Abstract
Quercetin and its glycosides (QG), vitally natural flavonoid, have been popular for health benefits. However, the absorption and metabolism affect their bioavailability, and the metabolic transformation alters their biological activities. This review systematically summarizes the bioavailability and pathways for the absorption and metabolism of quercetin/QG in vivo and in vitro, the biological activities and mechanism of quercetin/QG and their metabolites in treating glucolipid metabolism are discussed. After oral administration, quercetin/QG are mainly absorbed by the intestine, undergo phase II metabolism in the small intestine and liver to form conjugates and are metabolized into small phenolic acids by intestinal microbiota. Quercetin/QG and their metabolites exert beneficial effects on regulating glucolipid metabolism disorders, including improving insulin resistance, inhibiting lipogenesis, enhancing thermogenesis, modulating intestinal microbiota, relieving oxidative stress, and attenuating inflammation. This review enhances understanding of the mechanism of quercetin/QG regulate glucolipid metabolism and provides scientific support for the development of functional foods.

Abstract
It is now widely recognized that gut microbiota plays a critical role not only in the development and progression of diseases, but also in its susceptibility to dietary patterns, food composition, and nutritional intake. In this comprehensive review, we have compiled the latest findings on the effects of food nutrients and bioactive compounds on the gut microbiota. The research indicates that certain components, such as unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, and protein have a significant impact on the composition of bile salts and short-chain fatty acids through catabolic processes, thereby influencing the gut microbiota. Additionally, these compounds also have an effect on the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides, as well as the abundance of specific species like Akkermansia muciniphila. The gut microbiota has been found to play a role in altering the absorption and metabolism of nutrients, bioactive compounds, and drugs, adding another layer of complexity to the interaction between food and gut microbiota, which often requires long-term adaptation to yield substantial outcomes. In conclusion, understanding the relationship between food compounds and gut microbiota can offer valuable insights into the potential therapeutic applications of food and dietary interventions in various diseases and health conditions.

Abstract
In this study, the antifatigue effect and mechanism of peanut sprouts were explored. BALB/c mice divided into three groups (control, dark and UV-C) were respectively supplemented with a normal diet, peanut sprouts (dark germination) added diet and stilbenes-enriched peanut sprouts (UV-C radiated germination) added diet. Results showed that swimming time and levels of blood glucose and antioxidant enzymes significantly increased, while contents of triglyceride and malondialdehyde notably decreased by peanut sprout supplementation. Besides, combined analysis of gut microbiota gene sequencing and targeted metabolomics of fecal metabolites revealed that peanut sprout supplementation up-regulated abundances and metabolic transformations of Catenibacillus, Odoribacter, Prevotellaceae-UCG-001 and Butyricicoccus while it down-regulated the abundance of Parabacteroides. Consequently, contents of sebacic acid, azelaic acid, suberic acid, heptanoic acid, pimelic acid, aminoadipic acid and mono-phenolics notably increased, which were markedly correlated with the antifatigue effect. Compared with the dark group, the swimming time, glutathione peroxidase activity, methylmalonylcarnitine content and abundances of Butyricicoccus, Catenibacillus and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 were higher in the UV-C group, while opposite results were obtained for the levels of triglyceride, malondialdehyde, alpha-linolenic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, 10Z-heptadecenoic acid and palmitelaidic acid. Overall, peanut sprout supplementation could alleviate fatigue by modulating gut microbiota composition to promote fatty acid oxidation and lysine and stilbene catabolism to increase energy supply and regulate redox balance. UV-C-radiated peanut sprout supplementation could alleviate fatigue more effectively by up-regulating abundances of Butyricicoccus, Catenibacillus and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 to promote long-chain fatty acid oxidation and catabolism of flavonoids and stilbenes efficiently.

Abstract
Overall diet, lifestyle choices, genetic predisposition, and other underlying health conditions may contribute to higher trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels and increased cardiovascular risk. This review explores the potential therapeutic ability of RSV to protect against cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and affect TMAO levels. This review considers recent studies on the association of TMAO with CVD. It also examines the sources, mechanisms, and metabolism of TMAO along with TMAO-induced cardiovascular events. Plant polyphenolic compounds, including resveratrol (RSV), and their cardioprotective mechanism of regulating TMAO levels and modifying gut microbiota are also discussed here. RSV's salient features and bioactive properties in reducing CVD have been evaluated. The close relationship between TMAO and CVD is clearly understood from currently available data, making it a potent biomarker for CVD. Precise investigation, including clinical trials, must be performed to understand RSV's mechanism, dose, effects, and derivatives as a cardioprotectant agent.

Abstract
Dysbiosis of the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract can induce the development of gynaecological tumours, particularly in postmenopausal women, by causing DNA damage and alterations in metabolite metabolism. Dysbiosis also complicates cancer treatment by influencing the body's immune response and disrupting the sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain homeostasis in the gut microbiota through the effective use of food components that affect its structure. Recent studies have shown that polyphenols, which are likely to be the most important secondary metabolites produced by plants, exhibit prebiotic properties. They affect the structure of the gut microbiota and the synthesis of metabolites. In this review, we summarise the current state of knowledge, focusing on the impact of polyphenols on the development of gynaecological tumours, particularly endometrial cancer, and emphasising that polyphenol consumption leads to beneficial modifications in the structure of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
The influence of gut microbiota on physiological processes is rapidly gaining attention globally. Despite being under-studied, there are available data demonstrating a gut microbiota-gonadal cross-talk, and the importance of this axis in reproduction. This study reviews the impacts of gut microbiota on reproduction. In addition, the possible mechanisms by which gut microbiota modulates male and female reproduction are presented. Databases, including Embase, Google scholar, Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, were explored using relevant key words. Findings showed that gut microbiota promotes gonadal functions by modulating the circulating levels of steroid sex hormones, insulin sensitivity, immune system, and gonadal microbiota. Gut microbiota also alters ROS generation and the activation of cytokine accumulation. In conclusion, available data demonstrate the existence of a gut microbiota-gonadal axis, and role of this axis on gonadal functions. However, majority of the data were compelling evidences from animal studies with a great dearth of human data. Therefore, human studies validating the reports of experimental studies using animal models are important.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM), a metabolic and endocrine condition, poses a serious threat to human health and longevity. The emerging role of gut microbiome associated with bioactive compounds has recently created a new hope for DM treatment. UHPLC-HRMS methods were used to identify these compounds in a poly herbal ethanolic extract (PHE). The effects of PHE on body weight (BW), fasting blood glucose (FBG) level, gut microbiota, fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production, and the correlation between DM-related indices and gut microbes, in rats were investigated. Chebulic acid (0.368%), gallic acid (0.469%), andrographolide (1.304%), berberine (6.442%), and numerous polysaccharides were the most representative constituents in PHE. A more significant BW gain and a reduction in FBG level towards normal of PHE 600 mg/kg treated rats group were resulted at the end of 28th days of the study. Moreover, the composition of the gut microbiota corroborated the study's hypothesis, as evidenced by an increased ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes and some beneficial microbial species, including Prevotella copri and Lactobacillus hamster. The relative abundance of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, Ruminococcus bromii, and Blautia producta was found to decline in PHE treatment groups as compared to diabetic group. The abundance of beneficial bacteria in PHE 600 mg/kg treatment group was concurrently associated with increased SCFAs concentrations of acetate and propionate (7.26 nmol/g and 4.13 nmol/g). The findings of this study suggest a promising approach to prevent DM by demonstrating that these naturally occurring compounds decreased FBG levels by increasing SCFAs content and SCFAs producing gut microbiota.

