A review of the impact of wastewater on the fate of pesticides in soils: Effect of some soil and solution properties

Long-term vinasse application enhanced the initial dissipation of atrazine and ametryn in a sugarcane field in Tucumán, Argentina

The production of sugarcane bioethanol generates large volumes of vinasse, an effluent whose final disposal can produce an environmental impact that is of concern. The long-term disposal of vinasse in sugarcane fields could challenge crop management, such as the performance of traditional herbicides, by changing soil properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of long-term vinasse application on the field and the dissipation of atrazine and ametryn herbicides in a subtropical sugarcane agroecosystem, and to discuss the potential processes involved in it. Vinasse affected soil properties by increasing pH (12%), electrical conductivity (160%), and soil organic carbon (25%) at 0-10 cm depth of soil. Differences in the herbicide calculated sorption coefficient (Kd) varied according to the pedotransfer function applied and the herbicide type (atrazine or ametryn). During the first seven days after herbicide application, the soil underwent long-term vinasse application and increased atrazine and ametryn dissipation 45% and 33%, respectively, compared with the conventional fertilization scheme (control). The Pesticide Root Zone Model revealed that dissipation was mediated mainly by the degradation process rather than transport or other processes. The long-term application of vinasse in a typical sugarcane field of Tucumán, Argentina decreased the potential groundwater pollution of triazines and, adversely, reduced their bioavailability for weed control. For this, the present study presents original information about how long-term treatment with vinasse may require an adaptation of conventional management practices such as the application of herbicides in Argentina and other sugarcane-producing regions. Assessing the environmental pesticides impact of river sediments from a basin in western Mexico: Spatiotemporal distribution, risk assessment of aquatic invertebrates and pesticides prioritization

The intensive use of pesticides in Mexican agriculture has contributed significantly to the increase in food production, but at the same time represents potential risk to biota. This situation creates a dilemma between the need to increase food production and the preservation of the environment and human health. Aquatic invertebrates play a vital role in the balance of aquatic ecosystems but are sensitive to pesticides contamination. The sensitivity of aquatic invertebrates to pesticides contamination has led them to be used to assess the potential impact of this contamination on aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, conducted in the Ayuquila-Armería basin, the following aims were achieved: 1) quantifying the presence of 20 pesticides in river sediments, 2) assessing the spatiotemporal distribution of pesticides in river sediments, 3) determining the potential risk to aquatic invertebrates, and 4) prioritizing pesticides based on their potential risk. Twelve pesticides were consistently quantified in 192 river sediments samples. The pesticides with the highest concentrations were ametrine, malathion and picloram. The temporal analysis showed seasonality in pesticide concentrations, with higher detection frequencies during the wet season. The risk assessment showed that aquatic invertebrates may be affected by the concentrations of carbofuran, malathion, diazinon and ametrine. Pesticides prioritization identified ametrine, carbofuran, and diazinon as major concerns based on the methodology that considers the Frequency and Extent of Exceedance. This study provides valuable insights into the current pesticides scenario in the Ayuquila-Armería River sediments. The findings underscore the need for sustainable alternatives to mitigate the ecological risks associated with pesticides contamination in this aquatic ecosystem.

Efficacy of drip irrigation with thiamethoxam on control of Monolepta hieroglyphica, and uptake, translocation and dietary risk of thiamethoxam in maize

BACKGROUND

Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky) is an important agricultural pest that causes significant economic losses in terms of crop production. Conventional pesticide spraying treatments can result in pesticide drift, endanger nontarget organisms and cause pests to fly away, resulting in unsatisfactory prevention and control effects. To study the effect of thiamethoxam on the control of maize M. hieroglyphica, a field experiment was conducted to determine the optimal thiamethoxam application dose, its spatial and temporal distribution dynamics, and its dietary risk based on its control effect when applied by spray and drip irrigation.

