Heavy metal pollution in the East China Sea: A review

Seasonal variability of trace elements bioaccumulation in Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from an experimental pilot farm in the Calich Lagoon (Sardinia, Italy)

BACKGROUND

Metals pollution is a worldwide environmental issue due to their persistence in the ecosystems, non-degradability, and bioaccumulation in marine biota. Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are highly nutritious bivalve representing an important dietary constituent but may accumulate metals through feeding on suspended sediments from surrounding water, then represent a suitable tool for biomonitoring.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The occurrence of trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sn, V, Zn) was investigated in Pacific Oysters (Cassostrea gigas) collected from Calich Lagoon in each season of 2019. Samples were homogenized and subjected to microwave acid digestion before being analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

RESULTS

The results showed a significant seasonal variation for temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and pH. Moreover, high significant seasonal variation in concentrations of Cd, Mn, Ni, and V was recorded. The highest values were found for Fe (128 mg kg⁻1 w.w.), and Al (112 mg kg⁻1 w.w.) in October, for Zn (113 mg kg⁻1 w.w.) in March and May.

CONCLUSIONS

Pacific Oysters were confirmed as suitable bioindicators of the health status of coastal lagoons; trace elements concentrations were highly affected by season of collection, and according to literature the highest values were recorded in autumn and summer. The EU legal limits for Cd and Pb were not exceeded, then the farmed oysters were safe to consumers.

Insights into trehalose mediated physiological and biochemical mechanisms in Zea mays L. under chromium stress

BACKGROUND

Chromium (Cr) toxicity significantly threatens agricultural ecosystems worldwide, adversely affecting plant growth and development and reducing crop productivity. Trehalose, a non-reducing sugar has been identified as a mitigator of toxic effects induced by abiotic stressors such as drought, salinity, and heavy metals. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influence of exogenously applied trehalose on maize plants exposed to Cr stress.

RESULTS

Two maize varieties, FH-1046 and FH-1453, were subjected to two different Cr concentrations (0.3 mM, and 0.5 mM). The results revealed significant variations in growth and biochemical parameters for both maize varieties under Cr-induced stress conditions as compared to the control group. Foliar application of trehalose at a concentration of 30 mM was administered to both maize varieties, leading to a noteworthy reduction in the detrimental effects of Cr stress. Notably, the Cr (0.5 mM) stress more adversely affected the shoot length more than 0.3mM of Cr stress. Cr stress (0.5 mM) significantly reduced the shoot length by 12.4% in FH-1046 and 24.5% in FH-1453 while Trehalose increased shoot length by 30.19% and 4.75% in FH-1046 and FH-1453 respectively. Cr stress significantly constrained growth and biochemical processes, whereas trehalose notably improved plant growth by reducing Cr uptake and minimizing oxidative stress caused by Cr. This reduction in oxidative stress was evidenced by decreased production of proline, SOD, POD, MDA, H2O2, catalase, and APX. Trehalose also enhanced photosynthetic activities under Cr stress, as indicated by increased values of chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids. Furthermore, the ameliorative potential of trehalose was demonstrated by increased contents of proteins and carbohydrates and a decrease in Cr uptake.

CONCLUSIONS

The study demonstrates that trehalose application substantially improved growth and enhanced photosynthetic activities in both maize varieties. Trehalose (30 mM) significantly increased the plant biomass, reduced ROS production and enhanced resilience to Cr stress even at 0.5 mM.

Assessing and predicting water quality index with key water parameters by machine learning models in coastal cities, China

The water quality index (WQI) is a widely used tool for comprehensive assessment of river environments. However, its calculation involves numerous water quality parameters, making sample collection and laboratory analysis time-consuming and costly. This study aimed to identify key water parameters and the most reliable prediction models that could provide maximum accuracy using minimal indicators. Water quality from 2020 to 2023 were collected including nine biophysical and chemical indicators in seventeen rivers in Yancheng and Nantong, two coastal cities in Jiangsu Province, China, adjacent to the Yellow Sea. Linear regression and seven machine learning models (Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) and Stochastic Gradient Boosting (SGB)) were developed to predict WQI using different groups of input variables based on correlation analysis. The results indicated that water quality improved from 2020 to 2022 but deteriorated in 2023, with inland stations exhibiting better conditions than coastal ones, particularly in terms of turbidity and nutrients. The water environment was comparatively better in Nantong than in Yancheng, with mean WQI values of approximately 55.3-72.0 and 56.4-67.3, respectively. The classifications "Good" and "Medium" accounted for 80 % of the records, with no instances of "Excellent" and 2 % classified as "Bad". The performance of all prediction models, except for SOM, improved with the addition of input variables, achieving R2 values higher than 0.99 in models such as SVM, RF, XGB, and SGB. The most reliable models were RF and XGB with key parameters of total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (AN), and dissolved oxygen (DO) (R2 = 0.98 and 0.91 for training and testing phase) for predicting WQI values, and RF using TP and AN (accuracy higher than 85 %) for WQI grades. The prediction accuracy for "Medium" and "Low" water quality grades was highest at 90 %, followed by the "Good" level at 70 %. The model results could contribute to efficient water quality evaluation by identifying key water parameters and facilitating effective water quality management in river basins.

Offshore habitats of endangered large mobile species in the western Yellow Sea: Quality status under shipping pressure

Increasing shipping pressure (SP) deteriorates offshore habitats of large mobile species (LMS) and invalidates marine conservation systems, while the threat of SP to the survival of LMS is not well understood. Here, for the 16 endangered LMS in the western Yellow Sea, we quantified their habitat quality in specific sea areas and conservation capacity of marine protected areas (MPAs) under SP, based on AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and an overlay analysis method for SP surfaces and LMS habitats. Results indicate that three specific sea areas have partially lost habitat function, and their MPA networks have also lost 66.7 %, 59.1 %, and 9.2 % of conservation capacity, respectively. To prevent the continued degradation and extinction of endangered LMS, urgent rescue efforts are needed. This study highlights the importance of monitoring offshore shipping pressure and LMS habitat quality, and the findings contribute to the adjustment of marine spatial planning and LMS protection strategies.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in riverine sediments along the East China Sea: A large-scale integrated analysis

This study comprehensively assesses spatial distribution, pollution levels, and potential sources of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments across multiple river systems along the coastal area of the East China Sea. Copper in Qiantang River and Xiangshan Bay showed higher concentations and exceeded the threshold effect value, while the higher content of Lead was mainly found in the Saijiang River, Oujiang River, and Minjiang River. Heavy metal(loid)s in the alluvium of Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, and Yangtze River showed low to moderate pollution levels, with Cd posing the highest ecological risk, followed by Hg. Meanwhile, Qiantang River, Jiaojiang River, Yangtze River, and Oujiang River exhibited considerable to moderate ecological risks and low toxic risk. PMF model analysis results reveal that concentrations of Cr, Ni, and As were closely related with natural geogenic input (36.56 %), while industrial and traffic activities (48.77 %) were primary source of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg, and main source of Cd was agricultural emissions (14.67 %).

Elemental geochemical evidence for the river-derived sources of trace metals in surface sediments from Hangzhou Bay, East China Sea

Coastal estuaries are often heavily subject to riverine influences by the inputs of sediment from terrestrial sources. Hangzhou Bay (HZB) is threatened by the riverine derived trace metals from two large rivers of Qiantang River (QTR) and Yangtze River (YZR). However, previous studies mainly focused on the incidental transport from the largest river in China (YZR) and failed to simultaneously evaluate the contributions of these two rivers, especially the directly flowing river of QTR, by their trace elemental geochemical composition and distribution. Herein, a comprehensive study identified the river-derived sources of multiple trace metals in surface sediments which transported from both of the rivers. The sampling stations were separated into three regions of YZR, HZB, and QTR based on their spatial distributions of sediment grain size and components. The significant variations for most of the trace metals concentrations, except for Cd, Th, and U, were found among three regions (χ2 ≥ 8.22, p ≤ 0.016). The highest concentrations in HZB were mainly resulted from the grain size effect (68.82% of the total variance), while the highest concentrations of Sr, Cd, and Ba in YZR and Zr and Hf in QTR were attributed to the anthropogenic source (11.90%) and mineral composition (6.21%) of river basins. After normalized the diversity of multiple trace metals concentrations and the influence of grain size by ratios of Igeo and EFLi, three regions were effectively distinguished. It was indicated that As, Cd, and Sb were enriched in the sediments of rivers by anthropogenic source (EFLi > 1.5 and/or Igeo > 1). The results evidenced that, after removing the influence of grain size, elemental geochemical composition of the surface sediments confidently identified the river-derived anthropogenic sources of the enriched trace metals from two major rivers, and largely from YZR.

