incorporates intracellular and extracellular processes involving crucial interfacial functions and electron and substance transfer processes, especially on the inorganic-organic interface. This work chooses the biosynthesis of iron-based nanoparticles (nFe) as a model for biomaterial interaction and employs Cryo-AEM (i.e., S/TEM, EELS, and EDS analysis based on sample preparation with cryo-transfer holder system), combined with CV, Raman, XPS, and FTIR to reveal the inorganic-organic interface process. The inorganic-organic interactions in the biosynthesis of iron-based nanoparticles by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (M-nFe) were characterized by changes in electron cloud density, and the corresponding chemical shifts of Fe and C EELS edges confirm that M-nFe acquires electrons from MR-1 on the interface. Capturing intact filamentous-like, slightly curved, and bundled structure provides solid evidence of a "circuit channel" for electron transfer between organic and inorganic interface. CV results also confirm that adding M-nFe can enhance electron transfer from MR-1 to ferric ions. A mechanism for the synthesis of M-nFe with MR-1 based on intracellular and extracellular conditions under facultative anaerobic was visualized, providing a protocol for investigating the organic-inorganic interface.

Efficacy of novel bacterial consortia in degrading fipronil and thiobencarb in paddy soil: a survey for community structure and metabolic pathways

Introduction

Fipronil (FIP) and thiobencarb (THIO) represent widely utilized pesticides in paddy fields, presenting environmental challenges that necessitate effective remediation approaches. Despite the recognized need, exploring bacterial consortia efficiently degrading FIP and THIO remains limited.

Methods

This study isolated three unique bacterial consortia-FD, TD, and MD-demonstrating the capability to degrade FIP, THIO, and an FIP + THIO mixture within a 10-day timeframe. Furthermore, the bioaugmentation abilities of the selected consortia were evaluated in paddy soils under various conditions.

Results

Sequencing results shed light on the consortia's composition, revealing a diverse bacterial population prominently featuring Azospirillum, Ochrobactrum, Sphingobium, and Sphingomonas genera. All consortia efficiently degraded pesticides at 800 µg/mL concentrations, primarily through oxidative and hydrolytic processes. This metabolic activity yields more hydrophilic metabolites, including 4-(Trifluoromethyl)-phenol and 1,4-Benzenediol, 2-methyl-, for FIP, and carbamothioic acid, diethyl-, S-ethyl ester, and Benzenecarbothioic acid, S-methyl ester for THIO. Soil bioaugmentation tests highlight the consortia's effectiveness, showcasing accelerated degradation of FIP and THIO-individually or in a mixture-by 1.3 to 13-fold. These assessments encompass diverse soil moisture levels (20 and 100% v/v), pesticide concentrations (15 and 150 µg/g), and sterile conditions (sterile and non-sterile soils).

Discussion

This study offers an understanding of bacterial communities adept at degrading FIP and THIO, introducing FD, TD, and MD consortia as promising contenders for bioremediation endeavors.

Analysis and Functional Prediction of Core Bacteria in the Arabidopsis Rhizosphere Microbiome under Drought Stress

The effects of global warming, population growth, and economic development are increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as drought. Among abiotic stresses, drought has the greatest impact on soil biological activity and crop yields. The rhizosphere microbiota, which represents a second gene pool for plants, may help alleviate the effects of drought on crops. In order to investigate the structure and diversity of the bacterial communities on drought stress, this study analyzed the differences in the bacterial communities by high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatical analyses in the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis thaliana under normal and drought conditions. Based on analysis of α and β diversity, the results showed that drought stress had no significant effect on species diversity between groups, but affected species composition. Difference analysis of the treatments showed that the bacteria with positive responses to drought stress were Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia (BCP) and Streptomyces. Drought stress reduced the complexity of the rhizosphere bacterial co-occurrence network. Streptomyces was at the core of the network in both the control and drought treatments, whereas the enrichment of BCP under drought conditions was likely due to a decrease in competitors. Functional prediction showed that the core bacteria metabolized a wide range of carbohydrates, such as pentose, glycans, and aromatic compounds. Our results provide a scientific and theoretical basis for the use of rhizosphere microbial communities to alleviate plant drought stress and the further exploration of rhizosphere microbial interactions under drought stress.

Application of biochar on soil bioelectrochemical remediation: behind roles, progress, and potential

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that combine electrochemistry with biological methods have gained attention in the remediation of polluted environments, including wastewater, sludge, sediments, and soils. The most attractive advantage of BESs is that the solid electrode is used as an inexhaustible electron acceptor or donor, and biocurrent directly converted from organics can afford the reaction energy of contaminant breakdown, crossing the internal energy barrier of endothermic degradation, which achieves a continuous biodegradation process without the simultaneous use of exogenetic chemicals and bioelectricity recovery. However, soil BESs are hindered by expensive electrode materials, difficult pollutant and electron transfer, low microbial competitive activity, and biocompatibility in contamination remediation. Fortunately, introducing biochar into soil BESs could reveal a high potential in addressing these BES inadequacies. The characteristics of biochar, e.g., conductivity, transferability, high specific surface area, high porosity, large functional groups, and biocompatibility, can improve the performance of soil BESs. In fact, biochar not only carries electrons but also transfers nutrients, pollutants, and even bacteria by facilitating transmission in the bioelectric field of BESs. Consequently, the abilities of biochar make for better functionality of BESs. This review collates information on the roles, application, and progress of biochar in soil BESs, and future prospects are given. It is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers to extend BES application in environmental remediation and to assist the progress of carbon sequestration and emission reduction based on the inertia of biochar and the blocking of electron flow to form methane.

Uptake mechanism, translocation, and transformation of organophosphate esters in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes): A hydroponic study

Owing to their dominant wastewater origin, bioavailability, and toxicity, the occurrence and behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in aquatic systems have attracted considerable attention over the past two decades. Aquatic plants can accumulate and metabolize OPEs in water, thereby playing an important role in their behavior and fate in waterbodies. However, their uptake, translocation and transformation mechanisms in plants remain incompletely characterized. We investigated the accumulation and transformation of OPEs in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) through a series of hydroponic experiments using three representative OPEs, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), and triphenyl phosphate (TPP). These OPEs can not only be adsorbed onto and enter plant roots via passive diffusion pathways, which are facilitated by anion channels and/or aquaporins, but also can return to the solution when concentration gradients exist. After entry, hydrophilic TCEP showed a dominant distribution in the cell sap, strong acropetal transportability, and rapid translocation rate, whereas hydrophobic TPP was mostly retained in the root cell wall and therefore demonstrated weak acropetal transportability; TBEP with moderate hydrophilicity remained in the middle. All these OPEs can be transformed into diesters, which presented higher proportions in the cell sap and therefore have stronger acropetal transferability than their parent OPEs. TCEP exhibits the lowest biodegradability, followed by TPP and TBEP. These OPEs exerted apparent effects on plant growth, photosynthesis, and the diversity and composition of the rhizosphere microbial community.

