Abstract
BACKGROUND There are conflicting results among studies on the association between serum ferritin (SF) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and by groups of sex/menopausal status. To date, there are no studies on British populations. The SF-MetS association might be U/J-shaped. We evaluated whether SF was independently associated with MetS (harmonized definition) in people from Shetland, Scotland. METHODS We analysed cross-sectional data from the Viking Health Study-Shetland (589 premenopausal women [PreMW], 625 postmenopausal women [PostW] and 832 men). Logistic regressions using two approaches, one with the lowest sex and menopausal status-specific ferritin quartile (Q) as the reference and other using the middle two quartiles combined (2-3) as the reference, were conducted to estimate the SF-MetS association. The shape of the association was verified via cubic spline analyses. The associations were adjusted for age, inflammatory and hepatic injury markers, alcohol intake, smoking and BMI. RESULTS Prevalence of MetS was 18.3%. Among PostMW both low and high SF were associated with MetS (fully adjusted odds ratios [95% confidence interval] compared to the middle two quartiles combined were: 1.99 [1.17-3.38] p =.011 for Q1 and 2.10 [1.27-3.49] p =.004 for Q4) This U-shaped pattern was confirmed in the cubic spline analysis in PostMW with a ferritin range of 15-200 ug/L. In men, a positive association between ferritin quartiles with Q1 as the reference, did not remain significant after adjustment for BMI. CONCLUSION Extreme quartiles of iron status were positively associated with MetS in PostMW, while no SF-MetS associations were found in men or PreMW. The ferritin-MetS association pattern differs between populations and U/J-shaped associations may exist.

Abstract
Introduction The obesity epidemic has been linked to a wide range of health and nutritional problems, including anemia, which is often caused by impaired iron metabolism. The World Health Organization considers anemia and obesity to be global health issues among adolescent girls and women experiencing menstruation. This study aims to examine the association between iron deficiency anemia and obesity/overweight among female medical students. Methodology This cross-sectional descriptive study conducted as an online self-administered questionnaire. Furthermore, blood samples were collected from 206 students to evaluate the complete blood count, iron and lipid profile. Results The convenience sampling technique was used and a total of 206 students were enrolled in the study. The average body mass index (BMI) was 22.51 ± 3.25, with 83.5% (n = 172) falling within the normal weight range, 12.6% (n = 26) as overweight, and 3.9% (n = 8) as obese. Anemia was present in 16.0% (n = 33) of the participants overall. Higher prevalence of anemia was observed among overweight participants with 10 out of 26 (38.5%) subjects compared to obese with two out of eight (25.0%) and normal weight 21 out of 172 (12.2%); this difference was highly significant (P = 0.005). Individuals with anemia exhibited a significant association with those experiencing a diet full of unhealthy fats and carbohydrates (P = 0.05) and a diet containing all essential nutrients (P = 0.01). There is no statistically significant correlation between anemia prevalence and participants' response to the presence of signs of anemia, physical activity or other dietary habits. Obese participants had a significantly higher mean value of triglycerides (129.5 ± 20.5) compared to normal weight and overweight participants (74.5 ± 12.02 and 51.2 ± 15.04), respectively (P = 0.001). Conclusion A dependable assembly exists between obesity and overweight in cases of iron deficient anemia. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia was substantially higher among overweight/obese females, highlighting that overweight/obesity signifies both quantitative and qualitative malnutrition. A high BMI was associated with elevated triglycerides, typically considered indicators of obesity. This association may suggest compromised iron homeostasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ferritin is associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the ferritin levels differ across the body compositions. Although there were studies reporting the association of ferritin and diabetes, the alteration in ferritin-diabetes association by body composition differences is rarely explained. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify the effects of body compositions on the association between ferritin and diabetes parameters among the Japanese population. METHODS This study analyzed the data of a cross-sectional study with 1065 subjects aged over 19 years in the Iwaki area, Japan. Independent variables were ferritin and body compositions, while dependent variables were blood sugar, HbA1c, and diabetes mellitus. Correlations between serum ferritin and blood sugar and HbA1c were analyzed using Spearman's Rank Correlation. Multivariate linear or logistic regressions were used to investigate the effects of body compositions (body fat percentage, muscle mass, or visceral fat level) on the ferritin-diabetes associations by adjusting the confounders. RESULTS There were significant positive correlations between ferritin and blood sugar in both sexes (p < 0.05), while a significant correlation between ferritin and HbA1c was found only in females (p < 0.001). Higher ferritin was significantly associated with an increase in blood sugar in individuals with normal body fat percentage (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=5.07, 95 % confidence intervals [CI]: 1.48-8.65), normal visceral fat level (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=4.84, 95 % CI: 1.74-7.94), and very high muscle mass (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=14.14, 95 % CI: 5.00-23.29). CONCLUSIONS By our study findings, individuals' body composition notably influenced the associations of serum ferritin and diabetes parameters, and the association was attenuated in obese individuals.