Riboflavin-induced photo-ATRP electrochemical strategy for detection of biomarker trypsin

The detection of trypsin and its inhibitors is important for both clinical diagnosis and disease treatment. Abnormal trypsin activity affects pancreatic function and leads to corresponding pathological changes in the body. Therefore, the study presented a riboflavin-induced photo-ATRP electrochemical assay of trypsin activity and its inhibitor, including detection of trypsin activity in real urine samples. Experiments were performed on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes modified with sulfhydryl groups of 3-mercaptopropionic acid, and target trypsin-specific cleavage of BSA-Au nanocluster (BSA-Au NCs) was followed by the modification of Au NCs to the electrodes using Au-S. The Au NCs immobilized monodeoxy-monomercapto-β-cyclodextrin@adamantan-2-amine (SH-β-CD@2-NH2-Ada) host-guest inclusion complexes to the electrode surfaces via Au-S. In a two-component photo-initiator system consisting of riboflavin as an initiator and ascorbic acid (AA) as a mild reducing agent under mild blue light radiation, a large number of electroactive substances were grafted onto the electrode surface to generate electrochemical signals. In addition, we have successfully realized the detection of clinical drug inhibitors of trypsin. The detection limit of the system is as low as 0.0024 ng/mL, which much littler than the average standard of trypsin in the patient's urine or serum. It's worth noting that this work will provide researchers with a different route to design electrochemical sensors based on non-covalent recognition strategies.

Aqueous photo-RAFT polymerization under ambient conditions: synthesis of protein-polymer hybrids in open air

A photoinduced reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (photo-RAFT) polymerization technique in the presence of sodium pyruvate (SP) and pyruvic acid derivatives was developed. Depending on the wavelength of light used, SP acted as a biocompatible photoinitiator or promoter for polymerization, allowing rapid open-to-air polymerization in aqueous media. Under UV irradiation (370 nm), SP decomposes to generate CO2 and radicals, initiating polymerization. Under blue (450 nm) or green (525 nm) irradiation, SP enhances the polymerization rate via interaction with the excited state RAFT agent. This method enabled the polymerization of a range of hydrophilic monomers in reaction volumes up to 250 mL, eliminating the need to remove radical inhibitors from the monomers. In addition, photo-RAFT polymerization using SP allowed for the facile synthesis of protein-polymer hybrids in short reaction times (<1 h), low organic content (≤16%), and without rigorous deoxygenation and the use of transition metal photocatalysts. Enzymatic studies of a model protein (chymotrypsin) showed that despite a significant loss of protein activity after conjugation with RAFT chain transfer agents, the grafting polymers from proteins resulted in a 3-4-fold recovery of protein activity.

UV-Permeable 3D Li Anodes for In Situ Fabrication of Interface-Gapless Flexible Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Flexible solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) are highly desirable for future wearable electronics because of their high energy density and safety. However, flexible SSLMBs face serious challenges not only in regulating the Li plating/stripping behaviors but also in enabling the mechanical flexibility of the cell. Both challenges are largely associated with the interfacial gaps between the solid electrolytes and the electrodes. Here, a UV-permeable and flexible composited Li metal anode (UVp-Li), which possesses a unique light-penetrating interwoven structure similar to textiles is reported. UVp-Li allows one-step bonding of the cathode, anode, and solid electrolyte via an in situ UV-initiated polymerization method to achieve the gapless SSLMBs. The gapless structure not only effectively stabilizes the plating/stripping of Li metal during cycling, but also ensures the integrity of the cell during mechanical bending. UVp-Li symmetric cell presents a stable cycling over 1000 h at 0.5 mA cm-2. LiFePO4||UVp-Li full cells (areal capacity ranging from 0.5 to 3 mAh cm-2) show outstanding capacity retention of over 84% after 500 charge/discharge cycles at room temperature. Large pouch cells using high-loading cathodes maintain stable electrochemical performance during 1000 times of dynamic bending.

Highly efficient dual photoredox/copper catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization achieved through mechanism-driven photocatalyst design

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with dual photoredox/copper catalysis combines the advantages of photo-ATRP and photoredox-mediated ATRP, utilizing visible light and ensuring broad monomer scope and solvent compatibility while minimizing side reactions. Despite its popularity, challenges include high photocatalyst (PC) loadings (10 to 1000 ppm), requiring additional purification and increasing costs. In this study, we discover a PC that functions at the sub-ppm level for ATRP through mechanism-driven PC design. Through studying polymerization mechanisms, we find that the efficient polymerizations are driven by PCs whose ground state oxidation potential-responsible for PC regeneration-play a more important role than their excited state reducing power, responsible for initiation. This is verified by screening PCs with varying redox potentials and triplet excited state generation capabilities. Based on these findings, we identify a highly efficient PC, 4DCDP-IPN, featuring moderate excited state reducing power and a maximized ground state oxidation potential. Employing this PC at 50 ppb, we synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate) with high conversion, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high chain-end fidelity. This system exhibits oxygen tolerance and supports large-scale reactions under ambient conditions. Our findings, driven by the systematic PC design, offer meaningful insights for controlled radical polymerizations and metallaphotoredox-mediated syntheses beyond ATRP.

