Abstract
This review explores the results of research on oral health concerning cardiovascular diseases and some forms of cancer and is based on results from published systematic reviews and some studies. The research results will have a strong focus on exploring the relationship between different aspects of oral infections. The relationship between oral health parameters, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and certain cancers was examined from different angles, including prospective analyses, in a population-based health study in Oslo from the year 2000 (Oslo II study). A major finding was that low levels of antibodies to the oral anaerobe Tannerella forsythia predict both CVD mortality in men with a history of myocardial infarction and incidence of bladder cancer in a random sample of men in the study. Low levels of antibodies to Treponea denticola predict the incidence of bladder and colon cancer in a random sample of men in the study. Both anaerobe bacteria are part of the so-called red complex of bacteria in chronic periodontitis together with Pophyromonas gingivalis. These three bacteria have different properties and are causal in chronic periodontitis. They migrate into the local tissues by adhering to the oral epithelium, break down soft and hard tissues, and spread via the circulation to organs distant from the mouth. This paper will give an overview of which oral health measures have been explored and associated with different CVD and cancer diagnoses and what scientific literature supports or contravenes our hypothesis. The oral microbiome is described with the most relevant bacteria related to microbiology, serum, autopsies, and associated causes such as alcohol. There will be a mention of the possibilities and limitations of different study designs. There seems to be a causal relationship between oral anaerobe bacteria and systemic diseases regulated by the immune system. This is seen alongside other well-known risk factors, especially for CVD. The prospective finding of a relation to the incidence of certain cancers and CVD is particularly intriguing. However, further research is needed to determine the biological mechanisms underpinning these associations.

Relationship between Chinese Baijiu consumption and dental caries among 55- to 74-year-old adults in Guangdong, southern China: a cross-sectional survey. BMC Geriatr 2021; 21:506. Abstract
Background Whether an association between alcohol consumption and dental caries exists is still unclear. Chinese Baijiu is the most common alcohol consumed by middle-aged and elderly Chinese individuals. This study aimed to assess the relationship between alcohol consumption (Chinese Baijiu) and dental caries in Guangdong Province, southern China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Guangdong Province using a multistage, stratified, equal-sized, random sampling strategy. In total, 576 individuals aged 55–74 were recruited to fill out a questionnaire through face-to-face and one-on-one interviews and to undergo a series of dental examinations with a Community Periodontal Index (CPI) probe. According to the standard for clinical dentition examination of the WHO 2013 criteria, the presence of dental caries was determined by the DFT/DFRoot (decayed-filled tooth/root) index. The ratios of males to females and urban people to countrymen were both 1:1. Then, the chi-square test and rank-sum tests were used to compare the differences in caries between subgroups, and multivariate logistic regression analyses, as well as negative binomial regression analyses, were executed to identify the potential relationship between alcohol consumption and caries. Results The prevalence of crown caries was 79.17% with a DFT index of 3.19, while that of root caries was 61.28% with a DFRoot index of 2.08. The prevalence and mean tooth of crown caries of females were higher than those of males. The prevalence and mean DFRoot of root caries in rural areas were higher than those in urban areas. The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis and negative binomial regression analysis showed that there was a statistically significant negative correlation between the consumption frequency of Chinese Baijiu and caries (often vs. never/rarely, crown caries: odds ratio (OR) = 0.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.26–1.13, P = 0.103, incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.44–0.92, P = 0.015; root caries: OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.24–0.93, P = 0.030, IRR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.32–0.54, P = 0.008). Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, frequent consumption of Chinese Baijiu was a protective factor for caries in middle-aged and elderly people in Guangdong Province. However, considering the harm of alcohol to one’s general health, it is recommended to drink moderately and avoid alcohol abuse. Abstract
BACKGROUND Using data from general adult population, this study aims to describe epidemiology of alcohol consumption patterns and their association with cardiovascular risk. METHODS CESCAS I is a population-based study from four mid-sized cities in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Associations between diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and history of CVD and drinking patterns were assessed using crude prevalence odds ratios (ORs) and adjusted OR. RESULTS A total of 37.2% of the studied population never drank and 18.3% reported to be former drinkers. Among current drinkers, moderate drinking was the most frequent pattern (24.2%). For women with light and moderate consumption, the odds of having >20% CVD risk was ~40% lower than that of never drinkers. The odds of having a history of CVD was 50% lower in those with moderate consumption. For men with heavy consumption, the odds of having >20% CVD risk was about twice as high as for never drinkers. CONCLUSIONS A harmful association was observed between heavy drinking and having >20% CVD risk for men. However, for women, an apparently protective association was observed between light and moderate drinking and having >20% CVD risk and between moderate drinking and having a history of CVD.

