Towards a greater understanding of anxiety sensitivity across groups: The construct validity of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3

Anxiety sensitivity and COVID-19 mental health, fatigue, and well-being: a longitudinal examination among adults from the United States during March-October 2020

There is widespread empirical evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to elevated risk of mental and physical health symptoms and decreased quality of life. The present investigation sought to examine if individual differences in anxiety sensitivity was associated with mental health, psychosomatic, and well-being among a sample of US adults during a 6-month period early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing longitudinal research methodology, we tested the hypothesis that the anxiety sensitivity global factor would be related to increased risk of anxiety, depression, fatigue, and lower well-being. Secondary analyses evaluated the lower order anxiety sensitivity factors for the same criterion variables. The sample consisted of 778 participants with an average age of 37.96 (SD = 11.81; range 18-73). Results indicated that, as hypothesized, anxiety sensitivity was associated with increased risk for more severe anxiety, depression, fatigue, and lesser well-being; the observed effects of anxiety sensitivity were relatively robust and evident in adjusted models that controlled for numerous theoretically and clinically relevant factors (e.g. perceived health status). Overall, these results suggest that pandemic functioning could likely be improved via interventions that target elevated anxiety sensitivity as a vulnerability factor for a broad range of aversive psychosomatic symptoms and personal well-being.

Anxiety sensitivity in relation to smoking dependence motives among Latinx persons who smoke

Hispanic/Latinx (hereafter Latinx) persons are an established tobacco disparities population in the United States (US). Past work has suggested that individual differences in anxiety sensitivity, or the fear of arousal-based sensations, is one important cognitive construct for smoking maintenance and relapse among Latinx persons who smoke. However, previous research has not examined if anxiety sensitivity is associated with motivational facets of smoking dependence among this tobacco disparities population. In the current study, anxiety sensitivity was explored in terms of smoking motives for primary, secondary, and overall cigarette dependence. Participants included 336 English-speaking Latinx adults in the US who smoked cigarettes daily (Mage = 35.53, SD = 8.65, 37.3% Female). Results indicated that anxiety sensitivity was statistically significantly and positively related to higher primary and secondary dependence motives and marginally statistically significant to cigarette dependence; findings were evident after adjusting for numerous theoretically relevant variables (e.g., depression). Overall, the current study is the first to document linkages between anxiety sensitivity and numerous motivational bases of tobacco dependence among Latinx persons who smoke from the US.

Posttraumatic Stress and Alcohol Use Among Hispanic/Latinx University Students: A Moderated Indirect Effect Model of Coping-Related Drinking and Anxiety Sensitivity

OBJECTIVE

Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and anxiety sensitivity (AS) are associated with increased alcohol use and coping-motivated drinking among university students. This study among trauma-exposed Hispanic/Latinx university students sought to examine the indirect effect of PTSS on alcohol use severity through coping-motivated drinking and test the moderating role of AS and AS subfacets.

METHODS

University students who identified as Hispanic/Latinx (N = 830) were recruited from a large, urban, southern university and completed online, self-report questionnaires.

RESULTS

A significant interactive effect of PTSS and AS on coping-motivated drinking emerged. PTSS exerted a significant indirect effect on alcohol use severity, through coping-motivated drinking. Simple slope analyses revealed that PTSS was associated with coping-motivated drinking across all levels of AS. Post hoc results revealed unique biological sex differences in probable diagnosis odds ratios.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings indicate that PTSS and AS are associated with coping-motivated drinking and alcohol use severity in trauma-exposed, Hispanic/Latinx university students.

Cannabis use in adolescents and anxiety symptoms and disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The use of cannabis is highly prevalent during adolescence compared to the general adult population. In addition to the high comorbidity between cannabis use and anxiety disorders, early evidence suggests that cannabis may precede the development of anxiety. Moreover, adolescence represents a major developmental period for both neurobiological and psychological processes, placing these individuals at a heightened vulnerability to the influence of cannabis.Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the prospective associations between adolescent cannabis use and subsequent anxiety outcomes (i.e. anxiety disorders and/or symptoms).Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted encompassing data from articles published between database inception and September 2022.Results: Six longitudinal studies were identified for quantitative analysis, while twelve non-overlapping longitudinal studies were identified for qualitative review (total N = 18; 33380 subjects). Meta-analytical findings supported an association between adolescent cannabis use and the development of a subsequent anxiety disorder (Odds Ratio = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.37-3.36, p < .01). These findings were consistent with our qualitative synthesis where nine of the twelve longitudinal studies observed a significant relationship between adolescent cannabis use and exacerbation of anxiety symptoms later in life, irrespective of an anxiety disorder diagnosis.Discussion: In summary, the current evidence suggests a prospective association between adolescent cannabis use and later anxiety symptoms and disorders. These findings underscore the importance of refining research methodologies, considering sex-based differences and controlling for confounding factors, as well as implementing educational initiatives and developing clinical interventions to address the mental health risks associated with cannabis use among adolescents.

Clarifying relations of emotion regulation, emotional avoidance and anxiety symptoms in a community-based treatment-seeking sample

OBJECTIVES

Anxiety is a global problem that is readily treatable with psychosocial interventions, though many individuals do not benefit following participation in extant treatment protocols. Accordingly, clarification of process-related variables that may be leveraged to enhance outcomes appears warranted. Emotion regulation (ER) is a robust correlate of anxiety symptoms and is often targeted in behavioural treatments applied to anxiety-related problems. Yet, some evidence suggests ER difficulties may be a proxy variable for emotional avoidance (EA). Clarifying the relative influence of ER and EA on anxiety symptom severity may improve specificity in targeting behavioural processes within psychosocial treatments designed to alleviate anxiety-related suffering. Accordingly, we examined relations of ER and EA to anxiety symptom severity after accounting for anxiety sensitivity and anxiolytic medication use in a community-based treatment-seeking sample.

