Assessment of heavy metal contamination, distribution and source identification in the sediments from the Zijiang River, China

Priority sources identification and risks assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils of a typical antimony mining watershed

Heavy metal(loid) (HM) pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony (Sb) mining areas. However, priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources coexist. Herein, an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk (HHR) and ecological risk (ER) in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern China. This approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models with ER and HHR assessments. Four pollution sources were distinguished for both models, and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and plausible. Predominant HM concentration source was natural source (39.1%), followed by industrial and agricultural activities (23.0%), unknown sources (21.5%) and Sb mining and smelting activities (16.4%). Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations, it did not pose a significant ER. Industrial and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER, and attention should be paid to Cd and Sb. Sb mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR, particularly Sb and As contaminations. Considering ER and HHR assessments, Sb mining and smelting, and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources, causing serious ecological and health threats. This study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk assessments. HM pollution management, such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils, is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.

A review of heavy metals pollution in riverine sediment from various Asian and European countries: Distribution, sources, and environmental risk

Riverine sediments are important reservoirs of heavy metals, representing both historical and contemporary anthropogenic activity within the watershed. This review has been conducted to examine the distribution of heavy metals in the surface sediment of 52 riverine systems from various Asian and European countries, as well as to determine their sources and environmental risks. The results revealed significant variability in heavy metal contamination in the world's riverine systems, with certain hotspots exhibiting concentrations that exceeded the permissible limits set by environmental quality standards. Among the studied countries, India has the highest levels of chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) contamination in its riverine systems, followed by Iran > Turkey > Spain > Vietnam > Pakistan > Malaysia > Taiwan > China > Nigeria > Bangladesh > Japan. Heavy metal pollution in the world's riverine systems was quantified using pollution evaluation indices. The Contamination Factor (CF) revealed moderate contamination (1 ≤ CF < 3) throughout the geological units, with the exception of Pb, Cd, and Cu. The Contamination Degree (CD) classifies the contamination level into different categories: Low degree of contamination (CD < 6), moderate degree of contamination (6 ≤ CD < 12), considerable degree of contamination (12 ≤ CD < 24), and a very high degree of contamination (CD ≥ 24), while the Pollution Load Index (PLI) estimate the total amount of heavy metal pollution in riverine sediments, with Turkey having the highest PLI value of 6.512, followed by Spain, Vietnam, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Iran, and Nigeria. In applied multivariate statistics, correlation analysis determined the fate and distribution of heavy metals in riverine systems, while Principal Component Analysis (PCA) elucidated the potential sources, including industrial, agrochemical, mining, and domestic wastewater discharges, lubricant leakages, multiple geogenic inputs, erosion of mafic and ultramafic rocks, and minimal atmospheric deposition. As per Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) perspectives, Vietnam, Spain, and Turkey have the highest ecological risk, followed by Nigeria > Pakistan > Bangladesh > China > Taiwan > Japan and Iron, while the potential risks of ∑non-carcinogenic Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Co, Zn, and Mn for exposed human children and adults through ingestion and dermal contact were significantly influenced between acceptable to high risk, necessitating special attention from pollution control agencies.

Impact of manganese mining on potentially toxic elements pollution and bioaccumulation in Spirogyra varians and Hydrilla verticillata in the Xiaojiang River

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the content and potential sources of PTEs (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) in water, sediment, and dominant aquatic plants (Hydrilla verticillata and Spirogyra varians) in the Xiaojiang River, located near the Zhaiying manganese mine in Guizhou Province, China. Correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis were employed to assess PTE distribution and potential sources. Water PTE concentrations complied with the Class II standard (GB3838-2002), indicating no water pollution. However, sediment PTE levels exceeded background values, particularly Mn, which exhibited moderate to strong contamination. Cd also showed moderate contamination, posing a considerable ecological risk. Cd was the main potential pollutant with the highest contribution rate. Mn and Cd were therefore identified as priority pollutants requiring targeted abatement strategies. Mining activities likely represent the primary source, but combined pollution from vehicle traffic and agriculture might also contribute. Hydrilla verticillata demonstrated a higher capacity for PTE enrichment from sediment compared to Spirogyra varians, suggesting its potential for sediment remediation (except for Cu). A significant correlation existed between both plant species and sediment PTE content. PCA supported the association between S. varians and sediment PTEs. Linear regression analyses revealed better correlations between S. varians and sediment Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn (0.77, 0.68, 0.82, and 0.79, respectively). Taken together, these findings suggest that S. varians serves as an effective bioindicator for monitoring sediment contamination with PTEs.

Co-occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals in various environmental matrices of a chronic petroleum polluted region in Iran; Pollution characterization, and assessment of ecological and human health risks

Oil spills from pipeline accidents can result in long-lasting health effect in the people living in a ‎polluted region‎. In this study, the level of the 16 US EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs‎) and heavy metals (HMs) have been ‎analyzed in environmental matrices of a region with frequent oil ‎pipeline accidents in Iran‎.‎ The results showed that the mean ‎concentration of ΣPAHs and ΣHMs decreased from the upstream to the downstream and also the levels were ‎higher in the wet season than those in the dry season. The average concentration of HMs in sediments was higher than that in other ‎environments. The 3-ring and 4-ring PAHs were dominant in all of the studied matrices with the average values of 32.61 % and 45.85 %, respectively. The ecological risks of PAHs and HMs were medium and high in all matrices, respectively. In wet season, the total cancer risk (TCR) related to PAHs in agricultural soil was greater than 10-4, whereas it's very close to the threshold for HMs in water. This study offers a reference for assessing the long-term impact of oil spills in contaminated environmental matrices. The results are crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate oil pollution ‎impacts and protect environmental and public health.

Assessment of contamination, mobility and application of selected technology-critical elements as indicators of anthropogenic pollution of bottom sediments

The study investigates the potential of technology-critical elements (TCEs) in the bottom sediments of the Biała Przemsza River as indicators of anthropogenic activities. The mass fractions of TCEs: Ge, Ga, In, Tl, Sb and Te (and other elements) in the sediment were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with the maximum mass fractions: 2.46, 25.6, 0.528, 27.7, 12.5 and 0.293 mg/kg, respectively. Distribution and identification of TCE sources were supported by statistical analysis (principal component analysis coupled with varimax rotation and hierarchical cluster analysis). Assessments of TCE contamination using the geoaccumulation index, pollution index, contamination factor, enrichment factor and the antimony-to-arsenic ratio highlighted the high contamination of bottom sediments by Sb, Ga, Tl, Cd, As, Zn, Pb and moderate contamination by Co, In and V. Distinct behaviour patterns were observed among TCEs, revealing Sb and Tl as potential indicators of Zn-Pb ore mining activities. Co, V, Ge and, to a lesser extent, Te emerged as promising indicators of coal and coal fly ash effluents. Sequential chemical extraction of TCEs showed that Sb, In and Tl had the highest mobility from sediments. The Risk Assessment Code calculations suggest, that in the Biała Przemsza River bottom sediments, there is an average risk of contamination by As, Tl and Mn. Soluble forms of Tl, Ge, Sb, Te and In were identified in descending order, indicating their bioavailability.

Land use/cover drive functional patterns of bacterial communities in sediments of a subtropical river, China

The bacterial community in sediment serves as an important indicator for assessing the environmental health of river ecosystems. However, the response of bacterial community structure and function in river basin sediment to different land use/cover changes has not been widely studied. To characterize changes in the structure, composition, and function of bacterial communities under different types of land use/cover, we studied the bacterial communities and physicochemical properties of the surface sediments of rivers. Surface sediment in cropland and built-up areas was moderately polluted with cadmium and had high nitrogen and phosphorus levels, which disrupted the stability of bacterial communities. Significant differences in the α-diversity of bacterial communities were observed among different types of land use/cover. Bacterial α-diversity and energy sources were greater in woodlands than in cropland and built-up areas. The functional patterns of bacterial communities were shown that phosphorus levels and abundances of pathogenic bacteria and parasites were higher in cropland than in the other land use/cover types; Urban activities have resulted in the loss of the denitrification function and the accumulation of nitrogen in built-up areas, and bacteria in forested and agricultural areas play an important role in nitrogen degradation. Differences in heavy metal and nutrient inputs driven by land use/cover result in variation in the composition, structure, and function of bacterial communities.

