Synthesis, modifications, and applications of iron-based nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are appealing materials as assistant to resolve environmental pollution issues and as recyclable catalysts for the oxidative degradation of resistant contaminants. Moreover, they can significantly influence the advancement of medical applications for imaging, diagnostics, medication administration, and biosensing. On the other hand, due to unique features, excellent biocompatibility, high curie temperatures and low cytotoxicity of the Iron-based nanoparticles, they have received increasing attention in recent years. Using an external magnetic field, in which the ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (FMNPs) in the reaction mixtures can be easily removed, make them more efficient approach than the conventional method for separating the catalyst particles by centrifugation or filtration. Ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (FMNPs) provide various advantages in food processing, environmental issues, pharmaceutical industry, sample preparation, wastewater management, water purification, illness therapy, identification of disease, tissue engineering, and biosensor creation for healthcare monitoring. Modification of FMNPs with the proper functional groups and surface modification techniques play a significant role in boosting their capability. Due to flexibility of FMNPs in functionalization and synthesis, it is possible to make customized FMNPs that can be utilized in variety of applications. This review focuses on synthesis, modifications, and applications of Iron-based nanoparticles.

The Effect of Sintering Temperature on the Densification and Magnetic Performance of NiCuZn-Ferrites (CuO: 0-6 wt.%)

This article reported on the effect of Cu-content and sintering temperature on the magnetic permeability and power losses of monolithic iron-deficient NiCuZn-ferrite components with low Cu-contents aimed to be used for power applications at frequencies up to 1 MHz. In particular NiαZnb1-xCuxFe1.9O4 ferrite compositions are investigated with a constant Ni/Zn atomic ratio a/b = 0.9 and 0 < x < 0.017. As found, the addition of Cu enables the achievement of good magnetic performance at lower sintering temperatures and, therefore, lower production cost. At all Cu-contents, the initial permeability as a function of the sintering temperature passes through a maximum above which structural deterioration due to asymmetric grain growth occurs. The temperature at which this maximum permeability occurs depends on the Cu content and coincides with the achievement of the maximum density of 5.1-5.2 g cm-3 (relative density ~97%). At Cu-contents x = 0.006-0.012 and sintering temperatures 1200-1100 °C power losses (tan(δ)/μ at 1 MHz, 25 °C) οf 50 × 10-6 could be achieved and initial permeabilities (10 kHz, 0.1 mT, 25 °C) of around 400 with very good frequency and temperature stability. At CuO content higher than 4 wt.% (i.e., x > 0.012) and sintering temperatures higher than 1150 °C, pronounced microstructural disturbances due to asymmetric grain growth result in low permeabilities and high losses. It is suggested that at low CuO contents and low sintering temperatures, the densification enhancement may not proceed through Cu-rich phase segregation but through the creation of oxygen vacancies.

Electrospun Cu-Co ferrite nanofibers: synthesis, structure, optical and magnetic properties, and anti-cancer activity

In this study, we investigated Cu-Co ferrite nanofibers (NFs) that were synthesized for the first time employing the electrospinning technique. The structure, phase purity and crystallite size of all the prepared NFs were revealed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. The NFs crystallized in the Fd3̄m (no. 227) space group and the cation distribution arrangement over distinct sites in their structure was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis showed the microstructure of the NFs and verified their expected chemical compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the fibrous nature and the construction of the NFs. The band gap energies derived from the UV-vis reflectance spectra showed a blue shift with an increase in the amount of Cu in the sample from 1.42 eV to 1.86 eV. Magnetization (M) as a function of magnetic field (H) measurements performed at ambient and low temperatures showed the ferrimagnetic behavior of all the NFs. The magnetic parameters including coercivity (Hc), saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent magnetization (Mr), and squareness ratio were determined from the recorded magnetization curves. At 300 K, Ms was reduced from 78.8 to 42.4 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 22.8 to 7.6 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.3 to 1.8μB with an increase in the content of Cu in the samples. The same trend was observed at 10 K, where Ms was reduced from 93.7 to 50.9 emu g-1, Mr reduced from 60.9 to 35.9 emu g-1 and the Bohr magneton reduced from 3.94 to 2.16μB. Alternatively, Hc has the highest values for x = 0 (850 Oe at 300 K and 5220 Oe at 10 K) and x = 0.6 (800 Oe at 300 K and 5400 Oe at 10 K). The anti-cancer activity of the NFs was evaluated using the MTT cell viability assay, showing a reduction in the viability of both HCT-116 and HeLa cancer cells compared to non-cancerous HEK-293 cells after treatment with the NFs. Apoptotic activity was examined by DAPI staining, where treatment with the NFs induced chromatin condensation and nuclear disintegration in HCT-116 cells.

Chemical engineering of cationic distribution in spinel ferrite nanoparticles: the effect on the magnetic properties

A set of ∼9 nm CoFe2O4 nanoparticles substituted with Zn2+ and Ni2+ was prepared by thermal decomposition of metallic acetylacetonate precursors to correlate the effects of replacement of Co2+ with the resulting magnetic properties. Due to the distinct selectivity of these cations for the spinel ferrite crystal sites, we show that it is possible to tailor the magnetic anisotropy, saturation magnetization, and interparticle interactions of the nanoparticles during the synthesis stage. This approach unlocks new possibilities for enhancing the performance of spinel ferrite nanoparticles in specific applications. Particularly, our study shows that the replacement of Co2+ by 48% of Zn2+ ions led to an increase in saturation magnetization of approximately 40% from ∼103 A m2 kg-1 to ∼143 A m2 kg-1, whereas the addition of Ni2+ at a similar percentage led to an ∼30% decrease in saturation magnetization to 68-72 A m2 kg-1. The results of calculations based on the two-sublattice Néel model of magnetization match the experimental findings, demonstrating the model's effectiveness in the strategic design of spinel ferrite nanoparticles with targeted magnetic properties through doping/inversion degree engineering.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: A Review on Synthesis, Characterization, Functionalization, and Biomedical Applications

Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are applied in numerous fields, especially in biomedical applications. Since biofluidic samples and biological tissues are nonmagnetic, negligible background signals can interfere with the magnetic signals from MNPs in magnetic biosensing and imaging applications. In addition, the MNPs can be remotely controlled by magnetic fields, which make it possible for magnetic separation and targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, due to the unique dynamic magnetizations of MNPs when subjected to alternating magnetic fields, MNPs are also proposed as a key tool in cancer treatment, an example is magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Due to their distinct surface chemistry, good biocompatibility, and inducible magnetic moments, the material and morphological structure design of MNPs has attracted enormous interest from a variety of scientific domains. Herein, a thorough review of the chemical synthesis strategies of MNPs, the methodologies to modify the MNPs surface for better biocompatibility, the physicochemical characterization techniques for MNPs, as well as some representative applications of MNPs in disease diagnosis and treatment are provided. Further portions of the review go into the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of composite MNPs with core/shell structures as well as a deeper analysis of MNP properties to learn about potential biomedical applications.