The Development of Visible-Light Organic Photocatalysts for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization via Conjugation Extension

This work aimed to develop organic photocatalysts (PCs) that could mediate organocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) under visible light. Through the core-modification of known chromophoric structures and ring-locking to reach a conjugation extension, annulated N-aryl benzo[kl]acridines were identified as effective visible light-responsive photocatalysts. The corresponding selenium-doped structure showed excellent performance in the O-ATRP of methacrylates, which could afford polymer products with controlled molecular weights and low dispersities under the irradiation of visible light at a 100 ppm catalyst loading.

Unlocking the Potential of Polythioesters

As the demand for sustainable polymers increases, most research efforts have focused on polyesters, which can be bioderived and biodegradable. Yet analogous polythioesters, where one of the oxygen atoms has been replaced by a sulfur atom, remain a relatively untapped source of potential. The incorporation of sulfur allows the polymer to exhibit a wide range of favorable properties, such as thermal resistance, degradability, and high refractive index. Polythioester synthesis represents a frontier in research, holding the promise of paving the way for eco-friendly alternatives to conventional polyesters. Moreover, polythioester research can also open avenues to the development of sustainable and recyclable materials. In the last 25 years, many methods to synthesize polythioesters have been developed. However, to date no industrial synthesis of polythioesters has been developed due to challenges of costs, yields, and the toxicity of the by-products. This review will summarize the recent advances in polythioester synthesis, covering step-growth polymerization, ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and biosynthesis. Crucially, the benefits and challenges of the processes will be highlighted, paying particular attention to their sustainability, with the aim of encouraging further exploration and research into the fast-growing field of polythioesters.

Nucleic Acid-Binding Dyes as Versatile Photocatalysts for Atom-Transfer Radical Polymerization

Nucleic acid-binding dyes (NuABDs) are fluorogenic probes that light up after binding to nucleic acids. Taking advantage of their fluorogenicity, NuABDs have been widely utilized in the fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology for diagnostic and analytical applications. We demonstrate the potential of NuABDs together with an appropriate nucleic acid scaffold as an intriguing photocatalyst for precisely controlled atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Additionally, we systematically investigated the thermodynamic and electrochemical properties of the dyes, providing insights into the mechanism that drives the photopolymerization. The versatility of the NuABD-based platform was also demonstrated through successful polymerizations using several NuABDs in conjunction with diverse nucleic acid scaffolds, such as G-quadruplex DNA or DNA nanoflowers. This study not only extends the horizons of controlled photopolymerization but also broadens opportunities for nucleic acid-based materials and technologies, including nucleic acid-polymer biohybrids and stimuli-responsive ATRP platforms.

Designing Ionic Ir(III) Cyclometalated Complexes as Photocatalysts for Light Assisted ATRP of MMA. A Combined Experimental and Mechanistic Study

A new family of ionic Ir(III) cyclometalated complexes with general formula [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br], was designed and prepared to be assessed as photocalysts for the visible light assisted ATRP polymerization of MMA. To this purpose, our design strategy involved both: i) the decoration of the cyclometalating (CN) and the ancillary (NN) ligands with various electron withdrawing and/or electron donor substituents and, ii) the use of Br- as the counter anion for these cationic Ir(III) species. After an extensive screening in which the [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br]-type compounds were compared to the model neutral complex fac-[Ir(ppy)3], the "fully" amino-substituted ion pairs abbreviated as [10][Br] and [11][Br], exhibited the best photocatalytic performances under irradiation with CFL lamps. It is worth noting that the outcomes of transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) experiments combined with theoretical DFT calculations, enlightened the role played by the Ir(III) complexes in the mechanism of the photoATRP process, and suggested the rationalization of the different performances that were highlighted by our Ir(III) catalyst in the visible light assisted photopolymerization of MMA.

Antimony-Based Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles as Lead-Free Photocatalysts for Controlled Radical Polymerization

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as versatile photocatalysts to convert solar energy for chemical processes. Perovskite photocatalyzed polymerization draws special attention due to its straightforward synthesis process and the ability to create advanced perovskite-polymer nanocomposites. Herein, this work employs Cs3Sb2Br9 perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) as a lead-free photocatalyst for light-controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs exhibit high reduction potential and interact with electronegative bromide initiator with Lewis acid Sb sites, enabling efficient photoinduced reduction of initiators and controlled polymerization under blue light irradiation. Methacrylate monomers with various functional groups are successfully polymerized, and the resulting polymer showcased a dispersity (Đ) as small as 1.27. The living nature of polymerization is confirmed by high chain end fidelity and kinetic studies. Moreover, Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs serve as heterogeneous photocatalysts, demonstrating recyclability and reusability for up to four cycles. This work presents a promising approach to overcome the limitations of lead-based perovskites in photoinduced controlled radical polymerization, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative for the synthesis of well-defined polymeric materials.

