Abstract
The presence and distribution of toxic organic compounds in soil pose significant challenges. Whether their distributional characteristics are more complex, especially in arid and semi-arid regions with harsh climatic conditions? This study analyzed the composition, classification, spatial distribution, and sources of 123 toxic organic compounds in 56 soil samples of coal-electricity production base. Those compounds were classified into 11 categories, mainly pesticides (41 compounds), organic synthesis intermediates (31 compounds), and drugs (23 compounds). Seventeen of those compounds were detected over the rate of 30 %, with 13 of them being under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) inventory. The primary sources of toxic organic compounds were determined using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF), including the degradation of pesticide residues (22.03 %), emissions of plastic pellets (16.64 %), industrial waste emissions (12.80 %), emissions from livestock (12.74 %), plastic films (11.22 %) and coal-to-liquid projects (10.78 %). This research underscores the widespread presence of toxic organic compounds in soil, highlighting their origins and distribution patterns, which are essential for developing targeted environmental management strategies in arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract
Hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) inclusion complex nanofibers (Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF) containing Luteolin (Lut) were prepared by electrospinning technology. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra confirmed the formation of Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the morphology of Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF was uniform and bead-free, suggesting that self-assembled aggregates, macromolecules with higher molecular weights, were formed by strong hydrogen bonding interactions between the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images showed that Lut was distributed in Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy revealed the change in chemical shift of the proton peak between Lut and HPγCD, confirming the formation of inclusion complex. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) proved that Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF had good thermal stability. The phase solubility test confirmed that HPγCD had a solubilizing effect on Lut. When the solubility of HPγCD reached 10 mM, the solubility of Lut increased by 15-fold. The drug loading test showed that the content of Lut in fibers reached 8.57 ± 0.02 %. The rapid dissolution experiment showed that Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF dissolved within 3 s. The molecular simulation provides three-dimensional evidence for the formation of inclusion complexes between Lut and HPγCD. Antibacterial experiments showed that Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF had enhanced antibacterial activity against S. aureus. Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF exhibited excellent antioxidant properties with a free radical scavenging ability of 89.5 ± 1.1 %. In vitro release experiments showed Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF had a higher release amount of Lut. In conclusion, Lut/HPγCD-IC-NF improved the physicochemical properties and bioavailability of Lut, providing potential applications of Lut in the pharmaceutical field.

Abstract
Eugenol is a natural compound with well-known repellent activity. However, its pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications are limited, since this compound is highly volatile and thermolabile. Nanoencapsulation provides protection, stability, conservation, and controlled release for several compounds. Here, eugenol was included in β-cyclodextrin, and the complex was characterized through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, we used molecular dynamics simulations to explore the eugenol-β-cyclodextrin complex stability with temperature increases. Our computational result demonstrates details of the molecular interactions and conformational changes of the eugenol-β-cyclodextrin complex and explains its stability between temperatures 27°C and 48°C, allowing its use in formulations that are subjected to varied temperatures.

