Simulating transport, flux, and ecological risk of perfluorooctanoate in a river affected by a major fluorochemical manufacturer in northern China

Integrating experiments with modeling to understand key bacterial taxa dynamics after episodic mixing of a stratified water column

Hydraulic mixing of stratified reservoirs homogenizes physicochemical gradients and microbial communities. This has potential repercussions for microbial metabolism and water quality, not least in dams and hydraulically controlled waters. A better understanding of how key taxa respond to mixing of such stratified water bodies is needed to understand and predict the impact of hydraulic operations on microbial communities and nutrient dynamics in reservoirs. We studied taxa transitions between cyanobacteria and sulfur-transforming bacteria following mixing of stratified water columns in bioreactors and complemented the experimental approach with a biogeochemical model. Model predictions were consistent with experimental observations, suggesting that stable stratification of DO is restored within 24 h after episodic and complete mixing, at least in the absence of other more continuous disturbances. Subsequently, the concentration of S2- gradually return to pre-mixing states, with higher concentration at the surface and lower in the bottom waters, while the opposite pattern was seen for SO42-. The total abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria and phototrophic sulfur bacteria increased markedly after 24h of mixing. The model further predicted that the rapid re-oxygenation of the entire water column by aeration will effectively suppress the water stratification and the growth of sulfur-transforming bacteria. Based on these results, we suggest that a reduction of thermocline depth by optimal flow regulation in reservoirs may also depress sulfur transforming bacteria and thereby constrain sulfur transformation processes and pollutant accumulation. The simulation of microbial nutrient transformation processes in vertically stratified waters can provide new insights about effective environmental management measures for reservoirs.

Population exposure to emerging perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) via drinking water resources: Application of multivariate statistics and risk assessment models

This study assessed the occurrence, origins, and potential risks of emerging perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) for the first time in drinking water resources of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. In total, 13 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with carbon (C) chains C4-C18 and 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) with C chains C4-C10 were tested in both surface and ground drinking water samples using a high-performance liquid chromatography system (HPLC) equipped with an Agilent 6460 Triple Quadrupole liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system. The concentrations of ∑PFCAs, ∑PFSAs, and ∑PFAAs in drinking water ranged from 1.46 to 72.85, 0.30-8.03, and 1.76-80.88 ng/L, respectively. Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), and perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) were the dominant analytes in surface water followed by ground water, while the concentration of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA), and perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA) were greater than long-chain PFOA and PFOS. The correlation statistics, which showed a strong correlation (p < 0.05) between the PFAA analytes, potentially indicated the fate of PFAAs in the area's drinking water sources, whereas the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) statistics identified industrial, domestic, agricultural, and commercial applications as potential point and non-point sources of PFAA contamination in the area. From risk perspectives, the overall PFAA toxicity in water resources was within the ecological health risk thresholds, where for the human population the hazard quotient (HQ) values of individual PFAAs were < 1, indicating no risk from the drinking water sources; however, the hazard index (HI) from the ∑PFAAs should not be underestimated, as it may significantly result in potential chronic toxicity to exposed adults, followed by children.

A high-precision prediction for spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment of antibiotics in an urban watershed using a hydrodynamic model

A methodology for the high-precision prediction and risk assessment of antibiotics at the watershed scale was established. Antibiotic emission inventory and attenuation processes were integrated into the MIKE 11 model to predict the spatiotemporal distribution of norfloxacin, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, roxithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole in the Nanfei River watershed, China. Considering the variations in antibiotic removal in sewage treatment plants, manure composting, and lagoon systems, the high, medium, and low removal efficiencies of selected antibiotics across China were obtained and used as the best, expected, and worst scenarios, respectively, to evaluate the uncertainty of antibiotic emissions. The predicted concentrations were comparable to antibiotic measurements after flow calibration. The prediction results showed that the highest concentration exposures were mainly concentrated in urban areas with a dense population. Flow variations controlled the temporal distribution characteristics of antibiotics via the dilution effect, and the concentrations of antibiotics in the dry season were 3.1 times higher than those in the wet season. The median concentrations of norfloxacin and erythromycin ranged from 111.36 ng/L to 592.33 ng/L and 106.63 ng/L to 563.01 ng/L, respectively, which both posed a high risk to cyanobacteria and a medium risk to spreading antibiotic resistance. Scenario analysis further demonstrated that high removal efficiencies of these antibiotics can considerably reduce the potential ecotoxicity risks and bacterial resistance selection. The developed methodology for predicting the distribution and risk of antibiotics was suitable for the risk assessment and control strategy of human- and livestock-sourced pollutants.