Exploring seasonal variability in water quality of Nyabarongo River in Rwanda via water quality indices and DPSIR modelling

Understanding seasonal variations in water quality is crucial for effective management of freshwater rivers amidst changing environmental conditions. This study employed water quality index (WQI), metal index (MI), and pollution indices (PI) to comprehensively assess water quality and pollution levels in Nyabarongo River of Rwanda. A dynamic driver-pressure-state-impact-response model was used to identify factors influencing quality management. Over 4 years (2018-2021), 69 samples were collected on a monthly basis from each of the six monitoring stations across the Nyabarongo River throughout the four different seasons. Maximum WQI values were observed during dry long (52.90), dry short (21.478), long rain (93.66), and short rain (37.4) seasons, classified according to CCME 2001 guidelines. Ion concentrations exceeded WHO standards, with dominant ions being HCO 3 - andMg 2 + . Variations in water quality were influenced by factors such as calcium bicarbonate dominance in dry seasons and sodium sulfate dominance in rainy seasons. Evaporation and precipitation processes primarily influenced ionic composition. Metal indices (MI) exhibited wide ranges: long dry (0.2-433.0), short dry (0.1-174.3), long rain (0.1-223.7), and short rain (0.3-252.5). The hazard index values for Cu2+, Mn4+, Zn2+, and Cr3+ were below 1, ranging from 8.89E - 08 to 7.68E - 07 for adults and 2.30E - 07 to 5.02E - 06 for children through oral ingestion, and from 6.68E - 10 to 5.07E - 07 for adults and 6.61E - 09 to 2.54E - 06 for children through dermal contact. With a total carcinogenic risk of less than 1 for both ingestion and dermal contact, indicating no significant health risks yet send strong signals to Governmental management of the Nyabarongo River. Overall water quality was classified as marginal in long dry, poor in short dry, good in long rain, and poor again in short rain seasons.

A Modified Model for Quantitative Heavy Metal Source Apportionment and Pollution Pathway Identification

Current source apportionment models have successfully identified emission sources and quantified their contributions. However, when being utilized for heavy metal source apportion in soil, their accuracy needs to be improved, regarding migration patterns. Therefore, this work intended to improve the pre-existing principal component analysis and multiple linear regression with distance (PCA-MLRD) model to effectively locate pollution pathways (traffic emissions, irrigation water, atmospheric depositions, etc.) and achieve a more precise quantification. The dataset of soil heavy metals was collected from a typical area in the Chang-Zhu-Tan region, Hunan, China in 2021. The identification of the contribution of soil parent material was accomplished through enrichment factors and crustal reference elements. Meanwhile, the anthropogenic emission was identified with principal component analysis and GeoDetector. GeoDetector was used to accurately point to the pollution source from a spatial differentiation perspective. Subsequently, the pollution pathways linked to the identified sources were determined. Non-metal manufacturing factories were found to be significant anthropogenic sources of local soil contamination, mainly through rivers and atmospheric deposition. Furthermore, the influence of irrigation water on heavy metals showed a more pronounced effect within a distance of 1000 m, became weaker after that, and then gradually disappeared. This model may offer improved technical guidance for practical production and the management of soil heavy metal contamination.

Interactions of monolayer molybdenum disulfide sheets with metalloid antimony in aquatic environment: Adsorption, transformation, and joint toxicity

The tremendous application potentiality of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets, will unavoidably lead to increasing release into the environment, which could influence the fate and toxicity of co-existed contaminants. The present study discovered that 59.8 % of trivalent antimony [Sb(III)] was transformed by MoS2 to pentavalent Sb [Sb(V)] in aqueous solutions under light illumination, which was due to hole oxidation on the nanosheet surfaces. A synergistic toxicity between MoS2 and Sb(III, V) to algae (Chlorella vulgaris) was observed, as demonstrated by the lower median-effect concentrations of MoS2 + Sb(III)/Sb(V) (13.1 and 20.9 mg/L, respectively) than Sb(III)/Sb(V) (38.8 and 92.5 mg/L, respectively) alone. Particularly, MoS2 at noncytotoxic doses notably increased the bioaccumulation of Sb(III, V) in algae, causing aggravated oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and structural alterations. Metabolomics indicated that oxidative stress and membrane permeabilization were primarily associated with down-regulated amino acids involved in glutathione biosynthesis and unsaturated fatty acids. MoS2 co-exposure remarkably decreased the levels of thiol antidotes (glutathione and phytochelatins) and aggravated the inhibition on energy metabolism and ATP synthesis, compromising the Sb(III, V) detoxification and efflux. Additionally, extracellular P was captured by the nanosheets, also contributing to the uptake of Sb(V). Our findings emphasized the nonignorability of TMDs even at environmental levels in affecting the ecological hazard of metalloids, providing insight into comprehensive safety assessment of TMDs.

The composition and differences of antimony isotopic in sediments affected by the world's largest antimony deposit zone

Antimony (Sb) isotopic fingerprinting is a novel technique for stable metal isotope analysis, but the use of this technique is still limited, especially in sediments. In this study, the world's most important Sb mineralization belt (the Xikuangshan mineralization belt) was taken as the research object and the Sb isotopic composition and Sb enrichment characteristics in the sediments of water systems from different Sb mining areas located in the Zijiang River (ZR) Basin were systematically studied. The results showed that the ε123Sb values in the sediments of the ZR and its tributaries, such as those near the Longshan Sb-Au mine, the Xikuangshan Sb mine, and the Zhazixi Sb mine, were 0.50‒3.13 ε, 2.31‒3.99 ε, 3.12‒5.63 ε and 1.14‒2.91 ε, respectively, and there were obvious changes in Sb isotopic composition. Antimony was mainly enriched in the sediments due to anthropogenic sources. Dilution of Sb along the river and adsorption of Sb to Al-Fe oxides in the sediment did not lead to obvious Sb isotopic fractionation in the sediment, indicating that the Sb isotopic signature was conserved during transport along the river. The Sb isotopic signatures measured in mine-affected streams may have differed from those in the original Sb ore, and further investigation of Sb isotopic fingerprints from other possible sources and unknown geochemical processes is needed. This study reveals that the apparent differences in ε123Sb values across regions make Sb isotopic analysis a potentially suitable tool for tracing Sb sources and biogeochemical processes in the environment.

Comparative analysis of sediment quality indices using different reference values in an environmental protection area in Southeastern Brazil

Contamination of aquatic ecosystems by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is a concerning environmental issue, given their persistence, toxicity potential, and ability to accumulate in living organisms. Several studies have been conducted to assess the contamination of aquatic ecosystems by PTEs, using pollution and ecological risk indices that rely on the concentration of these elements in aquatic sediments. However, many of these studies use global reference values for calculating the indices, which can lead to misleading interpretations due to substantial variations in PTEs concentrations influenced by the geological characteristics of each region. Therefore, the use of regional reference values is more appropriate when available. This study aimed to investigate variations in the results of five indices, employing global, regional, and quality reference values, based on sediment samples collected from rivers in the Ipanema National Forest, a protected area in Brazil exposed to various anthropogenic pressures. The results revealed that elements such as Al, Fe, and Mn exceeded the limits allowed by legislation in water samples, while As and Cr surpassed the limits in sediment samples. Comparative analysis highlighted significant discrepancies in the results of the indices when global reference values were used compared to regional and quality reference values, especially for As and Ba. Thus, this study underscores the importance of establishing specific regional values for an accurate assessment of sediment quality and the risks associated with contamination by PTEs in different regions worldwide.

Risk assessment and strontium isotopic tracing of potentially toxic metals in creek sediments around a uranium mine, China

The contamination of creek sediments near industrially nuclear dominated site presents significant environmental challenges, particularly in identifying and quantifying potentially toxic metal (loid)s (PTMs). This study aims to measure the extent of contamination and apportion related sources for nine PTMs in alpine creek sediments near a typical uranium tailing dam from China, including strontium (Sr), rubidium (Rb), manganese (Mn), lithium (Li), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), using multivariate statistical approach and Sr isotopic compositions. The results show varying degrees of contamination in the sediments for some PTMs, i.e., Sr (16.1-39.6 mg/kg), Rb (171-675 mg/kg), Mn (224-2520 mg/kg), Li (11.6-78.8 mg/kg), Cd (0.31-1.38 mg/kg), and Zn (37.1-176 mg/kg). Multivariate statistical analyses indicate that Sr, Rb, Li, and Mn originated from the uranium tailing dam, while Cd and Zn were associated with abandoned agricultural activities, and Ni, Cu, and V were primarily linked to natural bedrock weathering. The Sr isotope fingerprint technique further suggests that 48.22-73.84% of Sr and associated PTMs in the sediments potentially derived from the uranium tailing dam. The combined use of multivariate statistical analysis and Sr isotopic fingerprint technique in alpine creek sediments enables more reliable insights into PTMs-induced pollution scenarios. The findings also offer unique perspectives for understanding and managing aqueous environments impacted by nuclear activities.

