Human brain imaging with high-density electroencephalography: Techniques and applications

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique for non-invasively measuring neuronal activity in the human brain using electrodes placed on the participant's scalp. With the advancement of digital technologies, EEG analysis has evolved over time from the qualitative analysis of amplitude and frequency modulations to a comprehensive analysis of the complex spatiotemporal characteristics of the recorded signals. EEG is now considered a powerful tool for measuring neural processes in the same time frame in which they happen (i.e. the subsecond range). However, it is commonly argued that EEG suffers from low spatial resolution, which makes it difficult to localize the generators of EEG activity accurately and reliably. Today, the availability of high-density EEG (hdEEG) systems, combined with methods for incorporating information on head anatomy and sophisticated source-localization algorithms, has transformed EEG into an important neuroimaging tool. hdEEG offers researchers and clinicians a rich and varied range of applications. It can be used not only for investigating neural correlates in motor and cognitive neuroscience experiments, but also for clinical diagnosis, particularly in the detection of epilepsy and the characterization of neural impairments in a wide range of neurological disorders. Notably, the integration of hdEEG systems with other physiological recordings, such as kinematic and/or electromyography data, might be especially beneficial to better understand the neuromuscular mechanisms associated with deconditioning in ageing and neuromotor disorders, by mapping the neurokinematic and neuromuscular connectivity patterns directly in the brain.

Exploring the frontier: Transformer-based models in EEG signal analysis for brain-computer interfaces

This review systematically explores the application of transformer-based models in EEG signal processing and brain-computer interface (BCI) development, with a distinct focus on ensuring methodological rigour and adhering to empirical validations within the existing literature. By examining various transformer architectures, such as the Temporal Spatial Transformer Network (TSTN) and EEG Conformer, this review delineates their capabilities in mitigating challenges intrinsic to EEG data, such as noise and artifacts, and their subsequent implications on decoding and classification accuracies across disparate mental tasks. The analytical scope extends to a meticulous examination of attention mechanisms within transformer models, delineating their role in illuminating critical temporal and spatial EEG features and facilitating interpretability in model decision-making processes. The discourse additionally encapsulates emerging works that substantiate the efficacy of transformer models in noise reduction of EEG signals and diversifying applications beyond the conventional motor imagery paradigm. Furthermore, this review elucidates evident gaps and propounds exploratory avenues in the applications of pre-trained transformers in EEG analysis and the potential expansion into real-time and multi-task BCI applications. Collectively, this review distils extant knowledge, navigates through the empirical findings, and puts forward a structured synthesis, thereby serving as a conduit for informed future research endeavours in transformer-enhanced, EEG-based BCI systems.

Detection of Unfocused EEG Epochs by the Application of Machine Learning Algorithm

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive method used to track human brain activity over time. The time-locked EEG to an external event is known as event-related potential (ERP). ERP can be a biomarker of human perception and other cognitive processes. The success of ERP research depends on the laboratory conditions and attentiveness of the test subjects. Specifically, the inability to control experimental variables has reduced ERP research in the real world. This study collected EEG data under various experimental circumstances within an auditory oddball paradigm experiment to enable the use of ERP as an active biomarker in normal laboratory conditions. Then, ERP epochs were analyzed to identify unfocused epochs, affected by typical artifacts and external distortion. For the initial comparison, the ability of four unsupervised machine learning algorithms (MLAs) was evaluated to identify unfocused epochs. Then, their accuracy was compared with the human inspection and a current EEG analysis tool (EEGLab). All four MLAs were typically 95-100% accurate. In summary, our analysis finds that humans might miss subtle differences in the regular ERP patterns, but MLAs could efficiently identify those. Thus, our analysis suggests that unsupervised MLAs perform better for detecting unfocused ERP epochs compared with the other two standard methods.

Multi-Scale Feature and Multi-Channel Selection toward Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis with EEG

OBJECTIVE

Motivated by Health Care 4.0, this study aims to reducing the dimensionality of traditional EEG features based on manual extracted features, including statistical features in the time and frequency domains.

METHODS

A total of 22 multi-scale features were extracted from the UNM and Iowa datasets using a 4th order Butterworth filter and wavelet packet transform. Based on single-channel validation, 29 channels with the highest R2 scores were selected from a pool of 59 common channels. The proposed channel selection scheme was validated on the UNM dataset and tested on the Iowa dataset to compare its generalizability against models trained without channel selection.

RESULTS

The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves an optimal classification accuracy of 100%. Additionally, the generalization capability of the channel selection method is validated through out-of-sample testing based on the Iowa dataset Conclusions: Using single-channel validation, we proposed a channel selection scheme based on traditional statistical features, resulting in a selection of 29 channels. This scheme significantly reduced the dimensionality of EEG feature vectors related to Parkinson's disease by 50%. Remarkably, this approach demonstrated considerable classification performance on both the UNM and Iowa datasets. For the closed-eye state, the highest classification accuracy achieved was 100%, while for the open-eye state, the highest accuracy reached 93.75%.

Evaluating the effectiveness of artifact correction and rejection in event-related potential research

Eyeblinks and other large artifacts can create two major problems in event-related potential (ERP) research, namely confounds and increased noise. Here, we developed a method for assessing the effectiveness of artifact correction and rejection methods in minimizing these two problems. We then used this method to assess a common artifact minimization approach, in which independent component analysis (ICA) is used to correct ocular artifacts, and artifact rejection is used to reject trials with extreme values resulting from other sources (e.g., movement artifacts). This approach was applied to data from five common ERP components (P3b, N400, N170, mismatch negativity, and error-related negativity). Four common scoring methods (mean amplitude, peak amplitude, peak latency, and 50% area latency) were examined for each component. We found that eyeblinks differed systematically across experimental conditions for several of the components. We also found that artifact correction was reasonably effective at minimizing these confounds, although it did not usually eliminate them completely. In addition, we found that the rejection of trials with extreme voltage values was effective at reducing noise, with the benefits of eliminating these trials outweighing the reduced number of trials available for averaging. For researchers who are analyzing similar ERP components and participant populations, this combination of artifact correction and rejection approaches should minimize artifact-related confounds and lead to improved data quality. Researchers who are analyzing other components or participant populations can use the method developed in this study to determine which artifact minimization approaches are effective in their data.

fNIRS is capable of distinguishing laterality of lower body contractions

The use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for brain imaging during human movement continues to increase. This technology measures brain activity non-invasively using near-infrared light, is highly portable, and robust to motion artifact. However, the spatial resolution of fNIRS is lower than that of other imaging modalities. It is unclear whether fNIRS has sufficient spatial resolution to differentiate nearby areas of the cortex, such as the leg areas of the motor cortex. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine fNIRS' ability to discern laterality of lower body contractions. Activity in the primary motor cortex was recorded in forty participants (mean = 23.4 years, SD = 4.5, female = 23, male = 17) while performing unilateral lower body contractions. Contractions were performed at 30% of maximal force against a handheld dynamometer. These contractions included knee extension, knee flexion, dorsiflexion, and plantar flexion of the left and right legs. fNIRS signals were recorded and stored for offline processing and analysis. Channels of fNIRS data were grouped into regions of interest, with five tolerance conditions ranging from strict to lenient. Four of five tolerance conditions resulted in significant differences in cortical activation between hemispheres. During right leg contractions, the left hemisphere was more active than the right hemisphere. Similarly, during left leg contractions, the right hemisphere was more active than the left hemisphere. These results suggest that fNIRS has sufficient spatial resolution to distinguish laterality of lower body contractions. This makes fNIRS an attractive technology in research and clinical applications in which laterality of brain activity is required during lower body activity.

