Abstract
OBJECTIVE Numerous studies have demonstrated that neutrophil/HDL ratio (NHR), lymphocyte/HDL ratio (LHR), monocyte/HDL (MHR) ratio, platelet/HDL ratio (PHR), neutrophil/ALB ratio (NAR) and platelet/ALB ratio (PAR) can serve as systemic inflammation and oxidative stress markers in a variety of diseases. However, few studies have estimated the associations of these markers with unipolar depression (UD) and bipolar depression (BD), as well as psychotic symptoms in UD and BD. METHODS 6297 UD patients, 1828 BD patients and 7630 healthy subjects were recruited. The differences in these indicators among different groups were compared, and the influencing factors for the occurrence of UD or BD and psychotic symptoms were analyzed. RESULTS These ratios displayed unique variation patterns across different diagnostic groups. BD group exhibited higher NHR, LHR, MHR, NAR and lower PAR than UD and HC groups, UD group showed higher MHR than HC group. The psychotic UD group had higher NHR, LHR, MHR and NAR than non-psychotic UD group. Higher LHR, MHR, NAR and lower PAR were risk factors in BD when compared to UD group. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated differences in inflammation and oxidative stress profile between UD and BD patients, as well as between subjects with or without psychotic symptom exist, highlighting the role of inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of UD and BD.

Abstract
Background Generalized convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE) is one of the most challenging life-threatening neurological emergencies. If GCSE becomes super-refractory, it is associated with significant mortality. Although aggressive management of prolonged status epilepticus was conducted, the mortality has not decreased since the late 1990s. Objectives The present study aimed to explore the risk factors for progression to super-refractory in patients with generalized convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE). Moreover, we illustrated the risk factors for mortality in GCSE patients. Design An observational retrospective cohort study. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of patients with GCSE admitted to our neurocritical unit, in Guangzhou, China, from October 2010 to February 2021. The data of sociodemographic information, etiology, laboratory results, treatment, and prognosis were collected and analyzed. Results A total of 106 patients were enrolled; 51 (48%) of them developed super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that patients with autoimmune encephalitis (p = 0.015) and intracranial infection (p = 0.019) are likely to progress to SRSE. The in-hospital mortality was 11.8% and 9.1% for patients in the SRSE and non-SRSE groups, respectively (p = 0.652). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR) at admission were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. Up to 31.4% of SRSE patients and 29.1% of non-SRSE patients died within 6 months after discharge (p = 0.798). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that plasma exchange (PE) was a protective factor for 6-month mortality. A high NLR at discharge was a risk factor for 6-month mortality. Conclusion In the current study, about 48% of GCSE patients progressed to SRSE. Regarding etiology, autoimmune encephalitis or intracranial infection was prone to SRSE. No significant differences were observed in the in-hospital and 6-month mortality between SRSE and non-SRSE groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that NLR at admission and discharge was an independent predictor of in-hospital and 6-month mortality, respectively. Moreover, PE significantly reduced the 6-month mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies show that inflammation is related to the pathogenesis of acute mania of bipolar disorder. Neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (NHR), lymphocyte/HDL ratio (LHR), monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR) and platelet/HDL ratio (PHR) have recently been investigated as novel markers of inflammation. In addition, the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and atherogenic coefficient (AC) are the leading atherogenic indices. The study aimed to investigate these inflammation and atherogenic index markers in acute mania of bipolar disorder. Another aim was to determine whether there is a relationship between these markers and disease severity and psychotic symptoms. METHODS A total of 109 BD-M and 101 (HC) were enrolled in the study. The differences in NHR, LHR, MHR, PHR, AIP and AC and their association with illness severity and psychotic symptoms were analyzed after adjusting for age, sex, total cholesterol level, body-mass index and smoking status. Then, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to analyze these parameters' diagnostic potential. Moreover, the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale for use in bipolar illness-Severity subscale (CGI-BP-S) were used