Abstract
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease which is strongly associated with age. The incidence of ALS increases from the age of 40 and peaks between the ages of 65 and 70. Most patients die of respiratory muscle paralysis or lung infections within three to five years of the appearance of symptoms, dealing a huge blow to patients and their families. With aging populations, improved diagnostic methods and changes in reporting criteria, the incidence of ALS is likely to show an upward trend in the coming decades. Despite extensive researches have been done, the cause and pathogenesis of ALS remains unclear. In recent decades, large quantities of studies focusing on gut microbiota have shown that gut microbiota and its metabolites seem to change the evolvement of ALS through the brain-gut-microbiota axis, and in turn, the progression of ALS will exacerbate the imbalance of gut microbiota, thereby forming a vicious cycle. This suggests that further exploration and identification of the function of gut microbiota in ALS may be crucial to break the bottleneck in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Hence, the current review summarizes and discusses the latest research advancement and future directions of ALS and brain-gut-microbiota axis, so as to help relevant researchers gain correlative information instantly.

Abstract
Prebiotic compounds were originally defined as "a nondigestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host health"; however, a significant modulation of the definition was carried out in the consensus panel of The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), and the last definition states that "prebiotics are substrates that are selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit". Health effects of prebiotics compounds attracted the interest of researchers, food companies and Regulatory Agencies, as inferred by the number of articles on Scopus for the keywords "prebiotic" and "health effects", that is ca. 2000, for the period January 2021-January 2024. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to contribute to the debate on these topics by offering an overview of existing knowledge and advances in this field. A literature search was performed for the period 2012-2023 and after the selection of the most relevant items, the attention was focused on seven conditions for which at least 8-10 different studies were found, namely colorectal cancer, neurological or psychiatric conditions, intestinal diseases, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and immune system disorders. In addition, the analysis of the most recent articles through the software VosViewer version 1.6.20 pointed out the existence of five clusters or macro-categories, namely: (i) pathologies; (ii) metabolic condvitions; (iii) structure and use in food; (iv) immunomodulation; (v) effect on gut microbiota.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The herbal pair of Trichosanthis Pericarpium (TP) - Trichosanthis Radix (TR) can be seen in the famous formula "Beimu Gualou San". It is a commonly selected combination of medicinal herbs for the treatment of cough with lung heat. Both drugs are derived from Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim, a medicinal plant known for its ability to clear heat, resolve phlegm, produce saliva, and alleviate dryness. However, the optimal combination ratio and active ingredients of TP-TR have yet to be determined. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to investigate the optimal combination ratio of TP-TR and its anti-inflammatory active ingredients in cough treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A zebrafish (Danio rerio) inflammatory injury model and response surface method were applied in the present study to determine the appropriate proportion of TP-TR. Chemical constituents in TP-TR were identified using HPLC-ELSD and UPLC-MS/MS methods. Subsequently, a cough mouse model was created using an ammonia solution to evaluate the effectiveness of the optimal TP-TR ratio. Network pharmacology and intestinal flora sequencing were used to validate the anti-inflammatory components of TP-TR. RESULTS The herbal pair of TP - TR at the ratio of 1:2 showed an optimal anti-inflammatory effect, with a composite inflammatory factor score of 119.645 in the zebrafish experiment. TP-TR combination facilitated the dissolution of glutamine, inosine, cytosine, isoquercetin, and other substances. In the animal model, the TP-TR (1:2) treatment significantly reduced the frequency of coughs and prolonged cough latency compared to the model group. Results of the network pharmacology indicated that inflammatory-related factors such as TLR4, STAT3, EGFR, and AKT1 played crucial roles in cough treatment with TP-TR, consistent with the validation experiment. The 16s rDNA sequencing results revealed a significant increase in the abundance of Clostridia_UCG-014, Lachnospiraceae, Christenella, Ruminococcus, and other species in the intestinal tract of mice after modelling. TP-TR (1:2) reduced the abundance of pro-inflammatory flora such as Clostridium_UCG-014 and Lachnospira, which were closely associated with L-lysine and trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline present in TP-TR according to correlation analysis. CONCLUSION TP-TR may promote the dissolution of glutamine, thymidine, inosine, cytosine, isoquercetin, and other components through their combination, thereby regulating the abundance of Clostridium_UCG-014 and Lachnospira and exerting an antitussive effect. This study, for the first time, showed that TP-TR at a 1:2 ratio exhibits superior anti-inflammatory effects. In addition to inflammatory mediators like EGFR, TLR4, AKT1, and STAT3, gut microbes could also serve as potential regulatory targets of TP-TR in the treatment of cough. 2'-Deoxyguanosine monohydrate, L-lysine, L-leucine, γ-aminobutyric acid, L-valine, L-tryptophan, L-proline, trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline, L-methionine, uridine, 2'-deoxyinosine, guanosine, cucurbitacin B and cucurbitacin D were identified as its anti-inflammatory active ingredients.

Abstract
Fu brick tea (FBT), a product of microbial fermentation from primary dark tea, also known as raw material tea (RMT), has been extensively studied for its functional properties. However, its potential as a staple food supplement for weight loss remains poorly understood. This study compared the weight loss effects of orlistat, traditional plain noodles (NN), and noodles supplemented with varying amounts of RMT (RMTN) and FBT (FBTN), with the aim to elucidate their lipid-reducing effects and underlying mechanisms. Experimental trials on high fat diet fed mice revealed significant weight loss, lipid-lowering, and hypoglycemic effects upon supplementation with orlistat, RMTN, and FBTN. Moreover, supplementation with orlistat, RMTN, and FBTN effectively restored serum and liver-related index levels, mitigating high-fat diet-induced dyslipidemia. Additionally, these supplements ameliorated liver and kidney damage by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, orlistat, RMTN, and FBTN exert their anti-obesity effects primarily by modulating genes associated with lipid metabolism and inflammatory responses and through regulation of the composition and structure of the gut microbiota. Importantly, FBTN demonstrated a significantly stronger lipid-lowering effect compared to RMTN, particularly at higher tea addition ratios. In contrast, NN supplementation exhibited minimal to no weight loss effects. Based on these findings, it could be inferred that FBT holds promise as a staple food supplement to ameliorate high-fat diet-induced obesity and its associated health conditions.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease that leads to severe bowel symptoms and complications. Currently, there is no effective treatment, and the exact cause of IBD remains unclear. In the last decades, numerous studies have confirmed that flavonoids can have a positive impact on the treatment of IBD. Therefore, this study investigated the protective effect of a flavonoid combination of apigenin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on IBD. In vitro studies in which Caco-2 cell monolayers were incubated with different concentrations of flavonoids found that the flavonoid-treated group exhibited increased transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) at high concentrations, indicating a protective effect on the barrier function of the intestinal epithelium. In vivo studies showed that flavonoids significantly attenuated inflammatory levels in both chronic and acute hapten-mediated experimental colitis models in a time- and dose-dependent manner. In addition, the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and the level of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon tissue were significantly reduced. Interestingly, the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines were also dramatically increased. Finally, flavonoids were found to positively modulate the composition of the gut microbiota in the colon. Therefore, a combination of flavonoids could be a promising therapeutic agent for the future adjunctive treatment of IBD.