Fabrication and investigation of a pentamerous composite based on calix[4]arene functionalized graphene oxide grafted with silk fibroin, cobalt ferrite, and alginate

This paper presents a new scaffold made from graphene oxide nanosheets, calix[4]arene supramolecules, silk fibroin proteins, cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, and alginate hydrogel (GO-CX[4]/SF/CoFe2O4/Alg). After preparing the composite, we conducted various analyses to examine its structure. These analyses included FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, VSM, DLS, and zeta potential tests. Additionally, we performed tests to evaluate the swelling ratio, rheological properties, and compressive mechanical strength of the material. The biological capability of the composite was tested through biocompatiblity, anticancer, hemolysis, antibacterial anti-biofilm assays. Besides, the rheological properties and swelling behaviour of the composite were studied. The results showed that the scaffold is biocompatible with Hu02 cells and the cell viability percentages of 85.23 %, 82.78 %, and 80.18 % for were acquired for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. In contrast, the cell viability percentage of BT549 cancer cells were obtained 65.79 %, 60.45 % and 58.16 % for same period which confirmed notable anticancer activity of the product composite. Moreover, a significant antibacterial growth inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus species highlights its potential as an effective antibacterial agent. Furthermore, the observed minimal hemolytic effect (6.56 %) and strong inhibition of P. aeruginosa biofilm formation with a low OD value (0.24) indicate notable hemocompatibility and antibacterial activity.

Moringa oleifera Gum-Assisted Synthesis and Characterization of CoAgxFe2-xO4: Insight into Structural, Magnetic, Optical, and Biomedical Properties

The sol-gel method was employed to prepare nano CoFe2O4 and silver-substituted CoFe2O4 nanohybrids (CoAgxFe2-xO4, x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) utilizing Moringa oleifera gum as biofuel. The morphology, size, shape, magnetic, optical, and functional groups of the crystallites were determined using various techniques such as UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Rietveld, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and photoluminescence. The produced nanoferrite has a spherical shape with cubic spinal structures. The optical properties were investigated in two different bands in the photoluminescence emission spectra at 469 and 493 nm. Saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) decrease as the Ag content increases significantly. Furthermore, antibacterial (Gram-positive bacteria bacterial strains, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacterial strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli), antibiofilm activity (E. coli), and antioxidant (DPPH) activities were investigated. The substantial increase in the silver content offers a constructive impact on studied biomedical activities. These findings encourage additional research into the use of hybrid nanoparticles (an amalgamation of ferrite and a noble metal) in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

A comprehensive review on the applications of ferrite nanoparticles in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer

Various conventional treatments including endocrine therapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy have been used for several decades to treat breast cancer; however, these therapies exhibit various life-threatening and debilitating adverse effects in patients. Additionally, combination therapies are required for prompt action as well as to prevent drug resistance toward standard breast cancer medications. Ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly gaining momentum for their application in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Spinel ferrites are particularly used against breast cancer and have shown in vitro and in vivo better efficacy as compared to conventional cancer therapies. Magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, magnetic particle imaging tracers, cell separation, and immune assays are some aspects related to the diagnosis of breast cancer against which different ferrite NPs have been successfully evaluated. Moreover, citrate-coated nickel ferrite, Mg/Zn ferrites, poly amidoamine dendrimers, cobalt ferrites, graphene oxide cobalt ferrites, doxorubicin functionalized cobalt ferrites, chitosan-coated zinc ferrites, PEG-coated cobalt ferrite, and copper ferrite NPs have demonstrated antiproliferative action against different breast cancer cells. Oxaliplatin-loaded polydopamine/BSA-copper ferrites, functionalized cobalt and zinc ferrites of curcumin, oxaliplatin-copper ferrite NPs, tamoxifen/diosgenin encapsulated ZnO/Mn ferrites, and fabricated core-shell fibers of doxorubicin have been developed to increase the bioavailability and anti-proliferative effect and decrease the toxicity of anticancer drugs. These ferrite NPs showed an anticancer effect at different doses in the presence or absence of an external magnetic field. The present review covers the in-depth investigations of ferrite NPs for the diagnosis and management of breast cancer.

Cobalt Ferrite Synthesized Using a Biogenic Sol-Gel Method for Biomedical Applications

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have limitations and severe side effects. Magnetic hyperthermia (MH) is an alternative method that can be used alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiotherapy to treat cancer. Cobalt ferrite particles were synthesized using an innovative biogenic sol-gel method with powder of coconut water (PCW). The obtained powders were subjected to heat treatments between 500 °C and 1100 °C. Subsequently, they were characterized by thermal, structural, magnetic, and cytotoxic analyses to assess their suitability for MH applications. Through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, it was possible to confirm the presence of the pure phase of CoFe2O4 in the sample treated at 1100 °C, exhibiting a saturation magnetization of 84 emu/g at 300 K and an average grain size of 542 nm. Furthermore, the sample treated at 1100 °C showed a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 3.91 W/g, and at concentrations equal to or below 5 mg/mL, is non-cytotoxic, being the most suitable for biomedical applications.

