Occurrence, fate and health risk assessment of 10 common antibiotics in two drinking water plants with different treatment processes

Distribution of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotic residues in drinking water production facilities: Links to bacterial community

There is a rapid spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment. However, the impact of antibiotic resistance in drinking water is relatively underexplored. Thus, this study aimed to quantify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic residues in two drinking water production facilities (NW-E and NW-C) in North West Province, South Africa and link these parameters to bacterial communities. Physicochemical and ARG levels were determined using standard procedures. Residues (antibiotics and fluconazole) and ARGs were quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) chemical analysis and real-time PCR, respectively. Bacterial community compositions were determined by high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. Data were analysed using redundancy analysis and pairwise correlation. Although some physicochemical levels were higher in treated than in raw water, drinking water in NW-E and NW-C was safe for human consumption using the South African Water Quality Guideline (SAWQG). ARGs were detected in raw and treated water. In NW-E, the concentrations of ARGs (sul1, intl1, EBC, FOX, ACC and DHA) were higher in treated water than in raw water. Regarding antimicrobial agents, antibiotic and fluconazole concentrations were higher in raw than in treated water. However, in NW-C, trimethoprim concentrations were higher in raw than in treated water. Redundancy analysis showed that bacterial communities were not significantly correlated (Monte Carlo simulations, p-value >0.05) with environmental factors. However, pairwise correlation showed significant differences (p-value <0.05) for Armatimonas, CL500-29 marine group, Clade III, Dickeya and Zymomonas genera with environmental factors. The presence of ARGs and antibiotic residues in the current study indicated that antibiotic resistance is not only a clinical phenomenon but also in environmental settings, particularly in drinking water niches. Consumption of NW-E and NW-C treated water may facilitate the spread of antibiotic resistance among consumers. Thus, regulating and monitoring ARGs and antibiotic residues in drinking water production facilities should be regarded as paramount.

Occurrence, fate, and risk assessment of antibiotics in conventional and advanced drinking water treatment systems: From source to tap

The occurrence and removal of 38 antibiotics from nine classes in two drinking water treatment plants (WTPs) were monitored monthly over one year to evaluate the efficiency of typical treatment processes, track the source of antibiotics in tap water and assess their potential risks to ecosystem and human health. In both source waters, 18 antibiotics were detected at least once, with average total antibiotic concentrations of 538.5 ng/L in WTP1 and 569.3 ng/L in WTP2. The coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation, sand filtration and granular activated carbon processes demonstrated limited removal efficiencies. Chlorination, on the other hand, effectively eliminated antibiotics by 48.7 ± 11.9%. Interestingly, negative removal was observed along the distribution system, resulting in a significant antibiotic presence in tap water, with average concentrations of 131.5 ng/L in WTP1 and 362.8 ng/L in WTP2. Source tracking analysis indicates that most antibiotics in tap water may originate from distribution system. The presence of antibiotics in raw water and tap water posed risks to the aquatic ecosystem. Untreated or partially treated raw water could pose a medium risk to infants under six months. Water parameters, for example, temperature, total nitrogen and total organic carbon, can serve as indicators to estimate antibiotic occurrence and associated risks. Furthermore, machine learning models were developed that successfully predicted risk levels using water quality parameters. Our study provides valuable insights into the occurrence, removal and risk of antibiotics in urban WTPs, contributing to the broader understanding of antibiotic pollution in water treatment systems.

Performance of public drinking water purifiers in control of trihalomethanes, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes

Point-of-use water purifiers are widely applied as a terminal treatment device to produce drinking water with high quality. However, concerns are raised regarding low efficiency in eliminating emerging organic pollutants. To enhance our understanding of the reliability and potential risks of water purifiers, the removal of trihalomethanes, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in four public water purifiers was investigated. In the four public water purifiers in October and November, the removal efficiencies of trichloromethane (TCM) and bromodichloromethane (BDCM) were 15%-69% (averagely 37%) and 6%-44% (averagely 23%). The levels of TCM and BDCM were lowered by all water purifiers in October and November, but accelerated in effluent compared to the influent in one public water purifier in December. The removal efficiencies of twelve antibiotics greatly varied with species and time. Out of twelve sampling cases, the removal efficiencies of total antibiotics were 25%-75% in ten cases. In the other two cases, very low removal efficiency (6%) or higher levels of antibiotics present in effluent compared to the influent were observed. Two public water purifiers effectively remove ARGs from water, with log removal rates of 0.45 log-3.89 log. However, in the other two public water purifiers, the ARG abundance accidently increased in the effluents. Overall, public water purifiers were more effective in removing antibiotics and ARGs compared to household water purifiers, but less or equally effective in removing trihalomethanes. Both public and household water purifiers could be contaminated and release the accumulated micro-pollutants or biofilm-related pollutants into effluent. The production frequency and standing time of water within water purifiers can impact the internal contamination and purification efficacy.

Pollution characteristics and health risk of sixty-five organics in one drinking water system: PAEs should be prioritized for control

Currently, a large number of emerging organic contaminants have been detected in domestic and international drinking water systems. However, there are differences among the research methods, which lead to system errors in directly comparing the hazards of different contaminants, so it is difficult to analyze the priority control pollutants and the risk control target in drinking water from previous studies. Therefore, we selected a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) in the east of China, and detected trihalomethanes (THMs), antibiotics, phthalate esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), a total of sixty-five organic contaminants in one batch water sample of four seasons, and carried out the whole process monitoring of "Source water-DWTP-Network-Users", and calculated the health risks of contaminants in tap water. The results showed that DWTP could effectively remove antibiotics and PAEs; the removal rate of coagulation for antibiotics can be up to 47%; the release of PAEs in the plastic water supply pipe leads to a significant increase of the concentrations in the water transportation system, which can reach 2.92 times of that in finished water; compared with other contaminants, THMs and PAEs in tap water have higher health risks. This study reveals that THMs and PAEs are priority control organic pollutants, and the water supply network is the key risk control target in the drinking water system, providing a theoretical basis for how to ensure the safety of drinking water.

