Periodate oxidation-mediated nanocelluloses: Preparation, functionalization, structural design, and applications

In recent years, the remarkable progress in nanotechnology has ignited considerable interest in investigating nanocelluloses, an environmentally friendly and sustainable nanomaterial derived from cellulosic feedstocks. Current research primarily focuses on the preparation and applications of nanocelluloses. However, to enhance the efficiency of nanofibrillation, reduce energy consumption, and expand nanocellulose applications, chemical pre-treatments of cellulose fibers have attracted substantial interest and extensive exploration. Various chemical pre-treatment methods yield nanocelluloses with diverse functional groups. Among these methods, periodate oxidation has garnered significant attention recently, due to the formation of dialdehyde cellulose derived nanocellulose, which exhibits great promise for further modification with various functional groups. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive and in-depth examination of periodate oxidation-mediated nanocelluloses (PONCs), including their preparation, functionalization, hierarchical structural design, and applications. We believe that PONCs stand as highly promising candidates for the development of novel nano-cellulosic materials.

3D printing of bacterial cellulose for potential wound healing applications: Current trends and prospects

Several advances in skin tissue engineering have been made to restore skin damage, facilitating wound healing. Bacterial cellulose (BC), a naturally occurring polymer, has gained attention as a potential material in wound healing due to its unique physical and biological properties. In recent years, with the advent of 3D bio-printing technology, new avenues have opened for fabricating customized wound dressings and scaffolds for tissue engineering purposes. The existing literature in this field mainly focuses on the ways of modifications of bacterial cellulose to make it printable. Still, the applicability of 3D printed scaffolds for wound healing needs to be explored more. This review article focuses on the current research on using 3D-printed BC for skin regeneration, including its production methods and physical and biological properties, making it a better choice than traditional dressings. Furthermore, it also highlights the limitations and future directions for using BC in wound healing and tissue engineering applications. This review provides a comprehensive and up-to-date exploration of the applications of 3D-printed BC in wound healing, drawing insights from pre-existing studies and emphasizing patient compliance, clinical outcomes, and economic viability.

Investigate the in vitro biocompatibility, biodegradation, cytotoxicity, and differentiation potential of 3-D gelatin-nanocellulose composite scaffolds loaded with nanohydroxyapatite and simvastatin

Bone tissue engineering has been proposed as a promising solution for healing of bone fractures. An important aspect of bone tissue engineering is the implantable scaffolds that participate in the regeneration and repair of bone tissue. In this study, the composite scaffolds of gelatin- nanocellulose loaded with nanohydroxyapatite and simvastatin (as the osteoinductive component) were fabricated using freeze- drying method. Scaffolds were characterized in terms of morphology, mechanical, biodegradability, water absorption capacity, and simvastatin release characteristics. Also, the biocompatibility and differentiation potential of the scaffolds were evaluated on human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells using the MTT assay and alizarin red staining, respectively. The simvastatin loaded scaffolds showed a sustained release profile in vitro up to 216 h. The results of BMSCs differentiation by alizarin red staining showed significant differences between the simvastatin loaded group and other groups. Moreover, the results of MTT assay verified cytocompatibility and non-toxicity of the scaffolds. Therefore, the gelatin-nano cellulose composite scaffolds loaded with hydroxyapatite and simvastatin may be considered promising for use in bone tissue engineering.

Synthesis, functionalization, and commercial application of cellulose-based nanomaterials

This review explores the latest developments in cellulose-based nanomaterial synthesis, functionalization, and commercial applications. Beginning with an overview of the diverse sources of cellulose and the methods employed for its isolation and purification, the review delves into the various techniques used for the synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), highlighting their unique properties and potential applications. Furthermore, the functionalization strategies employed to enhance the properties and tailor the functionalities of cellulose-based nanomaterials were discussed. The review also provides insights into the emerging commercial applications of cellulose-based nanomaterials across diverse sectors, including packaging, biomedical engineering, textiles, and environmental remediation. Finally, challenges and prospects for the widespread adoption of cellulose-based nanomaterials are outlined, emphasizing the need for further research and development to unlock their full potential in sustainable and innovative applications.

Nanocellulose-based hydrogels as versatile materials with interesting functional properties for tissue engineering applications

Tissue engineering has emerged as a remarkable field aiming to restore or replace damaged tissues through the use of biomimetic constructs. Among the diverse materials investigated for this purpose, nanocellulose-based hydrogels have garnered attention due to their intriguing biocompatibility, tunable mechanical properties, and sustainability. Over the past few years, numerous research works have been published focusing on the successful use of nanocellulose-based hydrogels as artificial extracellular matrices for regenerating various types of tissues. The review emphasizes the importance of tissue engineering, highlighting hydrogels as biomimetic scaffolds, and specifically focuses on the role of nanocellulose in composites that mimic the structures, properties, and functions of the native extracellular matrix for regenerating damaged tissues. It also summarizes the types of nanocellulose, as well as their structural, mechanical, and biological properties, and their contributions to enhancing the properties and characteristics of functional hydrogels for tissue engineering of skin, bone, cartilage, heart, nerves and blood vessels. Additionally, recent advancements in the application of nanocellulose-based hydrogels for tissue engineering have been evaluated and documented. The review also addresses the challenges encountered in their fabrication while exploring the potential future prospects of these hydrogel matrices for biomedical applications.

Preparation of nanocellulose/reduced graphene oxide matrix loaded with cuprous oxide nanoparticles for efficient catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

The paper reports on the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals/reduced graphene oxide matrix loaded with cuprous oxide nanoparticles (CNC/rGO-Cu2O) through a simple solvothermal method and its application for 4-nitrophenol reduction to 4-aminophenol using sodium borohydride. The CNC/rGO-Cu2O nanocomposite was formed chemically by first mixing CNC and graphene oxide (GO) followed by complexation of the negatively charged functional groups of CNC/GO with Cu2+ ions and subsequent heating at 100°C. This resulted in the simultaneous reduction of GO to rGO and the formation of Cu2O nanoparticles. The as-elaborated nanocomposite was firstly characterized using different techniques such as atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Then, it was successfully applied for efficient catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol using sodium borohydride: the reduction was completed in about 6 min. After eight times use, the catalyst still maintained good catalytic performance. Compared to CNC/rGO, rGO/Cu2O and free Cu2O nanoparticles, the CNC/rGO-Cu2O nanocomposite exhibits higher catalytic activity even at lower copper loading.

