Abstract
The impact of emerging stressors, such as pesticides and heavy metals, on the nutritional quality, resistance, and antioxidant systems of crops is the subject of intense monitoring. Due to its low toxicity and biocompatibility, nano-selenium (nano-Se) increases antioxidant capacity more effectively than selenium (Se). However, the protective mechanism of nano-Se in plum trees is still unknown when subjected to long-term abiotic stress. In this study, nano-Se foliar application enhanced the fruit's fresh weight and diameter and plant growth and development by increasing the content of trace elements (Zn and Se) and amino acids (Try, Phe, Pro, and Arg) in leaves and fruits. Compared to the control, nano-Se treatment dramatically improved the plant's antioxidant system, resulting in a substantial increase in SOD (44.3 %), POD (24.3 %), and CAT (95.6 %) levels. It also increased IAA (118.8 %), total flavonoids (23.0 %), total phenols (15.8 %), rutin (37.7 %), quercetin (146.8 %), and caffeic acid (19.8 %) contents by regulating phenylpropane metabolic pathways. Targeted amino acid analysis indicated that nano-Se biofortification greatly enhanced the levels of His (60.7 %), Ser (123.5 %), Thr (105.7 %), Val (202.1 %), Ile (236.2 %), Leu (84.0 %), Tyr (235.0 %), and Phe (164.7 %). The non-target metabolomics results showed that nano-Se treatment stimulated plum growth and nutrition by boosting phenylpropane metabolism and amino acid production. Therefore, nano-Se can improve the quality and resistance of plums by regulating both the primary and secondary metabolic pathways of plants and enhancing the antioxidant capacity. This investigation provides a reference for extrapolating the positive effects of nano-Se on crop quality to other plant species.

Abstract
Introduction Selenium (Se) plays a vital role in various physiological processes in plants and is regarded as an essential micronutrient for human health as well. Methods In this study, sodium selenite solution at 10, 40, 70, and 100 mg·L-1 concentrations was foliar sprayed, and the strawberry plant growth, antioxidant system, and fruit quality with an emphasis on sugar and acid content were assessed. Results The results showed that 10 mg·L-1 of sodium selenite treatment promoted plant growth, while all the treated concentrations could enhance photosynthesis, the antioxidant system in leaves, the content of Se, and ascorbic acid in fruits. More importantly, 40 mg·L-1 sodium selenite treatment significantly increased fruit weight, total soluble solid, total phenolic content, and anthocyanins, as well as improved the shape index. Furthermore, it decreased the total flavonoid and proanthocyanidin content. Particularly, sodium selenite treatment at 40 and 70 mg·L-1 largely increased the ratio of soluble sugars to titratable acid. The changes of predominant sugars and organic acids during fruit development were further investigated. The sucrose, fructose, and glucose content was upregulated by sodium selenite treatment through upregulating the activities of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and acid invertase, as well as the FaSPS expression. In addition, sodium selenite treatment inhibited the activity of citrate synthase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, rather than modulating their transcript levels to reduce the citric acid content. Conclusions This work presented a potentially efficient approach to enhance plant growth and fruit quality and supplement Se in strawberry, providing insights into the mechanism of regulating sugar and acid metabolism by Se.

Abstract
The efficient use of pesticides has long been a topic of public concern, necessitating a thorough understanding of their movement in plants. This study investigates the translocation and distribution of penthiopyrad in pakchoi plants cultivated both in hydroponic and soil-cultivated conditions. Results indicate that penthiopyrad predominantly accumulates in the roots, with concentrations of 11.3-53.9 mg/kg following root application, and in the leaves, with concentrations of 2.0-17.1 mg/kg following foliar application. The bioconcentration factor exceeded 1, with values ranging from 1.2 to 23.9 for root application and 6.4 to 164.0 for foliar application, indicating a significant role in the absorption and accumulation processes. The translocation factor data, which were <1, suggest limited the translocations within pakchoi plants. The limitation may be attributed to the hydrophobic properties of penthiopyrad (log Kow = 3.86), as evidenced by its predominant distribution in the subcellular solid fractions of pakchoi tissues, accounting for 93.1% to 99.5% of the total proportion. Six metabolites (753-A-OH, M12, 754-T-DO, M11, PCA, and PAM) were identified in this study as being formed during this process. These findings provide valuable insights into the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of penthiopyrad in pakchoi.