Potential risk assessment and occurrence characteristic of heavy metals based on artificial neural network model along the Yangtze River Estuary, China

Pollution from heavy metals in estuaries poses potential risks to the aquatic environment and public health. The complexity of the estuarine water environment limits the accurate understanding of its pollution prediction. Field observations were conducted at seven sampling sites along the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) during summer, autumn, and winter 2021 to analyze the concentrations of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn) in water and surface sediments. The order of heavy metal concentrations in water samples from highest to lowest was Zn > As > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd, while that in surface sediments samples was Zn > Cr > As > Ni > Pb > Cu > Cd. Human health risk assessment of the heavy metals in water samples indicated a chronic and carcinogenic risk associated with As. The risks of heavy metals in surface sediments were evaluated using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (RI). Among the seven heavy metals, As and Cd were highly polluted, with Cd being the main contributor to potential ecological risks. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the sources of the different heavy metals, revealing that As originated primarily from anthropogenic emissions, while Cd was primarily from atmospheric deposition. To further analyze the influence of water quality indicators on heavy metal pollution, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was utilized. A modified model was proposed, incorporating biochemical parameters to predict the level of heavy metal pollution, achieving an accuracy of 95.1%. This accuracy was 22.5% higher than that of the traditional model and particularly effective in predicting the maximum 20% of values. Results in this paper highlight the pollution of As and Cd along the YRE, and the proposed model provides valuable information for estimating heavy metal pollution in estuarine water environments, facilitating pollution prevention efforts.

Microbial strategies for copper pollution remediation: Mechanistic insights and recent advances

Environmental contamination is aninsistent concern affecting human health and the ecosystem. Wastewater, containing heavy metals from industrial activities, significantly contributes to escalating water pollution. These metals can bioaccumulate in food chains, posing health risks even at low concentrations. Copper (Cu), an essential micronutrient, becomes toxic at high levels. Activities like mining and fungicide use have led to Copper contamination in soil, water, and sediment beyond safe levels. Copper widely used in industries, demands restraint of heavy metal ion release into wastewater for ecosystem ultrafiltration, membrane filtration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, combat heavy metal pollution, with emphasis on copper.Physical and chemical approaches are efficient, large-scale feasibility may have drawbackssuch as they are costly, result in the production of sludge. In contrast, bioremediation, microbial intervention offers eco-friendly solutions for copper-contaminated soil. Bacteria and fungi facilitate these bioremediation avenues as cost-effective alternatives. This review article emphasizes on physical, chemical, and biological methods for removal of copper from the wastewater as well asdetailing microorganism's mechanisms to mobilize or immobilize copper in wastewater and soil.

Research in China about the biological mechanisms that potentially link socioenvironmental changes and mental health: a scoping review

China's rapid socioeconomic development since 1990 makes it a fitting location to summarise research about how biological changes associated with socioenvironmental changes affect population mental health and, thus, lay the groundwork for subsequent, more focused studies. An initial search identified 308 review articles in the international literature about biomarkers associated with 12 common mental health disorders. We then searched for studies conducted in China that assessed the association of the identified mental health related-biomarkers with socioenvironmental factors in English-language and Chinese-language databases. We located 1330 articles published between 1 January 1990 and 1 August 2021 that reported a total of 3567 associations between 56 specific biomarkers and 11 socioenvironmental factors: 3156 (88·5%) about six types of environmental pollution, 381 (10·7%) about four health-related behaviours (diet, physical inactivity, internet misuse, and other lifestyle factors), and 30 (0·8%) about socioeconomic inequity. Only 245 (18·4%) of the papers simultaneously considered the possible effect of the biomarkers on mental health conditions; moreover, most of these studies assessed biomarkers in animal models of mental disorders, not human subjects. Among the 245 papers, mental health conditions were linked with biomarkers of environmental pollution in 188 (76·7%), with biomarkers of health-related behaviours in 48 (19·6%), and with biomarkers of socioeconomic inequality in 9 (3·7%). The 604 biomarker-mental health condition associations reported (107 in human subjects and 497 in animal models) included 379 (62·7%) about cognitive functioning, 117 (19·4%) about anxiety, 56 (9·3%) about depression, 21 (3·5%) about neurodevelopmental conditions, and 31 (5·1%) about neurobehavioural symptoms. Improved understanding of the biological mechanisms linking socioenvironmental changes to community mental health will require expanding the range of socioenvironmental factors considered, including mental health outcomes in more of the studies about the association of biomarkers with socioenvironmental factors, and increasing the proportion of studies that assess mental health outcomes in humans.

Transcriptome Analysis and Identification of Cadmium-Induced Oxidative Stress Response Genes in Different Meretrix meretrix Developmental Stages

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the major pollutants in the aquatic environment, and it can easily accumulate in aquatic animals and result in toxic effects by changing the metabolism of the body, causing a serious impact on the immune system, reproductive system, and the development of offspring. The clam Meretrix meretrix is one of the commercially important species that is cultivated in large-scale aquaculture in China. To elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of Cd2+ in the developmental processes, fertilized eggs and larvae of M. meretrix at different developmental stages were exposed to Cd2+ (27.2 mg L-1 in natural seawater) or just natural seawater without Cd2+ (control), and high-throughput transcriptome sequencing and immunohistochemistry techniques were used to analyze the toxic effects of Cd on larvae at different early developmental stages. The results revealed 31,914 genes were differentially expressed in the different stages of M. meretrix development upon treatment with Cd2+. Ten of these genes were differentially expressed in all stages of development examined, but they comprised only six unigenes (CCO, Ndh, HPX, A2M, STF, and pro-C3), all of which were related to the oxidative stress response. Under Cd exposure, the expression levels of CCO and Ndh were significantly upregulated in D-shaped and pediveliger larvae, while pro-C3 expression was significantly upregulated in the fertilized egg, D-shaped larva, and pediveliger. Moreover, HPX, A2M, and STF expression levels in the fertilized egg and pediveliger larvae were also significantly upregulated. In contrast, CCO, Ndh, HPX, A2M, STF, and pro-C3 expression levels in the postlarva were all downregulated under Cd exposure. Besides the genes with changes in expression identified by the transcriptome, the expression of two other oxidative stress-related genes (MT and Nfr2) was also found to change significantly in the different developmental stages of M. meretrix upon Cd exposure, confirming their roles in combating oxidative stress. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that Cd would interfere with cellular respiration, ion transport, and immune response through inducing oxidative stress, and changes in the expression of oxidative stress-related genes might be an important step for M. meretrix to deal with the adverse effects of Cd at different stages of its development.

The association of serum toxic metals and essential elements during early pregnancy with body mass index trajectory of infants during the first years: A prospective study

To the best of our knowledge, prior research has yet to delve into the combined and interactive relationships between maternal exposure to essential elements and toxic metals and infancy's continuous growth and trajectories. This study aims to discern infant growth trajectories in the first year of life and to determine the associations of maternal serum levels of essential elements and toxic metals with growth trajectory. Within a Chinese prospective cohort in 2019 - 2021, 407 mother-infant pairs were included, and the serum levels of five essential elements (zinc, calcium, copper, magnesium and iron) and two toxic metals (cadmium and lead) in early pregnancy were assessed. The growth trajectory of infants was followed until age one year. Raw BMI and height values were transformed to age- and sex-specific BMI and height standard deviation (SD) scores. Latent-class group-based trajectory models and piecewise linear mixed regression were estimated to determine infant growth trajectories and growth velocity, respectively. The individual relationship between maternal metallic element levels and infant growth trajectory was examined using multinomial logistic regression models and linear mixed regression, while joint associations and interactive relationships were explored using Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) following confounder adjustments. Four distinct trajectory patterns based on BMI-z score (low-rapid BMI gain group, normal-stable BMI group, very low-rapid BMI gain group and normal-rapid BMI gain group) and length-for-age (high-stable length group, low-stable length group, normal-rapid length gain group, very low-rapid length gain group) were identified during the first year post-birth, respectively. In single-metal and multiple-metal models, infants born to mothers with higher serum Zn and lower serum Cu levels were associated with a normal-rapid BMI gain trajectory during the first year. Serum Cu exhibited a positive correlation with the rate of BMI change solely in infants aged 6-12 months. Further, the BKMR analysis revealed a statistically significant and negative joint effect of the five essential elements on the likelihood of normal-rapid BMI/length gain trajectory when serum levels of these elements fell below the 70th percentile compared to median levels. In addition, high levels of serum copper and calcium interactively affect the rates of BMI change during 6-12 months old (β: -0.21, 95% CI: -0.44, -0.03, P = 0.04, P-interaction=0.04). In conclusion, maternal trace elements at early pregnancy are linked to infant growth patterns and growth velocity in the first year of life.

