Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to verify if soft-skills training is an effective intervention in reducing work-related stress among miners, that is, people who run the risk of losing health and/or life due to unpredictable natural forces or human error at work. BACKGROUND The motivation for the intervention was based on Job Demands-Resources model where soft skills are job resources that help individuals to cope with or prevent high demands of the environment. The needed skills as well as work demands were first investigated and then a custom training was developed. The rationale for introducing soft-skills training into the work environment can be seen as compatible with the Human Capital Model (HCM) which is designed to stimulate positive organizational behaviour by providing an effective approach to ensure employees' adequate coping with work-related stress. METHOD 96 volunteer employees were assigned to intervention (n = 48) and comparison (n = 48) groups. 16-hour tailored training covered tasks and simulation games related to communication, teambuilding, self-management and conflict resolution skills. Job Content Questionnaire, Occupational Stress Indicator (modified to fit the mining environment) and General Health Questionnaire were used in the study. A MANOVA with effect-size measures was conducted. RESULTS Results revealed a significant increase in decision latitude and social support for the trainees. A substantial decrease in stress was also observed, along with a significant decrease in general health problems. There were no such changes in the comparison group. CONCLUSIONS A soft-skills training, including communication, teamwork, self-motivation and conflict-resolution skills, helped participants to cope better with the stressful environment and improved their mental health. These effects lasted three months later. APPLICATION The intervention improved miners' psychosocial health and the strategies of coping with stress, which increased safety and health in the company. Investigating the effectiveness of such interventions included in the general Human Capital Model, as it was done in the study, might be a step forward towards building an interdisciplinary approach for health and safety and human resources.

Abstract
This study examined the prevalence and associations between occupational-related diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in Northern China. The study sampled 506 miners from two coal mines in Northern China. Descriptive (frequency, percentages, and chi-square tests) and inferential (complementary log-log logistic regression) analyses were carried out to assess prevalence and associations. The prevalence of coal mining-related pulmonary diseases was 94%, with 40% and 37% reporting pneumoconiosis and bronchitis respectively. Emphysema and tuberculosis were less prevalent with a total prevalence of 5% while 12% of the miners reported two, three, or four of these diseases. For cardiovascular diseases, 66% of the miners reported 3H (hypertension, hyperlipemia, and hyperglycemia) while heart disease and cerebral infarction were reported by 6% and 2% of the miners respectively. Also, 5% and 2% of the miners reported two or all three of 3H, heart condition, and cerebral infarction. The overall prevalence of cardiovascular diseases was 81% while 82% and 63% of the miners reported experiencing some frequency of emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety respectively. The study also identified associations between mining-related diseases, emotional exhaustion, dust mask anxiety, and other demographic, personal habits and work-related factors. Miners with pulmonary diseases were more likely to experience emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety. Contrariwise, miners with cardiovascular diseases were less likely to experience dust mask anxiety. Factors such as age, engaging in physical exercises, rhinitis, source of pressure and shift system were also associated with emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety. These findings highlight the prevalence of occupational diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in China. The study emphasizes the need for interventions to address health risks, improve work conditions, and support miners' well-being in the coal mining industry.

Abstract
Some prior research has suggested that the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene may amplify responses related to life stress (e.g., depression and anxiety) or associated with negative moods (e.g., self-harm and diminished cognitive functioning). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether stress/mood-related associations with depressive and anxiety symptoms, deliberate self-harm, and executive functioning (EF) are moderated by genotypic variations in BDNF rs10835210 (a relatively understudied BDNF polymorphism) in a nonclinical sample. As part of a larger study, European American social drinkers (N = 132; 43.9% female; M age = 26.0, SD = 7.6) were genotyped for BDNF rs10835210 and were administered self-report measures of subjective life stress, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and history of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and behavioral measures of EF and deliberate self-harm. Results indicated that BDNF significantly moderated the life stress associations with depressive symptoms and NSSI, the anxious mood association with EF, and the depressed mood association with deliberate self-harm behavior. Each of these BDNF × stress/mood interactions were characterized by stress/mood associations that were stronger in individuals with the AA genotype (homozygous for the minor allele) than in individuals possessing a genotype that included the major allele (AC or CC). The main limitations of the present study were use of a cross-sectional design, modest sample size, and investigating only one BDNF polymorphism. Despite these limitations and though preliminary, current findings suggest that variations in BDNF may confer vulnerability to stress or mood, which may result in more adverse emotional, cognitive, or behavioral outcomes.