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial metabolic disorder affecting more than 450 million people across the globe. With the increasing prevalence of T2D and obesity, the role of fat accumulation at sites other than subcutaneous adipose tissue has received significant attention in the pathophysiology of T2D. Over the past decade and a half, a pressing concern has emerged on investigating the association of pancreatic fat accumulation or pancreatic steatosis with the development of disease. While a few reports have suggested a possible association between pancreatic fat and T2D and/or impaired glucose metabolism, a few reports suggest a lack of such association. Pancreatic fat has also been linked with genetic risk of developing T2D, prediabetes, reduced insulin secretion, and beta cell dysfunction albeit some confounding factors such as age and ethnicity may affect the outcome. With the technological advancements in clinical imaging and progress in assessment of pancreatic beta cell function, our understanding of the role of pancreatic fat in causing insulin resistance and development of various etiologies of T2D has significantly improved. This review summarizes various findings on the possible association of pancreatic fat accumulation with the pathophysiology of T2D.

Abstract
Increased levels of metal ions in human seminal fluid have a significant correlation with male fertility. Few publications explain the effect of metals in semen and their influence on assisted reproductive treatments. Semen parameters and the levels of twenty-two metals were measured in the seminal fluid of 102 men attended in a Reproductive Unit. Metals were determined by optical emission spectrophotometry. A statistical relationship was found between spermiogram and iron, which was lower than expected in pathological spermiograms (p = 0.032); zinc (p = 0.066), calcium (p = 0.047), and magnesium (p = 0.048) mean levels were higher in normozoospermics. More days of sexual abstinence correlates with higher seminal zinc (p = 0.001) and magnesium levels (p = 0.002). Lower vanadium values were found to be associated with higher fertilization rates (p = 0.039). Higher values of lead (p = 0.052) and vanadium (p = 0.032) were obtained in patients who did not reach 100% embryo cleavage rate. Aluminium (p = 0.042) and sodium (p = 0.002) were found in lower amounts associated with better blastocyst rates. The implantation rate shows an inverse association with women's age and iron and calcium content, compared to magnesium and sodium which presented a significant direct association with this percentage. A significant direct relationship was found between the positive evolution of pregnancy and the values of zinc (p = 0.004), calcium (p = 0.013), potassium (p = 0.002), and magnesium (p = 0.009). The study confirms that zinc, iron, calcium, sodium, aluminium, magnesium, vanadium, and lead have positive-negative effects on reproduction and support the analysis of metals in semen as a new line of study on male fertility with implications for reproductive outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is characterized by adipose tissue dysregulation and predisposes individuals to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. At the molecular level, adipocyte dysfunction has been linked to obesity-triggered oxidative stress and protein carbonylation, considering protein carbonylation as a link between oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. The identification of specific carbonylated proteins in adipose tissue could provide novel biomarkers of oxidative damage related to metabolic status (i.e prediabetes). Thus, we aimed at characterizing the subcutaneous and omental human adipose tissue carbonylome in obesity-associated insulin resistance. METHODS 2D-PAGE was used to identify carbonylated proteins, and clinical correlations studies and molecular biology approaches including intracellular trafficking, reactive oxygen species assay, and iron content were performed using in vitro models of insulin resistance. RESULTS The carbonylome of human adipose tissue included common (serotransferrin, vimentin, actin, and annexin A2) and depot-specific (carbonic anhydrase and α-crystallin B in the subcutaneous depot; and α-1-antitrypsin and tubulin in the omental depot) differences that point out the complexity of oxidative stress at the metabolic level, highlighting changes in carbonylated transferrin expression. Posterior studies using in vitro prediabetic model evidence alteration in transferrin receptor translocation, linked to the prediabetic environment. Finally, ligand-receptor molecular docking studies showed a reduced affinity for carbonylated transferrin binding to its receptor compared to wild-type transferrin, emphasizing the role of transferrin carbonylation in the link between oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS The adipose tissue carbonylome contributes to understanding the molecular mechanism driving adipocyte dysfunction and identifies possible adipose tissue carbonylated targets in obesity-associated insulin resistance.