Impact of silver substitution on the structural, magnetic, optical, and antibacterial properties of cobalt ferrite

Silver-doped Cobalt Ferrite nanoparticles AgxCo1-xFe2O4 with concentrations (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) have been prepared using a hydrothermal technique. The XRD pattern confirms the formation of the spinel phase of CoFe2O4 and the presence of Ag ions in the spinel structure. The spinel phase AgxCo1-xFe2O4 nanoparticles are confirmed by FTIR analysis by the major bands formed at 874 and 651 cm-1, which represent the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The analysis of optical properties reveals an increase in band gap energy with increasing concentration of the dopant. The energy band gap values depicted for prepared nanoparticles with concentrations x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 are 3.58 eV, 3.08 eV, 2.93 eV, and 2.84 eV respectively. Replacement of the Co2+ ion with the nonmagnetic Ag2+ ion causes a change in saturation magnetization, with Ms values of 48.36, 29.06, 40.69, and 45.85 emu/g being recorded. The CoFe2O4 and Ag2+ CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were found to be effective against the Acinetobacter Lwoffii and Moraxella species, with a high inhibition zone value of x = 0.15 and 8 × 8 cm against bacteria. It is suggested that, by the above results, the synthesized material is suitable for memory storage devices and antibacterial activity.

Effects of Nonmagnetic Zn2+ Ion and RE Ion Substitution on the Magnetic Properties of Functional Nanomaterials Co1-yZnyRExFe2-xO4 (RE = La, Sm, Gd) by Sol-Gel

Magnetic Functional Nanomaterials Co1-yZnyRExFe2-xO4 (RE (rare-earth) = La,Sm,Gd) were prepared using the sol-gel combustion method. XRD characterization confirms that the ferrite samples we synthesized are single-phase cubic structures. The variation in the average crystalline size and lattice parameter is related to RE ion doping. The Mössbauer spectra of CoRExFe2-xO4 are two sets of magnetic six-wire peaks that indicate the ferrimagnetic behavior of the sample. The calcination temperature greatly influences the absorption area of Mössbauer for CoFe2O4, indicating that the calcination temperature affects the iron ion content at the octahedral B and tetrahedral A sites. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy measurements of the substituted specimens reveal that the ferrite powders are nanoparticles. With an increase in RE ions, the coercivity increases, and the saturation magnetization changes obviously. The XRD characterization of Co0.7Zn0.3LaxFe2-xO4 shows that the main crystalline phase of the sample is the cubic spinel structure phase, and there are fewer secondary crystalline phases. The lattice parameter tends to decrease with the substitution of La3+ ions. The average grain size decreased significantly with the increase in La content. From ferrimagnetic state transition to relaxation behavior, the hyperfine magnetic field decreases in La concentration by room temperature Mössbauer spectra. With the substitution of La3+ ions, both the saturation magnetization and coercivity of the samples were reduced, and the coercivity of all samples was lower.

Cobalt Iron Oxide (CoFe2O4) Nanoparticles Induced Toxicity in Rabbits

The market for nanoparticles has grown significantly over the past few decades due to a number of unique qualities, including antibacterial capabilities. It is still unclear how nanoparticle toxicity works. In order to ascertain the toxicity of synthetic cobalt iron oxide (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles (CIONPs) in rabbits, this study was carried out. Sixteen rabbits in total were purchased from the neighborhood market and divided into two groups (A and B), each of which contained eight rabbits. The CIONPs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Crystallinity and phase identification were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The average size of the nanoparticles (13.2 nm) was calculated by Scherrer formula (Dhkl = 0.9 λ/β cos θ) and confirmed by TEM images. The saturation magnetization, 50.1 emug-1, was measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). CIONPs were investigated as contrast agents (CA) for magnetic resonance images (MRI). The relaxivity (r = 1/T) of the MRI was also investigated at a field strength of 0.35 T (Tesla), and the ratio r2/r1 for the CIONPs contrast agent was 6.63. The CIONPs were administrated intravenously into the rabbits through the ear vein. Blood was collected at days 5 and 10 post-exposure for hematological and serum biochemistry analyses. The intensities of the signal experienced by CA with CIONPs were 1427 for the liver and 1702 for the spleen. The treated group showed significantly lower hematological parameters, but significantly higher total white blood cell counts and neutrophils. The results of the serum biochemistry analyses showed significantly higher and lower quantities of different serum biochemical parameters in the treated rabbits at day 10 of the trial. At the microscopic level, different histological ailments were observed in the visceral organs of treated rabbits, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, and brain. In conclusion, the results revealed that cobalt iron oxide (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles induced toxicity via alterations in multiple tissues of rabbits.

Mössbauer and Structure-Magnetic Properties Analysis of AyB1-yCxFe2-xO4 (C=Ho,Gd,Al) Ferrite Nanoparticles Optimized by Doping

A_yB_1-yC_xFe_2-xO₄ (C=Ho,Gd,Al) ferrite powders have been synthesized by the sol-gel combustion route. The X-ray diffraction of the CoHo_xFe_2-xO₄ (x = 0~0.08) results indicated the compositions of single-phase cubic ferrites. The saturation magnetisation of CoHo_xFe_2-xO₄ decreased by the Ho³⁺ ions, and the coercivity increased initially and then decreased with the increase of the calcination temperature. The Mössbauer spectra indicated that CoHo_xFe_2-xO₄ displays a ferrimagnetic behaviour with two normal split Zeeman sextets. The magnetic hyperfine field tends to decrease by Ho³⁺ substitution owing to the decrease of the A-B super-exchange by the paramagnetic rare earth Ho³⁺ ions. The value of the quadrupole shift was very small in the CoHo_xFe_2-xO₄ specimens, indicating that the symmetry of the electric field around the nucleus is good in the cobalt ferrites. The absorption area of the Mössbauer spectra changed with increasing Ho³⁺ substitution, indicating that the substitution influences the fraction of iron ions at tetrahedral A and octahedral B sites. The X-ray diffraction of Mg_0.5Zn_0.5C_xFe_2-xO₄(C=Gd,Al) results confirmed the compositions of single-phase cubic ferrites. The variation of the average crystalline size and lattice constant are related to the doping of gadolinium ions and aluminum ions. With increasing gadolinium ions and aluminum ions, the coercivity increased and the saturation magnetization underwent a significant change. The saturation magnetization of AlMg_0.5Zn_0.5FeO₄ ferrite reached a minimum value (M_S= 1.94 mu/g). The sample exhibited ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic character with the replacement with Gd³⁺ ions, that sample exhibited paramagnetic character with the replacement with Al³⁺ ions, and the isomer shift values indicated that iron is in the form of Fe³⁺ ions.