First report of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the Indus Drainage System: Occurrence, source and environmental risk

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are of global interest due to their persistence in the aquatic environment. This study assessed the occurrence of PFAAs in the Indus Drainage System and discerned their potential sources and environmental risks for the first time in Pakistan. 13 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) were analyzed to verify the dominant prevalence of short-chain PFAAs in the environment since the phase-out of long-chain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). A significant variation (p ≤ 0.05) of individual PFAAs between the monitoring sites was confirmed by data normality tests Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk, suggesting that different locations contribute differently to individual PFAAs concentrations. ΣPFAAs concentrations in riverine water and sediments ranged from 2.28 to 221.75 ng/L and 0.78-29.19 ng/g dw, respectively. PFBA, PFPeA, and PFHxA were the most abundant PFAAs, and on average accounted for 14.64, 13.75, and 12.97 ng/L of ∑PFAAs in riverine water and 0.34, 0.64, and 0.79 ng/g dw of ∑PFAAs in sediments. ΣPFAAs mean contamination in the drainage was significantly (p < 0.05) high in River Chenab followed by River Indus > Soan > Ravi > Kabul > Swat with more prevalence of short-chain (C4-C7) PFCAs followed by PFOA, PFBS, PFOS, PFNA, PFDA, PFHxS, PFUnDA, and PFDoDA. The correlation analysis determined the PFAAs' fate and distribution along the drainage, indicating that PFAAs with carbon chains C4-C12, except for PFSAs with carbon chains C6-C8, were most likely contaminated by the same source, the values of Kd and Koc increased linearly with the length of the perfluoroalkyl carbon chain, better understand the transport and partitioning of individual PFAAs between riverine water and sediments, where the HCA and PCA discerned industrial/municipal wastewater discharge, agricultural and surface runoff from nearby fields, and urban localities as potential sources of PFAAs contamination. The collective mass flux of short-chain (C4-C7) PFCAs was 5x higher than that of PFOS + PFOA, suggesting a continuous shift in the production and usage of fluorinated replacements for long-chain PFAAs with short-chain homologs. In terms of risk, individual PFAAs pollution in the drainage was within the world's risk thresholds for human health, with the exception of PFBA, PFPeA, PFHpA, PFHxA, PFOA, PFNA, and PFBS, whereas for ecology, the concentrations of individual PFAAs did not exceed the ecological risk thresholds of the United States of America, Canada, European Union (EU), Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, with the exception of PFSAs, whose detected individual concentrations were significantly higher than the EU, Australian and New Zealander PFSAs guidelines of 0.002 μg/L, 0.00047 μg/L, 0.00065 μg/L, 0.00013 μg/L, and 0.00023 μg/L, respectively, which may pose chronic risks to the regional ecosystem and population.

Source, fate, transport and modelling of selected emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment: Current status and future perspectives

The occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments represent a major threat to water resources due to their potential risks to the ecosystem and humans even at trace levels. Mathematical modelling can be a useful tool as a comprehensive approach to study their fate and transport in natural waters. However, modelling studies of the occurrence, fate and transport of ECs in aquatic environments have generally received far less attention than the more widespread field and laboratory studies. In this study, we reviewed the current status of modelling ECs based on selected representative ECs, including their sources, fate and various mechanisms as well as their interactions with the surrounding environments in aquatic ecosystems, and explore future development and perspectives in this area. Most importantly, the principles, mathematical derivations, ongoing development and applications of various ECs models in different geographical regions are critically reviewed and discussed. The recommendations for improving data quality, monitoring planning, model development and applications were also suggested. The outcomes of this review can lay down a future framework in developing a comprehensive ECs modelling approach to help researchers and policymakers effectively manage water resources impacted by rising levels of ECs.

