Occurrence, distribution, air-seawater exchange and atmospheric deposition of organophosphate esters (OPEs) from the Northwestern Pacific to the Arctic Ocean

Organophosphate ester in surface water of the Pearl River and South China Sea, China: Spatial variations and ecological risks

This study focused on investigating the concentrations, compositional profiles, partitioning behaviors and spatial variations of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the Pearl River (PR), South China Sea (SCS) region, to evaluate their environmental risks. ∑OPEs concentrations in the surface water of the PR ranged from 117.5 to 854.8 ng/L in the dissolved phase and from 0.5 to 13.3 ng/L in the suspended particulate matter. In the surface seawaters of the northern and western parts of the SCS, ∑OPEs concentrations were 1.3-17.6 ng/L (mean: 6.7 ± 5.2) and 2.3-24.4 ng/L (mean: 7.6 ± 5.5), respectively. The percentage of chlorinated OPEs in surface water samples from the PR to the SCS was 79 ± 15%. Tripentyl phosphate (TPeP) (average: 28.3%) and triphenylphosphate (TPhP) (average: 9.6%) exhibited significant particulate fraction. A significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between salt concentration and OPE congeners in seawater suggested that river runoff predominantly introduced OPEs into the coastal waters of the SCS. The findings also showed higher levels of OPEs in the PR and estuary than in offshore waters. The OPE loading from the PR into the SCS was estimated to be ∼119 t y-1. The presence of TCEP (RQmax = 2.1), TnBP (RQmax = 0.48) and TPhP (RQmax = 0.3) in PR water samples pose a high risk to aquatic organisms, whereas OPEs (RQ < 0.1) in SCS water samples do not pose a threat to aquatic organisms. This research emphasizes the environmental fate and impact of OPEs on surface waters of the PR and SCS.

Organophosphate esters in water and air: A minireview of their sources, occurrence, and air-water exchange

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have received considerable attention in environmental research due to their extensive production, wide-ranging applications, prevalent presence, potential for bioaccumulation, and associated ecological and health concerns. Low efficiency of OPE removal results in the effluents of wastewater treatment plants emerging as a significant contributor to OPE contamination. Their notable solubility and mobility give OPEs the potential to be transported to coastal ecosystems via river discharge and atmospheric deposition. Previous research has indicated that OPEs have been widely detected in the atmosphere and water bodies. Atmospheric deposition across air-water exchange is the main input route for OPEs into the environment and ecosystems. The main processes that contribute to air-water exchange is air-water diffusion, dry deposition, wet deposition, and the air-water volatilization process. The present minireview links together the source, occurrence, and exchange of OPEs in water and air, integrates the occurrence and profile data, and summarizes their air-water exchange in the environment.

Tracing Organophosphate Ester Pollutants in Hadal Trenches─Distribution, Possible Origins, and Transport Mechanisms

Unraveling the mysterious pathways of pollutants to the deepest oceanic realms holds critical importance for assessing the integrity of remote marine ecosystems. This study tracks the transport of pollutants into the depths of the oceans, a key step in protecting the sanctity of these least explored ecosystems. By analyzing hadal trench samples from the Mariana, Mussau, and New Britain trenches, we found the widespread distribution of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants but a complex transport pattern for the OPE in these regions. In the Mariana Trench seawater column, OPE concentrations range between 17.4 and 102 ng L-1, with peaks at depths of 500 and 4000 m, which may be linked to Equatorial Undercurrent and topographic Rossby waves, respectively. Sediments, particularly in Mariana (422 ng g-1 dw), showed high OPE affinity, likely due to organic matter serving as a transport medium, influenced by "solvent switching", "solvent depletion", and "filtering processes". Amphipods in the three trenches had consistent OPE levels (29.1-215 ng g-1 lipid weight), independent of the sediment pollution patterns. The OPEs in these amphipods appeared more linked to surface-dwelling organisms, suggesting the influence of "solvent depletion". This study highlights the need for an improved understanding of deep-sea pollutant sources and transport, urging the establishment of protective measures for these remote marine habitats.

The influence of emerging atmospheric organophosphorus flame retardants from land source emissions on the East China Sea

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) pose a new challenge to the marine environment due to their toxicity and persistence. This study explores the contributions of OPFR emissions from different land sources and sectors to its contamination of the East China Sea (ECS) using a novel atmospheric transport model（ChnMETOP）for POPs and a marine food web model. The results show that the major land sources causing OPFR pollution in the ECS were situated in Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and middle reach areas of China's Yangtze River, confirming that source proximity made most significant contributions to OPFR pollution in the ECS. Among those OPFR emission sectors, industrial emissions accounted for the highest modeled OPFR levels in the seawaters, followed by the OPFR usage process in textile, plastic, and rubber products. Assessment of bioaccumulation of OPFR in the marine food web of the ECS and the potential risk in commercial fish consumers reveals lower exposure risk via dietary fish ingestion. However, the risk might increase if OPFRs are continuously bioaccumulated in the biotic and released into the abiotic marine environment. This study simultaneously identified both the source locations and emission sectors, thereby providing important policy implications in mitigating OPFR pollution in the ECS marine environment.

Organophosphate esters in the urban atmosphere of Thessaloniki city, Greece

The occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the atmosphere of the urban area of Thessaloniki city, Greece was studied. OPEs were determined in particulate matter (PM2.5) and precipitation during the period 2020-2021. ∑OPEs in rainwater ranged from 520 to 4719 ng L-11 (mean: 1662 ng L-1) with tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TClPP) being the most abundant compounds. TBOEP and TClPP as well as triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) and tris (chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) were the dominant OPEs in PM2.5. Concentrations of ∑OPEs in PM2.5ranged from 2.82 to 13.3 ng m-3 (mean: 5.93 ng m-3). Wet deposition fluxes of OPEs were estimated and air mass back trajectories were used to elucidate possible source profiles. An overall low health risk for local population via inhalation of OPEs was revealed.

Fate of organophosphate esters from the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Ocean: Occurrence, distribution, and fugacity model simulation

Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the air and seawater were investigated from the northwestern Pacific Ocean to the Southern Ocean during the 2018 Chinese 34th Antarctic Scientific Expedition. The concentration of total OPEs ranged from 164.82 to 3501.79 pg/m3 in air and from 4.54 to 70.09 ng/L in seawater. Two halogenated OPEs, tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), were generally more abundant than the non-halogenated OPEs. A level III fugacity model was developed to simulate the transfer and fate of seven OPEs in the air and seawater regions of the central Ross Sea. The model results indicate that OPEs are transferred from the air to the seawater in the central Ross Sea in summer, during which the Ross Sea acts as a final OPE sink. Dry and wet deposition dominated the processes involving OPE transfer to seawater. The OPE degradation process was also found to be more pervasive in the atmosphere than in the seawater region. These findings highlights the importance of long-range transport of OPEs and their air-seawater interface behavior in the Antarctic.