Deep Learning Insights into the Dynamic Effects of Photodynamic Therapy on Cancer Cells

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) shows promise in tumor treatment, particularly when combined with nanotechnology. This study examines the impact of deep learning, particularly the Cellpose algorithm, on the comprehension of cancer cell responses to PDT. The Cellpose algorithm enables robust morphological analysis of cancer cells, while logistic growth modelling predicts cellular behavior post-PDT. Rigorous model validation ensures the accuracy of the findings. Cellpose demonstrates significant morphological changes after PDT, affecting cellular proliferation and survival. The reliability of the findings is confirmed by model validation. This deep learning tool enhances our understanding of cancer cell dynamics after PDT. Advanced analytical techniques, such as morphological analysis and growth modeling, provide insights into the effects of PDT on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, which could potentially improve cancer treatment efficacy. In summary, the research examines the role of deep learning in optimizing PDT parameters to personalize oncology treatment and improve efficacy.

Nanocellulose-Based Hybrid Scaffolds for Skin and Bone Tissue Engineering: A 10-Year Overview

Cellulose, the most abundant polymer on Earth, has been widely utilized in its nanoform due to its excellent properties, finding applications across various scientific fields. As the demand for nanocellulose continues to rise and its ease of use becomes apparent, there has been a significant increase in research publications centered on this biomaterial. Nanocellulose, in its different forms, has shown tremendous promise as a tissue engineered scaffold for regeneration and repair. Particularly, nanocellulose-based composites and scaffolds have emerged as highly demanding materials for both soft and hard tissue engineering. Medical practitioners have traditionally relied on collagen and its analogue, gelatin, for treating tissue damage. However, the limited mechanical strength of these biopolymers restricts their direct use in various applications. This issue can be overcome by making hybrids of these biopolymers with nanocellulose. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the recent and most relevant publications focusing on hybrid composites of collagen and gelatin with a specific emphasis on their combination with nanocellulose. While bone and skin tissue engineering represents two areas where a majority of researchers are concentrating their efforts, this review highlights the use of nanocellulose-based hybrids in these contexts.

Unlocking sustainable solutions: Nanocellulose innovations for enhancing the shelf life of fruits and vegetables - A comprehensive review

As a result of these merits, it is a good option for reducing food spoilage factors such as oxidation, desiccation, and microbiological contamination. Nanocellulose not only enhances food preservation but also complies with industry-wide environmental objectives. This review explores the many facets of nanocellulose technology, from its essential characteristics to its use in the preservation of fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, it deals with vital issues including scalability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory constraints. While the use of nanocellulose in food preservation offers fascinating potential, it also wants to be cautiously careful to assure affordability, effectiveness, and safety. To fully use the potential of nanocellulose and advance the sustainability plan in the food business, collaboration between scientists, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders is important as we stand on the cusp of a revolutionary era in food preservation.

Exploring Novel Applications for Hydrogels Derived from Modified Celluloses

The valorization of lignocellulosic biomass by-products holds significant economic and ecological potential, considering their global overproduction. This paper introduces the fabrication of a novel wheat-straw-based hydrogel and a new microcellulose-based hydrogel through 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) oxidation. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis was employed for the detection of carboxyl groups, neutralization titration was conducted using a conductivity meter, viscosity analysis was performed using a rheometer, and transmittance analysis was carried out using a spectrophotometer. Two novel hydrogels based on TEMPO oxidation have been developed. Among them, the bio-based hydrogel derived from oxidized wheat straw exhibited exceptional printability and injectability. We found that the oxidation degree of microcellulose reached 56-69%, and the oxidation degree of wheat straw reached 56-63%. The cross-linking of 4% oxidized wheat straw and calcium chloride was completed in 400 seconds, and the viscosity exceeded 100,000 Pa·s. In summary, we have successfully created low-cost hydrogels through the modification of wheat straw and microcellulose, transforming lignocellulosic biomass by-products into a sustainable source of polymers. This paper verifies the future applicability of biomass materials in 3D printing.

A flavonol-labelled cellulose fluorescent probe combined with composite fluorescent film imaging and smartphone technology for the detection of Fe3

Fe3+ is one of the most widely distributed and abundant elements on earth. Realizing efficient and real-time monitoring of Fe3+ is of great significance for the natural environment and the health of living organisms. In this paper, a flavonol-labelled cellulose-based fluorescent probe (ACHM) was synthesized by using dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) as the backbone and combining with flavonol derivatives (AHM - 1). The mechanism of recognizing Fe3+ was verified by characterizing the structure of ACHM by NMR, HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometry), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TG (Thermogravimetry) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The H2O solution of the probe ACHM showed good fluorescence properties. It has quenching fluorescence properties for Fe3+, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.10 μM and a fast response time of only 20 s. In addition, in order to expand the application range of the probe, ACHM was prepared as a fluorescent composite film with an average tensile strength of 32.9 MPa and an average elongation at break of 3.39 %. It shows its superiority in mechanical properties. The probe also demonstrated its practical application value for detecting Fe3+ in smartphone imaging applications.

Advanced Drug Carriers: A Review of Selected Protein, Polysaccharide, and Lipid Drug Delivery Platforms

Studies on bionanocomposite drug carriers are a key area in the field of active substance delivery, introducing innovative approaches to improve drug therapy. Such drug carriers play a crucial role in enhancing the bioavailability of active substances, affecting therapy efficiency and precision. The targeted delivery of drugs to the targeted sites of action and minimization of toxicity to the body is becoming possible through the use of these advanced carriers. Recent research has focused on bionanocomposite structures based on biopolymers, including lipids, polysaccharides, and proteins. This review paper is focused on the description of lipid-containing nanocomposite carriers (including liposomes, lipid emulsions, lipid nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers), polysaccharide-containing nanocomposite carriers (including alginate and cellulose), and protein-containing nanocomposite carriers (e.g., gelatin and albumin). It was demonstrated in many investigations that such carriers show the ability to load therapeutic substances efficiently and precisely control drug release. They also demonstrated desirable biocompatibility, which is a promising sign for their potential application in drug therapy. The development of bionanocomposite drug carriers indicates a novel approach to improving drug delivery processes, which has the potential to contribute to significant advances in the field of pharmacology, improving therapeutic efficacy while minimizing side effects.

