Abstract
The escalating issue of environmental pollutants necessitates efficient, sustainable, and innovative wastewater treatment technologies. This review comprehensively analyzes the mechanisms and isotherms underlying the adsorption processes of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) polysaccharide-based hydrogels to remove heavy metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Polysaccharides are extensively utilized in hydrogel synthesis due to their biocompatibility, cost-effectiveness, and non-toxic nature. The synthesis of these hydrogels as semi-IPNs enhances their mechanical and structural robustness and adsorption capacity. This review explores the key parameters affecting adsorption performance, including pH, temperature, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. Findings highlight that semi-IPN polysaccharide-based hydrogels exhibit remarkable adsorption capabilities through electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and surface complexation. Furthermore, this review highlights the distinct advantages of semi-IPNs over other polymer networks. Semi-IPNs offer improved mechanical stability, higher adsorption efficiencies, and better reusability, making them a promising solution for wastewater treatment. Detailed isotherm models, including Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, were studied to understand these hydrogels' adsorption behavior and capacity for different pollutants. This study highlights the potential of semi-IPN polysaccharide-based hydrogels as effective adsorbents for heavy metals and dyes and as a promising solution for mitigating environmental pollution. The insights provided herein contribute to developing advanced materials for environmental remediation, aligning with global sustainability goals, and advancing wastewater treatment technology.

Abstract
Three-dimensional polymeric network of hydrogels avoids its dissolution into the aqueous region. Hydrogels must have strong structural integrity to be used for drug/nutraceutical delivery. A three factor-three-level Box-Behnken design was used to understand the effects of starch concentration, NaCl, and pH on the textural and structural integrity of Lysine modified kutki millet starch hydrogels. Various kinetic models were fitted to the time-course measurement of shrinkage behavior of both conventionally (CDHG) and freeze-dried (FDHG) hydrogel. Increasing the swelling temperature (5-50 °C) showed values of higher molecular weight of polymer chains between neighboring crosslinks ( M c ) ¯ (g/mol) for FDHG (9539.59-56,769.72) than CDHG (1096.28-11,420.48). Similarly, mesh size (ξ) was more for FDHG (38.63-109.53 Ȧ) than CDHG (10.97-42.74 Ȧ). However, other network parameters such as polymer volume fraction ( ∅ p ) was lower for FDHG (0.229-0.146) than CDHG (0.3882-0.222). These values suggest low swelling power of CDHG compared to FDHG. Thermodynamically, FDHG took less energy to swell than CDHG. The study showed that FDHG has better properties than CDHG and could be employed in nutraceutical delivery. Abstract
A superabsorbent hydrogel was prepared by the free-radical copolymerization of natural rubber (NR) latex with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) at NR loadings up to 50 wt%. An NR/PAA hydrogel containing 40 wt% of NR (NR-40) had a water absorption capacity of 214 g/g (21,400 %) of its dry weight. The compressive modulus increased 512 % and sample integrity was improved due to the physical entanglement of NR chains. NR-40 hydrogel removed 97 % of methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution in 1 h (at initial concentrations of 10-1000 mg/L) and produced a maximum removal of 1191 mg MB/g of hydrogel at an initial MB concentration of 4500 mg/L. The adsorption of MB was an endothermic process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction drove the process. After the in-situ incorporation of ZnO into NR-40, absorbed energy from sunlight generated active species that could photocatalytically degrade adsorbed MB in the hydrogel matrix. The scavenger tests indicated that superoxide radical anions and hydroxyl radicals were the main species for this process. The hydrogel composite material showed good stability and could be regenerated and reused over 10 cycles, degrading >80 % of the adsorbed dye. This novel natural-based hydrogel provides double functions of adsorption and photodegradation of toxic dyes without the requirement of chemicals and a separation process.