Environmental carrying capacity and ecological risk assessment of pesticides under different soil use types in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA), China

Soil environmental safety has received much attention during the past few decades due to its significance in agricultural production and human health. Special attention is required for soil pesticide residues and ecological risks. This study examined 197 soil samples from industrial, residential and agricultural areas for the presence of 12 organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and 8 synthetic pyrethroids (SYPs) in the 16 cities in Henan Province, and the center of CPUA, based on the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) concept proposed by China. The total average concentrations of ∑12OPPs in industrial, residential and agricultural soils were 194, 217, 267 ng/g dry weight, and those of ∑8SYPs were 26.8, 35.7, 25.5 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The two pollutants with the greatest concentrations in the soils were malathion and fenpropathrin, respectively, the dominant components of OPPs and SYPs. The soil environmental carrying capacity (SECC) analysis, representing the maximum residual load that can be supported, shows that acephate and cyhalothrin were overloaded, with a predicted period of over 500 years. Among the 16 cities of CPUA, a higher frequency of high ecological risk could be observed only in Shangqiu. The OPPs in children had total non-carcinogenic risk values of more than 1.0. Similarly, the non-carcinogenic risks of SYPs in adults and children in the residential areas were more than 1.0. The study provides knowledge on how to effectively manage soil safety in Henan Province, which is the center of the CPUA, with a large population and grain province to protect ecosystems and reduce the risks of soil pesticide residues in humans.

Biofilm formation in xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms

The increased presence of xenobiotics affects living organisms and the environment at large on a global scale. Microbial degradation is effective for the removal of xenobiotics from the ecosystem. In natural habitats, biofilms are formed by single or multiple populations attached to biotic/abiotic surfaces and interfaces. The attachment of microbial cells to these surfaces is possible via the matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). However, the molecular machinery underlying the development of biofilms differs depending on the microbial species. Biofilms act as biocatalysts and degrade xenobiotic compounds, thereby removing them from the environment. Quorum sensing (QS) helps with biofilm formation and is linked to the development of biofilms in natural contaminated sites. To date, scant information is available about the biofilm-mediated degradation of toxic chemicals from the environment. Therefore, we review novel insights into the impact of microbial biofilms in xenobiotic contamination remediation, the regulation of biofilms in contaminated sites, and the implications for large-scale xenobiotic compound treatment.

Unraveling the complexities of Cd-aniline composite pollution: Insights from standalone and joint toxicity assessments in a bacterial community

Cadmium (Cd) and aniline frequently co-occur in industrial settings but have rarely been addressed as composite toxicants in terms of the overall toxicity despite extensive knowledge of the environmental impact of each individual pollutant. In this study, we attempt to assess the relation of individual and combined toxic effects of Cd and aniline using a bacterial consortium cultured from soils as a model system. Results showed that the consortial bacteria exhibited drastically stronger tolerance to stand-alone Cd and aniline in comparison to literature data acquired from single species studies. When occurring simultaneously, the joint toxicity displayed a concentration-dependent behavior that wasn't anticipated based on individual chemical tests. Specifically, additive effects manifested with Cd and aniline at their IC10s, but changed to synergistic when the concentrations increased to IC20, and finally transitioned into antagonistic at IC30s and beyond. In addition, co-occurring aniline appeared to have retarded the cellular accumulation of Cd while increasing the enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase relative to that in Cd-alone treatments. Finally, the bacterial community experienced distinct compositional changes under solo and combined toxicities with several genera exhibiting inconsistent behavior between treatments of single and composite toxicants. Findings from this study highlight the complexity of bacterial response to composite pollutions and point to the need for more comprehensive references in risk and toxicology assessment at multi-chemical contamination sites.

Wheat straw pyrochar more efficiently decreased enantioselective uptake of dinotefuran by lettuce and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes than hydrochar in an agricultural soil

Remediation of soils pollution caused by dinotefuran, a chiral pesticide, is indispensable for ensuring human food security. In comparison with pyrochar, the effect of hydrochar on enantioselective fate of dinotefuran, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) profiles in the contaminated soils remain poorly understood. Therefore, wheat straw hydrochar (SHC) and pyrochar (SPC) were prepared at 220 and 500 °C, respectively, to investigate their effects and underlying mechanisms on enantioselective fate of dinotefuran enantiomers and metabolites, and soil ARG abundance in soil-plant ecosystems using a 30-day pot experiment planted with lettuce. SPC showed a greater reduction effect on the accumulation of R- and S-dinotefuran and metabolites in lettuce shoots than SHC. This was mainly resulted from the lowered soil bioavailability of R- and S-dinotefuran due to adsorption/immobilization by chars, together with the char-enhanced pesticide-degrading bacteria resulted from increased soil pH and organic matter content. Both SPC and SHC efficiently reduced ARG levels in soils, owing to lowered abundance of ARG-carrying bacteria and declined horizontal gene transfer induced by decreased dinotefuran bioavailability. The above results provide new insights for optimizing char-based sustainable technologies to mitigate pollution of dinotefuran and spread of ARGs in agroecosystems.

High-efficiency degradation of methomyl by the novel bacterial consortium MF0904: Performance, structural analysis, metabolic pathways, and environmental bioremediation

Methomyl is a widely used carbamate pesticide, which has adverse biological effects and poses a serious threat to ecological environments and human health. Several bacterial isolates have been investigated for removing methomyl from environment. However, low degradation efficiency and poor environmental adaptability of pure cultures severely limits their potential for bioremediation of methomyl-contaminated environment. Here, a novel microbial consortium, MF0904, can degrade 100% of 25 mg/L methomyl within 96 h, an efficiency higher than that of any other consortia or pure microbes reported so far. The sequencing analysis revealed that Pandoraea, Stenotrophomonas and Paracoccus were the predominant members of MF0904 in the degradation process, suggesting that these genera might play pivotal roles in methomyl biodegradation. Moreover, five new metabolites including ethanamine, 1,2-dimethyldisulfane, 2-hydroxyacetonitrile, N-hydroxyacetamide, and acetaldehyde were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, indicating that methomyl could be degraded firstly by hydrolysis of its ester bond, followed by cleavage of the C-S ring and subsequent metabolism. Furthermore, MF0904 can successfully colonize and substantially enhance methomyl degradation in different soils, with complete degradation of 25 mg/L methomyl within 96 and 72 h in sterile and nonsterile soil, respectively. Together, the discovery of microbial consortium MF0904 fills a gap in the synergistic metabolism of methomyl at the community level and provides a potential candidate for bioremediation applications.