Abstract
In recent years, gut microbiota as an immune organ has gradually become the mainstream of research. When the composition of the gut microbiota is changed significantly, this may affect human health. This review details the major microbiota composition and metabolites in the gut and discusses chronic diseases based on gut dysbiosis, including obesity, liver injury, colon cancer, atherosclerosis, and central nervous system diseases. We comprehensively summarize the changes in abundance of relevant gut microbiota by ingesting different diet components (such as food additives, dietary polyphenols, polysaccharides, fats, proteins) and their influence on the microbial quorum sensing system, thereby regulating related diseases. We believe that quorum sensing can be used as a new entry point to explain the mechanism of ingesting dietary components to improve gut microbiota and thereby regulate related diseases. This review hopes to provide a theoretical basis for future research on improving disease symptoms by ingesting functional foods containing dietary components. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The gut microbiota is a rich and dynamic ecosystem that actively interacts with the human body, playing a significant role in the state of health and disease of the host. Diet, exercise, mental health, and other factors have exhibited the ability to influence the gut bacterial composition, leading to changes that can prevent and improve, or favor and worsen, both intestinal and extra-intestinal conditions. Altered gut microbial states, or 'dysbiosis', associated with conditions and diseases are often characterized by shifts in bacterial abundance and diversity, including an impaired Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio. By understanding the effect of lifestyle on the gut microbiota, personalized advice can be generated to suit each individual profile and foster the adoption of lifestyle changes that can both prevent and ameliorate dysbiosis. The delivery of effective and reliable advice, however, depends not only on the available research and current understanding of the topic, but also on the methods used to assess individuals and to discover the associations, which can introduce bias at multiple stages. The aim of this review is to summarize how human gut microbial variability is defined and what lifestyle choices and diseases have shown association with gut bacterial composition. Furthermore, popular methods to investigate the human gut microbiota are outlined, with a focus on the possible bias caused by the lack of use of standardized methods. Finally, an overview of the current state of personalized advice based on gut microbiota testing is presented, underlining its power and limitations.

Abstract
This study discusses the effects of resveratrol (RES) on the productive performance, immune function and intestinal barrier function of broiler chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Two hundred and forty 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups of 6 replicates each, with 10 broilers per replicate. This experiment used a 2 × 2 factorial design with dietary factors (basal diets or basal diets supplemented with 400 mg/kg RES were administered from d 1 to 21) and stress factors (intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 mg/kg BW of saline or LPS at 16, 18 and 20 d of age). The results showed that LPS challenge had a significant adverse effect on average daily gain (ADG) in broilers at 16 to 21 d of age (P < 0.05), whereas the addition of RES to the diet inhibited the LPS-induced decrease in ADG (P < 0.05). RES also alleviated LPS-induced immune function damage in broilers, which was manifested by the decrease of spleen index (P < 0.05) and the recovery of serum immunoglobulin M and ileal secretory immunoglobulin A content (P < 0.05). The LPS challenge also disrupts intestinal barrier function and inflammation, and RES mitigates these adverse effects in different ways. RES attenuated LPS-induced reduction of villus height in the jejunum and ileum of broilers (P < 0.05). LPS also caused an abnormal increase in plasma D-lactic acid levels in broilers (P < 0.05), which was effectively mitigated by RES (P < 0.05). LPS challenge resulted in a significant decrease in mRNA expression of occludin in the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05), which was mitigated by the addition of RES (P < 0.05). RES significantly decreased the mRNA expression of toll-like receptor 4, nuclear factor kappa-B and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the ileum tissue stimulated by LPS (P < 0.05). Taken together, this study shows that RES exerts its beneficial effect on broilers challenged with LPS by alleviating immune function damage, relieving intestinal inflammation and barrier damage, and thus improving growth performance.

Abstract
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) dietary intervention is considered to have therapeutic potential against obesity. Microbial enrichment is an effective strategy to naturally and safely enhance GABA production in food. As litchi is "the king of GABA" in fruits, the retention or enrichment of its content during processing has been a key issue in the litchi industry. This study aimed to investigate the potential of GABA and fermented litchi juice enriched with GABA (FLJ) to protect against obesity in a high-fat diet (HFD) mouse model. Supplementation of GABA and FLJ displayed an anti-obesogenic effect by attenuating body weight gain, fat accumulation, and oxidative damage, and improving the serum lipid profile and hepatic function. Sequencing (16S rRNA) of fecal samples indicated that GABA and FLJ intervention displayed different regulatory effects on HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis at different taxonomic levels. The microbial diversity, the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes as well as the F/B ratio of GABA and FLJ groups were reversed compared to those of the HFD-induced mice. Our finding broadens the potential mechanisms by which GABA regulates gut flora in the amelioration of obesity and provides guidance for developing FLJ as a functional food to prevent obesity.

Abstract
Objectives Dietary fiber is recognized as an important nutrient for gut health. However, research on the relations of different types of fibers (soluble and insoluble) to the human microbiota health is limited. This study aimed to identify whether higher habitual intake of soluble and/or insoluble fiber have a different influence on the composition, diversity, and abundance of microbiota. Methods We examined the fecal microbial composition of 92 healthy females aged 18 and above using the novel shotgun metagenomics sequencing technique. The habitual fiber intake was determined using the Saudi food frequency questionnaire. Pearson's correlation was used for the correlations between total, soluble, and insoluble fiber and gut microbiota. α- and β-diversities were applied to acquire the distinctions in the relative abundances of bacterial taxa. Results Our findings show that higher dietary fiber, particularly insoluble fiber, was significantly correlated with the abundances of Bacteroides_u_s, Bacteroides uniformis, and Lactobacillus acidophilus (r = 0.26, 0.29, 0.26, p-value < 0.05, respectively). Non-significant difference was noted in the microbial α-diversity and β-diversity in low and high soluble/insoluble dietary fiber. Conclusions Current findings suggest that insoluble dietary-fiber intake is favorably correlated with the health of the human gut microbiota. However, further investigations are necessary to identify the effect of types of fiber on the specific species identified in this study.

Abstract
Obesity is known as a transgenerational vicious cycle and has become a global burden due to its unavoidable complications. Modern approaches to obesity management often involve the use of pharmaceutical drugs and surgeries that have been associated with negative side effects. In contrast, natural antioxidants, such as flavonoids, have emerged as a promising alternative due to their potential health benefits and minimal side effects. Thus, this narrative review explores the potential protective role of flavonoids as a natural antioxidant in managing obesity. To identify recent in vivo studies on the efficiency of flavonoids in managing obesity, a comprehensive search was conducted on Wiley Online Library, Scopus, Nature, and ScienceDirect. The search was limited to the past 10 years; from the search, we identified 31 articles to be further reviewed. Based on the reviewed articles, we concluded that flavonoids offer novel therapeutic strategies for preventing obesity and its associated co-morbidities. This is because the appropriate dosage of flavonoid compounds is able to reduce adipose tissue mass, the formation of intracellular free radicals, enhance endogenous antioxidant defences, modulate the redox balance, and reduce inflammatory signalling pathways. Thus, this review provides an insight into the domain of a natural product therapeutic approach for managing obesity and recapitulates the transgenerational inheritance of obesity, the current available treatments to manage obesity and its side effects, flavonoids and their sources, the molecular mechanism involved, the modulation of gut microbiota in obesity, redox balance, and the bioavailability of flavonoids. In toto, although flavonoids show promising positive outcome in managing obesity, a more comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the advantageous impacts of flavonoids-achieved through translation to clinical trials-would provide a novel approach to inculcating flavonoids in managing obesity in the future as this review is limited to animal studies.