The toxicity of nanoparticles and their interaction with cells: an in vitro metabolomic perspective

Nowadays, nanomaterials (NMs) are widely present in daily life due to their significant benefits, as demonstrated by their application in many fields such as biomedicine, engineering, food, cosmetics, sensing, and energy. However, the increasing production of NMs multiplies the chances of their release into the surrounding environment, making human exposure to NMs inevitable. Currently, nanotoxicology is a crucial field, which focuses on studying the toxicity of NMs. The toxicity or effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on the environment and humans can be preliminary assessed in vitro using cell models. However, the conventional cytotoxicity assays, such as the MTT assay, have some drawbacks including the possibility of interference with the studied NPs. Therefore, it is necessary to employ more advanced techniques that provide high throughput analysis and avoid interferences. In this case, metabolomics is one of the most powerful bioanalytical strategies to assess the toxicity of different materials. By measuring the metabolic change upon the introduction of a stimulus, this technique can reveal the molecular information of the toxicity induced by NPs. This provides the opportunity to design novel and efficient nanodrugs and minimizes the risks of NPs used in industry and other fields. Initially, this review summarizes the ways that NPs and cells interact and the NP parameters that play a role in this interaction, and then the assessment of these interactions using conventional assays and the challenges encountered are discussed. Subsequently, in the main part, we introduce the recent studies employing metabolomics for the assessment of these interactions in vitro.

Phosphate Capture Enhancement Using Designed Iron Oxide-Based Nanostructures

Phosphates in high concentrations are harmful pollutants for the environment, and new and cheap solutions are currently needed for phosphate removal from polluted liquid media. Iron oxide nanoparticles show a promising capacity for removing phosphates from polluted media and can be easily separated from polluted media under an external magnetic field. However, they have to display a high surface area allowing high removal pollutant capacity while preserving their magnetic properties. In that context, the reproducible synthesis of magnetic iron oxide raspberry-shaped nanostructures (RSNs) by a modified polyol solvothermal method has been optimized, and the conditions to dope the latter with cobalt, zinc, and aluminum to improve the phosphate adsorption have been determined. These RSNs consist of oriented aggregates of iron oxide nanocrystals, providing a very high saturation magnetization and a superparamagnetic behavior that favor colloidal stability. Finally, the adsorption of phosphates as a function of pH, time, and phosphate concentration has been studied. The undoped and especially aluminum-doped RSNs were demonstrated to be very effective phosphate adsorbents, and they can be extracted from the media by applying a magnet.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cobalt-Doped Ferrites for Biomedical Applications

Novel materials for biomedical applications are in critical need of time. In the present work, the antibacterial properties of Co_1-x Ni _x Mg _x Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) are assessed by the disc diffusion method for the common pathogen, that is, Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. Overnight grown bacterial cultures were individually lawn-cultured on nutrient agar plates. All samples of NP concentrations (2 mg/mL) were prepared in sterile water and dispensed by sonication. Sterile filter paper discs (1.0 mm) were saturated by the (doped CoFe₂O₄) NP solution and incubated at 37 ± 0.1 °C for 24 h. The NPs with a fine size of 30-70 nm of Co_1-x Ni _x Mg _x Fe₂O₄ were achieved using the sol-gel method by doping CoFe₂O₄ initially with Ni and codoping with Mg, and their properties were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared techniques. According to the results, Co_0.5Ni_0.25Mg_0.25Fe₂O₄ NPs exhibited potent antibacterial activities against s. aureus having an inhibition zone of 6.5 mm and P. aeruginosa having an inhibition zone of 6 mm as that were examined. The result shows that the bacteriostatic properties of NPs are used for numerous applications such as hyperthermia, antibacterial treatments, and targeted drug delivery.

Crystal-Chemical and Biological Controls of Elemental Incorporation into Magnetite Nanocrystals

Magnetite nanoparticles possess numerous fundamental, biomedical, and industrial applications, many of which depend on tuning the magnetic properties. This is often achieved by the incorporation of trace and minor elements into the magnetite lattice. Such incorporation was shown to depend strongly on the magnetite formation pathway (i.e., abiotic vs biological), but the mechanisms controlling element partitioning between magnetite and its surrounding precipitation solution remain to be elucidated. Here, we used a combination of theoretical modeling (lattice and crystal field theories) and experimental evidence (high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy) to demonstrate that element incorporation into abiotic magnetite nanoparticles is controlled principally by cation size and valence. Elements from the first series of transition metals (Cr to Zn) constituted exceptions to this finding, as their incorporation appeared to be also controlled by the energy levels of their unfilled 3d orbitals, in line with crystal field mechanisms. We finally show that element incorporation into biological magnetite nanoparticles produced by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) cannot be explained by crystal-chemical parameters alone, which points to the biological control exerted by the bacteria over the element transfer between the MTB growth medium and the intracellular environment. This screening effect generates biological magnetite with a purer chemical composition in comparison to the abiotic materials formed in a solution of similar composition. Our work establishes a theoretical framework for understanding the crystal-chemical and biological controls of trace and minor cation incorporation into magnetite, thereby providing predictive methods to tailor the composition of magnetite nanoparticles for improved control over magnetic properties.

A Detailed Review on Synthesis, Functionalization, Application, Challenges, and Current Status of Magnetic Nanoparticles in the Field of Drug Delivery and Gene Delivery System

For progression of health care system, it has always been a challenge to the researchers for formulation to a type of advanced drug delivery system which will have less toxicity, targeted delivery and will be highly biodegradable. Nano science or nanotechnology has been validated to be a successful method as of targeting the drug to its active site be due to its special physicochemical properties and size thereby reducing the dose of administration, increasing bioavailability, and also reducing toxicity. Magnetic nanoparticles recently in few decades have proved as an effective advanced drug delivery system for its elevated magnetic responsiveness, biocompatibility, elevated targeted drug delivery effectiveness, etc. The drug can be easily targeted to active site by application of external magnetic field. Among the various elements, nanoparticles prepared with magnetically active iron oxide or other iron-based spinel oxide nanoparticles are widely used due to its high electrical resistivity, mechanical hardness, chemical stability, etc. Owing to their easy execution towards drug delivery application, extensive research has been carried out in this area. This review paper has summarized all recent modifications of iron-based magnetically active nanoparticle based drug delivery system along with their synthesis, characterization, and applications.

