Abstract
Herein, a novel surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) aptasensor was developed for amantadine (AMD) detection, based on magnetite nanoparticles coated with polyethylenimine, silver nanoclusters and aptamers (Fe3O4@PEI@AgNC-apt) as the capture probe and complementary DNA-modified gold nanorods (AuNRs@4-MPBA@Ag-c-DNA containing 4-mercaptophenylboric acid molecules) as the reporter probe. In the presence of AMD, the AMD and the reporter probe competed for the aptamer on the surface of the capture probe, resulting in the reporter probe detaching from the capture probe leading to a decrease in intensity of the SERS signal at 1067 cm-1 for 4-MPBA. Under optimal conditions, a good linear relationship was established between the SERS intensity at 1067 cm-1 and the logarithm of the AMD concentration over the range 10-6-102 mg L-1, with a LOD of 0.50 × 10-6 mg L-1. The AMD levels in spiked samples were evaluated using the SERS aptasensor, with good recoveries ranging from 90.57% to 113.49% being obtained.

Abstract
In this study, a porous coordination network zirconium-porphyrin-based nanoparticle with oxygen vacancies (OVs) was prepared using acetic acid and benzoic acid as modulators via a simple hydrothermal method. The presence of OVs was confirmed by various characterization methods and was found to enhance oxygen uptake and activation. This resulted in the generation of more reactive peroxyl radicals (•O2 -) and led to an improved oxidase (OXD) mimetic activity. Additionally, it promoted 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) oxidation, with a low Km value of 0.07 mM and a high Vmax of 1.47 × 10-7 M·s-1. As aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) inhibits the Pt@PCN-222-ABTS nanozyme system, a colorimetric probe for AFB1 detection was constructed. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.074 µg·L-1. This research presents a novel approach for designing a nanozymatic-based colorimetric method to analyze trace AFB1 residues in food.

Abstract
In this work, a new competitive immunosensor for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detection was developed using europium (Eu) fluorescent nanospheres and magnetic beads. Firstly, Eu nanospheres were synthesized through two steps including carboxylated polystyrene nanospheres and Eu-doped polystyrene nanospheres preparation. Then Eu nanospheres were covalently tagged to anti-AFB1 monoclonal antibody (anti-AFB1 mAb) through an EDC coupling method. Carboxylated Fe3O4 magnetic beads were conjugated to AFB1-BSA through EDC/NHS crosslinking to obtain AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4. In the absence of AFB1, Eu-anti-AFB1 mAb were incubated with AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4 to form Eu-anti-AFB1 mAb-AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4 in PBS buffer. However, in the presence of AFB1, the competitive interaction of AFB1 and AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4 to bind with Eu-anti-AFB1 mAb occurred. With the increasing concentration of AFB1, less Eu-anti-AFB1 mAb-AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4 formed. So the fluorescence intensity of Eu-anti-AFB1 mAb-AFB1-BSA-Fe3O4 was gradually decreased after magnetic separation. The degree of fluorescence decrease was linear with respect to the logarithm of AFB1 concentration in the range of 0.01-2 ng/mL in both buffer solution and feed samples and the detection limit was 0.003 ng/mL. What's more, the immunosensor showed excellent specificity for AFB1 without being interfered by other mycotoxins. In consideration of the excellent performance of this immunosensor, we can speculate that the proposed method could be widely used in detecting food contaminants.

Abstract
The implementation of low-cost and rapid technologies for the on-site detection of mycotoxin-contaminated crops is a promising solution to address the growing concerns of the agri-food industry. Recently, there have been significant developments in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for the direct detection of mycotoxins in food and feed. This review provides an overview of the most recent advancements in the utilization of SERS through the successful fabrication of novel nanostructured materials. Various bottom-up and top-down approaches have demonstrated their potential in improving sensitivity, while many applications exploit the immobilization of recognition elements and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) to enhance specificity and reproducibility in complex matrices. Therefore, the design and fabrication of nanomaterials is of utmost importance and are presented herein. This paper uncovers that limited studies establish detection limits or conduct validation using naturally contaminated samples. One decade on, SERS is still lacking significant progress and there is a disconnect between the technology, the European regulatory limits, and the intended end-user. Ongoing challenges and potential solutions are discussed including nanofabrication, molecular binders, and data analytics. Recommendations to assay design, portability, and substrate stability are made to help improve the potential and feasibility of SERS for future on-site agri-food applications.