Shear thickening fluid (STF) in engineering applications and the potential of cork in STF-based composites

Shear thickening fluids (STFs) are a unique type of fluids that can quickly transform into a solid-like state when subjected to forces (rate dependent). These fluids are created by dispersing micro and nanoparticles within a medium. When the force is removed, they return to their original liquid state. Shear thickening fluids can absorb a significant amount of impact energy, making them useful for reducing vibrations and serving as a damper. This study provides a comprehensive and brief overview of existing literature on shear thickening fluids, including their properties, classification, and the rheological mechanisms behind the shear thickening behaviour. It also examines the use of these fluids in various applications, such as improving resistance to stabs and spikes, protecting against low- and high-velocity impacts, and as a new medium for energy dissipation in industries such as battery safety, vibration control and adaptive structures. Lastly, this work reviews the promising combination of STFs with cork. Given the sustainability of cork and its energy absorption capacity, cork-STF composites are a promising solution for various impact-absorbing applications. Overall, the paper underscores the versatility and potential of STFs, and advocates for further research and exploration.

Confined Unimolecular Micelles for Directed Self-Assembly of Ultrastable Multiple-Responsive Ratiometric Fluorescent Ultrasmall Nanoparticle Assemblies

Ultrasmall fluorescent nanomaterials have been widely studied as novel fluorescent probes; however, these nanomaterials are prone to structural damage or aggregation, and the sensitivity and accuracy of most single emission fluorescence probes were very low. Therefore, the controlled synthesis of stable dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence ultrasmall assembly probes still remains a challenge. Herein, star-like polymer unimolecular micelles were utilized as a scaffold template to encapsulate fluorescent ultrasmall carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) via the polymer template directed self-assembly strategy to obtain multiple-responsive ratiometric fluorescent assemblies. The assemblies were ultrastable, well-defined, and nearly monodispersed with controlled size, regular morphology, and pH- and thermal-responsiveness. The assemblies can be applied to realize rapid, sensitive, quantitative, and specific detection of Cu2+ and GSH. Moreover, the convenient rapid real-time detection was realized via the combination of the visualized paper-based sensor, and the multilevel information encryption was also achieved.

Light-Mediated Polymerization Catalyzed by Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials, specifically carbon dots and carbon nitrides, play a crucial role as heterogeneous photoinitiators in both radical and cationic polymerization processes. These recently introduced materials offer promising solutions to the limitations of current homogeneous systems, presenting a novel approach to photopolymerization. This review highlights the preparation and photocatalytic performance of these nanomaterials, emphasizing their application in various polymerization techniques, including photoinduced i) free radical, ii) RAFT, iii) ATRP, and iv) cationic photopolymerization. Additionally, it discusses their potential in addressing contemporary challenges and explores prospects in this field. Moreover, carbon nitrides, in particular, exhibit exceptional oxygen tolerance, underscoring their significance in radical polymerization processes and allowing their applications such as 3D printing, surface modification of coatings, and hydrogel engineering.

Ag-In-Zn-S alloyed nanocrystals as photocatalysts of controlled light-mediated radical polymerization

We report on the first case of the use of nonstoichiometric ternary (Ag-In-Zn-S) semiconductor nanocrystals as photoinitiators and photocatalysts of methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization. Two types of nanocrystals were tested, differing in their composition and characterized by red (λmax = 731 nm) and green (λmax = 528 nm) photoluminescence, respectively. Exploiting their reducing properties and capability of free radical generation we demonstrate that under ultraviolet (UV) radiation they effectively photoinitiate radical polymerization of MMA whereas under visible light (blue or green) they act as photocatalysts of living radical polymerization.

Phenanthroline Derived N-Doped Carbon Dots as Robust Metal-Free Photocatalysts for PET-RAFT Polymerization and Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Metal-free organic photocatalysts for photo-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP) are witnessed to make increasing advancement in the precise synthesis of polymers. However, challenges still exist in the development of high-efficiency and environmentally sustainable carbon dots (CDs)-based organocatalysts. Herein, N-doped CDs derived from phenanthroline derivative (Aphen) are prepared as metal-free photocatalysts for photoinduced electron transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization. The introduction of phenanthroline structure enhances the excited state lifetime of CDs and expands the conjugated length of their internal structure to enable the light-absorption to reach green light region, thereby enhancing photocatalytic activity. The as-designed CDs exhibit unprecedented photocatalytic capacity in photopolymerization even in large-volume reaction (100 mL) with high monomer conversion and narrow polymer dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.20) under green light. The photocatalytic system is compatible with PET-RAFT polymerization of numerous monomers and the production of high molecular weight polyacrylate (Mn >250 000) with exquisite spatiotemporal control. Above results confirm the potential of CDs as photocatalyst, which has not been achieved with other CDs catalysts used in photo-RDRP. In addition, the construction of fluorescent polymer nanoparticles using CDs as both photocatalyst and phosphor through photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly (Photo-PISA) technology is successfully demonstrated for the first time.

