Deposition and light absorption characteristics of precipitation dissolved organic carbon (DOC) at three remote stations in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau, China

Characteristics of optical properties of DOM and nutrients in rainwater of different ecological areas of a large reservoir in China

Numerous studies have focused on the spectral characteristics and seasonal variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in rainwater. However, the relationship between the optical indices of DOM and nutrients in rainwater from different ecological areas of large reservoirs is poorly understood. A one-year monitoring study was conducted between March 2019 and February 2020 in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Henan Province, China, to compare the composition, spectral characteristic parameters, and relationship between the optical indices of DOM and nutrients in rainwater under different ecological environments. The study showed that the average value of a300 in all samples was 5.29 ± 2.16 m-1 and showed a seasonal trend of higher in spring and winter and lower in summer and autumn as well as a regional difference of agricultural area > urban area > reservoir area. A three-dimensional fluorescence with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) revealed four components of the rainwater: C1 and C2 as UV humic-like substances, and C3 and C4 as protein-like substances. The protein-like components of rainwater from agricultural areas had a high fluorescence intensity, whereas the UV humic-like components of rainfall from urban and reservoir areas had a high fluorescence intensity. Analysis of the fluorescence indices showed that rainwater DOM humification was low and had a strong endogenous character in the Danjiangkou Reservoir. The redundancy analysis revealed that NO3--N, DTN, and SO42- mainly influenced the DOM optical indices of rainwater in urban areas, EC, DTN, and DOC had the highest interpretation of the DOM optical indices of rainwater in agricultural areas, and SO42-, DOC, and DTN had the highest interpretation of the DOM optical indices of rainwater in the reservoir. Overall, understanding the characteristics of rainfall DOM fluorescence and the relationships with nutrients in different ecological regions provides important information for comprehending biogeochemical processes in reservoirs.

Accumulation of dissolved organic matter in the transition from fresh to aged seasonal snow in an industrial city in NE China

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the reduction of snow albedo and the acceleration of snowmelt, but its accumulation in snow remains poorly understood. This study investigated the accumulation of DOM in seasonal snow including its accumulation rate, molecular characteristics, and biological and chemical processing. Sixteen snow samples of both fresh and aged snow were collected at one-day interval in Changchun, a typical industrial city in NE China. The snow DOM contents increased linearly with accumulation time at a rate of 30.3 μg L^-1 d^-1. The optical properties, including fluorescence intensity and optical absorption coefficient, of snowmelt increased exponentially with time owing to the rapid accumulation of terrestrial humic-like fluorophores through snow-soil exchange and deposition of soil-derived substances. Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry highlighted the properties of DOM at a molecular level, indicating that compounds derived from underlying soil and vascular plants make the largest contribution to DOM. Microbe-derived compounds contribute 35.5 % to the DOM pool. Degrees of saturation and oxidation increase slightly after accumulation, with the impacts of photo- and bio-chemistry on DOM molecules being non-negligible. This study provides a new perspective concerning the accumulation and fate of organic contaminants in snow ecosystems.

Concentrations, sources, fluxes, and absorption properties of carbonaceous matter in a central Tibetan Plateau river basin

Carbonaceous matter (CM) (such as water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC), black carbon (BC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC)) has a significant impact on the carbon cycle and radiative forcing (RF) of glacier. Precipitation samples and glacier's snow/ice samples (snowpit, surface snow, and granular ice) (Xiao dongkemadi Glacier) were collected at the Dongkemadi River Basin (DRB) in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP) between May and October 2016 to investigate the characteristics and roles of CM in the TP River Basin. WIOC, BC, and WSOC concentrations in precipitation were relatively higher than that in snowpit, but lower than that in surface snow/ice, with the wet deposition fluxes of 0.10 ± 0.002, 0.04 ± 0.001, and 0.12 ± 0.002 g C m^-2 yr^-1 at DRB, respectively. The positive matrix factorization model identified four major sources (biomass burning source, secondary precursors, secondary aerosol, and dust source) of CM in precipitation at DRB. Two source areas (South Asia and the interior of TP) contributing to the pollution at DRB were identified using a potential source contribution function model, a concentration-weighted trajectory method, and the back-trajectory model. Moreover, the light-absorption by WSOC in the ultraviolet region was 23.0%, 12.1%, and 3.4% relative to the estimated total light-absorption in precipitation, snowpit, and surface snow/ice, respectively. Optical indices analysis revealed that WSOC in snowpit samples presented higher molecular weight, while presented higher aromatic and higher molecule sizes in surface snow/ice and precipitation samples, respectively. RF by WSOC relative to that of BC was estimated to be 17.6 ± 17.6% for precipitation, 10.9 ± 5.8% for snowpit, and 10.7 ± 11.6% for surface snow/ice, respectively, during the melt season in the central TP River Basin. These results help us understand how CM affects glaciers, and they can be utilized to create policies and recommendations that efficiently reduce emissions.

