Abstract
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease resulting in progressive loss of memory, language and motor abilities caused by cortical and hippocampal degeneration. This review captures the landscape of understanding of AD pathology, diagnostics, and current therapies. Two major mechanisms direct AD pathology: (1) accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) plaque and (2) tau-derived neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). The most common variants in the Aβ pathway in APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2 are largely responsible for early-onset AD (EOAD), while MAPT, APOE, TREM2 and ABCA7 have a modifying effect on late-onset AD (LOAD). More recent studies implicate chaperone proteins and Aβ degrading proteins in AD. Several tests, such as cognitive function, brain imaging, and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and blood tests, are used for AD diagnosis. Additionally, several biomarkers seem to have a unique AD specific combination of expression and could potentially be used in improved, less invasive diagnostics. In addition to genetic perturbations, environmental influences, such as altered gut microbiome signatures, affect AD. Effective AD treatments have been challenging to develop. Currently, there are several FDA approved drugs (cholinesterase inhibitors, Aß-targeting antibodies and an NMDA antagonist) that could mitigate AD rate of decline and symptoms of distress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence of associations between psychological symptoms and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level is scant, as is evidence on sex differences in associations for children and adolescents with obesity. This study examined sex differences in associations between psychological symptoms (self-concept, anxiety, depression, anger, and disruptive behavior) and TNF-α level in Taiwanese children and adolescents with healthy weight, overweight, or obesity. METHODS In 2010, 564 first, fourth, and seventh graders-comprising 250 children with overweight or obesity (44.3 %), 330 adolescents (58.5 %), and 303 males (53.7 %)-underwent a health examination and blood sampling and completed a questionnaire. RESULTS A significantly higher TNF-α level was found in children and adolescents with healthy weight than in those with overweight or obesity (median: 14.5 vs. 4.1 (pg/mL); p < 0.001). In multiple linear regression models, anxiety was significantly positively associated with TNF-α level in female participants with healthy weight (β = 0.11 per 10 increments in anxiety, 95 % confidence interval = 0.01-0.22). LIMITATIONS Given the cross-sectional nature of the study, no inferences of causal relationships among TNF-α level, obesity, and psychological symptoms could be made. CONCLUSIONS The findings enrich the literature on the TNF-α-psychological symptom association. Sex differences were found in children and adolescents without obesity rather than in those without obesity, and a higher TNF-α level was associated with increased anxiety in girls without obesity. The role of sex differences in the complex associations among psychological symptoms, TNF-α level, and overweight or obesity requires further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mental distress has a high global prevalence and is associated with poor health outcomes. This study aimed to estimate the relationship between mental distress and the risk of 10 chronic diseases using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS Cross-sectional data from the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 BRFSS were analyzed. The association between mental distress based on the number of days of poor mental health and the risk of 10 chronic diseases, namely obesity, diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arthritis, kidney disease, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, skin cancer, and other cancers, were assessed by logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analyses stratified by age and sex were also conducted. RESULTS Positive associations between mental distress and chronic diseases were observed. We also found a dose-response gradient between mental distress levels and the risk of all chronic diseases except skin cancer. In respondents aged 18-44 years reporting ≥23 days/month of mental distress, there has the largest odds ratio between mental distress levels and each chronic disease. Moreover, mental distress was associated with higher risks of obesity and arthritis in women relative to men. CONCLUSIONS Mental distress was positively associated with chronic diseases. Age and sex are crucial in this relationship. Further studies with longitudinal data are needed to clarify the direction of this association.