to assess the severity of clinical symptoms. RESULTS We found higher levels of NHR, MHR, PHR and AIP, but not LHR and AC, after adjusting confounding factors in patients with BD-M compared to HCs. In logistic regression analysis, higher levels of MHR and NHR were associated with BD-M. MHR, NHR and PHR were predictors for differentiating the BD-M group from the HC group. However, the severity of the illness or the psychotic feature of the manic episode did not significantly affect the parameters. In the ROC curve analysis of BD-M, the indicators with an area under the curve (AUC) higher than 0.6 were the MHR, NHR, PHR and LHR. CONCLUSIONS These results provide information about the role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of BD-M. Even after controlling for confounding factors, MHR, NHR, PHR and AIP are potential biomarkers for BD-M. Moreover, the increase in AIP may explain the co-morbidity between BD and cardiovascular diseases. However, the severity of the illness or the psychotic feature of the manic episode did not significantly affect the levels of inflammation ratios used in our study. Due to the low cost and widespread use of lipid metabolism and related inflammation rates, it may be beneficial to know the MHR, NHR, PHR and AIP levels in BD-M patients.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Schizophrenia with aggression often has an inflammatory abnormality. The monocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR), neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein ratio (NHR), platelet/high-density lipoprotein ratio (PHR) and lymphocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio (LHR) have lately been examined as novel markers for the inflammatory response. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between these new inflammatory biomarkers and aggression in schizophrenia patients. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 214 schizophrenia inpatients in our cross-sectional analysis. They were divided into the aggressive group (n = 94) and the non-aggressive group (n = 120) according to the Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS). The severity of schizophrenia was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The numbers of platelets (PLT), neutrophils (NEU), lymphocytes (LYM), monocytes (MON) and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) content from subjects were recorded. The NHR, PHR, MHR and LHR were calculated. We analyzed the differences between those indexes in these two groups, and further searched for the correlation between inflammatory markers and aggression. Results: Patients with aggression had higher positive symptom scores (p = 0.002). The values of PLT, MON, MHR and PHR in the aggressive group were considerably higher (p < 0.05). The NHR (r = 0.289, p < 0.01), LHR (r = 0.213, p < 0.05) and MHR (r = 0.238, p < 0.05) values of aggressive schizophrenia patients were positively correlated with the total weighted scores of the MOAS. A higher MHR (β = 1.529, OR = 4.616, p = 0.026) and positive symptom scores (β = 0.071, OR = 1.047, p = 0.007) were significant predictors of aggression in schizophrenia patients. Conclusions: The MHR and the positive symptom scores may be predictors of aggressive behavior in schizophrenia patients. The MHR, a cheap and simple test, may be useful as a clinical tool for risk stratification, and it may direct doctors’ prevention and treatment plans in the course of ordinary clinical care.

Abstract
Mood disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide and their incidence has significantly increased after the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the continuous surge in the number of people diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, the treatment methods for these conditions remain limited. A significant number of people either do not respond to therapy or discontinue the drugs due to their severe side effects. Therefore, alternative therapeutic interventions are needed. Previous studies have shown a correlation between immunological alterations and the occurrence of mental health disorders, yet immunomodulatory therapies have been barely investigated for combating psychiatric conditions. In this article, we have reviewed the immunological alterations that occur during the onset of mental health disorders, including microglial activation, an increased number of circulating innate immune cells, reduced activity of natural killer cells, altered T cell morphology and functionality, and an increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This article also examines key studies that demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy of anti-inflammatory medications in mental health disorders. These studies suggest that immunomodulation can potentially be used as a complementary therapy for controlling psychiatric conditions after careful screening of candidate drugs and consideration of their efficacy and side effects in clinical trials.

