Facile one-pot preparation of Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterojunction for photocatalytic applications

The selection of a nitrogen precursor for the construction of N-doped titanium dioxide with enhanced photocatalytic activity for the removal of gaseous toluene

The preparation of nitrogen-doped TiO2 (i.e., N-TiO2) catalysts is a highly effective option to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Nonetheless, relatively little is known about the effects of dopant precursors selected for their preparation with regard to the photocatalytic efficacy. In this study, three types of dopants are selected and used as N sources (urea (U), melamine (M), and aqueous ammonia (A)) for N-TiO2 samples with the name codes of NTU, NTM, and NTA, respectively. The photocatalytic efficacy of these N-TiO2 samples is examined against toluene in a packed bed flow reactor. Under optimal conditions (e.g., relative humidity (RH) = 20% and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) = 1698 h-1), the superiority of NTA is evident over others with a quantum efficiency (QE) of 7.03 × 10-4 molecules photon-1, a space time yield (STY) of 1.38 × 10-4 molecules photon-1 mg-1, and a specific clean air delivery rate (SCADR) of 1148.8 L g-1 h-1. The analysis based on in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry confirms the formation of several intermediates such as benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and alkane species through ring opening reactions. In addition, the prepared NTA photocatalyst exhibits the highest toluene photocatalytic degradation efficiency among all TiO2-based catalysts surveyed to date. Overall, this study offers as a valuable guideline for the development of advanced TiO2 catalytic systems (such as N-TiO2) for the treatment of aromatic hydrocarbons in indoor air.

Laser Ablation for the Synthesis of Cu/Cu2O/CuO and Its Development as Photocatalytic Material for Escherichia coli Detoxification

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) offer promising methods for disinfection by generating radical species like hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and hydroxy peroxyl, which can induce oxidative stress and deactivate bacterial cells. Photocatalysis, a subset of AOPs, activates a semiconductor using specific electromagnetic wavelengths. A novel material, Cu/Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles (NPs), was synthesized via a laser ablation protocol (using a 1064 nm wavelength laser with water as a solvent, with energy ranges of 25, 50, and 80 mJ for 10 min). The target was sintered from 100 °C to 800 °C at rates of 1.6, 1.1, and 1 °C/min. The composite phases of Cu, CuO, and Cu2O showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible-light excitation at 368 nm. The size of Cu/Cu2O/CuO NPs facilitates penetration into microorganisms, thereby improving the disinfection effect. This study contributes to synthesizing mixed copper oxides and exploring their activation as photocatalysts for cleaner surfaces. The electronic and electrochemical properties have potential applications in other fields, such as capacitor materials. The laser ablation method allowed for modification of the band gap absorption and enhancement of the catalytic properties in Cu/Cu2O/CuO NPs compared to precursors. The disinfection of E. coli with Cu/Cu2O/CuO systems serves as a case study demonstrating the methodology's versatility for various applications, including disinfection against different microorganisms, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative.

An effective magnetic nanobiocomposite: Preparation, characterization and its application for adsorption removal of P-nitroaniline from aquatic environments

In this investigation, a magnetic nanobiocomposite, denoted as CoFe2O4/Activated Carbon integrated with Chitosan (CoFe2O4/AC@Ch), was synthesized based on a microwave-assisted for the efficacious adsorption of P-nitroaniline (PNA). The physicochemical properties of the said nano biocomposite were thoroughly characterized using a suite of analytical methodologies, namely FESEM/EDS, BET, FTIR, XRD, and VSM. The results confirm the successful synthesis of the nanobiocomposite, with its point of zero charge (pHZPC) determined to be 6.4. Adsorptive performance towards PNA was systematically examined over a spectrum of conditions, encompassing variations in PNA concentration (spanning 10-40 mg/L), adsorbent concentration (10-200 mg/L), contact periods (2.5-22.5 min), and solution pH (3-11). Upon optimization, the conditions converged to an adsorbent concentration of 200 mg/L, pH 5, PNA concentration of 10 mg/L, and a contact duration of 22.5 min, under which an impressive PNA adsorption efficacy of 98.6% was attained. Kinetic and isotherm analyses insinuated the adsorption mechanism to adhere predominantly to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The magnetic nanocomposite was recovered and used in 4 cycles, and the absorption rate reached 86%, which shows the good stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in wastewater treatment. Conclusively, these empirical outcomes underscore the viability of the formulated magnetic nanobiocomposite as a potent, recyclable adsorbent for the proficient extraction of PNA from aqueous matrices.

