Nano-Based Approaches in Surface Modifications of Dental Implants: A Literature Review

Rehabilitation of fully or partially edentulous patients with dental implants represents one of the most frequently used surgical procedures. The work of Branemark, who observed that a piece of titanium embedded in rabbit bone became firmly attached and difficult to remove, introduced the concept of osseointegration and revolutionized modern dentistry. Since then, an ever-growing need for improved implant materials towards enhanced material-tissue integration has emerged. There is a strong belief that nanoscale materials will produce a superior generation of implants with high efficiency, low cost, and high volume. The aim of this review is to explore the contribution of nanomaterials in implantology. A variety of nanomaterials have been proposed as potential candidates for implant surface customization. They can have inherent antibacterial properties, provide enhanced conditions for osseointegration, or act as reservoirs for biomolecules and drugs. Titania nanotubes alone or in combination with biological agents or drugs are used for enhanced tissue integration in dental implants. Regarding immunomodulation and in order to avoid implant rejection, titania nanotubes, graphene, and biopolymers have successfully been utilized, sometimes loaded with anti-inflammatory agents and extracellular vesicles. Peri-implantitis prevention can be achieved through the inherent antibacterial properties of metal nanoparticles and chitosan or hybrid coatings bearing antibiotic substances. For improved corrosion resistance various materials have been explored. However, even though these modifications have shown promising results, future research is necessary to assess their clinical behavior in humans and proceed to widespread commercialization.

Research progress on antibacterial activity of medical titanium alloy implant materials

Titanium and its alloys are the preferred materials for medical implants. However, easy infection is a fatal shortcoming of Ti implants. Fortunately, the ongoing development of antibacterial implant materials is a promising solution, and Ti alloys with antibacterial properties hold immense potential for medical applications. In this review, we briefly outline the mechanisms of bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on implants; discuss and classify the major antimicrobials currently in use and development, including inorganic and organic antimicrobials; and describe the important role of antimicrobials in the development of implant materials for clinical applications. Strategies and challenges related to improving the antimicrobial properties of implant materials as well as the prospects of antibacterial Ti alloys in the medical field are also discussed.

Silver-Containing Biomaterials for Biomedical Hard Tissue Implants

Bacterial infection caused by biomaterials is a very serious problem in the clinical treatment of implants. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has prompted other antibacterial agents to replace traditional antibiotics. Silver is rapidly developing as an antibacterial candidate material to inhibit bone infections due to its significant advantages such as high antibacterial timeliness, high antibacterial efficiency, and less susceptibility to bacterial resistance. However, silver has strong cytotoxicity, which can cause inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, thereby destroying tissue regeneration, making the application of silver-containing biomaterials extremely challenging. In this paper, the application of silver in biomaterials is reviewed, focusing on the following three issues: 1) how to ensure the excellent antibacterial properties of silver, and not easy to cause bacterial resistance; 2) how to choose the appropriate method to combine silver with biomaterials; 3) how to make silver-containing biomaterials in hard tissue implants have further research. Following a brief introduction, the discussion focuses on the application of silver-containing biomaterials, with an emphasis on the effects of silver on the physicochemical properties, structural properties, and biological properties of biomaterials. Finally, the review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions of silver in commercialization and in-depth research.

Recent advances on nanomaterials for antibacterial treatment of oral diseases

An imbalance of bacteria in oral environment can lead to a variety of oral diseases, such as periodontal disease, dental caries, and peri-implant inflammation. In the long term, in view of the increasing bacterial resistance, finding suitable alternatives to traditional antibacterial methods is an important research today. With the development of nanotechnology, antibacterial agents based on nanomaterials have attracted much attention in dental field due to their low cost, stable structures, excellent antibacterial properties and broad antibacterial spectrum. Multifunctional nanomaterials can break through the limitations of single therapy and have the functions of remineralization and osteogenesis on the basis of antibacterial, which has made significant progress in the long-term prevention and treatment of oral diseases. In this review, we have summarized the applications of metal and their oxides, organic and composite nanomaterials in oral field in recent five years. These nanomaterials can not only inactivate oral bacteria, but also achieve more efficient treatment and prevention of oral diseases by improving the properties of the materials themselves, enhancing the precision of targeted delivery of drugs and imparting richer functions. Finally, future challenges and untapped potential are elaborated to demonstrate the future prospects of antibacterial nanomaterials in oral field.