Abstract
We studied the effects of photoperiods on the growth performance, blood profile, welfare parameters, and carcass characteristics of broilers. A total of 336 male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into 4 treatments (84 birds per treatment with 4 replicates), based on the following lighting regimen: 24 h continuous light (24L), 18 h continuous light (18L:6D), 8 h continuous light (8L:16D), and intermittent light (4L:2D). Body weight and feed intake of 7- and 35-day-old broilers were measured. At 5 weeks of age, 12 birds per treatment were selected for blood collection and carcass analysis. Body weight, body weight gain, and feed intake were the lowest in the 8L:16D treatment (p < 0.05). The heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, aspartate aminotransferase, interleukin-6, and corticosterone levels in the 24L treatment increased significantly when compared to that in the 18L:6D treatment (p < 0.05). The footpad dermatitis score was significantly lower in the 18L:6D and 8L:16D treatments than in the 24L and 4L:2D treatments (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the carcass and meat characteristics, except for the shear force of breast meat (Pectoralis major), which was the lowest in the 8L:16D treatment (p < 0.05). These results indicate that a photoperiod of 18 h resulted in an improvement in the performance and welfare of birds and a simultaneous decrease in stress level. However, further research is needed to establish a lighting regimen that satisfies both the productivity and welfare requirements of broilers in different feeding phases.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of light intensity on growth performance, blood components, eye condition, and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens. Three hundred and fifty-two 1-day-old male chicks were assigned to one of four treatments (four repetitions per treatment, 22 birds per repetition) and reared in a floor pen for 5 weeks. From the second week, chicks were reared under four different levels of light intensity (5, 20, 35, and 50 lx) and the lighting duration was maintained at 18-hours light : 6-hours dark (18L : 6D). The feed intake and body weight were measured weekly. At 35 days of age, 12 birds per treatment were randomly selected for blood sampling, eye measurement, and carcass analysis. There were no significant differences in body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio among treatments. Triglyceride levels in the serum were significantly higher in the 5 lx treatment, and creatinine was significantly lower in the 5 lx treatment (p < 0.05). The heterophil : lymphocyte ratios decreased significantly as light intensity increased (p < 0.05); however, other blood cell compositions were not affected by light intensity. Interleukin-6 content was significantly higher in the 5 lx treatment than in other treatments (p < 0.05), but the content of tumor necrosis factor-α was not significantly different among treatments. Serum corticosterone concentration was significantly higher at 5 lx than at 20, 35, and 50 lx (p < 0.05). The corneal diameter was the highest in 5 lx treatment (p < 0.05), and tended to increase as the light intensity decreased. Other eye parameters were not significantly different among treatments, but displayed a tendency to increase as the light intensity decreased. Carcass yield and part yields were not affected by light intensity. Meat quality parameters (pH, color, cooking loss, and water-holding capacity) did not show significant difference among the treatments. The results indicate that a light intensity of 5 lx may increase physiological stress or have a negative effect on broiler welfare, even if the performance and carcass characteristics are not affected. Therefore, a light intensity of 20 lx or above is recommended considering both the growth performance and welfare of broilers.

Abstract
Stressor exposure increases colonic inflammation. Because inflammation leads to anxiety-like behavior, we tested whether stressor exposure in mice recovering from dextran-sulfate-sodium (DSS)-induced colitis enhances anxiety-like behavior. Mice received 2% DSS for five consecutive days prior to being exposed to a social-disruption (SDR) stressor (or being left undisturbed). After stressor exposure, their behavior was tested and colitis was assessed via histopathology and via inflammatory-cytokine measurement in the serum and colon. Cytokine and chemokine mRNA levels in the colon, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs), hippocampus, and amygdala were measured with RT-PCR. SDR increased anxiety-like behaviors, which correlated with serum and hippocampal IL-17A. The stressor also reduced IL-1β, CCL2, and iNOS in the colonic tissue, but increased iNOS, IFNγ, IL-17A, and TNFα in the MLNs. A network analysis indicated that reductions in colonic iNOS were related to elevated MLN iNOS and IFNγ. These inflammatory markers were related to serum and hippocampal IL-17A and associated with anxiety-like behavior. Our data suggest that iNOS may protect against extra-colonic inflammation, and when suppressed during stress it is associated with elevated MLN IFNγ, which may coordinate gut-to-brain inflammation. Our data point to hippocampal IL-17A as a key correlate of anxiety-like behavior.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to several pioneering scientific discoveries resulting in no effective solutions with the exception of vaccination. Moderate exercise is a significant non-pharmacological strategy, to reduce the infection-related burden of COVID-19, especially in patients who are obese, elderly, and with additional comorbidities. The imbalance of T helper type 1 (Th1) or T helper type 2 (Th2) cells has been well documented among populations who have suffered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and who are at maximum risk of infection and mortality. Moderate and low intensity exercise can benefit persons at risk from the disease and survivors by favorable modulation in Th1/Th2 ratios. Moreover, in COVID-19 patients, mild to moderate intensity aerobic exercise also increases immune system function but high intensity aerobic exercise may have adverse effects on immune responses. In addition, sustained hypoxia in COVID-19 patients has been reported to cause organ failure and cell death. Hypoxic conditions have also been highlighted to be triggered in COVID-19-susceptible individuals and COVID-19 survivors. This suggests that hypoxia inducible factor (HIF 1α) might be an important focus for researchers investigating effective strategies to minimize the effects of the pandemic. Intermittent hypoxic preconditioning (IHP) is a method of exposing subjects to short bouts of moderate hypoxia interspersed with brief periods of normal oxygen concentrations (recovery). This methodology inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory factors, activates HIF-1α to activate target genes, and subsequently leads to a higher production of red blood cells and hemoglobin. This increases angiogenesis and increases oxygen transport capacity. These factors can help alleviate virus induced cardiopulmonary hemodynamic disorders and endothelial dysfunction. Therefore, during the COVID-19 pandemic we propose that populations should engage in low to moderate exercise individually designed, prescribed and specific, that utilizes IHP including pranayama (yoga), swimming and high-altitude hiking exercise. This would be beneficial in affecting HIF-1α to combat the disease and its severity. Therefore, the promotion of certain exercises should be considered by all sections of the population. However, exercise recommendations and prescription for COVID-19 patients should be structured to match individual levels of capability and adaptability.