Abstract
Weakly anionic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) biocomposites based on starch (ST)-incorporated poly(acrylamide-co-itaconic acid)/ZnO (ST-PAI/ZnO) were synthesized by a simple one-pot method via free radical aqueous polymerization. Hybrid biocomposites exhibited lower equilibrium swelling compared with neat copolymer gel. For both hydrogels and cryogels, swelling followed a decreasing order as copolymer PAI > starch-free PAI/ZnO > ST-PAI/ZnO gels. With the addition of 9% ST and ZnO, the swelling ratio of gels decreased from 898 to 68.3, resulting in a significant increase in elastic modulus. Compared with a fixed amount of ST, biocomposite cryogels exhibited significantly higher modulus than hydrogels. With the addition of 9% ST, the elastic modulus of cryogels reached 22.2 kPa while it was 2.7 kPa for the hydrogels. An equation expressing the effective cross-linking density of semi-IPNs presented by a cubic polynomial as a function of starch was obtained. As pH increased with the presence of dicarboxylic acid units, a gradual increase in swelling occurred at two different pH values. A gradually reproducible swelling change of semi-IPNs was depicted with pH ranging from 2.1 to 11.2. Biocomposite cryogels showed rapid swelling in a buffer solution of pH 11.2 and rapid shrinking in pH 2.1. Salt-induced swelling testing showed that the ability to reduce the degree of swelling and solubility of starch was Br- > Cl- > NO3- > SO42- for anions consistent with the Hofmeister series. Adsorption efficiency for the removal of methyl violet (MV) dye was analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherm models. The results confirmed that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model are suitable for describing MV adsorption on semi-IPN biocomposites. The synthesized biocomposites with good swelling/deswelling kinetics in different pH-buffer solutions, high saline absorbency, desirable adsorption efficiency, and acceptable pH-dependent swelling reversibility can be considered as smart hybrid materials for the adsorption of the dye in water purification tasks.

Abstract
Water sources have become extremely scarce and contaminated by organic and inorganic industrial and agricultural pollutants as well as household wastes. Poisoning water resources by dyes and metals is a problem because contaminated water can leak into subsurface and surface sources, causing serious contamination and health problems. Therefore, developing wastewater treatment technologies is valuable. Today, hydrogels have attracted considerable attention owing to their broad applications. Hydrogels are polymeric network compositions with significant water-imbibing capacity. Hydrogels have potential applications in diverse fields such as biomedical, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biosensors. They can be prepared by using natural (biopolymers) and synthetic polymers. Synthetic polymer-based hydrogels obtained from petrochemicals are not environmentally benign; thus, abundant plant-based polysaccharides are found as more suitable compounds for making biodegradable hydrogels. Polysaccharides with many advantages such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, availability, inexpensiveness, etc. are widely employed for the preparation of environmentally friendly hydrogels. Polysaccharides-based hydrogels containing chitin, chitosan, gum, starch (St), etc. are employed to remove pollutants, metals, and dyes. Among these, St has attracted a lot of attention. St can be mixed with other compounds to make hydrogels, which remove dyes and metal ions to variable degrees of efficiency. Although St has numerous advantages, it suffers from drawbacks such as low stability, low water solubility, and fast degradability in water which limit its application as an environmental adsorbent. As an effective way to overcome these weaknesses, various modification approaches to form starch-based hydrogels (SBHs) employing different compounds have been reported. The preparation methods and applications of SBH adsorbents in organic dyes, hazardous materials, and toxic ions elimination from water resources have been comprehensively discussed in this review.

Abstract
The objective of this work is utilizing fly ash to synthesize tobermorite (TOB) with a higher specific surface area and layered structure, and incorporating it into the starch/acrylic acid network to boost the drought resistance, water retention and heavy metal adsorption properties. The water absorption and water retention performance and cadmium adsorption characteristics of tobermorite/leftover rice-based composite hydrogel (TOB@LR-CH) were evaluated by water absorption swelling test, soil evaporation test and batch adsorption experiment. By adjusting the addition of TOB and other synthesized conditions, the swelling property (from 114.80 g/g to 322.64 g/g), water retention (71.80 %, 144 h) and Cd2+ adsorption characteristics (up to 591.36 mg/g) were significantly enhanced. Adding a moderate amount of TOB (2 wt%) provided the most uniform tobermorite dispersion during synthesis, and TOB2@LR-CH exhibited the most stable three-dimensional network and highest proportion of effective TOB. The adsorption behavior of cadmium on TOB2@LR-CH was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Additionally, the regeneration test results displayed that the adsorption removal rate of cadmium by TOB2@LR-CH adsorbent remained stable after 5 cycles. This study demonstrates that TOB@LR-CH has good water absorption and water retention potential in arid and semi-arid soils, and also has potential application prospects in remediating Cd(II)-contaminated soil.