Self-healing, antibacterial, and conductive double network hydrogel for strain sensors

Multifunctional hydrogels have great potential in smart wearable technology, flexible electronic devices, and biomedical research. However, it is highly challenging to prepare unique conductive hydrogels with combined properties such as self-healing, self-adhesive, and antibacterial activity. In this regard, herein, a conductive double network hydrogel (ACBt-PAA/CMCs) was fabricated using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs), acrylic acid (AA), and alkaline calcium bentonite (ACBt) via a convenient approach. Owing to the hydrogen bond interaction between PAA and CMCs, the ACBt-PAA/CMCs double network structured hydrogels exhibited excellent self-healing (the tensile strength recovered to 74.3 % after 1 h) and adjustable mechanical properties, in which the fracture stress and strain can be easily adjusted in the range of 0.039 to 0.93 MPa and 564 to 2900 %, respectively. In addition, the ACBt-PAA/CMCs hydrogels exhibited the remarkable antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (bacterial inhibition efficiency of ~99.99 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (bacterial inhibition efficiency of ~99.98 %). Furthermore, the ACBt-PAA/CMCs hydrogel based wearable skin exhibited an excellent real-time sensing performance for monitoring various motions, signifying outstanding sensing and self-adhesion properties. Considering the unique features such as self-healing, excellent adhesion, highly active strain sensing, and antibacterial activities making the ACBt-PAA/CMCs hydrogel is an excellent multifunctional conductive hydrogel. Hence, we believe that this proposed design method for the fabrication of smart and multifunctional conductive hydrogels, and this ACBt-PAA/CMCs hydrogel could be a promising candidate for flexible wearable materials, health monitoring, and beyond.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2019-2020

This review is the tenth update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2020. Also included are papers that describe methods appropriate to analysis by MALDI, such as sample preparation techniques, even though the ionization method is not MALDI. The review is basically divided into three sections: (1) general aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, fragmentation, quantification and the use of arrays. (2) Applications to various structural types such as oligo- and polysaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides and biopharmaceuticals, and (3) other areas such as medicine, industrial processes and glycan synthesis where MALDI is extensively used. Much of the material relating to applications is presented in tabular form. The reported work shows increasing use of incorporation of new techniques such as ion mobility and the enormous impact that MALDI imaging is having. MALDI, although invented nearly 40 years ago is still an ideal technique for carbohydrate analysis and advancements in the technique and range of applications show little sign of diminishing.

Chitosan and its application in dental implantology

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this review was to evaluate the properties of chitosan for an application in dental implantology.

METHODS

Electronic Databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, were used to recherche the articles published from 2010 to 2021. The keywords used were: chitosan, biocompatible, antibacterial, osseointegration, implant, bioactive. After a carefully selection according to the above keywords 46 articles met the condition to be studied RESULTS: Chitosan is a biopolymer, that can be easy produced. Its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fugal, hemostatic, analgesic, mucoadhesive, osseointegrative properties and its excellent film-forming ability make chitosan a material with a future in dental implantology and in other areas of dental applications. Titan implants coated with chitosan showed better bioactive properties than uncoated implants. The treatment of the implant surface played an important role on the stability of implants. The activity of osteoblasts increased when the surface was laser-treated followed by coating with chitosan. The subsequent coating with apatite improved the bioactivity of chitosan.

CONCLUSION

Chitosan is a promising biocompatible and bioactive material in dental implantology. Its antibacterial properties can be enhanced by modification of its structure. Its bioactive properties can be improved when mixing with hydroxy apatite.

The Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Effects of Silver Nanoparticles Coated Titanium Implants: A Narrative Review

Nanotechnology has become an emerging research field with numerous biomedical scientific applications. Silver possesses bactericidal activities that have been harnessed for centuries; however, there is a concern about the toxic effects of silver nanoparticles. This paper aims to provide an overview of silver-treated dental implants and discuss their potential to reduce the prevalence of peri-implant diseases. An electronic search was performed using PubMed. After screening, data extraction was performed on the 45 remaining articles using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most of the articles demonstrated that silver nanoparticles embedded in a coating layer and/or on surface-treated titanium exhibit sound antibacterial effects and biocompatibility. Most of the reviewed studies revealed that silver nanoparticles on dental implant surfaces reduced cytotoxicity but provided a prolonged antibacterial effect. The cytotoxicity and antibacterial effect are closely linked to how the silver nanoparticles are released from the titanium surfaces, where a slower release increases cell viability and proliferation. However, to improve the clinical translation, there is still a need for more studies, especially evaluating the long-term systemic effects and studies recreating the conditions in the oral cavity.