Accumulation and transport of nutrient and pollutant elements in riparian soils, sediments, and river waters across the Thames River Watershed, Connecticut, USA

Understanding drivers of nutrient and pollutant elements (NPEs) in soils, sediments, and river water is important for protecting water resources and aquatic ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to quantify accumulation and transport of NPEs (P, As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in riparian soils, sediments, river water, and watershed-scale exports within seven post-industrial subwatersheds of the Thames River, Connecticut, USA. Suspended sediments and river water samples were collected from February 2019 to January 2020. Arsenic concentrations in soil (6 to 18 mg kg-1) and sediments (8 to 85 mg kg-1) generally exceeded state and federal EPA quality targets but not river water. Elevated Pb 'hot spots' occurred in some riparian soils (>2000 mg kg-1) and sediments (>200 mg kg-1), but the other NPEs concentrations were below toxic thresholds. Riparian soil concentrations and watershed land cover were generally weak predictors for NPE concentrations in bottom sediments, suspended sediments, and river water. DOC, Mn, and Fe concentrations were important predictors for area-normalized dissolved and sediment-bound export of NPEs across the seven watersheds. Dissolved export was greater than sediment export for Mn, P, As, Cd, Cu, and Ni but not for Fe, Pb, and Zn. Watersheds with higher farmland had higher P river water concentrations, but the larger, more urbanized watershed had the highest total and area-normalized P export. An estuarine sediment core that captures sediment from the whole watershed and spans pre-industrial conditions through present shows that export of most NPEs has decreased since its peak, but all remain above baseline throughout the Thames River watershed. Future constraints on surface soil-river exchange and erosion inputs are needed to investigate rates of NPE sourcing to the watersheds.

Blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier permeability of metals/metalloids and its determinants in pediatric patients

Concerns regarding adverse effects of metal/metalloids exposure on brain development and neurological disorders among children are increasing. However, the transport patterns of metals/metalloids across the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) need to be clarified in children. A total of 99 Chinese pediatric patients were enrolled from February 2020 to August 2021, with a median age of 6.76 months. We detected 16 metal/metalloid levels in matched serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The BCSFB permeability of metals/metalloids were estimated and the potential effects of biomedical parameters were explored. Most metals/metalloids were detectable among > 80.0% of CSF samples. Significant correlations were observed between strontium (Sr, r = 0.46), molybdenum (Mo, r = 0.50), and cadmium (Cd, r = 0.24) concentrations in serum and CSF (P < 0.05). Ratios of metal/metalloid levels in CSF to serum (Rmetal) ranged from 0.02 to 0.74, and hazardous metals/metalloids including arsenic (As), Cd, lead (Pb), thallium (Tl), and manganese (Mn) showed high transfer efficiencies across the BCSFB (Rmetals > 0.5). With the adjustment of age and sex, albumin, β2-microglobulin, and total protein levels in CSF were positively associated with copper (Cu) permeability (FDR-adjusted P < 0.05), while glucose in CSF was negatively correlated with calcium (Ca), Cu, Sr, and Mo BCSFB permeability (FDR-adjusted P < 0.05). Q-Alb promoted Cu permeability across the BCSFB (FDR-adjusted P < 0.001), while C-reactive protein levels in serum were positively associated with selenium (Se) permeability (FDR-adjusted P = 0.046). For the first time, our findings provided data for the BCSFB permeability of 16 metals/metalloids in children, and indicated that some biomedical parameters could influence the transformation of metals/metalloids from serum to CSF. Metals/metalloids with strong BCSFB permeability warrant attention for their potential neurotoxicity.

Distribution, contamination assessment, and sources of heavy metals in surface sediments from the south of the North Yellow Sea, China

This paper reports the contents of six heavy metals and particle sizes in the surface sediments of 120 sampling stations in the southern North Yellow Sea to reveal heavy metal distribution characteristics, contamination assessment, and sources. Cu and Cr enrichments were mainly found in coastal areas with high mud content (silt and clay). However, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg were enriched in Weihai Bay and Dongpu Bay, which have denser populations, estuaries, and shipyards. The geoaccumulation index and principal component analysis showed that Cu and Cr contamination was low, and the sources were mainly natural processes. In addition, Zn and Cd pollution in the nearshore area was moderate, and its provenance was natural processes and human activity. However, most areas exhibited Pb and Hg contamination due to waterborne traffic and industries, including shipbuilding and gold mining.

Co-exposure of microplastics and heavy metals in the marine environment and remediation techniques: a comprehensive review

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are significant pollutants in the marine environment, necessitating effective remediation strategies to prevent their release into the sea through sewage and industrial effluent. This comprehensive review explores the current understanding of the co-exposure of MPs and heavy metal-enriched MPs, highlighting the need for effective remediation methods. Various mechanisms, including surface ion complexation, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces, contribute to the adsorption of heavy metals onto MPs, with factors like surface area and environmental exposure duration playing crucial roles. Additionally, biofilm formation on MPs alters their chemical properties, influencing metal adsorption behaviors. Different thermodynamic models are used to explain the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals on MPs. The adsorption process is influenced by various factors, including the morphological characteristics of MPs, their adsorption capacity, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the desorption of heavy metals from MPs has implications for their bioavailability and poses risks to marine organisms, emphasizing the importance of source reduction and remedial measures. Hybrid approaches that combine both conventional and modern technologies show promise for the efficient removal of MPs and heavy metals from marine environments. This review identifies critical gaps in existing research that should be addressed in future studies including standardized sampling methods to ensure accurate data, further investigation into the specific interactions between MPs and metals, and the development of hybrid technologies at an industrial scale. Overall, this review sheds light on the adsorption and desorption mechanisms of heavy metal-enriched MPs, underscoring the necessity of implementing effective remediation strategies.

Research on a Multimodel Fusion Diagnosis Method for Evaporation Ducts in the East China Sea

Evaporation ducts are abnormal states of the atmosphere in the air-sea boundary layer that directly affect the propagation trajectory of electromagnetic (EM) waves. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis of the evaporation duct height (EDH) is important for studying the propagation trajectory of EM waves in evaporation ducts. Most evaporation duct models (EDMs) based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory are empirical methods. Different EDMs have different levels of environmental adaptability. Evaporation duct diagnosis methods based on machine learning methods only consider the mathematical relationship between data and do not explore the physical mechanism of evaporation ducts. To solve the above problems, this study observed the meteorological and hydrological parameters of the five layers of the low-altitude atmosphere in the East China Sea on board the research vessel Xiangyanghong 18 in April 2021 and obtained the atmospheric refractivity profile. An evaporation duct multimodel fusion diagnosis method (MMF) based on a library for support vector machines (LIBSVM) is proposed. First, based on the observed meteorological and hydrological data, the differences between the EDH diagnosis results of different EDMs and MMF were analyzed. When ASTD ≥ 0, the average errors of the diagnostic results of BYC, NPS, NWA, NRL, LKB, and MMF are 2.57 m, 2.92 m, 2.67 m, 3.27 m, 2.57 m, and 0.24 m, respectively. When ASTD < 0, the average errors are 2.95 m, 2.94 m, 2.98 m, 2.99 m, 2.97 m, and 0.41 m, respectively. Then, the EM wave path loss accuracy analysis was performed on the EDH diagnosis results of the NPS model and the MMF. When ASTD ≥ 0, the average path loss errors of the NPS model and MMF are 5.44 dB and 2.74 dB, respectively. When ASTD < 0, the average errors are 5.21 dB and 3.46 dB, respectively. The results show that the MMF is suitable for EDH diagnosis, and the diagnosis accuracy is higher than other models.

Health risk assessment of dietary cadmium intake in children aged 2-17 years in East China

Food is the main way for people to be exposed to heavy metal cadmium (Cd), and Cd pollution will affect human health. In this paper, exposure and health risk assessment of dietary Cd intake were conducted in children aged 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years in East China. The results showed that the total exposure of dietary Cd intake in children exceeded the standard limits. The total exposure of all age groups were 1.11 × 10-3, 1.15 × 10-3, 9.67 × 10-4, 8.75 × 10-4, 9.18 × 10-4, 7.75 × 10-4, 8.24 × 10-4, 7.11 × 10-4 mg kg-1 d-1, respectively, and the highest was the children aged 3 years. The hazard quotients of children aged 2 and 3 years were 1.11 and 1.15, respectively, at an unacceptable health risk level. The hazard quotients of dietary Cd intake in children of other ages were less than 1, at an acceptable health risk level. Staple foods were the most significant contributor to the dietary Cd intake in children, and the contribution ratio of non-carcinogenic risk of dietary Cd intake in all age groups were more than 35%, the proportion of non-carcinogenic risk in children aged 6-8 and 9-11 years were as high as 50%. This study provides scientific basis for the health of children in East China.