Remote Wearable Neuroimaging Devices for Health Monitoring and Neurophenotyping: A Scoping Review

Digital health tracking is a source of valuable insights for public health research and consumer health technology. The brain is the most complex organ, containing information about psychophysical and physiological biomarkers that correlate with health. Specifically, recent developments in electroencephalogram (EEG), functional near-infra-red spectroscopy (fNIRS), and photoplethysmography (PPG) technologies have allowed the development of devices that can remotely monitor changes in brain activity. The inclusion criteria for the papers in this review encompassed studies on self-applied, remote, non-invasive neuroimaging techniques (EEG, fNIRS, or PPG) within healthcare applications. A total of 23 papers were reviewed, comprising 17 on using EEGs for remote monitoring and 6 on neurofeedback interventions, while no papers were found related to fNIRS and PPG. This review reveals that previous studies have leveraged mobile EEG devices for remote monitoring across the mental health, neurological, and sleep domains, as well as for delivering neurofeedback interventions. With headsets and ear-EEG devices being the most common, studies found mobile devices feasible for implementation in study protocols while providing reliable signal quality. Moderate to substantial agreement overall between remote and clinical-grade EEGs was found using statistical tests. The results highlight the promise of portable brain-imaging devices with regard to continuously evaluating patients in natural settings, though further validation and usability enhancements are needed as this technology develops.

Orthogonal extended infomax algorithm

Objective.The extended infomax algorithm for independent component analysis (ICA) can separate sub- and super-Gaussian signals but converges slowly as it uses stochastic gradient optimization. In this paper, an improved extended infomax algorithm is presented that converges much faster.Approach.Accelerated convergence is achieved by replacing the natural gradient learning rule of extended infomax by a fully-multiplicative orthogonal-group based update scheme of the ICA unmixing matrix, leading to an orthogonal extended infomax algorithm (OgExtInf). The computational performance of OgExtInf was compared with original extended infomax and with two fast ICA algorithms: the popular FastICA and Picard, a preconditioned limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (L-BFGS) algorithm belonging to the family of quasi-Newton methods.Main results.OgExtInf converges much faster than original extended infomax. For small-size electroencephalogram (EEG) data segments, as used for example in online EEG processing, OgExtInf is also faster than FastICA and Picard.Significance.OgExtInf may be useful for fast and reliable ICA, e.g. in online systems for epileptic spike and seizure detection or brain-computer interfaces.

A scoping review on the use of consumer-grade EEG devices for research

BACKGROUND

Commercial electroencephalography (EEG) devices have become increasingly available over the last decade. These devices have been used in a wide variety of fields ranging from engineering to cognitive neuroscience.

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to chart peer-review articles that used consumer-grade EEG devices to collect neural data. We provide an overview of the research conducted with these relatively more affordable and user-friendly devices. We also inform future research by exploring the current and potential scope of consumer-grade EEG.

METHODS

We followed a five-stage methodological framework for a scoping review that included a systematic search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. We searched the following online databases: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore. We charted study data according to application (BCI, experimental research, validation, signal processing, and clinical) and location of use as indexed by the first author's country.

RESULTS

We identified 916 studies that used data recorded with consumer-grade EEG: 531 were reported in journal articles and 385 in conference papers. Emotiv devices were used most, followed by the NeuroSky MindWave, OpenBCI, interaXon Muse, and MyndPlay Mindband. The most common usage was for brain-computer interfaces, followed by experimental research, signal processing, validation, and clinical purposes.

CONCLUSIONS

Consumer-grade EEG is a useful tool for neuroscientific research and will likely continue to be used well into the future. Our study provides a comprehensive review of their application, as well as future directions for researchers who plan to use these devices.

Research on Ocular Artifacts Removal from Single-Channel Electroencephalogram Signals in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients Based on Support Vector Machine, Improved Variational Mode Decomposition, and Second-Order Blind Identification

The electroencephalogram (EEG) has recently emerged as a pivotal tool in brain imaging analysis, playing a crucial role in accurately interpreting brain functions and states. To address the problem that the presence of ocular artifacts in the EEG signals of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) severely affects the accuracy of sleep staging recognition, we propose a method that integrates a support vector machine (SVM) with genetic algorithm (GA)-optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and second-order blind identification (SOBI) for the removal of ocular artifacts from single-channel EEG signals. The SVM is utilized to identify artifact-contaminated segments within preprocessed single-channel EEG signals. Subsequently, these signals are decomposed into variational modal components across different frequency bands using the GA-optimized VMD algorithm. These components undergo further decomposition via the SOBI algorithm, followed by the computation of their approximate entropy. An approximate entropy threshold is set to identify and remove components laden with ocular artifacts. Finally, the signal is reconstructed using the inverse SOBI and VMD algorithms. To validate the efficacy of our proposed method, we conducted experiments utilizing both simulated data and real OSAS sleep EEG data. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm not only effectively mitigates the presence of ocular artifacts but also minimizes EEG signal distortion, thereby enhancing the precision of sleep staging recognition based on the EEG signals of OSAS patients.

Minimizing artifact-induced false-alarms for seizure detection in wearable EEG devices with gradient-boosted tree classifiers

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used to monitor epileptic seizures, and standard clinical practice consists of monitoring patients in dedicated epilepsy monitoring units via video surveillance and cumbersome EEG caps. Such a setting is not compatible with long-term tracking under typical living conditions, thereby motivating the development of unobtrusive wearable solutions. However, wearable EEG devices present the challenges of fewer channels, restricted computational capabilities, and lower signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, artifacts presenting morphological similarities to seizures act as major noise sources and can be misinterpreted as seizures. This paper presents a combined seizure and artifacts detection framework targeting wearable EEG devices based on Gradient Boosted Trees. The seizure detector achieves nearly zero false alarms with average sensitivity values of [Formula: see text] for 182 seizures from the CHB-MIT dataset and [Formula: see text] for 25 seizures from the private dataset with no preliminary artifact detection or removal. The artifact detector achieves a state-of-the-art accuracy of [Formula: see text] (on the TUH-EEG Artifact Corpus dataset). Integrating artifact and seizure detection significantly reduces false alarms-up to [Formula: see text] compared to standalone seizure detection. Optimized for a Parallel Ultra-Low Power platform, these algorithms enable extended monitoring with a battery lifespan reaching 300 h. These findings highlight the benefits of integrating artifact detection in wearable epilepsy monitoring devices to limit the number of false positives.