Antimicrobial coating strategy to prevent orthopaedic device-related infections: recent advances and future perspectives

The rapid development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and biofilm-related infections (BRIs) has urgently called for new strategies to combat severe orthopaedic device-related infections (ODRIs). Antimicrobial coating has emerged as a promising strategy in halting the incidence of ODRIs and treating ODRIs in long term. With the advancement of material science and biotechnology, numerous antimicrobial coatings have been reported in literature, showing superior antimicrobial and osteogenic functions. This review has specifically discussed the currently developed antimicrobial coatings in the perspective of drug release from the coating system, focusing on their realization of controlled and on demand antimicrobial agents release, as well as multi-functionality. Acknowledging the multidisciplinary nature of antimicrobial coating, the conceptual design, the deposition method and the therapeutic effect of the antimicrobial coatings have been described in detail and discussed critically. Particularly, the challenges and opportunities on the way toward the clinical translation of antimicrobial coatings have been highlighted.

Mucoadhesive silver nanoparticle-based local drug delivery system for peri-implantitis management in COVID-19 era. Part 1: antimicrobial and safety in-vitro analysis

BACKGROUND

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major respiratory pathogen, has been isolated from peri-implant sites and is associated with dental implant failure. This in-vitro study (part 1) aimed to fabricate a novel mucoadhesive silver nanoparticle-based local drug delivery chip, evaluate its antimicrobial efficacy against P. aeruginosa, and its safety for the treatment of peri-implantitis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The local drug delivery chip was fabricated using gelatin, glycerol, silver nanoparticle solution (2.5 μg/ml, 5 μg/ml, 7.5 μg/ml, and 10 μg/ml), glutaraldehyde, and sodium alginate solution. These chips were evaluated for physical parameters, effect on viability of murine macrophage cell line J774A.1, and antimicrobial activity (using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method with 18 h incubation period) against P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853.

RESULTS

Silver nanoparticle antimicrobial chip exhibited dimensions of 4 mm × 5 mm x 0.4 mm, 5.8 mg weight, pH 5-6, folding endurance 1.04, and one-year stability. P. aeruginosa was susceptible to ≥ 7.5 μg/ml concentration of silver nanoparticles (spherical shape with particle size ranging from 10 to 100 nm). Murine macrophage cells exhibited 93% viability after 24 h incubation with silver nanoparticle chips.

CONCLUSION

The novel silver nanoparticle chip showed dimensional stability, minimal effect on murine macrophage cell viability, and significant antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa. With the further establishment of its effective dosage and safety, this chip could be used as an adjunct to mechanical debridement (as a non-aerosol generating procedure) in treating peri-implantitis, especially during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In Vivo Antibacterial Efficacy of Nanopatterns on Titanium Implant Surface: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Background: Bionic surface nanopatterns of titanium (Ti) materials have excellent antibacterial effects in vitro for infection prevention. To date, there is a lack of knowledge about the in vivo bactericidal outcomes of the nanostructures on the Ti implant surfaces. Methods: A systematic review was performed using the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases to better understand surface nanoscale patterns’ in vivo antibacterial efficacy. The inclusion criteria were preclinical studies (in vivo) reporting the antibacterial activity of nanopatterns on Ti implant surface. Ex vivo studies, studies not evaluating the antibacterial activity of nanopatterns or surfaces not modified with nanopatterns were excluded. Results: A total of five peer-reviewed articles met the inclusion criteria. The included studies suggest that the in vivo antibacterial efficacy of the nanopatterns on Ti implants’ surfaces seems poor. Conclusions: Given the small number of literature results, the variability in experimental designs, and the lack of reporting across studies, concluding the in vivo antibacterial effectiveness of nanopatterns on Ti substrates’ surfaces remains a big challenge. Surface coatings using metallic or antibiotic elements are still practical approaches for this purpose. High-quality preclinical data are still needed to investigate the in vivo antibacterial effects of the nanopatterns on the implant surface.