Hormesis effects in tomato plant growth and photosynthesis due to acephate exposure based on physiology and transcriptomic analysis

BACKGROUND

Hormesis is a common phenomenon in toxicology described as low-dose stimulation due to a toxin which causes inhibition at a high dose. Pesticide hormesis in plants has attracted considerable research interest in recent years; however, the specific mechanism has not yet been clarified. Acephate is an organophosphorus insecticide that is used worldwide. Here, hormesis in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plant growth and photosynthesis after acephate exposure is confirmed, as stimulation occurred at low stress levels, whereas inhibition occurred after exposure to high concentrations.

RESULTS

We found that low acephate concentration (5-fold lower than recommended application dosage) could enhance chlorophyll biosynthesis and stimulate photosynthesis effects, and thus improve S. lycopersicum growth. A high level of acephate (5-fold higher than recommended application dosage) stress inhibited chlorophyll accumulation, decreased photosystem II efficiency and blocked antioxidant reactions in leaves, increasing reactive oxygen species levels and damaging plant growth. Transcriptomic analysis and quantitative real-time PCR results revealed that the photosynthesis - antenna proteins pathway played a crucial role in the hormesis effect, and that LHCB7 as well as LHCP from the pathway were the most sensitive to acephate hormesis.

CONCLUSION

Our results showed that acephate could induce hormesis in tomato plant growth and photosynthesis, and that photosystem II and the photosynthesis - antenna proteins pathway played important roles in hormesis. These results provide novel insights into the scientific and safe application of chemical pesticides, and new guidance for investigation into utilizing pesticide hormesis in agriculture. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Current insights into the microbial degradation of nicosulfuron: Strains, metabolic pathways, and molecular mechanisms

Nicosulfuron is among the sulfonylurea herbicides that are widely used to control annual and perennial grass weeds in cornfields. However, nicosulfuron residues in the environment are likely to cause long-lasting harmful environmental and biological effects. Nicosulfuron degrades via photo-degradation, chemical hydrolysis, and microbial degradation. The latter is crucial for pesticide degradation and has become an essential strategy to remove nicosulfuron residues from the environment. Most previous studies have focused on the screening, degradation characteristics, and degradation pathways of biodegrader microorganisms. The isolated nicosulfuron-degrading strains include Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Alcaligenes, Rhodopseudomonas, Ochrobactrum, Micrococcus, Serratia, Penicillium, Aspergillus, among others, all of which have good degradation efficiency. Two main intermediates, 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine (ADMP) and 2-aminosulfonyl-N,N-dimethylnicotinamide (ASDM), are produced during microbial degradation and are derived from the C-N, C-S, and S-N bond breaks on the sulfonylurea bridge, covering almost every bacterial degradation pathway. In addition, enzymes related to the degradation of nicosulfuron have been identified successively, including the manganese ABC transporter (hydrolase), Flavin-containing monooxygenase (oxidase), and E3 (esterase). Further in-depth studies based on molecular biology and genetics are needed to elaborate on their role in the evolution of novel catabolic pathways and the microbial degradation of nicosulfuron. To date, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and degradation mechanisms of nicosulfuron. This review summarizes recent advances in nicosulfuron degradation and comprehensively discusses the potential of nicosulfuron-degrading microorganisms for bioremediating contaminated environments, providing a reference for further research development on nicosulfuron biodegradation in the future.

Chemodiversity of soil organic matters determines biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls by a graphene oxide-assisted bacterial agent

A promising strategy for degrading persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in soil is amendment with nanomaterial-assisted functional bacteria. However, the influence of soil organic matter chemodiversity on the performance of nanomaterial-assisted bacterial agents remains unclear. Herein, different types of soil (Mollisol soil, MS; Ultisol soil, US; and Inceptisol soil, IS) were inoculated with a graphene oxide (GO)-assisted bacterial agent (Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110, B. diazoefficiens USDA 110) to investigate the association between soil organic matter chemodiversity and stimulation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) degradation. Results indicated that the high-aromatic solid organic matter (SOM) inhibited PCB bioavailability, and lignin-dominant dissolved organic matter (DOM) with high biotransformation potential was a favored substrate for all PCB degraders, which led to no stimulation of PCB degradation in MS. Differently, high-aliphatic SOM in US and IS promoted PCB bioavailability. The high/low biotransformation potential of multiple DOM components (e.g., lignin, condensed hydrocarbon, unsaturated hydrocarbon, etc.) in US/IS further resulted to the enhanced PCB degradation by B. diazoefficiens USDA 110 (up to 30.34%) /all PCB degraders (up to 17.65%), respectively. Overall, the category and biotransformation potential of DOM components and the aromaticity of SOM collaboratively determine the stimulation of GO-assisted bacterial agent on PCB degradation.

Rapid Biodegradation of the Organophosphorus Insecticide Acephate by a Novel Strain Burkholderia sp. A11 and Its Impact on the Structure of the Indigenous Microbial Community

The acephate-degrading microbes that are currently available are not optimal. In this study, Burkholderia sp. A11, an efficient degrader of acephate, presented an acephate-removal efficiency of 83.36% within 56 h (100 mg·L^-1). The A11 strain has a broad substrate tolerance and presents a good removal effect in the concentration range 10-1600 mg·L^-1. Six metabolites from the degradation of acephate were identified, among which the main products were methamidophos, acetamide, acetic acid, methanethiol, and dimethyl disulfide. The main degradation pathways involved include amide bond breaking and phosphate bond hydrolysis. Moreover, strain A11 successfully colonized and substantially accelerated acephate degradation in different soils, degrading over 90% of acephate (50-200 mg·kg^-1) within 120 h. 16S rDNA sequencing results further confirmed that the strain A11 gradually occupied a dominant position in the soil microbial communities, causing slight changes in the diversity and composition of the indigenous soil microbial community structure.