DESIGN

A four-step hierarchical linear regression analysis of cross-sectional data provided by a community-based treatment-seeking sample.

METHODS

Totally, 120 participants (Mage  = 39.18; Female = 58.3%) completed a questionnaire packet upon intake to an anxiety disorders clinic.

RESULTS

EA and ER were strongly correlated, and each accounted for significant variance over and above model covariates. EA was a dominant risk factor for anxiety symptom severity, as ER was not a significant predictor (p = .073) following the inclusion of EA in the model (p = .006).

CONCLUSIONS

EA appears to be a dominant risk factor, and ER a proxy risk factor, for anxiety symptom severity. EA may be an avenue for greater treatment specificity for those with anxiety symptoms.

Social concerns about anxious arousal explain the association between neural responses to anxious arousal pictures and social anxiety

Cognitive theories propose that social anxiety disorder involves heightened attention to anxious arousal symptoms due to worries that they may evoke rejection from others. Supporting this, studies have shown that social anxiety is related to greater attention to representations of anxious arousal and to anxiety sensitivity social concerns, which refers to sensitivity to feelings of anxious arousal during social situations. However, this has not yet been tested using neural indices of attention to images depicting anxious arousal. To examine these associations, the current study examined early and sustained attentional bias to anxious arousal images using the P2 and the late positive potential (LPP), respectively. Electroencephalogram data were collected while a non-clinical sample of undergraduate students (N = 106) viewed images of people exhibiting anxious arousal in addition to blocks of negative and neutral images from the IAPS. The neural response to anxious arousal images was isolated using residual scores (e.g., using linear regression to predict the P2 elicited by anxious arousal images from the P2 elicited by neutral images (P2neutral→AA) or negative images (P2negative→AA), then saving the unstandardized residuals). There was an indirect effect of the P2neutral→AA and P2negative→AA waveforms that was explained by anxiety sensitivity social concerns. Additionally, there was an indirect effect of both LPP waveforms on social anxiety symptoms during the early time window of the LPP (400-700 ms). At the later time window of the LPP (700-1000 ms), there was an indirect effect of the LPPneutral→AA residual waveform, but not the LPPnegative→AA, on social anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety sensitivity in terms of mental health among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of sexual minority college students

Objective: Limited work has focused on understanding the function of individual difference factors in terms of mental health among sexual minority college students. Anxiety sensitivity is one individual difference factor which has received substantial empirical attention, but its role is presently understudied among racially/ethnically diverse sexual minority college students.Participants: Participants included a racially and ethnically diverse sample of sexual minority college students (N = 217; Mage = 20.82 years; SD = 3.06).Methods: The present investigation evaluated the role of anxiety sensitivity in relation to anxious arousal, social anxiety, depression, and suicidality.Results: Results indicated that anxiety sensitivity was significantly related to increased anxious arousal, social anxiety, depression, and suicidality after adjusting for age, sex, relationship status, subjective social status, and neuroticism.Conclusions: This investigation provides the first empirical evidence that anxiety sensitivity is related to poorer mental health outcomes for racially/ethnically diverse sexual minority college students.

Anxiety-related constructs and smoking outcome expectancies among Latinx smokers

Hispanic/Latinx (hereafter Latinx) smokers in the United States (US) experience unique smoking cessation-related challenges. Smoking outcome expectancies (i.e., positive and negative beliefs about the consequences of smoking behavior) have been linked to the maintenance of smoking and comorbidity with negative emotional states such as anxiety among Latinx smokers. However, past work has not characterized rates of probable anxiety disorder and elevated levels of anxiety sensitivity among English-speaking daily Latinx smokers from the United States or concurrently evaluated the explanatory relevance of anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity for negative and positive smoking outcome expectancies. The present investigation sought to (a) determine the base rate of probable anxiety disorder and elevated anxiety sensitivity and (b) explore the unique roles of anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity in relation to negative and positive smoking outcome expectancies. Participants included 338 English-speaking Latinx adult daily cigarette smokers from the United States (Mage = 35.53 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18-61; 37.3% female). Findings revealed high rates of probable anxiety disorder (50.9%) and elevated anxiety sensitivity (73.4%) among English-speaking Latinx smokers from the United States. Anxiety sensitivity, but not anxiety symptoms or disorders, was significantly related to negative consequences, negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, and appetite/weight control smoking outcome expectancies. Overall, anxiety experiences were common among Latinx smokers, and anxiety sensitivity was a relatively more consistent and robust predictor of negative and positive outcome expectancies relative to anxiety symptoms and probable anxiety disorder. Anxiety Sensitivity Among Trauma-Exposed Non-Hispanic Black Adults: Relations to Posttraumatic Stress

ABSTRACT

The non-Hispanic Black population experiences trauma-related disparities. One potentially important individual difference construct for posttraumatic stress is anxiety sensitivity. There is limited work on anxiety sensitivity among non-Hispanic Black persons, and no research has focused on this construct in terms of posttraumatic stress among this population. This study sought to build on this limited knowledge by exploring whether this construct was uniquely associated with more severe posttraumatic stress among this population. Participants included non-Hispanic Black trauma-exposed adults ( N = 121; Mage = 21.79 years). Results indicated that anxiety sensitivity was related to more severe overall posttraumatic stress and greater severity of each posttraumatic stress symptom cluster; all effects were evident after adjusting for the variance accounted for by age, sex, education, subjective social status, neuroticism, and number of traumatic event types experienced (lifetime). The study provides the first empirical evidence that, among a trauma-exposed non-Hispanic Black sample of adults, anxiety sensitivity is related to more severe posttraumatic stress symptoms. This intraindividual difference factor could be a focus of intervention programming for this trauma disparity population.