Reliable and fast automatic artifact rejection of Long-Term EEG recordings based on Isolation Forest

Long-term electroencephalogram (Long-Term EEG) has the capacity to monitor over a long period, making it a valuable tool in medical institutions. However, due to the large volume of patient data, selecting clean data segments from raw Long-Term EEG for further analysis is an extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive task. Furthermore, the various actions of patients during recording make it difficult to use algorithms to denoise part of the EEG data, and thus lead to the rejection of these data. Therefore, tools for the quick rejection of heavily corrupted epochs in Long-Term EEG records are highly beneficial. In this paper, a new reliable and fast automatic artifact rejection method for Long-Term EEG based on Isolation Forest (IF) is proposed. Specifically, the IF algorithm is repetitively applied to detect outliers in the EEG data, and the boundary of inliers is promptly adjusted by using a statistical indicator to make the algorithm proceed in an iterative manner. The iteration is terminated when the distance metric between clean epochs and artifact-corrupted epochs remains unchanged. Six statistical indicators (i.e., min, max, median, mean, kurtosis, and skewness) are evaluated by setting them as centroid to adjust the boundary during iteration, and the proposed method is compared with several state-of-the-art methods on a retrospectively collected dataset. The experimental results indicate that utilizing the min value of data as the centroid yields the most optimal performance, and the proposed method is highly efficacious and reliable in the automatic artifact rejection of Long-Term EEG, as it significantly improves the overall data quality. Furthermore, the proposed method surpasses compared methods on most data segments with poor data quality, demonstrating its superior capacity to enhance the data quality of the heavily corrupted data. Besides, owing to the linear time complexity of IF, the proposed method is much faster than other methods, thus providing an advantage when dealing with extensive datasets.

Ongoing EEG artifact correction using blind source separation

OBJECTIVE

Analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) for epileptic spike and seizure detection or brain-computer interfaces can be severely hampered by the presence of artifacts. The aim of this study is to describe and evaluate a fast automatic algorithm for ongoing correction of artifacts in continuous EEG recordings, which can be applied offline and online.

METHODS

The automatic algorithm for ongoing correction of artifacts is based on fast blind source separation. It uses a sliding window technique with overlapping epochs and features in the spatial, temporal and frequency domain to detect and correct ocular, cardiac, muscle and powerline artifacts.

RESULTS

The approach was validated in an independent evaluation study on publicly available continuous EEG data with 2035 marked artifacts. Validation confirmed that 88% of the artifacts could be removed successfully (ocular: 81%, cardiac: 84%, muscle: 98%, powerline: 100%). It outperformed state-of-the-art algorithms both in terms of artifact reduction rates and computation time.

CONCLUSIONS

Fast ongoing artifact correction successfully removed a good proportion of artifacts, while preserving most of the EEG signals.

SIGNIFICANCE

The presented algorithm may be useful for ongoing correction of artifacts, e.g., in online systems for epileptic spike and seizure detection or brain-computer interfaces.

EEG in Down Syndrome-A Review and Insights into Potential Neural Mechanisms

Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) stands out as one of the most prevalent genetic disorders, imposing a significant burden on both society and the healthcare system. Scientists are making efforts to understand the neural mechanisms behind the pathophysiology of this disorder. Among the valuable methods for studying these mechanisms is electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive technique that measures the brain's electrical activity, characterised by its excellent temporal resolution. This review aims to consolidate studies examining EEG usage in individuals with DS. The objective was to identify shared elements of disrupted EEG activity and, crucially, to elucidate the neural mechanisms underpinning these deviations. Searches were conducted on Pubmed/Medline, Research Gate, and Cochrane databases. Results: The literature search yielded 17 relevant articles. Despite the significant time span, small sample size, and overall heterogeneity of the included studies, three common features of aberrant EEG activity in people with DS were found. Potential mechanisms for this altered activity were delineated. Conclusions: The studies included in this review show altered EEG activity in people with DS compared to the control group. To bolster these current findings, future investigations with larger sample sizes are imperative.

Acute Effect of Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Patients with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy: A Preliminary Exploration via Stereoelectroencephalogram

As the pathophysiological mechanisms of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) causing individual differences in the vagal ascending network remains unclear, stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) provides a unique platform to explore the brain networks affected by VNS and helps to understand the anti-seizure mechanism of VNS more comprehensively. This study presents a preliminary exploration of the acute effect of VNS. SEEG signals were collected to assess the acute effect of VNS on neural synchronization in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, especially in epileptogenic networks. The results show that the better the efficacy of VNS, the wider the spread of desynchronization assessed by weighted phase lag index at a high frequency band caused by VNS. Future studies should focus on the association between the change in synchronization and the efficacy of VNS, exploring the possibility of synchronization as a biomarker for patient screening and parameter programming.

EEG Complexity Analysis of Brain States, Tasks and ASD Risk

Autism spectrum disorder is an increasingly prevalent and debilitating neurodevelopmental condition and an electroencephalogram (EEG) diagnostic challenge. Despite large amounts of electrophysiological research over many decades, an EEG biomarker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has not been found. We hypothesized that reductions in complex dynamical system behaviour in the human central nervous system as part of the macroscale neuronal function during cognitive processes might be detectable in whole EEG for higher-risk ASD adults. In three studies, we compared the medians of correlation dimension, largest Lyapunov exponent, Higuchi's fractal dimension, multiscale entropy, multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis and Kolmogorov complexity during resting, cognitive and social skill tasks in 20 EEG channels of 39 adults over a range of ASD risk. We found heterogeneous complexity distribution with clusters of hierarchical sequences pointing to potential cognitive processing differences, but no clear distinction based on ASD risk. We suggest that there is indication of statistically significant differences between complexity measures of brain states and tasks. Though replication of our studies is needed with a larger sample, we believe that our electrophysiological and analytic approach has potential as a biomarker for earlier ASD diagnosis.

Voluntary Respiration Control: Signature Analysis by EEG

The perception of voluntary respiratory consciousness is quite important in some situations, such as respiratory assistance and respiratory rehabilitation training, and the key signatures about voluntary respiration control may lie in the neural signals from brain manifested as electroencephalography (EEG). The present work aims to explore whether there exists correlation between voluntary respiration and scalp EEG. Evoke voluntary respiration of different intensities, while collecting EEG and respiration signal synchronously. Data from 11 participants were analyzed. Spectrum characteristics at low-frequency band were studied. Computation of EEG-respiration phase lock value (PLV) and EEG sample entropy were conducted as well. When breathing voluntarily, the 0-2 Hz band EEG power is significantly enhanced in frontal and right-parietal area. The distance between main peaks belonging to the two signals in 0-2 Hz spectrum graph tends to get smaller, while EEG-respiration PLV increases in frontal area. Besides, the sample entropy of EEG shows a trend of decreasing during voluntary respiration in both areas. There's a strong correlation between voluntary respiration and scalp EEG. Significance: The discoveries will provide guidelines for developing a voluntary respiratory consciousness identifying method and make it possible to monitor people's intention of respiration by noninvasive BCI.