Abstract
Systemic inflammation is commonly reported in depression, with dysregulation of both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system documented. Obtaining ratios of neutrophils, platelets, and monocytes to counts of lymphocytes (NLR, PLR, MLR, respectively) represents a low-cost and easily reproducible measure of an individual's inflammatory burden that can be calculated effortlessly from routine clinical full white blood cell counts. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective acute antidepressant treatment for depression but is often limited by its cognitive side-effects. Here, we examined differences in blood cell ratios in subgroups of depressed patients (unipolar/bipolar, psychotic/non-psychotic, early-onset/late-onset) and ECT-related subgroups (responder/non-responder, remitter/non-remitter). We also explored the relationships between blood cell ratios and depression severity and immediate cognitive outcomes post-ECT. Our results show baseline NLR was raised in patients with psychotic depression. In the entire group of patients, significant negative correlations were noted between the PLR and SII and baseline HAM-D24 score, signifying that lower systemic inflammation is associated with more severe depressive symptoms. Significant positive correlations were noted between various blood cell ratios and mean time to recovery of orientation in the entire group of patients and in depression subgroups, indicating that increased peripheral inflammation is linked to worse cognitive outcomes post-ECT. Overall, our results suggest that assessment of blood cell ratios could be useful for predicting mood changes in patients at risk of developing depressive episodes or relapse following successful treatment or for identifying those at risk for cognitive side-effects following ECT.

Abstract
Inflammatory processes are associated with mood disorders, but data on pediatric patients are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between elevated neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) - a marker of inflammation and mood polarity (manic/depressed) in adolescents, admitted between 2010 and 2015 due to a mood disorder episode and to an adolescent inpatient ward. Electronic medical records of 305 patients (aged 10-19 years, 60.6% males) admitted during the study period due to a mood disorder episode were reviewed. Of these, 63 were diagnosed with manic episodes and 242 with depressive episodes. Multivariate analyses were used to compare NLR between and within the two groups, covarying for age, sex, and antipsychotic use. NLR was significantly higher in the manic episode group compared with the depression one. Moreover, in inpatients with multiple hospitalizations, the NLR was higher during their manic episodes than that during their nonmanic states. These results suggest that, as has been reported in adults with bipolar disorder, inflammatory mechanisms may be involved in adolescents' mood disorders as well, particularly in the manic episodes. Thus, clinicians may consider adding anti-inflammatories as part of the treatment of these patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is a growing amount of evidence to suggest that inflammation may have a role in the onset and prognosis of psychiatric disorders. We reviewed the literature of studies investigating neutrophil-lymphocyte ratios (NLR), a biomarker of inflammation, in both adult and youth psychiatric populations. The limitations of NLR, in addition to the potential mechanisms underlying its relationship with psychiatric disorders, are also discussed. RECENT FINDINGS Unlike in the general population, NLR is elevated in a proportion of adult patients with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, though associations with symptom severity and other clinical parameters are less clear. When compared to baseline, reductions in NLR are sometimes reported after treatment and remission. Results in youth populations largely resemble findings obtained from adult samples, even though youth studies are far fewer in number. SUMMARY The consistent findings of elevated NLR across the reviewed psychiatric disorders suggest that abnormal NLR is not specific to any one disorder but may reflect a pathological brain process that leads to brain dysfunction. These findings support hypotheses of neuroinflammation being important to the etiology of psychiatric disorders. More research is needed to further elucidate the relationship between specific diagnostic and behavioural constructs and NLR. Future work is also needed to determine the specific neuroinflammatory mechanisms that give rise to specific disorders.