Anxiety Sensitivity Among Non-Hispanic Black Adults: Relations to Mental Health and Psychosomatic States

The non-Hispanic Black adult population has notable disparities in mental and physical health compared to several other racial/ethnic groups. Yet, there is a lack of scientific knowledge about psychologically based individual difference factors that may be associated with an exacerbation of common mental and physical health symptoms among non-Hispanic Black persons. The present investigation sought to build on the limited knowledge about anxiety sensitivity among non-Hispanic Black adults by exploring whether this construct was uniquely associated with a range of prevalent mental health and psychosomatic symptoms commonly tied to disparities among this population. Participants included non-Hispanic Black adults (N = 205; Mage = 21.67 years; SDage = 5.39; age range: 18-60 years; 82.0% female). Results indicated that anxiety sensitivity was positively related to anxious arousal, general depression, insomnia, fatigue severity, and somatic symptom severity; effects were evident above and beyond the variance explained by a range of covariates, including age, sex, education, subjective social status, and neuroticism. Overall, the present findings uniquely build from past research on anxiety sensitivity and non-Hispanic Black adults by demonstrating that individual differences in this construct are consistently and relatively robustly associated with a wide range of mental health and psychosomatic symptoms. Future research that builds from this work may benefit from consideration of intervention programming targeting anxiety sensitivity reduction to offset mental and physical health impairments among the non-Hispanic Black population.

Anxiety sensitivity and reasons for smoking among Black smokers

Black smokers demonstrate higher nicotine dependence and experience higher rates of smoking-related diseases and mortality relative to European American/White smokers. A potential factor relevant to race-specific smoking health disparities may be smoking motives (i.e., motivational basis of smoking). Yet, little research has been conducted to understand psychological factors that may be associated with specific smoking motives among Black smokers. To address this gap in the literature, the current study explored the association between anxiety sensitivity and smoking motives within a subset sample of Black smokers who were interested in participating in a smoking cessation trial (N = 105; 70.5 % male; Mage = 44.8 years, SD = 11.6 years). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated anxiety sensitivity was associated with smoking motives related to habit (β = 0.39, p <.001), negative affect reduction (β = 0.32, p <.001), stimulation (β = 0.31, p <.001), and sensorimotor manipulation (β = 0.26, p =.008). Limited support was found for the effect of motives on past quit attempt engagement. These results may broaden understanding of the psychological mechanisms related to smoking motivation among Black smokers and may inform future intervention efforts to reduce smoking motivation among this health disparities population.

Latinx Individuals Who Smoke Daily with and without a Probable Anxiety Disorder: Differences in Smoking Behavior and Beliefs about Abstinence

There is a well-established relation between anxiety psychopathology and smoking in the general population. However, little work focuses on Latinx/Hispanic (hereafter Latinx) persons who smoke from this comorbidity perspective. The present investigation aimed to explore differences among English-speaking Latinx adults who live in the United States (US) and smoke cigarettes with and without a probable anxiety disorder in terms of cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for quitting, severity of problems when quitting, and smoking abstinence expectancies. The sample included 338 adult Latinx daily cigarette smokers (Mage = 35.53 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18-61; 37.3% female) who identified as Latinx and were recruited nationally throughout the US. Results indicated that among Latinx persons who smoke, those with a probable anxiety disorder (compared to those without) were more likely to demonstrate higher levels of cigarette dependence, severity of problems when trying to quit, perceived barriers for quitting, and negative abstinence expectancies after adjusting for key variables linked to smoking and anxiety (e.g., hazardous drinking, education). The current findings are the first to document probable anxiety disorder status as a clinically relevant factor for a wide range of smoking variables and beliefs about abstinence among Latinx persons who smoke.

Anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for smoking cessation and quit problems among adult Latinx smokers

Cigarette smoking is associated with adverse physical and mental health among Latinx adults in the United States. The present investigation sought to explore the main and interactive effects of anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for smoking cessation, and severity of problems experienced when quitting among adult Latinx smokers. Participants included 338 Latinx adult daily cigarette smokers (Mage = 35.53 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18-61; 37.3% female). Results indicated that anxiety symptoms were associated with greater cigarette dependence, severity of problems when quitting, and perceived barriers for smoking cessation (effect size range: 2%-3% of variance), whereas anxiety sensitivity was related to severity of problems when quitting and perceived barriers for smoking cessation (effect size range: 2%-3% of variance). There was also a statistically significant interaction between anxiety sensitivity and anxiety symptoms for cigarette dependence; anxiety was related to cigarette dependence for Latinx smokers with higher levels of anxiety sensitivity, but not for those with lower levels of anxiety sensitivity. Overall, the present findings indicate that anxiety symptoms and anxiety sensitivity are relevant factors for better understanding cigarette dependence, problems experienced when trying to quit, and perceptions of barriers to quitting among adult Latinx smokers.

Intolerance of uncertainty, anxiety sensitivity, and health anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic: Exploring temporal relationships using cross-lag analysis

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and anxiety sensitivity (AS) have been widely discussed and explored as factors that may contribute to health anxiety. We propose that IU and AS are salient issues for many during the COVID-19 pandemic, and may play a role in the development or exacerbation of health anxiety during the pandemic. Studies have examined links between IU and AS with health anxiety during the pandemic, but these relationships have not been tested together using a longitudinal study design. In the present study, measures of IU, AS, and health anxiety were collected from 301 adults at two time points 6 months apart during (early stages of) the COVID-19 pandemic using an online survey platform. Cross-lagged analysis was utilized to simultaneously estimate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between these three variables. Robust cross-sectional associations were observed, and IU prospectively predicted changes in both health anxiety and AS. No other statistically significant prospective associations emerged. Present findings support the putative role of IU in health anxiety, suggesting that some observed links between AS and health anxiety could be driven by shared variance with IU. IU may be an important factor to monitor and target in health anxiety interventions during the pandemic.