Exploring nanocellulose frontiers: A comprehensive review of its extraction, properties, and pioneering applications in the automotive and biomedical industries

Material is an inseparable entity for humans to serve different purposes. However, synthetic polymers represent a major category of anthropogenic pollutants with detrimental impacts on natural ecosystems. This escalating environmental issue is characterized by the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic materials, which pose serious threats to the health of our planet's ecosystem. Cellulose is becoming a focal point for many researchers due to its high availability. It has been used to serve various purposes. Recent scientific advancements have unveiled innovative prospects for the utilization of nanocellulose within the area of advanced science. This comprehensive review investigates deeply into the field of nanocellulose, explaining the methodologies employed in separating nanocellulose from cellulose. It also explains upon two intricately examined applications that emphasize the pivotal role of nanocellulose in nanocomposites. The initial instance pertains to the automotive sector, encompassing cutting-edge applications in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, while the second exemplifies the use of nanocellulose in the field of biomedical applications like otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, and wound dressing. This review aims to provide comprehensive information starting from the definitions, identifying the sources of the nanocellulose and its extraction, and ending with the recent applications in the emerging field such as energy storage and biomedical applications.

Magnetically-activated, nanostructured cellulose for efficient capture of circulating tumor cells from the blood sample of head and neck cancer patients

In this report, the relative efficiency of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nanofibers (CNFs) to capture circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from the blood sample of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients was evaluated. Detection and enumeration of CTCs are critical for monitoring cancer progression. Both types of nanostructured cellulose were chemically modified with Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM) antibody and iron oxide nanoparticles. The EpCAM antibody facilitated the engagement of CTCs, promoting entrapment within the cellulose cage structure. Iron oxide nanoparticles, on the other hand, rendered the cages activatable via the use of a magnet for the capture and separation of entrapped CTCs. The efficiency of the network structures is shown in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients' blood samples. It was observed that the degree of chemical functionalization of hydroxyl groups located within the CNCs or CNFs with anti-EpCAM determined the efficiency of the system's interaction with CTCs. Further, our result indicated that inflexible scaffolds of nanocrystals interacted more efficiently with CTCs than that of the fibrous CNF scaffolds. Network structures derived from CNCs demonstrated comparable CTC capturing efficiency to commercial standard, OncoDiscover®. The output of the work will provide the chemical design principles of cellulosic materials intended for constructing affordable platforms for monitoring cancer progression in 'real time'.

Recent advances in 3D printed cellulose-based wound dressings: A review on in vitro and in vivo achievements

Chronic wounds, especially diabetic ulcers, pose a significant challenge in regenerative medicine. Cellulose derivatives offer remarkable wound management properties, such as effective absorption and retention of wound exudates, maintaining an optimal moisture environment crucial for successful chronic wound regeneration. However, conventional dressings have limited efficacy in managing and healing these types of skin lesions, driving scientists to explore innovative approaches. The emergence of 3D printing has enabled personalized dressings that meet individual patient needs, improving the healing process and patient comfort. Cellulose derivatives meet the demanding requirements for biocompatibility, printability, and biofabrication necessary for 3D printing of biologically active scaffolds. However, the potential applications of nanocellulose and cellulose derivative-based inks for wound regeneration remain largely unexplored. Thus, this review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in cellulose-based inks for 3D printing of personalized wound dressings. The composition and biofabrication approaches of cellulose-based wound dressings are thoroughly discussed, including the functionalization with bioactive molecules and antibiotics for improved wound regeneration. Similarly, the in vitro and in vivo performance of these dressings is extensively examined. In summary, this review aims to highlight the exceptional advantages and diverse applications of 3D printed cellulose-based dressings in personalized wound care.

Effect of Glycerol Concentrations on the Characteristics of Cellulose Films from Cattail (Typha angustifolia L.) Flowers

Plastic waste has become a big problem for the environment globally. Biodegradable polymers are a potential replacement for plastics that can have a positive outcome both environmentally and economically. In this work, we used acid hydrolysis and alkaline treatment to extract cellulose fibers from cattails. The obtained cellulose was used as a substrate for the fabrication of cellulose film using a casting technique on plastic plates. Different concentrations of the plasticizer, glycerol, were used to prepare films for comparison, and its effects on the film's characteristics were observed. The morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability of the cattail cellulose (CTC) films were studied using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Measurements of transparency, moisture content (MC), water solubility (MS), and water contact angle (WCA) were also performed. Introducing glycerol into the films increased the transparency, MC, and WS values, as well as the gap width between film textures. However, it resulted in a decrease in the WCA of the films, showing that the hydrophilicity of the films is increased by the addition of glycerol. The interaction between the functional groups of cellulose and glycerol was established from the ATR-FTIR and XRD data. The obtained results indicated that glycerol affected the thermal stability and the degree of crystallinity of the produced films. Accordingly, the hydrophilicity of the cellulose film was increased by increasing the glycerol content; therefore, cattail cellulose films can be used as a biodegradable alternative to plastic in the future.

Thiol-Silylated Cellulose Nanocrystals as Selective Biodepressants in Froth Flotation

The extraction of various minerals is commonly conducted through froth flotation, which is a versatile separation method in mineral processing. In froth flotation, depressants are employed to improve the flotation selectivity by modifying the wettability of the minerals and reducing their natural or induced floatability. However, the environmental impact of many current flotation chemicals poses a challenge to the sustainability and selectivity of the ore beneficiation processes. To mitigate this issue, cellulose, particularly nanocelluloses, has been explored as a potential alternative to promote sustainable mineral processing. This study focused on silylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as biodepressants for sulfide minerals in froth flotation. CNCs containing thiol silane groups or bifunctional CNCs containing both thiol and propyl silanes were synthesized using an aqueous silylation reaction, and their performance in the flotation of chalcopyrite and pyrite was investigated in the presence of a sodium isobutyl xanthate collector. The results showed that the modified CNCs exhibited preferential interaction between chalcopyrite, and the flotation recovery of chalcopyrite decreased from ∼76% to ∼24% in the presence of thiol-grafted CNCs at pH 6, while the pyrite recovery decreased only from ∼82% to ∼75%, indicating the efficient selectivity of thiol-silylated CNCs toward chalcopyrite depression.

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Self-healing polymers through hydrogen-bond cross-linking: synthesis and electronic applications

Recently, polymers capable of repeatedly self-healing physical damage and restoring mechanical properties have attracted extensive attention. Among the various supramolecular chemistry, hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) featuring reversibility, directionality and high per-volume concentration has become one of the most attractive directions for the development of self-healing polymers (SHPs). Herein, we review the recent advances in the design of high-performance SHPs based on different H-bonding types, for example, H-bonding motifs and excessive H-bonding. In particular, the effects of the structural design of SHPs on their mechanical performance and healing efficiency are discussed in detail. Moreover, we also summarize how to employ H-bonding-based SHPs for the preparation of self-healable electronic devices, focusing on promising topics, including energy harvesting devices, energy storage devices, and flexible sensing devices. Finally, the current challenges and possible strategies for the development of H-bonding-based SHPs and their smart electronic applications are highlighted.