Abstract
Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) derived from nature have received increasing attention and become more popular. Due to their diverse production processes, complex ingredients, and different storage conditions, it is highly desirable to develop simple, rapid, efficient and trace detection methods to ensure the drug quality. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy has the advantages of being time-saving, non-destructive, usable in aqueous environments, and highly compatible with various biomolecular samples, providing a promising analytical method for CHM. In this review, we outline the major advances in the application of SERS to the identification of raw materials, detection of bioactive constituents, characterization of adulterants, and detection of contaminants. This clearly shows that SERS has strong potential in the quality control of CHM, which greatly promotes the modernization of CHM.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by fungi in the process of infecting agricultural products, posing serious threat to the health of human and animals. Thus, sensitive and reliable analytical techniques for mycotoxin detection are needed. Biosensors equipped with antibodies or aptamers as recognition elements and core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) for the pre-treatment and detection of mycotoxins have been extensively studied. By comparison with monocomponent NPs, core-shell nanostructures exhibit unique optical, electric, magnetic, plasmonic, and catalytic properties due to the combination of functionalities and synergistic effects, resulting in significant improvement of sensing capacities in various platforms, such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence, lateral flow immunoassay and electrochemical sensors. This review focused on the development of core-shell NPs based biosensors for the sensitive and accurate detection of mycotoxins in food samples. Recent developments were categorised and summarised, along with detailed discussion of advantages and shortcomings. The future potential of utilising core-shell NPs in food safety testing was also highlighted.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination severely threatens human and animal health, it is thus critical to construct a strategy for its rapid, accurate, and visual detection. Herein, a multimodal biosensor was proposed based on CRISPR/Cas12a cleaved G-quadruplex (G4) for AFB1 detection. Briefly, specific binding of AFB1 to the aptamer occupied the binding site of the complementary DNA (cDNA), and cDNA then activated Cas12a to cleave G4 into fragments. Meanwhile, the intact G4-DNAzyme could catalyze 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form colourimetric/SERS/fluorescent signal-enhanced TMBox, and the yellow solution produced by TMBox under acidic conditions could be integrated with a smartphone application for visual detection. The colourimetric/SERS/fluorescent biosensor yielded detection limits of 0.85, 0.79, and 1.65 pg·mL-1, respectively, and was applied for detecting AFB1 in peanut, maize, and badam samples. The method is suitable for visual detection in naturally contaminated peanut samples and has prospective applications in the food industry.

Abstract
Aflatoxins have posed serious threat to food safety and human health. Therefore, it is important to detect aflatoxins in samples rapidly and accurately. In this review, various technologies to detect aflatoxins in food are discussed, including conventional ones such as thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA), radioimmunoassay (RIA), fluorescence spectroscopy (FS), as well as emerging ones (e.g., biosensors, molecular imprinting technology, surface plasmon resonance). Critical challenges of these technologies include high cost, complex processing procedures and long processing time, low stability, low repeatability, low accuracy, poor portability, and so on. Critical discussion is provided on the trade-off relationship between detection speed and detection accuracy, as well as the application scenario and sustainability of different technologies. Especially, the prospect of combining different technologies is discussed. Future research is necessary to develop more convenient, more accurate, faster, and cost-effective technologies to detect aflatoxins.

Abstract
In this work, cerium-doped carbon dots (Ce-CDs) both as a reducing agent and template hybrid gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with weak oxidase-like (OXD) activity was synthesized for the detection of Hg2+ and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The AuNPs can catalyze efficiently mercury ion (Hg2+) reduction to the metallic (Hg0) to form Au-Hg amalgam (Au@HgNPs). The obtained Au@HgNPs with strong OXD-like activity oxidize without Raman-active leucomalachite green (LMG) into the Raman-active malachite green (MG) and simultaneously as the SERS substrates by the formed Raman "hot spot" through MG-induced Au@HgNPs aggregation. While AFB1 was introduced resulting in the SERS intensity decreasing due to Hg2+ with AFB1 via carbonyl group to inhibit the aggregation of Au@HgNPs. The work paves a new path for the design of a nanozyme-based SERS protocol for tracing Hg2+ and AFB1 residues in foodstuff analysis.