Factor structure of the anxiety sensitivity index-3 in a sample of older adults

Anxiety sensitivity is a transdiagnostic risk factor for internalizing psychopathology in children and adults. Several factor analytic studies have examined the factor structure of anxiety sensitivity in children, adolescents, and adults. However, to date, no studies have specifically examined the factor structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 in older adults. The purpose of the current study was to compare the fit of a correlated three-factor, higher-order, and bifactor model of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) in a sample of older adults. Participants were 856 older adults aged 60-94 recruited through Qualtrics Panels. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated good model fit for the bifactor model and the higher-order model and adequate fit for the correlated three-factor model. These results suggests that the ASI-3 is a valid tool assessing anxiety sensitivity in older adults. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Anxiety sensitivity and its association with perceived barriers for quitting, smoking inflexibility, and severity of quit problems among Black smokers

Black individuals who smoke in the United States experience health disparities related to tobacco use (e.g., greater nicotine dependence, less success in quitting smoking) and interoceptive distress (e.g., somatic symptoms, anxiety). Individual difference factors that amplify interoceptive distress and contribute to poorer smoking behaviors and outcomes warrant further attention and investigation. Thus, the present study sought to explore the association between anxiety sensitivity and clinically-relevant smoking variables of perceived barriers for quitting, smoking inflexibility, and problems experienced during past quit attempts. Participants in the current study included 98 Black adult smokers (71.4% male; Mage = 44.08 years, SD = 11.44 years). Results indicated greater levels of anxiety sensitivity were associated with greater levels of perceived barriers for quitting smoking (b = 0.10, SE = 0.08, p = 0.01), smoking inflexibility (b = 0.02, SE <.001, p <.001), and problems experienced during past smoking quit attempts (b = 0.17, SE = 0.07, p = 0.02). Clinical implications and future directions are further discussed as it relates to anxiety sensitivity and efforts to reduce or quit smoking for this health disparities population.

Psychological inflexibility in terms of eating behaviors among individuals seeking treatment for comorbid affective vulnerabilities and weight-related behaviors

Maladaptive eating patterns and behaviors are frequently documented in relation to obesity onset and management. To better understand these occurrences, it is important to examine psychological processes that may be guiding these patterns and behaviors. The current study examined the role of psychological inflexibility on emotional eating, food cravings, and disordered eating symptoms among 161 participants (60.9% female, Mage = 31.58, SD = 10.71) who attended a baseline appointment for a larger randomized-controlled trial for individuals with elevated anxiety sensitivity and obesity. Three separate two-step hierarchal regressions were conducted. Results indicated that greater levels of psychological inflexibility were associated with greater levels of emotional eating, food cravings, and disordered eating symptoms. These findings suggest that promoting psychological flexibility may be a key factor in promoting positive changes in eating behaviors among individuals seeking treatment for comorbid affective vulnerabilities and weight-related behaviors.

Interoceptive anxiety-related processes: Importance for understanding COVID-19 and future pandemic mental health and addictive behaviors and their comorbidity

The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with an increased prevalence of mental health problems and addictive behaviors. There is a growing theoretical and empirical evidence that individual differences in interoceptive anxiety-related processes are a one set of vulnerability factors that are important in understanding the impact of pandemic-related mental health problems and addictive behavior. However, there has not been a comprehensive effort to explore this rapidly growing body of research and its implications for public health. In this paper, we discuss why interoceptive anxiety-related processes are relevant to understanding mental health and addictive behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. We then provide a narrative review of the available COVID-19 literature linking interoceptive fear and anxiety-related processes (e.g., anxiety sensitivity, health anxiety, and COVID-19 anxiety, fear, and worry) to mental health and addictive behaviors. We then propose a novel transdiagnostic theoretical model that highlights the role of interoceptive anxiety-related processes in mental health and addictive behavior in the context of the present and future pandemics. In the final section, we utilize this conceptualization to underscore clinical implications and provide guidance for future research initiatives in the management of COVID-19 mental health and addictive behaviors and inform the public health field for future pandemics.

Exploring pain experience and anxiety sensitivity among Latinx adults in a federally qualified health center

The Latinx population is the largest minority group in the United States (U.S.) and is expected to continue to grow through at least 2050. Although there is growing recognition of the importance of pain among Latinx individuals, few studies have examined individualized psychological processes governing pain severity and disability in Latinx populations. One psychological factor that has shown promise in relation to pain experience specifically and clinical conditions more generally is anxiety sensitivity. The present investigation sought to (1) characterize the severity of pain among an unselected sample of adult Latinx individuals attending a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC); (2) evaluate the severity of anxiety sensitivity as a function of pain severity; and (3) test the potential explanatory relevance of anxiety sensitivity as an individual difference factor for pain intensity, pain disability, psychological inflexibility for emotional distress, and global life impairment. Participants included 406 adult Spanish-speaking Latinx persons (87.2% female; M_age = 40.26 years, SD = 11.20, and 98.3% used Spanish as their first language) who attended an FQHC in Houston, Texas. Analyses revealed that 62.6% of the sample had at least some pain, and 21.9% of the same had high intensity, moderate interference, or severe interference chronic pain. Further, results provided evidence for anxiety sensitivity as a function of pain grade, such that individuals with grade 2 (high-intensity pain), grade 3 (moderate pain interference), and grade 4 (severe pain interference) chronic pain reported significantly higher levels of anxiety sensitivity than those with grade 0 pain (no chronic pain). Additionally, after controlling for age, gender, marital status, years of education, years living in the U.S., and generalized anxiety, anxiety sensitivity significantly accounted for significant variance in pain intensity, inflexibility in relation to emotional distress, and life impairment. Overall, the current study builds upon what is currently understood about anxiety sensitivity among the Latinx population and uniquely extends past work by linking individual differences in this construct to clinically relevant aspects of pain experience and life impairment among adults attending FQHC's. Additional clinical attention should be focused on anxiety sensitivity to offset pain disparities among this established health disparities group.