Organophosphate esters in seawater and sediments from the low-latitude tropical sea

Little is known about the distribution, transport and fate of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the low-latitude tropic sea. Fourteen OPEs were measured in seawater and sediments from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and South China Sea (SCS). The concentrations of OPEs in seawater and sediments ranged from 7.65-270 ng/L and 9.02-44.9 ng/g dw, respectively. The concentrations of OPEs in surface seawater from the PRE (93.4 ± 16.5 ng/L) were significantly higher than those in SCS (23.6 ± 2.17 ng/L, p < 0.001). OPEs in water from the PRE showed a decreasing trend from upstream to downstream. The salinity of water was an important factor to determine the concentrations of OPEs in the PRE. The annual input of OPEs from the PRE to the SCS was about 304 tons. The concentrations of OPEs in seawater column from the SCS decreased during 5-800 m and showed an increasing pattern from 800 m to 3400 m, indicating that OPEs can transport into deep seawater. TCPP was the most abundant OPEs in water and sediments from the PRE and TCEP was the predominant OPEs in the SCS. This work highlights long-range transport of OPEs by seawater to the deep sea environment.

Deriving seawater quality criteria of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate for ecological risk assessment in China seas through species sensitivity distributions

Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), one of the widely used organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), has been frequently detected in the marine environment in the seas off China. The existing freshwater biotoxicity data are not suited to derivation of the seawater quality criteria of TCEP and evaluating the associated ecological risks. This study aimed at deriving water quality criteria (WQC) of TCEP for marine organisms based on species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach using the acute toxicity data generated from multispecies bioassays and chronic toxicity data by converting acute data with the acute-to-chronic ratios (ACRs); the derived WQC were then used to evaluate the ecological risk for TCEP in China Seas. According to median effective concentration (EC50) and median lethal concentration (LC50), TCEP had a moderate or low toxicity to eight marine species selected, among which mysid Neomysis awatschensis (96h-LC50 of 39.65 mg/L) and green alga Platymonas subcordiformis (96-h EC50 of 395.42 mg/L) were the most sensitive and the most tolerant, respectively. The acute and chronic hazardous concentrations of TCEP for 5% of marine species (HC5) were estimated to be 29.55 and 2.68 mg/L, respectively. The short-term and long-term WQC were derived to be 9.85 and 0.89 mg/L, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) values indicated that TECP at current levels poses a negligible risk to marine ecosystems in China. These results will provide valuable reference for the government to establish a seawater quality standard for TCEP.

Spatial and temporal patterns of organophosphate Esters flame retardants and plasticizers in airborne particles over the Mediterranean sea

We studied the co-occurrence of OPEs and other constituents in atmospheric particles at the two edges of the Mediterranean Sea, under the influence of the transport of polluted air from Europe and dust from the Sahara. The highest OPE concentrations were observed during the summer period in the East Mediterranean and in spring for the NW Mediterranean. The total average atmospheric concentration of Σ6OPEs in the NW Mediterranean was 2103 ± 2020 pg m-3 (n = 23) with EHDPP and TCPP to be the predominant OPEs, accounting on average for 46% and 37% of the total Ʃ6OPEs concentrations, respectively. The average concentration of Σ6OPEs in East Mediterranean was 156.4 ± 170.3 pg m-3 (n = 67) with TCPP showing the highest concentration (116.1 ± 92.8 pg m-3), followed by TCEP (67.5 ± 55.8 pg m-3). In both areas, OPEs were mostly associated with fossil fuel combustion and road traffic, while the air masses from Saharan desert influenced the concentration of EHDPP, TCEP in NW Mediterranean and the TCEP concentration levels in the East Mediterranean. The total annual deposition of reported OPEs to the Mediterranean basin was estimated to be 584 tonnes, accounting for about 8.5% of the total deposited anthropogenic phosphorus.

Canadian high arctic ice core records of organophosphate flame retardants and plasticizers

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been used as flame retardants, plasticizers, and anti-foaming agents over the past several decades. Of particular interest is the long range transport potential of OPEs given their ubiquitous detection in Arctic marine air. Here we report 19 OPE congeners in ice cores drilled on remote icefields and ice caps in the Canadian high Arctic. A multi-decadal temporal profile was constructed in the sectioned ice cores representing a time scale spanning the 1970s to 2014-16. In the Devon Ice Cap record, the annual total OPE (∑OPEs) depositional flux for all of 2014 was 81 μg m-2, with the profile dominated by triphenylphosphate (TPP, 9.4 μg m-2) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP, 42 μg m-2). Here, many OPEs displayed an exponentially increasing depositional flux including TCPP which had a doubling time of 4.1 ± 0.44 years. At the more northern site on Mt. Oxford icefield, the OPE fluxes were lower. Here, the annual ∑OPEs flux in 2016 was 5.3 μg m-2, dominated by TCPP (1.5 μg m-2) but also tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (1.5 μg m-2 TBOEP). The temporal trend for halogenated OPEs in the Mt. Oxford icefield is bell-shaped, peaking in the mid-2000s. The observation of OPEs in remote Arctic ice cores demonstrates the cryosphere as a repository for these substances, and supports the potential for long-range transport of OPEs, likely associated with aerosol transport.