Abstract
Red beetroot is a well-recognized and established source of bioactive compounds (e.g., betalains and polyphenols) with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is proposed as a potential alternative to zinc oxide with a focus on gut microbiota modulation and metabolite production. In this study, weaned pigs aged 28 days were fed either a control diet, a diet supplemented with zinc oxide (3000 mg/kg), or 2% and 4% pulverized whole red beetroot (CON, ZNO, RB2, and RB4; respectively) for 14 days. After pigs were euthanized, blood and digesta samples were collected for microbial composition and metabolite analyses. The results showed that the diet supplemented with red beetroot at 2% improved the gut microbial richness relative to other diets but marginally influenced the cecal microbial diversity compared to a zinc-oxide-supplemented diet. A further increase in red beetroot levels (4%-RB4) led to loss in cecal diversity and decreased short chain fatty acids and secondary bile acid concentrations. Also, an increased Proteobacteria abundance, presumably due to increased lactate/lactic-acid-producing bacteria was observed. In summary, red beetroot contains several components conceived to improve the gut microbiota and metabolite output of weaned pigs. Future studies investigating individual components of red beetroot will better elucidate their contributions to gut microbiota modulation and pig health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Increasing attention is being afforded to understanding the bidirectional relationships that exist between oral medications and the gut microbiota, in an attempt to optimize pharmacokinetic performance and mitigate unwanted side effects. While a wealth of research has investigated the direct impact of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) on the gut microbiota, the interactions between inactive pharmaceutical ingredients (i.e. excipients) and the gut microbiota are commonly overlooked, despite excipients typically representing over 90% of the final dosage form. AREAS COVERED Known excipient-gut microbiota interactions for various classes of inactive pharmaceutical ingredients, including solubilizing agents, binders, fillers, sweeteners, and color additives, are reviewed in detail. EXPERT OPINION Clear evidence indicates that orally administered pharmaceutical excipients directly interact with gut microbes and can either positively or negatively impact gut microbiota diversity and composition. However, these relationships and mechanisms are commonly overlooked during drug formulation, despite the potential for excipient-microbiota interactions to alter drug pharmacokinetics and interfere with host metabolic health. The insights derived from this review will inform pharmaceutical scientists with the necessary design considerations for mitigating potential adverse pharmacomicrobiomic interactions when formulating oral dosage forms, ultimately providing clear avenues for improving therapeutic safety and efficacy.

Abstract
The present study investigated whether quercetin mitigated fescue toxicosis-induced cardiovascular injury via the heart-gut axis. Twenty-four commercial Dorper lambs were stratified by body weight and assigned randomly to diets in one of four groups: endophyte-free without quercetin (E-,Q-), endophyte-positive without quercetin (E+,Q-), endophyte-positive plus 4 g/kg quercetin (E+,Q+) or endophyte-free plus 4 g/kg quercetin (E-,Q+) for 42 days. Body weight and average daily feed intake (ADFI) of lambs fed the endophyte-positive diets showed significant decreases. However, in the groups treated with quercetin, there were significant alterations of cardiac enzymes. Furthermore, reduced fescue toxicosis-induced histopathological lesions of heart and aorta were demonstrated in the E+,Q+ lambs. Results also suggested quercetin eased cardiovascular oxidative injury by inhibiting the increase of oxidative metabolites, and enhancing the levels of antioxidases. Quercetin reduced the inflammation response through suppressing NF-κB signaling pathway activation. Additionally, quercetin ameliorated fescue toxicosis-induced mitochondria dysfunction and improved mitochondrial quality control through enhancing PGC-1α-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis, maintaining the mitochondrial dynamics, and relieving aberrant Parkin/PINK-mediated mitophagy. Quercetin enhanced gastrointestinal microbial alpha and beta diversity, alleviated gut microbiota and microbiome derived metabolites-SCFAs dysbiosis by fescue toxicosis. These findings signified that quercetin may play a cardio-protective role via regulating the heart-gut microbiome axis.

Abstract
Visitors to high altitude are susceptible to hypoxia-induced acute intestinal mucosal barrier injury and severe gastrointestinal disorders, which are life-threatening. Citrus tangerine pith extract (CTPE) is rich in pectin and flavonoids and has been proved to enhance intestinal health and improve gut dysbiosis. In this study, we aim to explore the protective effect of CTPE on ileum injury induced by intermittent hypobaric hypoxia in a mouse model. Balb/c mice were divided into blank normoxia (BN), blank hypobaric hypoxia (BH), hypobaric hypoxia plus CTPE (TH), and hypobaric hypoxia plus Rhodiola extract (RH) groups. From the 6th day of gavage, mice in BH, TH, and RH groups were transferred into a hypobaric chamber at a simulated elevation of 6000 m for 8 hours per day for 10 days. Then half the mice were tested for small intestine movement, and others were used to evaluate intestinal physical barrier function, inflammation, and gut microbiota. Results showed that CTPE reversed the increase of intestinal peristalsis, effectively attenuated impaired structural integrity of ileum, improved the mRNA and protein expression levels of tight junction proteins, and reduced serum D-LA content in mice to alleviate hypoxia-induced mucosal barrier damage. Moreover, CTPE supplementation ameliorated hypoxia-induced intestinal inflammation response by significantly downregulating the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ. By 16S rDNA gene sequencing of gut microbiota, CTPE significantly increased the abundance of probiotic Lactobacillus, suggesting that CTPE may be used as a prebiotic to regulate ecology of intestinal microorganisms. In addition, Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed that changed gut microbiota were significantly correlated with alteration of intestinal barrier function indexes. Taken together, these results indicate that CTPE effectively alleviates hypoxia-induced intestinal injury in mice and enhances intestinal integrity and barrier function by altering intestinal microbiota composition.

Abstract
Insulin resistance (IR) and the associated hyperinsulinemia are early pathophysiological changes which, if not well treated, can lead to type 2 diabetes, endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. While diabetes care is fairly well standardized, the prevention and treatment of IR lacks a single pharmaceutical approach and many lifestyle and dietary interventions have been proposed, including a wide range of food supplements. Among the most interesting and well-known natural remedies, alkaloid berberine and the flavonol quercetin have particular relevance in the literature, while silymarin-the active principle of the Silybum marianum thistle-was traditionally used for lipid metabolism disorders and to sustain liver function. This review describes the major defects of insulin signaling leading to IR and the main properties of the three mentioned natural substances, their molecular targets and synergistic action mechanisms. The actions of berberine, quercetin and silymarin are partially superimposable as remedies against reactive oxygen intermediates generated by a high-lipid diet and by NADPH oxidase, which is triggered by phagocyte activation. Furthermore, these compounds inhibit the secretion of a battery of pro-inflammatory cytokines, modulate intestinal microbiota and are especially able to control the various disorders of the insulin receptor and post-receptor signaling systems. Although most of the evidence on the effects of berberine, quercetin and silymarin in modulating insulin resistance and preventing cardiovascular disease derive from experimental studies on animals, the amount of pre-clinical knowledge strongly suggests the need to investigate the therapeutic potential of these substances in human pathology.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of age-related disorders characterized by a chronic and progressive loss of function and/or structure of synapses, neurons, and glial cells. The etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases is characterized by a complex network of intricately intertwined pathophysiological processes that are still not fully understood. Safe and effective disease-modifying treatments are urgently needed, but still not available. Accumulating evidence suggests that gastrointestinal dyshomeostasis and microbial dysbiosis might play an important role in neurodegeneration by acting as either primary or secondary pathophysiological factors. The research on the role of microbiota in neurodegeneration is in its early phase; however, accumulating evidence suggests that dysbiosis might promote neurodegenerative diseases by disrupting mitochondrial function and inducing mitochondrial dysfunction-associated senescence (MiDAS), possibly due to bidirectional crosstalk based on the common evolutionary origin of mitochondria and bacteria. Cellular senescence is an onco-supressive homeostatic mechanism that results in an irreversible cell cycle arrest upon exposure to noxious stimuli. Senescent cells resist apoptosis via senescent cell anti-apoptotic pathways (SCAPs) and transition into a state known as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that generates a cytotoxic proinflammatory microenvironment. Cellular senescence results in the adoption of a detrimental vicious cycle driven by dysbiosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress - a pathophysiological positive feedback loop that results in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Detrimental effects of MiDAS might be prevented and abolished by mitochondria-targeted senotherapeutics, a group of drugs specifically designed to alleviate senescence by inhibiting SCAPs (senolytics), or inhibiting SASP (senomorphics).