Advanced technologies for the determination of quantitative structure-activity relationships and degradation efficiency of micropollutants and their removal in water - A review

The growing concentrations of micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems are a global water quality issue. Understanding micropollutants varied chemical composition and potency is essential to solving this complex issue. Micropollutants management requires identifying contaminants to reduce, optimal reduction targets, and the best wastewater recycling locations. Management requires appropriate technological measures. Pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, hormones, and other micropollutants can enter the aquatic environment from point and diffuse sources, with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) distributing them in urban areas. Micropollutants like pharmaceuticals and hormones may not be removed by conventional WWTPs. Micropollutants affect the EU, especially in densely populated areas where surface water is consumed. This review examines several technological options that can be integrated into existing treatment methods to address this issue. In this work, oxidation, activated carbon, and their combinations as potential solutions, considering their efficacy and cost were evaluated. This study illuminates micropollutants origin and physico-chemical properties, which affect distribution, persistence, and environmental impacts. Understanding these factors helps us develop targeted micropollutant mitigation strategies to protect water quality. This review can inform policy and decision-making to reduce micropollutant impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health.

Water, Water Everywhere, but Every Drop Unique: Challenges in the Science to Understand the Role of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Management of Drinking Water Supplies

The protection and management of water resources continues to be challenged by multiple and ongoing factors such as shifts in demographic, social, economic, and public health requirements. Physical limitations placed on access to potable supplies include natural and human-caused factors such as aquifer depletion, aging infrastructure, saltwater intrusion, floods, and drought. These factors, although varying in magnitude, spatial extent, and timing, can exacerbate the potential for contaminants of concern (CECs) to be present in sources of drinking water, infrastructure, premise plumbing and associated tap water. This monograph examines how current and emerging scientific efforts and technologies increase our understanding of the range of CECs and drinking water issues facing current and future populations. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but is instead a starting point for scientists wanting to learn more about the issues surrounding CECs. This text discusses the topical evolution CECs over time (Section 1), improvements in measuring chemical and microbial CECs, through both analysis of concentration and toxicity (Section 2) and modeling CEC exposure and fate (Section 3), forms of treatment effective at removing chemical and microbial CECs (Section 4), and potential for human health impacts from exposure to CECs (Section 5). The paper concludes with how changes to water quantity, both scarcity and surpluses, could affect water quality (Section 6). Taken together, these sections document the past 25 years of CEC research and the regulatory response to these contaminants, the current work to identify and monitor CECs and mitigate exposure, and the challenges facing the future.

Sonolytic degradation kinetics and mechanisms of antibiotics in water and cow milk

Antibiotics (ABX) residues frequently occurred in water and cow milk. This work aims to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of sonolytic degradation of four ABX, i.e. ceftiofur hydrochloride (CEF), sulfamonomethoxine sodium (SMM), marbofloxacin (MAR), and oxytetracycline (OTC) in water and milk. In both water and milk, the sonolytic degradation of ABX follows pseudo-first order (PFO) kinetics well (R2: 0.951-0.999), with significantly faster ABX degradation in water (PFO kinetics constants (k1): 1.5 × 10-3-1.2 × 10-1 min-1) than in milk (k1: 3.5 × 10-4-5.6 × 10-2 min-1). The k1 values for SMM degradation in water increased by 118% with ultrasonic frequency (40-120 kHz), 174% with ultrasonic frequency (80-500 kHz), 649% with ultrasonic power (73-259 W), 22% with bulk temperature (12-40℃), and by 68% with reaction volume (50-250 mL), respectively, in other things being equal. The relevant k1 values in milk increased by 326%, 231%, 122%, 10% as well as 82% with the above same effective factors, respectively. The oxidation by free radicals generated in situ dominates ABX degradation, and the hydrophobic CEF (54.0-971.7 nM min-1) and SMM (39.2-798.4 nM min-1) underwent faster degradation than the hydrophilic MAR (33.9-751.9 nM min-1) and OTC (33.8-545.3 nM min-1) in both water and milk. Adding an extra 0.5 mM H2O2 accelerated SMM degradation by 19% in water and 33% in milk. After 130-150 min sonication of 100 mL of 2.0 mg L-1 (6.62 μM) SMM in various milk with 500 kHz and 259 W, the residue concentrations (52.9-96.3 μg L-1) can meet the relevant maximum residue limit (100 μg L-1).

Understanding the cometabolic degradation of sulfadiazine by an enriched ammonia oxidizing bacteria culture from both extracellular and intracellular perspectives

Antibiotics are widely used drugs in the world and pose serious threats to ecosystems and human health. Although it has been reported that ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) can cometabolize antibiotics, little has been reported on how AOB would respond to the exposure of antibiotics on extracellular and enzymatic levels, as well as the impact of antibiotics on the bioactivity of AOB. Therefore, in this study, a typical antibiotic, sulfadiazine (SDZ), was selected, and a series short-term batch tests using enriched AOB sludge were conducted to investigate the intracellular and extracellular responses of AOB along the cometabolic degradation process of SDZ. The results showed the cometabolic degradation of AOB made the main contribution to SDZ removal. When the enriched AOB sludge was exposed to SDZ, ammonium oxidation rate, ammonia monooxygenase activity, adenosine triphosphate concentration and dehydrogenases activity were negatively affected. The amoA gene abundance increased 1.5 folds within 24 h, which may enhance the uptake and utilization of substrates and maintain stable metabolic activity. In the tests with and without ammonium, the concentration of total EPS increased from 264.9 to 231.1 mg/gVSS to 607.7 and 538.2 mg/gVSS, respectively, under the exposure to SDZ, which was mainly contributed by the increase of proteins in tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and polysacharides in tightly bound EPS and soluble microbial products. The proportion of tryptophan-like protein and humic acid-like organics in EPS also increased. Moreover, SDZ stress stimulated the secretion of three quorum sensing signal molecules, C4-HSL (from 140.3 to 164.9 ng/L), 3OC6-HSL (from 17.8 to 42.4 ng/L) and C8-HSL (from 35.8 to 95.9 ng/L) in the enriched AOB sludge. Among them, C8-HSL may be a key signal molecule that promoted the secretion of EPS. The findings of this study could shed more light on the cometabolic degradation of antibiotics by AOB.