An introduction to the sources, fate, occurrence and effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals released into the environment

Many classes of compounds are known or suspected to disrupt the endocrine system of vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. This review of the sources and fate of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment includes classes of compounds that are "legacy" contaminants, as well as contaminants of emerging concern. EDCs included for discussion are organochlorine compounds, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, brominated flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, alkylphenols, phthalates, bisphenol A and analogues, pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse and steroid hormones, personal care products, and organotins. An exhaustive survey of the fate of these contaminants in all environmental media (e.g., air, water, soil, biota, foods and beverages) is beyond the scope of this review, so the priority is to highlight the fate of EDCs in environmental media for which there is a clear link between exposure and endocrine effects in humans or in biota from other taxa. Where appropriate, linkages are also made between the fate of EDCs and regulatory limits such as environmental quality guidelines for water and sediments and total daily intake values for humans.

Shift in the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids by sluice gates in the multi-environment media of rivers

The impact of sluice operations on the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) remains poorly understood. In this study, the distribution of PFAAs was investigated in water, suspended particles, sediment, and pore water from the upstream and downstream sections of six sluice gates along the Wangyu River, China. The target PFAAs were widely distributed in the dissolved phase (∑PFAAs: 447.61 ± 180.26 ng/L), particle phase (∑PFAAs: 2040.95 ± 1870.88 ng/g dw), sedimentary phase (∑PFAAs: 39.42 ± 35.38 ng/g dw), and pore water phase (∑PFAAs: 8172.54 ± 4278.60 ng/L). Our data suggest predominant detections of short-chain PFAAs such as perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in the four environmental media. Sediment pore water appeared as an essential repository and potential source for PFAA re-release to the river environment. The levels of PFAAs in the dissolved and suspended particle phase upstream of the sluices were significantly lower than those downstream, while the situation in the sediment and pore water phase was the opposite. Sluice operation caused PFAA redistribution among the multi-environment media but did not change the PFAA composition, which had the significant effect on the partition behavior of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) between particles and water, as well as changed the migration pattern of PFOA, PFNA and PFOS from equilibrium to the migration state. Quantitative prediction models were developed for simulating fate of PFAAs in gate-controlled river, and the major factors affecting the distribution and fate of PFAAs were identified. Our findings provide insights into the redistribution mechanisms of PFAAs and an understanding of their environmental fate.

Occurrence and transport of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in a Yangtze River water diversion project during water diversion and flooding

Water diversion is increasingly utilized for water supply, flood control, irrigation, and water quality improvement in many water bodies globally. Our findings indicate that micropollutants such as perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) can be transported via dual-source water diversion projects during water diversion and flood discharge, which may negatively impact both receiving water bodies. However, the sources, spatiotemporal variations, and fluxes of PFAAs under water diversion projects remain unclear. Here we report patterns of 18 PFAA compounds in the surface water at 14 sites of a dual-source water diversion project (Wangyu River) connecting the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake in China. We found multiple contamination hotspots with PFHxA and PFOA dominantly originating from industrial and domestic sources during water diversion from the Yangtze River to Taihu Lake. During the severe flooding in summer 2020, PFAA concentrations ranged from 82.0 to 114.0 ng L^-1, while the concentrations and relative contributions of individual perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids (PFSAs) increased along the mainstream due to the tributaries' contribution and high contamination level in the lake. Based on the spatiotemporal patterns of PFAA pollution, the flux of total PFAAs including both dissolved-phase and SS-phase into Taihu Lake was estimated as 26.6 kg in January 2020 as a reference value for water diversion. To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe the sources, occurrences, and transport of PFAAs in a dual-source water diversion project during water diversion and flooding. The results provide a novel perspective regarding the ecological safety of dual-source water diversion projects.

Integrating experiments with system-level biogeochemical modeling to understand nitrogen cycling of reservoir sediments at elevated hydrostatic pressure

