The impact of acute and chronic resistance training on appetite and energy intake: A scoping review examining resistance exercise and comparisons with other exercise modalities

PURPOSE

The effects of exercise on appetite have recently been systematically evaluated with a focus on endurance training (ET). However, resistance training (RT) may induce different adaptations than ET. This scoping review aimed to examine the acute and chronic effects of isolated RT and comparisons with other exercise modalities on appetite-related variables and energy intake.

RESULTS

17 acute studies were identified, six examining isolated RT, while 11 focused on RT intensity, amount of exercise, targeted muscle groups, or comparison with ET and combined training (RT plus ET; CT). Nine chronic studies were identified. Three investigated isolated RT vs control and six manipulated the amount of RT exercise, types of RT, or comparison with ET and CT.

CONCLUSIONS

Acute RT compared to control conditions appears to induce responses favoring appetite inhibition. While the amount of RT exercise may acutely play a role in the suppression of appetite, while ET seems to have more potential to suppress appetite. Chronic RT does not seem to stimulate compensatory mechanisms; however, there is not clear evidence regarding the role of RT intensity or other exercise modalities. Chronic ET and CT may be more prone to favor appetite inhibition than RT. More comprehensive evaluations including the exploration of multiple appetite-related factors are needed for future studies.

Central and peripheral leptin and agouti-related protein during and after pregnancy in relation to weight change

OBJECTIVE

To study changes of neuropeptides and adipokines in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum from pregnancy to postpregnancy in relation to weight changes, fat mass and glucose metabolism.

CONTEXT

With high postpartum weight retention being a risk factor in future pregnancies and of lifelong obesity, we evaluated neuropeptide and adipokine changes in women who either gained weight or were weight stable.

DESIGN

Women were followed for 5 ± 1 years after pregnancy and divided into two groups, weight stable and weight gain, by weight change from start of pregnancy.

PATIENTS

Twenty-five women (BMI 27 ± 5 kg/m² ) recruited at admission for elective caesarean section.

MEASUREMENTS

CSF and serum levels of agouti-related protein (AgRP), leptin and insulin, and serum levels of adiponectin and soluble leptin receptor were measured during and after pregnancy. These measurements were further related to fat mass and insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR).

RESULTS

S-AgRP levels during pregnancy were lower in the weight stable group and a 1 unit increase in s-AgRP was associated with 24% higher odds of pertaining to the weight gain group. After pregnancy, s-AgRP increased in the weight stable group but decreased in the weight gain group. Decreased transport of leptin into CSF during pregnancy was reversed by an increased CSF:serum leptin ratio after pregnancy. In women who returned to their prepregnancy weight, serum adiponectin increased after pregnancy and correlated negatively with HOMA-IR.

CONCLUSION

S-AgRP concentration in late pregnancy may be one factor predicting weight change after pregnancy, and circulating AgRP may be physiologically important in the long-term regulation of body weight.

Physical activity and the endocannabinoid system: an overview

Recognized as a "disease modifier", physical activity (PA) is increasingly viewed as a more holistic, cost-saving method for prevention, treatment and management of human disease conditions. The traditional view that PA engages the monoaminergic and endorphinergic systems has been challenged by the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), composed of endogenous lipids, their target receptors, and metabolic enzymes. Indeed, direct and indirect evidence suggests that the ECS might mediate some of the PA-triggered effects throughout the body. Moreover, it is now emerging that PA itself is able to modulate ECS in different ways. Against this background, in the present review we shall discuss evidence of the cross-talk between PA and the ECS, ranging from brain to peripheral districts and highlighting how ECS must be tightly regulated during PA, in order to maintain its beneficial effects on cognition, mood, and nociception, while avoiding impaired energy metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammatory processes.

Aerobic training (AT) is more effective than aerobic plus resistance training (AT+RT) to improve anorexigenic/orexigenic factors in obese adolescents

BACKGROUND

The regulation of energy balance is influenced by physical exercise. Although some studies show a stimulation of hormones related to food intake, others show that exercise provides satiety.