Antibiotic residues of drinking-water and its human exposure risk assessment in rural Eastern China

Trace levels of antibiotics were frequently found in drinking-water, leading a growing concern that drinking-water is an important exposure source to antibiotics in humans. In this study, we investigated antibiotics in tap water and well water in two rural residential areas in Eastern China to assess the related human health exposure risks in drinking-water. Twenty-seven antibiotics were analyzed using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The average daily dose (ADD) and the health risk quotient (HRQ) for exposure to antibiotics in humans were evaluated using 10000 times of Monte Carlo simulations. Ten antibiotics were detected in drinking-water samples, with the maximum concentrations of antibiotic mixture of 8.29 ng/L in tap water and 2.95 ng/L in well water, respectively. Macrolides and sulfonamides were the predominant contaminants and showed the seasonality. Azithromycin had the highest detection frequencies (79.71-100%), followed by roxithromycin (25.71-100%) and erythromycin (21.43-86.96%). The estimated ADD and HRQ for human exposure to antibiotic mixture through drinking-water was less than 0.01 μg/kg/day and 0.01, respectively, which varied over sites, water types, seasons and sex. Ingestion route was more important than dermal contact route (10-6 to 10-4 μg/kg/day magnitude vs. 10-11 to 10-8 μg/kg/day magnitude). Macrolides also contributed mainly to health exposure risks to antibiotics through drinking-water, whose HRQ accounted for 46% to 67% of the total HRQs. Although the individual antibiotic and their combined effects contributed to acceptable health risks for human, the long-term exposure patterns to low-dose antibiotics in drinking-water should not be ignored.

Occurrence and fate of antibiotics in swine waste treatment: An industrial case

This study mapped the fate of antibiotics in a swine farm with integrated waste treatment including anoxic stabilization, fixed-film anaerobic digestion, anoxic-oxic (A/O), and composting. Results show the prevalent and consistent occurrence of 12 antibiotics in swine waste. Mass balance of these antibiotics was calculated to track their flow and evaluate their removal by different treatment units. The integrated treatment train could effectively reduce antibiotic loading to the environment by 90% (measured as combined mass of all antibiotic residues). Within the treatment train, anoxic stabilization as the initial treatment step, accounted for the highest contribution (43%) to overall antibiotic elimination. Results also show that aerobic was more effective than anaerobic regarding antibiotic degradation. Composting accounted for an additional of 31% removal of antibiotics while anaerobic digestion contributed to 15%. After treatment, antibiotic residues in the treated effluent and composted materials were 2 and 8% of the initial antibiotic loading in raw swine waste, respectively. Ecological risk assessment showed negligible or low risk quotient associated with most individual antibiotics released into the aquatic environment or soil from swine farming. Nevertheless, antibiotic residues in treated water and composted materials together showed significant ecological risk to water and soil organisms. Thus, further work to improve treatment performance or develop new technologies is necessary to reduce the impact of antibiotics from swine farming.

Photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole using TiO2-based materials - Perspectives for the development of a sustainable water treatment technology

Heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide-based materials is considered a promising and innovative solution to the water pollution problem. However, due to the limitations concerning the use of the developed materials and the applied photodegradation conditions, the research on photoremediation using TiO₂ often stays behind the lab door. The challenge is to convert the basic research into a successful innovation, leading to the implementation of this process into wastewater treatment. For this purpose, the most active materials and optimal photodegradation conditions must be chosen. This article collects and compares the studies on photocatalytic degradation of an emerging pollutant - sulfamethoxazole, an antibacterial drug - and attempts to find the best approaches to be successfully applied on an industrial scale. Various types of TiO₂-based photocatalysts are compared, including different nanoforms, doped or polymer-based composites, composites with graphene, activated carbon, dyes or natural compounds, as well as possible supporting materials for TiO₂. The paper covers the impact of the irradiation source (natural sunlight, LED, mercury or xenon lamps) and water matrix on the photodegradation process, considering the ecological and economic sustainability of the process. Emphasis is put on the stability, ease of separation and reuse of the photocatalyst, power and safety of the irradiation source, identification of photodegradation intermediates and toxicity assays. The main approaches are critically discussed, main challenges and perspectives for an effective photocatalytic water treatment technology are pointed out.

Antibiotic Pollution of Planktonic Ecosystems: A Review Focused on Community Analysis and the Causal Chain Linking Individual- and Community-Level Responses

Antibiotic pollution has become one of the most challenging environmental issues in aquatic ecosystems, with adverse effects on planktonic organisms that occupy the base of the aquatic food chain. However, research regarding this topic has not been systematically reviewed, especially in terms of community-level responses. In this review, we provide an overview of current antibiotic pollution in aquatic environments worldwide. Then, we summarize recent studies concerning the responses of planktonic communities to antibiotics, ranging from individual- to community-level responses. Studies have shown that extremely high concentrations of antibiotics can directly harm the growth and survival of plankton; however, such concentrations are rarely found in natural freshwater. It is more likely that environmentally relevant concentrations of antibiotics will affect the physiological, morphological, and behavioral characteristics of planktonic organisms; influence interspecific interactions among plankton species via asymmetrical responses in species traits; and thus alter the structure and function of the entire planktonic ecosystem. This review highlights the importance of community analysis in revealing antibiotic toxicity. We also encourage the establishment of the causal relationships between impacts at multiple scales in the future for predicting the community-level consequences of antibiotics based on the currently available individual-level evidence.

An exhaustive investigation on antibiotics contamination from livestock farms within sensitive reservoir water area: Spatial density, source apportionment and risk assessment

Although the studies on antibiotic contamination are common at present, large-scale sampling studies drawing highly representative conclusions are still scarce. This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on a total of 1183 samples from 70 livestock farms within a sensitive area around reservoir waters. 45 types of antibiotics belonging to 5 different classes were monitored. This is the first analysis to comprehensively investigate the density distribution, source apportionment, ecological and health risk of antibiotics in an entire area of sensitive waters. The results showed that the layer manure samples had highest detection rate of antibiotics (0.0 %-96.1 %, average value = 30.7 %) followed by pig manure samples. Oxytetracycline had the highest concentration of 712.16 mg/kg in a pig manure sample. Different from using antibiotic concentration as a proxy for pollution level, the spatial density was calculated by averaging antibiotic concentration to area and converting different livestock to pig equivalent. The spatial density of pig equivalent can more realistically reflect the pollution caused by different breeds of livestocks. It was shown that the pig farms contributed higher to total antibiotic density than the layer and cattle farms did. After assessed, a few antibiotics (oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline and tetracycline) have posed high ecological risks to soil around the farms. However, none of them caused hazard quotient (HQ) risk and carcinogenic risk (CR) to human health in the water of reservoir. Children were more likely to be at hazard risk than adults. Antibiotic mass fluctuation rules were analyzed along the chain (feed → livestock waste → soil → surface water). Feed, livestock waste and soil had similar diversity, but the antibiotic concentrations continued to decline, implying the possible sources of antibiotic residues were similar. Thus, it is important to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use to prevent the potential long-term risk of antibiotics.