Abstract
RATIONALE Sleep disturbances was associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. Many studies have reported that long-term exposure to job stress can lead to sleep disturbances, which may be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study investigated whether circadian clock gene polymorphisms modulated the influence of job stress on sleep disturbances in a Chinese Han population, which to our best knowledge has not been explored. METHODS The Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were both used to access job stress and sleep disturbances. The SNaPshot SNP assay was carried out by screening for circadian clock gene polymorphisms in every participant. Interactions associated with sleep disturbances were assessed by linear hierarchical regression analysis and SPSS macros (PROCESS). RESULTS Linear hierarchical regression analysis showed that job stress was significantly related to sleep disturbances. Likewise, our study found a significant effect of PER2 rs2304672 polymorphisms on sleep disturbances (p < 0.01), after controlling for confounding factors. In addition, the PER2 rs2304672 genotype modulated the relationship between job stress and sleep disturbances (β = 0.414, p = 0.007). Interestingly, further analysis of the results of the PER2 gene rs2304672 × job stress interaction showed that rs2304672 G-allele carriers had a high-risk effect on sleep disturbances under high job stress. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the PER2 rs2304672 polymorphism may modulate the influence of job stress on sleep disturbances. These findings contribute to the field of sleep disturbances prevention and treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have investigated the association of insulin resistance (IR) surrogates and the risk of hypertension. However, it is unclear whether there exist differences between different IR surrogates and hypertension risk. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association of four IR surrogates (triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), triglyceride-glucose index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c), and metabolic score for IR (METS-IR)) with the prevalence of hypertension. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study with a total of 117,056 participants. Data were extracted from a computerized database established by Rich Healthcare Group in China, which included all medical records of participants who received a health check-up from 2010 to 2016. IR surrogates were grouped into quartiles as continuous variables, and multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between different IR surrogate levels and the prevalence of hypertension. Results were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Missing data were accounted by multiple imputation. These analyses were considered as the sensitivity analysis. Meanwhile, the Bayesian network (BN) model was constructed to further evaluate the relationship between baseline characteristics and the four IR surrogates and the prevalence of hypertension, as well as the importance of every single variable for the prevalence of hypertension. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that TyG-BMI and METS-IR were independent risk factors for the prevalence of hypertension that increased significantly with increasing TyG-BMI and METS-IR (p for trend < 0.001). The area under the TyG-BMI curve (AUC) was 0.681 [95% CI: 0.677-0.685], and the cut-off value was 199.5, with a sensitivity and specificity of 65.57% and 61.18%, respectively. While the area under the METS-IR curve (AUC) was 0.679 [95% CI: 0.674-0.683], and the cut-off value was 33.61, with a sensitivity and specificity of 69.67% and 56.67%, respectively. The BN model presented that among these four IR surrogates and related variables, TyG-BMI was the most important predictor of hypertension prevalence, with a significance of 34%. The results before and after multiple imputation were similar. CONCLUSION TyG-BMI and METS-IR were independent risk factors for the prevalence of hypertension. TyG-BMI and METS-IR had good predictive value for the prevalence of hypertension, and TyG-BMI was superior to METS-IR.

Abstract
The unsafe behavior of miners seriously affects the safety of deep mining. A comprehensive evaluation of miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines can prevent coal mine accidents. This study combines HFACS-CM, SEM, and SD models to evaluate miners' unsafe behaviors in deep coal mining. First, the HFACS-CM model identifies the risk factors affecting miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines. Second, SEM was used to analyze the interaction between risk factors and miners' unsafe behavior. Finally, the SD model was used to simulate the sensitivity of each risk factor to miners' unsafe behavior to explore the best prevention and control strategies for unsafe behavior. The results showed that (1) environmental factors, organizational influence, unsafe supervision, and unsafe state of miners are the four main risk factors affecting the unsafe behavior of miners in deep coal mines. Among them, the unsafe state of miners is the most critical risk factor. (2) Environmental factors, organizational influence, unsafe supervision, and the unsafe state of miners have both direct and indirect impacts on unsafe behaviors, and their immediate effects are far more significant than their indirect influence. (3) Environmental factors, organizational influence, and unsafe supervision positively impact miners' unsafe behavior through the mediating effect of miners' unsafe states. (4) Mental state, physiological state, business abilities, resource management, and organizational climate were the top five risk factors affecting miners' unsafe behaviors. Taking measures to improve the adverse environmental factors, strengthening the organization's supervision and management, and improving the unsafe state of miners can effectively reduce the risk of miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines. This study provides a new idea and method for preventing and controlling the unsafe behavior of miners in deep coal mines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A nomogram for predicting the risk of mental health problems was established in a population of factory workers and miners, in order to quickly calculate the probability of a worker suffering from mental health problems. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 7500 factory workers and miners in Urumqi was conducted by means of an electronic questionnaire using cluster sampling method. Participants were randomly assigned to the training group (70%) and the validation group (30%). Questionnaire-based survey was conducted to collect information. A least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model was used to screen the predictors related to the risk of mental health problems of the training group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to construct the prediction model. Calibration plots and receiver operating characteristic-derived area under the curve (AUC) were used for model validation. Decision curve analysis was applied to calculate the net benefit of the screening model. RESULTS A total of 7118 participants met the inclusion criteria and the data were randomly divided into a training group (n=4955) and a validation group (n=2163) in a ratio of 3:1. A total of 23 characteristics were included in this study and LASSO regression selected 12 characteristics such as education, professional title, age, Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory, effort-reward imbalance, asbestos dust, hypertension, diabetes, working hours per day, working years, marital status and work schedule as predictors for the construction of the nomogram. In the validation group, the Brier score was 0.176, the calibration slope was 0.970 and the calibration curve of nomogram showed a good fit. The AUC of training group and verification group were 0.785 and 0.784, respectively. CONCLUSION The nomogram combining these 12 characteristics can be used to predict the risk of suffering mental health problems, providing a useful tool for quickly and accurately screening the risk of mental health problems.