Biogeochemical properties and fate of dissolved organic matter in wet deposition: Insights from a mariculture area in North Yellow Sea

To address the potential roles of atmospheric wet deposition in carbon cycling in coastal waters, a comprehensive study of the biogeochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in precipitation and the resulting implication in a mariculture area in North Yellow Sea was conducted. The annual mean concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chromophoric and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (CDOM and FDOM) were 1.52 ± 1.52 mg C L^-1, 0.36 ± 0.66 m^-1 and 0.38 ± 0.35 QSU, respectively. The concentrations of most DOM proxies exhibited significant negative correlations with the corresponding precipitation amount (R² = 0.15-0.40, P < 0.01), but the dilution effects became less significant when the precipitation amount exceeded 10.2, 10.7, 10.2 and 2.4 mm for DOC, CDOM, highly‑oxygenated and hypoxic structured humic-like substances, respectively. Seasonally, the dominant precipitation type in winter was snowfall, in which the DOM contained more high-molecular-weight compounds with higher aromaticity and humification degree, while the characteristics of DOM in intensive rainfall in summer were contrary to those in winter. The wet deposition flux of DOC to this region was estimated to be 6.31 × 10⁸ g C a^-1, which was 3.3 and 1.4 times that of the dry deposition and local riverine input, thereby contributing to 4.0 % of the DOC storage in the study area. In summer, the intensive input of DOC through wet deposition (0.43 g C m^-2) to surface seawater could enrich its bioavailable DOC by 10.7 μmol L^-1, the complete aerobic decomposition of which would cause an obvious dissolved oxygen depletion in the surface seawater by 21.4 μmol L^-1, demonstrating the influence of wet deposition on summer deoxygenation in coastal waters.

Chromophoric dissolved organic carbon cycle and its molecular compositions and optical properties in precipitation in the Guanzhong basin, China

The investigation of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), which is important in the biogeochemical cycle of precipitation, can provide a comprehensive view of chromophores within the atmospheric boundary layer. In this work, the optical properties and molecular characteristics of WSOC in precipitation over the Guanzhong Basin (GB) of North China were investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI). Furthermore, sources and wet deposition of WSOC were estimated using in-situ measurements and modeling. The light-absorption by WSOC at 250-300 nm (UV region) and 400-550 nm (visible region) was 64.17% and 15.36% relative to the estimated total light-absorption, respectively. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis revealed three types of fluorophores in WSOC at Xi'an (XN), including two humic-like substances (HULIS) and one protein-like substance (PRLIS), with HULIS accounting for 79% of total fluorescence intensity. FT-ICR MS analysis revealed that CHO and CHON were the most abundant components of WSOC at XN, each containing a variety of lignins, protein/amino sugars, and lipids. Moreover, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified the contributions from three main sources (secondary precursors and aerosols, and coal combustion) of WSOC in precipitation at XN. The annual wet deposition flux of WSOC in precipitation at XN was estimated as about 0.63 g C m^-2 yr^-1, lower than that at other polluted cities. These findings add to our understanding of chromophoric dissolved organic carbon budgets, which is critical for accurately assessing the global carbon cycle.