Bipolar disorder (BD) has been previously associated with clinical signs of premature aging, including accelerated epigenetic aging in blood and brain, and a steeper age-related decline in cognitive function. However, the clinical drivers and cognitive correlates of epigenetic aging in BD are still unknown. We aimed to investigate the relationship between multiple measures of epigenetic aging acceleration with clinical, functioning, and cognitive outcomes in patients with BD and controls. Blood genome-wide DNA methylation levels were measured in BD patients (n = 153) and matched healthy controls (n = 50) with the Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip (Illumina). Epigenetic age estimates were calculated using an online tool, including the recently developed lifespan predictor GrimAge, and analyzed with generalized linear models controlling for demographic variables and blood cell proportions. BD was significantly associated with greater GrimAge acceleration (AgeAccelGrim, β=0.197, p = 0.009), and significant group-dependent interactions were found between AgeAccelGrim and blood cell proportions (CD4+ T-lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, and B-cells). Within patients, higher AgeAccelGrim was associated with worse cognitive function in multiple domains (short-term affective memory (β=-0.078, p = 0.030), short-term non-affective memory (β=-0.088, p = 0.018), inhibition (β=0.064, p = 0.046), and problem solving (β=-0.067, p = 0.034)), age of first diagnosis with any mood disorder (β=-0.076, p = 0.039) or BD (β=-0.102, p = 0.016), as well as with current non-smoking status (β=-0.392, p < 0.001). Overall, our findings support the contribution of epigenetic factors to the aging-related cognitive decline and premature mortality reported in BD patients, with an important driving effect of smoking in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is substantial evidence to support that the alterations in the immune-inflammation system play a crucial role in the pathogenic mechanism of affective disorders. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been recently investigated as simple, rapid, and inexpensive inflammation markers. The purpose of the research is to use large-scale clinical data to study the difference of the inflammation ratios in first-episode MDD, recurrent MDD, BD depressive episodes and manic episode. METHODS A cross-sectional design was applied to retrospectively analyse the data that were extracted from electronic health records. A total of 16,174 Chinese affective disorder patients were enrolled in this study, and 6681 healthy subjects served as controls. The differences in the NLR, MLR, PLR and whole blood count data among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of MDD and BD were analysed. RESULTS First-episode and recurrent MDD patients exhibited significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to healthy controls. Compared with the MDD patients, the BD patients showed higher NLRs and MLRs and lower PLRs. Further analysis showed that the BD manic episode patients had significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to patients with BD depressive episodes or MDD. MLR was a risk factor for the occurrence of MDD and that the NLR and MLR were risk factors for the occurrence of BD. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD, particularly during manic BD episodes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) are markers of inflammation that are elevated in bipolar disorder (BD) and are also related to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed at investigating for the first time the association between NLR, PLR, and CRP and the metabolic status in BD. METHODS We assessed the association between biomarkers and the metabolic status: number of metabolic risk factors, presence of MetS, insulin sensitivity (Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index, QUICKI) and insulin resistance (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance, HOMA-IR index), in a sample of 219 outpatients with BD. RESULTS 25.9% of the sample met the criteria for MetS. High levels of CRP were found in 12% of the sample. Older age, low PLR, high NLR, and high CRP levels significantly predicted a higher number of MetS risk factors (p < 0.001). Older age and low PLR were associated with a greater likelihood of developing MetS (p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Although further studies are needed to replicate and validate these findings, inflammatory biomarkers as CRP, PLR and NLR could be useful tools to identify patients with a BD at risk for a metabolic adverse outcome.