Abstract
The poor solubility of the antidiabetic drug gliclazide (Glc) is due to its hydrophobic nature. This research is aimed at improving Glc's solubility and drug release profile, as well as at investigating additional benefits such as bioactivity and antioxidant activity, by forming binary complexes with HPβCD at different w/w ratios (1 : 1, 1 : 2.5, 1 : 4, and 1 : 9) and ternary complexes with HPβCD and Tryp at 1 : 1 : 1, 1 : 1 : 0.27, 1 : 2.5 : 0.27, 1 : 3.6 : 3.6, 1 : 4 : 1, and 1 : 9 : 1, respectively. Complexes were prepared by the physical mixing (PM) and solvent evaporation (SE) methods. The prepared inclusion complexes were meticulously characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra. To verify our findings, the inclusion complexes were evaluated by equilibrium solubility, in vitro drug release profile, kinetic models, and antidiabetic and antioxidant activities in animal models. Our results demonstrated that the solubility and drug release profile were found to be enhanced through binary as well as ternary complexes. Notably, ternary complexes with a ratio of 1 : 9 : 1 showed the highest solubility and drug release profile compared to all other preparations. Data on antioxidant activity indicated that the ternary complex had the higher total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity than the binary complex and Glc alone, in contrast to the diabetic group. In vivo antidiabetic activity data revealed a high percentage reduction in the blood glucose level by ternary complexes (49-52%) compared to the binary complexes (45-46%; p ≤ 0.05). HPβCD and Tryp provide a new platform for overcoming the challenges associated with poorly soluble Glc by providing greater complexing and solubilizing capabilities and imparting ancillary benefits to improve the drug's antidiabetic and antioxidant activities.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of essential oil medium on the inclusion complex of L. stoechas EO in β-cyclodextrin, as well as to examine the impact of the encapsulating action on the adulticidal activity. In line with this, L. stoechas EO was hydrodistilled and determined through GC-MS. Furthermore, the optimization of EO medium was conducted using a binary mixture design of ethanol and glycerol as green emulsifier solvent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis were used to verify the establishment of the IC. The insecticidal effect of the created formulation was evaluated against C. pipiens female mosquitoes. The optimum ethanol: glycerol ratio was 0.73: 0.27, corresponding to 58.86% of encapsulation efficiency. The fumigant test showed that, after 24 h of exposure, L. stoechas EO exerted only 24.56 ± 1.04%, while the encapsulated oil killed 57.89% of the adult population. At the highest dose (312.5 μl/L), the encapsulated oil provided the most significant effect on adults (100% mortality after 54 h) compared to non-encapsulated oil (100% mortality after 72 h). The encapsulated form of L. stoechas EO constitutes a promising alternative for the control of mosquitoes that are responsible for human diseases.

Abstract
Resibufogenin (RBG) is a natural medicinal ingredient with promising cardiac protection and antitumor activity. However, poor solubility and severe gastric mucosa irritation restrict its application in the pharmaceutical field. In this study, the inclusion complex of RBG with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) was prepared using the co-evaporation method, and the molar ratio of RBG to CD was determined to be approximately 1:2 by continuous variation plot for both CDs. The formation of inclusion complexes between RBG and each CD (RBG/β-CD and RBG/HP-β-CD) was evaluated by phase solubility study, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thin-layer chromatography. Powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry confirmed drug amorphization and encapsulation in the molecular cage for both CDs. Moreover, the inclusion complexes’ morphologies were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The dissolution rate of the inclusion complexes was markedly improved compared to that of RBG, and the complexes retained their antitumor activity, as shown in the in vitro cytotoxicity assay on a human lung adenocarcinoma cancer (A549) cell line. Moreover, less gastric mucosal irritation was observed for the inclusion complex. Thus, the inclusion complex should be considered a promising strategy for the delivery of poorly water-soluble anticancer agents, such as RBG.

Carboxymethyl chitosan-based electrospun nanofibers with high citral-loading for potential anti-infection wound dressings. Int J Biol Macromol 2022; 209:344-355. Abstract
As a natural antibacterial agent with pleasant fragrance, citral possesses low aqueous solubility. To improve citral loading in hydrophilic nanofiber, Pickering emulsion electrospinning strategy was proposed for anti-infection dressing development. The in-situ aggerated β-cyclodextrin-citral inclusion complex particles (βCPs) were used as emulsion stabilizers, while citral and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed solutions were used as the inner "dispersed oil phase" and outer "continuous water phase", respectively. The results of electronic microscope investigation shown βCPs possessed regular cube appearances with a size of 5.5 ± 2.2 μm, which might improve the emulsion storage stability based on visual investigation. Moreover, randomly oriented and bead-on-string nanofibers with βCPs uniformly distributed could be obtained under optimized compositions and electrospinning parameters. Despite volatilization during electrospinning, nanofibers with high citral loading possessed good antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In vitro hemolysis test indicated that nanofibers were hemocompatible. In addition, both fiber matrix and citral could promote the proliferation of mouse fibroblast cells. And the permeability of the fibers was adjustable. Thus, CMCS/PVA/βCPs/citral nanofibers could potentially protect wound from infection. In summary, CMCS/PVA/βCPs/citral nanofibers seemed to be promising alternatives to conventional wound dressings.