RESULTS

The results of the field trials showed that compared with spray irrigation, drip irrigation resulted in greater control starting from Day 5. This result was a consequence of the hysteresis effect of thiamethoxam being first absorbed by the roots and then continuously transferred upward, where it accumulates. After 30 days of drip irrigation with 75 and 150 g a.i. ha-1 thiamethoxam, the control effect on M. hieroglyphica was 32.41-49.44% and 69.77-80.57%, respectively. The results of the dietary risk assessment showed that the risk of thiamethoxam ingestion through maize kernels was acceptable regarding its effect on human health.

CONCLUSIONS

Drip irrigation with thiamethoxam can improve the effective utilization rate of pesticides, achieve precise control of maize M. hieroglyphica, and provide a new method for sustainable agricultural production. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Contamination Status, Environmental Factor and Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Hexachlorobutadiene in Greenhouse and Open-Field Agricultural Soils across China

With the popularization and high-intensity utilization of greenhouse cultivation for crops growth, the pollution of greenhouse soils has been of concern. Therefore, a national-scale survey was conducted to investigate the contamination status, sources, influence factors and the risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) in greenhouse and nearby open-field soils. Contents of PCBs ranged from 10-6). This study provided a full insight on the contamination status and risks of PCBs and HCBD when guiding greenhouse agriculture activities.

Nanopesticides in comparison with agrochemicals: Outlook and future prospects for sustainable agriculture

Agrochemicals are products of advanced technologies that use inorganic pesticides and fertilizers. Widespread use of these compounds has adverse environmental effects, leading to acute and chronic exposure. Globally, scientists are adopting numerous green technologies to ensure a healthy and safe food supply and a livelihood for everyone. Nanotechnologies significantly impact all aspects of human activity, including agriculture, even if synthesizing certain nanomaterials is not environmentally friendly. Numerous nanomaterials may therefore make it easier to create natural insecticides, which are more effective and environmentally friendly. Nanoformulations can improve efficacy, reduce effective doses, and extend shelf life, while controlled-release products can improve the delivery of pesticides. Nanotechnology platforms enhance the bioavailability of conventional pesticides by changing kinetics, mechanisms, and pathways. This allows them to bypass biological and other undesirable resistance mechanisms, increasing their efficacy. The development of nanomaterials is expected to lead to a new generation of pesticides that are more effective and safer for life, humans, and the environment. This article aims to express at how nanopesticides are being used in crop protection now and in the future. This review aims to shed some light on the various impacts of agrochemicals, their benefits, and the function of nanopesticide formulations in agriculture.

Cellulose Acetate Film Containing Bonechar for Removal of Metribuzin from Contaminated Drinking Water

Bonechar presents high sorption capacity for mobile herbicides retained in soil and water. However, its use in a granulated and/or powder form makes it difficult to remove water. The objective of this study was to produce a cellulose acetate film with bonechar as a viable alternative to remove metribuzin from water. The treatments were composed of 2 and 3 g of bonechar fixed on a cellulose acetate film, pure bonechar, and a control (no bonechar). The sorption and desorption study was carried out in the equilibrium batch mode with five concentrations of metribuzin (0.25, 0.33, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L−1). The water used in the experiment was potable water. Herbicide analysis was performed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The addition of 2 and 3 g of the bonechar fixed on the acetate film sorbed 40% and 60%, respectively, of the metribuzin at the lowest concentrations (0.25, 0.33, and 0.5 mg L−1). For both additions, desorption was low, being 7% and 2.5% at 24 and 120 h, respectively. There are still no reports of the production of cellulose acetate film with bonechar for herbicide removal in water, considered an alternative of easy handling and indicated for water treatment plants.

