Alginate-based nano-adsorbent materials - Bioinspired solution to mitigate hazardous environmental pollutants

Population growth and industrialization is associated with the elevation of hazardous pollutants, including heavy metals, biomedical wastes, personal-care products, endocrine-disrupters, pharmaceutically active compounds, and colorants in the environment. The scientific focus has been devoted to developing novel adsorbents to mitigate hazardous pollutants by constructing hybrids of different polymers and nano-structured materials for improved workability and physicochemical attributes. Recently, much attention has been devoted to nanomaterials in environmental remediation, owning to their exceptional characteristics including novel electrical/chemical features, quantum size effects, tunable functionalization, high scalability, and surface-area-to-volume ratio. Target-specific designing of nanocomposites impart high functionality. The cost-effective and eco-friendly synthesis of bioadsorbent materials is increasing for the removal of hazardous pollutants. Due to biocompatible, biodegradable, and eco-friendly nature, sodium alginate has been widely reported for the preparation of bioadsorbent materials to remove different inorganic/organic pollutants. In this review, the potentialities of alginate-based nanocomposites have been described for environmental remediation purposes. Different nanomaterials, including silica, metallic oxide, graphene oxide, hybrid inorganic-organic, non-magnetic-magnetic, carbon nanorods, nanotubes, polymeric nanocarriers, and several other materials have been described in combination with alginate biopolymer for environmental remediation.

A comprehensive review on magnetic carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based buckypaper for removal of heavy metals and dyes

Industrial effluents contain several organic and inorganic contaminants. Among others, dyes and heavy metals introduce a serious threat to drinking waterbodies. These pollutants can be noxious or carcinogenic in nature, and harmful to humans and different aquatic species. Therefore, it is of high importance to remove heavy metals and dyes to reduce their environmental toxicity. This has led to an extensive research for the development of novel materials and techniques for the removal of heavy metals and dyes. One route to the removal of these pollutants is the utilization of magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNT) as adsorbents. Magnetic carbon nanotubes hold remarkable properties such as surface-volume ratio, higher surface area, convenient separation methods, etc. The suitable characteristics of magnetic carbon nanotubes have led them to an extensive search for their utilization in water purification. Along with magnetic carbon nanotubes, the buckypaper (BP) membranes are also favorable due to their unique strength, high porosity, and adsorption capability. However, BP membranes are mostly used for salt removal from the aqueous phase and limited literature shows their applications for removal of heavy metals and dyes. This study focuses on the existence of heavy metal ions and dyes in the aquatic environment, and methods for their removal. Various fabrication approaches for the development of magnetic-CNTs and CNT-based BP membranes are also discussed. With the remarkable separation performance and ultra-high-water flux, magnetic-CNTs, and CNT-based BP membranes have a great potential to be the leading technologies for water treatment in future.

Graphene/PVA buckypaper for strain sensing application

Strain sensors in the form of buckypaper (BP) infiltrated with various polymers are considered a viable option for strain sensor applications such as structural health monitoring and human motion detection. Graphene has outstanding properties in terms of strength, heat and current conduction, optics, and many more. However, graphene in the form of BP has not been considered earlier for strain sensing applications. In this work, graphene-based BP infiltrated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was synthesized by vacuum filtration technique and polymer intercalation. First, Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared via treatment with sulphuric acid and nitric acid. Whereas, to obtain high-quality BP, GO was sonicated in ethanol for 20 min with sonication intensity of 60%. FTIR studies confirmed the oxygenated groups on the surface of GO while the dispersion characteristics were validated using zeta potential analysis. The nanocomposite was synthesized by varying BP and PVA concentrations. Mechanical and electrical properties were measured using a computerized tensile testing machine, two probe method, and hall effect, respectively. The electrical conducting properties of the nanocomposites decreased with increasing PVA content; likewise, electron mobility also decreased while electrical resistance increased. The optimization study reports the highest mechanical properties such as tensile strength, Young’s Modulus, and elongation at break of 200.55 MPa, 6.59 GPa, and 6.79%, respectively. Finally, electrochemical testing in a strain range of ε ~ 4% also testifies superior strain sensing properties of 60 wt% graphene BP/PVA with a demonstration of repeatability, accuracy, and preciseness for five loading and unloading cycles with a gauge factor of 1.33. Thus, results prove the usefulness of the nanocomposite for commercial and industrial applications.

Synthesis of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) infiltrated MWCNTs buckypaper for strain sensing application