Characterization and novel pathway of atrazine catabolism by Agrobacterium rhizogenes AT13 and its potential for environmental bioremediation

Agrobacterium rhizogenes AT13, a novel bacterial strain that was isolated from contaminated soil, could utilize atrazine as the sole nitrogen, thereby degrading it. Optimization of the degradation reaction using a Box-Behnken design resulted in 99.94% atrazine degradation at pH 8.57, with an inoculum size of 3.10 × 10⁹ CFU/mL and a concentration of 50 mg/L atrazine. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-HRMS), liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses identified and quantified six reported metabolites and a novel metabolite (2-hydroxypropazine) from atrazine degradation by AT13. On the basis of these metabolites, we propose an atrazine degradation pathway that includes dichlorination, hydroxylation, deamination, dealkylation and methylation reactions. The toxicity of the degradation products was evaluated by Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T). Bioaugmentation of atrazine-polluted soils/water with strain AT13 significantly improved the atrazine removal rate. Thus, AT13 has potential applications in bioremediation.

Biodegradation of emerging organic pollutant gemfibrozil: Mechanism, kinetics and pathway modelling

The increasing population has raised the demand for pharmaceutical and personal care products to maintain a good health. Gemfibrozil (GEM), is extensively used as a lipid regulator and is frequently detected in wastewater treatment systems and poses deleterious health and ecological effects. Hence, the current study employing Bacillus sp. N2 reports the degradation of gemfibrozil via co-metabolism in 15 days. The study reported 86 % degradation with GEM (20 mgL^-1) using sucrose (150 mgL^-1) as a co-substrate; as compared to 42 % without a co-substrate. Further, time-profiling studies of metabolites revealed significant demethylation and decarboxylation reactions during degradation that leads to formation of six (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6) metabolites as by-products. Based on the LC-MS analysis a potential degradation pathway for GEM by Bacillus sp. N2 was proposed. The degradation of GEM has not been reported so far and the study envisages eco-friendly approach to tackle pharmaceutical- active- compounds.

Modeling and optimization of chlorpyrifos and glyphosate biodegradation using RSM and ANN: Elucidating their degradation pathways by GC-MS based metabolomics

Ongoing and extensive use of pesticides negatively impact the environment and human health. Microbe-based remediation bears importance as it is an eco-friendly and cost-effective technique. The present study investigated chlorpyrifos (CHL) and glyphosate (GLY) degrading potential of Bacillus cereus AKAD 3-1, isolated from the soybean rhizosphere. Optimization and validation of different process variables were carried out by response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). Critical parameters which affect the degradation process are initial pesticide concentration, pH, and inoculum size. At optimum conditions, the bacterial strain demonstrated 94.52% and 83.58% removal of chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, respectively. Both Central-composite design (CCD-RSM) and ANN approaches proved to perform well in modeling and optimizing the growth conditions. The optimum ANN-GA model resulted in R² ≥ 0.99 for chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, while in the case of RSM, the obtained R² value was 0.96 and 0.95, respectively. Results indicated that the process variables significantly (p < 0.05) impact chlorpyrifos and glyphosate biodegradation. Moreover, the predicted RSM model had a "lack of fit p-value" of "0.8849" and "0.2502" for chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, respectively. GC-MS analysis revealed that the strain first converted chlorpyrifos into 3,5,6-trichloro pyridin-2-ol & O, O-diethyl O-hydrogen phosphorothiate. Later, these intermediate metabolites were broken and completely mineralized into non-toxic by-products. Similarly, glyphosate was first converted into 2-(methylamino) acetic acid and amino-oxyphosphonic acid, which were further mineralized without any toxic by-products. Taken together, the results of this study clarify the biodegradation pathways and highlights the promising potential of B. cereus AKAD 3-1 in the bioremediation of chlorpyrifos and glyphosate-polluted environments.

Biochar aerogel enhanced remediation performances for heavy oil-contaminated soil through biostimulation strategy

Petroleum leakages can seriously damage the soil environment and cause a persistent harm to human health, due to the release of heavy oil pollutants with a high viscosity and high molecular weight. In this paper, biochar aerogel materials were successfully prepared under 600, 700 and 800 ℃ (accordingly labeled as 600-aerogel, 700-aerogel and 800-aerogel) with green, sustainable and abundant sisal leaves as raw materials for the remediation of heavy oil-contaminated soil. The remediation performances of biochar aerogel supplement for heavy oil-contaminated soil were investigated, while microbial abundance and community structure were characterized. The degradation efficiency of 600-aerogel, 700-aerogel and 800-aerogel treatments was accordingly 80.69%, 86.04% and 86.62% after 60 days. Apart from adsorption behavior, biostimulation strengthened the degradation efficiency, according to findings from first-order degradation kinetics. Biochar aerogel supplement basically increased genera microbial abundance for Sinomonas, Streptomyces, Sphingomonas and Massilia with petroleum degradation abilities through microorganisms' biostimulation. Sinomonas as the dominant genus with the highest abundance probably contributed much higher capacities to heavy oil degradation. This study can provide an inspiring reference for the development of green carbon-based materials to be applied in heavy oil-contaminated soils through biostimulation mechanisms.

Biodegradation of Iprodione and Chlorpyrifos Using an Immobilized Bacterial Consortium in a Packed-Bed Bioreactor

This work provides the basis for implementing a continuous treatment system using a bacterial consortium for wastewater containing a pesticide mixture of iprodione (IPR) and chlorpyrifos (CHL). Two bacterial strains (Achromobacter spanius C1 and Pseudomonas rhodesiae C4) isolated from the biomixture of a biopurification system were able to efficiently remove pesticides IPR and CHL at different concentrations (10 to 100 mg L^-1) from the liquid medium as individual strains and free consortium. The half-life time (T_1/2) for IPR and CHL was determined for individual strains and a free bacterial consortium. However, when the free bacterial consortium was used, a lower T_1/2 was obtained, especially for CHL. Based on these results, an immobilized bacterial consortium was formulated with each bacterial strain encapsulated individually in alginate beads. Then, different inoculum concentrations (5, 10, and 15% w/v) of the immobilized consortium were evaluated in batch experiments for IPR and CHL removal. The inoculum concentration of 15% w/v demonstrated the highest pesticide removal. Using this inoculum concentration, the packed-bed bioreactor with an immobilized bacterial consortium was operated in continuous mode at different flow rates (30, 60, and 90 mL h^-1) at a pesticide concentration of 50 mg L^-1 each. The performance in the bioreactor demonstrated that it is possible to efficiently remove a pesticide mixture of IPR and CHL in a continuous system. The metabolites 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) were produced, and a slight accumulation of TCP was observed. The bioreactor was influenced by TCP accumulation but was able to recover performance quickly. Finally, after 60 days of operation, the removal efficiency was 96% for IPR and 82% for CHL. The findings of this study demonstrate that it is possible to remove IPR and CHL from pesticide-containing wastewater in a continuous system.