Chemistry of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Oxidized by Two Selective Oxidants

Along with the increased usage of cellulose in the manufacture of novel materials, those of its derivatives that have good solubility in water or organic solvents have become increasingly important. In this study, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), a cellulosic derivative with distinct features, was utilized to investigate how two of the most-selective oxidation methods currently available in the literature act on the constituent OH groups of both the side chain and the anhydroglycosidic unit in HPC. The oxidation reactions were carried out first using TEMPO, sodium hypochlorite, and sodium bromide, then sodium periodate (NaIO4), for 5 h. A combination of these two protocols was applied. The amount of aldehyde and number of carboxylic groups introduced after oxidation was determined, while the changes in the morphological features of oxidized HPC were, additionally, assessed. Furthermore, utilizing Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric studies, the chemical structure, crystallinity, and thermal stability of the oxidized HPC samples were examined and compared.

Microcrystalline Cellulose Isolation and Impregnation with Sappan Wood Extracts as Antioxidant Dietary Fiber for Bread Preparation

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) has gained considerable attention as a functional ingredient in bread making. This work demonstrates the isolation of MCC from sugar cane bagasse (SCB) for preparing bread. The effect of MCC on bread attributes and antioxidant activity by impregnation with sappan wood extract (SAP) was evaluated. The highest crystallinity index and suitable size of MCC were achieved at 85 °C under 90 min hydrolysis condition. Increasing MCC/SAP levels in bread showed a significant increase in bread color with decreases in the specific volume and baking loss. There was a positive correlation between bread texture and the MCC/SAP level. The addition of MCC/SAP interfered with the bread hardness. Low MCC/SAP levels have no effect on springiness and cohesiveness; however, 4% MCC/SAP has significantly decreased these attributes, with the highest antioxidant activity and phenolic content. Therefore, MCC can be functionalized with SAP as an antioxidant fiber additive for health benefits in bakery products.

Strong Bioactive Glass-Based Hybrid Implants with Good Biomineralization Activity Used to Reduce Formation Duration and Improve Biomechanics of Bone Regeneration

Developing bioactive implants with strong mechanical properties and biomineralization activity is critical in bone repair. In this work, modified cellulose nanofiber (mCNF)-reinforced bioactive glass (BG)-polycaprolactone (PCL) hybrids (mCNF-BP) with strong biomechanics and good apatite formation ability were reported. Incorporating mCNFs shortens the forming duration of the hybrid films and enhances the biomechanical performance and in vitro apatite-formation capability. The optimized biomechanical performance of the optimal hybrid materials is produced at a relatively high mCNF content (1.0 wt%), including a considerably higher modulus of elasticity (948.65 ± 74.06 MPa). In addition, the biomineralization activity of mCNF-BP hybrids is also tailored with the increase in the mCNF contents. The mCNF-BP with 1.5 wt% and 2.0 wt% mCNFs demonstrate the best biomineralization activity after immersing in simulated body fluid for 3 days. This study suggests that mCNFs are efficient bioactive additive to reinforce BG-based hybrids' mechanical properties and biomineralization activity.

Lignocellulosic Bionanomaterials for Biosensor Applications

The rapid population growth, increasing global energy demand, climate change, and excessive use of fossil fuels have adversely affected environmental management and sustainability. Furthermore, the requirements for a safer ecology and environment have necessitated the use of renewable materials, thereby solving the problem of sustainability of resources. In this perspective, lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive natural resource because of its abundance, renewability, recyclability, and low cost. The ever-increasing developments in nanotechnology have opened up new vistas in sensor fabrication such as biosensor design for electronics, communication, automobile, optical products, packaging, textile, biomedical, and tissue engineering. Due to their outstanding properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, improved electrical and thermal conductivity, high physical and mechanical properties, high surface area and catalytic activity, lignocellulosic bionanomaterials including nanocellulose and nanolignin emerge as very promising raw materials to be used in the development of high-impact biosensors. In this article, the use of lignocellulosic bionanomaterials in biosensor applications is reviewed and major challenges and opportunities are identified.

A smart gating nanocellulose membrane showing selective separation and self-cleaning performance

A smart gating membrane based on thermal-sensitive poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM)-grafted nanocellulose and carbon nanotube (CNT) was prepared. The presence of PNIPAM shell on cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) endow the composite membrane with thermal responsiveness. By external stimulation, an increase temperature from 10 °C to 70 °C allows the average pore size of the membrane to be controlled from 28 nm to 110 nm, as well as the water permeance from 440 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1 to 1088 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1. The gating ratio of the membrane can reach 2.47. The photothermal effect of CNT rapidly warms up the membrane to the lowest critical solution temperature in the water, avoiding the constraint that the whole water phase cannot be heated throughout the practical use process. The membrane can precisely control the nanoparticles to concentrate at 25.3 nm, 47.7 nm or 102 nm by adjust the temperature. In addition, the water permeance can be restored to 370 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1 by washing the membrane under light. The smart gating membrane has a wide application in substance multi-stage separation and selective separation, and it can realize self-cleaning.

Prussian blue composite microswimmer based on alginate-chitosan for biofilm removal

Bacterial infections pose a serious threat to public health, causing worldwide morbidity and about 80 % of bacterial infections are related to biofilm. Removing biofilm without antibiotics remains an interdisciplinary challenge. To solve this problem, we presented a dual-power driven antibiofilm system Prussian blue composite microswimmers based on alginate-chitosan, which designed into an asymmetric structure to achieve self-driven in the fuel solution and magnetic field. Prussian blue embedded in the microswimmers given it the ability to convert light and heat, catalyze Fenton reaction, and produce bubbles and reactive oxygen species. Moreover, with the addition of Fe₃O₄, the microswimmers could move in group under external magnetic field. The composite microswimmers displayed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus biofilm with an efficiency as high as 86.94 %. It is worth mentioning that the microswimmers were fabricated with device-simple and low-cost gas-shearing method. This system integrating physical destruction, chemical damage such chemodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy, and finally kill the plankton bacteria embedded in biofilm. This approach may cause an autonomous, multifunctional antibiofilm platform to promote the present most areas with harmful biofilm difficult to locate the surface for removal.