Photobleaching reduces the contribution of dissolved organic carbon to glacier melting in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) makes an important contribution to glacier melting in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (HTP). Photobleaching can effectively reduce the light absorption ability of DOC, further changing its impact on glacier melting, which is not yet well researched in the HTP. Therefore, snowpit samples from the Bayi, Ganglongjiama (GLJM), Jiemayangzong (JMYZ) and Demula (DML) glaciers were collected to study the influence of photobleaching on the light absorption ability of DOC and its impact on glacier melting. The results showed that the DOC concentration of snowpit samples, which was affected by the melting state and photobleaching, decreased from the northern HTP to the southern HTP. At an early stage of melting, the mass absorption cross-section value at 365 nm (MAC₃₆₅) values showed a negative correlation with DOC concentrations in the snowpit at the JMYZ and DML glaciers, indicating that colored DOC tended to be concentrated in the snowpit during the melting process. With the aggravation of ablation, some snowpit samples in the GLJM and Bayi glaciers had both low concentrations and MAC₃₆₅ values of DOC due to the reduced influence of photobleaching on the light absorption ability of DOC. Similarly, two fluorescence components (one protein-like component and one humic-like component) were identified in the extracted DOC at the JMYZ and DML glaciers, while those components were not detected in the GLJM glacier. Based on the sources of fluorescent DOC and five-day backward air mass trajectories, long-distance transport of pollutants from South Asia was an important source of snowpit DOC in the southern HTP. In this study, photobleaching can effectively remove colored and fluorescent DOC from snowpit samples in the HTP, further reducing the radiation forcing and glacier melting caused by DOC.

Characteristics of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in precipitation in the northern Tibetan Plateau

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (N) play essential roles in global C and N cycles. To address the possible role of DOC and N in precipitation and enrich the related global database, the characteristics of DOC and N in precipitation were investigated in a typical remote permafrost region (upper Heihe River Basin) of the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP) from February 2019 to March 2020. The results demonstrated that the average DOC and total dissolved N (TDN) concentrations in the precipitation were 1.41 ± 1.09 μg mL^-1 and 0.84 ± 0.48 μg mL^-1, respectively, with relatively lower concentrations in the summer. The annual DOC and TDN fluxes were estimated to be 6.42 kg ha^-1 yr^-1 and 3.39 kg ha^-1 yr^-1, respectively, indicating that precipitation was a significant factor in C and N deposition. The light-absorbing properties of precipitation DOC from the SUVA₂₅₄ and spectral slope revealed that precipitation DOC containing more aromatic components and lower molecular weights mostly was present during the summer; the mass cross-section (at the wavelength of 365 nm) ranged 0.26-1.84 m² g^-1, suggesting the potential impact of DOC on climatic forcing in the area. The principal component analysis combined with air mass backward trajectories indicated that the air masses from west Siberia, Central Asia, and northwestern China most significantly influenced the precipitation C and N in the study area. The WRF-Chem simulations and aerosol vertical distributions further illustrated the air mass transport pathways, demonstrating that dust and anthropogenic emissions could be transported over the studied area by westerlies and monsoonal winds. In the study basin, the precipitation deposition of DOC and N contributed largely to the riverine DOC and N exportation during the summer and had potential ecological effects. These results highlight the importance of DOC and N deposition from precipitation in the northern TP.

Light absorption and fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic compounds in carbonaceous particles at a typical remote site in the southeastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau

Carbonaceous particles play an important role in climate change, and an increase in their emission and deposition causes glacier melting in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (HTP). This implies that studying their basic characteristics is crucial for a better understanding of the climate forcing observed in this area. Thus, we investigated characteristics of carbonaceous particles at a typical remote site of southeastern HTP. Organic carbon and elemental carbon concentrations at this study site were 1.86 ± 0.84 and 0.18 ± 0.09 μg m^-3, respectively, which are much lower than those reported for other frequently monitored stations in the same region. Thus, these values reflect the background characteristics of the study site. Additionally, the absorption coefficient per mass (α/ρ) of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) at 365 nm was 0.60 ± 0.19 m² g^-1, with the highest and lowest values corresponding to the winter and monsoon seasons, respectively. Multi-dimensional fluorescence analysis showed that the WSOC consisted of approximately 37% and 63% protein and humic-like components, respectively, and the latter was identified as the component that primarily determined the light absorption ability of the WSOC, which also showed a significant relationship with some major ions, including SO^2-₄, K⁺, and Ca²⁺, indicating that combustion activities as well as mineral dust were two important contributors to WSOC at the study site.