Abstract
Background and objectives Neutrophil, lymphocyte counts, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, fibrinogen, and comorbid illness are associated with the course and prognosis of COVID-19. However, the course of acute severe psychiatric disorders overlapping with COVID-19 infection was not investigated and remained as an unclarified research area. This study aimed to demonstrate inflammatory markers and the course of patients suffering from both conditions. Methods Thirty-eight inpatients with COVID-19 and comorbid acute psychiatric disorders (COVID-19+PD), 31 inpatients with COVID-19, and 38 inpatients with an acute psychiatric disorder (PD) were included in the study. Neutrophil, lymphocyte counts, serum ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, fibrinogen, Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were compared to evaluate inflammation levels. Results Patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection had older age compared to the PD group. CALL (Comorbidity, age, lymphocyte, lactate dehydrogenase) scores which predict the progression risk in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, of both COVID-19 groups were found similar. The COVID-19+PD had higher SII in the study sample. Additionally, the COVID-19+PD group had higher NLR, ferritin, and CRP levels than those of the PD group. Conclusions The prognosis of COVID-19 is not worse when accompanied by a psychiatric disorder. Laboratory assessment can guide clinicians to distinguish those infected with SARS-CoV-2 within psychiatric inpatient units. The biochemical assessment did not robustly support higher inflammatory levels in the comorbid COVID-19 and psychiatric disorder group compared to the COVID-19 group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), system inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (NHR), lymphocyte/HDL ratio (LHR), monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR), and platelet/HDL ratio (PHR) have been recently investigated as new markers for inflammation. The purpose of this research is to use large-scale clinical data to discuss and compare the predictive ability of the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), to investigate potential biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective, naturalistic, cross-sectional study, we collected the hematological parameter data of 13,329 patients with SCZ, 4,061 patients with BD manic episodes (BD-M), and 1,944 patients with BD depressive episodes (BD-D), and 5,810 healthy subjects served as the healthy control (HC) group. The differences in the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR were analyzed, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic potential of these parameters. RESULTS Compared with the HC group, the values of the SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, and PHR and the levels of neutrophils, monocytes, and triglycerides (TG) were higher in SCZ and BD groups, and levels of platelets, cholesterol (CHO), HDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and apoprotein B (Apo B) were lower in SCZ and BD groups. Compared to the BD group, the values of the SIRI, lymphocytes, monocytes, and HDL were lower and the values of the SII, NHR, PHR, and platelet were higher in the SCZ group. In contrast to the BD-D group, the values of the SII; SIRI; NHR; and MHR; and levels of neutrophils, monocytes, and platelets were higher in the BD-M group, and the levels of CHO, TG, LDL, and Apo B were lower in the BD-M group. The MHR and NHR were predictors for differentiating the SCZ group from the HC group; the SIRI, NHR, and MHR were predictors for differentiating the BD-M group from the HC group; and the MHR was a predictor for differentiating the BD-D group from the HC group. The combination model of the indicators improved diagnostic effectiveness. CONCLUSION Our study highlights the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of SCZ, BD-M, and BD-D, the association between inflammation and lipid metabolism, and these inflammation and lipid metabolism indicators showed different variation patterns in SCZ, BD-D, and BD-M.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorders (BDs), the most severe types of mood disorders (MDs), are considered as among the most disabling illnesses worldwide. Several studies suggested that inflammatory neuroinflammation might be involved in the pathophysiology of MDs, while reporting increasing data on the relationships between these processes and classical neurotransmitters, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), and neurotrophic factors. The assessment of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in peripheral blood represents a simple method to evaluate the inflammatory status. The aim of the present paper was to review the literature on the possible relationships between NLR, PLR and MLR in MDs, and to comment on their possible wider use in clinical research. Thirty-five studies were included in the present review. The majority of them higher values of these parameters, particularly NLR values, in patients with MDs, when compared to healthy subjects. The increase would appear more robust in patients with BD during a manic episode, thus indicating that it could be considered as both state and trait markers. In addition, increased NLR and PLR levels seem to represent prognostic elements for the early discovery of post-stroke depression. The findings of the present review would indicate the need to carry our further studies in this field. In particular, NLR, PLR and MLR seem to be promising tools to detect economically and easily the activation of the inflammatory system, and to perhaps evaluate the etiology and course of MDs. Again, they could suggest some information to better understand the relationship between inflammatory and cardiovascular disease and MDs, and thus, to provide clinical implications in terms of management and treatment.