Effects of ciprofloxacin on Eichhornia crassipes phytoremediation performance and physiology under hydroponic conditions

Antibiotics can be absorbed by aquatic plants, but they seriously affect the health of aquatic plants and threaten the steady state of aquatic ecosystem. The phytoremediation performance and physiology of floating macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) under antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) hydroponic conditions were investigated. It was found that CIP absorption of E. crassipes was up to 84.38% and the root was the main absorption tissue. Hydrolysis and microbial degradation were the second removal pathway of CIP followed the plant absorption. After 7 days of CIP exposure, the photosynthesis efficiency of E. crassipes remained stable, and the presence of CIP did not inhibit the growth of the plant. On the 14th day, the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were increased in response to the CIP stress. However, the tender leaves of E. crassipes turned white and shrivel, attributed to a decrease in chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters after 21 days of CIP exposure. These findings will have significant implications for E. crassipes to absorb CIP on a limited time-scale and provide a phytoremediation technology for antibiotics in water.

Field study on loss of tetracycline antibiotics from manure-applied soil and their risk assessment in regional water environment of Guangzhou, China

Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) introduced into agricultural fields via manure application tend to accumulate in soils and further reach water environments via surface runoff and leachate, posing potential risks to regional water environment. This study investigated the loss of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC) in surface runoff and leachate samples collected from a vegetable farmland with manure application in Guangzhou, South China. A risk assessment method was constructed for evaluating the ecological and health risks of manure-associated antibiotics released from soil into water environment. The results showed that the concentrations of three TCs in surface runoff, 30-cm leachate, and 60-cm leachate after the first rainfall event were 2.79-35.97, 1.71-18.44, and 0.4-2.66 μg/L, respectively, which all decreased with sampling depth and the time after rainfall events. Up to 0.13% of TCs were transported into the surface water through surface runoff, while less than 0.01% of TCs were transported into the groundwater through leachate at 60 cm. OTC had a higher total mass percentage (0.13%) into surface water via runoff than CTC (0.11%) and TC (0.07%) likely due to its smallest K_d value and largest input mass. Based on loss percentages, their predicted environmental concentrations (PEC) ranged from 4.87 (TC) to 16.91 (OTC) ng/L in regional surface water and 1.42 (TC) to 5.20 (CTC) ng/L in regional groundwater. The risk assessment based on PEC results suggested non-negligible health risk (HQ > 1.0 × 10^-6) and low ecological risk (RQ < 0.1) in both regional surface water and groundwater, drawing concerns on the potential hazards of TCs released from manure-amended soil into water environments.

Enhanced photodegradation of antibiotics based on anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria and bacterial metabolites: A sustainably green strategy for the removal of high-risk organics from secondary effluent

Antibiotic residues in effluents discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been considered high-risk organics due to biorefractory property and potential toxicity. Secondary pollution and unsustainability existed in advanced treatment of secondary effluent are currently in urgent need of improvement. In this study, a sustainably green strategy based on Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R.palustris) by regulating the structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was proposed for the first time to achieve efficiently removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). Results showed that 0.2 V was the optimal external potential for R.palustris to efficiently remove SDZ, where the biodegradation rate constant obtained at this potential was 4.87-folds higher than that in open-circuit mode and a complete removal was achieved within 58 h in the presence of EPS extracted at this potential. Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra analysis suggested that tryptophan protein-like, tyrosine protein-like, humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like substances present in EPS were the main effective components which was responsible for the indirect photodegradation of SDZ. The quenching experiments showed that ³EPS* was the dominant reactive species which accounted for 90% of SDZ removal. This study provides new implications for the advanced treatment of secondary effluent organic matters by developing eco-friendly bioaugmentation technology and biomaterials.

Migration, Transformation and Removal of Macrolide Antibiotics in The Environment: A Review

Macrolide antibiotics (MAs), as a typical emerging pollutant, are widely detected in environmental media. When entering the environment, MAs can interfere with the growth, development and reproduction of organisms, which has attracted extensive attention. However, there are few reviews on the occurrence characteristics, migration and transformation law, ecotoxicity and related removal technologies of MAs in the environment. In this work, combined with the existing relevant research, the migration and transformation law and ecotoxicity characteristics of MAs in the environment are summarized, and the removal mechanism of MAs is clarified. Currently, most studies on MAs are based on laboratory simulation experiments, and there are few studies on the migration and transformation mechanism between multiphase states. In addition, the cost of MAs removal technology is not satisfactory. Therefore, the following suggestions are put forward for the future research direction. The migration and transformation process of MAs between multiphase states (such as soil-water-sediment) should be focused on. Apart from exploring the new treatment technology of MAs, the upgrading and coupling of existing MAs removal technologies to meet emission standards and reduce costs should also be concerned. This review provides some theoretical basis and data support for understanding the occurrence characteristics, ecotoxicity and removal mechanism of MAs.

The Chemical Relationship Among Beta-Lactam Antibiotics and Potential Impacts on Reactivity and Decomposition

Beta-lactam antibiotics remain one of the most commonly prescribed drug classes, but they are limited by their propensity to cause hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., from allergy to anaphylaxis) as well as by the emergence of bacteria with a myriad of resistance mechanisms such as β-lactamases. While development efforts continue to focus on overcoming resistance, there are ongoing concerns regarding cross-contamination of β-lactams during manufacturing and compounding of these drugs. Additionally, there is a need to reduce levels of drugs such as β-lactam antibiotics in waste-water to mitigate the risk of environmental exposure. To help address future development of effective remediation chemistries and processes, it is desired to better understand the structural relationship among the most common β-lactams. This study includes the creation of a class-wide structural ordering of the entire β-lactam series, including both United States Food and Drug Association (US-FDA)-approved drugs and experimental therapies. The result is a structural relational map: the “Lactamome,” which positions each substance according to architecture and chemical end-group. We utilized a novel method to compare the structural relationships of β-lactam antibiotics among the radial cladogram and describe the positioning with respect to efficacy, resistance to hydrolysis, reported hypersensitivity, and Woodward height. The resulting classification scheme may help with the development of broad-spectrum treatments that reduce the risk of occupational exposure and negative environmental impacts, assist practitioners with avoiding adverse patient reactions, and help direct future drug research.