Enhanced Motor Imagery Decoding by Calibration Model-Assisted With Tactile ERD

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we propose a tactile-assisted calibration method for a motor imagery (MI) based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system.

METHOD

In the proposed calibration, tactile stimulation was applied to the hand wrist to assist the subjects in the MI task, which is named SA-MI task. Then, classifier training in the SA-MI Calibration was performed using the SA-MI data, while the Conventional Calibration employed the MI data. After the classifiers were trained, the performance was evaluated on a common MI dataset.

RESULTS

Our study demonstrated that the SA-MI Calibration significantly improved the performance as compared with the Conventional Calibration, with a decoding accuracy of (78.3% vs. 71.3%). Moreover, the average calibration time could be reduced by 40%. This benefit of the SA-MI Calibration effect was further validated by an independent control group, which showed no improvement when tactile stimulation was not applied during the calibration phase. Further analysis showed that when compared with MI, greater motor-related cortical activation and higher R 2 value in the alpha-beta frequency band were induced in SA-MI.

CONCLUSION

Indeed, the SA-MI Calibration could significantly improve the performance and reduce the calibration time as compared with the Conventional Calibration.

SIGNIFICANCE

The proposed tactile stimulation-assisted MI Calibration method holds great potential for a faster and more accurate system setup at the beginning of BCI usage.

Rapid eye movement sleep affects interictal epileptic activity differently in mesiotemporal and neocortical areas

OBJECTIVE

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep reduces the rate and extent of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). Breakthrough epileptic activity during REM sleep is therefore thought to best localize the seizure onset zone (SOZ). We utilized polysomnography combined with direct cortical recordings to investigate the influences of anatomical locations and the time of night on the suppressive effect of REM sleep on IEDs.

METHODS

Forty consecutive patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy underwent combined polysomnography and stereo-electroencephalography during presurgical evaluation. Ten-minute interictal epochs were selected 2 h prior to sleep onset (wakefulness), and from the first and second half of the night during non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep. IEDs were detected automatically across all channels. Anatomic localization, time of night, and channel type (within or outside the SOZ) were tested as modulating factors.

RESULTS

Relative to wakefulness, there was a suppression of IEDs by REM sleep in neocortical regions (median = -27.6%), whereas mesiotemporal regions showed an increase in IEDs (19.1%, p = .01, d = .39). This effect was reversed when comparing the regional suppression of IEDs by REM sleep relative to NREM sleep (-35.1% in neocortical, -58.7% in mesiotemporal, p < .001, d = .39). Across all patients, no clinically relevant novel IED regions were observed in REM sleep versus NREM or wakefulness based on our predetermined thresholds (4 IEDs/min in REM, 0 IEDs/min in NREM and wakefulness). Finally, there was a reduction in IEDs in late (NREM: 1.08/min, REM: .61/min) compared to early sleep (NREM: 1.22/min, REM: .69/min) for both NREM (p < .001, d = .21) and REM (p = .04, d = .14).

SIGNIFICANCE

Our results demonstrate a spatiotemporal effect of IED suppression by REM sleep relative to wakefulness in neocortical but not mesiotemporal regions, and in late versus early sleep. This suggests the importance of considering sleep stage interactions and the potential influences of anatomical locations when using IEDs to define the epileptic focus.

Technical and clinical considerations for electroencephalography-based biomarkers for major depressive disorder

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disease that leads to substantial loss of quality of life. There has been little progress in developing new MDD therapeutics due to a poor understanding of disease heterogeneity and individuals' responses to treatments. Electroencephalography (EEG) is poised to improve this, owing to the ease of large-scale data collection and the advancement of computational methods to address artifacts. This review summarizes the viability of EEG for developing brain-based biomarkers in MDD. We examine the properties of well-established EEG preprocessing pipelines and consider factors leading to the discovery of sensitive and reliable biomarkers.

Tracking gaze position from EEG: Exploring the possibility of an EEG-based virtual eye-tracker

INTRODUCTION

Ocular artifact has long been viewed as an impediment to the interpretation of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in basic and applied research. Today, the use of blind source separation (BSS) methods, including independent component analysis (ICA) and second-order blind identification (SOBI), is considered an essential step in improving the quality of neural signals. Recently, we introduced a method consisting of SOBI and a discriminant and similarity (DANS)-based identification method, capable of identifying and extracting eye movement-related components. These recovered components can be localized within ocular structures with a high goodness of fit (>95%). This raised the possibility that such EEG-derived SOBI components may be used to build predictive models for tracking gaze position.

METHODS

As proof of this new concept, we designed an EEG-based virtual eye-tracker (EEG-VET) for tracking eye movement from EEG alone. The EEG-VET is composed of a SOBI algorithm for separating EEG signals into different components, a DANS algorithm for automatically identifying ocular components, and a linear model to transfer ocular components into gaze positions.

RESULTS

The prototype of EEG-VET achieved an accuracy of 0.920° and precision of 1.510° of a visual angle in the best participant, whereas an average accuracy of 1.008° ± 0.357° and a precision of 2.348° ± 0.580° of a visual angle across all participants (N = 18).

CONCLUSION

This work offers a novel approach that readily co-registers eye movement and neural signals from a single-EEG recording, thus increasing the ease of studying neural mechanisms underlying natural cognition in the context of free eye movement.

A PCA Based Artifact Removal Algorithm for Neural Signal Acquisition with kS/s Sampling Rate

The contamination of stimulus artifacts during Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) brings challenges to the signal processing, especially when the ratio of the kS/s sampling rate to the stimulation frequency is not an integer. In this work we study to deal with this problem. A transfer function is built to describe the relationship between the stimulation signal and the artifact at the acquisition site. A principal component analysis (PCA) based linear regression algorithm for eliminating the artifact is proposed. The algorithm can be used for the artifact removal with low sampling rate of the neural signal. Higher than 60% correlation coefficient of the artifact-free signal and the predetermined self-generated signal is achieved when the artifact is 60dB larger than the predetermined signal. The numerical recipe for the critical algorithm is also proposed, lowering the complexity from cubic degree to square degree.

Removing artefacts and periodically retraining improve performance of neural network-based seizure prediction models

The development of seizure prediction models is often based on long-term scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs) since they capture brain electrical activity, are non-invasive, and come at a relatively low-cost. However, they suffer from major shortcomings. First, long-term EEG is usually highly contaminated with artefacts. Second, changes in the EEG signal over long intervals, known as concept drift, are often neglected. We evaluate the influence of these problems on deep neural networks using EEG time series and on shallow neural networks using widely-used EEG features. Our patient-specific prediction models were tested in 1577 hours of continuous EEG, containing 91 seizures from 41 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy who were undergoing pre-surgical monitoring. Our results showed that cleaning EEG data, using a previously developed artefact removal method based on deep convolutional neural networks, improved prediction performance. We also found that retraining the models over time reduced false predictions. Furthermore, the results show that although deep neural networks processing EEG time series are less susceptible to false alarms, they may need more data to surpass feature-based methods. These findings highlight the importance of robust data denoising and periodic adaptation of seizure prediction models.

