Preparation of amino acid chiral ionic liquid and visual chiral recognition of glutamine and phenylalanine enantiomers

In this paper, the amino acid chiral ionic liquid (AACIL) was prepared with L-phenylalanine and imidazole. It was characterized by CD, FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectrum. The chiral recognition sensor was constructed with AACIL and Cu(II), which exhibited different chiral visual responses (solubility or color difference) to the enantiomers of glutamine (Gln) and phenylalanine (Phe). The effects of solvent, pH, time, temperature, metal ions, and other amino acids on visual chiral recognition were optimized. The minimum concentrations of Gln and Phe for visual chiral recognition were 0.20 mg/ml and 0.28 mg/ml, respectively. The mechanism of chiral recognition was investigated by FT-IR, TEM, SEM, TG, XPS, and CD. The location of the host-guest inclusion or molecular placement has been conformationally searched based on Gaussian 09 software.

Challenging DESs and ILs in the valorization of food waste: a case study

In this study, the efficacy of two of the best performing green solvents for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, cholinium arginate (ChArg) as biobased ionic liquid (Bio-IL) and ChCl:lactic acid (ChCl:LA, 1:10) as natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES), was investigated and compared in the pretreatment of an agri-food industry waste, apple fibers (90°C for 1 h). For the sake of comparison, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (BMIM OAc) as one of the best IL able to dissolve cellulose was also used. After the pretreatment, two fractions were obtained in each case. The results gathered through FTIR and TG analyses of the two materials and the subsequent DNS assay performed after enzymatic treatment led to identify ChArg as the best medium to delignify and remove waxes, present on the starting apple fibers, thus producing a material substantially enriched in cellulose (CRM). Conversely, ChCl:LA did not provide satisfactorily results using these mild conditions, while BMIM OAc showed intermediate performance probably on account of the reduced crystallinity of cellulose after the dissolution-regeneration process. To corroborate the obtained data, FTIR and TG analyses were also performed on the residues collected after the enzymatic hydrolysis. At the end of the pretreatment, ChArg was also quantitatively recovered without significant alterations.

A comprehensive study demonstrating the influence of the solvent composition on the phytotoxicity of compounds, as exemplified by 2,4-D-based ILs with a choline-type cation

BACKGROUND

Growing concern for the protection of the environment and existing ecosystems has resulted in increasing consideration of phytotoxicity tests as valid ecotoxicological indicators of the potential hazards of the use of ionic liquids (ILs) or any other chemical. The objective of this study was to gain a detailed understanding of the influence of the solvent composition of spray solutions on the phytotoxic effect of foliar application of ionic pairs with weak (choline 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate, [Chol][2,4-D]), medium (N-hexylcholine 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate, [C6 Chol][2,4-D]) and good (N-dodecylcholine 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate, [C12 Chol][2,4-D]) surface-active properties.

RESULTS

Experimental results unambiguously demonstrated that the biological activity of the test salt solutions, particularly [Chol][2,4-D] and [C6 Chol][2,4-D], can be strongly affected by the addition of an organic solvent, such as methanol, ethanol, dimethylformamide (DMF) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) compared to solutions in pure water. However, the observed tendency is less pronounced for the compound exhibiting good surface activity, [C12 Chol][2,4-D].

CONCLUSIONS

The collected findings show that caution is warranted in the exploitation or modification of methodologies for assessing phytotoxicity to ensure the reliable interpretation of obtained results for environmental risk assessment or building quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Separation of Palladium from Alkaline Cyanide Solutions through Microemulsion Extraction Using Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

In this paper, three imidazolium-based ionic liquids, viz., 1-butyl-3-undecyl imidazolium bromide ([BUIm]Br), 1-butyl-3-octyl imidazolium bromide ([BOIm]Br), and 1-butyl-3-hexadecyl imidazolium bromide ([BCIm]Br), were synthesized. Three novel microemulsions systems were constructed and then were used to recover Pd (II) from cyanide media. Key extraction parameters such as the concentration of ionic liquids (ILs), equilibration time, phase ratio (R_A/O), and pH were evaluated. The [BUIm]Br/n-heptane/n-pentanol/sodium chloride microemulsion system exhibited a higher extraction percentage of Pd (II) than the [BOIm]Br/n-heptane/n-pentanol/sodium chloride and [BCIm]Br/n-heptane/n-pentanol/sodium chloride microemulsion systems. Under the optimal conditions (equilibrium time of 10 min and pH 10), the extraction percentages of these metals were all higher than 98.5% when using the [BUIm]Br/n-heptane/n-pentanol/sodium chloride microemulsion system. Pd(CN)₄^2- was separated through a two-step stripping procedure, in which Fe (III) and Co (III) were first separated using KCl solution, then Pd(CN)₄^2- was stripped using KSCN solution (separation factors of Pd from Fe and Co exceeded 10³). After five extraction-recovery experiments, the recovery of Pd (II) through the microemulsion system remained over 90%. The Pd (II) extraction mechanism of the ionic liquid [BUIm]Br was determined to occur via anion exchange, as shown by spectral analysis (UV, FTIR), Job's method, and DFT calculations. The proposed process has potential applications for the comprehensive treatment of cyanide metallurgical wastewater.