Abstract
New biobased hydrogels were prepared via a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) using polyacrylamide/chitosan (PAAM/chitosan) hydrogel for the adsorption of As(V) or poly acrylic acid/alginate (PAA/alginate) hydrogel for the adsorption of Cu(II). Both systems were crosslinked using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as the initiating agent. The hydrogels were characterized by SEM, Z-potential, and FTIR. Their performance was studied under different variables, such as the biopolymer effect, adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, and concentration of metal ions. The characterization of hydrogels revealed the morphology of the material, with and without biopolymers. In both cases, the added biopolymer provided porosity and cavities' formation, which improved the removal capacity. The Z-potential informed the surface charge of hydrogels, and the addition of biopolymers modified it, which explains the further metal removal ability. The FTIR spectra showed the functional groups of the hydrogels, confirming its chemical structure. In addition, the adsorption results showed that PAAM/chitosan can efficiently remove arsenic, reaching a capacity of 17.8 mg/g at pH 5.0, and it can also be regenerated by HNO3 for six cycles. On the other hand, copper-ion absorption was studied on PAA/alginate, which can remove with an adsorption capacity of 63.59 mg/g at pH 4.0, and the results indicate that it can also be regenerated by HNO3 for five cycles.

Abstract
This work first transformed hazardous aluminum waste into low-cost MgAl−layered double hydroxide@ANA zeolite (LDHs@ANA) composite for dye wastewater adsorption, which was meaningful for waste recovery and pollution control. Based on this strategy, the Al(OH)3 extracted from secondary aluminum dross (a hazardous waste in the aluminum industry) was used as an aluminum source to synthesize LDHs@ANA composite, which had more excellent adsorption capacity to methylene blue than MgAl−LDHs and ANA alone. The composite consisted of spherical ANA particles uniformly covered with LDH nanosheets, which effectively avoided a large amount of aggregation between nanosheets and increased specific surface areas and pore volumes. The kinetic results indicated that the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption site was the main factor affecting the adsorption process. The equilibrium studies showed the adsorption process was exothermic, and the Langmuir model best fitted for the adsorption process, with a maximum adsorption capacity reaching 65.27 mg/g. Meanwhile, the effects of pH, adsorbent concentration, initial methylene blue concentration, and adsorption time on the LDHs@ANA were analyzed. Overall, this work provides a fresh concept for the preparation of low-cost adsorbents from aluminum waste.

Abstract
The pollution and scarcity of freshwater resources are global problems that have a significant influence on human life. It is very important to remove harmful substances in the water to realize the recycling of water resources. Hydrogels have recently attracted attention due to their special three-dimensional network structure, large surface area, and pores, which show great potential for the removal of pollutants in water. In their preparation, natural polymers are one of the preferred materials because of their wide availability, low cost, and easy thermal degradation. However, when it is directly used for adsorption, its performance is unsatisfactory, so it usually needs to be modified in the preparation process. This paper reviews the modification and adsorption properties of polysaccharide-based natural polymer hydrogels, such as cellulose, chitosan, starch, and sodium alginate, and discusses the effects of their types and structures on performance and recent technological advances.

Abstract
Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Abstract
AbstractGreen nanocomposite hydrogels (ST-PHEMA/GO) comprised of starch and 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) reinforced with different ratios of graphene oxide (GO) were prepared via gamma radiation induced crosslinking polymerization. The chemical structure and morphology and the crystallinity were studied by FTIR FE-SEM, AFM, TEM and XRD, respectively. The swelling behavior of the claimed hydrogels was verified versus time and the pH-dependent swelling at three different irradiation dose:10, 20 and 30 kGy was also investigated. The results of the swelling study showed that the swelling capacity of the hydrogel networks varied with the changes of the pH of the solution, the GO content and the irradiation doses. Moreover, the swelling isotherm of all the prepared hydrogels followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism n < 0.5.