Clindamycin-loaded titanium prevents implant-related infection through blocking biofilm formation

Implant-related infection is a disastrous complication. Surface modification of titanium is considered as an important strategy to prevent implant-related infection. However, there is no recognized surface modification strategy that can be applied in clinic so far. We explored a new strategy of coating. The clindamycin-loaded titanium was constructed by layer-by-layer self-assembly. The release of clindamycin from titanium was detected through high performance liquid chromatography. Different titanium was co-cultured with Staphylococcus aureus for 24 h in vitro, then the effect of different titanium on bacterial colonization and biofilm formation was determined by spread plate method and scanning electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity and cytocompatibility of clindamycin-loaded titanium on MC3T3-E1 cells were measured by CCK8. The antibacterial ability of clindamycin-loaded titanium in vivo was also evaluated using a rat model of osteomyelitis. The number of osteoclasts in bone defect was observed by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining. Bacterial burden of surrounding tissues around the site of infection was calculated by tissue homogenate and colony count. Clindamycin-loaded titanium could release clindamycin slowly within 160 h. It reduced bacterial colonization by three orders of magnitude compare to control (p < .05) and inhibits biofilm formation in vitro. Cells proliferation and adhesion were similar on three titanium surfaces (p > .05). In vivo, clindamycin-loaded titanium improved bone healing, reduced microbial burden, and decreased the number of osteoclasts compared control titanium in the rat model of osteomyelitis. This study demonstrated that clindamycin-loaded titanium exhibited good biocompatibility, and showed antibacterial activity both in vivo and in vitro. It is promising and might have potential for clinical application.

Study of Titanium-Silver Monolayer and Multilayer Films for Protective Applications in Biomedical Devices

The search for coatings that extend the useful life of biomedical devices has been of great interest, and titanium has been of great relevance due to its innocuousness and low reactivity. This study contributes to the investigation of Ti/Ag films in different configurations (monolayer and multilayer) deposited by magnetron sputtering. The sessile droplet technique was applied to study wettability; greater film penetrability was obtained when Ag is the external layer, conferring high efficiency in cell adhesion. The morphological properties were characterized by SEM, which showed porous nuclei on the surface in the Ag coating and crystals embedded in the Ti film. The structural properties were studied by XRD, revealing the presence of TiO2 in the anatase crystalline phase in a proportion of 49.9% and the formation of a silver cubic network centered on the faces. Tafel polarization curves demonstrated improvements in the corrosion current densities of Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti and Ti/Ag compared to the Ag coating, with values of 0.1749, 0.4802, and 2.044 nA.m-2, respectively. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis and the yeasts Candida krusei and Candida albicans, revealing that the Ti/Ag and Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti/Ag/Ti coatings exhibit promise in biomedical material applications.

Nanoparticles in Dentistry: A Comprehensive Review

In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been receiving more attention in dentistry. Their advantageous physicochemical and biological properties can improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, pulp and periapical lesions, oral candidiasis, denture stomatitis, hyposalivation, and head, neck, and oral cancer. NPs can also enhance the mechanical and microbiological properties of dental prostheses and implants and can be used to improve drug delivery through the oral mucosa. This paper reviewed studies from 2015 to 2020 and summarized the potential applications of different types of NPs in the many fields of dentistry.

Mussel Adhesive Mimetic Silk Sericin Prepared by Enzymatic Oxidation for the Construction of Antibacterial Coatings

With the rapid development and advancement in orthodontic and orthopedic technologies, the demand for biomedical-grade titanium (Ti) alloys is growing. The Ti-based implants are susceptible to bacterial infections, leading to poor healing and osteointegration, resulting in implant failure or repeated surgical intervention. Silk sericin (SS) is hydrophilic, biocompatible, and biodegradable and could induce a low immunological response in vivo. As a result, it would be intriguing to investigate the use of hydrophilic SS in surface modification. In this work, the tyrosine moiety in SS was oxidized by tyrosinase (or polyphenol oxidase) to the 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) form, generating the catechol moiety-containing SS (SSC). Inspired by the adhesion of mussel foot proteins, the SSC coatings could be directly deposited onto multiple surfaces in SS and tyrosinase mixed stock solutions to create active surfaces with catechol groups. Further, the SSC-coated Ti surfaces were hybridized with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via in situ silver ion (Ag⁺) reduction. The antibacterial properties of the Ag NPs/SS-coated Ti surfaces are demonstrated, and they can prevent bacterial cell adhesion as well as early-stage biofilm formation. In addition, the developed Ag NPs/SSC-coated Ti surfaces exhibited a negligible level of cytotoxicity in L929 mouse fibroblast cells.