Quantitative signal quality assessment for large-scale continuous scalp electroencephalography from a big data perspective

Objective. Despite electroencephalography (EEG) being a widely used neuroimaging technique with an excellent temporal resolution, in practice, the signals are heavily contaminated by artifacts masking responses of interest in an experiment. It is thus essential to guarantee a prompt and effective detection of artifacts that provides quantitative quality assessment (QA) on raw EEG data. This type of pipeline is crucial for large-scale EEG studies. However, current EEG QA studies are still limited.Approach. In this study, combined from a big data perspective, we therefore describe a quantitative signal quality assessment pipeline, a stable and general threshold-based QA pipeline that automatically integrates artifact detection and new QA measures to assess continuous resting-state raw EEG data. One simulation dataset and two resting-state EEG datasets from 42 healthy subjects and 983 clinical patients were utilized to calibrate the QA pipeline.Main Results. The results demonstrate that (1) the QA indices selected are sensitive: they almost strictly and linearly decrease as the noise level increases; (2) stable, replicable QA thresholds are valid for other experimental and clinical EEG datasets; and (3) use of the QA pipeline on these datasets reveals that high-frequency noises are the most common noises in EEG practice. The QA pipeline is also deployed in the WeBrain cloud platform (https://webrain.uestc.edu.cn/, the Chinese EEG Brain Consortium portal).Significance. These findings suggest that the proposed QA pipeline may be a stable and promising approach for quantitative EEG signal quality assessment in large-scale EEG studies.

RELAX part 2: A fully automated EEG data cleaning algorithm that is applicable to Event-Related-Potentials

OBJECTIVE

Electroencephalography (EEG) is often used to examine neural activity time-locked to stimuli presentation, referred to as Event-Related Potentials (ERP). However, EEG is influenced by non-neural artifacts, which can confound ERP comparisons. Artifact cleaning reduces artifacts, but often requires time-consuming manual decisions. Most automated methods filter frequencies <1 Hz out of the data, so are not recommended for ERPs (which contain frequencies <1 Hz). Our aim was to test the RELAX (Reduction of Electroencephalographic Artifacts) pre-processing pipeline for use on ERP data.

METHODS

The cleaning performance of multiple versions of RELAX were compared to four commonly used EEG cleaning pipelines across both artifact cleaning metrics and the amount of variance in ERPs explained by different conditions in a Go-Nogo task. Results RELAX with Multi-channel Wiener Filtering (MWF) and wavelet-enhanced independent component analysis applied to artifacts identified with ICLabel (wICA_ICLabel) cleaned data most effectively and produced amongst the most dependable ERP estimates. RELAX with wICA_ICLabel only or MWF_only may detect effects better for some ERPs.

CONCLUSIONS

RELAX shows high artifact cleaning performance even when data is high-pass filtered at 0.25 Hz (applicable to ERP analyses).

SIGNIFICANCE

RELAX is easy to implement via EEGLAB in MATLAB and freely available on GitHub. Given its performance and objectivity we recommend RELAX to improve artifact cleaning and consistency across ERP research.

Introducing RELAX: An automated pre-processing pipeline for cleaning EEG data - Part 1: Algorithm and application to oscillations

OBJECTIVE

Electroencephalographic (EEG) data are often contaminated with non-neural artifacts which can confound experimental results. Current artifact cleaning approaches often require costly manual input. Our aim was to provide a fully automated EEG cleaning pipeline that addresses all artifact types and improves measurement of EEG outcomes METHODS: We developed RELAX (the Reduction of Electroencephalographic Artifacts). RELAX cleans continuous data using Multi-channel Wiener filtering [MWF] and/or wavelet enhanced independent component analysis [wICA] applied to artifacts identified by ICLabel [wICA_ICLabel]). Several versions of RELAX were compared using three datasets (N = 213, 60 and 23 respectively) against six commonly used pipelines across a range of artifact cleaning metrics, including measures of remaining blink and muscle activity, and the variance explained by experimental manipulations after cleaning.

RESULTS

RELAX with MWF and wICA_ICLabel showed amongst the best performance at cleaning blink and muscle artifacts while preserving neural signal. RELAX with wICA_ICLabel only may perform better at differentiating alpha oscillations between working memory conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

RELAX provides automated, objective and high-performing EEG cleaning, is easy to use, and freely available on GitHub.

SIGNIFICANCE

We recommend RELAX for data cleaning across EEG studies to reduce artifact confounds, improve outcome measurement and improve inter-study consistency.

Circulant Singular Spectrum Analysis and Discrete Wavelet Transform for Automated Removal of EOG Artifacts from EEG Signals

Background: Portable electroencephalogram (EEG) systems are often used in health care applications to record brain signals because their ease of use. An electrooculogram (EOG) is a common, low frequency, high amplitude artifact of the eye blink signal that might confuse disease diagnosis. As a result, artifact removal approaches in single EEG portable devices are in high demand. Materials: Dataset 2a from the BCI Competition IV was employed. It contains the EEG data from nine subjects. To determine the EOG effect, each session starts with 5 min of EEG data. This recording lasted for two minutes with the eyes open, one minute with the eyes closed, and one minute with eye movements. Methodology: This article presents the automated removal of EOG artifacts from EEG signals. Circulant Singular Spectrum Analysis (CiSSA) was used to decompose the EOG contaminated EEG signals into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Next, we identified the artifact signal components using kurtosis and energy values and removed them using 4-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Results: The proposed approach was evaluated on synthetic and real EEG data and found to be effective in eliminating EOG artifacts while maintaining low frequency EEG information. CiSSA-DWT achieved the best signal to artifact ratio (SAR), mean absolute error (MAE), relative root mean square error (RRMSE), and correlation coefficient (CC) of 1.4525, 0.0801, 18.274, and 0.9883, respectively. Comparison: The developed technique outperforms existing artifact suppression techniques according to performance measures. Conclusions: This advancement is important for brain science and can contribute as an initial pre-processing step for research related to EEG signals.

Quantitative artifact reduction and pharmacologic paralysis improve detection of EEG epileptiform activity in critically ill patients

OBJECTIVE

Epileptiform activity is common in critically ill patients, but movement-related artifacts-including electromyography (EMG) and myoclonus-can obscure EEG, limiting detection of epileptiform activity. We sought to determine the ability of pharmacologic paralysis and quantitative artifact reduction (AR) to improve epileptiform discharge detection.