Abstract
The role of the composition of the gut microbiota on human health is not well understood. However, during the past decade, an increased emphasis has been placed on the influence of the impact of nutrition on the composition of gut microbiota and how the gut microbiota affects human health. The current review focuses on the role of some of the most studied phytochemicals on the composition of the gut microbiota. First, the review highlights the state of the research evidence regarding dietary phytochemical consumption and gut microbiota composition, including the influence of phytochemicals such as polyphenols, glucosinolates, flavonoids, and sterols that are present in vegetables, nuts, beans, and other foods. Second, the review identifies changes in health outcomes with altered gut microbiota composition, in both animal and human model studies. Third, the review highlights research that includes both associations between dietary phytochemical consumption and gut microbiota composition, and associations between the gut microbiota composition and health outcomes, in order to elucidate the role of the gut microbiota in the relationship between dietary phytochemical consumption and health outcomes in humans and animals. The current review indicated that phytochemicals can beneficially alter gut microbiota composition and decrease the risk for some diseases, such as cancers, and improve some cardiovascular and metabolic risk biomarkers. There is an urgent demand for high-quality studies that determine the relationships between the consumption of phytochemicals and health outcomes, examining gut microbiota as a moderator or mediator.

Abstract
The human microbiota-gut-brain axis has an enormous role in the maintenance of homeostasis and health. Over the last two decades, it has received concerted research attention and focus due to a rapidly emerging volume of evidence that has established that impairment within the microbiota-gut-brain axis contributes to the development and progression of various diseases. Stroke is one of the entities identified to be associated with microbiota-gut-brain axis impairment. Currently, there are still limitations in the clinical treatment of stroke, and the presence of a non-nervous factor from gut microbiota that can alter the course of stroke presents a novel strategy towards the search for a therapeutic silver bullet against stroke. Hence, the aim herein, was to focus on the involvement of microbiota-gut-brain axis impairment in the pathogenesis stroke as well as elucidate its implications as a potent therapeutic target against stroke. The findings of studies to date have revealed and extended the role microbiota-gut-brain axis impairment in the pathogenesis of stroke, and studies have identified from both clinical and pre-clinical perspectives targets within the microbiota-gut-brain axis and successfully modulated the outcome of stroke. It was concluded that the microbiota-gut-brain axis stands as potent target to salvage the neurons in the ischemic penumbra for the treatment of stroke. Assessment of the microbiota profile and its metabolites status holds enormous clinical potentials as a non-invasive indicator for the early diagnosis and prognosis of stroke.

Abstract
Bioaccessibility and bioactivity of flavonoids in lotus leaves are related to their characteristics in gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation. The aim of this study is to investigate the stability of lotus leaf flavonoids (LLF) in simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and its modulation on gut microbiota in vitro fermentation. Results showed that LLF mainly consisted of quercetin-3-O-galactoside, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, and kaempferol-3-O-glucoside. These flavonoids kept stability with only a small fraction degraded in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. In vitro fermentation, LLF stimulated the growth of Actinobacteria and Firmicutes, inhibited the growth of Proteobacteria, and induced the production of fermentation gases and short-chain fatty acids. Interestingly, supplementation of soluble starch significantly improved the utilization of LLF by the intestinal flora. These results revealed that LLF shaped a unique biological web with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. as the core of the biological network, which would be more beneficial to gut health.

Abstract
Arbequina table olive (AO) consumption lowers blood pressure (BP) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). This study evaluates whether dietary supplementation with AO induced changes in the gut microbiota that are consistent with the purported antihypertensive effects. Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY-c) and SHR-c received water, while SHR-o were supplemented by gavage with AO (3.85 g kg-1) for 7 weeks. Faecal microbiota was analysed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. SHR-c showed increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes compared to WKY-c. AO supplementation in SHR-o decreased BP by approximately 19 mmHg, and reduced plasmatic concentrations of malondialdehyde and angiotensin II. Moreover, reshaped faecal microbiota associated with antihypertensive activity by lowering Peptoniphilus and increasing Akkermansia, Sutterella, Allobaculum, Ruminococcus, and Oscillospira. Also promoted the growth of probiotic strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and modified the relationship of Lactobacillus with other microorganisms, from competitive to symbiotic. In SHR, AO promotes a microbiota profile compatible with the antihypertensive effects of this food.