Environmental profile, potential sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a typical coastal bay and outer bay area

As a class of persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely present and accumulate in multimedia environments. The pollution characteristics, spatiotemporal distribution, potential sources, influencing factors, and ecological risks of 16 PAHs were investigated in the water-sediment system of the Hangzhou Bay and outer bay area (HZB and OBA, respectively). The total concentrations of 16 PAHs (∑_PAHs) were 220 ± 97.0 and 130 ± 36.0 ng/L in the seawater and 343 ± 179 and 505 ± 415 μg/kg (dry weight) in the sediments of the HZB and OBA, respectively. The pollution level of PAHs in the HZB seawater was higher than that in the OBA seawater, but the opposite result was found in the sediments. Moreover, ∑_PAHs exhibited high temporal variability in the HZB seawater (rainy season > dry season), whereas ∑_PAHs in the sediments showed no significant difference between seasons. The molecular diagnostic ratio method was used to identify pollution sources and showed that the PAHs in seawater came from different pollution sources (fuel combustion and petroleum), whereas the PAHs in the sediments originated from coincident sources (mixed combustion). Correlation analysis revealed that temperature was positively related to ∑_PAHs, whereas salinity was negatively related to seawater ∑_PAHs values. Ecological risk assessment demonstrated that the potential for adverse ecological effects was low to moderate in seawater but moderate to high in the sediments.

The Expression of the StNRAMP2 Gene Determined the Accumulation of Cadmium in Different Tissues of Potato

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal that threatens human health when enriched in crops. NRAMPs are a family of natural macrophage proteins reported to play a key role in Cd transport in plants. In order to explore the gene regulation mechanism of potato under Cd stress and the role of NRAMPs family in it, this study analyzed the gene expression differences of two different Cd accumulation levels in potato after 7 days of 50 mg/kg Cd stress and screened out the key genes that may play a major role in the differential accumulation of Cd in different varieties. Additionally, StNRAMP2 was selected for verification. Further verification showed that the StNRAMP2 gene plays an important role in the accumulation of Cd in potato. Interestingly, silencing StNRAMP2 increased Cd accumulation in tubers but significantly decreased Cd accumulation in other sites, suggesting a critical role of StNRAMP2 in Cd uptake and transport in potatoes. To further confirm this conclusion, we performed heterologous expression experiments in which overexpression of StNRAMP2 gene in tomato resulted in a threefold increase in Cd content, which further confirmed the important role of StNRAMP2 in the process of Cd accumulation compared with wild-type plants. In addition, we found that the addition of Cd to the soil increased the activity of the plant antioxidant enzyme system, and silencing StNRAMP2 partially reversed this effect. This suggests that the StNRAMP2 gene plays an important role in plant stress tolerance, and future studies could further explore the role of this gene in other environmental stresses. In conclusion, the results of this study improve the understanding of the mechanism of Cd accumulation in potato and provide experimental basis for remediation of Cd pollution.

Heavy metals (HMs) pollution in the aquatic environment: Role of probiotics and gut microbiota in HMs remediation

The presence of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic ecosystems is a universal concern due to their tendency to accumulate in aquatic organisms. HMs accumulation has been found to cause toxic effects in aquatic organisms. The common HMs-induced toxicities are growth inhibition, reduced survival, oxidative stress, tissue damage, respiratory problems, and gut microbial dysbiosis. The application of dietary probiotics has been evolving as a potential approach to bind and remove HMs from the gut, which is called "Gut remediation". The toxic effects of HMs in fish, mice, and humans with the potential of probiotics in removing HMs have been discussed previously. However, the toxic effects of HMs and protective strategies of probiotics on the organisms of each trophic level have not been comprehensively reviewed yet. Thus, this review summarizes the toxic effects caused by HMs in the organisms (at each trophic level) of the aquatic food chain, with a special reference to gut microbiota. The potential of bacterial probiotics in toxicity alleviation and their protective strategies to prevent toxicities caused by HMs in them are also explained. The dietary probiotics are capable of removing HMs (50-90%) primarily from the gut of the organisms. Specifically, probiotics have been reported to reduce the absorption of HMs in the intestinal tract via the enhancement of intestinal HM sequestration, detoxification of HMs, changing the expression of metal transporter proteins, and maintaining the gut barrier function. The probiotic is recommended as a novel strategy to minimize aquaculture HMs toxicity and safe human health.

Among Gerontogens, Heavy Metals Are a Class of Their Own: A Review of the Evidence for Cellular Senescence

Advancements in modern medicine have improved the quality of life across the globe and increased the average lifespan of our population by multiple decades. Current estimates predict by 2030, 12% of the global population will reach a geriatric age and live another 3-4 decades. This swelling geriatric population will place critical stress on healthcare infrastructures due to accompanying increases in age-related diseases and comorbidities. While much research focused on long-lived individuals seeks to answer questions regarding how to age healthier, there is a deficit in research investigating what aspects of our lives accelerate or exacerbate aging. In particular, heavy metals are recognized as a significant threat to human health with links to a plethora of age-related diseases, and have widespread human exposures from occupational, medical, or environmental settings. We believe heavy metals ought to be classified as a class of gerontogens (i.e., chemicals that accelerate biological aging in cells and tissues). Gerontogens may be best studied through their effects on the "Hallmarks of Aging", nine physiological hallmarks demonstrated to occur in aged cells, tissues, and bodies. Evidence suggests that cellular senescence-a permanent growth arrest in cells-is one of the most pertinent hallmarks of aging and is a useful indicator of aging in tissues. Here, we discuss the roles of heavy metals in brain aging. We briefly discuss brain aging in general, then expand upon observations for heavy metals contributing to age-related neurodegenerative disorders. We particularly emphasize the roles and observations of cellular senescence in neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, we discuss the observations for heavy metals inducing cellular senescence. The glaring lack of knowledge about gerontogens and gerontogenic mechanisms necessitates greater research in the field, especially in the context of the global aging crisis.

Contamination, sources and health risks of potentially toxic elements in the coastal multimedia environment of South China

Coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which pose a threat to marine ecosystems and human health. In this study, the concentrations of eight PTEs in a typical area of South China were analysed, and their distributions, seasonal variations, pollution degrees, potential health risks and sources in seawater, sediment and organisms were evaluated. The comprehensive pollution index (CPI), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (PERI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) were applied to assess seawater, sediment and organism quality, respectively. The annual mean concentrations of Zn, Hg, Cr and As in the bottom seawater were higher than those in the surface water while those of Pb, Mn and Cu were higher in the surface seawater. The mean content of Hg was higher than the corresponding background value of that in China Shelf Sea sediment. Marine organisms have a high enrichment capacity for Cu, Zn, Cr, Hg, As and Mn in seawater. Based on CPI, the seawater was generally not polluted by PTEs. The PLI and PERI results demonstrated that Hg was the main contamination element in surface sediment. The total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) analysis illustrated that long-term consumption of some fish by children poses a noncarcinogenic health risk, while that risk to adults is negligible. Natural sources, agricultural activity sources, coal burning and industrial emission sources were the main sources of the PTEs in surface sediments according to positive matrix factorization (PMF) model.

Effects of microplastic combined with Cr(III) on apoptosis and energy pathway of coral endosymbiont

The combined effect of polyethylene (PE) microplastics and chromium (Cr(III)) on the scleractinian coral Acropora pruinosa (A. pruinosa) was investigated. The endpoints analysed in this study included the endosymbiont density, the chlorophyll a + c content, and the activity of enzymes involved in apoptosis (caspase-1, caspase-3), glycolysis (lactate dehydrogenase, LDH), the pentose phosphate pathway (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, G6PDH) and electron transfer coenzyme (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, NAD⁺/NADH). During the 7-day exposure to PE and Cr(III) stress, the endosymbiont density and chlorophyll content decreased gradually. The caspase-1 and caspase-3 activities increased in the high-concentration Cr(III) exposure group. Furthermore, the LDH and G6PDH activities decreased significantly, and the NAD⁺/NADH was decreased significantly. In summary, the results showed that PE and Cr(III) stress inhibited the endosymbiont energy metabolism enzymes and further led to endosymbiont apoptosis in coral. In addition, under exposure to the combination of stressors, when the concentration of Cr(III) remained at 1 × 10^-2 mg/L, the toxic effects of heavy metals on the endosymbiont were temporarily relieved with elevated PE concentrations. In contrast, when coral polyps were exposed to 5 mg/L PE and increasing Cr(III) concentrations, their metabolic activities were seriously disturbed, which increased the burden of energy consumption. In the short term, the toxic effect of Cr(III) was more obvious than that of PE because Cr(III) exposure leads to endosymbiont apoptosis and irreversible damage. This is the first study to provide insights into the combined effect of microplastic and Cr(III) stress on the apoptosis and energy pathways of coral endosymbionts. This study suggested that microplastics combined with Cr(III) are an important factor affecting the apoptosis and energy metabolism of endosymbionts, accelerating the collapse of the balance between the coral host and symbiotic endosymbiont.