Challenges associated with cellulose composite material: Facet engineering and prospective

Cellulose is the most abundant polysaccharide on earth. It has a large number of desirable properties. Its low toxicity makes it more useful for a variety of applications. Nowadays, its composites are used in most engineering fields. Composite consists of a polymer matrix and use as a reinforcing material. By reducing the cost of traditional fibers, it has an increasing demand for environment-friendly purposes. The use of these types of composites is inherent in moisture absorption with hindered natural fibers. This determines the reduction of polymer composite material. By appropriate chemical surface treatment of cellulose composite materials, the effect could be diminished. The most modern and advanced techniques and methods for the preparation of cellulose and polymer composites are discussed here. Cellulosic composites show a reinforcing effect on the polymer matrix as pointed out by mechanical characterization. Researchers tried their hard work to study different ways of converting various agricultural by-products into useful eco-friendly polymer composites for sustainable production. Cellulose plays building blocks, that are critical for polymer products and their engineering applications. The most common method used to prepare composites is in-situ polymerization. This help to increase the yields of cellulosic composites with a significant enhancement in thermal stability and mechanical properties. Recently, cellulose composites used as enhancing the incorporation of inorganic materials in multi-functional properties. Furthermore, we have summarized in this review the potential applications of cellulose composites in different fields like packaging, aerogels, hydrogels, and fibers.

New insights from nanotechnology in SARS-CoV-2 detection, treatment strategy, and prevention

The recent outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 resulted into the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, which has made a profound impact on mankind and the world health care system. SARS-CoV-2 is mainly transmitted within the population via symptomatic carriers, enters the host cell via ACE2 and TMPSSR2 receptors and damages the organs. The standard diagnostic tests and treatment methods implemented lack required efficiency to beat SARS-CoV-2 in the race of its spreading. The most prominently used diagnostic test,reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (a nucleic acid-based method), has limitations including a prolonged time taken to reveal results, limited sensitivity, a high rate of false negative results, and lacking specificity due to a homology with other viruses. Furthermore, as part of the treatment, antiviral drugs such as remdesivir, favipiravir, lopinavir/ritonavir, chloroquine, daclatasvir, atazanavir, and many more have been tested clinically to check their potency for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 but none of these antiviral drugs are the definitive cure or suitable prophylaxis. Thus, it is always required to combat SARS-CoV-2 spread and infection for a better and precise prognosis. This review answers the above mentioned challenges by employing nanomedicine for the development of improved detection, treatment, and prevention strategies for SARS-CoV-2. In this review, nanotechnology-based detection methods such as colorimetric assays, photothermal biosensors, molecularly imprinted nanoparticles sensors, electrochemical nanoimmunosensors, aptamer-based biosensors have been discussed. Furthermore, nanotechnology-based treatment strategies involving polymeric nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, and nanocarrier-based antiviral siRNA delivery have been depicted. Moreover, SARS-CoV-2 prevention strategies, which include the nanotechnology for upgrading personal protective equipment, facemasks, ocular protection gears, and nanopolymer-based disinfectants, have been also reviewed. This review will provide a one-site informative platform for researchers to explore the crucial role of nanomedicine in managing the COVID-19 curse more effectively.

A novel coumarin derivative-modified cellulose fluorescent probe for selective and sensitive detection of CN- in food samples

In this work, a novel coumarin derivative-modified cellulose acetate (DCB-CA) was synthesized as a fluorescent probe for highly selective and sensitive determination of CN^- in food samples. The DCB-CA was synthesized by using CA as a skeleton, and the coumarin derivative as the fluorophore. The DCB-CA obtained was characterized by different methods including FTIR, SEM, ¹H-NMR, TGA and UV-vis spectroscopy. The DCB-CA exhibited a significant "turn-off" fluorescence response to CN^-, accompanied by a distinct fluorescence color change from bright yellow to colorless. The detection limit of CN^- using DCB-CA was calculated to be 5.8 × 10^-7 M, which was much lower than the threshold limit of CN^- recommended by the World Health Organization (1.9 × 10^-6 M). Because of the favorable solubility and processability of the CA, the DCB-CA was easily processed into different fluorescent materials including fluorescent films and coatings. The fluorescent film obtained was also applied to the selective detection of CN^-. Furthermore, the DCB-CA was successfully applied to determine CN^- in food samples.

Scaffold Using Chitosan, Agarose, Cellulose, Dextran and Protein for Tissue Engineering-A Review

Biological macromolecules like polysaccharides/proteins/glycoproteins have been widely used in the field of tissue engineering due to their ability to mimic the extracellular matrix of tissue. In addition to this, these macromolecules are found to have higher biocompatibility and no/lesser toxicity when compared to synthetic polymers. In recent years, scaffolds made up of proteins, polysaccharides, or glycoproteins have been highly used due to their tensile strength, biodegradability, and flexibility. This review is about the fabrication methods and applications of scaffolds made using various biological macromolecules, including polysaccharides like chitosan, agarose, cellulose, and dextran and proteins like soy proteins, zein proteins, etc. Biopolymer-based nanocomposite production and its application and limitations are also discussed in this review. This review also emphasizes the importance of using natural polymers rather than synthetic ones for developing scaffolds, as natural polymers have unique properties, like high biocompatibility, biodegradability, accessibility, stability, absence of toxicity, and low cost.

Template-directed growth of sustainable carboxymethyl cellulose-based aerogels decorated with ZIF-67 for activation peroxymonosulfate degradation of organic dyes

A novel 3D advanced oxidation catalyst ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was successfully synthesized by facile in-situ growth of Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67). C-CMC/rGO aerogel crosslinked by poly (methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid)/polyethylene glycol system (PMVEMA/PEG) as the host material was prepared through a template-directed growth model and exhibited outstanding mechanical properties. The sustainable composite was successfully used as an efficient catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate SO₄^-· and ·OH, then leads to the removal of organic contaminants. As a result, almost 100 % of 10 ppm MB/RhB solution can be degraded within 5 min due to the combination of catalyst aerogel and PMS. What's more, the aerogel showed a wide pH tolerance range from 4 to 9 and maintained up to 93 % of the contaminant removal rate compared to the initial value after four cycles. The ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO aerogel with high load rate and excellent catalytic degradation performance not only solved the problem of dispersion and recovery of ZIF-67 particles, but also provided a new idea for the compound wastewater purification in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

An efficient tetrahydroquinazolin-2-amine derivative-grafted cellulose fluorescent probe for detection of Cu2+ and Zn2

Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ play crucial roles in many physiological processes, and their disorder will cause harm to human health. An efficient difunctional fluorescent probe CMC-GE-PQA for simultaneous detection of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ was synthesized based on carboxymethyl cellulose. The probe CMC-GE-PQA exhibited a moderate blue fluorescence color. Interestingly, this probe showed a distinct fluorescence enhancement response toward Zn²⁺, while it displayed a significant fluorescence quenching response toward Cu²⁺. The detection limits of CMC-GE-PQA for Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ were calculated as low as 5.0 × 10^-8 M and 1.0 × 10^-7 M, respectively. The detection mechanisms of CMC-GE-PQA for Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ were fully verified by Job's plot, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The probe CMC-GE-PQA was applied to determine the trace amounts of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ in environmental water samples. In addition, the probe CMC-GE-PQA-based fluorescent film and hydrogel were manufactured to achieve the portable detection of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺.