Abstract
Most coal mine accidents are caused by the unsafe behavior of employees. Previous studies have shown that there is a significant connection among the working environment, the psychological state of employees, and unsafe behaviors. However, the internal biological mechanism has not been revealed. To explore the physiological and psychological alterations of coal mine workers and the underlying mechanisms that cause unsafe behaviors, the current study established a novel coal mine environment biological simulation (CEBS) model in mice. This model recreated the underground workplace environment facts in coal mines such as temperature, humidity, and noise, and mice were employed to receive these conditioning stresses according to the 8-h work. Animal behavior tests were performed to evaluate the evolution of the mental state including anxiety and depression, as well as the abilities of learning and memory during the 4-week environmental simulation. CEBS mice showed the adaptation process of anxiety from occurrence to stability in the process of environmental simulation, and also suffered from severe depression compared to the control mice. In addition, impaired spatial memory was also implicated in mice after 4-week CEBS. The behavior results of CEBS mice were consistent with the previous psychological investigation of coal workers. In summary, a novel mouse model was established in this study to depict the occurrence of negative emotions and impaired cognition in coal miners by simulating the underground workplace environment, which provided a basis for further exploring the biological mechanism of miners’ unsafe behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D is related to human immunity, so we used Bayesian network model to analyze and infer the relationship between vitamin D level and the acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear-positive after two months treatment among pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. 731 TB patients whose vitamin D level were detected and medical records were collected from December 2019 to December 2020 in XinJiang of China. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of second AFB smear-positive. Bayesian network was used to further analyze the causal relationship among vitamin D level and the second AFB smear-positive. RESULTS Baseline AFB smear-positive (OR = 6.481, 95%CI: 1.604~26.184), combined cavity (OR = 3.204, 95%CI: 1.586~6.472), full supervision (OR = 8.173, 95%CI:1.536~43.492) and full management (OR = 6.231, 95%CI:1.031~37.636) were not only the risk factors and can also be considered as the reasons for second AFB smear-positive in TB patients (Ensemnle > 0.5). There was no causal relationship between vitamin D level and second AFB smear-positive (Ensemnle = 0.0709). CONCLUSIONS The risk factors of second AFB smear-positive were baseline AFB smear-positive, combined cavity, full supervision and full management. The vitamin D level in TB patients was not considered as one of the reasons for the AFB smear-positive.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the current working ability of coal chemical workers in Xinjiang, and analyze the impact of occupational stress, mental disorders, and their interaction on work ability. To provide a scientific basis for improving the working ability and quality of life of coal chemical workers. METHODS In this study, a stratified random sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey of 1,400 workers in six coal mining enterprises from June to December 2019. The Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire (ERI), the Symptoms Checklist 90 (SCL-90), and the Work Ability Index Scale (WAI) were used to evaluate the level of occupational stress, mental disorders, and the ability to work as coal chemical workers. RESULTS The results showed that WAI scores had statistically significant differences between gender, age, length of service, shift, education, marital status, and monthly income (P < 0.05). The ability to work and its dimensions were inversely correlated with occupational stress, and mental disorders (P < 0.001). Occupational stress and mental disorders are risk factors affecting the ability to work. Workers with high occupational stress* mental disorders (OR = 10.666, 95% CI: 6.443-17.658) are 10.666 times more likely to be at risk for developing poor work ability than low occupational stress* no mental disorders. Structural equation models show that occupational stress and mental health conditions had a direct impact on work ability, and mental health conditions were the mediators of the relationship between occupational stress and work ability. CONCLUSION Occupational stress, mental disorders, and their interaction are risk factors affecting the ability of coal chemical workers to work. Occupational stress can indirectly affect the ability to work through mental health conditions.

Abstract
Objectives. Looking at death statistics in workplaces, occupational health and safety (OHS) is indisputably one of the most important problems of society. Considering that the existing measures are insufficient to reduce deaths, it is essential to look at the prevention of occupational accidents/diseases with an interdisciplinary approach and to employ new perspectives in order to develop new methods. The aim of this study is to determine whether psychosocial risks are perceived as an accident factor by employees and to bring the concept of psychosocial accident factors into a discussion. Methods. The survey technique is used as a data collection tool for this study. The questionnaire has 33 questions. SPSS version 25.0 was used to analyze the data. Results. The study showed that employees who had an accident perceived psychosocial factors as an important accident factor. Conclusions. Studies on causes of accidents at work are generally based on a single dimension, such as environmental conditions and/or faults of employees. There is almost no focus on the reasons for the misbehaviors of employees. Psychosocial factors are not taken into account or neglected, but results show that providing psychosocial support and/or psychological counseling services in workplaces may be effective in reducing accidents.