METHODS

Retrospective analysis of patients who underwent continuous EEG monitoring with pharmacologic paralysis. Four reviewers read each patient's EEG pre- and post- both paralysis and AR, and indicated the presence of epileptiform discharges. We compared the interrater reliability (IRR) of identifying discharges at baseline, post-AR, and post-paralysis, and compared the performance of AR and paralysis according to artifact type.

RESULTS

IRR of identifying epileptiform discharges at baseline was slight (N = 30; κ = 0.10) with a trend toward increase post-AR (κ = 0.26, p = 0.053) and a significant increase post-paralysis (κ = 0.51, p = 0.001). AR was as effective as paralysis at improving IRR of identifying discharges in those with high EMG artifact (N = 15; post-AR κ = 0.63, p = 0.009; post-paralysis κ = 0.62, p = 0.006) but not with primarily myoclonus artifact (N = 15).

CONCLUSIONS

Paralysis improves detection of epileptiform activity in critically ill patients when movement-related artifact obscures EEG features. AR improves detection as much as paralysis when EMG artifact is high, but is ineffective when the primary source of artifact is myoclonus.

SIGNIFICANCE

In the appropriate setting, both AR and paralysis facilitate identification of epileptiform activity in critically ill patients.

Multikernel Correntropy for Robust Learning

As a novel similarity measure that is defined as the expectation of a kernel function between two random variables, correntropy has been successfully applied in robust machine learning and signal processing to combat large outliers. The kernel function in correntropy is usually a zero-mean Gaussian kernel. In a recent work, the concept of mixture correntropy (MC) was proposed to improve the learning performance, where the kernel function is a mixture Gaussian kernel, namely, a linear combination of several zero-mean Gaussian kernels with different widths. In both correntropy and MC, the center of the kernel function is, however, always located at zero. In the present work, to further improve the learning performance, we propose the concept of multikernel correntropy (MKC), in which each component of the mixture Gaussian kernel can be centered at a different location. The properties of the MKC are investigated and an efficient approach is proposed to determine the free parameters in MKC. Experimental results show that the learning algorithms under the maximum MKC criterion (MMKCC) can outperform those under the original maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) and the maximum MC criterion (MMCC).

Real-time noise cancellation with deep learning

Biological measurements are often contaminated with large amounts of non-stationary noise which require effective noise reduction techniques. We present a new real-time deep learning algorithm which produces adaptively a signal opposing the noise so that destructive interference occurs. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the algorithm's performance by reducing electromyogram noise in electroencephalograms with the usage of a custom, flexible, 3D-printed, compound electrode. With this setup, an average of 4dB and a maximum of 10dB improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of the EEG was achieved by removing wide band muscle noise. This concept has the potential to not only adaptively improve the signal-to-noise ratio of EEG but can be applied to a wide range of biological, industrial and consumer applications such as industrial sensing or noise cancelling headphones.

Introducing block-Toeplitz covariance matrices to remaster linear discriminant analysis for event-related potential brain-computer interfaces

Objective.Covariance matrices of noisy multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) time series data provide essential information for the decoding of brain signals using machine learning methods. However, small datasets and high dimensionality make it hard to estimate these matrices. In brain-computer interfaces (BCI) based on event-related potentials (ERP) and a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, the state of the art covariance estimation uses shrinkage regularization. As this is a general covariance regularization approach, we aim at improving LDA further by better exploiting the domain-specific characteristics of the EEG to regularize the covariance estimates.Approach.We propose to enforce a block-Toeplitz structure for the covariance matrix of the LDA, which implements an assumption of signal stationarity in short time windows for each channel.Main results.An offline re-analysis of data collected from 213 subjects under 13 different event-related potential BCI protocols showed a significantly increased binary classification performance of this 'ToeplitzLDA' compared to shrinkage regularized LDA (up to 6 AUC points,p < 0.001) and Riemannian classification approaches (up to 2 AUC points,p < 0.001). In an unsupervised visual speller application, this improvement would translate to a relative reduction of spelling errors by 81% on average for 25 subjects. Additionally, aside from lower memory and reduced time complexity for LDA training, ToeplitzLDA proves to be robust against drastic increases of the number of temporal features.Significance.The proposed covariance estimation allows BCI researchers to improve classification rates and reduce calibration times of BCI protocols using event-related potentials and thus support the usability of corresponding applications. Its lower computational and memory needs could make it a valuable algorithm especially for mobile BCIs.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Detection: Past, Present, and Future

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can produce temporary biochemical imbalance due to leaks through cell membranes or disruption of the axoplasmic flow due to the misalignment of intracellular neurofilaments. If untreated, TBI can lead to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or total disability. Mild TBI (mTBI) accounts for about about 90 percent of all TBI cases. The detection of TBI as soon as it happens is crucial for successful treatment management. Neuroimaging-based tests provide only a structural and functional mapping of the brain with poor temporal resolution. Such tests may not detect mTBI. On the other hand, the electroencephalogram (EEG) provides good spatial resolution and excellent temporal resolution of the brain activities beside its portability and low cost. The objective of this paper is to provide clinicians and scientists with a one-stop source of information to quickly learn about the different technologies used for TBI detection, their advantages and limitations. Our research led us to conclude that even though EEG-based TBI detection is potentially a powerful technology, it is currently not able to detect the presence of a mTBI with high confidence. The focus of the paper is to review existing approaches and provide the reason for the unsuccessful state of EEG-based detection of mTBI.

FiNN: A toolbox for neurophysiological network analysis

Recently, neuroscience has seen a shift from localist approaches to network-wide investigations of brain function. Neurophysiological signals across different spatial and temporal scales provide insight into neural communication. However, additional methodological considerations arise when investigating network-wide brain dynamics rather than local effects. Specifically, larger amounts of data, investigated across a higher dimensional space, are necessary. Here, we present FiNN (Find Neurophysiological Networks), a novel toolbox for the analysis of neurophysiological data with a focus on functional and effective connectivity. FiNN provides a wide range of data processing methods and statistical and visualization tools to facilitate inspection of connectivity estimates and the resulting metrics of brain dynamics. The Python toolbox and its documentation are freely available as Supporting Information. We evaluated FiNN against a number of established frameworks on both a conceptual and an implementation level. We found FiNN to require much less processing time and memory than other toolboxes. In addition, FiNN adheres to a design philosophy of easy access and modifiability, while providing efficient data processing implementations. Since the investigation of network-level neural dynamics is experiencing increasing interest, we place FiNN at the disposal of the neuroscientific community as open-source software.

ABOT: an open-source online benchmarking tool for machine learning-based artefact detection and removal methods from neuronal signals

Brain signals are recorded using different techniques to aid an accurate understanding of brain function and to treat its disorders. Untargeted internal and external sources contaminate the acquired signals during the recording process. Often termed as artefacts, these contaminations cause serious hindrances in decoding the recorded signals; hence, they must be removed to facilitate unbiased decision-making for a given investigation. Due to the complex and elusive manifestation of artefacts in neuronal signals, computational techniques serve as powerful tools for their detection and removal. Machine learning (ML) based methods have been successfully applied in this task. Due to ML’s popularity, many articles are published every year, making it challenging to find, compare and select the most appropriate method for a given experiment. To this end, this paper presents ABOT (Artefact removal Benchmarking Online Tool) as an online benchmarking tool which allows users to compare existing ML-driven artefact detection and removal methods from the literature. The characteristics and related information about the existing methods have been compiled as a knowledgebase (KB) and presented through a user-friendly interface with interactive plots and tables for users to search it using several criteria. Key characteristics extracted from over 120 articles from the literature have been used in the KB to help compare the specific ML models. To comply with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principle, the source code and documentation of the toolbox have been made available via an open-access repository.