Recent Developments in Materials and Manufacturing Techniques Used for Sports Textiles

In the recent era of development, the global market for the sportswear textile manufacturing industries has increased with the increase in consumption of active sportswear. The sportswear manufacturers not only focused on the market trends but also focused on material diversification with technology enhancement. The performance characteristics of active sportswear directly influence comfort level and athletic performance during sports activities. Different types of sportswear products require different performance characteristics. Appropriate moisture and heat management are the key factors for the endowment of the required physiological comfort level. In highly engineered textile-based sports goods, special characteristics are incorporated in the polymer/fibers/product manufacturing procedures/finishing techniques to obtain the maximum performance and comfort level. In this review paper current market trends, highly engineered polymers, fibers, fabrics, finishes, nanomaterials, and the recent developments in the manufacturing techniques of sportswear are illustrated.

Preparation and research of PCL/cellulose composites: Cellulose derived from agricultural wastes

For the rational use of agricultural wastes, bagasse, orange peel and wheat bran were used to fabricate bio-based polymer materials. Cellulose was extracted from the three different agricultural wastes, and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was used as the matrix material. PCL was mixed with nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC), extracted bagasse cellulose (GC), orange peel cellulose (JC) and wheat bran cellulose (MC) by solution casting. Morphology and structure of the extracted cellulose were studied by Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier Infrared spectrometer, thermogravimetry and X-ray diffractometer. The influence of GC, JC, MC on the crystallization process and mechanical properties of PCL was investigated by DSC and tensile test. Experimental results show that the addition of CNC, GC, JC, MC increases the crystallization temperature of PCL, accelerates the crystallization process of PCL, and improves the tensile property of PCL.

An efficient ethylcellulose fluorescent probe for rapid detection of Fe3+ and its multi-functional applications

Fe³⁺ is the most abundant essential transition metal ion in the human body, plays a vital role in biological and environmental systems. Ethyl cellulose is one of the derivatives of cellulose. Herein, a novel ethylcellulose fluorescent probe EC-HPCB for detecting Fe³⁺ was prepared by grafting a flavonol derivative as both fluorophore and selective recognition group. The probe exhibited a highly specific "turn-off" fluorescence response to Fe³⁺, and the fluorescence color changed from yellow to colorless in the presence of Fe³⁺. The detection limit of EC-HPCB for Fe³⁺ was 2.65 × 10^-7 mol/L, and the response time was as quick as 2 min. The detection mechanism was confirmed by ¹H NMR and DFT calculations. Based on the good solubility and processability in organic solvent, EC-HPCB was made into coating and film with favorable fluorescent performances. Furthermore, EC-HPCB probe was successfully applied to monitor Fe³⁺ in real water samples, and the EC-HPCB-loaded filter paper provided a solid-state platform for detecting Fe³⁺ by naked eye and fluorescence method.

Chitosan enhanced the stability and antibiofilm activity of self-propelled Prussian blue micromotor

The emergence, spread and difficult removal of bacteria biofilm, represent an ever-increasing persistent infections and medical complications challenge worldwide. Herein, a self-propelled system Prussian blue micromotor (PB MMs) were constructed by gas-shearing technology for efficient degradation of biofilms by combining chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). With the interpenetrating network crosslinked by alginate, chitosan (CS) and metal ions as the substrate, PB was generated and embedded in the micromotor at the same time of crosslinking. The micromotors are more stable and could capture bacteria with the addition of CS. The micromotors show excellent performance, containing photothermal conversion, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and bubble produced by catalyzing Fenton reaction for motion, which served as therapeutic agent could chemically kill bacteria and physically destroy biofilm. This research work opens a new path of an innovative strategy to efficiently remove biofilm.

3D printing of cellulose nanocrystals based composites to build robust biomimetic scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are drawing increasing attention in the fields of biomedicine and healthcare owing to their durability, biocompatibility, biodegradability and excellent mechanical properties. Herein, we fabricated using fused deposition modelling technology 3D composite scaffolds from polylactic acid (PLA) and CNC extracted from Ficus thonningii. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the printed scaffolds exhibit interconnected pores with an estimated average pore size of approximately 400 µm. Incorporating 3% (w/w) of CNC into the composite improved PLA mechanical properties (Young's modulus increased by ~ 30%) and wettability (water contact angle decreased by ~ 17%). The mineralization process of printed scaffolds using simulated body fluid was validated and nucleation of hydroxyapatite confirmed. Additionally, cytocompatibility tests revealed that PLA and CNC-based PLA scaffolds are non-toxic and compatible with bone cells. Our design, based on rapid 3D printing of PLA/CNC composites, combines the ability to control the architecture and provide improved mechanical and biological properties of the scaffolds, which opens perspectives for applications in bone tissue engineering and in regenerative medicine.

Carbon-based photocatalysts for hydrogen production: A review

Future energy crises and environmental deterioration may only be avoided by converting solar energy into sustainable, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly technologies such as water splitting. Many researchers and governments throughout the globe have stressed the imperative need for affordable, environmental benign, resistive to corrosion, and earth-abundant nanostructured photocatalysts. This has led scientists to look for a green and cost-effective way to generate energy. As a result, the significance of photo catalyst engineering and reactor design difficulties connected to the performance of the photocatalytic reactions, as well as the examination and analysis of photocatalyst behaviors for adaptable and cost effective H2 production, is emphasized and summarized. The carbon-based materials have an appealing band structure, strong chemical stability, is plentiful on Earth, and is relatively easy to produce, making them suitable for hydrogen production. As example, graphene oxide (GO) with the oxygenated functional groups and graphene and its counterparts, including Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), GO, reduce graphene oxide (rGO), have been demonstrated to be ideal nanocomposite materials due to their superior properties and distribution in matrix and CNTs with excellent electronic transmission efficiency, low cost, stability, and environmental friendly are a great alternative of electron mediators for photocatalytic devices to boost light absorptivity for efficient hydrogen generation but some of them have limited photocatalytic activity due to their low sunlight usage efficiency, therefore the numerous methods, such as doping ions, constructing heterostructure, and functionalizing carbon-based materials, have recently been proven to promote the photocatalytic activity of them. The pore structure of carbon material functions as an acceptor of photogenerated electrons, improved the photocatalyst's specific surface area. Generally low-dimensional carbon materials demonstrated immense promise as highly efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly catalysts for hydrogen generation as an energy source. This article reviews the recent research progress on carbon-based materials for hydrogen evolution for the first time. It commences with a quick overview of the present state of affairs and fundamental concepts of hydrogen production in carbon-based nanomaterials for use in this field. We anticipate that this study will inspire readers to expand the use of carbon-based materials in H₂ generation in a more environmentally friendly way.