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery (BS) is the most effective treatment in reducing weight and the burden of comorbidities in patients with severe obesity. Despite the overall low mortality rate, intra- and post-operative complications remains quite common. Weight loss before BS reduces surgical risk, but studies are inconclusive regarding which is the best approach to apply. In this review, we summarize the current evidence on the effect of a ketogenic diet (KD) before BS. All studies agree that KD leads to considerable weight loss and important improvements in terms of surgical risk, but populations, interventions and outcomes are very heterogeneous. KD appears to be a safe and effective approach to induce weight loss before BS. However, randomized controlled trials with better-defined dietary protocols and homogeneous outcomes are necessary in order to draw firm conclusions.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies have documented an association between diabetes and increased risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Based on animal model studies, several mechanisms have been proposed to explain such an association, including central insulin signaling, neurodegeneration, brain amyloidosis, and neuroinflammation. Nevertheless, the exact mechanisms in humans remain poorly defined. It is reasonable, however, that many pathways may be involved in these patients leading to cognitive impairment. A major aim of clinicians is identifying early onset of neurologic signs and symptoms in elderly diabetics to improve quality of life of those with cognitive impairment and reduce costs associated with long-term complications. Several biomarkers have been proposed to identify diabetics at higher risk of developing dementia and diagnose early stage dementia. Although biomarkers of brain amyloidosis, neurodegeneration and synaptic plasticity are commonly used to diagnose dementia, especially Alzheimer disease, their role in diabetes remains unclear. The aim of this review is to explore the molecular mechanisms linking diabetes with cognitive decline and present the most important findings on the clinical use of biomarkers for diagnosing and predicting early cognitive decline in diabetics.

Fortified Fermented Rice-Acid Can Regulate the Gut Microbiota in Mice and Improve the Antioxidant Capacity. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13124219. Abstract
The study aimed to explore the effects of fortified fermented rice-acid on the antioxidant capacity of mouse serum and the gut microbiota. Hair characteristics, body mass index, intestinal villus height, intestinal crypt depth, serum antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota of mice were first measured and the correlation between the antioxidant capacity of mouse serum and the gut microbiota was then explored. The mice in the lactic acid bacteria group (L-group), the mixed bacteria group (LY-group), and the rice soup group (R-group) kept their weight well and had better digestion. The mice in the L-group had the better hair quality (dense), but the hair quality in the R-group and the yeast group (Y-group) was relatively poor (sparse). In addition, the inoculation of Lactobacillus paracasei H4-11 (L. paracasei H4-11) and Kluyveromyces marxianus L1-1 (K. marxianus L1-1) increased the villus height/crypt depth of the mice (3.043 ± 0.406) compared to the non-inoculation group (R-group) (2.258 ± 0.248). The inoculation of L. paracasei H4-11 and K. marxianus L1-1 in fermented rice-acid enhanced the blood antioxidant capacity of mouse serum (glutathione 29.503 ± 6.604 umol/L, malonaldehyde 0.687 ± 0.125 mmol/L, catalase 15.644 ± 4.618 U/mL, superoxide dismutase 2.292 ± 0.201 U/mL). In the gut microbiota of L-group and LY-group, beneficial microorganisms (Lactobacillus and Blautia) increased, but harmful microorganisms (Candidatus Arthromitus and Erysipelotrichales) decreased. L. paracasei H4-11 and K. marxianus L1-1 might have a certain synergistic effect on the improvement in antibacterial function since they reduced harmful microorganisms in the gut microbiota of mice. The study provides the basis for the development of fortified fermented rice-acid products for regulating the gut microbiota and improving the antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Despite the increasing worldwide prevalence of obesity and iron deficiency (ID), there are still no guidelines on how to treat and manage obesity-related ID. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate whether weight loss can re-establish iron homoeostasis among subjects with unhealthy weight (overweight [OW] or obesity). PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were systemically searched for studies that compared the iron status before and after a weight-loss intervention. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled and subgroup weighted mean differences (WMDs) of iron biomarkers. In total, 879 subjects were pooled across 14 studies. Improved haemoglobin was found in longitudinal studies (WMD = 2.50 g/dl, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88, 4.12 g/dl, I2 = 14%) but not in randomized controlled trials or after being stratified by dietary programmes. Significantly increased transferrin saturation was observed in pooled (WMD = 1.68%, 95% CI: 0.97%, 2.39%, I2 = 44%) and subgroup analyses. A meta-regression showed that changes in the iron status were positively correlated with changes in the body mass index (BMI) and the intervention duration but negatively correlated with the baseline body weight/BMI, age, gender and a standard hypocaloric diet. Our data suggested that in spite of energy restrictions, weight loss may help re-establish iron homoeostasis in people who are OW or obese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased dietary meat may deplete iron stores, as plant-derived iron bioavailability is typically limited. OBJECTIVES We explored the effect of a low-meat Mediterranean (green-MED) diet, supplemented with Wolffia globosa duckweed (Mankai: rich in protein and iron) as a food source for humans, on iron status. We further examined the iron bioavailability of Mankai in rats. METHODS Two hundred and ninety-four abdominally obese/dyslipidemic [mean age = 51.1 y; body mass index (kg/m2) = 31.3; 88% men] nonanemic participants were randomly assigned to physical activity (PA), PA + MED diet, or PA + green-MED diet. Both isocaloric MED groups consumed 28 g walnuts/d and the low-meat green-MED group further consumed green tea (800 mL/d) and Mankai (100 g green shake/d). In a complementary animal experiment, after 44 d of an iron deficiency anemia-inducing diet, 50 female rats (age = 3 wk; Sprague Dawley strain) were randomly assigned into: iron-deficient diet (vehicle), or vehicle + iso-iron: ferrous gluconate (FG) 14, Mankai 50, and Mankai 80 versions (1.7 mg · kg-1 · d-1 elemental iron), or FG9.5 and Mankai 50-C version (1.15 mg · kg-1 · d-1 elemental iron). The specific primary aim for both studies was changes in iron homeostasis parameters. RESULTS After 6 mo of intervention, iron status trajectory did not differ between the PA and PA + MED groups. Hemoglobin modestly increased in the PA + green-MED group (0.23 g/dL) compared with PA (-0.1 g/dL; P < 0.001) and PA + MED (-0.1 g/dL; P < 0.001). Serum iron and serum transferrin saturation increased in the PA + green-MED group compared with the PA group (8.21 μg/dL compared with -5.23 μg/dL and 2.39% compared with -1.15%, respectively; P < 0.05 for both comparisons), as did folic acid (P = 0.011). In rats, hemoglobin decreased from 15.7 to 9.4 mg/dL after 44 d of diet-induced anemia. After depletion treatment, the vehicle-treated group had a further decrease of 1.3 mg/dL, whereas hemoglobin concentrations in both FG and Mankai iso-iron treatments similarly rebounded (FG14: +10.8 mg/dL, Mankai 50: +6.4 mg/dL, Mankai 80: +7.3 mg/dL; FG9.5: +5.1 mg/dL, Mankai 50-C: +7.1 mg/dL; P < 0.05 for all vs. the vehicle group). CONCLUSIONS In humans, a green-MED low-meat diet does not impair iron homeostasis. In rats, iron derived from Mankai (a green-plant protein source) is bioavailable and efficient in reversal of anemia. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03020186.

Abstract
Background Information on the association between iron metabolism and dyslipidaemia in children is limited. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the iron metabolic status of children with different body mass index (BMI) and to examine the association between iron metabolism and dyslipidaemia risk. Method In total, 1866 children and adolescents aged 7–18 were enrolled in this study, including 912 boys and 954 girls. In this cross-sectional study, parameters for anthropometry, lipids and iron metabolism including transferrin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), ferritin and serum iron (SF) were evaluated. Data regarding demographic characteristics, diet, and physical activity were collected by self-reported questionnaires. Results The prevalence of dyslipidaemia and iron deficiency in children and adolescents increased based on BMI categories (both P < 0.05) and were 58.3 and 8.9% in subjects with obesity, respectively. The lowest SF and the highest ferritin levels were observed in subjects who were obese (both P < 0.001). Subjects with dyslipidaemia had lower SF, transferrin and sTfR levels by different BMI categories, and those who were obese had higher ferritin levels (all P < 0.05). Most importantly, higher concentrations of transferrin and sTfR were related to lower dyslipidaemia risk (OR for transferrin: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.33–0.71; OR for sTfR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.46–0.99). Conclusions A downward trend in SF level by BMI categories and the highest ferritin level in subjects with obesity suggested that iron storage was associated with BMI in children and adolescents. Moreover, an inverse relationship was observed between transferrin and sTfR concentrations and dyslipidaemia risk in children with different BMI.