Suspect, non-target and target screening of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in a drinking water system

Drinking water quality and safety are very important in protecting human health. Chemical contaminants in drinking water system have become an increasing concern. Our knowledge about what chemicals are present in drinking water is still limited. Here we screened chemicals of emerging concern in a conventional drinking water system based on suspect, non-target screening and target analysis, and assessed their variations in different seasons and different treatment units. Overall, 720 chemicals were identified with HRMS databases from the suspect and non-target screening and 48 chemicals in five categories were further confirmed with the high confidence level, with predominance of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides. Four compounds are newly found in aquatic environment with no literature or chemical occurrence data record. Temporal variations and variable removals were observed for these chemicals in the system. Target analysis of 110 PPCPs showed detection of 21, 19 and 22 compounds in the drinking water treatment plant with a concentration range of 0.11-844 ng/L in the three seasons, but only 8, 9 and 15 compounds detected in tap water (0.16-32.5 ng/L). The variations of the detected chemicals were less obvious in tap water, with most having concentrations below 2 ng/L. The results indicated efficient removal for most PPCPs in the drinking water system. The findings from this study demonstrated the strong capability of combined non-target screening and target analysis in identifying and assessing various organic chemicals in drinking water system.

Pharmaceuticals in drinking water sources and tap water in a city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River: occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and risk assessment

The occurrence of ten target pharmaceuticals was investigated in drinking water sources and tap water in a city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, including erythromycin (ERY), roxithromycin (RTM), ciprofloxacin (CPX), ofloxacin (OFX), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), ibuprofen (IBF), and naproxen (NPX). And the corresponding ecological risk for three classes of aquatic organisms and human health risk for different life stages were estimated. Results demonstrated that nine pharmaceuticals except for TC were detected with the frequencies of 20-100% and the concentrations of <LOQ-118.60 ng/L in drinking water sources. Only SMX and IBF were detected quantitatively with the highest concentrations of 0.69 ng/L and 1.28 ng/L in tap water, respectively. The concentrations of the target pharmaceuticals were lower than or comparable with those in other drinking water systems. The spatiotemporal variations of the target pharmaceuticals might be mainly attributed to their usage object, emission amount, and natural attenuation. The overall discrepancy of concentrations between drinking water sources and tap water might indicate the purification effect of drinking water treatment system. Individual pharmaceutical in drinking water resources posed negligible risks to invertebrate and fish; however, ERY, CPX, OFX, and SMX posed high risk to algae. Moreover, pharmaceutical exposure by tap water caused no risk to human health. Nevertheless, the long-term, chronic, and mixed risks of pharmaceuticals and the potential risk of antibiotic-resistant genes should be concerned. This study enriches environmental monitoring data of pharmaceuticals in drinking water sources and tap water, and provides scientific information for emerging pollutants management in drinking water system.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in WWTP effluent-receiving water bodies and reclaimed wastewater treatment plants

There is a growing concern on the fate and the consequent ecological or health risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural or artificial water environment. The effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been reported to be an important source of antibiotics and ARGs in the environment. WWTP effluent could be discharged into surface water bodies or recycled, either of which could lead to different exposure risks. The impact of WWTP effluents on the levels of antibiotics and ARGs in effluent-receiving water bodies and the removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs in reclaimed wastewater treatment plants (RWTPs) were seldom simultaneously investigated. Thus, in this study, we investigated the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in four WWTP effluents, and their downstream effluent-receiving water bodies and RWTPs in seasons of low-water-level. The total concentrations of ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, roxithromycin, azithromycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole in the secondary effluents were 1441.6-4917.6 ng L^-1. Ofloxacin had the highest concentration. The absolute and relative abundances of total ARGs (qnrD, qnrS, ermA, ermB, tetA, tetQ, sul1, and sul2) in the secondary effluents were 10³-10⁴ copies mL^-1 and 10^-4-10^-2 ARG/16S rRNA. Sul1 and sul2 were the major species with the highest detection frequencies and levels. In most cases, WWTP effluents were not the major contributors to the levels and species of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water bodies. Four RWTPs removed 43.5-98.9% of antibiotics and - 0.19-2.91 log of ARGs. Antibiotics and ARGs increased in chlorination, ozonation and filtration units. Antibiotics had significantly positive correlations with ARGs, biological oxygen demands, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen in the four effluent-receiving water bodies. In RWTPs, the total concentrations of antibiotics showed a significant positive correlation with the total abundance of ARGs.

A review on non-thermal plasma treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics

Large amounts of antibiotics are produced and consumed worldwide, while wastewater treatment is still rather inefficient, leading to considerable water contamination. Concentrations of antibiotics in the environment are often sufficiently high to exert a selective pressure on bacteria of clinical importance that increases the prevalence of resistance. Since the drastic reduction in the use of antibiotics is not envisaged, efforts to reduce their input into the environment by improving treatment of contaminated wastewater is essential to limit uncontrollable spread of antibiotic resistance. This paper reviews recent progress on the use of non-thermal plasma for the degradation of antibiotics in water. The target compounds removal, the energy efficiency and the mineralization are analyzed as a function of discharge configuration and the most important experimental parameters. Various ways to improve the plasma process efficiency are addressed. Based on the identified reaction intermediates, degradation pathways are proposed for various classes of antibiotics and the degradation mechanisms of these chemicals under plasma conditions are discussed.

Efficient removal of tetracycline by a hierarchically porous ZIF-8 metal organic framework

Most reported metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have microporous structures and defective active sites, limiting their practical application to macromolecular substances. A hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was prepared using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as a structure-directing agent under facile "aqueous room-temperature" conditions to increase the mass transfer and adsorption capacity tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The ZIF-8 pore structure and morphology were synchronously tuned by controlling the PDDA molecular weight and dosage. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Bruner-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), NH₃-temperature-programmed desorption (NH₃-TPD) and adsorption results revealed abundant pore structures and open metal sites in the prepared materials, along with excellent TCH adsorption performance compared with ZIF-8, despite decreased BET surface areas. Initial screens revealed large adsorption capacities of hierarchical porous ZIF-8P3(4) (976.8 mg g^-1) due to the presence of more abundant unsaturated metal sites than ZIF-8 and novel hierarchical porous structures. Therefore, TCH adsorption on ZIF-8 and ZIF-8P3(4), including the kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and pH effect, was studied. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich models better, indicating multilayer adsorption of TCH on the surface of the two absorbents. Adsorption behavior test, FTIR, XPS, BET and XRD results show that TCH adsorption on ZIF-8 and ZIF-8P3(4) most likely involves coordination bonds, electrostatic and π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pore-filling effects. This study provides new insights into the template preparation of MOFs with high adsorption performance as potentially economical adsorbents to remove organic matter from contaminated water.