Antibacterial catechol-based hyaluronic acid, chitosan and poly (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) coatings onto Ti6Al4V surfaces for application as biomedical implant

Bacterial contamination in implanted biomedical devices is a critical daily concern. The most used material for permanent implant in biomedical field is Ti6Al4V alloy due to its beneficial mechanical properties and high biocompatibility. Accordingly, in this work different polymeric antibacterial coatings poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan (CHI) were developed and comparatively analysed for Ti6Al4V surface covering. The adhesion of these coatings to Ti6Al4V substrates were carried out after the conjugation of these polymers with the so well-known bioadhesive properties of catechol (CA) anchor group. These surface modifications were characterized by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy. In addition, the stability of CA-conjugated polymeric coatings was compared with the coatings formed with unconjugated polymers. Finally, the cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties against gram-positive and gram-negative strains on coated Ti6Al4V substrates were assessed confirming the effectiveness of these polymeric coatings against bacterial infections for future applications in protecting biomedical implants.

UV-Assisted Deposition of Antibacterial Ag-Tannic Acid Nanocomposite Coating

The marked increase in bacterial colonization of medical devices and multiple drug resistance to traditional antibiotics underline the pressing need for developing novel antibacterial surface coatings. In the present investigation, natural polyphenol tannic acid (TA)-capped silver nanoparticles (TA-Ag NPs) were synthesized via an environmentally friendly and sustainable one-step redox reaction under UV irradiation with a simultaneous and uniform deposition on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and other substrate surfaces. In the synthesis process, the dihydroxyphenyl and trihydroxyphenyl groups of TA actively participate in Ag⁺ reduction, forming co-ordination linkages with Ag NPs and bestowing the deposition on the PDMS surface. The physico-chemical features of TA-Ag NPs were characterized in detail. Microscopic examination, surface elemental analysis, and wettability measurements clearly reveal the decoration of TA-Ag NPs on the substrate surfaces. The modified PDMS surfaces can kill the adhered bacteria or resist the bacterial adhesion, and no live bacteria can be found on their surfaces. Most importantly, the modified PDMS surfaces exhibit predominant antibacterial effects both in vitro in the catheter bridge model and in vivo in a rat subcutaneous infection model. On the other hand, the functionalized surfaces exhibit only a negligible level of cytotoxicity against L929 mouse fibroblasts with no side effects on the major organs of Sprague-Dawley rats after implantation, indicating their biocompatibility for potential biomedical applications.

Catechol-Based Antimicrobial Polymers

Catechol is a key constituent in mussel adhesive proteins and is responsible for strong adhesive property and crosslinking formation. Plant-based polyphenols are also capable of chemical interactions similar to those of catechol and are inherently antimicrobial. This review reports a series of catechol-based antimicrobial polymers classified according to their antimicrobial mechanisms. Catechol is utilized as a surface anchoring group for adhering monomers and polymers of known antimicrobial properties onto various types of surfaces. Additionally, catechol's ability to form strong complexes with metal ions and nanoparticles was utilized to sequester these antimicrobial agents into coatings and polymer matrices. During catechol oxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) is generated as a byproduct, and the use of the generated ROS for antimicrobial applications was also introduced. Finally, polymers that utilized the innate antimicrobial property of halogenated catechols and polyphenols were reviewed.

Recently Emerging Nanotechnological Advancements in Polymer Nanocomposite Coatings for Anti-corrosion, Anti-fouling and Self-healing

Recent nanotechnological advancements have enabled novel innovations in protective polymer nanocomposites (PNC) coatings for anti-corrosion, anti-fouling and self-healing services on material surfaces. Nanotechnology encompases research, manufacturing, and application of nanoparticulate architectures, tubular structures, sheets or plates exhibiting sizes below 100 nanometers (nm) in at least a single dimension. Inclusions of nanoparticles into organic entities have demonstrated enhanced properties essential for attainiment of aesthetics, anti-corrosion, thermal stability for high-temperature performances, mechanical strength essential for resisting coating deterioration in harsh environments, nano-architectural cross-linking capable of hindering penetration of corrosive, and biofouling entities. Unlike previously published literature, this paper elucidates very recently emerging important advancements in novel techniques utilized in developing PNC coatings for applications in aerospace, packaging, automotive, biomedicine, maritime, and oil and gas industries for attaining superior anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and self-healing behaviors on critical material surfaces. Emerging market structures and novel applications are also presented.

