Heavy metal spatial variability and historical changes in the Yangtze River estuary and North Jiangsu tidal flat

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in riverine sediments along the East China Sea: A large-scale integrated analysis

This study comprehensively assesses spatial distribution, pollution levels, and potential sources of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments across multiple river systems along the coastal area of the East China Sea. Copper in Qiantang River and Xiangshan Bay showed higher concentations and exceeded the threshold effect value, while the higher content of Lead was mainly found in the Saijiang River, Oujiang River, and Minjiang River. Heavy metal(loid)s in the alluvium of Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, and Yangtze River showed low to moderate pollution levels, with Cd posing the highest ecological risk, followed by Hg. Meanwhile, Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, Yangtze River, and Oujiang River exhibited considerable to moderate ecological risks and low toxic risk. PMF model analysis results reveal that concentrations of Cr, Ni, and As were closely related with natural geogenic input (36.56 %), while industrial and traffic activities (48.77 %) were primary source of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg, and main source of Cd was agricultural emissions (14.67 %).

Health risk assessment of aerosol particles (PM2.5 and PM10) during winter crop at the agricultural site of Delhi, India

For the last few decades, air pollution in developing country like India is increasing, and it is a matter of huge concern due to its associated human health impacts. In this region, the burgeoning population, escalating urbanization and industrialization, has been cited as the major reason for such a high air pollution. The present study was carried out for health risk assessment of aerosol particles (PM10 and PM2.5) and its associated heavy metals of an agriculture farm site at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) considered to be green urban area in Delhi, India. The concentrations of both PM10 and PM2.5 varied significantly from 136 to 177 µg/m3 and 56 to 162 µg/m3, respectively at the site. In the present case, the highest PM10 and PM2.5 levels were reported in January, followed by December. The levels of ambient PM10 and PM2.5 are influenced by wind prevailing meteorology. These levels of PM10 and PM2.5 are more than the permissible limits of WHO guidelines of 15 and 5 µg/m3, respectively, thereby leading to high aerosol loadings specifically in winters. The PM concentration of the atmosphere was found to be negatively correlated with temperature during the sampling period. The concentrations of surface ozone O3 and NOx in the present study were observed to be high in February and March, respectively. The increasing air pollution in the city of Delhi poses a great risk to the human health, as the particulate matter loaded with heavy metals can enter humans via different pathways, viz., ingestion, inhalation, and absorption through skin. The mean hazard index for metals (Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Cr, and Ni) was observed within the acceptable limit (HI < 1), thereby indicating negligible non-carcinogenic effects to residing population. The carcinogenic risk assessment was conducted for Cd, Pb, and As only, as the concentrations for other metals were found to be quite low. The carcinogenic risk values were also within the limits of USEPA standards, indicating no carcinogenic risks to the health of children and adults residing near the site. This information about the PM pollution at the agricultural site and health risk assessment will serve as a baseline data in assessment of human health impacts due to air pollution at the local scale and can be used for development of mitigation strategies for tackling air pollution.

Source-to-sink process and risk assessment of heavy metals for the surface sediment in the northern South China Sea

Heavy metal input from the coastal urbanization and industrialization and their potential ecological risks have been a great concern in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). Our results showed that the surface sediments in the NSCS mainly include sand, silt, and sandy silt. CaO and Sr are fixed in the fine-grained biogenic calcareous debris. Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Ba, and REE are the least contaminated and mainly of felsic crustal origin, with the supply largely from the Han and Pearl River estuaries in the Eastern and Western NSCS, respectively. Enrichment in Cu-Pb-Zn might be from both natural and anthropogenic inputs, and their contamination is generally at a low-risk level. As-Cd accumulation is mainly from anthropogenic provenance related to the aerosol precipitation. The anthropogenic As-Cd contamination resulted both from the industrial/urbanized discharge along the Guangdong Eastern Coastal and the agricultural/aquafarming activities along the Moyang River Estuary-Hainan Eastern Coastal.