Impoundment of rivers to construct reservoirs for hydropower and irrigation greatly increase the hydrostatic pressure acting on river sediments with potential repercussions for ecosystem-level microbial activity and metabolism. Understanding the functioning and responses of key biogeochemical cycles such as that of nitrogen cycling to shifting hydrostatic pressure is needed to estimate and predict the systemic nutrient dynamics in deep-water reservoirs. We studied the functioning of bacterial communities involved in nitrogen transformation in bioreactors maintained under contrasting hydrostatic pressures (0.5 MPa-3.0 MPa) and complemented the experimental approach with a functional gene-informed biogeochemical model. The model predictions were broadly consistent with observations from the experiment, suggesting that the rates of N₂O production decreased while the sediment concentration of nitrite increased significantly with increasing pressure, at least when exceeding 1.0 MPa. Changes in nitrite reduction (nirS) and aerobic ammonia oxidation (amoA) genes abundances were in accordance with the observed changes in N₂O production and nitrite levels. Moreover, the model predicted that the higher pressures (P > 1.5 MPa) would intensify the inhibition of N₂ production via denitrification and result in an accumulation of ammonia in the sediment along with a decrease in dissolved oxygen. The results imply that increased hydrostatic pressure caused by dam constructions may have a strong effect on microbial nitrogen conversion, and that this may result in lower nitrogen removal.

A comprehensive modelling approach to understanding the fate, transport and potential risks of emerging contaminants in a tropical reservoir

We developed a comprehensive integrated water quality modeling approach towards a better understanding of the fate and transport of emerging contaminants and comprehensive assessment of their potential risks in a tropical reservoir. Two representative emerging contaminants, namely Bisphenol A (BPA) and N, N-diethyltoluamide (DEET), were selected for this study. Unlike the traditional water quality modeling approach, the target emerging contaminants were modelled in four multi-compartments and coupled to a 3D-dimensional eutrophication model to investigate their interactions with other water quality state variables. First, the integrated model was calibrated and validated in four multi-compartments against an observed dataset in 2014. Subsequently, the correlation analysis between emerging contaminants and general water quality parameters were conducted. The potential ecological risks in this reservoir were also assessed via the trophic state index (TSI) and coupled to a species sensitivity distribution (SSD)-Risk Quotient (RQ) method. Finally, the model was applied to describe the dynamics of the two emerging contaminants and examine the direct and indirect influences of other environmental factors on their multi-compartment distributions in the aquatic environment. The comprehensive approach provides new insights into dynamic modeling of the fate and transport of emerging contaminants, their interactions with other state variables as well as an assessment of their potential risks in aquatic ecosystems.

Coupling Genomics and Hydraulic Information to Predict the Nitrogen Dynamics in a Channel Confluence

The simulation of nitrogen dynamics in urban channel confluences is essential for the evaluation and improvement of water quality. The omics-based modeling approaches that have been rapidly developed have been increasingly applied to characterize metabolisms of the microbial community and transformation of the associated materials. However, the transport of microorganisms and chemicals within and among different phases, which could be the rate-limiting step for the nitrogen dynamics, are always neglected or oversimplified in omics-based models. Therefore, this study proposes a novel simulation system coupling genomic and hydraulic information to simulate transport and transformation processes and provide predictions of nitrogen dynamics in a confluence. The proposed model was able to capture multiphase mass transport, microbial population dynamics, and nitrogen transformation and accurately predict gene abundances and nitrogen concentrations in both water and sediment; the mean relative errors were all lower than 40%. The model emphasized the importance of transport processes, which contributed more than 90% to gene abundances and chemical concentrations. Moreover, the simulation of reaction rates exhibited the specific nitrogen transformation processes in the confluence. The sulfide oxidation and the nitrate reduction and anaerobic ammonium oxidation, with the participation of the genes nap and hzo, respectively, were promoted as the main processes of nitrate and nitrite reduction.

Distribution behavior and risk assessment of emerging perfluoroalkyl acids in multiple environmental media at Luoma Lake, East China

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in various environments. This has caused great public concern, particularly in the shallow freshwater lake region, where the lake, rivers, and estuaries form a highly interconnected continuum. However, little is known about the environmental behaviors of PFAAs in the continuum. For the first time, a high-resolution monitoring framework covering the river-estuary-lake continuum of Luoma Lake was built, and the concentrations, sources, and environmental fates of PFAAs were identified and analyzed. The results revealed that the total concentration of PFAAs was at a moderate level in the water and at a high level in the sediment compared to global levels respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant PFAA in the continuum. In particular, the ∑PFAA concentration in the particle phase was much higher than that in the sediment phase. Distinct spatial heterogeneities were observed in the behaviors of distribution and the multiphase fate of PFAAs in the continuum, mainly driven by the turbulent mixing during transport, dilution of lake water, and spatial differences of hydrodynamic features and sedimentary properties among the sub-regions. Interestingly, the pH of the sediment and water had significant effects on the water-sediment portioning of PFAAs in contrasting ways. Furthermore, based on the composition of the sediments, four possible migration paths for PFAAs were deduced and the main sources of PFAAs were identified as sewage, domestic, and industrial effluents using the positive matrix factorization model. During the human health assessment, no risk was found under the median exposure scenario; however, under the high exposure scenario, PFAAs posed uncertain risks to human health, which cannot be ignored. This study provides basic information for simulating the fate and transport of PFAAs in the continuum and is significant for developing cost-effective control and remediation strategies in the near future.