Co-inducible Catabolism of 2-Naphthol Initiated by Hydroxylase CehC1C2 in Rhizobium sp. X9 Removed Its Ecotoxicity

2-Naphthol, which originates from various industrial activities, is widely disseminated through the discharge of industrial wastewater and is, thus, harmful to the water ecosystem, agricultural production, and human health. In this study, the carbaryl degrading strain Rhizobium sp. X9 was proven to be able to degrade 2-naphthol and reduce its toxicity to rice (Oryza sativa) and Chlorella ellipsoidea. Two-component hydroxylase CehC1C2 is responsible for the initial step of degradation and generates 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene, which is further degraded by the ceh cluster. The transcription of gene cluster cehC1C2 could be induced when both 2-naphthol and glucose were added. A bioinformatic analysis revealed that two transcriptional regulators, the inhibitor CehR2 and the activator CehR3, could be involved in this process. Our study elucidated the molecular mechanism of microbial degradation of 2-naphthol and provided an effective strategy for the in situ remediation of 2-naphthol contamination in the environment.

N-acetylation of toxic aromatic amines by fungi: Strain screening, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity evaluation, and application in bioremediation of 3,4-dichloroaniline

Aromatic amines (AA) are one of the most commonly used classes of compounds in industry and the most common pollutants found in both soil and water. 3,4-Dichloaniline (3,4-DCA) is a persistent residue of the phenylurea herbicide in the environment. In this study, we used a colorimetric method as a new approach to screen 12 filamentous fungal strains of the genera Aspergillus, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, and Mucor to assess their capacity to perform AA N-acetylation since it is considered a potential tool in environmental bioremediation. Subsequently, the selected strains were biotransformed with different AA substrates to evaluate the product yield. The strains Aspergillus niveus 43, Aspergillus terreus 31, and Cladosporium cladosporioides showed higher efficiencies in the biotransformation of 3,4-DCA at 500 µM into its N-acetylated product. These fungal strains also showed great potential to reduce the phytotoxicity of 3,4-DCA in experiments using Lactuca sativa seeds. Furthermore, N-acetylation was shown to be effective in reducing the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of 3,4-DCA and other AA in the immortalized human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell line. The isolated products after biotransformation showed that fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Cladosporium appeared to have N-acetylation as the first and main AA detoxification mechanism. Finally, A. terreus 31 showed the highest 3,4-DCA bioremediation potential, and future research can be carried out on the application of this strain to form microbial consortia with great potential for the elimination of toxic AA from the environment.

Dietary Association with Midgut Microbiota Components of Eocanthecona furcellata (Wolff)

Eocanthecona furcellata is an important predatory stinkbug that attacks many lepidopteran pests. For mass-rearing, artificial diets are used to rear this predator in the laboratory; however, the fitness of the predators is reduced, and little is known about the cause. Since gut microbiota plays vital roles in the digestion and development of many hosts and can consequently affect host fitness, an understanding of the microbial community composition of E. furcellata may help to solve this unresolved problem. We compared the development and reproduction of E. furcellata reared on an artificial diet, and a natural (Spodoptera litura) or semi-natural (Tenebrio molitor) diet, and then the midgut microbiota were assessed using high-throughput 16S rRNA. The results of the high-throughput 16S rRNA show that the bacterial richness and diversity in the artificial diet gut samples increased considerably compared with the other samples. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in E. furcellata. At the genus level, Serratia (however, the relative abundance was lower in the artificial diet gut samples), Enterococcus, and an uncultured bacterium genus of family Enterobacteriaceae, were dominant. The midgut microbiota components significantly differed among the diets, indicating that the gut bacteria had a dietary association with E. furcellata. This study provides a better understanding of midgut microbiota and the artificial diets that might affect them in E. furcellata.

Aaqueous exposure to silver nanoparticles synthesized by abalone viscera hydrolysates promotes the growth, immunity and gut health of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have the potential to be used in aquaculture, but their influence on the growth and health of aquatic organisms has not been extensively investigated. In this study, the abalone viscera hydrolysates decorated AgNPs (AVH-AgNPs) were dispersed into aquaculture water at different concentrations (0, 6, 9, and 18 μg/l) to evaluate the biological effects on zebrafish (Danio rerio). The results showed that the AVH-AgNPs treatments of 6 and 9 μg/l promoted the growth and did not cause obvious damage to the gills, intestines, and livers of zebrafish. All the treatments induced catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and increased glutathione (GSH) content in the livers and upregulated the expression of immune related genes. The effects of 9 and 18 μg/l AVH-AgNPs treatments were more obvious. After AVH-AgNPs treatment, the abundances of some potential pathogens, such as species Plesimonas shigelloides and Pseudomonas alcaligenes and genus Flavobacterium decreased significantly. In contrast, the abundance of some beneficial bacteria that can degrade pollutants and toxins (e.g., Rhodococcus erythropolis) increased significantly. Thus, the application of low concentrations (6 ~ 18 μg/l) of AVH-AgNPs in aquaculture water is relatively safe and has a positive effect on zebrafish farming.

Kinetics investigation of phenolic pollutant degradation via Serratia marcescens ABHI 001 and its application in wastewater treatment

In the present work, kinetic study has been conducted in order to effectively eliminate the p-cresol from wastewater employing isolated bacterial strain Serratia marcescens ABHI001 under batch shake flasks in the concentration varying from 50 to 500 mg/L. Further, effects of various parameters including p-cresol concentration, inoculum dosage, temperature, pH and agitation have been investigated. It was found that 10% v/v inoculum of 24 h age, was effective in degrading p-cresol. Beside this, it was noticed that the concentration of P-cresol above 100 mg/L exhibited an inhibitory effect. The maximum specific growth rate (μmax) was obtained to be 0.360 h-1 for 100 mgL-1 concentration. Further, the experimental results were well fitted with Halden's and Andrew's models and kinetic parameters μmax, KS and Ki in case of Haldane model were calculated to be 0.9697 h-1, 88.07 mgL-1 and 219.9 mgL-1, respectively whereas the corresponding values in case of Andrews's constants were 0.6917 h-1, 62.83 mgL-1 and 307.4 mgL-1, respectively. The yield coefficient for the growth on p-cresol was found to be 0.82.