Batch adsorption of herbicides from aqueous solution onto diverse reusable materials and granulated activated carbon

This study reports the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption of five herbicides, MCPA, mecoprop-P, 2,4-D, fluroxypyr and triclopyr, from aqueous solutions onto a range of raw and pyrolysed waste materials originating from an industrial setting. The raw waste materials investigated demonstrated little capability for any herbicide adsorption. Granulated activated carbon (GAC) was capable of the best removal of the herbicides, with >95% removal observed. A first order kinetic model fitted the data best for GAC adsorption of 2,4-D, while a pseudo-first order model fitted the data best for GAC adsorption of fluroxypyr and triclopyr, indicating that adsorption was via physisorption. A pseudo-second order kinetic model fitted the GAC adsorption of MCPA and mecoprop-P, which is indicative of chemisorption. The adsorption of the herbicides in all cases was best described by the Freundlich model, indicating that adsorption occurred onto heterogeneous surfaces.

Legacy and emerging pollutants in Latin America: A critical review of occurrence and levels in environmental and food samples

The increase and indiscriminate use of personal care products, food products, fertilizers, pesticides, and health products, among others, have resulted/are resulting in extensive environmental contamination. Most of these products contain traces of widespread chemicals, usually known as emerging pollutants (EPs) or pollutants of emerging concern (PEC). The Latin American (LA) region comprises 20 countries with different social and cultural aspects, with 81 % of the population living in urban areas. The LA region has some countries on the top list of users/consumers of EPs, from pesticides and fertilizers to personal care products. However, there is a gap in information related to the distribution of EPs in the environment of this region, with very few existing review texts exploring this issue. Therefore, this present paper advances this approach. An exhaustive literature review, with the selection of 176 documents, provided unique up-to-date information on the presence/distribution of 17 classes of legacy or emerging pollutants in different food and environmental matrices (soil, sediment, water, and air). The study shows that the wide distribution and recorded levels of these pollutants in the continental environment are potential risks to human health, mainly through food and drinking water ingestion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are pollutants of deep public concern since they show carcinogenic properties. Several classes of pollutants, like endocrine disruptors, have caused harmful effects on humans and the environment. Besides that, pharmaceutical products and pesticides are compounds of high consumption worldwide, being environmental contamination a real and ongoing possibility. Finally, gaps and future research needs are deeply pointed out.

Systematic evaluation of chiral fungicide penflufen for the bioactivity improvement and input reduction using alphafold2 models and transcriptome sequencing

Traditional risk assessment of pesticide concludes at the racemic level, which is often incomprehensive. In this study, systematic studies on environmental stability, bioactivity, and ecotoxicological effects of fungicide penflufen were carried out at the enantiomeric level. The single-enantiomer of penflufen was successfully separated and prepared, and their stability was verified in different environmental matrices. Meanwhile, bioactivity test indicated that S-(+)-penflufen had increased bioactivity with its bioactivities against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Fusarium moniliforme being factors of 7.8, 1.8, and 4.7, respectively greater than those of R-(-)-penflufen. Molecular docking results showed the strong hydrogen bond interactions with Leu300, enantiomer-specific hydrophobic interactions with Cys299, Arg91, and His93, and the greater binding energy between S-(+)-penflufen and succinate dehydrogenase of Rhizoctonia solani caused the selective bioactivity. Additionally, two enantiomers showed low acute toxicity whereas selective sub-chronic toxicity to earthworms. In sub-chronic toxicity test, the accumulated enantiomers caused abnormalities in intestinal tract structure, enzyme activities, and gene expression of earthworms, especially in the S-(+)-penflufen treatment. The selective interactions between penflufen enantiomers and key proteins were elucidated using molecular docking, which may be the main reason of stereoselective subchronic toxicity. S-(+)-penflufen has high bioactivity and low acute risk, it has great potential for development.