Abstract
As a class I carcinogen, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in foods and feeds accounts for 75 % of the total mycotoxin contamination. In this work, a simple and reliable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method for sensitive and selective detection of AFB1 in peanut samples integrated with dummy molecularly imprinted polymers (DMIPs) is developed. N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 7-ethoxycoumarin (7-EOC) are chosen as monomer and dummy template, respectively and their ratio was screened through molecular design in both of kinetic and static adsorption views to form the optimal DMIPs. As-prepared dummy molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (DMISPE) could selectively enrich AFB1 from peanut samples. Finally, a liquid-liquid interface self-assembly constructed thioctic acid-decorated AgNPs monolayer film (TA-AgNPs MF) as a SERS-active substrate is employed to determine the amount of AFB1 eluted from DMISPE. SERS assay shows high detection sensitivity for AFB1 in peanut samples with limit of detection of 0.1 μg L-1 and a linear concentration relationship range from 0.1 to 10 μg L-1.

Abstract
A sandwich-structured SERS biosensor has been constructed for simultaneous detection of multiple pathogenic bacteria, consisting of non-interfering SERS probes for bacterial labeling and ConA-functionalizd magnetic nanoparticles for bacteria extraction. A the preparation method of PP3 SERS probe with high Raman activity is reported for the first time. Since the PP3 SERS probe has a very strong Raman peak at 2081 cm-1 in the "Raman silent region," the mixed SERS probe formed with MP1 and DP2 can meet the needs of multiple foodborne pathogen detection. Significantly, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa can be successfully extracted upon external magnetic field, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 1 CFU‧mL-1, lower than that of the congeneric detectors. This work paves a new way for the construction of a novel detector and absorbent for different bacteria in complex samples by using SERS probe.

Abstract
High-performance electrochemical biosensors for the rapid detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) are urgently required in the food industry. Herein, a multi-scaled electrochemical biosensor was fabricated by assembling carboxylated polystyrene nanospheres, an aptamer and horseradish peroxidase into a free-standing carbon nanofiber/carbon felt support. The resulting electrochemical biosensor possessed an exceptional performance, owing to the unique structures as well as the synergistic effects of the components. The 3D porous carbon nanofiber/carbon felt support served as an ideal substrate, owing to the excellent conductivity and facile diffusion of the reactants. The integration of carboxylated polystyrene nanospheres with horseradish peroxidase was employed as a signal amplification probe to enhance the electrochemical responses via catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. With the aid of the aptamer, the prepared sensors could quantitatively detect AFB1 in wine and soy sauce samples via differential pulse voltammetry. The recovery rates of AFB1 in the samples were between 87.53% and 106.71%. The limit of detection of the biosensors was 0.016 pg mL-1. The electrochemical biosensors also had excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, specificity and stability. The synthetic strategy reported in this work could pave a new route to fabricate high-performance electrochemical biosensors for the detection of mycotoxins.

Abstract
Contamination of agricultural products and foods by aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is becoming a serious global problem, and the presence of AFB1 in edible oil is frequent and has become inevitable, especially in underdeveloped countries and regions. As AFB1 results from a possible degradation of aflatoxins and the interaction of the resulting toxic compound with food components, it could cause chronic disease or severe cancers, increasing morbidity and mortality. Therefore, rapid and reliable detection methods are essential for checking AFB1 occurrence in foodstuffs to ensure food safety. Recently, new biosensor technologies have become a research hotspot due to their characteristics of speed and accuracy. This review describes various technologies such as chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, ELISA techniques, and biosensing techniques, along with their advantages and weaknesses, for AFB1 control in edible oil and provides new insight into AFB1 detection for future work. Although compared with other technologies, biosensor technology involves the cross integration of multiple technologies, such as spectral technology and new nano materials, and has great potential, some challenges regarding their stability, cost, etc., need further studies.