Surface Functionalization with Polymer Brushes via Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization: Synthesis, Applications, and Current Challenges

Polymer brushes have received great attention in recent years due to their distinctive properties and wide range of applications. The synthesis of polymer brushes typically employs surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) techniques. To realize the control of the polymerization process in different environments, various SI-ATRP techniques triggered by different stimuli have been developed. This review focuses on the latest developments in different stimuli-triggered SI-ATRP methods, such as electrochemically mediated, photoinduced, enzyme-assisted, mechanically controlled, and organocatalyzed ATRP. Additionally, SI-ATRP technology triggered by a combination of multiple stimuli sources is also discussed. Furthermore, the applications of polymer brushes in lubrication, biological applications, antifouling, and catalysis are also systematically summarized and discussed. Despite the advancements in the synthesis of various types of 1D, 2D, and 3D polymer brushes via controlled radical polymerization, contemporary challenges remain in the quest for more efficient and straightforward synthetic protocols that allow for precise control over the composition, structure, and functionality of polymer brushes. We anticipate the readers could promote the understanding of surface functionalization based on ATRP-mediated polymer brushes and envision future directions for their application in surface coating technologies.

Degradable Block Copolymer Nanoparticles Synthesized by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) combines polymerization and in situ self-assembly of block copolymers in one system and has become a widely used method to prepare block copolymer nanoparticles at high concentrations. The persistence of polymers in the environment poses a huge threat to the ecosystem and represents a significant waste of resources. There is an urgent need to develop novel chemical approaches to synthesize degradable polymers. To meet with this demand, it is crucial to install degradability into PISA nanoparticles. Most recently, degradable PISA nanoparticles have been synthesized by introducing degradation mechanisms into either shell-forming or core-forming blocks. This Minireview summarizes the development in degradable block copolymer nanoparticles synthesized by PISA, including shell-degradable, core-degradable, and all-degradable nanoparticles. Future development will benefit from expansion of polymerization techniques with new degradation mechanisms and adaptation of high-throughput approaches for both PISA syntheses and degradation studies.

Visible Light-Regulated Ring-Opening Polymerization of Lactones by Employing Indigo as a Photoacid Catalyst

The development of visible light-regulated polymerizations for precision synthesis of polymers has drawn considerable attention in the past years. In this study, an ancient dye, indigo, is successfully identified as a new and efficient photoacid catalyst, which can readily promote the ring-opening polymerization of lactones under visible light irradiation in a well-controlled manner, affording the desired polyester products with predictable molecular weights and narrow dispersity. The enhanced acidity of indigos by excitation is crucial to the H-bonding activation of the lactone monomers. Chain extension and block copolymer synthesis are also demonstrated with this method.

Polymer Brushes and Surface Nanostructures: Molecular Design, Precise Synthesis, and Self-Assembly

For over two decades, polymer brushes have found wide applications in industry and scientific research. Now, polymer brush research has been a significant research focus in the community of polymer science. In this review paper, we give an introduction to the synthesis, self-assembly, and applications of one-dimensional (1D) polymer brushes on polymer backbones, two-dimensional (2D) polymer brushes on flat surfaces, and three-dimensional (3D) polymer brushes on spherical particles. Examples of the synthesis of polymer brushes on different substrates are provided. Studies on the formation of the surface nanostructures on solid surfaces are also reviewed in this article. Multicomponent polymer brushes on solid surfaces are able to self-assemble into surface micelles (s-micelles). If the s-micelles are linked to the substrates through cleavable linkages, the s-micelles can be cleaved from the substrates, and the cleaved s-micelles are able to self-assemble into hierarchical structures. The formation of the surface nanostructures by coassembly of polymer brushes and "free" polymer chains (coassembly approach) or polymerization-induced surface self-assembly approach, is discussed. The applications of the polymer brushes in colloid and biomedical science are summarized. Finally, perspectives on the development of polymer brushes are offered in this article.

Toward the Rational Design of Organic Catalysts for Organocatalysed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerisation

Thanks to their diversity, organic photocatalysts (PCs) have been widely used in manufacturing polymeric products with well-defined molecular weights, block sequences, and architectures. Still, however, more universal property-performance relationships are needed to enable the rational design of such PCs. That is, a set of unique descriptors ought to be identified to represent key properties of the PCs relevant for polymerisation. Previously, the redox potentials of excited PCs (PC*) were used as a good descriptor for characterising very structurally similar PCs. However, it fails to elucidate PCs with diverse chromophore cores and ligands, among which those used for polymerisation are a good representative. As showcased by model systems of organocatalysed atom transfer radical polymerisation (O-ATRP), new universal descriptors accounting for additional factors, such as the binding and density overlap between the PC* and initiator, are proposed and proved to be successful in elucidating the experimental performances of PCs in polymerisation. While O-ATRP is exemplified here, the approach adopted is general for studying other photocatalytic systems.