Established and emerging organophosphate esters (OPEs) and the expansion of an environmental contamination issue: A review and future directions

The list of organophosphate esters (OPEs) reported in the environment continues to expand as evidenced by the increasing number of OPE studies in the literature. However, there remains a general dearth of information on more recently produced and used OPEs that are proving to be emerging environmental contaminants. The present review summarizes the available studies in a systematic framework of the current state of knowledge on the analysis, environmental fate, and behavior of emerging OPEs. This review also details future directions to better understand emerging OPEs in the environment. Firstly, we make recommendations that the current structural/practical abbreviations and naming of OPEs be revised and updated. A chemical database (CDB) containing 114 OPEs is presently established based on the suspect list from the current scientific literature. There are 12 established OPEs and a total of 83 emerging OPEs that have been reported in human and/or biota samples. Of the emerging OPEs more than 80% have nearly 100% detection frequencies in samples of certain environmental media including indoor air, wastewater treatment plants, sediment, and fish. In contrast to OPEs considered established contaminants, most emerging OPEs have been identified more recently due to the more pervasive use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based approaches and especially gas or liquid chromatography coupled with HRMS-based non-target analysis (NTA) of environmental sample fractions. Intentional/unintentional industrial use and non-industrial formation are sources of emerging OPEs in the environment. Predicted physical-chemical properties in silico of newer, molecularly larger and more oligomeric OPEs strongly suggest that some compounds such as bisphenol A diphenyl phosphate (BPA-DPP) are highly persistent, bioaccumulative and/or toxic. Limited information on laboratory-based toxicity data has shown that some emerging OPEs elicit harmful effects such as cytotoxicity, development toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and endocrine disruption in exposed humans and mammals. Established, and to a much lesser degree emerging OPEs, have also been shown to transform and degrade in biota and possibly alter their toxicological effects. Research on emerging OPE contaminants is presently limited and more study is warranted on sample analysis methods, source apportionment, transformation processes, environmental behavior, biomarkers of exposure and toxicity.

PM2.5-Bound Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Hong Kong: Occurrence, Origins, and Source-Specific Health Risks

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are emerging organic pollutants in PM2.5, which have caused significant public health concerns in recent years, given their potential carcinogenic and neurotoxic effects. However, studies on the sources, occurrence, and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound OPFRs in Hong Kong are lacking. To address this knowledge gap, we characterized 13 OPFRs in one-year PM2.5 samples using gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Our findings showed that OPFRs were present at a median concentration of 4978 pg m-3 (ranging from 1924 to 8481 pg m-3), with chlorinated OPFRs dominating and accounting for 82.7% of the total OPFRs. Using characteristic source markers and positive matrix factorization, we identified one secondary formation and five primary sources of OPFRs. Over 94.0% of PM2.5-bound OPFRs in Hong Kong were primarily emitted, with plastic processing and waste disposal being the leading source (61.0%), followed by marine vessels (14.1%). The contributions of these two sources to OPFRs were more pronounced on days influenced by local pollution emissions (91.9%) than on days affected by regional pollution (44.2%). Our assessment of health risks associated with human exposure to PM2.5-bound OPFRs indicated a low-risk level. However, further source-specific health risk assessment revealed relatively high noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from chlorinated OPFRs emitted from plastic processing and waste disposal, suggesting a need for more stringent emission control of OPFRs from these sources in Hong Kong.

Fate of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in the "Cambi® TH + AAD" of sludge in a WWTP in Beijing, China

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are emerging environmental pollutants that cause endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. Sewage sludge is an important source of tri-OPFRs that are released into the environment. The occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of OPFRs in the full-scale "Cambi® thermal hydrolysis (TH) + advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) + plate-frame pressure filtration" sludge treatment process is closely related to the application of sewage sludge. We tested sludge samples from a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Nine tri-OPFRs were detected in the sludge samples collected at different treatment units during four seasons. The ΣOPFRs decreased from 1,742.65-2,579.68 ng/g to 971.48-1,702.22 ng/g. The mass flow of tri-OPFRs in treated sludge decreased by 61.4%, 48.9%, 42.4%, and 63.9% in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively, effectively reducing the corresponding ecological risk. The ecological risk of tri-OPFRs in sludge in forestland utilization mainly lies in chlorinated tri-OPFRs, especially TCPP and TCEP. No >42.20 t/hm2 of sludge could be used continuously for one year to prevent tri-OPFRs from exceeding the low ecological risk level, indicating that the current commonly applied proportion of sludge (1.6-30 t/hm2) will likely not raise the ecological risk of tri-OPFRs.

Spatiotemporal variations, surface inventory, and cross regional impact of current-use organoamine pesticides in Chinese Marginal Seas

Current-use Organoamine Pesticides (CUOAPs) are a growing concern as emerging pesticide pollutants that were initially discovered on a large scale in Chinese Marginal Seas (CMSs). The highest level was detected in the East China Sea in the late spring and decreased in the following order: East China Sea (early spring) > the South China Sea > the Bohai Sea. The crucial role played by the Yangtze and Yellow rivers as significant terrestrial sources were established. The fluctuations in the land application and riverine input led to variations in the source, distribution, and seasonal patterns of CUOAPs. Terrestrial-exported CUOAPs were transported and redistributed spatially by the surface ocean currents, resulting in significant regional disparities. The results displayed a pronounced terrestrial source signature and a cross-regional impact. By the ocean current transport, CMSs will likely become a secondary source region for the surrounding seas.

Regional Distribution of Atmospheric Organophosphate Tri-/Diesters in the Pearl River Delta: Possible Emission, Photo-degradation, and Atmospheric Transportation

The regional characteristics of atmospheric organophosphate triesters (OPEs) and organophosphate diesters (Di-OPs) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were investigated by passive air samplers mounting quartz fiber filters. The analytes were found on a regional scale. Atmospheric OPEs, semi-quantified using sampling rates of particulate-bonded PAHs, were in the range of 537-2852 pg/m³ in spring and in the range of 106-2055 pg/m³ in summer, with tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate as the main components. While atmospheric Di-OPs were semi-quantified using sampling rates of SO₄^2-, in the range of 22.5-5576 pg/m³ in spring and in the range of 66.9-1019 pg/m³ in summer, with di-n-butyl phosphate and diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) being the main Di-OPs. Our results indicated that OPEs were mainly distributed in the central part of the region, which might be ascribed to the distribution of industry related to OPE-containing products. In contrast, Di-OPs were scattered in the PRD, suggesting local emission from their direct industrial application. Significantly lower levels of TCEP, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), and DPHP were detected in summer than in spring, implying that these compounds might be partitioned off particles as the temperature increased and due to possible photo-transformation of TPHP and DPHP. The results also suggested the long-distance atmospheric transportation potential of Di-OPs.