Abstract
It is well known that food safety has aroused extensive attentions from governments to researchers and to food industries. As a versatile technology based on molecular interactions, aptamer sensors which could specifically identify a wide range of food contaminants have been extensively studied in recent years. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy integrated aptamer combines the advantages of both technologies, not only in the ability to specifically identify a wide range of food contaminants, but also in the ultra-high sensitivity, simplicity, portable and speed. To provide beneficial insights into the evaluation techniques in the field of food safety, we offer a comprehensive review on the design strategies for aptamer-SERS sensors in different scenarios, including non-nucleic acid amplification methods ("on/off" mode, sandwich mode, competition model and catalytic model) and nucleic acid amplification methods (hybridization chain reaction, rolling circle amplification, catalytic hairpin assembly). Meanwhile, a special attention is paid to the application of aptamer-SERS sensors in biological (foodborne pathogenic, bacteria and mycotoxins) and chemical contamination (drug residues, metal ions, and food additives) of food matrix. Finally, the challenges and prospects of developing reliable aptamer-SERS sensors for food safety were discussed, which are expected to offer a strong guidance for further development and extended applications.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEN) is a universal mycotoxin contaminant in corn and its products. A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based test strip was proposed for the detection of ZEN, which had the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, and high sensitivity. Core-shell Au@AgNPs with embedded reporter molecules (4-MBA) were synthesized as SERS nanoprobe, which exhibited excellent SERS signals and high stability. The detection range of ZEN for corn samples was 10-1000 μg/kg with the limit of detection (LOD) of 3.6 μg/kg, which is far below the recommended tolerable level (60 μg/kg). More importantly, the SERS method was verified by HPLC in the application on corn samples contaminated with ZEN, and the coincidence rates were in the range of 86.06%-111.23%, suggesting a high accuracy of the SERS assay. Therefore, the SERS-based test strip with an analysis time of less than 15 min is a promising tool for accurate and rapid detection of ZEN-field contamination.

Abstract
This study proposes a label-free rapid detection method for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in pressing peanut oil based on Raman spectroscopy technology combined with appropriate chemometric methods. A DXR laser Raman spectrometer was used to acquire the Raman spectra of the pressed peanut oil samples, and the obtained spectra were preprocessed by wavelet transform (WT) combined with adaptive iteratively reweighted penalized least squares (airPLS). The competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) method was used to optimize the characteristic bands of the Raman spectra pretreated by the WT + airPLS, and a partial least squares (PLS) detection model for the AFB1 content was established based on the features optimized. The results obtained showed that the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and determination coefficient of prediction (RP2) of the optimal CARS-PLS model in the prediction set were 22.6 µg/kg and 0.99, respectively. The results demonstrate that the Raman spectroscopy combined with appropriate chemometrics can be used to quickly detect the safety of edible oil with high precision. The overall results can provide a technical basis and method reference for the design and development of the portable Raman spectroscopy system for the quality and safety detection of edible oil storage, and also provide a green tool for fast on-site analysis for regulatory authorities of edible oil and production enterprises of edible oil.

ABSTRACTSTea (Camellia sinensis L.) is a high valued beverage worldwide since ancient times; more than three billion cups of tea are consumed each day. Leaf extracts of the plant are used for food preservation, cosmetics, and medicinal purposes. Nevertheless, tea contaminated with mycotoxins poses a serious health threat to humans. Mycotoxin production by tea fungi is induced by a variety of factors, including poor processing methods and environmental factors such as high temperature and humidity. This review summarizes the studies published to date on mycotoxin prevalence, toxicity, the effects of climate change on mycotoxin production, and the methods used to detect and decontaminate tea mycotoxins. While many investigations in this domain have been carried out on the prevalence of aflatoxins and ochratoxins in black, green, pu-erh, and herbal teas, much less information is available on zearalenone, fumonisins, and Alternaria toxins. Mycotoxins in teas were detected using several methods; the most commonly used being the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection, followed by HPLC with tandem mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Further, mycotoxins decontamination methods for teas included physical, chemical, and biological methods, with physical methods being most prevalent. Finally, research gaps and future directions have also been discussed.

Abstract
Mycotoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in agricultural products pose a deadlydangertoanimal and human health and its rapid and reliable detection is thus very important. Herein, a ratiometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor for AFB1 detection was developed, in which 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene (BPE) was used to trigger the assembly of Au nanoparticle dimers (AuNP dimers) and form intensive SERS "hot spots", and MXenes nanosheets could load aptamer-modified AuNP dimers due to the hydrogen bonding and the chelation between the phosphate groups of aptamers and the Ti ion of MXenes. With the presence of AFB1 preferentially binding to AFB1 aptamer, AuNP dimers were separated from MXenes nanosheets, leading to a decrease in SERS intensity. Regression analysis in the range from 0.001 to 100 ng·mL-1 showed the limit of detection (LOD) being 0.6 pg·mL-1 in standard solution, indicating that the great prospects of the AuNP dimers/MXenes SERS substrate for detecting AFB1.