Spatiotemporal variations of heavy metal historical accumulation records and their influencing mechanisms in the Yangtze River Estuary

Complex transformations of heavy metals in the mega-river-estuary continuum limit our understanding of their pollution history. This study investigated sedimentary compositions of heavy metals, major elements, total organic carbon, grain size, and radionuclides to study spatiotemporal variations in heavy metal accumulation patterns and their controlling mechanisms in four sediment cores (E1-E4) from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). Results show that only E3 in the distal YRE front mirrors well the heavy metal pollution history due to its continuous deposition in a stable sedimentary environment, while E1 and E2 record the influence of riverine and estuarine projects and processes apparently. E1 in the proximal YRE front registers intense human disturbance through sediment dredging and dumping activities to produce a thick layer of abnormal low 210Pbex and minor heavy metal concentrations. E2 in the intermediate YRE front demonstrates the recently increasing influence of reduced sediment discharge by its upcore coarsening trend with decreased heavy metal concentrations. Flood and storm events left different imprints in core sediments of E2 and E3 by their coarse stratal units with fewer heavy metal concentrations. The source analysis indicates that heavy metals in estuarine sediments mainly come from natural processes but are significantly affected by human activities. A direct linkage of the heavy metal accumulation history with the socioeconomic development in recent decades is found by a comparison study of core data from the tidal river to the estuary, albeit with a remarkable spatiotemporal difference, which is jointly determined by grain size, offshore distance, hydrodynamic condition, depositional status, and sedimentation rate besides estuarine processes. This warns us to carefully interpret the heavy metal history from single or sparse core data in a mega estuary system with intense natural forces and human disturbances analogous to the YRE.

Anthropogenic impacts on the temporal variation of heavy metals in Daya Bay (South China)

A detailed study of a sediment core from Daya Bay (South China) has revealed three stages of heavy metal deposition over the past century. Prior to the 1980s, heavy metal concentrations were low with limited influence by human activities. From the 1980s to 2000, metal pollution intensified, and anthropogenic activities, such as oil and petrochemical industries, and fuel combustion, had the greatest direct influence on Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations, whereas atmospheric deposition and mariculture were also contributors to the continued increase in Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ni. Since the year 2000, heavy metal concentration has declined and stabilized. It is noteworthy that anthropogenic input of Cu and Pb is ongoing and may result in a moderate pollution risk. Both modified pollution index (MPI) and modified ecological risk (MRI) consistently indicate that the ecological risk in terms of heavy metals in Daya Bay has remained moderate over the past 70 years.

The geochemical and environmental characteristics of trace metals in surface sediments of the river estuarine mouths around the Taiwan Island and the Taiwan Strait

The trace metals species in surface sediments of the Taiwanese river estuarine mouths and the Taiwan Strait were examined by sequential extraction method. Based on the metal species present in sediments, trace metals can be divided into three groups: (1) Co, Cr, Fe, Ni and Zn; (2) Cu and Hg; and (3) Mn and Pb. The total concentrations of trace metals in the first two groups are dominated by the residual fraction. While, Cu and Hg their organic species also contributes a significant percentage and reduces the residual fraction portion. Lead and Mn are dominated by the labile fraction. The total metal concentrations in the analyzed sediments seem to be influenced by Fe oxides, TOC and grain size. The metals contamination status assessed by three environmental indices suggests that the analyzed sediments are minor contaminated by trace metals, with a few exceptions of Cu and Hg at some stations.