Abstract
In this work, a novel slow-release and water-retention nitrogen (N) fertilizer (SRWRNF) was prepared using moldy steamed bread-based starch-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylic amide) (SBS-g-P(AA/AM)) as the skeleton and urea-formaldehyde oligomers (UF) incorporated as the slow-release N source by semi-interpenetrating methods. Various analysis technologies including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize the structure and properties of SRWRNFs. Swelling measurements indicated that the maximum water absorbency of SBS-g-P(AA/AM)-UF samples was 104.2 g/g in distilled water. The water-retention study showed that the SBS-g-P(AA/AM)-UF improved the maximum soil water content by 15.3-17.6% while improving soil water-retention capacity. N release experiments confirmed that SBS-g-P(AA/AM)-UF enabling offered a gradual N supply in soil. In comparison to conventional urea and UF fertilizers, the maize yield of SBS-g-P(AA/AM)-UF was increased by 20.3 and 9.7%, respectively. This study implies that the SRWRNFs provide a promising feasibility for large-scale applications in agriculture.

Abstract
Hydrogel copolymers based on N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) and acrylic acid (AAc) were synthesized using a solution polymerization technique with different monomer ratios and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. This paper investigates the thermal stability, physical and chemical properties of the hydrogel copolymer. Testing includes Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis (CHNS). The copolymer composition was determined by elemental analysis, and the reactivity ratios of monomers were calculated through linearization methods such as Fineman–Ross (FR), inverted Fineman–Ross (IFR), Kelen–Tudos (KT) and Mayo–Lewis (ML). Good agreement was observed between the results of all four methods. The ratio of r1 and r2 were 0.38 (r1) and 1.45 (r2) (FR), 0.38 (r1) and 1.46 (r2) (IFR), 0.38 (r1) and 1.43 (r2) (KT), and 0.38 (r1) and 1.45 (r2) (ML). Hydrogel copolymers exhibited good thermal stability, and SEM showed three-dimensional porous structures. Antibiotic-free and antibiotic-loaded hydrogels demonstrated antimicrobial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. As the ratio of DMA in hydrogel copolymer increased, the activity of copolymer against bacteria enhanced. The results indicated that these hydrogels have the potential to be used as antibacterial materials.

Abstract
In this study, the capacity of methylene blue (MB) uptake from aqueous solution was investigated using acrylic amide-co-3-Allyloxy-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt/Gum Arabic semi-IPN hydrogel. The semi-IPN hydrogels were prepared by the classical free radical solution technique. The swelling experiments were carried out gravimetrically and the swelling kinetics parameters were calculated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed the semi-IPN hydrogel formation. The MB uptake was studied by the batch technique and the impact of different conditions was investigated. It was found that the obtained semi-IPN hydrogels gave adsorption capacity for the dye within a range of 101-187 mg g-1 at the initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order) and the adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin equations) were tested and the adsorption data was well described by the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.8718) was 655.2 mg g-1. The thermodynamic study indicated the spontaneity and the endothermic nature of MB adsorption. Furthermore, the usability study showed that the prepared adsorbents could be employed repeatedly for successive 5 cycles of adsorption and desorption.

Synthesis of photodegradable cassava starch-based double network hydrogel with high mechanical stability for effective removal of methylene blue. Int J Biol Macromol 2020; 168:875-886. Abstract
Synthetic hydrogel has been widely used in several applications, but poor mechanical stability and biodegradability limit their applications and raise environmental concerns. Here, a biodegradable hydrogel was developed via simple free-radical polymerization of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in the presence of cassava starch (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol). The hydrogel showed exceptional mechanical and physical properties. The structural morphology changed at higher CS content from a dense fiber-like porous network to larger pores with thicker cell walls. Due to the formation of a double network structure via physical entanglement, the compressive modulus significantly increased from 27 kPa (CS 0 wt%) to 127 kPa (CS 50 wt%). Reducing synthetic content (PAA) to 25 wt% and increasing CS content to 50 wt% did not reduce the removal efficiency of the hydrogel toward methylene blue (MB). The maximum adsorption capacity of the CS50 hydrogel was 417.0 mg/g. Data fitting to theoretical models indicated monolayer adsorption of MB on a homogeneous surface via chemisorption. Removal efficiency was higher than 70% at the 5th cycle of adsorption-desorption. The biodegradability and photodegradability of the hydrogel were improved by grafting with CS. The developed hydrogel represents an alternative biodegradable adsorbent for a sustainable system of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this study, a natural rubber (NR) based amphiphilic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) superabsorbent hydrogel was designed and synthesized with natural rubber-graft-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) [NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)] network and linear poly (diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC). Through a series of characterization and test, the structure, morphology, thermal properties, biodegradation, and swelling properties of NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC were determined. Subsequently, NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC was used for ammonium adsorption to remove ammonium nitrogen in aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior of the absorbent was also studied. Results showed that the maximum water absorbency of NR-g-P(AA-co-AM)/PDADMAC was 112.04 ± 6.55 g/g and water retention capacity of soil with the superabsorbent was 115.62 ± 2.08%. The NH4+ adsorption quickly reached equilibrium and the maximum adsorption capacity was 13.02 mmol g-1 calculated from Langmuir isotherm model. The results suggest that the product is efficient for ammonium removal and can be used as water-retaining agents.