Climatic, land cover, and anthropogenic controls on dissolved organic matter quantity and quality from major alpine rivers across the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau

Alpine rivers in mountainous regions are crucial not only for land-ocean transfer of chemical species and sediments, but also for water, food, and energy security. Here, we examined dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the major alpine waters on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results revealed a decreasing trend of DOM quantity juxtaposed to an increasing trend of aromaticity from the northern to southern plateau. This is potentially caused by a general decreasing gradient of dust load combined with an increasing gradient of precipitation and vegetation from the NW to SE plateau. Furthermore, most proglacial streams and smaller tributaries were found to be relatively dominated by tyrosine-like fluorescent DOM from glaciers. In contrast, most main stems of rivers and tributaries within larger catchment basins were more controlled by humic-like fluorescent DOM from terrestrial origins. Condensed aromatics accounts for 14-21% of molecular formulas for riverine DOM, much higher than the world's average of ~11%, which indicated anthropogenic black soot pollution. In addition, there is a higher level of DOM amount in the monsoon season than in winter, and DOM characteristics varied more widely (dissolved organic carbon concentration: 0.2-37 mg-C L^-1, Fluorescence Index: 1.2-1.8) on the Tibetan Plateau in comparison to other global alpine watersheds. This suggests heterogeneous land cover, anthropogenic, and climatic factors at play, which is reflected in DOM quantity and quality, over the highest plateau on Earth.

Carbonaceous matter in the atmosphere and glaciers of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau: An investigative review

Carbonaceous matter, including organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC), is an important climate forcing agent and contributes to glacier retreat in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (HTP). The HTP - the so-called "Third Pole" - contains the most extensive glacial area outside of the polar regions. Considerable research on carbonaceous matter in the HTP has been conducted, although this research has been challenging due to the complex terrain and strong spatiotemporal heterogeneity of carbonaceous matter in the HTP. A comprehensive investigation of published atmospheric and snow data for HTP carbonaceous matter concentration, deposition and light absorption is presented, including how these factors vary with time and other parameters. Carbonaceous matter concentrations in the atmosphere and glaciers of the HTP are found to be low. Analysis of water-insoluable organic carbon and BC from snowpits reveals that concentrations of OC and BC in the atmosphere and glacier samples in arid regions of the HTP may be overestimated due to contributions from inorganic carbon in mineral dust. Due to the remote nature of the HTP, carbonaceous matter found in the HTP has generally been transported from outside the HTP (e.g., South Asia), although local HTP emissions may also be important at some sites. This review provides essential data and a synthesis of current thinking for studies on atmospheric transport modeling and radiative forcing of carbonaceous matter in the HTP.

Investigation of the spatio-temporal heterogeneity and optical property of water-soluble organic carbon in atmospheric aerosol and snow over the Yulong Snow Mountain, southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Atmospheric aerosols are a branch of active research in recent decades. The deposition of light-absorbing substances on high-altitude glaciers causes substantial adverse impacts on the cryospheric environment, cryosphere-hydrology, and climate system. Although, the concentrations of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in snow/ice on glaciers of Tibetan Plateau (TP) have been reported, their transfer processes and optical properties in the context of summer precipitation-atmosphere-snow-river water continuum are seldom studied. In this study, we have systematically examined some scientific issues associated with WSOC concentrations and light absorption properties of WSOC in various forms of samples from the Mt. Yulong region. Statistical results demonstrate that the spatial distribution of WSOC in the snow of Baishui glacier was heterogeneous. The average WSOC concentrations of each snowpit were significantly decreased, and its light-absorbing properties were significantly elevated with the time extension. Aerosol WSOC concentrations and light absorption have distinct spatial disparity and seasonal variation. Pre-monsoon and monsoon have the highest and lowest WSOC content, respectively. Whereas the light-absorbing properties present contrasting seasonal trends. Rivers of which runoff was supplied by glacier meltwater have significantly lower WSOC concentrations (e.g., 0.42 ± 0.03 mg L^-1) compared with other forms of water bodies. Mass absorption cross-section of WSOC (MAC-_WSOC) in multiple snow and meltwater samples was significantly different and type-dependent. Atmospheric aerosol has the lowest MAC-_WSOC value among the four types of samples, which was likely associated with exhaust emissions from private vehicles and tour buses. Statistical results indicated that the average AAE_330-400 values of various snow/ice samples are subequal. Snow of glaciers supplies a desirable platform for the deposition of gaseous materials which experienced long-range transport in high altitude zones. Biomass-burning emissions made an immense contribution to the WSOC deposition over the study area, as demonstrated by the distribution of active fire points. However, this preliminary study represents the first systematic investigation of WSOC deposition in southeastern TP. Further robust in-situ field investigations and laboratory measurements are urgently necessary to improve our understanding of the transfer process and optical property of WSOC.