Abstract
Curcuminoids are known to exert diverse pharmacological effects and used in some pharmaceutical formulations. This study describes the preparation, characterization, and enhancement in the solubility and anticancer activity of a curcuminoids-rich extract (CRE) using a ternary inclusion complex system. CRE containing 88.9% w/w curcuminoids was prepared using a 'green' microwave extraction coupled with fractionation on a column of hydrophobic adsorbent resin. The ternary complex consisting of CRE, hydroxylpropyl-β-cyclodextrin and polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 was prepared using the solvent evaporation method and thoroughly characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractograms, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The ternary complex of CRE improved the water-solubility of curcuminoids (up to 70.3 µg/mL) as well as the dissolution rate when compared to those of CRE (0 µg/mL). In addition, the ternary complex exhibited significantly stronger anticancer activity against human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549), human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and human colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cell lines than CRE.

Abstract
Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture and are important for global food security. However, postapplication losses due to degradation, photolysis, evaporation, leaching, surface runoff, and other processes may substantially reduce their efficacy. Controlled-release formulations can achieve the permeation-regulated transfer of an active ingredient from a reservoir to a target surface. Thus, they can maintain an active ingredient at a predetermined concentration for a specified period. This can reduce degradation and dissipation and other losses and has the potential to improve efficacy. Recent developments in controlled-release technology have adapted the concepts of intelligence and precision from the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we present recent advances in the development of controlled-release formulations and discuss details of the preparation methods, material improvements, and application technologies.

Direct separation and purification of α-lactalbumin from cow milk whey by aqueous two-phase flotation of thermo-sensitive polymer/phosphate. JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE 2021; 101:4173-4182. Abstract
BACKGROUND α-lactalbumin (α-La) is of great interest to the industry as a result of its excellent functional properties and nutritional value. Aqueous two-phase flotation (ATPF) of thermo-sensitive polymer poly (ethylene glycol-ran-propylene glycol) monobutyl ether (UCON) and KH2 PO4 was applied to directly separate and purify α-La from milk whey, which was purposed to simplify the production process and reduced cost of production. RESULTS The effect of ATPF composition and operating parameters on the flotation efficiency (E) and purity of α-La were investigated. The optimal conditions included 2 min of premixing time, 30 mL min-1 flow velocity and 20 min of flotation time, whereas the composition conditions comprised 35.0 mL 0.18 g mL-1 phosphate solution (containing 10% (cow milk whey/salt solution, v/v) cow milk whey, 50 ppm defoamer and 2 g NaCl) and 5.0 mL of 40% (w/w) UCON solution. Under the optimal conditions, E of α-La was 95.67 ± 1.04% and purity of α-La was 98.78 ± 1.19%. UCON was recovered by a thermally-induced phase separation and reused in next ATPF process without reducing E of α-La. Purified α-La was characterized by several key technologies. The results indicated that α-La in cow milk whey could be directly separated and purified by the ATPF and the purity was satisfactory. Moreover, it was suggested there was no obvious structure difference between the α-La separated by ATPF and the α-La standard. CONCLUSION The present study enabled the recycling of UCON, providing an effective, economically viable and environmentally friendly approach for the separation and purification of protein. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
To seek novel and safe protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO, EC 1.3.3.4) inhibitors with excellent herbicidal activity. A series of novel phenoxypyridine derivatives containing natural product coumarins with allelopathy were designed and synthesized based on bioisosterism and active subunit combination in this research. Compounds W3.1 and W3.4, with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 0.02653 mg/L and 0.01937 mg/L, respectively, displayed excellent herbicidal activity in greenhouse. Their herbicidal activity was similar to commercial herbicide oxyfluorfen (IC50 = 0.04943 mg/L). The best field inhibitory effect of compounds W3.1 and W3.4 recorded was at doses of 450 g ai/ha and 300 g ai/ha, respectively. Compound W3.4 had the best herbicidal activity among all the target compounds in this paper. Molecular docking analysis revealed that compounds W3.1 and W3.4 could form a hydrogen bonds with the amino acid AGR-98 and a π-π superposition with the amino acid PHE-398, respectively, which was similar to the oxyfluorfen. The crop selectivity tests results indicated that maize, cotton and soybean showed high tolerance to compound W3.4. Compound W3.4 reduced the Ca and Cb contents of wheat and rice, but had less effect on maize, cotton and soybean. Selectivity of compound W3.4 in maize, cotton and soybean were appeared to be due to reduced absorption of the herbicide compared to wheat and rice. Compound W3.4 deserves further attention as a candidate structure for new herbicides.