Insights into the geographical distribution, bioaccumulation characteristics, and ecological risks of organophosphate esters

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as flame retardants and plasticizers, have been numerously explored regarding the occurrence and ecotoxicology. Given their toxicity, persistency and bio-accumulative potential, however, they may pose negative effects on ecosystems, regarding which is a growing global concern. Accordingly, the present review systematically analyses the recent literature to (1) elucidate their worldwide distribution, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification potential, (2) determine their interim water quality criteria (i.e., effect thresholds), and (3) preliminarily assess the ecological risks for 32 OPEs in aquatic ecosystems. The results showed that the spatiotemporal distribution of OPEs was geographically specific and closely related to human activities (i.e., megacities), especially halogenated-OPEs. We also found that precipitation of airborne particulates could affect the concentrations of OPEs in soil, and there was a positive correlation between the bioaccumulation and hydrophobicity of OPEs. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate may exhibit high bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. A substantial difference was found among interim water quality criteria for OPEs, partly attributable to the variation of their available toxicity data. Tris(phenyl) phosphate (TPHP) and tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate with the lowest predicted no-effect concentration showed the strongest toxicity of growth and reproduction. Through the application of the risk quotient and joint probability curve, TPHP and tris(chloroethyl) phosphate tended to pose moderate risks, which should receive more attention for risk management. Future research should focus on knowledge gaps in the mechanism of biomagnification, derivation of water quality criteria, and more precise assessment of ecological risks for OPEs.

Source Identification of Organophosphate Esters through the Profiles in Proglacial and Ocean Sediments from Ny-Ålesund, the Arctic

Little is known about the sources and environmental behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the Arctic, especially their transformation products. The present study unprecedentedly investigated both 16 tri-OPEs and 8 di-OPEs in proglacial and ocean sediments from Ny-Ålesund, the Arctic. Mean concentrations of tri-OPEs and di-OPEs in proglacial sediments were 487 and 341 pg/g dry weight (dw), respectively, which were significantly lower than those in ocean sediments (1692 and 525 pg/g dw). Ocean sediments might be simultaneously influenced by long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT), oceanic transport, and human activities, whereas proglacial sediments, since they are isolated from human settlements, may be dominantly affected by LRAT. Such source difference was evidenced by the contamination profile of OPEs: chlorinated tri-OPEs with high environmental persistence and high LRAT were dominant in proglacial sediments (66%); however, weakly environmentally persistent and highly hydrophobic aryl tri-OPEs were dominant in ocean sediments (47%), which were plausibly from local emission sources due to their low LRAT potential. Di-OPEs in proglacial and ocean sediments were dominated by groups of parent tri-OPEs with strong photodegradability, such as alkyl (75%) and aryl (58%). A higher mean molar ratio of di-OPE/tri-OPE in the proglacial sediment (14) than that in the ocean sediment (2.2) may be related to its higher photodegradation than that of the ocean sediment.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal variation, and ecological risks of organophosphate esters in the water and sediment of the middle and lower streams of the Yellow River and its important tributaries

Research on the environmental occurrence and behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) is very imperative. In this study, 12 targeted OPEs in the water and sediment samples collected from the middle and lower streams of the Yellow River (YR) and its tributaries during the dry, normal, and wet season were analyzed, to reveal their concentration, spatiotemporal variations, and ecological risks. The results indicated that the total concentration of OPEs (ΣOPE) ranged from 97.66 to 2433.30 ng/L in water, and from 47.33 to 234.08 ng/g in sediment. Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate (TCIPP), and triethyl phosphate (TEP) were the most abundant OPEs in the surface water and sediment. The OPEs levels in river water were ranked as the order of dry &gt; normal &gt; wet season. The ΣOPE concentrations in water and sediment were relatively high in the central and lower sections of the YR. The resorcinol-bis(diphenyl)phosphate (RDP) effectively transferred from the overlying water to the sediment. TCEP and RDP posed relatively higher ecological risk than other OPEs. Municipal and chemical industrial discharge might be sources of OPEs in the middle and lower streams of the YR.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) in a coral reef food web of the Xisha Islands, South China Sea: Occurrence, trophodynamic, and exposure risk

Despite organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely prevalent in the environment, however, limited information is available regarding their occurrence, trophodynamics, and exposure risks in coral reef ecosystems. In this study, 11 OPEs were investigated in a tropical marine food web (7 fish species and 9 benthos species) from the Xisha (XS) Islands, South China Sea (SCS). The ∑₁₁OPEs were 1.52 ± 0.33 ng/L, 2227 ± 2062 ng/g lipid weight (lw), 1024 ± 606 ng/g lw, and 1800 ± 1344 ng/g lw in seawater, fish, molluscs, and corals, respectively. Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPPs) were the dominant OPEs in seawater, fish, and molluscs, while tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) predominated in coral tissues. Abiotic and biotic factors jointly affect the OPEs enrichment in marine organisms. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) (range: 1.31-39.2) indicated the biomagnification potency of OPEs. A dietary exposure risk assessment indicated that OPEs at current levels in coral reef fish posed a low risk to human health but were not negligible. Overall, this study contributes to a further understanding of the environmental behaviors of OPEs in coral reef ecosystems.

Bioaccumulation and emission of organophosphate esters in plants affecting the atmosphere's phosphorus cycle

The imbalance of atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic phosphorus budgets remains a research conundrum and global concern. In this work, the uptake, distribution, bioaccumulation and emission of organophosphate esters (OPEs) by clove trees (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon trees (Citrus limon) and cape jasmine trees (Gardenia jasminoides var. fortuniana) was investigated as conduits for phosphorus transfer or sinks and sources. The objective was to assess the role OPEs in soils play as atmospheric phosphorus sources through plant bioaccumulation and emission. Results demonstrated OPEs in experimental soil plots ranging from 0.01 to 81.0 ng g^-1 dry weight, were absorbed and transported through plants to the atmosphere. The total emission of OPEs varied greatly from 0.2 to 588.9 pg g^-1 L^-1 h^-1, with a mean of 47.6 pg g^-1 L^-1 h^-1. There was a negative linear relationship between the concentrations of total phosphorus and four OPEs, tri-iso-butyl phosphate, tri-n-butyl phosphate, tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and tripentyl phosphate. Trimethyl phosphate levels were positively correlated with total nitrogen, and the concentrations of tri-iso-butyl phosphate, tri-n-butyl phosphate, tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and tripentyl phosphate decreased along with available potassium in leaves after 72 h. There was a significantly positive linear relationship between higher emission concentrations of OPEs and the emission factor of OPEs concentration (F = 4.2, P = 0.002), with lower emissions of OPEs and the bioaccumulation of OPEs in leaves (F = 4.8, P = 0.004). OPEs releases to the atmosphere were enriched in aerosols, and participate in atmospheric chemical reactions like photolysis, thereby affecting the phosphorus balance and cycling in the atmosphere.