Amino-containing tannic acid derivative-mediated universal coatings for multifunctional surface modification

The development of a universal coating strategy for the construction of functional surfaces and modulation of surface properties is of great research interest. Tannic acid (TA) could serve as a sole precursor for the deposition of colorless coatings on substrate surfaces. However, the deposition of TA requires a high salt concentration (0.6 M), which may limit its practical application. Herein, primary amine moieties were introduced on the gallic acid groups in TA. The resultant amine-containing TA derivative (TAA) can self-polymerize under mild conditions (10 mM, Tris buffer), and form uniform and colorless coatings in a material-independent manner. In comparison with the TA coating under the same preparation conditions, the TAA coating exhibits an increased thickness as measured by ellipsometry. The TAA coating is adapted for secondary surface functionalization. The hydrophilic mPEG brushes can be grafted on the TAA coating to inhibit non-specific protein adsorption. A biotin probe can be immobilized on the TAA coating to promote specific binding with avidin. In addition, the TAA coating can be utilized for in situ reduction of silver ions to AgNPs. The resulting AgNP-loaded TAA coating can inhibit bacterial adhesion and prevent biofilm formation.

Nano-Modified Titanium Implant Materials: A Way Toward Improved Antibacterial Properties

Titanium and its alloys have superb biocompatibility, low elastic modulus, and favorable corrosion resistance. These exceptional properties lead to its wide use as a medical implant material. Titanium itself does not have antibacterial properties, so bacteria can gather and adhere to its surface resulting in infection issues. The infection is among the main reasons for implant failure in orthopedic surgeries. Nano-modification, as one of the good options, has the potential to induce different degrees of antibacterial effect on the surface of implant materials. At the same time, the nano-modification procedure and the produced nanostructures should not adversely affect the osteogenic activity, and it should simultaneously lead to favorable antibacterial properties on the surface of the implant. This article scrutinizes and deals with the surface nano-modification of titanium implant materials from three aspects: nanostructures formation procedures, nanomaterials loading, and nano-morphology. In this regard, the research progress on the antibacterial properties of various surface nano-modification of titanium implant materials and the related procedures are introduced, and the new trends will be discussed in order to improve the related materials and methods.

An Updated Review on Silver Nanoparticles in Biomedicine

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) represent one of the most explored categories of nanomaterials for new and improved biomaterials and biotechnologies, with impressive use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, anti-infective therapy and wound care, food and the textile industry. Their extensive and versatile applicability relies on the genuine and easy-tunable properties of nanosilver, including remarkable physicochemical behavior, exceptional antimicrobial efficiency, anti-inflammatory action and antitumor activity. Besides commercially available and clinically safe AgNPs-based products, a substantial number of recent studies assessed the applicability of nanosilver as therapeutic agents in augmented and alternative strategies for cancer therapy, sensing and diagnosis platforms, restorative and regenerative biomaterials. Given the beneficial interactions of AgNPs with living structures and their nontoxic effects on healthy human cells, they represent an accurate candidate for various biomedical products. In the present review, the most important and recent applications of AgNPs in biomedical products and biomedicine are considered.

Enhancing Antibacterial Performance and Biocompatibility of Pure Titanium by a Two-Step Electrochemical Surface Coating

A two-step electrochemical surface treatment has been developed to modify the CP Ti surface on commercially pure titanium grade 2 (CP Ti): (1) anodic oxidation to form TiO₂ nanotube precoatings loaded with silver (Ag) and (2) microarc oxidation (MAO) to produce a porous Ca-P-Ag coating in an electrolyte containing Ag, Ca, and P. One-step MAO in the same electrolyte has also been used to produce porous Ca-P-Ag coatings without anodic oxidation and preloaded Ag as a control. Surface morphologies and alloying chemistry of the two coatings were characterized by SEM, EDS, and XPS. Biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties have been evaluated by the MTT method and co-culture of Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. It is demonstrated that porous coatings with high Ag content can be achieved on the CP Ti by the two-step treatment. The optimized MAO voltage for excellent comprehensive properties of the coating is 350 V, in which a suitable chemical equilibrium between Ag, Ca, and P contents and a Ca/P ratio of 1.67 similar to HA can be obtained, and the Ag particles are in the size of less than 100 nm and embedded into the underneath of the coating surface. After being contacted with S. aureus for 1 and 7 days, the average bactericidal rates were 99.53 and 89.27% and no cytotoxicity was detected. In comparison, the one-step MAO coatings contained less Ag, had a lower Ca/P ratio, and showed lower antimicrobial ability than the two-step treated samples.