Screening of Ionic Liquids against Bamboo Mildew and Its Inhibition Mechanism

Ionic liquids are a class of organic molten salts that consist entirely of cations and anions. They are characterized by their low vapor pressure, low viscosity, low toxicity, high thermal stability, and strong antifungal potential. In this study, the inhibitory performance of ionic liquid cations against Penicillium citrinum, Trichoderma viride, and Aspergillus niger was investigated, along with the mechanism of cell membrane disruption. The Oxford cup method, SEM, and TEM were employed to examine the extent of damage and the specific site of action of ionic liquids on the mycelium and cell structure of these fungi. The results showed that 1-decyl-3-methylimidazole had a strong inhibitory effect on TV; benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride had a weak inhibitory effect on PC, TV, AN, and a mixed culture; while dodecylpyridinium chloride exhibited significant inhibitory effects on PC, TV, AN, and Mix, with more prominent effects observed on AN and Mix, exhibiting MIC values of 5.37 mg/mL, 5.05 mg/mL, 5.10 mg/mL, and 5.23 mg/mL, respectively. The mycelium of the mildews showed drying, partial loss, distortion, and uneven thickness. The cell structure showed separation of the plasma wall. The absorbance of the extracellular fluid of PC and TV reached the maximum after 30 min, while that of AN reached the maximum after 60 min. The pH of the extracellular fluid decreased initially and then increased within 60 min, followed by a continuous decrease. These findings provide important insights for the application of ionic liquid antifungal agents in bamboo, medicine, and food.

Lignosulfonate-Based Ionic Liquids as Asphaltene Dispersants

Asphaltenes are recognized as being troublesome from upstream to downstream in the oil industry due to their tendency to precipitate and self-associate. Their extraction from asphaltenic crude oil for a cost-effective refining process is a crucial and critical challenge in the oil and gas sector. Lignosulfonate (LS), as a by-product of the wood pulping process in the papermaking industry, is a highly available and underutilized feedstock. This study aimed to synthesize novel LS-based ionic liquids (ILs) by reacting lignosulfonate acid sodium salt [Na]₂[LS] with different alkyl chains of piperidinium chloride for asphaltene dispersion. The synthesized ILs, 1-hexyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C₆C₁Pip]₂[LS], 1-octyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C₈C₁Pip]₂[LS], 1-dodecyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C₁₂C₁Pip]₂[LS] and 1-hexadecyl-1-methyl-piperidinium lignosulfonate [C₁₆C₁Pip]₂[LS] were characterized using FTIR-ATR and ¹H NMR for functional groups and structural confirmation. The ILs depicted high thermal stability because of the presence of a long side alkyl chain and piperidinium cation following thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Asphaltene dispersion indices (%) of ILs were tested by varying contact time, temperature and ILs concentration. The obtained indices were high for all ILs, with a dispersion index of more than 91.2% [C₁₆C₁Pip]₂[LS], representing the highest dispersion at 50,000 ppm. It was able to lower asphaltene particle size diameter from 51 nm to 11 nm. The kinetic data of [C₁₆C₁Pip]₂[LS] were consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The dispersion index (%), asphaltene particle growth and the kinetic model agreed with the molecular modeling studies of the HOMO-LUMO energy of IL holds.

Ionic Liquids Facilitate the Dispersion of Branched Polyethylenimine Grafted ZIF-8 for Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been previously shown as an emerging modified class of epoxy resin. In this work, we report a simple strategy for preventing zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles from agglomerating in epoxy resin (EP). Branched polyethylenimine grafted ZIF-8 in ionic liquid (BPEI-ZIF-8) nanofluid with good dispersion was prepared successfully using an ionic liquid as both the dispersant and curing agent. Results indicated that the thermogravimetric curve of the composite material had no noticeable change with increasing BPEI-ZIF-8/IL content. The glass transition temperature (T_g) of the epoxy composite was reduced with the addition of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL. The addition of 2 wt% BPEI-ZIF-8/IL into EP effectively improved the flexural strength to about 21.7%, and the inclusion of 0.5 wt% of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL EP composites increased the impact strength by about 83% compared to pure EP. The effect of adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL on the T_g of epoxy resin was explored, and its toughening mechanism was analyzed in combination with SEM images showing fractures in the EP composites. Moreover, the damping and dielectric properties of the composites were improved by adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL.

An Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid as a Model to Study Plasticization Effects on Cationic Polymethacrylate Films

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been touted as effective and environmentally friendly agents, which has driven their application in the biomedical field. The study compares the effectiveness of an IL agent, 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([HMIM]Cl), to current industry standards for plasticizing a methacrylate polymer. Industrial standards glycerol, dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and the combination of [HMIM]Cl with a standard plasticizer was also evaluated. Plasticized samples were evaluated for stress-strain, long-term degradation, thermophysical characterizations, and molecular vibrational changes within the structure, and molecular mechanics simulations were performed. Physico-mechanical studies showed that [HMIM]Cl was a comparatively good plasticizer than current standards reaching effectiveness at 20-30% w/w, whereas plasticizing of standards such as glycerol was still inferior to [HMIM]Cl even at concentrations up to 50% w/w. Degradation studies show HMIM-polymer combinations remained plasticized for longer than other test samples, >14 days, compared to glycerol <5 days, while remaining more pliable. The combination of [HMIM]Cl-DOP was effective at concentrations >30% w/w, demonstrating remarkable plasticizing capability and long-term stability. ILs used as singular agents or in tandem with other standards provided equivalent or better plasticizing activity than the comparative free standards.

Betaine- and L-Carnitine-Based Ionic Liquids as Solubilising and Stabilising Agents for the Formulation of Antimicrobial Eye Drops Containing Diacerein

The therapeutic efficacy of topically administered drugs, however powerful, is largely affected by their bioavailability and, thus, ultimately, on their aqueous solubility and stability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as functional excipients to solubilise, stabilise, and prolong the ocular residence time of diacerein (DIA) in eye drop formulations. DIA is a poorly soluble and unstable anthraquinone prodrug, rapidly hydrolysed to rhein (Rhe), for the treatment of osteoarthritis. DIA has recently been evaluated as an antimicrobial agent for bacterial keratitis. Two ILs based on natural zwitterionic compounds were investigated: L-carnitine C6 alkyl ester bromide (Carn6), and betaine C6 alkyl ester bromide (Bet6). The stabilising, solubilising, and mucoadhesive properties of ILs were investigated, as well as their cytotoxicity to the murine fibroblast BALB/3T3 clone A31 cell line. Two IL-DIA-based eye drop formulations were prepared, and their efficacy against both Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was determined. Finally, the eye drops were administered in vivo on New Zealand albino rabbits, testing their tolerability as well as their elimination and degradation kinetics. Both Bet6 and Carn6 have good potential as functional excipients, showing solubilising, stabilising, mucoadhesive, and antimicrobial properties; their in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo ocular tolerability pave the way for their future use in ophthalmic applications.

Study of Lithium-Extraction Systems Based on Benzo-15-Crown-5 Ether and Alkylimidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid

The extraction of lithium from aqueous solutions of LiNTf₂ and LiCl salts using benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5) as an extractant in [C8mim][NTf₂] ionic liquid was studied. The transition of the extractant into the aqueous phase and the distribution of Cl^- ions during lithium extraction from LiCl solutions were determined. LiNTf₂ complexes with B15C5 with different LiNTf₂:B15C5 ratios were isolated for the first time and characterized via X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Differences in the extraction process of LiCl and LiNTf₂ were determined via an infrared spectroscopic study of the extraction systems.

Synthesis and Behavior of Hexamethylenetetramine-Based Ionic Liquids as an Active Ingredient in Latent Curing Formulations with Ethylene Glycol for DGEBA

The paper presents the preparation of new ionic liquids based on hexamethylenetetramine with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and dicyanamide anion, which were characterized in detail in terms of their purity (Ion Chromatography) and thermal properties (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), as well as stability. The obtained substances were used to develop curing systems with ethylene glycol, which were successfully tested for their application with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether molecule. In addition, the curing process and its relationship to the structure of the ionic liquid are characterized in detail. The research showed that hexamethylenetetramine-based new ionic liquids can be successfully designed using well-known and simple synthetic methods-the Delepine reaction. Moreover, attention was paid to their stability, related limitations, and the application of hexamethylenetetramine-based ionic liquids in epoxy-curing systems.