AIM

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic training (AT) and aerobic plus resistance training (AT+RT) on anorexigenic and orexigenic factors in obese adolescents undergoing interdisciplinary weight loss therapy.

METHODS

A total of 26 obese adolescents, aged 15-19 years with BMI≥P95 were submitted to 12 months of interdisciplinary intervention (clinical support, nutrition, psychology and physical exercise) and divided into two groups, aerobic training (AT) (n=13) or aerobic plus resistance training (AT+RT) (n=13), which were matched according to gender and body mass. Blood samples were collected to analyze orexigenic factors (AgRP, NPY, MCH) and the anorexigenic factor alpha-MSH.

RESULTS

The AT and AT+RT groups significantly reduced body mass, body mass index and body fat mass (kg) during the therapy. The AT group showed no significant changes in body lean mass (kg), whereas the AT+RT group showed an increase in body lean mass (kg) during the interdisciplinary intervention. There was an increase in AgRP levels (ng/ml) only in the AT+RT group after 6 months of interdisciplinary intervention compared with baseline condition. Conversely, α-MSH levels (ng/ml) increased only in the AT group after 12 months of interdisciplinary intervention compared with baseline condition.

CONCLUSION

Aerobic training (AT) as part of an interdisciplinary therapy is more effective than aerobic plus resistance training (AT+RT) to improve secretion of anorexigenic/orexigenic factors in obese adolescents.

Effects of prolonged exercise on agouti-related protein: a pilot study

Agouti-related protein (AgRP), is a signaling peptide that affects feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, and has also been shown to stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 90 min of treadmill exercise on circulating AgRP concentrations and the relationship of AgRP responses to cortisol. Seven young males completed a preliminary trial followed by counterbalanced experimental and control trials 4-5 weeks apart. The experimental trial began 2.5 h after consumption of a standard nutrient beverage and consisted of treadmill exercise at 60 % of previously determined VO(2max) for 90 min. Blood samples were collected before (-30 and 0 min), during (18, 36, 54, 72, and 90 min), and following exercise (20, 40, and 60 min). Blood samples were collected in a resting, control trial at the same time points as the experimental trial. Plasma lactate was significantly higher in the exercise than the control trial. Although AgRP increased from 18 min of exercise to peak at 90 min, these increases were not significantly different than values in the control trial. Cortisol responses during the exercise trial were significantly higher than the control trial. AgRP concentrations during early exercise were positively correlated with cortisol levels later in recovery. The obtained data suggest that AgRP concentrations during prolonged steady-state exercise are associated with subsequent cortisol increases, but further study is required to determine whether there is a causal effect.

A single session of circuit-resistance exercise effects on human peripheral blood lymphocyte ABCA1 expression and plasma HDL-C level

ATP-binding cassette transporters transfer a variety of substrates across the lipid bilayers in an energy-dependent manner. ABCA1 is a member of this family which plays a crucial role in plasma HDL-C metabolism. The purpose of this study was to investigate ABCA1 expression in lymphocytes, plasma lipids and lipoprotein levels in response to a single session of circuit-resistance exercise. Twenty female students volunteered and randomly assigned to control, 40%, 60%, 80% one-repetition maximum groups. Subjects performed a single session of CRE (9 exercises, 25s per exercise, 3 sets of 3 non-stop circuits, and 1 min rest between the sets). Blood mononuclear cells were isolated for ABCA1 mRNA expression. Plasma glucose, lipids and lipoprotein concentrations were measured. Lymphocyte ABAC1 mRNA expression was significantly (P < 0.001) increased in all given exercise intensities. Total WBC, lymphocyte, neutrophil, platelet counts, plasma glucose, and triglyceride concentrations were also significantly increased after exercise. Changes in plasma HDL-C, LDL-C and TC, concentrations were not significant. In conclusion, a single session of CRE increased PBL ABCA1 expression that was more pronounced in 60% and 40% 1RM groups but not accompanied with significant changes in HDL-C concentrations. Thus, CRE with moderate intensities provide bigger increases of PLB ABCA1 expression not plasma HDL-C levels.