Spatial variation, sources, and potential ecological risk of metals in sediment in the northern South China Sea

Heavy metals are of great concern to humans because of their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. A study on the spatial variation, sources, and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in the coastal sedimentary environment are helpful to clarify the pollution history of aquatic systems and effectively manage and control heavy metal pollution. However, most studies are limited to the Pearl River Estuary region. To investigate the spatial distribution characteristics, sources, and potential ecological risks of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Sn, Zn, As, Cd), a total of 41 sediment samples from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) region were analyzed. The results show that Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn have similar distribution patterns and their migration path in the coastal area is mainly controlled by the coastal current in western Guangdong. Meanwhile, these metals also have similar sources, i.e. natural weathering products. The distribution patterns of Cr, Sn, Cd, and As are not affected by the coastal current, and the sources of these metals are not only natural weathering products but also human inputs such as electroplating and electronic industries and runoff from agricultural sites. Agricultural activities, coal-burning activities, and aerosol precipitation may be another important source of human activities for As. More than half (65.9 %) of the sampling sites were categorized as having low potential ecological risk, 24.4 % for moderate risk, 7.3 % for considerable risk, and 2.4 % for high potential ecological risk, and the potential ecological risk metals of Cr, Cd, and As in NSCS should be more attention.

Coastal reclamation mediates heavy metal fractions and ecological risk in saltmarsh sediments of northern Jiangsu Province, China

Coastal reclamation has created enormous extra land for the rapidly growing economy, but it has also caused serious environmental pollution problems and threatened the sustainable development of coastal areas. However, there are few studies focusing on the distribution patterns, geochemical speciation and ecological risks of heavy metals along the land-to-sea belt, as well as the differences between reclamation and non-reclamation. Here, we collected 69 sediment samples from four sediment types along the land-to-sea sampling belts in the reclaimed and non-reclaimed tidal flats of Jiangsu, China. Geochemical speciation and contents of heavy metals were determined to investigate their spatial distributions, ecological risks and effect factors. Results showed that As, Cd, Cr and Ni in the sediments posed considerable or moderate ecological risk according to the Ontario guidelines and sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) of USEPA, but they were lower than the SQGs of China. Higher geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index suggested that the sediments were moderately to heavily polluted by Cd and As. Generally, reclaimed sediments exhibited higher metal pollution levels. Additionally, reclaimed areas showed a unimodal pattern of metal content along the direction of land-to-sea, suggesting that Spartina alterniflora could accelerate the deposition and accumulation of metal pollutants caused by reclamation, and ultimately control the transfer of terrigenous metals to marine environment. We found that residual fraction was the dominant geochemical fraction for the metals determined. Reclamation processes have changed the composition of heavy metal fractions, especially Cd, Pb, Zn, and Ni. Approximately 20% of Cd existed in the acid extractable/exchangeable fraction and posed medium ecological risk according to the risk assessment code. The principal component analysis and correlation matrix further indicate that organic matter and particle size of sediment could be the major factors regulating the metal distribution, and Cd and Zn might be anthropogenic sources.

Metals and organic matter baselines in sediments in a cross-shelf gradient at Abrolhos Bank, SW Atlantic

The present study performed geochemical fractioning of major and minor elements in a cross-shelf gradient of the Abrolhos Bank, where the largest and most diverse coral reefs in the South Atlantic are concentrated. The fractioning was performed using sequential extractions to determine the degree of availability and toxicity of the elements. The mobility pattern of the elements investigated were in the following order: Ca > Mn > Pb > Cr > Zn > Fe > V > Cu > Ba>Al > Ni > Ti. For elements, such as (Ti, Ni, Al, Ba, Cu, V, Fe, Zn, Cr, Pb), the highest concentrations were in the residual phase at some sampling sites. As established by Environment Canada (Threshold Effect Level - TEL and Probable Effect Level - PEL), Ba, Cr, and Ni produced values higher than the limits, associated with higher concentrations of other elements. In addition, significant proportions of these elements were found in mobile phases in the same sites. Thus, more rigorous measures are critical to avoid alarming levels of chronic environmental pollution inside and outside protected areas of the region. To enhance the sustainability of the region, more effective enforcement is crucial to prevent anthropic contamination that may threaten its biodiversity. The results provide the baseline for future studies regarding the potential impacts of the breach of the tailings dam in the region of Mariana, Minas Gerais.