Abstract
Quercetin loaded alginate microspheres, fabricated with the inclusion of inulin as a prebiotic source and chitosan as protective coating (ALINCH-Q), were subjected to in vitro colonic fermentation using pig fecal microbiota, with empty microspheres ALINCH-E, unencapsulated quercetin UQ and media only Blank as parallel studies. ALINCH-Q altered quercetin biotransformation towards higher production of 3-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and further metabolism of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid compared to UQ. In addition, ALINCH-Q but not ALINCH-E or UQ significantly promoted SCFAs production compared to Blank. Furthermore, the ALINCH-Q microspheres altered the microbial compositions, increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Turicibacter, Eubacterium, and Clostridium, while decreased that of the potentially pathogenic Enterococcus. The results suggest an interplay between the dietary fiber matrix and quercetin in producing these effects, and that ALINCH-Q could serve as a potential targeted delivery vehicle for quercetin to exert beneficial biological effects in the colon.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effects of organic vegetable juice (OVJ) supplementation on modulating the microbial community, and how its consumption ameliorated blood-lipid profiles in diet-induced obese mice. Here, we studied the alleviating effect of hyperlipidemia via animal experiments using diet-induced obese mice and analyzed the effect of OVJ on the microbial community in continuous colon simulation system. OVJ consumption did not have a significant effect on weight loss but helped reduce the weight of the epididymis fat tissue and adipocytes. Additionally, blood-lipid profiles, such as triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, and glucose, were improved in the OVJ-fed group. Expression levels of genes related to lipid synthesis, including SREBP-1, PPARγ, C/EBPα, and FAS, were significantly decreased. In addition, OVJ treatment significantly reduced inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress. OVJ supplement influenced intestinal bacterial composition from phylum to genus level, including decreased Proteobacteria in the ascending colon in the phylum. At the family level, Akkermansia, which are associated with obesity, were significantly augmented in the transverse colon and descending colon compared to the control juice group. In addition, treatment with OVJ affected predicted lipid-metabolism-function genes related to lipid synthesis. These results suggest that OVJ supplementation may modulate gut microbial community and reduce the potential symptom of hyperlipidemia in diet-obese mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical research in natural product-based psychopharmacology has revealed a variety of promising herbal medicines that may provide benefit in the treatment of mild mood disorders, however failed to unambiguously indicate pharmacologically active constituents. The emerging role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis opens new possibilities in the search for effective methods of treatment and prevention of mood disorders. PURPOSE Considering the clinically proven effectiveness juxtaposed with inconsistencies regarding the indication of active principles for many medicinal plants applied in the treatment of anxiety and depression, the aim of the review is to look at their therapeutic properties from the perspective of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. METHOD A literature-based survey was performed using Scopus, Pubmed, and Google Scholar databases. The current state of knowledge regarding Hypericum perforatum, Valeriana officinalis, Piper methysticum, Passiflora incarnata, Humulus lupulus, Melissa officinalis, Lavandula officinalis, and Rhodiola rosea in terms of their antimicrobial activity, bioavailability, clinical effectiveness in depression/anxiety and gut microbiota - natural products interaction was summarized and analyzed. RESULTS Recent studies have provided direct and indirect evidence that herbal extracts and isolated compounds are potent modulators of gut microbiota structure. Additionally, some of the formed postbiotic metabolites exert positive effects and ameliorate depression-related behaviors in animal models of mood disorders. The review underlines the gap in research on natural products - gut microbiota interaction in the context of mood disorders. CONCLUSION Modification of microbiota-gut-brain axis by natural products is a plausible explanation of their therapeutic properties. Future studies evaluating the effectiveness of herbal medicine and isolated compounds in treating mild mood disorders should consider the bidirectional interplay between phytoconstituents and the gut microbiota community.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of disorders that cause chronic non-specific inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, primarily affecting the ileum and colon. The incidence of IBD has risen sharply in recent years. Despite continuous research efforts over the past decades, the aetiology of IBD is still not fully understood and only a limited number of drugs are available for its treatment. Flavonoids, a ubiquitous class of natural chemicals found in plants, have been widely used in the prevention and treatment of IBD. However, their therapeutic efficacy is unsatisfactory due to poor solubility, instability, rapid metabolism, and rapid systemic elimination. With the development of nanomedicine, nanocarriers can efficiently encapsulate various flavonoids and subsequently form nanoparticles (NPs), which greatly improves the stability and bioavailability of flavonoids. Recently, progress has also been made in the methodology of biodegradable polymers that can be used to fabricate NPs. As a result, NPs can significantly enhance the preventive or therapeutic effects of flavonoids on IBD. In this review, we aim to evaluate the therapeutic effect of flavonoid NPs on IBD. Furthermore, we discuss possible challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract
Cedryl acetate (CA), also called acetyl cedrene, is approved by the FDA as a flavoring or adjuvant to be added to foods. In this study, we aimed to investigate the preventive benefits of CA on obesity and obesity-related metabolic syndrome caused by a high-fat diet (HFD). Three groups of C57BL/6J mice (ten-week-old) were fed Chow, an HFD, or an HFD with CA supplementation (100 mg/kg) for 19 weeks. We observed that CA supplementation significantly reduced weight gain induced by an HFD, decreased the weight of the visceral fat pads, and prevented adipocyte hypertrophy in mice. Moreover, mice in the CA group showed significant improvements in hepatic lipid accumulation, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and gluconeogenesis compared with the mice in the HFD group. Since 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the gut microbiota in the CA and HFD groups were of similar compositions at the phylum and family levels, CA may have limited effects on gut microbiota in HFD-fed mice. The beneficial effects on the metabolic parameters of CA were reflected by CA's regulation of metabolism-related gene expression in the liver (including Pepck, G6Pase, and Fbp1) and the epididymal white adipose tissues (including PPARγ, C/EBPα, FABP4, FAS, Cytc, PGC-1α, PRDM16, Cidea, and COX4) of the mice. In summary, a potent preventive effect of CA on HFD-induced obesity and related metabolic syndrome was highlighted by our results, and CA could be a promising dietary component for obesity intervention.

Abstract
Introduction Flavonoids have antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. They have high market value and are widely used in food and medicine fields. They also can regulate gut microbiota and promote human health. However, only a few flavonoids have been reported for their regulatory effects on human gut microbiota. Methods The effects of hesperidin, hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, hesperetin, naringin, prunin, naringenin, rutin, isoquercitrin, and quercetin on gut microbiota structural and metabolic differences in healthy subjects were studied by means of in vitro simulated fermentation technology. Results Results showed that the nine kinds of flavonoids mentioned above, especially hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, prunin, and isoquercitrin, were found to have more effect on the structure of human gut microbiota, and they could significantly enhance Bifidobacterium (p < 0.05). After 24 h of in vitro simulated fermentation, the relative abundance of intestinal probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus) was increased by the three flavonoids and rutin. Furthermore, the relative abundance of potential pathogenic bacteria was decreased by the addition of hesperetin-7-O-glucoside, naringin, prunin, rutin, and isoquercitrin (e.g., Lachnoclostridium and Bilophila). Notably, prunin could also markedly decrease the content of H2S, NH3, and short-chain fatty acids. This performance fully demonstrated its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Discussion This study demonstrates that flavonoids can regulate the imbalance of gut microbiota, and some differences in the regulatory effect are observed due to different structures. This work provides a theoretical basis for the wide application of flavonoids for food and medicine.

Abstract
In recent years, attention has focused on the roles of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables in maintaining and improving the intestinal environment and preventing metabolic syndrome. A high-fat and high-sugar diet, lack of exercise, and excess energy accumulation in the body can cause metabolic syndrome and induce obesity, diabetes, and disorders of the circulatory system and liver. Therefore, the prevention of metabolic syndrome is important. The current review shows that the simultaneous intake of phytochemicals contained in citruses and grapes together with vitamin D improves the state of gut microbiota and immunity, preventing metabolic syndrome and related diseases. Phytochemicals contained in citruses include polyphenols such as hesperidin, rutin, and naringin; those in grapes include quercetin, procyanidin, and oleanolic acid. The intake of these phytochemicals and vitamin D, along with prebiotics and probiotics, nurture good gut microbiota. In general, Firmicutes are obese-prone gut microbiota and Bacteroidetes are lean-prone gut microbiota; good gut microbiota nurture regulatory T cells, which suppress inflammatory responses and upregulate immunity. Maintaining good gut microbiota suppresses TNF-α, an inflammatory cytokine that is also considered to be a pathogenic contributor adipokine, and prevents chronic inflammation, thereby helping to prevent metabolic syndrome. Maintaining good gut microbiota also enhances adiponectin, a protector adipokine that prevents metabolic syndrome. For the prevention of metabolic syndrome and the reduction of various disease risks, the intake of phytochemicals and vitamin D will be important for human health in the future.

Abstract
The gut microbiome plays a major role in human health, and gut microbial imbalance or dysbiosis is associated with disease development. Modulation in the gut microbiome can be used to treat or prevent different diseases. Gut dysbiosis increases with aging, and it has been associated with the impairment of gut barrier function leading to the leakage of harmful metabolites such as trimethylamine (TMA). TMA is a gut metabolite resulting from dietary amines that originate from animal-based foods. TMA enters the portal circulation and is oxidized by the hepatic enzyme into trimethylamine oxide (TMAO). Increased TMAO levels have been reported in elderly people. High TMAO levels are linked to peripheral artery disease (PAD), endothelial senescence, and vascular aging. Emerging evidence showed the beneficial role of probiotics and prebiotics in the management of several atherogenic risk factors through the remodeling of the gut microbiota, thus leading to a reduction in TMAO levels and atherosclerotic lesions. Despite the promising outcomes in different studies, the definite mechanisms of gut dysbiosis and microbiota-derived TMAO involved in atherosclerosis remain not fully understood. More studies are still required to focus on the molecular mechanisms and precise treatments targeting gut microbiota and leading to atheroprotective effects.