ATRP catalysts of tetradentate guanidine ligands - do guanidine donors induce a faster atom transfer?

Tripodal tetradentate N donor ligands stabilise the most active ATRP catalyst systems. Here, we set out to synthesise the new guanidine ligand TMG-4NMe2uns-penp, inspired by p-substituted tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) ligands. The impact of changing pyridine against guanidine donors was examined through solid state and solution experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the solid state, the molecular structures of copper complexes based on the ligands TMG-4NMe2uns-penp, TMG-uns-penp and TMG3tren were discussed concerning the influence of a NMe2 substituent at the pyridines and the guanidine donors. In solution, the TMG-4NMe2uns-penp system was investigated by several methods, including UV/Vis, EPR and NMR spectroscopy indicating similar properties to that of the highly active TPMANMe2 system. The redox potentials were determined and related to the catalytic activity. Besides the expected trends between these and the ligand structures, there is evidence that guanidine donors in tripodal ligand systems lead to a better deactivation and possibly a faster exchange within the ATRP equilibrium than TPMA systems. Supported by DFT calculations, it derives from an easier cleavable Cu-Br bond of the copper(II) deactivator species. The high activity was stated by a controlled initiator for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) ATRP of styrene.

Visible-light-induced ATRP under high-pressure: synthesis of ultra-high-molecular-weight polymers

In this study, a high-pressure-assisted photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (p ≤ 250 MPa) enabled the synthesis of ultra-high-molecular-weight polymers (UHMWPs) of up to 9 350 000 and low/moderate dispersity (1.10 < Đ < 1.46) in a co-solvent system (water/DMSO), without reaction mixture deoxygenation.

Growth kinetics and morphology characterization of binary polymeric fluid under random photo-illumination

We present a comprehensive study using dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate phase separation kinetics (PSK) in three-dimensional (3d) polymeric fluids under random photo-illumination. We consider two scenarios: polymer blends with active radicals at one end of each immiscible chain and block copolymer (BCP) melts with photosensitive bonds linking incompatible blocks. The phase separation (PS) is induced by temperature quench of the initial homogeneously mixed system. Simultaneously, the system experiences random photo-illumination, simulated by two concurrent random events: (a) the recombination of active radicals in polymer blends and (b) the breaking of photosensitive bonds in BCP chains. Variations in the bond-breaking probability, Pb, mimic the change in light intensity. The length scale follows power law growth, R(t) ∼ tϕ, where ϕ represents the growth exponent. Increasing Pb results in a gradual transition in growth kinetics from micro-PS to macro-PS, accompanied by corresponding transition probabilities for both systems. Micro-PSK dominates the evolution process at low Pb values. The scaling functions exhibit data overlap for most scaled distances, indicating the statistical self-similarity of evolving patterns. Our study enhances the understanding of PSK in polymeric fluids, revealing the impact of photosensitive bonds and active radicals. Furthermore, it suggests the potential for designing novel polymeric materials with desired properties.

Synthesizing biomaterials in living organisms

Living organisms fabricate biomacromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins by the self-assembly process. The research on the mechanism of biomacromolecule formation also inspires the exploration of in vivo synthesized biomaterials. By elaborate design, artificial building blocks or precursors can self-assemble or polymerize into functional biomaterials within living organisms. In recent decades, these so-called in vivo synthesized biomaterials have achieved extensive applications in cell-fate manipulation, disease theranostics, bioanalysis, cellular surface engineering, and tissue regeneration. In this review, we classify strategies for in vivo synthesis into non-covalent, covalent, and genetic types. The development of these approaches is based on the chemical principles of supramolecular chemistry and synthetic chemistry, biological cues such as enzymes and microenvironments, and the means of synthetic biology. By summarizing the design principles in detail, some insights into the challenges and opportunities in this field are provided to  enlighten further research.

Fluoropolymer Nanoparticles Synthesized via Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerizations and Their Applications

Fluorinated polymeric nanoparticles (FPNPs) combine unique properties of fluorocarbon and polymeric nanoparticles, which has stimulated massive interest for decades. However, fluoropolymers are not readily available from nature, resulting in synthetic developments to obtain FPNPs via free radical polymerizations. Recently, while increasing cutting-edge directions demand tailored FPNPs, such materials have been difficult to access via conventional approaches. Reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) are powerful methods to afford well-defined polymers. Researchers have applied RDRPs to the fabrication of FPNPs, enabling the construction of particles with improved complexity in terms of structure, composition, morphology, and functionality. Related examples can be classified into three categories. First, well-defined fluoropolymers synthesized via RDRPs have been utilized as precursors to form FPNPs through self-folding and solution self-assembly. Second, thermally and photoinitiated RDRPs have been explored to realize in situ preparations of FPNPs with varied morphologies via polymerization-induced self-assembly and cross-linking copolymerization. Third, grafting from inorganic nanoparticles has been investigated based on RDRPs. Importantly, those advancements have promoted studies toward promising applications, including magnetic resonance imaging, biomedical delivery, energy storage, adsorption of perfluorinated alkyl substances, photosensitizers, and so on. This Review should present useful knowledge to researchers in polymer science and nanomaterials and inspire innovative ideas for the synthesis and applications of FPNPs.