Levels and ecological risk of heavy metals in the surface sediments of tidal flats along the North Jiangsu coast, China

We investigated the contamination levels of nine heavy metals (Mn, Pb, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As) in 153 surface sediment samples collected along five tidal flats on the North Jiangsu coast, China. The spatial distributions of most heavy metals gradually decreased from the northern Sheyang region to the southern Jianggang region, while slightly increasing in the Rudong region. Principal component analysis indicated that Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As were mainly derived from the natural environment, V and Cr were mainly derived from human activities. Additionally, Mn and Pb influenced by both natural and human sources. The geo-accumulation index and the contamination factor indicated that heavy metal contamination in the sediments exhibited little to no pollution levels. The potential ecological risk index exhibiting low ecological risks. Meanwhile, the mean probable effect level quotient values indicating slight toxicity. Cr and Ni were the major contributors to toxicity.

Assessment of the transfer of heavy metals in seawater, sediment, biota samples and determination the baseline tissue concentrations of metals in marine organisms

The majority of tissue-specific environmental quality standards (EQSs) considering metal tolerance are prior to the chemical-specific EQSs in aquatic organisms. However, metal baseline levels in marine organisms were very scarce. We explored the correlation between Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn concentrations in water or sediments and those metal concentrations in marine organisms (crustacean, mollusc, and fish) by generalized additive models (GAMs) and executed a meta-analysis of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn contents in those three organisms by implementing cumulative frequency distribution analysis of individual metal distribution in a heavy metal-contaminated semi-enclosed Bay, China. Results showed that the average contents of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn were 0.042±0.01, 0.38±0.22, 1.72±0.65, 3.61±1.01, and 16.08±6.33 μg/L in water; 0.064±0.02, 0.42±0.04, 20.54±7.76, 28.97±3.90, and 96.74±35.11 μg/g dw in sediment; and 0.0049±0.0028, 0.52±0.28, 0.24±0.15, 11.05±6.95, and 21.12±4.47 μg/g dw in crustacean, 0.015±0.0087, 0.24±0.17, 0.08±0.02, 0.37±0.35, and 10.62±6.79 μg/g dw in mollusc; and 0.0038±0.0028, 0.065±0.05, 0.32±0.19, 2.01±0.59, and 16.04±4.97 μg/g dw in fish. The mercury content in mollusc presented a negative correlation with mercury content in sediment, while the content of other metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn) in organisms showed positive correlations with the content of those metals in water or sediment. We further obtained tissue-baseline-C5% in crustacean, mollusc, and fish which were 1.191, 3.341, and 0.014 μg/g dw for Cu; 0.013, 0.072, and 0.033 μg/g dw for Cd, 0.015, 0.027, and 0.052 μg/g dw for Pb; 9.515, 14.422, and 0.056 μg/g dw for Zn; and 0.0009, 0.004, and 0.0035 μg/g dw for Hg, respectively. However, there were no obvious relationships of the 4d-NOEC in laboratory toxicity tests with C5%, as well as C50% and 4d-LC50 or tolerance index a for Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Hg in organisms. Our results pointed out the controversy of laboratory sensitive species toxicity results for deriving chemical-specific EQSs with field studies. We advocated to set up the metal concentration baselines in aquatic organisms and further served the tissue-specific EQSs, which are essential basis for geochemical recordings, bio-monitoring, and semi-enclosed bay management in the world.