Abstract
With this review, we aim to increase the quality standards for clinical studies with microbiome as an output parameter. We critically address the existing body of evidence for good quality practices in oral microbiome studies based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. First, we discuss the usefulness of microbiome profile analyses. Is a microbiome study actually the best approach for answering the research question? This is followed by addressing the criteria for the most appropriate study design, sample size, and the necessary data (study metadata) that should be collected. Next, we evaluate the available evidence for best practices in sample collection, transport, storage, and DNA isolation. Finally, an overview of possible sequencing options (eg, 16S rRNA gene hypervariable regions, sequencing platforms), processing and data interpretation approaches, as well as requirements for meaningful data storage, sharing, and reporting are provided.

Abstract
Ischemic disorders, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease, are the most common causes of debilitating disease and death in westernized cultures. The extent of tissue injury relates directly to the extent of blood flow reduction and to the length of the ischemic period, which influence the levels to which cellular ATP and intracellular pH are reduced. By impairing ATPase-dependent ion transport, ischemia causes intracellular and mitochondrial calcium levels to increase (calcium overload). Cell volume regulatory mechanisms are also disrupted by the lack of ATP, which can induce lysis of organelle and plasma membranes. Reperfusion, although required to salvage oxygen-starved tissues, produces paradoxical tissue responses that fuel the production of reactive oxygen species (oxygen paradox), sequestration of proinflammatory immunocytes in ischemic tissues, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and development of postischemic capillary no-reflow, which amplify tissue injury. These pathologic events culminate in opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores as a common end-effector of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced cell lysis and death. Emerging concepts include the influence of the intestinal microbiome, fetal programming, epigenetic changes, and microparticles in the pathogenesis of I/R. The overall goal of this review is to describe these and other mechanisms that contribute to I/R injury. Because so many different deleterious events participate in I/R, it is clear that therapeutic approaches will be effective only when multiple pathologic processes are targeted. In addition, the translational significance of I/R research will be enhanced by much wider use of animal models that incorporate the complicating effects of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. © 2017 American Physiological Society. Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation between alcohol intake and groups of periodontal antibody titers among individuals with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), prediabetes and diabetes. This was a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III) 1988–1994 data, among individuals 40 y and older with information on alcohol intake and serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody data against 19 oral microorganisms. Participants were excluded if they did not have teeth, reported that they were taking insulin, or having gestational diabetes. The sample size for this analysis was 3,219. Periodontal antibodies were grouped into four clusters using cluster analysis: Orange-Red, Red-Green, Yellow- Orange, and Orange-Blue. Cluster scores were computed for each individual by summing z-scores of standardized log-transformed IgG titers of antibodies against periodontal microorganisms making up each respective cluster. Each cluster score was modeled as an outcome. Alcohol consumption was assessed in g/day using self-reported number of days of drinking in the past 12 mo and the average number of drinks consumed per day on days when they drank. Overall, alcohol intake was positively associated with periodontal antibodies of the Orange-Red cluster (P. melaninogenica, P. intermedia, P. nigrescens, and P. gingivalis), and inversely associated with the Yellow-Orange cluster (S. intermedius, S. oralis, S. mutans, F. nucleatum, P. micra, C. ochracea) after multivariable adjustment. The association between alcohol intake and the Orange-Red cluster was strongest among individuals with diabetes; this relation was seen among individuals with and without periodontal damage. The Orange-Red cluster was positively associated with periodontal damage among individuals with diabetes. Alcohol intake was not associated with any antibody cluster among individuals with NGT or prediabetes. The effect of alcohol intake on periodontal disease may be greater among individuals with diabetes but this finding needs to be confirmed in prospective studies. Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a scourge of longevity that will drain enormous resources from public health budgets in the future. Currently, there is no diagnostic biomarker and/or treatment for this most common form of dementia in humans. AD can be of early familial-onset or sporadic with a late-onset. Apart from the two main hallmarks, amyloid-beta and neurofibrillary tangles, inflammation is a characteristic feature of AD neuropathology. Inflammation may be caused by a local central nervous system insult and/or by peripheral infections. Numerous microorganisms are suspected in AD brains ranging from bacteria (mainly oral and non-oral Treponema species), viruses (herpes simplex type I), and yeasts (Candida species). A causal relationship between periodontal pathogens and non-oral Treponema species of bacteria has been proposed via the amyloid-beta and inflammatory links. Periodontitis constitutes a peripheral oral infection that can provide the brain with intact bacteria and virulence factors and inflammatory mediators due to daily, transient bacteremias. If and when genetic risk factors meet environmental risk factors in the brain, disease is expressed, in which neurocognition may be impacted, leading to the development of dementia. To achieve the goal of finding a diagnostic biomarker and possible prophylactic treatment for AD, there is an initial need to solve the etiological puzzle contributing to its pathogenesis. This review therefore addresses oral infection as the plausible etiology of late-onset AD (LOAD).