Abstract
In this study, flexible and self-standing hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/difenoconazole inclusion complex (HPβCD/DZ-IC) nanofibers were prepared by polymer-free electrospinning, which exhibited potential to be a new fast-dissolving pesticide formulation. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy were applied to evaluate the morphology of nanofibers, which showed that the resulting HPβCD/DZ-IC nanofibers were bead-free and uniform. In addition, the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrum suggested a stoichiometric ratio of 1:0.9 (HPβCD/DZ). Other characterization methods, such as UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were applied in this study. On the one hand, UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, and TGA provided useful information for the successful formation of an inclusion complex; on the other hand, the results of TGA indicated the thermal stability of DZ was enhanced after the formation of inclusion complexes. Besides, the phase solubility test could explain the increased water solubility of the nanofibers of inclusion complexes formed by DZ and HPβCD. The results of molecular docking studies demonstrated the most favorable binding interactions when HPβCD combined with DZ. The dissolution test and the antifungal performance test exhibited the characteristics of fast dissolution and the excellent antifungal performance of HPβCD/DZ-IC nanofibers, respectively.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) and cyclodextrin (CD)-based polymers are well-known complexing agents. One of their distinctive features is to increase the quantity of a drug in a solution or improve its delivery. However, in certain instances, the activity of the solutions is increased not only due to the increase of the drug dose but also due to the drug complexation. Based on numerous studies reviewed, the drug appeared more active in a complex form. This review aims to summarize the performance of CDs and CD-based polymers as activity enhancers. Accordingly, the review is divided into two parts, i.e., the effect of CDs as active drugs and as enhancers in antimicrobials, antivirals, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neuroprotective agents, and antioxidants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Isoxaflutole (IXF), as a kind of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor, has been widely used in many kinds of plants. IXF can cause injury in corn including leaf and stem bleaching, plant height reduction or stunting, and reduced crop stand. Safeners are co-applied with herbicides to protect crops without compromising weed control efficacy. With the ultimate goal of addressing Zea mays injury caused by IXF, a series of novel substituted dichloroacetylphenyl sulfonamide derivatives was designed on the basis of scaffold hopping and active substructure splicing. RESULTS A total of 35 compounds were synthesized via acylation reactions. All the compounds were characterized by infrared (IR), proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR), and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The configuration of compound II-1 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The bioassay results showed that all the title compounds displayed remarkable protection against IXF via improved content of carotenoid. Especially compound II-1 which possessed better glutathione transferases (GSTs) activity and carotenoid content than the contrast safener cyprosulfamide (CSA). All the satisfied parameters suggested that the Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA) model was reliable and stable [with a cross-validated coefficient (q2 ) = 0.527, r2 = 0.995, r2 pred = 0.931]. The molecular docking simulation indicated that the compound II-1 and CSA could compete with diketonitrile (DKN) at the active site of HPPD, which is a hydrolyzed product of IXF in plants, causing the herbicide to be ineffective. CONCLUSIONS The present work revealed that the compound II-1 deserves further attention as the candidate structure of safeners. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The electrospinning of thiram/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofiber (thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF) was produced for establishing a quick dissolving water-based drug delivery system. As a dithiocarbamate broad-spectrum fungicide, thiram is insoluble in water. High-concentration HPβCD solutions (180 %, w/v) were applied in thiram/HPβCD systems to implement electrospinning with no extra polymer matrix added. The formation of thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction as well as nuclear magnetic resonance. Phase solubility study proved HPβCD played a huge role in the improvement in solubility of thiram, and thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF showed an excellent dissolution rate. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the configuration of surface of thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF, which exhibited that thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF was uniform and beadless. In addition, thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF exhibited better antifungal activity and thermal stability than pure thiram. In summary, thiram/HPβCD-IC-NF drug delivery system contributed to water solubility, thermal stability and antifungal activity of thiram. It could provide a new idea for the development of new formulations of rapidly dissolving green pesticides, and made efforts to promote the sustainable development of agriculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herbicide safeners mitigate crop damage without reducing herbicide efficacy. Here, the protective effects of phenoxyacetyl oxazolidine derivatives as potential safeners were evaluated with a view toward reducing injury caused by sulfonylurea herbicide nicosulfuron to sensitive maize varieties. RESULTS Growth indices demonstrated that the bioactivity of compound 9 (N-phenoxyacety-2-methyl-2,4-diethyl-1,3-oxazolidine) was superior to that of R-28725 and all other compounds tested. Compound 9 induced endogenous glutathione and upregulated glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in maize. Thus, it could enhance maize tolerance to nicosulfuron. Compared with the untreated water control group, the maximum reaction rate of GST was increased by 37.62%, while the maximum velocity of GST was decreased by 61.93% after treatment with compound 9. Acetolactate synthase relative activity was significantly enhanced in the case of treatment with compound 9, indicating the excellent protective effects of compound 9 against nicosulfuron in maize. CONCLUSIONS The present work demonstrates that phenoxyacetyl oxazolidine derivatives are potentially efficacious as herbicide safeners and merit further investigation.