EEG artifact removal using sub-space decomposition, nonlinear dynamics, stationary wavelet transform and machine learning algorithms

Blind source separation (BSS) methods have received a great deal of attention in electroencephalogram (EEG) artifact elimination as they are routine and standard signal processing tools to remove artifacts and reserve desired neural information. On the other hand, a classifier should follow BSS methods to automatically identify artifactual sources and remove them in the following steps. In addition, removing all detected artifactual components leads to loss of information since some desired information related to neural activity leaks to these sources. So, an approach should be employed to detect and suppress the artifacts and reserve neural activity. This study introduces a novel method based on EEG and Poincare planes in the phase space to detect artifactual components estimated by second-order blind identification (SOBI). Artifacts are detected using a mixture of well-known conventional classifiers and were removed employing stationary wavelet transform (SWT) to reserve neural information. The proposed method is a combination of signal processing techniques and machine learning algorithms, including multi-layer perceptron (MLP), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), naïve Bayes, and support vector machine (SVM) which have significant results while applying our proposed method to different scenarios. Simulated, semi-simulated, and real EEG signals are employed to evaluate the proposed method, and several evaluation criteria are calculated. We achieved acceptable results, for example, 98% average accuracy and 97% average sensitivity in artifactual EEG component detection or about 2% as mean square error in EEG reconstruction after artifact removal. Results showed that the proposed method is effective and can be used in future studies as we have considered different real-world scenarios to evaluate it.

Wavelet Based Filters for Artifact Elimination in Electroencephalography Signal: A Review

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a diagnostic test that records and measures the electrical activity of the human brain. Research investigating human behaviors and conditions using EEG has increased from year to year. Therefore, an efficient approach is vital to process the EEG dataset to improve the output signal quality. The wavelet is one of the well-known approaches for processing the EEG signal in time-frequency domain analysis. The wavelet is better than the traditional Fourier Transform because it has good time-frequency localized properties and multi-resolution analysis where the transient information of an EEG signal can be extracted efficiently. Thus, this review article aims to comprehensively describe the application of the wavelet method in denoising the EEG signal based on recent research. This review begins with a brief overview of the basic theory and characteristics of EEG and the wavelet transform method. Then, several wavelet-based methods commonly applied in EEG dataset denoising are described and a considerable number of the latest published EEG research works with wavelet applications are reviewed. Besides, the challenges that exist in current EEG-based wavelet method research are discussed. Finally, alternative solutions to mitigate the issues are recommended.

EPIC: Annotated epileptic EEG independent components for artifact reduction

Scalp electroencephalogram is a non-invasive multi-channel biosignal that records the brain’s electrical activity. It is highly susceptible to noise that might overshadow important data. Independent component analysis is one of the most used artifact removal methods. Independent component analysis separates data into different components, although it can not automatically reject the noisy ones. Therefore, experts are needed to decide which components must be removed before reconstructing the data. To automate this method, researchers have developed classifiers to identify noisy components. However, to build these classifiers, they need annotated data. Manually classifying independent components is a time-consuming task. Furthermore, few labelled data are publicly available. This paper presents a source of annotated electroencephalogram independent components acquired from patients with epilepsy (EPIC Dataset). This dataset contains 77,426 independent components obtained from approximately 613 hours of electroencephalogram, visually inspected by two experts, which was already successfully utilised to develop independent component classifiers.

Future Opportunities for Research in Rescue Treatments

Clinical studies of rescue medications for seizure clusters are limited and are designed to satisfy regulatory requirements, which may not fully consider the needs of the diverse patient population that experiences seizure clusters or utilize rescue medication. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the factors that contribute to, or may influence the quality of, seizure cluster research with a goal of improving clinical practice. We address five areas of unmet needs and provide advice for how they could enhance future trials of seizure cluster treatments. The topics addressed in this article are: (1) unaddressed end points to pursue in future studies, (2) roles for devices to enhance rescue medication clinical development programs, (3) tools to study seizure cluster prediction and prevention, (4) the value of other designs for seizure cluster studies, and (5) unique challenges of future trial paradigms for seizure clusters. By focusing on novel end points and technologies with value to patients, caregivers, and clinicians, data obtained from future studies can benefit the diverse patient population that experiences seizure clusters, providing more effective, appropriate care as well as alleviating demands on health care resources.

Energy-Efficient Tree-Based EEG Artifact Detection

In the context of epilepsy monitoring, EEG artifacts are often mistaken for seizures due to their morphological simi-larity in both amplitude and frequency, making seizure detection systems susceptible to higher false alarm rates. In this work we present the implementation of an artifact detection algorithm based on a minimal number of EEG channels on a parallel ultra-low-power (PULP) embedded platform. The analyses are based on the TUH EEG Artifact Corpus dataset and focus on the temporal electrodes. First, we extract optimal feature models in the frequency domain using an automated machine learning framework, achieving a 93.95% accuracy, with a 0.838 F1 score for a 4 temporal EEG channel setup. The achieved accuracy levels surpass state-of-the-art by nearly 20%. Then, these algorithms are parallelized and optimized for a PULP platform, achieving a 5.21x improvement of energy-efficient compared to state-of-the-art low-power implementations of artifact detection frameworks. Combining this model with a low-power seizure detection algorithm would allow for 300h of continuous monitoring on a 300 mAh battery in a wearable form factor and power budget. These results pave the way for implementing affordable, wearable, long-term epilepsy monitoring solutions with low false-positive rates and high sensitivity, meeting both patients' and caregivers' requirements. Clinical relevance- The proposed EEG artifact detection framework can be employed on wearable EEG recording devices, in combination with EEG-based epilepsy detection algorithms, for improved robustness in epileptic seizure detection scenarios.

A Novel Method for ECG Artifact Removal from EEG without Simultaneous ECG

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a common source of electrical artifact in electroencephalogram (EEG). Here, we present a novel method for removing ECG artifact that requires neither simultaneous ECG nor transformation of the EEG signals. The approach relies upon processing a subset of EEG channels that contain ECG artifact to identify the times of each R-wave of the ECG. Within selected brief epochs, data in each EEG channel is signal-averaged ± 60 ms around each R-wave to derive an ECG template specific to each channel. This template is subtracted from each EEG channel which are aligned with the R-waves. The methodology was developed using two cohorts of infants: one with 128-lead EEG including an ECG reference and another with 32-lead EEG without ECG reference. The results for the first cohort validated the methodology the ECG reference and the second demonstrated its feasibility when ECG was not recorded. This method does not require independent, simultaneous recording of ECG, nor does it involve creation of an artifact template based on a mixture of EEG channel data as required by other methods such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Spectral analysis confirms that the method compares favorably to results using simultaneous recordings of ECG. The method removes ECG artifact on an epoch by epoch level and does not require stationarity of the artifact. Clinical Relevance - This approach facilitates the removal of ECG noise in frequency bands known to play a central role in brain mechanisms underlying cognitive processes.