Investigation of H2O2 Electrochemical Behavior on Ferricyanide-Confined Electrode Based on Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Silica-Mesostructured Cellular Foam

In this work, ionic liquid (IL) of 1-propyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride-functionalized silica-mesostructured cellular foam (MCF) was prepared. The obtained MCF-IL was used to construct the Fe(CN)₆^3--confined electrode (MCF-IL-Fe(CN)₆^3-/PVA) and H₂O₂ electrochemical behavior on the electrode was investigated. It was found that H₂O₂ was oxidized on the freshly prepared electrode while catalytically electro-reduced on the acid pretreated one. Cyclic voltametric results revealed that the real catalyst for catalytic reduction of H₂O₂ was Prussian blue (PB) rather than Fe(CN)₆^3-. The electrocatalytic ability of the acid-pretreated MCF-IL-Fe(CN)₆^3-/PVA electrode offered a wide linear range for H₂O₂ detection. The present study on H₂O₂ electrochemical behavior on an MCF-IL-Fe(CN)₆^3-/PVA electrode might provide useful information for further developing integrated Fe(CN)₆^3--mediated biosensors as H₂O₂ is extensively involved in the classic reaction containing oxidase enzymes.

The Structure-Property Relationship of Pyrrolidinium and Piperidinium-Based Bromide Organic Materials

Two couples of dicationic ionic liquids, featuring pyrrolidinium and piperidinium cations and different linker chains, were prepared and characterized. 1,1'-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(1-methylpyrrolidinium) bromide, 1,1'-(octane-1,8-diyl)bis(1-methylpyrrolidinium) bromide, 1,1'-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(1-methylpiperidinium) bromide, and 1,1'-(octane-1,8-diyl)bis(1-methylpiperidinium) bromide were synthesized in quantitative yields and high purity and thermally characterized through TGA and DSC analysis. In this study, we propose a preliminary comparative evaluation of the effect of the linker chain length and of the size of the aliphatic ammonium ring on the thermal and solubility properties of bromide dicationic ionic liquids.

Thermal Decomposition, Low Temperature Phase Transitions and Vapor Pressure of Less Common Ionic Liquids Based on the Bis(trifuoromethanesulfonyl)imide Anion

Four ionic liquids (ILs) based on the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf₂) anion were synthesized and characterized concerning their thermal stability, the occurrence of low temperature phase transitions and their volatility. All these physical quantities are highly important for possible applications. Both monocationic and dicationic ILs were considered. All ILs exhibit thermal stability exceeding 350 °C, an extremely high value, due to the presence of the NTf₂ anion. Monocationic ILs can undergo crystallization, and they melt at 1 and 38 °C. On the contrary, dicationic ILs containing large positively charged ions display only a glass transition around −40 °C, without any crystallization or melting process; this fact is particularly important in view of the possibly low temperature applications of the dication ILs. The vapor pressure, p_v, of the four ILs was measured by isothermal thermogravimetry in the temperature range between 250 and 325 °C; the lowest values of p_v were obtained for the two dicationic liquids, suggesting that they are particularly well suited for high temperature applications. The vaporization enthalpy was calculated through the Clausius–Clapeyron equation and was found in the range between ~140 and ~180 kJ/mol depending on the specific IL.

Validation of Structural Grounds for Anomalous Molecular Mobility in Ionic Liquid Glasses

Ionic liquid (IL) glasses have recently drawn much interest as unusual media with unique physicochemical properties. In particular, anomalous suppression of molecular mobility in imidazolium IL glasses vs. increasing temperature was evidenced by pulse Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Although such behavior has been proven to originate from dynamics of alkyl chains of IL cations, the role of electron spin relaxation induced by surrounding protons still remains unclear. In this work we synthesized two deuterated imidazolium-based ILs to reduce electron-nuclear couplings between radical probe and alkyl chains of IL, and investigated molecular mobility in these glasses. The obtained trends were found closely similar for deuterated and protonated analogs, thus excluding the relaxation-induced artifacts and reliably demonstrating structural grounds of the observed anomalies in heterogeneous IL glasses.

Expanding the Chemical Space of Benzimidazole Dicationic Ionic Liquids

Benzimidazole dicationic ionic liquids (BDILs) have not yet been widely explored in spite of their potential. Therefore, two structurally related families of BDILs, paired with either bromide or bistriflimide anions and bearing alkyl spacers ranging from C3 to C6, have been prepared. Their thermal properties have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while their electrical properties have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV). TG analysis confirmed the higher stability of the bistriflimide BDILs over the bromide BDILs, with minor variation within the two families. Conversely, DSC and CV allowed for ascertaining the role played by the spacer length. In particular, the thermal behavior changed dramatically among the members of the bistriflimide family, and all three possible thermal behavior types of ILs were observed. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry showed different electrochemical window (C3(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N < C4(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N, C5(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N < C6(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N) as well as a reduction peak potential, shape, and intensity as a function of the spacer length. The results obtained highlight the benefit of accessing a more structurally diverse pool of compounds offered by dicationic ILs when compared to the parent monocationic ILs. In particular, gains are to be found in the ease of fine-tuning their properties, which translates in facilitating further investigations toward BDILs as designer solvents and catalysts.