Anxiety sensitivity and acculturative stress: Concurrent relations to mental health among Spanish-speaking Latinx in primary care

The Latinx population suffers from mental health inequalities. Although past work has implicated acculturative stress and anxiety sensitivity as important individual difference factors for anxiety and depression in this group, it is presently unclear how they work together to influence more severe anxiety and depressive symptom expression among Latinx. To help address this gap in the existing literature, the current study evaluated the role of concurrent anxiety sensitivity and acculturative stress, in terms of anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders, in a Latinx population in a primary care setting. Participants included 142 Latinx individuals (86.7% female; M_age = 39.66, SD = 11.34). After accounting for shared variance, the results indicated that both anxiety sensitivity and acculturative stress were significantly associated with anxious arousal symptoms, social anxiety, and depressive symptoms. However, anxiety sensitivity, but not acculturative stress, was significantly related to a number of mood and anxiety disorders. These findings suggest the importance of assessing both anxiety sensitivity and acculturative stress in routine mental health screening, as both factors may be related to poorer psychological health among this group.

Examining the Factor Structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 in a Turkish Sample: The Factor Structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the factor structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) in a Turkey sample and to determine measurement invariance of the ASI-3 across gender and age groups. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed on four different models to determine the best fit model for the structure. After the best structure was determined, different models were tested for measurement invariance across gender and age groups. To determine the reliability of the ASI-3, the hierarchical omega coefficient and correlations between the scores obtained from different scales for convergent validity were calculated. It has been determined that the bifactor model is the model that best fits the data, and this model shows invariance across gender and age groups. Besides, evidence regarding the reliability and convergent validity of the ASI-3 was also provided in the study. Current findings show that anxiety sensitivity consists of a general factor (anxiety sensitivity) and three independent specific factors (physical, cognitive, and social concerns). It was concluded that the general factor of anxiety sensitivity constitutes a dominant factor and special factors have a relatively low effect on explaining the structure. Considering the dominance of the general factor, it is recommended to use the ASI-3 total score as a measure of general anxiety sensitivity.

Reciprocal longitudinal associations between anxiety sensitivity and alcohol consumption/problems across adolescence: Examining anxiety as a mediator and race/ethnicity as a moderator

The conditions and populations for which anxiety sensitivity (AS; i.e., the tendency to interpret unpleasant physiological sensations as dangerous) relates to adolescent alcohol use is unclear. This study tested latent-variable cross-lagged panel modeling of AS-alcohol relations in a racially/ethnically heterogenous longitudinal youth cohort (N = 3396; 53.4% female, 45.8% Latinx) assessed annually across high school. Anxiety and race/ethnicity were tested as mediators and moderators, respectively, of AS-alcohol associations. AS prospectively predicted alcohol problems (β's = 0.05-0.07) but not alcohol consumption (β's = 0.02-0.04) across high school. Alcohol problems predicted AS at the end (β = 0.09) but not beginning (β's = 0.01-0.03) of high school and alcohol consumption predicted lower AS at the beginning (β = -0.06) but not end (β's = -0.02-0.01) of high school. Anxiety mediated AS's predictive effects on alcohol problems (βindirect's = 0.01, 95% CI [0.003, 0.03]) across high school. Race/ethnicity did not moderate interrelations of AS, anxiety, and alcohol outcomes. These findings lend support to the risk factor model of AS on alcohol problems (but not consumption) through anxiety and the scar/complication model whereby alcohol problems may exacerbate AS later in adolescence. Addressing reciprocal risk processes between AS, anxiety, and alcohol problems warrant consideration in adolescent behavioral health promotion for various racial/ethnic populations.

Anxiety sensitivity and suicide risk: Mindfulness as a psychological buffer for Black adults

BACKGROUND

Anxiety sensitivity (AS), defined as the fear of anxiety-related sensations, is associated with increased risk for suicide and related behavior. However, investigations of AS have centered on primarily non-Hispanic White men and women and with limited attention to clinically relevant underlying factors.

METHODS

The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine the indirect effect of AS on suicide ideation and elevated suicide risk through mindfulness in a sample of 307 Black adults (79.2% female; M_age = 22.4, SD = 5.6). Participants completed an online questionnaire battery that included measures of AS, mindfulness, suicide ideation, and elevated suicide risk.

RESULTS

After controlling for age and gender, results indicated that AS was directly and indirectly associated with suicide ideation and elevated suicide risk via lower levels of mindfulness.

LIMITATIONS

Limitations include using a cross-sectional methodological design and exclusive reliance on self-report measures.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings provide preliminary insight into novel risk and protective factors that influence suicide ideation and elevated suicide risk among Black Americans.

Psychometric properties of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 in adults with substance use disorders

Anxiety sensitivity, or the fear of anxiety-related sensations, has demonstrated relevance to a broad range of psychiatric conditions, including substance use disorders (SUDs). Anxiety sensitivity is typically measured through self-report instruments, most commonly the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3). Despite the widespread use of the ASI-3 in studies of SUDs, little is known about its psychometric properties within this population. Patients on an inpatient detoxification unit seeking treatment for SUDs (N = 1248) completed a battery of self-report measures, including the ASI-3. Psychometric properties of the ASI-3 were examined. An exploratory factor analysis with half of the sample (n = 624) supported a 3-factor structure corresponding to the ASI-3 subscales (Social Concerns, Cognitive Concerns, Physical Concerns). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate this 3-dimensional structure in a separate subsample (n = 624), resulting in adequate fit when testing a second-order hierarchical model. Internal consistency and convergent and discriminant validity results also supported the use of the ASI-3 in people with SUDs. Despite its widespread use in SUD research, this is the first psychometric investigation of the ASI-3 among individuals seeking treatment for SUDs.