Influence of chemical composition on cell viability on titanium surfaces: A systematic review

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

A consensus on which dental implant alloy and surface treatment provide the best cell viability is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this systematic review was to provide information on the influence of surface and intrinsic titanium alloy chemical components on cell viability.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The PubMed, LILACS, COCHRANE library, and Science Direct databases were electronically searched for the terms dental implants AND titanium AND cytotoxicity. Inclusion criteria were research articles that studied titanium or its alloys for chemical composition and cell viability and were published in English between 1999 and 2019. Articles that did not study titanium and its alloys, articles with nondental or biomedical implants, and articles that were not found in their entirety were excluded.

RESULTS

A total of 1226 articles selected by title or abstract according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in 51 articles that were reduced to 27 after reading in full. The treatments analyzed were arc fusion, electron beam physical deposition, plasma electrolytic oxidation, coating addition, micro arc oxidation, anodization, thermochemical process, BMP-2 immobilization, pressure-assisted sintering, and alkali heat treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

The evaluated literature did not allow a determination of the best surface treatment for cell viability because of the heterogeneity of the studies regarding the type of alloy, cell used in the MTT assay, study, and implant purpose (biomedical or dental). The cytotoxic effect of chemical components was dependent on dose, time, size, temperature, and cell type. The niobium, tantalum, zirconium, and molybdenum elements have been most often added in the development of less toxic Ti alloys with lower modulus of elasticity and increased strength.

Iodoform and silver-coated abutments preventing bacterial leakage through the implant-abutment interfaces: In vitro analysis using molecular-based method

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an iodoform paste and silver-coated abutments in preventing the microbial colonization and leakage through the implant-abutment interface of morse taper and internal hexagon implants.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Seventy-two implants with morse taper (n = 36) or internal hexagon connections (n = 36) were investigated. Implants were treated with iodoform paste (n = 12), silver-coated abutments (n = 12), or control (n = 12). After saliva incubation, Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization was used to identify and quantify up to 43 microbial species colonizing the inner parts of the implants. ANOVA-Type and Wald-Type analyses of variance were used to investigate the relative effects and their interaction. Friedman- Conover test adjusted by Benjamini-Hockberg FDR were performed for pairwise multiple comparisons. Significance was set as p < 0.05.

RESULTS

Analyses of variance indicate a significant interaction between connections, antimicrobial treatments, and species. The frequency of contamination was reduced in the implants submitted to the antimicrobial treatments. Iodoform and silver-coated abutments significantly reduced the total microbial counts in the internal hexagon implants. The lower microbial counts were recorded for morse taper implants with silver-coated abutments.

CONCLUSIONS

Iodoform paste and silver-coated abutments have influenced the microbial leakage through the implant-abutment interface, by reducing both frequency of contamination and microbial levels. Treatments were not effective in reducing the counts of the target species.

Microbial Corrosion Resistance and Antibacterial Property of Electrodeposited Zn-Ni-Chitosan Coatings

Microbial corrosion is a universal phenomenon in salt water media such as seawater and wastewater environments. As a kind of efficient protective metal coating for steel, the damage of the Zn-Ni alloy coating was found to be accelerated under microbial corrosive conditions. To solve this problem, chitosan, which is considered a natural product with high antibacterial efficiency, was added to Zn-Ni electrolytes as a functional ingredient of electrodeposited Zn-Ni-chitosan coatings. It was found that the addition of chitosan significantly and negatively shifted the electrodeposition potentials and influenced the Ni contents, the phase composition, and the surface morphologies. By exposing the coatings in a sulfate-reducing bacteria medium, the microbial corrosion resistance was investigated. The results showed that compared to the Zn-Ni alloy coating, Zn-Ni-chitosan coatings showed obvious inhibiting effects on sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and the corrosion rates of these coatings were mitigated to some degree. Further research on the coatings immersed in an Escherichia coli-suspended phosphate buffer saline medium showed that the bacteria attachment on the coating surface was effectively reduced, which indicated enhanced antibacterial properties. As a result, the Zn-Ni-chitosan coatings showed remarkably enhanced anticorrosive and antibacterial properties.