Vertical distribution of Pu in forest soil in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The ^239+240Pu and ¹³⁷Cs activities and ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratios in surface soil and soil core collected from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were investigated. The maximum of ^239+240Pu and ¹³⁷Cs activity concentrations in five soil cores were found in upper layers and have a same trend: the maximum followed by exponential decline. The ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratio ranged from 0.160 ± 0.009 to 0.212 ± 0.012, clarified that the plutonium mainly came from the global fallout and the contribution of Lop Nor test sites was negligible. In addition, the vertical profiles of radionuclides (²¹⁰Pb, ²³⁸U, ²³²Th, ²²⁶Ra, ⁴⁰K) have been studied and a high correlation has been found between them. The correlations of Pu between organic matter (OM) and heavy metals were also studied. Person Correlation Coefficients revealed Pu had significant positive correlations with organic matter and Cd, Cu, Co, Zn, but negative correlation with Tl. The results have important implication for further understanding of the sources, records and environmental impacts of global and regional nuclear activities, which expanded the database of Pu activity level and atom ratio in Chinese soil and established a foundation for future environmental risk assessment.

Heavy metal pollution and the risk from tidal flat reclamation in coastal areas of Jiangsu, China

Tidal flat is an important supplementary land resource. However, increasing tidal flat reclamation in China has resulted in severe environmental issues. Using single-metal pollution index and multi-metal Nemerow pollution index, this study aimed to evaluate the risks of heavy metal pollution among different tidal flat use types, including fish farm, farmland, pastoral land, industrial land, forest and unutilized land. The results indicated that, concentrations of all elements were higher than geochemical values; Cd posed the highest risk, followed by As and Ni. Fish farm created the highest risk, followed by farmland. Every one year increase in fish farming led to increases in sediment concentrations of Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn and As by 0.73, 1.25, 0.68, 0.41, 1.22 and 0.20 mg.kg^-1, respectively. Tidal flat reclamation in Jiangsu Province creates the risk of heavy metal pollution, and specific attention should be paid to the fodders and additives used in fish farming.

Mini review of trace metal contamination status in East China Sea sediment

This study reviewed the published papers and employed the guideline values of USEPA (ERL and ERM) and China (MSQ, Class I, II, III) to assess the contamination status of potential toxic metals in East China Sea sediment (ECS). The percentages of metal concentrations exceeding the ERL value follow the sequences: Ni (96%) > As(71%) > Cr(53%) > Cu (19%) > Zn (2.4%) > Hg (0.5%) > Pb (0.4%) > Cd (0%). The similar ranking is also seen for MSQ class I. All metal concentrations were less than the ERM value, except Ni of which value 10.3% exceeded the ERM value. The potentially ecological risk from these sedimentary metals could be reduced because they were mainly present in the residual fraction, which is not available for marine organisms. It seems that the Ni ERL value is too low (20.8. mg kg^-1), close to the value (18.6 mg kg^-1) of the upper continental crust, to obey.

Spatial distribution and vertical profile of heavy metals in marine sediments around Iran's special economic energy zone; Arsenic as an enriched contaminant

Surface sediments (n = 35) and a core sample around Pars Special Economic Energy Zone were analyzed to address spatiotemporal variations of heavy metals. Enrichment factors classified the elements as: (1) poorly enriched, geogenic elements (Co, Cr, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Ti, and V), (2) minimal enriched elements (Zn and Mg), (3) moderately enriched elements (Ag, Cd, Pb, Se, and Sr), and (4) significantly enriched element (As and Hg). The core profile showed that As, Hg, Ag, and Cd had considerable anthropogenic inventories. Arsenic levels were continuously increasing toward the top of the core and sedimentary cycling was not an effective factor on its enrichment. Pollution load index classified the area as a severely affected region and Risk Index values suggested that 57% of the sediments had a moderate potential risks. The mapping techniques proposed a polluted and hazardous patch at the entrance and center part of the Nayband Bay.