Effects of natural colloidal particles derived from a shallow lake on the photodegradation of ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin

Natural colloidal particles (NCPs), which are ubiquitous and abundant in surface waters, may play a crucial role in the sunlight-driven transformation of organic contaminants. This research focused on the effects of NCPs on the photodegradation of two fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs), ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), and assessed the photosensitivity of colloidal organic matter (COM). Results showed that the photodegradation rate constants (k_obs) of OFL and CIP in NCP solutions ranged from 9.28 × 10^-2 h^-1 to 15.98 × 10^-2 h^-1 and 63.88 × 10^-2 h^-1 to 196.59 × 10^-2 h^-1, respectively, and NCPs can significantly accelerate the photodegradation rate of OFL and CIP. Indirect photodegradation (IP) accounted for >50% of the overall observed degradation in most treatments and was the dominant degradation pathway for the two FQs, especially for CIP, for which IP reached 82%-94%. In the IP process, the contributions of triplet states of colloidal organic matter (³COM^⁎) to the photolysis of OFL and CIP were close to 42% and 46%, respectively. The compositions of COM played an important role in the IP of the FQs, among which terrestrial sources of COM tended to have higher photoreactivity than biological sources. This study is essential in predicting the photochemical effect of FQs and also allows for a better understanding of the real environmental fate of antibiotic contaminants.

Response of anammox granules to the simultaneous exposure to macrolide and aminoglycoside antibiotics: Linking performance to mechanism

Antibiotic pollution is becoming increasingly severe due to its extensive use. The potential application of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process in the treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics has attracted much attention. As common antibiotics, spiramycin (SPM) and streptomycin (STM) are widely used to treat human and animal diseases. However, their combined effects on the anammox process remain unknown. Therefore, this study systematically evaluated the response of the anammox process to both antibiotics. The half maximal inhibitory concentrations of SPM and STM were determined. The continuous-flow anammox system could adapt to SPM and STM at low concentrations, while antibiotics at high concentrations exhibited inhibitory effects. When the concentrations reached 5 mg L^-1 SPM and 50 mg L^-1 STM, the nitrogen removal efficiency dramatically decreased and then rapidly recovered within 8 days. Correspondingly, the abundances of dominant bacteria and genes also changed with antibiotic concentrations. In general, the anammox process showed a stable performance and a high resistance to SPM and STM, suggesting that acclimatization by elevating the concentrations was beneficial for the anammox process to obtain resistance to different antibiotics with high concentrations. This study provides guidance for the stable operation of anammox-based biological treatment of antibiotics containing wastewater.

Distribution, abundance, and risk assessment of selected antibiotics in a shallow freshwater body used for drinking water, China

With rapid improvements in industrialization and urbanization, antibiotics are now extensively used to prevent and treat human and animal diseases and husbandry and aquaculture. Some research has been conducted to assess the environmental distribution and risk level of antibiotics, but their distribution remains largely uncharacterized. Thus, this study investigated the distribution and abundance of 39 antibiotics belonging to five groups, and their associated risks in surface water around Luoma Lake in the north of Jiangsu province, China. Nineteen antibiotics were detected, at a detection frequency (DF) ranging from 2.27% to 100%. The total antibiotics (ΣABs) concentrations ranged from 34.91 to 825.93 ng/L, with a median concentration of 195.45 ng/L. Among these antibiotics, chlortetracycline (DF: 100%; median: 172.02 ng/L) was the dominant antibiotic, accounting for a median percentage of 91.0% of ΣABs concentrations. Spearman rank correlation method found a significant correlation between clindamycin (DF: 72.7%; median: 2.01 ng/L) and lincomycin (DF: 79.5%; median: 4.58 ng/L). The ecological risk quotient (RQ) values for two out of 44 sampling sites were higher than 1, indicating a high risk; 11.4% of the RQ values fell between 0.1 and 1, indicating a medium risk. Moreover, roxithromycin was found to be the dominant contributor to the ecological risk, accounting for a median of 79.7% of ΣABs. However, the total non-carcinogenic (<6.54 × 10^-4) and carcinogenic risks (<1.64 × 10^-7) of ΣABs were negligible at the detected concentrations.

Occurrence of antibiotics in rural drinking water and related human health risk assessment

Antibiotic residues in drinking water can have a negative impact on both human and environmental health. However, drinking water purification processes employed in rural areas are often less complicated than those used in urban areas. The occurrence of antibiotic residues in rural drinking water and their potential effects on residents' health remains to be established. In this study, we measured antibiotic levels in rural drinking water using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), and evaluated the associated health risks based on Chinese population exposure parameters. Twenty-three antibiotics were detected in drinking water samples, of which fluoroquinolones and macrolides were the most common. The type and concentration of antibiotics in drinking water were affected both by the quality of the water source and by the water purification process used. The health risks associated with antibiotics in drinking water were within acceptable levels and likely to have little impact on human health. Of the antibiotics detected, salinomycin presented the greatest risk to human health. These findings can help to play a role in devising strategies to ensure drinking water safety.

Specific microbial diversity and functional gene (AOB amoA) analysis of a sponge-based aerobic nitrifying moving bed biofilm reactor exposed to typical pharmaceuticals

Four bench-scale sponge-based aerobic nitrifying moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) were used to treat municipal wastewater containing typical pharmaceuticals (1 mg/L, 2 mg/L and 5 mg/L). This preliminary research aims to investigate the effects of sulfadiazine (SDZ), ibuprofen (IBU) and carbamazepine (CBZ) on nitrification performance and explore specific microbial diversity and functional gene (Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), amoA) of MBBRs. After 90 days of operation, the MBBR without pharmaceuticals could remove up to 97.4 ± 1.5% of NH₄⁺-N while the removals of NH₄⁺-N by the MBBRs with SDZ, IBU and CBZ were all suppressed to varying degrees. Based on the Shannon and Chao 1 index, the specific microbial diversity and richness in biofilm samples increased at a range of 1 mg/L to 2 mg/L pharmaceuticals (SDZ, IBU or CBZ) and started decreasing after the pharmaceutical concentration was higher than 2 mg/L. The determination of functional gene (AOB amoA) showed that Proteobacteria was the most dominant bacteria within all biofilms with the relative abundance ranging from 24.81% to 55.32%. Furthermore, Nitrosomonas was the most numerous genus in AOB, followed by Campylobacter and Thauera, whose relative abundance shifted under the pressure of different pharmaceuticals.