Development of an Adaptive Artifact Subspace Reconstruction Based on Hebbian/Anti-Hebbian Learning Networks for Enhancing BCI Performance

Brain-computer interface (BCI) actively translates the brain signals into executable actions by establishing direct communication between the human brain and external devices. Recording brain activity through electroencephalography (EEG) is generally contaminated with both physiological and nonphysiological artifacts, which significantly hinders the BCI performance. Artifact subspace reconstruction (ASR) is a well-known statistical technique that automatically removes artifact components by determining the rejection threshold based on the initial reference EEG segment in multichannel EEG recordings. In real-world applications, the fixed threshold may limit the efficacy of the artifact correction, especially when the quality of the reference data is poor. This study proposes an adaptive online ASR technique by integrating the Hebbian/anti-Hebbian neural networks into the ASR algorithm, namely, principle subspace projection ASR (PSP-ASR) and principal subspace whitening ASR (PSW-ASR) that segmentwise self-organize the artifact subspace by updating the synaptic weights according to the Hebbian and anti-Hebbian learning rules. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is compared to the conventional ASR approaches on benchmark EEG dataset and three BCI frameworks, including steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), and motor imagery (MI) by evaluating the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the Pearson correlation, and classification accuracy. The results demonstrated that the PSW-ASR algorithm effectively removed the EEG artifacts and retained the activity-specific brain signals compared to the PSP-ASR, standard ASR (Init-ASR), and moving-window ASR (MW-ASR) methods, thereby enhancing the SSVEP, RSVP, and MI BCI performances. Finally, our empirical results from the PSW-ASR algorithm suggested the choice of an aggressive cutoff range of c = 1-10 for activity-specific BCI applications and a moderate range of for the benchmark dataset and general BCI applications.

Transcutaneous Cervical Vagus Nerve Stimulation Induces Changes in the Electroencephalogram and Heart Rate Variability of Healthy Dogs, a Pilot Study

Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) has been used to treat epilepsy in people and dogs. Objective electroencephalographic (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) data associated with tcVNS have been reported in people. The question remained whether EEG and electrocardiography (ECG) would detect changes in brain activity and HRV, respectively, after tcVNS in dogs. Simultaneous EEG and Holter recordings, from 6 client-owned healthy dogs were compared for differences pre- and post- tcVNS in frequency band power analysis (EEG) and HRV. The feasibility and tolerance of the patients to the tcVNS were also noted. In a general linear mixed model, the average power per channel per frequency band was found to be significantly different pre- and post-stimulation in the theta (p = 0.02) and alpha bands (p = 0.04). The pooled power spectral analysis detected a significant decrease in the alpha (p < 0.01), theta (p = 0.01) and beta (p = 0.035) frequencies post-stimulation. No significant interaction was observed between dog, attitude, and stimulation in the multivariate model, neither within the same dog nor between individuals. There was a significant increase in the HRV measured by the standard deviation of the inter-beat (SDNN) index (p < 0.01) and a decrease in mean heart rate (p < 0.01) after tcVNS. The tcVNS was found to be well-tolerated. The results of this pilot study suggest that EEG and ECG can detect changes in brain activity and HRV associated with tcVNS in healthy dogs. Larger randomized controlled studies are required to confirm the results of this study and to assess tcVNS potential therapeutic value.

Assessing Pain Research: A Narrative Review of Emerging Pain Methods, Their Technosocial Implications, and Opportunities for Multidisciplinary Approaches

Pain research traverses many disciplines and methodologies. Yet, despite our understanding and field-wide acceptance of the multifactorial essence of pain as a sensory perception, emotional experience, and biopsychosocial condition, pain scientists and practitioners often remain siloed within their domain expertise and associated techniques. The context in which the field finds itself today-with increasing reliance on digital technologies, an on-going pandemic, and continued disparities in pain care-requires new collaborations and different approaches to measuring pain. Here, we review the state-of-the-art in human pain research, summarizing emerging practices and cutting-edge techniques across multiple methods and technologies. For each, we outline foreseeable technosocial considerations, reflecting on implications for standards of care, pain management, research, and societal impact. Through overviewing alternative data sources and varied ways of measuring pain and by reflecting on the concerns, limitations, and challenges facing the field, we hope to create critical dialogues, inspire more collaborations, and foster new ideas for future pain research methods.

A Brief Summary of EEG Artifact Handling

There are various obstacles in the way of use of EEG. Among these, the major obstacles are the artifacts. While some artifacts are avoidable, due to the nature of the EEG techniques there are inevitable artifacts as well. Artifacts can be categorized as internal/physiological or external/non-physiological. The most common internal artifacts are ocular or muscular origins. Internal artifacts are difficult to detect and remove, because they contain signal information as well. For both resting state EEG and ERP studies, artifact handling needs to be carefully carried out in order to retain the maximal signal. Therefore, an effective management of these inevitable artifacts is critical for the EEG based researches. Many researchers from various fields studied this challenging phenomenon and came up with some solutions. However, the developed methods are not well known by the real practitioners of EEG as a tool because of their limited knowledge about these engineering approaches. They still use the traditional visual inspection of the EEG. This work aims to inform the researchers working in the field of EEG about the artifacts and artifact management options available in order to increase the awareness of the available tools such as EEG preprocessing pipelines.

Brains in Sync: Practical Guideline for Parent-Infant EEG During Natural Interaction

Parent-infant EEG is a novel hyperscanning paradigm to measure social interaction simultaneously in the brains of parents and infants. The number of studies using parent-infant dual-EEG as a theoretical framework to measure brain-to-brain synchrony during interaction is rapidly growing, while the methodology for measuring synchrony is not yet uniform. While adult dual-EEG methodology is quickly improving, open databases, tutorials, and methodological validations for dual-EEG with infants are largely missing. In this practical guide, we provide a step-by-step manual on how to implement and run parent-infant EEG paradigms in a neurodevelopmental laboratory in naturalistic settings (e.g., free interactions). Next, we highlight insights on the variety of choices that can be made during (pre)processing dual-EEG data, including recommendations on interpersonal neural coupling metrics and interpretations of the results. Moreover, we provide an exemplar dataset of two mother-infant dyads during free interactions ("free play") that may serve as practice material. Instead of providing a critical note, we would like to move the field of parent-infant EEG forward and be transparent about the challenges that come along with the exciting opportunity to study the development of our social brain within the naturalistic context of dual-EEG.