Removal of Copper Ions from Wastewater: A Review

Copper pollution of the world's water resources is becoming increasingly serious and poses a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. With reported copper concentrations in wastewater ranging from approximately 2.5 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L, a summary of remediation techniques for different contamination scenarios is essential. Therefore, it is important to develop low-cost, feasible, and sustainable wastewater removal technologies. Various methods for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater have been extensively studied in recent years. This paper reviews the current methods used to treat Cu(II)-containing wastewater and evaluates these technologies and their health effects. These technologies include membrane separation, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, electrochemistry, adsorption, and biotechnology. Thus, in this paper, we review the efforts and technological advances made so far in the pursuit of more efficient removal and recovery of Cu(II) from industrial wastewater and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each technology in terms of research prospects, technical bottlenecks, and application scenarios. Meanwhile, this study points out that achieving low health risk effluent through technology coupling is the focus of future research.

Microplastics existence affected heavy metal affinity to ferrihydrite as a representative sediment mineral

The coexistence of minerals, heavy metals and microplastics in sediment has been widely reported, while the interactions between minerals and heavy metals may be affected by the presence of microplastics. Therefore, to elucidate the effect of microplastics on the interactions between heavy metals and sediment minerals, this study conducted a series of experiments using polystyrene (PS) microplastics, Pb/Cr/Cd and ferrihydrite (Fh). The presence of PS microplastics with ferrihydrite (Fh-MPs200, mass ratio of ferrihydrite to PS of 200:1) improved the adsorption capacity of ferrihydrite, especially with an increase of 36 % for Pb. Morphological characterization demonstrated that the nano-ferrihydrite particles were dispersed on the surface of the PS microplastics, increasing the available reaction sites of the ferrihydrite particles. Furthermore, the results of zeta potential and pH effect showed that the reduction in electrostatic repulsion after adding PS was another critical reason for the increase in Pb adsorption by Fh-MP200. As a result, the presence of PS microplastics enhanced the complexation of Pb ions and the hydroxyl groups on the ferrihydrite surface. This study demonstrated that the presence of microplastics in the sedimentary environment can alter the dispersion and surface properties of minerals, thereby affecting the accumulation and transportation of heavy metals at the water-sediment interface.

Influence of biodeposition by suspended cultured oyster on the distributions of trace elements in multiple media in a semi-enclosed bay of China

It remains unclear how the suspended non-fed bivalve mariculture will alter the coastal transfer and cleaning process of trace elements, the non-degradable contaminants, which have been reported to accumulate in sediment from bivalve mariculture areas. Herein, we set up a field in situ comparative test in the suspended oyster (Crassostrea plicatula) farming area (OF) and reference area (RA) of Xiangshan Bay to verify our hypothesis that the biodepositon of suspended oysters would consolidate trace elements from the water column and transport them to the sediment. Distribution of trace elements in multiple media of biodeposits (BDs), settling particles (SPs), sediments (SEs), and seawater demonstrate that the accelerated deposition of BDs which enriched trace elements from the water column by oysters filtering suspended particles led to trace elements accumulation in SEs from OF. Additionally, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn were strongly regulated by this process with significant (p < 0.05) higher concentrations in SEs from OF (10.96, 0.20, 13.98, 82.40, 38.47, 38.22, 108.57, and 111.20 μg/g, repectively) than those from RA (9.43, 0.13, 11.76, 63.30, 30.34, 29.55, 86.59, and 100.24 μg/g, repectively), but the extent was different for Mn, Mo, Pb, and W with concentrations in SEs from OF (737.37, 0.81, 30.98, and 3.96 μg/g, repectively) and RA (765.25, 0.69, 31.27, and 3.34 μg/g, repectively), especially for Rb and Sr with concentrations in SEs from OF (131.13 and 96.24 μg/g, repectively) and RA (142.21 and 161.10 μg/g, repectively), due to their geochemical and geophysical properties. Moreover, the harvest of hyper-accumulated oysters as a sink for removing trace elements from water column cannot hide the impact of this process.

Spatiotemporal variations of heavy metal historical accumulation records and their influencing mechanisms in the Yangtze River Estuary

Complex transformations of heavy metals in the mega-river-estuary continuum limit our understanding of their pollution history. This study investigated sedimentary compositions of heavy metals, major elements, total organic carbon, grain size, and radionuclides to study spatiotemporal variations in heavy metal accumulation patterns and their controlling mechanisms in four sediment cores (E1-E4) from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). Results show that only E3 in the distal YRE front mirrors well the heavy metal pollution history due to its continuous deposition in a stable sedimentary environment, while E1 and E2 record the influence of riverine and estuarine projects and processes apparently. E1 in the proximal YRE front registers intense human disturbance through sediment dredging and dumping activities to produce a thick layer of abnormal low 210Pbex and minor heavy metal concentrations. E2 in the intermediate YRE front demonstrates the recently increasing influence of reduced sediment discharge by its upcore coarsening trend with decreased heavy metal concentrations. Flood and storm events left different imprints in core sediments of E2 and E3 by their coarse stratal units with fewer heavy metal concentrations. The source analysis indicates that heavy metals in estuarine sediments mainly come from natural processes but are significantly affected by human activities. A direct linkage of the heavy metal accumulation history with the socioeconomic development in recent decades is found by a comparison study of core data from the tidal river to the estuary, albeit with a remarkable spatiotemporal difference, which is jointly determined by grain size, offshore distance, hydrodynamic condition, depositional status, and sedimentation rate besides estuarine processes. This warns us to carefully interpret the heavy metal history from single or sparse core data in a mega estuary system with intense natural forces and human disturbances analogous to the YRE.

Ecological risk assessment of metal and hydrocarbon pollution in sediments from an urban tropical estuary: Tijuca lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Urban tropical lagoons are often impacted by eutrophication, metal, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination, but the toxicity of their bottom sediments is still poorly investigated in South America. Aiming to contribute to filling this gap, a sediment quality assessment was conducted in the Tijuca Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) using different lines of evidence (LOEs) including sediment characterization, determination of metals and PAHs, and acute toxicity testing with burrowing amphipods (Tiburonella viscana). Mud and organic matter contents played a crucial role in contaminant distribution along the lagoon. The concentrations of PAH were generally low (mean ΣPAH = 795.42 ± 1146.2 ng/g; n = 23), but a contamination hotspot of light PAH compounds was identified. Such PAHs were mainly pyrolytic, probably related to the deposition of atmospheric pollution, although petrogenic compounds also occur in the lagoon. The data indicated the occurrence of geochemical anomalies of Zn, Cu, Pb, and Hg (mean values = 176.9 ± 91.6, 45.1 ± 21.3, 35.2 ± 15.0, 0.1442 ± 0.0893 mg/kg, respectively; n = 23), probably associated with industrial wastes, garbage deposition, urban runoff, and domestic sewage contributions. The mortality of T. viscana was significant for more than 85% of the samples (mean mortality = 70.3 ± 26.0%; n = 23), but it was not significantly correlated with PAH and metal concentrations. On the other side, domestic sewage contributions and eutrophication seem to play a relevant role in sediment toxicity. Actually, the toxicity observed in the tests seems to be due to the simultaneous influence of multiple toxicants and their combined effects on the organisms. Such stressors may include not only metals, PAH, and eutrophication but also chemicals not evaluated in this study, such as hormones, pharmaceuticals and personal care compounds, perfluorocompounds, detergents, and others.