Occurrence, spatial patterns, air-seawater exchange, and atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the Northwest Pacific to Arctic Ocean

Numerous studies have elucidated the characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Arctic; however, their behavior in different environments has not been studied at a large scale. To investigate the occurrence, spatial trends, air-seawater exchange and atmospheric deposition of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), this study takes sample from the Northwest Pacific Ocean. to the Arctic Ocean.The concentrations of 16 PAHs in air and seawater ranged from 27 to 5658 pg/m³ and 34-338 ng/L, respectively. The air-seawater exchange flux of the region was calculated with a Whitman two-film model to be -82681-24613 ng/m²/day. Meanwhile, low-ring PAHs were transported from seawater to the air, while high-ring PAHs were transported from air to seawater. A correlation analysis between multiple environmental factors and particle phase ratio suggested that temperature might be the major driving factor for PAHs in the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) process. Moreover, the dry atmospheric deposition fluxes in the region were analyzed by considering environmental factors and the physicochemical properties of each PAHs monomer, these fluxes ranged from 0.001 to 696 ng/m²/day and were greater inshore than offshore and at higher latitudes. This study highlights that PAHs are affected by LRAT during their transport from Asia to Northwest Pacific and further to the Arctic Ocean, while emphasizing that air-seawater exchange plays an important role in air-sea interactions in the open ocean.

The coupling between biological pump export and air-water exchange of organophosphate esters in a subtropical water environment

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are well-known persistent organic pollutants with their ubiquitous environmental presence and adverse ecological and human health impacts. To study the transport and fate of OPEs in a subtropical environment, nine OPE compounds were analyzed in the gas phase (air samples), dissolved phase (water samples), and plankton samples collected over one year from or in the vicinity of an urban lake in Guangzhou, South China. The mean concentrations of ∑₉OPEs were 2.93 ± 1.68 ng/m³ in the air, 455 ± 236 ng/L in the dissolved phase, 81.3 ± 41.2 ng/L in phytoplankton, and 4.79 ± 1.94 ng/L in zooplankton. Although the compositional profiles of OPEs varied among different media, tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the predominant OPE in most samples. Less hydrophobic OPEs such as TCPP and tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) had lower bioaccumulation potential in the lake. The biological pump export played an important role in eliminating OPEs from the surface water, with fluxes ranging from 30.5 to 361 ng/m²/d. The more phytoplankton biomass in surface water, the greater the role of the biological pump. The fugacity fractions and air-water exchange fluxes suggested that TCPP and tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCP) would enter the urban lake by gaseous deposition. Nevertheless, the lake acted as an important "secondary source" for TCEP and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP). The bio-pump might influence the air-water exchange processes of OPEs.

Atmospheric deposition contributed mostly to organophosphorus flame retardant entering into the Bohai Sea, China

Atmospheric emission sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China's eastern seaboard regions cause heavy POP contamination in the Bohai Sea (BS), China. Because many rivers are emptying into the BS, terrestrial runoff has been considered a dominant pathway of POPs onto the BS. Here, we explored the contribution of atmospheric transport and terrestrial runoff to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) to the BS by using an atmospheric transport model and a terrestrial runoff model. We examined the sensitivity and response of OPFR in the BS seawater to its atmospheric transport, deposition, and riverine discharge via terrestrial runoff. Both terrestrial runoff and atmospheric transport model simulations reveal that the atmospheric transport and deposition, including dry, wet, and diffusive gaseous deposition, dominate OPFR input into the BS. The total OPFR fluxes entering the BS via the atmospheric pathway and riverine input were 70.4 and 2.8 t/yr in 2013, respectively.

Significant input of organophosphate esters through particle-mediated transport into the Pearl River Estuary, China

Most organophosphate esters (OPEs) enter the marine environment through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, yet the role of particle-mediated transport in their inputs and loss processes remains poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, samples of size-segregated atmospheric particles, suspended particulate matter (SPM) in seawater, and sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were collected and analyzed for OPEs. Total concentrations of atmospheric particulate OPEs showed a decreasing trend with increasing offshore distance in the PRE. The spatial and vertical distribution patterns of OPEs in SPM were diverse, which could be largely affected by physicochemical properties of SPM, marine microbial activities, hydrodynamic conditions, and environmental factors. Sediment in the region close to Modaomen outlet was subject to relatively high OPE concentrations. Approximately 24,100 and 65,100 g d^-1 of particulate OPEs were imported into the PRE through atmospheric deposition and surface runoff, respectively; 83,200 g d^-1 of which were exported to the open sea. The input and environmental fate of particulate OPEs were found to be dependent on sources, particulate media, and chemical species. The present study provides insights into the influence of OPEs in the PRE through particle-mediated transport and calls for more concern on anthropogenic impact on the estuary.

The first detection of organophosphate esters (OPEs) of a high altitude fresh snowfall in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Due to the gradual phase-out of brominated flame retardants, the consumption of organophosphate esters (OPEs) as suitable alternatives has increased in recent years. These compounds could be trapped and accumulate in the widely developed glaciers such as Laohugou Glacier No. 12 in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), as snow is an effective scavenger of organic pollutants in the atmosphere. However, large gaps in knowledge still exist regarding the occurrence, distribution, and source analysis of OPEs in TP glaciers. In this study, eight surface snow samples collected at different altitudes on Laohugou Glacier No. 12 on the northeastern edge of the TP in order to investigate sources and distribution of OPEs. The results showed that the concentrations of ∑7OPEs varied from 54.53 ng/L to 169.15 ng/L, with a mean of 99.84 ng/L. ∑Chlorinated-OPEs (Cl-OPEs) were dominant in these samples, accounting for 83% of the total OPE concentrations. ∑OPEs concentration increases with altitude on Laohugou Glacier No. 12, implying an altitudinal magnification effect on OPEs deposition. Principal component analysis suggests that OPEs primarily originated from traffic emissions and their variations were largely driven by dust transport. Analyses of backward trajectories of air masses and the wind field indicate that these OPEs might have come from urban emissions northwest of Laohugou Glacier No. 12. This study provides the first valuable insight into the environmental behavior of OPEs in Tibetan glaciers.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

The presence of numerous emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and remobilization of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions have become significant concerns of the scientific communities, public groups and stakeholders. This work reviews the occurrences of EOCs and POPs and their long-range environmental transport (LRET) processes via atmosphere and ocean currents from continental sources to polar regions. Concentrations of classic POPs have been systematically monitored in air at several Arctic stations and showed seasonal variations and declining trends. These chemicals were also the major POPs reported in the Antarctica, while their concentrations were lower than those in the Arctic, illustrating the combination of remoteness and lack of potential local sources for the Antarctica. EOCs were investigated in air, water, snow, ice and organisms in the Arctic. Data in the Antarctica are rare. Reemission of legacy POPs and EOCs accumulated in glaciers, sea ice and snow may alter the concentrations and amplify their effects in polar regions. Thus, future research will need to understand the various biogeochemical and geophysical processes under climate change and anthropogenic pressures.