Abstract
Some evidence suggests that anxiety deteriorate the immune system. We aimed to determine the effect of anxiety on COVID‐19 infection in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Our study was conducted with 80 HD patients. State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) questionnaires were administered between April 15 and May 1, 2020. These patients were followed up for about 8 months and COVID‐19 infection, hospitalization, and death rates were recorded. Twenty‐one (26%) of the patients were diagnosed with COVID‐19 infection. Fourteen out of twenty one (66.6%) of the patients were hospitalized, and 8/21 (38%) of them died due to COVID‐19. STAI‐S (p= 0.006) and BAI (p= 0.021) scores were found to be higher and STAI‐T (p= 0.040) score was found to be lower in HD patients who were infected with COVID‐19 compared to without, at the follow‐up period. It might be concluded in this study that COVID‐19 was more common in anxious HD patients.

Abstract
This study examined foot shock stress effects, during weaning, on pancreatic HB9 protein expression in young adult male rats in the presence or absence of adulthood stress. The pups were divided into Control, Early life stress, Young adult stress, and Early + young adult stress groups. Plasma corticosterone, insulin, glucose, and TNF-α concentrations, and pancreatic HB9 protein expression were assessed. At 2 weeks of age, stress increased plasma corticosterone level. During young adulthood, plasma TNF-α and glucose concentrations increased, whereas plasma insulin and pancreatic HB9 protein levels decreased in Early life stress group. Whereas, Early + young adulthood stress group showed no change in the study parameters, except for plasma corticosterone and insulin concentrations. Overall, early life stress reduced pancreatic HB9 protein expression possibly by elevating plasma corticosterone and TNF-α levels in early life and adulthood, respectively. However, combined with adulthood stress, HB9 protein expression increased to the level of Control.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated that rheumatic diseases, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), are associated with anxiety-like behavior and a cognitive decline. Infliximab, a Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-a) inhibitor, and tocilizumab, an antibody against Interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor, are commonly used in the treatment of JIA. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of infliximab and tocilizumab on anxiety symptoms and cognitive function in a juvenile model of severe autoimmune arthritis. We found that both infliximab and tocilizumab improved anxiety-like behavior in the elevated-plus and elevated-zero maze tests. Tocilizumab, also, improved cognitive performance in the passive avoidance and olfactory social memory tests. Histological examination showed that anti-cytokine treatment reversed the histopathological alterations in the brain induced by arthritis. Further, infliximab and tocilizumab treatment increased Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampal and amygdaloid area of rat brain. In summary, our findings provide evidence that infliximab and tocilizumab have a beneficial effect on anxiety-like behavior and cognitive function and alleviate neuropathological alterations in a juvenile rat model of severe arthritis, suggesting that inhibition of TNF-a and IL-6 in the periphery, may be associated with a mood and memory enhancement in JIA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circulating cytokines have been proposed to be implicated in the development of mood disorders and cognitive impairment. This study aims to examine the effect of chronic treatment with infliximab, a tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitor, and tocilizumab, an antibody against interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor on anxiety-like behavior and cognitive function. METHODS Twenty-eight male, Wistar rats were randomly allocated into negative control, vehicle, infliximab and tocilizumab groups. After 8 weeks of intraperitoneal drug administration, rats performed the elevated-plus maze, the elevated-zero maze, the olfactory social memory and the passive avoidance tests. Brain sections at the level of the hippocampus, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex were histologically examined. Finally, hippocampal and amygdaloid brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression was determined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). RESULTS Infliximab group exhibited a significantly higher number of entries and time spent into the open arms of the mazes, showing a lower level of anxiety. In the olfactory social memory test, tocilizumab significantly increased the ratio of interaction. Both infliximab- and tocilizumab-treated animals had a significantly lower latency time in the passive avoidance test that suggests an improved memory. Histological examination revealed similar morphology and neuronal density between groups. BDNF expression levels were significantly increased in the groups receiving anti-cytokine treatment. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that long-term peripheral TNF-alpha and IL-6 inhibition improves anxiety and cognitive function in rats and leads to an increased BDNF expression in the brain.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders and cognitive decline are highly prevalent in rheumatic diseases, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term treatment with infliximab and tocilizumab on anxiety-like behaviour and cognitive performance in a juvenile collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. Forty-nine rats with established moderate arthritis were randomly allocated into 7 equal groups: negative control, vehicle, methotrexate, infliximab, tocilizumab, methotrexate + infliximab and methotrexate + tocilizumab groups. Behavioural tests were performed to evaluate anxiety-like behaviour and cognitive function. Neuropathological changes were investigated by histological examination at the level of the hippocampus, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. Also, the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a biomarker associated with neuronal survival and plasticity, was determined in the hippocampus and the amygdala by RT-qPCR. We found that both infliximab and tocilizumab reduced anxiety-like behaviour in the elevated-plus and elevated-zero maze tests. Tocilizumab, also, improved cognitive function in the olfactory social memory and passive avoidance tests. Anti-cytokine treatment reversed the histopathological changes in the brain induced by CIA. BDNF expression was higher in all treatment groups and especially those receiving monoclonal antibodies combined with methotrexate. Our data provide evidence that chronic infliximab and tocilizumab treatment reduces anxiety-like behaviour, improves cognitive function, reverses neuropathological changes and increases central BDNF expression in a juvenile arthritis rat model. These findings may be translated to humans to address behavioural comorbidities associated with JIA.