Assessment of heavy metal accumulation and potential risks in surface sediment of estuary area: A case study of Dagu river

Soil/sediment samples of four different land types were collected from aquaculture land, farmland, industrial land and river bottom sediment in the estuary area of Dagu River. The contents of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in 0-30 cm inner surface samples were detected, and the distribution characteristics of heavy metal content in surface soil/sediment of different land use types in the estuary area were analyzed. Local accumulation index method, potential risk index evaluation method and principal component analysis method were used to analyze the pollution status and sources of heavy metals. The results showed that the heavy metal accumulation levels in soil and sediment samples in the study area were As > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cr, and the heavy metal content exceeded the soil background value in Shandong Province, but the potential risks were all in a low risk state. The main sources of Cr, Zn and As are transportation sources and natural sources, while the main sources of Cd and Pb are agricultural.

Elevated Uptake and Translocation Patterns of Heavy Metals in Different Food Plants Parts and Their Impacts on Human Health

Irrigation with contaminated wastewater is a common practice in cultivation of crops and vegetables in many developing countries due to the scarcity of available fresh water. The present study has investigated the transfer and mobilization trends of heavy metals in different crops and vegetables plants grown in contaminated soil and waterbody. The translocation patterns of metals from polluted sources into different organs of plants bodies such as roots and edible parts and associated health risks have been evaluated simultaneously. Total of 180 different environmental samples including food plants, agricultural soil, and irrigation water were collected and analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations (Fe, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cu, Cd, As) in water, soil, and different parts of crops and vegetable plants were compared with the permissible levels reported by FAO/WHO, EU, and USEPA. Different metals contents within the food plants were found to be in the order of Fe > Mn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cd > As. Pollution load index (PLI) data indicate that soil is highly polluted with Cd as well as moderately contaminated by As and Cu. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) analysis showed excessive accumulation of some heavy metals in crops and vegetables. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and target carcinogenic risk (TCR) analysis data showed higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for both adult and children from the consumption of metal-contaminated food items. The results of metal pollution index (MPI), estimated daily intake (EDI), and hazard index (HI) analyses demonstrated the patterns of metals pollution in different food plants.

Accelerated export and transportation of heavy metals in watersheds under high geological backgrounds

The geological background level of metals plays a major role in mineral distribution and watershed diffuse heavy metal (HM) pollution. In this study, field research and a distributed hydrological model were used to analyze the distribution, sources, and pollution risk of watershed HMs in sediments with high geological HM backgrounds. Study showed that the mineral distribution and landcover promoted the transport differences of watershed HMs from upstream to the estuary. And the main sources of Co, Ni, and V in the estuarine sediments were natural sources. Sources of Pb and Zn were dominated by anthropogenic sources, accounting for 76% and 64% of their respective totals. The overall ecological risk of anthropogenically sourced HMs was dominated by Pb (46.6%), while the contributions of Co and Ni were also relatively high, accounting for 35.70% and 33.40%. Moreover, redundancy analysis showed that HM variations in the sediments were most sensitive to soil erosion and mineralizing rock distribution. The spatial patterns of watershed HMs from natural sources were significantly influenced by P loading, precipitation, and forest distribution. This combination of experiments and model improves the understanding of watershed HM variation and provides a new perspective for formulating effective watershed HM management strategies.

Comparison of antimony and arsenic behaviour at the river-lake junction in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin

As typical metalloid toxic elements widely distributed in environmental media, the geochemical behaviour of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) affects environmental safety. We selected the surface waters and sediments at the river-lake junction of Dongting Lake as the research objects, analysed the concentration and chemical partitioning of Sb and As, assessed its contamination and ecological risk levels, and discussed its sources and potential influencing factors. The concentrations of dissolved Sb and As in surface waters were low (< 5.46 µg/L), and the concentrations of Sb and As in surface sediments were 2.49-22.65 mg/kg and 11.10-136.34 mg/kg, respectively. Antimony and As in sediments were mainly enriched in the fraction of residues, but the proportion of As in bioavailability was significantly higher than that of Sb. Although the contamination level of Sb was higher than that of As, the risk assessment code (RAC) showed that the ecological risk level of As was higher than that of Sb. Rainwater erosion and mining activities (in the midstream of Zijiang River) were the main contaminated sources of Sb, while As was affect mainly by rainwater erosion. The contamination and ecological risk of Sb in the inlet of the Zijiang River should receive considerable attention, while those of As in the inlet of the Xiangjiang River should also be seriously considered. This study highlights the need for multi-index-based assessments of contamination and ecological risk and the importance of further studies on the environmental behaviour of metalloids in specific hydrological conditions, such as river-lake junctions.

Spatial distribution of heavy metals in the sediments of River Ganges, India: Occurrence, contamination, source identification, seasonal variations, mapping, and ecological risk evaluation

Present study analyzed the seasonal and spatial distribution patterns, sources, and ecological risks of seven heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the sediments of River Ganges, finding that the majority of concentrations were lithologic, except for Cd, which was significantly higher than background standards. Elevated values of geochemical indices viz. Igeo, CF, RI, Cd, mCd, HQ, mHQ, and PN suggest moderate to high ecological risk in the benthic environment and its organisms due to the synergistic effect of heavy metals. The PEC-Qmetals revealed 8-10 % toxicity in the upstream and downstream sites, due to the influence of agricultural activities. Multivariate statistical techniques (PCM and PCA) indicated that Cd and Pb predominantly originated from anthropogenic sources, while other metals primarily derived from geological background. These geochemical findings may help to understand the potential risks and recommend strategies to mitigate the effects of metallic contamination in river sediments.

Contamination and ecological risk assessment of Cr, As, Cd and Pb in water and sediment of the southeastern Bay of Bengal coast in a developing country

Safe levels of heavy metals in the surface water and sediment of the eastern Bay of Bengal coast have not been universally established. Current study characterized heavy metals such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in surface water and sediments of the most important fishing resource at the eastern Bay of Bengal coast, Bangladesh. Both water and sediment samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Considering both of the seasons, the mean concentrations of Cr, As, Cd, and Pb in water samples were 33.25, 8.14, 0.48, and 21.14 μg/L, respectively and in sediment were 30.47, 4.48, 0.20, and 19.98 mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metals concentration in water samples surpassed the acceptable limits of usable water quality, indicating that water from this water resource is not safe for drinking, cooking, bathing, and any other uses. Enrichment factors also directed minor enrichment of heavy metals in sediment of the coast. Other indexes for ecological risk assessment such as pollution load index (PLI), contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), modified contamination degree (mCd), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) also indicated that sediment of the coastal watershed was low contamination. In-depth inventorying of heavy metals in both water and sediment of the study area are required to determine ecosystem health for holistic risk assessment and management.

Distribution heterogeneity of sediment bacterial community in the river-lake system impacted by nonferrous metal mines: Diversity, composition and co-occurrence patterns

Metal(loid) pollution caused by mining activities can affect microbial communities. However, knowledge of the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence patterns of bacterial communities in aquatic systems impacted by nonferrous metal mines. Here, the metal(loid) contents and bacterial communities in sediments from the Zijiang River (tributary to mainstream) to Dongting Lake were investigated by geochemical and molecular biology methods. The results indicated that the river sediments had lower pH and higher ecological risk of metal(loid)s than the lake sediment. The diversity and composition of bacterial communities in river sediments significantly (p < 0.05) differed from those in lake sediments, showing distributional heterogeneity. The biomarkers of tributary, mainstream, and lake sediments were mainly members of Deltaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Nitrospirae, respectively, reflecting species sorting in different habitats. Multivariate statistical analysis demonstrated that total and bioavailable Sb, As, and Zn were positively correlated with bacterial community richness. pH, TOC, TN, and Zn were crucial factors in shaping the distribution difference of bacterial communities. Environment-bacteria network analysis indicated that pH, SO42-, and total and bioavailable As and Sb greatly influenced the bacterial composition at the genus level. Bacteria-bacteria network analysis manifested that the co-occurrence network in mainstream sediments with a higher risk of metal(loid) pollution exhibited higher modularity and connectivity, which might be the survival mechanism for bacterial communities adapted to metal(loid) pollution. This study can provide a theoretical basis for understanding the ecological status of aquatic systems.