Abstract
Background: Several studies have found an association between elevated neutrophil count or neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in peripheral blood from patients with schizophrenia. The etiology behind this effect is unknown, and it is unclear if changes in neutrophil count and NLR may be induced by antipsychotics or if these parameters relate to the diagnosis and symptoms of schizophrenia. The purpose of this scoping review was to map research that explores this association, and to identify gaps in the current knowledge base. Method: The work was conducted in accordance with established methodological standards for scoping reviews. Studies on neutrophil count and NLR in schizophrenia were identified through search in relevant databases, and a parallel screening procedure was performed to ensure validity and reproducibility of the search. Articles that included different comparison groups, with differences in medication status (drug-naïve or drug-free vs. medicated), current disease state (relapse vs. remission), or treatment response, were included, as well as studies evaluating the association between symptomatology and neutrophil count or NLR. Results: The available literature was limited with substantial differences in aims, methods, and outcomes. In total, 13 articles were included for the synthesis of this review. Some interesting trends were identified: Neutrophil count and NLR seem to be elevated in schizophrenia patients regardless of current or past use of antipsychotic therapy. Neutrophil count and NLR correlated significantly with positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Still, these findings should be interpreted with caution due to considerable methodological differences and weaknesses in the literature, particularly concerning the blood sampling procedure. Conclusion: By including longitudinal studies and by comparing patient groups based on medication status, disease state and response, our study provides a basis for dissecting the associations between increased neutrophil count or NLR and a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Further research should investigate and quantify the apparent strong correlation between neutrophil count or NLR and positive symptoms in schizophrenia, to evaluate its clinical potential to guide diagnostics, treatment, or as a predictor of outcome. This review also exposes important methodological weaknesses in the literature on neutrophil count and NLR measurements. Standardization of blood sampling and processing is crucial to reduce bias, and factors that are known to influence leukocyte levels need to be accounted for.

Abstract
Ruptured intracranial aneurysms, as the leading cause of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), represents an emergency with high morbi-mortality. The comprehension of the underlying pathology that involves inflammatory and immune responses, through the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), could help to predict complications such as delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) or rebleeding and the functional outcome. Systematic review of English-based literature through PubMed and Biblioteca Vitural em Saúde (BVS) to find papers discussing the use of NLR in the aSAH setting. Area-under-curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristics (ROC), cutoff value, sensitivity, and specificity were retrieved. From 53 articles included, 4 papers were evaluated after exclusion criteria. Rebleeding could be predicted with a NLR cutoff value of 9.88 (sensitivity 72.3%, specificity 63.3%). The mean cutoff value for DCI was 12.85, with sensitivity 66.3% and specificity 75.8%. Finally, a worse 3-month functional outcome could be predicted with a mean sensitivity of 73.3% and a mean specificity of 54%. NLR is a new issue in scientific community, especially neurosurgery. The current understanding points to a multifactorial process after aSAH that emerges as alterations on the NLR. As a measurement readily available and cost-effect after admission of the patient, its use signals that patients that need expedite surgical treatment or more aggressive treatment for vasospasm. As other medical subspecialties already use this ratio to predict outcomes, the literature reviewed by this paper constitute the earliest clues that higher NLR predicts re-bleeding, DCI, and functional outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine which characteristics predict the time to a first mood recurrence at three years in Bipolar Disorder type I (BD-I) and type II (BD-II). METHODS Individuals with BD were followed up to 3 years. Turbull's extension of the Kaplan-Meier analysis for interval-censored data was used to estimate the cumulative probability of recurrence over time. Separate models were performed according to BD subtype to determine which baseline factors were predictive of recurrences and were adjusted for age, gender and educational level. RESULTS We included 630 individuals with BD-I and 505 with BD-II. The first recurrence of any polarity occurred earlier in BD-II (p = 0.03). The first depressive recurrence occurred earlier in BD-II (p < 0.0001), whereas the first (hypo)manic recurrence occurred earlier in BD-I (p = 0.0003). In BD-I, the clinical variables that were associated to the time