Abstract
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the predominant form of lung cancer and is one of the most fatal cancers worldwide. Recently, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) proposed a novel grading system based on the predominant and high-grade histological patterns for invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma (IPA). To improve outcomes for NSCLC patients, we combined serum metabolomics and fecal microbiology to screen biomarkers in patients with early-stage NSCLC and identified characteristic microbial profiles in patients with different grades of IPA. 26 genera and 123 metabolites were significantly altered in the early-stage NSCLC patients. Agathobacter, Blautia, Clostridium, and Muribaculacea were more abundant in the early-stage NSCLC patients compared with healthy controls. For the different grades of IPA, the characteristic microorganisms are as follows: Blautia and Marinobacter in IPA grade type 1; Dorea in IPA grade type 2; and Agathobacter in IPA grade type 3. In the metabolome results, the early-stage NSCLC group mainly included higher levels of sphingolipids (D-erythro-sphingosine 1-phosphate, palmitoyl sphingomyelin), fatty acyl (Avocadyne 1-acetate, 12(S)-HETE, 20-Carboxy-Leukotriene B4, Thromboxane B3, 6-Keto-prostaglandin f1alpha, Sebacic acid, Tetradecanedioic acid) and glycerophospholipids (LPC 20:2, LPC 18:0, LPC 18:4, LPE 20:2, LPC 20:1, LPC 16:1, LPC 20:0, LPA 18:2, LPC 17:1, LPC 17:2, LPC 19:0). Dysregulation of pathways, such as sphingolipid metabolism and sphingolipid signaling pathway may become an emerging therapeutic strategy for early-NSCLC. Correlation analysis showed that gut microbiota and serum metabolic profiles were closely related, while Muribaculacea and Clostridium were the core genera. These findings provide new biomarkers for the diagnosis of early-stage NSCLC and the precise grading assessment of prognostic-related IPAs, which are of clinical importance and warrant further investigation of the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
Dysbiosis of gut microbiota plays a fundamental role in the pathogenesis and development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its complications. Natural products from plants and microorganisms can achieve recognizable improvement in renal function and serve as an alternative treatment for chronic kidney disease patients with a long history, yet less is known on its beneficial effects on kidney injury by targeting the intestinal microbiota. In this review, we summarize studies on the effects of natural products from plants and microorganisms, including herbal medicines and their bioactive extracts, polysaccharides from plants and microorganisms, and phytochemicals, on the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease through targeting gut microflora. We describe the strategies of these anti-CKD effects in animal experiments including remodulation of gut microbiota structure, reduction of uremic toxins, enhancement of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, regulation of intestinal inflammatory signaling, and improvement in intestinal integrity. Meanwhile, the clinical trials of different natural products in chronic kidney disease clinical practice were also analyzed and discussed. These provide information to enable a better understanding of the renoprotective effects of these effective natural products from plants and microorganisms in the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Finally, we propose the steps to prove the causal role of the intestinal microflora in the treatment of chronic kidney disease by natural products from plants and microorganisms. We also assess the future perspective that natural active products from plants and microorganisms can beneficially delay the onset and progression of kidney disease by targeting the gut flora and highlight the remaining challenges in this area. With the continuous deepening of studies in recent years, it has been proved that gut microbiota is a potential target of natural active products derived from plants and microorganisms for chronic kidney disease treatment. Fully understanding the functions and mechanisms of gut microbiota in these natural active products from plants and microorganisms is conducive to their application as an alternative therapeutic in the treatment of chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
Arterial hypertension is a chronic disease which is very prevalent contemporarily. The aim of this review was to investigate the impact of gut microbiota on the development and potential treatment of hypertension, taking into consideration underlying molecular mechanisms. The bacteria present in the intestines have the ability to secrete different metabolites, which might play a significant role in the regulation of blood pressure. The most important include short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), vasoactive hormones, trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and uremic toxins, such as indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresyl sulfate (PCS). Their action in regulating blood pressure is mainly based on their pro- or anti-inflammatory function. The use of specifically formulated probiotics to modify the composition of gut microbiota might be a beneficial way of supportive treatment of hypertension; however, further research on this topic is needed to choose the species of bacteria that could induce the hypotensive pattern.

Abstract
Although a general healthy gut microbiota cannot be defined due to numerous internal and external individual factors, such as sex, age, ethnicity, genetics, environment, diet and drugs affect its composition, certain microbial species and gut microbiota compositions seem to be related to the progression of insulin resistance to type 2 diabetes, as well as the development of microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes. The present review aimed at gathering the reported information describing how resveratrol induced changes in microbiota composition can mediate the positive effects of this polyphenol on glucose homeostasis under type 2 diabetic conditions, both in animals and humans. Based on the fact that some changes observed in the gut microbiota of type 2 diabetic animals and patients are reversed by resveratrol treatment, and taking into account that some resveratrol mediated changes in gut microbiota composition are similar to those induced by anti-diabetic drugs such as metformin, it can be proposed that four genera, Alistipes, Allobaculum, Desulfovibrio and Blautia could be involved in the benefits of resveratrol on glycameic control. Nevertheless some limitations are observed in this research field: (a) the number of studies analyzing both the effects of resveratrol on glucose homeostasis and microbiota composition in the same cohort of animals, in order to know the potential involvement of microbiota in the anti-diabetic effects of this phenolic compound, are very scarce and practically inexistent in the case of humans., (b) the studies present inconsistencies concerning the effects of resveratrol on gut microbiota changes, (c) the experimental design used do not allow the researchers to establish a causal relationship between the changes in microbiota and the anti-diabetic effect, in the vast majority of the studies, (d) the knowledge about the role of each type of bacteria on glycaemic control is not sufficient so far.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a bioactive polyphenolic compound mainly present in grapes and red wine. It is known to exert beneficial effects in various experimental settings, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and immunoregulatory. Accumulating evidence suggests these health benefits might be, at least partially, attributed to resveratrol's role in protecting the intestinal barrier, regulating the gut microbiome, and inhibiting intestinal inflammation. The purpose of this review is to examine the bioactivities of resveratrol in disease prevention and health promotion from the standpoint of regulating the gut microbiome. The article aims to provide additional insight into the potential applications of resveratrol in the food and nutraceutical industry.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila is a mucosal symbiont considered a gut microbial marker in healthy individuals, as its relative abundance is significantly reduced in subjects with gut inflammation and metabolic disturbances. Dietary polyphenols can distinctly stimulate the relative abundance of A. muciniphila, contributing to the attenuation of several diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, and liver damage. However, mechanistic insight into how polyphenols stimulate A. muciniphila or its activity is limited. This review focuses on dietary interventions in rodents and humans and in vitro studies using different phenolic classes. We provide critical insights with respect to potential mechanisms explaining the effects of polyphenols affecting A. muciniphila. Anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, flavonols, flavanones, stilbenes, and phenolic acids are shown to increase relative A. muciniphila levels in vivo, whereas lignans exert the opposite effect. Clinical trials show consistent findings, and high intervariability relying on the gut microbiota composition at the baseline and the presence of multiple polyphenol degraders appear to be cardinal determinants in inducing A. muciniphila and associated benefits by polyphenol intake. Polyphenols signal to the AhR receptor and impact the relative abundance of A. muciniphila in a direct and indirect fashion, resulting in the restoration of intestinal epithelial integrity and homeostatic crosstalk with the gut microbiota by affecting IL-22 production. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that A. muciniphila participates in the initial hydrolysis of some polyphenols but does not participate in their complete metabolism. In conclusion, the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods targeting A. muciniphila as a pivotal intermediary represents a promising precision nutritional therapy to prevent and attenuate metabolic and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit vinegar (RFV) on the intervention of obesity and hyperlipidemia and its potential mechanism, a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity model in mice was established and gavaged with RFV, saline and xuezhikang for 30 consecutive days, respectively. The results showed that RFV supplementation significantly reduced fat accumulation, and improved dyslipidemia and liver inflammation in HFD mice. RFV intervention for 30 days significantly improved the diversity of gut microbiota and altered the structure of gut microbiota in HFD mice. Compared with the model group (MC), the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes at least decreased by 15.75% after RFV treatment, and increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Lactobacillaceae, Bacteroides, Akkermansia,) and decreased the relative abundance of harmful bacteria (Ruminococcaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, Ruminococcaceae _UCG-013, Lachnospiraceae, Allobaculum, Actinobacteria). Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that Erysipelotrichaceae, Allobaculum, Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-013, uncultured_bacterium_f_Lachnospiraceae and Desulfobacterota were positively correlated (p < 0.05) with the body weight of mice, while Proteobacteria was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with the body weight of mice. The two main bacteria that could promote dyslipidemia in obese mice were Actinobacteria and Firmicutes, while those that played a mitigating role were mainly Bacteroidetes. It is concluded that RFV plays an important role in the intervention of obesity and related complications in HFD mice by regulating their gut microbiota.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common obstetric complications due to an increased level of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM increases due to the obesity epidemic. GDM is also associated with an increased risk of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia resulting in elevated maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Diet is one of the most important environmental factors associated with etiology of GDM. Studies have shown that the consumption of certain bioactive diets and nutrients before and during pregnancy might have preventive effects against GDM leading to a healthy pregnancy outcome as well as beneficial metabolic outcomes later in the offspring's life. Gut microbiome as a biological ecosystem bridges the gap between human health and diseases through diets. Maternal diets affect maternal and fetal gut microbiome and metabolomics profiles, which consequently regulate the host epigenome, thus contributing to later-life metabolic health in both mother and offspring. This review discusses the current knowledge regarding how epigenetic mechanisms mediate the interaction between maternal bioactive diets, the gut microbiome and the metabolome leading to improved metabolic health in both mother and offspring.