Impact of shale gas wastewater discharge on the trace elements of the receiving river in the Sichuan Basin, China

The potential contamination of shale gas wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing to water resources is of growing concern, yet minimum attention has been paid to the impact of shale gas wastewater on the trace elements of the receiving waters. In this study, we analyzed the levels of 50 trace elements of a river that receives effluent from a shale gas wastewater treatment facility in the Sichuan Basin, China. Sixteen trace elements were detected in the surface water sample from the effluent discharge site, all of which were of higher concentrations than the upstream background level. Among the 16 shale gas wastewater-related elements, Sr, Ba, and Li were of elevated levels in the downstream water samples (24.9-44.2%, 5.0-8.0 times, and 17.8-22.8 times higher than the upstream background level, respectively). Shale gas wastewater effluent may be related to the accumulation of Sr, Ba, Li, and Cs in riverbed sediments near and/or downstream of the effluent discharge site and may lead to elevated pollution level of Sr and Li in downstream sediments. The ecological risk of the riverbed sediments was of medium to high level, with Cd contributing to the most risk, while shale gas wastewater-related elements are of low potential risk throughout the river. Our results suggested that shale gas wastewater effluent discharge had limited impacts on the trace elements of the receiving river within two years.

Preparation of basic magnesium carbonate nanosheets modified pumice and its adsorption of heavy metals

Heavy metal pollution in wastewater poses a grave danger to the environment and the human body. Pumice is a mineral with abundant reserves and low prices, and its prospect of heavy metal adsorbent is very broad. In this work, we modified pumice with basic magnesium carbonate nanosheets by a convenient hydrothermal synthesis. The adsorption capacity of heavy metals is greatly improved. The effects of different pH and adsorption dosages are investigated. All the optimum pH values for Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ are 5. The adsorption of three kinds of ions conforms to the quasi-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The theoretical adsorption capacities of Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+, which are calculated by the Langmuir model, are 235.29 mg/L, 595.24 mg/L, and 370.34 mg/L, respectively. The adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ fit the Langmuir model better. The Freundlich model is fitted well with the adsorption of Pb2+. In the experiment simulating real wastewater, the adsorption capacity of heavy metals is not affected. It also shows good reusability in three regeneration cycles. And Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O@pumice adsorption column showed the good removal efficiency of three heavy metals at different concentrations and different spatial velocities in the column experiment. Thus, it is believed that the Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O@pumice is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of heavy metals.

Heavy Metals in Surface Sediment of Plateau Lakes in Tibet, China: Occurrence, Risk Assessment, and Potential Sources

Tibetan Plateau lakes have high ecological value and play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. This research aimed to study the pollution characteristics, ecological risk, and potential sources of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the surface sediments of 12 Tibetan Plateau lakes. The results of the toxicity risk index (TRI) showed that only Gongzhu Tso (28.09) and La' ang Tso (20.25) had heavy metals that could pose a very high risk of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Hg posed the highest potential ecological risk to aquatic organisms. Based on the results of multiple analyses, we inferred that the contents of Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni in sediments of Tibetan lakes were influenced by industrial and agricultural development; Cd, Pb, and Zn were influenced by transport and atmospheric transport; and As was derived from geothermal activity and rock weathering.

Spatial and temporal distribution of heavy metals pollution and risk indices in surface sediments of Gomal Zam Dam Basin, Pakistan

Sediments were considered a sink and potential source of heavy metals in the aquatic system. For this purpose, the present study examined surface sediments for spatial and temporal variation of heavy metals pollution and risk indices in the Gomal Zam Dam Basin (GZDB), Pakistan. Sediment samples (n = 20) were collected from the GZDB, i.e., Gomal Zam Dam, its inlets, and outlets in the winter and summer seasons of 2020, and examined for heavy metals such as zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and cobalt (Co) concentrations. Among GZDB, results showed that the Zhob River Inlet had a higher levels of heavy metals in both seasons. The results revealed that pollution load index values were < 1, observing no pollution in the aquatic system. The risk indices values revealed that sampling sites showed no or very low risk during the summer, 84% of samples showed no or very low risk during the winter, and the rest noted with reasonable risks. Winter season showed higher average values of contamination and risk indices than summer. Statistical analyses revealed that the heavy metals contaminations were mainly due to geogenic sources of rock weathering and ore deposits, with minor contributions from anthropic activities. This study recommends regular monitoring of temporal studies on heavy metals contamination in the water of the GZDB.

Monte Carlo simulation and delayed geochemical hazard revealed the contamination and risk of arsenic in natural water sources

Due to its ubiquity and carcinogenicity, the geochemical behavior and health risks of arsenic (As) have been a research focus worldwide. A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the contamination and ecological and health risks of As in the Zijiang River (ZR)-a natural water source. The concentration ranges of As were separately 1.36-6.23 μg/L, 11.42-74.53 mg/kg, and 1.26-130.68 μg/L in surface waters (dissolved), sediments, and pore waters. The concentrations of As in the midstream pore waters and sediments were relatively high, which was related to mining, dam interception, and sediment resuspension. The Monte Carlo simulation results showed that the occurrence probability of As contamination and static risk in sediments was low, however, in the midstream, the secondary risk caused by the release of As should be given more consideration. In the sediments, the transformation paths and the dynamic risk of As were explored based on the delayed geochemical hazard model, showing that there was a probability of a potential burst of 26.47% - 55.88% in the sediments of the ZR. Although at the detected surface waters, the total risk of the noncarcinogenicity and carcinogenicity of As were low, overall adults have lower health risks than children, and As exposure in children should be of concern. This study complements the further understanding of the geochemical behavior of arsenic, which can be extended to other toxic metal(loid)s.

Comparative analysis of temporal variation of heavy metal accumulation by two sea urchin species from a harbour region, including pre and post COVID 19 lock down period

Sea urchins are marine invertebrates belonging to phylum Echinodermata, recognized as relevant biological tool for assessing environmental pollution. In the present study, we assessed the bioaccumulation potential of different heavy metals by two sea urchin species, Stomopneustes variolaris Lamarck, 1816 and Echinothrix diadema Linnaeus, 1758, collected from a harbour region, along the south west coast of India, during four different sampling periods for 2 years, from the same sea urchin bed. Heavy metals like Pb, Cr, As, Cd, Co, Se, Cu, Zn, Mn and Ni were analysed from water, sediment and different body parts of sea urchins, such as shell, spine, tooth, gut and gonad. The sampling periods also included the pre and post COVID 19 lockdown period during which the harbour activities were closed. The bio-water accumulation factor (BWAF), bio-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) and the metal content/test weight index (MTWI) were calculated, in order to compare the bioaccumulation of metals by both the species. The results showed that S. variolaris had higher bioaccumulation potential than E. diadema, for metals like Pb, As, Cr, Co and Cd especially in the soft body parts like gut and gonad. The hard parts of S. variolaris like shell, spine, and tooth also accumulated more Pb, Cu, Ni and Mn than E. diadema. Following the lockdown period, there was a decline in the concentration of all heavy metals in water, whereas in sediment, Pb, Cr, and Cu levels were reduced. The gut and gonad tissues of both the urchins showed a decrease in the concentration of most of the heavy metals following the lockdown phase and no significant reduction was observed in the hard parts. This study reveals the use of S. variolaris as an excellent bioindicator of heavy metal contamination in the marine environment which can be employed for coastal monitoring programs.

Magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal contents in sediments of Riam Kiwa, Riam Kanan and Martapura rivers, Kalimantan Selatan province, Indonesia

Kalimantan Selatan is proud of the Martapura River's natural and cultural history. Martapura tributaries include Riam Kanan and Kiwa. The Martapura River is essential because it provides clean water and a livelihood for riverside residents. Human-caused river pollution grows with population density (also known as anthropogenic pollutants). This study characterizes surface sediment magnetic characteristics and heavy metal contents along the Riam Kanan, Riam Kiwa, and Martapura rivers. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the magnetic signal with respect to heavy metal contents found in surface sediments taken from rivers and to confirm the use of the rock magnetism method in environmental studies in the study area. Surface sediment samples were gathered and tested for magnetic, heavy metal, and mineralogical content. According to the findings, the pseudo-single domain (PSD) magnetite mineral predominates among the magnetic minerals that can be found in the surface sediments of the rivers Riam Kanan, Riam Kiwa, and Martapura. This substantially greater grain size may be due to magnetic particles produced by erosion along the river banks. The mass-specific magnetic susceptibility of surface sediments ranges from 103.11 to 1403.64 × 10^-8 m³/kg, with an average value of 355.67 × 10^-8 m³/kg due to the peatland environment. Magnetic susceptibility strongly negatively correlates with heavy contents like Cu, Zn, and Hg, according to Pearson correlation analysis. Due to this correlation, magnetic susceptibility may indicate heavy metal pollution in certain rivers. This current study demonstrates the novelty of the relationship between magnetic susceptibility and the contents of heavy metals in surface sediments from rivers in peatland and tropical environments by illustrating how the relationship affects the magnetic susceptibility of the sediments.