Characterization, sources and transport of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen from a glacier in the Central Asia

Glacier melting represents an important flux of carbon and nitrogen (N) and affects the hydrological cycle. In this study, we presented the features of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and N concentrations, their potential sources and export from the Muz Taw glacier in Central Asia. The average DOC and total dissolved nitrogen concentrations were 1.12 ± 1.66 and 0.62 ± 0.59 mg L^-1 in surface snow and 0.21 ± 0.04 and 0.31 ± 0.10 mg L^-1 in snowpit samples, respectively. The values from snowpit of the Muz Taw glacier were comparable to data reported from glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau but were considerably higher than those from polar regions. The C/N ratios in snow ranged from 0.7 to 11.7, indicating the high bioavailability of DOC. Mass absorption cross section of DOC at 365 nm in snow indicated that during the snow melting process, light-absorbing DOC was prone to be attached to particles, especially in the ablation zone of the Muz Taw glacier. Radiative forcing caused by DOC contributed approximately 38 ± 26% and 18 ± 9.8% of that caused by black carbon for surface snow and snowpit samples, respectively. DOC and N deposition on the glacier surface were influenced by the combined sources from anthropogenic input, wild biomass burning emission, and dust input from local regions and long range transport. Export of DOC and N from the Muz Taw glacier was estimated to be 3.47-18.5 t C yr^-1 and 5.11-10.23 t N yr^-1 respectively, based on their concentrations and current glacier mass balance. These results enhanced our understanding of the sources and cycle of DOC and N released from glaciers in Central Asia, where glacier meltwater can protect the population from drought stress.

High particulate carbon deposition in Lhasa-a typical city in the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau due to local contributions

The Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau is a typical remote region with sparse air pollution. However, air pollution in cites of the inner Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau is relatively serious due to emissions from local residents. Carbonaceous aerosols are not only an important component of air pollutants that affect the health of local residents but also an important trigger of climate change. In this study, the annual wet and dry deposition rates of carbonaceous particles were investigated in Lhasa-a typical city in the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, by collecting precipitation and dry deposition samples and analyzing with a thermal-optical measurement protocol. The results showed that the in-situ annual wet deposition rates of water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) and black carbon (BC) were 169.6 and 19.4 mg m^-2 yr^-1, respectively, with the highest and lowest values occurring in the monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. Both precipitation amounts and concentrations of WIOC and BC contributed to wet deposition rates. The dry deposition rates of WIOC and BC in Lhasa had an opposite seasonal variation to that of wet deposition, with annual average deposition rates of 2563.9 and 165.7 mg m^-2 yr^-1, respectively, which were much higher than those of the nearby glacier region and remote area. These values were also much higher than the results from modeling and empirical calculations, indicating that Lhasa is a high pollution point that cannot capture by models. The results in this study have significant implications for the transport of local emissions in Lhasa to the nearby remote and glacier regions.

Carbonaceous matter in glacier at the headwaters of the Yangtze River: Concentration, sources and fractionation during the melting process

Carbonaceous matter has an important impact on glacial retreat in the Tibetan Plateau, further affecting the water resource supply. However, the related studies on carbonaceous matter are still scarce in Geladaindong (GLDD) region, the source of the Yangtze River. Therefore, the concentration, source and variations of carbonaceous matter at Ganglongjiama (GLJM) glacier in GLDD region were investigated during the melting period in 2017, which could deepen our understanding on carbonaceous matter contribution to glacier melting. The results showed that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration of snowpit samples (283 ± 200 μg/L) was much lower than that of precipitation samples (624 ± 361 μg/L), indicating that large parts of DOC could be rapidly leached from the snowpit during the melting process. In contrast, refractory black carbon (rBC) concentration measured by Single Particle Soot Photometer of snowpit samples (4.27 ± 3.15 μg/L) was much higher than that of precipitation samples (0.97 ± 0.49 μg/L). Similarly, DOC with high mass absorption cross-section measured at 365 nm value was also likely to enrich in snowpit during the melting process. In addition, it was found that both rBC and DOC with high light-absorbing ability began to leach from the snowpit when melting process became stronger. Therefore, rBC and DOC with high light-absorbing ability exhibited similar behavior during the melting process. Based on relationship among DOC, rBC and K⁺ in precipitation, the main source of carbonaceous matter in GLJM glacier was biomass burning during the study period.