Abstract
Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GDM), defined as hyperglycemia with onset or initial recognition during pregnancy, has a rising prevalence paralleling the rise in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity. GDM is associated with short-term and long-term consequences for both mother and child. Therefore, it is crucial we efficiently identify all cases and initiate early treatment, reducing fetal exposure to hyperglycemia and reducing GDM-related adverse pregnancy outcomes. For this reason, GDM screening is recommended as part of routine pregnancy care. The current screening method, the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), is a lengthy, cumbersome and inconvenient test with poor reproducibility. Newer biomarkers that do not necessitate a fasting sample are needed for the prompt diagnosis of GDM. The aim of this scoping review is to highlight and describe emerging protein biomarkers that fulfill these requirements for the diagnosis of GDM. Materials and Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for scoping reviews using Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, Embase and Web of Science with a double screening and extraction process. The search included all articles published in the literature to July 2020. Results: Of the 3519 original database citations identified, 385 were eligible for full-text review. Of these, 332 (86.2%) were included in the scoping review providing a total of 589 biomarkers studied in relation to GDM diagnosis. Given the high number of biomarkers identified, three post hoc criteria were introduced to reduce the items set for discussion: we chose only protein biomarkers with at least five citations in the articles identified by our search and published in the years 2017-2020. When applied, these criteria identified a total of 15 biomarkers, which went forward for review and discussion. Conclusions: This review details protein biomarkers that have been studied to find a suitable test for GDM diagnosis with the potential to replace the OGTT used in current GDM screening protocols. Ongoing research efforts will continue to identify more accurate and practical biomarkers to take GDM screening and diagnosis into the 21st century.

Abstract
Psychological stress affects maternal gastrointestinal (GI) permeability, leading to low-grade inflammation, which can negatively affect fetal development. We investigated a panel of circulating markers as a biological signature of this stress exposure in pregnant women with and without the stress-related GI disorder irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Markers of GI permeability and inflammation were measured in plasma from healthy and IBS cohorts of women at 15 and 20 weeks’ gestation. Biomarkers were evaluated with respect to their degree of association to levels of stress, anxiety, and depression as indicated by responses from the Perceived Stress Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. High levels of stress were associated with elevations of soluble CD14, lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), and tumor necrosis factor–α, while anxiety was associated with elevated concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) in otherwise healthy pregnancies. Prenatal depression was associated with higher levels of soluble CD14, LBP, and CRP in the healthy cohort. High levels of prenatal anxiety and depression were also associated with lower concentrations of tryptophan and kynurenine, respectively, in the IBS cohort. These markers may represent a core maternal biological signature of active prenatal stress, which can be used to inform intervention strategies via stress reduction techniques or other lifestyle approaches. Such interventions may need to be tailored to reflect underlying GI conditions, such as IBS.

Abstract
The intestine and the brain are connected via the brain-gut axis and the intestinal microbiota influences the immune activation and signaling molecules that are involved in the stress response. The aim of the study was to investigate if intake of the probiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HEAL9 (LPHEAL9) for four weeks could counteract elevated cortisol and inflammation levels in subjects with chronic stress that are exposed to an acute stress test (Trier Social Stress Test, TSST). Seventy participants were included, and 63 participants completed the study (LPHEAL9, n = 32; placebo, n = 31). Cardiovascular reactivity and cortisol levels were affected by the TSST, but no differences between the groups were observed. Intake of LPHEAL9 did, however, result in significantly decreased plasma levels of two inflammatory markers (soluble fractalkine and CD163) compared to placebo. In conclusion, intake of LPHEAL9 for four weeks may reduce inflammatory markers coupled to acute stress in chronically stressed individuals.