Anti-cancer activity of sustained release capsaicin formulations

Capsaicin (trans-8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-noneamide) is a hydrophobic, lipophilic vanilloid phytochemical abundantly found in chili peppers and pepper extracts. Several convergent studies show that capsaicin displays robust cancer activity, suppressing the growth, angiogenesis and metastasis of several human cancers. Despite its potent cancer-suppressing activity, the clinical applications of capsaicin as a viable anti-cancer drug have remained problematic due to its poor bioavailability and aqueous solubility properties. In addition, the administration of capsaicin is associated with adverse side effects like gastrointestinal cramps, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea and vomiting. All these hurdles may be circumvented by encapsulation of capsaicin in sustained release drug delivery systems. Most of the capsaicin-based the sustained release drugs have been tested for their pain-relieving activity. Only a few of these formulations have been investigated as anti-cancer agents. The present review describes the physicochemical properties, bioavailability, and anti-cancer activity of capsaicin-sustained release agents. The asset of such continuous release capsaicin formulations is that they display better solubility, stability, bioavailability, and growth-suppressive activity than the free drug. The encapsulation of capsaicin in sustained release carriers minimizes the adverse side effects of capsaicin. In summary, these capsaicin-based sustained release drug delivery systems have the potential to function as novel chemotherapies, unique diagnostic imaging probes and innovative chemosensitization agents in human cancers.

Progress in the Preparation and Modification of Zinc Ferrites Used for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Zinc ferrite is a type of photocatalytic material with high physicochemical stability, narrow band gap, high carrier separation efficiency, high porosity, and paramagnetism, which makes it easy to recover. Thus, zinc ferrite is widely used as a photocatalyst in water treatment. In this paper, the preparation principles as well as the advantages and disadvantages of typical methods used to prepare zinc ferrite including hydrothermal, co-precipitation, sol-gel, and other novel methods such as biosynthesis have been summarized. Modification methods such as elemental doping, composite formation, and morphological modification have been highlighted. Using these modification methods, the catalytic activity of zinc ferrite toward the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water has been enhanced. Biosynthesis is regarded as a promising preparation method that uses biological materials instead of chemical materials to achieve the large-scale preparation of zinc ferrite using low cost, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly processes. Meanwhile, the combination of multiple modification techniques to enhance the photocatalytic performance of zinc ferrite will be an important research trend in the future.

Effects of Rhenium Substitution of Co and Fe in Spinel CoFe2O4 Ferrite Nanomaterials

In this work, nanoparticles of Co_1-xRe_xFe₂O₄ and CoFe_2-xRe_xO₄ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The Rietveld refinement analysis of XRD and Raman data revealed that all of the prepared samples were single phase with a cubic spinel-type structure. With the substitution of Re, the lattice parameters were slightly increased, and Raman spectra peak positions corresponding to the movement of the tetrahedral sublattice shifted to a higher energy position. Furthermore, Raman spectra showed the splitting of T_2g mode into branches, indicating the presence of different cations at crystallographic A- and B-sites. The SEM micrograph confirms that surface Re exchange changes the coordination environment of metals and induces Fe-site structure distortion, thereby revealing more active sites for reactions and indicating the bulk sample's porous and agglomerated morphology. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) results demonstrated that the synthesized nanoparticles of all samples were ferromagnetic across the entire temperature range of 300-4 K. The estimated magnetic parameters, such as the saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization, coercivity, blocking temperature (T_B), and magnetic anisotropy, were found to reduce for the Co-site doping with the increasing doping ratio of Re, while in the Fe site, they enhanced with the increasing doping ratio. The ZFC-FC magnetization curve revealed the presence of spin-glass-like behavior due to the strong dipole-dipole interactions in these ferrite nanoparticles over the whole temperature range. Finally, the dielectric constant (ε_r') and dielectric loss (tanδ) were sharply enhanced at low frequencies, while the AC conductivity increased at high frequencies. The sharp increases at high temperatures are explained by enhancing the barrier for charge mobility at grain boundaries, suggesting that samples were highly resistive. Interestingly, these parameters (ε_r', tanδ) were found to be higher for the Fe-site doping with the increasing Re doping ratio compared with the Co site.

Microfluidic Processing of Piezoelectric and Magnetic Responsive Electroactive Microspheres

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) combined with cobalt ferrite (CFO) particles is one of the most common and effective polymeric magnetoelectric composites. Processing PVDF into its electroactive phase is a mandatory condition for featuring electroactive behavior and specific (post)processing may be needed to achieve this state, although electroactive phase crystallization is favored at processing temperatures below 60 °C. Different techniques are used to process PVDF-CFO nanocomposite structures into microspheres with high CFO dispersion, with microfluidics adding the advantages of high reproducibility, size tunability, and time and resource efficiency. In this work, magnetoelectric microspheres are produced in a one-step approach. We describe the production of high content electroactive phase PVDF and PVDF-CFO microspheres using microfluidic technology. A flow-focusing polydimethylsiloxane device is fabricated based on a 3D printed polylactic acid master, which enables the production of spherical microspheres with mean diameters ranging from 80 to 330 μm. The microspheres feature internal and external cavernous structures and good CFO distribution with an encapsulation efficacy of 80% and prove to be in the electroactive γ-phase with a mean content of 75%. The microspheres produced using this approach show suitable characteristics as active materials for tissue regeneration strategies and other piezoelectric polymer applications.