Correlation Analysis of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Regional U.S. Precipitation Events

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are transported in the atmosphere, leading to both wet and dry deposition to the surface. The concentrations of 15 PFAS were measured at six locations in the Ohio-Indiana region of the U.S. during the summer of 2019 and compared to samples collected at a distant site in NW Wyoming. ΣPFAS concentrations ranged from 50-850 ng L^-1, with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) being the dominant compound (~90%). Concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFOS) were similar to amounts observed over the past 20 years, indicating persistence in the atmosphere despite regulatory action, and the newer species HFPO-DA (GenX) was also widely detected in rainwater. ANOVA modeling and correlation matrices were used to determine association of PFAS concentrations, location, and functional group and chain length. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in PFAS profiles across sites separated by 10-100 km indicate that local point sources strongly contribute to wet deposition. This work introduces correlation plots for PFAS that allow rapid visual comparison of multi-analyte and multi-site data sets.

Integrating Microbial Community Assembly and Fluid Kinetics to Decouple Nitrogen Dynamics in an Urban Channel Confluence

Understanding the characteristics of biogeochemical processes in urban channel confluences is essential for the evaluation and improvement of water environmental capacity. However, influences of biogeochemical processes in confluence were always overlooked or simply parametrized since the transformation processes controlled by microbial community assembly were hard to quantify. To address this knowledge gap, the present study proposed a novel mathematical modeling system, based on microbial community assembly theory and fluid kinetics, to decouple nitrogen dynamics into flow-induced transport and microorganism-induced transformation processes, and quantified their contributions to nitrogen concentrations. Results revealed that variable selection processes (including hydrodynamic conditions) contributed to significant difference in microbial communities among different hydraulic regions. Variation in microbial communities further shifted transformation processes. Rhodobacterales and Sphingomonadales, which were reported to be vital participants in denitrification process, were enriched in flow separation region, and promoted it as a hotspot for nitrogen removal. In the flow separation region, microorganism-induced transformation processes accounted for 56% of total nitrogen removal, which was significantly higher than that in other regions (12% on average; p < 0.01). Results and findings could provide useful information for the improvement of water environmental capacity.

Mechanism of immunosuppression in zebrafish (Danio rerio) spleen induced by environmentally relevant concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been identified as a new persistent organic pollutant. This pollutant is ubiquitous in water and environments. Although PFOA is toxic to fishes, the precise immunotoxicological mechanism remains unclear. In this study, HPLC-MS analysis proved that PFOA can accumulate in the spleen of zebrafish. As comparison of 7-day and 14-day data, the cumulative content in the spleen significantly increased by 26% even in the 0.1 mg/L PFOA-treated group. Morphological observations revealed that PFOA can damage immune cells in zebrafish spleen by inducing vacuolization, lipofuscin granule production, and mitochondrial swelling. The Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2)/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (myd88)/NF-κB (P65) pathway can mediate the mRNA expression levels of interferon (IFN) and B cell-activating factor (BAFF); immunoglobulin (Ig) secretion is further regulated. RT-PCR results indicated that the expression levels of P65 and IFN in the 1 mg/L group after PFOA exposure for 7 d increased by 4.03- and 3.28-fold, respectively, in a dose-dependent manner compared with those of the control group. The linear correlation coefficient (r²) was analyzed, and the results indicated that the Ig-mediated pathway can be affected by PFOA. For example, the r² between IgD and P65 decreased from 0.641 (7 d) to 0.295 (14 d) after the cells were exposed to PFOA for a prolonged time; the r² between IgD and IFN increased from 0.562 (7 d) to 0.808 (14 d). The triangle plot method strongly demonstrated that increased PFOA concentration and prolonged exposure to PFOA can inhibit Ig secretion. Therefore, immune organs, particularly the spleen, of zebrafish are vulnerable to PFOA. These results can help to improve the understanding of the possible noncarcinogenic risk mechanisms induced by PFOA.