Abstract
To improve the overall welfare levels of sows and to reduce stress levels at late 35-day lactation, we selected targeted behavioral indicators that might be associated with stress. Therefore, we monitored and evaluated the adaptive capability of two different breeds of sows to the farrowing environment. In this study, Damin sows (Large White × Min pig sows, n = 20) and Large White sows (n = 20) were farrowed in individual pens. Saliva was collected and tested for cortisol density at –15 min, and then at +15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240 min after an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test conducted at 20, 27 and 34 d post-partum. The postures, including ventral and lateral recumbency to other postures, defecating, urinating, sham-chewing and bar-biting behavior, were observed by video from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 13:00 to 15:00 on the 7th day of each week from the 3rd to the 5th week post-parturition. In addition, the concentrations of salivary interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and secretory immunoglobulin (SIgA) were assayed after the observed behaviors. The results showed no significant difference between Damin sows and Large White sows in terms of behaviors at the 3rd week. Additionally, there were no significant differences between Damin and Large White sows in terms of the behaviors of ventral recumbency and bar-biting with the exception of lateral recumbency to other postures, sham-chewing, defecation and urination in the fifth week. Meanwhlie, there was significant difference between two breeds in term of ventral recumbency at the 4th week. The result of the ACTH test showed a significant difference between the Damin and Large White sows by the 27th and 34th days postpartum (P<0.01). In addition, the serological concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α were not significantly different between the two breeds at the 3rd week postpartum. However, these indicators were significantly different at the 5th week postpartum (P = 0.000, and P = 0.003, respectively). The SIgA concentrations in saliva were significantly different between breeds at the 3rd week postpartum (P<0.01). In conclusion, both breeds of sows maybe in a state of stress after the 4th week postpartum. However, the Damin sows may be better than the Large White sows in terms of adapting to this farrowing environment.

Abstract
Objective To examine the influence of anxiety and pain-related catastrophizing on the time course of acute interleukin-6 (IL-6) responses to standardized noxious stimulation among patients with chronic pain. Methods Data were collected from 48 participants in the following demographically matched groups: patients with chronic pain (n=36) and healthy controls (n=12). Participants underwent a series of Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) procedures assessing responses to mechanical and thermal stimuli during two separate visits, in a randomized order. One visit consisted of standard, moderately painful QST procedures, while the other visit involved nonpainful analogs to these testing procedures. Blood samples were taken at baseline, and then for up to 2 hours after QST in order to study the time course of IL-6 responses. Results Results of multilevel analyses revealed that IL-6 responses increased across assessment time points in both visits (p<0.001). While patients with chronic pain and healthy controls did not differ in the magnitude of IL-6 responses, psychological factors influenced IL-6 trajectories only in the chronic pain group. Among patients, increases in catastrophizing over the course of the QST session were associated with elevated IL-6 responses only during the painful QST session (p<0.05). When controlling for anxiety, results indicated that the main multilevel model among patients remained significant (p<0.05). Conclusion Under specific conditions (eg, application of a painful stressor), catastrophizing may be associated with amplified proinflammatory responses in patients with persistent pain. These findings suggest that psychosocial interventions that reduce negative pain-related cognitions may benefit patients’ inflammatory profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has a role in the progression of the oral lichen planus (OLP). The aim of this meta-analysis study was to evaluate the salivary and serum TNF-α levels in patients with OLP. STUDY DESIGN We searched in the databases of PubMed/Medline, Science direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for studies reported from 1983 to 2016. All studies were checked for evaluation of salivary and serum levels of TNF-α in patients with OLP compared with healthy controls. RESULTS Twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis. The mean difference of 7 studies reporting salivary TNF-α levels in patients with OLP versus healthy controls was 25.90 pg/mL (95% confidence interval [CI] 15.31-36.49; P < .00001) and 7 studies reporting serum TNF-α levels was 1.65 pg/mL (95% CI -0.82 to 4.11; P = .19). CONCLUSIONS In patients with OLP, the higher levels of TNF-α in saliva compared with serum suggest that measurement of this marker in saliva may be more useful than in serum for determining diagnostic and therapeutic aims.