Buckypaper (BP)/polymer composites are viewed as a viable option to improve the strain transfer across the buckypaper strain sensor by means of providing better interfacial bonding between the polymer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) BP/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites were fabricated by a sequence of vacuum filtration and polymer intercalation technique. The optimized conditions for achieving a uniform and stable dispersion of MWCNTs were found to be using ethanol as a dispersion medium, 54 μm ultrasonic amplitude and 40 min sonication time. FTIR analysis and SEM spectra further confirmed the introduction of oxygenated groups (-COOH) on the surface of MWCNTs BP and the complete infiltration of PVA into the porous MWCNTs network. At MWCNTs content of 65 wt. %, the tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation-at-break of PVA-infiltrated MWCNTs BP achieved a maximum value of 156.28 MPa, 4.02 GPa and 5.85%, improved by 189%, 443% and 166% respectively, as compared to the MWCNTs BP. Electrical characterization performed using both two-point probe method and Hall effect measurement showed that BP/PVA composites exhibited reduced electrical conductivity. From the electromechanical characterization, the BP/PVA composites showed improved sensitivity with a gauge factor of about 1.89-2.92. The cyclic uniaxial tensile test validated the high reproducibility and hysteresis-free operation of 65-BP/PVA composite under 3 loading-unloading cycles. Characterization results confirmed that the flexible BP/PVA composite (65 wt. %) with improved mechanical and electromechanical properties is suitable for strain sensing applications in structural health monitoring and wearable technology, as an alternative choice to the fragile nature of conventional metallic strain sensors.

A Study on DSLM Transporting the Rare Earth Metal La (III) with a Carrier of PC-88A

This paper studies transmission behavior of La (III) in dispersed supported liquid membrane (DSLM) of dispersed phase constituted by dispersed supported liquid membrane solution and HCl solution with polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PVDF) as support and kerosene as membrane solvent, with 2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid-single-2-ethyl hexyl ester (PC-88A) and two-(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as mobile carrier. It also investigates the influence of La (III) transmission by the material liquid acidity, initial concentration of La (III), HCI concentration, membrane solution, and HCI solution volume ratio, resolving agent and carrier concentration, as well as concluding that the optimal transmission and separation conditions are dispersed phase of 4.00 mol/L HCl concentration, 30:30 volume ratio of membrane solution, and HCl solution, within 0.160 mol/L controlled carrier concentration and 4.00 pH value of material liquid. Under the optimal conditions, the La (III) initial concentration of material liquid phase is 8.00 × 10-5 mol/L mol/L, 125 min, and 93.9% migration rate. Under the condition of unchanged acidity of resolving phase, HCL, H₂SO4, and HNO₃ as resolving agent, at 125th min, the migration rates of La (III) are 93.9%, 94.0%, and 87.8%, respectively. HCl solution, H₂SO₄ solution, and HNO₃ solution have a certain effect on the La (III) resolution, of which 4.00 mol/L HCl solution and 2.00 mol/L H₂SO₄ solution are better. The effect of HNO₃ is slightly lower than HCl and H₂SO₄.

The effect of Nanocrystalline cellulose/Gum Arabic conjugates in crosslinked membrane for antibacterial, chlorine resistance and boron removal performance

In this work, we developed hybrid membranes integrated with Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC)/Gum Arabic (GuA) conjugates using crosslinked Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a matrix phase with the addition of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer that insured pore formation. At first, the NCC was prepared from microcrystalline cellulose via acid hydrolysis process. The performance property of hybrid NCC/GuA was measured using boron removal. The results showed that the rejection capability enhanced as compared to the control membranes, especially at 0.1wt% of NCC the selectivity is up to 92.4% with the flux rate of 21.3L/m².h. Moreover, the GuA in NCC/GuA conjugate significantly enhances the antibacterial activity by hindering the bacterial attachment to the surface as both of them carry the negative charge. Also by providing the active sites responsible for hydrogen bonding thus enhancing the hydrophilic character resulted in increased permeation flux rate. Therefore, the NCC/GuA conjugated membranes have great potentials for boron removal.

Carbon Nanotube Membranes: Synthesis, Properties, and Future Filtration Applications

Over the course of the past decade, there has been growing interest in the development of different types of membranes composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), including buckypapers and composite materials, for an ever-widening range of filtration applications. This article provides an overview of how different types of CNT membranes are prepared and the results obtained from investigations into their suitability for different applications. The latter involve the removal of small particles from air samples, the filtration of aqueous solutions containing organic compounds and/or bacteria, and the separation of individual liquids present in mixtures. A growing number of reports have demonstrated that the incorporation of CNTs into composite membranes confers an improved resistance to fouling caused by biomacromolecules and bacteria. These results are discussed, along with evidence that demonstrates it is possible to further reduce fouling by taking advantage of the inherent conductivity of composite membranes containing CNTs, as well as by using different types of electrochemical stimuli.

Novel reverse osmosis membranes composed of modified PVA/Gum Arabic conjugates: Biofouling mitigation and chlorine resistance enhancement

A novel crosslinked Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) reverse osmosis (RO) thin film membrane conjugated with Gum Arabic (GA) with superb performance and features was synthesized for water desalination. RO membrane desalination parameters, such as hydrophilicity, surface roughness, water permeability, salt rejection, Chlorine resistance and biofouling resistance were evaluated using a dead end RO filtration unit. The incorporation of Pluronic F127 and the conjugation of Gum Arabic improved the overall RO performance of the membranes. This study has shown that the membrane PVA-GA-5 that contains 0.9wt% Gum Arabic provided excellent permeation, salt rejection, Chlorine and biofouling resistance and mechanical strength. The most remarkable result to arise from this research is that the overall RO performance enhancement has been achieved while utilizing PVA/Gum Arabic as a separation layer without the use of a substrate, which eliminates negative effects associated with the use of a substrate like internal concentration polarization.