Atmospheric wet deposition of dissolved organic carbon to a typical anthropogenic-influenced semi-enclosed bay in the western Yellow Sea, China: Flux, sources and potential ecological environmental effects

Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) is a key organic compound in wet precipitation, but few data are available in China marginal seas. To probe the concentration, deposition flux, seasonality, source and potential ecological environmental effects of precipitation DOC, in this study, one-year precipitation samples were collected at Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), a typical anthropogenic-influenced semi-enclosed bay in the western Yellow Sea for the first time from June 2015 to May 2016. The concentrations of DOC in precipitation were highly variable with a volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentration of 3.63 mg C L^-1, which was mostly higher than those in other areas. DOC concentrations were lower in wet season than that in dry season due to the dilution from more amount of rainfall. The wet deposition flux of DOC was calculated to be 3.15 g C m^-2 yr^-1 with 68.7% of which occurred in wet season mainly owing to the promoting of more rainfall amount. Besides, local emissions together with the long-range transport of pollutants were other factors controlling precipitation DOC. Fossil fuel combustion particularly coal burning was considered to be the leading source of precipitation DOC based on correlation analysis with some generally accepted indicators. Wet deposition dominates the external input of DOC at JZB by comparison with riverine input with a percentage of 54%. Heavy storm may exert enrichment effect on DOC levels in the surface water of JZB, and then promote the secondary productivity. This study emphasizes that wet deposition is an important process that should be seriously considered in the models of global/regional carbon biogeochemical cycling.

Immobilization of relic anthropogenic dissolved organic matter from alpine rivers in the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau in winter

The Tibetan Plateau is a critical ecosystem that sensitively responds to ongoing glacier shrinkage and permafrost thaw. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Tibetan Alpine rivers plays pivotal roles in the biogeochemical cycling of elements and nutrients at regional and even global scales, impacting water quality, downstream environments, and climate. However, little is known about the characteristics and dynamics of DOM in these watersheds. We investigated five major Himalayan rivers in the southern Tibetan Plateau, utilizing bulk dissolved organic carbon (DOC), optical properties, and molecular formulas. We found extremely low DOC and fluorescent DOM (FDOM) levels in the rivers (average DOC: 0.25-0.87 mg L^-1, FDOM: 0.02-0.05 RU) with a highly degraded molecular signature, which was enriched with heteroatomic molecular formulas (S-containing: 58-72%, N-containing: 61-86%) and condensed aromatics (31-39% vs. ∼11% in world major rivers). Further, 81-99% of the condensed aromatics was identified as dissolved black nitrogen (DBN) with multiple nitrogen atoms, typical for grassy biomass combustion. The findings highlighted potentially fast DOM remineralization leading to the release of CO₂ and enriched apparently anthropogenic condensed aromatics and heteroatomic formulas in what have been considered pristine Tibetan rivers. These findings should be considered in future biogeochemical models and ecosystem management.

Linking atmospheric pollution to cryospheric change in the Third Pole region: current progress and future prospects

The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings are known as the Third Pole (TP). This region is noted for its high rates of glacier melt and the associated hydrological shifts that affect water supplies in Asia. Atmospheric pollutants contribute to climatic and cryospheric changes through their effects on solar radiation and the albedos of snow and ice surfaces; moreover, the behavior and fates within the cryosphere and environmental impacts of environmental pollutants are topics of increasing concern. In this review, we introduce a coordinated monitoring and research framework and network to link atmospheric pollution and cryospheric changes (APCC) within the TP region. We then provide an up-to-date summary of progress and achievements related to the APCC research framework, including aspects of atmospheric pollution's composition and concentration, spatial and temporal variations, trans-boundary transport pathways and mechanisms, and effects on the warming of atmosphere and changing in Indian monsoon, as well as melting of glacier and snow cover. We highlight that exogenous air pollutants can enter into the TP's environments and cause great impacts on regional climatic and environmental changes. At last, we propose future research priorities and map out an extended program at the global scale. The ongoing monitoring activities and research facilitate comprehensive studies of atmosphere-cryosphere interactions, represent one of China's key research expeditions to the TP and the polar regions and contribute to the global perspective of earth system science.