Efficient catalytic ozonation of diclofenac by three-dimensional iron (Fe)-doped SBA-16 mesoporous structures

The removal of diclofenac (DCF) that causes risks to the environment and human health remains a great challenge due to the inefficiency of conventional physical methods. In this work, an efficient catalytic ozonation of DCF is achieved from a novel iron-doped SBA-16 (Fe-SBA-16) three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous structure. The Fe-SBA-16/ozonation (O₃) system exhibits enhanced catalytic activity towards DCF mineralization (up to 79.3% in 1.5 h), which is 1.2 times of its counterpart, Fe-MCM-41, and 2.4 times of the sole ozonation without catalysts. The unique 3D mesoporous structures accelerate the mass transfer and meanwhile result in higher ozone utilization efficiency for more effective generation of active species, hence enhancing the DCF mineralization efficiency. We believe the well-defined Fe-SBA-16 catalyst coupled with their enhanced catalytic ozonation performances will provide new insights into the construction of mesoporous structured materials to eliminate hazards in aqueous solutions for the environment remediation.

Fate of environmental pollutants: A review

A review of the literature published in 2019 on topics associated with the fate of environmental pollutants is presented. Environmental pollutants covered include pharmaceuticals, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes, pesticides and veterinary medicines, personal care products and emerging pollutants, PFAS, microplastics, nanomaterials, heavy metals and radionuclides, nutrients, pathogens and indicator organisms, and oil and hydrocarbons. For each pollutant, the occurrence in the environment and/or their fate in engineered as well as natural systems in matrices including water, soil, wastewater, stormwater, runoff, and/or manure is presented based on the published literature. The review includes current developments in understanding pollutants in natural and engineered systems, and relevant physico-chemical processes, as well as biological processes.

Detection, occurrence, and fate of emerging contaminants in agricultural environments (2020)

A review of 79 papers published in 2019 is presented. The topics ranged from detailed descriptions of analytical methods, to fate and occurrence studies, to ecological effects and sampling techniques for a wide variety of emerging contaminants likely to occur in agricultural environments. New methods and studies on veterinary pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, anthelmintics, and engineered nanomaterials in agricultural environments continue to expand our knowledge base on the occurrence and potential impacts of these compounds. This review is divided into the following sections: Introduction, Analytical Methods, Antibiotics in Agroecosystems, Pharmaceutical Fate and Occurrence, Anthelmintics and Engineered Nanomaterials. PRACTITIONER POINTS: New research describes innovative new techniques for emerging contaminant detection in agricultural settings Newer classes of contaminants include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals Research in nanomaterials show that these also occur in agricultural environments and will likely be topics of future work.

MBR-UV/Cl2 system in treating polluted surface water with typical PPCP contamination

This study proposed the membrane bioreactor–ultraviolet/chlorine (MBR-UV/Cl₂) process for treating polluted surface water with pharmaceutical personal care product (PPCP) contamination. Results showed that MBR-UV/Cl₂ effectively removed the organic matters and ammonia at approximately 80% and 95%. MBR-UV/Cl₂ was used in the removal of sulfadiazine(SDZ), sulfamethoxazole(SMZ), tetracycline(TC), oxytetracycline(OTC), ciprofloxacin(CIP), ofloxacin(OFX), erythromycin(ERY), roxithromycin(ROX), ibuprofen(IBU) and, naproxen(NAX) at 12.18%, 95.61%, 50.50%, 52.97%, 33.56%, 47.71%, 87.57%, 93.38%, 93.80%, and 71.46% in which their UV/Cl₂ contribution was 12.18%, 95.61%, 29.04%, 38.14%, 25.94%, 7.20%, 80.28%, 33.79%, 73.08%, and 23.05%, respectively. The removal of 10 typical PPCPs using UV/Cl₂ obtained higher contributions than those of the MBR process, except OTC, ROX, and IBU. The UV/Cl₂ process with 3-min hydraulic retention time and chlorine concentration at 3 mg/L effectively removed the trace of PPCPs. MBR-UV/Cl₂ has the potential to be developed as an effective technology in treating polluted surface water with PPCP contamination.

Efficient electrochemical generation of ferrate(VI) by iron coil anode imposed with square alternating current and treatment of antibiotics

Anode passivation is still a main challenge for the electrochemical generation of ferrate(VI, Fe(VI)), leading to the reduction of Fe(VI) production efficiency. In this study, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electronic microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to select better anode electrode configurations (iron wire, iron gauze, and iron coil). The results indicate that iron coil had the least degree of passivation. Different imposed current waveforms during the electrochemical generation of Fe(VI) were also investigated, and the iron coil imposed with square alternating current (AC) wave can mitigate the anode passivation, resulting in higher Fe(VI) production efficiency. The optimum conditions for the electrochemical generation of Fe(VI) were evaluated and the optimum temperature (40 ℃), current density (10 mA/cm²), AC cycle period (15 s) and electrolyte concentrations (14 M NaOH) were identified. As a result, 0.12 mol/L Fe(VI) concentration and over 50% of current efficiency can be achieved after 3 h electrolysis. The generated Fe(VI) solution was further applied to oxidize doxycycline(DOX) and sulfadiazine(SDZ) as typical antibiotics. Over 80% of DOX can be removed at a Fe(VI) to DOX molar ratio of 5:1 (pH = 4-9), whilst a higher Fe(VI) to SDZ molar ratio of 20:1 (pH = 7) was needed to obtain 75% SDZ removal.