Insights into the microbial degradation and resistance mechanisms of glyphosate

Glyphosate, as one of the broad-spectrum herbicides for controlling annual and perennial weeds, is widely distributed in various environments and seriously threatens the safety of human beings and ecology. Glyphosate is currently degraded by abiotic and biotic methods, such as adsorption, photolysis, ozone oxidation, and microbial degradation. Of these, microbial degradation has become the most promising method to treat glyphosate because of its high efficiency and environmental protection. Microorganisms are capable of using glyphosate as a phosphorus, nitrogen, or carbon source and subsequently degrade glyphosate into harmless products by cleaving C-N and C-P bonds, in which enzymes and functional genes related to glyphosate degradation play an indispensable role. There have been many studies on the abiotic and biotic treatment technologies, microbial degradation pathways and intermediate products of glyphosate, but the related enzymes and functional genes involved in the glyphosate degradation pathways have not been further discussed. There is little information on the resistance mechanisms of bacteria and fungi to glyphosate, and previous investigations of resistance mechanisms have mainly focused on how bacteria resist glyphosate damage. Therefore, this review explores the microorganisms, enzymes and functional genes related to the microbial degradation of glyphosate and discusses the pathways of microbial degradation and the resistance mechanisms of microorganisms to glyphosate. This review is expected to provide reference for the application and improvement of the microbial degradation of glyphosate in microbial remediation.

Effects of Free or Immobilized Bacterium Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila Y4B on Glyphosate Degradation Performance and Indigenous Microbial Community Structure

The overuse of glyphosate has resulted in serious environmental contamination. Thus, effective techniques to remove glyphosate from the environment are required. Herein, we isolated a novel strain Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila Y4B, which completely degraded glyphosate and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Y4B degraded glyphosate over a broad concentration range (50-800 mg L^-1), with a degradation efficiency of over 98% within 72 h (50 mg L^-1). Y4B degraded glyphosate via the AMPA pathway by cleaving the C-N bond, followed by degradation of AMPA and subsequent metabolism. Y4B demonstrated strong competitiveness and substantially accelerated the degradation of glyphosate in different soils, degrading 71.93 and 89.81% of glyphosate (400 mg kg^-1) within 5 days in sterile and nonsterile soils, respectively. The immobilized cells of Y4B were more efficient than their free cells and they displayed excellent biodegradation efficiency in a sediment-water system. Taken together, Y4B is an ideal degrader for the bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated sites.

Peroxidases-based enticing biotechnological platforms for biodegradation and biotransformation of emerging contaminants

Rampant industrial boom, urbanization, and exponential population growth resulted in widespread environmental pollution, with water being one of the leading affected resources. All kinds of pollutants, including phenols, industrial dyes, antibiotics, pharmaceutically active residues, and persistent/volatile organic compounds, have a paramount effect, either directly or indirectly, on human health and aquatic entities. Strategies for affordable and efficient decontamination of these emerging pollutants have become the prime focus of academic researchers, industry, and government to constitute a sustainable human society. Classical treatment techniques for environmental contaminants are associated with several limitations, such as inefficiency, complex pretreatments, overall high process cost, high sludge generation, and highly toxic side-products formation. Enzymatic remediation is considered a green and ecologically friendlier method that holds considerable potential to mitigate any kinds of contaminating agents. Exploiting the potential of various peroxidases for pollution abatement is an emerging research area and has considerable advantages, such as efficiency and ease of handling, over other methods. This work is designed to provide recent progress in deploying peroxidases as green and versatile biocatalytic tools for the degradation and transformation of a spectrum of potentially hazardous environmental pollutants to broaden their scope for biotechnological and environmental purposes. More studies are required to explicate the degradation mechanisms, assess the toxicology levels of bio-transformed metabolites, and standardize the treatment strategies for economic viability.

Novel mechanism and degradation kinetics of allethrin using Bacillus megaterium strain HLJ7 in contaminated soil/water environments

As a common pyrethroid insecticide, allethrin is widely used for various purposes in agriculture and home applications. At present, allethrin residues have been frequently detected worldwide, yet little is known about the kinetics and degradation mechanisms of this insecticide. In this study, a highly efficient allethrin-degrading bacterium, Bacillus megaterium strain HLJ7, was obtained through enrichment culture technology. Strain HLJ7 can remove 96.5% of 50 mg L^-1 allethrin in minimal medium within 11 days. The first-order kinetic analysis of degradation demonstrated that the half-life of allethrin degradation by strain HLJ7 was 3.56 days, which was significantly shorter than the 55.89 days of the control. The Box-Behnken design of the response surface method optimized the degradation conditions for strain HLJ7: temperature 32.18 °C, pH value 7.52, and inoculation amount 1.31 × 10⁷ CFU mL^-1. Using Andrews equation, the optimal concentration of strain HLJ7 to metabolize allethrin was determined to be 21.15 mg L^-1, and the maximum specific degradation rate (q_max), half-rate constant (K_s) and inhibition coefficient (K_i) were calculated to be 1.80 d^-1, 1.85 mg L^-1 and 68.13 mg L^-1, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry identified five intermediate metabolites, suggesting that allethrin could be degraded firstly by cleavage of its carboxylester bond, followed by degradation of the five-carbon ring and subsequent metabolism. The results of soil remediation experiments showed that strain HLJ7 has excellent bioremediation potential in the soils. After 15 days of treatment, about 70.8% of the initial allethrin (50 mg kg^-1) was removed and converted into nontoxic intermediate metabolites, and its half-life was significantly reduced in the soils. Taken together, these findings shed light on the degradation mechanisms of allethrin and also highlight the promising potentials of B. megaterium HLJ7 in bioremediation of allethrin-comtaminated environment.

Microalgae-based removal of pollutants from wastewaters: Occurrence, toxicity and circular economy

The natural and anthropogenic sources of water bodies are contaminated with diverse categories of pollutants such as antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, organic compounds, and other industrial chemicals. Depending on the type and the origin of the pollutants, the degree of contamination can be categorized into lower to higher concentrations. Therefore, the removal of hazardous chemicals from the environment is an important aspect. The physical, chemical and biological approaches have been developed and implemented to treat wastewaters. The microbial and algal treatment methods have emerged as a growing field due to their eco-friendly and sustainable approach. Particularly, microalgae emerged as a potential organism for the treatment of contaminated water bodies. The microalgae of the genera Chlorella, Anabaena, Ankistrodesmus, Aphanizomenon, Arthrospira, Botryococcus, Chlamydomonas, Chlorogloeopsis, Dunaliella, Haematococcus, Isochrysis, Nannochloropsis, Porphyridium, Synechococcus, Scenedesmus, and Spirulina reported for the wastewater treatment and biomass production. Microalgae have the potential for adsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. The microalgal strains can mitigate the hazardous chemicals via their diverse cellular mechanisms. Applications of the microalgae strains were found to be effective for sustainable developments and circular economy due to the production of biomass with the utilization of pollutants.