Red-Light-Driven Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for High-Throughput Polymer Synthesis in Open Air

Photoinduced reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP) techniques offer exceptional control over polymerization, providing access to well-defined polymers and hybrid materials with complex architectures. However, most photo-RDRP methods rely on UV/visible light or photoredox catalysts (PCs), which require complex multistep synthesis. Herein, we present the first example of fully oxygen-tolerant red/NIR-light-mediated photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) in a high-throughput manner under biologically relevant conditions. The method uses commercially available methylene blue (MB+) as the PC and [X-CuII/TPMA]+ (TPMA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) complex as the deactivator. The mechanistic study revealed that MB+ undergoes a reductive quenching cycle in the presence of the TPMA ligand used in excess. The formed semireduced MB (MB•) sustains polymerization by regenerating the [CuI/TPMA]+ activator and together with [X-CuII/TPMA]+ provides control over the polymerization. This dual catalytic system exhibited excellent oxygen tolerance, enabling polymerizations with high monomer conversions (>90%) in less than 60 min at low volumes (50-250 μL) and high-throughput synthesis of a library of well-defined polymers and DNA-polymer bioconjugates with narrow molecular weight distributions (Đ < 1.30) in an open-air 96-well plate. In addition, the broad absorption spectrum of MB+ allowed ATRP to be triggered under UV to NIR irradiation (395-730 nm). This opens avenues for the integration of orthogonal photoinduced reactions. Finally, the MB+/Cu catalysis showed good biocompatibility during polymerization in the presence of cells, which expands the potential applications of this method.

Modification of 3D-Printed PLA Structures Using Photo-Iniferter Polymerization: Toward On-Demand Antimicrobial Water Filters

Water filtration is an important application to ensure the accessibility of clean drinking water. As requirements and contaminants vary on a local level, adjustable filter devices and their evaluation with contaminants are required. Within this work, modular filter devices are designed featuring an adjustable surface functionalization. For this purpose, 3D-printed structures are created consisting of bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) that are manufactured by extrusion printing. The surface of PLA is activated with amino groups that are used to install xanthates as chain transfer agents. Subsequently, photo-iniferter (PI) polymerization is used to create cationic polymer brushes on the surface of PLA substrates. Multiple surface characterization techniques are employed to prove successful growth of polymer brushes on PLA. After initial optimization studies on flat surfaces, filter devices are printed, functionalized, and used to remove bacteria from contaminated water. Significant reduction of the number of microorganisms is detected after filtration (single filtration or cycling) and contaminating organism can also be removed from freshwater samples by simple incubation with a 3D-printed filter. The herein developed setup for producing functional filter devices and probing their performance in affinity filtration is a useful platform technology, enabling the rapid testing of polymer brushes for such applications.

Radical chemistry in polymer science: an overview and recent advances

Radical chemistry is one of the most important methods used in modern polymer science and industry. Over the past century, new knowledge on radical chemistry has both promoted and been generated from the emergence of polymer synthesis and modification techniques. In this review, we discuss radical chemistry in polymer science from four interconnected aspects. We begin with radical polymerization, the most employed technique for industrial production of polymeric materials, and other polymer synthesis involving a radical process. Post-polymerization modification, including polymer crosslinking and polymer surface modification, is the key process that introduces functionality and practicality to polymeric materials. Radical depolymerization, an efficient approach to destroy polymers, finds applications in two distinct fields, semiconductor industry and environmental protection. Polymer chemistry has largely diverged from organic chemistry with the fine division of modern science but polymer chemists constantly acquire new inspirations from organic chemists. Dialogues on radical chemistry between the two communities will deepen the understanding of the two fields and benefit the humanity.

Photocatalytic ATRP Depolymerization: Temporal Control at Low ppm of Catalyst Concentration

A photocatalytic ATRP depolymerization is introduced that significantly suppresses the reaction temperature from 170 to 100 °C while enabling temporal regulation. In the presence of low-toxicity iron-based catalysts and under visible light irradiation, near-quantitative monomer recovery could be achieved (up to 90%), albeit with minimal temporal control. By employing ppm concentrations of either FeCl2 or FeCl3, the depolymerization during the dark periods could be completely eliminated, thus enabling temporal control and the possibility to modulate the rate by simply turning the light "on" and "off". Notably, our approach allowed preservation of the end-group fidelity throughout the reaction, could be carried out at high polymer loadings (up to 2M), and was compatible with various polymers and light sources. This methodology provides a facile, environmentally friendly, and temporally regulated route to chemically recycle ATRP-synthesized polymers, thus opening the door for further opportunities.