Dissolved metal assessment in surface seawater: A spatial-seasonal evaluation in the Zhejiang coastal waters, the East China Sea

The spatial-seasonal distributions and variations, correlations with environmental variables and the pollution degrees of dissolved metals in the Zhejiang coastal seawater were investigated. The concentrations of six dissolved metals (i.e. Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, As and Hg) were in the ranges of 0.10-6.40 (1.6 ± 0.8), 0.16-3.60 (1.2 ± 0.7), 2.50-24.0 (8.5 ± 4.8), 0.011-0.180 (0.07 ± 0.03), 0.85-4.20 (2.1 ± 0.8) and 0.001-0.110 (0.06 ± 0.02) μg/L, throughout the four seasons, respectively. Significant differences in all the dissolved metals were found among seasons, whereas no significant differences were found among stations. The average concentrations of metals were in the following order: Zn > As>Cu > Pb > Cd > Hg. Single metal contamination factor was in the following order: Pb > Hg > Zn > Cu > As>Cd. The pollution level of dissolved metals in the Zhejiang coastal waters (ZCW) was low. Most of the dissolved metals were correlated to temperature, indicating seasonal differences. The redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that depth, temperature, nitrate and phosphate could best explain the variance pattern of dissolved metals in the ZCW.

Integrative analysis uncovers response mechanism of Pirata subpiraticus to chronic cadmium stress

Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution is global environmental pollution and adversely affects paddy field organisms. Wolf spider grants a new insight to evaluate the toxicity triggered by Cd, yet the impact of chronic Cd exposure on the spider and its molecular mechanism remains unclear. The present study found that the wolf spider Pirata subpiraticus fed with Cd-accumulated flies for 5 weeks presented lower catalase, peroxidase, and acetylcholinesterase activities and higher malonaldehyde content than the control spiders (p < 0.05). An in-depth transcriptomic analysis yielded a total of 5995 differentially expressed genes (DEGs, with 3857 up-regulated and 2138 down-regulated genes) from the comparison, and 19 DEGs encoding three enzymatic indicators were down-regulated. Further enrichment analysis indicated that Cd stress could inhibit the expression of cuticle and chitin-encoding genes via the down-regulation of several key enzymes, such as chitin synthase, glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate transaminase, and chitinase. In addition, our findings suggested that hedgehog and FoxO signaling pathways might play an essential role in regulating survival, cell cycle, and autophagy process in spiders, which were primarily down-regulated under Cd stress. An intensely interactive network displayed that Cd exposure could repress key biological processes in P. subpiraticus, particularly peptide metabolic process and peptide biosynthetic process. To sum up, this integrative investigation confirmed an effective bioindicator for assessing Cd-induced toxicity; provided a mass of genes, proteins, and enzymes for further validation; and granted novel perspectives to uncover the molecular responses of spiders to Cd pollution.

Spatiotemporal Variation of Surface Sediment Quality in the Xiamen Sea Area, China

The study analyzes the survey data on the surface sediments in 355 stations in Xiamen Sea area during 2004-2006, 2007-2009, 2010-2013, and 2014-2016. The result finds that contents of TOC, sulfide, and oils in the surface sediments were generally low but showed significant spatial differences (p < 0.05) in most cases, with TOC in the West Sea area (WS) staying significantly higher than other sea areas. Xiamen Sea area suffered universal heavy metal pollution mainly from Cu and Zn for years in the WS, the Jiulong River Estuary (JE), and the East Sea area (ES), and the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) exhibited significant spatial differences across the four periods (p < 0.05). With the source of heavy metals in the WS being mainly related to human activities, Cu and Zn were related to the development of port shipping and Pb to aquaculture. The heavy metal pollution in JE was mainly related to the input of rivers emptying into the sea. The high Cu content in the ES was related to the direct discharge of massive domestic sewage into the sea at the time. From 2004 to 2016, the potential ecological risks of heavy metals in Xiamen Sea area stayed low.

The influence of anthropogenic activities on heavy metal pollution of estuary sediment from the coastal East China Sea in the past nearly 50 years

Historical records of eight heavy metals (HMs: Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Hg and Cd) were analyzed in two dated sediment cores collected from the coastal East China Sea (Meishan Bay, MSB) to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on estuary sediment from 1972 to 2019. The sedimentary records of HMs in the two cores reflected the development of economy and change of energy consumption in China's east coastal areas. The contents of most HMs in sediments had no change or showed a downward trend before the 1980s. After the 1980s, the contents of HMs showed an increasing trend, mainly because of the rapid development of aquaculture, industry, and agriculture. The distribution of HMs outside the bay (OB) was mainly affected by industry, shipping, and agriculture (vegetable planting), while HMs in sediments inside the bay (IB) was affected by shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that Cd, Cr, and Ni could be attributed to industrial discharge, while As, Cu, Pb, and Zn were associated with shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Sediments were slightly polluted with Cd (I_geo:0.10-0.71, CF:1.90-7.74) and Ni (I_geo:0.08-0.92, CF:1.25-12.55), and seriously polluted with Hg (I_geo:0.95-1.76, CF:13.43-85.65). This study provides insights for the local governments to raise awareness of HM pollution in the coastal East China Sea and formulate corresponding pollution control measures.

Toxic effect of nickel on microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bacillariophyceae)

Nickel acts as an essential trace nutrient or toxicant for organisms, depending on its concentration. The increased concentrations of nickel, due to anthropogenic activity, in the aquatic environment are potential threats to aquatic organisms. However, the knowledge on toxic mechanisms of nickel to microalgae remains incompletely understood. In the present study, we investigated the toxic effects of nickel in the cosmopolitan diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum via evaluation of physiological and transcriptome responses. The results showed that the median effective concentration-72 h (EC₅₀-72 h) and EC₅₀-96 h of nickel was 2.48 ± 0.33 and 1.85 ± 0.17 mg/L, respectively. The P. tricornutum cell abundance and photosynthesis significantly decreased by 1 mg/L of nickel. Results from photosynthetic parameters including efficiency of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/F₀), maximum photosynthetic efficiency of PS II (Fv/Fm), electron transport rate (ETR), actual photosynthetic efficiency of PS II (Y(II)), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and photochemical quenching (qP) indicated that OEC of PS II might be impaired by nickel. The transcriptome data also reveal that OEC apparatus coding gene PS II oxygen-evolving enhancer protein 2 (PsbP) was regulated by nickel. Moreover, induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and chlorophyll a content were also detected under nickel stress. Transcriptome analysis revealed that nickel affected a variety of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that involved in redox homeostasis, nitrogen metabolisms, fatty acids, and DNA metabolism. However, thiol-disulfide redox system might play important roles in nickel-induced oxidative stress resistance. This study improved the understanding of the toxic effect of nickel on the diatom P. tricornutum.

Pollution, risks, and sources of heavy metals in sediments from the urban rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay, China

The Haizhou Bay in eastern China, for a long time, is seriously polluted with heavy metals (HMs) due to intensive anthropic pressure. The river runoff is the dominant pathway of HM transport in the coastal region. However, the information on HM pollution in coastal rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay was still limited, and potential risks and possible sources raised by HMs in this area were neglected up to now. To fully understand the distribution and ecological risks of sediments in seven rivers along the bay, surface sediments were collected and seven HMs (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were investigated. The results showed that HM concentrations generally met the primary standard criteria of China (marine sediment quality), except for Cu and Zn. On the other hand, Zn and Cu tended to exhibit probable adverse biological effects in the Shawang River comparison with some sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). Moreover, the enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index demonstrated that there was no or slight contamination to be found for Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb and moderate pollution for Cd. The contamination factor (C_fⁱ), integrated contamination degree (CF), modified degree of contamination (_mC_d), and modified pollution index (MPI) revealed individual metal contamination in localized areas. In these river sediments, the potential ecological risk (RI) was low to moderate, except Cd posted a considerable ecological risk because of its high enrichment. Furthermore, the Shawang River and Linhong River were seriously polluted with HMs among seven rivers. These results provided a new direction for controlling HM pollution in Haizhou Bay which suggested substantial measures should be implemented to alleviate the potential risk of HMs, to these rivers sediments.

Toxicity Effects of Combined Mixtures of BDE-47 and Nickel on the Microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bacillariophyceae)

Nickel and 2,2’,4,4’-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) are two environmental pollutants commonly and simultaneously present in aquatic systems. Nickel and BDE-47 are individually toxic to various aquatic organisms. However, their toxicity mechanisms are species-dependent, and the toxic effects of combined mixtures of BDE-47 and nickel have not yet been investigated. The present study investigated the toxic effects of combined mixtures of BDE-47 and nickel in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. BDE-47 and nickel mixtures significantly decreased cell abundance and photosynthetic efficiency, while these cells’ reactive oxygen species (ROS) production significantly increased. The EC₅₀-72 h for BDE-47 and mixtures of BDE-47 and nickel were 16.46 ± 0.93 and 1.35 ± 0.06 mg/L, respectively. Thus, combined mixtures of the two pollutants enhance their toxic effects. Interactions between BDE-47 and nickel were evaluated, revealing synergistic interactions that contributed to toxicity in P. tricornutum. Moreover, transcriptomic analyses revealed photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, the biosynthesis of amino acids, the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, oxoacid metabolism, organic acid metabolism, carboxylic acid metabolism, and oxidation-reduction processes were considerably affected by the mixtures. This study provides evidence for the mechanisms of toxicity from combined BDE-47 and nickel exposure while also improving our understanding of the ecological risks of toxic chemicals on microalgae.