Recognition, possible source, and risk assessment of organic pollutants in surface water from the Yongding River Basin by non-target and target screening

Organic pollutants in aquatic environment could have important implications on pollution stress on aquatic organisms and even on the risk of human exposure. Thus, revealing their occurrence in aquatic environment is essential for water quality monitoring and ecological risk purposes. In this study, a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography connected with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS) was applied, to enable non-target and target analysis of pollutants in the Yongding River Basin. Based on the isotopic patterns, accurate masses and standard substances, certain environmental contaminants were tentatively identified which including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), phenols, amines, etc. The compounds with the highest concentration were naphthalene (109.0 ng/L), 2,3-benzofuran (51.5 ng/L) and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (35.9 ng/L) in Guishui River. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharges were a main source of pollutants in Yongding River Basin, as the types of compounds screened in the downstream river were relatively similar to those from WWTPs. According to the target analysis, a number of pollutants were selected due to the acute toxicity and cumulative discharge from WWTPs and downstream rivers. Three PAHs (naphthalene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene and pyrene) homologues showed moderate risk to fish and H. Azteca in Yongding River Basin, while the rest of the measured chemicals showed low ecological impact across the entire study area based on the risk assessment. The results are helpful for understanding the necessity of high-throughput screening analysis for assessing water quality of rivers and the discharge emissions of pollutants from WWTPs to the river environment.

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the molecular mechanisms of Boehmeria nivea L. in response to antimonite and antimonate stresses

Soil antimony (Sb) pollution is a global concern that threatens food security and human health. Boehmeria nivea L. (ramie) is a promising phytoremediation plant exhibiting high tolerance and enrichment capacity for Sb. To reveal the molecular mechanisms and thus enhance the ramie uptake, transport, and detoxification of Sb with practical strategies, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to compare the physiological and transcriptomic responses of ramie towards antimonite (Sb(Ⅲ)) and antimonate (Sb(Ⅴ)). Phenotypic results showed that Sb(Ⅲ) had a stronger inhibitory effect on the growth of ramie. Root Sb content under Sb(Ⅲ) was 2.43 times higher than that in Sb(Ⅴ) treatment. Based on the ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-Seq) technique, 3915 and 999 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified under Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(Ⅴ), respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that ramie showed different adaptation strategies to Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V). Key DEGs and their involved pathways such as catalytic activity, carbohydrate metabolisms, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and cell wall modification were identified to perform crucial roles in Sb tolerance and detoxification. Two heavy metal-associated domain-type genes, six heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant proteins, and nine ABC transporters showed possible roles in the transport and detoxification of Sb. The significant upregulation of NRAMP5 and three NIPs suggested their roles in the transport of Sb(V). This study is the basis for future research to identify the exact genes and biological processes that can effectively enhance Sb accumulation or improve plant tolerance to Sb, thereby promoting the phytoremediation of Sb-polluted soils.

Ecological risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in selenium-rich soil with different land-use types

Dashan Village area is one of the representative areas in China with high selenium concentration in the natural environment. A total of 133 topsoil samples have been collected in the Dashan Village area to explore the potential toxic elements (PTEs) background concentrations in soils under different land-use types for a comprehensive PTEs risk assessment (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). The results show that the geometric mean concentrations of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn found in the soil of the Dashan Village area were lower than the control standard for soil contamination risk in agricultural land. However, the geometric mean concentrations of Cd exceeded their corresponding standard values. For different land-use types, geometric mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb in the arable soils were higher than in woodland soils and tea garden soils. Based on the potential ecological risk assessment, the woodland, arable and tea garden were at low-risk levels. Cadmium posed the highest ecological risk, while the other PTEs were of low risk in soils. Multiple statistical analyses and geostatistical analysis indicated that the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn and Se originated mainly from natural sources, while the concentrations of Cd, As and Hg could be influenced by anthropogenic activities. These results provide scientific support for the safe utilization and ecological sustainability of selenium-rich land resources.

Mercury contamination in the water and sediments of a typical inland river - Lake basin in China: Occurrence, sources, migration and risk assessment

In the area affected by non-ferrous metal mining activities, mercury (Hg) contamination in the water and sediments posed potential risks to ecology and human health. In this study, river water and sediment samples were collected in the Zijiang river - South Dongting Lake basin to analyze Hg residues, identify potential Hg sources and evaluate the ecological and health risks posed by Hg contamination. In this study, the average concentrations of THg, PHg, DHg and DMeHg in river water were 38.05 ± 27.13 ng/L, 25.18 ± 26.83 ng/L, 12.88 ± 9.64 ng/L and 0.29 ± 0.07 ng/L, respectively. The THg and MeHg contents in sediments were 234.24 ± 152.93 µg/kg and 0.48 ± 0.16 µg/kg, respectively. The more enrichment of Hg in sediments was observed in the Zijiang River than in the South Dongting Lake, especially in the upstream and midstream regions. Two potential Hg sources in the basin were identified by correlation matrix, principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The comparable Hg flux with other rivers worldwide was found in the Zijiang River (0.53 Mg/y). Furthermore, it was found by the delayed geochemical hazard (DGH) model that the ecological risk of Hg was more significant in the Zijiang River with more frequent transformation pathways. For different populations, the health risk values caused by Hg were all lower than the USEPA's guideline value. This study provided sound evidence for further control of Hg contamination.

Identifying Anthropogenic Sources of Heavy Metals in Alpine Peatlands over the Past 150 Years: Examples from Typical Peatlands in Altay Mountains, Northwest China

Alpine mountain peatlands are valuable archives of climatic and anthropogenic impact. However, the impacts of human activities on the Altay peatlands are poorly documented. Therefore, studying heavy metal (HM) concentrations, evaluating HM pollution levels, and identifying the sources in the Altay Mountain peatlands are crucial for revealing the intensity of human activities. The present study was performed on two peatland profiles: Jiadengyu (JDY) and Heihu (HH). The contents of HM and ²¹⁰Pb and ¹³⁷Cs dating technologies were used to construct a profile of anthropogenic pollutant distributions in the peatlands. Furthermore, the enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) of selected HMs were used to evaluate the risk assessment of HMs. The association of metals and assignment of their probable sources were examined using principal component analysis (PCA) and a positive matrix factorization model (PMF). The results showed that the concentrations of elements Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Ni, and As were at high levels in the two peatlands of the Altay Mountains, while the elements Hg and Cd were in low concentrations. Moreover, the concentrations of Cu, Cd, Hg, and Sb were higher than the background values of local element and posed a high environmental risk to the ecosystem. Combined with the results of the chronology, the peatland records indicated considerable growth in HMs concentrations from 1970 to 1990 related to recent anthropogenic activities. Additionally, the main sources of HMs are mining activities, domestic waste, and traffic sources in the two peatlands. Due to the environmental protection policies implemented since 2010, the natural processes have been the primary origin of HMs in peatlands, while emissions of industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste were still fundamental sources. The results of this study describe the sedimentary features of HMs in alpine mountains, and the data provide an essential theoretical basis for the evolutionary process through the characteristics of HM deposition.

Metal-mining-induced sediment pollution presents a potential ecological risk and threat to human health across China: A meta-analysis

Aquatic sediment polluted by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from mining activities represents a potential health "time bomb" for humans and the local ecology, but the integrated analysis of pollution and hazards of PTEs in sediment around typical metal mines in China is limited. Presently, the associated pollution status, spatial distribution, and ecological and health hazards of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, and As were investigated through index evaluation, spatial analysis, health risk assessment models, and Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, the sediment exhibited varying degrees of PTE contamination; notably, the level of Cd was 104.85 times higher than its background value, and it became the most enriched element in the surveyed sediment, followed in descending order by Cu, As, Zn, Pb, and Cr. Nationally, over 64.5% of metal-mining-affected sediment presented a very high ecological risk, contributed mostly by Cd (43.2%-98.7%) followed by As, Pb, and Cu; the risk contributed by both Cr and Zn was found to be negligible. The adverse health risk posed to children by most sediment was 1.72 and 6.46 times higher than that posed to adults for cancerous and noncancerous risks, respectively. The potential noncarcinogenic risks were mainly caused by As, which contributed over 78.9% of the Hazard Index values, then followed by Pb (>9.3%). For both children and adults, the carcinogenic risk of PTEs decreased in the following order: As > Cd > Cr > Pb. The investigated sediment was found seriously affected by nearby metal mines, especially those in regions with long-term and large-scale nonferrous-metal-mining activities. This study could provide a reference for policymakers to develop control strategies for PTE pollution in sediment around mining areas.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in sediments of Dajiuhu Lake Wetland in Shennongjia, China