Cognitive vulnerabilities to anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents: A 3-year longitudinal study

OBJECTIVE

This study established cognitive vulnerability of anxiety symptoms among high school students.

METHOD

A total of 72 grade 9-11 students completed measures on levels of anxiety sensitivity (AS), selective attentional processing, and anxiety symptoms annually between 2016 and 2018.

RESULTS

Latent class growth analysis (unconditional model) showed a four-class model: High (stable) (6.94%), low (stable) (11.11%), medium (decreasing) (61.11%), and medium (increasing) (20.83%). The conditioned model controlling for the physical-concerns dimension of AS and negative attentional bias demonstrated that a two-class model consisted of a low anxiety class (n = 59, 81.9%) and a high anxiety class (n = 13, 18.1%) provided the best fit for the data. Negative attentional bias is a significant factor related to the development of anxiety trajectories.

CONCLUSION

Attentional bias modification to disengage from negative stimuli may serve as a potential target of intervention to reduce chronic anxiety among high school students.

Computer-delivered personalized feedback intervention for hazardous drinkers with elevated anxiety sensitivity: A pilot randomized controlled trial

Hazardous drinkers with emotional vulnerabilities (e.g., elevated anxiety sensitivity) remain an underserved group. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a single session remotely-delivered personalized feedback intervention (PFI) targeting alcohol (mis)use and anxiety sensitivity among college students. Hazardous drinkers with elevated anxiety sensitivity (N = 125; 76.8% female; M_age = 22.14; 66.4% racial/ethnic minorities) were randomized to receive the integrated PFI (n = 63) or attention control (n = 62). Follow-up assessments were conducted one-week, one-month and three-months post-intervention. Latent growth curve modeling was used to test pilot outcomes. It was feasible to recruit and retain hazardous drinking students with elevated anxiety sensitivity through follow-up with no group differences in retention. The integrated PFI was rated as more acceptable than the control with medium/large differences (p's < 0.004; d's = 0.54-0.80). The integrated PFI group had statistically significantly greater change in primary outcomes: motivation, hazardous alcohol use, and anxiety sensitivity (p's < 0.05; d's = 0.08-0.37) with larger within-group effect sizes (d's = 0.48-0.61) than in control (d's = 0.26-0.54). Despite a small sample size, this one-session intervention offers promise among a high-risk group of drinkers with emotional vulnerabilities. The computer-based format may allow for mass distribution of a low-cost intervention in the future; however, follow-up testing in larger samples is needed.

COVID-19 and Anxiety Sensitivity Across Two Studies in Argentina: Associations with COVID-19 Worry, Symptom Severity, Anxiety, and Functional Impairment

Background

The novel 2019 SARS2-Coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a devastating physical health, mental health, and economic impact, causing millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths. While COVID-19 has impacted the entire world, COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted low-income countries, particularly in South America, causing not only increased mortality but also increased associated mental health complaints. Anxiety sensitivity (AS), reflecting fear of anxiety-related physical sensations, may be particularly important to understand COVID-19 mental health effects among Latinx individuals in South America (Argentina). Past work suggests that Latinx individuals report greater somatization of mental health symptoms, and AS has been specifically linked to greater mental health symptoms. Yet, to date, no work has examined AS as a vulnerability factor for the negative mental health effects of COVID-19.

Method

Therefore, the current manuscript examined the association of AS with COVID-19 worry, functional impairment, anxiety, and symptom severity across two samples of adults in Argentina: a community sample (n = 105, M _age  = 38.58, SD = 14.07, 69.5% female) and a clinical sample comprised of individuals with an anxiety disorder (n = 99, M _age  = 34.99, SD = 10.83, 66.7% female).

Results

Results from the current study provide support for AS as a potential vulnerability factor for COVID-19-related mental health problems across both samples, and these effects were evident over and above the variance accounted for by age, sex, pre-existing medical conditions, and COVID-19 exposure.

Conclusions

These data identify AS as a potential intervention target to reduce COVID-19 mental health burden among adults in Argentina.

Anxiety sensitivity and pain intensity independently predict opioid misuse and dependence in chronic pain patients

The United States (US) population consumes an estimated 68% of the world's prescribed opioids each year, and over 2 million adults in the US suffer from an opioid use disorder. Although chronic pain populations are among the highest risk segments of the general population for opioid misuse and dependence, there is little understanding of individual risk characteristics that may contribute to greater risk for these outcomes among this group. The present investigation explored the concurrent role of anxiety sensitivity and pain intensity and their interaction in relation to opioid misuse and dependence among 429 adults with chronic pain (73.9% female, M_age = 38.32 years, SD = 11.07). Results revealed that both anxiety sensitivity and pain intensity were associated with opioid misuse and dependence. There was no evidence of an interaction for either outcome. Post-hoc analyses indicated that of the lower-order anxiety sensitivity facets, physical and mental incapacitation concerns contributed to variance in opioid misuse and only mental incapacitation concerns contributed to variance in opioid dependence. Overall, the current findings suggest the importance of assessing anxiety sensitivity in screening for opioid-related problems among persons with chronic pain, as it may represent a distinct pathway to poorer opioid-related outcomes among this group.