Abstract
Small molecular contaminants (such as mycotoxins, antibiotics, pesticide residues, etc.) in food and environment have given rise to many biological and ecological toxicities, which has attracted worldwide attention in recent years. Meanwhile, due to the advantages of aptamers such as high specificity and stability, easy synthesis and modification, as well as low cost and immunogenicity, various aptasensors for the detection of small molecular contaminants have been flourishing. An aptasensor as a whole is composed of an aptamer-based target recognizer and a signal transducer, which are fields of concentrated research. In the practical detection applications, in order to achieve the quantitative detection of small molecular contaminants at low abundance in real samples, a large number of signal enhancing strategies have been utilized in the development of aptasensors. Recent years is a vintage period for efficient signal enhancing strategies of aptasensors by the aid of nanomaterials and nucleic acid amplification that are applied in the elements for target recognition and signal conversion. Therefore, this paper meticulously reviews the signal enhancing strategies based on nanomaterials (including the (quasi-)zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional nanomaterials) and nucleic acid amplification (including enzyme-assisted nucleic acid amplification and enzyme-free nucleic acid amplification). Furthermore, the challenges and future trends of the abovementioned signal enhancing strategies for application are also discussed in order to inspire the practitioners in the research and development of aptasensors for small molecular contaminants.

Abstract
Current advances in constructing functional nanomaterials and elegantly designed nanostructures have opened up new possibilities for the fabrication of viable field biosensors. Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have fascinated much attention due to their chemical, optical, physicochemical, and electronic properties. They are ultrathin nanomaterials with unique properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, surface charge, shape, high anisotropy, and adjustable chemical functionality. 2DMs such as graphene-based 2D materials, Silicate clays, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), MXenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and transition metal oxides (TMOs) offer intensified physicochemical and biological functionality and have proven to be very promising candidates for biological applications and technologies. 2DMs have a multivalent structure that can easily bind to single-stranded DNA/RNA (aptamers) through covalent, non-covalent, hydrogen bond, and π-stacking interactions, whereas aptamers have a small size, excellent chemical stability, and low immunogenicity with high affinity and specificity. This review discussed the potential of various 2D material-based aptasensor for diagnostic applications, e.g., protein detection, environmental monitoring, pathogens detection, etc.

Abstract
Owing to the excellent performances of high sensitivity, high specificity, on-site detection, and multiplexing capability, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based aptasensors have performed prosperous applications and gained impressive progress in food safety. Herein, we reviewed the SERS-based aptasensors from the principles to specific applications in food safety. First, the sensor-working principles, SERS label design and preparation are introduced. Then, the popular platforms in the aptasensors are summarized with their advantages and disadvantages, followed by their representative applications. Further, the specific applications of developing SERS-based aptasensors in food safety are systematically provided. Moreover, the multiplex analysis using SERS labels are highlighted. Finally, challenges and perspectives for improving the SERS-based aptasensor performance are also discussed, aiming to give some proposes for researchers to choose suitable SERS-based aptasensors according to specific applications.

Abstract
An optical detection platform based on laser induced spectroscopy and double integrating spheres techniques was developed to obtain absorption (μa), reduced scattering coefficients (μ's) and fluorescence intensity of oil. The validation experiment carried on liquid phantoms showed that the developed system could achieve high linearity, and the results of spectra analysis indicated that the fluorescence intensity has a significant negative correlation with both μa and μ's. A total of 1620 oils with six categories were detected. The reason for the difference of fluorescence and μa spectra was analyzed by comparing the measured chlorophyll, polyphenol and α-tocopherol contents. Linear discriminant analysis combined with principal component analysis based on fluorescence and μa spectra was employed, to calibrate the AFB1 classification models. The discrimination results manifested that by integrating μa with fluorescence signal, the correct classification rate could be improved by more than 10%, and the false negative rate was greatly reduced.

Abstract
Mycotoxin contamination in foods has posed serious threat to public health and raised worldwide concern. The development of simple, rapid, facile, and cost-effective methods for mycotoxin detection is of urgent need. Aptamer-based sensors, abbreviated as aptasensors, with excellent recognition capacity to a wide variety of mycotoxins have attracted ever-increasing interest of researchers because of their simple fabrication, rapid response, high sensitivity, low cost, and easy adaptability for in situ measurement. The past few decades have witnessed the rapid advances of aptasensors for mycotoxin detection in foods. Therefore, this review first summarizes the reported aptamer sequences specific for mycotoxins. Then, the recent 5-year advancements in various newly developed aptasensors, which, according to the signal output mode, are divided into electrochemical, optical and photoelectrochemical categories, for mycotoxin detection are comprehensively discussed. A special attention is taken on their strengths and limitations in real-world application. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives for developing novel highly reliable aptasensors for mycotoxin detection are highlighted, which is expected to provide powerful references for their thorough research and extended applications. Owing to their unique advantages, aptasensors display a fascinating prospect in food field for safety inspection and risk assessment.