Acute circuit-resistance exercise increases expression of lymphocyte agouti-related protein in young women

Exercise-induced leukocytosis and lymphocytosis is accompanied by up-regulation and down-regulation of hundreds of genes in white blood cells (WBCs). Agouti-related protein (AgRP) is an orexigenic peptide secreted predominantly from the arcuate nucleus in the hypothalamus. AgRP affects feeding behavior and plays a role in energy and glucose homeostasis and adiposity. The purpose of the study was to determine effects of circuit resistance exercise (CRE) (9 exercises, 25 s per exercise) at different intensities on peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) AgRP mRNA expression and its concentrations in lymphocytes and plasma. Twenty-five young female college students were randomly divided into five groups: control, 40% 1-repetition maximum (1-RM), 60% 1-RM, 80% 1-RM and combined (40 + 60 + 80% 1-RM) loads. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated by a lymphocyte density gradient centrifugation method for AgRP mRNA expression. Lymphocyte ATP, glycogen, AgRP, growth hormone (GH), and plasma AgRP, GH and glucose concentrations were measured. CRE increased AgRP mRNA lymphocyte expression significantly ( P < 0.0001) at all intensities. A higher and significant ( P < 0.01) increase was found in the 60% 1-RM group when compared with the other groups. The CRE-induced lymphocyte AgRP expression was accompanied by elevations in plasma AgRP, glucose and GH levels as well as higher WBCs, lymphocytes and neutrophil counts. Lymphocyte AgRP and GH concentrations were significantly reduced ( P < 0.05). Lymphocyte ATP content was unchanged and glycogen was reduced in the combined group but not in the other groups. Data indicate that AgRP mRNA is expressed in PBLs and that CRE increases its expression. Data also reveal that the expression of AgRP was accompanied with higher plasma AgRP and GH concentrations. Findings suggest that AgRP may provide an important signal in the immune environment and that the lymphocyte may be considered as an extra-hypothalamic source of plasma AgRP following exercise stress.

Treadmill training enhances rat agouti-related protein in plasma and reduces ghrelin levels in plasma and soleus muscle

Ghrelin and agouti-related protein (AgRP) are orexigenic peptides secreted from stomach mucosa and the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, respectively. Both peptides affect feeding behavior and play a role in energy balance, glucose homeostasis, and adiposity. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effects of moderate-term (6 weeks) running regimen on resting levels of ghrelin, AgRP, adenosine triphosphate, and glycogen in soleus muscle as well as plasma concentrations of the orexigenic hormones. Eighteen adult Wistar male rats (12 weeks old, 235-255 g) were randomly assigned to training (n = 10) and control (n = 8) groups. The training group ran for 60 min/d, 5d/wk at 25 m/min and 0% grade for 6 weeks. Forty-eight hours after the last exercise session, rats were killed; and soleus muscle and plasma were collected and frozen in liquid nitrogen for later analysis. Results demonstrated that 6 weeks of treadmill exercise reduced ghrelin and increased AgRP levels in plasma. Trained rat soleus muscle had higher levels of glycogen but not adenosine triphosphate or AgRP compared with untrained controls. Data indicate that training lowers ghrelin levels in rat soleus and plasma, which is accompanied by higher plasma AgRP and soleus glycogen content.

A single circuit-resistance exercise has no effect on plasma obestatin levels in female college students

Obestatin is a 23 amino acid peptide recently isolated from rat stomach that is encoded by the same gene as ghrelin. Obestatin has opposite action to ghrelin on food intake and plays a role in energy balance. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a circuit-resistance exercise (9 exercises, 25s per exercise, at 40, 60, 80% of 1RM) at different intensities on plasma obestatin and growth hormone (GH). Twenty volunteer females were randomly divided into four; 40, 60, 80%, combined (40+80+80%) loads groups (COL). Blood samples were collected before and immediately following the exercise protocol. Changes in plasma obestatin levels were not significant within and between groups. Plasma GH concentrations were significantly higher in high and COL groups, respectively. The data indicate that although circuit-resistance exercise resulted in a significant change in GH levels, it had no effect on plasma obestatin levels.