Abstract
Although the anxiolytic-like effects of Xiaoyaosan, a Chinese herbal formula, have been described in many previous studies, its underlying mechanism remains undefined. The cytokine tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and its closely associated janus kinase 2 (JAK2)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) signalling pathway regulate the neuro-inflammatory response in the brain, thus participating in the development of anxiety. Our purpose was to investigate whether the anxiolytic-like effects of Xiaoyaosan are related to the TNF-α/JAK2-STAT3 pathway in the hippocampus. We examined the effects of Xiaoyaosan on behaviours exhibited in the elevated plus maze test, open field test and novelty-suppressed feeding test as well as hippocampal neuron damage and changes in the TNF-α/JAK2-STAT3 pathway in a rat model of chronic immobilization stress (CIS)-induced anxiety. Xiaoyaosan exerts anxiolytic-like effects on CIS-induced anxiety, with a significant alleviation of anxiety-like behaviours, an attenuation of hippocampal neuron damage, and a reversal of the activation of the TNF-α/JAK2-STAT3 pathway in the hippocampus that are similar to the effects of the JAK2 antagonist AG490. However, Xiaoyaosan and AG490 failed to effectively regulate apoptosis-related factors, including Bax and Caspase-3. These results suggest that Xiaoyaosan attenuates stress-induced anxiety behaviours by down-regulating the TNF-α/JAK2-STAT3 pathway in the rat hippocampus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Corylus avellana L. (hazelnut) is known to be a delicious and nutritious food. This study was carried out to evaluate the use of hazelnut as a therapy for memory impairment because in Iranian traditional medicine, it is recommended for those suffering from a particular type of dementia, with symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. METHODS In this study, rats were fed with hazelnut kernel [(without skin) 800 mg/kg/day] during 1 week before stereotaxic surgery to 24 hours before behavioral testing (in general, for 16 consecutive days) and the effect of hazelnut eating on memory, anxiety, neuroinflammation and apoptosis was assessed in the amyloid beta-injected rat. RESULTS The results of this study showed that feeding with hazelnut improved memory, (which was examined by using Y-maze test and shuttle box apparatus), and reduced anxiety-related behavior, that was evaluated using elevated plus maze. Also, western blotting analysis of cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein, and caspase-3 showed that hazelnut has an ameliorating effect on the neuroinflammation and apoptosis caused by Aβ. DISCUSSION These findings suggest that hazelnut, as a dietary supplement, improves healthy aging and could be a beneficial diet for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
The concept of food addiction (FA) is a potentially important contributing factor to the development of obesity in the general population; however, little is known about the hormonal and dietary differences between obesity with and without FA. Therefore, the aim of our study was to explore potential biomarkers, including various hormones and neuropeptides, which regulate appetite and metabolism, and dietary components that could potentially differentiate obesity with and without FA. Of the 737 adults recruited from the general Newfoundland population, 58 food-addicted and non-food-addicted overweight/obese individuals (FAO, NFO) matched for age, sex, BMI and physical activity were selected. A total of 34 neuropeptides, gut hormones, pituitary polypeptide hormones and adipokines were measured in fasting serum. We found that the FAO group had lower levels of TSH, TNF-α and amylin, but higher levels of prolactin, as compared to NFO group. The total calorie intake (per kg body weight), the dietary intake of fat (per g/kg body weight, per BMI and per percentage of trunk fat) and the percent calorie intake from fat and carbohydrates (g/kg) was higher in the FAO group compared to the NFO group. The FAO subjects consumed more sugar, minerals (including sodium, potassium, calcium and selenium), fat and its components (such as saturated, monounsaturated and trans fat), omega 3 and 6, vitamin D and gamma-tocopherol compared to the NFO group. To our knowledge, this is the first study indicating possible differences in hormonal levels and micro-nutrient intakes between obese individuals classified with and without food addiction. The findings provide insights into the mechanisms by which FA could contribute to obesity.

Abstract
Multiple studies have demonstrated an association between cigarette smoking and increased anxiety symptoms or disorders, with early life exposures potentially predisposing to enhanced anxiety responses in later life. Explanatory models support a potential role for neurotransmitter systems, inflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neurotrophins and neurogenesis, and epigenetic effects, in anxiety pathogenesis. All of these pathways are affected by exposure to cigarette smoke components, including nicotine and free radicals. This review critically examines and summarizes the literature exploring the role of these systems in increased anxiety and how exposure to cigarette smoke may contribute to this pathology at a biological level. Further, this review explores the effects of cigarette smoke on normal neurodevelopment and anxiety control, suggesting how exposure in early life (prenatal, infancy, and adolescence) may predispose to higher anxiety in later life. A large heterogenous literature was reviewed that detailed the association between cigarette smoking and anxiety symptoms and disorders with structural brain changes, inflammation, and cell-mediated immune markers, markers of oxidative and nitrosative stress, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter systems, neurotrophins and neurogenesis. Some preliminary data were found for potential epigenetic effects. The literature provides some support for a potential interaction between cigarette smoking, anxiety symptoms and disorders, and the above pathways; however, limitations exist particularly in delineating causative effects. The literature also provides insight into potential effects of cigarette smoke, in particular nicotine, on neurodevelopment. The potential treatment implications of these findings are discussed in regards to future therapeutic targets for anxiety. The aforementioned pathways may help mediate increased anxiety seen in people who smoke. Further research into the specific actions of nicotine and other cigarette components on these pathways, and how these pathways interact, may provide insights that lead to new treatment for anxiety and a greater understanding of anxiety pathogenesis.