Abstract
Agricultural products are frequently contaminated by mycotoxins; thus, the accurate detection of mycotoxins is important to food safety. Zearalenone (ZEN), a mycotoxin produced by certain Fusarium and Gibberella species, is a group III carcinogen. We developed a universal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor for the detection of ZEN. The SERS biosensor consists of two functional nanomaterials: sulfhydryl (SH)-ZEN aptamer complementary DNA-modified Fe3O4@Au was used as a capture probe and SH-ZEN aptamer-modified Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles served as reporter probes. In the absence of ZEN, the highest Raman signal was obtained owing to the SERS effects of Fe3O4@Au and Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. Conversely, the addition of ZEN triggered the release of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles from Fe3O4@Au, leading to a decrease in SERS intensity after magnetic separation. Hybridization of the ZEN aptamer and its complementary strand generated a strong SERS signal from the reporter probe. Moreover, preferential binding of the ZEN aptamer to ZEN was observed. The signal intensity in SERS decreased linearly when the capture probes released the reporter. For ZEN detection, a linear range from 0.005 to 500 ng mL-1, with an R2 of 0.9981, was obtained. The detection limit was 0.001 ng mL-1. The SERS aptasensor showed excellent performance for analytical applications with real-world samples (beer and wine). This study presents a new model for the detection of mycotoxins based on simple changes in aptamers.

Abstract
The capability of a solvent-mediated liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method to improve the detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) in food matrixes using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is described. SERS detection of mycotoxins with nanoparticle aggregation is a simple method but with low reproducibility due to the heterogeneous distribution of the nanoparticle aggregates. We evaluated three different LLE protocols to analyze their performance in combination with SERS. A facile extraction method based on sample acidification and addition of chloroform as a separation solvent showed to not only extract OTA from wine and wheat but also facilitate the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles leading to an improvement of the detection signals and the reproducibility. This method enables rapid and simple analysis of mycotoxin Ochratoxin A in food systems.

Abstract
In this paper, a polyimide (PI)/Si/SiO2-based piezoresistive microcantilever biosensor was developed to achieve a trace level detection for aflatoxin B1. To take advantage of both the high piezoresistance coefficient of single-crystal silicon and the small spring constant of PI, the flexible piezoresistive microcantilever was designed using the buried oxide (BOX) layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer as a bottom passivation layer, the topmost single-crystal silicon layer as a piezoresistor layer, and a thin PI film as a top passivation layer. To obtain higher sensitivity and output voltage stability, four identical piezoresistors, two of which were located in the substrate and two integrated in the microcantilevers, were composed of a quarter-bridge configuration wheatstone bridge. The fabricated PI/Si/SiO2 microcantilever showed good mechanical properties with a spring constant of 21.31 nN/μm and a deflection sensitivity of 3.54 × 10-7 nm-1. The microcantilever biosensor also showed a stable voltage output in the Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) buffer with a fluctuation less than 1 μV @ 3 V. By functionalizing anti-aflatoxin B1 on the sensing piezoresistive microcantilever with a biotin avidin system (BAS), a linear aflatoxin B1 detection concentration resulting from 1 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL was obtained, and the toxic molecule detection also showed good specificity. The experimental results indicate that the PI/Si/SiO2 flexible piezoresistive microcantilever biosensor has excellent abilities in trace-level and specific detections of aflatoxin B1 and other biomolecules.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by fungi that contaminate many important crops worldwide. Humans are commonly exposed to mycotoxins through the consumption of contaminated food products. Mycotoxin contamination is unpredictable and unavoidable; it occurs at any point in the food production system under favorable conditions, and they cannot be destroyed by common heat treatments, because of their high thermal stability. Early and fast detection plays an essential role in this unique challenge to monitor the presence of these compounds in the food chain. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an advanced spectroscopic technique that integrates Raman spectroscopic molecular fingerprinting and enhanced sensitivity based on nanotechnology to meet the requirement of sensitivity and selectivity, but that can also be performed in a cost-effective and straightforward manner. This Review focuses on the SERS methodologies applied to date for qualitative and quantitative analysis of mycotoxins based on a variety of SERS substrates, as well as our perspectives on current limitations and future trends for applying this technique to mycotoxin analyses.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are toxic compounds naturally produced by certain types of fungi. The contamination of mycotoxins can occur on numerous foodstuffs, including cereals, nuts, fruits, and spices, and pose a major threat to humans and animals by causing acute and chronic toxic effects. In this regard, reliable techniques for accurate and sensitive detection of mycotoxins in agricultural products and food samples are urgently needed. As an advanced analytical tool, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), presents several major advantages, such as ultrahigh sensitivity, rapid detection, fingerprint-type information, and miniaturized equipment. Benefiting from these merits, rapid growth has been observed under the topic of SERS-based mycotoxin detection. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent achievements in this area. The progress of SERS-based label-free detection, aptasensor, and immunosensor, as well as SERS combined with other techniques, has been summarized, and in-depth discussion of the remaining challenges has been provided, in order to inspire future development of translating the techniques invented in scientific laboratories into easy-to-operate analytic platforms for rapid detection of mycotoxins.