Biogenic Punica granatum Flower Extract Assisted ZnFe2O4 and ZnFe2O4-Cu Composites for Excellent Photocatalytic Degradation of RhB Dye

Globally, the textile industry contributes to pollution through accidental discharges or discharge of contaminated wastewater into waterways, significantly affecting water quality. These pollutants, including dye molecules, are environmental hazards for aquatic and terrestrial life. The field of visible light-mediated photocatalysis has experienced rapid growth, driven by the utilization of photocatalysts that can absorb low-energy visible light and effectively degrade dyes. In the present study, we report a simple method to controllably synthesize Fe2O3, ZnO, and ZnFe2O4 using the one-pot synthesis method. In the subsequent step, copper (Cu) was deposited on the surface of ZnFe2O4 (forming ZnFe2O4-Cu) using a facile, green, and cost-effective method. The synthesized samples were characterized using various techniques, including XRD, UV-Vis DRS, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, HR-TEM, XPS, PL, and BET analysis. These techniques were employed to investigate the composition, morphology, structure, and photophysical properties of as-prepared samples. The ZnFe2O4-Cu nanocomposite demonstrated efficient photocatalytic activity for degrading RhB dye pollutants under visible light. The photocatalyst was successfully reused for three consecutive cycles without significantly decreasing performance. Furthermore, during the study, the radical scavenging test emphasized the role of different radicals in the degradation of dye pollutants. This research has the potential to enable the efficient production of high-performance photocatalysts that can rapidly eliminate ecologically harmful dyes from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis and in situ oxidation of copper micro- and nanoparticles by arc discharge plasma in liquid

This work presents a one-step controlled method for the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using an arc discharge in deionized water without subsequent thermal annealing. The synthesis conditions were varied by changing the arc discharge current from 2 to 4 A. Scanning electron microscopy images of samples synthesized at discharge current of 2 A revealed the formation of tenorite (CuO) nanopetals with an average length of 550 nm and a width of 100 nm, which had a large surface area. Arc discharge synthesis at 3 and 4 A current modes provides the formation of a combination of CuO nanopetals with spherical cuprite (Cu2O) nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 30 to 80 nm. The crystalline phase and elemental composition of the synthesized particles were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy and Energy dispersive analysis. As the arc discharge current was raised from 2 to 4 A, two notable changes occurred in the synthesized particles: the Cu/O ratio increased, and the particle sizes decreased. At 4 A, the synthesized particles were from 30 to 80 nm in size and had a spherical shape, indicating an increase in the amount of cuprite (Cu2O) phase. The optical band gap of the aqueous solutions of copper oxide particles also increased from 2 to 2.34 eV with increasing synthesis current from 2 to 4 A, respectively. This suggests that the proposed synthesis method can be used to tune the band gap of the final material by controlling the Cu/O ratio through the current of arc discharge. Overall, this work demonstrates a novel approach to the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles with controllable CuO/Cu2O/Cu ratios, which has the potential to be useful in a variety of applications, particularly due to the significant enhancement of photocatalytic abilities and widen the working spectral range.

Cocatalyst loaded Al-SrTiO3 cubes for Congo red dye photo-degradation under wide range of light

The continued pollution, waste, and unequal distribution of the limited amount of fresh water on earth are pushing the world into water scarcity crisis. Consequently, development of revolutionary, cost-effective, and efficient techniques for water purification is essential. Herein, molten flux method was used for the preparation of micro-sized Al-doped SrTiO₃ photocatalyst loaded with RhCr₂O₃ and CoOOH cocatalysts via simple impregnation method for the photo-assisted degradation of Congo red dye under UV and visible irradiation compared with P25 standard photocatalyst. In addition, photoelectrochemical analysis was conducted to reveal the separation and transfer efficiency of the photogenerated e^-/h⁺ pairs playing the key role in photocatalysis. SEM and TEM analyses revealed that both P25 and the pristine SrTiO₃ have spherical shapes, while Al-doped SrTiO₃ and the sample loaded with cocatalysts have cubic shapes with a relatively higher particle size reaching 145 nm. In addition, the lowest bandgap is due to Al⁺³ ion doping and excessive surface oxygen vacancies, as confirmed by both UV-Vis diffuse-reflectance and XPS analyses. The loading of the cocatalysts resulted in a change in the bandgap from n-type (pristine SrTiO₃ and Al-SrTiO₃) into p-type (cocatalyst loaded sample) as exhibited by Mott-Schottky plots. Besides, the cocatalyst-loaded sample exhibited good performance stability after 5 cycles of the photocatalytic removal of Congo red dye. OH^· radical was the primary species responsible for CR degradation as confirmed by experiments with radical scavengers. The observed performance of the prepared samples under both UV and visible light could foster the ongoing efforts towards more efficient photocatalysts for water purification.