Neurotoxicity Evaluation of Nanomaterials Using C. elegans: Survival, Locomotion Behaviors, and Oxidative Stress

Nanomaterials are broadly used in a variety of industries and consumer products. However, studies have demonstrated that many nanomaterials, including metal-containing nanoparticles and nanoplastics, have neurotoxic effects. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a widely used model organism with numerous advantages for research, including transparency, short life span, well-characterized nervous system, complete connectome, available genome, and numerous genetic tools. C. elegans has been extensively used to assess the neurotoxicity of multiple chemicals via survival assays, behavioral tests, neuronal morphology studies, and various molecular and mechanistic analyses. However, detailed protocols describing general assays in C. elegans to examine the neurotoxic effects of nanomaterials are limited. Here, we describe protocols for assessing nanomaterial neurotoxicity in C. elegans. We describe the steps for exposure and subsequent evaluation of survival, locomotion behavior, and oxidative stress. Survival and locomotion behavior are measured in wild-type N2 strains to assess acute neurotoxicity. Oxidative stress is used as an endpoint here since it is one of the most predominant and common changes induced by nanomaterials. VP596 nematodes, which express GFP upon activation of skn-1 (the worm homolog of Nrf2), are evaluated for assays of oxidative stress in response to test nanomaterials. These assays can be readily used to quickly examine the neurotoxicity of nanomaterials in vivo, laying the foundation for mechanistic studies of nanomaterials and their impacts on health and physiology. © 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC. Formulation and Characterization of Poly (Ethylene Glycol)-Coated Core-Shell Methionine Magnetic Nanoparticles as a Carrier for Naproxen Delivery: Growth Inhibition of Cancer Cells

Simple Summary

Naproxen was loaded onto a magnetic nanoparticle coated with polyethylene glycol. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were used in this study to develop a smart naproxen delivery system. One of the most potent COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors is naproxen, which belongs to the NSAID family of drugs. Although this drug has a short half-life, it has considerable toxicities and side effects on gastrointestinal tissues. The significant potential of our proposed nanocarrier for biomedical applications has been widely recognized; we modified MNPs to attach to this drug via disulfide bonds, promote the selective release of naproxen in inflammatory cells, and prevent adverse effects on the digestive system. It was found that the cytotoxicity of the drug was lowered by this change, which prevented unspecific protein binding.

Abstract

An efficient and selective drug delivery vehicle for cancer cells can remarkably improve therapeutic approaches. In this study, we focused on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) coated with two layers of methionine and polyethylene glycol to increase the loading capacity and lower toxicity to serve as an efficient drug carrier. Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine@PEG NPs were synthesized by a reflux method then characterized by FTIR, XRD, FESEM, TEM, and VSM. Naproxen was used as a model drug and its loading and release in the vehicles were evaluated. The results for loading efficiency showed 1 mg of Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine@PEG NPs could load 0.51 mg of the naproxen. Interestingly, Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine@PEG showed a gradual release of the drug, achieving a time-release up to 5 days, and demonstrated that a pH 5 release of the drug was about 20% higher than Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine NPs, which could enhance the intracellular drug release following endocytosis. At pH 7.4, the release of the drug was slower than Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine NPs; demonstrating the potential to minimize the adverse effects of anticancer drugs on normal tissues. Moreover, naproxen loaded onto the Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine@PEG NPs for breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 showed more significant cell death than the free drug, which was measured by an MTT assay. When comparing both cancer cells, we demonstrated that naproxen loaded onto the Ni_1−xCo_xFe₂O₄@Methionine@PEG NPs exhibited greater cell death effects on the MCF-7 cells compared with the MDA-MB-231 cells. The results of the hemolysis test also showed good hemocompatibility. The results indicated that the prepared magnetic nanocarrier could be suitable for controlled anticancer drug delivery.

Efficacy of surface-functionalized Mg1-x Co x Fe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; Δx = 0.1) for hyperthermia and in vivo MR imaging as a contrast agent

Surface-functionalized Mg1-x Co x Fe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; Δx = 0.1) can be an exciting candidate as an MRI contrast agent and for thermotherapeutic applications. The figure-of-merit, T 2, relaxivity, r 2, of MRI and specific loss power, SLP, of hyperthermia depend on the structural and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. We synthesized cobalt-substituted magnesium ferrite Mg1-x Co x Fe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1 with Δx = 0.1) nanoparticles using a chemical co-precipitation method. The lattice parameter and average crystallite size increase with the increase in cobalt content. The force-constant of FTIR of the tetrahedral sites increases, and that of the octahedral sites decreases with an increase in cobalt content. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra of Mg1-x Co x Fe2O4 show that the Mössbauer absorption area of the A site decreases, and the Mössbauer absorption area of the B site increases with x. The Mössbauer spectra and M-H hysteresis loops at room temperature confirmed that a transition from fast relaxation (superparamagnetic) to mixed slow/fast (superparamagnetic/ferrimagnetic) relaxation occurs with changing cobalt content. The cobalt ion tends to occupy the octahedral B site, which makes the A-B interaction stronger; therefore, we see the above transition. Cytotoxicity experiments on HeLa cells revealed that both chitosan and chitosan-coated magnesium cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are biocompatible. In the Mg1-x Co x Fe2O4 series, both r 2 and SLP increase with x because of the increase in magnetization and anisotropy.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc and Vanadium Co-Substituted CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles Synthesized by Using the Sol-Gel Auto-Combustion Method

In recent years, cobalt ferrite has attracted considerable attention due to its unique physical properties. The present study aimed to produce cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles doped with zinc and vanadium using the sol-gel auto-combustion method. For this purpose, Co_1-xZn_xFe_2-yV_yO₄ (where x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and y = 0.00, 0.05, 0.15, 0.25) precursors were calcined at 800 °C for 3 h. The prepared samples were characterized with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method in combination with Rietveld structure refinement, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and vibrating sample magnetometery (VSM). The XRD patterns confirmed the formation of crystalline spinel structure for all samples. However, the diffraction peaks of hematite and iron vanadium oxide phases were observed in the patterns of some doped samples. The average crystallite size for all the synthesized samples was found to be in the range of ~45-24 nm, implying that it decreased by simultaneously doping cobalt ferrite with Zn and V. The FT-IR spectrum confirmed the formation of the spinal structure of ferrite through the observed vibrational bands assigned to the tetrahedral (υ₂) and octahedral (υ₁) interstitial complexes in the spinel structure. The FE-SEM images showed that morphology, average grain size, and agglomeration of the synthesized powders were affected by doping, which was due to the interactions of the magnetic surface of nanoparticles. The VSM curves demonstrated that saturation magnetization and coercivity values changed in the range of 30-83 emu/g and from 27-913 Oe, respectively. These changes occurred due to the alteration in cation distribution in the spinel structure. This can be attributed to the change in superexchange interactions between magnetic ions by co-substitution of Zn and V ions in Cobalt ferrite and the changes in magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