Bacterial Biosorbents, an Efficient Heavy Metals Green Clean-Up Strategy: Prospects, Challenges, and Opportunities

Rapid industrialization has led to the pollution of soil and water by various types of contaminants. Heavy metals (HMs) are considered the most reactive toxic contaminants, even at low concentrations, which cause health problems through accumulation in the food chain and water. Remediation using conventional methods, including physical and chemical techniques, is a costly treatment process and generates toxic by-products, which may negatively affect the surrounding environment. Therefore, biosorption has attracted significant research interest in the recent decades. In contrast to existing methods, bacterial biomass offers a potential alternative for recovering toxic/persistent HMs from the environment through different mechanisms for metal ion uptake. This review provides an outlook of the advantages and disadvantages of the current bioremediation technologies and describes bacterial groups, especially extremophiles with biosorbent potential for heavy metal removal with relevant examples and perspectives.

Assessing the risk of toxic metals contamination and phytoremediation potential of mangrove in three coastal sites along the Red Sea

Assessing toxic metals (TMs) contamination and phytoremediation potentiality in coastal mangrove lagoons is needed for applying sustainable management of this ecosystem. Consequently, here we determined the pseudo-total content of TMs in the sediments and mangrove plants (leaves, stems, aerial roots, and fine roots) collected from Al-Shuaiba, Yanbu, and Jeddah lagoons, along the coast of Red Sea. The contamination degree was assessed using different indices and the potentiality of mangroves for TMs phytoremediation was determined. The average total metals content (mg kg^-1) in the sediments ranged from 1806 to 9580 for Fe, 65 to 195 for Mn, 3.9 to 25.9 for Cu, 5.5 to 16.4 for Zn, 0.09 to 0.42 for Cd, 8.9 to 20.9 for Cr, 32.8 to 37.9 for Ni, and from 0.69 to 6.7 for Pb. The sediments of Yanbu site contained the highest content of all metals (except for Cu), while Al-Shuaiba sediments contained the lowest values. The contamination factor (CF) showed that the sediments of Yanbu and Jeddah suffer from high and moderate contamination degree of Cd. These sites suffer from moderate grade of Ni contamination. The CF values of Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, and Zn in the three sites were lower than unity, which show low contamination degree. Iron, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were concentrated in the fine roots, while Cd was concentrated in the stems. Mangrove plants at Yanbu site contained significantly higher content of all metals than the grown plants in Jeddah and Al-Shuaiba sites, which can be explained by the high metal content in the sediments and the anthropogenic metal sources such as the petrochemical industries, and the industrial and municipal wastewater discharged into this site. Sediment-to-plant transfer coefficients values were higher than unity, which indicate that the mangrove plants have the potential to accumulate the metals. The results highlight a potential risk at Yanbu and Jeddah sites and may help for applying sustainable trials for phyto-management of these lagoons.

Ecotoxicological assessment of toxic elements contamination in mangrove ecosystem along the Red Sea coast, Egypt

Identifying biochemical aspects of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is of particular concern in mangrove ecosystems, Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh., due to their importance as natural buffers in coastal areas. Nonetheless, the microbial community dynamics and potential scavenging responses of mangrove ecosystems to the phytotoxicity of PTEs remain questionable. This study assesses the ecological risk benchmarks of some PTEs, including aluminum (Al), boron (B), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), and their microbial responses in the bottom sediments of mangrove ecosystems along Egypt's Red Sea coast. In particular, we assessed the role of microbial metabolites in biochemical cycling of nutrients and scavenging against phytotoxicity hazards. We quantified a spectrum of ecological risk assessment indices, which suggested elevated levels of PTEs in sediment, particularly Cr, Hg, and Pb. Canonical correspondence analysis and generalized linear mixed effects models indicate that the spatial biodiversity of microbial taxa is impacted significantly by the physicochemical characteristics of sediments and concentrations of PTEs. Results demonstrate that the microbial communities and their metabolites exert a significant influence on organic matter (OM) decomposition and the biochemical cycling of phytoavailable nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Spatially, nitrogenase activities were higher (411.5 μmoL h^-1 mL^-1) in the southern sites of the Red Sea coast relative to the northern locations (93.8 μmoL h^-1 mL^-1). In contrast, higher concentrations of phytohormones, including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (61.5 mg mL^-1) and gibberellins (534.2 mg mL^-1), were more evident in northern sites. Siderophores correlated positively with Fe concentration in sediments and averaged 307.4 mg mL^-1. Overall, these findings provide insights into the biochemical signals of PTEs contamination in hostile environments, contributing to a better understanding of the future prospects of PTEs bioremediation in contaminated coastal environments.

Heavy metals uptake and translocation of typical wetland plants and their ecological effects on the coastal soil of a contaminated bay in Northeast China

Heavy metal pollution in coastal zone is a global environment problem concerning the international society. As an eco-friendly and economical method, phytoremediation is a promising strategy for improving heavy metal pollution in coastal soil. In order to alleviate the ecological risk of heavy metal pollution in Jinzhou Bay, a typical and important heavy industrial area in China, three local wetland plants (Scirpus validus, Typha orientalis and Phragmites australis) were selected and planted in the field. The plants showed strong tolerance of high concentrations of heavy metals. Stressed by the heavy metals, the root weight of S. validus and P. australis increased 114.74% and 49.91%, respectively. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, As, Hg) accumulated in the plant roots were 4-60 times higher than that in plant shoots. The SEM analysis found that abundant heavy metals were adhered to the root surface closely. Bioconcentration factor of heavy metals on the plant roots were 0.08-0.89 (except Cr, Ni), while the translocation factor from roots to above ground of plants were 0.02-0.27. Furthermore, the wetland plants improved the regional ecological environment quality. The concentrations of heavy metals in the rhizosphere soil decreased significantly. Compared with the bulk soil, the potential ecological risk index in the rhizosphere soil reduced 26.51%-69.14%. Moreover, the microbial diversity in rhizosphere soil increased significantly, and the abundances of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes also increased in rhizosphere soil. Pearson correlations indicated that Hg, As, Ni and Cr were negatively correlated with Proteobacteria (p < 0.05), and Cu was significantly negative correlated with Bacteroidetes (p < 0.05). The results support that using suitable local plants is a promising approach for repairing heavy metal contaminated costal soil, not only because it can improve the regional ecological environment quality, but also because it can enhance the landscape value of coastal zone.

Distribution, source and risk assessment of heavy metals in the seawater, sediments, and organisms of the Daya Bay, China

Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Hg and As in seawater, sediment and organisms of the Daya Bay, Guangdong province, China were measured to acquire the comprehensive understanding on distribution, sources and risk assessment of heavy metals (HMs) in the marine ecosystem. The concentrations were relatively ideal, and the Pb was the major pollutant in the seawater and sediment. The contents of HMs were highest in spring; the concentrations near the sewage outlet and shore were noticeable. Submarine pipeline sewage, atmospheric deposition and runoff were the main sources of HMs in coastal waters. Studied HMs were preferentially retained by liquid phase; Cd, Cu and Zn were the most accumulated elements in the organisms from the surrounding environment. Cd in shellfish deserved particular attention, but the health risks including non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of all elements were within acceptable limits. The potential health risks of Pb have been confirmed by molecular docking.

Effects of Human Activities on the Spatial Distribution, Ecological Risk and Sources of PTEs in Coastal Sediments

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) have attracted substantial attention because of their widespread sources, long residue time and easy accumulation. PTEs in the surface sediments of inshore waters are strongly affected by human activities because these waters are a zone of interaction between the ocean and land. In the present study, to explore the environmental geochemical behaviour and source of PTEs in the surface sediments of coastal waters, the contents and spatial distributions of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) in different regions of Xiamen Bay were investigated. The data were processed by multivariate statistical methods, and the distribution characteristics of PTEs in the surface sediments of Xiamen Bay were analysed. In addition, the pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological index(RI) were used to evaluate the pollution degree and potential risk in the surface sediments of Xiamen Bay, and the positive matrix factorisation (PMF) model was used to analyse the source. The results show that Zn had the highest mean concentration, followed by Pb, Cr, Cu, As, Cd and Hg, among the seven PTEs. The mean contents of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu and Hg, and especially Hg and Cd, were higher than the corresponding environmental background values. The average PLI value indicated that the Xiamen Bay sediment was moderately contaminated by PTEs. The Igeo results showed that Xiamen Bay was moderately to strongly polluted by Cd and Hg. The proportions of samples with low, medium and strong risk levels were 11.63%, 74.42%, and 13.95% in surface sediments, respectively. PMF models showed that the input of chemical fertilizer and medication, anthropogenic atmospheric components and terrestrial detritus were the main sources of PTEs in the surface sediment of Xiamen Bay.