Proteomic analysis of Burkholderia zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 during the methyl parathion degradation process

Methyl parathion is an organophosphorus pesticide widely employed worldwide to control pests in agricultural and domestic environments. However, due to its intensive use, high toxicity, and environmental persistence, methyl parathion is recognized as an important ecosystem and human health threat, causing severe environmental pollution events and numerous human poisoning and deaths each year. Therefore, identifying and characterizing microorganisms capable of fully degrading methyl parathion and its degradation metabolites is a crucial environmental task for the bioremediation of pesticide-polluted sites. Burkholderia zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 is a bacterial strain isolated from agricultural soils capable of immediately hydrolyzing methyl parathion at a concentration of 50 mg/L and degrading the 100% of the released p-nitrophenol in a 12-hour lapse when cultured in minimal salt medium. In this study, a comparative proteomic analysis was conducted in the presence and absence of methyl parathion to evaluate the biological mechanisms implicated in the methyl parathion biodegradation and resistance by the strain B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3. In each treatment, the changes in the protein expression patterns were evaluated at three sampling times, zero, three, and nine hours through the use of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and the differentially expressed proteins were identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The proteomic analysis allowed the identification of 72 proteins with differential expression, 35 proteins in the absence of the pesticide, and 37 proteins in the experimental condition in the presence of methyl parathion. The identified proteins are involved in different metabolic processes such as the carbohydrate and amino acids metabolism, carbon metabolism and energy production, fatty acids β-oxidation, and the aromatic compounds catabolism, including enzymes of the both p-nitrophenol degradation pathways (Hydroquinone dioxygenase and Hydroxyquinol 1,2 dioxygenase), as well as the overexpression of proteins implicated in cellular damage defense mechanisms such as the response and protection of the oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species defense, detoxification of xenobiotics, and DNA repair processes. According to these data, B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 overexpress different proteins related to aromatic compounds catabolism and with the p-nitrophenol  degradation pathways, the higher expression levels observed in the two subunits of the enzyme Hydroquinone dioxygenase, suggest a preferential use of the Hydroquinone metabolic pathway in the p-nitrophenol degradation process. Moreover the overexpression of several proteins implicated in the oxidative stress response, xenobiotics detoxification, and DNA damage repair reveals the mechanisms employed by B. zhejiangensis CEIB S4-3 to counteract the adverse effects caused by the methyl parathion and p-nitrophenol exposure.

Indigenous bacterial consortium-mediated cypermethrin degradation in the presence of organic amendments and Zea mays plants

Cypermethrin is a toxic pyrethroid insecticide that is widely used in agricultural and household activities. One of the most serious issues is its persistence in the environment, because it is easily transported to the soil and aquatic ecosystem. The biodegradation of cypermethrin is emerging as an environmentally friendly method for large-scale treatment. This study examined the application of a novel binary bacterial combination-based (Bacillus thuringiensis strain SG4 and Bacillus sp. strain SG2) approach used for the enhanced degradation of cypermethrin from the environment. The bacterial strains degraded cypermethrin (80% and 85%) in the presence of external nitrogen sources (KNO₃ and NaNO₃). Furthermore, when immobilized in agar disc beads, the co-culture degraded cypermethrin (91.3%) with a half-life (t_1/2) of 4.3 days compared to 4.9 days using sodium alginate beads. Cereal straw, farmyard manure, press mud compost, fresh cow dung, and gypsum were used as organic amendments in the soil to stimulate cypermethrin degradation. Cereal straw promoted the fastest cypermethrin degradation among the different organic amendments tested, with a t_1/2 of 4.4 days. The impact of cypermethrin-degrading bacterial consortium on cypermethrin rhizoremediation was also investigated. Bacterial inoculums exhibited beneficial effects on plant biomass. Moreover, Zea mays and the bacterial partnership substantially enhanced cypermethrin degradation in soil. Six intermediate metabolites were detected during the degradation of cypermethrin, indicating that cypermethrin could be degraded first by the hydrolysis of its carboxyl ester bond, followed by the cleavage of the diaryl linkage and subsequent metabolism. Our findings highlight the promising potential and advantages of the bacterial consortium for the bioremediation of a cypermethrin-contaminated environment.

Insight into bacterial community profiles of oil shale and sandstone in ordos basin by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods

To promote the exploitation of unconventional oil resources by indigenous microorganisms, the bacterial community profiles of oil shale and sandstone in Ordos Basin were investigated using Illumina Miseq sequencing combined with the culture-based method, which was performed and reported in this literature for the first time. A total of 601 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained from collected samples, the predominant phylum present in all samples was Proteobacteria (76.96%-93.07%). Discriminatory bacterial community profiles existed in those samples by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, with variations not only in diversity indices but also in the abundance of bacteria at different genus levels. The dominant genera in cultured sandstone sample (SCB), uncultured sandstone sample (SUB), cultured shale sample (YCB), uncultured shale sample (YUB) were Enhydrobacter (71.62%), Acidovorax (42.44%), Pseudomonas (40.13%), Variovorax (70.02%), respectively. Both sample sources and culturing methods were the principal factors affecting the variation, while the communities' structures were favored primarily by culture-dependent or culture-independent approaches. The high abundance of hydrocarbon degradation-related genes was exhibited in YCB, which reveals a great potential for utilization of the culture-dependent method in shale oil exploitation. This study provided guidance for the exploitation of shale oil and sandstone oil by artificial utilization of indigenous bacteria.

Mechanism and kinetics of chlorpyrifos co-metabolism by using environment restoring microbes isolated from rhizosphere of horticultural crops under subtropics

The indiscriminate use of organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos in agricultural crops causes significant soil and water pollution and poses a serious threat to the global community. In this study, a microbial consortium ERM C-1 containing bacterial strains Pseudomonas putida T7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa M2, Klebsiella pneumoniae M6, and a fungal strain Aspergillus terreus TF1 was developed for the effective degradation of chlorpyrifos. Results revealed that microbial strains were not only utilizing chlorpyrifos (500 mg L^–1) but also coupled with plant growth-promoting characteristics and laccase production. PGP traits, that is, IAA (35.53, 45.53, 25.19, and 25.53 μg mL^–1), HCN (19.85, 17.85, 12.18, and 9.85 μg mL^–1), and ammonium (14.73, 16.73, 8.05, and 10.87 μg mL^–1) production, and potassium (49.53, 66.72, 46.14, and 52.72 μg mL^–1), phosphate (52.37, 63.89, 33.33, and 71.89 μg mL^–1), and zinc (29.75, 49.75, 49.12, and 57.75 μg mL^–1) solubilization tests were positive for microbial strains T7, M2, M6, and TF1, respectively. The laccase activity by ERM C-1 was estimated as 37.53, 57.16, and 87.57 enzyme U mL^–1 after 5, 10, and 15 days of incubation, respectively. Chlorpyrifos degradation was associated with ERM C-1 and laccase activity, and the degree of enzyme activity was higher in the consortium than in individual strains. The biodegradation study with developed consortium ERM C-1 showed a decreased chlorpyrifos concentration from the 7th day of incubation (65.77% degradation) followed by complete disappearance (100% degradation) after the 30th day of incubation in the MS medium. First-order degradation kinetics with a linear model revealed a high k ^–day value and low t_1/2 value in ERM C-1. The results of HPLC and GC-MS analysis proved that consortium ERM C-1 was capable of completely removing chlorpyrifos by co-metabolism mechanism.