The rapid development of modern society has resulted in discharge of large, heavy metal quantities into wetlands that have been continuously accumulating, causing severe pollution. Dajiuhu, located in the Shennongjia Forest District of Hubei Province in China, is a wetland of significant value internationally, serving as a model wetland ecosystem with heightened scientific research value. In this study, 27 surface sediment samples from nine sub-lakes in Dajiuhu were collected in August 2020. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the sediments were determined. The heavy metal occurrence and speciation characteristics were analyzed by an improved BCR (European Community Bureau of Reference) extraction method. Four methods were used to evaluate heavy metals' pollution degree and ecological risk. The possible source of heavy metals was inferred using correlation analysis and principal component analysis. The heavy metal content in the lake sediments of Dajiuhu wetland was from the highest to the lowest concentration as follows: Zn [Formula: see text] Cr [Formula: see text] Ni [Formula: see text] Pb [Formula: see text] Cu [Formula: see text] Cd. The average Cd content exceeded the national nature reserve threshold values, while the other heavy metals measured were below their respective threshold values. However, due to the occurrence of Pb and Cd in different forms, they still pose certain pollution and ecological risk to the lake wetlands. On the other hand, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Cu do not pose an ecological risk in the lakes of the Dajiuhu wetland. The spatial distribution of heavy metal content in the nine sub-lakes did vary significantly. Regarding the heavy metal sources in the lake sediments, Ni, Cr, and Cu originate from natural factors, and Cd and Pb have mainly anthropogenic origins. In contrast, Zn has both natural and anthropogenic origins. This study provides further insights into the study of heavy metal pollution in lake wetlands. It provides a framework and a direction for managing heavy metal pollution in the Dajiuhu wetland.

Occurrence, distribution, and migration of antimony in the Zijiang River around a superlarge antimony deposit zone

Under the environmental changes associated with mine tributaries entering mainstream rivers, differences in the distributions and migration behaviors of metal(loid)s can be found, but the behavior of antimony (Sb) is still poorly understood in this regard. We analyzed the occurrence, distribution, migration, and influencing factors of the Sb concentration in the water body of the Zijiang River (ZR) around a superlarge Sb deposit zone. The total Sb concentrations were 1.45-15.66 μg/L, 3.16-133.63 mg/kg, and 0.83-41.82 μg/L in the ZR surface waters, sediments, and pore waters, respectively; Sb(V) was the predominant form of Sb found in the surface waters. Mining and smelting were the main sources of Sb in the ZR. Spatially, the Sb concentration showed a decreasing trend from the tributaries to the ZR mainstream. In the ZR, the surface-water Sb concentration showed an increasing trend from the upstream to the downstream, while in the sediments and pore waters, the midstream Sb concentrations were higher than the upstream and downstream concentrations; this finding was related to the sediment retention and accumulation behaviors of reservoirs and dams resulting in the secondary release of Sb in sediments. Sb tended to be bound to the solid phase, dominated by amorphous iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides and calcium in sediments. This study highlights that, based on current Sb migration patterns, the accumulation of sediments carried by tributaries near Sb mines in the midstream ZR and the Sb pollution caused by sediment release will be long-term, and the related environmental consequences need to be further predicted.

Evaluation of potential toxic heavy metal contamination in soil, fly ash, vegetables and grain crops along with associated ecological and health risk assessment of nearby inhabitants of a thermal power station in Jharkhand (India)

The present study aimed to evaluate the potential toxic heavy metal (PTHM) concentrations and associated ecological and health risk of nearby inhabitants (child and adult populations) of the Bokaro thermal power station (BTPS), Jharkhand, India. The fly ash containing PTHMs is released from the thermal power plant and contaminates the soil of the nearby agricultural area, roadside area and residential area. Furthermore, PTHMs cause ecological risk as well as carcinogenic health effects in adults. Inhabitants are exposed to PTHMs through exposure pathways (for instance, direct ingestion, dermal contact and air inhalation), and PTHMs were examined in this study by calculating the estimated daily intake (EDI). The contamination factor (C_f) of Cd exceeded the threshold value throughout the study area, whereas the C_f of Hg was observed higher only in roadside soil (RSS). The geoaccumulation index (I_geo) of Cd was higher in the top soil of agricultural soil (AS) (7.39) and RSS (9.38). The level of PTHMs was monitored slightly higher in the topsoil of RSS. The ecological risk index (Eri) was detected to be the highest in RSS (1628.9). The permissible limit of Cd (0.05 mg kg^-1) and Pb (0.1 mg kg^-1) for all sampled vegetables and grain crops was surpassed. The transfer factor (TF) of the studied vegetables and grain crops was in the order of Cd > Cr > Pb > Hg > As. The results of the present study concluded that the hazard quotient (HQ) values for all PTHMs analysed in soil throughout the study area were < 1, which indicates that the child population was within the safe limit. However, the adult population was at a high risk of non-carcinogenic health effects due to increased permissible limits of Cd, Pb and Cr in vegetables and grain crops whereas the target carcinogenic risk (TCR) of Pb and Cr was higher and indicated that there may be a health risk of cancer in adults.

Biogeochemical behavior and pollution control of arsenic in mining areas: A review

Arsenic (As) is one of the most toxic metalloids that possess many forms. As is constantly migrating from abandoned mining area to the surrounding environment in both oxidation and reducing conditions, threatening human health and ecological safety. The biogeochemical reaction of As included oxidation, reduction, methylation, and demethylation, which is closely associated with microbial metabolisms. The study of the geochemical behavior of arsenic in mining areas and the microbial remediation of arsenic pollution have great potential and are hot spots for the prevention and remediation of arsenic pollution. In this study, we review the distribution and migration of arsenic in the mining area, focus on the geochemical cycle of arsenic under the action of microorganisms, and summarize the factors influencing the biogeochemical cycle of arsenic, and strategies for arsenic pollution in mining areas are also discussed. Finally, the problems of the risk control strategies and the future development direction are prospected.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated basin

As an indispensable type of pesticide, fungicides have been somewhat neglected compared to insecticides and herbicides. Heavy fungicide application in agricultural regions may generate downstream ecological concerns via in-stream transport, and the reservoir complicates the process. Monitoring fungicide exposure and exploring reservoir effect on fungicide transport is the key to develop the downstream strategies of agricultural diffusion pollution control. Here, we investigated the exposure, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated agricultural basin, located in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin, China. Seven fungicides were preliminarily identified and exhibited high detection frequencies (>85 %) in subsequent quantification of water samples from three sampling activities. The total concentration of fungicides ranged from 2.47 to 560.29 ng/L, 28.35 to 274.69 ng/L, and 13.61 to 146.968 ng/L in April, September, and November, respectively. Overall, the contamination levels of fungicides were in the ascending order of April < November < September. The spatial distribution of fungicides was closely associated with the dense of cultivated land, supporting its agricultural source. Furthermore, the reservoir plays a retention role in fungicides, alleviating ecological pressure downstream during the water storage period. Yet, due to the alternation of "source" and "sink" function of the reservoir, the contribution of Zijiang River to the fungicide load in the Yangtze River Basin still needs further attention. Although there is no acute risk posed by fungicides, even in the high-exposure scenario, the chronic ecological risk could not be ignored. Agricultural intensive regions, coupled with the reservoir, provide rather substantial chronic ecological concerns. Carbendazim has been designated as a priority pollutant that contributes significantly to cumulative chronic risk. Thus, we emphasize strengthening the supervision of fungicides in surface water and rationally restricting the use of carbendazim in agricultural operations.

Effects of hydrological connectivity project on heavy metals in Wuhan urban lakes on the time scale

Metal pollution in lakes threatens the ecological environment and human health. When environmental conditions change, heavy metals (HMs) in lake sediments can cause secondary pollution. At present, the implementation of the Hydrological Connectivity Project (HCP) is a significant means of lake governance. In this study, the accumulation, potential ecological risk, and sources of HMs in Four lakes (Houguan Lake, Tangxun Lake, Moshui Lake, and Chen Lake) in Wuhan city were compared before and after the completion of the HCP. The results indicated that the HCP reduced the enrichment factor of HMs and the potential ecological risk in the heavily polluted Moshui Lake but caused secondary pollution in the less polluted Houguan Lake. Moreover, the degree of purification of lakes that took a longer time to complete the HCP (Moshui Lake) was significantly higher than that of lakes with a shorter HCP completion time (Tangxun Lake). Water exchange caused by the HCP leading to exchange of the primary pollution source between Houguan Lake and Moshui Lake to a certain extent. This study provides a reference for evaluating the implementation effect of the HCP on HM pollution in lakes and for future governance planning.