Antibiotics in wastewater from multiple sources and surface water of the Yangtze River in Chongqing in China

Antibiotic contamination attracts growing concerns because of their deleterious effects on the ecosystem and human health. In this study, 43 antibiotics in wastewater from a variety of sources and water of the Yangtze River in Chongqing City in western China were measured. Thirty compounds were detected, and their concentrations were highest in leachates from the municipal solid waste treatment facilities (landfills and incineration plants) with total concentrations of 3584-57,106 ng/L. The total concentrations in influents of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were comparable (401-7994 ng/L versus 640-8945 ng/L). The concentrations in raw sewage from swine farms (with a total of 10,219-39,195 ng/L) and poultry farms (1419-36,027 ng/L) were noticeably higher than those from other farms (54.0-5516 ng/L). Fluoroquinolones were the dominant antibiotics contributing over 50% in all the sources, and sulfonamides and imidazole fungicides contributed 3.2-34%, whereas tetracyclines and macrolides had minor contributions. The overall antibiotic removal rates were highest in solid waste treatment facilities (88% on average), comparable between municipal and industrial WWTPs (61%), and lowest in animal farms (39%). The mass loads to the investigated municipal WWTPs via influent wastewater ranged from 7.80 to 1531 kg/year (53.2-2482 μg/day per capital). The influent mass loads to the industrial WWTPs and farms were 3.7-50 kg/year and 0.9-5437 g/year, respectively. We estimated that the mass inventories of antibiotics from these sources to the environment via effluent discharges were approximately 2044 kg for municipal WWTPs, 61 kg for industrial WWTPs, and 34 kg for animal farms in the whole city. Antibiotic concentrations in the Yangtze River water were substantially low (< 492 ng/L, with a mean of 57.8 ng/L) suggesting dissipation during the movement.

Human health risk assessment of antibiotics in binary mixtures for finished drinking water

The present study developed a new step-wise approach to estimate the potential human health risk of antibiotics in binary mixture for drinking water samples for two different sub-populations. Monte Carlo simulation based uncertainty analysis was performed to reduce uncertainty in risk assessment. Human health risk assessment studies were carried out using the acceptable daily intake (ADIs) for exposures of individual antibiotics considering point of departure (POD) and uncertainty factors (UFs). The estimated ADI values were used to estimate the predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs), at or below which no adverse human health effects are anticipated. Hazard quotient (HQ) in risk assessment was calculated as a ratio of environmental concentrations (ECs) and PNECs (EC/PNEC). The study showed that the average HQs values of individual antibiotics in adult and children were found below the acceptable limit, demonstrating no possible human health risk for both the subgroups. HI_interaction values of antibiotics in binary mixture was calculated using HQ values of antibiotics. The study observed that the estimated HI_interaction values of antibiotics in binary mixture was found to be less than 1 for both the sub populations, indicating no potential adverse effects on human health. Concentration of antibiotics was the primary contributor (>65%) to the overall variance in the uncertainty estimates for HQs of individual antibiotics in drinking water for adult and children. The co-occurrence of antibiotics in binary mixture for drinking water samples doesn't possess any possible risk on human health for the studied population.

An investigation of changes in water quality throughout the drinking water production/distribution chain using toxicological and fluorescence analyses

Changes in water quality from source water to finished water and tap water at two conventional drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) were monitored. Beside the routine water quality testing, Caenorhabditis elegans-based toxicity assays and the fluorescence excitation-emission matrices technique were also applied. Both DWTPs supplied drinking water that met government standards. Under current test conditions, both the investigated finished water and tap water samples exhibited stronger lethal, genotoxic and reprotoxic potential than the relative source water sample, and the tap water sample was more lethal but tended to be less genotoxic than the corresponding finished water sample. Meanwhile, the nearly complete removal of tryptophan-like substances and newly generated tyrosine-like substances were observed after the treatment of drinking water, and humic-like substances were identified in the tap water. Based on these findings, toxic pollutants, including genotoxic/reproductive toxicants, are produced in the drinking water treatment and/or distribution processes. Moreover, further studies are needed to clarify the potentially important roles of tyrosine-like and humic-like substances in mediating drinking water toxicity and to identify the potential sources of these contaminants. Additionally, tryptophan-like fluorescence may be adopted as a useful parameter to monitor the treatment performance of DWTPs. Our observations provided insights into the importance of utilizing biotoxicity assays and fluorescence spectroscopy as tools to complement the routine evaluation of drinking water.

Impacts of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products on the performance and microbial community of a sponge-based moving bed biofilm reactor

Four lab-scale moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) were built to treat simulated wastewater containing typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The efficiency in removing different PPCPs at different concentrations (1, 2 and 5 mg/L) and their effects on the performance of MBBRs were investigated. Results showed that the average removal efficiencies of sulfadiazine, ibuprofen and carbamazepine were 61.1 ± 8.8%, 74.9 ± 8.8% and 28.3 ± 7.4%, respectively. Compared to the reactor without PPCPs, the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency of the reactors containing sulfadiazine, ibuprofen and carbamazepine declined by 21%, 30% and 42%, respectively. Based on the microbial community analysis, increasing the PPCPs concentration within a certain range (<2 mg/L) could stimulate microbial growth and increase microbial diversity yet the diversity reduced when the concentration (5 mg/L) exceeded the tolerance of microorganisms. Furthermore the presence and degradation of different PPCPs resulted in a different kind of microbial community structure in the MBBRs.

The Occurrence and Risks of Selected Emerging Pollutants in Drinking Water Source Areas in Henan, China

The occurrence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in aqueous environments has potential effects on ecological safety and human health. Three kinds of OMPs (namely, pharmaceuticals, ultraviolet (UV) filters and organophosphate esters (OPEs)) in four drinking water source areas in Henan Province of China were analyzed, and their potential risks were evaluated. Among 48 target chemicals, 37 pollutants with total concentrations ranging from 403.0 to 1751.6 ng/L were detected in water, and 13 contaminants with total concentrations from 326.0 to 1465.4 ng/g (dry weight) were observed in sediment. The aqueous pollution levels in Jiangang Reservoir and Shahe Water Source Area were higher than that in Nanwan Reservoir and Baiguishan Reservoir, while the highest total amount of pollutants in sediment was found in Baiguishan Reservoir. Compared with pharmaceuticals and UV filters, OPEs presented higher concentrations in all investigated drinking water source areas. The highest observed concentration was triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO, 865.2 ng/L) in water and tripentyl phosphate (TPeP, 1289.8 ng/g) in sediment. Moreover, the risk quotient (RQ) analysis implies that the determined aqueous contaminants exhibited high risks to algae and invertebrates, whereas moderate risk to fish was exhibited. The health risk assessment of aqueous OMPs by means of the hazard index (HI) indicates that the risks to adults and children were negligible. These observations are expected to provide useful information for the assessment of water quality in drinking water sources in Henan, China.