Dissolved organic carbon in snow cover of the Chinese Altai Mountains, Central Asia: Concentrations, sources and light-absorption properties

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in snow plays an important role in river ecosystems that are fed by snowmelt water. However, limited knowledge is available on the DOC content in snow of the Chinese Altai Mountains in Central Asia. In this study, DOC in the snow cover of the Kayiertesi river basin, southern slope of Altai Mountains, was investigated during November 2016 to April 2017. The results showed that average concentrations of DOC in the surface snow cover (1.01 ± 0.52 mg L^-1) were only a little higher than those in glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau, European Alps, and Alaska, but much higher than in Greenland Ice Sheet. Depth variations of DOC concentrations from snowpack profiles indicated higher values in the surface layer. During the observation period, scavenging efficiency for DOC in snow cover is estimated to be 0.15 ± 0.10, suggesting that DOC in snow can be affected more by the meltwater during ablation season than during accumulation season. The average mass absorption cross section at 365 nm and the absorption Ångström exponent of DOC were 0.45 ± 0.35 m² g^-1 and 2.59 ± 1.03, respectively, with higher values in March and April 2017. Fraction of radiative forcing caused by DOC relative to black carbon accounted for about 10.5%, implying DOC is a non-ignorable light-absorber of solar radiation in snow of the Altai regions. Backward trajectories analysis and aerosol vertical distribution images from satellites showed that DOC in the snow of the Altai Mountains was mainly influenced by air masses from Central Asia, Western Siberia, the Middle East, and some even from Europe. Biomass burning and organic carbon mixed with mineral dust contributed significantly to the DOC concentration. This study highlights the effects of DOC in the snow cover for radiative forcing and the need to study carbon cycling for evaluation of quality of the downstreams ecosystems.

Review of brown carbon aerosols: Recent progress and perspectives

Brown carbon (BrC), a carbonaceous aerosol which absorbs solar radiation over a broad range of wavelengths, is beginning to be seen as an important contributor to global warming. BrC absorbs both inorganic and organic pollutants, leading to serious effects on human health. We review the fundamental features of BrC, including its sources, chemical composition, optical properties and radiative forcing effects. We detail the importance of including photochemical processes related to BrC in the GEOS-Chem transport model for the estimation of aerosol radiative forcing. Calculation methods for BrC emission factors are examined, including the problems and limitations of current measurement methods. We provide some insight into existing publications and recommend areas for future research, such as further investigations into the reaction mechanisms of the aging of secondary BrC, calculations of the emission factors for BrC from different sources, the absorption of large and long-lived BrC molecules and the construction of an enhanced model for the simulation of radiative forcing. This review will improve our understanding of the climatic and environmental effects of BrC.

Dissolved organic carbon fractionation accelerates glacier-melting: A case study in the northern Tibetan Plateau

In glacierized regions, melting process has a significant effect on concentrations and light absorption characteristics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), potentially resulting in variations of its radiative forcing, which is not yet relevant research at glacier region of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). In this study, DOC fractionation and its radiative forcing change during the melting process were investigated at Laohugou glacier No. 12 (LHG glacier) in western Qilian Mts., northern TP. DOC concentrations in fresh snow, snowpit and surface ice samples were 0.38 ± 0.06, 0.22 ± 0.11 and 0.60 ± 0.21 mg L^-1, respectively. Their mass absorption cross-section at 365 nm (MAC₃₆₅) were 0.65 ± 0.16, 4.71 ± 3.68 and 1.44 ± 0.52 m² g^-1, respectively. The MAC₃₆₅ values of snowpit samples showed a significant negative correlation with DOC concentrations, indicating DOC with high MAC₃₆₅ values were likely to be kept in snow during the melting process. Topsoil samples of LHG glacierized region likely contributed a lot to snowpit DOC with high MAC₃₆₅ values due to their similar absorption spectra. Spatially, the DOC concentration of surface ice samples increased from terminus to the upper part of the glacier. Correspondingly, the MAC₃₆₅ value showed decreased trend. In the freezing experiment on surface ice and topsoil samples, small part of DOC with high MAC₃₆₅ value was also likely to enter first frozen solid phase. In addition, the radiative forcing caused by snowpit and surface ice DOC increased around 7.64 ± 2.93 and 4.95 ± 1.19 times relative to fresh snow DOC, indicating the snow/ice melting caused by increased light-absorbing DOC needs to be considered in the future research.