Pain severity and anxiety sensitivity interact to predict drinking severity among hazardous drinking college students

Background: Hazardous alcohol use among college students is a growing problem. Alcohol is commonly used in the context of pain due to acute analgesic effects, although the role of pain among hazardous drinkers has not been examined. Little is known regarding factors that may moderate pain-alcohol relations. One factor is anxiety sensitivity, which reflects the fear of physiological sensations. Pain severity and anxiety sensitivity may interact such that those with high anxiety sensitivity may have stronger pain-alcohol relations.Objectives: The current study examined interactive associations of pain severity and anxiety sensitivity in relation to hazardous drinking severity, alcohol consumption, and alcohol problems among hazardous drinking college students (n = 370; 78.1% female).Methods: Self report measures of alcohol use, pain severity, and anxiety sensitivity were collected and moderation analyses were conducted.Results: There was a significant interaction of pain severity and anxiety sensitivity in relation to hazardous drinking severity (β = 0.25, p = .037); pain severity was significantly related to hazardous drinking for high (β = 0.28, p < .001) but not low (β = 0.09, p = .202) anxiety sensitivity. There was a similar interaction for alcohol consumption (β = 0.35, p = .008). For alcohol problems, there was no significant interaction, but there were unique main effects of both pain severity (β = 0.23, p < .001) and anxiety sensitivity (β = 0.34, p < .001).Conclusions: These findings suggest that drinkers with high anxiety sensitivity may use alcohol hazardously (and in greater quantities) in the context of pain. If replicated with longitudinal samples, the findings may inform clinical practice in terms of screening for and treatment of anxiety sensitivity.

An investigation of racial and ethnic differences in e-cigarette beliefs and use characteristics

In this study we provide information on e-cigarette use characteristics in relation to racial and ethnic characteristics in a sample of 535 adult e-cigarette users. We also evaluated how anxiety sensitivity (AS; fear of anxiety) interacted with race/ethnicity to predict vaping outcomes. We found an association between greater AS and higher e-cigarette dependence for White, but not Black, participants. A similar trend was observed for level of risk perception. Also, Hispanic status was associated with higher perception of e-cigarette benefits. Overall, the present study contributes to the understanding of factors linked to e-cigarette use.

The prevalence and impact of elevated anxiety sensitivity among hazardous drinking college students

Hazardous drinking is prevalent among college students, yet few seek treatment. Anxiety sensitivity AS is one factor with relevance to drinking. Yet, there are no known estimates of the prevalence of elevated AS among hazardous drinkers. The current study sought to estimate the prevalence of elevated AS among hazardous drinking college students and to examine relations between AS and hazardous drinking. Data from 1257 students Mage = 22.08; 80.4 % female; 76.8 % racial/ethnic minorities was employed. Approximately one third (30.7 %) of the sample met criteria for hazardous drinking. Among hazardous drinkers, 77.5 % had clinically elevated AS; similar rates were evidenced across sex and race/ethnicity. Hazardous drinkers reported significantly greater AS scores than moderate drinkers and non-drinkers (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.09). Those with elevated AS were more than three times more likely to be hazardous drinkers (p < 0.001). Among hazardous drinkers, those with elevated AS had more severe drinking levels (p < 0.001; Cohen's d=0.07) as well as greater likelihood, number, and disturbance related to use of other substances (p's from <0.001-0.005; Cohen's d's from 0.01 to 0.02). Findings from this study suggest that most hazardous drinkers have elevated AS, and that elevated AS is associated with a substantially higher likelihood of being a hazardous drinker. Hazardous drinkers with elevated AS report more severe drinking and other substance use than those with normative AS. There may be practical clinical benefit of implementing focus on AS to reduce hazardous drinking in college settings.

Anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette smoking and other substance use in African American smokers

Anxiety sensitivity (AS)-fearfulness of anxiety symptoms-has been implicated in the etiology of emotional disorders (e.g., depressive and anxiety disorders) and linked to cigarette smoking and other substance use (SU). However, studies examining AS in relation to SU primarily have been conducted with racially/ethnically heterogeneous or mostly European American samples. Hence, this cross-sectional study involving secondary analysis of baseline data focused on investigating associations of AS with cigarette smoking and other SU in a sample of 630 non-treatment-seeking African American smokers (37.3% female; M age = 49.6 years; M cigarettes smoked per day = 15.4). After screening out individuals with non-nicotine substance dependence, participants reported their demographics, AS, dysphoria symptoms (i.e., depression and anxiety symptoms), and SU. In regression analyses controlling for dysphoria symptoms, age, education level, income level, and years of regular smoking, AS was positively associated with tobacco withdrawal severity (β = .12, p = .007), overall smoking motives (β = .17, p < .001), alcohol use problems (β = .12, p = .005), and other (non-nicotine, nonalcohol) SU problems (β = .16, p < .001). Though lacking the passage of time between assessments needed to provide strong evidence of mediation, unplanned analyses further revealed indirect associations of AS with several SU variables through dysphoria symptoms. Current findings are consistent with those found in prior samples and suggest that AS is similarly related to SU in African Americans, who may benefit from interventions that have been helpful in improving AS, dysphoria symptoms, and SU in other groups. Computer-delivered personalized feedback intervention for hazardous drinkers with elevated anxiety sensitivity: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Integrated treatments for hazardous drinking and anxiety/depression are virtually nonexistent. Anxiety sensitivity is a common mechanism for both anxiety/depression and hazardous drinking. This article presents a study protocol for the development and testing of an integrated remotely delivered anxiety sensitivity/hazardous drinking personalized feedback intervention. Hazardous drinking college students with elevated anxiety sensitivity (n = 130) will be randomly assigned to a single session of a novel integrated personalized feedback intervention for anxiety sensitivity/hazardous drinking or control condition. Follow-ups will occur at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. This study will serve as an initial test and proof of concept for an integrated anxiety sensitivity/hazardous drinking personalized feedback intervention.

Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 in Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Background

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a trait-like predisposing factor for the prevalence of anxiety in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) has been widely used in both general and clinical samples for measuring AS. However, the data about its psychometric properties in women with breast cancer are deficient. In addition, there is no evidence proving the measure equivalence of ASI-3 across sociodemographic variables in the specific sample. Thus, the present study examined the psychometric properties and conducted measure equivalence testing of ASI-3 in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Methods

This study included 815 Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. Single group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was administrated to detect the factorial validity of ASI-3, and multigroup CFAs were conducted to test the measurement equivalence of ASI-3 across various sociodemographic variables. The reliability of ASI-3 was tested by Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Guttman split-half coefficient, McDonald's omega coefficient, and test-retest coefficient. The standardized factor loadings, construct reliability, and the average variance extracted of factors were used to measure the construct validity of ASI-3, and the partial correlations were conducted to examine the criterion-related validity of ASI-3.