Biodegradation Pathway and Detoxification of β-cyfluthrin by the Bacterial Consortium and Its Bacterial Community Structure

In the process of microbial degradation of pyrethroid pesticides, the synergistic effect of the microbial community is more conducive to the complete degradation of toxic compounds than a single strain. At present, the degradation pathway of pyrethroids in a single strain has been well revealed, but the synergistic metabolism at the community level has not been well explained. This study elucidated the bacterial community succession, metabolic pathway, and phytotoxicity assessment during β-cyfluthrin biodegradation by a novel bacterial consortium enriched from contaminated soil. The results showed that the half-life of β-cyfluthrin at different initial concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 mg mL^-1 were 4.16, 7.34, 12.81, and 22.73 days, respectively. Enterobacter was involved in β-cyfluthrin degradation metabolism in the initial stage, and other bacterial genera (Microbacterium, Ochrobactrum, Pseudomonas, Hyphomicrobiaceae, Achromobacter, etc.) significantly contribute to the degradation of intermediate metabolites in the later stages. Functional gene prediction and metabolite analysis showed that xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism, especially benzoate degradation and metabolism by cytochrome P450 were the major means of β-cyfluthrin degradation. Further, two degradation pathways of β-cyfluthrin were proposed, which were mainly ester hydrolysis and oxidation to degrade β-cyfluthrin through the production of carboxylesterase and oxidoreductase. In addition, the inoculated bacterial consortium could degrade β-cyfluthrin residues in water and soil and reduce its phytotoxicity in Medicago sativa. Hence, this novel bacterial consortium has important application in the remediation environments polluted by β-cyfluthrin.

Characterization of a novel glyphosate-degrading bacterial species, Chryseobacterium sp. Y16C, and evaluation of its effects on microbial communities in glyphosate-contaminated soil

Widespread use of the herbicide glyphosate in agriculture has resulted in serious environmental problems. Thus, environment-friendly technological solutions are urgently needed for the removal of residual glyphosate from soil. Here, we successfully isolated a novel bacterial strain, Chryseobacterium sp. Y16C, which efficiently degrades glyphosate and its main metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Strain Y16C was found to completely degrade glyphosate at 400 mg·L-1 concentration within four days. Kinetics analysis indicated that glyphosate biodegradation was concentration-dependent, with a maximum specific degradation rate, half-saturation constant, and inhibition constant of 0.91459 d-1, 15.79796 mg·L-1, and 290.28133 mg·L-1, respectively. AMPA was identified as the major degradation product of glyphosate degradation, suggesting that glyphosate was first degraded via cleavage of its C-N bond prior to subsequent metabolic degradation. Strain Y16C was also found to tolerate and degrade AMPA at concentrations up to 800 mg·L-1. Moreover, strain Y16C accelerated glyphosate degradation in soil indirectly by inducing a slight alteration in the diversity and composition of soil microbial community. Taken together, our results suggest that strain Y16C may be a potential microbial agent for bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated soil.

Role of Insect Gut Microbiota in Pesticide Degradation: A Review

Insect pests cause significant agricultural and economic losses to crops worldwide due to their destructive activities. Pesticides are designed to be poisonous and are intentionally released into the environment to combat the menace caused by these noxious pests. To survive, these insects can resist toxic substances introduced by humans in the form of pesticides. According to recent findings, microbes that live in insect as symbionts have recently been found to protect their hosts against toxins. Symbioses that have been formed are between the pests and various microbes, a defensive mechanism against pathogens and pesticides. Insects' guts provide unique conditions for microbial colonization, and resident bacteria can deliver numerous benefits to their hosts. Insects vary significantly in their reliance on gut microbes for basic functions. Insect digestive tracts are very different in shape and chemical properties, which have a big impact on the structure and composition of the microbial community. Insect gut microbiota has been found to contribute to feeding, parasite and pathogen protection, immune response modulation, and pesticide breakdown. The current review will examine the roles of gut microbiota in pesticide detoxification and the mechanisms behind the development of resistance in insects to various pesticides. To better understand the detoxifying microbiota in agriculturally significant pest insects, we provided comprehensive information regarding the role of gut microbiota in the detoxification of pesticides.

Microbial Degradation of Aldrin and Dieldrin: Mechanisms and Biochemical Pathways

As members of the organochlorine group of insecticides, aldrin and dieldrin are effective at protecting agriculture from insect pests. However, because of excessive use and a long half-life, they have contributed to the major pollution of the water/soil environments. Aldrin and dieldrin have been reported to be highly toxic to humans and other non-target organisms, and so their use has gradually been banned worldwide. Various methods have been tried to remove them from the environment, including xenon lamps, combustion, ion conversion, and microbial degradation. Microbial degradation is considered the most promising treatment method because of its advantages of economy, environmental protection, and convenience. To date, a few aldrin/dieldrin-degrading microorganisms have been isolated and identified, including Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma viride, Pleurotus ostreatus, Mucor racemosus, Burkholderia sp., Cupriavidus sp., Pseudonocardia sp., and a community of anaerobic microorganisms. Many aldrin/dieldrin resistance genes have been identified from insects and microorganisms, such as Rdl, bph, HCo-LGC-38, S2-RDL^A302S, CSRDL1A, CSRDL2S, HaRdl-1, and HaRdl-2. Aldrin degradation includes three pathways: the oxidation pathway, the reduction pathway, and the hydroxylation pathway, with dieldrin as a major metabolite. Degradation of dieldrin includes four pathways: oxidation, reduction, hydroxylation, and hydrolysis, with 9-hydroxydieldrin and dihydroxydieldrin as major products. Many studies have investigated the toxicity and degradation of aldrin/dieldrin. However, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and biochemical mechanisms of aldrin/dieldrin. In this review paper, the microbial degradation and degradation mechanisms of aldrin/dieldrin are summarized in order to provide a theoretical and practical basis for the bioremediation of aldrin/dieldrin-polluted environment.