In vitro characterization of hydroxyapatite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles compounds and their biocompatibility in vivo

Bioactive materials in combination with antibiotics have been widely developed for the treatment of bone infection. Thus, this work aims to characterize six biomaterials formulated with different concentrations of hydroxyapatite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, in addition to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the antibiotic diffusion test on agar. Furthermore, in vivo biocompatibility and the reabsorption process of these materials were analyzed. XRD showed that both hydroxyapatite and cobalt ferrite present high crystallinity. The photomicrographs obtained by SEM revealed that composites have a complex surface, evidenced by the irregular arrangement of the hydroxyapatite and cobalt ferrite granules, besides demonstrating the interaction between their components. The antibiotic-diffusion test showed that all biomaterials produced an inhibition halo in Staphylococcus aureus cultures. For the biocompatibility study, composites were surgically implanted in the dorsal region of rabbits. At 15, 30, 70, and 100 days, biopsies of the implanted regions were performed. The biomaterials were easily identified during histological analysis and no significant inflammatory process, nor histological signs of toxicity or rejection by the adjacent tissue were observed. We can conclude that the biomaterials analyzed are biocompatible, degradable, and effective in inhibiting the in vitro growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Graphical abstract.

Anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities of Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 (x ≤ 0.1) nanoparticles

Combining two or more nanoparticles is a promising approach. Previously we have reported synthesis of nanoparticles Dysprosium (Dy) substituted with manganese (Mn) zinc (Zn) by using ultrasonication method. The five different nanoparticles (NPs) Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 (x ≤ 0.1) have been structurally and morphologically characterized but there is no report on the biological application of these NPs. In the present study, we have examined the anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal activities of Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 (x ≤ 0.1) NPs. Human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116) were tested with different concentrations of NPs by using MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay. In addition, the impact of NPs was also examined on normal cells such as human embryonic kidney cells, HEK-293. After 48 h of treatment, Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 NPs (x = 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) showed no inhibitory action on cancer cell's growth and proliferation, whereas Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 NPs (x = 0.08 and 0.1) showed profound inhibitory action on cancer cell's growth and proliferation. However, the treatment of Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 NPs on the normal cells (HEK-293) did not show cytotoxic or inhibitory action on HEK-293 cells. The treatment of Mn0.5Zn0.5DyxFe2-xO4 NPs (x ≤ 0.1) also inhibited both the bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC35218 and Staphylococcus aureus) with lowest MIC and MBC values of 4 and 8 mg/mL and fungus (Candida albicans) with MIC and MFC values of 4 and 8 mg/mL on treatment with x = 0.08 and 0. 1.

Ag2CO3 containing magnetic nanocomposite as a powerful and recoverable catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation

In this paper, the synthesis, characterization and catalytic application of a novel magnetic silica-supported Ag2CO3 (MS/Ag2CO3) with core-shell structure are developed. The MS/Ag2CO3 nanocomposite was prepared through chemical modification of magnetic MS nanoparticles with AgNO3 under alkaline conditions. The structure, chemical composition and magnetic properties of MS/Ag2CO3 were investigated by using VSM, PXRD, FT-IR, EDX and SEM techniques. The MS/Ag2CO3 nanocomposite was used as an effective catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions at 60 °C in an ultrasonic bath. The recovery and leaching tests were performed to study the nature of the MS/Ag2CO3 catalyst under applied conditions.

Sunlight powered degradation of pentoxifylline Cs0.5Li0.5FeO2 as a green reusable photocatalyst: Mechanism, kinetics and toxicity studies

The degradation of Pentoxifylline (PXF) was achieved successfully by green energy in a built-in solar photocatalytic system using hybrid LiCs ferrites (Li_0.5Cs_0.5FeO₂) as magnetically recoverable photocatalysts. Kinetics showed a first-order reaction rate with maximum PXF removal of 94.91% at mildly acidic pH; additionally, the ferromagnetic properties of catalyst allowed recovery and reuse multiple times, reducing costs and time in degradation processes. The degradation products were identified by HPLC-MS and allowed us to propose a thermodynamically feasible mechanism that was validated through DFT calculations. Additionally, toxicity studies have been performed in bacteria and yeast where high loadings of Cs showed to be harmful to Staphylococcus aureus (MIC≥ 4.0 mg/mL); Salmonella typhi (MIC≥ 8.0 mg/mL) and Candida albicans (MIC≥ 10.0 mg/mL). The presented setup shows effectiveness and robustness in a degradation process using alternative energy sources for the elimination of non-biodegradable pollutants.

Advanced biomedical applications of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids

Ferrofluids or magnetic nanofluids are highly stable colloidal suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed into various base fluids. These stable ferrofluids possess high thermal conductivity, improved thermo-physical properties, higher colloidal stability, good magnetic properties, and biocompatibility, which are the primary driving forces behind their excellent performance, and thus enable them to be used for a wide range of practical applications. The most studied and advanced ferrofluids are based on iron oxide nanostructures especially NPs, because of their easy and large-scale synthesis at low costs. Although in the last decade, several review articles are available on ferrofluids but mainly focused on preparations, properties, and a specific application. Hence, a collective and comprehensive review article on the recent progress of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids for advanced biomedical applications is undeniably required. In this review, the state of the art of biomedical applications is presented and critically analyzed with a special focus on hyperthermia, drug delivery/nanomedicine, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic separation of cells. This review article provides up-to-date information related to the technological advancements and emerging trends in iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids research focused on advanced biomedical applications. Finally, conclusions and outlook of iron oxide nanostructures based ferrofluids research for biomedical applications are presented.