Preparation and Phytotoxicity Evaluation of Cellulose Acetate Nanoparticles

The use of biocompatible and low-cost polymeric matrices to produce non-phytotoxic nanoparticles for delivery systems is a promising alternative for good practices in agriculture management and biotechnological applications. In this context, there is still a lack of studies devoted to producing low-cost polymeric nanoparticles that exhibit non-phytotoxic properties. Among the different polymeric matrices that can be used to produce low-cost nanoparticles, we can highlight the potential application of cellulose acetate, a natural biopolymer with biocompatible and biodegradable properties, which has already been used as fibers, membranes, and films in different agricultural and biotechnological applications. Here, we provided a simple and low-cost route to produce cellulose acetate nanoparticles (CA-NPs), by modified emulsification solvent evaporation technique, with a main diameter of around 200 nm and a spherical and smooth morphology for potential use as agrochemical nanocarriers. The non-phytotoxic properties of the produced cellulose acetate nanoparticles were proved by performing a plant toxic test by Allium cepa assay. The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity tests allowed us to evaluate the mitotic process, chromosomal abnormalities, inhibition/delay in root growth, and micronucleus induction. In summary, the results demonstrated that CA-NPs did not induce phytotoxic, cytotoxic, or genotoxic effects, and they did not promote changes in the root elongation, germination or in the mitotic, chromosomal aberration, and micronucleus indices. Consequently, the present findings indicated that CA-NPs can be potentially used as environmentally friendly nanoparticles.

Recent advances and future perspective on nanocellulose-based materials in diverse water treatment applications

Over the past few years, nanocellulose and its derivatives have drawn attention as promising bio-based materials for water treatment applications due to their high surface area, high strength, and renewable, biocompatible nature. The abundance of hydroxyl functional groups on the surfaces of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) enables a broad range of surface modifications which results in propitious nanocomposites with tunable characteristics. In this context, this review describes the continuously developing applications of nanocellulose-based materials in the areas of adsorption, catalysis, filtration, and flocculation, with a special emphasis on the removal of contaminants such as heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceutical compounds from diverse water systems. Recent progresses in the diverse forms of application of nanocellulose adsorbents (suspension, hydrogel, aerogel, and membrane) are also highlighted. Finally, challenges and future perspectives on emerging nanocellulose-based materials and their possible industrial applications are presented and discussed.

Developing Electrospun Ethylcellulose Nanofibrous Webs: An Alternative Approach for Structuring Castor Oil

The development of environment-friendly natural polymer gel-like dispersions in oil media, with functional properties, in terms of formulation design and synthesis protocol, is still a cutting-edge research area for many applications. The aim of this work was to study the manufacture of electrospun ethylcellulose (EC) nanofibrous webs and to examine their usage to thicken vegetable oils as an alternative approach. The role of concentration, molecular weight (Mw), and binary solvent systems on the electrospinnability of EC and subsequently on the rheological properties of EC nanofiber dispersions in castor oil was investigated. It was observed that, for each Mw, defect-free nanofibers were produced above a critical concentration, corresponding to about 2.5 the entanglement concentration (Ce). The average fiber diameter increased with both Mw and EC concentrations. Dielectric constant and dipole moment of binary solvent systems influenced the morphology of the EC nanofiber web. The morphology of the micro- and nanoarchitectures generated played a key role in the physical stabilization and rheological behavior of electrospun EC dispersions. The storage modulus (G') of EC dispersions was correlated with both the spinning solution concentration and average fiber diameter. Furthermore, electrospun EC nanofiber dispersions were compared with EC oleogels obtained by traditional thermogelation from thermorheological and tribological points of view. Overall, this work proposes an efficient and innovative approach to produce bio-based oleogel-like dispersions with great potential in different sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food, or lubricants.

Cellulose Nanofibers from Schinus molle: Preparation and Characterization

Schinus molle (SM) was investigated as a primary source of cellulose with the aim of discovering resources to generate cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The SM was put through a soda pulping process to purify the cellulose, and then, the fiber was treated with an enzymatic treatment. Then, a twin-screw extruder and/or masuko were utilized to help with fiber delamination during the nanofibrillation process. After the enzymatic treatment, the twin-screw extruder and masuko treatment give a yield of 49.6 and 50.2%, respectively. The optical and atomic force microscopy, morfi, and polymerization degrees of prepared cellulosic materials were established. The pulp fibers, collected following each treatment stage, demonstrated that fiber characteristics such as length and crystallinity varied according to the used treatment (mechanical or enzymatic treatment). Obviously, the enzymic treatment resulted in shorter fibers and an increased degree of polymerization. However, the CNF obtained after enzymatic and extrusion treatment was achieved, and it gave 19 nm as the arithmetic width and a Young's modulus of 8.63 GPa.

A novel 2-dimensional nanocomposite as a mediator for the determination of doxorubicin in biological samples

In our study, the electrochemical properties of a novel activated nanocomposite were studied with 2-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride/sodium dodecyl sulfate/graphene nanoplatelets on the screen-printed electrodes (2D-g-C₃N₄/SDS/GNPs/SPE). The as-fabricated sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, including wide dynamic ranges from 0.03 to 1.0 and 1.0-13.5 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10.0 nM. The fabricated 2D-g-C₃N₄/SDS/GNPs/SPE electrode exhibited high sensitivity, stability, good reproducibility, reusability, and repeatability towards DOX sensing. It can be utilized in real samples, including human plasma and urine, with excellent correlations and coefficients of variation below 6.0%. Therefore, this study presents potential application values in sensing DOX with efficient performance. Simple high-temperature annealing affords commercial carbon cloth with enhanced electrochemical performance for highly sensitive detection of imidacloprid

Imidacloprid (IDP) residue in modern agricultural production seriously endangers human health and environmental safety. The establishment of a rapid and efficient method for the detection of IDP residue can effectively prevent its harm to human health. Herein, we demonstrate the carbon cloth (CC) prepared by a high-temperature annealing strategy possesses enhanced electrochemical performance, which could be directly used in electrochemical IDP sensing. Annealed carbon cloth (ACC) is endowed with higher defects, rougher surfaces, more functional groups, more hydrophilic surface, and increased ion-accessible surface area. Furthermore, the ACC electrode shows superior electrocatalytic reduction activity towards IDP, possessing a wide linear range of 5-100 μM, a low detection limit of 0.04 μM, and high sensitivity of 35.58 μA mM^-1 cm^-2. Meanwhile, this sensor can be applied for sensing IDP in grapes and apples with a good recovery of 96.8-104.1%. Compared with other modified electrodes, the ACC electrode has the advantages of no binder, no complicated modification, excellent detection effect, low cost, and easy large-scale production. Consequently, this work designs a self-supporting metal-free electrode with high electrochemical performance, providing a new idea for the development of environmentally friendly IDP sensors.