The antibiotic resistance and risk heterogeneity between urban and rural rivers in a pharmaceutical industry dominated city in China: The importance of social-economic factors

Rivers are important environmental sources of human exposure to antibiotic resistance. Many factors can change antibiotic resistance in rivers, including bacterial communities, human activities, and environmental factors. However, the systematic comparison of the differences in antibiotics resistance and risks between urban rivers (URs) and rural rivers (RRs) in a pharmaceutical industry dominated city is still rare. In this study, Shijiazhuang City (China) was selected as an example to compare the differences in antibiotics resistance and risks between URs and RRs. The results showed higher concentrations of total quinolones (QNs) antibiotics in both water and sediment samples collected from URs than those from RRs. The subtypes and abundances of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in URs were significantly higher than those in RRs, and most emerging ARGs (including OXA-type, GES-type, MCR-type, and tet(X)) were only detected in URs. The ARGs were mainly influenced by QNs in URs and social-economic factors (SEs) in RRs. The composition of the bacterial community was significantly different between URs and RRs. The abundance of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria (ARPBs) and virulence factors (VFs) were higher in URs than those in RRs. Therein, 371 and 326 pathogen types were detected in URs and RRs, respectively. Most emerging ARGs showed a significantly positive correlation with priority ARPBs. Variance partitioning analysis revealed that SEs were the main driving factors of ARGs (80 %) and microbial communities (92 %) both in URs and RRs. Structural equation models indicated that antibiotics (QNs) and microbial communities were the most direct influence of ARGs in URs and RRs, respectively. The cumulative resistance risk of QNs was high in URs, but relatively low in RRs. Enrofloxacin and flumequine posed the highest risk in water and sediment, respectively. This study could help us to better manage and control the risk of antibiotic resistance in different rivers.

Kindergarten indoor dust metal(loid) exposure associates with elevated risk of anemia in children

Exposure to metals and metalloids in indoor dust is associated with adverse health effects in young children, but there is limited evidence for an association with anemia, which is at high risk in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to multiple metal(loid)s in indoor dust in kindergartens and the risk of anemia in children. In 2021, 2165 children from 25 kindergartens in eastern China were included in the study and had their hemoglobin (Hb) measured. Indoor dust samples were collected from the children's kindergartens, and the concentrations of 11 metals and metalloids in the samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The daily exposure dose (DED) of dust was used to assess the risk of metal(loid) exposure in the children. The results showed that of the 2165 children with available data, 351 (16.2 %) met the WHO definition of anemia. In multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses, we found that for each quartile of DED increase in Cd inhalation, child Hb levels decreased by 2.703 g/L (95 % CI: -4.055, -1.351), and the risk of anemia increased 1.602-fold (95 % CI: 1.087, 2.360). Mn ingestion was associated with increased odds of anemia [odds ratio (OR) = 1.760 (95 % CI: 1.217, 2.544)]. Interaction analysis indicated that metal(loid)s exposure effects were modified by child sex, age, and body mass index (BMI). Cluster analysis found that children at high risk of metal(loid) exposure in the school environment tended to have lower Hb levels and higher prevalence of anemia compared with those at low risk, although this was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that child school exposure to metal(loid)s in indoor dust is associated with an increased risk of developing anemia in children, modified by child sex, age, and BMI.

Ecological Risk Assessment and Source Apportionment of Heavy Metals in the Soil of an Opencast Mine in Xinjiang

To study the influence of open-pit coal mining on the surrounding soil environment and human health, this study selected the Hongshaquan coal mine in Xinjiang as the research area and took 31 soil samples from the dump and artificial forest of the mining area. The contents of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in the soil were analyzed. The pollution index method, geoaccumulation index method (I_geo), potential ecological risk index method, health ecological risk assessment model and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to evaluate and analyze the heavy metal pollution, potential ecological risk and health ecological risk of the soil. The results showed that compared with the background value of soil in Xinjiang, except for Pb, other heavy metal elements were essentially pollution-free and belonged to the low ecological risk area. The health risk assessment model showed that Pb and As were the main pollution factors of noncarcinogenic risk, and that exposure to Ni, Pb and As had a lower carcinogenic risk. The PCA showed that Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, As and Zn in the dump were from transportation and industrial activities, Cd was from natural resources, and Cr, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb were from transportation in the artificial forest. Cu came from industrial sources and As from soil parent material. The dump was more seriously disturbed by human factors than by artificial forests. Our research provides a reference for heavy metal pollution and source analysis caused by mining.

Spatial distribution of heavy metals in rice grains and human health risk assessment in Hunan Province, China

Rice is the main food in China, and its pollution by heavy metals has attracted widespread attention. In this study, rice grain samples were collected from 14 prefecture-level cities in Hunan Province, China. The contents of 9 heavy metals (i.e., As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sb) were measured using graphite digestion-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis were performed to evaluate the correlation among these heavy metals. In addition, ordinary kriging interpolation were applied to investigate the spatial distribution pattern of the heavy metals. Results showed that the average concentrations of these heavy metals were 0.48 (As), 1.28 (Cr), 0.03 (Co), 0.84 (Ni), 2.39 (Cu), 15.73 (Zn), 0.28 (Cd), 0.66 (Pb), and 0.0043 (Sb) mg/kg, respectively. The single-factor pollution index (SFPI) contamination assessment showed that As, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Cd accumulated significantly in the rice grain, with over-standard rates of 100%, 100%, 64.70%, 47.05%, and 44.12%, respectively. The Sb concentrations at the sampling sites were low, and there was no obvious pollution. Health risk assessment showed that the target hazard quotient followed the order of As> Cr> Cd> Pb> 1.0> Co> Cu> Zn> Ni> Sb, and the carcinogenic risk value was in the order of Cd> Ni> As> Cr> 1.0×10^-4> Pb. In particular, quick actions should be taken to regulate As, Cr, and Cd contents in rice because they posed greater non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks than the others to the local residents.

Response of microbial community to different land-use types, nutrients and heavy metals in urban river sediment

Nutrients and heavy metals (HM) in the sediment have an impact on microbial diversity and community structure. In this study, the distribution characteristics of nutrients, HM, and microbial community in the sediments along the Longsha River, a tributary of the Pearl River (or Zhu Jiang), China were investigated by analyzing samples from 11 sites. On the basis of the HM-contamination level, the 11 sampling sites were divided into three groups to explore the changes in microbial communities at different ecological risk levels. Results indicated that nutrient concentrations were higher near farmlands and residential lands, while the ecological risk of HM at the 11 sampling sites was from high to low as S10 > S2 > S9 > S6 > S11 > S7 > S5 > S8 > S3 > S4 > S1. Among these HM, Cu, Cr, and Ni had intense ecological risks. In addition, the results of Variance Partitioning Analysis (VPA) revealed a higher contribution of HM (35.93%) to microbial community variation than nutrients (12.08%) and pH (4.08%). Furthermore, the HM-tolerant microbial taxa (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Romboutsia, norank_o__Gaiellales, and etc.) were the dominant genera, and they were more dynamic around industrial lands, while microbes involved in the C, N, and S cycles (e.g., Smithella, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, Bacter oidetes_vadinHA17, and Syntrophorhabdus) were inhibited by HM, while their abundance was lower near industrial lands and highway but higher around residential lands. A three-unit monitoring program of land-use types, pollutants, and microbial communities was proposed. These results provide a new perspective on the control of riparian land-use types based on contaminants and microbes, and different microbial community response patterns may provide a reference for contaminant control in sediments with intensive industrial activities.

Fractionation analysis and risk assessment of potential toxic elements in reservoir sediments in central China

The pollution of potential toxic elements (PTEs) in the environment is a persistent issue and draws public attention constantly. However, there is no study comprehensively assessing the PTE pollution of water supply reservoirs in central China. This study determined the total contents and fractions of seven PTEs in 10 water supply reservoirs of central China, and evaluated PTE pollution risks by adopting various models. The results indicated that PTE pollution in water supply reservoirs was lower comparing that in estuary or river sediments, and Mn (manganese) was the predominant PTE in central China reservoirs. Fractionation analysis revealed that for B1 fraction (exchangeable/acid-soluble fraction) of Mn, Zn (zinc) and B2 fraction (reducible fraction) of Pb (lead) was high, while the effective state portion of Cr (chromium) was small. The monomial potential ecological risk indices and Igeo values were low among most samples, indicating overall modest PTE pollution. However, the results of the individual contamination factor (ICF) suggested that Pb might lead to potential health risks to human beings.