First Experimental Evidence for the Presence of Potentially Virulent Klebsiella oxytoca in 14 Species of Commonly Consumed Aquatic Animals, and Phenotyping and Genotyping of K. oxytoca Isolates

Klebsiella oxytoca is a recently emerging pathogen that can cause necrotizing enterocolitis, hemorrhagic colitis, sepsis-associated purpura fulminans, and infective endocarditis in humans. The bacterium is ubiquitous in water and soil environments. Nevertheless, current literature on K. oxytoca in aquatic products is rare. In this study, we surveyed K. oxytoca contamination in 41 species of consumable aquatic animals sold in July, August, and September of 2018 and 2019 in Shanghai, China, 40 of which had no history of carrying this bacterium. K. oxytoca was for the first time isolated from 14 species with high abundance in benthic animals. None of the K. oxytoca isolates (n = 125) harbored toxin genes mviM, tisB, and yqgB. However, a high occurrence of virulence-associated genes was observed, including brkB (73.6%), cdcB (66.4%), pduV (64.8%), and virk (63.2%). Resistance to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim (56.0%) was the most predominant among the isolates, followed by chloramphenicol (6.4%), tetracycline (5.6%), and kanamycin (3.2%). Approximately 8.0% of the isolates displayed multidrug resistant phenotypes. Meanwhile, high percentages of the isolates tolerated the heavy metals Cu²⁺ (84.8%), Pb²⁺ (80.8%), Cr³⁺ (66.4%), Zn²⁺ (66.4%), and Hg²⁺ (49.6%). Different virulence and resistance profiles were observed among K. oxytoca isolates in 3 types and 14 species of aquatic animals. The ERIC-PCR-based genome fingerprinting of the 125 K. oxytoca isolates revealed 108 ERIC genotypes with 79 singletons, which demonstrated the genetic diversity of the isolates. The results of this study fill gaps for policy and research in the risk assessment of K. oxytoca in consumable aquatic animals.

A review on catalytic-enzyme degradation of toxic environmental pollutants: Microbial enzymes

Industrialization and other human anthropogenic activities cause serious threats to the environment. The toxic pollutants can cause detrimental diseases on diverse living beings in their respective ecosystems. Bioremediation is one of the efficient remediation methods in which the toxic pollutants are removed from the environment by the application of microorganisms or their biologically active products (enzymes). Typically, the microorganisms in the environment produce various enzymes to immobilize and degrade the toxic environmental pollutants by utilizing them as a substrate for their growth and development. Both the bacterial and fungal enzymes can degrade the toxic pollutants present in the environment and convert them into non-toxic forms through their catalytic reaction mechanism. Hydrolases, oxidoreductases, dehalogenases, oxygenases and transferases are the major classes of microbial enzymes responsible for the degradation of most of the toxic pollutants in the environment. Recently, there are different immobilizations and genetic engineering techniques have been developed to enhance enzyme efficiency and diminish the process cost for pollutant removal. This review focused on enzymatic removal of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, plastics and pesticides in the environment. Current trends and further expansion for efficient removal of toxic pollutants through enzymatic degradation are also reviewed in detail.

Tracing the heavy metals zinc, lead and nickel in banana shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) from the Persian Gulf and human health risk assessment

Seafood has long been considered a unique source of nutrition. However, increasing trends in consumption of marine products must be considered, especially in potentially polluted environments such as the Persian Gulf. This study was undertaken to analyse the level of heavy metal contamination of nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) captured from the northern Persian Gulf. The concentration of heavy metals in the muscle of shrimp followed the order Zn > Ni > Pb. The content of Zn and Ni was higher than recommended standard limits by the FAO/WHO. The combined impact of all metals was lower than the acceptable limit of 1 in shrimp. The carcinogenic risk for Ni was higher than the unacceptable value. In total, our finding indicated no potential health risk from the daily consumption of this species. However, long-term consumption of shrimp can pose a risk of carcinogenic effects of nickel. Continuous monitoring of these trace metals in seafood is necessary to ensure the quality of seafood and food safety.

Metabolomics comparison of metabolites and functional pathways in the gills of Chlamys farreri under cadmium exposure

The biological processes of Chlamys farreri (C. farreri), an economically important shellfish, are affected when exposed to Cd²⁺. In this study, changes to biological processes and metabolite levels in C. farreri were examined when exposed to Cd²⁺. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem TOF mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF/MS)-based untargeted metabolomics was used to examine changes in the metabolism of C. farreri gill tissue exposed to 0.050 mg/L Cd²⁺ for 96 h in a natural environment. Sixty-eight metabolites with significant differences were screened by multivariate statistical analysis. Eleven enriched functional pathways displayed significant changes in inactivity. Differential metabolites, mainly C00157 and C00350, have a significant impact on functional pathways and can be used as potential major biomarkers. Lipid phosphorylation, disruption of signal transduction, and autophagy activation were observed to change in C. farreri when exposed to Cd. The metabolome information supplements research on C. farreri exposure to heavy metals and provides a platform for further multi-omics analysis.

Source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments of the urban rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay, Eastern China: using multivariate statistical analyses and Pb-Sr isotope fingerprints

Urban river runoff carrying various anthropogenic sources of heavy metals (HMs) is the most important input pathways for HM pollutions in the coastal region, apportioning sources of environmental pollutants is key to controlling coastal HM pollution. In the study, surface sediments were collected from seven urban rivers flowing through Lianyungang City and discharging into Haizhou Bay, Eastern China. The concentrations of HMs of the river sediments were, in mg/kg (mean value ± standard deviation): Mn (550 ± 227) > Zn (67 ± 61) > Cr (33 ± 12) > Ni (21 ± 8.5) > Cu (16 ± 7.6) > Pb (15 ± 5.6) > Cd (0.11 ± 0.06), which were slightly to moderately polluted. As important outlets for municipal and industrial sewages, the Shawang River and Linhong River were the most polluted. Based on the multivariate statistical analysis, HMs were attributed to anthropogenic source (industrial, domestic, and agricultural discharges) and natural source (soil parent materials and atmospheric deposition). Based on isotope source apportionment, Pb was mainly from natural source, exhausts of leaded gasoline vehicles, and coal combustion, with the mean contributions of 39.3%, 23.7%, and 37.0%, respectively, and Sr originated from natural source and anthropogenic source, with mean contributions of 31.8% and 68.2%, respectively. Pb-Sr isotopes illustrated that anthropogenic inputs were the dominant source for HMs in urban river sediments flowing into Haizhou Bay, and the isotope tracing results make up the discriminating deficiency of the multivariate statistical analysis.

Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Environmental Health Risk of Heavy Metals in Industrial Wastewater of China during 1999-2018

In recent decades, environmental health risk caused by heavy metals in industrial wastewater (EHR-IHM) has become a serious issue globally, especially for China. Given the spatial difference of heavy metal emissions, hydrogeography, population distribution, etc., it is essential to estimate China's EHR-IHM from a high-resolution perspective. Based on the framework of USEtox, this study constructs an environmental health risk assessment method for heavy metals discharged from industrial wastewater by coupling the Pollutant Accumulation Model (PAM). This method also considers the process of heavy metal flows between upstream and downstream areas. Based on this constructed method, we investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of EHR-IHM of As, Cd, Cr(VI), Hg, and Pb in China from 1999 to 2018. Results showed that the EHR-IHM in China increased rapidly during 1999-2007 and decreased gradually during 2007-2018, with the highest Damage Level (DL) of 6.8 × 10⁴ disability-adjusted life years (DALY). As and Cr(VI) were the major heavy metal pollutants, which induced 58.9-70.6% and 23.9-36.2% of the total EHR-IHM, respectively. Intake of aquatic products was the dominant exposure route, accounting for over 84.1% of national EHR-IHM, followed by drinking water intake, accounting for 9.5-15.8%. Regarding spatial distribution, the regions with high EHR-IHM are mainly distributed in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, southeast coastal cities, Bohai Rim, etc.