Genotoxic hazard and oxidative stress induced by wastewater irrigated soil with special reference to pesticides and heavy metal pollution

Due to enhancement of industrial growth and urbanization, soil contamination is increasing prominently. Therefore, it is important to examine possible adverse effects of industrial waste. Soil samples were might to be polluted with several heavy-metals and pesticides. Gas chromatographic results showed occurrence of high-level of organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides in studied soil samples. Genotoxicity of soil extracts was assessed using environmental-risk assessment models. Soil samples were extracted in hexane and dichloromethane solvents and were evaluated for genotoxic potential by prokaryotic (Ames test, plasmid nicking assay and E. coli K-12 DNA repair defective mutants) and eukaryotic (Allium cepa root chromosomal aberration and Vigna radiata seed-germination test) bioassays. Strain TA98 was found the most susceptible among soil extracts. The mutagenicity of hexane soil extract from wastewater irrigation was found to be higher than that of DCM samples in terms of mutagenic index, mutagenic potential, and induction factor for Ames strains. The damage in DNA repair defective mutants of hexane extracts were found higher compared to DCM extracts at dose of 20 μl/ml of culture. Survival in polA, lexA and recA mutants were 39%, 47% and 55% while treated with hexane extract. Allium cepa test, mitotic index was decreased in dose-dependent way and various kinds of chromosomal aberrations were found. Vigna radiata seeds germination and other parameters were also affected when treated with wastewater irrigated (WWI) soil. Oxidative stress in V. radiata roots were also showed under CLS microscope. Genotoxicity of WWI soil extract was also confirmed by plasmid nicking test. Our study provides possible explanation for the assessment of potential health and environmental hazards of the industrial region.

Recovery, regeneration and sustainable management of spent adsorbents from wastewater treatment streams: A review

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

An assessment of potential pesticide transmission, considering the combined impact of soil texture and pesticide properties: A meta-analysis

Pesticides are widely employed as a cost-effective means of reducing the impacts of undesirable plants and animals. The aim of this paper is to develop a risk ranking of transmission of key pesticides through soil to waterways, taking into account physico-chemical properties of the pesticides (soil half-life and water solubility), soil permeability, and the relationship between adsorption of pesticides and soil texture. This may be used as a screening tool for land managers, as it allows assessment of the potential transmission risks associated with the use of specified pesticides across a spectrum of soil textures. The twenty-eight pesticides examined were differentiated into three groups: herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. The highest risk of pesticide transmission through soils to waterways is associated with soils containing <20% clay or >45% sand. In a small number of cases, the resulting transmission risk is not influenced by soil texture alone. For example, for Phenmedipham, the transmission risk is higher for clay soils than for silt loam. The data generated in this paper may also be used in the identification of critical area sources, which have a high likelihood of pesticide transmission to waterways. Furthermore, they have the potential to be applied to GIS mapping, where the potential transmission risk values of the pesticides can be layered directly onto various soil textures.

Removal of Nutrients and Pesticides from Agricultural Runoff Using Microalgae and Cyanobacteria

The use of pesticides in agriculture has ensured the production of different crops. However, pesticides have become an emerging public health problem for Latin American countries due to their excessive use, inadequate application, toxic characteristics, and minimal residue control. The current project evaluates the ability of two strains of algae (Chlorella and Scenedesmus sp.) and one cyanobacteria (Hapalosyphon sp.) to remove excess pesticides and other nutrients present in runoff water from rice production. Different concentrations of wastewater and carbon sources (Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) were evaluated. According to the results, all three strains can be grown in wastewater without dilution (100%), with a biomass concentration comparable to a synthetic medium. All three strains significantly reduced the concentration of NO3 and PO4 (95 and 85%, respectively), with no difference between Na2CO3 or NaHCO3. Finally, Chlorella sp. obtained the highest removal efficiency of the pesticide (Chlorpyrifos), followed by Scenedesmus and Hapalosyphon sp. (100, 75, and 50%, respectively). This work shows that it is possible to use this type of waste as an alternative source of nutrients to obtain biomass and metabolites of interest, such as lipids and carbohydrates, to produce biofuels.