Abstract
Many foodstuffs are extremely susceptible to contamination with aflatoxins, in which aflatoxin B1 is highly toxic and carcinogenic. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a rapid and effective analytical method for detecting and monitoring aflatoxin B1 in food. Herein, a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) method combined with QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap-effective, rugged, safe) sample pretreatment technique was used to detect aflatoxin B1. Sample preparation was optimized into a one-step extraction method using an Au nanoparticle-based solution (Au sol) as the SERS detection substrate. An affordable portable Raman spectrometer was then used for rapid, label-free, quantitative detection of aflatoxin B1 levels in foodstuffs. This method showed a good linear log relationship between the Raman signal intensity of aflatoxin B1 in the 1-1000 µg L-1 concentration range with a limit of detection of 0.85 µg kg-1 and a correlation coefficient of 0.9836. Rapid aflatoxin B1 detection times of ∼10 min for wheat, corn, and protein feed powder samples were also achieved. This method has high sensitivity, strong specificity, excellent stability, is simple to use, economical, and is suitable for on-site detection, with good prospects for practical application in the field of food safety.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are a great potential threat to human health, and the progress in the development of mycotoxin detection methods is of an escalating importance with the increasing emphasis on food safety. Aptamer, performing the same function as antibody in specific binding with targets, exhibits profound potential in biosensing since its debut in 1990. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of aptasensors for mycotoxin detection with the achievement of ultralow limit of detection and high sensitivity in the lab. However, there is still no officially approved aptasensing methods in mycotoxin detection application. In order to provide researchers with inspirations in the design and development of aptasensors for mycotoxin detection, we divide these aptasensors into two types, namely "on the surface" and "in the colloid", according to the location where the key sensing reaction occurs. We also systematically review aptasensors reported in the past 5 years under the abovementioned criterion of classification, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of aptasensors. Finally, we discuss prospective directions in the development of aptasensors for mycotoxin detection. This paper will offer insight and motivation to practitioners working on the research and practical application of aptasensors in the detection of mycotoxins and other substances.

Abstract
An integrated aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detection platform with quantum dot (QD)-based electrochemical immunosensor and an automated magneto-controlled pretreatment system was successfully developed. The automated pretreatment system adopts the immunoaffinity magnetic beads (IMB) as the capture probe of AFB1 and QD-labeled AFB1 complete antigen (AFB1-BSA-QDs) as the signal probe. AFB1-BSA-QDs can be easily converted into corresponding metallic cations through acidic treatment, which can be detected electrochemically via anode stripping voltammetry (ASV). Moreover, a disposable screen-printed electrode (SPE) without requiring any further modification is used in the novel electrochemical immunosensor' making routine testing feasible. Under optimal conditions, the detectable concentration range of AFB1 was 0.08-800 μg/kg. The metal ion signal associated linearly with the logarithm of AFB1 concentration within the range of 5-240 μg/kg, with a detection limit of 0.05 μg/kg. The spiked recoveries of three different concentrations in four different matrixes ranged from 83.9 to 118.0%, and inter-day relative standard deviations were below 10%. Furthermore, the methodology was validated by analyzing naturally contaminated samples, and results of the novel immunosensor were in good agreement with those of LC-MS/MS, demonstrating the potentiality of the developed method for the monitor of AFB1 in cereals and oils.