Abstract
Fatty pancreas is a newly proposed condition which is characterized by fat deposition and steatosis in the pancreas followed by outcome of pancreatic and metabolic complications. It has been found to be correlated with many metabolic disorders and a variety of diseases. Fatty pancreas has been associated with obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, acute and chronic pancreatitis, and even pancreatic carcinoma. Therefore, fatty pancreas might not only be an early marker of glucose or lipid metabolism disorders or metabolic syndrome, but also be a predictor of poor outcome of pancreatic related diseases. At present, imaging examination is the main diagnostic method. However, there is currently still a lack of a unified terminology, diagnostic criteria, treatment consensus, and guidelines due to very limited knowledge on this condition. Here we discuss the pathophysiology, pathogenesis, clinical implications, diagnosis, and treatment of fatty pancreas, with an aim to improve the early intervention, treatment, and prognosis prediction of fatty pancreas related metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Iron is an essential nutrient that may exert toxic effects when it accumulates in tissues. Little is known regarding its effects on gonadal function. Both Fe2+ and Fe3+ could be released from iron deposition. We employed mouse nonluteinized granulosa cell for in vitro studies and human ovarian tissues for Prussian blue and immunohistochemical staining to identify the iron deposition and effect in vivo. After treatment with FeSO4-7H2O or FeCl3 in granulosa cell cultured with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) for 48 h, we found that Fe2+ significantly suppressed FSH-induced granulosa cell proliferation and arrested the cell cycle at the G2/M phase by cell proliferation assay and flow cytometry. Fe2+ significantly increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ferritin levels of mouse granulosa cells. The increases in p21 and p53 messenger RNA and protein expression facilitated by Fe2+ treatment in mouse granulosa cells were significantly suppressed by separate treatments with p53 small interfering RNA and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitors. An ROS inhibitor downregulated Fe2+-induced increases in p38MAPK expression in mouse granulosa cells. Quantitative analysis of immunohistochemical staining revealed that human ovarian tissue sections with positive Prussian blue staining had lower levels of proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression, but higher levels of p21, p53, and CDC25C expression than those with negative Prussian blue staining. Conclusively, Fe2+ could directly arrest the cell cycle and inhibit granulosa cell proliferation by regulating the ROS-mediated p38MAPK/p53/p21 pathway. Therefore, iron can directly affect female gonadal function.

Abstract
With the increasing prevalence of obesity, the interest of research in nonalcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD) has grown. Even though the pancreas appears more susceptible to lipid accumulation compared with the liver, NAFPD has been less investigated due to the limits in detecting techniques. Several definitions and synonyms for NAFPD are used by authors and can be misleading. This, together with differences in methodology and ethnicity, make the integration and comparison of studies on this topic challenging. NAFPD could be used as an early indicator of ectopic fat deposition, which is recognized as a key factor of obesity cardio-metabolic complications. However, evidence that NAFPD has a pathogenetic role in type 2 diabetes is also emerging. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on the clinical and pathophysiologic relevance of NAFPD in β-cell function and insulin resistance.