Occurrence, distribution, source identification, and risk assessment of organophosphate esters in the coastal waters of Beibu Gulf, South China Sea: Impacts of riverine discharge and fishery

As emerging pollutants, the environmental geochemistry of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the coastal zone with multiple functional areas are still less recognized. This study investigated spatiotemporal distribution, sources and risks of 11 widely used OPEs in surface waters from seagoing rivers and multiple coastal functional areas of the Beibu Gulf. The results indicated that significantly higher ∑₁₁OPEs (total concentrations of 11 OPEs, ng/L) occurred in summer (34.2-1227) than in winter (20.6-840), as a result of the high emission caused by climate reasons. In general, higher ∑₁₁OPEs occurred in rivers (41.2-1227) than in the coast (34.2-809) in summer, especially in the urban rivers, while in winter, higher ∑₁₁OPEs occurred in the coast (23.4-840 vs 20.6-319 in rivers) because of obviously higher ∑₁₁OPEs in marine fishery areas (99-840). Source identification revealed that fishery activity, especially fishing vessels, and urban rivers were the main sources of OPEs in the Beibu Gulf. For the individual OPE, only tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP) may have ecological risks to aquatic organisms in a few sites, but if considering the additive effects, the OPEs mixtures would pose a high risk to algae and low to medium threats to crustaceans and fish.

Terrigenous export and ocean currents' diffusion of organophosphorus flame retardants along China's adjacent seas

High demands for but strict regulatory measures on Organophosphorus Flame Retardants (OPFRs) have resulted in mainland China transitioning from the region that imports OPRFs to one that exports these substances. Simultaneously, large quantities of terrigenous OPFRs have been exported to adjacent seas by the major river systems, particularly the Yangtze River. This study examined the presence of ten OPFRs in China's adjacent seas. High levels of OPFRs were observed in seas south of mainland China, with Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) dominant. The terrigenous OPFRs were redistributed by the ocean surface currents, with OPFRs tending to accumulate in regions with lower current speed. The producers of OPFRs are mainly distributed along the Haihe, Yellow, and Yangtze river systems. The application of OPFRs to electric vehicle charging stations, charging connectors, and 5G infrastructure in the Chinese mainland will likely drive rapid growth in OPFR related industry in the future. The diffusion trend map of OPFR indicated that the Bohai Sea and the central northern Yellow Sea are at high risk of ecological damage in the spring. The offshore region of the north of the South China Sea tended to aggregate more OPFRs in summer. Regions of the OPFR aggregation effect were at a higher risk of ecological damage.

Seasonal variation and deposition of atmospheric organophosphate esters in the coastal region of Shanghai, China

The coastal megacity Shanghai is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, a dominant flame retardants (FRs) production region in China, especially for organophosphate esters (OPEs). This prompted us to investigate occurrence and seasonal changes of atmospheric OPEs in Shanghai, as well as to evaluate their sources, environmental behavior and fate as a case study for global coastal regions. Atmospheric gas and particle phase OPEs were weekly collected at two coastal sites - the emerging town Lingang New Area (LGNA), and the chemical-industry zone Jinshan Area (JSA) from July 2016-June 2017. Total atmospheric concentrations of the observed OPEs were significantly higher in JSA (median of 1800 pg m^-3) than LGNA (median of 580 pg m^-3). Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant compound, and the proportion of three chlorinated OPEs were higher in the particle phase (55%) than in the gas phase (39%). The year-round median contribution of particle phase OPEs was 33%, which changed strongly with seasons, accounting for 10% in summer in contrast to 62% in winter. Gas and particle phase OPEs in JSA exhibited significant correlations with inverse of temperature, respectively, indicating the importance of local/secondary volatilization sources. The estimated fluxes of gaseous absorption were almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of particle phase deposition, which could act as sources of organic phosphorus to coastal and open ocean waters.

Atmospheric deposition, seasonal variation, and long-range transport of organophosphate esters on Yongxing Island, South China Sea

The South China Sea (SCS), surrounded by developing countries/regions with a huge consumption of flame retardants, is generally contaminated by organophosphate esters (OPEs). However, studies on the occurrence, deposition and long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) process over the SCS of OPEs compounds are still limited. In this work, 10 OPEs were measured in 100 atmospheric samples collected from Yongxing Island (YXI) in the SCS. The total OPEs concentrations ranged from 1508 to 1968 pg/m³ with 28.6-1416.9 pg/m³ in gas and 95.2-1066.2 pg/m³ in particle partition. The three chlorinated OPEs are present at higher concentrations than the other seven non-chlorinated OPEs. Most OPEs had clear seasonal variations that followed the order: spring>summer≈winter>autumn except for tri-isobutyl phosphate (TIBP) and tris-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP). The particle-bound fraction of the total OPEs had little seasonal variations with a mean value of 0.35. Comparing J-P model and Koa model, it was found that the gas/particle partition in the study area was in non-equilibrium condition. LRAT, controlled by seasonal wind direction, was the predominated factor that led to the seasonal variations of OPEs on YXI. The average daily deposition flux of total OPEs was 13.0 ng/m² with an annual total deposition of 15.06 g.

Occurrence, potential sources and risks of organophosphate esters in the high-elevation region, Tibet, China

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used flame retardants that are frequently released into the environment, causing potential harm to humans and ecosystems. Tibet is located on the Tibetan Plateau, known as the "roof of the world", but the occurrence of OPEs in Tibet remains unclear. This is the first report of the occurrence, potential sources and risks of 12 OPEs in water, soil, sediment and snow from Xainza, a typical town at high-elevation in Tibet (average elevation = 4700 m). Ten OPEs were observed, with ∑OPE concentrations of 46.45-1744.73 ng/L in surface water, 29.74-73.85 ng/g in soil, and 13.30-32.23 ng/g in sediment. Moreover, the mean ∑OPE concentration in snow was 413.90 ng/L. Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the main OPEs in surface water and snow, while 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) was dominant in soil and sediment. Local human activities and long-distance atmospheric transport may be the main sources of OPEs in Xainza. The assessment of ecological risk indicated that EHDPP in soil poses potential risk. The occurrence of OPEs in Xainza showed that more attention should be paid to persistent organic pollutants in high-elevation regions.