Regular physical activity exerts positive effects on anxiety disorder symptoms, although the biological mechanisms underpinning this effect are incompletely understood. Numerous lines of evidence support inflammation and oxidative and nitrogen stress (O&NS) as important in the pathogenesis of mood and anxiety disorders, and physical activity is known to influence these same pathways. This paper reviews the inter-relationships between anxiety disorders, physical activity and inflammation and O&NS, to explore whether modulation of inflammation and O&NS may in part underpin the positive effect of physical activity on anxiety disorders. Numerous studies support the notion that physical activity operates as an anti-inflammatory and anti-O&NS agent which potentially exerts positive effects on neuroplasticity, the expression of neurotrophins and normal neuronal functions. These effects may therefore influence the expression and evolution of anxiety disorders. Further exploration of this area may elicit a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders, and inform the development of integrated programmes including PA specifically suited to the treatment and prevention of anxiety disorders and symptoms.

Abstract
Stress is a constant factor in today's fastpaced life that can jeopardize our health if left unchecked. It is only in the last half century that the role of stress in every ailment from the common cold to AIDS has been emphasized, and the mechanisms involved in this process have been studied. Stress influences the immune response presumably through the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis, hypothalamic pituitary-gonadal axis, and the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary system. Various neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, hormones, and cytokines mediate these complex bidirectional interactions between the central nervous system (CNS) and the immune system. The effects of stress on the immune responses result in alterations in the number of immune cells and cytokine dysregulation. Various stress management strategies such as meditation, yoga, hypnosis, and muscle relaxation have been shown to reduce the psychological and physiological effects of stress in cancers and HIV infection. This review aims to discuss the effect of stress on the immune system and examine how relaxation techniques such as Yoga and meditation could regulate the cytokine levels and hence, the immune responses during stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a longstanding discussion that prolonged psychological stress can have negative somatic effects, especially in respect to endocrinological and immunological changes. Yet, the clinical significance of these findings is still unclear. Patients with prolonged stress should show more signs and symptoms of related illnesses. AIM The question we like to answer in this study is: are laboratory measures of global health suited to assess, discriminate or predict chronic psychological stress effects on biological systems? METHODS Included were 50 inpatients who were suffering from post-traumatic embitterment disorder (PTED), a condition that causes persistent and intense psychological distress. They were compared with a group of 50 matched control patients with unselected psychosomatic disorders but no immediate stress and strain. Gender distribution and age were the same in both samples because of the matching (60% women; mean age: 49 years). PTED patients had an average duration of illness of 31.7 (±35.5) months. In the SCL-90 they showed an average GSI score of 1.13 (±0.55) compared with 0.74 (±0.50) in the controls, as indicator of their increased psychological strain. Between groups, we compared the results of 24 laboratory tests, which can be seen as indicators of functioning of all important body systems. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the results of laboratory tests between groups and especially no indicators for different rates of immunological or inflammatory illnesses. CONCLUSION Laboratory measures of global health may not be suited to assess, discriminate or predict psychological chronic stress effects on important biological systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the influence of iron supplementation on brain oxidative stress and antioxidase activity in psychologically stressed rats. METHODS Rats were maintained on diets with different iron doses for 1 wk, and all other constituents of the diet were equated exactly according to the AIN-93-G diet. At the end of the experimental period, rats were sacrificed and brains were collected. To evaluate the effect of iron consumption, serum iron, apparent iron absorption, levels of iron concentration, lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, and superoxide dismutase activities of brains were measured. RESULTS Iron overload significantly elevated the level of iron content and malonaldehyde in rat brain, especially in the psychologically stressed group. Apparent iron absorption was decreased by increased iron supplementation in rats treated with psychological stress more than in control rats. Similarly, iron overload decreased superoxide dismutase activity and apparent iron absorption more significantly in psychologically stressed rats than in controls. Reduced glutathione level varied with diet, increasing in rats on a moderately high-iron diet but decreasing in rats on a extremely high-level iron diet. CONCLUSION These results demonstrated that iron overload augments brain oxidative stress status and aggravates the decrease of apparent iron absorption in a rat model of psychological stress.