Nano-architectural design of TiO2 for high performance photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant: A review

In the past several decades, significant efforts have been paid toward photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in environmental research. During the past years, titanium dioxide nano-architectures (TiO₂ NAs) have been widely used in water purification applications with photocatalytic degradation processes under Uv/Vis light illumination. Photocatalysis process with nano-architectural design of TiO₂ is viewed as an efficient procedure for directly channeling solar energy into water treatment reactions. The considerable band-gap values and the subsequent short life time of photo-generated charge carriers are showed among the limitations of this approach. One of these effective efforts is the using of oxidation processes with advance semiconductor photocatalyst NAs for degradation the organic pollutants under UV/Vis irradiation. Among them, nano-architectural design of TiO₂ photocatalyst (such as Janus, yolk-shell (Y@S), hollow microspheres (HMSs) and nano-belt) is an effective way to improve oxidation processes for increasing photocatalytic activity in water treatment applications. In the light of the above issues, this study tends to provide a critical overview of the used strategies for preparing TiO₂ photocatalysts with desirable physicochemical properties like enhanced absorption of light, low density, high surface area, photo-stability, and charge-carrier behavior. Among the various nanoarchitectural design of TiO₂, the Y@S and HMSs have created a great appeal given their considerable large surface area, low density, homogeneous catalytic environment, favorable light harvesting properties, and enhanced molecular diffusion kinetics of the particles. In this review was summarized the developments that have been made for nano-architectural design of TiO2 photocatalyst. Additional focus is placed on the realization of interfacial charge and the possibility of achieving charge carriers separation for these NAs as electron migration is the extremely important factor for increasing the photocatalytic activity.

Facile Synthesis of NiO/ZnO nanocomposite as an effective platform for electrochemical determination of carbamazepine

The pharmaceutical science demand for sustainable and selective electrochemical sensors which exhibit ultrasensitive capabilities for the monitoring of different drugs. In an attempt to build a useful electrochemical sensor, we describe a most efficient method for the fabrication of NiO/ZnO nanocomposite through aqueous chemical growth method. The successfully synthesized NiO/ZnO nanocomposite is successfully employed to modify a glassy carbon electrode in order to build a sensitive and reliable electrochemical sensor for the detection of carbamazepine (CBZ), an anticonvulsant drug. The morphological texture, functionalities and crystalline structure of prepared nanocomposite were determined via FTIR, XRD, EDX, TEM, and SEM analysis. In order to examine the charge transfer kinetics, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to exploit the electrochemical properties of the synthesized nanocomposite. The NiO/ZnO nanocomposite exhibited excellent electron transfer kinetics and less resistive behavior than the individual NiO and ZnO nanoparticles. The differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry tools were used for the fluent determination of CBZ. Certain parameters were optimized to develop an effective method including optimum scan rate 60 mV/s, potential range from 0.4 to 1.4 V and BRB as supporting electrolyte with pH 3. The developed sensor showed exceptional response for CBZ under the linear dynamic range from 5 to 100 μM. The limit of detection of proposed NiO/ZnO sensor for the CBZ was calculated to be 0.08 μM. The analytical approach of prepared electrochemical sensor was investigated in different pharmaceutical formulation with acceptable percent recoveries ranging from 96.7 to 98.6%.

Nanocellulose implantation enriched the pore structure of aerogel for effective particulate matter removal

Particulate matter (PM) pollution poses a serious threat to public health, disposable and degradable filter materials are expected to handle the problem in the future. Here, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/borax/cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) aerogels were implanted on a biodegradable corrugated paper to form composite air filters for the first time via freeze-drying the coated composite hydrogels. The low content of CNF and PVA could be cross-linked by borax to form hydrogels, which enhanced its maneuverability for surface implanting on the substrate. More importantly, the addition of CNF greatly enriched the pore structure of aerogels, which provided a structural basis for PM capture. The as-prepared composite air filters exhibited excellent filtration efficiencies of 92 % and 96 % toward PM1.0 and PM3.0, respectively. Moreover, the addition of dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin endowed the filters with an antibacterial property. This work shows a new possibility for the design of degradable and functional filter materials.

Simultaneous determination of hydrochlorothiazide, amlodipine, and telmisartan with spectrophotometric and HPLC green chemistry applications

For the quantifiable amounts of Telmisartan (TLM) and Hydrochlorothiazide (HYD) in the presence of Amlodipine (AML) in a ternary mixture of synthetic laboratory mixture, a novel, sensitive, quick, and practical reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was given. In order to separate, a Waters Spherisorb ODS-2 C18 column was used. For HYD, TLM, and AML, these techniques were viable over linearity ranges of 4-12 μg/mL, 4-25 μg/mL, and 5-40 μg/mL, respectively. The mobile phase system was acetonitrile:methanol: phosphate buffer at pH 2.5 (65:5:30 v/v/v), and the flow rate was 1.5 mL/min. Novel spectrophotometric methods were applied for active substances to determine simultaneously. The first method is absorptivity centering using factorized spectrum, and the second method is dual amplitude difference coupled with absorbance subtraction. These approaches have been effectively applied to bulk, laboratory synthetic mixtures to employ active components quantitatively. Correlation coefficients were found to be higher than 0.99 and the limit of detection values lower than 0.49 μg/mL in both spectrophotometric methods. The methodologies were validated following ICH recommendations. In the developed HPLC method, the limit of detection values was found to be 0.01 μg/mL for HYD and 0.02 μg/mL for AML and TLM. The correlation coefficients for the HPLC method were found to be 0.9971 for HYD, 0.9990 for AML, and 0.9983 for TLM. The suggested HPLC technique is a simple, effective, sensitive, environmentally friendly, and time-saving approach for determining TLM and HYD in the presence of AML.