to a first mood recurrence were depressive symptoms, lifetime rapid cycling, global activation and the number of psychotropic medications at baseline. In BD-II, the time to a first recurrence was associated with a younger age at onset of BD and a higher number of lifetime mood episodes. The Areas Under the Curve for both models were moderate. CONCLUSION Predictors of recurrences showed few specificities to BD-I or BD-II. The ability to predict recurrences in BD based on socio-demographic and clinical variables remained too moderate for a transfer in daily practice. This study highlights the need for further studies that would include other types of predictors, such as molecular, cognitive or neuro-imaging ones, to achieve an accurate level of prediction of recurrences in BD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main objective of this study was to compare neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a marker of systemic inflammation, between patients diagnosed with International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision (ICD-10) psychiatric disorders and control participants. DESIGN A cross-sectional methodology was employed to retrospectively analyse electronic health records and records derived from a national health survey. SETTING A secondary mental healthcare service consisting of four boroughs in South London. PARTICIPANTS A diverse sample of 13 888 psychiatric patients extracted from South London and Maudsley electronic health records database and 3920 control participants extracted from National Health and Nutrition Survey (2015-2016) were included in the study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Primary: NLR levels in patients with mental health diagnoses, NLR between patients with different mental health diagnoses. Secondary: relationship of NLR to length of hospitalisation and to mortality. RESULTS NLR was elevated compared with controls in patients with diagnoses including dementia, alcohol dependence, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depression, non-phobic anxiety disorders and mild mental retardation (p<0.05). NLR also correlated with age, antipsychotic use and hypnotic use. NLR was found to be higher in individuals of 'white' ethnicity and lower in individuals of 'black' ethnicity. Elevated NLR was associated with increased mortality (β=0.103, p=2.9e-08) but not with hospital admissions or face-to-face contacts. CONCLUSIONS Elevated NLR may reflect a transdiagnostic pathological process occurring in a subpopulation of psychiatric patients. NLR may be useful to identify and stratify patients who could benefit from adjunctive anti-inflammatory treatment.

Abstract
Zinc has been very efficacious in reducing post-weaning diarrhea, whereas animal-derived peptides are suggested to improve the growth performance of weaned piglets. However, the combined effect of zinc and peptides on swine production and swine gut microbiota is still largely unknown. In this study, we followed 288 nursery pigs from the age of d30 to d60 to evaluate the growth performance and gut microbiota of weanling pigs subjected to different levels of a fish-porcine-microbial peptide cocktail (0.05%, 0.25%, and 0.5%) with or without the pharmaceutical level of zinc oxide (ZnO) (2500 ppm) supplementation in a nutrient-deficient diet. Rectal swab samples were collected from pigs with body weight (BW) approach average at each pen on d30, d42, and d60 to determine gut microbiota. Average daily gain (ADG) and BW in piglets fed high zinc (HZ) increased with increasing levels of peptide. The microbiota of the HZ group also diverged from those of the standard zinc (SZ) group from d30 to d60. Adding peptide did not alter community structure regardless of zinc supplementation. Collectively, these findings demonstrated that the pharmaceutical level of zinc as ZnO conditioned the gut community to the point where peptide could effectively restore growth performance in nursery pigs fed nutrient-deficient diets.

Abstract
Background: Currently, increasing evidence supports the hypothesis that alterations in the immune-inflammatory system are critical for the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) have recently been investigated as inexpensive and simple inflammatory markers. Aims: The aim of this study is to compare NLR, PLR, MLR, and MPV in depressive, manic, and euthymic patients with BD and healthy controls, and to evaluate whether values of NLR, PLR, MLR, and MPV are possible state or trait biomarkers in BD. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted with 341 patients with BD (100 patients in a depressive state, 141 patients in a manic state, and 100 patients in a euthymic state) and 114 healthy controls. Results: We found that patients with BD in manic states had higher levels of MPV, NLR, and MLR, and patients with BD in depressive states had higher levels of MPV than the controls. Moreover, MPV predicted all states of BD, while NLR and MLR predicted the manic state of BD. Conclusions: NLR, MLR, and MPV obtained from simple and inexpensive blood tests were significantly higher in patients with BD than in healthy controls, which each imply low-grade inflammation. MPV may serve as a possible trait biomarker of BD, while NLR and MLR may both serve as possible state biomarkers of the manic state.