Monitoring of pesticide residues in crops irrigated with reclaimed water by a multiresidue method based on modified QuEChERS

In this study, we aimed to validate and apply a quick and easy extraction method for the simultaneous determination of 27 pesticide residues at trace levels in agricultural samples (soil, fruit, and leaf) to monitor the presence of these contaminants released from reclaimed water. The procedure was based on a salting-out extraction method with acidified acetonitrile, followed by a dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up step applying the C18 sorbent. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for identification and quantification of the target analytes. This methodology provided recovery values higher than 70%, for all pesticides and matrices evaluated in the study, except for propamocarb in soil samples (35%). Repeatability and reproducibility results, calculated as relative standard deviations (RSD, %), ranged between 1% and 18% in both cases. No remarkable matrix effects were observed for vegetable samples, except for thiamethoxam in red cabbage, and hexythiazox in carrot and leaves (between 30 and 40%). Soil samples showed a moderate matrix effect (between 21 and 35%) for more than 80% of the compounds. Monitoring pesticide residues found in agricultural samples irrigated with contaminated reclaimed water under controlled conditions revealed the efficacy of the proposed method. Three common vegetables were grown to evaluate the different migration and distribution rates in crops and soil. Pesticide accumulation in the different parts of the crop (soil, fruit, and leaves) and the potential human exposure to pesticides through daily intake were also discussed.

The inhibitory mechanism of natural soil colloids on the biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls by a degrading bacterium

In spite of extensive studies of soil model components, the role of natural soil colloids in the biodegradation of organic pollutants remain poorly understood. Accordingly, the present study selected Mollisol colloids (MCs) and Ultisol colloids (UCs) to investigate their effects on the biodegradation of 3, 3', 4, 4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) by Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110. Results demonstrated that both natural soil colloids significantly decreased the biodegradation of PCB77, which partly resulted from the significant decrease in the bioaccessibility of PCB77. Furthermore, the activity of Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110 was remarkably inhibited under the exposure to the two types of soil colloids, which was mainly ascribed to the inhibition of cell reproduction but not the lethal effect of reactive oxygen species. The calculated results from Ex-DLVO theory further indicated that the repulsion between UCs and biodegrading bacteria retarded the effective contact of cells with adsorbed PCB77 from UCs, resulting in the decline of the rate of cell reproduction. In general, the inhibition of MCs was limited to PCB77 bioaccessibility, whereas the negative effect of UCs was controlled by PCB77 bioaccessibility and the effective contact of cells with colloids. This study could provide implication for the enhancement of microbial remediation in contaminated soil.

Organophosphorus pesticides in greenhouse and open-field soils across China: Distribution characteristic, polluted pathway and health risk

A national-scale survey was conducted to investigate the distribution characteristic, polluted pathway and health risk of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in greenhouse and open-field soils in 20 regions across China. The total concentrations of eight OPPs ranged from 22.1 to 435 ng/g with a mean of 96.2 ng/g in greenhouses, and from 9.93 to 303 ng/g with a mean of 66.6 ng/g in open fields. Due to the intensive agricultural activities, the high residue of OPPs in greenhouse and open-field soils was found in the northeastern, northern and central areas. Furthermore, the effect of environmental factors (i.e. human activities, soil properties, heavy metals and microorganism) on OPPs were evaluated through the partial least squares path modeling. Apart from microorganisms, all the other factors affected the soil contamination of OPPs directly (p < 0.05), where the soil properties occupied the most important position (p < 0.01). In greenhouses, the highest correlation was observed in the relationship between human activities and soil properties, indicating that their combination was more likely to cause the contamination of OPPs in greenhouses indirectly. Moreover, the soil properties had the significant effect on the heavy metals in open fields (p < 0.05), suggesting that the residual OPPs in open fields was sensitive to interaction of these two factors. Although the hazard indexes in all soil samples were less than 1.0, the children were more susceptible to the non-cancer risks of OPPs in greenhouse. This study provided valuable information to understand the pollution status of OPPs in farmlands and protect the agroecological environment.