Results

The ASI-3 had satisfactory reliability and validity in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer; three-factor model fitted the data well in CFA and reached partial strict invariances across age, education, and residence groups.

Conclusion

This study explored the psychometric properties and measurement invariance across sociodemographic variables of ASI-3 in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. Our results not only proved that the ASI-3 is an appropriate instrument for measuring AS but also deepened the understanding of ASI-3 in Chinese women with malignancy.

Not the exercise type? Personality traits and anxiety sensitivity as predictors of objectively measured physical activity and sedentary time

Personality traits have been investigated as predictors of sedentary behavior, while both personality traits and anxiety sensitivity have been investigated as predictors of physical activity; however, few studies employed objective measurement of these behaviors. The current study recruited 64 young adults who completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 and NEO-Personality Inventory-3, then wore accelerometers for 1 week. Results revealed that agreeableness and anxiety sensitivity were inversely associated with moderate intensity or greater physical activity; however, none of the investigated constructs predicted sedentary time. These results highlight the importance of objective measurement when studying these behaviors and clinical implications for the identification of individuals at risk for physical activity avoidance.

Anxiety sensitivity and opioid misuse and dependence among trauma-exposed adults with chronic pain

It is unclear if anxiety sensitivity may serve as mechanism underlying the relation between posttraumatic stress symptom severity and opioid misuse and dependence among trauma-exposed persons with chronic pain. Therefore, the current study evaluated the explanatory role of anxiety sensitivity in the relations between posttraumatic stress symptom severity and opioid misuse and dependence. Participants included 294 trauma-exposed adults with chronic pain (71.4% female, M_age = 37.79 years, SD = 10.85, M_{pain rating} = 7.32/10) that reported current moderate to severe chronic pain and prescription opioid use. Participants were recruited via an online national survey in the United States of America. There were statistically significant indirect effects of posttraumatic stress symptom severity via anxiety sensitivity in relation to opioid misuse and dependence. The indirect effects of the reverse models for opioid misuse and dependence also were significant and suggest the potential for bi-directional relations; however, the magnitude of the effect was smaller in the tests of specificity than in the original models. The present findings provide initial empirical evidence that greater posttraumatic stress symptom severity is related to anxiety sensitivity, which in turn, is associated with increased opioid misuse and dependence among trauma-exposed individuals with chronic pain.

Acculturative Stress, Anxiety Sensitivity, and Smoking among Spanish-Speaking Latinx Adult Smokers

Objectives: Although acculturative stress is a known individual difference factor related to poor health, little is understood about its relationship to smoking among Latinx adults. One transdiagnostic factor that may serve a mediational role in the relation between acculturative stress and smoking is anxiety sensitivity. The current study evaluated whether anxiety sensitivity mediated the relations between acculturative stress and smoking among a large sample of adult Spanish-speaking Latinx smokers. Method: Participants were 359 Spanish-speaking Latinx daily smokers (58.8% female, M_age= 33.2 years, SD = 9.7) who provided self-report data on acculturative stress, anxiety sensitivity, and smoking outcomes of cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for quitting cigarettes, and severity of problems during past quit attempts. Independent mediation models were conducted for each smoking outcome, with acculturative stress entered as the predictor and anxiety sensitivity entered as the proposed explanatory factor. Results: There were statistically significant indirect effects of acculturative stress via anxiety sensitivity in relation to cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for quitting cigarettes, and severity of problems during past quit attempts. Conclusions: The present findings provide novel evidence that anxiety sensitivity serves a mediational role in relations between acculturative stress and smoking outcomes among Latinx adult smokers.

Emotional responding: Integration of multiple constructs and association with psychological health

OBJECTIVE

Numerous psychological constructs exist to describe different facets of emotional responding, but they have rarely been examined together. We empirically modeled the associations between four psychological constructs (mindfulness, emotional nonacceptance, experiential avoidance, and anxiety sensitivity) of individuals' responses to their affective experience, hypothesizing that a bifactor model would fit the data best.

METHOD

We used exploratory structural equation modeling, a novel latent variable modeling framework, to compare five measurement models of emotional responding in an online community sample (N = 307).

RESULTS

A bifactor model including a general emotional responding factor had substantial factor loadings from nearly all items, with mixed results for specific factors. Exploratory analyses supported the significant association of avoidant emotional responding and psychopathology/well-being.

CONCLUSION

The general avoidant emotional responding factor appears to overlap most directly with experiential avoidance and may be a transtheoretical construct relevant to mental health.

The impact of methodological and measurement factors on transdiagnostic associations with intolerance of uncertainty: A meta-analysis

Intolerance of uncertainty is a dispositional trait associated with a range of psychological disorders, but the influence of methodological factors on theses associations remains unknown. The first aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the strengths of the association between IU and symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, and eating disorders. The second aim was to assess the influence of methodological factors on these relationships, including clinical (vs. non-clinical) status, age group, sex, IU measure, and symptom measure. We extracted 181 studies (N participants = 52,402) reporting 335 independent effect sizes (Pearson's r). Overall, there was a moderate association between IU and symptoms (r = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.50-0.52), although heterogeneity was high (I² = 83.50, p < .001). Some small but significant moderator effects emerged between and within disorders. Effect sizes were not impacted by sample size. The results indicate that IU has robust, moderate associations with a range of disorder symptoms, providing definitive evidence for the transdiagnostic nature of IU.