Changes in exoskeleton surface roughness and expression of chitinase genes in mud crab Macrophthalmus japonicus following heavy metal differences of estuary

Risk assessment of heavy metals is important for the health evaluation of inhabiting species in aquatic ecosystem. This study investigated whether chitin exoskeleton of mud crab Macrophthalmus japonicus is affected by heavy metals in estuary sediments in Korea. We compared heavy metal concentrations and analyzed the expression of M. japonicus chitinase genes, which play the crucial role in the formation of chitin exoskeleton. Concentrations of heavy metals were highly observed in crab body inhabiting Hampyeong among estuarine sites. High expressions of chitinase 1 were observed in crab gill and hepatopancreas from Myodo, which is the site with the lowest concentration of heavy metal in crab body. The surface roughness of the exoskeleton decreased with the increased concentration of heavy metals accumulated in the crab body. These results suggest that the total bioconcentration of heavy metals in crabs affected the expression of chitinase genes and changes in the exoskeleton surface roughness.

Historical trends of anthropogenic metals in sediments of Jiaozhou Bay over the last century

Reconstructing heavy metal historical trends are essential for better understanding anthropogenic impact on marine ecosystems. In this work, the ecological risk and sources of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in Jiaozhou Bay were studied and the anthropogenic metal emissions was also quantified. The ecological risk was mainly caused by Cd, As and Cu, which presented an increasing trend with increased anthropogenic activities since the 1950s. The statistical analysis show that Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn were primarily from natural sources. Cadmium and Mn might originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Arsenic and Pb were sourced from agricultural activities and atmospheric precipitation, respectively. The anthropogenic flux of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were 138, 586, 63, 66, 161, 35, 0.31 and 44 mg/m²/a since the 1950s. Over 40.0% of Cu and As were quantified from anthropogenic emissions since the 1950s.

Macrobenthic community characteristics and ecological health of a constructed intertidal oyster reef in the Yangtze Estuary, China

Development of substrate organisms (oysters, barnacles) and the health of a monitored oyster reef were investigated in the Yangtze Estuary. Very low salinity suppressed oyster survival. Nevertheless, middle- to high-salinity significantly increased the abundance and biomass of substrate organisms, and macrobenthos species and diversity. Long-term variation in substrate organisms was steady after a major fluctuation, yet the macrobenthic community structure lagged behind that of oysters. Overall, the oyster reef was in a healthy state. The M-AMBI results showed that its ecological status under high-salinity was better than medium-salinity conditions. Redundancy analysis indicated these results were associated with changes in water salinity and substrate factors. Taken together, our results suggest this constructed intertidal oyster reef has had a positive effect on the community and health status of macrobenthos in the Yangtze Estuary. Further, these ecological benefits increased going from medium- to high-salinity waters, but were generally absent under low salinity.

Intensive anthropogenic activities had affected Daya Bay in South China Sea since the 1980s: Evidence from heavy metal contaminations

Sediment geochemical characteristics were analyzed to assess how anthropogenic activities affected the Daya Bay, a subtropics bay adjacent to the most economically developed region of China. Vertical profiles of heavy metal contents and their enrichment factors indicated the development of Daya Bay environment in the past 100 years basically experienced three stages, which were closely consistent with the economic development. Before 1980s, the concentration of heavy metals was basically at the background level. Contamination of metals, particularly for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb, generally began in mid-1980s and became serious in 2000s. However, after late-2000s, the sediment quality had been radically improved. Heavy metals in nearshore sediment of Daya Bay were all closely related with import of anthropogenic and/or terrestrial material, whereas those in offshore were likely to be related with joint influence from the anthropogenic activities and the natural processes.

Speciation of heavy metals in different grain sizes of Jiaozhou Bay sediments: Bioavailability, ecological risk assessment and source analysis on a centennial timescale