Abstract
An Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) biosensor was fabricated via an Ag nanoparticles assembly on the surface of a porous anodized aluminum (PAA) membrane. First, the Raman reporter 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) and DNA (partially complementary to AFB1 aptamer) were attached to the surface of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) by chemical bonding to form a 4-ATP-AgNPs-DNA complex. Similarly, the surface of a PAA membrane was functionalized with an AFB1 aptamer. Then, the PAA surface was functionalized with 4-ATP-AgNPs-DNA through base complementary pairing to form AgNPs-PAA sensor with a strong Raman signal. When AFB1 was added, AgNPs would be detached from the PAA surface because of the specific binding between AFB1 and the aptamer, resulting in a reduction in Raman signals. The detection limit of the proposed biosensor is 0.009 ng/mL in actual walnut and the linear range is 0.01-10 ng/mL. The sensor has good selectivity and repeatability; it can be applied to the rapid qualitative and quantitative detection of AFB1.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are a large type of secondary metabolites produced by fungi that pose a great hazard to and cause toxic reactions in humans and animals. A majority of countries and regulators, such as the European Union, have established a series of requirements for their use, and they have also set maximum tolerance levels. The development of high sensitivity and a specific analytical platform for mycotoxins is much in demand to address new challenges for food safety worldwide. Due to the superiority of simple, rapid, and low-cost characteristics, aptamer-based biosensors have successfully been developed for the detection of various mycotoxins with high sensitivity and selectivity compared with traditional instrumental methods and immunological approaches. In this article, we discuss and analyze the development of aptasensors for mycotoxins determination in food and agricultural products over the last 11 years and cover the literatures from the first report in 2008 until the present time. In addition, challenges and future trends for the selection of aptamers toward various mycotoxins and aptasensors for multi-mycotoxins analyses are summarized. Given the promising development and potential application of aptasensors, future research studies made will witness the great practicality of using aptamer-based biosensors within the field of food safety.

Abstract
Aspergillus exists commonly in many crops and any process of crop growth, harvest, storage, and processing can be polluted by this fungus. Once it forms a biofilm, Aspergillus can produce many toxins, such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin, zearalenone, fumonisin, and patulin. Among these toxins, AFB1 possesses the highest toxicity and is labeled as a group I carcinogen in humans and animals. Consequently, the proper control of AFB1 produced from biofilms in food and feed has long been recognized. Moreover, many biosensors have been applied to monitor AFB1 in biofilms in food. Additionally, in recent years, novel molecular recognition elements and transducer elements have been introduced for the detection of AFB1. This review presents an outline of recent progress made in the development of biosensors capable of determining AFB1 in biofilms, such as aptasensors, immunosensors, and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) biosensors. In addition, the current feasibility, shortcomings, and future challenges of AFB1 determination and analysis are addressed.

Abstract
In this study, a novel sensor fabricated with compactly arranged gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) templated from mesoporous silica film (MSF) via air-water interface has been confirmed as a promising surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for detecting trace levels of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), pymetrozine and thiamethoxam. The densely arranged AuNPs@MSF had an average AuNPs size of 5.15 nm with small nanogaps (<2nm) between AuNPs, and exhibited a high SERS performance. SERS spectra of pesticides were collected after their adsorption on the AuNPs@MSF. The results showed that the concentration of 2,4-D, pymetrozine and thiamethoxam gave a good linear relationship with SERS intensity. Moreover, the designed SERS-based sensor (AuNPs@MSF) was stable for 3 months with ca. 3% relative standard deviation (RSD) and was applied successfully for the analysis of 2,4-D extraction from both environmental and food samples. The proposed SERS-based sensor was further validated by HPLC and showed satisfactory result (p > 0.05).

Abstract
This review (with 163 refs) covers the recent developments of nanomaterial-based optical and electrochemical sensors for mycotoxins. The review starts with a brief discussion on occurrence, distribution, toxicity of mycotoxins and the legislations in monitoring their levels. It further outlines the research methods, various recognition matrices and the strategies involved in the development of highly sensitive and selective sensor systems. It also points out the salient features and importance of aptasensors in the detection of mycotoxins along with the different immobilization methods of aptamers. The review meticulously discusses the performance of different optical and electrochemical sensors fabricated using aptamers coupled with nanomaterials (CNT, graphene, metal nanoparticles and metal oxide nanoparticles). The review addresses the limitations in the current developments as well as the future challenges involved in the successful construction of aptasensors with the functionalized nanomaterials. Graphical abstract Recent developments in nanomaterial based aptasensors for mycotoxins are summarized. Specifically, the efficiency of the nanomaterial coupled aptasensors (such as CNT, graphene, metal nanoparticles and metal oxide nanoparticles) in optical and electrochemical methods are discussed.