Inverse Miniemulsion Enables the Continuous-Flow Synthesis of Controlled Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polymers

We report the controlled synthesis of ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polymers (Mn ≥ 106 g/mol) via continuous flow in a tubular reactor. At high monomer conversion, UHMW polymers in homogeneous batch polymerization exhibit high viscosities that pose challenges for employing continuous flow reactors. However, under heterogeneous inverse miniemulsion (IME) conditions, UHMW polymers can be produced within the dispersed phase, while the viscosity of the heterogeneous mixture remains approximately the same as the viscosity of the continuous phase. Conducting such IME polymerizations in flow results in a faster rate of polymerization compared to batch IME polymerizations while still providing excellent control over molecular weight up to 106 g/mol. Crucial emulsion parameters, such as particle size and stability under continuous flow conditions, were examined using dynamic light scattering. A range of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) and poly(4-acryloylmorpholine) polymers with molecular weights of 104-106 g/mol (Đ ≤ 1.31) were produced by this method using water-soluble trithiocarbonates as photoiniferters.

Robust Strategy to Improve the Compatibility between Incorporated Upconversion Nanoparticles and the Bulk Transparent Polymer Matrix

Traditional transparent polymer nanocomposites combined with functional fluorescent inorganic nanofillers are promising for many advanced optical applications. However, the aggregation of the incorporated functional nanoparticles results in light scattering and will decrease the transparency of nanocomposites, which will restrain the application of the transparent nanocomposites. Herein, a robust synthesis strategy was proposed to modify upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to form UCNP@PMMA core@shell nanocomposites though metal-free photoinduced surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-SI-ATRP), and thus, the dispersity of UCNP@PMMA and the interface compatibility between the surface of UCNPs and the bulk PMMA matrix was greatly improved. The obtained PMMA nanocomposites possess high transparency and show strong upconversion photoluminescence properties, which promises great opportunities for application in 3D display and related optoelectronic fields. This strategy could also be applied to fabricate other kinds of functional transparent polymer nanocomposites with inorganic nanoparticles uniformly dispersed.

Process intensification of continuous-flow seATRP by a sonicated multi-reactor setup

Simplified electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (seATRP) is a versatile technique for synthesizing polymers with precise control and complex architecture. Continuous-flow seATRP has recently been realized by using a sonicated microreactor but still faces limitations such as relatively low conversion and difficulties in synthesizing polymers with high molecular weight. Herein, a novel multi-reactor setup is demonstrated. By tuning the currents applied to different reaction stages in the setup, 90% conversion can be achieved while maintaining relatively low dispersity (<1.35). Meanwhile, the unique design enables a wider processing window for sonication due to greater viscous attenuation in the second reactor, thus largely addressing the problem associated with high viscosity during the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers. The developed setup also offers an alternative strategy for future scale-up of continuous-flow seATRP.

Visible-Light-Induced Cationic Polymerization of Isobutylene: A Route toward the Synthesis of End-Functional Polyisobutylene

The visible-light-induced cationic polymerization of isobutylene with a dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn2(CO)10)/diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (Ph2I+PF6-) photoinitiating system in a CH2Cl2/n-hexane mixture at -30 °C was reported. It was shown that polymerization is initiated by chloromethylisobutyl carbocations generated by the oxidation of chloromethylisobutyl radicals by Ph2I+PF6-. The latter are formed via chlorine abstraction from solvent (CH2Cl2) by MnCO5· radicals, which are generated by the photoinduced decomposition of Mn2(CO)10, followed by single isobutylene addition. This initiating system allowed us to synthesize valuable low molecular weight polyisobutylene with a relatively low polydispersity (Mn = 2000-3000 g mol-1; Đ < 1.7) and high content of exo-olefin end groups (up to 90%). The molecular weight of polyisobutylenes could be easily controlled in the range from 2000 to 12000 g mol-1 by changing the diphenyl iodonium salt concentration. Poly(β-pinene) with Mn = 5000 g mol-1 and Đ ∼ 2.0 was successfully synthesized using the same photoinitiating system.

Highly Sensitive Detection of Bacteria by Binder-Coupled Multifunctional Polymeric Dyes

Infectious diseases caused by pathogens are a health burden, but traditional pathogen identification methods are complex and time-consuming. In this work, we have developed well-defined, multifunctional copolymers with rhodamine B dye synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using fully oxygen-tolerant photoredox/copper dual catalysis. ATRP enabled the efficient synthesis of copolymers with multiple fluorescent dyes from a biotin-functionalized initiator. Biotinylated dye copolymers were conjugated to antibody (Ab) or cell-wall binding domain (CBD), resulting in a highly fluorescent polymeric dye-binder complex. We showed that the unique combination of multifunctional polymeric dyes and strain-specific Ab or CBD exhibited both enhanced fluorescence and target selectivity for bioimaging of Staphylococcus aureus by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. The ATRP-derived polymeric dyes have the potential as biosensors for the detection of target DNA, protein, or bacteria, as well as bioimaging.