A Perspective on Modelling Metallic Magnetic Nanoparticles in Biomedicine: From Monometals to Nanoalloys and Ligand-Protected Particles

The focus of this review is on the physical and magnetic properties that are related to the efficiency of monometallic magnetic nanoparticles used in biomedical applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia, and how to model these by theoretical methods, where the discussion is based on the example of cobalt nanoparticles. Different simulation systems (cluster, extended slab, and nanoparticle models) are critically appraised for their efficacy in the determination of reactivity, magnetic behaviour, and ligand-induced modifications of relevant properties. Simulations of the effects of nanoscale alloying with other metallic phases are also briefly reviewed.

Novel Polyimide/Copper-Nickel Ferrite Composites with Tunable Magnetic and Dielectric Properties

Heat-resistant magnetic polymer composites were prepared by incorporating cerium-doped copper-nickel ferrite particles, having the general formula Ni_1-xCu_xFe_1.92Ce_0.08O₄ (x: 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0), into a polyimide matrix. The effects of particle type and concentration on the thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of the resulting composites were investigated. The samples were characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, vibrating sample magnetometer, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The composites exhibited high thermal stability, having initial decomposition temperatures between 495 and 509 °C. Saturation magnetization (M_s), magnetic remanence (M_r), and coercivity (H_c) were found in range of 2.37–10.90 emu g⁻¹, 0.45–2.84 emu g⁻¹, and 32–244 Oe, respectively. The study of dielectric properties revealed dielectric constant values of 3.0–4.3 and low dielectric losses of 0.016–0.197 at room temperature and a frequency of 1 Hz.

One-spot fabrication and in-vivo toxicity evaluation of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles

This research, for the first time, report the synthesis of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) consisting poly acrylic acid (PAA) coated cobalt ferrite (CF) using a simple co-precipitation route. Nanocrystalline PAA@CF-NPs, particle size of 9.2 nm, exhibited saturation magnetization as 28.9 emu/g, remnant magnetization as 8.37 emu/g, and coercivity as 543 Oe. Keeping biomedical applications into consideration, PAA@CF-NPs were further analysed to evaluate antimicrobial performance against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) bacteria, and biocompatibility with reference to activated splenic cells. The PAA@CF-NPs were viable to the normal splenic cells (up to 1000 μg/ml) and do not affect the ability of fast dividing ability of the cells (activated splenic cells). An optimized dose of PAA@CF-NPs was intramuscularly administrated (100 μg/ml) into Albino mice to evaluate acute toxicity. The results of these studies suggest that injected PAA@CF-NPs do not affect vital organs mainly including liver and kidneys that confirmed the heptic/renal biocompatibility. The outcomes of this research project such developed nano-system for biomedical applications, mainly for magnetically guided drug delivery and image guided therapies development. However, to support the proposed claims, extended in-vivo studies are required to explore bio-distribution, chronic toxicity, and homeostatic conditions.

Polyethylene Glycol Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles: Hybrid Nanofluid Formulation, Properties and Drug Delivery Prospects

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are widely used materials for biomedical applications owing to their intriguing chemical, biological and magnetic properties. The evolution of MNP based biomedical applications (such as hyperthermia treatment and drug delivery) could be advanced using magnetic nanofluids (MNFs) designed with a biocompatible surface coating strategy. This study presents the first report on the drug loading/release capability of MNF formulated with methoxy polyethylene glycol (referred to as PEG) coated MNP in aqueous (phosphate buffer) fluid. We have selected MNPs (NiFe₂O4, CoFe₂O4 and Fe₃O₄) coated with PEG for MNF formulation and evaluated the loading/release efficacy of doxorubicin (DOX), an anticancer drug. We have presented in detail the drug loading capacity and the time-dependent cumulative drug release of DOX from PEG-coated MNPs based MNFs. Specifically, we have selected three different MNPs (NiFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄ and Fe₃O₄) coated with PEG for the MNFs and compared their variance in the loading/release efficacy of DOX, through experimental results fitting into mathematical models. DOX loading takes the order in the MNFs as CoFe₂O₄ > NiFe₂O₄ > Fe₃O₄. Various drug release models were suggested and evaluated for the individual MNP based NFs. While the non-Fickian diffusion (anomalous) model fits for DOX release from PEG coated CoFe₂O₄, PEG coated NiFe₂O₄ NF follows zero-order kinetics with a slow drug release rate of 1.33% of DOX per minute. On the other hand, PEG coated NiFe₂O₄ follows zero-order DOX release. Besides, several thermophysical properties and magnetic susceptibility of the MNFs of different concentrations have been studied by dispersing the MNPs (NiFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄ and Fe₃O₄) in the base fluid at 300 K under ultrasonication. This report on the DOX loading/release capability of MNF will set a new paradigm in view that MNF can resolve problems related to the self-heating of drug carriers during mild laser treatment with its thermal conducting properties.

Advanced materials and technologies for supercapacitors used in energy conversion and storage: a review

Supercapacitors are increasingly used for energy conversion and storage systems in sustainable nanotechnologies. Graphite is a conventional electrode utilized in Li-ion-based batteries, yet its specific capacitance of 372 mA h g−1 is not adequate for supercapacitor applications. Interest in supercapacitors is due to their high-energy capacity, storage for a shorter period and longer lifetime. This review compares the following materials used to fabricate supercapacitors: spinel ferrites, e.g., MFe2O4, MMoO4 and MCo2O4 where M denotes a transition metal ion; perovskite oxides; transition metals sulfides; carbon materials; and conducting polymers. The application window of perovskite can be controlled by cations in sublattice sites. Cations increase the specific capacitance because cations possess large orbital valence electrons which grow the oxygen vacancies. Electrodes made of transition metal sulfides, e.g., ZnCo2S4, display a high specific capacitance of 1269 F g−1, which is four times higher than those of transition metals oxides, e.g., Zn–Co ferrite, of 296 F g−1. This is explained by the low charge-transfer resistance and the high ion diffusion rate of transition metals sulfides. Composites made of magnetic oxides or transition metal sulfides with conducting polymers or carbon materials have the highest capacitance activity and cyclic stability. This is attributed to oxygen and sulfur active sites which foster electrolyte penetration during cycling, and, in turn, create new active sites.