Exploring source footprint of Organophosphate esters in the Bohai Sea, China: Insight from temporal and spatial variabilities in the atmosphere from June 2014 to May 2019

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are still produced and used in large quantities in the world-wide, and the environmental burden and behavior have generated widespread concern, especially in some large-scale waterbodies. This study conducted a comprehensive assessment on the temporal and spatial variabilities and budget of OPEs to trace the source for the Bohai Sea (BS), based on a 5-year seasonal monitoring campaign (June 2014 to May 2019) of 12 atmospheric sites around the BS and our previous studies. The average concentration of Σ₁₀OPEs in atmosphere during the sampling period was 7.65 ± 6.42 ng m^-3, and chlorinated OPEs were the major compounds. The Seasonal-Trend decomposition procedure based on Loess (STL) analyzed that during the 5-year sampling period, the atmospheric concentrations of Σ₁₀OPEs had a slightly increasing trend with a rate of + 0.092 ng m^-3 yr^-1, and the seasonal concentrations had a distinct seasonal distribution. The highest concentration of Σ₁₀OPEs was observed at the sampling site of Dalian, followed by Tianjin, Yantai, and Beihuangcheng. The estimation of the fugacity ratios and air-water gas exchange fluxes established that the concentration levels of two major components of chlorinated OPEs (tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP)) in the atmosphere were dominated by their volatilization from BS's seawater (1.24 ± 0.46 t yr^-1 for TCEP and 5.15 ± 2.15 t yr^-1 for TCPP), with 73% deriving from the coastal seawater. The budget assessment suggested that the volatile fluxes of TCEP and TCPP accounted for 8% and 29% of their storages (15.6 ± 5.32 t for TCEP and 17.6 ± 6.70 t for TCPP) in the BS seawater, which were mainly contributed by continental river input (20% for TCEP and 42% for TCPP). The efforts indicated that river inputs of TCEP and TCPP needed to be paid more attention for the improvement of environmental quality of the BS.

Organophosphate esters in atmospheric particles and surface seawater in the western South China Sea

Seven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in atmospheric particles and surface seawater were observed during a cruise in the western South China Sea (SCS) in 2014. The median concentrations of ∑OPEs were 688 pg/m³ and 5.55 ng/L for particle and seawater samples, respectively. Total OPEs were dominated by tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP). The spatial distribution of OPEs indicates that the OPEs in particle phase were mainly influenced by the air masses originating from China, Indochina Peninsula and Malay Archipelago, showing the significant contribution of anthropogenic sources from these regions. Significant positive correlations between Tri-n-butylphosphate (TnBP) and organic carbon (P < 0.05) in particle phase over the western SCS suggests that it might be a potential tracer for the source regions of Indochina Peninsula and Malay Archipelago. The spatial distribution of OPEs in seawater was contributed by freshwater inputs associating with variations of human activities as well as salinity. Seawater pollution levels of OPEs in the eastern coast of Vietnam were increased compared to those measured in the northern SCS. The loadings of ∑OPEs transported to the vast area of western SCS vias atmospheric deposition and air-seawater gas exchange were estimated to be 59 tons/year and 105 tons/year, respectively. This work highlights the importance of transport processes and air-seawater interface behavior of OPEs in the oceanic area.

Determination of multiple organic flame retardants in maricultural water using High-volume/High-throughput Solid-phase extraction followed by liquid/gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

A rapid and efficient analytical method is proposed and optimized for the enrichment, extraction and instrument analysis of four typical organic flame retardants (OFRs), including organophosphate esters (OPEs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) and dechlorane compounds (Dechloranes) in maricultural waters using High-volume/High-throughput Solid-phase extraction with in-situ ultrasonic technique followed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrumental detection. The optimized pretreatment conditions were that the analytes were enriched by XAD-2 resins and eluted repeatedly with 50 mL hexane/acetone (1:1, v:v) for 5 min. The results of method validation exhibited that the developed method can be used for quantitative detection of 11 OPEs, 13 PBDEs, 3 HBCDs and 5 Dechloranes in water samples. The method detection limits (MDLs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) are 0.4-26.2 pg/L and 1.5-87.4 pg/L for OPEs, 23.3-35.4 pg/L and 77.5-117.9 pg/L for HBCDs, 0.8-97.4 pg/L and 2.6-324.7 pg/L for PBDEs and 9.3-78.5 pg/L and 31.0-261.8 pg/L for Dechloranes, respectively. The method was successfully applied in lagoon maricultural areas in Hainan province, and the results showed that 4 OFRs were detected in almost all water samples. Total concentrations of 18 water samples were 1.89-39.97 ng/L for OPEs, 0.18-5.40 ng/L for PBDEs, ND-0.24 ng/L for HBCDs and 0.01-1.77 ng/L for Dechloranes, respectively. The optimized analytical method is highly sensitive and efficient with expectation to play an essential role in monitoring the ultra-trace organic pollutants and providing an effective risk assessment in ecological environment.

Spatial distribution and air-water exchange of organophosphate esters in the lower Great Lakes

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been detected at elevated concentrations in the Great Lakes region, dwarfing other flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), as chemicals of emerging concern (CECs). This prompted us to deploy polyethylene (PE) passive samplers in air and water column of the lower Great Lake region (Lake Erie and Lake Ontario) to detect gaseous and dissolved OPEs, evaluate their occurrence and spatial distribution, and estimate their air-water gas exchange fluxes. The median concentration of the total dissolved and gaseous phase OPEs detected (Σ₉OPEs) were 95 ng L^-1 and 404 pg m^-3, respectively, during April-November 2014. Gaseous and dissolved concentrations were dominated by chlorinated compounds, in particular (tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), while tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) was the dominant non-chlorinated OPEs in both media. Decreasing concentration gradients from shoreline/nearshore to offshore sites for both gaseous and aqueous OPEs reflect anthropogenic influence from the adjacent rural and urban regions. The partial dependence of gaseous OPEs on temperature indicate the importance of volatilization from local sources, fresh emissions as well as advection from distant sources to air. Almost all OPEs underwent net gas-phase deposition to the lakes, dominated by TCEP and TCPPs with median fluxes of -3980 ng/m²/day and -1320 ng/m²/day; the exception was TnBP, which underwent volatilization with the median fluxes of 1980 ng/m²/day. For all air-water pairs, the gaseous diffusive fluxes were 2-4 orders of magnitude greater than the estimated particle dry deposition fluxes.