Abstract
The plant-based nutraceuticals are receiving increasing interest in recent time. The high attraction to the phytochemicals is associated with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which can lead to reduced risk of the development of cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases. One of the most disseminated groups of plant bioactives are phenolic compounds. It was recently hypothesized that phenolic compounds can have the ability to improve the functioning of the gut barrier. The available studies showed that one of the polyphenols, resveratrol, has great potential to improve the integrity of the gut barrier. Very promising results have been obtained with in vitro and animal models. Still, more clinical trials must be performed to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on the gut barrier, especially in individuals with increased intestinal permeability. Moreover, the interplay between phenolic compounds, intestinal microbiota and gut barrier should be carefully evaluated in the future. Therefore, this review offers an overview of the current knowledge about the interaction between polyphenols with a special emphasis on resveratrol and the gut barrier, summarizes the available methods to evaluate the intestinal permeability, discusses the current research gaps and proposes the directions for future studies in this research area.

Abstract
High-fat diet-induced obesity is characterized by low-grade inflammation, which has been linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis. We hypothesized that quercetin supplementation would alter gut microbiota and reduce inflammation in obese mice. Male C57BL/6J mice, 4 weeks of age, were divided into 3 groups, including a low-fat diet group, a high-fat diet (HFD) group, and a high-fat diet plus quercetin (HFD+Q) group. The mice in HFD+Q group were given 50 mg per kg BW quercetin by gavage for 20 weeks. The body weight, fat accumulation, gut barrier function, glucose tolerance, and adipose tissue inflammation were determined in mice. 16 s rRNA amplicon sequence and non-targeted metabolomics analysis were used to explore the alteration of gut microbiota and metabolites. We found that quercetin significantly alleviated HFD-induced obesity, improved glucose tolerance, recovered gut barrier function, and reduced adipose tissue inflammation. Moreover, quercetin ameliorated HFD-induced gut microbiota disorder by regulating the abundance of gut microbiota, such as Adlercreutzia, Allobaculum, Coprococcus_1, Lactococcus, and Akkermansia. Quercetin influenced the production of metabolites that were linked to alterations in obesity-related inflammation and oxidative stress, such as Glycerophospho-N-palmitoyl ethanolamine, sanguisorbic acid dilactone, O-Phospho-L-serine, and P-benzoquinone. Our results demonstrate that the anti-obesity effects of quercetin may be mediated through regulation in gut microbiota and metabolites.

Abstract
Fatigue seriously affects people's work efficiency and quality of life and has become a common health problem in modern societies around the world. The pathophysiology of fatigue is complex and not fully clear. To some degree, interactions between gut microbiota and host may be the cause of fatigue progression. Polyphenols such as tannin, tea polyphenols, curcumin, and soybean isoflavones relieve fatigue significantly. Studies have shown that the gut microbiota is able to convert these active compounds into more active metabolites through intestinal fermentation. However, the mechanism of anti-fatigue polyphenols is currently mainly analyzed from the perspective of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and changes in gut microbiota are rarely considered. This review focuses on gut microecology and systematically summarizes the latest theoretical and research findings on the interaction of gut microbiota, fatigue, and polyphenols. First, we outline the relationship between gut microbiota and fatigue, including changes in the gut microbiota during fatigue and how they interact with the host. Next, we describe the interactions between the gut microbiota and polyphenols in fatigue treatment (regulation of the gut microbiota by polyphenols and metabolism of polyphenols by the gut microbiota), and how the importance of potential active metabolites (such as urolithin) produced by the decomposition of polyphenols by gut microbiota is emerging. Based on the new perspective of gut microbiota, this review provides interesting insights into the mechanism of polyphenols in fatigue treatment and clarifies the potential of polyphenols as targets for anti-fatigue product development, aiming to provide a useful basis for further research and design.

Abstract
The human body is made up of 10¹⁴ human cells and 10¹⁵ bacterial cells, forming a combined structure that is described as a "superorganism". Commensal, symbiotic, and pathogenic microorganisms in the human body, many of which are located inside the intestine, affect health conditions and diseases. An important factor contributing to the development of chronic diseases is dysbiosis, which occurs when the number of pathogenic microorganisms increases. Dysbiosis is associated with increased intestinal permeability, endotoxemia (increased LPS), pro-inflammatory cytokine release, energy harvest, and adiposity, thus being involved in the pathogenesis of disorders like diabetes and obesity. Nutritional habits are the most important environmental factor that affects intestinal microbial composition. A dietary pattern that was proven successful in regulating gut microbiota is the renowned Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by high plant-based foods consumption, moderate fish and dairy products consumption, and low red meat consumption. There is an inverse relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes. In addition to the direct effects of the Mediterranean diet on the pathogenesis of these diseases, it can also be effective in preventing these diseases due to its effects on the intestinal microbiota. It is noted that the number of Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides increases the longer one's eating habit adhere to the Mediterranean diet, and the number of Firmicutes decreases, accordingly, thus supporting the symbiotic distribution in the intestinal microbiota.