Abstract
PURPOSE Increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) is commonly associated with obesity, and its role in the pathogenesis of obesity-related glucometabolic abnormalities is uncertain. We aimed to explore the relationships of PTH with glucose/insulin homeostasis parameters before and after bariatric surgery-induced weight loss, and whether they depend or not on 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) status. METHODS We included 42 subjects (27 women, aged 40 ± 5 years, BMI 48.5 ± 7.3 kg/m2) without diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or hyperparathyroidism undergoing sleeve gastrectomy. The following parameters were evaluated before and 6 months after surgery: circulating levels of PTH, calcium, phosphorus, 25OHD, leptin, insulin growth factor (IGF)-1; 75-g oral glucose tolerance test to derive measures of insulin sensitivity (ISI) and secretion (Stumvoll index); dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to assess fat distribution and bone mineral density. RESULTS Weight loss was accompanied by significant reduction of PTH levels (77.9 ± 19.1 vs. 60.5 ± 13.4 pg/ml; p = 0.005), without concomitant modification of 25OHD status. Both baseline PTH and its postoperative percent change resulted associated, with baseline fat mass (β = 0.615, p = 0.003) and its concurrent postoperative reduction (r = 0.419; p = 0.006), but neither with glucose homeostasis parameters nor their respective variations after weight loss. Interestingly, leptin reduction after weight loss was independently related to PTH change (β = 0.396, p = 0.015) and IGF-1 levels (β = 0.176, p = 0.059). CONCLUSIONS Circulating PTH decreases with fat mass reduction independent of 25OHD status, but it is not associated with improvement of insulin resistance and related metabolic parameters. Leptin and PTH may mediate the cross-talk between adipose tissue and parathyroid glands, which possibly contributes to bone adaptation to excess body weight.

Abstract
Obesity, defined as excess fat mass, increases risks for multiple chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and several types of cancer. Beyond adiposity per se, the pattern of fat distribution, android or truncal as compared to gynoid or peripheral, has a profound influence on systemic metabolism and hence risk for obesity complications. Not only factors as genetics, environment, gender, and age account for the apparent compartmentalization of white adipose tissue (WAT) in the body. Indeed, the heterogeneity among different anatomical depots also appears to stem from their intrinsic diversity, including cellular developmental origin, proliferative capacity, glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, cytokine pattern, thermogenic ability, and vascularization. Under the obese condition, these depot-specific differences translate into specific WAT distribution patterns, giving rise to different cardiometabolic consequences. This review summarizes the clinical and mechanistic evidence for the depot-specific differences and the phenotypic characteristics of different WAT depots that link their depot-specific biology to obesity-specific complications.

Abstract
Presence of fat in the pancreas increases the risk of metabolic co-morbidities. Detection and quantification of pancreatic fat is not a routine clinical practice, at least in part because of need to use expensive imaging techniques. We aimed to systematically review common markers of pancreatic fat in blood and to investigate differences in these markers associated with fatty pancreas. The search was conducted in 3 databases (EMBASE, Scopus, and MEDLINE). Studies in humans were eligible for inclusion if they reported on biological markers and percentage of pancreatic fat or fatty pancreas prevalence. Data were pooled for correlation and effect size meta-analysis. A total of 17 studies including 11 967 individuals were eligible for meta-analysis. Markers of lipid metabolism, including circulating triglycerides (r = 0.38 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.31, 0.46]) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = -0.33 [95% CI -0.35, -0.31]), and markers of glucose metabolism, including glycated haemoglobin (r = 0.39 [95% CI 0.30, 0.48], insulin (r = 0.38 [95% CI 0.33, 0.43]), and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (r = 0.37 [95% CI 0.30, 0.44], yielded the best correlations with percentage of pancreatic fat. Further, effect size analysis showed large and medium effects for the above markers of lipid and glucose metabolism. Circulating levels of triglycerides and glycated haemoglobin appear to be the best currently available markers of pancreatic fat. The approach of non-invasive and accurate detection of pancreatic fat by blood analysis should be further explored in the future, by investigating other potential biological markers of pancreatic fat.

Abstract
The glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) axis has emerged as a major therapeutic target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and, recently, of obesity. The insulinotropic activity of the native incretin hormone GLP-1(7-36)amide, which is mainly exerted through a unique G protein-coupled receptor (GLP-1R), is terminated via enzymatic cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase-IV that generates a C-terminal GLP-1 metabolite GLP-1(9-36)amide, the major circulating form in plasma. GLP-1(28-36)amide and GLP-1(32-36)amide are further cleavage products derived from GLP-1(7-36)amide and GLP-1(9-36)amide by the action of a neutral endopeptidase known as neprilysin. Until recently, GLP-1-derived metabolites were generally considered metabolically inactive. However, emerging evidence indicates that GLP-1 byproducts have insulinomimetic activities that may contribute to the pleiotropic effects of GLP-1 independently of the canonical GLP-1R. The recent studies reporting the beneficial effects of the administration of these metabolites in vivo and in vitro are the focus of this review. Collectively, these results suggest that GLP-1 metabolites inhibit hepatic glucose production, exert antioxidant cardio- and neuroprotective actions, reduce oxidative stress in vasculature and have both anti-apoptotic and proliferative effects in pancreatic β-cells, putatively by the modulation of mitochondrial functions. These findings have implication in energy homeostasis, obesity and its associated metabolic and cardiovascular complications as well as incretin-based therapies for the treatment of diabetes and obesity.