Fully Oxygen-Tolerant Visible-Light-Induced ATRP of Acrylates in Water: Toward Synthesis of Protein-Polymer Hybrids

Over the last decade, photoinduced ATRP techniques have been developed to harness the energy of light to generate radicals. Most of these methods require the use of UV light to initiate polymerization. However, UV light has several disadvantages: it can degrade proteins, damage DNA, cause undesirable side reactions, and has low penetration depth in reaction media. Recently, we demonstrated green-light-induced ATRP with dual catalysis, where eosin Y (EYH₂) was used as an organic photoredox catalyst in conjunction with a copper complex. This dual catalysis proved to be highly efficient, allowing rapid and well-controlled aqueous polymerization of oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate without the need for deoxygenation. Herein, we expanded this system to synthesize polyacrylates under biologically relevant conditions using Cu^II/Me₆TREN (Me₆TREN = tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine) and EYH₂ at ppm levels. Water-soluble oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether acrylate (average M _n = 480, OEOA₄₈₀) was polymerized in open reaction vessels under green light irradiation (520 nm). Despite continuous oxygen diffusion, high monomer conversions were achieved within 40 min, yielding polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.17 ≤ D̵ ≤ 1.23) for a wide targeted DP range (50-800). In situ chain extension and block copolymerization confirmed the preserved chain end functionality. In addition, polymerization was triggered/halted by turning on/off a green light, showing temporal control. The optimized conditions also enabled controlled polymerization of various hydrophilic acrylate monomers, such as 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, 2-(methylsulfinyl)ethyl acrylate), and zwitterionic carboxy betaine acrylate. Notably, the method allowed the synthesis of well-defined acrylate-based protein-polymer hybrids using a straightforward reaction setup without rigorous deoxygenation.

NIR-Photocontrolled Aqueous RAFT Polymerization with Polymerizable Water-Soluble Zinc Phthalocyanine as Photocatalyst

In order to give an answer for the challenges of long wavelength-photocontrolled radical polymerization in aqueous solutions and to address the shortcomings of conventional near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysts (PCs) that are difficult to subject to post-treatment, we designed and synthesized a series of β-tetra-substituted water-soluble zinc phthalocyanines (β-TS-Zns) as the NIR PCs for reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization successfully under irradiation with NIR (λ_max = 730 nm) light at room temperature. Importantly, the NIR PCs can also be designed as polymerizable monomers and covalently loaded on the polymer chains, which are endowed with permanent NIR photocatalysis of the resultant polymers. Moreover, the polymerization can not only be carried out in water but also in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution, yielding polymers with controlled molar mass and narrow dispersities (Đ = 1.03-1.25). Therefore, this NIR-photocontrolled aqueous RAFT polymerization system may provide a charming strategy for possible applications in tissue engineering biomaterial in situ benefiting from the high penetration ability of NIR light.

Switchable RAFT Polymerization Employing Photoresponsive HABI as a Mediator

Recently, considerable interest has been devoted to developing switchable reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations via photoactivation methods. Herein, a photo-deactivation strategy is introduced to regulate RAFT polymerization using photoresponsive hexaarylbiimidozole (HABI) as a mediator, which leads to switchable RAFT polymerization by repeated ON/OFF experiments. In comparison with well-known PET-RAFT polymerization, photo-deactivation RAFT (PD-RAFT) polymerization can be temporally stopped with UV light ON, where photoresponsive HABI can reversibly quench propagating radicals, resulting in switchable RAFT polymerization. The proposed mechanism of PD-RAFT polymerization in the presence of HABI involving radical quenching is based on ESR, NMR, GPC, MALDI-TOF-MS, and kinetics studies.

Visible Light Induced High Resolution and Swift 3D Printing System by Halogen Atom Transfer

3D printing technology offers solutions for numerous needs in industry and the daily life of individuals. In recent years, most research efforts have focused on this technology as the market share has grown and requirements have become specified in their related fields. In this work, a novel visible light induced 3D printing system with high resolution and short printing time using dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn₂ (CO)₁₀ ) in combination with organic halides is reported. The radicals formed through halogen abstraction by photochemically generated manganese pentacarbonyl from organic halides with high quantum efficiency initiate the polymerization of acrylic resins. The kinetics of the process using various halide-containing molecules in the photoinitiaiting system are investigated with real-time fourrier transform infrared spectroscopy and photo-differential scanning calorimetry analyses, and the characteristics of 3D printouts are presented and compared with that of the commercial photoinitiator, 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide without Mn₂ (CO)₁₀ . The results obtained confirm that the combination of Mn₂ (CO)₁₀ and structurally diverse organic halides is a class of promising 3D system for various applications.