Abstract
Herbicide safeners enhance herbicide detoxification in crops without affecting target weed sensitivity. To enhance crop tolerance to the toxicity-related stress caused by the herbicide acetochlor (ACT), a new class of substituted phenyl isoxazole derivatives was designed by an intermediate derivatization method as herbicide safeners. Microwave-assisted synthesis was used to prepare the phenyl isoxazole analogues, and all of the structures were confirmed via IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. Compound I-1 was further characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Bioassay results showed that most of the obtained compounds provided varying degrees of safening against ACT-induced injury by increasing the corn growth recovery, glutathione content, and glutathione S-transferase activity. In particular, compound I-20 showed excellent safener activity against ACT toxicity, comparable to that of the commercial safener benoxacor. Gaussian calculations have been performed and the results indicated that the nucleophilic ability of compound I-20 is higher than that of benoxacor, thus the activity is higher than that of benoxacor. These findings demonstrate that phenyl isoxazole derivatives possess great potential for protective management in cornfields.

Abstract
A novel “turn-on” fluorescent probe (PCN) was designed, synthesized, and characterized with perylene tetracarboxylic disimide as the fluorophore and Schiff base subunit as the metal ion receptor. The probe demonstrated a considerable fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+ in DMF with high selectivity and sensitivity. Furthermore, the considerably “off–on” fluorescence response simultaneously led to the apparent color change from colorless to brilliant yellow, which could also be identified by naked eye easily. The sensing capability of PCN to Al3+ was evaluated by the changes in ultraviolet–visible, fluorescence, Fourier transform–infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry spectroscopies. The linear concentration range for Al3+ was 0–63 μM with a detection limit of 0.16 μM, which allowed for the quantitative determination of Al3+.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thiabendazole (TBZ) is a poorly water-soluble benzimidazole fungicide. However, the water solubility of TBZ can be significantly enhanced by inclusion complexation with cyclodextrins. In this study, a thiabendazole/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (TBZ/HPβCD) complex was synthesized and electrospinning was performed to produce a TBZ/HPβCD nanofibrous (TBZ/HPβCD-NF) complex that improved water solubility and antifungal activity. RESULTS The formation of TBZ/HPβCD-NF was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. The morphology of TBZ/HPβCD-NF was studied by scanning electron microscopy. A phase solubility experiment showed that HPβCD exerted a great solubilization effect on TBZ, and TBZ/HPβCD-NF had better antifungal activity compared to that of TBZ alone. CONCLUSIONS In summary, the solid fungicidal nanodispersion prepared in the present study is a new type of formulation that can enhance the water solubility of TBZ. This formulation, which demonstrated potential as a new fast dissolving formulation type with increased efficacy, is expected to be conducive to the sustainable development of agriculture. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Based on the Virtual Screening of Multiple Pharmacophores, Docking and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Approaches toward the Discovery of Novel HPPD Inhibitors. Int J Mol Sci 2020; 21:ijms21155546. Abstract