Abstract
Superabsorbent hydrogels were synthesized from cassava starch (CS) and polyacrylamide (PAM) via radical polymerization. Scanning electron microscope revealed the porous structure of the hydrogels. Pore size was smaller at higher CS contents. Hydrogel containing 50 wt% CS (CS50) showed excellent water absorbency of >8000%, which was much greater than that of CS0 (pure PAM) hydrogel. This CS50 hydrogel removed >85% of methylene blue (MB) in <10 h with the greatest adsorption capacity of 2000 mg MB/g. The experimental results fitted the Freundlich and pseudo-second order models. After 4 cycles of use, the hydrogel could still remove >50% of MB in solution. Interestingly, the hydrogels were photodegradable and biodegradable. Buried in soil, the CS50 hydrogel was 80% degraded within 30 days whereas pure PAM was only 22% degraded.

Abstract
In this work, a novel bio-based polyurethane (PU) was synthesized by using a leftovers (SF)-based polyol and isocyanate for controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). Its chemical structure, surface elemental compositions and distribution were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and a multifunctional imaging electron spectrometer (XPS). The microstructure morphology of CRFs were examined by SEM. The nutrient release behaviors of CRFs were observed in water. The results demonstrated that SF-based PU-coated urea (FPU) had a denser structure and better nutrient releasing ability. Findings from this work indicated that the use of SF as a coating material of environment-friendly CRFs had great potential, and would hopefully be used for horticultural and agricultural applications.

Abstract
Hydrogel coating was explored to modulate the shape of keratin hair fiber. The motivation was the development of an eco-friendly methodology with non-toxic chemicals to modulate keratin fiber. Polymeric hydrogel of acrylic acid and N-N-dimethylacrylamide was prepared by free-radical polymerization in aqueous solution, using nano-alumina particles as crosslinker and potassium persulfate as an initiator. Physico-chemical properties of the hydrogel was investigated by Fourier transformer infrared spectrum (FTIR), thermal analysis and swelling ratio behavior. After hydrogel coating, morphological modification was observed from straight to curly hair effect. The influence of hydrogel coating on hair fiber was evaluated by perming efficiency supported by X-ray diffraction and morphological characterization (SEM and AFM). The durability of hydrogel coating was tested until four wash processes maintaining around 65% the new configuration of the hair fiber.

Abstract
Hydrogels have been widely used in water purification. However, there is not much discussion and comparison about the effects of different nanofillers on the reinforcement and adsorption performances of hydrogels, which can be subjected to rapid water flow and possess strong adsorption ability. In this work, polyacrylamide (PAAM)-sodium alginate (SA) interpenetrating polymer network-structured hydrogels were prepared by in situ polymerization. PAAM formed the first flexible network and SA constructed the second rigid network. Three kinds of inorganic nanoparticles including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanoclays (NCs), and nanosilicas (NSs) were incorporated into a PAAM-SA matrix via hydrogen bond. The obtained hydrogels exhibited a macroporous structure with low density (≈1.4 g/cm3) and high water content (≈83%). Compared with neat PAAM-SA, the hydrogels with inorganic nanoparticles possessed excellent mechanical strengths and elasticities, and the compression strength of PAAM-SA-NS reached up to 1.3 MPa at ε = 60% by adding only 0.036 g NS in a 30 g polymer matrix. However, CNT was the best filler to improve the adsorption capacity owing to its multi-walled hollow nanostructure, and the adsorption capacity of PAAM-SA-CNT was 1.28 times higher than that of PAAM-SA. The prepared hydrogels can be potential candidates for use as absorbents to treat wastewater.