Abstract
Combining nanoselenium (nano-Se) and melatonin (MT) was more effective than treatment alone against abiotic stress. However, their combined application mitigated the toxic effects of bensulfuron methyl, and enhanced wheat growth and metabolism has not been studied. Metabolomics and proteomics revealed that combining nano-Se and MT markedly activated phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways, elevating the flavonoid (quercetin by 33.5 and 39.8%) and phenolic acid (vanillic acid by 38.8 and 48.7%) levels in leaves and roots of wheat plants. Interstingly, beneficial rhizosphere bacteria in their combination increased (Oxalobacteraceae, Nocardioidaceae, and Xanthomonadaceae), which positively correlated with the enhancement of soil urease and fluorescein diacetate enzyme activity (27.0 and 26.9%) and the allelopathic substance levels. To summarize, nano-Se and MT mitigate the adverse effects of bensulfuron methyl by facilitating interactions between the phenylpropane metabolism of the plant and the beneficial microbial community. The findings provide a theoretical basis for using nano-Se and MT to remediate herbicide-contaminated soil.

Abstract
Recently, studies have shown that pesticides may have adverse effects on the flavor quality of the fruits, but there is still a lack of appropriate methods to repair the damage. This study investigated the effects and mechanism of applying the emerging material, nano‑selenium, and two fungicides (Boscalid and Pydiflumetofen) alone or together on the flavor quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberries. The results showed that the two fungicides had a negative impact on strawberry color, flavor, antioxidant capacity and different enzymatic systems. The color damage was mainly attributed to the impact on anthocyanin content. Nano‑selenium alleviated the quality losses by increasing sugar-acid ratio, volatiles, anthocyanin levels, enzyme activities and DPPH scavenging ability and reducing ROS levels. Results also showed that these damage and repair processes were related to the regulation of flavor and ripening related transcription factors (including FaRIF, FaSnRK1, FaMYB10, FaMYB1, FaSnRK2.6 and FaABI1), the upregulation of genes on sugar-acid, volatile, and anthocyanin synthesis pathways, as well as the increase of sucrose and ABA signaling molecules. In addition, the application of nano-Se supplemented the selenium content in fruits, and was harmless to human health. This information is crucial for revealing the mechanisms of flavor damage caused by pesticides to strawberry and the repaired of nano‑selenium, and broadens the researching and applying of nano‑selenium in repairing the damage caused by pesticides.

Abstract
Red pitaya, the representative tropical and subtropical fruit, is vulnerable to quality deterioration due to climate or agronomic measures. Nano-selenium (Nano-Se) has shown positive effects on crop biofortification in favour of reversing this situation. In this study, Se could be enriched efficiently in red pitayas via root and foliar application by Nano-Se, which induced higher phenolic acids (16.9-94.2%), total phenols (15.7%), total flavonoids (29.5%) and betacyanins (34.1%) accumulation in flesh. Richer antioxidative features including activities of SOD (25.2%), CAT (33.8%), POD (77.2%), and levels of AsA (25.7%) and DPPH (14.7%) were obtained in Nano-Se-treated pitayas as well as in their 4-8 days shelf-life. The non-targeted metabolomics indicated a boost in amino acids, resulting in the stimulation of phenylpropanoid and betalain biosynthesis. In conclusion, the mechanism of Nano-Se biofortification for red pitaya might be fortifying pigment, as well as the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant substances formation by regulating primary and secondary metabolism facilitated by Se accumulation.

Abstract
Plants are essential for life on earth, and agricultural crops are a primary food source for humans. For the One Health future, crop health is crucial for safe, high-quality agricultural products and the development of future green commodities. However, the overuse of pesticides in modern agriculture raises concerns about their adverse effects on crop resistance and product quality. Recently, biostimulants, including microecological bacteria agents and nanoparticles, have garnered worldwide interest for their ability to sustain plant health and enhance crop resistance. This review analyzed the effects and mechanisms of pesticide stress on crop health. It also investigated the regulation of biostimulants on crop health and the multiomics mechanism, combining research on nanoselenium activating various crop health aspects conducted by the authors' research group. The paper helps readers understand the impact of pesticides on crop health and the positive influence of various biostimulants, especially nanomaterials and small molecules, on crop health.

Abstract
Nanoselenium (nano-Se) or melatonin (MT) foliar spray reduces pesticide stress by stimulating plant secondary metabolism and antioxidant capacity. However, the effects of nano-Se and MT biofortification on the interaction between plant secondary metabolic pathways and rhizosphere microbes in mitigating 2,4-D butyrate stress remain unknown. Compared to nano-Se or MT treatment alone, nano-Se and MT combined application increased the antioxidant enzyme activities and decreased the MDA (25.0%) and H2O2 (39.3%) contents with 2,4-D butylate exposure. Importantly, they enhance the soil enzymes (S-FDA by 53.1%), allelochemicals (luteolin by 164.1% and tricin by 147.3%), as well as plant secondary metabolites (JA by 63.3% and 193.3% in leaves and roots) levels. It also improved the beneficial microbial abundance of Comamonadaceae, Sphingomonadaceae, and Rhodobacteraceae in the rhizosphere soil. In conclusion, nano-Se and MT alleviate 2,4-D butylate stress in wheat plants by enabling the interaction between rhizosphere microorganisms, allelopathic substances, and secondary metabolites.