Abstract
We investigated miR21 expression in omental (OAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from 16 obese subjects undergoing bariatric surgery. Patients were divided into two age- and BMI-matched groups according to the presence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). miR21 was not differently expressed in OAT and SAT. However, miR21 expression was two folds greater in adipose tissue in patients with T2D. Accordingly, in primary cultures of adipocytes from non diabetic overweight subjects, miR21 expression increased after 24-h exposure to high glucose and insulin. In conclusion, miR21 appears linked to insulin-resistance deterioration within its pathophysiologic progression from obesity to T2D.

Abstract
Background Serum ferritin levels increase in postmenopausal women, and they are reported to be linked to major health problems. Here, we investigated the association between serum ferritin levels and insulin resistance (IR) in postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 6632 healthy Korean women (4357 premenopausal and 2275 postmenopausal) who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2007–2010 were enrolled in the study. Serum ferritin values were divided into six groups for the premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. IR and obesity indices were evaluated according to the six serum ferritin groups. Statistical analysis was carried out using SAS software, version 9.2 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Results The association between the IR indices and ferritin groups had a higher level of statistical significance in the postmenopausal group than in the premenopausal group. In addition, for the postmenopausal group, the estimates increased significantly in the sixth ferritin group compared to those in the first ferritin group. However, the association between the obesity indices and ferritin levels was not significantly different between the premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. Conclusion Elevated serum ferritin levels were associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
The clinical utility of serum ferritin as a biomarker of disease severity and prognosis in Gaucher disease (GD) is still debated. Here, we aimed to evaluate ferritin and its relation to clinicolaboratory parameters of GD patients seen at the Reference Center for Gaucher Disease of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, so as to gather evidence on the utility of ferritin as a biomarker of this condition. A retrospective chart review was performed collecting pre-and posttreatment data from GD patients. Eighteen patients with ferritin levels available before and after treatment were included in the study. Nine of these participants were males, and seventeen had type I GD. All patients were given either enzyme replacement (n = 16) or substrate reduction therapy (n = 2), and ferritin was found to decrease from 756 [318-1441] ng/mL at baseline to 521 [227-626] ng/mL (p=0.025) after 28.8 month soft treatment. Serum ferritin levels did not correlate with measures of disease severity, but showed an association with age at onset of treatment (ρ= 0.880; n = 18; p < 0.001). In conclusion, although serum ferritin did not correlate with disease severity, after a median 28.8 months of treatment, clinical outcomes had clearly improved, and ferritin levels had decreased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Serum ferritin levels are significantly increased after menopause and greatly affect women's health. The aim of this study was to investigate the dietary and non-dietary factors associated with high ferritin levels in postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS/METHODS Among adult women in 2010-2012, qualified postmenopausal women (n = 3880) were separated into quartiles of serum ferritin. The variable differences among the quartiles of ferritin were determined using either procsurvey chi-square test (χ2-test) among categorical variables, or GLM (Generalized Linear Model) among continuous variables. The odds ratio for high ferritin in relation to dietary factors was also determined using procsurvery logistic analysis. RESULTS Age, obesity, drinking habit, and blood glucose levels were found to be significant indicators of high serum ferritin level after adjusting for all confounding factors. Among the food groups, grain, milk, vegetable, and seaweed intakes were significantly associated with high ferritin levels, but after adjusting for all confounding factors, only grains and vegetables remained significant factors. Among the nutrient groups, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C intake were significant factors, but after adjustment, none of the nutrient groups analyzed were associated with a high risk of ferritin. CONCLUSION Age, obesity, drinking habit, and glucose levels, as well as inadequate intakes of grains and vegetables, were found to be significantly associated with high serum ferritin levels in postmenopausal Korean women.