Spatial pattern analysis reveals multiple sources of organophosphorus flame retardants in coastal waters

Organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) are a group of emerging contaminants which have been detected in worldwide waters. However, source of various PFRs in the large-scale area like coastal water environment have not been clearly revealed. In this study, fifteen PFRs in coast of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area (GBA), China were investigated, and a method of spatial pattern analysis was firstly used for pollution source identification. Seawater samples from different segments of GBA coast were analyzed and thirteen PFRs were quantified with total concentrations ranging from 32.7 to 1032.7 ng L^-1. GBA coasts have been seriously polluted by PFRs. A hierarchical cluster analysis of the PFR concentrations in different GBA sites showed significant spatial distributions for different types of PFRs. A series of correlation analysis between PFRs distributions and spatial pattern of GBA socio-economic indicators were performed, and multiple sources including human settlement, wastewater, manufacture, construction industry, vehicles, and shipping transport were found to be correlated to PFRs pollutions in the coasts. This study indicates that spatial pattern analysis based on statistical analysis would be a promising method of analyzing environmental data and exploring pollution source in large-scale area.

Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers in surface seawater of the West Pacific

Twenty-eight samples of surface seawater were collected from the West Pacific Ocean during 2019 using a high-volume solid-phase extraction with high-throughput organic analysis (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE) method, and concentrations of 10 organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers (OPEs) were determined. The total OPE concentration in the samples was 3.02-48.4 ng L^-1 (mean 25.0 ± 10.5 ng L^-1), with tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) being the largest contributor. Cluster analysis results showed off-shore input from the coast of East and Southeast Asia was an important source of these chemicals. Tri-p-tolyl phosphate (TpTP) should also be considered for long-term monitoring, because of its high detection frequency. Results of a risk assessment indicated low ecological risk to species in the West Pacific Ocean for TPhP and ΣOPEs. Hazard quotients (HQs) were all <1, indicating that the health risk to humans from these chemicals was at acceptable levels.

First study on the presence of plastic additives in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the Mediterranean Sea

Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) voluntarily ingest floating plastic debris and hence are chronically exposed to plastic additives, but very little is known about the levels of these compounds in their tissues. This work studied the presence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) on sea turtles collected from two different areas in the western Mediterranean, some of their prey and some floating plastic debris. OPEs were detected in all the samples analysed and ∑OPEs ranged from 12.5 to 384 ng/g wet weight (ww) in the turtles from the Catalan coasts, with a mean value of 21.6 ng/g ww, and from 6.08 to 100 ng/g ww in the turtles the Balearic Islands, with a mean value of 37.9 ng/g ww. Differences in ∑OPEs were statistically significant, but turtles from the two regions did not differ in their OPE profiles. As per turtle's prey, ∑OPEs ranged from 4.55 to 90.5 ng/g ww. Finally, marine plastic litter showed ∑OPEs concentrations between 10.9 and 868 ng/g. Although most compounds were present in both potential sources of contamination, prey and plastic debris, the OPE profiles in loggerhead turtles and these sources were different. Some OPEs, such as tris(2-isopropylphenyl) phosphate (T2IPPP), tripropyl phosphate (TPP) and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), were detected in plastic debris and turtle muscle but not in their prey, thus suggesting that ingestion of plastic debris was their main source. Contrarily, the levels of triethyl phosphate (TEP), diphenyl cresyl phosphate (DCP), 2-isopropylphenyl diphenyl phosphate (2IPPDPP) and 4-isopropylphenyl diphenyl phosphate (4IPPDPP) in turtle muscle were much higher than in jellyfish, their main prey, thus indicating a biomagnification potential. Regular ingestion of plastic debris and contamination from their prey may explain why ∑OPEs in loggerhead turtles is much higher than the values reported previously for teleost fishes and marine mammals from the western Mediterranean.

Long-Range Transport, Trophic Transfer, and Ecological Risks of Organophosphate Esters in Remote Areas

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been a focus in the field of environmental science due to their large volume production, wide range of applications, ubiquitous occurrence, potential bioaccumulation, and worrisome ecological and health risks. Varied physicochemical properties among OPE analogues represent an outstanding scientific challenge in studying the environmental fate of OPEs in recent years. There is an increasing number of studies focusing on the long-range transport, trophic transfer, and ecological risks of OPEs. Therefore, it is necessary to conclude the OPE pollution status on a global scale, especially in the remote areas with vulnerable and fragile ecosystems. The present review links together the source, fate, and environmental behavior of OPEs in remote areas, integrates the occurrence and profile data, summarizes their bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and ecological risks, and finally points out the predominant pollution burden of OPEs among organic pollutants in remote areas. Given the relatively high contamination level and bioaccumulation/biomagnification behavior of OPEs, in combination with the sensitivity of endemic species in remote areas, more attention should be paid to the potential ecological risks of OPEs.

Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the seawater and sediments of the Qinzhou Bay, Northern Beibu Gulf: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks

The occurrence, distributions, and ecological risks of 11 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in the seawater and sediment samples from the Qinzhou Bay. The Σ₁₁OPFRs in the surface seawater and sediments ranged from 150 to 885 ng/L and from <the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 32.2 ng/g dw, respectively, with high levels of OPFRs in the industrialized and port areas. Tris (2-chloro-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP) were the dominant OPFRs in the surface seawater and sediments. The Σ₁₁OPFRs concentrations in the sediment core ranged 1.2-18.6 ng/g dw and the vertical trends showed a recent increase of OPFRs emissions, especially for TNBP and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP). Risk assessment revealed that individual OPFR could pose low to medium ecological risks, but the risk from the mixture of OPFRs on aquatic organisms requires more attention.

Comprehensive evaluation of organophosphate ester contamination in surface water and sediment of the Bohai Sea, China

This study investigated the occurrence and profile of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface water and sediment of the whole Bohai Sea. A total of 53 pairs of surface water and sediment samples were collected and the contained OPEs were quantified using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The average concentrations of OPEs in surface water and sediment were in the range of 0-92.9 ng/L and 0.001-8.58 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, with tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) as the predominant congener in both compartments. The total concentrations of 14 OPEs (∑₁₄OPEs) in surface water and sediment were in the range of 10.9-516.4 ng/L and 1.42-52.9 ng/g dw, respectively. The inventories of ∑₁₄OPEs were calculated to be 179.3 tons in the water and 101.5 tons in the sediment. Based on the risk quotients (RQs), the ecological risks of OPEs to the aquatic organisms in the Bohai Sea were considered to be negligible.