Abstract
In recent years, it has been found that the flavor quality of tomato is continuously reduced compared with the original tomato varieties. Studies have found that nanomaterials can improve crop quality, but the differences and related mechanisms among different nanomaterials were not reported. In this study, nano-Se, nano-TiO2 and nano-CeO2 were spraying on tomato, and the effects of the three nanomaterials on the flavor quality and physiological and antioxidant properties of fruits were analyzed and compared. The results showed compared with nano-TiO2 and nano-CeO2, nano-Se showed more obvious positive effects. Nano-Se increased the size and weight of tomato fruits and the levels of soluble sugar, promoted the accumulation of photosynthetic pigment, decreased the content of titratable acid, and also changed the expression of related genes, finally making the fruit sweeter; it also promoted the accumulation of antioxidant substances and nutrients such as lycopene, ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, GSH, SOD and CAT and decreased the content of MDA, H2O2 and OFR thus improving the antioxidant performance of fruits; the contents of volatiles were also increased and the olfactory experience of tomato was improved. Nano-TiO2 and nano-CeO2 also improved the flavor quality and antioxidant properties of tomato, but the degree was lower than nano-Se. This experiment provided references for selecting more appropriate nanomaterials to improve tomato quality, and revealed the effects and mechanisms of different nanomaterials on tomato quality.

Abstract
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been widely used as light sources for plant production in plant factories with artificial lighting (PFALs), and light spectrum and light amount have great impacts on plant growth and development. With the expansion of the product list of PFALs, tomato production in PFALs has received attention, but studies on fruit quality influenced by artificial light are lacking. In this study, precisely modulated LED light sources based on white light combined with additional red, blue, and green lights were used to investigate the effects of light spectrum and daily light integral (DLI) on the main quality indicators and flavor substances of "Micro-Tom" tomato fruits. The highest sugar-acid ratio was obtained under the white light with addition of red light with high DLI and blue light with low DLI. The contents of β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein were significantly increased by higher DLI conditions except for under the blue light treatment, and the cross-interactions between the light spectrum and DLI were observed. The accumulation of the main flavor substances in tomato fruits was decreased by addition of green light with a high DLI and red light with a low DLI; notably, the percentage of 2-isobutylthiazole, which is associated with fresh tomato aroma, was decreased by green light. This study provides insights for improving tomato fruit quality and flavor by regulating light conditions in PFALs.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element for the human body, with the chemical and physical characteristics of both metals and nonmetals. Selenium has bioactivities related to the immune system, antioxidation, anti-virus, and anti-cancer. At the same time, it also plays a role in reducing and alleviating the toxicity of heavy metals. Compared with inorganic selenium, organic selenium is less toxic and has greater bioavailability. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have the advantages of high absorption rate, high biological activity, and low toxicity, and can be directly absorbed by the human body and converted to organic selenium. Selenium nanoparticles have gradually replaced the traditional selenium supplement and has broad prospects in the food and medical industries. In this paper, the chemical, physical, and biological methods for the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles are reviewed, and the microbial synthesis methods of selenium nanoparticles, the effects of selenium nanoparticles on crop growth, and the antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-tumor effects of selenium nanoparticles are also systematically summarized. In addition, we evaluate the application of selenium nanoparticles in selenium nutrition enhancement, providing support for the application of selenium nanoparticles in animals, plants, and humans.

Abstract
Tomato and cucumber are two vital edible vegetables that usually appear in people's daily diet. Penthiopyrad is a new type of amide chiral fungicide, which is often used for disease control of vegetables (including tomato and cucumber) due to its wide bactericidal spectrum, low toxicity, good penetration, and strong internal absorption. Extensive application of penthiopyrad may have caused potential pollution in the ecosystem. Different processing methods can remove pesticide residues from vegetables and protect human health. In this study, the penthiopyrad removal efficiency of soaking and peeling from tomatoes and cucumbers was evaluated under different conditions. Among different soaking methods, heated water soaking and water soaking with additives (NaCl, acetic acid, and surfactant) presented a more effective reduction ability than other treatments. Due to the specific physicochemical properties of tomatoes and cucumbers, the ultrasound enhances the removal rate of soaking for tomato samples and inhibits it for cucumber samples. Peeling can remove approximately 90% of penthiopyrad from contaminated tomato and cucumber samples. Enantioselectivity was found only during tomato sauce storage, which may be related to the complex microbial community. Health risk assessment data suggests that tomatoes and cucumbers are safer for consumers after soaking and peeling. The results may provide consumers with some useful information to choose better household processing methods to remove penthiopyrad residues from tomatoes, cucumbers, and other edible vegetables.