Abstract
Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) of starch-graft-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/polyvinyl alcohol/clinoptilolite (starch-g-p(AA-co-AAm)/PVA/clino) superabsorbent nanocomposite was synthesized by free-radical graft co-polymerization technique in an aqueous solution. Taguchi method was used to optimize the synthesis reaction condition based on the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogels. FTIR, XRD, and SEM analyses were used to study the chemical and structural properties of the hydrogel samples. The equilibrium swelling capacity of the semi-IPN superabsorbent nanocomposite (364.82 g/g) was higher than that of neat hydrogel (286.21 g/g) and in both of them water penetration into hydrogel network occurred through non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. Incorporation of clino into the polymeric matrix not only increased the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogel, but also induced a substantial enhancement in its mechanical strength. Semi-IPN superabsorbent nanocomposite showed reasonable water absorbency under different loads, good salt and pH-sensitive swelling behavior, and better water retention capability, which make it potentially useful for hygiene products.

Abstract
The synthesis parameters for preparing a novel bio-composite adsorbent by integrating a copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylamide (AM) and crosslinker N, N'-methylene bis acrylamide (MBA), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Azadirachta Indica or Neem leaf (NL) and the process parameters for its subsequent use for adsorption of Pb(II) ion from water were optimized with central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM). The structure of the bio-composite was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, DMA, FESEM-EDX and PZC analysis. The optimized adsorbent prepared with a AM: HEMA molar ratio of 5:1, MBA, PEG and NL wt% of 0.75, 4 and 2.5, respectively showed 182.85 mg/g (92.5%) adsorption of Pb(II) from water containing low concentration of 50 mg/L of Pb(II) ion and 911 mg/L (57%) adsorption of the same metal ion for a high feed concentration of 400 mg/L in a solution pH of 6, adsorbent dose of 0.25 g/L and a feed temperature of 30 °C. This functional bio-composite may also be suitably used for separation of other metal ions and polar molecules from water.

Abstract
Nearly 1.3 billion tons of food are discarded annually in the production process. In this study, a novel slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with water absorbency was developed using leftover rice and crosslinking methods. Urea was incorporated as the nitrogen source in a leftover rice-g-poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite (LR-g-PAA/MMT) network, and then the leftover rice-g-poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite/Urea (LR-g-PAA/MMT/Urea) retained in the soil, and used as the loss control agent for water and nutrients. Variables including concentrations of acrylic acid, montmorillonite, N,N´-methylenebis acrylamide (MBA), and potassium persulfate (KPS) were investigated. Samples were with a water absorbency of 102.6g/g in distilled water and 25.1g/g in 1.0wt% NaCl solution under optimized conditions. Swelling measurements and water-retention indicated that higher-covalent cations would aggregate the hydrogels and decrease swelling. Investigating leaching behavior showed that these samples have the potential to carry the necessary nitrogen (N). The results demonstrated that the LR-g-PAA/MMT/Urea had a low leaching losses of N (19.7%) compared with pure urea (52.3%). Therefore, the developed fertilizer may be widely applicable in agriculture and horticulture, and could provide a new platform for reusing leftover rice.

Abstract
Hydrogel nanocomposites were synthesized by solution polymerization of acrylic acid in the presence of sodium alginate biopolymer and TiO2 nanoparticle. TiO2 nanoparticle and N, N-methylene-bis-acrylamide was used as an inorganic and organic crosslinker, respectively. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposites were investigated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. The nanocomposites hydrogel was used for the adsorption of methyl violet dye from water. The influence of TiO2 nanoparticle, sodium alginate content and grafting on adsorption were studied. The results showed that a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic was predominant in the adsorption of methyl violet onto the nanocomposite hydrogel. The experimental equilibrated adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite hydrogel agrees with Langmuir isotherm. Maximum adsorption capacity of 1156.61 mg g−1 and adsorption efficiency of 99.6% towards methyl violet were obtained for the hydrogel nanocomposite.