4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is an iron-dependent non-heme oxygenase involved in the catabolic pathway of tyrosine, which is an important enzyme in the transformation of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid to homogentisic acid, and thus being considered as herbicide target. Within this study, a set of multiple structure-based pharmacophore models for HPPD inhibitors were developed. The ZINC and natural product database were virtually screened, and 29 compounds were obtained. The binding mode of HPPD and its inhibitors obtained through molecular docking study showed that the residues of Phe424, Phe381, His308, His226, Gln307 and Glu394 were crucial for activity. Molecular-mechanics-generalized born surface area (MM/GBSA) results showed that the coulomb force, lipophilic and van der Waals (vdW) interactions made major contributions to the binding affinity. These efforts will greatly contribute to design novel and effective HPPD inhibitory herbicides.

Abstract
4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD, EC 1.13.11.27) is the second enzyme of the tyrosine catabolic pathway. Its physiological function is to catalyze the conversion of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid to homogentisic acid, which displays different physiological effects in mammals and plants. Insights on the selective inhibition of human HPPD (hHPPD) by triketone inhibitors were furnished by the integrated application of molecular simulation and biological testing. The binding free energy of hHPPD and inhibitors was obtained through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and the result was in agreement with the inhibition experiment in vitro. The binding free energy contribution demonstrated that the formation of hHPPD-inhibitor complexes was mainly driven by van der Waals energy. Ser226, Asn241, Gln265, Phe336, Phe359 and Phe364 made great contributions to binding affinities of all the systems. Among the residues involved in the interaction between nitisinone (NTBC) and hHPPD, Tyr221 and Leu224, whose mutation into Ala caused significant decrease of NTBC binding ability, were two key residues in determining the selective binding affinity of inhibitor and hHPPD. This work provides valuable theoretical basis for rational design of highly selective inhibitors targeting hHPPD.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to conjugate phosvitin (Pv) with gallic acid (GA) to explore a new emulsifier that had both good emulsifying properties and antioxidant activity. The Pv-GA complex was prepared at a GA concentration of 1.5 mg/mL with pH 9.0. The Pv-GA complex obtained was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and characterized with infrared, ultraviolet, and fluorescence spectra. The emulsifying activity and stability of the Pv-GA complex were slightly improved, and antioxidant activities was significantly enhanced. Furthermore, the Pv-GA complex was used to load conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) for microemulsion preparation. Results showed that the Pv-GA complex could increase the viscosity and lipid antioxidant capacity of Pv-GA/CLA microemulsion. The Pv-GA/CLA microemulsion had remarkable emulsifying activity, emulsifying stability, pH, and thermal stability and poor salt stability.