Bioaccumulation of 35 metal(loid)s in organs of a freshwater mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) and environmental implications in Poyang Lake, China

Benthic bioaccumulation of hazardous materials has been a great challenge to the health of lake ecosystems. As representative benthic macroinvertebrates, freshwater mussels and their accumulation characteristics have been regarded as effective indicators for assessing potential risks induced by sedimentary metal(loid)s in lakes. Here we profile organ-specific accumulation of 35 metal(loid)s in a freshwater mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) and their correlations to metal speciation in sediments of Poyang Lake, the largest lake of China. Significant organ-specific characteristics of metal accumulation were found in gills, though higher thallium (Tl) and selenium (Se) were found in the hepatopancreas, and greater arsenic (As) mostly accumulated in gonads. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the bioaccumulation of silver (Ag), cobalt (Co), and rare earth elements (ΣREE) in gills and As in gonads were closely associated with those in bioavailable fraction of sediments. Based on the biochemical analysis in the major organs, gills exhibited the highest enzymatic activity compared with hepatopancreas and gonads. Sedimentary metals, particularly for available Ag, Co, and ΣREE, play key roles in causing lipid peroxidation in gills and significantly promote the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD)/glutathione reductase (GR), while many metals (e.g., cadmium, manganese, Se) inhibit the glutathione (GSH) content in gonads and hepatopancreas. Our study indicates a high physiological sensitivity of mussels to these target metals, which highlights the significance of organ-specific accumulation of metal(loid)s in understanding the potential ecological risks of sedimentary metal(loid)s in lake ecosystems.

Distribution, source apportionment, and risk analysis of heavy metals in river sediments of the Urmia Lake basin

The anthropogenic heavy metal dissemination in the natural environment through riverine sediments is a major ecological and public health concern around the world. This study gives insight into the source apportionment and potential ecological and health risks of heavy metals in river sediments of the Urmia Lake basin, a natural world heritage located in northwestern Iran. A comprehensive sediment sampling was conducted in seven major rivers feeding the basin during the summer and winter of 2021. Samples were analyzed for zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) contents and a suite of chemical and physical properties. Subsequently, Pollution Index (PI), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Ecological Risk (ER), Hazard Quotients (HQ), Hazard Index (HI), and Carcinogenic Risk (CR) indices were determined. The mean concentration of heavy metals in all rivers' sediments exhibited the descending order of Ni > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd during both summer and winter. Multivariate analysis suggested that Zn was primarily initiated from natural processes, Cd and Pb were affected by human activities, and Cu along Ni were derived from natural and anthropogenic factors. The PI unveiled that most sediment samples were unpolluted to slightly polluted by Zn, Cu, and Pb, and slightly to moderately polluted by Cd. PLI and ER indices demonstrated that the sediment poses non to moderate pollution and low to moderate ecological risk, respectively. Using a human health risk approach, we found that the HI values of all heavy metals and THI were less than one for children and adults implying non-carcinogenic risk in the analyzed sediments. Carcinogenic effects of Cd and Pb at all rivers sediments via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact were almost within tolerable risks (1 × 10^-6 to 1 × 10^-4) for children and adults. PI, PLI, ER, HQ, HI, and CR index values of sediment samples during the summer were higher than those during the winter. This is attributed to the greater heavy metal concentrations and the lower water flow during summer. Our results provide practical information for better management and control of heavy metal pollution in aquatic-sedimentary ecosystems.

Multi-geostatistical analyses of the spatial distribution and source apportionment of potentially toxic elements in urban children's park soils in Pakistan: A risk assessment study

In the past few decades, contamination of urban children's parks (UCPs) with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has been attracting more and more interest; however, assessment of eco-environmental and child exposure risks particularly in developing countries remains limited. The current study investigated PTE (Cr, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) concentrations, potential sources, and their health risk assessment in UCP soils of 12 major cities in Pakistan. The results showed that the mean concentration of Ni exceeded the SEPA-permissible limit in all UCP sites, while other PTEs were found to be within acceptable limits. The soil properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and soil particles size were determined in UCPs soils. The contamination factor and pollution load index results indicated low to moderate pollution levels (CF < 3) and (PLI<1) for all PTEs except Ni in some of the selected cities. Quantile-quantile (Q-Q) plotting determined the normal distribution line for all PTEs in the UCPs. Principal component analysis showed the mixed sources of contamination from industrial emissions, fossil fuel combustion, vehicular emissions, wastewater irrigation, as well as solid waste disposal and natural sources of soil parent materials in all park sites. ANOVA results showed that all the PTEs except Cd had moderate to higher contamination values than the reference site. The risk assessment study revealed that children had high exposure to the selected PTEs via all exposure pathways. The hazard index (HI) mean value (1.82E+00) of Ni for all exposure pathways was greater than 1, while total risk value of Cr (1.00E-03) had exceeded USEPA limit, indicating cancer risk. Consequently, the study of UCPs soils revealed PTEs contamination that could pose a potential health risk to the local population in the studied UCPs regions of Pakistan. Thus, the present study recommends that the influx of PTEs originating from natural and anthropogenic sources should be mitigated and government should implement strict enforcement of environmental regulations and proper management, as well as air quality monitoring guidelines for public health should be strictly adopted to reduce traffic- and industrial emission-related to PTEs in metropolitan areas.

Spatial distribution of benthic toxicity and sediment-bound metals and arsenic in Guangzhou urban waterways: Influence of land use

The effects of land use on pollutant loads in sediments have been well documented; however, its influence on spatial variations in sediment toxicity remains largely unknown. In the present study, the toxicological effects of 17 sediments collected from Guangzhou waterways were evaluated using two benthic invertebrates (Chironomus dilutus and Hyalella azteca), along with quantification of heavy metals and arsenic in the sediments. The impacts of land-use configuration on sediment toxicity and occurrence of heavy metals and arsenic were analyzed. The sediments presented moderate lethality (<40 %) in the two test species and significantly altered their enzymatic activity, including the activities of oxidative stress biomarkers and acetylcholine esterase. Metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and arsenic were detected in all the sediments, with total concentrations ranging from 238 to 1019 mg/kg of dry weight. Both the toxicity and chemical results displayed spatially dependent patterns but were related to different land use types. Toxicity was most influenced by agricultural and aquacultural activities, while metal and arsenic pollution was most influenced by urban land areas. The present findings are expected to provide essential knowledge for developing strategies that reduce the chemical pollution and ecotoxicological risk in sediments.

Pollution, Ecological Risk and Source Identification of Heavy Metals in Sediments from the Huafei River in the Eastern Suburbs of Kaifeng, China

Rivers in urban environments are significant components of their ecosystems but remain under threat of pollution from unchecked discharges of industrial sewage and domestic wastewater. Such river pollution, particularly over the longer term involving heavy metals, is an issue of worldwide concern regarding risks to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, we investigate the long-term pollution characteristics of the Huafei River, an important urban river in Kaifeng, China. River sedimentary samples were analyzed, assessing the degree and ecological risk of heavy metal pollution using the geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index methods, whilst Pearson's correlation, principal component and cluster analyses were used to identify the sources of pollution. The results show that heavy metal concentrations are significantly higher than their corresponding fluvo-aquic soil background values in China, and the geo-accumulation indexes indicate that of the eight heavy metals identified, Hg is most prevalent, followed in sequence by Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni > As > Cr. The potential ecological risk index of the Huafei River is very high, with the potential ecological risk intensity highest in the midstream and downstream sections, where it is recommended that pollution control is carried out, especially concerning Hg and Cd. Long-term sequence analysis indicates that Cu and Pb dropped sharply from 1998 to 2017, but rebounded in 2019, and that Zn shows a continuous decreasing trend. Four main sources for the heavy metal contaminants were identified: Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Hg derived mainly from industrial activities, traffic sources and natural sources; Cd originated mainly from industrial and agricultural activities; whilst As was mainly associated with industrial activities. Thus, special attention should be paid to Hg and Cd, and measures must be taken to prevent further anthropogenic influence on heavy metal pollution.

Source, Distribution, and Risk Estimation of Hazardous Elements in Farmland Soils in a Typical Alluvial-Lacustrine Transition Basin, Hunan Province

Increased concentrations of heavy metals in soil due to anthropogenic activities pose a considerable threat to human health and require constant attention. This study investigates the spatial distribution of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Sb) and metalloids (As) in a typical alluvial-lacustrine transition basin and calculates the bioavailable forms of elements posing a direct threat. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to identify the sources of contaminants, after which an ecological risk assessment was conducted. Total (T) As, Pb, and Zn decreased with the depth, whereas Cd and Sb increased in surface (0-20 cm) soil. Bioavailable (Bio) Cd and Pb in the topsoil were regulated by pH and organic matter, whereas Bio-Zn was regulated by soil pH. Within deeper soil layers, the combined effects of pH, organic matter, and clay contents regulated the bio-elements. The results of multiple methods and local investigation showed that TSb (65.3%) was mainly derived from mining activities, TCd (53.2%) and TZn (53.7%) were derived from direct pollution by industrial production and agricultural fertilizers, respectively, and TA (55.6%) was mainly derived from the soil parent material. TPb was related to vehicle exhaust emissions and atmospheric deposition from industrial activities. Although the potential ecological risk in the study area remains relatively low, there is a need for continuous monitoring of the potential ecological risks of Cd and Sb.