Abstract
Stressful events and reminders of such events may influence circulating cytokine levels, just as they influence several neuroendocrine processes. However, these cytokine changes may vary with the severity and chronicity of the stressor experienced, as well as the specific mood responses that participants express. In the present investigation, women in abusive or non-abusive dating relationship (N=75) read a script about an abusive or non-abusive relationship and then reported their mood states, followed by the collection of a single blood sample 30 min later. The abused women who read the abuse-related script reported greater anger, sadness, shame, and anxiety than did the non-abused women. In non-abused women greater levels of anger and sadness, but not shame or anxiety, were associated with higher levels of the proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as the anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10, irrespective of whether they had read a script regarding an abusive relationship or a neutral script. In contrast, among abused women shown a neutral script, neither IL-6 nor IL-10 levels were related to their anger and sadness, whereas mood levels following the reading of a script regarding abuse were directly related to IL-6, although the extent of the association was lower than that evident in non-abused women. Levels of IL-10 in the abused women, unlike their non-abused counterparts, did not vary with mood state. These data suggest that cytokine levels and the relative balance of IL-6 and IL-10 ordinarily are associated with specific moods, but this relationship is not apparent among women in a chronic stress state.

Abstract
Anxiety confers increased risk for inflammatory diseases, and elevated inflammatory activity in anxious individuals may contribute to this increased risk. One complication, however, is that anxiety could be associated with inflammatory activity either through a specific anxiety pathway or through a more general negative emotionality pathway. To investigate, we measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol, the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the systemic inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as depression and neuroticism, in clinically anxious and non-anxious adults. Compared with non-anxious participants, clinically anxious participants exhibited significantly lower levels of morning cortisol and significantly higher levels of IL-6, independent of age, sex, and depressive symptoms. These group differences were robust when controlling for neuroticism. Conversely, the groups had equivalent levels of CRP in all analyses. Results are indicative of anxiety-specific effects on inflammatory activity, and highlight a pathway by which anxiety may increase risk for inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
This investigation extended prior work by determining if stress and body mass index (BMI) contributed independently to tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels among prepubescent Latino children and if sex and family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) modified these relationships. Data were collected in South Florida from 112 nondiabetic school-aged Hispanic children, of whom 43.8% were obese (BMI >/= 95th percentile) and 51.8% presented with a family history of T2DM. Stressful life events were assessed via parental report using a life events scale. Plasma TNF-alpha levels were determined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relative contributions of stress and BMI with TNF-alpha levels and the potential interaction effects of sex and family history of T2DM were analyzed with multiple linear regression analyses. Stress and BMI each accounted for a significant proportion of the unique variance associated with TNF-alpha. The association between stress and TNF-alpha was not modified by sex or family history of T2DM. These findings implicate BMI and stress as independent determinants of TNF-alpha (an inflammatory cytokine and adipocytokine) among Latino children. Future investigations should examine the potential roles of exercise, nutritional status, age, and growth hormone in explicating the relationship between TNF-alpha production and psychosocial distress and risk for infection among obese children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic heart failure (CHF) is an increasingly prevalent condition with high mortality and morbidity rates. This review examines the role of depression, anxiety, and social support on prognosis in CHF. METHOD AND RESULTS Prospective studies that examined mortality as an outcome, and assessed depression, anxiety, or social support as associates were included. Methodological qualities were evaluated. In total, 25 studies were identified. Concerning depression, 6 of 15 studies of inpatients, 10 of 11 studies of outpatients, and 1 study of a mixed sample found associations between depression and prognosis, with greater associations rendered by depressive symptomatology in outpatients. Anxiety was not associated with prognosis in one inpatient study and one outpatient study. There was a univariable trend in one outpatient study for anxiety to be associated with prognosis. In two of six studies of inpatients and in two of four studies of outpatients, social support was associated with prognosis. On the basis of methodological quality, studies on depression showed mixed results, no conclusions could be drawn for anxiety because this association was not investigated soundly, and the quality of the social network was not associated with outcome. CONCLUSION Evidence suggests that depressive symptoms and social support might be associated with prognosis in CHF outpatients, independently of biomedical risk factors. With respect to anxiety, no conclusions can be drawn. Future studies are warranted to disentangle associations with psychological factors.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that blood levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and catecholamine, and cytokines are related to not only to depressive, suicidal, and anxious states but also to depression-associated personality traits. Psychological job stress is well known to lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety. In the present study, we examined effects of psychological job stress on serum levels of BDNF and plasma levels of catecholamine metabolites, and cytokines in healthy volunteers (n=106, male/female=42/64, age=36+/-12 yr) working in a hospital setting. The values (mean+/-SD) of scores for stress items in the Stress and Arousal Check List (s-SACL), plasma MHPG levels, and, serum BDNF levels in all participants were 7.2+/-3.3, 5.2+/-3.4 ng/mL, and 23.3+/-14.7 ng/mL, respectively. A negative correlation was found between scores for s-SACL and serum BDNF levels (rho=-0.211, p=0.022). A positive correlation was also found between scores on the s-SACL and plasma levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) (rho=0.416, p=0.01), but not homovanillic acid (HVA). No relationship was found between s-SACL scores and plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha). These results suggest that serum BDNF levels and plasma MHPG levels might be biological markers reflective of psychological job stress in hospital employees.