Heavy metal contamination is an essential indicator of environmental health. In this work, one sediment core was used for the analysis of the speciation of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in Jiaozhou Bay sediments with different grain sizes. The bioavailability, sources and ecological risk of heavy metals were also assessed on a centennial timescale. Heavy metals were enriched in grain sizes of < 63µm and were predominantly present in residual phases. Moreover, the mobility sequence based on the sum of the first three phases (for grain sizes of < 63µm) was Mn > Pb > Cd > Zn > Cu >Ni > Cr > As. Enrichment factors (EF) indicated that heavy metals in Jiaozhou Bay presented from no enrichment to minor enrichment. The potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated that Jiaozhou Bay had been suffering from a low ecological risk and presented an increasing trend since 1940s owing to the increase of anthropogenic activities. The source analysis indicated that natural sources were primary sources of heavy metals in Jiaozhou Bay and anthropogenic sources of heavy metals presented an increasing trend since 1940s. The principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu and Pb were primarily derived from natural sources and that Zn and Cd were influenced by shipbuilding industry. Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb may originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. As may be influenced by agricultural activities. Moreover, heavy metals in sediments of Jiaozhou Bay were clearly influenced by atmospheric deposition and river input.

Distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, soils, and plants around Gol-E-Gohar iron mine, a case study in Iran

This study investigated the concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) including Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn in 102 soils (in the Near and Far areas of the mine), 7 tailings, and 60 plant samples (shoots and roots of Artemisia sieberi and Zygophylum species) collected at the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore mine in Iran. The elemental concentrations in tailings and soil samples (in Near and Far areas) varied between 7.4 and 35.8 mg kg^-1 for As (with a mean of 25.39 mg kg^-1 for tailings), 7.9 and 261.5 mg kg^-1 (mean 189.83 mg kg^-1 for tailings) for Co, 17.7 and 885.03 mg kg^-1 (mean 472.77 mg kg^-1 for tailings) for Cu, 12,500 and 400,000 mg kg^-1 (mean 120,642.86 mg kg^-1 for tailings) for Fe, and 28.1 and 278.1 mg kg^-1 (mean 150.29 mg kg^-1 for tailings) for Ni. A number of physicochemical parameters and pollution index for soils were determined around the mine. Sequential extractions of tailings and soil samples indicated that Fe, Cr, and Co were the least mobile and that Mn, Zn, Cu, and As were potentially available for plants uptake. Similar to soil, the concentration of Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Zn in plant samples decreased with the distance from the mining/processing areas. Data on plants showed that metal concentrations in shoots usually exceeded those in roots and varied significantly between the two investigated species (Artemisia sieberi > Zygophylum). All the reported results suggest that the soil and plants near the iron ore mine are contaminated with PTEs and that they can be potentially dispersed in the environment via aerosol transport and deposition.

An approach based on M-AMBI for assessing benthic ecological status of a broad intertidal zone: A case study in the Jiangsu intertidal zone, China

Intensive anthropogenic activities have a serious negative effect on the Jiangsu coastal area of China, especially on the distinctive intertidal zone. Humans are trying to eliminate this effect by taking protection and eco-compensation measures. However, when trying to determine the ecological status and quantify the anthropogenic impact for this area, the complex relationship between ecosystems and environmental stress leads to difficulties in reflecting general environmental quality. This study assessed the benthic ecological status of 10 transects (three stations/transect) across six different typologies over six years (2007, 2009-2013) in the Jiangsu intertidal zone. A unitary assessment of each transect was conducted using the multivariate AZTI Marine Biotic Index (M-AMBI), along with a radar chart (and its parameters). In the Jiangsu intertidal zone, the ecological status was noted as good or moderate at most sampling stations. Among the six assessed years, 2010 had the highest ecological status, while 2007 had the lowest. As for transects, transect 1 had the highest ratings, and transect 3 had the lowest ratings. Various stresses and advantageous human intervention and contributed to the ecological status for the different areas. The M-AMBI could be used in the future as a suitable index to assess the benthic ecological status of the Jiangsu intertidal zone. In addition, the new unitary method validated in this study could be used to assess ecosystems with several small biotopes, while accurately reflecting environmental quality.