Bend-induced sediment redistribution regulates deterministic processes and stimulates microbial nitrogen removal in coarse sediment regions of river

Understanding the differences of biogeochemical processes between straight and bent channel is important for weighting them in urban river planning and reconstruction. Shifts in the assembly of the sediment microbial community of bent channels are key, but understudied, component of bend-induced increases in biogeochemical reaction rates. Here, the assembly of microbial community and its feedback to nitrogen transformation in urban river bends were firstly studied by coupling ecological theory, aqueous biogeochemistry, DNA sequencing, and hydrodynamic profiling. It was found that the sediment particle size was the main driving force for producing the significant difference of microbial community structure in river bends. Homogeneous selection, quantified by β-nearest taxon index (βNTI), emerged in the urban river bends and accounted for 79.2% of all ecological processes. Moreover, a significant positive relationship between βNTI and the sediment particle size indicated that shifts in particle size were associated with shifts in deterministic selective pressures, which govern the composition of the microbial community. The significant correlation between the βNTI and changes in nitrate concentration also indicated that nitrate leads to deterministic processes, which select microbial taxa. These microbial taxa which are governed by deterministic processes show specific nitrogen transformation traits, and react on the nitrate concentration. A multiphase transport model allowed the separation of the effects of deterministic processes on nitrogen concentration from measured concentration influenced by complex biogeochemical processes. The results indicated that both the ammonia transformation and microbial nitrogen removal were stimulated in coarse sediment regions of the river bends, and were confirmed by abundant differences of microbial taxa that could promote ammoxidation and denitrification. The coarse sediment benefits microbial nitrogen removal in urban river bends, a discovery that should inform urban river reconstruction designs and the efforts to assess the environmental water capacity of urban rivers.

Which type of pollutants need to be controlled with priority in wastewater treatment plants: Traditional or emerging pollutants?

Although wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can purify wastewater, they also discharge numerous contaminants into the environment through effluent discharge and sludge disposal. The occurrence, emission flux, and risk assessment of traditional pollutants (e.g., heavy metals [HMs]), and emerging pollutants (e.g., perfluoroalkyl substances [PFASs] and pharmaceutical and personal care products [PPCPs]) in WWTP emissions are of important concern. The present study analyzed 17 PFASs, 25 PPCPs, and 8 HMs in influent, effluent, and excess sludge from six WWTPs along the Yanghe River, North China. Samples were collected during four sampling campaigns from November 2016 to July 2017. The mean concentrations of PFASs and PPCPs in influent were 46.4 ng L^-1 and 6.57 μg L^-1, respectively; while those in effluent were 38.5 ng L^-1 and 2.14 μg L^-1, respectively. The highest concentrations of HMs was detected of Zn in influent (2,866 μg L^-1) and effluent (3,960 μg L^-1). According to the concentration composition, short-chain PFASs, fluoroquinolones (FQs), and Zn were the predominant components in both influents and effluents. The mean PFAS and PPCP concentrations in excess sludge were 5.95 ng g^-1 and 3.74 μg g^-1 dry weight (dw). Zn was the most abundant HMs in excess sludge with the concentration range of 156-14,271 μg g^-1 dw. The compositions of PFASs, PPCPs and HMs differed between wastewater and excess sludge. The estimated emission flux of these pollutants was ordered as HMs > PPCPs > PFASs through effluent discharge and sludge disposal. Sludge disposal discharged more PPCPs and HMs into the environment than effluent discharge, which was contrary for PFASs. Relative risk of each pollutant is calculated by comparing the mean effluent concentration with the median effective concentration. Algae and fish were selected as recipient organisms to calculate the relative risk of 23 selected pollutants towards aquatic organisms. The highest-risk pollutant was Zn on both algae and fish, while perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and atenolol (ATE) posed the lowest risk. In general, HMs (regarded as traditional pollutants) presented higher risks in effluent, followed by the emerging pollutants (PPCPs and PFASs). Therefore, control of traditional pollutants should be prioritized in WWTPs in this region. This study presents an overall assessment of the current status of traditional and emerging pollutants in WWTPs and provides useful information for upgrading wastewater treatment processes.