Spatial distribution, risk assessment and source identification of heavy metals in sediments of the Yangtze River Estuary, China

The aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution, potential risks and sources of seven heavy metals in sediments of the Yangtze River Estuary. Analyses of 55 sediment samples revealed that the distributions of metals within the YRE were determined by the combined effects of their sources, hydrodynamic conditions, pH and Eh. According to the geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and sediment quality guidelines, Pb, Cd and Cr were present at low levels of pollution, with Cd posing the largest ecological risk. Positive Factor Matrix (PMF) results indicated that Hg, Zn, As, Pb and Cr mainly originated from natural geological background sources, while Cu originated from anthropogenic activities and atmospheric deposition was the source of Cd. These three sources contributed to 53.0%, 32.8% and 14.2%, respectively of total heavy metal concentrations. These results suggest that reducing the emission of Cd would promote a reduction of potential risks in sediments of the YRE.

Identification of Pb sources using Pb isotopic compositions in the core sediments from Western Xiamen Bay, China

Pb concentrations and Pb isotopic compositions (total and acid-extractable) in the core sediments collected from Western Xiamen Bay, China, were determined to investigate the Pb pollution history and trace the Pb sources. Pb concentration showed an increasing trend (from 40.3 to 64.2mgkg^-1) with obvious fluctuation from 1967 to 2013, reflected by the core sediments. The enrichment factors of Pb were between 2 and 5, indicating a moderate enrichment. The relative contributions of Pb-Zn deposit and parent material to total Pb in the core sediments were 51%-62% and 38%-49%, respectively. Acid-extractable Pb isotopic signature was more sensitive than total Pb isotopic signature in identifying anthropogenic Pb sources due to the substantial variability of acid-extractable Pb isotopic ratios exhibited in the core sediments. Based on the acid-extractable Pb isotopic ratios, Pb-Zn deposit and industrial emission were regarded as the main anthropogenic Pb contributors.

Seasonal distribution and geochemical fractionation of heavy metals from surface sediment in a tropical estuary of Jeneberang River, Indonesia

Lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) concentrations from surface sediments were determined at 17 stations in riverine, estuarine, and marine environments during the wet and dry seasons. The geochemical fractionations were obtained by a sequential extraction procedure in five geochemical forms: exchangeable, bound to carbonate, iron-manganese oxide, organic, and residual fractions. The concentrations of Pb and Zn in the water were higher during the wet season than the dry season and higher in the riverine and marine samples than the estuarine samples. Following geochemical fractionation, the metals were found mainly in the residual fraction. The results indicated that the concentrations were influenced by season, with the sources of Pb and Zn derived mainly from rivers and natural sources. The contamination status in the estuary of the Jeneberang River was classified as weak to moderate pollution and the risk level to aquatic biota attributed was no risk to low risk.

Effects of cadmium on lipid metabolism in female estuarine crab, Chiromantes dehaani

Due to the nature of their habitat, which contains a high level of pollutants, estuarine crabs are at great risk of exposure to contaminants such as cadmium. Thus, in this study, the effects of cadmium on lipid metabolism were investigated in estuarine crab Chiromantes dehaani. Adult female estuarine crabs were randomly exposed to 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 1mg/L of CdCl2 for 7, 14 and 21days, after which the lipid contents of the hepatopancreas and ovary were measured. Also, the substance contents and the activities of the enzyme in lipid digestion, lipid synthesis and lipid transport metabolism were analyzed. The results showed that the lipid contents in the hepatopancreas and ovary of the exposed crabs decreased after prolonged exposure to cadmium compared to the control. The lipase activity decreased while the activities of fatty acid synthase and acetyl coenzyme A in the hepatopancreas increased on day 7 but decreased on days 14 and 21. Moreover, the change in non-esterified fatty acid level was similar to fatty acid synthase. The level of low-density lipoprotein increased in the exposed crabs compared to the control group while the level of high-density lipoprotein and the activity of lipoprotein lipase decreased at a higher concentration of cadmium and longer exposure time. These observations suggest that cadmium decreases the lipid content by weakening the ability of digestion, transportation and synthase of lipid, thus affecting hepatopancreas and ovary indices.
